Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Somewhere, there's a cool album in here. At it's best, it kind of sounds like early Pink Floyd mixed with the hard edged British rock of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. However, every song overstays it's welcome by a good five minutes. Unless it's one of the spoken word interludes with random noises, which overstays it's welcome by however long it is. I guess you had to be there on a crazy amount of LSD to fully appreciate it. 2.5 stars.
2 fucking hours!?!?
Yeah. Someone took a bunch of drugs and thought they had a great idea. Would this be better without the random sound effects? Would it still be below average? Should this be on the list at all? No, Yes, and No.
Ugh.
Good lord was that unnecessarily long. Would have much preferred that as a tight 40 minute album.
So this was just spacey weird. I took away a star for all the inane narratives. Maybe if I was on drugs I would get it but then again.
I like goofy stuff, but even I have my limits! I think I would have liked it more if it wasn't live or wasn't quite so long.
Jam bands cap at 2 stars
Is this a 1 or a 2? On the plus side: much of this music is decent. These are not bad instrumentalists, and there's some good composition in there; at times this really rocked. On the negative side: it's way too fucking long. I get that they're going for a jam band sound here, but some of this stuff just draaaaaaaaags forever. What would be fine as a 20 second bridge or guitar solo is grating after 100 seconds on repeat. Also, this is a live album?? It doesn't sound like a live album beyond the audio quality being a bit shitty. They're just using "live album" as an excuse to play long versions of previously written songs. My general rule of thumb on here is to give a 1 to any album that I can't force myself to finish. However, I did legitimately enjoy bits of this album. I can imagine a version where the runtime of every song is cut in half and I give this a 4. I think there's enough good to push this to a 2, but I did not care for your bloated chicanery here, gentlemen, and you can't make me listen to all of it. Harrumph. 1.8
Fucking way too long and way too weird.
It is weird and way too long. Whatever the meaning of this album is got lost really early on me
It looses a star just for being a double album. Long, rambling psych rock tracks…..and the ones with only spoken word-nope, nope
It's with a heavy heart that I say this is total bilge. And the main reason is that they seem to have accidentally left endless loads of nothing on the record, in between which a very occasional song breaks out. And this - let's not forget - goes on for well over two hours. The songs that do exist in here are sort of vaguely OK, and if the whole thing lasted 25 minutes or so, it'd probably be acceptable fare. But it doesn't and it isn't. No thanks!
Motörhead
I could get into some of this, but the recording is really not good. Makes it tough to listen to. Also, this is way too long. By like an hour and a half. Again, I kinda like the music. I just don’t like this recording. LSD seems mandatory for this epic. Tedious otherwise.
Naw
Didn't mind some of the jammy bits, rest wasn't for me
2,5
some songs are way too long
So very wanky. Yet again, I am not down with prog or prog adjacent rock. I will be forever grateful that Lemmy got canned from this band. Motorhead FTW!
Made by people on drugs for people on drugs. Unfortunately I wasn't on drugs but by the end of it definitely needed a load of drugs. Man.
Not my thing but to be fair I didn’t drop acid before listening.
Early hard (metal) rock. I wanted to like it, but it was just too long and tiresome, with relentless guitar riffs.
Just an all around boring album that doesn't feel particularly ambitious or interesting.
another one i was excited about. great spacy, trippy grooves -- but overall didn't dig the spoken word intermissions and it ultimately just went on way too long.
Fine to middling and fucking weird.
I can see why this was popular when it came out. Pink Floyd did space rock way better though
Maybe this is super influential or whatever but I just found it boring.
fine
Two hours? It’s just too much. I can handle this in small doses. One or two tracks per day
Idk I know some people like these crazy drugged out riff frenzies live but it’s just not my thing. Maybe if this was all a studio album I’d feel different. This album leans more into the drugs than the rock n roll so there’s not much to grab onto here. I think these dudes can shred but damn let’s get some actual songs going. Just another sabbath rip off with nothing to take away tbh. I swear If the 1001 gods end this week on some red hot chilli peppers shit I’m gonna KMS.
Long instrumentals. Boring lyrics
I like the idea for this album but it probably came out too late to be innovative at all and it's too stuck in the 60's/70's to have the really hard rock stoner aesthetic that would suit the subject matter and theme a lot better. As it is, it's just a winding, unremarkable, decidedly average psychadelic rock album. Nothing really sticks out, but as a whole it's not that bad. There are plenty of other albums of this type I'd rather listen to. None of the instrumentalists really seem as talented as they may actually be; you'd never know because the songs are simplistic despite having plenty of improvised soloing. Really didn't need this to be live, it adds nothing and the recording quality actively makes it worse. I might end up listening to a studio album from these guys because the potential is there but it isn't shown in this.
Sometimes this album list really baffles me. At some point in trying to compile 1001 albums, does the author just run out of ideas? Does a devilish sense of humor make them try to sneak some piece of crap into the list to see if anyone notices? I ask in particular when I am struggling to get through Space Ritual by Hawkwind. I like a lot of off the wall stuff, and I generally get excited when I discover a cool band that I never heard of before. But this almost feels like a joke, but instead of just hitting it with a 1 and quitting it, I feel stuck trying to understand it. Having never heard them before, I got Black Sabbath vibes pretty much immediately from the first track. I didn't hate it, but it was hard to hear because this is a live album. That's the big problem I had this with this one. Live albums are already a bit of a tough sell. Either it is a masterfully recorded live album (like Eagles' Hell Freezes Over) or else it somehow captures of the live energy of a band in a way that a studio never can (like Grateful Dead or Phish). This album did neither. It's poorly recorded, often muddy, the lyrics sometimes indecipherable, sometimes the band skews out of key. It makes for a poor first impression of this band for me. I am wondering what their studio records sound like. I'm not sure I'm curious enough to go give it a listen. Ultimately, I am not leaving here a fan of Hawkwind (that's a dumb band name, btw), and truly wondering why this album merited a position on this list.
