Interesting and felt like maybe a music theory major would love this. I found it enjoyable but not something I’d return to.
This is a transition album between Brian Eno’s earlier rock based work and his later ambient work. This album is all over the place. It starts with rock based post-punk but as the album progresses, transitions to more experimental music with hints of the electronic and ambient themes that would define his legacy. There are even shades of country music and symphonic pop throughout. Overall, this was an incredibly expansive album.
Eno just ain't my bag baby
Brian Eno is an artist I started exploring recently, and his discography is a bit intimidating. He has made a lot of music, and it all seems to be very dense. He's clearly an incredible talent, having produced music for some of my favorite acts, like Bowie and Talking Heads. However, I've found Eno's own music to be hit or miss. And I haven't yet come across an album that's easy to listen to. It demands engagement. Although not a personal favorite of mine, this album feels as prescient as any of his 70s albums. For example, it almost seems as if the song King's Lead Hat spawned Devo, who dropped their first album a year later. Based on the other albums I've heard from him, I'd say this is a weaker one, but apparently this is one of his classics. I feel like it would take me ten years of listening to his albums to have an informed opinion about his music.

Splish Splash I was raking in the cash. Might be one of the greatest lines of all time. Funny that science is mentioned in this title because this album felt a lot like Weird Science and that sort of 80's vibe, which looking at this as 77 seems a little ahead of its time.
Eno is always welcome on here. More singing tracks than I've come to expect from him, but as usual, it's a great album. This one has a bit of new wave flair to it, but still some of the ambient style that he's known for. I'm definitely a fan. Favorite tracks: Kurt's Rejoinder, King's Lead Hat, Julie With, By This River. Album art: Black and white headshot of, I have to assume, Mr. Eno? Normally wouldn't go for a black and white band/artist photo, but the washed out/high contrast effect here, paired with the angle and the off-center framing, makes it impactful. I quite like this. 4/5
I liked the peppy stuff. Not so much the slow stuff.
Starts weird, improves as it goes along
This was fun and Eno-ish. I dunno if I’d call anything in this album life-changing but I think it’s cool that the track King’s Lead Hat is a purposeful anagram of Talking Heads, who Eno was working closely with at the time.

First half is sorta artsy rock songs, second half is super chill vibe songs. Both good, but I preferred the slow half, despite not usually liking that kind of tempo in music.

Talking Heads + Bowie
Brilliant, first Brian Eno solo album Iv properly enjoyed not just appreciated. Added to my frequent rotation.
I knew of Brian Eno but wasn't too familiar. I can definitely see myself returning to this often
One last hurrah to the rock world before dissolving into a world of his own creation, Brian Eno lets the audience ricochet through worlds before and after science. Parts pensive, parts lurching, the seemingly early post-punk document stands tall yet alone in its aural being. Whatever one makes of his far more wide reaching (and rather definitive) ambient works later and before, one cannot deny that Before and After Science is the bridge that connects it all and that bridge, however final, still obtains joys and secrets waiting to be seen.
Awesome instrumentals (many a times even ambient) with nice vocals. Fav tracks :- 2) Backwater - idk what it is, but i like it. nice instrumentals 5) King's Lead Hat - Groovy daft punk-esque pop rock and electronica. 6) Here He Comes- Pretty guitar ballad. (similar to here comes the sun) 8) By This River - soothing sad piano song, rest all songs after this are ambient. I was suprised by how much I thoroughly enjoyed this album, and is a great piece from start to finish.

Låtarna fram till King's Lead Hat är decent men gör inte så mycket för mig. Fr.o.m. den sången blir denna skiva superb, och Julie With/By This River är bland de vackraste låtarna som finns.
A varied but largely enjoyable album which I went into with no preconceptions having not knowingly sought out Brian Eno before in the past. It's definitely of a time, but pleasant enough for repeated listens despite no song really grabbing my attention and compelling me to add to my favourites
Will come back to this album again, definitely a bitta me. "Backwater" gives we didn't start the fire vibes but much more bouncy feel.
Cool futuristic sound, made with hollow spacy beats and synthesized sounds. Can feel the Beatles and David Bowie influences in some of the more upbeat direct songs.
Well, I can say that I've liked every Brian Eno album that I've gotten so far on this list. This is probably my least favorite of those albums, since I like his ambient stuff much more than his rock stuff. This was really cool overall, though, and I think that I would have liked it more if I didn't have so many other great Eno albums to compare it to. There's definitely an interesting feel to the album, as you can hear bits and pieces that sound like the Talking Heads or the Cars or Devo 4/5

It started strong and just kept getting stronger, absolutely NAILING the landing. This was a delight, and the type of Eno record I was hoping to discover.
I do agree after listening to this that Eno is at a Zenith between his traditional sound and his Ambient experiments, and it sounds great.

Может, потому что был напряден из-за учебы. Так что 4 звезды альбом заслуживает.

