Reviews (page 3 of 8)
Beautiful songs and harmonies, fantastic closer.
Well I'm not sure whether it deserved a spot on this list but I'm glad it has one. There's a lot of harsh criticism in these reviews calling it too hipstery. Which... OK yeah, I get it. It has a bit of an Animal Collective vibe (which is not an insult). But it's more accessible and has some really stunning arrangements. The choral elements add to the general atmosphere of the album, which feels equally grounded and experimental. My only complaint is that it could be a bit shorter, or it needs more hits on the level of 'Two Weeks'. But the second half of the album really picks up and keeps it interesting. Whether it's very significant or not, I still like it.
Really nice album -had previously only heard two weeks but liked the vibe, especially the last song. A nice winter album.
I liked it
I am familiar with the song Two Weeks, but I did not know the band or the name of the song. This album is Indie Indie, which is pretty unexpected, tbh. Most of the albums I've listened to (260-ish of them) have all been fairly large, in name, sales, reputation, or critical reception. I really like Indie music, and this is a cream of the crop Indie album. I know not everyone is going to particularly enjoy it, but I really do. Favorite Song(s): Two Weeks, About Face, Foreground
Sounds like something I would have listened to in 2009. A good mellow listen.
I enjoy this album. I got it from a VMP record club a while back. Some of the harmonies remind me of Ben Folds a little bit, I don't know why. It's pretty standard 2000s era indie stuff and nothing super special, but I still like it and will listen to it again.
I had heard the song two weeks come up on my spotify many times, so I had spme expectations for the album. I am blown away by how much im enjoying it. The songs are varied an emotional- sometimes it feels like an electronic group, sometimes a true rock band, sometimes a choir- there are a lot of tone ahofts to a pleasant effect. I really enjoy their use of voc harmonies as well. Overall- a very good album. Im surprised I hadent heard any other singles from it besides Two Weeks. Enjoyed it- will definitely listen again
Good shit this
I liked this.
I was working a job in san francisco in 2010 and one of the people I was working with was listening to this album. I must have heard it like 30 times over that week, which would have made me intensely dislike most albums/people normally. Thing is, I didnt get tired of it or dislike it then, and in fact I find that I still like it now. 4/5
Pretty good
A previously unknown band for me. I quite enjoyed it and will listen to it again in the future.
This album serves loosely as an opus for the period of indie music that existed roughly between the mid-2000s and the early 2010s, compiling all that was learnt by the band after emerging near the start of this timeframe. Elements of psychedelia are inspired by their earlier efforts (eg. Department of Eagles’ In Ear Park), seen evidently on twinkly, layered tracks such as Fine For Now and I Live With You. Alongside this relatively unique psychedelic element, there exists the reliable indie sound linked with the era, heard on one of the most renowned and recognisable indie songs of all time, Two Weeks. Although perhaps excessive, with forgettable ‘filler’ in-between the really great tracks here, Veckatimest is undoubtedly an indie titan, and for that it deserves its merits.
Very good
Melancholy in an album. And I love me some good melancholy.
Two Weeks While You Wait for the Others
This is really lovely music, but the first time I heard one of these songs was on Youtube and someone posted a major spoiler in the comments of a series I hadn't finished watching. Fuck that person and anyone who posts spoilers in random places. Still really lovely music on this album.
I didn't really have expectations but this exceeded them.
It was quite enjoyable, kinda bizarre and had some very different songs but I liked most of them 8/10
Very good Very consistent
I think this album had a wonderfully unique sound. I am not typically interested in music that is based on vocal layers but I do like thier compositions.
This music can be beautiful and haunting, but so depressing. I really like it.
this album starts with this really really captivating psychedelic rock composition and i was at the edge of my seat ready for more, but as the album went on a lot of the other songs became hunky-dory quiet slow guitar pickin' and mellow pop goodness. it started off so strong! it's not to say that this album isn't bad, i think i just expected it to go a completely different direction than it actually did, and unfortunately it did kind of disappoint me for that reason.
Really enjoyed this.
Yea this is pretty great. Like most music after 2002, I was not familiar with these guys, but I really dig their sound. Great guitar riffs and vocals. Good Stuff!
What a creative and pleasant album ! The only reason it does not earn 5 stars is because I’m not familiar with it enough to consider it perfect…
There's something quite venerable and beguiling about this beautiful piece of American indie. Often sparse, it occasionally takes your breath away with stunning harmonics. Big fan.
I was in college when this album came out, and I really love the song "Two Weeks", which is the song most people will know from the album. But I think the better mission statement for the album is "Southern Point", the opening track that really captures the excitement and adventure of the music on this album. This is a rare recent (oh shit nevermind, 15 year old) album that I think makes sense on this list. It captures the peak of indie/blog bands (while the music is fantastic, Pitchfork probably deserves a lot of credit for its success and reach) in the late 2000s-early 2010s. But getting back to what matters, the music on this album is fantastic. It's detailed and lush, and while it has a consistent vibe, each song carves a unique space. To quote the Pitchfork review "it is compositionally and sonically airtight, every moment sounding tweaked, labored over." I think what I like most is the sense of adventure and exploration in each song, there is always a surprising shift that ends up elevating each track, taking you somewhere away from where you started.
