Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Splish Splash I was raking in the cash. Might be one of the greatest lines of all time. Funny that science is mentioned in this title because this album felt a lot like Weird Science and that sort of 80's vibe, which looking at this as 77 seems a little ahead of its time.
I liked the peppy stuff. Not so much the slow stuff.
This was fun and Eno-ish. I dunno if I’d call anything in this album life-changing but I think it’s cool that the track King’s Lead Hat is a purposeful anagram of Talking Heads, who Eno was working closely with at the time.
I knew of Brian Eno but wasn't too familiar. I can definitely see myself returning to this often
Awesome instrumentals (many a times even ambient) with nice vocals. Fav tracks :- 2) Backwater - idk what it is, but i like it. nice instrumentals 5) King's Lead Hat - Groovy daft punk-esque pop rock and electronica. 6) Here He Comes- Pretty guitar ballad. (similar to here comes the sun) 8) By This River - soothing sad piano song, rest all songs after this are ambient. I was suprised by how much I thoroughly enjoyed this album, and is a great piece from start to finish.
A varied but largely enjoyable album which I went into with no preconceptions having not knowingly sought out Brian Eno before in the past. It's definitely of a time, but pleasant enough for repeated listens despite no song really grabbing my attention and compelling me to add to my favourites
Cool futuristic sound, made with hollow spacy beats and synthesized sounds. Can feel the Beatles and David Bowie influences in some of the more upbeat direct songs.
bass is killer
Kinda meh, didn't really do much for me but it wasn't difficult to listen to by any means
Strange but beautiful moments.
So this is midpoint if it was only 1001 long (I know it’s not). Maybe I’m feeling fatigue or maybe not but I feel on a run of ok but not great records.
i liked it but kinda basic
Herkkä ja hieno! Eno on ennalta hieman tuntematon 3/3
Better than I thought it would be.
Didn't mind the music, though 80's is not my fav sound. His voice is not to my taste. It contrasts in a not good way with the melody.
Really enjoyed this one without any expectations!
No really my thing
Good but there are better Eno albums out there
A better Eno effort than the last few I’ve received - gets quite spry on uptempo tracks like ‘Lead Hat,’ wish we could see more of that Eno on the list than the ambient snoozers of late.
When I first pulled up today's album, I was not enthusiastic about it. I had a Brian Eno record last week (Here Come the Warm Jets) and it was absolute garbage. No redeeming qualities at all. From that, I drew the assumption that this would be the same. I was wrong. Although not my favorite album of all time, at least this one had basic song structure, and a musical direction. I actually didn't suffer listening to this album. Honestly, when the album started with the weird song No One Receiving, I thought I was doomed, but that was immediately followed by Backwater, which is a basic art rock song. The whole record kind of then settled into that art rock/psychadelica genre with the odd weird song scattered throughout. I don't mind an odd song here and there throughout an album, but when the whole thing is fucked, I just can't take it. A few songs (moreso on side 2) were completely instrumental, and kind of fit together into a sort of mini epic (the last 3 songs on the record). Overall, an experimental album, but one more strongly rooted in traditional musical themes. For that I am thankful. Nothing jaw dropping, but a fairly average album. Favourite songs: King's Lead Hat, Backwater Least favourite songs: No One Receiving, Kurt's Rejoinder 3/5
Starts off sounding like Eno took the Station To Station tapes and added his vocal! I really thought I’d accidentally put on Stay! No problems copying his Bowie work, pity his vocals are not as exciting. Second half is into Eno’s ambient project - a but dull for my taste. A low three since two would be extremely harsh given the musicality.
Quirky music that my brain quickly decided was background music, and the album slid by while I thought about other things. Not bad, just not particularly good. Smack bang on a 3/5.
Everyone knows Brian Eno's music. Some have listened to the windows 95 song thousands of times. Do I get to rate that now? Or is this only for this album? Ugh. So tough. Some good tunes here. But most are less engaging.
Energy Fools The Magician, King’s Lead Hat, Here He Comes, Julie With, By The River, Through Hollow Lands, 3.5/5
3+
I liked this a lot. This surprised me. I’d certainly listen again.
i guess technically interesting but its alright as a album to listen to
Good album, was expecting a full on Ambient album but there are some good rock tunes on it.
What does Brian Eno eat for breakfast? Pork chops.
Zal hier nooit helemaal aan wennen, maar dit was best sfeervol
Was hyped to see Eno on the list... Can't remember if we've had him or not. Have to say at first I was finding it quite jarring and then became more my bag. There's just so much Eno I guess you can't love it all
I liked it, was nice background music, so cool experimental stuff but nothing I'd come back to
litt spess ass
okay, not really memorable to be honest
Need to give it another listen
Not sure what I was expecting from this, but I was not grippered immediately.. I think it's a bit out there for the sake of being out there. A strutting catwalk of musical showboating.