Is ok, but meandering live psychedelic rock isn't really something that captures my imagination.
One disc was enough.
a 2+ hour long psychedelic space-themed rock opera AND it's a live album? why is this challenge constantly putting me in worse and more torturous saw traps.
hawkwind's unique sci-fi prog rock sounds awesome on paper, but a TWO-PLUS-HOUR-LONG DOUBLE LIVE ALBUM is not the ideal on-ramp for new listeners. i'm not even sure how many existing listeners want this... favorites: down through the night, lord of light, master of the universe
ok this'll be a trip for sure. not a fan of the intro, but the beat of the first actual song is good. not sure about the vocals yet. talk about a concept album, damn. even cutting the remaster bonus tracks, it runs an hour and a half. with seamless transitions on every track. the songs are jams orgone accumulator--zz top vibes on this one the spoken word is ... something. sonic attack--oh. my. 1.5 hour space rock opera. ok. that was an experience. props for having a strong concept and carrying it through. very thorough, dare i say flawless, execution. tragically, this is not my vibe. the musical parts were fine. singing was hit or miss. spoken word, though... no thanks i'll pass on that one. 2.49 rounded to 2/5.
Esperaba muchísimo más con esa tremenda portada. No me interesó nada del álbum
Eh
No live albums! The only redeeming part of this marathon album were some of the really heavy base lines and riffs.
i don't man all these rock albums with these crazy sounds just are not my thing i guess... some songs are decent but it's just a little too much, especially when some songs are completely random and dissonant noise. still better than frank zappas thing though, genuinely worse three songs i've ever heard in my life
A little too long and repetitive but I did enjoy some songs
2/3
I could not get into it, even as background music. The singer's voice was not pleasant to me neither.
I had a boyfriend when I was young that was a huge Hawkwind fan, I never was. It really seemed like teenage boy music. I can admire it a little more nowadays but it still doesn’t float any of my boats.
My friend DC said he likes the idea of Hawkwind more than the reality, and I have to agree. The Bevis Frond did it better. Plus, I can't help but think of Spinal Tap during some of this. Still, no hate. I'm sure it was a good time if you were there.
Nope
WTH did I just listen too? Weird but I was kinda digging it.. Like 70s C&C?
Looks like it's regarded as highly influential, and I'm sure it is, but I think I need more context and more exposure to be interested.
To take a note from the album, you shouldn’t do that. Don’t make me listen to a 2 hour live album under any circumstances. And the songs are way too long and make no sense. The space crap is also just not my thing at all. Would give it a 1.5 if I could. Not totally unlistenable tho so a 2.
Ha‘s irgendwänn halt ghört. Über 2h halt z lang
viiiel zu lang leider
painful, janky, over the top prog, urr "space" rock.
Down Through the Night // Lord of Light // Brainstorm // 2.5/5
2 hours is always a tough sell - I don't feel the album quite earns it's length. I appreciated parts of the album, and feel that bands like King Gizzard and The Flaming Lips must love this shit, but I'm ready to listen to something else now. 4/10
Took "space rock" literally.. it's just endless cosmic traffic jams here. Every track feels like a jam session on autopilot with some psychedelic navel-gazing thrown in for good measure. It's exhausting, to be honest. Cool album art, though. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions - Down Through the Night - Orgone Accumulator
Guess you had to be there. And high. Really high.
Decent enough and definitely hits the mark in giving a cosmic otherworldly vibe. Just goes on a bit too long and ultimately ends up dragging.
Psychedelic guitars and drums good. Too heavy on the whale sounds. Weird ass vocals— akin to casting spells and seances. Made Britt anxious.
4/10 Far, far,FAR too long. It seemed to just keep going. There's some average songs in here, but the relentless fiddling and widdling is so tiresome. I don't think there is much talent in hitting pentatonic notes relentlessly for 10mins. Sure, you might enjoy doing it in a jam session, but don't inflict it on the rest and of us. Oh, and the cod dramatics is just lame
Admittedly I didn't listen to the whole thing, it's a live show and I listened to half of it so I got the vibe. If I was at this show (and on any/all substances required) this would have received a much higher rating. It was decent, but it's made for someone in a very specific state of mind.
This was a decent record overall. The tracks blend well into the next, but there's a lot of filler. I'm not too keen on the time-wasting, so I'm dropping a point. Favourite Track(s): Orgone Accumulator Least Favourite Track(s): Sonic Attack, Welcome To The Future
2.5/3. Meh, not impressed. Pretty repetitive. Dull.
This starts off stronger than it finishes, you can almost hear them slowly losing steam as it goes on. I’m sure this was an incredible live experience back in the ’70s, especially for the LSD crowd, but as an album it doesn’t really translate the same way.
I'm not a fan of live albums in the first place, and as far as live albums go, this isn't a particularly good one. It also goes on for too long.
The problem may have been, that there was a Stonehenge monument on stage, that was in danger, of being crushed, by a dwarf.
It all blended together to me.
I think you had to be there.. and high.