Two weeks is such a 2010s era indie pop song to me that it’s weird to know it came out in 2009. And even weirder that it came from this album because it’s definitely different (but not drastically) from the rest of the album. It’s definitely a standout track along with all we ask and I love with you but the whole album was exactly the kind of indie music I grew up with in high school and college so I enjoyed it all around.
Two Weeks is the one that comes in with the keyboards and ‘ahhhooahhoahhhhhh” 2009
Fín plata. Two weeks er frábært lag.
Interesting album with cool production and song structures
Funky little album. Hits : Two weeks
Grizzly Bear was one of more influential alt-rock bands of the aughts. The band started as the solo work of Ed Droste, who wrote indie/folk sounds with a elements of psychedelia. As the band matured, the four piece collaborated by adding jazz undertones and rich orchestrations. When they recorded Veckatimest, the band had learned to collaborate effectively, and the result was their most successful album. Driven by a few hits, like "Tom Weeks," Grizzly Bear set a standard for alt-rock of the era: engaging story-telling in upbeat folk/pop songs.
Treads the line of being "indie" to be "indie" fairly well. Sometimes a bit abstract or weird just to be that way, but overall enjoyable.
A record to have a on vinyl
Antlers Hospice did it better
Voice gave me Cat Stevens vibes at times. Overall a nice album, kinda middle of the road energy wise but gave overall happy vibes.
Thoughts before listening: This is a nice surprise this morning. I really liked this album when it came out although I wouldn't expect it to be on this list. Maybe thats just because years of reading music magazines has instilled in me that everything old is better than everything new. Anyway, I know there are some great songs on this album so I look forward to revisiting. Review: I have a very soft spot in my heart for Grizzly Bear and other 00s-10s folky pop rock bands like Fleet Foxes. This is the sound of my young adult years and I really like it. I might have more nostalgia for the 90s alt-rock bands, but I think I enjoy this music better. This album is really good, with some absolute gems of the era, especially "Southern Point" and "Two Weeks". 4-stars.
This album came out at the tail end of the 2000s. That was a good decade, and music like this colored a lot of it. Pitchfork approved indie music. Smarthphones were just getting going and iPods were still big. Marvel movies hadn't begun to dominate. Social Media didn't have "like" buttons quite yet. Listening to this take me back there, and I like that.
two weeks
I found this quite gentle and soothing, a bit like a nice warm bath with maybe a little essential oil dropped in.
till ready, able the album is flawless to be honest. I love the melodies, the atmosphere this album creates is so cozy and the harmonies on this thing are so beautiful. It has such warmth, but it's also dark - there's distortion used in a lot of these tracks too. The sound is just so good on this thing. About face, does feel a little rushed and it could've progressed a bit more however i still like it. I like/love all the songs on here. I have similar qualms with the next song hold still. After that though, the album picks up again while you wait is great, i live with you is haunted and macabre and even though the lyrics don't paint a vivid image, the musical landscape and the atmosphere completely transports you. The closer is a great piano ballad again. It's one of the best indie rock albums of the 2000s. It's a strong strong 4. I wish the lyrics were a bit more personal and not so vague. It's a near-perfect album.
Like walking into a Google lobby circa 2010. Smells like coffee, colorful upholstery and lots of software engineers who are learning how to surf.
3.5?
Interesting. Rock with early mid-century influences - staccato piano, folky progressions, Beach Boys vocal harmonies with falsetto and swimming in reverb (without the slightest 80s taint). But also electronic. Sunny textures, shuffle grooves, choral-quality four-part vocal arrangements. The closest comparison I can give you is Montreal's Half Moon Run, though that's a bit obscure and they're a little more folk and a little more rock. Spare but skillful and textural guitar arrangements. Driving but delicate drums. Deft but restrained bass. Keys! But good luck catching them in the act. This is an album where everything serves the song -- no technical flourishes in the playing for the sake of showing off. Deeply dynamic. Gentle, affecting, potent, moving. Very cool.
What I love about Veckatimest is that it really tries to be great and for the most part it hits. Every sound is considered. Nothing sounds like an accident. It’s beautiful produced. Two Weeks, While You Wait for the Others are incredible. It’s very very close to 5 stars 8.8/10
This was one of my faves when it came out and I still love a lot of songs from this album, looking forward to listening with intent today. ... and it's as great as I remember! No skips! Standouts for me today were Two Weeks, All We Ask, and Ready Able.
M
Two Weeks is the obvious standout but the rest of the album is pretty good.
Oh, I like the mood! Solid indie
I liked this. Nothing exciting or outstanding but nice in the background, I’d like to listen to more.
Fascinating and unique songwriting and performing style. Very much its own cool thing.
Like spooky mountain ghosts echoing through your headphones. It rules.
Very enjoyable album, two weeks is a highlight. I got the name confused with the barenaked ladies song.
First listen Saved 8/12 Top track: Ready, Able
I liked 2 weeks. Rest was a little slow. Good vibes tho 3 stars imo
This album is nostalgic for me. The vocal harmonies and instrumentation are gorgeous.
Had some nice tunes, I honestly don't remember it super well
This is very impressive. I was trying to think of what I could compare it to, and as strange as it may seem I keep coming back to The Beach Boys. A more modern version of The Beach Boys to be sure, but the music has that same intricacy and attention to detail. The same layered approach where everything blends together but each individual part can still be heard and appreciated on its own. Maybe that’s a crazy assessment but I’m sticking with it. 4 stars.
ok me re gustó 8/10
Groovy
I file this under the title of 'Adventuring Through the Woods Music' along with like the Fleet Foxes. Some of the songs are pretty slow to get up off the ground but after a few listens I think they've grown on me quite a bit. 7/10
Classic late 2000s indy. Great vocals & arrangements. Solid album.
