return of the grievous angel- 5 hearts on fire- 5 i cant dance- 5 brass buttons- 5 $1000 wedding- omg he died of morphine i care now. 6 medley live from northern quebec- hold up. okay only the first bit is good the second half is okay ig so 6 love hurts- 5 or 6 ooh las vegas- 5 in my hour of darkness- 5 not my style, but this has more soul in it than a lot of country, so ill give it that
“Just another country album” doesn’t apply here - Parsons’ second and final LP released months after his death holds all that is both lovely while still having more modern, rockin’ parts that place it firmly away from your average 50s / 60s record you’d find in a discount bin. This is most elevated by the presence of Emmylou Harris, her backing vocals being the serene companion to Parsons’ intonations that make the two in tandem work effortlessly. There is the expected slow love songs; beautiful though they are, anything new, they are not. But most exciting is both the upbeat, energetic numbers (see Ooh Las Vegas) and those that skirt that fine line between appeasing tradition and stoking that ‘progressive’ flame, especially Brass Buttons. This list brings many many Byrds albums and with them many of their offshoots. This one is unique in being a very welcome addition to represent country music.
Typical country fare. Perfectly listenable, not all that interesting.
I feel ya, man. Sorry your wife did you dirty with the album cover.
3.1 - Der Anfang ist schlimm, aber dann steigert sich das Album und rettet sich mit tollen Songs, sowohl ruhig als auch schwungvoll. Highlights: $1000 Wedding, Love Hurts, Ooh Las Vegas
This seemed really well-done, and if I were into this style of music (Country Western? idk what it's called exactly), I think this would be a great album. I enjoyed listening to it, especially the cover of Love Hurts, but the sound got kinda corny and annoying after a bit. Three stars.
Now this is the kind of country that I like! Emmylou Harris carried a lot of it though.. Favorite track: $1000 Wedding 3.5/5
5/10
It’s okay
Only 3 real standout tracks, but they are great.
So Emmylou Harris was relegated to a footnote in this album because Parsons’ wife didn’t appreciate their relationship, but this album, delivered right before he overdosed, feels both desperate and sad. It’s got that old-school country sound, but it’s full of heart and honesty. You can hear the pain and beauty of someone who was trying to reconcile his love of country, rock, and soul into something timeless. Historical note: Released posthumously in 1974, Grievous Angel became a cornerstone of the country-rock movement. Though it didn’t chart high at the time, its influence spread wide, shaping the sound of artists like the Eagles and paving the way for Americana decades later.
More fun than i was expecting. Can’t argue with his musicianship or songwriting. This is some very classic country-rock.
Ovo mi je isto fino sjelo nekako. Ništa posebno, ali nije ni loše, zlatna sredina. 3/5, 6/10
Music’s good. Didn’t stick out or blow me way. But pretty good all the way through.
2.8 2x, decent enough for country album
Calm and soothing country for an early morning drive. "Ooh Las Vegas" was a nice late album change of pace. Emmylou Harris!
Didn't really think much of it because I'm not too big on country ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
not the type of country id normally listen to but it was enjoyable.
3.5 stars. Father of country-rock, can tell his influence on future artists of the genre. Emmylou Harris works really well with him as his partner. Really pretty duet in "In My Hour of Darkness". Standout is "Ooh Las Vegas" which is upbeat and fun.
I really like this but man it can be depressing listening.
A lot of really good tracks on this album. The Emmylou Harris duets work so well. Brass Buttons is such a good tune.
More country then I usually listen to. Grew on me. Liked when Emmylou Harris showed up.
2,9/5
Good. Very country tinged but strong songs and well put together.
By no means bad, just not for me 3/5
Very folk/country, not something I would usually listen to but it’s more enjoyable than modern country songs in my opinion. I liked the instrumentals and scratch of his voice
I don't see it. Good for introducing the world to Emmylou Harris.
The harmonies with Emmylou Harris are beautiful. Unfortunately, not all the songs are as good. I really like the opening and closing track, as well as a couple of others. That leaves half the album with songs I don't care for.
It was fine. The melodies were pleasant to listen to, even though I'm not usually a fan of country (or country hybrids).
This was better than I expected. Not something I'd listen to often, but I enjoyed it today. Standout track: $1000 Wedding, Ooh Las Vegas
Not a bad album. I didn't know this singer but very easy listening country rock genre. A good album..
Decent country album. I like how he sounds together with Emmylou Harris.
I went in blind and it was not what I expected from the cover, but I liked it, the country vibes were great, although nothing special. Don't understand the cult status.
6/10 This is nicely put together and well delivered, maybe “nice” is as far as I can go. Route one country and country rock, so how much you like it depends on how much you like those. Anchored by the vocals of Parsons and Harris, they work so well together. Best: $1000 wedding
5/10
Unknown to me until I listened. Country! And rock! But mostly country. Good stuff and a good history if you read his bio.
Mostly enjoyable. The Love Hurts cover was interesting, and the Emmylou Harris song is pretty good, but it didn't blow me away.
Solid album particularly Emmylou Harris. Standout songs: Hearts on Fire Love Hurts
I'm not sure I'd describe this as country (as 1001 Albums seems to do), but solidly within the folk rock tradition of the time. With that said, the thing that makes it stand out from the other bands in that genre is the one thing that isn't in the name, Emmylou Harris. Otherwise, Gram Parson doesn't do much to distinguish himself from the pack on this one.
Twangy, but better than the crap that passes for country music today.
