Comme Portishead, mais en moins bien
It's mostly a slow synth poppy record. It's not really my wheelhouse. It was OK. I didn't hate it and I didn't love it.
I kind of do like triphop and I kind of do like tricky Tricky, and I have listened to several of his albums at school, but I think I like those other albums more,
3.2 some fairly average trip-hop, with some decent rock elements. At one point I was thinking these were a Portishead rip-off, and then low and behold, a Portishead sample appears. Enjoyed the Black Steel cover although it did drag on a bit at the end, which I think epitomises the album really. Pleasant listen, but not really sure it added much to music. Can't fully see the reason for it's inclusion.
Hey! I just listened to this for the first time a month ago after doing a deep dive on trip hop. Love the head bobbing Aftermath. Whispering flute, twangy guitar, echoing vocals, just a great overall vibe. Hell Around The Corner is good, using that same Isaac Hayes sample that Portishead uses. I think the bleakness on this may be appealing to some, it’s not especially my bag. If I was in the mood for some Trip Hop I’d reach for Massive Attack or Portishead before ever getting to Tricky unfortunately. I’m glad I listened to this album but I probably won’t be coming back for another spin.
Decent enough background noise
This one starts promising, but as with many trip-hop records, it melts into nothing by the end. It's still better than most of its contemporaries, and Tricky has a lyrical style that touches on all sorts of other topics beyond just brooding club music. It ain't great but it's definitely not terrible either.
The lead singer has a nice voice, the mix of genres and sounds, in some of the tracks from cacophony to a real track is trippy. It’s different and not in a bad way.
cool sound but not my thing
trippy cool
My rating 3.4 This was quite enjoyable
you could line up all the British electronica groups we've had on this list and I would struggle to tell them apart. Its so goofy how similar sounding they are despite trying to be so differen. Its not terrible or anything, just more of the same soft spoken vocals against industrial machinery noise. The French and Swedish got you guys beat in the genre.
Oh wow a British downtempo electronic album with basically the same female vocalist who does all the British downtempo electronic albums. How original! I’m so glad we didn’t have a dozen albums on the list before this that sound exactly the same! Oh and it’s got jungle rhythms too?!? I’ve never heard a British album that does that either! In other words, it’s fine but just listen to Massive Attack instead right?
Not really my thing
This album was close to bringing me in, but never could. A whole album of this isn't amazing, but a song here and there is fine. The genre has potential. Didn't hate it, but I wanted it to be over.
An interesting album where I can hear the influences that it had on other albums. Overall while interesting is not one I can see really coming back to.
3.5
Alternative Massive Attack like not bad but eh. kinda cool, the artistry is there. I just wont listen to it again..... this is making me realize some of my previous 3s should be 2s but oh well
Trip hop, experimental, electronic, R&B, dub, post-rock, British hip hop, sampledelia.
A chill listen and I enjoyed it, but nothing really stuck out and some songs felt overly long.
I generally like these kinds of sounds, especially as background working music but this was a bit of a drag. I am struggling to understand the foundations this laid? Could have been worse, that's for sure.
Sounds like this is from a member of Massive Attack, and just like their albums in the project it started as something I thought I’d like but quickly became background music. Not mich to say since this was somewhat ignored
This album feels tense, ominous, anxious and bleak. I usually love trip-hop, but I didn’t connect with this album at all.
Man this could be on a modern FIFA. Impressively ahead of its time.
Not that interesting, but a couple of bangers.
This was a cool album. Wasn’t quite sure where they were about to take me with it especially when the woman was saying she was a black man. But they landed the plane!
It's good and chill, Martina's vocals > Tricky's, but it's not like anything really stuck with me from it.
This felt moodier when comparing to the Massive Attack albums on this list. Maybe a tad stranger too. The vocalist was pretty good in setting the mood and adding another dimension to things, though.
Strangely hypnotic and weird. Would listen too again
Pretty interesting. Reminded me of Portishead. Not something I'd come back to, but it was pretty enjoyable.
Another album that came out the year I was born, so I’m always going to be a bit biased when it comes to that. I’ve never heard of Tricky before, but he’s fine at best. I greatly enjoyed listening to Martina Topley-Bird over him though, and that’s a fact. She does the whole breathy thing where after every couple of words you can hear her exhale. For a ton of singers I’ve heard so far, it never really sounds great. But, and I don’t know why, I think it’s actually pretty cool when she does it here. Nothing to add to the daily playlist here, but by far my favorite song on this one was “Black Steel”. Cool steel drums, great singing, killer hook, and a few sections where the song breaks off into actual Rock. This album is listed as experimental, and that’s for sure an apt depiction. The way they blend Hip Hop with Electronica is pretty interesting, and there’s some added Rock/Pop aspects that work for the most part. Some of the reviews are comparing this to the Gorillaz, and I actually disagree with that. Gorillaz is substantially more oriented on the Hip Hop aspect. While this has that as well, it’s not really the focus. Unfortunately, I think that’s for good reason. While I love Martina and could listen to her all day, Tricky is my least favorite part of his own album. He’s fine, but not exactly my cup of tea. I just don’t like his voice at all. Would give this a 2 if it wasn’t for Martina. Luckily, she’s the lead singer on a good bit of these songs, making the nearly hour long album much more bearable. Coincidentally, the big hit on this one, “Hell Is Round The Corner”, is my least favorite song on the album and it’s not even close. Tricky leads the singing on that one, doesn’t sound great, uses a filter to make himself sound fuzzy, and edits in a series of intentional crackling noises that last the entire duration of the song that I actually hate. I’m sure that song is his most popular for a reason, I just can’t figure out why though. This is another album that just kind of fades into the background for better and for worse. It works best when I’m not really paying attention to it. That’s both a positive and a negative. Songs like “You Don’t” are great when I’m trying to work and I can just vibe. On pure vibes alone this album is a 5. In general though, it’s on the lower end of 3.
it started really strong and kind of fell off for me at the end
Massive Attack was yesterday so that's a lot of trip hop but this interesting and good.
