Reviews (page 3 of 7)

Speak to the bumpkin in me, definitely would sit in a field with Mirril drinking some homebrew listening to this album. Very cute! I enjoyed <3

Solid country bumpkinning. I enjoyed it, but wasn't blown away. Didn't get the "Rock 'n' Roll" element the wiki professed to. Felt very standard country. Good twang.

A taste-expanding music moment. Ever walk into a room who’s decor you’d long dismissed as hilariously bad taste, only to realise its sublime charm and how it comforts you in new and expected ways? This album did that Country for me is something to be comically weaponised, like in “Mars Attacks”(against the Martians) Having mostly dismissed country, why do I love this? Maybe because its not country? I read he changing the form. His story is interesting. And So ...maybe this list is achieving what I hoped here - introducing works I would never go near and maybe opening my ears to other sounds. Back to GP, (who died too young and spectacular partial cremation in Joshua Tree (Cap Rock) and his music - A side project: if he is so influential, then listen to his albums and bands in sequence to experience the evolution International Submarine Band (66-68) debut album, Safe at Home. The Byrds ( the Sweetheart of the Rodeo album), apparently a pioneering / seminal progressive country album), thjen the Flying Burrito Brothers, either t, The Gilded Palace of Sin, or Burrito Deluxe - a style called "Cosmic American Music", And maybe his other album - GP For now a reluctant 4. It is so soothing. I think I need a porch swing and a sunset.

So good.

Great stuff. The title track is one of my favorite country tunes, though I prefer Lucinda Williams' and David Crosby's cover. In fact, I generally prefer other people's version of these songs (especially Evan Dando and Juliana Hatfield's cover of $1000 Wedding and The Everly Brothers' original version of Love Hurts). Gram and Lucinda certainly bring their A game (and Gram wrote or co-wrote several of these classics), but there's a softness to the arrangements and the band's performance that takes away one star for me.

This album grew on me. Spare and a little slow at first, then the last 3 songs blew me away. Worth a listen.

Pretty good blend of country and rock

Ooooh Las Vegas is a fun song. Didn’t think I’d enjoy this but it was fun.

very nice

Easy listening country.

I love music so much because country really isn't my thing but this album was so enjoyable. Never know what you will get and if you just keep an open mind you and find enjoyment.

Enjoyable country rock with a light psychedelic tinge.

Feels like The Notorious Byrd Brothers album.

7/10 not really my genre, but still a wonderful album by a very talented artist who passed too soon

This is the good shit

This is a seminal country rock album. Unfortunately this was Gram Parsons’ last and was released posthumously. This album belongs to Emmylou Harris almost as much as it belongs to Parsons but his widow was uncomfortable with her late husband’s artistic relationship with Harris. That said, the harmonies between the two are sublime. Their version of Love Hurts is fantastic as well.

The genre of "Rock Country" reminds me of when metalheads argue about a band being "Stoner Doom Metal" or "Drone Sludge Metal". I get the rationale of differentiating within genre but from an outsider perspective, it's really more important to let me know I'm about to start a country album. That said, this is a very good country album. Emmylou Harris is an absolute gem and Gram Parsons has excellent musicality. I want to rate this 5 stars because I had never heard of Gram before this one, and it caused me to dig into his catalogue over this weekend. However, it is weaker than the rest of his material. I'll remember this one fondly, but it probably won't go into the rotation.

Enjoyed it...country music that is mellow. Album had collaborations with other artists, Emmy Lou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. Not bad...easy listening with nice melodies.

I listened to 4 songs, I like his folk country style. American music! 🇺🇸💪🏼

I'm not into country rock usually but this is an exceptionally great album. His and Emmy Lou's voices were so beautiful together.

R.I.P. Gram Parsons 😭

Banger!!!!

This is a good album, I liked it a lot. My only criticism is that it seemed like occasionally the lyrics tended to meander a bit. Having said that the music is great, and there are some really quotable lines. Some of my favorite tunes on the album were Grievous Angel, Brass Buttons (which is very reminiscent of The Eagles’ Tequila Sunrise), Cash on the Barrelhead/Hickory Wind, Love Hurts (yes THAT Love Hurts), Ooh Las Vegas and In My Hour of Darkness. The addition of Emmylou Harris’ vocals on several of the tracks really adds to the experience.

Warm, engaging, imperfectly pretty, full of heart. Grows on me more each time I hear it. The pasted together quality of this album is hard to ignore, but there are still quite a few charmers to find on here. Gram Parsons' vocals with Emmylou Harris are the best thing about this album. They have a bittersweet chemistry that is rare in music. Fave Songs: Love Hurts, Return of the Grievous Angel, In My Hour of Darkness, Hearts on Fire, Brass Buttons

Recorded right before his death, Gram Parsons left behind a wonderful document of his influence on country. Truthfully, this is just as much an Emmylou Harris album as it is a Gram Parsons album. The two were close contemporaries, leading her to be invited on to provide vocals for all but one song. They are especially great on the live medley that opens side B. Truly, everything about Grievous Angel is magnificent, oftentimes seeming like the rest of country music is trying to catch up to Parsons. What an album.

So far really like the album. It is soothing and enjoyable. Reminds me a little bit of Dan Fogelberg and John Denver :)

Mellow rock album with many lovers tunes. It's enjoyable

Second time listening to this record as well. Great soft-rock country music. Certainly one of the top artists that likely has his best auras when he died.

This was such a wonderful change from most of my recent albums -- I will definitely listen again.

Great album what a voice tragic story.

Tennessee country at its finest. I'm guessing this is the original love hurts song as well.

Excellent mid-century country-rock & roll.

