Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Sounds a couple of years newer than it is. This man is very creative. Some parts are really good, some are pretty bad. I don't think he cares what I think. Favorite song: Kurt's rejoinder
No thanks. Generic basic boring album.
I accidentally had the first song on loop for half an hour because I had "loop everything" on and thought I turned it off but I clicked it one extra time and it switched to "loop song". The album is not too bad, okay for background music but no real essence to the songs, so slightly meh. The ending of "Energy Fools the Magician" sounds a lot like what older movies had as intense music whenever someone was sneaking into a very well-protected area - either a quay with explosives that can blow up the whole of Florida, or a yacht where the key to the biggest safe is stored but everyone is asleep apart from guards with guns outside. Music just went bam bam and the singing people would just make sounds over there but because this is a British band that wanted to just shout things, you can't really understand anything.
There were moments for me but overall no. 2
Very boring overall
Kinda dorky
Not really sure how I feel about this album. On one hand, it has a quality that makes it hard to describe, very genre-pushing/avant-garde which tracks for Eno. And while I respect that from a musical perspective, I just can't get past the songs almost sounding too pretentious and self-insisting. A lot of it didn't land for me personally. Interesting listen, probably not one I'm coming back to. Top tracks: King's Lead Hat, By This River
1970's experimental schlock. The kind of unlistenable music that's fun to make and that critics love.
man this shit is ass
Very forgettable imo
On the first track, within the first 30 seconds, I thought the music sounded good and well produced. Then, oh Dear, the vocals kicked in and it went downhill from there. Backwater - joke of a song. Listened to the rest of the tracks - nothing of interest. It's not a truly "awful" album. It's one step up... which gives it 2 stars from me.
A few good songs and a few bad
I was really dreading this because of the last Eno album we had to listen to, but this one had actual songs. It was tolerable, although not particularly enjoyable.
This does nothing for me, some songs are a little annoying actually.
The first couple songs were recognizable and kinda fun, but the rest of the album fizzled a bit. Interesting, but not super fun to listen to.
I enjoyed the music, but I can't get over the vocals. The echo or whatever it is over his voice is just too off putting for me.
This was fucking weird. What a weirdo.
Not a fan
Puh.
I may just associate Brian Eno with more instrumentals/collabs at this point but this album didn't do much for me. Felt more of a mix of the Roxy Music era and, while some tracks (here he comes, through hollow lands, by this river and spirder and I) have beautiful tunes/instrumentation, I found the album overall as a lot of random ideas that didn't gel together too much. Very odd as "Another Green World" is fairly similar but each core song on that record hit better for me. I'd say for the back half it is worth a listen for the fans but otherwise nothing really stands out compared to the other albums from Brian on this list.
Did not enjoy this album
I listened twice but nothing on this album stuck with me.
Not much for me on this album.
Yuck
Sorry, more annoyed than impressed. I know it's Brian Eno... I just can't.
I listened to the first few tracks. I know he gets a lot of respect but it all sounded a bit pretentious to me.
Probably should have stuck with Roxy Music, Brian.
Relaxte muziek en heel vreemde zang. **
Not at all what I expected. More talking heads than the Brian eno I am familiar with. Either way, didn’t do it for me
Nope
4.5/10
I have ambivalent feelings on this album (and Brian Eno in general). I want to like it, but nothing really grabbed me.
Not much to say about this one.
felt weird but not in a good way. not my thing
Straight to sleep.
Bored after 2 tracks.
Ambient Electronica in its infancy... no lyrics to speak of, but they weren't the point, it was all atmosphere. Can't say I "enjoyed" listening, it was more like background music you hear in a movie. Definitely set Eno up for his ability to create an interesting sound, hence his success as a producer. For me, it was more historical than musical value.
Yeah. Brian Eno, man. He really needs to stick to producing and stay away from trying to write pop music. This was just bad. The lyrics were dumb, the music disjointed, and the whole vibe was clunky. When Eno stuck to what he was good at - intricate, layered electronic soundscapes - it approached listenable. But it always descended back into "I wanna be a singer songwriter" territory which is a bad scene for Eno.
Art rock/pop that was hard for me to get into. Can appreciate Eno's contributions to advancing music, but this in particular was a bit of a snoozer.
this is not my music!
Started okay, and weird, ended just sad.
Blech
I love so much of Brian Eno's work. But I don't love this. At all. I know this is considered one of his most important works, but I just can't get into it. It's jagged and anxiety inducing.
When Brian Eno is producing an album, it tends to be a fantastic album. When Brian Eno makes his own music it just sounds pretty boring.
King's Lead Hat By This River Spider And I
Not a record I would rush to listen to again.
Didn't vibe with it that much
Some interesting combinations of sounds but his song writing and singing leaves something to be desired. Feels experimental
Mostly boring but some neat piano at times.
Couple ok ones, mostly junk
Eno just ain't my bag baby
