Reviews (page 4 of 7)
This was ok. It all kinda blended together, but there were some interesting songs. I've never heard of The Adverts, but I was 2 when this came out, so I guess that makes sense.
Noises average
When I played this album at the office, I was told right from the start that I was supposed to play middle-of-the-road music. I continued listening at home. Much of the same, the songs are full of energy.
Not bad actually, would give this another listen
Another one I’m pretty sure I listened to, but can’t quite remember. Simpsons: No
Punk isn’t my favorite but they were fine
Only rating this a 3 because it stands above the other Brit pop albums I've had to listen to. Still not my favorite genre, but this was more listenable than others.
This was alright. Suitable for driving to. It was probably better at the time. Nothing felt special about it. Yes, I copied and pasted the review I gave an album 2 days ago. Because all this 70s punk sounds the same. I like punk, it rocks and has power and speed, but none of it really sticks out, so, at the same time, I don't like punk.
3 - good British punk
Not really my kind of thing but I read they were influential in the punk movement so some credit for that. Gets an additional ´Spinal Tap’ star for them packing it after their manager electrocuted themselves.
As punk goes this is one of the better albums I’ve heard. Quick and to the point, some interesting melodies and well produced. I’m just not sure as a genre even the best of the best will be that appealing to me as it seems to have quite a low ceiling. There is only so much space for virtuosity, interest, and interplay that it can deliver if sticking within the established boundaries of it.
Hard to really identify what the secret ingredient of good punk music is. There’s no obvious reason for this to not be on the level of any of the top tier English punk bands from the 70s, but it isn’t. Just don’t have the juice. To be honest it almost comes off as Canadian, which I know it isn’t. But maybe the secret ingredient is “don’t be Canadian or even sound like you MIGHT be Canadian.” Anyway this is good, fine.
Punk's first wave album. It's not bad, but there were other albums from this era that we better. Best Tracks: One Chord Wonders; Bored Teenagers; No Time To Be 21
Can definitely see how this could have influenced the punk that came later.
Not bad.
Cool classic punk album, I’ve never really listened to this type of music but the first song hooked me. The songs are catchy but none really stuck to me.
70
6/10
Not bad, good grooves. Little edgy. Kinda liked it.
Fun? Sure. But nothing terribly exciting. A lot of the choruses were very repetitive and the songs kind of blended together. Pretty average.
Punky, aight, not a full album experience
Another British punk album. It was exactly what I expected to hear. It was fine, if a bit boring and outdated. I really don’t have anything else to say about it, most of this early punk stuff does nothing for me. There are too many British bands on this list. 3/5
Not bad but not my fav
it was just another punk record i suppose, it sounded okay, some good melodies but i didn’t really need it
Punk As F and actually liked the sons about bored teenagers and church.
It's ok. It sounds like a lot of other British punk from this era.
Not really into punk much, but it's decent enough. Nothing earth shattering though.
I liked their sound but the songs are all quite similar
One song
never heard before, really liked the overall vibe, even if a bit repetitive at times. Ideally a 3.5 but halves are not allowed
A lot of early punk doesn't do much for me, so I had low expectations, but this has some fun tracks. Bored Teenagers is stuck in my head.
I mean, hey, it was pretty much perfect for what I needed that day. Quick and short.
Very typical Brit punk, but I did appreciate the cleaner sound
This is a decent and safe british punk record from the late 70's. It doesn't do anything that captivates me nor anything that I disliked. It is very in the middle of the road. I don't have anything more interesting to say as it is a very simple sounding record, but at least I wasn't bored.
The pink vibes are giving✨ You can tell that its their first album though. I dig a little into the bands history and it's basically described as a one-hit/one-album wonde, because of their musical skill level. Enjoyed the melodies, guitar and bass tho, so I would give it a solid 3/5🎉
quiero darle un 3.5 . me gusta, no me encanta, lo escucharia y disfrutaria, un poco monotono, pero nice
Was decent but I don’t have much to say
It's rough around the edges, and the songs are certainly samey, but it's a fun & catchy listen. A few gems on here too.
Pretty decent kind of pop punk. If someone were playing it or I was at a show, I would have a good time listening.
Pretty average 70s/80s punk album. I didn't find any of it to be mega compelling but neither did I dislike it.
Good introduction to British punk
A poor man’s Clash or Ramones. Pretty good, but we’ve heard it before…
Flashback to High School with this one. Had this disc back in the day, but totally forgot about it. Upon repeat, it's still music my 18-year old self loved, but not my jam any longer. Happy memories, but not a standout for me.
I got into this album not knowing what to expect and being pleasantly surprised. While I’m not sure how frequently it would be in rotation I can see this album keeping me company. Not a complete lyrical masterwork but rhythmically satisfying.
I found it hard to believe this album was from 1978. While neat, it felt too one note. I dug it, but I won’t be seeking out this relevant album in the future. The music it inspired is better than this original sound.
I liked it better than the clash, but only barely.
I liked this. Only knew the song Gary Gilmore’s eyes which has been on a ton of comps. Definitely not a standout first wave punk record to me but hits in a few spots
3.5
I didn’t hate it. My base enjoyment for a lot of it was ok.