I dunno man. Seems a bit shite to me
Song title will be like GAZORPAZORP THE EATER OF WORLDS and it’ll be the most average 9 minute song you’ve heard in your life
wierd
It's a super long double live album of Prog Rock, and it's relentless... The basslines are super driving and hypnotic, but the synths are a total mess, creating a repetitive groove that's mind-numbing torture. There are these totally pretentious faux-Shakespearean monologues about "Sonic Attacks" and "Orgone Accumulators". By the time the 14-minute guitar solo was over, I'd forgotten every song before it, it's exhausting and never fucking ends.
It was definitely different and interesting. No that I really enjoyed it. I didn't find myself jamming out to it at all, but I did find myself intrigued at the space noises in the album. Was a cool concept, but execution was pretty ok for me.
Didn't hate it, probably wouldn't relistened
Overlong and so very poorly mixed. I don't know if that was a financial limitation or what but it flattened out an album that clearly had some virtuosity going for it if nothing else.
Could me 3/5 but too long and live
i’m not QUITE sure this needed to be 2hrs long. i liked some of the guitar stuff going on but i did check out about 1hr 20mins in unfortunately
I think I need some LSD to understand this shit. This stuff may fuck if you can feel it completely. For me it's just like some incoherent musical sounds that had a stunning idea. Love using of all instruments, but I just can't listen to space rock tracks for more than 3 minutes. Too psychedelic for me
Really don’t get the need for this album given that the show was designed to be an audio-visual experience and therefore would presumably be best experienced as such. Not a fan of live albums anyway. This grew on me on second listen (yes, I did force myself through it twice) but tbh the bar was pretty low to start off with. The sound is terrible though and all the extended jams are tiresome. Not sure I would even enjoy it as a live experience
My first thought upon hearing their name and reading that the album is about space was Spinal Tap’s “Stonehenge” era. I was not particularly looking forward to this one. But I was pleasantly surprised, somewhat. They are good musicians, and there are parts and riffs that are great, like “Time We Left…”, which is reminiscent of Black Sabbath. But some parts, like the spoken word stuff and the endless solos are a slog. Case in point is probably their best effort here, “Orgone Accelerator,” which has a great riff and catchy lyrics. But does it have to be 10 minutes long? No. It does not. That’s this album in a nutshell. Even now I am wavering between a 3 (some parts rocked!) and a 2 (when I remember the lowlights)
a bit much
another album where i just wasn’t super interested to continue. it sounded nice but i just don’t think it’s something i’d ever really crave.
Interesting, but not for me
This is one of those album titles/covers that made me groan when I saw it and my instinct was correct. Not at all for me but then again I haven’t been on a never ending acid trip since the 70s. I haven’t no doubt this was a wild concert to experience but so much is lost in making it a poor quality recording.
Wow this was a long one. And I wish it was better! There is some great rock parts here, with awesome drumming and a great guitar tone. But man as far as songs go most of these just don’t hold together. And don’t get me started on the weird spoken word sections!
Meh, låter lite samma hela tiden typ? kanske är live remasterns fel vem vet.
This is exactly the kind of band that demonstrates why punk was so desperately needed. Apparently known as space rock, it just sounds like self indulgent noise to me and very dated. I'll not score it too low though as perhaps it's important in the history of music. To me it is at one far end of the very complex era that was the 1970s. Thank goodness for Bowie, funk, disco and punk for pulling us far away from hippy nonsense like Hawkwind.
Never heard of Hawkwind before or this quote on quote "epic journey across space and time". Turned out to be a very long and dull journey. One where I constantly found myself asking, "Are we there yet?"
Okay weird, not my thing, but also fun and I kinda got into a few songs - I would say 2.5
im so tired of listening to this shit
Er, what was that?! Far too long, with little to enjoy other than some great basslines. Dull, indulgent space rock. An extra star has been added for the spoken word sections, unintentionally hilarious.
Didn’t enjoy this one much.
Unless your band is metal or goth or industrial or otherwise terrible, if you put out a two hour long album, there is going to be some decent stuff on there, even if it’s only by accident That is certainly true of this monstrosity of an album. They have some cool Sabbathy moments, some cool Pink Floydy moments, and some less cool proto-punk moments. But none of those moments is worth listening to an album this long, especially when a lot of it sucks.
ya kötü değil ama çok aynı tarz şooldu ytr
it was alright, i didn’t finish it
4/10… metal / psychedelic rock / *1973
There's some decent hard-charging rock music underneath all the sludge and pretentious blather. You need to slog through a lot of crap to find it.
Important, maybe? But I couldn't take it.
SNORK. 2t12m. Hørt på vei til og fra jobb 08/01/26. klarte ikke fullføre. Sikkert fint som bakgrunnsmusikk på et dårlig nachspiel.
Musikk som durer og går, med ganske irriterende space-lyder innimellom.
Def spacey. Hard to get through
Инопланетный концепт выдержан, но бля лайв альбом еще и двойной....
Probably would have been a 3 if it wasn’t so damn long.
Na trenutke zanimljivo i dosta progy, na trenutke dosadno za riknut. 2/5, 4/10
Хубава музика, ужасен запис. Тъй като е класация за албум, това е лош албум
I prefer music that is not like this. I will only give it a 2 because I did dig the driving base on some songs.
Pure wankery from start to finish. I'm 14 And Space Is Deep. Fave tracks: Master of the Universe
Live..
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should
Oof, a live album AND it is a double...it's too much. The music was decent which was at least a bit of redemption, but then they started jabbering on about space and whatnot. I think I'll pass on any future listens.