Aaah! This weekend I was thinking, “hmmm, I bet Tricky is here at least a few times; wonder when he’ll pop up.” And here we are.
I had forgotten this one. Not my everyday vibe, but certainly a good listen at the right time.
A departure from the Massive Attack sound, Tricky makes a personal record with an eerie feeling. A few songs are heavier than others, but everything feels true and raw. Cool album.
Oh, Maxinquaye has quite the different sound. I really enjoyed the spoopy, mysterious vibes, and I like when an album has a consistent sound without being repetitive or boring. This kind of trip hop is hard to put in a box because of the samples used from a variety of sources. The album was so different that I couldn't predict where it would go musically. Anyway, the artist's name has me singing "It's Tricky" by Run D.M.C. all day.
This is the kind of trip hop that I can get behind! This album definitely has some alt rock/pop tendencies, which I think help keep it from being as stale as other trip hop albums of the 90s sometimes feel.
The blending of genres like techno, sub-bass, rap, and soul here was enjoyable enough. I wasn't really captivated by anything, however, and it sort of just washed over me.
I liked this more than I expected to. I’ve always dipped into trip‑hop here and there — a bit of Massive Attack, a bit of Portishead — but somehow never got around to Tricky. Maxinquaye feels like the grittier, sleep‑deprived cousin to those acts: darker, smokier, and way more claustrophobic in a good way. What surprised me most was how textured everything is. Even listening in the car and then on my desktop at work, I kept catching odd little sounds and whispered vocals that felt like they were half‑buried on purpose. It’s got that woozy, late‑night vibe that rewards proper attention, not just casual background listening. I definitely want to revisit it with headphones. It feels like the sort of album where all the detail lives in the corners, and I’m sure I missed loads with road noise and office distractions. But first impression: really intriguing, very atmospheric, and a lot more accessible than I thought Tricky might be.
Este disco refuerza mi teoría de que el universo del trip hop lo conforman como 20 músicos
This was okay. It had some really interesting beats going on, and a chill vibe. I didn't love the rap, but did like the vocals.
Not bad, I mostly enjoyed the album. Good vocalists throughout. Good beats. Probably not something I would revisit, but it was ok to have in it the background.
This is a weird one, and I have to keep reminding myself that it's from 1994, and the reason it sounds so much like a lot of things from the mid-200s is that it clearly inspired and influenced it. All in all, I think I'm here for it? It's just a bit too engaging and out there to be truly background coffee shop noise, but it's not really listenable or "easy" enough to be truly enjoyable. I think it just truly lives in that trip-hop, trance, chill electronica space that it was clearly designed for. I do also really appreciate the variety of flavors going on here, all the way from jazz flute to reggae to noir film score. A few tracks were giving me strong Dune and 300 vibes.
Weird, but interesting.
Honestly, I could just listen to Black Steel twelve times in a row.
While not the best album, I do think that Maxinquaye does something unique in its usage of music. It is very atmospheric, yet sadly borders on boredom in a couple of places. I understand that songs like Black Steel and Strugglin' purposefully repeat the same lines of text but that doesn't alleviate my problems with their style. Overall, I see the vision but it wasn't my thing. Best songs are Overcome and Brand New You're Retro. 6/10, a bit more variety wouldn't hurt.
Nice vibe, s few good tracks.
Low tempo, lo-fi trip hop. The sound is certainly a little dated, but still novel and interesting. No stand-out tracks for me as it all sounds very similar, but a good listen nonetheless.
Its fine but yeah that a no from me dawg
I do love her voice, and there's some interesting stuff here, but a lot of it made me think of Portishead or PJ Harvey in a "this makes me want to listen to Portishead or PJ Harvey" kind of way rather than wanting to stay with it.
Liked it
Cool, loungy, sexy trip-hop. One of those albums that casts a specific vibe and lingers in it for the whole album. The vocals from Martina Topley-Bird are very nice too. Nice choice to collaborate with one singer across the entire album.
Cool vibey album. I loved the third song, "Black Steel" where it broke out. At this point of the record I was really really wanting some kind of increase in tone or some injection of energy and this definitely brought it. I'm just realizing that I may have been accidentally listening to this album on shuffle so I may have gotten a bunch of lower energy songs all at once.. It's a middling 3/5 for me. Didn't dislike it, didn't love it. I went on a bit of a thinkin' tangent while I listened to this album. 5 out of the last 10 albums on this list have been from the 90's, and my rotation is in the "beyond 1001 albums" extension now, so I wonder if they go through decades and add ones that they missed? It got me thinking about the 2020 decade, and how this list somehow only has 4 albums from. We're now technically in the back half of the decade already! I wonder what would get added? There's been some great ones.
Really not sure what to make of this whole thing. I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t this. Very moody, very grungy, gritty, and it’s grown on me. The atmosphere! I got sucked in when ‘Hell is Around the Corner’ kicked on, it samples a similar bit of music to Portishead. Which weirdly also is reminding me of Lupe Fiascos ‘Daydreamin’ which puts it in good company. The mix of Tricky and Martina Topley-Bird is really working on this album, it’s enthralling.
Overraskende godt med undtagelse af nogle få numre.
I enjoyed this quite a bit more than expected. Maybe it was my mood, but the chill beats and smooth delivery hit just right. The uptempo songs like Black Steel were legit good. Couple filler songs i could do without, but overall a solid album. Another happy discovery. Trip hop, who would have guessed.
There’s definitely something to the British darker, dirtier and more pessimistic take on hip hop. It’s an uncomfortable difficult listen but that’s the point I think. Think it was well worth a listen, not sure I would revisit quickly but glad heard it. 3 Star
Rating: 6/10
Trip hop is music that I feel like I should enjoy but never do. Whoever is singing here has a nice voice. Glad I listened to it, wouldn't want to listen to it again. Immediately forgettable.
