Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Brian Eno is a well-known name. I didn't know this album though. Quite nice to listen to.
This album is okay. I neither like it nor dislike it. It is pretty creative and fun, there is a good beat, but it is not really my style.
Kings lead hat song I really like this song because how fast paced it is with the singer playing the guitar or maybe the singer is the lead singer and someone is playing the guitar. By this river i like this song how calm the song is and the piano is with singer and then the strings with the flute is pure chefs kiss Spider and i, i really like this song its super good with the violins i think or what insturment it is it makes the song good and the instruments get louder and louder when the singer sings 5
I sure did experience this album
I've heard of this artist but can't recall what legendary band he is a part of. This first track gives me very much LCD Soundsystem vibes. Cool stuff. 3-stars
Odd... I like Brian Eno for his ambient stuff, which you can hear beginning to creep forth in the second half, which I definitely enjoyed more than the first. Not crazy about this one, but did not dislike it either.
This man could write some banger minecraft music. I appreciate his experimental sound but it didn't but didn't enjoy it too much. The highlight of this album was definitely 'julie with' and 'by this river' which i quite enjoyed.
Eno is just super talented and his vision for this project is so interesting, particularly the second half. Instrumentally, this album is impeccable. It starts as more upbeat, and slowly transitions towards more laid back and more experimental songs, which is where the album shines the most. In this second half, I also appreciated much more how Eno's voice worked with the instrumentation. My favourite song was "Julie With", a delicate song where the synthesizers and Eno's voice mix perfectly, with a beautiful guitar towards the end. Overall, I found it a very good album, specially thanks to it's second half.
This would be 4 stars for the music but I hate Eno’s voice. It sounds like he has a mouthful of vanilla pudding and a milk allergy.
I will say this music does sound very forward thinking especially since it was released in 1977. That being said, it’s ok by today’s standards but I can hear the future sounds of the great albums he produced.
I am very neutral on this one, not much to say.
Wasn't looking forward to this after the first two Eno albums...but it was actually pretty solid. His dupe of David Byrne on King's Lead Hat is on point and I gotta give props. Legit had to check the credits to confirm it wasn't actually Byrne singing. This is a 3/4 tweeter for me, but I'm rounding down since it lacked a certain...I don't know what. 3.25/5
This album is like eating one of the first loaves of sourdough bread I sold and pretending it’s good because it’s “where it all started.”
Fine. A few stupid nothing songs.
2.5
The title “Before and After Science” intrigued me—I expected a sense of duality, and in a way, the album delivered that. With the first half feeling more playful and structured, and the second half drifting into ambient calm, it seemed split into two distinct moods. I wasn’t sure what genre to expect, but the slightly gothic cover made me anticipate something more rock-forward. Instead, I got art rock—something I wasn’t familiar with before this challenge. It reminded me of David Bowie’s “Low” and “Heroes,” which makes sense, since I learned that Eno worked on those albums too. On my first listen, I was distracted and barely noticed anything stand out—it felt like the album passed me by. I gave it another shot during a drive, but again, nothing really pulled me in. I felt a bit disinterested. That said, the opening track “No One Receiving” stuck with me—its groove kept creeping back into my head. I gravitate toward ambient and lo-fi sounds, so I appreciated some of the textured, hazy moments. I respect this album for its influence and for how much it’s adored, but it didn’t hit me emotionally. I listened a few times, hoping it would open up to me, but I think I connect more with albums that tell a clearer emotional story. A few tracks might stay in my rotation, but overall, I respect the experimentation more than I enjoyed the experience. Standout Tracks: “No One Receiving”, “King’s Lead Hat”, “Here He Comes”, “Through The Hollow Lands”
Enjoyable, but I liked the Talking Heads-esque songs more than the ambient ones.
There are some really solid pop tunes on this album. Cool to hear the breadth of Eno's talent in addition to the ambient stuff he's more known for.
Third Eno so far...not as good as the other two. 3
Fun, varied album of art rock. I never knew what was coming next. So far, after listening to a lot of Brian Eno’s music on this list, my favorite stuff is either the songs/albums he co-wrote and produced for other artists, or his ambient music. You can hear hints of Bowie and Talking Heads on a lot of the early tracks here. And the end of this album features some beautiful ambient-leaning instrumental sections.
Pretty cool alt-pop album. I think that's how I would genre it? Brian Eno is someone I haven't listened to much but I've been recommended him for a loooong time. This album is a definitely a delight. It's 1977 but definitely ahead of it's time because to me it sounds pretty 1980's. Great dynamics, nice production, and cool guitar sounds. Nice album cover too!
A tale of two albums. Back half was completely different from the beginning, and thank goodness. It’s too bad, because as annoying as those first five tracks are, the rest is my favorite Eno of his five albums on the list.
This definitely feels like a bridge between two different versions of Brian Eno. The second half of the album was markedly different, more ambient, and would have garnered an additional star if it was reflective of the album as a whole.
I liked this well enough. But I still maintain that Eno’s strength as an artist lies in producing more than performing.
I respect his love of sounds and his ability to fill up the silence/round out a full sound, but I don’t feel enough about these songs to round up. Talking Heads sound in the first songs; I can see why he worked with them on an album.
It was pretty OK. Reminded me of Talking Heads a bit. I like the music more than the lyrics and singing. Which is something, given how prevalent the synths are here. I guess? Yeah. Pretty OK.
enjoyed some of it because of some particular beatlesesque melodies
I liked it a little better than other Eno albums I've listened to from this list, but he's just not really for me I guess.
Meh
Cool but didn’t wow me. Enjoyed the listen
Brian Eno's stuff is usually weird but I usually like it
Mad respect for his work and influence on all of those artists. But I didn't get much out of this album.
Thought Brian Eno was meant to be 15 minute ambient songs what happened here
2.8 2x
The front half doesn’t really distinguish itself much from other artists that do that same thing better. The back half, which is more ambient, is better, like a less dark Pink Floyd. Ultimately, this shows why Will Shortz’s favorite artist is a better producer than a frontman.