I'm not a country fan but there is something warm and vulnerable about this. Will explore more.

HL: “I Can’t Dance”, “Hickory Wind”, “Love Hurts”, “In My Hour of Darkness” Idk how many versions of “Love Hurts” I’ve listened to at this point but this is easily one of the most moving. Also GP seems to be having more fun here (aside from the devastating ballads) doin his own thing than he did in Sweetheart of the Rodeo! December 21, 2023

This was really solid, classic country. I enjoyed it.

A great country album. Emmylou Harris’ vocals ties it all together so beautifully.

Once I was at a party/bluegrass jam where someone sang Hickory Wind with the melody just a little different at that "it makes me feel better" chord change. It was one of the best things I've ever heard and I'll never hear it again. This album also rules. music: appreciated. (⌐■_■)

Loved this one

Cosmic Country is a lovely genre that I wish didn’t become the stomp n holler genre it is today for California slow rock. The Flying Burritos have a little more adventurous tendencies with their guitar solos, but as a stand alone project this is also great! I love Grams style, and I love the matchup with Emmylou. You could tell me this is outlaw country and I would believe it. Exceptional songwriting and exceptional attention to the detail.

I love Gram Parsons and could listen to him as much as any musician ever, but it’s not a perfect album!

I never knew much about Gram Parsons other than that he was involved with the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers and was very influential in bringing a country flavor to rock. So, I took the opportunity to go down a Gram Parsons Wikipedia rabbit hole while listening to today's album. Here are a few interesting things I learned: He died at only 26 years old, after making this album but before it was released. Very sad. His wife was very jealous of Emmylou Harris, and when Parsons died, she took the opportunity to remove Harris as an equal partner on the album, relegating her to a credit on the back of the album, and removed one song (Sleepless Nights) that heavily featured Emmylou. After he died, his friends, knowing that he loved Joshua Tree and wanted his ashes scattered there, stole his body, drove it to Joshua Tree in a borrowed hearse, poured 5 gallons of gasoline in the open coffin, and threw in a lit match. They were arrested, but there was no law against stealing a dead body, so they were just fined for stealing a coffin and leaving his remains in the desert. Now those are some good friends. Okay, onto the music. I'm funny about country, because some of my favorite music is country/alternative country or whatever you want to call it. Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Wilco, The Be Good Tanyas, and others of that ilk are among my all-time favorite artists. But if the country veers too much into "traditional" country territory then I really dislike it. For me, this album falls right in the middle. I like it, but it's maybe a bit too country-ish for me. Regardless, I'm giving it 4 stars out of respect for the influence that Gram Parsons had on music in his short career.

I can see the soul on display, and I get the tragic bent to it. But I do think it is maybe a notch down from 5, due to lacking a strong shine for me.

Good stuff

Classic country, Gram Parsons even has the authentic real life experience which makes the album that much more genuine. Country music at its core can be an excellent story told thru song of real experiences both hard or joyful. Somewhere along the timeline soft southern boys grabbed hold of it and ruined the genre and made a mockery of it. It’s coming back around but what Parsons and Emmylou Harris did here was genuine country music, boisterous Cash on the Barrelhead was a riot and the toned down twang of Hearts on Fire was beautiful. The story of Parsons death and following theft of his body only add to the lore. Great twang! 4 stars

Sad cowboy 🤠 good

No johan onpas hyvä. Ehkä paras kuulemani kantrilevy. Voisi ostaa cd:nä autoon road trippejä varten, jos omistaisin auton.

Country is always nice to me, but it's a bit plain

Force me to listen to this a few more times I might start liking it! Standouts: Love Hurts 3.5

Really great album and I largely hate Country music (mostly contemporary Country). That it was a nice listen and even more impressive considering he died at 26. 7/10

Some good songs, Emmylou Harris deserves as much credit as Gram though.

Excellent

Gram Parsons va brillar més en els seus discos en solitari que amb els seus treballs amb bandes tan documentades i reivindicades com The Byrds i The Flying Burrito Brothers.

Short and sweet

I don’t know what you’d call Grahams sound. Well, besides fantastic. Mixing country, blues, bluegrass and folk with a little help from friend Emmylou Harris he crafts one of the 1970s first country releases. A simply produced expertly executed melange of sound and feeling. A true artist gone far too soon.

Great harmonies from Emmylou Harris, clean production. I'm a sucker for a slide guitar. Favorite tracks: "Return of the Grievous Angel", "I Can't Dance", "Medley Live from Nothern Quebec"

I enjoyed this quite a bit. An Emmylou Harris guest spot is always appreciated ttoo.its too bad Gram passed away so young.

Emmylou makes everything better, yeah?

Cosmic American music as described

Always liked this sound from the 70’s with the melding of country and soft rock.

i liked it a lot more than i expected to. i went in expecting modern country, which i find absolutely intolerable, but i found this a lot more pleasant and folksy. it's not really exciting, but it's nice enough that i can't give it a three, which i wanna reserve for really 'ok' stuff. sounded a lot like fallout new vegas music (which makes me want to play it again). pretty nostalgic-sounding, it reminded me of hawaiian music. this is pretty much the only form of country music i can tolerate; four stars.

Had not listened to Grievious Angel for a long time (usually prefer to go for Sweetheart of the Rodeo or so) but GA is an excellent album of course: perfect vocals, best version of Love Hurst, several other 5-star songs such as 1000 dollar wedding, in my hour of darkness. The other songs are obviously strong as well, but I care less about them. Overall score: 8/10 (mainly 3-star and 4-star songs and three absolute 5-star songs)

This is really Parsons & Harris, their voices combine excellently with each other.