Great songs, great singing. Emmylou Harris’s voice is sent from heaven. Many songs on this album have been re-recorded and made famous by others. I think it’s more than meets the eye. But sometimes the sound borders on church camp — potentially grating, a little reminiscent of Donnie and Marie. I need to give this another listen. It’s a 3 for now.
3/5. It's not anything fantastic but it is a short and sweet album of some pretty solid soft and country tracks. There is an air of promise in these songs, a naivety of a brighter future despite the dark times. It makes that much more meaningful considering Gram passed away before this was released. Granted without Emmylou, this album would not be as good, as she does bring the much needed vocals to elevate this music. It was a nice listen, and I might grow to enjoy it, but as it stands it was a good listen. Best Song: Return of the Grievous Angel, Heart On Fire, Love Hurts, In My Hour Of Darkness
Somehow it feels possible for me to understand what distinguishes exceptional country albums from ordinary ones. To me, this is very very bland and not interesting at all. No song that stands out at all, and Gram sounds like the most generic country singer there is. Just don’t the see why this among all country albums deserves a spot on the list. Weak 3.
This album really grew on me. At first, it passed me by like a generic country album, but I gave it another shot and I’ve listened to it quite a few times since. The opening track is probably my favorite on the record. The backing vocals by Emmylou Harris are one of the album's highlights. Other than that, it’s a short and sweet country album. Too bad Gram Parsons died before he could make more music. I'm torn between a weak 4 or a strong 3, but I’m going with a strong 3. After a few re-listens, there aren’t that many tracks that stand out, but it’s still a nice country album. I'll probably listen to it again.
Country not bad! Sad story
Songs: Return of the Grievous Angel, Love Hurts, Medley Live from Northern Quebec
Nothing wrong with some twangy country music.
3.5 Another one that was often reference but I’d never gotten to hear. Surely had a good influence to better country/americana, and Emmy Lou Harris sounds phenomenal, but reminds me most of Jackson Browne and suffers a bit in that comparison. Favorites: “Cash on the Barrelhead”; “Love Hurts”; “Ooh Las Vegas”
Less rock and more country. I hear his influence in the band Pavement's music. Love Ooh Las Vegas.
Rating (1-5): ✩✩✩ Will I be listening to this again: Maybe What do I like about it: It-s country/swing which is something I like >w< What I dislike about it: I don't think it was Higlighted songs: Return of Grievous Angel, Hearts of Fire, Love Hurts, In My Hour of Darkness
Enjoyed.
3 - decent country rock
One more vote for EmmyLou Harris. "Love Hurts" is indeed a killer track. "I Can't Dance" is amusing. Gram Parsons (no relation to Alan Parsons?) writes compelling songs, just needs a little more... passion, I guess is the word. Some good stuff on here, nothing that really made me want to go back and listen again except for the two I mentioned. And interesting that the first album I've ever heard from Gram Parsons is also his last album. Another live fast die young guy, what is the issue? Too much pressure at too young an age?
I had seen this album cover around back in the day but never sat down and listened to it. I'd rate it as a decent way to start the morning. :-)
Emmylou Harris is the main draw for me on this one. The songwriting and Parsons' vocals are good too, but there's a part of me that dislikes it simply because I think it helped create the template for a lot of really corny country music that would come later.
Except the entertaining "I Can't Dance" and "Ooh Las Vegas" almost good old-fashioned country. Thanks to this list I surprisingly discovered the original version of "Love Hurts". But I still prefer the later "Nazareth"-version. Weak three stars. 2,5
Had never knowingly listened to him before. Recognized a few songs. Solid stuff.
Country is the USA's folk music - a little more strident, a little more industrialised and a little more melodramatic. This album does a great job of straddling that line and grounding the potential excesses of country with folky sensibilities, occasionally allowing Parsons' psychedelia to add another dimension in what is an enjoyably diverse record which always returns to its roots. Favourite tracks: Hearts on Fire, Brass Buttons
3/5 I think
I think it’s a 3 but not for me‽ like a 2.75 I might consider to play this again
Fun, but not catching me.
All cards on the table, I wasn't paying attention and threw myself into this album, thinking that Gram Parsons was part of progressive band Emerson, Lake & Palmer because I forgot the P was Palmer, not Parsons. I was very confused this was a straight country album instead of progressive rock, but once I righted myself, I enjoyed Grievous Angel. It was super mellow and had fun lyrics. Emmylou Harris' vocals were fantastic and brought a lot of flavor to each song. I had a great chuckle at the "Love Hurts" cover. Did this deserve to be on the list? Maybe, maybe not, but I didn't hate it.
3.33
I liked the faster paced songs. The slower ones just dragged. Ooh Las Vegas was pretty good.
Suena bien, como toda la música country pero nada que me interese seguir escuchando muchas veces mas.
Very average and forgettable
Some tasty country rock ditty’s with a mix of some really cool wordsmithin.’ Super fun to hear a young Emmylou Harris. Tracks can get a bit repetitive, but neat guitar and steel pedal work. Also, respect to Gram, fellow UFO admirer.
Not very exciting, but I appreciate the singing and guitaring quality
Pretty cool and quick
Strictly only really remember Love Hurts from Veronica mars. Fairly enjoyable album
Relaxing
The songs are solid and the performances are, too. Emmylou Harris' voice is a big part of what I find appealing on this one.
Wasn't really feeling this, much like the Flying Burrito Bros, but it ended with a few good tracks so I will award a low 3.
Not my style, but he seemed adept at the twangy country.