Psychedelic music not my thing. Most of it bored me to death. I can hear the influence it had on bands I like though.
2 hours 12 Minutes? are you fucking kidding me?^ it's not like i didn't hate everything about it, some parts are quite good but everything is too long and I do not take any drugs that would change my opinion on this.
The music itself is good, but its just wayy too long and monotone for my taste so this is not a good one imo
I love having all these double album live albums.
Great musicians but so long and lacking in joy
It was okay
This is potentially a really cool album but faces multiple hurdles. At first I thought this is like a punk rock Emerson Lakes and Palmer but it just drug on too long. After a few songs just all blends together. The recording quality is pretty crappy. If you are doing a live album, it shouldn't sound like I'm listening from the street to some dudes practicing in their garage. Cut out half the songs and get a sound engineer and this is a great album.
OVERALL THOUGHTS (2.5/5) I think this was one of those albums where listening to it was mostly fun as a historical document to see where a bunch of different genres branched off from. I think this would have been a SICK show to see live but listening back to it only offers so much. I can't help but compare it to other rock or jazz live albums where the musicianship is on such a high level compared to this. The soundscapes and synth work here is very neat but are mostly found in the interludes of the songs. It was fun overall on a song to song basis but at almost two hours the full album wore me down a bit STRAY THOUGHTS - Giving King Gizz vibes - THEY HAVE FLUTE - It's kind of camp I dig it - "Space does not care" - Decent amount of power chord chuging on this record - Always appreciate having saxophone in a jam band - Having Lemmy play power chords on the bass while the guitar solos is good fun - Like I don't think albums should inherently be limited by length but MY GOD IS THIS LONG FAV TRACKS: Down Through The Night, Lord of Light, Orgone Accumulator LEAST FAV TRACKS: Brainstorm,
Found this pretty boring. I love the idea of the band, and 'space rock' as a concept, but this didn't do much for me at all. Lots of pretty forgettable pentatonic riffs and empty melodies. I'm sure it would have been cool to see live.
do yourself a favor. Save 2 hours and 12 minutes uf your life by skipping this album. God awful. Double album - why? I only give it 2 out of pity and because at least they tried...
At times interesting, but overall, there's a reason you don't remember this album—or this group.
I can get down with some rockin' psych cosmic storytelling, but why the hell is this two hours long? And live? No way it should be on this list.
I listened to at least some of this album. I don't really like live albums and this one often sounded rough. The music seems fine, not really remarkable. I love the cover though! That's a 5/5.
2,5
I like this kinda odd music but I'm just not big fan of most live albums, there was nothing too outstanding to make up for it. That combined with the length probably keeps me from listening to it again anytime soon.
2.5
I did 👏 not 👏 like 👏 this 👏 If I could give it 1.5 I would but I don’t think this really deserves a 1.
I just am not into psychedelic rock right now
It’s too much.
This was prolly a real experience to have been at and would perhaps make for a good concert film, and it is prolly satisfying if you already like them, but I could not stay interested long enough to finish the first disc.
Þetta er allt eins. Í tvo klukkutíma. Það má hafa gaman af geim-effectunum og einræðurnar eru skemmtilega hallærislegar, en þið þurfið ekki að hlusta á þetta.
This is like if Fatboy Slim played actual instruments. I am so sick of hearing the same driving drum and bass lines for nearly 90 minutes. The tracks individually are pretty cool, but the album experience is a tough, tough listen
I'd love this high, but I've rated every other album sober so it seems quite unfair if I was to make an exception for one album. The music itself is decent and I like the space themes, but it gets too much even after the first side, let alone through to the full two hours.
Not for me
This was a trip. Parts were great parts were trash.
Nežinau. Labai daug triukšmo, daug kartų teko nusiimti ausines pažiūrėti, ar sunkvežimis ant manęs nevažiuoja.
Not my cup of tea.
When in found its grove it was pretty cool, but the constant talking/storytelling just ruined a lot of the songs for me. I am gonna guess it was for a certain time and place but today it is just annoying. Also this album is just to damn long for what it is.
Like Space Rock version of Phish. Too repetitive.
I don't mind 'Silver Machine' but 2 hours 12 of this stuff is not a good investment of my time. I skipped through and gave it about 15 minutes. Sorry if I've broken the rules!
2h15 of psychedelic grunge trash. Almost so bad it’s good, but not quite. Only rating two stars because the feverish madness of it paired quite well with a comically busy and chaotic day in the office.
i actually enjoyed this album much more than i thought i would. it was exciting at times and very original/creative. only reason i've given it such a low score is becuase i absolutely cannot see myself going back and listening to this. i have very little interest in live albums and this album doesn't change that. it was VERY long too - was only listenable while doing other things and having this on in the background.
Space opera in all ways possible. Flutes, synths, electronic reverbs of the spaciest kinds.
Very long, very experimental, soms great rock sounds but just to much over the top.
Too long and meandering. It was fine, but nothing I'd pick to listen to again. Sorry, Lemmy :( 2.49/5
Nicht das meine
Cmon man. Jammy nonsense. Maybe if I were there I would have had a good time. Unnecessary 2 hours of stuff. 3.0
Groupe inconnu. =>2/5
This prog/psychedelic scene just isn’t for me. Clearly great musicians, but self-serious to the point of unintentionally sounding like a joke. 2 stars because when the band actually just rocks out, it can be pretty cool. But those parts are too few and far between.
Excessively long tracks. Bass playing is good and the rest is mediocre.