Cosmic American Music. It's great revisiting Parsons who was easily the best known of this genre of 70s country music that has spawned so much interest in mining compilations from he likes of archival labels like Numero Group. This record is beautiful and sound such a part of the fabric of American music. An absolute pleasure to listen to.

I thought this was a very good country album-- I love Emmylou Harris-- but not something I see myself revisiting

These songs are smooth and frictionless, it's hard to find anything wrong with them - does that mean they're perfect, or does it mean they're boring? The only real moment of confusion for me was the random live track. Ok, I'm reading now that the live track was fake, with canned applause, which actually makes it even more confusing. Overall though, really solid songs and performances.

Country-rock suave con voces muy logradas. Agradable de escuchar. Algún tema muy reconocible.

Late, great Gram Parsons!

7/10. Solid country

Pretty decent old school country. I'm a sucker for a lap steel guitar, so that bumps it up for me too.

Pretty nice country, and I like how Parsons’ back-up singer compliments him. Maybe not the most exciting sound out there, but it works pretty well together. B-

J'ai le gotu de dire que c'est un bon album générique de Country comme il y en a beaucoup sur cette liste. J'ai aimé, mention special pour Quebec :p 4

Little bit of twang to this, a pretty enjoyable listen

God this album went bananas. Favourite tracks are probably track 2 and I think 4? Beautiful soundscapes great stuff from Garth brooks

I enjoyed it!

It was pretty good. Nothing too extraordinary about it but I enjoyed it. 7/10

Splendid country album

to be honest i only listened to a few songs, but I actually liked it. good folk music, good voice

Hat mich bisschen in a nonchalant way. country rock

Honkytonk spongebobesque folky rock. Not my vibe but it’s ok

It’s country. It rocks.

It's 3.5

The first song feels like this album starts in the middle of a thought. The third song feels like it would've been well-suited to be the first track, though. I kind of enjoyed this, kind of didn't. As I've gotten more into country rock, it's good to listen to some of the older stuff, too.

Pretty decent, chilled country. Similar to some other country albums on this list, nothing special but an easy listen.

Not my music

Pleasant and forgettable

Country music from the 70s with Emmylou Harris. Favorite tracks: love hurts other picks: brass buttons, return of the grievous angel

Buen disco country la verdad.

nice and folky!

Country queen realness. 3.

Country is still not my favorite genre, but this album was not too bad. The music was good and the vocals were nice. I would say my favorite song from the album was the cover of Love Hurts.

The first rule of songwriting is to write what you know. In Gram Parsons’ case this was booze, shotgun marriages, doomed love affairs and spitting in the eye of the Grim Reaper. He certainly packed a lot into his tragically short life. He played music from an early age, formed several successful bands and joined The Byrds in 1968 aged just 22 and then quit on principle over a planned tour of apartheid South Africa. He got to know Keith Richards, formed yet another band (The Flying Burrito Brothers) before meeting the then unknown Emmylou Harris who he recruited for his two solo albums. At this time he was struggling with a crippling drug addiction and alcoholism, but somehow managed to make a solid country rock album greatly elevated by Harris’ vocals, especially on the duets Love Hurts and In My Hour of Darkness. By rights Harris should have been co-credited for this album, but when Parsons died of an inevitable overdose, his jealous estranged wife removed her from the cover. Her 1975 song Boulder to Birmingham shows how much he meant to her. Another tragic member of the rockstars die young club.

6/10 Empezó medio country, no me disgusto pero tampoco es un estilo que me fascine, después bien pero tampoco nada wow

Got into this a little more than expected given it's pretty much out and out country..liked the Emmy vocals and dug the vibraphones on 2nd track. Calling this "Cosmic American Music" might be overplaying the hand a little, though...

Folk/Early Rock

Shout out Emmylou Harris

Pretty chill country album. I like grams voice and some of the songwriting here is pretty good e.g. $1000 wedding. But that's pretty much all I've got to say about it. Not bad not great 6/10 Favourite: Grievous Angel Least Favourite: Medley Live From Northern Quebec

I feel like this music is a bit run of the mill but I didn't dislike this. I'm not sure what sets this apart from other similar acts that warrants putting it on this list.

Every time I hear a Gram Parsons record I'm always impressed with the sound, especially given the era. If you're looking for that pre "my truck/ dog/beer" Nashville pop country slop, you could do way worse than this one.

This is nice country album before country went up its own ass

Überraschend schön, entspannt und nice Mischung von country, blues und singer-songwriter balladen Fav $1000 Wedding, brass buttons

Not a big country guy but I do feel like it's an overhated genre, this site included.

It’s ok to listen too. Love Hirts is a huge hit but the rest is not really my cup of tea.

This was an excellent rock/county record. I see all these terrible reviews and I don't get it. I would say a 3.5 but that's not an option

Blues un peu country

J’ai trouvé ça drôle à écouter haha

Grievous Angel was the second and final solo album for Gram Parsons. Parsons initially found fame as a member of the Flying Burrito Brothers, His solo career was tragically cut short; he died of an overdose well before Grievous Angel was released. The album was critically very well received, but achieved only limited commercial success. Parsons is credited with helping to push the integration of country into rock music. He frequently collaborated with Emmylou Harris, who is a background vocalist on but one of the tracks on the album.

I appreciate some old school, twangy country, but a little goes a long way for me. With Gram not having a terribly good voice, it was the angel-like harmonies of Emmylou that saved this for me. Worth a listen, but doubt I'll be back.