A vibe, will definitely listen to on a bike ride this summer.
This made me want to roast marshmallows over a fire on a cool summer night with friends. Near the end of the night, when things are getting a little tired and everybody is comfy.
Been awhile since I've listened to this. Not my favorite of the Grizzly Bear albums but still great. Super sad it reminds me their on a hiatus cuz I loved their last album. Classic indie rock. Southern Point rules. James secretly has been secretly listening to Two Weeks every day for the past 14 years "Never heard it ok" My favorite kinda sound from them is Ready, Able. Hauntingly beautiful.
Solid
Yep, very nice. My kind of music! Explorative, melodic, has kind of like a ghostly/ethereal quality to it, that might just be the choral feel of the singing, or the long, slow rhythms and sounds centred across the album. Not many songs that caught me enough to add them to my regular playlists, but this is an album I support!
This was an enjoying listen, if mostly sonically. Like a mix of Fleet Foxes and Dirty projectors but much more downtempo than either of those. I love all the slow, atmospheric buildups and vocal harmonies kind of layered in the mix. Will probably return to.
this is cool and good. i like it. also logic sampled one of these songs which really caught me off guard.
Not at all what I expected. Nice overall album with a great indie vibe. If you enjoy the genre you'll have a blast.
It’s a great work of psych indie. Loved the harmonies and textures. The voice is pretty cool, too. Two weeks and Cheerleader stood out for me. Adding them to the Alvvays and Animal Collective playlist.
Another favourite from my younger days! Big fan of Grizzly Bear and their various side projects. This was the record that got me into them and in hindsight, this is probably the record that got me into this whole sound - something that I’m still big into now despite not listening to Veckatimest in a while. Once messaged them after they got heckled at the Sage in Gateshead, and they were polite enough to reply to my embarrassing fanboy message.
A tricky one for me as I definitely enjoyed it, but can't really remember much about it. Good as background music, I like the sound of the music more than the guy's voice. One of those where, on balance, I'd rather have it on, than silence. I'd give 3.5 stars if possible, but I think, based on the strength of Two Weeks, I'll knock it up to 4, rather than down.
Two Weeks just pushes this whole thing to 4 stars at least on its own. Top 10 songs of the 2000s.
Admittedly a big fan of this, I've always felt that the record drags om juuuuust a bit too much. 'Two Weeks' though. What a track.
I love the adventurous, complex and experimental sound of Grizzly Bear. Rossen and Droste’s vocals blend perfectly and their songwriting never fails to leave you emotionally overloaded. Veckatimest drags on just a bit too long (maybe just a song length) and I lose some interest halfway through the record; only to be regained at the end. But how can you not feel joy at the end, when a record features a track like “Two Weeks”? What a masterpiece!
Hints of Surfjan Stevens. Nice melodies,. Fine vocals, harmonies and interesting song structure. Fascinating album, listened a couple of times, could, long term, be a grower, but enjoyed today's recommendation a lot.
This is a really interesting album, with a great mix of sounds.
Never heard of the Band nor the Album... enjoyed it a lot.
Hauntingly beautiful vocals.
Loved this album. Very original and I could never see what was coming next, which I loved. Nothing special about the singing or instrumentation in my opinion, but the chords and structure were fascinating. I enjoyed this album very much and will be listening again, although probably not as a whole album as not every song was all that exciting, just a good few. 4/5
v good
This is a great album. I’ve already downloaded a few of the songs but I enjoyed the ones I hadn’t heard before.
Not at all familiar with Grizzly Bear, but I found it an interesting listen. I was too focused on other things while I listened to even begin to have the foggiest idea what the tracks were about lyrically, but the melodies and rhythms were ear catching for me.
I love this album. Saw them at Glasto 1997 in the new bands tent.
Great album, Opera Pop as Tim referred to it, it’s snazzy and catchy and atmospheric all at once.
Just kind of floated over me. In a good way.
I don’t think I knew this band wrote Two Weeks. This album does have that 2010s indie sound - fleet foxes, dirty projectors, arcade fire - but it does have some of its own personality. My favorite was While You Wait For The Others. A light 4.
Enjoyable. I recognised quite a few songs from advertising, being a testament to how well composed they are.
one of my favourite songs is on this album but ive never listened to the full album until now, looking forward to it its really good and has lots of great songs in it
kinda weird and out there at times but i generally enjoyed it.
Another totally new experience. Definitely going to be a grower. Provisional 4
“Two Weeks” is infectious, and “Ready, Able” is haunting and quietly intense. The rest of Grizzly Bear’s “Veckatimest” never quite reaches those heights, but it is consistently interesting and challenging.
Grizzly Bear is at times very reminiscent of Fleet Foxes (Ready, Able in particular). It's good dreary day music but it took a couple listens because it tends to fade into the background.
Пушка бомба в самом начале, под конец скучновато. Абсолютно понравилось, переслушивать буду, но таки не 5. 4++
I liked it. Not really for any specific reason. I’ve been having a lot of good luck with the 2000s albums on this list.
slept on it, and i have to award 4 stars. it's a classic of the era, but i'd elevate the best of animal collective, bon iver, fleet foxes, dirty projectors, wolf parade etc over this. still, this album holds up incredibly well. delicate, lush, colorful, melancholy, layered songs without any duds front to back.