Seichter Rock. Hintergrundmusik.
I have a confession to make. I simply don't get Brian Eno, recording artist. And it bugs the shit out of me, since it appears I flat out love a ton of albums he either produced or was involved in. Maybe it's just the old "those who can, can/those who can't, teach" adage. Dude has a number of albums on this very list, and they do nothing for me. There are only certain moments that might as well be paint on a wall.
Man, this album really tapered off quickly for me. Not sure if I've ever gone from pretty decently interested to background noise so quickly before. Favorite track: Kurt's Rejoinder
Not a fan
Completely unremarkable
What am I supposed to make of this
This wasn't bad, but why did I need to hear this before I died? His best work is not his solo work... this seems like a forceful way of presenting a musical savant to casual listeners who might not otherwise know him. Will use as study music in the future, so bonus points for that!
C No One Receiving - 2 Backwater - 3 Kurt’s Rejoinder - 2 Energy Fools the Magician - 2 King’s Lead Hat - 2 Here He Comes - 2 Julie With… - 2 By This River - 2 Through Hollow Lands (For Harold Budd) - 3 Spider and I - 2 Really boring. I'd prefer MGMT's Brian Eno ten times in a row over this, but that's not saying much.
I've only ever known Brian Eno from his later ambient/experimental work, so it was interesting listening to this earlier album where you can just feel he was *right* on the cusp of moving from a more rock/structured style to his more avant-garde future material. While I definitely prefer his ambient stuff to come, this album was pretty interesting. I probably won't listen to many of them again, but there were definitely a few highlights I didn't expect.
Sometimes, I will willingly accept that Eno is an absolute genius. And sometimes, which I fully accept is a less popular opinion, he is a tedious bastard.
This album went from Talking Heads-esque to his ambient album sounds, and I wasn't a fan of how all the mellowness was stacked towards the end. It made me not want to finish the album
Pretty dull - in a way worse than his other albums which are weird and bad. It's like he tried to make a "normal" album, but just made a boring one.
One can't blame Brian Eno for failing to explore different worlds of music. That said, this particular exploit is rather boring.
It was alright, some of it I have put in my 'study music' playlist because I feel like that's the vibe
A perfect example of why Brian Eno is best known as a producer. The tracks have interesting compositions and nice melodies, but his singing voice sounds like a koala on qualudes. 🐨🐨
It's mostly a bore
I did not enjoy this. I can't really say way, except that it annoyed me.
The first six tracks - regualar 70s style songs - are kind of garbage, but tracks 7 -10 with their dreamlike, ambient vibe are actually quite good and reminded me why Brian Eno is still relevant even today. Sadly these songs are in the minority here, since most of the album is still below average due to the first couple of songs. 2/5
boring
i dont like it but not so bad. im close to rage quitting this. 2 stars or 1. at least there are long instrumental parts.
Ok album nothing amazing
ENO is the aficionado of ambient music and has produced some great albums. This one, however, does not make me want to do anything: sing or dance, laugh or cry or ever listen to it again. It is the soundtrack to inertia. Like an innocuous film score, this is perfect background music, especially if you’re doing homework, writing code or changing your cat’s litter tray. I really don’t need more elevator Muzak in my life. I want music to incite emotion or make me want to do anything other than catch flies with my open mouth.
This was a decent effort, nothing particularly interesting or exceptional, nothing specifically unlikeable. But I kept asking myself, "why this album on the list?" What's special about this? We'll get plenty from Eno as a producer before we're done, why include this album of his music?
After 10 minutes I don't remember a lot from this album. Can't be a good sign.
I don’t think I’ll remember a single sound from this album a week from now.
A bit to horing
Weird but can't say I didn't expect that. Cpl of good songs though
Brian Eno is like a contemporary art museum for music. People say it’s good but when you’re experiencing it, it seems so different and bad that you’re not sure what people are taking about. There is a lot of elements in this album and I’d say some of it was ok but some was just weird. Not really my thing. 4.4/10
1-2
This is certainly way better than “Here Come the Warm Jets.” A fair number of these tunes are catchy and fun- my wife was dancing along to “Kings Lead Hat”, which could easily be a Talking Heads song. Overall though I think this is a pretty mediocre CD. Most of the songs stay in a single groove the whole time, which gets stale. There’s some funny noises employed, but overall it lacks depth and complexity throughout. It’s also pretty slow, especially the 2nd half, which for dance music is really very slow and sad. I also don’t love Eno’s voice- although it sounds like he might be joking half the time, I’m never sure when he’s being serious.
Perhaps it was influential, or perhaps it was derivative. I don't really have the desire to figure out which. What I can say is that the album, while not particularly bad in any way, doesn't really interest me all that much. The production is impressive throughout, and I definitely catch glimpses and connections to musical themes that I enjoy, in songs like 'King's Lead Hat', 'Here He Comes', and 'By This River'. Not sure I'll be coming back to this one though.