Pretty middle of the road "no complaints from me" classic country, but nothing stands out to push the rating about three stars. Standout track: Ooh, Las Vegas If you didn't read the Gram Parsons Wikipedia article, do so. Guy had an interesting life, death, and post-death, for sure. On another note, Parsons was in the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and made two solo albums before he turned 27. It's amazing to me to see the monumental amount of creative productivity of some of these musicians while they're basically kids. And this one in particular was instrumental in the creation of an entire genre of music. Wild stuff. Humans are amazing

More country than rock. The best part for me was Emmylou Harris on most of the songs. Not really my kind of music but nothing that was particularly bad about it.

My country knowledge is strictly mid 90s variety and Jolene by Dolly Parton. I can appreciate this but I don’t know any of it except what looks like an original version of love hurts.

Return of the Grievous Angel is a great song. There are a few others, but too many pass by in a blur.

p336. 1974. 3 stars. Accessible and influential early 70s country rock that paved the way for the Eagles. Some great songs here, but there is also a lot of filler and it does stray into yeehaw a little too much.

emmy lou is amazing; otherwise, this is a fantasy camp country album

Stands above lots of the other old country offerings, sounds good and smooth and I like their voices together Some of the songs lose a little of the shine, I liked the first few tracks the most

enjoyable - easy listening nothing special VERY country like so stereotypical country sounds like dolly parton on backing but it isnt love hurts stand out

The country sound on Grievous Angel is fantastic, and I wish the album had the songs to match it. The twang and pedal steel are both excellently balanced against the rock sound, combining to form something to satisfy both rockers and country traditionalists. The album's (not so) secret weapon is Emmylou Harris, whose vocals improve every song they're on. But the songwriting contains such a lack of variety that the album becomes a drag. Most of the slow songs contain a similar pacing and progress linearly with nothing but lyrics to separate them. For every amazing "Love Hurts" there's an overlong "$1000 Wedding." The upbeat songs feel a bit too gimmicky, and while country is not always a serious genre they stand in stark contrast to the druggy depression of the album's best songs. Worth listening to for the best songs, but I can't put this alongside the best country rock has to offer.

Not bad not bad

Pretty cool Country music, but it's also Country music.

Decent album, did love the songs with Emmylou Harris. I would listen to it again. Love Hurt was the highlight for me.

Fun and short. For those of who grew up with crappy stadium pop country, it’s nice to go back to things like this

Not that bad it could have been worse

Could have been much worse

A. i didn’t know he wrote Love Hurts B. How long has EmmyLou Harris been around?

it alright.

Decent for yeehaw, I don't mind it

This was quite fun, and not as dreary as I was expecting it to be.

Fun to listen to but that was about it. Couple standout songs, Emmylou Harris kills it on the bg vox.

my nigga. whom? yt music put big star in the recs; i assume that's a good barometer. streets calling this the first alt-country album. streets also saying he was on some unrequited love shit w/ emmylou. nonetheless we move. cook stove chef (based god): 1, 4 (decent but boring), 5 (standout) redeeming traits: 2 (harmonies), 3(instrumental), 6 (instrumental/harmonies/FX), 7 (harmonies {reoccurring gag [i've had that one before]}; how many times will i have to hear "love hurts" before this is through?), 8 (instrumental {harmonies are wasted on this one. you can't do "countryman depraved gambling rolling stone" songs with emmylou streisanding it. that said. mf do you HEAR this solo‽}) eh: 9 (harmonies are nice yada yada). if i have to hear people harmonize christ related lyricism i'm Just listening to boney m. putting the lyric "oh lord grant me speed" before singing a eulogy to your dealer (among other things) is p funny. considering. y'know. the circumstances. lowk bores me. even the songs with redeeming traits are kinda boring. rolling stone Def racist cause you can't tell me there's isn't at least a hundred albums better OAT. astaghfirullah if another song ends on a resolving chord reverbing out with steel pedal 🫥. that said the harmonies are fueg. al perkins' Tearing it up on the steel. another testament to the power of having insane studio guys making nice sounding mid. 3.2-3.8.

Title song is solid and some tracks there that I didn’t realize he wrote or he also covered which were nice surprises.

The back end of this album is 100% better than the first half. A few classics.

Decent, but it didn't exactly blow me away. Kind of listened to it in a hurry, to be fair, it probably deserves a second listen. Favourite track: I Can't Dance

On Grievous Angel, Gram Parsons leans all the way into his vision of cosmic American music, but the result feels more like a hazy Sunday morning than a revelation. Anchored by lush pedal steel and an easygoing sway, the album’s real spark comes from Emmylou Harris, whose luminous harmonies nearly steal the show—honestly, this might as well be a co-billed affair. Parsons keeps things mellow to a fault, settling into a narrow groove that rarely breaks stride, which makes the record drift by pleasantly but without much urgency. There are flashes of something sharper: the title track, “Return of the Grievous Angel,” opens things with a rambling charm (even if it overstays its welcome), “Ooh Las Vegas” kicks up some dust with a welcome shot of tempo and a faint Johnny Cash-like swagger, and “Love Hurts” lands with quiet, aching grace. Still, for all its beauty, Grievous Angel plays it so safe that it risks fading into the background—easy on the ears, but not quite hard to forget.

takie troche dalo mi vibe spongeboba lepsze napewno niz to co mi tu ostatnio serwowali

This is definitely an album that exists

I am not sure why this album is getting so ravaged because it seems pretty straightforward to me. I do think that Emmylou Harris is carrying it a bit and if it was just him it would probably be kind of unbearable. The low energy tracks were not my favorite but I thought the fast, high energy songs were awesome.