Some excellent and memorable songs, mixed with some complex, slower bleeds. This one gets better the more times I listen to it. Also threw on Jack Goes Boating to see how this holds up as a movie soundtrack and it’s great. A nostalgic one that is essential listening from the 2000-2010s indie era.
Closer to a 4.5/5 for me. This is a great album but it also gets extra points from me from a nostalgia perspective. Takes me back to my post-college NYC days.
Lijepo je se vratiti sa ovim albumom. Nisam ga sto godina slušala i zaboravila sam koliko mi je dobar
I will admit, outside of Two Weeks I have never really given Grizzly Bear a chance. I always wrote them off as being one of those bands that was full to the brim with talent, basically rising to success from copying the ‘60s pop sound and running with it. Bands like Whitney, Fleet Foxes, Local Natives, etc. were doomed to only get my background ear because of this surface level judgment of their sound. I have always believed these bands have massive talent but I kind of wrote them all off as lacking originality, being too derivative. With this listen of Veckatimest I can safely say that Grizzly Bear has proven my judgments to be completely wrong. There is something special here. Something unique. Sure, you can certainly hear the influence from pop music of yesteryear. My dad’s records. But there is something more to this record than music destined to live in my background. There are stories to be told. Beautiful, haunting production. Moments that stick. The message of Cheerleader, that end bit of Dory with the drums just crumbling to pieces, the little story told in Hold Still, the frenetic chorus of I Live With You, the entirety of Foreground. In general I loved the lyrical simplicity while still managing to hold weight in each word, the instrumentation, both Daniel and Ed’s vocal delivery, the way each song felt like it was this story that was so purposefully paced and thought out almost as if there are accompanying storyboards somewhere. This was a great listen that I will definitely return to again.
Great album the whole way through - loved 2 weeks
An album that I would always look at and say, "oh yeah, I played that a million times in high school." Apparently I didn't have the full one on iTunes, because quite a few of these songs are brand new to me! I know so little about Grizzly Bear's story, but to hear this album up against their first is like seeing boys becoming men. The records on their first project are wandering, searching, somewhat nervous lofi when put up against this album, and I can't help but think that the songwriting is a huge part of that journey. I can't get enough of Daniel Rossen's songwriting... I think he's just a really unique writer, both in tone and in the way his melodies and chords work. The Rossen songs tend to be my favorites, especially when you can feel the band going off the deep end a little, but oh man! That last song "Foreground!" That's an instant favorite for me, and it hits me right in the heart. "Two Weeks" is an obvious giant hit, but it feels a little misplaced on this album, like it's an entirely different band from the one that does "Southern Point" or "Dory." A real mystery of a band! Some of the textures are some of the most beautiful things I've ever heard, other songs feel a little meandering or confused, sort of like their earlier works. It's a little uneven for an album, but I wouldn't want to live in a world where this album didn't exist. 4/5
this is a good album, not perfect. on its way, but there is some lull, gaps, lost in translation moments. their harmonizing is rad and they do good slow downs and musical breaks. good anthemic moments, interesting chord changes and dark, yet light guitar. there is just something off, something missing. maybe yellow house is a better album, maybe? anyway, definitely worth listening to.
Like.
Organic and hypnotic, I enjoyed this more than I thought I would
Good music. Just not quite what I'm into
Very pleasant listen with a couple of notable highs. 3.5/5
- Listened to this before - Has grown on me with more listens - Two Weeks is one of the best songs of the 21st century but the rest of the album's still good Fav songs: Two Weeks, I Live With You, All We Ask
Nice Indie Rock. Reminds me of the Beatles in some aspects. Nice when having friends visiting
Two weeks heeeerlijk
Beautiful atmosphere. This album made me a fan of the band, and in my opinion their best work came after this gem.
Not perfect, but for a reason I can't explain I had to listen four times. Vexing that I can't describe why! I love the instrumentation, vocal lines, and lyrics. Definitely will come back to this and maybe after 10 times I'll have an idea why I must.
esta riquin
it makes me so happy to see this artist and album here!!! Takes me back to my 'hipster' uni times
Very enjoyable
Interesting mixture of folk and rock
Interesting - indie with touches of... other things. Haunting and beautiful.
Great I love it
Loved the beach boys psych era wall of sound, aggressive guitars doing everything short of distortion contrasting a singer who, not to be cruel, had a pooh bear husk to his voice.
This is a solid album. I had listened to this one before and am a fan of Grizzly Bear before, there are people here being whiny, calling it hipster trash and a lawyer saying it flat out sucks, they’re wrong and dumb. This is an excellent sprawling album with amazing vocals that starts with back to back bangers in Southern Point and Two Weeks. There is a bit of a lull in the middle but it ends strong from Hold Still to Foreground. Excellent band, excellent album!
One of my favorite albums to go to when I need to chill out.
A solid classic.