C’est le genre d’album difficile à détester, dur à adorer, c’est mollo pas mal égal partout, soft country à souhait. Shootout au Medley Live from Northern Quebec, première mention de la Belle Province dans cette liste
Not that bad
Country isn't something I actively listen to, it was quite a nice album overall, the harmonies were good.
Great country rock album that is easy to listen to.soothing voice and calm sounds makes it enjoyable. Recommended.
Falling asleep
I was reading Parsons bio and I can't believe he died so young. He had so much potential. It's not my type of music, but there were some songs that I did liked, one of them being "Love Hurts".
I would give it a 2 but for Emmy Lou Harris and the steel guitar playing. 2.5/5
It’s country rock with a little sparkle, but still firmly country. I didn’t hate it, and I can tell it’s solid. Just didn’t do much for me. Short runtime helped. The real standout is the story about the body theft after his death - wilder than anything on the record. Setting a coffin on fire in the desert is a hell of a way to go out. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Return of the Grievous Angel - Love Hurts - Ooh Las Vegas
Cowboy music
Back to back country albums for me. Too bad none have been stellar. New name and sound for me - pretty good. an OK listen #529
Nothing very exciting, but not bad at all
I didn't know anything about Gram Parsons. The vibe is country'ish rock, with slide guitar and such. I liked the intro song: Return of the Grievous Angel. I liked Emmylou Harris' harmonies on all the tracks she's in. I didn't in particular care for his cover of "Love Hurts" -- I prefer the Nazareth version.
Mainly appreciated this as an influence to other bands and artists like Uncle Tupelo, Wilco and Sturgil Simpson. Schmaltzy at times. But, I'm in a bit of a schmaltzy phase.
Interesting enough to give a second listen. Some fun and some sincere songs. 3.5
Better than I thought. 3+
Not bad. I liked it better than the Flying Burrito Brothers album from a a little earlier. I like Emmylou's accompaniment. Maybe 3.5*?
It's country music, which already has me rolling my eyes a bit, but it was decent for all that.
I’ve only listened to his greatest hits, which I loved. This album has two totally different vibes. It’s a honky tonk ripper and a sad ass country album. A lot of the hits I’ve heard covered by other people.
Aardig album. Sommige liedjes zijn wel geinig, maar ondere ook wel een beetje "zeurderig". ***
This was fairly pleasant country. A generic album with a sprinkling of stand out tracks. Not my bag but it passed without any objection
The gem of this album is Emmylou Harris and it sucks she didn't get the title recognition. Gram Parsons was definitely onto something with country in a more rock format. This doesn't quite get as close for me as, say, Wilco, but it's still a good listen. Might be 3.5 for me.
Inoffensive; a lot of it make me think like I was watching a 70s American movie.
Was not feeling the first half of this album (not a big country guy), but I felt like the Side 2 songs were all really good, particularly Love Hurts and Ooh Las Vegas. Brought it up to the low 3 territory.
Back to back country albums. I like the genre "Cosmic American Music". And shout out to our girl Emmylou Harris for featuring in this album. This whole album just made me want to grab my sweetie and hit the line dancing. Again, not my jam but still nice to listen to. Ooh Las Vegas was an absolute twang.
Weird I had just listened to Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country on the Roo lineup when this came up, and he apparently popularized Cosmic Country. I will say this is a little bit more country than rock n roll or anything cosmic. I do like Emmy Lou's vocals. She had an album on here not too long ago.
I kept expecting this to be something it wasn’t. My daughter cried a lot during it. She wasn’t a fan. I didn’t mind it.
mid to solid country with some standout tracks. bonus points for the crazy lore on this one with emmylou harris. #spyboy
6/10 Completely serviceable though no where near one of the best Country records in the canon. Greatly admire the layers and details of it all and it’s all quite nice, but it can get too buttery and resemble the most overly sanitized aspects of Country music at points. 🤠
Solid Parsons, although a little on the slower side. Like the addition of Emmylou. 3/5
This didn't really do much for me. Felt a bit generic. Not sure why it's on the list. The standout song is "Love Hurts" and even that song isn't that great.
Listened Before? N This was interesting and had some really good songs. Hearing a young Emmylou Harris was cool, and the fusion style was cool. I'll revisit this one. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Return of the Grievous Angel
Pretty solid for country rock which admittedly isn't my favorite. The lyrics approach cliche at points but do enough to stick out that it isn't a deal breaker for me.
Emmylou Harris is a national treasure! $1000 Wedding is really touching. The medley is fantastic. And that version of Love Hurts is amazing. I'm all in when the slide guitar is allowed to just jam. Overall, I'm half and half on this one.
I was not expecting country-twang.
Never listened and really enjoyed this
It was okay.
Not what I expected. Enjoyed!
Pretty good for the genre. Emmylou is great.
Some nice tunes
old country. I guess a forerunner
not my thing but ok
A pretty stripped back country production, with some help from Emmylou Harris on vocals. Not super memorable otherwise.
Gehört eindeutig zu den besseren Country Alben. Bereichert durch die Harris und eine fast perfekte Produktion zeigt sich hier dieses Genre von einer sehr niveauvollen Seite. Harmonisch und angenehm
Not my style, too intense and repetitive for me.
Perversely, this album had belatedly prompted me to recognise Emmylou Harris’ true worth
3.4
I suspect there was little country rock music when this album was created, although it is commonplace today. So this may have sounded new and different in 1974. This artist never made it commercially; perhaps if he didn't OD he eventually would have been successful. He certainly had lots of assistance from top songwriters snd singers. I liked some if the songs on this album, and would give it 3.5 stars if possible.