I have a confession to make. I simply don't get Brian Eno, recording artist. And it bugs the shit out of me, since it appears I flat out love a ton of albums he either produced or was involved in. Maybe it's just the old "those who can, can/those who can't, teach" adage. Dude has a number of albums on this very list, and they do nothing for me. There are only certain moments that might as well be paint on a wall.
bass is killer
Man, this album really tapered off quickly for me. Not sure if I've ever gone from pretty decently interested to background noise so quickly before. Favorite track: Kurt's Rejoinder
The second half is really rather lovely. It just lifts you up and floats you away. By the end of the final lullaby I was completely relaxed. And it works surprising well with the daftness of the first half. Like you’re loosening up with jokes and a good old sing song first.

I wasn't surprised that a lot of this sounded more contemporary than it was. I was surprised that I enjoyed it so much. An interesting and compelling listen.
I was immediately drawn in and as I was finding the album losing its luster just a bit, it switched gears and kept me in.
Brian Eno surprises me yet again by being excellent. I quite liked the more upbeat first side of the album but it really shines in its soothing mellow second side. I felt great listening to it and want to listen again.
I usually find Brian Eno quite interesting - I loved his collaboration with David Byrne on My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts. This earlier album didn’t grab me quite as much but I liked it. This might be one that will warm to me over time…
Another fantastic art pop record by Eno. He's certainly matured a lot since Here Come the Warm Jets and Another Green World with masterful production techniques in repetitive (modeled after krautrock) yet beautiful melodies and a confident voice that can play many roles depending on the mood. Our first few songs are simple pop songs, but do what they do marvelously and in different ways. Those synths are multi-layered and gorgeous. Many tracks like "Kurt Rejoinder" and "King's Lead Hat" show the influence Eno would have on David Byrne's music. This quickly changes as we get into dark ambience with "Energy Fools the Magician". It's a bit out-of-place before the high-energy "King's Lead Hat" but serves as a nice break and forecasts what's to come. The whole second side carries on this calmer moodier vibe reminiscent of his ambient works, but confined to short (non-traditional) pop structures. "Here He Comes" serves an amazing blend between the two styles, still very accessible and loud but peaceful. The last four tracks tone down the volume into sparse bright arrangements. It's probably his most consistent album excluding that small misplacement (that serves a better purpose though). The pieces aren't as shocking or memorable as Another Green World, but I'd still this is more proof that cements him as of the greatest producers.
So this is midpoint if it was only 1001 long (I know it’s not). Maybe I’m feeling fatigue or maybe not but I feel on a run of ok but not great records.
It wasn't bad... TBH, I kind of expected it to not be all that great, but it grew on me. The first few songs or so were just OK, but the more ambient nature of the final few songs were quite nice to listen to. As if there was a bit of an evolution/growth in his sound and style. The ambient songs seemed a bit ahead of their time, which takes the rating from a 3 to a 4.

Can an artist have more than one essential album? Is essential not really the same as favorite? My favorite Eno album is "Here Come the Warm Jets," but this one is pretty great too.
Better than I thought it would be.
Didn't mind the music, though 80's is not my fav sound. His voice is not to my taste. It contrasts in a not good way with the melody.

From the first song, it sounds like a Talking Heads b side , and quite a good one, but from there the album turns a bit darker. I can see the brilliance in the sound scapes, but the album isnt to my musical tastes

A better Eno effort than the last few I’ve received - gets quite spry on uptempo tracks like ‘Lead Hat,’ wish we could see more of that Eno on the list than the ambient snoozers of late.
When I first pulled up today's album, I was not enthusiastic about it. I had a Brian Eno record last week (Here Come the Warm Jets) and it was absolute garbage. No redeeming qualities at all. From that, I drew the assumption that this would be the same. I was wrong. Although not my favorite album of all time, at least this one had basic song structure, and a musical direction. I actually didn't suffer listening to this album. Honestly, when the album started with the weird song No One Receiving, I thought I was doomed, but that was immediately followed by Backwater, which is a basic art rock song. The whole record kind of then settled into that art rock/psychadelica genre with the odd weird song scattered throughout. I don't mind an odd song here and there throughout an album, but when the whole thing is fucked, I just can't take it. A few songs (moreso on side 2) were completely instrumental, and kind of fit together into a sort of mini epic (the last 3 songs on the record). Overall, an experimental album, but one more strongly rooted in traditional musical themes. For that I am thankful. Nothing jaw dropping, but a fairly average album. Favourite songs: King's Lead Hat, Backwater Least favourite songs: No One Receiving, Kurt's Rejoinder 3/5
What am I supposed to make of this
This wasn't bad, but why did I need to hear this before I died? His best work is not his solo work... this seems like a forceful way of presenting a musical savant to casual listeners who might not otherwise know him. Will use as study music in the future, so bonus points for that!

I'd prefer MGMT's Brian Eno ten times in a row over this, but that's not saying much.
Starts off sounding like Eno took the Station To Station tapes and added his vocal! I really thought I’d accidentally put on Stay! No problems copying his Bowie work, pity his vocals are not as exciting. Second half is into Eno’s ambient project - a but dull for my taste. A low three since two would be extremely harsh given the musicality.
I've only ever known Brian Eno from his later ambient/experimental work, so it was interesting listening to this earlier album where you can just feel he was *right* on the cusp of moving from a more rock/structured style to his more avant-garde future material. While I definitely prefer his ambient stuff to come, this album was pretty interesting. I probably won't listen to many of them again, but there were definitely a few highlights I didn't expect.
Quirky music that my brain quickly decided was background music, and the album slid by while I thought about other things. Not bad, just not particularly good. Smack bang on a 3/5.