Lekkere indie shit voel me net een hipster
Wist niet dat two weeks zo heette en van hun was. Zeer verhalend!! Ieder nummer is anders Zweverige vibe
Loved it
I really love this album. Normally a winter play, especially a late night, great for working too. Two Weeks is a classic tune thats loaded with history and memories for me - definitely a song I'll carry with me forever. That said, most of the other tracks (while good) feel unsubstantial. Two Weeks and Foreground are killer bookends to a good album overall. Standout Tracks: Two Weeks, Foreground
This is an album I should have been really interested in when it was released, fitting right into the genre of indie rock music I was obsessing with at the time, but for some reason I never paid much attention to it outside of the insanely popular "Two Weeks". Listening to it now, I realize I shouldn't have slept on this one for so long. It's not the height of the genre by any means, but its a delightfully complex, layered, rich sound that alternates smartly between catchy, optimistic 'summery' tunes and gloomy emotional 'wintery' ones. It goes on just a little too long for my liking and probably would have come in perfectly around the 40-45 minute mark, but I'll definitely be returning to this one many more times. Standout tracks: "Southern Point", "Two Weeks", "Fine for Now", "Ready, Able" and "While You Wait for the Others", "Foreground"
This album reminds me of wintertime which I really like The guitar on this sounds amazing and it sounds nostalgic I feel like I would listen to this more as a full album, not just individual songs Enjoyed a lot 7/10
Diverse styles each song and great vocals
This is one of those bands I've seen mentioned a lot but have never actually listened to. Pretty interesting album. I'd like to give it a few more listens, which may ultimately change my score, but I'll stick with 4 stars now. I thought Foreground (final track) was really good.
Uhhh quite liked this one, i should listen to more or this kind of music
ohh ohh oh OHHHH
I liked this one! Good 00s indie.
Very solid Great production
The kinda stuff I would have been mad into when I was a 15yo weed enthusiast. Weirdly makes me think of if the post-Brian-Wilson-breakdown Beachboys had gotten into Shoegaze but decided it needed a bit of pep.
chill af, late night relaxing. Male vocals with mellow music
Ahh memories. This is the album that got me into Grizzly Bear back in 2013.
Pretty dang lovely, I'll tell you whut... Fave track - "Two Weeks", or maybe "Dory"
I really liked this album. The vocals are beautiful and compliment the music very well. I felt like the style of the album got a bit repetitive toward the end 4/5
Veckatimest is the first full album I've listened to from Grizzly Bear. I've heard the track "Two Weeks" before, and I think I have a track or two from an earlier Grizzly Bear album on a personal play list. Grizzly Bear fits in well with some of the indie bands from the early 2000's that I like. In some cases, I hear a sound that reminds me of Fleet Foxes. I saved "Two Weeks", "Ready, Able", "About Face", and "Foreground" to my re-play playlist. The calm mood of the album hides some of the potential of this album. I liked all of the tracks enough, so I'm rounding up to a full 4 stars.
Really enjoyed this, can't believe I missed it when it came out.
Excellent
VMP
Well crafted
Agréablement surpris, je m'attendais à une "merveille d'un-coup" mais tout l'album était bien
There is Pet sounds, there is Sgt. Pepper, and then there is Veckatimest.
A cool summer breeze
They really shouldn't be called Grizzly Bear playing music like this. Bear Cub instead maybe? Anywho, the album is a cracker. It is not hard rock by the way, the band name may have misled you.
Amazing
De va hard!!
Rich layerz like Shrek
Ok wow this might be the best indie music ive heard. i didnt fully digest it on first listen so i definitely need to return to this one, it has serious potential to grow on me
Lovely album. I was a fan before this record and bought it shortly after it came out. Still love it!
This contains one of my favourite songs of recent times - Two Weeks, which is the soul of the Beach Boys transported to the modern day. The rest of the album has a high bar to reach... It is very nice. It feels like one I'm going to want to hear a few times and let it build on me, but I'm excited to do that for it. It's dense, but a warm hug of an album.
Two Weeks is extremely fucking overplayed to the point it scuffs up the entire rest of an otherwise decent album.
I love Grizzly Bear! Exciting for this to pop up. There are some bangers (Two Weeks, Ready, Able) and the overall sound is very nostalgic also it's definitely a sound I'm into. I LOVE the combination of contemporary classical and indie rock music, it is so original and beautiful and has heavily influenced a lot of the bands I got super into in the 2010s. I just can't quite put my finger on why some of their songs seem more mushy to me, less stand-out and exciting and more nice and pretty. I want to go 7/10 but I do want this high up in my stats so I'm going 4 instead of 3 haha!
AH I totally loved this. It reminds me of Philippa and Craddock around aged 19 as I think they introduced me to Grizzly Bear. Really enjoyed All We Ask the most I'd say, love the way it built up. Reminded me of Bowie glamour. Will listen to this again fo sure!
Muy bueno
first listen quirky psychedelic folk/pop
A blast from the world of middle school for me. I got a little more out of it this time, maybe.
Niice
This album was an pleasant surprise. Good vines 4/5
Not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. Very listen-to-able, unchallenging and emerging at a time this sort of music wasn't The Thing gets this a reasonable, better-than-average 4 stars.
I liked this and would definitely listen again!
Mooooolto interessante. 'All we ask' mi piace molto. Rilassante, riesce a colpire certe corde e instillare il mood giusto.
Creative and complex layered compositions. Absolutely loved the first two tracks. Ready, Able. While you Wait for the Others.
Good vibes
First time Iv heard of this band and album. Love the great chill out but complex sound. An album I would put on again.