What on earth -- Emmylou Harris is this old!??!?! I thought she was like, 28. Maybe I mixed her up with the Vance Joy song 'Emmylou'. That's pretty bad if so. Well, this enterprise continues to be extremely educational. As for the main man: I had never heard of Gram Parsons before. More country. But sad duet country! (With Emmylou!) That's the pinnacle of the genre. However, pinnacle of the genre still gets a 3. Sorry. Highlights: '$1000 Wedding', 'Love Hurts' (another cover)
Not my fave
This was perfectly fine, but it didn't do anything for me at all.
nice old time country album with a bunch of classics
Huomattavan kaunista laulua; ihmeellisen luonteva hahmo. Sävellykset ovat ajoittain vähän mutkikkaita, minkä vuoksi esimerkiksi I Can't Dance erottuu raikkaudellaan, mutta kokonaisuus pelaa.
A little too country for my taste but set the stage for country rock artists like The Eagles.
country --- i don't like so much but there are some good tracks. Interesting story about the life of this character
Good old school country, no complaints at all. Good songwriting
2.5/5
A plaintive twanging cry from one of America's founding alt-country fathers, released posthumously (kids, don't do heroin). This was a very pretty call back to times when country wasn't about trucks and beers and jeans, also shone a major spotlight on Emmylou Harris. A nice listen.
Emmylou’s angelic voice is great and overall this is good fun and highly polished (“Brass Buttons” and “Hickory Wind” are particular highlights), but the claiming that was some “big-bang” invention of a genre feels a bit much, though clearly he expanded the boundaries. Plus, it feels slightly contrived (overall, rather than just the faux live cuts). His back story makes it hard to credit fully. And anyway GP is, straight-up, a superior collection of songs.
Unfortunately, his useless widow changed the cover and track listing, thus destroying the original concept of the album. Sad.
2-3
I recognize the name. This opening song is not what I expected 😂 I had a completely different sound associated with this name in my head. I need to look this guy up. Still not sure what’s happening here but this is a mix of Americana like I’ve never seen before.
Kinda music you would find at a run down bar in the country where beer costs $3. Not bad
A good album, I liked $1000 Wedding the most.
Posthumous album from one of the progenitors of "country-rock" (sounding way more country than rock, though). Emmylou Harris' vocals are to be heard everywhere, accompanying Gram's voice. Which is nice. Most highlights are to be found on side two on this one: There's the lively "Live Medley From Northern Quebec", a cover of the saccharine "Love Hurts" that's not exactly the one I would go to (apart from the Everly Brothers release, that would be the Roy Orbison version for me)... but I guess the song is properly covered at least. Then you have the cinematic, exhilarating and fun-as-hell "Ooh Las Vegas", followed by the touching closer "In My Hour Of Darkness". Not bad, but compared to the *GP* LP, or to Parson's accomplishments with The Flying Burrito Brothers, we're clearly a notch below in terms of overall quality. Parson's "Cosmic American Music" always risked coming off as a little mundane musically speaking, quite ironically given the name (a risk it shared with C&W, generally). And here it straddles that line a little further than on previous releases. Guess the fact it was a posthumous album helped rehabilitate it at some point down the line... Oh, you do have some stellar arrangements once in a while (the fiddle on opener "Return Of The Grievous Angels" ; the vibes on "Hearts On Fire"). But the chord progressions and the artistic intents are pretty predictable, even in the most effective cuts. The record is varied enough to wake you up from time to time. But never enough to give you decisive jolts of energy. Apart on "Ooh Las Vegas". I really like that one. But it's not enough to make me "keep" this otherwise nice record in my list. 3/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums 8/10 for more general purposes (5 + 3) Number of albums left to review: around forty, as I've gone over the 1000 line and this generator is including albums from all editions of the book Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 455 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 271 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 328 (including this one).
I didn’t hate this. But it didn’t really keep my attention for the most part.
So this album was part of the “long hair” mash up between country and rock that started in the early ‘70’s. Emmylou Harris and Gram’s vocals are just perfect. Makes one wonder what would have happened if he could have rode that huge wave of country rock for the rest of the 70’s.
smooth vocals of gram parsons, duets with young up and coming emmylou harris, this is a quality country rock album, start to finish. released posthumously after parsons’ fatal overdose in the tail end of 1973, this album has slower numbers as well as more upbeat songs all anchored by parsons and harris, whose voices work well together.
My first reaction is that this reminds me of a lot of the country-tinged oddities we saw in all those 90s pop/rock bands like the Gin Blossoms or Wallflowers (most favorably done by the Gin Blossoms with "Cheatin'").I really like this fusion, though this feels a little too pointed at it at times. The vocals are wonderful when Gram and Emmylou entwine around each other, though Gram occasionally falls flat on his own. On the whole, this left me wanting more.
Album 625 of 1001 Gram Parsons - Grievous Angel (1974) Rating : 2.75 / 5 It had its moments but just not really for me, overall. Emmylou Harris was nicely featured.
Not my thing but I can't argue with that first track. Emmylou Harris is a star here. I had the Burritos last week and I enjoyed this a lot more, I think as country rock took a back seat in favour of straight country, which I can tolerate much better. The Love Hurts version is fine but I prefer Nazareth. The more rinky dink Elvis Vegas band songs stay on the right side of rinky dink and are toe tappers. Will it be a low 3 or a high 2? Only tomorrow can decide.
2.5 rounded to a 3 It’s fine, some great songs, but I’m just totally removed from any context about what makes it worthy of being on this list.
