Reviews (page 6 of 7)
A live double album by a psychedelic band....this is truly going to be a test. Space sounds are the entire first song, not an auspicious start. Maybe those sounds are the Hawkwind. The singing on Born to Go sucks, but the music is cool. Psychedelic jams are not my jam. Who doesn't want some flute in their rock music...the girl from American Pie definitely does. The music could be Blue Oyster Cult. The Awakening....a reading of a stupid poem with space sounds behind it again. I bet this album syncs up with something. And now another poem over cosmic noises. It's ZZ Top meets Jefferson Airplane on Orgone Accumulator, cool blues riff. 10 Seconds of Forever is another stupid slam poetry moment. These guys are like the Isaac Asimov version of Led Zeppelin with Tolkien. The lyrics and vocals are terrible. There are parts of this that are good, but songs drag on forever and the space sounds and poetry readings are laughable. If Flight of The Conchords made this album as a joke, I would believe it. The talking segments are absolute nonsense. There's a hint of something cool in this and it just never gets any space to breathe with all the psychedelic jabbering and jamming and space noise. Closes with another little chat.
The Germans had Kosmische. The Brits had … this. Ok, and Amon Dul too. Not much of a competition. (Yes, this is unfair. Up to a point. In any case, i did crush hard on Silver Machine, so I probably have no standing for my sniffy-ness)
You have to be on drugs to enjoy this
Honestly this is just too long and not particularly interesting.
**An ok album. Not my cup Of tea.
I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me other this, but I just wasn't moved by this and gave in before the end, as I couldn't commit to over 2 hours of very samey music. I'll give it 2 stars as I respect the technical abilities of the band. 2/5
Haha, I mean.. at least they're honest about it being a "Sonic Attack" 😅 Although I would say not nearly as much of a grind as the live Metallica album. Relief to be past this one though. Onto the next!
I think I’d really like this if I was high, but I’m not so it’s a little bit much.
Songs are hit or miss. Some are fun jam band tunes while others are experimental sound/noise and not in a good way. Overall, I didn't hate it but I won't revisit it.
look man i do dig what you're doing here but this acid trip only lasts six hours and i got some trees i gotta look at
Decent sounding at times, but it was pretty strange and way too long.
This is the album that never ends. 2hrs 12 minutes. A very talented editor/produce might have been able slice together a brilliant 40 minute album out of it. Maybe.
This is jam band music. I think I need to be a little high to enjoy it more but it's not terrible. But it's insanely too long. I'm not listening to this for 2+ hours
Very mid
Extensive live album, feels like a long spacy trip, I guess you had to be there.
Best Song: Master of the Universe. A more standard rock track with some ripping instrumental sections. Worst Song: The Awakening. This sounds like it feels much more profound than it really is, which is just a mildly German man rambling in monotone. Overall: You have to be be inordinately into space to enjoy this album. Musically it's got some interesting prog rock sections, but lyrically it sounds like a grade school student who only remembered on the bus ride into school that morning that they had to give a presentation on "space" to the class. There's better prog albums out there.
This was so long. An extra star for being unique and weird
Ok, so this album is good in the sense that they can play their instruments well, and for a live album it sounds pretty good. However, (as many people have pointed out) IT IS WAAAAAY TO LONG. I enjoy some jam bands so I get it, but 2+ hours when every song sounds the same is just too much. Here is a list of complaints: - too long - can't sing well - individual songs are too repetitive - every song sounds the same - too many spoken word segments - spoken word segments are too long - spoken words that are spoken are cringe - the riffs they play are annoying (every song has 1 guitar riff on repeat until the required solo section. I found myself skipping to the solo everytime because the riff would get annoying) I might have enjoyed a condensed studio album, but this was just too much nothing and made me angry
This wasn't a one, but that's just because I respect the craft. Epic space rock nonsense that goes on for 2 hours isn't what I needed today or most days.
jaa ganz cooler sound aber was soll i mit einem 2h live album
Not a fan
It does go on a bit …
It’s cosmic hard rock and is fun for awhile, but then it just keeps going and going. Becomes very repetitive after awhile. I know it’s live so renditions will be more jammy but it’s just too much. I don’t think I’ll spin this one again.
I started out enjoying this but it became increasingly plodding as it went on. I didn’t mind how it all flowed together at first but when my work day ended and it wasn’t background noise, I couldn’t do it anymore. 2 only because maybe if it was just music for when I have to write I would enjoy it more
Space and psychedelic. Probably didn’t need to be over two hours but it was a nice listen
Proto-metal/punk. I believe Lemmy from Motörhead was in the band for a time.
Repetitive, hard to finish
Strange definitely not in my wheel house.
Aaaaivan liian liila-keltainen-psykekuvastokamaa.
A bit too much for me and that’s saying something. Weirdness just for the sake of being weird is not for me.
I am not listening to two discs of this. It *did* give me some contextual perspective on This Is Spinal Tap.
Áhugavert... að vissu leyti. Afskaplega frjálslegt, allt saman.
Were the drugs different in the 1970s? What the crap was this?