I liked the slower, quieter songs. Some of these were very relaxing!
A cacophony of sounds, textures, moods and feelings. Quite abstract which doesn’t work all the time but there are some moments of quality that shine. Can definitely hear Talking Heads, Devo, David Bowie and Trent Reznor in this album. King Lead’s Hat and Spider and I are highlights.
Oivaa musisointia.. Brian eno.. Avantgarde on... hienoa.. Työtä respekti... Eka puolisko en vittu ymmärrä niin rasittavaa... Toka puolisko upeaa...
I always love about half of most Eno albums. Kings Lead Hat is a great stomp, and the touches of Young Americans and his interest in Talking Heads and the US new wave scene generally work well here. It's the quirkier English eccentric stuff that I find slightly less convincing. Although I am sure those ideas got recycled later on and worked better after a tryout here. Eno is a genius in my book, but his song-based albums are always a mix of miss and hit for me.
Eno always interests me. You're always going to get something interesting from him. It's not always what you want, but he's not afraid to experiment. This is really dreamy in places, without straying into hippy shit territory. Here He Comes is gorgeous.
Getting a few middle of the road ones lately, another one to not write home about
This is the fourth!! Brian Eno album on this list and the other three I heavily criticized and disliked. I did not enjoy the experimental nature of his music. I was a bit pessimistic going in to listening to another of his albums, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much more I enjoyed this one. I think with another listen or two, I would possibly even upgrade this to a 4/5. This one was much better, Brian Eno.
I know Brian Eno mostly from his Ambient projects, which are some of my favourite (and Roxy Music of course). This album was a refreshing change from the other versions of Eno. It felt very experimental, while still maintaining an enjoyable listening quality that I would definitely go back to and explore further. Nothing particularly stood out to me to elevate this album above the pack, but I still enjoyed the listen. Fav Tracks: Backwater, King's Lead Hat, Julie With
Unimpressed
S'écoute bien, un style unique mais familier à la fois. Art pop selon wikipedia. Vaudrait la peine d'essayer plus de son catalogue.
Based on my distaste for Roxy Music thusfar, I didn't think I was going to like this at all, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised. I definitely can see myself revisiting this one at some future date. It had a unique je ne sais quoi. Standouts: No One Receiving, King's Lead Hat, Here He Comes, By This River
Surprisingly pleasant, YouTube put Prince up next which was much better.
This is one of those albums in this list I would never have listened to without it. I think it's also one of those albums that if I'd found at a certain time in my life I'd know it really well. Love the fretless bass, enjoy the discordant bits and amused by Phil Collins playing drums.
3/10, 30%
Not really feeling it the first couple of tracks. Album sounds well produced but it's a bit too experimental for me. 3/5
Another Brian Eno album. Again it's fine. Nothing mind blowing, nothing special. Average.
Knepigt. Allra bäst är han ju med tyskar. Trots allt Eno men inte Cluster eller Harmonia.
Inte min sorts Brian Eno. Men 3/5 för att det trots allt ÄR Brian Eno
Har inte lyssnat på denna innan. Bra skiva!
worth another listen - I suspect these grow on you
Meh, pretty boring, middle of the road, pop/rock Nothing to write home about (or listen to again)
Not convinced this list was actually prepared by Eno
Nothing groundbreaking or big standouts here for me. I've definitely heard other songs by Brian Eno that were more interesting than anything on this album. I did save these songs: Kurt's Rejoinder, King's Lead Hat
T3B 1. Backwater 2. Energy Fools The Magician 3. Through Hallowed Lands Pretty interesting listen. 3.
We know what Brian Eno does now, it either really appeals or it just sits there as you go about your day doing other stuff. And that's fine, to have a floor where it's not annoyingly bad is a pretty hard thing to do, but let's not pretend Before And After Science and other stuff is transcendent or really and truly enjoyable. It just is, it's 2/5 or 3/5 depending on the day you're having and I think this gets to a 3, just. Maybe a 2 tomorrow.
This is quite odd, but I actually quite like it. Really janky changes in styles. Backwater is a bizarre song, but weirdly catchy, there's an instrumental, Here He Comes sounds like it could be off a Jarvis solo album, and the sound of By This River is great. Not a worldbeater, not coherent, but a pleasant enough listen and I'll go back to several of the songs. 3/5.
Okay
Pop. Rock. Un poco aburrido.