Interesting, chill music. I really like “By This River” but nothing else stood out to me. Parts were quite self indulgent.
Who knew Brian Eno could sing? I always thought he just did instrumentals. Some of the songs are quite cool. They sound like the 80s despite being made the decade before. A few are a bit bad though. 3 stars for "Before and After Science".
Slipped in between alright and too weird for my tastes. I would probably give it another listen still. Didn't hate it.
70's album with the sounds of an 80s album
Fringe, best way to describe Eno and that is NOT a bad thing. His approach makes music fun. Today, it all sounds the same. That is why this era will always stand out.
Eno is a weird dude. Always has been, always will be. Brilliant producer, but I didn't know what to make of this.
When this album popped up, I silently groaned. My limited previous exposure to Brian Eno has not been anything I have enjoyed. This album surprised me. Although I didn’t love it, I didn’t mind it either. I even genuinely liked the last song, Spider and I. Anyway, what I thought was going to be a two star rating from me will be a three star rating. It still isn’t really my thing at all, and I probably won’t listen to it again, but I was glad to be exposed to it.
I haven't quite got on board with Eno's solo work from this list so far. Not sure I'd go so far as to say this converted me but the more upbeat tracks, which remind of a kinda prototype Talking Heads, are pretty fun and there are some catchy hooks here. I zone out a bit in the more ambient and mellow tracks on the second side, such as Through Hollow Lands
Perfect runtime for a quirky album like this. Couple of weaker songs but mostly good. By This River and Spider and I remind me of the Twin Peaks score, in their sublime eeriness. Backwater is my favourite. Ooh what to do, not a sausage to do. Marvelous.
I like Eno but I don't get this one. It sounds like XTC! That's not good. Through Hollow Lands was very enjoyable.
I have a working theory that, much like you can connect almost every actor to Kevin Bacon, you can do the same with Brian Eno. His production credits alone read like a who’s who of music history. Be it his heralded work with U2 before it became fashionable to hate them, his work with Coldplay after they became everyone’s favorite band to hate, or the legendary Berlin Trilogy with Bowie (and if you hate Bowie, please get your brain checked). With that in mind—and having occasionally dipped into Music for Airports—I was genuinely excited to dive into Before and After Science. Sadly, I walked away feeling a bit shortchanged. Recorded over two years in five sessions across two studios and two countries, the album has an ambient/art rock core but lacks cohesion. The first half, in particular, feels scattered—shifting from the jittery, funk-tinged “No One Receiving” to the jaunty, almost cabaret-like “Backwater” without much connective tissue. That's not to say that there weren't moments I enjoyed. “By This River”, for example, is a stunning, stripped-down piano ballad that feels like the album’s emotional center, its soft, repetitive melody gently pulling you into stillness. I found myself craving more moments like that. With 29 solo albums and 22 collaborative albums, it’s hard to know where to start with Eno. For me, this wasn’t quite the right entry point. Still, I’m optimistic that one of his other albums will win me over.
послушала мельком, приятная музыка ставлю лайк
Mjoah, experimentell, schwankte so n bisschen zwischen Elektro Chill Musik und Pop. Nichts was meiner Meinung nach heraus stach, 3 Sterne
Unspektakulär
Goofy until I got to “Energy Fools the Musician”, that’s the Eno I know. Through Hollow Lands is fantastic as well.
Not that memorable to me
This album goes from good to shit to A DROP DEAD BEAUTY. The start of this album has a lot of cool instrumentation decisions in a unique way (prob cause it's mostly MIDI stuff), and I was excited for an album with that direction. No One Receiving whilst having weird but pretty cool intentional vocal choices made me ponder if this was just gonna be another one of those "albums" that seems to litter this 1001 albums (the rock albums with a lil quirky change in them), or something unique and not expected. Sadly over the first 7 songs, the album just drops down in quality, ending up me letting it be background noise, with Julie With being... not a good song at all. I was so tuned out. I had 4 songs to go. I didn't want to continue. I hear the start of By This River. I froze. The gentle piano melody grabs all my attention. The backing chimes help add so much ambience. His vocals come in. They work so well. The midi strings come in. It gives the piece such a melancholic feeling to it. I hate making this comparison, but it honestly reminds me of "Waterfall" and "Quiet Water" from the UNDERTALE ost. But I think this does the vibe SO SO SO much better. The rest of the album complimented By The River so well... it saved the album. I assume this was the part after Science, because did the album just resonate with me once finishing. This album reminds me of the Grand Canyon :) Fav song: By This River (did i even need to say)
It is a very experimental album with a lot of quality and unique instrumentation. Enjoyable listen and I'm excited to hear more albums from him. Favourite Album - King's Lead Hat
I liked this better then his other stuff.
this was okay
Some nice moments. Funky bass lines are cool but the album feels pretty dated as a whole. On the cusp between fun and obnoxious. It’ll probably scratch the itch for those who it’s nostalgic. I don’t think it’ll appeal to many new listeners.
Bien
Pleasant
норм. особенно ничего не впечатлило, но в целом музыка приятная.
It was alright, 2.8
I loved this! 3.75
Eno’s last pop/rock-oriented album is a bit of an odds and sods project, opening with a very funky track that foreshadows his work with Talking Heads a couple of years after this, and then jumping to some more glam-leaning work reminiscent of his first two solo albums, and a lot of more open and ambient tracks that hint towards his 80s solo projects. It’s a strong enough album but lacks the focus of his earlier records, and a couple of the songs don’t really seem to go anywhere
While the first half is standard boring rock, the second half is really interesting. There are some beautiful ambient songs.
3.5. I know many think this is the best album of the 70s. I think it's just really good.
It’s interesting rather than actually good
Either I can remember of every Eno album is something different.
find die ruhige lieder sehr hübsch, upbeat eher ahstrengend
Hat mich nicht weggehauen aber ingsesamt ganz i.O.