Decent. But no punk album should be over 35mins in length.
High energy Punk from the second wave of British Punk. Sadly lacks some of the killer anthems of the first wave. Stand out tracks Gary Gilmour's Eyes and Bored Teenagers
I quite liked it. Very of its time. Still 3🌟 though.
Not my style of music, but I can see how this was a really influential punk album
Not terrible, not great, it’s there.
#719. How many albums are left on this list? Because I'm running out of ways to say something is average. 3/5: acceptable
Top punk, not musical enough for me personally, but I don't think I have a leg to stand on when I approach The Adverts asking for some more chords.
Cool
Straight forward classic punk
The vocals are ugh for me.
It was ok
This is good punk. Still not my favorite, but good.
Good, but very forgettable
What I love about this first wave punk stuff is that it’s basically old school rock and roll but noisier. And less earnest. It’s fun. And this is fun. This is what the Who wishes they sounded like. THREE STARS
This was good. Very solid punk album, and for me, it's a 7. I completely understand a lot of these other comments though -- unfortunately, it does kind of just blend in with the crowd (and it sure is a crowd) of other British punk bands. Fave songs: - One Chord Wonders - New Church - Newboys - Gary Gilmore's Eyes - Bombsite Boy - No Time to be 21 - Safety in Numbers - On Wheels - Great British Mistake
Da e greit, men like egentlig ikkje punk så godt
3/6
really liked the english vibe to this. honestly felt so motivated during my leg day so big ups to this album. the singles obviously stand out but the rest of the songs are pretty good as well!! also i think i had listened to gary gillmore's eyes on a run in london so good to revisit
I gave Blondie a 5 a few weeks ago so I can't fully endorse any album that makes fun of new wave. (Don't ask me what I think about The Hold Steady.)
Late 70s UK punk and it sure sounds like it. It’s got that classic snottiness to it. Under the attitude is some decent songwriting, with a few catchy hooks that could be even bigger earworms if pop was the goal here. I can hear the clear influence on Jay Reatard, an artist I’m a big fan of. Overall, a decent early punk album that’s been overshadowed by its peers in terms of longevity, influence, and legacy - which seems appropriate to me. Good listen but limited wow factor.
A bit slow to start but great last few tracks
This sounds a lot like a lot of music I’ve always loved. Unfortunately for it, this just made me want to listen to old favourites, so I may not keep it in rotation
3.2 1x extended 69m
Average score for average British boys band with guitars and meek lyrics.
Not really my taste of music but a good album.
I was aware of The Adverts via some old punk compilations I had but had never been inspired to investigate any further. It's a very listenable punk album - with good vocals - although nothing to really elevate it from their peers.
Punky but not very interesting
Solid English punk band I hadn’t heard of.
Great if you love Brit punk. I wasn’t exposed to this type of music while growing up but it’s still pretty fun to listen to.
Solid Brit punk rock album. Had never heard of previously.
One lesson from this album: even though punk is not my genre, I don't have to hate it. Another lesson: I don't have to like it, either. I bet this is a great punk album. But.
I like punk because it paved the way for post punk, which is what I really love. But this record is pretty good - although there is nothing that really stands out
Alright but not great or ground breaking. 3 stars.
Classic British early punk
For 1970’s punk it was not bad, but also not great. They knew how to play their three cords and kept it pretty clean.
I know it’s 70s but really do we need even more punk/brit pop. I have had enough of brit pop
more brit punk on this list? did not expect to actually enjoy it, but I did. vocals & lyrics were good, they could actually play the instruments quite well, and enjoyed changes in tempos. 3.5 stars
The Adverts are one of those first-generation of English punk bands that one reads about, slightly hagiographically, but the actual experience of listening to is kind of underwhelming. Now, not everyone in the scene could be the Sex Pistols or the Clash or the Slits or the Buzzcocks -- there needed to be some second-string bands to fill out the scene, and the Adverts are clearly one of those bands. Crossing the Red Sea with The Adverts is a perfectly adequate and representative album of English punk in 1978. A few tracks appear on Now That's What I Call Punk (or similarly titled) compilations; Bored Teenagers and One Chord Wonders are almost hilariously cliched examples of what a 1978 punk song should be. Gary Gimore's Eyes is somewhat more interesting, but the rest of the album is filler. The Adverts should be relegated to appearances on punk compilations, with their albums left to molder at the back of the collection of aging punks across South London. 2.5 stars, rounding up, because Gaye Advert rocked an iconic look.
Looking through Gary Gilmore’s Eyes was seminal - a very provocative punk anthem. The rest was solid and energetic but they will forever be associated with that song. Not a bad legacy though.
While not quite ready to give it a four star rating, I was amazed at how much I enjoyed this record. Or maybe better put, that I didn’t dislike it as much as I expected I might. It was catchy, short, peppy, and pretty darned good.
Boy there's a lot of British music on here. This was pretty good. Some cool chord changes. Good solid punk that I never even knew existed before today.