I like this album but not very familiar with it. I can hear his influence on David Bowie, Robert Fripp, David Byrne, and Peter Gabriel... and vice versa. I'm more familiar with Brian as a producer and never got into his ambiance music. I love his creativity but lose interest with his excessive repetition (same issue with Robert Fripp). I'll need to listen to this album a few more times to get everything out of it but will rate it as average for the time being.
Is Brian Eno the first artist to fool around with sonic landscapes? I don’t know. Do I enjoy sonic landscapes? Sometimes. I’m glad I got to listen to this album twice. It was OK the first time, but I appreciated it more the second time. I don’t often have the luxury of listening to our daily album more than once, which I think is a shame because, unless something really strikes chord, I am more likely to give it a lower rating. Julie With and Down by the River we’re my favorite songs on this record.
I've always enjoyed this album but have never loved it. There's not a song I dislike, though I find them all a tad cold and the production a wee bit thin. Also, I don't care for how the album is broken up into a groovier side and a mellow side, though, when this came out and it was only available on vinyl, I can see the appeal of putting on whichever side you're in the mood for. But in the digital age, not so much. Still, Eno creates great sounds and he has a real gift for catchy melodies, and his lyrics paint lovely pictures. It's a 3.5 for me.
Generally ok, kinda feel like some songs may be a tad bit too out there for my taste
Better than the last Enon album we got. Has some talking heads vibes at times. At the same time I really had to force myself to actively listen to this as it tends to slide of to the background real fast
Is was OK - though generally it seemed to pass through my mind without leaving much of a trace
It was just okay. Absolutely nothing special for me 6/10
I'm more familiar with Eno based on reputation than his actual work (apart from his stint with Roxy Music), so my only expectations here were simple: this album was going to be weird. It was indeed weird. Didn't love it; didn't hate it. Probably an album I'll want to revisit again at some point.
enjoyed it more than I expected to
Like a lot of his records, it starts out playful and upbeat, and then drifts into contemplativeness and melancholy, with a few tracks seeming to aim for outright inertia or dead air. The latter half is more effective. "Here He Comes" is one's fave and decent enough but as a whole this falls short, largely because it seems a tale of two sides, neither of which excel. The new-wave/indie rock feel, however Talking Heads-esque, is unconvincing (no singer Eno) and there was much better ambient to come. Thus, the effect is more experimental than effective. Still, it's Eno so 3 stars minimum.
det var ganska cool
Not what I expected from Eno, but maybe the more ambient stuff is later. There are visions of what is to come. 2.5
Speciale muziek. Vond het moeilijk om een beoordeling te geven, maar was wel ok
Great record, reminded me of talking heads a lot, obviously, because eno produced their biggest albums.
Fine
I thought it would be more ambient like his other albums, but the first few songs were actually listenable. Might try this again.
Interesting funk/groove electronica. Not my style though
As a general rule the ambient sections were killer and the upbeat sections were.. not my cup of tea. Definitely a middle of the road album for me, not one I'll be going to again save a few songs, but not an offensive album to my ears by any stretch.
Not one of his strongest albums for me, pleasant listen but slightly too much going on for background working, not strong enough on the tunes for attention grabbing.
Ahead of its time
ok
très intéressant cet album!
I was expecting weird and wacky but actually it was very listenable and I enjoyed it. Not quite a 4* but certainly high 3*
I found out later in the afternoon having listened to this album all day that my computer had some audio issues leading to cracking, popping, etc. It probably says a fair bit about what I think of Eno that I thought this was deliberate. Despite that I persisted so it must have been OK.
This didn't do much for me. It's was okay.
Mix of funk, new wave, AOR, pop. Perhaps because of this eclecticism, it can be a bit bland in places. Predates ambient albums Alright, nothing special
Not what I expected
3.5
There’s something impressive going on here. Not really my bag though.
this album was so just pretty. it was calming and enlightening. it was somewhat bland but it was good and simple but complex.
A few of the tracks are good, but the album is a bit all over the place. And completely trails off in the second half.
Eno er fínn.
pretty chill
In listening to songs like Kurt’s Rejoinder you get a good sense of the impact that he had on David Byrne’s solo albums. King’s Lead Hat sounds like it belongs on Fear of Music, which came out 3 years later! No One Receiving and Energy Fools could have been out-takes from side 2 of Heroes or Low. After listening to this I get a better sense of how Eno influenced the sounds of other artists, though as an album, it seems a bit disjointed to me.
Not a lot going on here for me. Well produced.
Oh 1001 you desperately want me to start getting into Brian Eno, don't you? This is getting closer.
Not bad. Starting to see what all the fuss is about.
Interesting
Überhaupt nicht so unerträglich, wie ich befürchtet hatte. Ich gebe einer Platte mit Brian Eno-Beteiligung 3 Sterne. Hätte ich nicht für möglich gehalten. Schlechte 3 Sterne allerdings.