-I was kind of back and forth on how I wanted to rate this but I’m gonna go 3.5 stars. It’s pretty interesting, reminds me a lot of Another Green World and his work with David Bowie on the Berlin Trilogy -some of the songs were a bit more memorable than others just on a first listen but damnn I really love the instrumentation -Favorites are Kurt’s Rejoinder, King’s Lead Hat, and Through Hollow Lands
Very different to the other Brian Eno albums we've had. But a bit like his previous albums, I'm really not sure what I make of it. Was it ⭐⭐⭐⭐ or was it ⭐⭐? I'm going in the middle and settling on ⭐⭐⭐. This list has made me want to explore Brian Eno more than any other artist, because I find his albums interesting, but challenging. I suspect he has probably made an album or two that I would really love, but I don't think I've found it yet.
Not as bad as I thought it was going to be
I'm not an Eno fan, but, it's fine I guess.
3 - The two songs that I regularly listen to from this album are pretty strong tracks, and they ended carrying the album for me. That's not to say that the remaining tracks are bad, because I remember liking some of them, but I'll probably only ever come back to those two songs.
Nice album. Mostly relaxing and songs being sung which isn't your normal Eno album.
I feel like I'm missing a bit of the context here. I'm familiar with Brian Eno, which maybe makes me give it the time of day more than if it were an unknown artist. Still, though some songs were pretty decent, others were not. The erratic genre changing resulted in a poor flow, particularly in the first half. Latter half was a bit better though. 2.5*
Ethereal
Plätschert im Hintergrund so dahin...
Brian Eno seems to be maybe the most prolific musician in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die List. His name seems to come up a hell of a lot. I did enjoy this album, but it would be a stretch to say that it was amazing or that I feel it will stick with me. It was certainly interesting and a little odd, which is what I’ve come to expect, and I can appreciate how genre defying he is between albums. This album though, I’d say it’s fine.
Pop experimental. Ni fu ni fa.
Much prefer the ambient second half
It was okay, but cool that it was in the 70s, sounds a lot more recent
Wasn't sure at first, but I ended really enjoying the cinematic feel of this album. Will definitely check out more of Eno's work
Brian Eno is one of a kind, isn't he? The music on Before and After Science is so beautiful. This album is definitely experimental, but it isn't so experimental that it's unrelatable. Sometimes songs are lively rock and pop numbers, but some songs are unexpectedly tender songs. Though Eno's next album was pure electronic ambiance, I hear hints of that here. I enjoyed the creative song titles, too. 3.5
I went into this one with some trepidation but you know what? This Eno guy may have something here.
A strange mixture of songs, not sure what genre this album falls under, but I weirdly liked it. Was a overall pleasant listening experience
I think I have to sit down and listen to this more carefully. When I'm paying attention, I like it, but I tuning out, and next thing I know 5 tracks have gone by. So, I guess I'll give it 3 stars. I feel like it'll end up being a 4 after a few more listens, though.
I was ready to hate this as much as (or more than) I've hated everything else Brian Eno was involved. But dammit if this one wasn't actually good!
Love Eno and listen to his ambient stuff mire. This sounds like a good quality talking heads esq sound. A bit too many references to sausages, but enjoyable none the less
Cross between Talking Heads & Devo then his Mellow stuff.
This repetitive music with random warblings over the top is fine in small doses
Some great songs, some meh songs, 3/5 overall
Vähiten lempparit: laulut 1-5 Lempparit: kaikki sen jälkeen
I should’ve known I was in for something different than what I’d normally expect from Eno when I saw the ‘art rock’ tag. And that’s exactly what he delivers here. Not to discount the few instrumental tracks on here, Eno delivers an album that falls into line into the niche (but still widely circulated) genre of whimsical, silly British songs. Something I’m not a fan of at the best of times. In these whimsical ditties, Eno feels strangely at home - yet not fully grounded in that these songs leave a lot to be desired, with the exception of the brilliantly-delivered King’s Lead Hat. An interesting listen considering I’d only heard Eno’s ambient albums before this, and I’m certainly glad that that’s what he stuck to.
Good stuff but not as interesting as Eno's other albums which had that special experimental character without being too much. Compared to those, this album sounds just a bit too standard.
This was ok, but nothing that I'd ever want to actively listen to again.
shines brightest in the second half when he leans into the ambient stuff - which makes sense being Brian Eno. i think a full album of that would be a 4 but i was indifferent for most of the first half so we’ll go high 3
didnt quite finish. generally a vibe.
I really like this. I know how important Eno is, and it’s easy to understand why - not only based on this album. But there is so much on here, that I can hear has inspired other musicians
Sits somewhere between Talking Heads style New Wave/post-punk, King Crimson prog, the glam of Roxy Music and Bowie, and the spaced out trippy textural ambience of krautrock. Loads of amazing synth tones, propulsive rhythms, gentle melody. There's a mix of high-energy stuff and some very patient, languid, verging on ambient stuff. Favorites: Here he comes, King's Lead Hat, No One Receiving, By the River
Interesting but not really for me. 3
Meh. Probably suffering from too much Eno.
Eno's last rock album before his complete move to ambient and production. This was actually the first Brian Eno album I ever heard bandits good but doesn't blow me away like some of his other work, the songś are good and the album is probably worth a listen but there's a few Eno albums that are better already on the list so it's not essential.
Not as good as another green world
3.4 stars rounded down.