Interesting album, don't love don't hate. 5.4/10
Fine, kinda different trip hop
Okay this is interesting. She's whispering in my ear. This feels evil. I feel like I'm being seduced to the dark side. I don't really know what to do with this. Lotta noises going on. I really just don't know how to react. I don't know if I like this. I feel threatened. This is cool. No I'm definitely into whatever this is tbh. Favourite: Hell Is Round The Corner Least favourite: Ponderosa
At least a bit unique in the beats and feel.
This always felt like music to sit in a dark room and get stoned to. Never really got it back in the 90s, but I can appreciate it a lot more lyrically now
6/10
Not as dreamy as Portishead, and more jumpy than Massive Attack. This is dark and urgent trip hop, with the vaguest hint of menace.
This is really interesting right off the bat. Listening to this, I can hear that he brought a lot to Massive Attack's music. It's interesting to hear his music without any of the other MA elements accompanying.
Being jumpscared by the same sample as Glory Box on this was a surprise. Some cool stuff on this, some of which definitely escapes the confines of the ‘trip hop’ label (Black Steel a personal fav). Falls off a bit in the 2nd half, and I don’t think some songs justify their length like other trip-hop albums I’ve heard.
Another album where I can see why it was included, but it’s just not for me unfortunately… I like the vibes, but some of the lyrics made me slightly uncomfortable too Perhaps a re-listen might make me appreciate it more, but this is my rating for now 5.5/10
Never heard of this before but I thought it was enjoyable
Though there's some cool songs on here, I feel this is an example of where less would have been more.
Solid trip hop, it was enjoyable overall. A bit long but it’s good stuff, hard to enjoy in one setting. 3 stars
Funky and vibey. Lots of guitar solo potential
It's funny, when I listen to it, I think I really like it. It's right up my alley. But then after I'm done listening to it, I don't remember liking it and couldn't tell you what I like. Somehow, even though this should be a thing I really love, it just doesn't make an impression that stays with me after I'm done listening. I've listened to it twice and had the same experience both times. I'll have to try again and see if it keeps happening and if I can figure out why!
Uh
I didn't care about yhe vovals but the instrumental was quite nice
This album was a complete unknown to me and I'm not usually seeking this sort of music out, but I thought it was pretty good. The production is really impressive throughout. Who says chaps from Bristol can't make trip hop? Not me....
Some of the stuff on here is really solid trip hop stuff. Great underground sound, dark & moody but pretty groovy. Martina Topley-Bird's vocals are great, very Portishead adjacent (hell, the beat from Dummy is lifted outright) but sometimes Tricky's cheesiness gets to be a bit much. Trip hop has to be pretty careful to maintain its tone and I don't think Maxinquaye is doing anything that Massive Attack or Portishead weren't doing better. Except maybe Black Steel which is doing some stuff that Goldfrapp would steal a decade later lol Favorite Tracks: Black Steel, Hell is Around the Corner, Aftermath, Brand New You're Retro
Starts stronger than it finishes, but not to the level of contemporary Massive Attack et al.
I just had this recommended to me last week.. I left a bit confused but it was cool
pretty strange stuff but also interesting and banksy adjacent
I don't personally feel like it's anything special, but it's cool and atmospheric.
Pretty cool album, definitely cooler than me. Might be a 3.5
No private session used for Spotify. I have heard "Black Steel" before, not just the original, but this version and knew of Tricky's lineage and the whole British hip hop/electronic thing. I could get into this.
First album of 2026. Something of a dreamy start to the album, and therefore the year. Hell Is Round The Corner stands out sonically, Abbaon Fat Tracks stands out for different reasons (glad I was wearing headphones). Another perfectly fine album, but doesn't blow me away.
Actually thought this was pretty cool.
Love
Litt alternativ 90 tallsmusikk. Ja hvorfor ikke. Ikke helt min greier, men bedre enn mye annet fra 90!
Not by usual type of listen, but enjoyed - nice rhythms and beats - quite a calm relaxing listen really
Yep, it's good. I like a Black Steel, cover of Black Steel in The Hour Of Chaos by Public Enemy. It was unexpected to hear the same sample in Hell Is Round The Corner as in Glory Box by Portishead. Or a sample from Michael Jackson in Brand New You're Retro. Otherwise, the album is kinda plain, but I still like it, maybe I'll relisten to some tracks later because there's potential for my ears. 3/5 —————————————— Liked: — Black Steel — Hell Is Round The Corner
I was not expecting much from this, but it was surprisingly enjoyable. I always thought I like hip-hop but this project has shown that to not be true, I just like some hip-hop tracks. Give me some trip-hop, though, and I’ll enjoy it. Not massively, but enough for it to get a solid 3.
Fand ich gut. Mal was Neues aber nichts auf dauerschleife
I went in ready to be mad at more 90s electronica, but was pleasantly surprised when I got to “Black Steel.” This album manages to use its production style to support some good songs, not just relying on technology to make a bad song sound interesting. I also really enjoyed the Isaac Hayes sample, making this feel like it is on the edges of genres, not comfortably sitting in familiar territory. There were certainly a lot of songs I didn’t enjoy on this album, but I’m rounding up to a 3 because it managed to pull me away from my preconceptions.
It was ambient, Portishedish music. I played BYC with a friend a relatively enjoyed myself while listening. Possibly more because of the cricket, I didn't take away a lot from Tricky. 3 stars.
You and your friends are going to a newly opened cafe which has received rave reviews on Instagram from social influencer food critics who seem to be sponsored on every second post. The cafe is busy and the prices are high, but the barista is wearing a denim apron which is covering a black t-shirt which has rolled up sleeves, exposing the guy’s random assortment of tattoos. You can’t make out all the tatts, but you see a knife, a crucifix, Wartortle, a car that looks like a Chevy Impala, and an 80’s cartoon-style woman with no top on. The barista also has a high-folded beanie on, so you’re confident this coffee is gonna be bomb as fuck. It costs $8.15, and you end up waiting 55 minutes between ordering and receiving your drink. You’re pretty sure you heard a Nespresso machine at one point, but you’re not certain.