I didn't mind having it on, made me feel rather energetic. Other than No Time To Be 21, I can't remember a single other song.
Well, I like punk a lot, but I have to say that compared to sex pistols or clash it's not even close unfortunately. It wasn't particularly bad, but it felt pretty empty, for menmost of the songs lacked a bit of anger or at least some strength. For a few moments it was really good, then somehow it didn't work. Sometimes it felt like forced cure, just without the things that make cure good.
A very regular punk rock album...
It’s good, for what it is. Which is 70s punk, which means the bar is low. Theres very little on Wikipedia about the band or this album, except a quote that calls it the equal of the Sex Pistols debut. I will simply say that although I do not like 70s punk very much, I have heard of the Sex Pistols, and their debut. I have never, until today, heard of the Adverts. I’m not saying this album doesn’t belong here, it’s better than many I’ve heard, but I don’t know, man. No Deftones? No Tool? But this?
first listen not bad
Understandable punk
I like it. It's like if Sex Pistols took the music more seriously. It's still very rudimentary, which I guess was obligatory for punk of this era, but I'm charmed by tracks like Gary Gilmore's Eyes.
Getting back to back 1977 English, punk rock albums was a bit surprising, and a bit tiresome. Some decent songs, but the album kind've dragged
Wanted to like this a lot more than I did. I usually dig this style/era, and I definitely didn't *dislike* this, but it felt like a lesser version of much better bands and records. Smith's writing is pretty strong - "Bombsite Boy" and "Great British Mistake" were lyrical highlights - but I think his vocals are a bit lacking, and there was little from a melodic or instrumental standpoint that stood out to me. I'll revisit it eventually, but on first listen, I'm not sure it holds up to Buzzcocks, The Undertones, or a slew of other groups from this scene, let alone the Clash or Sex Pistols. 3/5
Not a big punk fan
3.5/5
Not bad, some proper punk from the 70s. All the tracks start to sound alike after a while though
This is fun classic British punk. I think the first half is better than the second. Favorite songs were One Chord Wonders, New Church, Newboys, and Gary Gilmore’s Eyes.
Pretty good punk. A lot of the songs sound very similar but they have a good sound
Was a fun album but didn’t finish
Not bad, maybe a little samey, but too good to be a 2/5
Was dreading this during the first riff but it was a false crap dawn and ended up being a good listen. Bits of KISS and that New York sound in there.
It's fine enough, typical early punk. Maybe a little more polished than most of this era
Pretty classic brit-punk. Fun, energetic, but nothing that really stood out to me on this one. I'd give it a solid 3/5
Fun, boppy late 70s proto punkish.
Decent. Like something playing in the background at a hipster used record store (complimentary).
I have to say, I liked this one, but aside from the Gary Gilmore song nothing else stood out. It was all good but not much else.
Pretty run of the mill
It was alright
Rad. Fuzzy guitar punk I fux with. I dig the flange echo sound (?) on his vocals. Reminds me of old Alice Cooper. Drummer definitely amps the energy in this album with his high-speed surf-rock drum rolls on the toms. I also really like the timing change-ups they throw into their otherwise simple straight ahead punk jams.
Hmm. Not sure about this one, it kinda went in one ear and out the other. I'm not the guy to be judging the quality of punk songs, and I don't really know much about the history of UK punk to judge based on that either. It sounds decent to me, but I'd still rather listen to The Clash or Ramones. I do think it got better as it went on. Not sure I will come back to this one, but its alright.
it was aight. Sounds like a lot of the stuff we listen to today.
Nothing special, just kind of there for me
I haven't listened to a ton of 70s punk rock, but this feels a lot more palatable than most of what I've heard. Still, I just don't really like music in general so this gets a 3/5.
Better than other Punk albums on here. Sick of Punk now though.
Meh
ok
Rating: 5.5/10
Don’t like punk rock
Liked it more than I thought I would
I’d never heard of this band. Was glad to stop in and have a listen. Probably won’t come back to them, but through no fault of their own. This is just someone else’s thing.
this was more enjoyable than i thought it would be
Meh
Fast strumming punk
OK I suppose but not fantastic
Punky, but not too harsh
Can we stop with the clashy unnecessary punk music? Fun to listen to 15 seconds of each song and then instantly boring and repetitive. Music no one really asked for
3.5/5 Short, fun songs that are full of fast punky flair. Proper British Punk tunes to stick on when you’re in a good mood or a snarky one. Top 3: Safety in Numbers Gary Gilmore’s Eyes One-Chord Wonders
Perfectly serviceable punk, but yeah, just more British punk in the list. It's really interesting because this is the second punk/post-punk album I've got recently where the music's fine, but give that bassist a raise, lol. Gaye Advert's got some great basslines on this. The highlight is Safety in Numbers. It's got a darker vibe to it compared to most of the album, which I like.
This is good and definitely grew on me. It's early British punk and delivers almost exactly what you'd expect, musically, thematically, and in consistency. Some good songs, which I look forward to hearing again.
British punk right? Of which I am a fan so enjoyed this one, hadn't heard before. The album was pretty similar flow cross the board. Safety in Numbers was fun more dynamic guitar stuff and eerie melody. Great British mistake is fitting to the state of the world. Gonna give a three first impression solid.