Do you DEEPLY like ambient soothing music? I wonder how many do? A little discovery for me. The transitional album (so calming). In context, this musical easter egg isn't going to do it for most people. Its obscure even for here. And I nearly gave up on it, before realising Side B is on an amazing - unexpected - five tracks that morph as an intro to his new style of Ambient music (and his whole next album).. His ambient work, for me, goes beyond a mere “5”. So, by tiny joyful coincidence, to get past the rock bit and “skip to the good stuff”, start at track 6 . a nice experience if you love his Ambient and are likely to recognise some signature elements. It's like going back to watch the lost pilot of your favourite tv series. Or you *could* skip his kind introduction to his new style over 5 tracks, and simply jump ahead to his next album. You want have had the transition. And so, for those of you, really DEEPLY interested, we’re going back. To hear a genius do something for the first time, and for me it “worked”... Set aside a full 25 mins; as ‘set and setting’ is needed for this album to do its work.Skip to tracks 6-10. the first emergence of ENO’s ambient. And he takes you gently in. Side B (track 6: “Here He Comes”) after the jumble of side A this is different for its musical coherence; all floral , pastoral and calm; and settles you right down. Let it take you there. Tracks 7-10: he deepens and softens and almost drops all vocals; the transition into delightful droning AMBIENT. Like a psychic massage table. He goes right past ‘New Age music’ - then his new magic keyboard is introduced as the vehicle for meditative, almost astral transport. [We’ll hear heaps of it on “Ambient 1 Music for airports”, on his next album]. [edit or side note: if you are NOT interest in curious like transition or ‘missing link’ albums, I totally get it, I wasn’t either, so for a FULL taste of a basically perfect ambient album, listen instead to Brian Eno’s NEXT album which is “ambient 1: music for airports” which is ultra soothing calming musical meditation and sounds like it was made in 2010 or 2020 but is from 1978. I know. Genius. And I need to say, there is no better album for listening to when jet lagged, commuting for work utterly exhausted on long haul, or even in bed sick needing music that will be as soothing as a warm bath. I don't know where to go after it, as he has produced so much. I need a curator to help] Ambient 1: is also music for sleeping. And why its so treasured. And not played at parties or on the radio. Thank you Mr Eno.
Experimental and ethereal. I feel like Eno does his best work with others, but his solo work is cool.
As per usual with Brian Eno - interesting stuff but not always in a good way
this was pretty good...the first half of the album reminded me a bit of early john cale/talking heads but less groovy in the sense that it was like...pretty goofy? in an incongruous way that grated on me a bit. i liked the second half of the album a lot more. his 'serious' lyrics are really very beautiful. fav tracks: king's lead hat, julie with..., by this river [absolute knockout song]
Bedre end den der hed noget med airports
Virkelig lækkert til tider, bliver måske også til tider lidt for formløst
I like this, I like the production The only issue is that it feels like 2 different albums that don't go together. Good but not perfect
Was worried this would be ambient Eno, but it's more like Talking Heads, which I enjoy. Overall though, it wasn't super memorable to me. I'd give it another listen though. 3.25/5
I like the instrumental tracks the most... some of the lyrics were a bit silly
Good album with some catchy tunes. Like the 60s/70s rock sound.
Um...OK. Two Brian Eno albums in a row? I don't know if we needed two of them from his rock era. If you like Warm Jets, you'll like this a lot, too. Same formula -- crazy production, slightly weird tunes, some catchy hooks here and there. But I don't think this would warrant inclusion over his later ambient stuff. (Of course, watch me pull Music for Airports next...) Unexpected bangers: Energy Fools the Magician, No One Receiving, By This River.
Good album. Melodramatic with pop forward melodies. Kinda like the cure meets talking heads.
Somewhat interesting.
I enjoyed it alright, parts of it really hit hard
Pretty decent. Liked parts, meh on a some.
mixed feelings on this one. some of it was quite well-constructed. some of it sounded like a better-funded acoustic version of what i'd make as a teenager in garageband during music lessons instead of actually listening to what i was meant to do. some sections were whatever the musical equivalent of a nonsequitur is. i do enjoy the construction/themes of the lyrics though
Wasn’t bad honestly. Songs were good but nothing overly special. 7/10
Its fine. Backwater was pretty good. Young boy should have stuck to rock and roll instead of going all ambient. Good to get these, roxy music, Eno, Genesis, Peter Gabriel are huge blind spots of mine, and lots of people seem to think they are important. Not convinced on Eno, but they're pretty fun albums so far.
Pensive and thoughtfully constructed, slow and sometimes ponderous. Poetic and arty. Not for me but will be loved by the depressed introspectives out there
I got a Brian Eno album a few weeks back and I absolutely hated it. Seeing this album was horrifying. I thought I would hate. Now I didn't like it either, but it wasn't as god awful as the last one.
aeiou
Sounds in places like Dark Side of the Moon I think…. I think Eno’s internal monologue was…. the Floyd are coining it in with the success of that album, I’d like a bit of the action…. then it took him writing a 100 songs, culling those down and 5 years later in 1977 his version appears…. And it’s good!
Mildly interesting, not the groundbreaking stuff of later on.
Very atmospheric, in a different setting this could be a 4 but I really enjoyed it
good instrumentals, interesting lyrics, pleasant listen
Sounds like Brian Eno.
This album takes you in different directions, blending upbeat art rock with mellow, experimental ambient tracks. Both styles are impressive, but I find myself drawn more to his ambient side. The art rock tracks, interestingly, have a Talking Heads vibe, but with a more electronic and experimental twist.
It’s fine. There’s nothing too special here.
Not as bad as I thought it would be. Quite accessible.
I find the second half of the album very beautiful.
I prefer Eno as a producer personally but I definitely enjoy moments of this one. The earlier rock-ish stuff is pretty good and the ambient stuff later is chill asf. Can't imagine I'll be coming back soon but glad I know a little more about a highly influential donnie in the music world. Fav songs: - Backwater - Here He Comes - By This River - Spider and I
I know what I'm playing to put my kid asleep when I have one
It was good, but maybe a bit forgettable for me
This reminds me of talking heads, the various genres were pretty good but it was confusing how the last 15 minutes were basically ballads. rip the drums 🥲
It's almost like funky music with Talking Heads vocals? Ohhhh the guy was a producer for Talking Heads, that makes sense. And now the second song sounds Beatles-y? Okay Kings Lead Hat (an anagram for Talking Heads) is VERY Talking Heads.
Experimental art-rock/pop. Eno's last "rock" release before diving further into the ambient & avant-garde genres (of which he is best known) which is emphasized in the notable differences in feel between side 1 (more rock-based) and side 2 (ambient/piano) "Backwater" - if Interpol was art-pop Nice to see Phil Collins lay down some drum grooves
Started off poorly, No One Receiving and, especially, Backwater were terrible. Tails to a non specific dirge in the middle section but becomes more appeasable to me with Julie With and then finishes strongly. Not his best, not his worst either.