I just didn't really care. Are the musicians talented? Undoubtedly, just listen to a track or two and you'll understand that. But man I just did not care about this album at all. Long, overly indulgent psychedelic jam band music that is probably a boomer's wet dream. And don't get me wrong - boomer music is my wheelhouse. But this...this was just difficult to listen to with any sense of attention or intention. It just meanders on and on. The bass line is the thing that stuck out the most, and it was excellent but often felt repetitive. The entire thing is an exercise in excess and lack of formal structure. I can get down with a live album. I can get down with a live album that has extended versions of songs with solos and breakdowns and other added material. I can get down with a long live album. But I could not get down with this. Meandering, obtuse, overly indulgent, and often times just strange. It's a shame, too, because I thought I'd enjoy it more than I did. Two and a half stars, rounded down to 2 because I didn't enjoy it. Standout track: Lord of Light
Long, so long. There was a visual performance to go along with this, maybe it worked better in an actual live context. Endless guitar and effects noodling is tough to enjoy without being on drugs. 1.5*
Pretty good for a jam band, but still a jam band. Might be higher if not for the awful monologues
Well that sure was two hours of a dude grunting “SPACE… SPACE…” over some C-tier Black Sabbath instrumentals. Best song: Down Through the Night
Not sure what to think
Absolutely incredible levels of wankery on this. I like drugs too, but get real. This narrowly misses a 1 just because there are some good things under all the dumb shit.
Usually I like the spacey jam psych rock. However, this was aimless noise for 2 hours.
I think I would get into this if it was just the instrument jamming and more singing (I enjoyed the singing but there really weren’t many lyrics). I just couldn’t get into the mix of random sounds and talking along with the traditional instruments because of how it was put together. Would listen to entire Pink Floyd albums and never question those type of things so maybe it’s just that it was live? Anyway, not sure I would listen again.
I sorta understand the concept of the album, but this style and the length of the album did not lend itself to active listening, which in turn leads to more personal connection to the band and discovery within the genre - it turns into simply background ambient music, which is not something that fits the project in my opinion. This was not bad music, just middle of the road. 2.5/5
Too fucking long and like most live albums, sucks.
good gutter, ok album nothing special
Pretty such you need to be tripping on shrooms for any of this to make sense.
Some of this was pretty good. However, it’s still two hours of jamming, and some of it was ridiculous. I understand the appeal of jam bands, but there’s also a real art to editing and cutting down to the best parts of a song. This reminded me why I like editing.
What distinguishes space rock from prog rock? Boops and blips and wooshes that could be spaceship sound effects in an early sci-fi movie? Some odd sci-fi spoken-word poetry? I had never heard of Hawkwind, despite them still consistently making music 50 years later. Maybe they never made much of an impact Stateside? Maybe it was because their music droned on and on without ever getting anywhere. The long tracks keep going and going, but without any real build or destination.
Ambling, directionless nonsense.
A bit too weird even for background listening, in my opinion.
Oh dear. Hahahaha! Sometimes the 60s and 70s are embarrassing to me...
Mix is not good. Feels like you're missing something the entire time---maybe the light show and dancer(s?) were great.
Some great musicianship, but not my cup of tea.
Lost interest quickly on this one
A live double album of space rock is not something that makes me very happy. I think the legend of the album and music is a lot bigger than its actual quality and impact. Only funny and interesting fact is Lemmy playing bass guitar on it, but that's it.
It’s not a 1. I give it credit for trying but the psychedelic space jams ain’t for me.
Im imagining Deep Purple and The Doors but so high on acid that they lost the ability to play their instruments
Blind album and artist. This album is a trip.... I can't speak for everyone, but I definitely don't wanna go on it again. Don't take me to space if this is what it's like. It ain't dogshit, just spaceshit and that makes it not the worst thing I've heard.
Very long, a bit interesting but really just too much. I think it’s an interesting idea I’ve never seen beofee but I can’t say I liked it
Started ok, got repetitive
Really didn’t care for any of these songs, I wish the album was shorter
I feel like I may have liked this if I had heard it in the ‘70’s.
Couldn't make it through the whole thing
Interesting presentation. It's one of those albums where the music sounds exactly like the cover art looks. It's spacey and psychedelic. Enjoy!
This was just a little too over the top spacey for me. I understand it’s a concept album, but there was no melody or anything that drew me to it musically. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: Down Through The Night
In all seriousness, I don't know how one made it all the way through this slog. Notes early Prog/space rock. Got it, sure. Why 90 minutes, live? Why this album? So long and repetitive.
Sometimes there's a reason you've never heard of some of these acts. They aren't very good. This sounds like a cross between Black Sabbath and Spinal Tap, but not in a good way. What happens when you take a borderline genre (prog rock) too far. Cool album cover though.
There is some good material on this, but it’s just far too long and bloated for me to like it
Emmmmm.... Don't really get it.
Wow, very experimental, not very good.
This album was so long, I went through a wide range of feelings. There were times I thought maybe they'd be cool to see live, then I was annoyed by some of the talking parts, some tripped songs that lasted too long and in between some pretty good jam sessions. I did make it through twice and I'm still not sure what to think of this album. I'll go right down the middle and call it 2.5. Since it's been a week of hell, the scoreboard will read 2. I could see myself, in the right time, right frame of mind give a 3. But here we are so 2 it is..... 2.5
2 hours. rough. not exactly background noise that i enjoy either. Wasnt awful but i was not a fan.