Heard this many times in my youth, a classic from the trip-hop era - my least favourite out of the big 3 though, too lethargic.
Correcto
i liked the vibes but otherwise i didn’t finish this
Ethereal and moody. Liked this more than I thought I would.
I think at some point when I've got a day to kill, I need to sit down and listen to this again, along with all the other trip hop stuff we've had, because in a blind taste test, I cannot tell the difference between this album, the Massive Attack album we already got (which, fair), and the Red Snapper album we already got. Nor can I tell the difference between any individual track on any of these three albums. I know Portishead is coming and I won't be able to tell the difference there either. God help me.
there's a lot of cool beats on here but not much else to keep me interested
It was chill. I kind of liked it.
I enjoyed it, but not enough to remember it a few days later
Cool album, very timely
I like trip hop and I like Tricky in Massive Attack, but this is just kind of there. Probably one I'd have liked better if I'd heard it at the time. Did make me want to listen to It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, though.
Love the samples of others famous work, amazing lyrics. Have to be in the right mood for it though.
Good stuff. First time encounter.
Cool music triphop
Good album! Enjoyed this one.
Interesting almost tribal beats and female vocals that sound like someone I can't quite place. Ponderosa is good. Most songs have a mysterious vibe. Pumpkin is good. Abbaon Fat Tracks is quite something. Some of the songs are duet with Tricky mumbling alongside. I'm not sure how affective this is; good in some spots but kind of annoying. Brand New You're Retro sucks; annoying, repetitive, and doesn't match the album so far at all. Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. It had a few highlights but the rest didn't hold up. 3 it is.
- It’s got great grooves, and the singer has a great voice. - Obviously has Massive Attack vibes, but its darker. - I knew Black Steel & Hell is Round the Corner - both are bangers. - The songs on the second half of the album all go on too long, even the short Brand New You're Retro feels long. I like Aftermath, but it's at least a few minutes too long. - Dislike the (never ending) song Strugglin'.
I don't know exactly what it was about this album, but I did not like it. I think the overall sound and the male performer's voice rubbed my the wrong way. I can't really explain it. The songs were alright for the most part though.
Un sound elettro diverso dal solito, carino ma nulla di top
Started out interesting. Lost a lot of steam. Got weird when the guy got involved. Not a sound that I love. Kind of a mix of hip-hop and industrial, with a couple of poppy songs in there.
I didn’t mind this. Not my go-to genre but it was very chill & easy to listen to. I did enjoy this more than I enjoyed Massive Attack.
I dug the low-key vibe. Some Public Enemy, some Portishead. This was a pleasant surprise that I'll mix into one of my Pandora stations.
Tricky is the more "impressionistic" of the trip-hoppers. I like it, but I don't love it (as much as, say, Portishead or Massive Attack).
I forgot about the existence of daylight saving time so I panicked when the album isn’t refreshed at 11pm EST. also guess portishead is the peak of trip hop and i don't like this genre too much apart from portishead 3/5
I'm a sucker for trip-hop, but this didn't really impress me too much. Portishead's "Dummy" ate its lunch and fucked its wife and basically makes it completely obsolete. Not to say it isn't bad, it's actually decent, but it's below average for one of my favourite genres.
Some good stuff and some shite
I thought I'd like this more due to the trip hopness off it but I wasn't arsed to listen to it
2.8/i'll be real, none of this hit the spot
Pretty decent!
Not a fan of the whispery vocals but I like the diversity of styles incorporated here
Enjoyed. Was a bit distracted.
This album was really interesting. The throughline was trippy dubby hip hop instrumentals with lots of cool samples, and I really enjoyed that. There was a lot of spoken word and great vocals from Martina Topley-Bird, which I learned after listening were mostly improvised. I enjoyed "Aftermath" and "Overcome" the most. "Brand New You're Retro" made me jump a little, it was a quick tone change. Some of the songs were a little weird. The album was almost a little unsettling. I enjoyed it, but not every song. 6/10
Half listened to this and probably warrants a relisten
One of the better electronic albums on the list. I love his gritty voice
If I had to think of single word to describe this album, it's gloomy. The mood is set from track 1. It's comfortable in the same way that laying half on a couch while you're high on smack is comfortable.
Greggs’ Portishead
I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I would never put Trip Hop on over, say, Reggae, but I wouldn't be mad if someone put this on.
Had some cool stuff in it
Listening to Maxinquaye feels like coming down in slow motion - smoke still in the curtains, but the windows are open now. It’s brooding, textured, and strangely intimate. Tricky builds a world out of tension and echo, though some moments wander a bit too deep into the fog. Martina’s voice is the steady hand I kinda needed. Haunting and refined, but maybe better suited for twilight than daylight.
Love this album. Such essential 1990's trip hop. Sounds like crime and drugs in grimy London undergrounds. Overcome and Black Steel are up there with the best of Massive Attack. Yeah, the vocals can be a bit shit. And yeah, like most trip hop albums, you get a few scene-defining bangers and a lot of boring sleepybeats. Okay, this is actually a lot more boring than I remember. But blokes on smack don't want any clangy clattering instrumentals or sudden tempo changes. Maybe you had to be there. On the rainy streets of London, or spun out in an opium den, or up drawing anime characters by lava lamp at 1am on a school night. That's where I go, anyway.
Never heard of this, though perhaps I should have. It's...fine? I don't know, it has a time and a place and I can assure you that sitting in my home office looking at spreadsheets is not a conducive listening environment for this kind of thing. Trip hop usually sits in the background, and I don't think this album is any different, but it sometimes pushes its way to the front. Unfortunately, I don't feel like it's a very good Album - each song is nice, but probably something I want to download off KaZ0aA and listen to piecemeal while playing counterstrike at 1 AM in 2001. Also Unfortunately, the standout track is Hell is Round the Corner, which really is just a Portishead track. Don't hate it but it didn't click with me. Probably a landmark album for a mediocre genre, but I turned on the music in the car this morning so I could play the beach boys for my kids and this started autoplaying. When I switched over to Mr. Wilson, I thought I heard some similarities with Pet Sounds. Who knows, maybe I'm a dumbass, but could be something there.