I dig the more melodic, emotional edge it brings to punk. Lyrically it's pretty solid too. I found it pretty enjoyable.
One of the better late 70s UK punk albums. Unusual in the fact that that the singer can sing and most of the band can play their instruments (though the drummer is totally out of his depth).
Never heard of this, and never heard anything quite like it. Interesting and enjoyable and I hope I don’t forget about it. (ntm.)
This kind of just sounded like standard English punk. Nothing really stood out too much but it wasn't bad.
This was fun! Cool, punchy and unmistakably punk rock. I don't want to say its mundane, because I know its foundational to a lot of later punk music. But it is fairly simple and more of an overall vibe. Its hard to distinguish one song from the next. And I think that's kind of the point? I'm a sucker for all things punk though, and this was a good time.
It's alright late 70s British punk, which has pop leanings. Unlike some American or hardcore stuff, less experimental as well, more produced and less DIY sounding. There are exceptions on both sides of course. Thematically this stuff is more like what I understand "pub rock" to be, a little violent and reflecting a lower economic class' attitude as a reaction to the last ten years of hippie infused prog nonsense. But The Adverts are leaning to pop more than even The Damned, maybe not as much as The Stranglers. "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" has a spooky feel, I want to call it proto-goth. Overall well done with a couple of snoozers and nothing really exciting or outstanding in a genre crowded witgh interesting and important music.
Song: one chord wonders this song sounds good i really like it Song: bored teenagers this song is good i could not hear it well because people are talking but it is good i never heard of it though but this is kind of the songs my brother listens to but not quite Song: New church this song at the start was good but this sounds sad i do not know why but i guess it is kind of good this album would maybe get a 3 stars
I don't like this because its too rock type of music and the lyrics don't really match with the song. I would not recommend this to someone else because I don't think they would like it. I give this album a solid 3 stars.
Feels oddly pedestrian for something which, on the face of it, sounds pacy and energetic. It's alright for sure, just lacking a certain something.
Crossing the Red Sea With the Adverts is a pretty decent album. It is a late 70s British punk album so it has all the bells and whistles you would expect from an album with all of these characteristics and in my opinion, its done pretty well. The songs all have that fast paced and rebellious energy that you would expect to see from a punk album like this making the album rush by and really never getting all too tedious. Granted, this album is very samey and also very cheesy as it does have all the quirks of late 70s british punk rock albums but i still enjoyed this album for being a fun, inoffensive listen. Best Song: Safety In Numbers Worst Song: Bored Teenagers
Sounds fun to attend a live concert of, but I probably won't listen to it again.
Klinkt als een basic Brits punk album uit de jaren 70. Gelukkig voor mij vind ik basic Britse punk albums uit de jaren 70 geweldig. En dus krijgt deze een 3.1 van mij, wat op zich niet slecht is.
Day498- i’m glad to hear the bands that help lay the groundwork for their genres
It is 70s punk. That is about all I can say.
An English punk album that means it. Not as spellbinding as The Clash at their best, but not as sloppy as Sex Pistols. It's just good punk rock. Nothing too shiny or undercooked.
Way better than I expected it to be. It was an enjoyable album that I would happily listen to again. A little too repetitive for my tastes, but at least it wasn't all noise. 3.5 stars, rounded down to 3. - Punk rock... Carrying a lot of judgement going into this - First song: Not as bad as I expected! It's not just noise - It's a bit of an eyeroll, but it's fun
I like some of these songs though I feel like I heard this exact album a couple times before
Is there such a genre as "smooth punk"? If there is, then this album would fit right in. It's a little too smooth for my liking. I like a bit more anger and angst in my punk music.
3.5
I overall like the sound of the album, great energy, but I'm not sure what they bring to the table. They almost feel like a link between Punk and Post Punk but that had already happened by the time this album came out in early 1978. It's a great listen though. (7.2) ★★★½ (
Melodic 70s punk, with nice hooks. 3.5 stars
3.5
What’s the Buzzcocks tell me what’s a happening? What’s the Buzzcocks tell me what’s a happening? This is 70s UK punk but less slummier and with an ever so slight power poppy edge a bit like The Buzzcocks but without any of the great songs. In fact most of the songs pretty much all sound the same from the first song till last. They’re not as annoying as their namesakes on TV, Amazon or YouTube but these are still adverts that are best skipped.
Pretty good punk album. 3.5 stars
I thought I'd heard all the first generation punk bands worth hearing, but not this one. Gary Gilmore's Eyes stands out.