Ugh, super repetitive and I didn't really jam with it
anstrengend. Silver Machine und gut is'
Everything about this album is exactly what you’d expect with that title and album art.
I can't get behind this, I will never listen again.... it's weird, doesn't resonate with me.
With songs that take hours to get anywhere (if they get there at all) and an awful sound, I do wonder what went on in the minds of the folks that picked this album for this list here. Probably the same drugs required to come up with a band name such as “Hawkwind”?
I would probably like this if I used or had ever used, hallucinogens. But I don't / didn't. I had some friends in college (late 70's) who had some Hawkwind, and they were into a lot of the harder "mind stimulants". That must be the key. Don't get me wrong, I like prog music: yes, ELP, Genesis... even Triumvirat, Crack The Sky and Nektar. Pink Floyd, ya know. But this compares to Yes like Yes compares to ABBA... It is pretty far out there. This is an early 70's live album, but the quality seems poor even by those standards. Space Ritual is very muddy sounding, and the vocals sound very far away. The squeaks and whistles and "space sounds" are right up front, though. On the other hand, maybe that's on purpose? Musically it's not horrible, but the jams don't really have any direction, and the weird sounds rather bug me. Looking at Wikipedia, I see that Lemmy was the bass player here, before going on to Motorhead. I'm not sure what that means, but it is an interesting factoid. I don't hate this, but a cleaner sound, and a bit more concise presentation would help a lot. And some of it is pretty decent. But a lot more isn't decent. As it is, clocking in at almost 90 minutes, this just seems like wretched excess. Sorry, this is a 2, I struggled to make it a little past 1/2 way through.
A joke: What did the Hawkwind fan say when the drugs wore off? This band are shit. Best Tracks: Space is Deep; Orgone Accumulator, Master of the Universe
Way too long winded for my tastes.
Too far out for me, man.
maybe not in the mood but just found this exhausting
Nope
They cover quite a lot of rock-genres on this album: Space rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, proto-punk, and hard rock. 2.5
Stoner space rock. Samey and looong. Points for the chutzpah i guess
Such a shame, this album would ordinarily be something I really gravitate (no pun intended) towards at a time in my life where I’m really into Hard Rock jams, but record really gets killed by dumb spoken-word interludes and aggravating synth swooshing. Some real great tracks, some real heavy hitters that I’ll have in my rotation out of context from the album, but as a whole this record is overblown and annoying. Top tracks: Born To Go, Down Through The Night, Orgone Accumulator, Brainstorm, Master Of The Universe, You Shouldn’t Do That
Cool, but there's not a lot going on. Too much jamming and I am really not a fan of the monologues
“I feel like I’m really there!” said an honest person listening to a live album never. Wayyy too jammy for my taste. The 2 hour plus listening time feels daunting and I really want to just quit after 4.5 tracks.
Man skulle nok have været på rimelig meget syre for at nyde den her koncert i 70'erne.
It was fine until it was over 2 hours long and then I knew I couldn't take it so it's only a two
This is a lot.
Space is deep, so deep it put ya butt to sleep... Okay, not entirely. I actually like this a lot in a very generalized way, but I would A) have to take a lot of drugs to be willing to sit through a concert this long and this loose, and B) have to develop an interest in taking a lot of drugs, in order to really say it moved me. That's a big ask. Lemmy from Motorhead was in Hawkwind, correct? That's all I knew about them before listening to this. At least now I know a bit more. And sure enough there's some pretty cool bass work going on here.
That was hard listening for so long. No more double prog rock albums!
There were one or two moments where things perked up, but for the most part it felt like an overlong jam session. A lot of editing would be needed to make this more palatable.
It served well as background whilst working on a train, not that excit8ling.
Wow, that felt 10 times longer than it was, which was already long enough. There were moments that I thought were good, great even, then I suddenly thought, "this sounds a bit like recent Queens of the Stoneage" and I balked that QotSA may have become Hawkwind, and I'm nice an old fucker. Oh, bugger. Giving it a 2 because I didn't hate it, but it was far far too long.
2. Not my style
Fuzzy guitars and prominent bass. Backing flutes or sax. Some good solos and weird interludes. Orgone Accumulator is a highlight. ** 1/2
tiresome, though it has some good ideas
3/10
Gear: Moondrop Variations Mische: mitreißend (für ein 50 Jahre altes Live-Album), Bass kaum anwesend, High Hats etwas zu präsent Musik: psychodelischer Spass ohne Platzanspruch in meiner Bibliothek (zumindest nüchtern), muss man wohl dabeigewesen sein ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Wertung: 2/5
Not my fave
Not my thing
Fun fact, the first song I ever played on stage was "Down Through the Night". Buddy of mine in high school was obsessed with Hawkwind, though I never listened to them. I like the groove and I imagine this is better enjoyed intoxicated, but for 90 minutes, it's basically a lot of the same. Very well recorded, though. Favorite tracks: "Down Through the Night", "Orgone Accumulator"
Changed my idea of what a live concert can sound like. Bass in your face. Cool trippy shit but gets old, fast.