Not bad, actually enjoyed it much more than the other Brian Eno album
Oh Brian. You are larger than life.
Very Eno.
Post Roxy Eno here and quite interesting mix of electronic and rock music. I loved Roxy and his creative influence was obvious throughout their early years. Whilst not an Eno aficionado I can appreciate his place in rock history. Didn't dislike this album and reminiscent of other electronic rock of the era, (Bill Nelson's Red Noise/Hawkwind/Kraftwerk etc) I particularly liked "Backwater" "Kings Lead Hat" (Nods to Mr Byrne et al) and "Spider and I" (Which I think could have been from Bowies Low album in sound) A positive album and can see, influence wise, why it is on the list but I don't have it in my collection.
Not much that was memorable on this album except for some of the production. By no means bad to listen to
A nice pleasant enough listen. I might revisit one day as this was alright.
I liked the second half more than the first half.
A real mix of styles here: electronic beats, new wave and pub piano. You can hear LCD Soundsystem taking notes. Best Tracks: No One Receiving; King's Lead Hat; By This River
Not quite what I was expecting from the Father of Ambient Music, but still very entertaining.
This is fine. Not really sure what I think of it. I don't love or hate much in particular. It's tough to separate it from my general expectations of what I want from Eno, which is more his later ambient work. The second half edges closer to this territory and therefore becomes a bit more exciting to me.
a 3 from start to finish
Well, this is what my third Brian Eno album on this list? I guess I can tell you this much, it's the best one. It's dreamy, but a little like Morrissy meets The Kinks. Not great, not horrible.
Two years. Several musicians from different countries. One hundred plus tracks. It seems that these are recipes for a wider and more diverse (and possibly more exhausting) version of "The White Album", but fortunately, Brian Eno did it pretty well and only ten tracks made it. This album is quite a ride. At the beginning, I thought it sounded colorful (I'm thinking about the spooky black and white album cover) and fun, like being in a carnival. But like a bland cotton candy, it sounds generic and forgettable, no matter how colorful. But as I said, it's a ride. After a while, things get more serious - less colorful, but in a good way. The ambient-ish tracks are great, it's like riding from the noisy circus to a pleasant, quiet park. Still, while it's a ride, it's pretty rough one. The rock-ish tracks and the ambient-ish tracks didn't go really well, but I guess that's the "before" and "after" science that he was talking about. So does he tell us that the world is a circus - even happy - before science? It's tempting to dive into it. But I don't think it matters. The only sure thing is that this album is an interesting, rough ride between circus-y rock and heavenly ambience.
Why so much eno
More interesting than I expected at points, but droning and dull overall. I've never really "got" this vibe
Kinda neat ambiant stuff
Ca detend et cest original, j’ai aime mais pour relaxer. 3.25
Not much to this for me. I bet with repeated listenings I might notice some things. But for now it’s just simple ambient.
Stark
Interesting stuff. Like Roxy Music met up with Talking Heads.
“The murkiness of the quiet, largely instrumental reflections that take over side two [don’t diminish] side one's oblique, charming tour of the popular rhythms of the day.”
No one receiving? -Okay! This is interesting stuff. I don't know I'm in 1977. I will listen to more at some point.
He's a very interesting guy who has been involved in a lot of music I like, so I looked forward to listening to this when it popped up in my rotation today. I listened to it, and it's a mixed bag for me, but overall I liked it. Some tracks just didn't do anything for me (the more frenetic ones, some of which sounded like mockery at times, which might be the point but I didn't like them), and others drew me in (e.g., 'Energy Fools The Magician' caught my interest, as did 'Through Hollow Lands'). Totally get the connection to his future work with the Talking Heads, though, and that's very cool. For the most part, I think I might have liked this album more if there were little or no vocals. I did like 'By This River,' though, and that has clear vocals. The keys on that track are great. And 'Spider And I' is really cool.
Sonlara dogru guzellesiyor
Not as ethereal as other Eno albums but still some good tunes, 'Julie with' being the pick of the bunch.
Ended up listening twice, quite pleasing for my one brain cell.
Actually not bad. Pleasantly surprised. Very 80s. Interesting to listen to the music of the man behind a lot of U2's success.
I'd say 3.5, but not a 3.5 that close to a 4.
Not overwhelming
Yeah, fine. Nothing really of note but also not terrible
nice and different from what i normally listen to
The songs I like on this album are really great. Others are okay and grew on me over time. Overall, okay album.
I think I know why so many are inspired by Eno now. Very unique, starting off rock with video game esque electronic sounds before their time, ending contemplative and atmospheric. A little hard to recall, not really a catchy set of tunes.