Too weird and then just boring. No reason to be that long
Far too aimless for me. 2/5
The first disc was better than the second
I like the spunk of the drummer. Generally, not a fan of this music. Pretty unimaginative and repetitive. It has got me thinking a lot about space though. Is it interesting? Can't help but feel there is more on earth these guys could have been exploring. SPACE IS DEEP. There's no reverb in space fellas. NO SOUND at all. Space may suck.
Don’t have time for this space bullshit today
2.18
Live psychedelic space rock? Lemmy Kilmister on bass? Extended guitar, flute, and saxophone solos and wild synth experimentation? This is right up my alley. It sounds like it’s a direct influence for King Gizzard’s metal albums (Infest the Rats Nest and PetroDragonic Apocalypse). What could go wrong? A lot apparently. I’m not sure if it’s just the mix or if the band just isn’t really tight enough, but it sounds like they’re just playing on top of each other rather than actually playing together. It all builds into a wall of sound, but not in a good way. That said, I didn’t hate the album. It’s a great concept and all the pieces are all there; it just didn’t really come together. I was going to say I think I like more space and less rock in my space rock, but I love the aforementioned King Gizzard albums and they’re definitely more rock than space. Overall, I’m happy to have listened to it, but I can’t see myself returning to it.
Favorite Track: Down Through the Night
They were having a lot of fun but damn this was tedious
I might have gotten my hopes to high with the cover and the promise of space psychedelic rock. But honestly it was just alittle boring for me. And a lot of it was forgettable or underwhelming. I do think the biggest thing that hurt this album is it doesn’t have a sense of fun or humor. It’s just so bland.
These dudes tried way too hard to be some next big thing. Easy music to burn a couple hours while cleaning the pool…
Did I finish this? Absolutely not. Did I hate what I did listen? Not entirely. Does this kind of trash belong on a list of albums that you should listen to before you die? Only if you’re looking to rush to that day
I can appreciate the playing, but it is just not for me.
Live albums are so rarely good. This doesn't really buck the trend. It's fine, but it's so self indulgent and the music just exists. Perhaps it would've been wild to see it in person back in the day, but the recording quality isn't great and the music isn't strong enough to carry it.
I feel like I would have liked this more if I was on lsd
dozlaboga dosadno i neoriginalno, mjestimice jako krindž. loše zvuči
Uhh...No. Awesome album art though.
Weird sound, that is, however, undoubtedly successfully brings "spacey" vibes to the listener. A nice little piece of what is nowadays known as classic progressive rock — definitely not one my favourite genres. One of the key features of the album that hints to it — despite the uniqueness of every song, they "flow" into each other, making the feeling of a very long never ending composition. It's really long as well, and has a lot of strange songs, that consist of nothing but weird noises (it adds up to the spacey theme though). Saved one single song from the album — Lord of Light, the most "normal" from the track list. Want to relisten the Velvet Underground now.
It all sound the same. Psych but a little harder psych rock than I usually like. One good song
Not often that I don't finish an album but this was too long and low quality.
It was cool, but I didn’t really wanna finish listening to the whole thing. I’m sure seeing this group live back in the day was awesome.
2/3
I hate jam bands, but I can't loathe them entirely because I love CAN. Every place has one and it would seem the UK's is Hawkwind. Here it's Grateful Dead and Phish. At least Dead had a cool name. I will accept this entry strictly as pure music knowledge as I was unaware of HW existing. That's all I have to say about them. I can't knock space rock too much because one of my favorite songs ever is "Echoes". Genres of music centered on needing drugs to be enjoyed do not gain a lot of respect from me. And I like drugs. I'm a conflicted hypocrite. Side note: I am coming to a nearly fully formed opinion on double albums. They should mostly not exist. Ever. Maybe 'The Wall' and I gave it a 2-star rating because PF had done better work.
Seriously though whoever did the artwork for the cover did an amazing job EDIT: Apparently his name was Barney Bubbles and he did some great artwork for musicians. Check out his stuff ✌️
Copia barata de the who y zeppelin. Me aburrio
This isn't my favorite genre and the tracks feel repetitive. It's not totally offensive to the ear, but it's not something I would normally put on.
A bit too long, hard to distinguish between songs, and the occasional spoken word was a bit annoying. Made sure to listen to the proper (pre-2007) version but still too long. Hard to rate really.
This sounds like a much less charming Gong. It's a good reflection of an intense hippy trance, but to my ears, it isn't very interesting nor pretty.
Nah
WAY too long. Maybe a few interesting things but I don't think I would enjoy this concert at all. 1.5/5
Well, it did sound pretty interesting, and I’m glad I’ve heard of it now, but I definitely thought it was just one really long song for about the first 20 minutes. And then the subsequent 100 minutes. (ntm.)
I try to listen through new-to-me albums at least twice. Not this one. I had to push through to get through disc 2. The band is great - if this was completely instrumental, it might have been an easier ride, but if I had to hear space ghost recite one more Spinal Tap worthy poem, I might have started to cramp. There will be blood from orifices indeed - ugghhhh
What the hell was this - loved this then hated then confused then got a bit bored
Remove the live albums. There were some ok moments but no-one’s listening to all of this shit
Odd
Some really nice riffs. Just way too long- jam bands are not my thing. 2/5
If I wanted to hear oversaturated and rambling nonsense, this would be my jam.