Sometimes, I will willingly accept that Eno is an absolute genius. And sometimes, which I fully accept is a less popular opinion, he is a tedious bastard.
Solid eno album. Most of this is just great eno magic, but man by this river is one of his best songs, possibly even one of the best pop songs of all time. Side note, insane collaborations on this thing, check them out.
This was a pleasant surprise! Eno creates very interesting records. And this one has a great atmosphere. Electronic synths engulf and mesmerise you on each track. Singing and songwriting is not his strong suit, but musically he creates some very cool works! 7,5 out of 10
Everyone knows Brian Eno's music. Some have listened to the windows 95 song thousands of times. Do I get to rate that now? Or is this only for this album? Ugh. So tough. Some good tunes here. But most are less engaging.
Was surprised. It's definitely got an experimental electronica vibe, but it's never too experimental to lose sight of also being entertaining. I like Backwater the most, but even subtle pieces like Energy Fools and Here He Comes work really well. Both interesting and enjoyable.

One can't blame Brian Eno for failing to explore different worlds of music. That said, this particular exploit is rather boring.
"Before and After Science" is the fifth solo studio album by British musician Brian Eno. Art rock, art pop and experimental pop. Yep. Eno collaborated with a bunch of musicians from the UK and Germany (Fred Frith-Henry Cow, Phil Manzanera-Roxy Music, Phil Collins, Paul Rudoplh-Hawkwind and members from Can, Soft Machine, Fairport Convention, Free and Cluster). Eno wrote over 100 songs for the album in a two year period settling on ten. The album is noted for its pop and rock side one and ambient and pastoral side two. It was his last foray into rock as a solo artist in the 70's as that ambient side two took over. "No One Receiving" begins the album with guitar; it's funky with great percussion and polyrhythmns by none other than Phil Collins. I can see the direction Eno would direct The Talking Heads in the next few years. Isolation. Space travel. Technology. "Backwater is more upbeat. Danceable. Horns. Eno rapping to an extent. The highlightlight of "Kurt's Rejoiner" is the analogue delay bass used by Hawkwind's Paul Rudolph. Synthesizers. Mystery. Intrigue. The only single and really rock song is "King's Lead Hat." It's an anagram for Talking Heads. Look that up. An ode to new wave. Cool synth. I think science vs.non-science and nature vs. Science. "Here He Comes" kicks off the ambient side. This is softer, slower and pop. It's has nice vocals. About a boy floating thought the sky trying to get to a different time. "Spider and I" ends the album in a dreamy, atmospheric and very ambient way. Church organs. Another song about a boy and the sky. This time he's dreaming about being carried away by a ship. I liked this album quite a bit, both sides. The polyrhythmnns, the creativity, the atmosphere. The music fits the lyrics with the first rock and pop side towards understanding science (before) and the second ambient side towards going away from science (after). I'd say this is my favorite Eno album but I like his first three albums as well. All worth a listen and owning.
Thanks to my uncle, who was/are ahead of his time, I was fortunate enough to hear this either when it came out in '77 or soon thereafter. It's a masterpiece and after so many years, you can hear its (and Eno's) incredible influence on generations after. Thanks, Carter!
I’m more familiar with Eno the producer than the artist. But from this listen you can absolutely hear the incredible producing talent in his own work. A lot of Talking Heads, a lot of Bowie, and it is all great.
Good album, was expecting a full on Ambient album but there are some good rock tunes on it.
never knew how much of an influence Eno was on Mogwai. there's a couple of tracks on here that sound so much like mogwai, or should i say that mogwai have tracks that sound a hell of a lot like Eno. i think i prefer this eno to the pure ambience stuff he later got in to.
Anyone who knows me knows that I like my music like I like my women - primitive, raw and black. Brian Eno displays none of those traits on this abysmal record that left my dick limper than a baby with cerebral palsy trying to wallpaper a crack den. Not on my watch.

Oooh excited to see this on the list of what I've missed in a week away from this. I guess this is an earlier Eno before he got super ambient. I love that it's quite jazzy and also already giving hints of that very relaxing plonky more ambient sound. Really enjoying Kurt's Rejoinder too, that bass is lovely and bouncy. Wish I had more time to delve into the lyrics and back story and context of this album but alas it's a very busy time so I'm just glad to be getting to listen and review this lovely album. Not my all time fave Eno but a fun listen!!

Most of this sounds like it could have been on a Roxy Music album but the last 3 songs sound like what I expect from Brian Eno. Both styles were great.
One of my favorites so far. The avant-garde rock of the first few songs is great, with ‘Backwater’ and ‘King’s Lead Hat’, which sound similar to The Beatles and Talking Heads, respectively. I love the more ambient stuff, specifically - well, everything, but ‘Julie With’ is my favorite. This album brilliantly shows Eno’s genius and I’m excited for the 4 other albums from him.