This was an easy listen. I loved Emmylou Harris's backing vocals and collaborations, and I appreciated the chemistry. The steel guitar and songs about pain and drinking tended toward country music, but other elements brought to mind some of The Eagles' countrified work. I could hear how Parsons was bringing folk and country toward rock, an effort that continued after his death in 1973.

Almost made country fun but then went right back to sad boy cowboy music.

That was lovely!

I thought it was enjoyable if not particularly memorable.

I liked the live medley! That was fun

Yeah, I guess it's important but it just felt meh

I'm always surprised by how much I enjoy old-school country. Emmylou Harris might be the best part of this album, but Gram Parsons has a particular sound that serves the music well, even if it's rather more nasal than I prefer. "$1000 Wedding" and "In My Hour of Darkness" were standouts for me.

Favorite track(s): Return of the Grievous Angel, Brass Buttons, In My Hour of Darkness

I liked this album. It had the right mix of country and storytelling. While this would be Gram Parsons's farewell, it would the take-off needed for Emmylou Harris. She shines on this album. $1000 Wedding is simply exceptional. Highlights: Hearts on Fire Brass Buttons $1000 Wedding Love Hurts In My Hour of Darkness

It was fine, some was emotion filled, some was just there.

Good songwriting (some written by Parsons) well played with those beautiful Emmylou Harris backing vocals. It's not my genre, but I appreciate it.

Never listened. Expectations: High - Verdict: Good - I love his work with The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers but have somehow never given this a proper listen. The songcraft is very confident right from the start and his voice is beautiful. Delicate and understated and melancholic. I think maybe the performance is more impressive than the material itself. This is still a really good listen and deserves a spot on the list but there is just a little spark missing.

One Gram is the correct amount of Parsons. Disclaimer: Dosage recommendations vary based on body weight, tolerance, and several additional factors. Please consult a professional before starting Parsons.

Remember when country wasn't just pop with a twang sung by some affectatious jerk in a cowboy hat? Pepperidge Farm remembers. Not bad for country, which isn't a genre I care too much for. Got a few bangers on here, a few crooners, one instance of surprise yodeling, some stuff I think is supposed to make me sad but I can't quite understand the story so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. The audience on the live track are *rowdy* XD. Not mad at it. I'd like to highlight that it isn't all love songs - props. \m/

Nice album with a cool 70s feel. Nice harmonies. I liked the song that gave a shout out to my favorite thing about SC. The oak trees.

Not bad but not really my thing.

Perfectly fine country album. Not going to be my first choice off the shelf.

This was a great background listen. Just some nice pleasing country music.

This a solid listen. The Emmylou Harris vocals and the quality of the musicians elevate it to above average for sure. Not quite enough for me to round up but it is a solid 7/10. 3.5/5

Had me cracking up that the opening line for 6 out of the 9 songs is the title of the song. This was fine but $1000 wedding and the version of love hurts had me wanting to round down.

This is a solid Emmylou Harris album! 3.5/5

Nice country rock album. I don’t mind being in Gram Parsons’s company at all. Very pleasant. Lovely version of “Love Hurts” too.

This record rocks. Vocals are great, orchestration is superb, production is nice, and there's some nice sentimentality on the album. "Love Hurts" is a really nice tune; even if when I hear it I think about the song being used mockingly in movies and TV shows when a character gets broken up with. The two hard-panned voices sound very intimate, and I love the chords. Nice record! Cool album cover too.

The roots of Americana

Country album with some solid vocals.

Wel oke

Some good ol country fried rock! Good listen through and through. All the elements of good country music!

I didn't hate it. Behalve die faux live medley halverwege, that's a naw from me dawg

boring to me. really not my kind of music. but i guess not objectively bad or anything.

Es ist ein Country-Album mit rockigen Ansätzen. "Brass Buttons" ist eine schöne Ballade. Und die Coverversion von "Love Hurts" ist hörenswert. Ich schwanke zwischen 2 und 3 Sternen...

competent but utterly disposable country

Like most country, this is absolutely gorgeous music that just does not speak to me whatsoever. I think most music obsessives go through a country phase at least once in their lives and at 43 years old, I'm beginning to think that's just not going to happen to me.

This is nice and perfect working background music, was between a 2.5 to 3 for me

Nice vibes.

Enjoy GP. Great sound.

If you haven't seen it, go watch the Ask a Mortician video about the theft of Graham Parson's body. It's more interesting than this album, which was fine but lacked anything that particularly stood out. https://youtu.be/bYuNKbxnZDc?si=VRq6XIAOxFJ5t4IX

I liked his burrito bros stuff more.

Not great. But better than I thought.

Pleasant enough but nothing special

Like many other older country albums, this was pretty well down the middle for my tastes. This had less twang which was nice, and really shined with the male/female vocal dynamics with Emmylou Harris.. overall 3.25/5

I can see myself listening to this again if I'm ever in the mood.

First country album and I was kind of disappointed after seeing how well-received the album is. While the songwriting definitely shone in parts, a lot of the album was just kind of boring to me and didn't stand out enough to leave the impression it has on other people. The back half of the album saved this from being entirely negative, but just barely. Favorite Songs: "$1000 Wedding", "Love Hurts", "Ooh Las Vegas" Least Favorite Song: "Medley Live From Northern Quebec" Low 3.

Too country for me at the start, but loved I Can't Dance which was more rock, and Brass Buttons and $1000 Wedding both have a lovely wistful air. Cool to be reminded what a good song Love Hurts is; nice version too. Ooh Las Vegas is too country for me but instrumental start is amazing. In My Hour of Darkness is sweet.

I’d listen to this 1,001 times before I ever listen to any of that electronic garbage that is on this list one times too many.

vaguely beige sleepy country easy listening for your grandma. it's well-produced, but I feel no desire to relisten.