I saw the runtime on this a few weeks back and have been saving it for when... I really wanted to torture me with a 2 hour long record. Never heard space rock before, didn't even know there was a genre called that. The record started off pretty interesting. Pretty gritty rock sound, and it had my interest up. But the longer the album progressed, the duller it became. Though I thought the 'Orgone Accumulator' and 'Time We Left This World Today' definitely had something, by the end of the album I feel like it basically is the same thing playing as when I started it. And the album suffers immensely from just casual grazing and letting minutes pass by without anything interesting happening. It's by no means the worst album I've heard on this list, but it's way too long and slow for my taste.
Kind of cool album cover and the sound of the first few tracks was decent. That is all the good I have to say. The spoken-word parts were terrible, the album is way, way, WAY too long. As a short instrumental progressive rock album, I guess it would’ve worked. As it stands now it was a slog to get through.
Take me back to Earth. Not for me.
Early 70’s Art rock
Yeah u know guitars are guitaring. I like that. But it's just not that good.
This was a long album. I think it's live? Some of the spoken word stuff was kinda weird - don't know if i need a monologue about space orgasms. Some of the long psych jams felt like unfocused wankery (maybe apt for space orgasms?)
Trippy, but not groundbreaking.
You’re in a cult. It’s rare I think something is “dumb” but Space Ritual fits perfectly fits the description.
very wooshy
I don’t understand the music these kids are listening to nowadays.
This is pretty bad. And it's a double album. Doubles have to be pretty damn good to justify a 2-hour listening experience, and this one definitely does not do that. There are some brief interesting moments. "Seven by Seven" has some good instrumentals. Actually, the rock instrumentals are the best part. Once they start getting really "space-y" and techno, I'm out. And the instrumentals also go on so long without doing much that's interesting. You could "fix" this album by relying less on technology; their style of play gives is enough Space feel on its own, a light sprinkle of synth moments and vocal effects would hammer in the theme enough. And cut the instrumental moments in half. There are plenty of interesting things in them that would be more impactful if it didn't take forever to get there. And that would also cut the length of the album down by like 30-45 minutes. Make those changes, and I might actually enjoy listening to this album. Favorite Song(s): Space is Deep
Must admit I fast forwarded and skipped my way through this. Some cool moments but mostly all blended together to me. (1.5 stars)
Too psychedelic for my taste. Was longing it to be over
I think you have to be on drugs to really enjoy the listening experience.
Annoying and too long.
Space rock... a little long for my taste, too much going on, too much talking
A live 70’s rock double-album with a bunch of songs that are way too long and includes Star Wars sound effects in the background? No thanks…life is too short.
Far too long and self indulgent. Not for me. Thank goodness Lemmy got out.
When I saw genres such as "space rock", "prog rock", "psycehdelic rock", and "proto-punk" all listed for this album, I wasn't feeling very confident in this being the type of album I was going to enjoy. So when I also found out that the original version of this album was only 86 minutes instead of the 132 minute version that is linked to this project, you better believe I ran toward that original, shorter version. Even the shorter version seemed too damn long. This was basically like one giant not-so-great space age jam session. Parts of it were enjoyable, but parts of it were literally just annoying space noises.
More like Space Shitual.
I wouldn’t listen again. Revolutionary in terms of pushing the envelope of art but not for me
damn this shit was long af and mostly pretty boring. Some cool physc stuff scattered, but it would almost be impossible not to at least have something interesting over 2 hours of music. I mean maybe this would have been hype to see live, but definitely not sitting in front of my desk. Very weak 2
I really like 70s psychedelic rock. But this is some other monster. Horrible, muddy, messy, bizarre and while I hate to echo every other reviewer, it is just far too long. What a waste of time.
Space! Space! Spacey! Space! TWANG!!!
Ots a lot to take in, a big wig out that feels like it never really goes anywhere.
Didn't finish it but gave side 1 a listen. It's was insanely long, wasn't really my thing as I've never touched psychedelics but I think it does have a place on the list
I wasn’t on the drugs needed at 8:30am on my way to work to be able to get into this album. A 1.5 hours long space rock opera live album. C’mon man. Its not bad but I can’t do it 4.2/10
I tried...not for me
This album didn't need to be this long. The first disc felt fun, heavy, speacy, a bit catchy, filled with nice riffs... It was good, nothing very special but at least it was tolerable, even though at the end I feel tired. Therefore, if I was feeling already tired at the end of the first disc, you could imagine how I felt listening to the second one. It wasn't fun. It is the same material and ideas from the first one.
sounds like a mix of a jam band and stoner metal. the sound is interesting, but as with jam bands the songs get redundant after a few minutes into them. a nine minute song that repeats the same riffs over and over could be cut in half and be better.
I don't despise it, but it's 1 hour and 26 minutes (excl. extended edition) of whooshing sounds with the occasional bit of pretentious monologue to break it up.
Long monologues, repeating riffs.
Space rock really is something. After the first hour it didn't seem that terrible. I think it would be significantly better without the monologs. Anyway, this is something I am not playing again in the neatest future.
So long and only some of it entertaining. 2.
This was a very long album. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 1/5
Its not all that bad musically but did it have to be a 2hr live set, not great wont be coming back but I have heard much worse so it gets a 2.
This was jammy, self-indulgent, and kind of a slog. But in general I like some jammy, trippy music. I think if this were trimmed way down it would sit better but as is, no one has time for all this.
Too weird and psychedelic for me I’m afraid !
Never listened to Hawkwind before, and I suspect this isn't a good place to start. I quite like the hypnotic repetition in some of the tracks, but the muddy sound doesn't help. Finally, the spoken word tracks are terrible, sounds like a Spinal Tap sequence spoof.