My jaw literally dropped hearing “by this river” listening to the album at first I was like I wish there was a feature that showed what other music this influenced but I heard it from never falling down. Pretty awesome
Not my jam. I didn't find it interesting and the songs didn't stuck with me. This is my second Brian Eno album and it's the same as the other one which is just alright, nothing more.
I know Eno is this prolific musical genius who has innovated more in one day than most musicians could ever hope to throughout their entire career. But… I just don’t really enjoy this. There’s some pop rock sounds here that could be cool in the right setting. I just don’t care for it. Meh.
Not sure what I was expecting from this, but I was not grippered immediately.. I think it's a bit out there for the sake of being out there. A strutting catwalk of musical showboating.

I was wasn't expecting much, as I know some of Eno's work is challenging to listen to, so I was pleasantly surprised it wasn't bad. Sounds similar to bands he was producing around this time, Talking Heads, Bowie (not surprising) and his music is somewhat interesting without sounding commercial (also not surprising). A solid listen, but not for all tastes.

Read his name a lot in discussions on 1001 album topics, but I have no personal knowledge. No One Receiving - Music is really interesting; lyrics ok; vocals are unique. I'm not hatin' it. 6/10 Backwater - I like the music; lyrics average; vocals ok. 6/10 Kurt's Rejoinder - Digging the really interesting music; lyrics are likely deeper that I care to research; same vocals, I guess this is their sound. 6/10 Energy Fools the Magician - Instrumental piece with a cool sound. 7/10 King's Lead Hat - Music upbeat with punk sound; I have no idea what the lyrics mean; vocals same. It feels a bit disconnected from the other songs. As a punk song though, it gets an 8/10. Here He Comes - Music feels like 60s folk; lyrics are average; vocals are still cool enough. 8/10 Julie With - Music is really good, kinda a Pink Floyd vibe mixed with "Twin Pines" theme; lyrics aren't clear if they are speaking in metaphors; vocals really match the music. So far my favorite from the album. 9/10 By This River - Musically another good vibe; lyrically ok; vocals very mellow and pleasant. All together it works very nicely. 9/10 Through Hollow Lands - An instrumental that I'm enjoying very much. It's kinda ethereal, a little like floating through space. Solid 9/10 Spider & I - Music is really pretty; the minimal lyrics are truly unclear; vocals are . It's a very chill vibe that I can dig! 9/10 Unique experience that gradually improved with each track. I'll revisit some of the later tracks. A very chill album!

A cacophony of sounds, textures, moods and feelings. Quite abstract which doesn’t work all the time but there are some moments of quality that shine. Can definitely hear Talking Heads, Devo, David Bowie and Trent Reznor in this album. King Lead’s Hat and Spider and I are highlights.

I always love about half of most Eno albums. Kings Lead Hat is a great stomp, and the touches of Young Americans and his interest in Talking Heads and the US new wave scene generally work well here. It's the quirkier English eccentric stuff that I find slightly less convincing. Although I am sure those ideas got recycled later on and worked better after a tryout here. Eno is a genius in my book, but his song-based albums are always a mix of miss and hit for me.
Eno always interests me. You're always going to get something interesting from him. It's not always what you want, but he's not afraid to experiment. This is really dreamy in places, without straying into hippy shit territory. Here He Comes is gorgeous.

This is the fourth!! Brian Eno album on this list and the other three I heavily criticized and disliked. I did not enjoy the experimental nature of his music. I was a bit pessimistic going in to listening to another of his albums, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much more I enjoyed this one. I think with another listen or two, I would possibly even upgrade this to a 4/5. This one was much better, Brian Eno.
1st half: Talking Heads-esque. Low-key and groovy. 2nd half: Super ambient and strange, Twin Peaks-sounding production. Pretty good stuff. I know Brian Eno mostly from his Ambient projects, which are some of my favourite (and Roxy Music of course). This album was a refreshing change from the other versions of Eno. It felt very experimental, while still maintaining an enjoyable listening quality that I would definitely go back to and explore further. Nothing particularly stood out to me to elevate this album above the pack, but I still enjoyed the listen. Fav Tracks: Backwater, King's Lead Hat, Julie With
It lost me in the first half but the second half was such a switch up and ended up turning it around. I loved the gorgeous and haunting instrumentals in the last few songs! 7/10

I did not enjoy this. I can't really say way, except that it annoyed me.
The first six tracks - regualar 70s style songs - are kind of garbage, but tracks 7 -10 with their dreamlike, ambient vibe are actually quite good and reminded me why Brian Eno is still relevant even today. Sadly these songs are in the minority here, since most of the album is still below average due to the first couple of songs. 2/5
second half is much better than the first half. right now its a 7 but feel like it will grow on me.
I enjoyed that, and anybody who can incorporate "not a sausage to do" into their lyrics is going to be a winner with me

Eno, particularly his solo stuff, is a bit of a blind spot for me. This is his last record before he went fully ambient. And it's really good. More fun than I anticipated and some moments of beauty. Best song is Here He Comes.