There's nothing really objectionable here, but also nothing that grabs me. 70s British punk just isn't my thing. The bass is probably the most interesting part of the record, and the vocals the least, but both of those are marginal. 5/10
Nüd schlächt.
one chord wonders fangt guet ah? bored teenagers macht häsig wiiter. new church het en uhuere zug druff uii. mag irgendwie wies afoch huere gas git. kei ahnig wer de gary gilmore isch aber sie luege dur sini auge. anschinend. no cool. great british mistake isch sehr cool kei ahnig um wases goht. aber super schluss vom album. glaub e 3? het etz nüt mega geils drunder aber par interessanti moment und s isch so roh wie es punk album mues sii.
hahahahah one chord wonder seeehr funny okee es isch no fun aber bis jz sochli najaaa muss endlich de titel vom lied jedes mal 719 mal wiederholt werde bombsite boy isch na cool!! unf hslt chli villsiitiger nvm ja es isch aggressively okay es het sich au sooo vill länger als e halbstund ahgfühlt? naja, es knapps 3 gits. d musig an und für sich isch ja no cool gsi, iwie eifach nüt speziells us minere sicht
There are some decent melodies in the grime. There is a lot on this list similar to this, but this is probably one of the better ones. Nice production, crisp sound.
Started kinda weak, but I ended up enjoying it.
This is cool. I love punk and this is what I love about punk. Aggressive attitude, simplistic music but with great catchy melodies and a lot of conviction. Not an expert but I know The Adverts are also considered an influential band. Worthy three stars. Willing to call it three and a half. It’s great but doesn’t posses the greatness I expect of four stars.
OK, there's certainly better albums of this era but enjoyed the listen
Very much a 70s punk album. It's good and everything is done competently enough but it doesn't do that much to stand out for me. I will say that I liked the middle section of On the Roof though, that stood out I can't really think of much else to say Highkights: On the Roof, Bored Teenagers
I don't know. On my fourth or fifth listen. There's like one guitar rhythm part that stood out but I couldn't tell you which song. Very middle of the road for me. 2.5
Very classic-sounding British punk. It does sound kinda samey to me after a while but I appreciate the tight production.
solid
I'd never heard of these guys. Fun sound.
This generator has introduced me to a lot of punk bands, including a lot of fresh and interesting ones. Unfortunately The Adverts didn't age ad well. The album is fine but it suffers from sounding a bit too much like the punk template that's been copied over and over again. The blank generation playing one chord over and over again. If you were a Sex Pistols fan back in the day and were itching for more, the Adverts could fill a void. They did so with less aggression that many others, putting them somewhere in between The Sex Pistols and the Clash. It's a good album but it's now drowning in a sea of imitators.
Basic punk rock album. Nothing incredible, nothing terrible.
Not bad. After a string of 1*s, I was tempted to reward them - but kept it honest.
I liked several songs on this album - One Chord Wonders, Bored Teenagers, Gary Gilmore's Eyes. Unfortunately I kind of tuned out towards the end, but it was a refreshing change after Limp Bizkit. We're just bored teenagers Looking for love Or should I say emotional rages.
Liked the energy...but nothing that I'd listen to again.
would go hard in 2005 indie club
This album has all the essential elements of 70's punk minus perhaps the most important thing.....it's not catchy. I came away feeling like I listened to one long punk song without the proverbial earworm from any particular song.
I listened to the original album (11 tracks) not the later releases with more tracks. This is punk/rock from one of those obscure British groups. This isn’t my genre and the songs are not memorable, but there is something about the album which I enjoyed.
Trapped in the 70s... the opposite of the land of milk and honey. This band is new to me. They're punk alright. They're British alright. Songs are short. They all sound pretty similar, but that's typical for a first listen, I suppose. The idea of eye(part) transplants always unnerved me as a kid (and adult?), so I guess they tapped into something with that Gary Gilmore joint. Highlight: 'Bored Teenagers'
Usually I love a bit of punk, so I’ll come back to this one to give it a relisten when I’m in the mood - today was a bit overwhelming and this was too noisey, crash and samey throughout. I did a bit of toe tapping, so it’s got something about it that I’ll come back for
I'd never heard of this band before today. They're fine. It's inoffensive and pretty forgettable.
It's pretty alright. Decent punk, but nothing that stands out, and most of the tracks blend together.
The occasional sprinkle of modulation and a broken rythm here and there keeps this one slightly fresh but ultimately it is more 70's punk. The songs are thusly similar that the live versions didn't register as something I heard before.
This was quite a lot of fun. I feel like first wave punk has grown a bit off of me considering how much more interesting post punk and post hardcore sonically but this album is eclectic enough to keep me engaged through its short runtime
Favorite Track: One Chord Wonders
first time hearing about this band, it was a fine ride.
Just a good punk album and nothing more.
It's a good album....