Top picks: Two Weeks and Fine For Now. Really liked this one, reminded me of Glass Animals with slightly less production value. Vocal harmonies in particular were gorgeous. 4 stars for sure
This is good. It's got some YES, some Radiohead, some Chad Vangaalen. Pretty pretty pretttttaaaay good
It's pretty much perfect at what it is, the whole thing sounds exactly right all the way through. Maybe not enough individual highlights for a 5
I really enjoyed this album, but I feel it will take a lot of listens to sink in (and I'm about a week behind, so I need to move on!). I'm giving this a 4 mainly because none of it is "sticking with me" but I really enjoyed everything I heard, from the first notes. Interesting to note that this is from the 2011 edition of the book. I have the 2018 edition and this is the first album generated that has been removed from the 1001 albums. Not sure if it's something I had to hear before I die, but I enjoyed it.
Interesting for sure. Was not including in my 2018 version of the book, but I listened anyway. I kind of liked it. 3.5/5, but rounding up to a 4.
I think that this was good, but it’s been a little bit.
Interesting musicality. A lot of fun changes throughout. Not my favorite singer (guy) but some interesting layering and whatnot. Very full, electric instrumentation (more folk-rock than folk) so not a ton that I think I would want use as inspiration for my folk project.
I like this. It's a bit weird, but not too weird, which is just the right amount of weird. There lots of interesting instrumentation and sounds going on here, which pique the interest individually and also combine well to become integral components of each track. A really nice vibe to this album, and some really nice harmonies. Elements remind me of the Flaming Lips, Mull Historical Society, the Byrds and Coldplay. 3.5/5.
True fact - I have wanted to listen to this album in full for almost a decade, but never got around to it. I am glad I finally got to take a listen. Totally worth it, totally up my alley. A few duds here and there so it's not quite a 5, though.
I don’t really know what to say about this one, but I liked it. The whole time I thought this band was a solo project from one of those Animal Collective dudes, but Wikipedia confirms that I know nothing about this whole period of indie rock because I was too busy listening to Mastodon.
Nice, chilled indie. Never heard of these guys. Loved this, will replay and check out their other stuff.
A very pleasing listening experience. This indie folk record contains a whole lot of contrasting moments in them from a tonal perspective, but it all fits into a beautiful conglomerate of zen from start to finish. I find myself of Ed Droste's voice over Daniel Rossen, but I find it super interesting how they share the lead vocal role. It's something you rarely see in bands today. Favorite Song: Two Weeks Least Favorite: Hold Still
What a lovely album
Really interesting and mind bending indie rock album. Pros for the instrumental arrangements and mixing, the song writing is also pretty top notch. It’s a very good album overall, but it drags in some places cause some songs tend to overstay their welcome occasionally. Still very good- will definitely be listening to again! Almost 5 stars
Despite all the hype this album has received over the years, I’ve somehow gone 12 years without listening to it. Outside of “Two Weeks,” which I’ve heard in countless commercials and grocery stores, this album is pretty different than I was expecting. I like it quite a bit, though probably not as much as I would have had I discovered it at a younger age. Hints of Beach Boys and Radiohead but, like, in a vaguely folky, chamber pop vein. This album got me thinking about a slight tangent…between like 2008-2012 I was so into discovering 90s emo/indie rock bands and emo revival/DIY scene stuff that I missed most of the somewhat more mainstream indie rock stuff that was more popular with most people in my generation. Like Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes, Wye Oak, LCD Soundsystem, MGMT, etc. It’s kinda interesting to me that most of the music I associate with that time period was like 10+ years old at the time.
Pleasantly surprised! Recognised the song “two weeks” from an advert. Very Maccabee vibes.
An elusive and haunting curiosity. An album to return to. Intriguing.
Just within the first minute+ of their first song "Southern Point" you start to get an idea that this isn't going to be easily-categorized. Acoustically-driven "pop" music but with unresolving and unpredictable chord structures punctuated with smooth yet mysterious vocals with lush harmonies... If it sounds like this could be a review of some late-60s folk act, we need to add in just the right dose of synths and looping technology to bring this into the 21st century. Could Grizzly Bear be the CSN for a modern age? (Veckatimest 2009 = Deja Vu 1971?) I was given a copy of this album when it was first released and I don't think gave it the proper settling-in period. To me I needed a return and even then a few successive listens to really get hold of what the band is doing - these are much more complex tunes than you might assume if you have this album on as merely background music. The creative twists and turns in what starts out as a simple piano melody in "Two Weeks" are unexpected and distinguish this band from others. I enjoy the first half more than the second, which still retains that lovely-yet-mysterious sound but many of the songs seem to lumber a bit and ironically may seem to work better as background music (notable exception: "While You Wait For The Others") - TL;DR: would have liked some more up-tempo songs on "Side 2" but overall, more details are revealed upon each listen - recommended and (but?) especially for repeat plays. 7/10 4 stars
Wonderful. Some of the songs I didn’t realize where from this album. Surprisingly pop-ey in places.
This was a really good, calm, and soothing experimental album by the Grizzly Bear. It didn't completely suck me in, but it is something I'll definitely listen to again.
Really good! Kinda reminded me of fleet foxes a little bit
really enjoyed this
Super excited to revisit this album, used to love it when it came out.
Happy that Pete implored me to listen again after my initial review on Saturday. It's certainly a grower that capably invokes a melancholic feeling.