Hawktuah. Not the right moment to listen. Soz guys. Actually you know what, just a bit unremarkable for me
2/5
The first song I thought "on maybe these next two hours won't be so bad :)" and then the two hours passed.
Maybe a bad copy-live
In Lemmy’s later years he was still complaining about his falling out with Hawkwind and how he felt wronged by them. That’s a bit like if Dave Mustaine was kicked out of Megadeth and started Metallica, and resented it.
What a waste of potential. This band never reached world fame not because of their singing, drumming, guitar playing, or even their songs. All of that is enjoyable and ahead of its time. The thing that makes this band unlistenable is the terrible decision to have someone play an instrument that is best described like the sound of a goose with someone shoving their fingers up its ass the whole time. If they kicked their friend out of the band that played that instrument, they could have been rock stars.
I'm glad that Lemmy left and formed Motorhead. This one bored me. The songs are waaaaay too long. And nothing really special is going on.
essentially skipped it. could see how this is significant as a live performance, and quite influential. not terrible tunes either, just a little too jammy for moi.
Yet another example of a rando UK band that doesn't seem like it belongs on this list. In this case some of the music was actively annoying to listen to. In particular: "Electronic No 1", "Brainstorm", "Sonic Attack", "Time We Left This World Today" (both versions), "You Shouldn't Do That". This is somewhere between a 1 and a 2.
Like a shittier Doors? Way too long for what it is. The album cover is okay.
Sounds like a proggy synth sort of Dead inspired band, but very repetitive and boring, like late stage Dead. Not all bad, just not much substance.
The album cover announces what the music confirms: these are psychedelic wannabe space rockers. But they forgot all the good songs back on earth - most of the material is very jam-like and sprinkled with lyrical nonsense - just listen to The Awakening. Nope, I didn't finish this one. 1.5/5
It wasn't too bad, but not one I would want to listen to again
Hawkwind remixing the 3 big hits again
very strange and far too long
There is some good music underneath all the madness on this album. However, the mix is shocking and it drags on forever 2/5
Fajnie się do tego obierało ziemniaki.
Okay, I’m starting to think I shouldn’t have two ‘projects’ going at the same time. I already reviewed this and hated it. My colleagues and I have a chat group where we each take turns suggesting a song to listen to. One of my colleagues suggested “Orgone Accumulator” from this album just recently as well. “Organ Accumulator” isn’t half bad. The album has grown on me a little, but I won’t up the rating because I still find it a little boring and repetitive. Lemmy’s bass work is something else though!
This feels like one of those kinds of albums which are progressively cooler the more drugs you are on. It probably also requires multiple listens to really get. And I just don't think I'll ever get around to giving it that. Standouts The Black Coridor 2/5
Space prog that didn't do much to lure me and hook me, and I normally enjoy prog style groups. There are parts I enjoy, and it gets a point for staying on theme, even with the intermissions, but as far as live albums go, not sure what specifically makes this one special. And it's longer than it needs to be.
Loved the first song and was annoyed by the end. Little ability to change pace or play with my emotions
i mean... truth be told this wasn't the worst album that we've had on here. i mean sure - is jumping into a 2+ hour live album from a band that I know nothing about the best way to get introduced... probably not. but as I listened to this album, I thought about if I was at a show with some friends, perhaps partaking in the devils lettuce, that this could be more fun to listen to. as with this album/band, I figure its more about the experience and vibe rather than the recordings themselves. i think I would feel the same way about a Phish live recording - though ultimately I think their sound is more approachable. not the worst thing i've heard... but definitely a slog to get through on a random wednesday.
It was fine to have on in the background, but way too long and not interesting enough for me to finish the entire album.
The only Space Ritual I want to take part in is the Friday night drum circle in downtown Asheville, where I can leave after like 30 minutes to go drink on South Slope. This is definitely something you had to be there for to fully enjoy. Listening to it as a double-length album fifty years later, I don’t know that I fully appreciate it. Not bad, way too long, and probably need to be tripping on acid in the 70s while experiencing are the characteristics of a two.
Wow it was long
Over 2 hours of crap.
Got through it once and that was enough.
There is no place for live albums on this list (aside from Nirvana). I am even more certain that there is no place on this list for a 2hr+ live wank fest of an album.
Classic psychedelic, ok 2.5
# Album Name: Space Ritual # Artist: Hawkwind # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Poor album imo. Too fucking long as well. Just when a song gets going, its turns into a mess. Not for me. # Top Tunes: Orgone accumulator / Brainstorm # Would I listen to it again? No
There are some really good rock-n-roll passages scattered throughout the album. But the "space rock" stuff got in the way.
I guess I just didn’t find this interesting. Album was too long and most of the songs are meandering. 2/5 Won’t listen again
Didn’t listen to all of it. Not for me.
Original album length: 86:55 2007 Expanded edition: 132:59 >:0 1001 Book listing: 115:32 Apple Music: 88:00 I think the album length in the book is j̶u̶s̶t̶ ̶p̶u̶l̶l̶e̶d̶ ̶o̶u̶t̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶i̶r̶ ̶a̶s̶s̶/from a 1996 remastered CD. I'm going with the A.M. version January 21st, 2025 HL: “Lord of Light”, “Space is Deep”, “Brainstorm” Unlike some other albums with tedious spoken word sections, I actually enjoyed the scifi poetry on display here. Of course, if that's my main takeaway in a 90 minute album, there's a problem. The 2nd problem is that I can't be arsed to go through the instrumental passages I did enjoy: a departure from the last few albums this week that got at least 2 full listens. Despite the cosmic grandeur the tour was going for, I found some of the music itself straightforward, vanilla even. There are some cool saxophone solos strewn about, so thank you *checks notes* Nik Turner (1940-2022). 2.5
blah
That album cover is pretty freakin sweet. Music is alright.