This is spinal tap
Too long, just do a skimming through some of the tracks, like some of them nothing much for me. Cool sound tho
Long et nul
Maybe just the first 2 songs are decent
This isn't actually terrible, but it does have the disadvantage of being both over-long and live. Meh.
Every song is too long. The space sounds are fun. The lyrics are SO BAD. Hilariously pretentious. Would be better without the singer - but still not good.
A space ritual, indeed. Honestly I did not find this music very interesting, and then it's a double album which definitely wore on me. Lots of monologues instead of much singing, lots of rolling drums and strumming guitars without melodies that I found interesting. Basically just not to my taste.
Ok. Nada muito especial.
Space doesn’t care. Space cannot be angered Space is there.
Totally bizarre. Seems to be some kind of space opera. Psychedelic spacey Back Sabbath? I dunno. Just weird.
First time hearing this one. Never heard of the band before. Born to Go is their most well-known song. According to the Classic Rock History website, they ranked it as the #1 Hawkwind track. It definitely rocks. The rest of the album....well, I think if you are high you might get into it. I'll pass on the LSD and pass on this album. 2.5
2/5 Best: Orgone Accumulator Worst: Sonic Attack
Okay list…you and I both know a 2+ hour live prog rock album from 1973 doesn’t belong on this list. No shade at the genre, but I certainly didn’t need to hear this before I died. These albums are fine, but they’re a dime a dozen. To be honest I checked out around the hour mark. You kind of get it. Give me King Crimson or Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii.
I tried....I really did. Not for me. Sorry Lemmy!
Longo pacarai e soh piracao
It has some fun guitar moments. The space rock spoken word parts are pretty cringey though
Matinée foutue en l'air
qu est ce que ca fout la
Too much!
It's 2 hours long. I think I'd have been down with it at the hour mark, but after a full football match it's hard to work out what new noises are in their noise? I do dislike live albums - any of the three albums that make up this set would get three or four stars. As this stands, it's a long slog of a two.
Weird, futuristic, and felt like a huge influence on Spinal Tap.
Don't know if I'll make it through todays album. It's 2hrs and first track is very experimental if the rest is like that then... yeah, not gonna happen. Well it turned out to be good ol 70s rock, but a bit too busy for me. Sorry. 1.5 stars.
Music made by people called Hawkwind for people who wished they’d call themselves Hawkwind.
The only Hawkwind song I knew before listening to this album was Silver Machine. This isn't my bag, but maybe a double live album isn't the best starting point...
Lemmy does more interesting things later. I think I don’t like psychedelia? This is … meh. Self indulgent. God, bring on punk.
I am putting this in the "unusual" pile. Having at least *heard* of these guys, I flicked off the actual album, went and listened to hits Master of the Universe & Silver Machine. And then I remembered Motorhead. The band. Music doesnt need a point, or message, or form, it can just be. I seek not to understand. I bare witness. It has its moments. Guitar grind. But I do wonder though what potion you need to take it with for this music to fully 'work'. Steve Halpern is far more transporting. And pleasant I feel the need for a towel folded under my feet to reduce the disorientation and nausea. The guitars are good - but is it because of Lemme? For me, this lacks the pleasant vibe I'd like to have during space travel. This is akin to riding in the back of a Transit van with a broken muffler all the way north on the M6. I'll take an early exit.
Hippy that I was in the early 70’s, I somehow totally missed Hawkwind. This is the first album of theirs that I’ve ever listened to & I have to confess that I only skimmed quite a few tracks (so many of them are so bloody long). I find the whole cosmic space thing just a bit irksome - all that constant whirling synth & all that serious spoken-word sci-fi bullshit. Still I did find a couple of decent rock tracks here - Orgone Accumulator (whatever that is) & Time We Left This World Today. Unsurprisingly the latter is one of the songs Lemmy is the vocalist on. I own a single by Inner City Unit, who I’ve always thought were Hawkwind under another name. Having googled the name , I find that only Nik Turner & Dead Fred were members of this band - but do yourself a favour & listen to their last single, Bones Of Elvis. I find this more listensble than anything on Space Ritual. And it’s funny. In a good way.
Some of the jams are really good but this was just really long, sci-fi space psychedelic rock that sort of just noodles all over the place. All of the spoken word stuff sounded really corny to me and most of it just ended up feeling completely nonsensical. Really wasn't a fan of this much at all but I can respect the skill they had and some of the riffs and instrumental passages. Maybe baked out of my mind I'd love this, who knows?
just kind of boring all sounds the same, corny lyrics
a 2 hour live album is a rubbish way to be introduced to a band...
too jamband for me
It was either kind of good or 'turn on, tune in, drop out' new age hippie bullshit. Somewhere in between maybe... some of it was listenable.