Pretty chill, but I am getting tired of Emmylou Harris's voice. Also this guy was in the Byrds.
I enjoyed a few songs but for the most part this was kinda dull, I usually like this vibe of country tho
5/10 - No way they cover a different song on the 1001 albums. They could not find another album that did not cover a different albums song. Its also just generic country. Grievous angel as a name saved it from a 4/10
I've found that I tend to like country a lot more as a full album than I do when an individual song pops up while listening to a playlist. As an album this was probably a 4, but I'm gonna give it a 3 because I don't think I'll listen much in the future
Who knew Gram wrote such good music....oh I guess lots of people knew this.
Ok for country some good song but traditional
Good record.
I'm not familiar with Gram Parsons, but I have reviewed The Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo, and I thought it was fine. I've also reviewed two Emmylou Harris albums (and Trio), which I really enjoyed. I think I have a little bit of an idea as to what to expect from this album, and based on what I've read about, I'm excited to give it a listen. Overall, I thought this album was fine. I think the songwriting and Emmylou Harris's vocals were the best things about it, and it was pleasant enough to listen to, but this album wasn't really my speed. I understand the historical significance of this album as a cornerstone of country rock, but this album's sound just didn't land with me, and I wish I could pinpoint more specific reasons why. I'll reiterate that Emmylou Harris's singing is phenomenal, and I really loved her singing on the duet of "Love Hurts," which is infinitely better than the Nazareth version that seems to be more popular. As far as the songwriting goes, "$1000 Wedding," "In My Hour of Darkness," and "Brass Buttons" were all fantastic. The somber mood of those songs was really great, and I think Gram Parsons's premature death gave those songs some additional weight. Musically, this album was fine, and I thought there was some decent pedal steel guitar playing, but nothing really wowed me. While I consider this album worth my time to listen to once, I can't really see myself firing it up again.
This is fine. I'm probably missing some context about what makes it important. No plans to revisit this one. The version of Love Hurts here is nice enough at least.
# Album Name: Grievous Angel # Artist: Gram Parsons # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Couple of decent songs like las vegas and grievous angel but it never leaves the station. Its one constant level of country. Meh. Just OK. # Top Tunes: Grievous angel / Las vegas # Would I listen to it again? Nah.
Country is not really my genre.
Not sure what or who this is. A bit country, a bit not.
This 70’s country album comes on strong with Gram Parsons later cuts on the album making this a 3 star rating for me.
So, another country album in a mountain of country albums. I am very split on the genre as it seems to vary from downright irritating twangy twang to proper emotional exploration rooted in the experiences of real people. This album does both those things, but it doesn't do the latter to what I would see as a good standard. There are enjoyable moments and the vocal harmonies on songs like Love Hurts are pretty good. Some songs feel like they drag on, like Return of the Grievous Angel. Overall, Grievous Angel is just an average country album with a few brief standout moments.
I wasn't expecting this to be an old school country album. Return of the Grievous Angel is a good song. I Can't Dance has a nice guitar solo. Medley Live from Northern Quebec is also great, particularly the second song Hickory Wind. Nice Love Hurts cover.
Легкий мягкий кантри альбом для вечерней посиделки
A lot of albums that sound like this end up in the 'I don't mind it, ooh that part sounded nice...but would I voluntarily listen to this? Not sure'.
-wow I have suddenly been listening to a lot of country music because of this project thing… never thought I’d see the day -this is pretty good, Emmylou Harris was a nice touch for the most part. The second half was probably my favorite -Favorites are I Can’t Dance, $1000 Wedding, and Medley Live from Northern Quebec
Grew on me as album progressed
Emmy Lou Harris carried. Great harmonies and pretty cheerful, playful stuff. Nothing special, but done well and very comforting. Fav Songs: Return of the Grievous Angel, Love Hurts, Hearts on Fire, Ooh Las Vegas
Excellent album
Solid, classic country record. Some good tunes on this one that I connected with - "$1000 Wedding" and "Love Hurts." The album is a whole is a pleasant listen and really easy to enjoy. This 1001 project has certainly opened me up to the world of country that I previously was [adamantly] against. This is a record I'll come back to in the future.
solid classic folksy country stuff. Emmy Lou is the best part though.
Never heard of Gram Parsons before today but I quite enjoyed this album. Easy listening. Shame he died young and never reached the fame he could/should have had
Perfectly pleasant country music. I don't really care for Country, I have learned very much in this process. I can see it is pleasant and why people find it enjoyable it just rarely hits me. This didn't either. I was glad it was short
Yeah pretty good to be honest but still just generic country for me, but nice to have on.
I like the style but nothing particularly striking from this album. I guess it gained significance because of Gram’s death. Second half of the album from the live track onward much better than the start which was quite slow and by the numbers to me. 3.4/5
Strangely I’d never heard of this despite growing up with my mother’s late ‘60s/early ‘70s country LP collection. It sounded very generic country to me to the point of being a little tiresome. A low 3.
hits my upper limit of 70s slide guitar tolerance
A little too country for me but still lovely with some fun tracks
Was okay.
Ooohn nice. Emmylou Harris is one of my favorite country artists, glad she's on this project. I love 70's country. It's got such a nice timbre to it. I will say I've heard better 70's country albums tho. The first half doesn't quite have the hooks I would hope for. It's fun tho. $1000 Wedding is fantastic. And basically from there on it was on the up and up
Een beetje saai en braafjes. Mag wel wat meer pitVerder wel geowon prima americana plaat
Hyvää kantria, mutta ei oikeastaan mitenkään poikkeavaa. Ihan perus. Parhaat: Love Hurts
3.5
Meh. It's pretty good country, but it's still country. I do have a soft spot for male/female duets. So that helped.