Pretty good but pretty standard punk album, highlights were one chord wonders, New church, Gary Gilmoures eyes and Bombsite boy which had a cool buildup. Rest of the songs were generic punk which was decent. Overall a high 3(6/10)
Some of the most convincing punk vocals I've heard. They don't bring this all the way up to 5 stars, but (perhaps unusually for the punk genre) they also don't drag it down to a measly yet unsurprising 1 star. There's a lot of snark and bite, shown by strong enunciation in several songs. I first noticed it in New Church. The melodies are also... well, they're not exactly McCartney-level, but they're unexpectedly good given the style. The name of the opening track, "One Chord Wonders", is less suited to this band themselves than most of the punk movement. Maybe it's a commentary about the monotonicity of their contemporaries? (Not sure. I'm not a lyrics guy.) The frequent doubling of guitar and bass parts gives the music an almost anthemic sound - a little odd, maybe, but it kind of works. Makes the music sound bigger and more important than it is. (And given its numbers on Spotify, it isn't.) Overall, this album is pretty solid. The exception is Bombsite Boy, which is near objectively worse than the other tracks because of its horrific out-of-tune first half. The latter half, which returns to standard high-quality punk, saves it. Overall, though, the record is dandy. I would have preferred some ballads or changes in instrumentation to get a more varied timbre within tracks and mood between different tracks. That's a pattern I've noticed with many greatest-of-all-time albums, particularly those from the 70s: they really try to showcase a diverse range of moods and (sometimes) styles. Sure, maybe that kind of music-making was part of the "music meta" in the late 70s, and the entire point of punk was to break free from that. But to be fair, it was the meta because it was good. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. 3/5 Key tracks: New Church, Gary Gilmore's Eyes, No Time to Be 21
Reminds me a little of the Clash. I enjoyed it and would listen to it again. It might get better the second time.
Passable, even enjoyable, first-wave British punk. More dynamic than the Ramones, that's for sure.
Sounds like some Bored Teenagers made this one. Bunch of One Chord Wonders.
There is a strange fascination with the new here: New Church, Newboys, a New Day Dawns. It seems to fit in with the Damned's recent debut, the first UK punk single, New Rose. However, the Adverts are insistent, on Safety in Numbers, that they were "always there anyway, without the New Wave/What about the New Wave?/Did you think it would change things?" This speaks somewhat to the contradictions of punk: new, but old sounding; challenging, but rudimentary; aggressive, but childish. Never as primitivist as it makes out to be, One Chord Wonders has more than three chords and irony rather than the truth. Is that the Andalusian Cadence? Very sophisticated. Or just Runaway by Del Shannon. It's hard to tell if the Adverts sounded new or not at the time. They won't let on. However, elements of post-punk are already present in their punk - bits sound like the Damned, but even moreso there are yelps like Dirk Wears White Sox and the intro of Bombsite Boy is practically The Virgin Prunes. Is it any good though? It's fine. I like the bass. 2.5 I have never heard this before and I really enjoyed it. Good songs, well sung. 3
If I were a teenager in 1978, Id probably love this. Either way, it's pretty good.

A 2.75
Good album, not super notable but solid from to back
Good! I thought it was a bit front-loaded, but the energy was consistent throughout.
Like the Sex Pistols but can sing and play their instruments better. I like the first track.
I’m a punk fan in general so I liked this, but it doesn’t really stand out in any way to me.
I like this album for a bit, but it starts to get reallyyyy repetitive. Basically impossible for me to pick any highlights because every track could be the same song for all I can tell. Highlights: Newboys New Day Dawns
This is quite melodic for seminal punk. This music has a classic, dissatisfied youth edge. It doesn’t sound dated. I appreciate the guitars (more than one chord!), songcraft, and there’s even singing. Not bad.
It’s fun British punk rock from the 70s, so even if it was bad I probably would still like it. But this is pretty good. They’ve got a good energy about them, like you can hear they’re loving making this music. This would have been a fun show to be at.
Decent punk
solid punk. nothing to get crazy about today? could i write poetry to this? n
Pretty good. Not great. Kinda mid. I'm sure this was cutting-edge Punk Rock music for the time. In 1978, loud and snotty Punk was far from mainstream. This album was probably shocking to "The Establishment", particularly with songs like "Gary Gilmore's Eyes." But today, it's just...sorta... y'know... meh.
Decent late 70's punk rock. 3,5/5
Helt ok, rätt bra
It was a pretty decent album. I’d say a 3
The rebel child is showing... Fun and nothing too special, as punk should be. Some may argue it's filth, disgusting, noisy, boring, garbage. To all of those people, take this middle finger and kindly shove it up your ass. 3 stars.
This is the kind of thing I wanna get more of from this generator! Unlike other punk bands, the Adverts are are more light and catchy. It's something I would recommend so someone who wants to get into classic punk music but is intimidated by the heavier stuff. The wikipedia description calling them equal to the Sex Pistols and the Clash is pretty funny. Favorite track: One Chord Wonders
Pretty fun one. Simplistic, energetic and catchy one that I can't really dislike all too much Probably wouldn't be disappointed if I'd missed out on this, it's very generic as a 70s Punk album
Ik
3 - I was kinda liking this more than I thought after the first song, but just got sooooo repetitive after a while
A fun little punk album, not overly angry and has some strong melodies throughout. The lyrics aren’t anything incredible and the instrumentation is pretty typical to what you’d expect, the bass is probably the standout on the album. The sound design is dark and in your face but the band doesn’t seem to take themselves too seriously and there’s a great sense that the band thoroughly enjoyed making this. The vocals are pretty good too and lend a great deal of energy to the songs. Standout tracks are , and the weakest tracks are. Overall a fun listen that doesn’t overstay its welcome but is by no means a life altering or genre defining album as far as I can tell. 3.5/5
I saw English punk band and immediately got nervous, but the album turned out to be better than I anticipated. I’m not saying I’m going to go search for more stuff of The Adverts, but this was a solid punk album.