Interesting
There's a couple of really good songs in there, but the whole thing, and even the good songs, are far, far too long. I like some long songs and albums, but they have to go somewhere... this did not.
meh, not my thing
Genres: Space rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, proto-punk, hard rock Formed: London in 1969 Run time: 21 songs, 2 hours, 12 min Two hours, now that’s an album. Does the quality a match the quantity? If you’re looking for deep meaningful lyrics, this isn’t the place to find them. The album explores space and our place in it. The lyrics are very basic, almost childish in their simplicity. The original was shorter, and this reissued/remastered version was expanded. I suppose it gives fans more of what they want, but for the rest of us it’s a bit self-indulgent. Instrumentally good, lyrically poor. If you like Prog, you will probably like this. I’m not in that camp. It drags on for me and some of the sound effects are jarring and unpleasant. I know some groups like to experiment and push boundaries, but this album is too much. Four tracks are close to or over 10 minutes. Half the tracks have less than 500k plays on Spotify and the rest are less than 100k. I like the Hawkwind track “Silver Machine” but found nothing comparable on this album. I will never listen to this album again. Two hours I’ll never get back! I may listen to a “best of”. My Rating: **
can’t get into it
I usually like Hawkwind, but this live album was a bit of a struggle to get through in one go.
psych rock style
OK baseline and some of the kisic good. Shame about the lyrics and some of it sou ding like Ross ' keyboard playing!
I can't stand this band, at all. The vocalist is whiny, the musical movement is to trippy and out there for my tastes. But, I was very impressed by the bassist powerhouse Lemmy Kilmister. I doubt I'll give this album or Hawkwind more proper listening time, I just can't gel with the genre. 3 out of 10
The only cool thing about this band is the fact that Lemmy was in it for a time and appears here. Sadly, he cannot save it. Dull, shitty sound, and too long. I really didn't like this much at all. The only thing saving it was the occasional kinda cool riff and the fact that I can't give anything Lemmy was involved with a 1. I'd rather listen to the worst Motorhead album than this any day.
God, was I relieved when this was over. It's really hard to motivate myself to listen to longer albums like this. That being said, it was okay. The music kinda felt like it was going in one ear and out the other, only grabbing my attention a few times during the duration of the album. It's an impressive album though, and good on anyone who enjoys this. I liked the interlude/introductions that some of the songs had. My favourite song was probably Down Through The Night, but barely anything stood out.
Weak, trying to do a Zed thing, I guess
Holy crap. Was the name Hawkshit already claimed?
Great, a live double album by an obscure British space rock band. Muddy production, noodling, weird noses, droning vocals. Bleh.
This was unbelievably boring
Oh no. For two hours? Hopefully it grows on me. Update: it didn't. Not actively offensive to the senses, but ponderous, overwrought, and absolutely boring.
Really this just confirms to me that I don't like Psych Rock, could be the fact that I was going through some nightmare anxiety but I think mainly the Psych Rock, I'm giving it like 1.5 stars
3/10 there were some cool sci-fi-y rock moments but Christ this was a slog to get through
Quite bad. 3/10
The mixing is kind of nice, and some of the riffs are very cool, but I simply cannot get past 2 things: the length of this album, and how terrible the lyrics are. I feel like at this point (1973), this was just kind of an unexplored space (no pun intended) and so, like, "a vaguely dystopian album about space" was a novel enough concept on its own, but man, does this feel trite now. These guys are kind of contemporaries with Rush and man, would I rather listen to a Rush album right now. Skipping standouts because none of the tracks really did anything to differentiate themselves from any of the other tracks. Rating: 2 (maybe 1?)
decent
This album is alright. I really like the guitar playing in the songs, but not enough to listen to it for 90 minutes straight. Also I didn't like the singing or the weird transitions between songs. If the album was shorter I probably would enjoy it more, but that's not the style of the genre. Favorite song: Brainstorm Worst song: Born to Go
Probably huge in the day, but seems overdone & drawn out by current standards
Now I know what happens when I remark that an album is a tad long. I apologize, oh 1001 Albums overlords! This was indeed a case of Sonic Attack. I know this because I felt dizzy, and the need to vomit, and there was bleeding from orifices, and an ache in the pelvic region. Thankfully I knew what to do! There were some fun and interesting moments on this album, so I give it credit for that. I can even imagine that watching them live with the assistance of a substance or two might have made it more compelling, but as it was I was subject to fits of hysterical shouting Or even laughter.
At first glance at what I was into with this double album, I felt dread. Then I started to listen, an although I thought the production quality was a bit lacking, I wasn't terribly opposed to what I was hearing. Hmmm...I think I kind of like this psychedelic guitar rock...Wait, what is that somewhat irritating noise...Phew, that went away, but this one is dragging out a bit...Oh god! Spoken verse...Why?!?...When will it end...Okay, back to the groove and kind of diggin...aaaand he's talking again...How much longer is this?
I find this kind of music rather silly. When I wasn't bored, I was embarrassed for all of us. My favorite parts were the spoken word bits where the guy sounds like Hans Gruber stating his demands to the miracle that is the Eff Bee Eye. "The following people are to be released from their captors: In Northern Ireland, the seven members of the New Provo Front. In Canada, the five imprisoned leaders of Liberte de Quebec. In Sri Lanka, the nine members of the Asian Dawn Movement. Small babies should be placed inside the special cocoons and should be left, if possible, in shelters."