A modern classic.
ate this up at the time, very good but a smidge miserable
Great album, I really dig the indie rock, multiple vocal harmony, reverberated drum and guitar sounds of Grizzly Bear. Of course, I might be a little bit biased, as I have been fan of Grizzly Bear for a long time, but this is some of their best work. Bangers, such as Two Weeks and While you wait for the others make this aloe worth a listen, but the rest of the songs definitely do not feel like filler.
Excellent one of my favorites
Easily my favorite album so far - an easy listen, yet also challenging and genrebending. Somehow a punk rock version of fleet foxes. I'm saving this one
good car music
I loved this record when it came out, so many years ago. The low-fi, shoe gazing vibe was perfect for that summer. For fans of ethereal, well played pop music, this is a must for any list.
Just lovely, great songs and lovely production
I really loved the start and end of this. the middle section was very muddled/low energy but still decent as background music. I could see myself putting this on again, 7/10
Oh quite good! Fell off a bit toward the end but fun musical bits and the vocals just sounded nice. 8/10
7/10, sounds nice enough, but kinda boring. Mumbley lyrics. I got it into my head that he kept starting lines in Cheerleader with "I shitted" and while logic tells me that it is probably "I shouldn't", I couldn't really unhear it. Would be pushing a 6 if I wasn't pretty sure I heard a frog in the background of "I live with you" for like 3 seconds.
Alternative rock at its most intrigant... the textures, that voice, obscure melodies... not easy, but you never get tired of it
I think Southern Point is the first indie rock album opener I have liked in about forever. AH! I remember Two Weeks taking over the world for a hot second. This album has groove, though its a late 2000s indie album. Yea this album was cool.
Some cool sounds but kinda slow and not something I plan to go back to often. 7
Very enjoyable and different. I hear a mix of fleet foxes, steely Dan, and my morning jacket. Beautiful music.
Pretty good chill indie rock. The sort of thing to throw on in the background and not really pay much attention to.
Nice mixture from pop and rock, kind of Britpop
Really enjoyed this, very much an indie, garage sound.
I already had "Two Weeks" liked at this point, this album is really a throwback, but still pretty good. I give it a 4 so far. It starts out strong but becomes background noise.
Quite enjoyable. These guys are cool.
Nice, worth double check
I knew a few of these songs. It's not always my jam but when it works it's nice. I can respect that these are pop-indie-rock songs but there is a bit of nuance to them, some interesting structures/tempo changes. 3.5 up to 4.
Good album. Maybe I'm a little over this sound, but its pleasantly nostalgic for me.
Angry I didn't listen to this in full sooner. Brimming with a melancholic energy that permeates the entire LP. The arrangements are dense but discernible, and the shifting natures of the track means there's never a dull moment.
Love Two Weeksl, but I wasn't quite as wowed by the rest as I'd hoped. Not bad, just not 5 stars.
Trippy und gut
Pretty good stuff.
-Easy to listen to -Vocals jarring at first but got used to them fairly quickly. -Just a chill record
Godt album og meget originalt. Kræver nok lige et genlyt mere. Men masser af fedt musik. Lidt kashmir agtig
Enjoyed this quite a lot!
Si Osef
It started out with a few strong tracks, but meandered through the rest of the album. There are much better albums in the genre than this one. It's not bad, but not great.
Interesting. Probably never listen to it again.
One exceptional song really elevates this album, which is mostly morose indie music. It's the song to album equivalent of LeBron James early in his Cleveland run (apologies to my fave Cav, Big Z). Top tracks: "Two Weeks," "While You Wait for the Others," "Ready, Able"
--Southern Point...some freak folk. weird and cool --Two Weeks...the way these guys wrestle odd sounds into accessible pop is admirable --All We Ask...not as compelling as first two tracks --Fine for Now...challenging but it could definitely grow on me --Cheerleader...not a lot going on with the song structure but the production keeps things interesting --Dory...an LSD dream. a pleasant one --Ready, Able...see "Dory", although I may prefer this --About Face...pretty but boring --Hold Still...see "About Face" --While You Wait for the Others...injects some much needed caffeine --I Live with You...it's all very interesting but it never really congeals --Foreground...sounds like the rest of the album
noce
definitely would have loved this when it came out, and there are a few great hits on here
two weeks sounds nothing like the rest of the album
I don't know what's happened to me, but this is not as great as I remember when I first listened to it when I was younger. 3.5/5. Not quite 3, not quite 4 either.
Not my favorite album I've ever listened to, but unobjectionable
Soooo of its time for better and worse both
Not bad but also not the most interesting album. I like the music but it’s nothing I would listen to again.
eeeeeeOkei... aburrido, no nme molestaria k eeste en el auto pero eee mmm
I have not heard of them. Nice vocals and harmonies. A quiet album. Really stripped down. Genre: indie/alternative No songs really stand out. Not bad. Three stars.
lite meh
They have an interesting and distinctive sound, but it’s not for me.
Bon
Good for background music
Sort of indifferent. Give it another listen.
Decent late 00's rock, very listenable
two weeks is peak
Okay, but nothing that makes we want to listen again. Great musicians, and singers.
3.8
Good not amazing. Two weeks was the only one I knew and only standout.
I really liked just one song
- Another pleasant surprise
Pretty musical, dreamy. Wasn't feeling it at first, it got interesting for spells, and ultimately never really took off for me. When it's good, it's pretty damn good, and when it isn't, it's pretty meh.