Middle of the road punk album
Totally fine. A couple of catchy tunes like One Chord Wonders and I guess Gary Gilmore's eyes, but the whole thing just sounds like a bunch of 16 year olds making nonsense and having fun. Points for that but I wouldn't consider this super talented or deep
Enjoyed this
Nism lih poslusu, mal prevec intense mi je bil
I listened to this yesterday and I really can't remember a single song on it. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. It gets a 2.5.
Another one of those "I'm not in love with it, but I like it" albums.
Enjoyed. Reminiscent of the Radiators from Space (the two are cut from the same cloth). Not amazing, but would probably listen again.
I enjoyed this. The release date in 1978 really synced with my discovery of punk and new wave and I got a great feeling of nostalgia while listening.
Some really good songs on here. "Bombsite Boy" and "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" really stood out for me, and I'll likely revisit the album again for these songs. Some tracks felt like filler but maybe they'll grow on me
Before listening to this album, I read via Wikipedia that this album was well regarded in the punk rock genre. I seem to have grown an aversion to punk rock as part of these 1001 albums because many punk albums end up being nonsensical with discordant notes thrown together in an unappealing manner. Not here! The Adverts are authentic punk rock. This debut album even sounds fresh to my ears in 2025, despite the album's release in 1978. The music is fun, the lyrics can be cheeky or weird ("Gary Gilmore's Eyes") or about politics ("Great British Mistake") or just about being young. Not my favorite, but I enjoyed its uniqueness. And, you know, those punk rockers really know how to create a short album.
I mean, overall it was pretty standard in the punk department. Nothing revolutionary, but also not so hardcore that it was unlistenable. I don't think there's anything here that is more special than the likes of The Sex Pistols or The Clash, though.
Boring Punk
Fun punk sound. Almost punk pop
Fairly fun UK punk rock from the 70's, but there were a lot of better bands around at that time.
Indeed, that was punk rock.
Glam punk for the glam punk lovers, if there is still glam punk lovers out there over planet Earth. This album is for you, glam punk heads. You'll like it, I promise. This is glam punk.
Menevä bra britti punk, cathy melodier några gitarr solon också STARK 3
Old dirty, jangly punk rock that's just a bit too dirty and jangly. Not bad but not my fav
Ok. Not my first pick.
I had heard the Gary Gilmore's Eyes refrain before, but never placed it. Easy to see how the group had been overlooked
ок
I've been having a lot of punk recently. This one is at least listenable, most of the songs have some musicality to them. Stand-out: On the Roof
I didn't take good notes on this album, so this is generic. There were some good songs, some that were less good. They definitely have their own sound, making it seem repetitive. Each song and lyrics had depth, just a lot of similar cords and melodies over and over. I enjoyed it though, but nothing groundbreaking.
No punk album should last longer than 20 minutes if It’s always going to be the same song over and over and over and over. At least these are catchy. I’m ok with it, just not blown away as with nearly all punk.
This was a cool punk album, and I enjoyed the first run through. I wanted to give it a second listen but my heart wasn’t in it after a few songs. Just kinda blended together. So while I appreciated it for its genre, I wouldn’t come back to it.
Good UK punk rock album from the late 1970s. It isn't angry punk like most in the genre but a more fun album. The production (thanks to John Leckie as the producer) is better than an most punk albums. I'm not very into the genre so I will give it 3 but overall it is a good albm.
Pretty good for the umpteenth British punk album, but it's just as repetitive as the rest of them.
The version on Spotify has Gary Gilmores Eyes on it, which drags this up to a 3
5/10
Younger me would have liked this a lot
Meh Brit punk band.
Sounds like late 70s grunge. Lyrics are too repetitive though.
Clean instrumental performances and clear lyrics. Quite a few catchy (short) tunes. I could probably tolerate a couple of songs and then break to something else more substantial; tough to listen to the album in entirety.
Commercial opportunity.
I don’t like the British 70s/80s punk stuff, but this was surprisingly ok. Every song was a bit unique. I’ll probably never listen again, but it was a decent journey.
A very Sex Pistols/Dead Kennedys esque band. I'd never heard of The Adverts, but this album was ok. Certainly have to be in the mood for this one.
La primera canción está muy muy bien. El resto del disco mantiene, pero no supera ese punto alto
For the genre, a four. For my taste, a three.
Wow, the drop in quality between track 1 and 2 is astounding, the mix sounds awful and the song is painfully generic (besides the bass solo). I always get disappointed when a late 70's punk band I've never heard of appears on this list, because I know it is going to be one of the blandest and most repetitive albums I've heard. However, I thought the first song was really good. It had decent production, the song structure was interesting, and it had a good melody. But then for the rest of the album they said "What if we didn't do that. Let's just write the same punk song everyone else already has 12 times". This came out in '78 there really is no excuse for this to be on the list. This album came out after: The Ramones, The Clash, Television, Pink Flag, and Talking Heads. Talking Heads basically started the New Wave movement. You know, as in THE NEW WAVE OF PUNK. This album came out too late and is way to generic to be on this list. The main riff of Newboys sounds like something The Shaggs (literal children) would write. I'm just now realizing that the Shaggs' album came out in 1969, almost a whole decade before this album. Man, now I wish that the Shaggs were on this list instead of this forgettable British band no one has heard of. Low 3.