I honestly don't know. Is it good? Would you listen to it again? What's the point of the ambient stuff? When is that for? A couple of belters though, so 🤷♂️
Hadn’t listened to this album before, familiar with Another Green World / Warm Jets and this is similar avant garde pop, before he went ambient. Definitely has a lot in common with Bowie’s finest album ‘Low’, produced by Eno and released in the same year. Interesting and enjoyable.
Not his best work or my favourite Eno album by any stretch. A bit more more and miss than another green world and I prefer the overall direction he went on music for airports but still loads to enjoy on this and deserves repeat listens
Definitely better than the last album we listened to by Brian Eno. Still not really my favorite music but not bad
This album grew on me. It's unsettling, both lyrically and melodically with rare chord resolves throughout. His voice is haunting as the synths and electronic orchestration play out. Favorite song: By This River
I honestly don't know. Is it good? Would you listen to it again? What's the point of the ambient stuff? When is that for? A couple of belters though, so 🤷♂️
.
Interesting artist. Creative and sountracks
Interesting
Tranquilo. Sosegado. Buena voz
Brian Eno is the king of chill and that's what I appreciate about him. His pre-ambient days, like this album are alien to me. Interesting music nonetheless, but not something particularly enjoy.
Not bad.
Started off really strong, then wasn't nearly as good. Still a fine album overall.
inoffensive, background music.
Ganz ok, erinnert mich ein wenig an Terry Hall.
Very eclectic mix of sounds that kept me interested. Found it hard still to stay completely interested
Vocals Brian Eno is not my thing. The only song I already liked was "By This River". This entire rest is... acceptable. Not much to say.
Some good stuff but I can't recall much from when I listened a month ago
Avant Garde and a bit strange.
A load of pretentious, avant-garde new wave bollocks. It was always going to happen, with a name like Brian Peter George St John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno. Fucks sake.
Interesting, but a bit forgettable.
Better than expected. I have listened to a bit of Eno in the past and thought it was drivel. I started listening to this album with reluctance and was pleasantly surprised how listenable it was. Reminded me of XTC at times. I would probably listen to this again.
Well produced/well written imo, but it's not my preferred genre so I can't properly evaluate it.
found a good song or two
This was 50/50 cool and shit. Some of it was borderline new wave dog shit, some was cool ambient stuff. 3/5.
Not my vibe. It's David Byrne but not as palatable.
I never need to hear this again.
nah, nicht so gut. 1.87 Sterne von mir aus, aber auch gut gemeint
Not that great
It just passed me by. It didn’t offend but it had no consequence.
Not my fav Eno, arguably a 2.5 but I don’t like it enough to bump up, so 2
In a nutshell: a Before and After production. I can hear sonic overlap on this album compared to Berlin era Bowie and early Talking Heads, so I did a quick check. Here is the timeline: 1975 * allegedly started recording this album and other projects- Discreet Music, Evening Star and Music For Films. * January: hit by a taxi, physical recovery at home * July and August: records Another Green World * November 14th: Another Green World released. * December: Discreet Music released. 1976 * September and October - Recording for Low by David Bowie begins. 1977 * January 14th: Low released * April - May: recording for Talking Heads '77 begins. * July and August: recording for "Heroes" begins. * September 16th: Talking Heads '77 released * October 14th: "Heroes" released * December: Before and After Science was released I have a theory on this album: Brian Eno was cross pollinating. It's not unusual for musicians to be inspired by other musicians. Maybe Eno infused the sounds he had in mind into the Bowie and TH records (which both parties obviously loved), and fleshed them out on B&AS. A "if you liked Low or Heroes, you might like my album" kind of thing. This could be a reach. But the thought has crossed my mind. Eno is more of a music person than a lyrics person. His work is textured, atmospheric. And when you add lyrics to his music, it feels strange. It's what I call the Jeff Tweedy rule- only add enough lyrics to not distract from the melody. Or music, in this case. Overall: 4/10
this is the kind of album that makes me want to listen to like 15 other alubms that are categorically better
#1018. Jesus Christ. So much Brian Eno. Too much Brian Eno. With only 72 albums left, surely this is the last one I have to listen to, right? Right? RIGHT? Please. 2/5: annoying
Really not my thing atm
Not my thing. its fine but I did not catch my attention
ethereal. electrocnic. pop?
I can’t ever seem to properly get into Brian Eno despite liking many albums he produced for others. This one I at least didn’t dislike, I just don’t imagine myself ever listening by to it again
2/5
I prefer Eno's albums where he does weird ambient shit and doesn't sing.
Didn't move or interest me.