I like Eno's ambient music, but the vocal tracks are just dross. Like listening to Station to station (my least favourite Bowie album) without the advantage of actually having Bowie on it. The instrumental elements have strong echoes of Low - I assume this album is from the same period. Overall, it's just a pile of nothing at all...
It's a bit uninteresting
I find Eno's experimentation interesting in small doses. a full album is a bit much.
I really wanted to like this more than I did...Did not like Here He Comes, but quite liked Energy Fools The Magician and King's Lead Hat, and back when you flipped an album the tonal change might have been more expected, or less abrupt...but it feels uneven all in a row like this...
I didn't know to Brian Eno but it's not the music I like.
Some of the albums that originated in the 1970s seem like they're born from a struggle to find direction. Brian Eno has, undoubtedly, created some amazing work both solo and in collaboration with others. Some of that greatness shows through here, and in total, the album doesn't listen as a comprehensive or complete work.
Listened to on 4/26/22 2.5/5 Favorite song: Julie With This album was a bit too techno (?) for my liking but the lyrics were beautiful
Unnecessarily weird album
I do not dig it
People gonna be mad at me but I found it a little boring
This was ... okay. Didn't knock my socks off, didn't make me all that interested in a repeat playing. I do like a lot of Eno's later music when he voyages off into ambient soundscapes. This... was not that.
ugh. i want to like this. but i do not.
Particolare, mi ricorda Elton John. Man mano si perde. Dimenticabile.
This guy is responsible for the Windows 95 startup sound. Wild. 2.75.
Before and after Science by Brian Eno (1977) The listener’s initial impression might well be a weary regret that these songs were not sung by David Bowie. Eno’s voice doesn’t cut it, even on the atonal “Talking Heads” goofiness in the verses of the anagrammatical “King’s Lead Hat”. In terms of lyrics and ‘message’, well, to say that he strains for a rhyme would be an insult to poetry. For Eno the lyricist, rhyme is just one more instrument among the many on this album that viciously compete for the listener’s attention. And it almost always loses. The best not-great lyric in the collection is the song “Julie With…”, which almost tells a moving story, but I would like to have heard more about the “open blouse”, which is, after all, what “Julie” is “With”. (I actually hope that these remarks have piqued the reader’s interest enough to give it a listen.) The electro/folk/country/rock ballad “Here He Comes” seems to pack every musical cliché into the groove—the only thing it’s missing is sense. My thought as it concluded was “And there he goes!” Now there are some nice musical touches, chiefly in the areas of percussion and bass lines, recorded superbly (for 1977). But the subpar vocals and lyrics are just too damn distracting. Some of the synth effects sound positively primitive from a distance of 45 years. The two instrumental tracks (“Energy Fools the Magician” and “Through Hollow Lands” are very nice to listen to, even if there is nothing dazzling in the performances. The closing track “Spider and I” sounds like Enya on quaaludes. I’ve remarked elsewhere that Brian Eno should have stuck to producing. Nothing on this record changes that assessment. One thing I’ll say for this album—Eno, who designed the cover, knows better than Apple Music, Wikipedia, and the editors of 1001 Albums that one should not capitalize the preposition “after” in the title. Bravo. 2/5
I really do not enjoy the vocals on this... The production is OK. The song writing is pretty good. There's not much else to say. "By This River" might be my favourite track
Something new and different
Not my jam really. There’s one Brian Eno song I know I like, maybe there are more. Not here though.
This is not the Brian Eno I listen to. I was expecting a sort of Dan Caine / Hans Zimmer mix.
This album had moments of interesting elements, but left the feeling of having been waylaid. Perhaps it would work as background music, but otherwise it would seem that without any previous context, this being an introduction to Brian Eno is rather dull.
Not his best, but not a bad album
2/5 naaah
An unremarkable album. There is no need to listen to it
tbh,,, this was kinda boring kings lead hat was the only memorable song
3.5
favorite songs: Backwater & King's Lead Hat. was alright but the last four songs were very boring and made the album a little worse.
Was surprised by this. Last couple of tracks were more what I expected.
It’s not really my vibe but ‘Backwater’ was a fun and upbeat kind of track.
Started with a lot of promise and then it got into dreamscape/heroin trip territory
Just not very enjoyable
Interesting, quite experimental. Really not my kind of thing but can tell maybe Bowie and other visionaries were doing a similar thing to this. 2/5 just because it's not my jam
Jättekonstig men gick ändå att lyssna på. 2/5
Was pretty meh to me, though I liked King's Lead Hat
not sure about this one not my cup of tea but nothing glaringly bad about it either
Not for me really.
So ducking tired of these synthpop albums… they all sound the same.
Just too much.
Was expecting nice background ambience, wasn't that at all. Not really my thing.
meh
Meh
2 - Music to lose chess games to
Zzzzzzzzzz....
it’s... different. i like it. i don’t love it though.
I did like the first track for some reason, but not much use for the rest of it. I played it twice while working and it was not distinctive enough to keep my attention.
Intéressant
Here he comes - otherwise not the best
No comments at all. Just plain old dumb.