There's too much, too many ethereal moon sounds, too much indulgence. Whittle it down to a strong 6-song album.
a little too out there for me
Ooof! This album was entirely too long. It was just noise after awhile and the lyrics were very interesting at times.
Echte ouwe rock inclusief schreeuwlelijk :-). Niet mijn ding. **
Hawkwind reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd, Rush, and The Doors. They are definately in the psychedelic rock genre. I've never listened to any of their stuff before this exercise, but heard about them, and how "out there" their music was. You can definately tell that the "space race" of the 60s-70s had a major influence on their song style. The use of synthesizers, theramins, trumpets, heavy bass grooves, lasers... (basically whatever they could get their hands on) gave the music a very futuristic feel, and was very exploratory in nature. Something I noted, given this is a live album, you barely hear the crowd at all throughout the duration of the album. The end of "Welcome to the Future" is the only time they are heard to any degree. I think the music and copious amounts of hallucinogens lulled them into a trance for the duration of the concert, lol. I didn't hate this album, like I thought I would. There was definately some experimentation going on, and the long drawn out solos sometimes are hard to keep focus on, but there were a few songs that weren't bad on the album. Favourite songs: Time We Left This World Today, Upside Down, Orgone Accumulator Least favourite songs: The Awakening, The Black Corridor, 10 Seconds of Forever, Sonic Attack, Welcome to the Future (these songs are just noises and talking), Electronic No. 1 (just God awful theramin noises), You Shouldn't Do That (almost 11 minute drawn out, acid induced solo) 2/5
This was briefly engaging in spurts but overall, not my thing. Literally needed to take ibuprofen towards the end.
Definitely not high enough for this one.
Not that bad, but 2h12m is too long... and a live album should NOT be in this list, period.
Am I in an arcade? They have more than one album? Someone remastered them? It's not my cup of team, but there are some moments of rhythmic music.
Not really my cup of tea.
I need more drugs for this one.
Just to much
similar to the grateful dead in that its a really long album that is meant to be listened to high and in person 2.5
just sounded the same throughout the album. May have needed to take or smoke some things beforehand to appreciate.
Self-indulgent prog rock jam with a bit harder edge. I didn't notice when the album started repeating again from the beginning.
This didn’t do much for me too weird but can see why it’s on the list.
listened to about 10 minutes then decided a couldn’t be bothered. silly space noises for 2.5 hours is not my cup of tea 2/5
Thanks to this album leart about Space rock https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_rock good sounds but a little boring.
Nope. Too long and meandering, lyrics are goofy, and the chord progressions are by-the-book. Nothing special here.
2 stars. The tracks that were actual songs were like 3-4 stars, but so much nonsense in between. Why?
Oh no. I’m not that kind of girl.
"The Space Ritual Alive in Liverpool and London" is a mix of two live performances by Hawkind, recorded eight days apart in England. It's an somewhat interesting record of space rock in his development, but not a particular good one. For a band focused in adding psychedelic and progressive references to their music, they're too focused on Dave Brock's guitar riffs (and maybe that's the reason why he is the sole continous member of the band after all those decades).
Thank goodness for punk.
One of the most boring psychedelic rock I've ever heard
the first few songs were like okay yas! but then i was like uhhh… 13 minute songs that sound exactly the same… for two hours…? not okay yas! it got very boring very fast. the space talking and stuff was cool at first but then i was like omg just stop. if it was shortened by 70 percent it’d be a lot better.
Zzzz. I'm a fan of some of the early-70s Gong material and there's definitely a parallel here at least in terms of the long-form space rock...hanging on to one chord seemingly forever through an extended trippy section...sax solos...heavy heavy reverb... A big difference to me is complexity and interest... both of which are considerably lower here (again comparing to Gong). I'm not sure the musicians ...vocals...guitar...bass (sorry Lemmy)...drums... are any good at all, nor am I sold on any of the songwriting - "Time We Left This World Today" is akin to a slightly sped-up terrible Black Sabbath jam. I do respect that this is supposed to be more of a "feel" or a jam and given that this is a live recording I would accept that maybe [under the influence of something] this would have been super-trippy to experience in person. There's just nothing worth mentioning that's anywhere near adventurous or dammit just *interesting* on the instrumental side. Take "Orgone Accumulator" for a 10-minute example. It goes nowhere. Which...ok. But how is it any different than any other "song" on this album. Positives? I enjoy the effects; i.e. the synths are quite good and might be the only thing in this band/performance outside the occasional flight on the sax that elevates what would otherwise be completely base 2-3 chord songs into something slightly edgier or different. It's tough - I really wanted to like this; I like the idea of it - this weird fake mysticism, spacey/trippy rock that's not adhering to standard 4-5 minute songs but .... not even halfway through I wanted to hear just one standard 4-5 minute song. "10 Seconds of Forever" - I couldn't come up with a more appropriate song describing the album. It's disappointingly bad. 3/10 2 stars.
Me parece que more jam band than psychedelic or prof. An impressive feat of recording technique and player’s endurance but everything goes on way too long.