Getting pretty sick of listening to Brian Eno’s music (second album this week and fifth overall). By now I get what he’s all about: he’s a savant producer that had some innovative ideas about incorporating ambient sounds and electronic components into rock music. We didn’t need six of his albums on this list to hammer this point home, especially the album Music for Airports. His music, to me, is sleepy, boring, and uninspiring. Hope I get something worth my time tomorrow. 2/5
Wasn’t terrible but wasn’t particularly memorable either
some artists got a little too greedy on this list.....one album from Brian would be plenty....
Some OK, but more noise than I really enjoy.
Arrancó raro, siguió bien y terminó aburrido. Igual, en general, sorprendió para bien.
This was not a very good album and Def not the best I have ever heard, pretty mid to low
The man behind the crossword clue! This album is ahead of its time, but ultimately not a sound I am into.
Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes Here he coooooomes
I have to be in the mood to enjoy Brian Eno. It’s like when a funky restaurant is trying to “challenge” your pallet. Wasn’t in the mood this time
Figured one the best to ever do it would really impress me, but this never seemed like it took off from a slow start
rollazo de albu
Ei iskenyt. 2/5.
The ending was way better than the beginning, but nothing to write home about.
Just not my thing.
I liked just one song, i think art rock/art pop is not for me...
Oh another Eno album just a week later? That will be my last Eno album from the list. Also one I haven't listen to before. I'm afraid this one was the most boring one of the bunch 2/5
If I forgot I was listening to it, quite enjoyed it. Any focus and it is a bit meh
Second half better than the first. Prefer his ambient stuff which is superior to his forgettable pop stuff.
A lot of distinguishable styles he's done before, but nothing really stood out and it was ultimately worse than the sum of its parts
getting "we have bowie at home" energy (this was the year eno worked with bowie on low). lyrics are utterly bonkers. overall was fine, nothing stood out, little
Was ok. Music wasn’t for me, was chill background music MAYBE. Wouldn’t listen again 3-4/10
I'm not sure what the point of this is. 1.8/5
little bit too chill started nodding off 6/10
Kann mit seinen Ambient-Sachen deutlich mehr anfangen.
So done with Brian Eno albums. This was so boring. We definitely don’t need 4 albums of this dude on here. I pray there isn’t another one.
Eh bah, rompiche quand même hein. J’étais curieux de découvrir ce nom
No me gustó, muy triste pero me aburrió más que entristecer.
Honestly didn't know his career went that far back. I think of U2 when I think of Brian Eno. Anyways, he have evolved quite a bit, hasn't he?
Vet, best uniek
astilla la verdad me saturo
I have liked other Brian Eno work, but I guess I wasn't feeling this album?
For as much hype as Eno got in the 80’s alt scene, this was a bit disappointing and boring.
Everything blurred together
still don't care for his vocals-doesn't matter if he's solo or w another group. music was meh but really got boring last few tracks. I'll forget it all by tomorrow
Aside from Brian Eno being a NYT crossword puzzle clue almost daily and the title of an MGMT song, I don’t know anything about Brian Eno. I now know I’m not a fan. This wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever heard, but I don’t want to hear it again.
Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? Unfamiliar How do I feel about this artist? I like his work with David Byrne Favorite song(s)? Backwater, Spider and I Overall Thoughts: The start of this album was great. It reminded me of the Talking Heads a lot. And then in the second half I really dragged. The last song was super pretty but I but then I was just kind of bored with the album.
Started off great, similar vibes to talking heads. But it drifts off fast. Literally lulled me to sleep
some of the tracks, like "King's Lead Hat" caught my attention, but generally speaking, 70s art rock is not my thing and I've never had that Brian Eno worship that some people seem to have. But I can definitely hear his influence in a lot of modern indie music.
Me no like Eno.
Thankfully only one song was available on Spotify and that was “By This River” which wasn’t bad but I cannot stand to listen to another project by Brian Eno
So Apple has two essential albums they did write-ups for, plus almost 10 other Eno albums available, but this one is missing. must be shit. Typical for this list. "Screw all the good albums this artist did and critics wrote about, Listen to this pile of shit because I'm somehow a better critic who doesn't totally just jam my list full of Elvis Costello and British garbage!"
Wasn't for me
Mediocre
If this were sung by someone else it would be so much better. The phasey, chorus-y vocals don’t work. Instrumentals are fine
I liked the first track on this album and was hopeful for the rest of the tracks. But I found it to be a bit too intentionally whacky at times. It was hit and miss all the way through.