The first side is similar to something like talking heads, while the second side is more slowed down, for me at least. The instrumentation is done very well and just allows you to be in the moment. Favorite track on this album is Backwater for me.

i didn't expect this many fun songs because the first song i heard from this was "by this river" and also considering that the next album he would make after this was "ambient 1". that was a pleasant surprise though, as my favorite songs are probably on the more post-punky, groovy first side. the ambient-leaning tracks are gorgeous though.
Based on my distaste for Roxy Music thusfar, I didn't think I was going to like this at all, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised. I definitely can see myself revisiting this one at some future date. It had a unique je ne sais quoi. Standouts: No One Receiving, King's Lead Hat, Here He Comes, By This River

Eno! Ooh what to do? Not a sausage to do. Bags of fun, and so much inventiveness, I love it. By This River is gloriously beautiful. Spider and I is also gorgeous, extremely reminiscent of his work on Bowie's Low in the same year. I maybe don't love this album as consistently as Warm Jets or Another Green World but I still love it. All of Eno's albums in the 70s are fabulous.

Got a layered beach boys vibe, surprisingly textured and complex. Great great bass, even though his voice is kinda weak.
This is one of those albums in this list I would never have listened to without it. I think it's also one of those albums that if I'd found at a certain time in my life I'd know it really well. Love the fretless bass, enjoy the discordant bits and amused by Phil Collins playing drums.
I love the 4 "song" albums he made in the 70s. This is the last of the 4 and contains beautiful textures and contrasts that hold together as a whole. Thoughtful brilliant stuff. 4

Eno is an artist I _SHOULD_ be more familiar with. I only really know him as the producer for Talking Heads and a few others, as well as a collaborator for certain key albums. Vocals remind me a good deal of David Byrne's, especially "King's Lead Hat." But I am sure that was what he was going for, so... The instrumentation is interesting, I have to wonder what made him choose any grouping for each song. To go even further, I wonder how he chose what songs made the cut. Wikipedia said he had over one hundred tracks to choose from. I have to wonder why each of these ten made the cut. Furthermore, there's an imbalance of the sides. Side one is a good 4 minutes shorter than side 2. He could have easily put another song in there, bt chose not to. I wonder why. As for the tracks themselves, there is a range, but with Eno's voice being a bit limited, the songs started to sound very much the same. That's never good. Still, I dug it, and it's definitely something I want to give more time to.
Odd or ironic to get Eno one album after getting Bowie's Low. I don't view it as trailblazing as Bowie, but it is certainly as eclectic, which is par for the course for Brian Eno. So I don't totally understand why it was selected of all the things he's done, or weird but cool stuff people did in the 70's. But I liked it. Side one was a lot of fun (my favorite might be Backwater), as was Here He Comes on side two - perfect follow-up to the catchy King's Lead Hat that ended side one. The rest of side two sounded like the background music in Minecraft during daytime sequences (played a lot of it with my kids) - especially By This River. Is that why it has so many listens on Spotify? But sure, I can get behind that ambient approach. It reminds me of some more recent stuff done by artists like The Neverending White Lights - eclectic but cool, maybe Eno was their inspiration. I'm sure this album is not for the average person but I kind of dug it.
There are too many things that I love about this album to put into this review, so I’ll focus on just a few. First, there’s the separation of moods between the two sides. Side one overall is more pop-driven and upbeat, while side two (beginning with “Here he Comes” for you CD people) is almost a mix of Eno’s ambient side with his vocal side. One thing that isn’t brought up as much as it should be is Eno the lyricist. His lyrics, rather than being about something concrete, usually paints an image to go along with the music. The absurdity of “Backwater” and the futuristic images in “No One Receiving “ matches the music in such a way that makes you wonder what came first in the writing process. This album has the sense of being more crafted rather than written. Eno himself stated how much of a bad musician he was, technically speaking, to the point where he had to label the keys at times in order to play the right notes. He does have the producer’s gift of having a good ear and a good sense of what fits into a track, however. Another easy 5 stars here!
While Eno was involved with so many acts I enjoy (Bowie, Talking Heads, U2, Fripp, so many more), it took me a while to appreciate his solo work. This is definitely one of his best, although I know he's an acquired taste. Favorite tracks - King's Lead Hat (anagram for Talking Heads - nice how Eno even sings like David Byrne on this track. The lyrics are absurd but sound great, like "All I know and all I have is time and time and tide is on my side." Great track), No One Receiving (sounds like it would be right at home on a David Bowie album - great bass and drums on this track, Percy Jones on bass (Brand X and a great session player) and Phil Collins on drums - the guy who wrote the review for this in the 1001 albums book was like "Phil Collins?" This song is a great reminder of how good a drummer Phil Collins was, especially in the 70s), and the trio of Here He Comes, Julie With..., and By This River (these tracks just take you floating away). I don't know if I would have said this 25 years ago, but these days Eno's song-based solo albums are all an easy 5 for me.
Brian Eno fills the A side with nervous funk, rock, new wave and art pop to switch completely in style and then fill the B-side with ambient songs. And even though I keep coming back to this album, I never really jived with this album, but I've switched in my preference over time. It's now the B Side that I appreciate much more than the A side. The A Side is a good idea where Brian Eno and David Byrne would take The Talking Heads later. Fun sidenote: King's Lead Hat is an anagram of said Talking Heads. I'll say 3,5*

Two Eno projects in a row, what are the odds! Not my favorite Eno (or Eno-adjacent) outing. It's a little too mainstream and "normal" for me. He is at his best when he is at his most quirky, and I love all his ambient albums. As usual, I think this gets credit for sounding like the 80s in 1977. Considering the somewhat mediocre albums I've had this week, I think this gets another bump for just not being more of that.