I've never really listened to Brian Eno before. Now I have I don't think I'm likely to again. Quite diverse, and not particularly memorable.
Jesus. Just when this list has been on a role for a while, they throw me the 183th Brian Eno album. Had to save this one for a few days as I wasn't in a tolerant mood. Anyway, now I'm in the thick of it. This goofiness really makes me think it wasn't a bad think this guy just started making ambient elevator music afterwards. At least you can tune that out. The first song isn't bad. The rest is mostly either cheesy, goofy or ambiance type elevator tracks. 1/5
Pish!!! Who sits and listens to this and thinks “yes, what an album”? In the bin
Yet another album that is absolutely awful. And another album I’m wondering WHY is this in this list? Why must I listen to this before I die 💀☠️
Just because something is avant garde doesn’t make it interesting. You can accept going into it that it’s not going to be easy or enjoyable, but it doesn’t resonate either.
Horrible
I don't normally skip my way through albums, but I had to on this one.
To know that Eno was making Ambient Music for Airports, and his Berlin records for Bowie at the same time as this album, this feels a bit disappointing. The more structured pop songs on the first half are a bit boring and Enos voice is uninteresting. The more ambient leaning stuff in the second half is a bit more interesting but it's just gentle and sappy rather than the immersive ambient bliss of the albums to come after this. Not my bag today.
Before and After Science by Brian Eno is a bit of an odd one. It’s the kind of album that’s very easy to have on in the background, and while it’s undeniably well put together, I came away feeling like there’s nothing particularly wrong with it… but also not much that really stands out or pulls you back in for another listen. It has that typical Eno feel, drifting between art rock and more ambient, atmospheric moments. You can appreciate the textures and the production, and there’s clearly a lot of thought behind it, but it never quite clicks into something memorable. It feels more like a mood piece than an album full of songs you’d actively go back to. Given how many Brian Eno records appear on this list, I’m not convinced this one was essential. It’s fine for what it is, but it doesn’t leave much of a lasting impression compared to some of his other work. Favourite tracks: “Spider and I” is a decent closer and probably the one that stood out the most Least favourite tracks: There are quite a few long, slow instrumentals that drift by without really going anywhere and make parts of the album feel a bit dull Album artwork: Fairly standard cover, nothing particularly striking
Sounds heavily influenced by the Talking Heads. I don't much like Talking Heads. A bit of a chore to get through. So very boring.
The hell?
Crap
I absolutely hate this, I think it's complete shit. Sounds like novelty music. Would be funny if it wasn't so annoying.
Honestly pretty weird and annoying. Not for me.
This guy needs to stick to making ambient music
Was ist dend sas?
buns
talking heads without any fun
so whats the reason its on this list
Odd tingling
Brian, eh, no. To be fair, there are some extremely clever lyrics here. Clearly a bright guy. Also to be fair, and this is basically always true, I only made it through a handful of tracks.
This is super terrible
Pretty awful
An album that sounds like all the worst parts of a pink Floyd song. Experimental songs that I didn't vibe w
Idk why but i can’t get into any of the brian eno you’ve suggested
I am not an Enophile
Half way thru didnt like