Decent 2. I got excited about this album when I heard the first song but unfortunately, it slowly declined from there. He’s super talented, I just thought some of the songs were weird and not nice to listen to
A little disappointed in this album. It started off with vocals which was a surprise but kind of a mess. Eventually it progressed into the ambient music but it was not as good as his later stuff.
mein Favorit: "By this river" (hatte ich vor Jahren zuerst als Cover von Martin L. Gore gehört)
Don't really got a ton to say about this one other than I'm not liking the silliness of the majority of the tracklist. It does pick up quite a bit towards the end starting with Julie With (Hilarious because those are slower ballads), but not enough to really get me into the record. Honestly enjoyed Another Green World more. My liking the back end of Before and After Science makes sense as it's more in the ambient/post-rock world compared to the first half of the tracklist.
Super influential
Bored to tears by Brian Eno. He's an excellent producer and we'll leave it like that
I like some atmospheric music. Some experimental music. Most of Beck. But not so much this
Interesting stuff. You can kinda tell he was about to go into his Ambient era, and he's really trying things out. Not quite for me but respect the attempt.
Wasn’t a fan
Taas ihmettelen miten tämäkin levy on päätynyt tälle listalle. Tästä puuttui oikeastaan kaikki...
This might be a dumb statement (I don't know enough about 70's music history), but this sounds like he's doing a bad Bowie vocal impersonation.
Art for art's sake.
I enjoy the ambient-sounding tracks like Julie With... but overall, Idk. I see the inspiration, I can see the vision, I just don't think its Eno at his best.
“1001 albums to here before you die” or “anything that Briano Eno ever made”. We’ve had so many Brian Eno albums by now and all of them are quite boring. Many of the tracks are either whimsical or sound like the slow parts of a Pink Floyd song. I’m wasn’t really a fan of this and the whole thing passed me by. 2 star.
It's all just a bit boring really isn't it?
This title feels like it should be more experimental than Here Come the Warm Jets, but it doesn't really sound that way? Maybe it's something that got more adopted into later music, maybe it's just less ambitious. In any case, I think it sounds less interesting.
Good but not my favorite. 2.5 rounded down. I’m getting more ruthless as this project goes on!
not my favorite but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would
When i saw Eno pop up as today’s album i thought this was gonna be a hard slog. It was a pleasant surprise then that ‘no one receiving’ was an enjoyable and interesting listening. Even the vocals work well with the eclectic backing. Whilst not as good ‘backwater’ maintains the ‘better than i expected and has the great lyric “not a sausage to do” It dips from here on, ‘King’s Lead Hat’ is annoying.
I knew I wouldn’t enjoy this when it came up - the best I can say is I didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would. “Backwater” was also lovely and bonkers.
No One Recieving felt a bit Talking Heads, but without David Byrne singing (thus instantly making it a bit better). The vocals also reminded me a bit of Tally Hall but I can't put my finger on why. I wish it was less repetitive, but I liked it. Onto Backwater which felt a bit They Might Be Giants and not just as a result of the lyric "Ooh what to do, not a sausage to do". I think it was the programmed brass that really sealed it. Well that or the handclaps. I liked that too. Kurt's Rejoinder was, to my ears, a cacophony of insane base, noise and Devo-like vocals. Energy Fools The Magician was all Yes styled prog rock, just mercifully brief. King's Lead Hat sounded like someone torturing a piano during a Talking Heads song. Here He Comes sounds a bit like a theme tune to a 70s sitcom, just far too long (but also again, a bit They Might Be Giants). I was somewhat surprised to find out Dave Mattacks, of folk legends Fairport Convention, was the drummer on that and Kurt's Rejoinder. About half way through the album I became aware that while I was not particularly liking it, I thought I potentially could get into it with repeated listens. There were enough parts that have clearly influenced things I do like, I could see (small) glimmers of hope. And then the second half of the album happened... I did not like the b side of this album. At all. 2/5
Prefer a sad boy Brian Eno, specifically the "after science"/back half
Talkings Heads at home Wasn’t a super unpleasant listen but I really don’t get what Eno was going for here. Feels very disconnected at times and nothing really blew me away. There’s some flashes in there for sure but I doubt I listen to that one again
Listened in the car on a trip to Chicago. Entirely uninteresting.
This album is weird, it’s giving me a trauma response from Faust IV. This album gets funky with it and then doesn’t go anywhere after that initial beat hits, it just keeps repeating. The album was short, but I was wishing that I could be listening to something else while I was listening to this album.
Never listened to Brian Eno before as a musician, only as a producer (U2, Coldplay, Bowie, etc). I am going in with an open mind. Track 3 certainly sounds pretty futuristic for 1977 but also sort of like random pieces of music crammed together lowkey getting Faust IV flashbacks. King's Lead Hat sounds like a Talking Heads song for sure and is pretty good. Side 2 slows down massively. Sort of film soundtrack vibes? Noir, melancholy, lots of synths. Definitely pretty forward sounding for the 70s and kind of ambient. I actually enjoyed "Through Hollow Lands" quite a bit though it would be incredibly strange to ever have this album on shuffle. Honestly, meh. Maybe just not for me 2/5
não me agrada
To be fair, it's better than _Another Green World_ but it's a low fucking bar! The reverance for this man remains a mystery to me!