This feels generous
LSD is a crazy drug
Had high hopes
This would work as an instrumental, as I do like the music a bit. But the singing brings it down quite a few notches. It also probably loses something without the visual portion of the “audio-visual experience”, where you’re just left with long stretches of not much happening, between poetry sections that are incredibly dumb by themselves.
earth calling- 5 born to go- 3 down through the night- 4 awakening- 3 lord of light- 3 the black corridor- 4 space is deep- 3 electronic no 1- 3 this shit is so boring
These guys are a less interesting version of Pink Floyd.
Rock + Poetry. Meh.
Ok background music. Bit long. Left little impressions
I am not sure what makes this influential. Was it the first time a live album audience never made a sound because they were too high? Was it the longest recorded LSD trip? Was it the first time dolphin mating calls were used in an audio recording? Nothing was terrible, just nothing was interesting. It was just indie psychedelic rock. Maybe they were the first but others have done it better. Down through the Night gave me Garden of Eden vibes. There were some cool bass parts, guitar parts and the flute was interesting at times, but everything just kept going and it wasn't something I wanted or needed to keep going. Also the lyrics were just random and so pretentious. All in all not something I need to hear again.
This album has super cool cover art. As much as I like the vibe of this music, it's a bit too much of it and all sounds pretty much the same and I'm not really into the spoken word segments. Love the bass playing but the vocals never really hit on any interesting melodies to give my ears a discernable "song". And while I appreciate extended jams and instrumentals... it's all a bit much. And just putting space sounds over top of 70's jam band rocking out, isn't really that innovative.
I shouldn’t go into live albums from artists I don’t know very well with such a bad attitude but I do. I hate slogging through SO MUCH music that I wasn’t there to witness, and is rarely indicative of whether the band is good or not within a formal recording. Live voices are typically sloppier than polished recordings. I don’t even like live recordings, for the most part, from my holy trinity bands. Hawkwind is a good prog band. The songs unfurl in epic fashion, as prog goes. These songs are groovy but they don’t torch my soul. Decent enough stuff, but being a live album, I won’t come back.
This was long and felt like the same jam over and over and over. And over. With some trippy stuff about space sprinkled about. Not terribly impressed with this show overall. A little too noisy and samesy.
This would be like listening to indie rock for the first time when you are in your classic rock/dad rock phase. Otherwise it's some decent overly long jammy space rock. Some weird vocals/spoken word stuff and impressive they did this live but i'm more interested in the actual soundscapes they create. Regardless wouldn't listen too outside of this album website.
It’s music, I guess. 3/10
SPACE IS NOT LARGE AND IT IS NOT SMALL SPACE IS DARK. SPACE DOES NOT CARE
Way too long, but it sounded alright.
Unoriginal, boring and bloated. Scraped a 2
Nah
Lemmy on the bass. Strange. Psychedelic rock live. Not much cooler my friends just noise for me
Meh
Meh
I could get into some of this, but the recording is really not good. Makes it tough to listen to. Also, this is way too long. By like an hour and a half. Again, I kinda like the music. I just don’t like this recording. LSD seems mandatory for this epic. Tedious otherwise.
Considering Lemmy was more into speed than psychedelic drugs, I'm not surprised he left this band to form Motörhead. The tracks are good for about 3 or 4 minutes, but when they're going on for 8, 10, 12 minutes with very little variation, we have a problem. They're much too samey to keep my interest. Its a shame really because the riffs here are absolutely fucking great. If you told me it was Black Sabbath, I'd believe you, it sounds very much like them. They're heavy and catchy. But then you have space noises, overly long songs and awful spoken monologues to contend with. The guitar solos are great and the rhythm section drives the tracks, really thumping away making you want to headbang. It could have been a fantastic 40 minute album, there's some solid stuff here, but unfortunately this is just too much space wankery.
Noisy
meh. okay for a British rock band.
I completely understand that this is not necessarily the best 1001 albums ever, but albums you have to listen to before you die. I get that Lemmy was a huge presence, but this is not Hawkwinds best album, but you can see the beginnings of motorhead.
Meh. Cool that they quote excerpts from Michael Moorcock's books and that he also plays with the band occasionally. I'm a fan of prog rock but I didn't really care for this album. Struck me as a little pretentious.
Space Ritual would be fine if it was just heavy 70s rock grooves and bang average singing on top, nothing fancy or flashy, just good old fashioned rock. They even got Lemmy on board for a few years for this reason, but when you're off your tits on every substance known to man you end up bastardising it like this with a litany of random noises and choices that go on for fucking AGES. There are large portions of this I'm happily jamming along to as background music, chugging heavy guitars, easy stuff, then I'm instantly turned off by the space/psychedelia/prog interludes. Gets a 2 because it's okay in places but fucking hell, don't do drugs kids.
Too much of the same
Terrible production quality. I know it's live but it sounds like it was recorded on a Radio Shack cassette recorder.
A real slog to get through
I might like this in a studio setting where all the fat is trimmed and the vocals are cleaned up, but as a 2 hour live album? Nope
Nah