I love Brian Eno, but I’ve never loved his vocals. That’s how I feel about most of this album.the one standout is “By this River” which is quite beautiful and suits Eno’s voice perfectly.

We know what Brian Eno does now, it either really appeals or it just sits there as you go about your day doing other stuff. And that's fine, to have a floor where it's not annoyingly bad is a pretty hard thing to do, but let's not pretend Before And After Science and other stuff is transcendent or really and truly enjoyable. It just is, it's 2/5 or 3/5 depending on the day you're having and I think this gets to a 3, just. Maybe a 2 tomorrow.
This is quite odd, but I actually quite like it. Really janky changes in styles. Backwater is a bizarre song, but weirdly catchy, there's an instrumental, Here He Comes sounds like it could be off a Jarvis solo album, and the sound of By This River is great. Not a worldbeater, not coherent, but a pleasant enough listen and I'll go back to several of the songs. 3/5.

10/10 I’ve heard one of Brian Eno’s albums before but I had no idea he’s made more than just awesome ambient all the cool prog and electronic is so nice I mean come on, the man worked with Robert Fripp! I have to love him! anyway, I obviously love this album I see no reason to give this anything other than a 10/10

ENO is the aficionado of ambient music and has produced some great albums. This one, however, does not make me want to do anything: sing or dance, laugh or cry or ever listen to it again. It is the soundtrack to inertia. Like an innocuous film score, this is perfect background music, especially if you’re doing homework, writing code or changing your cat’s litter tray. I really don’t need more elevator Muzak in my life. I want music to incite emotion or make me want to do anything other than catch flies with my open mouth.
I like this album but not very familiar with it. I can hear his influence on David Bowie, Robert Fripp, David Byrne, and Peter Gabriel... and vice versa. I'm more familiar with Brian as a producer and never got into his ambiance music. I love his creativity but lose interest with his excessive repetition (same issue with Robert Fripp). I'll need to listen to this album a few more times to get everything out of it but will rate it as average for the time being.
Is Brian Eno the first artist to fool around with sonic landscapes? I don’t know. Do I enjoy sonic landscapes? Sometimes. I’m glad I got to listen to this album twice. It was OK the first time, but I appreciated it more the second time. I don’t often have the luxury of listening to our daily album more than once, which I think is a shame because, unless something really strikes chord, I am more likely to give it a lower rating. Julie With and Down by the River we’re my favorite songs on this record.
This was a decent effort, nothing particularly interesting or exceptional, nothing specifically unlikeable. But I kept asking myself, "why this album on the list?" What's special about this? We'll get plenty from Eno as a producer before we're done, why include this album of his music?
I've always enjoyed this album but have never loved it. There's not a song I dislike, though I find them all a tad cold and the production a wee bit thin. Also, I don't care for how the album is broken up into a groovier side and a mellow side, though, when this came out and it was only available on vinyl, I can see the appeal of putting on whichever side you're in the mood for. But in the digital age, not so much. Still, Eno creates great sounds and he has a real gift for catchy melodies, and his lyrics paint lovely pictures. It's a 3.5 for me.

Pleasant surprise! Knew the name but otherwise Brian Eno was a gap in my musical knowledge. I missed listening to this album the day it came to me and put off doing a makeup listen because I thought I wouldn't like it. But I was wrong! King's lead hat is vaguely familiar but otherwise all songs were new to me. The vibe on the album shifts from beginning to end but I enjoyed the transition. Favorite song was By This River. Simple but the melody sticks with you.

I'm more familiar with Eno based on reputation than his actual work (apart from his stint with Roxy Music), so my only expectations here were simple: this album was going to be weird. It was indeed weird. Didn't love it; didn't hate it. Probably an album I'll want to revisit again at some point.

It's pretty good. It feels a bit trapped between Talking Heads new wave, and Eno's later ambient music, and consequently doesn't really reach the heights of either style imo. Still fairly catchy, enjoyable, and tranquil towards the end. My key criteria of an album creating or transporting you to a place is kind of met, as Eno mentions it's an ocean album, which I can dig. 1/11/22
Like a lot of his records, it starts out playful and upbeat, and then drifts into contemplativeness and melancholy, with a few tracks seeming to aim for outright inertia or dead air. The latter half is more effective. "Here He Comes" is one's fave and decent enough but as a whole this falls short, largely because it seems a tale of two sides, neither of which excel. The new-wave/indie rock feel, however Talking Heads-esque, is unconvincing (no singer Eno) and there was much better ambient to come. Thus, the effect is more experimental than effective. Still, it's Eno so 3 stars minimum.