This album is all over the place, and that isn’t a bad thing. That made for a very interesting listen that held your attention for the very short album. I don’t know if I’d go back to it anytime soon, but it was more enjoyable than a lot of other albums we’ve had.
This was ok. I can definitely see how this would have been pretty earth shattering and groundbreaking when it came out. There’s at least one track that sounds a lot like the talking heads that really slaps but for the most part I wasn’t really feeling it.
Apparently his last non-ambient album. Reminded me of his earlier album, "Here Come the Warm Jets".
It was pretty nice
There is a reason Brian Eno is the go-to-guy for so many artists when it comes to music production. He´s got a lot of musically talent. But he is lacking at least a remarkable voice for beeing a solo artist. Favourite: "Backwater", "Kurt´s Rejoinder", "King´s Lead Hat" 2,5
Solid listening very chill. 3.5
I was not really about this and then all of a sudden the last 3 tracks nad me hooked ridiculously. That was completely from left field and I wish thatthe rest of the album was like the ambiance of that
strong 3. would be a 4 but like the first half i did not mess with. like i really see the music in the first half but it is not me. i honestly thought this shit was boutta get a 2 but then like i dont even know what the fuck happened like we just switched vibes and the shit got so fire and mellow and beautiful makin me feel like im relaxing close to the rain but like its warm and i watch the end of sundown like cmon man why wasnt the whole album like this bruh cmon bruh. 1. Spider and I 2. Julie With 3. By This River
Brian Eno is to music what a Bay Leaf is to cooking. You don't exactly know what it is but it makes everything better. Our world is a better place because of Brian Eno. Examples found on this album such as Julie With… and By This River just make me feel… complete. 3.5/5
Liked it better than the Jets album. Eno is a weird one for me, I feel like I should enjoy his stuff more but a good portion never lands
Meh. Some of the tracks were like Talking Heads, which I don't especially love. I liked the second half a little more, especially the songs "Here He Comes" and "By This River". But overall the album was just middling.
I was anticipating bleepy bloopy soundscapes and was surprised by the immediate Talking Heads feel of the first song. But most of the rest of the album doesn't come near the opener. 'Backwater' sounds like an upbeat TV theme song about fishermen, the soundscape vibes I expected kick in with 'Energy Fools the Magician', and only 'King's Lead Hat' gives another Talking Heads feel before the bleep bloops kick back in in earnest. So, I guess...uneven?
I do see the art in it, but this doesn't resonate with me.
It's good.
Was going to rate it as 2, but, By this river deserves another star!
Before and After Science was a solo effort from Brian Eno in the late 70's. This sounds of the same mixture that made early Talking Heads - guitar and synthesizer driven art pop of the seventies. On some tracks, Eno's affinity for ambient comes through. These songs are not particularly melodic, and not as engaging as Eno's work with Roxy Music,
I'm not really a fan of the first few tracks. This is all just kind of too weird without much direction, in my opinion. It feels like something frog men would listen to. I don't know what that means exactly, but that's what it sounds like. After a few songs, it mellows out, and the avant guard-iness plays so much better in this low energy/slow tempos. I'm glad I didn't fully give up on it after the first half, because I ended up really enjoying the second half of the album.
This didn't stand out for me at all.
This is an interesting album, maybe even fascinating. Not just another bit of poppy fluff, or whatever was popular when it came out. There’s a weirdness here, a creativity that doesn’t care if you “get it”. Personally, I got it sometimes, but not all times…. The first 2 songs were my favorite, somewhat towards an XTC vibe…. Kinda. “Kings Lead Hat” is a little bit Talking Heads meet the Cars…. Sort of. There’s a good bit of stuff here that’s pretty “ambient”, which I guess it where Eno was trending at the time. That’s not so much to my liking. I may want to revisit some of this, but not all…. 3/5
I understand why the hype, but not my type of music
It was ok, felt like a wannabe talking heads early on but found it's way in the back half
Like it, or not, this artist is pretty unique in my opinion. It's not always my jam, but I can respect the talent and artistry. Fav tracks: Backwater, Energy Fools The Magician
The first track is a stinker however the album gets progressively better. Overall it's a bit slow for my liking but there was a lot I enjoyed here. Highlights: Backwater King's Lead Hat By This River Spider And I
Typical ambience
I appreciate that Brian Eno's music is really good, but I don't love it.
backwater energy fools the magician king's lead hat through hollow lands
The sound of the first track nearly blew this album for me. What an absolutely dire production, a terribly flaccid and uninspiring sound. The album is musically interesting but the lyrics are a bit naff and the whole thing lacks cohesion. I wonder if there's a better sounding remastered version?
The last couple of tracks were better and more Eno than the first ones imo
Never heard of Brian Eno before, but this is pretty wack.
This started strong but ended slow and repetitive imo.
Some of it I liked, some of it was a little slow. I understand how this guy could be such a prolific producer.
Perhaps "uncelebrated" for a reason, which would be its unevenness across two sides. First is pretty average, if frolicsome and clever, new-edgy pop very much of its time (very Talking Headsy, obvs) and the second all-ambient, a harbinger of what was to come, fruitfully, in the next decade. Just doesn't work as a whole, largely because Eno's neither a singer nor a frontman of much merit, which that genre and era required. "Here He Comes" is excellent and the dreamy bits triangulate between languour (to the point of entropy), loveliness and melancholy.
King's Lead Hat is cool, but Julie With is odd. With this being his last personal "rock" album, you can definetely hear Brian Eno start to want to just float away into ambient music.
interesting, experimental, and a little weird. strong bowie vibes at times.
suprising good, like the music a lot as a side effect
Grew on me as it went
Surprisingly funky. Way closer to Talking Heads than Music for Airports. It lost a little momentum towards the end and I lost a little interest. He’s not really a singer, is he? But fair play to laying it down and putting it out. Interesting, but not really all that enjoyable for me.
6 / 10 Rock instrumental de los 70, demasiado tirando hacia el Nene Age. Aburrido!
Unsure. Wanted to like it more than I did.