A little over produced for my liking when it comes to country. The songs themselves are solid and well performed, mind.

3-4 Love hurts is schön

Me ha gustado, y ya. Country guay de la radio del GTA

I'm not dead yet and I'm glad I listened. It's a great country album with some classic twang and even some yodeling. I'm no country fan, but I appreciated this one. 6/10

Takie na 3. Przyjemne country

I like some country, but not the twangy, yankyouroverall staps, side kicks country. some lovely tracks, beautiful sweet arrangements and of course Emmylou luuuuv her! All that said, this is not my genre at all - 2 tracks were enough to last me

Enjoyed this. Not usually a fan of country, but this rocked a little and had some nice ballads. Sounds like he may have had an influence on Eagles. Great harmonies with the amazing Emmylou Harris, particularly on Love Hurts. Shame that he OD’d before this got released.

there are other country albums I would rather have on here but it wasn't bad overall

nice enough

traditional country rock, I'm not a country person so it'll be interesting to see if I like this. Well, just realizing love hurts wasn't written by Nazareth after listening to this album lol. Eh, some songs I liked, some songs I did. prob go a 5/10

This all sounds terrific and Emmylou really sparkles, but Gram’s just never done that much for me as a vocalist whether here, his other solo work, or in bands. Maybe need to return to this in the future, I could see a few of these really jumping out at me on a mix or the radio, they capture such a vibe, but all at once, it’s a bit samey.

This album really surprised me, as I didn’t think I’d like this style of music ! Favorite Track : Brass Buttons 3.5/5

a pleasant little album, idk didn't do too much for me

This is pretty cool! Sad about Emmylou Harris. I wasn’t ever a huge fan of Gram Parsons, but I just let myself vibe to this one while I cooked breakfast for my wife, and it was really nice. Would probably listen to this again in the future when the mood strikes.

I struggled to get all the way through this one and I'm not sure if it's because I was busy or if I just couldn't get into it. The story behind it is wild, and I have to respect Mr. Parsons for being the prototype country-rock guy. Emmylou Harris I feel really shines on this album. She was the highlight here for me. I Can't Dance was probably my favorite throughout the album. It was pretty fun.

This is a very fine country album that I first heard thanks to Vinyl Me, Please (I really cannot mourn their old Essentials line enough -- their scumbag CEO really ruined a great service that introduced me to a lot of albums that have become central to my collection). After playing it a couple of times, though, I never played it again. It was nice to revisit it today. Gram's voice is great and Emmylou Harris is a queen (I, too, would be jealous if I were Gram's wife). I didn't feel like this listen revealed anything particularly special.

Odd but relaxing

The guy who gets all the credit that;s really due to Mike Nesmith.

I knew this one from it being a favorite of my dad and listened a year or two ago. I had fun listening again and think he has a great voice. Very Willie-esque, Eagles, Buffalo Springfield Americana sound and like the songs with Emmy Lou Harris. Lyrics hit harder when you know he overdosed around the time of the release.

It's a pretty standard country album, doesn't hit anything special for me. I'd rather listen to Emmylou on her own. Loved the fiddles though. Certainly not a bad listen but didn't grab me.

Pleasant country. Parsons sounds rough on some of these tracks. Harris absolutely should've been credited.

Standard country rock album with no real stand out tracks. Best part was Emmylou.

My thoughts upon hitting play on the first track went something like this: “oh slide guitar, I wasn’t expecting this to be so country, wasn’t this guy in the byrds? Holy shit is that Emmylou Harris?!?” Upon quick googling, it sure is! I had no idea she was involved in this project so extensively, which I guess was the intention of Gram Parsons’ wife when putting this record together after his death. I have to admit I’m not entirely in love with parsons’ vocals, he’s got the style down for this rock n’ country style, but something about the timbre in his voice doesn’t do a lot for me. Emmylou Harris is definitely the bright spot vocally on this record, along with a pretty bitchin’ appearance by Linda Ronstadt. Instrumentally I liked this album a fair bit, but it’s definitely bog standard through a lens of both country and rock n’ roll. No boundaries pushed here, aside from maybe the fusion in the first place? Fun record, likely won’t be rushing to play it again, but it wasn’t at all unenjoyable.

that's a nice twangy country album, not major complaints. $1000 wedding is one of the all time weird ass haunting sad country songs.

Coming right off a Waylon Jennings country album, we jump straight back into the genre with a take on country that's a little bit better in most ways. Still, banjos and lutes abound. The style is too intensely proud of itself and too consistent. And yes, that is a flaw. The best albums and artists are those that can showcase a wide variety of styles and musical ideas. Gram Parsons does neither in this instance. All of the tracks are the same brand of sweet, warm, but ultimately bog-standard, country rock with possible nods to blues. Finding anything particularly outstanding here is an impossible feat. Also, the year is goshdarn 1974. The Dark Side Of The Moon had come out the year before, Queen were releasing their incredible second and third records, and Steely Dan were ratcheting up their musical complexity with Countdown To Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic, and Joni Mitchell put out the sublime Court and Spark. If their competition is Grievous Angel, then I'm not surprised they took off (and Parsons didn't). The female vocal is noticeably easier to listen to than the male one. I wish her (aptly) angelic voice would get some time in the spotlight without Parsons blurring the experience. Isn't this record meant to be about angels? (Maybe Parsons himself is the reason why the angel is grievous.) Ooh Las Vegas is the clear frontrunner on the album for having energetic guitar, drums, and vocal parts. Not that there's a single bad track. All nine songs shine in some capacity, but Ooh Las Vegas vastly outshines them. Well, the opening track does too. Return of the Grievous Angel is a positive, hopeful way to start off the record. Of course, that's before you listen to all of the extremely similar songs after that point. 3/5 Key tracks: Return of the Grievous Angel, Ooh Las Vegas

Pretty good country album. I enjoyed this one. Not much else to say, other than this is a good pick for some good ol' country.