A fun vibe, a little too country for me. Faves: I Can’t Dance, Ooh Las Vegas
Never heard this, enjoyednit
6/10
ok
Geen gigantische country fan, maar dees was wel oké. Ooh Las Vegas is wel echt een banger. Vreemd wel dat enkel bij dat nummer Emmylou Harris expliciet wordt vernoemd. 2.9
Very good
Gram and Emmylou put on one hell of a performance here. It's a shame that the album is posthumous for Gram, but certainly a collection of good music and a launching pad for Ms. Harris. The whole thing is a product of it's time
Country rock I dig it, me gusta los twists que pueden tener algunos artistas country y si me gustó este álbum pero no tanto como las versiones más pops o americana del country post 60s
Completely country which I didn’t mind although I wouldn’t class myself as a fan. 3*
Enjoyable old style country.
I thought the album was okay, but I did not pay too much attention to it. Gram Parsons and the female vocalist both have great voices. Standouts: Return of the Grievous Angel, Medley Live from Northern Quebec, and In My Hour of Darkness.
eh
This type of music is honestly not something I usually like however it sounded entrancing and peaceful. I don’t think it’s something I’d pick out of the bunch. It was relaxing to listen to.
Favourite part of this album: I enjoy the ombre on the cover - those blues and greens really look lovely and shade together nicely. A lot of progressions around I-IV-V-vi with a strong dose of pedal steel. It's all just not my cup of coffee, although I'm certain it's well-done and is a definite mood. I think I'd have enjoyed it more if Emmylou Harris took 75% of the leads instead. "Brass Buttons" gives me a little Glen Campbell vibe, ok I kind of like this one. I was about to give this a 2 - totally a personal rating of course, I'm sure some will take umbrage with it and if you like country this is probably awesome - but then I gave it a second spin and ... things clicked a little more. Even if it is just a bit plain for my tastes overall, that gentle mood is kind of the point and I think worthy of my non-country-lovin' ways to give an extra mark to. 6/10 3 stars.
Average, I didn't mind this. I would not say this is anything special, though.
6/10. I did like it, but nothing stood out to me as outstanding music. Added Ooh Las Vegas to the playlist.
Decent country music.
Quality and wholesome classic country album. Feels comforting to listen to.
Not keen on steel guitar country music. If you are a fan of the genre, this is top drawer material.
A lot of twang in this album. The stuff that starts to lean toward “Country Rock” is pretty good. Cool to hear the original “Love Hurts”. Mid 3
I like this! Songs blur together but I enjoy this sound a lot. Pretty pleasant 3.5
You can draw a straight line from this to tons of music I love today. But this is probably still too early of a version. It's close to hitting the mark but just misses for me. Still, it's solid.
The kinda songs that are very popular in places with loose familial relations law. Can't say I live in one of those.
The music was dull but the story was interesting. Can I forgive him for being in the Byrds? I would say.... no.
Emmylou Harris makes this album great. Shame she wasn't given as much recognition as she should have at the time. Reading more about it, seems like Emmylou was the only adult in the room.
I always struggle reviewing country albums. Objectively, this isn't bad music, but at the same time, several songs feel extremely sappy and remind me of everything I dislike about the genre. I did like this guy's version of 'Love Hurts' as well as the more uptempo 'I can't dance' and the ballad duet 'Hearts on fire'. The rest of the slower tracks were okay, but then came the last two tracks, which were the worst kind of generic country and an absolute drag to get through. 3 - 3.5 stars
This felt like good classic country rock. Very easy listening and fun. Made me feel good.
It blows my mind that Gram Parsons was never really considered “country.” This is “country rock.” I think it’s safe to say that all modern country would not exist if it weren’t for Gram Parsons. (Good and bad stuff.) I’ve always like Gram, and this alum was not exception. Super fun songs, good songwriting. It was kind of everything you want in a COUNTRY album.
Not really my cup of tea. Can’t see myself listening to this again
Enjoyable and smooth sounding country
clearly on this list because of "love hurts" - which is a good track but not enough to make the album stand out. 3 st
C&W is just not my genre. Other than the slide guitar and vocals by Emmylou this album didn't do much for me.
as vozes harmonizam muito bem. gostei das mais rockers. top3: i cant dance, love hurts, ooh las vegas
Mellow duet country classic rock. 5/10
Fine I guess
Just enough twang to not be too annoying. Pleasant country record.
Easy listen.
Songwriting isn't fully convincing, but there are some moments that click and show a depth of emotion. The harmonies are great. This album really wouldn't work without Emmylou Harris. Looking back I rated two solo albums of hers 4 stars each nearly 800 albums ago. The cover of Love Hurts was really bad. Ooh Las Vegas tries to put a rock spin on things, I'm not actually sure if it was a success or not - maybe with more inspired guitar work. All in all, just another country album. It does have some qualities, but not enough to be exciting in any way.
eiginlega of hreint köntrí fyrir minn smekk. en góð lög inn á milli. 3,5.
Not much to say. I liked when they both sang together IG
I’m slowly getting more into the country rock sound. This wasn’t a standout, but I say “good effort, lad “
It's one of the better country outings on this list
I know this is an important record in the evolution of music I very much enjoy listening to today. Unfortunately this still carries too much country for me to really enjoy.
Famous name with some famous songs. Worth a listen. Folksy Americana .