Never even heard of them before now but they are one of the more accomplished punk bands I've heard. Although every track (as usual) descends into the common guitar wall and tempo there is enough variety here to keep you engaged. I'm left wondering what happened to them, they have glimpses of what could be!
It’s decent but there’s better punk albums out there.
This is all the same song.
Schrabbeliger brit rock, hält was er verspricht, aber nichts was im Kopf bleibt.
Probably not something I'll return to, but not bad. Perfectly decent UK punk.
It's fine. Punk is a weird genre for me, I really like the Clash, the Stooges, and a song here or there by the Ramones or the Offspring. I HATE a lot of punk, though, most notably the Sex Pistols. I honestly can't tell you why. This, though, this is fine. It sounded like punk, it never annoyed me, but I don't really think I would listen to it again, and I was over it toward the end. Maybe I just can't handle a whole punk album? This ill probably make sense only to me, but I really enjoy a half of a peanut butter and pickle sandwich. It's weird, but it works. But I don't like that second half. It's just gross. By that point, the ways it doesn't work are now more prominent than the ways it does. That might be me and punk. I just can't do a whole sandwich. I think I'm going to go with a three, but I'm in a pretty good mood, this might score a two on another day.
последователи the clash и sex pistols - как минимум не лучше
everything you’d expect from a 70s punk/new wave album
Ganska bra faktiskt.
I didn’t really rate it, I liked the idea but it didn’t groove
Probably a good album, but too much Machester Rock makes this list a very dull listen. 3/5
Tää on jäänyt multa kuuntelematta vaikka aikalailla muu aikakauden punkit onkin tsekattu. Ihan mukiin menevä pläjäys, mutta ei ehkä eroa kamalasti muista seisarin lopun levyistä paljoakaan. Vaatii ehkä uudemman kuuntelun. 3/5
Started with promise, finished in a blaze of "meh"
Noisy but same level noise
An okay album but a lot of the songs sound the same.
Not a bad listen.
It’s a serviceable early punk album - crunchy and snarly in all the right ways - but the comparison to Never Mind the Bollocks - ESPECIALLY as I only have 15 albums left to this list and I haven’t seen the Sex Pistols on here yet, seems dim, moot, and not apt. I think I’d downgrade my belief in the NME’s critical judgment severely if I finished this list and the 2nd most-important album of the 20th century (behind Sgt Pepper) wasn’t on here. And now for some Adverts.
Not bad ad punk goes, but nothing special. No reason for it to be on this list.
This one just didn’t grab me at all, though I can see how it was influential. Idk, I heard a bit of early REM in there? Underwhelming though
Punk rock. Ni fu ni fa.
Un poco todo igual. Nada nuevo.
This hard rockin', fun stuff - not highly nuanced or varied, but a decent listen.
High energy
As far as the early British punk albums go, this sounds like one of the better ones. Music to make you strut but also break stuff
Solid 3.5
Generic punky rock and roll. Nothing special here I’m afraid.
yes
It's alrigh!
It's a solid version of early punk. It just doesn't do anything special.
Stand outs: One Cord Wonders On the roof I really enjoyed my listen through on this record. I usually bash on the early punk projects we see on here, but this one was very very interesting. I love the riffs, but some of the substance within the music is bland and not so replayable. I was genuinely shocked when I saw this dropped in 78. It doesn’t sound nearly THAT dated
Just OK on this one. A pleasant enough listen but the songwriting and tone all felt pretty same-y to me.
ALERT... ALERT.. It's my highest rating ever for a punk rock album; it wasn't terrible. That is all.
I read somewhere once that HG Ginger and Ridley Scott had an extremely limited props budget for Alien. So, rather than trim the cinematic ambition, Giger built models of sections of the eponym; Scott then used tricks of light and shadow to suggest at the fearsomeness of the aggressor. Don’t show, don’t tell. So, The Adverts aren’t one chord wonders. But, like the best of their peers, it’s actually fascinating to see what they created out of a limited (self-imposed? one can't always tell) musical palette. There’s a wave of energy, anchored by sometimes unexpected melodic choices. Not at all making it up as they went along, but nonetheless preserving a spontaneous enthusiasm that … well, yeah. Not a big punk fan but I like this.
It was OK. I kind of got some Buzzcocks vibes from this album but overall the songs just didn't really resonate with me. I swear I've heard Gary Gilmore's Eyes somewhere before and that was easily my favorite song here. Not bad. I'd reconsider trying this one again down the road.
all british punk rock sounds the same. this entire album felt like one long song
Enjoyable, I really liked the bass on this one. Gary Gilmore's Eyes is the highlight for me.
good ig
Solid Punk rock
Good, classic punk.