I kinda like a trip hop song here and there. But a whole album of it underwhelms me. 3*
It was fine with just her. 2.5.
This album had a really cool vibe. Chill, after hours type trip hoppy feel. Mostly female vocals, but some cool integration with male rapping voice. When I learned that Tricky was part of Massive Attack, I wasn't really surprised because of such a similar vibe. Although, I have to admit I have preferred the two MA albums on this project better than this one. Still very solid.
Trippy Euro hip-hopish rock? A genre I do not have a lot of experience with. I enjoyed the album, but nothing really jumped out at me. Good for background music. I liked the more ambient grooves in Pumpkin, Overcome and Abbaon Fat Tracks (fuuny tune).
This is someone’s thing, but it’s not mine.
Decent 3
A rather nice slice of Bristolian trip hop.
Not really my cup of tea but not bad. I recognised Hell Is Around The Corner but upon googling it seems I actually recognise it from Glory Box by Portishead, which used the same sample.
Bit meh
First song was cool!
call it Tricky how idk if i like it or not
The icy and breathy British trip hop club vibe never hit me just right, but I was impressed with the complex textures and general weirdness of these songs. A few stood out--Overcome, Aftermath--and over all, solid.
At times, I was totally on board with the trip hop complexity. At others it bogged down for me.
Discovered the duality of sampling Isaac Hayes' Ike's Rap II through this album. Prefer Portishead's version.
I definitely liked some of this.
Decent but not too engaging
This is a cool one. I like pairing of the sultry, ethereal vocals with rap. Very musically interesting and diverse album. All the songs are pretty vibey and chill. 6.5/10. There are a couple songs that I decidedly didn't really like, but others that I enjoyed. Least favorite: Ponderosa. Favorite: Hell is Around The Corner
This was a dark and cool album. Nothing was super upbeat
Pretty decent, some good stuff but not the most memorable thing ever
pretty exceptional. had some alternative tracks that hit the mark. Some if it sounded like early Bjork. Not bad
This is new to me but I do listen to a bit of Massive Attack, Tricky was a former member. So it’s an enjoyable listen overall, I like Trip Hop but it’s kind of background music for me. If I’m listening intently, I get bored after a few songs. Solid but once again, questioning why I needed to hear THIS before I died instead of just hearing MAs Blue Lines or Mezzanine
Ok album. Best song is heavy sampled
Trip-hop never did much for me, but it was nice to dive into this. I'm not sure what it says that my favorite track is his cover of Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos." The Smashing Pumpkins-sampling "Pumpkin" is fun, but the songs kind of recede into the background.
3.5 Freakyyyy Some nice songs, good cohearenc experimental hip-hop, elements From other genres 90s flair
easily one of the best albums of this stripe on the list; not for me but probably great if you're into this sort of thing
3.3
I’m out of my element when it comes to trip hop, especially British trip hop, but I'd heard of Tricky. I remember reading about him in Rolling Stone and SPIN magazine back in the day. I miss magazines. Anyway, after listening to Maxinquaye, I realized I’d heard a couple of songs off the album, though I’m sure I had no idea it was Tricky. Maybe I heard them in shows or as background music to ads. I didn’t hate the album, but maybe I didn’t get the album? It’s better than Roni Size, but again, a squawking crows choir is better than Roni Size. I can appreciate much of the album, but sometimes the songs do sound like the same thing over and over. However, as far as putting it on for background music, I think it works. It’s got a slow, chill groove, and you can really get some work done when it’s on in the background. But you can check that out for yourself. As for me, I’ve had enough.
and ghosts drift through my mind as i twist and turn in sleep
Maxinquaye is an album that i have rather weird feelings on. I do know that Tricky did work on the two Massive Attack albums in this project due to him being in that band when they released so it does make sense that a lot of these songs sound like Massive Attack songs. This album does feel incredibly inconsistent with it's quality as sometimes, the songs can be really good and other times, they can be really bad. At worst, the songs can be incredibly annoying due to trying to do too much with some pretty stupid lyrics too. Though at best, they can actually be some pretty good tracks with beats that don't get too repetitive even if they go on for a bit long. I still think i like both Massive Attack albums more than this one due to them just being way more consistent. Best Song: Black Steel Worst Song: Strugglin'
I liked it but became repetitive to me .
I can never tell if I like trip hop or not. My busy brain can't really fully focus and relax to enjoy it. I feel like it would be more my thing with a little 'influence', but in reality I'd fall asleep on the sofa. It's got all the right elements, it's just me who can't piece them together. I did enjoy Black Steel and You Don't.
The Good: … The Bad: … The Ugly: … What the hell does Maxinquaye really mean? And why does the artist name himself Tricky? For belonging to a musical genre I really don’t give a crap about, I actually enjoyed the listen. Most likely will never listen to Tricky again, but then again, one never knows, right? Down the middle… 3*
Blind album and artist. Downbeat electro chill stuff I guess. Not typically my thing but better than expected.
Neat
3/5
Tricky? Like the Daddy? Nope.. This is moody and cool. The pace is almost too laid back, so I caught myself tranced and vibing off a few times, but that might have been the lack of sleep the night prior. My insomnia ailment may have added to the atmosphere of the album. It’s sexy in tone, but not always gripping. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Hell Is Round The Corner - Brand New You're Retro - Suffocated Love
I remember the first time hearing Massive Attack and feeling like I had just discovered a new genre. They were dark and sophisticated, and felt right out of the underground. I feel like electronic / pop music of today owes a ton to the early pioneers in this genre a.k.a Trip Hop.. that being said I know "Tricky" was just one part of early Massive Attack and I feel like this particular album has something missing. It's almost like they figured out a certain recording / production style, got excited about it, and teased that formula into a whole album. This shines a bit of light into a genre, time and place of music production I don't know too much about and for that I am grateful, but this particular album is a niche or an offshoot of an offshoot and I don't think is quite worthy of consideration for total cultural impact like some of the others on this list.