Favourite song - 1000 dollar wedding 2.5 stars
Not my cup of tea, but sounds sweet
The album is called a combination of country and rock, but I heard mostly country here. Not that there's anything wrong with it. It's a shame that Parsons died before this album could take him anywhere; there is a lot of interesting tracks. The harmonization with Emmylou Harris definitely stands out. The last track with Linda Ronstadt... you can tell it's obviously her. I'm interested in the tracks they culled from the album. I know it was mainly the wife's will, but still I am going to have to seek them out. I enjoyed it for what it was: a good , slightly quirky country album. Not something I will definitely go back to right away. Top tracks: "Love Hurts," "Medle Live From Northern Quebec"
Meh. Not a fan of Gram Parsons' voice and would've liked to hear more of Emmylou Harris' voice (not just harmonizing with his). Return of the Grievous Angel was a slow and uninteresting start, in my opinion. Hearts on Fire was okay and I didn't mind Love Hurts (but they sounded awful similar and I still prefer Nazareth's harder rock version of the latter). I Can't Dance and Ooh Las Vegas had some nice energy and the live recorded Cash on the Barrelhead / Hickory Wind was raucous - cool to hear. Not my cup of tea but 2 would seem harsh. Still, not sure what the big deal about this album is.
Better than I thought it would be and another example of why I enjoy the surprises on this list.
Top Three Songs: 1) Brass Buttons 2) In My Hour of Darkness 3) Love Hurts Bottom Three Songs: 1) $1000 Wedding 2) Cash on the Barrelhead / Hickory Wind (Live from Northern Quebec) 3) Hearts on Fire
This album cover is so dorky looking
An interesting country/rock hybrid.
Pretty smooth, happy to listen to it a couple of times
Love hurts is great cover, overall reasonably enjoyable.
A bit folky, a bit country, a bit corny, a bit fun. I kinda liked it.
Country isn't my favorite genre, but this isn't bad. Emmylou Harris adds a lot to it. I don't know if his weak voice could carry it by himself. I wouldn't mind hearing it again.
Buen disco.
It’s not the worst of its kind, but on the flip side I didn’t really find anything special about it either. It’s just a mediocre middle of the road album.
I've heard tales of the legendary pairing that is Gram and Emmylou, and was surprised to learn the story of Gram's widow having Emmylou's contributions to the album minimized. But she's all over this album, and their harmonies sound great. But beyond that...I'm sorry to say that I didn't love this one. Some fine country songs here, but the album felt a little long to me -- and at under 40 minutes, that's not a good sign. As someone who lives near the Northern Quebec border, though, it was cool to see the province referenced in a title (even if it wasn't *actually* recorded there).
- I am not overly fond of most country music, but nothing here bothered me. I found the slower tracks, such as "Brass Buttons" and "$1000 Wedding" to be more engaging than the faster ones. - I would not turn off this album. Neither would I ever seek it out again.
Great tunes and I love hearing Emmylou’s voice. The record just a bit too nice and smooth for me to go past three stars. I like a big of grit in my country.
Annoying at times... good at times.... hard to rate. It is very 'twangy' - which I really don't like much.... 3
Toch een beetje die cowboy country smaak
Not memorable but competent
interesting country sound with a lot of steel guitar and twang. I liked it.
Starts off with heavy country but someway through gets more towards rock kinda like chuck berry guitar solos. Favorite: Brass buttons, Love hurts, Ooh Las Vegas Least favorite: None 3.5/5
It’s a weird magic trick when country songs have titles like “Death Take Me Now” or “Horrid Depressed Existence” and then the song starts with this kinda-upbeat chipper twangy guitar thing. Anyhow, that happened three times on this album. Also, Emmylou Harris sounds great.
I enjoyed listening to the album. Not sure if I'd listen to it on repeat but definitely was worth a 1 time listen.
Wasn't loving this album, it was leaning way too country without the promised rock. But then the medley came on and his cover of Charlie Louvin's Hickory Wind, with Emmy Lou Harris won me over. One of my all-time favorite albums is a band called Idha's Melody Inn, where I first was introduced to that song. Was a solid 2 until that came on but that bumped it up a star. And if you haven't heard Idha - Melody Inn, go seek it out. You'll be glad you did. And then Love Hurts. OK, Side B of this album was way better than Side A.
Þetta var kántrí en samt ekki. Ég fílaði þetta alveg en samt ekki nægilega til að muna eftir plötunni þegar að því kemur að velja plötu á fóninn þannig að þessi mun gleymast þótt hún sé samt ekkert slæm
Liked the male female vocalizing on tracks that utilized it ….. the ballads were not noteworthy as Gram’s vocal weren’t distinctive enough to carry them …. Musically, the guitar work was pretty impressive without being overused ….
Gram Parson’s Grievous Angel is calm. Most of the songs are listenable, not good but can hit sometimes. HIs voice is pretty nice on all of the tracks. Also, the strings in the background really go well with the vibes of the album. However, it sees its downsides on a bit of a droopy undertone that arises when nothing really happens on the songs. Highlights include I Can’t Dance, Hearts On Fire, and Brass Buttons. All in all, Grievous Angel is a mid album. Best Song: Brass Buttons Worst Song: Love Hurts
Not a bad sound, but nothing particularly special here
A young Emmylou! Love Hurts! In general, its a little too saccharine for me but the vocal work is excellent.