I feel like I could copy and paste my review for Elvia Costello from yesterday! I've not loved the Brian Eno we've had so far, and there's 3 more albums of his to go (not to mention other pies he's had his fingers in!) Its not bad, but its also not really my thing
Made zero impression on me
I do not like Brian Eno
interesting one time listen, but not something i would listen to on repeat.
meh.
Parfaitement à chier
Meh
1.5
Very little here floats my boat. And "Here He Comes" is about 7 minutes too long. I'm glad my dad introduced me to Queen and not this boring crap.
Not a fan of this one
I have no idea if I liked that or not, it all sort of washed past me leaving very little impact. There are a couple of catchy tunes that may have taken up residence in my head and I'll find myself humming them weeks from now and wondering what the hell I'm humming. Mostly though it came, it went, I barely noticed it passsing by.
As drab as my Nan's wallpaper in 1982
It's wild how much I didn't care about this album at all. I figured I'd have loved it since it was Eno and the album is widely praised, but outside of a couple songs I just didn't connect at all to this music
Glemt
Sidste 5 stjernede album var 33 dage siden. Brian Eno bryder ikke den streak
This one gives me occasional Talking Heads vibes, but mostly it’s classic E-NO core nonsense. Side A has a few quirky moments I didn’t hate, but the second half drifts straight into ambient limbo and never comes back.
Well, this is 1,000 times better than yesterday’s album, but that’s not saying a whole lot. I know this project is supposed to challenge me by listening to music I don’t normally listen to but come on. There were some nice moments on this one, but I’ll never come back to it. The closer was the best song on this one.
Wack ass album Fave track: By This River
Feels a bit "eh". It’s not a bad sound but I’d struggle to name a single thing about it that I liked. Probably wouldn’t listen to it again, and if it came up on the radio or on shuffle, I probably wouldn’t even realise.
Sounded like Talking Heads album outtakes. Enough Brian Eno!
*1977. British. *Fine. Didn’t love it. RATING - 6/10
Some funk bass lines but overall bleh
Meh. Mostly atmospheric background music. Not something that moves me.
Gibt mir nicht viel.
Der Mann mag ein Genie sein, aber die Musik erreicht mich einfach nicht
Love Eno but this is a stinker.
Vocals and lyrics didn't appeal to me, it's listenable but forgettable.
Eh
More Eno. Still a no.
Not what I was expecting, okay chill music
This was really annoying in places. Some parts were innovative and interesting, but for the most part it wasn’t great. Which is strange, because I enjoyed Here Come The Warm Jets. No idea why this would be necessary to hear before dying.
That didn't really work for me. It's not terrible but I've no desire to hear it again.
Hasn’t aged as well as his ambient work
I don't know anything about Brian Eno. This album did not engage me at all. The soundscape is sort of interesting.
I wanted to like this, but I sort of didn't. The lyrics / vocals often sound a bit stupid. And there are too few high moments that sound really great. It's a 2.5 star album for me. Rounding down even if that feels harsh.
Boring
A strange album. A few songs, which are ok. The rest is nothing special.
Ахуеть, он еще и поет. Я думал только пикалки делает
Never listened to Brian Eno before as a musician, only as a producer (U2, Coldplay, Bowie, etc). I am going in with an open mind. On track 3 and it certainly sounds pretty futuristic for 1977 but also sort of like random pieces of music crammed together. Honestly, meh. Maybe just not for me.
I think the best thing I can say about this album is that it is interesting. The second best is that it's inoffensive and I was rushing to turn it off. Just okay.
This sounded like the soundtrack of a movie whenever the zany scientist was on screen. These songs are the ravings of a lunatic. Who is this album for?
I get it. Probably pretty forward for 1977. I just don't wanna hear it again Energy Fools the Magician sounds like score music from an 80s USA station movie based in FLA had a baby with the A Clockwork Orange soundtrack
Brian Eno as an artist makes shit music. Brian Eno as a producer makes great music because there are artists involved that are not Brian Eno. This is an album by Brian Eno the artist, and is therefore shit. If Eno wrote more than 100 tracks for this album and narrowed it down to 10, i consider myself fortunate for being spared those additional tortures. On a more positive note, I saved some time with the number of awful tracks I skipped, and I'll be able to listen to something I like this morning ⭐⭐
filled with melancholy as am i
easy to ignore while working