Atmospheric and grimy. Some of the sounds felt right off a N64. Not really for me.
not as interesting as other albums from this genre but not bad
enjoyable
Totally fine
Enjoyed the vibe, some parts not aged well but overall an interesting listen.
It's so corny icl but the beats are catchy and I did like some of the songs. Also I swear have heard the "you don't wanna even try" line from "don't try" before.
This style of music was prevalent in the 1990's. It's not an album I've ever heard before, and I enjoyed it. It did start to feel a bit monotonous towards the end.
Das isch mir recht tricky gfalle zum beweerte. Au biz z lang her. Aber mal 3 puntitooos
Not really my style, but a pleasant listen nonetheless
Sorta nice, sorta redundant. Not sure if I finished it. I have no idea how I feel about it.
Between “ Glory Box” and “Hell is Round the Corner”, I think that “Ike’s Rap” may have been heard more in 1995 than it was in 1971. I liked this quote from Wikipedia: “Tricky had no concept of pitch and no regard for notational conventions or time signatures, nor any previous experience with sampling.” LOL, same. And, did this guy really just have some producer basically make his whole album for him just by saying “oi do a track wit dese two samples bruv” and then coming back to laconically rap over the result? If so, you almost have to respect that level of laziness. I was pleased to find that this album is fairly similar to Massive Attack. I was worried there would be a lot of British rapping (shudder) but I found that it was generally quiet enough that I wasn’t too bothered by it, except when it became absurdly and cringingly sexual. I don’t mean to come off as a Gen-Z style prude, but I don’t really need to hear “I fuck you in the ass, just for a laff” in my pop music. Lyrical content aside, I liked Martina Topley-Bird‘s vocals much more than Tricky’s rapping. Overall, I think this is a pretty good trip-hop album, and I like trip-hop, so I thought this was okay. However, I would put Blue Lines or Mezzanine on before I would this album. I don’t know if that’s l because I know them better, or because they are better, but either way it’s what I’d do. But if you like those albums you’ll probably like this. Or not. I don’t know you.
Some classic triphop songs, some not so classic.
ok
hit or miss. Thought I'd like it more. Some good songs though. Listened to about 7 months late at chateau d'eau. Female vocalist stole the show
Иногда интересная, иногда музыка для секса
After a re-listen I’ve bumped this to a 3. Enjoyed it and it had some solid tracks with an interesting sound.
I have a very old downloaded trip hop top 40 playlist (heavy on Morcheeba, Thievery Corporation, Massive Attack, Portishead) that I thought might have had Tricky on it, but it doesn’t. This is pretty decent, but not worthy enough to make the top 40 playlist.
Background music
This is not my favorite genre, but I liked this more than I expected. Solid background music with sometimes dark and sometimes dirty lyrics. Solid 3 stars.
Another band I’d not heard of. I liked the album. Not my taste though.
3/5
3.5
Cover 7 First half is good. My mind wandered during the second half. Would help with a second or third listen but for now, it's OK
Relatively groovy but not a huge hit for me.
I can see why people really liked this, but I found it unmemorable
на любителя.
I wish we were listening to The Beach Boys today instead of whatever this is. Technically impressive but who cares? I felt nothing.
Just meh. Some songs were cool some I don’t know if they could even be considered songs. I didn’t hate it, just kinda faded into the background
3. A few songs caught my attention, but wouldn’t seek this out. ———————————— My non-musician scoring system. 5 - Love it. Would play anytime, buy, see live… 4 - Good music. 3 - Average playlist. Depends on time and setting. 2 - I can’t listen to whole songs. 1 - No.
Weirdly enjoyed the trip hop vibes - no specific standout tracks, the only memorable one was the portishead heavy one.
Never gave it a chance in the 90s. Now that I have, I have to say, it's pretty interesting. I fear I've moved on though from this style. Time will tell.
Sonic bomb for the mind and soul
I really like Triphop, but this album didn't feel particularly groundbreaking for me. It's very moody, experimental and weird at times, which is good and works, but there aren't many moments that truly standout for me. The best songs for me where "Hell Is Around The Corner", which is pretty good but it's also difficult not to compare it to "Glory Box" by Portishead, which uses the same sample (and is arguably better). The other song I found really interesting was "Strugglin'". In terms of performances, the production as I said gets pretty weird and interesting. The vocal performance by Tricky are good, but Marlina Topley-Bird is the absolute highlight, her voice and delivery are flawless and fit the Triphop vibe perfectly.
Excelente música, pero sin el contexto adecuado, es un artista al que puedes amar u odiar.
The first half is good, but then it drags on and on until the end comes as a relief. Three stars seems fair.
Okay
Don't quite know what to make of this Electronic British Hip-Hop album because it isn't really Hip-Hop. Music to chill to.
Maxinquaye is a solid trip-hop album with some clever production touches that might color your mood, but don't expect it to change your life.
Heikko 3.
Decent listen.
Pretty cool.
Some interesting stuff but overall not too into it.
not really electronica but i don't know what else you'd call it
bizarre but interesting
Really liked this, some great tracks. Timeless.
That was definitely an album that happened. Can’t tell you much about it, because it was kind of boring. Had some nice female vocals, but overall just forgettable.
Not really sure what this is trying to be. Sounds like a spy movie soundtrack at times with generic lyrics.