Music to sleep to
Not interested, didn't make it past the 2nd track
I didn't get very far into this one before I had a visceral impulse to bail. Consider this a shot from the hip

I've never understood the appeal of Brian Eno

So so boring. 1 or 2 of the tracks are listenable.
Fuck rating albums. Just let me listen.
The singers voice doesn't work for me at all. The music behind is was good but I just couldn't get in to a single song.
soooo boring 2/10
"Energy fools the magician" is cool. The rest no me gusta mucho
unlistenable
Not great
Not my thing
Song: Kings lead hat this song is good I've never heard of it though but i guess it is good a lot of lyrics though Song: By this river this song is sad i do not really like it but i guess it is good it makes me sad though not a lot of lyrics because it is going slow but i guess it is fine :) Song: Spider and i there are not even a lot of lyrics and this one is sad I also do not really like these songs
I do not like this album because it is boring. It is nothing special I feel like there are many other albums that sound like this one.
I don't like this song because the beat is not good. I would not recommend this song I don't like this song because it is too sad. I would not recommend this song. I don't like this song because the beat is not good. I would not recommend this song
Brian Eno can fuck off
Hat mich nicht abgeholt
Not quite.
Bollix
I hear this record comes with a suicide kit, which includes a warm bath, candles, and razor blades. Awful.
not for me
What if a man was very drunk and had access to every instrument on gods green earth and just rolled around on the floor and wrote lyrics using a bag of Scrabble tiles. Absolute waffle.

I dont hate brian eno, but this album just isnt great. It drags on and on and never has a high or low point. Its like listening to static or a truck engine. 1/5

Had a hard time getting into this one, unfortunately not great.
STANDOUTS: not a highlight to be had OVERALL: 1.5/5

Shit
spider and I was fine, but i don't really see myself coming back to this at all. it was... pretty meh overall.
Was one Brian Eno album not enough? Seriously, who decided to stick two of these on here? Goodness. This gets 1 star just for being wildly unnecessary.
Up it's own arse, complete load of shite. I made it to track 4. Me and my mates wanted to start a band back in the early 80's as young teens, we had one 'jam session' where we all played an instruemnt we had borrowed or bought - but had no musical skill or experience with. I'd bet good money we still sounded better than this album.
Meh
Yeah I get it. He's made a weird experimental album and we're meant to ignore the vocals because it's music made in the name of art. I just can't sorry. All the processing in the world can't hide poor 'singing'
Not a sausage to do?? Wtaf is he talking about? Eno was one of those dudes held in mystic awe. Knew him more for production and remixs and shiz. What a disapointment to listen to his bunch of arse.
Sounds quite dated.
2/10

I just don’t get this at all.
Absolute nonsense
Didn’t like this
¿Eno, como la sal de frutas?
Couldn't listen all the way through. Just noise. 1/5
Spacy woowoo music
I ALREADY RATED THIS YOU IDIOTS
From the first song, it sounds like a Talking Heads b side , and quite a good one, but from there the album turns a bit darker. I can see the brilliance in the sound scapes, but the album isnt to my musical tastes
Anyone who knows me knows that I like my music like I like my women - primitive, raw and black. Brian Eno displays none of those traits on this abysmal record that left my dick limper than a baby with cerebral palsy trying to wallpaper a crack den. Not on my watch.
Wow, um, this is really bad. I hated everything about this. I'm sure there are some people who love this, but they aren't me.
I don't like it that much, it's a bit misch masch at times 🤔
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Niente di interessante
"Arty". Got boring. Either too much "stuff" in a song, or nothing drives the song.
What the fuck is this shit
Albums like this are why punk happened.

Nothing much to say other than “nope, not for me.”
I mean I guess that Brian's a pioneer for electronic music and all but his stuff is just always weird. At least this album was better than Music For Airports. 3/10.
Really not my cup of tea at all. This just sounded like noise. Is it experimental? Just boring and messy to me.
Good for him, following his dream
Really didn’t enjoy this at all
Couldnt get through this one, it was just meaningless. Glad he started producing!!! 1 star

It had some nice moments but overall I didn't feel like there was any flow from song to song. A lot of the songs seemed to go nowhere. I respect his work but it's not for me.
Not what I was expecting from "Brian Eno" -- I've never heard him before, but know of his work with U2. Unimpressed after 2 songs.
"friends" has a spooky background and i love it!!