Listened before? N Meh. It was okay. I’m sure it’s considered a prog rock classic but it’s a very tough intro to a band. Very long and difficult to understand lyrics. Maybe younger stoner me would have loved it? Added to library? N
maluco
Very psychedelic.. some I enjoyed but most were confusing? Also a bit spooky.
First of all, the typeface (or font, which is a subset of typeface) they used for the album cover teleported me right back to childhood when most space-related stuff used it. Love it. Musically, this is certainly some interesting stuff to my ears. It quickly gets spacey and trippy at most points, and I do understand that's what they are going for. They can play and orchestrate superbly; mostly, however, the songs are not all that enjoyable for me. It can get really jarring to my ear.
I didn’t finish this album not because it was bad but because I just got tired of it. Each song sounded like the same type of space rock with ambient noises and some good guitars/drums
Wow this is a loooong album. I didn't hate it, but it's not really ticking my boxes. I like my prog a bit more melodic and less droney.
Long, sprawling psychedelic rock with some Joy Division vocals. Dated and uncreative overall
Not my cup of tea. These albums, while more psychedelic, simply give prog rock a bad name. Way too long, far too little interesting.
Didn't really like this. Pretty boring and it just sounds very similar. Also very long.
Progressive nope
Hawkwind's fourth album is a live recorded double album of psychedelic/space rock and/or hard/progressive rock, released in 1973. The album comprised most of the set list played during their tour of 1972 and was intended to be one continuous, intertwining melody. I loved how every song faded into the next and I can just imagine myself spending an afternoon, getting lost in their music as the record played. There are a few spoken word songs which took away from the musical immersion and was probably better received when watching the performance live. Overall, this album was a serious trip and I'm glad it found its way to my ears!
Men rätt gött sound.
Not my thing
Not for me. I don’t care for psychedelic rock.
Not my thing i'm afraid
Just couldn't get into it. Too dense by half
This is my first dalliance in space rock. I didn't expect it to be quite so literal. Their interpretation of space is quite sci-fi, robotic, and distopian except for on "Electronic No 1" where they even seem to have gone to the moon and recorded Clangers. I guess a lot of the tracks get into nice chugging grooves, but there is little to distinguish them from one-another. Overall it's all just a bit weird and impenetrable.
I couldn't even make it through this today. Monotonous. I don't hate it, it just wasn't interesting enough.
I mean...it's a long-winded prog-rock album. I don't really understand it, because for "space sounding" it just sounds...like a LOT of progressive rock. and it's wayyyy too long.
This is another one I couldn’t get into when I first gave it a spin. I decided to give it 24 hrs and try again. It was a little better but still not really rocking my boat. Is Dino Rock a genre? They sound like a dinosaurs band before being old enough to be called such. Some was OK but it lacked consistency.
Good music that is sorely held back by artists that are too full of themselves to realize that maybe they should cap it out at one hour so that it's a more concise and focused album. I understand this is peak space rock but man is it a slog to get through. Going to use this opportunity to say now that a long album does not make it a bad one. There are great double albums and longer albums! The issue I tend to have is that if you are going to structure a record to be longer that 40-50 minutes, you need to have a good reason. Do all the songs make it so that the album is greater than the sum of it's parts? Does it lend itself to an overall experience rather than just a collection of songs? How does that experience fare in the end? These are the questions that put longer albums like Space Ritual on trial, because the artists behind the album are ultimately asking me to invest more time and attention than I would a regular album, so they need to make it worth my while. Ultimately they nail certain thematic ideas (the length of the album could be equated to the vastness of space), but when I'm in the thick of it I find I'm not so impressed. The smaller moments that I enjoy don't make up for the fact that the whole piece, front to back, is not as incredible as it would lead me to believe. And no, I'm not going to listen to it while high.
Pretentious and kind of boring. I'm sure it was much better seeing it live.
Sure if I had listened to this before Spinal Tap I wouldn’t have found it as hilarious.
Joo-o…
Sounded like Spinal Tap. One extra star for some good hooks.
Toooo long, baby
Not really my thing now,but I remember seeing them in 1973 at Dunstable Civic.Far out man!!!
i actually liked some of the music i just couldn’t listen to it for that long, was like my brain was under attack
Muchas partes habladas.
Marijuana helped greatly with the enjoyment of this album, probably helped with the recording of it as well. If you like this, I recommend giving King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard a listen.
This would have been a stoner concert
meh
Definitely some interesting rock sounds, but nothing groundbreaking or particularly creative.
Interesting but a bit weird
This should be my thing but none of these songs really excited me much.
1973: Born To Go, Down Through the Night
Couldn't finish it
God this is terrible. Too long and just a barrage of noise.
The best thing I can say about this album is, for one brief moment, side 2 was better than side one. Otherwise, I felt on the verge of a panic attack throughout, particularly during “Sonic Attack”. That was… something.
Live double album of 70's psychedelic rock? For fucks sake! 1/5
Repetitive, indistinguishable, pretentious hippie crap. Getting fired was the best thing that ever happened to Lemmy.
No, this isn’t what I have in my record collection. One star...