I already knew of tricky and have a few albums. Never listened to this one before. Decent trip-hop (I think that's the genre). None of the songs stuck with me like some of his other stuff does but It was an enjoyable hour
7/10 I didn't immediately realise this was Tricky of Massive Attack fame, nor did I know that he'd ever done a solo album. Judging the album by the cover, I thought I was going into some 90s alt rock album that I wasn't particularly looking forward to, so to hear the familiar sounds of trip hop once I pressed play was actually a delight. The beats are fantastic, Martina's vocals evoke the usual trip-hop feel a la Portishead, and Tricky's vocal contributions distinguish this from the other albums in the genre, adding a slightly sinister but really cool, funky vibe. The second half of the album has a couple of weaker tracks - Brand New You're Retro and You Don't - but this is nonetheless a consistently enjoyable listen that I'll be revisiting. Listens: 1
Really sweet grooves, definitely a go to when yearning for some trip hop. Impressive first album in Tricky's solo career.
Top 10 trip hop album
>The Beatles Good vibes
Pretty decent Easy to listen to Better than it's description Solid 3
FAVO: Black Steel, Hell is around the corner, Aftermath
Consider turning up the vocals. Otherwise, a great trance-like experience like no other hip-hop album. Might be better with Genius open on a separate monitor.
The Aftermath of listening to this album was that I was Overcome.
This does absolutely nothing for me but I don't hate it. Wish we could give 2.5 for straight up middle of the road. Sounds like 8 other albums on this list.

Didn’t mind this
It was fine but trip hop doesn’t really do it for me.
This was dissapointing. Well not dissaponted like I expected something good. More on thought I liked the 90s. This was the same monotone sampling bullshit emotionless crap. I’m making the case for at least half stars again. This isn’t three stars but it’s certainly not 2 stars. I have to give three but this isn’t anything I would recommend to anyone at all.
I wasn't expecting much from this album, and man, I have never been so happy to be wrong. This was a good album.
This album started off really promising, very Massive -Esque. Not then it just devolved into shitty, sexual lyrics with uninteresting backing music. Disappointing.
3-
Moody trip-hop is moody. Pretty decent record overall, would probably benefit from many many listens to really deep dive and connect with but I have no complaints.
This is pretty good, actually. It's an extremely clean and well produced album that doesn't lack in ideas. Abbaon Fat Tracks has probably the single most horny rhyme scheme I've heard, and I love it. But it's too simple and repetitive for my taste, so I liked it but wasn't over the moon about it. 7/10
Super atmospheric but I doubt I'd ever revisit it. Possibly the closest I've come to missing listening to the full album, finishing at 23:52 Side note: I turned 30 today! Wild
My 3rd trip-hop album so far and I've enjoyed every single one. This one definitely doesn't rise to the heights of Dummy by Portishead but still a cool album. Favorites: You Don't
I would listen to this again there’s a little Jim in there with the Isaac Hayes/Portishead sample. Hell is Round the corner.
I'm not usually a fan of rap or hip hop but this was great!
I know of this artist but really never heard much of their stuff. Fascinating stuff. Reminds me of Bjork. Cool stuff. 3-stars
Not usually a fan but this has a cool sound
Slower, more moody and melodic than the typical aggressive shouty hip-hop. Fewer racial slurs (I counted just 2 and that was in a cover). Overall not bad at all. Maybe the female vocalist should be bigged up a bit more. This was her album more than Tricky's.
Ok
all over the place for me. sometimes painful and annoying but then redemptive at other times. Decent background music if nothing else. Want to give it a 1-2 or a 4 at other times. I will average it out at a 3
Not something I’d listen to everyday ,I found it a great way to start the day . Nice relaxing album . Sort of album you would put on at a party as background music
Highlights: Aftermath, Abbanon Fat Tracks, Brand New You're Retro. In a nutshell: shapeshifting triphop. You can tell that Tricky was relishing the opportunity to go deeper into the hip hop/dub side of triphop. More than he would ordinarily could with Massive Attack. It's dark, occasionally sexy, moody. The album loses steam for me towards the end of the album though. Overall: 5/10
Best Song: Black Steel. The rock vibe was necessary to bring a bit of life to such an understated album. Worst Song: Pumpkin. The guy with the creaky vocal fry ruined an otherwise fine track. Overall: The vibes are nice and the female vocalist is great, but boy if that dude doesn't spoil the fun every time he hops on the mic. Otherwise, the lo-fi trip-hop starts to lose its lustre about halfway through.
Ehh, a 2.5 rounded up. Not the album experience I'm typically interested, but they were original, experimental, and, at times, funky and vibey. Not really worth a re-listen though.
I kept waiting for this record to take off but it hung around at square one. Very very interesting and unique. However, it teetered on the fence between snooze fest and captivating and well - I fell onto the snooze fest side.
An album of two halves? Didn"t notice how much it tailed off back in the day. Was probably ahead of its time then. Now it just seems like a load of stolen samples. 7 out of ten minus a point for Tricky's acting.
6/10
Took time for me to get into it. Really unique sounds, not what I was expecting
At first I was listening to this and thought it sounded pretty decent, but then as it kept going it just sounded kinda bad. Kinda. It wasn't flat out bad but it definitely was not a positive rating.
Slow stuff, female vocals, I did not think I would enjoy this since this is so out of my usual listens. But lots of it was enjoyable.
Chiller
I usually feel pretty let down by trip hop albums because I go in expecting dummy and there isn't really anything that compares. It's pretty telling that probably the best song on this album is basically glory box. Still pretty good though
Eines der besseren R&B Alben insbesondere Dank der guten weiblichen Parts. Zum Ende verfällt es dann leider und die üblichen RAP Mechanismen und wurde fast noch schlecht.
Pretty good, but this really slaps if you play it at 1.25x speed on YT
This heavy industrial sound kinda reminds me of Portishead's debut. Solid album
decent
Way better than I expected. Good vocals and interesting beats.
По мнению А: 3/5 По мнению С: 4/5 ИТОГОВАЯ ОЦЕНКА: 3/5 (28.01.2025)
An album that sounds very ahead of its time, Tricky does an excellent job at creating very groovy and chill music that is well articulated. Her soft voice makes a good impression on this fascinating album.