I listened to this up to "Julie" and after a day I couldn't remember a single song, the name of the album or even the artist. The music up to this point is so incredibly unremarkable, that I was seriously considering rating the album 1 star. Then I listened to "By This River". Oh boy. Still not the biggest fan of Brian Eno's voice, but this song is beautiful. Remarkable enough to make it worth listening to the whole album. The last songs blend into irrelevance again.
I enjoyed this one more than the last, but ultimately Brian Eno may just not be for me.
# Playlist track - Backwater # Notes - Weird, in a nice way. - Didn't like "Julie With"
I thought it was alright! Nothing that particularly stood out to me and I've heard great things about him but I think they were lost on me
If you look at Brian on Spotify the top track is this lovely ambient minimalist piece. If you pop this album on the contrast is quite stark. The first half of the album wouldn’t have surprised me if he started singing about Magical Trevor or Badgers. The we get to Julie With (which is brilliant) and from then on it all makes sense.
What the fuck is happening?
Liked side 2 more, more like the ambient Eno that I was hoping this would be, but when it looped round again I liked side 1 more the second time round.
Worth a listen, so long as you don't mind falling into a pit of depression the likes of which you have never felt before where you can only pray for the numbness of public transport and bestsellers from charity shop book shelves.
Average album, but a nice atmosphere, slightly bleak and ominous at times. Otherwise, forgettable.
I can see these songs perfectly fitting a soundtrack for the right movie but not putting on the stereo for a home jam.
It was ok.
Favourites- kings lead hat, blackwater. 3 stars
👍🏻
Cool album I will probably never listen to again
This album is a look into Brian Eno's world. It's equal parts psychedelic and dreamy that allows you to float in and out of consciousness. I can definitely see why Eno would have described this album as ocean music. Best: No One Receiving Worst: Energy Fools the Magician
Sounded like a bad ska band trying to make a talking heads album. I didn’t really “get” it but know that Eno is super influential to others
70’er art rock, ambient, lidt op og ned
I had a love hate relationship with this album. The tracks were all so different, I didn't know which way to turn.
Interessante Platte aus den 70er. Ein bisschen Wave, ein bisschen Rock und der Retrosound der 70er. Leider ist die Platte aber auch phasenweise sehr düster und lässt ein herausragenden Song vermissen.
Better than expected
No One Receiving - Is this ambient music? I might be learning something. I've never been able to get into Eno despite having a huge love for the talking heads. Lets see where this goes. Julie With, more what I think of when I think ambient. I definitely enjoy some of these songs. I'm not sure Ill be actively listening to Eno anytime, but its nice stuff to have on in the background. This album is a little too inconsistent in sound tho. As soon as it lulls me into a mood, it changes too abruptly.
I’ve been a fan of his producing but never listened to his individual albums now nice work
Ei tää ollutkaan ambienttia. Ambient olis ollut parempaa, mutta tää kyllä parani loppua kohti. Alkupää aika elektronista poppia, mutta lopussa enemmän ambient. Parhaat: Loppupuoli
I’ve heard his name mentioned many times but I couldn’t tell you anything he has specifically been involved with before listening to this. The first half certainly had some interesting sounds and lyrics. Not the greatest voice though. Second half is slow and a bit on the boring side. I think I’d listen to it again, at least the first half.
“Outer space dance music for earthbound freaks” eh? We’ll see. Makes me think of Oingo Boingo but I like them more. I could see myself listening to this album again, for sure. Especially if I was really really high. But I don’t want to listen to any one particular song again by itself or even shuffled in with other stuff on my Spotify playlist. Songs added to Spotify: 0
I always enjoy Brian Eno more than I expect, and this was really nice. Quite spaced out.
Afang mit No One Receiving isch irgendwie chli weird gsi aber denn Backwater isch defür scho recht groovy! Kurts Rejoinder isch defür wieder recht schräg. Ich ha s gfühl s Album isch würklich chli es up and down vo guete und schlechte songs (sind au zum teil recht unterschiedlich ih mine Auge). Uf de Songtext hani jetzt nid so gachtet drum kei ahnig ob das no e tüüferi meaning dehinter het aber ja. All in all 3.4/5 in my opinion.
Hey has voll oke gfunde! Hett mich jetz ned wow‘d aber ha immer wieder moment gha woni gfunde ha mol eig cute oder oh das isch cool, aber halt ned gnueg zum mich begeistere i guess?
no one receiving. sehr speziell aber finds recht geil. aso speziell = nöd pop well grüsch und verspielt. phil collins ade drums cool. Backwater. Bass mega präsent und die verstimmte synths sind geil. drums isch de glich guy wie bim holger czukay, und er macht au gnau s glich. find de song easy geil. Kurt's Rejoinder. fuuunny geräuscher-Bass. Energy Fools the Magician. guete titel. oke meh en instrumentale interlude aber bass sehr cool. king's lead hat. talking heads anagramm time. geil. es isch au sehr talking heads. schrägs klavier. uuuuh yes mega chorus gitarre! fuck ich bin echt musigkritiker finds huere geil. here he comes. do chunt ihm. oh bitz köntry?? aber mit sochli tango rhythmus wie beschribi da? finds hypnotisch zücht eim irgendwie ine. julie with. ok etz wirds spaciger. aber huere schöö mitem rhodes und so. uuuh schöns lick. by this river. seehr mellow hübschi melodie. synth sehr analog und so. through hollow lands. ok passiert nöd viel etz ischer de ambient brian eno. Spider and I. espiderman. sehr pretty aber s fühlt sich sochli ah dass de uptempo afang vom album de mellow stuff rechtfertigt. findi aber en faire move.
BRIAN EMO also ich hans am ahfang gar nöd usghalte, hans RICHTIG langwilig gfunde (flughafe musig lässt grüssen) aaaber ungefähr ab de hälfti sind entweder d lieder besser worde oder ich han mich draa gwöhnt, uf jede fall hanis nöd easy schöni und beruhigendi musig gfunde. here he comes isch für mich sochli ussegstoche, au wenns sochli es lied isch wo sochli silly würkt? aber hans sehr gnosse eig
Probably very innovative for the time but not quite for me.