Guessing this album was a trailblazer for the form or something, I’m just not on enough drugs to appreciate it
long af
This album is just not good. The vocals and sounds are poor. Also it is way too long of an album.
This…was not for me. Did not make me a believer in space rock, had to admit defeat after like 5 songs (normally I always finish the album).
Weird, trippy, esoteric - readings over seagull sounds and electronic sounds - did not enjoy. It's also SO LONG for being so annoying.
I didn't vibe with this album at all. I know its a live album but the sound quality is bad. The synth sounds don't fit and the singing and instruments aren't catchy. Total miss for me unfortunately.
Muy lsrgo
I did not expect to encounter Hawkwind on this list, although given the general quality, I probably should have. If you liked the songs in Spinal Tap, this could be for you.
szczoch imo
491/1089 - This album could've been half the length. The songs are so jammy and vamp-y which is complete bullshit to listen to. Where is the variation? Where is anything of interest? It sounds like bad EDM before EDM even existed!
DNF - really not for me and way too long thus creating for a grueling experience that i don't ever want to repeat. First 30 seconds of a song would be great and then it would just keep going? Like just don't do that? Please?
Gosh this was hardwork, felt endless. Not for me.
Just wasn’t for me at all. Far too long, repetitive and full of drawn out spacey jams that never really seemed to go anywhere. This felt more focused on atmosphere and weird noises than actual memorable music. Ended up being a complete slog to get through. 1/5 starts for me
Yikes guys this album is nothing to me I do not want to hear this I am bored move on ya know I DNF this tired of random nonsense in this list
Every second I hate it more. Like being abducted by aliens and the sound itself is also shit
Wtf is this? 2 HOURS. I’d never heard of space rock and hope never to again
I guess this is my punishment for a few good albums in a row. This was an awful waffle.
Too electronic
Not my cup of tea
demasiado raro
Album 84 and the second one I couldn’t listen to all of. Have always thought silver machine was terrible. This is like a double album of poorer versions of that
One single drum beat over and over across an entire album full of 7+ minute songs, with uninteresting vocals, and a few solid guitar riffs. I definitely did not need to listen to this album before I died.
não funcionou pra mim. 0/5.
don’t think I got more than four songs in before giving up. There are few albums on earth that need to be 2 hours and this is not one of them
Nope. Not for me AT ALL. I feel like you have to be on some sort of hallucinogenic drugs to enjoy this (unfortunately (or fortunately, depends on how you look at it), I do not use such substances). Because without it, you are just listening to almost one and a half hours of synth and guitar noise with some annoying spoken word moments on top. These jams go on way to long to the point that they either become annoying or boring.
I feel like this is best enjoyed while under the spell of something medicinal.
Too long
I Couldn't listen to the whole thing. I stopped doing weed a while ago but I don't even think I would've enjoyed it high.
Drivel
Toss Not very rememberable
No more psychedelic rock
Best Track - "Orgone Accumulator"
It’s pretty bold to assume that everyone’s on drugs and can put up with that for two hours, let alone actually enjoy it. 1.5/5
I got so tired of listening to this so quickly, which is a very bad problem to have for an hour and a half long double album. Just a pain to hear it all the way through.
Halfway through and I can’t imagine listening to this in any situation. Alt rock y with some alien y sounds thrown in. Tracks blend together like Melanie album.
Too much of a good thing
Ehhh
I've already made my feelings on live albums pretty clear (that with very few exceptions (see Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison) they don't belong on this list), as well as my feelings on when albums are too long. This is a double LP too, which again detracts in some small way from the idea that this qualifies as "an album". I feel like the people who compiled this list have a much looser definition of "album" than I would. Live albums, compilation albums, greatest hits albums... and in some cases double albums. Get rid of them all. And you know I mean this because one of my favourite "albums" is actually technically a collection of 9 EPs, and so I'd never consider it for something like this on principle. (but do go check out "The Colour Spectrum" by The Dear Hunter, it's fantastic) Thankfully, I checked this one on Wikipedia before listening, and found that the last four tracks on Spotify aren't on the original album release, which saved me 40 minutes of listening. That's right, four songs totalling 40 minutes. Averaging 10 minutes per song. What. Here's the thing, some of this music was not bad... but just about every song got tiresome for being too long, or too much of the same, which I think is almost the antithesis of prog, right? Prog aspires to be weird and different and inventive and keep the listener guessing, and this was bland and one-note. The exception to this is when they took a break to do dramatic spoken word stuff, and even THAT got boring because it went on for too long and they did it over and over again. I'm sure people enjoyed watching this concert live in the 70's when there was a naked dancer on stage to keep them entertained... But just the audio? Almost unlistenable. Heck, even WITH a naked lady dancing around I think I'd be hard pressed to sit through this again. Too long, too repetitive, too far up its own butt trying to be artsy and clever and doesn't really count as an album.
I really hate to say it but I didn't finish this one; got like 80% of the way through but then gave up. If you're gonna make an album that's 90ish mins long it better have variance, or at least be good

This was not for me
It's okay. Sounds a little mix of Deep Purple, Rush, Yes and Pink Floyd.
I really don't like jam bands. I couldn't finish this.
Just awful