3 Stars (8/15)
Definitely an album that belongs on this list. There were quite a few songs I was into even if I didn’t love the singer’s voice.
I surprising liked this album in moments, Initially, I judged a book by its cover and thought it wouldn’t be my thing, but it was good. There is good variation in the album with a very unique sound throughout with a sense of familiarity like I had heard it before with tracks like Pumpkin and Hell is round the corner. Favourite song: Overcome and Black Steel Least favourite: Abbaon fat tracks. just horrible lyrics. Album artwork: Not for me.
I was very glad to hear Martina Topley-Bird's vocals so prominently. Quite good album.
Kind of cool at first - chill trip-hop, reminiscent of Portishead - but it overstayed its welcome and started to drag. 2-3
Very listenable album
Hämärää ja hidastempoista trip hoppia. Vähän tylsähköä, mutta ihan jees kummiskin. Parhaat: Overcome, Strugglin', Aftermath
Not bad, I'd give it a 3.5 but not sure I can bump it up to a 4.
I thought this might be the moment I got into Tricky. I liked a couple tracks before, but it never really clicked... and, well, it still didn't. It just doesn't have the same atmosphere that my favourite artists of this genre do. There's something too sly about that doesn't hit the same dark warmth of something like Portishead or DJ Shadow.
Spooky good top half
I don't care for this sort of music much, but it was the least obnoxious hip-hop adjacent thing I've listened to (apart from linkin park, if that counts) this seemed to contain at least a bit of musicality. I didn't turn it off, and that's a win. First half of black steel was quite nice, but the limited amount of lyrics overstayed their welcome. Rest of the album was forgettable and vulgar.
I appreciate this project for making me listen to so much trip-hop that I probably would not have listened to on my own. This one is very interesting. It creates a darker vibe when compared to the likes of Blue Lines. Some of these songs aren’t winners, but I liked listening. His rapping style combined with the vocals create an interesting dynamic. Favorites were Black Steel, Aftermath, and Brand New You’re Retro.
A few tracks on here I liked, the rest was okay.
this give me early 2000's skate game i think? nice semi ambient sounds to it but didnt really tickle me at any point...
Solid, not as good as the better Massive Attack albums though.
Think I want less vocals.
A good album overall. Dark, cool, sensual. Interesting samples. Elements of electronic, rap, dub. Martina Topley-Bird, who sings on most tracks, has this kind of vulnerability in her voice that brings an element of danger. And there's a Public Enemy cover on here, which is just fascinating. I can recognize this as a good album, and it has a good vibe, but I do find that it's a bit too long. And while it there are elements here that are fresh, even for 2025, it probably was more so in 1995, and it's something I would probably only put on for background music. In short, solid, but I didn't gel with it as much as I thought I would. Fav tracks: Overcome, Ponderosa, Suffocated Love
Tricky - Maxinquaye I tried to enjoy listening to this album, but it's just that the sounds around are full of everywhere and there's a lack of direction on it. There are so many genres packed into one album, but it just ends up feeling dull and sometimes boring and repetitive. I get that Tricky tried to do something creative, and while I can't deny that this is good music, at the end it feels empty as most of these songs really don't have that much substance other than the lyrics which (for a lack of a better term) doesn't really go hand in hand with the instrumentals. Honestly, Martina (the female vocalist) kind of saved this album from sounding numb. Like I said before, I get the appeal but this sound isn't for me, this is good though. 1.- Overcome = 8/10 2.- Ponderosa = 8/10 3.- Black Steel = 7/10 4.- Hell Is Around the Corner = 7/10 5.- Pumpkin = 8/10 6.- Aftermath = 8/10 7.- Abbaon Fat Track = 7/10 8.- Brand New You're Retro = 6/10 9.- Suffocated Love = 8/10 10.- You Don't = 8/10 11.- Strugglin' = 6/10 12.- Feed Me = 7/10 FINAL SCORE: 7.3/10
It's a vibe! I only gave it three, mainly because it didn't have anything I'd want to hurry back to.
It’s fine. Nothing really stood out to me, but it’s fine.
Þetta var allt í lagi plata með þessum fyrrverandi Íslandskærasta en Hell is Round the Corner böggaði mig næstum allt albúmið og svo áttaði ég mig á að þetta var stef úr Glory Box með Portishead sem var einmitt á plötu á þessum lista. Það stef var svo úr Isaac Hayes lagi. Mér skilst að þarna hafi einhverjir orðið fúlir út í aðra. Óháð því. Fín plata sem ég mun samt líklegast ekki hlusta á aftur
Perfect heist music
Oh fuck I know hell is round the corner it’s a good song! I felt it was an album that revolved around it hit though unfortunately the rest was very samey. 3/5
3/5
I found this album to be mostly fine. The exception which immediately caught was Hell Is Around The Corner, with that slow captivating bass line immediately drawing me in. This album probably comes under the umbrella of trip-hop, but (aside from the aforementioned track) didn’t engross me as much as some others in this genre. It was certainly interesting throughout, and I especially enjoyed the female vocals. Overall though, I feel like a middle of the road kind of rating is fair here.
Some great grooves & Tricky is a legend from an amazing city but I really struggled with this in parts. Sometimes the songs are not as good as the individual parts if that makes sense. Best track/s: Black Steel, Aftermath 5 / 10
Not great, not awful
hm, interesting. this is certainly a unique album. it's refreshing to get something that's such a departure from the glut of brit pop/rock. i really liked the clean female vocals here and some of the more approachable songs. but i think it was ultimately just a little bit Out There for me. i was really strugglin' to get through strugglin' in particular. still, i think this is an interesting and worthy addition to the list and i'm glad i listened to it.
weird album but kinda neat. didn't know what to expect from this and it's kind of a dark and brooding 90s semi-industrial sort of romp. not my favorite but it's fine. favorites: overcome, black steel