Really solid indie rock album. I was surprised to see I already had a song added from the album before I listened. I like the old school sound of the instruments and vocals on this album, it’s reminiscent of 1970s and 1980s soft rock. I would listen to more from this band.
“Two Weeks” is an incredible song. The others songs are different, but didn’t really connect with them. May need to listen again Rating: 6/10 Favorite Song: Two Weeks
“Two Weeks” is one of my favorite songs these past few years but I didn’t really get the rest of the project
Never heard of this but I liked
I hadn't heard this band before. They were pretty good.
flaccid
This is the kind of indie rock album I can appreciate more than I actually enjoy. 𝘝𝘦𝘤𝘬𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘵 is clearly well crafted, with beautiful harmonies, detailed arrangements, and a lot of care put into every song. Everything sounds exactly as it should. The problem is that very little of it really stays with me. The album is pleasant from beginning to end, but it rarely surprises me or gives me a reason to come back. I can hear why people love it, but for me it ends up being a good indie record rather than a great one.
Remember loving this album when it came out but think I've moved on somehow. Two Weeks is a masterpiece still.
Still like this album, can appreciate how good it is, but only 3 stars
Otro disco aclamado que sin embargo a mi no me pareció gran cosa entonces. NI este ni el siguiente e igualmente valorado Shields. Two weeks sí que es una gran canción. La mejor de su repertorio. Otro buen tema es While You Wait for the Others. I live with you me parece la más floja del lote. Buen cierre con Foreground. Buen disco, pero hubo otros mejores: XX, The flaming lips, Animal Collective, Raveonettes, Prefab Sprout, Anthony, Pet Shop Boys...
Different
2,6/5
Olvidable creo
Too stuffy and un-fun to properly enjoy, but "Two Weeks" is a big tune and it's all very nicely composed
Disappointed in this album
Nemo reference
I don't think I'm aware of this artist, and it doesn't look like I recognize any of the tracks by title. So I'm going into this pretty much blind. This is strange and interesting, but I don't think this is something I'd listen to again. Something about it just isn't grabbing me. There are a few tracks where the drummer is doing some great work, but otherwise, this is overall just meh.

I've listened to this album many times over the years, and respect it, but it never really grabbed me in an emotional way. The sound and instrumentals arr all very technically good, and I feel like I should love it on paper, but there's something a bit washed out and distant about most of it. One of the standout tracks, Two Weeks, was great when it came out, but has now been licenced for so many ads that I now mainly associate it with banks and insurance companies. I hope they got well paid for it at least!
I really liked this album when it came out. I still think Two Weeks is a great capture of the sound of that period. However, the rest of the album has not held up for me. Going to go 2.7 on this one. Not horrible, but a fading tribute to 2009.
2010s core
That was alright. I've listen to very similar things when I was a teen. A bit soothing, calming and relaxing. However, as I said, I might be overexposed to those kind of music so it's not really surprising to hear. Lots of similar fish in the sea.
hidastempoista tunnelmallista, laulaja tutun kuuloista. En tarkista mikä
Solid Indie album a few too many songs for my liking
It’s pleasant overall. I like what I’m hearing, but I will say I don’t think they do it better than anyone else so to speak. I’d rather listen to Pet Sounds or Pink Moon or something. It’s also overlong and wore out its welcome.
While I have quite a lot of nostalgia for "Two Weeks" and "Ready Able" from my high school days (right around when this album came out) and as a whole, it's a very well-made indie folk/rock record, absolutely dripping with the hipster vibes of the early 2010s. However, I can totally understand people questioning why the album as a whole deserves a spot on this list. It's fine enough, but arguably muddy and forgettable in certain spots.
One great songs, some other nice tracks, but not something I would return to.
Fairly decent. Two weeks is a very good song. 3*
interesting
Apparently this album was added in the 2011 version of this book, but I have access to the 2018 version where it is notably absent. My assumption is that critics in 2011 saw the explosion of indie inspired folk music hitting the charts and assumed that the Bush Era indie sound will stick around for more than a decade, but alas, this is not true. Within context, I do not think this album deserves to be on this list. It's not really doing anything incredibly different than other "indie" acts at this time, and by 2009, I would basically call this era over and done with. It had hit mainstream. Without context, this is a decent album! It's a little too "I'm so cool, listen to my breathy voice over deceptively complex instrumentation", but it's fun enough to listen to. I understand why it's so poorly received on this site, although I would encourage users that rate this album a 1 because "boring" to learn how to play/record music, you might be a little impressed afterwards.
Not as good as I remembered.
Bit boring to be honest. It was like a slightly less interesting version of The Flaming Lips meets Radiohead. Not for me.
Wanted to like this more than I did, very radio 6. A bit pretentious.
I thought this was OK. Didn’t exactly get my blood pounding. I added “Two Weeks” to my playlist.
Omg what a snore. What a shame to make a 52-minute album with only one good song. Would've rather listened to Two Weeks 12 times. 2.5
I have never heard of this band, but this is why I wanted to try this generator. My streaming service just gives me more of the music I already know and it is boring. I liked this record. Will listen to more of their music.
Late 2000s indie psychedelic folk. Polished but sleepy.
Surpassed by expectations and sounded nice but nothing special.
Not what I was expecting based on their name but I still found it to just be ok.
its exactly like The Suburbs. goes on. nothing notable. was bumpin in the first few songs.
Ni muy muy ni tan tan 5/10
It was fine. Just background noise