This reminded me of a $1000 Wedding.

I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. Not bad, but not great.

imagine hating someone so much you change the album cover so their face isn’t on it? that’s dedication!

I dig the instrumentals but the overall sound is a little too James Taylor California soft rock for me. It’s like that but a little more country leaning, more fiddle and stuff which is cool. The lady singer who does harmonies was really good too.

Not at all what I was expecting but pretty fun

2/3. I hear so much Emmylou Harris on this album and that alone makes it great. But the songwriting and lyrics, particularly on Grievous Angel and $1000 Wedding are fantastic. Cool chilled out country sound, and I like the upbeat live track too. Pleasant surprise overall.

The lyrics were good. The music was solid.

Nice aber für mich einfach Country

It was a good mix of rock with country music. He has a good voice.

There was some familiarity to it that made it even better

Fine, he sounded fine, Emmylou Harris was good, songwriting was fine. Everything was just fine.

since we've had 2 days of back to back looooooong electronica 90's music, this gets a bump up just because it's got actual lyrics, and music (not a few notes on a constant loop).

I think this is my second album from the project that Gram Parsons is attached to in one way or another. I was totally shocked that I loved The Flying Burrito Brothers, so I had high hopes for one of his solo records. I also was pleasantly surprised with the Emmylou Harris album I listened to a few weeks back, so that added to those high hopes. I didn't like the first couple of songs on this, however. I'm not much of a fan of country music, and I think it takes me a few songs to adjust. But less than midway through I think there was less twang and more straight singing, so I enjoyed Brass Buttons and $1000 Wedding. The medley got me turned off again, but Love Hurts (wonderful) and In My Hour of Darkness were both absolute plusses. All of that said, I'm not sure exactly how I feel about the album. I will let it stew for a bit and figure that out.

Not my genre but ok for what it is.

$1000 Wedding is a song for the ages, but the rest didn’t really stand out to me. Song added to the playlist: $1000 Wedding

Country music, not my cup of tea, although I occasionally like a sponge here and there. Not bad for having on the background, but it didn't make me go and discover other albums. 2,5/5.

This is one of those albums where my immediate reaction was not good, but quickly found myself enjoying it. His singing honestly isn't great, but it works, and having Emmylou Harris backing is fantastic. Some of the more honky tonk stuff I'm not a fan of but songs like Brass Buttons are great. Overall, decent record.

Good country background music, but I struggle to see what makes this unique, or why they opted to just slap a live track right in the middle? Good, but not exceptional. 3*

Ah, this guy was in The Byrds. This is some pretty chill country. Almost an easy listnin' country. I love the guy/girl harmonies. Ooh Las Vegas was a favorite for being upbeat. This was a good album, but I don't think it needed to be on this list. 3

Pleasant enough but mostly boring (2.5)

Dig it.

Passed me by

When someone accidentally spills a drop of rock into your glass of classic country music. Its fine Emmylou Harris sounds good here, but overall its not really a standout album anywhere. I suppose it paves the way for acts to follow, if anything.

Fine if forgettable country music with a slight rock tinge. I don’t think I’ll be returning to this one

Just a real easy album to listen to.

this was good, i liked it

In a word: ~ Meh ~ Didnt hate it but didnt love it and more than likely wont listen to it again.

It's fine. I don't particularly care for the dual singers at the same time on nearly every song. It's not an offensive album, but also not particularly gripping. Sort of going for that Neil Young/John Denver vibes, but doesn't quite have the same staying power as either of those. It feels dated, and not something I would particularly enjoy listening to for longer than now.

I'M BACK de brüeder vom alan?? komisch, dass the flying burrito brothers kein erfolg gha hend hmmm s erste lied hetmi jz nöd so umghaue, cute aber böö dito für die nächste paar lieder, eifach chli langwilig? d sängerin erinneretmi mengisch chli ah abba hahaha AHAAA er isch bi the byrds gsi jaa ok. easy, aber langwilig und zumindest für mich absoluuut nüt speziells. aber I guess damals ischs öppis speziells gsi? weg dem es 3

I’ve never heard him because I thought he was basically Neil Young. So… I guess he isn’t.

Weird album with some countrified covers. I’d heard the name but not the music. Overall it was alright.

No idea who this guy is (maybe i've heard his name before?) but I liked it ! Sort of along the lines of Eagles + Ronstadt (esp with the Emmylou Harris feature)

3.3 Ive never listned to GP, although I always knew the name. Im a sucker for Emmylou.

It was fine. Nice title.

För mig lät detta som hyfsat generisk countryrock från den här tiden. Var ändå rätt trevlig lyssning, även om inte så mycket står ut. Stabil trea.

Sorry Gram Parsons, I really should give you another go but this was all pretty boring for a lord of country music. Nice but boring. I reckon he has more interesting work. The lowest of 3s.

59/100. A decent country record with some solid songwriting. A few strong moments, but overall not something I’d return to often.

This felt very country - enjoyed Brass Buttons.

Surprised by this one! More country than I expected.

Better than expected.

Decent listen.

Parsons' cosmic country doesn't entirely connect with me, but the lap steel shimmers throughout, and Emmylou Harris' harmonies hint at the luminous career she'd build after his untimely death.