This sounds like a mishmash of all the bands that Eno produced from the 70s-early 80s. Not bad - but would prefer to listen to the original bands.
I liked it, I am not overly familiar with Eno’s catalogue but I had heard enough about him that I was looking forward to the listen. Started strong with good energy and the second half slowed the pace quite a bit, not bad but I guess I expected a bit more punch. 3 stars
trippy
"Before and After Science" by Brian Eno, released in 1977, is a sonic journey through experimental landscapes that blur the lines between ambient, rock, and electronic music. Eno, a pioneer in ambient soundscapes, showcases his diverse musical influences and avant-garde sensibilities. The album seamlessly weaves together ethereal instrumentals like "By This River" with more rhythmic and structured tracks such as "King's Lead Hat." Eno's use of electronic textures and unconventional song structures creates an immersive and innovative listening experience. "Before and After Science" is a testament to Eno's ability to push the boundaries of conventional music. While it may not be immediately accessible to mainstream audiences, its influence on the ambient and experimental genres is undeniable. I give this album a 3/5 for the intriguing background music
Not bad but it’s not my thing. Spider and I was the only track I found compelling. Eno is good to have on in the background but the sound gets old to me after a bit.
I clearly hear both Talking Heads and David Bowie in this. Must have been mutually reinforcing given the influence Eno had on both of those artists. The record itself is fine. Nothing jumps out as really special.
Not something I would return to but pretty interesting stuff here. The first song sounds like it was inspired by "Tomorrow Never Knows".
This was hit or miss for me, though I appreciate the variety. Funky, psychedelic and just plain out there. Stand out tracks: King's Lead Hat, Here He Comes, By This River
Pretty good. Let’s come back to this and listen some more.
I like Eno's instrumentals that's for sure. The slower, the calmer his music is the better.
I felt like this was an incredibly talented and artistic man trying to fit into a box. Good but not exceptional.
Started very 70s then went wafty. No specific impact
Enjoyable, but not amazing.
Prefer his ambient stuff tbh
Pop experimental. Ni fu ni fa.
Top tracks No one receiving Kurt rejoinder Energy fuels the magician Through hollow lands
There are a few tracks i enjoyed. My favorite is an instrumental one called Through Hollow Lands. It doesn't sound like 1977. The version I listened to on YouTube music was a 2004 remaster. Sounds more like 2004.
This was all over the place, but kept me interested for the most part (dragged at the end). Rating 3.
It's fine.
3.5
It's a lot of Brian Eno. But it is good background music.
Really enjoyed the instrumentals but didn't care for Eno's voice. High point on the record is By The River.
Interesting and felt like maybe a music theory major would love this. I found it enjoyable but not something I’d return to.
Brian Eno is an artist I started exploring recently, and his discography is a bit intimidating. He has made a lot of music, and it all seems to be very dense. He's clearly an incredible talent, having produced music for some of my favorite acts, like Bowie and Talking Heads. However, I've found Eno's own music to be hit or miss. And I haven't yet come across an album that's easy to listen to. It demands engagement. Although not a personal favorite of mine, this album feels as prescient as any of his 70s albums. For example, it almost seems as if the song King's Lead Hat spawned Devo, who dropped their first album a year later. Based on the other albums I've heard from him, I'd say this is a weaker one, but apparently this is one of his classics. I feel like it would take me ten years of listening to his albums to have an informed opinion about his music.
Splish Splash I was raking in the cash. Might be one of the greatest lines of all time. Funny that science is mentioned in this title because this album felt a lot like Weird Science and that sort of 80's vibe, which looking at this as 77 seems a little ahead of its time.
I liked the peppy stuff. Not so much the slow stuff.
This was fun and Eno-ish. I dunno if I’d call anything in this album life-changing but I think it’s cool that the track King’s Lead Hat is a purposeful anagram of Talking Heads, who Eno was working closely with at the time.
I knew of Brian Eno but wasn't too familiar. I can definitely see myself returning to this often
Awesome instrumentals (many a times even ambient) with nice vocals. Fav tracks :- 2) Backwater - idk what it is, but i like it. nice instrumentals 5) King's Lead Hat - Groovy daft punk-esque pop rock and electronica. 6) Here He Comes- Pretty guitar ballad. (similar to here comes the sun) 8) By This River - soothing sad piano song, rest all songs after this are ambient. I was suprised by how much I thoroughly enjoyed this album, and is a great piece from start to finish.
A varied but largely enjoyable album which I went into with no preconceptions having not knowingly sought out Brian Eno before in the past. It's definitely of a time, but pleasant enough for repeated listens despite no song really grabbing my attention and compelling me to add to my favourites
Cool futuristic sound, made with hollow spacy beats and synthesized sounds. Can feel the Beatles and David Bowie influences in some of the more upbeat direct songs.
bass is killer
Kinda meh, didn't really do much for me but it wasn't difficult to listen to by any means
Strange but beautiful moments.
So this is midpoint if it was only 1001 long (I know it’s not). Maybe I’m feeling fatigue or maybe not but I feel on a run of ok but not great records.
i liked it but kinda basic
Herkkä ja hieno! Eno on ennalta hieman tuntematon 3/3
Better than I thought it would be.
Didn't mind the music, though 80's is not my fav sound. His voice is not to my taste. It contrasts in a not good way with the melody.
Really enjoyed this one without any expectations!
No really my thing
Good but there are better Eno albums out there
A better Eno effort than the last few I’ve received - gets quite spry on uptempo tracks like ‘Lead Hat,’ wish we could see more of that Eno on the list than the ambient snoozers of late.