Soft Gentle Soothing I know of Gram Parsons but I had never taken time out to listen to a whole album. Lovely
It was impossible for me to get one coherent listen of this album for some reason, so I don't really have any sense of the pacing or continuity. I heard every song, and there's lots of solid material. I know Gram Parsons is something of a legend among songwriters, and I liked what I liked, but I didn't finish the album with a sense of having heard something astounding. It may be due to the disjointed sessions, but I can't go higher than a 3 without a better sense of the album as a whole.
Some beautiful tunes on this album for sure. A little too country in tone and feel for my tastes as I prefer a little less steel guitar and fiddle and more mandolin. But I still appreciate the beautiful songs, just not as much as I could with different arrangements. 3.5 stars
country rock
A little twangy but not bad
Nice folk album
Fairly standard country to my ears
Pleasant enough, but not something I see coming back to all that often.
Enjoyed more than I thought I would. Emmy Lou needs more credit for this record than she gets
Eh, this is from the end of country that I don't care too much for, but I didn't find it particularly intolerable, just left me a bit cold. It definitely benefitted from all the Emmylou Harris. Fave tracks - like the "Medley..." track. Stand out was probably "Las Vegas" overall...
Pleasant album I loved the two live numbers they had fun liveliness in contrast to the rest. It was nice sounding album
Bland but not really bad music.
Sweet and inoffensive
Before meddling Brussels got involved he was called Ounce Parsons
Old school country, brought back a lot of memories
okuuu 6.5/10
#121 Decent enough country rock. I didn't really love it or hate it, I just acknowledged its existence and moved on. 3/5: that'll do, pig.
Good ol' country, not mad at it. Probably only getting a 3 because I just returned from northern AZ and romanticizing the ranch life with horses and trucks. Besides that, pretty meh. Like this better than modern pop country that gets more radio time nowadays, but who listens to radio anymore?? Not my first choice, and probably won't listen to it again by my own volition.
jukebox tunes I can hear elvis as an influence it's mellow, love hurts is familiar
A nice listen! I enjoyed a few of the songs. A very country vibe which can be quite hit or miss but this was more in the style I liked. Would listen again
3.5 I was just ranting three reviews ago about how this dude ruined The Byrds, and lo and behold, look who should show up on my doorstep again. Well, despite what I’ve said about the guy in the past, either a broken clock is right twice a day or Emmylou carried the guy on this album because it's surprisingly good. I didn’t want to admit it at first, but between Return of the Grievous Angel, I Can’t Dance, Ooh Las Vegas, and the cover of the Everly Brothers’ Love Hurts, I couldn’t help but find myself enjoying this, even making me question if the rendition of the latter was my new favorite version. Even the stuff in between those was still pretty decent though, and I appreciated that each song seemed to have a little bit more flair to it than the stuff I’ve heard previously from Parsons, like the xylophone on Hearts on Fire or the live-sounding Northern Quebec medley. The latter does contain Hickory Wind, a song I previously detested on Sweetheart of the Rodeo, and while it’s still probably my least favorite song here, how it’s incorporated bumped it up a little bit in my book. So yeah, far and away the best I’ve heard from Mr. Parsons, though I’d be lying if I said that Emmylou Harris’ involvement probably didn’t sway my opinion on it a touch. I’ve mentioned it before, but I’ve been a big fan of Emmylou’s voice ever since I got into Bright Eyes and discovered I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, so I’m sure the fondness that I have of her work with Conor there helped translate into an appreciation of what she does with Gram here (We Are Nowhere and It’s Now is one of the greatest songs ever in my books, and her involvement on the track is no small part of that). Obviously the woman is capable of standing on her own though (as Pieces of the Sky has shown us), and it’s a shame she was cut from being co-credited on this album with Gram and a space on the cover due to the dude’s jealous widow. Can you blame her though? Just listening to the two here feels like they have palpable chemistry. Third time’s the charm I guess - shoutout to Gram for finally commanding some musical respect out of me, and shoutout to his friends for perhaps the greatest corpse heist of all-time. Side note - I’ve seen this album cover before, and Gram’s image has always reminded me of the main dude from the Guitar Hero video games, Axel Steel. Does anyone else see it?
Easy listening country rock. Maybe the prototype for all easy listening country rock.
favourite song: Medley Live from Northern Québec this is the 4th gram parsons project ive had in 71 albums and im bored of it. was gonna be a 2 but a couple tracks towards the end saved it imo.
Emmylou was robbed. She’s ann amazing singer and shines through Gram’s heroin-addled performance.
3.5/5. Emmylou Harris is queen.
echli country aber nid öppis wommer speziell ufgfalle isch
han chli öppis anders erwartet aber au no nice
I would not listen to this whole album regularly, nor would I skip past a song if it came on the radio
Some occasional highlights, but nothing to keep my coming back with the exception of two songs.
70s Country - not bad but not massively into it either. Vibey here and there. 3/5.
This has some really beautiful moments, but probably didn’t click enough with me to be too memorable over time. Pretty crazy to have a whole Wikipedia article over your death, though.
It was pretty good!
I really just don't care for country.
Had some great tunes considering it's country!
Not bad, different to usual music but catchy country
I was like ooh one I've been meaning to listen to! And maybe that expectation led to underwhelm. All the better for Emmylou, but didn't enjoy as much as some other country albums. Also didn't enjoy reading about his death.
honky tonk blues. Emmylou Harris is great and also still not enough.
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Love hurts
Very nice one. Emmylou Harris sounds great. Gram Parsons was just a name to me before, this will be a re-listen for sure.
Fun country. I liked the guitar.
Solid easy listening. He and Emmylou Harris sound good together