Brian Eno is like a contemporary art museum for music. People say it’s good but when you’re experiencing it, it seems so different and bad that you’re not sure what people are taking about. There is a lot of elements in this album and I’d say some of it was ok but some was just weird. Not really my thing. 4.4/10

This is certainly way better than “Here Come the Warm Jets.” A fair number of these tunes are catchy and fun- my wife was dancing along to “Kings Lead Hat”, which could easily be a Talking Heads song. Overall though I think this is a pretty mediocre CD. Most of the songs stay in a single groove the whole time, which gets stale. There’s some funny noises employed, but overall it lacks depth and complexity throughout. It’s also pretty slow, especially the 2nd half, which for dance music is really very slow and sad. I also don’t love Eno’s voice- although it sounds like he might be joking half the time, I’m never sure when he’s being serious.

Perhaps it was influential, or perhaps it was derivative. I don't really have the desire to figure out which. What I can say is that the album, while not particularly bad in any way, doesn't really interest me all that much. The production is impressive throughout, and I definitely catch glimpses and connections to musical themes that I enjoy, in songs like 'King's Lead Hat', 'Here He Comes', and 'By This River'. Not sure I'll be coming back to this one though.

I like Eno's ambient music, but the vocal tracks are just dross. Like listening to Station to station (my least favourite Bowie album) without the advantage of actually having Bowie on it. The instrumental elements have strong echoes of Low - I assume this album is from the same period. Overall, it's just a pile of nothing at all...
I first became aware of this album (and Eno) through the movie Dogs In Space. One of the people in the chaotic share house the film is based around would put this on as whenever he took a lady up to his room, much to the disgust of his fellow housemates. While I am not ready to admit if I used this album as the soundtrack of any of my adolescent fumblings, I did have a tape of this that I was played until warping on my yellow walkman
I thought it would be more ambient like his other albums, but the first few songs were actually listenable. Might try this again.

13th September 2022 Listened during the day while working from home. Ben and Nilisha stayed and we went to the oak. I loved this, it’s atmospheric and moody but playful at the same time with tinges of David Byrne.
81/100: Wow, what a unique sound on this album. My biggest gripe with this project so far is that, by virtue of the sheer number of albums, trends are pretty quickly identified. “Oh this artist sounds like a Kirkland Bob Dylan.” “These guys sound like a raw Led Zeppelin.” Things of that nature. I wish I could get my mind to stop making these comparisons—it’s true, comparison is the thief of joy. Brian Eno’s sound, though, puts my mind at ease on this front. His music defies comparison. I haven’t heard an album like this maybe ever (the closest I can think of is the Talking Heads but that’s such an off comparison, it doesn’t really work). I’d never heard anything by Brian Eno before listening to this album; in fact, I’d never even heard of Brian Eno before. But I liked this album so much, I think it constitutes the first true gem of an album that I’ll revisit and an artist I will hopefully dive into more in the future. This is the type of music you drift into, where if you close your eyes you quickly forget the orientation of the room you’re in, you forget how long you’ve been listening, you enter into a world of sound and melodies. I don’t know what this type of music is made of, I couldn’t tell you what features a song has to have to elicit that experience, but I know it when I hear it. Brian Eno has produced that type of music and fostered that experience with this album.

As a general rule the ambient sections were killer and the upbeat sections were.. not my cup of tea. Definitely a middle of the road album for me, not one I'll be going to again save a few songs, but not an offensive album to my ears by any stretch.
Not one of his strongest albums for me, pleasant listen but slightly too much going on for background working, not strong enough on the tunes for attention grabbing.

It's undeniably an excellent album with great songs. The bass and synthesizer tones and playing are masterpieces on their own. Even if it's a pop record, I also like that the ambient music side of Eno stands out, like on the tracks "Through Hollow Lands" or "Spider And I".

7/30/2022 - ALBUM #184 Today's Album: "Before And After Science" by Brian Eno - The first exposure I had to Brian Eno was through a collaboration he had done with Talking Head’s front-man, David Byrne, which was a strange collection of loops that although very funky and danceable, served little in terms of variety. Learning later that Eno was responsible for the production of many of the Talking Heads projects I have been made familiar with, I was excited to what he would sound like on his own project. I have to say, it’s about what you would expect from the producer of the Talking Heads. Similarly to how Allen Parson’s Project parallels the sound of Pink Floyd, I think Brian Eno’s music takes all of the quirky-ness of his work with the Talking Heads, but gives the sound the ability to shine outside of Byrne’s avant-garde songwriting style. The track Kurt’s Rejoinder is a really fun example of this, with this super expressive growling bassline backing a relatively tame tune with some crazy fast hand-drum over top. This track also shows off how much fun Eno has with the sound of this record; everything just has this bounciness to it that comes together to give a rather ominous tune a really urgent and fun tone to it. It also feels like Eno has a sort of knack for psychedelia and the sound strange design that comes with it, so his music ends up having much more of an explorative feel to it than the rambunctious groovy-ness of a Talking Heads project: see Energy Fools The Magician. There are still a ton of moments where the sound of this projects mirrors that of the Talking Heads (or even Devo) like with the song King’s Lead Hat, but there is still a clear difference in the way Brian Eno writes a chorus that seems to ground these strange sounds in a more consistent listening realm. Maybe I am just not a fan of the avant-gardism's of the Talking Heads, but it’s refreshing to have strange sounding music like this be so easy to digest. Overall, this is a really fun album both instrumentally and in terms of songwriting and serves as a great window into the mind that produced some of the strangest albums of the late 70s and early 80s. Give this one a listen if you enjoy the Talking Heads. I was expecting weird and wacky but actually it was very listenable and I enjoyed it. Not quite a 4* but certainly high 3*
I found out later in the afternoon having listened to this album all day that my computer had some audio issues leading to cracking, popping, etc. It probably says a fair bit about what I think of Eno that I thought this was deliberate. Despite that I persisted so it must have been OK.