A nice enough album on the whole. Was a bit boring though and forgettable 3 ⭐️

Too country for me, but some beautiful songs.

Few gems especially the Love Hurts cover.

I’m not usually a huge country fan, but this was pretty great!

Fine, a little boring. I think I would enjoy this artist live.

An ok country album, which instantly makes it a very boring experience for me. 2.5/5

This was good. Considered giving it 4 stars.

Country, men et ganske godt album. Specielt Emmilou.

Better than Coldplay

It’s all pleasant but it also stops at being average country music. I’d lower one or two keys for many tracks for him. His voice shines between C3-G3 ish, e.g., Brass Button is a good range for him.

old school country with some real blugrass twang. i honestly enjoyed this one quite a lot. i could see myself going back to this, but... country isn't really my genre. its gonna be a three for me, for a nice album i can appreciate

I enjoyed the country and folk vibes, but wasn’t really anything that stuck out or separated this album from others. Mediocre in my opinion, wouldn’t seek out this album specifically in the future.

As good to any other country western album I've listened to. I think western music is to me, as jazz is to most people. It just all sounds the same.

Good album

An easy listen. The duet pieces are great. Stand out song - Love hurts

Album tak nudny, że podczas słuchania zapomniałam, że go słucham i kompletnie się wyłączyłam. Gdy zaczęli jodłować I totally lost it… Najlepsza piosenka: Love Hurts

Listened to it without my full attention. Probably would have been more enjoyable if I listened to the lyrics better.

Easy listen. Had never listened to Gram Parsons before and did not know what to expect. Not my favorite genre to listen to, but I mostly enjoyed these songs. Medley Live from Northern Quebec and Ooh Las Vegas were my favorite tracks and excited me the most.

Pre Thoughts: - I have a feeling this is either gonna be gas or abs trash, will be no in between - Not familiar with Parsons work personally, aside from some singles with The Byrds. - I think we're in for something really good, expecting some Laurel Canyon style stuff. During Thoughts: - really giving me a strong adult contemporary vibe. First couple tracks have some cool auxiliary instruments (fiddle, vibraphone) - This sounds like Emmylou Harris on "Hearts on Fire", which give some cred. After some reading, she did a lot of arranging on this albums and was one of his main collaborators. That's cool. - Performances are great on this, lot of sorrow in his vocal. - I think theres something to be said about him trying to pioneer this specific blend of folk, rock and country. You know so many artists followed this blueprint moving forward. - A live cut in the middle of a record is kind of polarizing, in this it feels like it works just well enough for me not to be like ew. - this rendition of Love Hurts feels much more fitting to the lyrical content than the Nazareth version I feel like is the flagship version for so many. - Little Linda Ronstandt action on last track, nice! Post-thoughts: - I think for the time theres definitely some forward thinking arrangements on this album - Would this be the first album I listen to from around this scene/time? probably not, not even second or third really, but i think theres merit in the ideas. - Emmylou Harris's performance was a highlight, I also enjoyed the moody songwriting. - I think it does read as AC which for some reason im wrestling with. I def think this album is worth giving a try at least once. Standouts: hearts on fire, brass buttons, In My Hour of Darkness

It was good, a little slow and really hard to get into to start. Return of the Grievous Angel (shoutout general Grievous) and Love Hurts were both very good

Woke up this morning to George listening to the last song on the album on the speaker— which was very slow and sounded like something my Sito would listen to while cooking up a scrumptious Lebanese dinner. Therefore, I went into this album thinking it was going to be a slow, slog; something that would cause my dumb brain, which requires constant stimulation and silly memes to keep me attended, to quickly lose interest. Well…. I was wrong and overall pleasantly surprised. Return of the Grievous Angel, I can Dance, and Ooh Lost Vegas were my favs songs. Cash on the Barrelhead/Hickory Wind was an absolute bop as well with a Baby Keem-type beat switch— I’m sure Keem draws some his inspiration from this Gram Parsons gem. Didn’t love nor hate the slower-paced songs of the album but I could see myself spinning again due to the mentioned songs I enjoyed. Therefore I’d give it a solid 3** (shoutout Mr. Tarett, my freshman guitar teacher). I’m sure my grandma would give this a 5/5 though. Also, I want to give a shoutout to Ursetti— that’s my lawyer he got me off them charges. **To earn a 3 or greater on the chuck rating scale (CRS™️) the album must be re-spinnaker in its entirety**

This just seems like one of those albums that’s on the list primarily because the artist died young from drugs. This is overall a bit twangy for my tastes, but it has Emmylou Harris on vocals, which helps. 2 songs I know, Love Hurts (decent), and Brass Buttons, a very lovely song that is even more lovely in Poco’s version. 2.5 rounded up for Brass Buttons.

It was ok but wouldn’t go back to it.

Not a huge country fan

Loved hearing Emmylou Harris on second vocals. An interesting mix of clean country and soft rock.

gram parsons a low 3 for me, enjoyed 2-3 of the tracks a fair bit but ultimately too straight up country for my tastes, lovely to hear an early emmylou though who sounds great duetting with gram

Not my thing

The whitest of white people music. “I can’t dance” stands out as a shining example of this. I liked “Brass Buttons”. Also very much enjoyed “Love Hurts” I like the back half of the album better than the starting half.

This album was alright

This is one of the records on this list that I wouldn't have visited without this type of list. It's Not a bad record and I'm glad I heard it but I'm skeptical that I'll ever revisit it.

Country music. It is ok but not exciting. His singing is off from time to time

I kind of enjoyed this tongue in cheek country.

He has a great voice but I wouldn't go back to this

5/10… Country

Prettyyy goooooooddddd