When I first pulled up today's album, I was not enthusiastic about it. I had a Brian Eno record last week (Here Come the Warm Jets) and it was absolute garbage. No redeeming qualities at all. From that, I drew the assumption that this would be the same. I was wrong. Although not my favorite album of all time, at least this one had basic song structure, and a musical direction. I actually didn't suffer listening to this album. Honestly, when the album started with the weird song No One Receiving, I thought I was doomed, but that was immediately followed by Backwater, which is a basic art rock song. The whole record kind of then settled into that art rock/psychadelica genre with the odd weird song scattered throughout. I don't mind an odd song here and there throughout an album, but when the whole thing is fucked, I just can't take it. A few songs (moreso on side 2) were completely instrumental, and kind of fit together into a sort of mini epic (the last 3 songs on the record). Overall, an experimental album, but one more strongly rooted in traditional musical themes. For that I am thankful. Nothing jaw dropping, but a fairly average album. Favourite songs: King's Lead Hat, Backwater Least favourite songs: No One Receiving, Kurt's Rejoinder 3/5
Starts off sounding like Eno took the Station To Station tapes and added his vocal! I really thought I’d accidentally put on Stay! No problems copying his Bowie work, pity his vocals are not as exciting. Second half is into Eno’s ambient project - a but dull for my taste. A low three since two would be extremely harsh given the musicality.
Quirky music that my brain quickly decided was background music, and the album slid by while I thought about other things. Not bad, just not particularly good. Smack bang on a 3/5.
Everyone knows Brian Eno's music. Some have listened to the windows 95 song thousands of times. Do I get to rate that now? Or is this only for this album? Ugh. So tough. Some good tunes here. But most are less engaging.
Energy Fools The Magician, King’s Lead Hat, Here He Comes, Julie With, By The River, Through Hollow Lands, 3.5/5
3+
I liked this a lot. This surprised me. I’d certainly listen again.
i guess technically interesting but its alright as a album to listen to
Good album, was expecting a full on Ambient album but there are some good rock tunes on it.
What does Brian Eno eat for breakfast? Pork chops.
Zal hier nooit helemaal aan wennen, maar dit was best sfeervol
Was hyped to see Eno on the list... Can't remember if we've had him or not. Have to say at first I was finding it quite jarring and then became more my bag. There's just so much Eno I guess you can't love it all
I liked it, was nice background music, so cool experimental stuff but nothing I'd come back to
litt spess ass
okay, not really memorable to be honest
Need to give it another listen
Not sure what I was expecting from this, but I was not grippered immediately.. I think it's a bit out there for the sake of being out there. A strutting catwalk of musical showboating.
I liked the slower, quieter songs. Some of these were very relaxing!
A cacophony of sounds, textures, moods and feelings. Quite abstract which doesn’t work all the time but there are some moments of quality that shine. Can definitely hear Talking Heads, Devo, David Bowie and Trent Reznor in this album. King Lead’s Hat and Spider and I are highlights.
Oivaa musisointia.. Brian eno.. Avantgarde on... hienoa.. Työtä respekti... Eka puolisko en vittu ymmärrä niin rasittavaa... Toka puolisko upeaa...
I always love about half of most Eno albums. Kings Lead Hat is a great stomp, and the touches of Young Americans and his interest in Talking Heads and the US new wave scene generally work well here. It's the quirkier English eccentric stuff that I find slightly less convincing. Although I am sure those ideas got recycled later on and worked better after a tryout here. Eno is a genius in my book, but his song-based albums are always a mix of miss and hit for me.
Eno always interests me. You're always going to get something interesting from him. It's not always what you want, but he's not afraid to experiment. This is really dreamy in places, without straying into hippy shit territory. Here He Comes is gorgeous.
Getting a few middle of the road ones lately, another one to not write home about
This is the fourth!! Brian Eno album on this list and the other three I heavily criticized and disliked. I did not enjoy the experimental nature of his music. I was a bit pessimistic going in to listening to another of his albums, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much more I enjoyed this one. I think with another listen or two, I would possibly even upgrade this to a 4/5. This one was much better, Brian Eno.
I know Brian Eno mostly from his Ambient projects, which are some of my favourite (and Roxy Music of course). This album was a refreshing change from the other versions of Eno. It felt very experimental, while still maintaining an enjoyable listening quality that I would definitely go back to and explore further. Nothing particularly stood out to me to elevate this album above the pack, but I still enjoyed the listen. Fav Tracks: Backwater, King's Lead Hat, Julie With
Unimpressed
S'écoute bien, un style unique mais familier à la fois. Art pop selon wikipedia. Vaudrait la peine d'essayer plus de son catalogue.
Based on my distaste for Roxy Music thusfar, I didn't think I was going to like this at all, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised. I definitely can see myself revisiting this one at some future date. It had a unique je ne sais quoi. Standouts: No One Receiving, King's Lead Hat, Here He Comes, By This River
Surprisingly pleasant, YouTube put Prince up next which was much better.
This is one of those albums in this list I would never have listened to without it. I think it's also one of those albums that if I'd found at a certain time in my life I'd know it really well. Love the fretless bass, enjoy the discordant bits and amused by Phil Collins playing drums.
3/10, 30%
Not really feeling it the first couple of tracks. Album sounds well produced but it's a bit too experimental for me. 3/5
Another Brian Eno album. Again it's fine. Nothing mind blowing, nothing special. Average.
Knepigt. Allra bäst är han ju med tyskar. Trots allt Eno men inte Cluster eller Harmonia.
Inte min sorts Brian Eno. Men 3/5 för att det trots allt ÄR Brian Eno
Har inte lyssnat på denna innan. Bra skiva!
worth another listen - I suspect these grow on you
Meh, pretty boring, middle of the road, pop/rock Nothing to write home about (or listen to again)
Not convinced this list was actually prepared by Eno
Nothing groundbreaking or big standouts here for me. I've definitely heard other songs by Brian Eno that were more interesting than anything on this album. I did save these songs: Kurt's Rejoinder, King's Lead Hat
T3B 1. Backwater 2. Energy Fools The Magician 3. Through Hallowed Lands Pretty interesting listen. 3.
We know what Brian Eno does now, it either really appeals or it just sits there as you go about your day doing other stuff. And that's fine, to have a floor where it's not annoyingly bad is a pretty hard thing to do, but let's not pretend Before And After Science and other stuff is transcendent or really and truly enjoyable. It just is, it's 2/5 or 3/5 depending on the day you're having and I think this gets to a 3, just. Maybe a 2 tomorrow.