There’s something impressive going on here. Not really my bag though.
this album was so just pretty. it was calming and enlightening. it was somewhat bland but it was good and simple but complex.
My 4th (!) Brian Eno record; considering the fact that aside from "Music For Airports" prior to this 1001 list I don't think I'd never put an Eno record on front to back - I would have thought I'd be annoyed... I feel like this album puts 70s Genesis and Pink Floyd in a cake pan, mixed it just a touch more, and came out with something even better (and I love those bands). Also you can hear a clear path to/from Eno and Adrian Belew and Talking Heads. It appears that I've become a big Eno fan, and this is perhaps my favourite. It's weird yet somehow accessible. Blessedly short at 40 minutes (not a sarcastic knock at all; I much prefer shorter albums as a general rule - get in, get out, leave 'em wanting more), there's a ton of melody, the vocals are mixed low enough so they're not a distraction and more of an instrument - exactly how I prefer it. "Here He Comes" and "Julie With..." might be my current favourite tracks - the former seems simple and light but there's a subtle oddness to it and the latter is on the surface very mellow but it's almost off-putting in a way that draws me to it. I could see how the latter part might bore some listeners - it definitely gets very dreamlike/new age-y but it's just short enough for me to be the perfect amount combined with the pop-rock first half. 8/10 4 stars.

This is a lot of fun. Eno in highly playful mood, very lyrically nimble. There's a lot of the future sound of post punk in here, needly guitar and burbling synths to the fore. Very Talking Heads in places too - you can see where Brian's discussions with David Byrne would lead right here.
I didn't know to Brian Eno but it's not the music I like.
Some of the albums that originated in the 1970s seem like they're born from a struggle to find direction. Brian Eno has, undoubtedly, created some amazing work both solo and in collaboration with others. Some of that greatness shows through here, and in total, the album doesn't listen as a comprehensive or complete work.
Ooh this is really good. Some of the funkiness of My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, some of the rawness of Here Come The Warm Jets and some of the mellowness of the Ambient stuff. It's a really nice blend of all the stuff I'd go to Eno for.

In listening to songs like Kurt’s Rejoinder you get a good sense of the impact that he had on David Byrne’s solo albums. King’s Lead Hat sounds like it belongs on Fear of Music, which came out 3 years later! No One Receiving and Energy Fools could have been out-takes from side 2 of Heroes or Low. After listening to this I get a better sense of how Eno influenced the sounds of other artists, though as an album, it seems a bit disjointed to me.
I recently watched and enjoyed the very lengthy and detailed documentary Brian Eno- The man who fell to earth 1971-1977. So I was happy to see this album which was produced at the end of this period before the branched out with his solo ambient works which are a completely different kettle of fish. I think the last three albums that he produced in this period, which includes Taking Tiger Mountain and Another Green World are amongst his very best. Eno's stature in the business is apparent simply by how many crack musicians he was able to gather together on this record: Fripp, Frith, Roedelius, Moebius, Jaki Leibezeit, Conny Plank, Phil Manzanera... Wow! Side 1 of this record rocks out more, and Side 2 is more languid and pastoral and foreshadows the ambient themes that was to come. The highlight for me is By This River, which is so simple, yet one of the most beautiful songs ever written. The Satie-esque piano and his gentle humming typically stays in my head days after listening to it.
Not a lot going on here for me. Well produced.
I do like how dreamy this gets towards the end. Funnily enough 1/1 is still my top played track over the last 12 months.

A playful album, maybe even tricky. Reminds me of Bowie, Talking Heads, that sort of thing, which is obvious. Highlights: King's Lead Hat, Here He Comes, Julie With, Through Hollow Lands, Spider and I. This might be my favorite recommendation of this whole project.
This was ... okay. Didn't knock my socks off, didn't make me all that interested in a repeat playing. I do like a lot of Eno's later music when he voyages off into ambient soundscapes. This... was not that.

Really, really cool. There's some great songs on here (King's Lead Hat and By This River were my favorites) I enjoyed this a lot and I think it could hit 5 star status for me with repeat listens, which it will certainly get. 4 for now but that's a strong 4. A 4 that works out or...something.
Überhaupt nicht so unerträglich, wie ich befürchtet hatte. Ich gebe einer Platte mit Brian Eno-Beteiligung 3 Sterne. Hätte ich nicht für möglich gehalten. Schlechte 3 Sterne allerdings.
