The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
David Bowie
Reviews (page 6 of 14)
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Another easy 5. I don’t listen as much as I should, it’s so good. Aside from the songs I love the atmosphere of the whole thing, it’s so immersive. No need to go track by track but I fucking love 5 years. One of my all time favourite Bowie songs, pulsing and spiralling upwards, fantastic drum pattern and sound, swirling strings, brilliant vocal, just an amazing song. What an opener, matched by closing with the similarly dramatic and superb Rock ’n’Roll Suicide. Everything inbetween I love too, not only are there no weak tracks, there is not one weak moment or second. Everything is just right for each song. Ronson’s guitar is incredible, as Paul mentioned, the tone is soo good, I particularly love it on Moonage Daydream. The whole sound of the records is great as well, especially the drum sound. I meant to only listen through twice, but I’ve just let it go on repeat all day. Probably on listen 7 now. 5 forever ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I thought this album was cool, creative and fun to listen to. Bowie’s style and voice are so offbeat and his lyrics are downright weird sometimes, but it keeps things interesting. Besides the notables…Starman (one of my favorite Bowie songs), Ziggy Stardust, and Suffragette City, there were some other songs that stood out, like Five Years, Moonage Daydream, and Lady Stardust. Rock n Roll Suicide was just a perfect ending. David Bowie is his own genre.
If "Hunky Dory" put David Bowie on the map of stardom, "Ziggy Stardust" is what cemented things for decades to come. This album is an exciting exploration of glam rock, hard rock, proto-punk, and more. In the best way possible, a first time listener wouldn't be sure what to expect from song to song. Like David Bowie himself, "Ziggy Stardust" kind of exists in between the lines of definition; it is loosely a concept album and loosely a rock opera, but it's not firmly in either of those camps. The album also works perfectly outside of the concept that it plays around with. David Bowie was known for his many stage personas, but Ziggy Stardust may be his most famous persona. David Bowie wasn't the first to adopt a persona on stage, but he's among the most influential to do so, without a doubt. He would go on to do it many times throughout his career, continually inspiring artists through the decades who wanted to incorporate personas, alter-egos and loose concepts in their work. Again, Ziggy wasn't the first, but Ziggy was among the most influential here. There really just isn't a level where this album doesn't succeed; it succeeds on defying and pushing genres; it succeeds as a concept album; it succeeds as a musical album in general; it succeeds in having outstanding individual songs that all stand on their own, from vocals to production to lyrics; it succeeds at being an early example of a singer being thrust into pop/rock stardom. Bowie would be an absolute force for his entire life, constantly pushing creative boundaries, but this album may be him at his finest.
This is this listener's fourth album by superstar David Bowie. "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" is a fantastic rock opera concept album featuring Bowie's titular alter ego. Beautiful and moving, this is undeniably one of the best albums.
Großartiger Rock aus den 70ern 5/5
This isn't the first time I've heard this. Brilliant album, great vocalist, excellent musically. Love it.
Sensational album. The sound is a bit tinny and under-produced, but it still has it's own charm. Top tracks include Starman and Suffragette City.
There isn't much to say about Ziggy, it's just that good. It reaches this level off of a lack of faults.
So where were the spidersss🗣🗣🔥🔥 favourites: moonage daydream, soul love, ziggy stardust, starman least: they're all good but I'm not a big fan of suffragette city ziggy played his guitarrrrr...
Best album by Bowie. Best concept album. Everything is tight musically and lyrically.
Up there with Bowie's best work, virtually every song is a winner and I don't think Bowie every sang better than he did on Ziggy. Highly recommended!
Would I listen to it again: yes Is it a no-skip album: yes Favorite song: Moonage Daydream Least favorite song: It Ain't Easy Do I like it: yes
A personal top 10. Love this album so much.
I love David Bowie and I adore this album.
Fourth Bowie album in two weeks. But this one truly is perfect. I don't hold him on the pedestal that many others do - he's probably a top 100 artist for me, but not top 20 - but even despite that, and despite wishing I liked glam-rock more than I do, there's just no way I can deny the incredible songwriting and performances on this record. As cliche as it may be, it's my favorite of his. 5/5
Most of the alleged “perfect” albums are overrated…. This one ain’t.
Bowie is like no other. This is an amazing album with some all time songs. The last being my most treasured Bowie classic.
Woah, two crackers in as many days. This is a masterclass in producing a kooky Bowie album, by none other than...Bowie. Amazing stuff.
wham bam thank you mam
This is the album that began my obsession with David Bowie's music. I bought it at a book store because I recognized the song "Starman" and figured if that was on there the rest ofnthe tracks had to be pretty good too. Ironically, it wasn't love at first listen. I played it once or twice right after getting it, but didn't immediately feel the magic. Cue a couple months later when something clicked in my brain and all of a sudden I had it playing daily. Then I began a deep dive of Bowie's discography that lasted the rest of that year and catapulted him to a firm spot in my top five artists. Needless to say after all that, I dig it.
a rock hard, solid gold, stunner of an album.
It's hard to top Hunky Dory, but following it up with Ziggy Stardust is a good shout.
Magicician...
Really really good! I quite loved it and it's definitely a remarkable album.
I got it on vinyl!
timeless, know every note
Awesome Bowie goodness. So good I listened to it twice. Five stars.
Perfect from start to finish. Some of Bowie’s best work. I never tire listening to this. 5/5
Bowieeeeee! My favorite Bowie? Not quite. I'm not super into concept albums. But it's a very good one. And the title track is hard to beat.
Genuinely really beautiful
All killer no filler 👌
Still ahead of the times
Bowie doesn’t get much better than this. Best era of Bowie and an album full of bangers.
BANGER.
Hard to know what to say. Probably one of my ten or so favorite albums ever made. Every last song is a classic. If Bowie never made anything but this he'd still be a legend. Best song: Moonage Daydream
amazing album, basically perfect, timeless tracks
Любовь. Один из лучших альбомов Давида Иванова
It’s perfect. What else can I say?
I've always liked the Bowie radio hits but I'd never listened to a full album except before starting this 1001 generator journey. I didn't really like Young Americans as much as I'd hoped nor his final album Blackstar (rated both a 3). But this album is the absolute tits. Every song hits for me. I can't put in words why, but every song makes me happy I'm listening to it.
Great Album.
SPIDERS?! FROM MARS?!?
Albums by Bowie that would need a comment because they are less than five stars and there are things to say about them: Space Odyssey, Man Who Sold The World, Pinups, Young Americans, everything from Lodger onwards. This is not one of those albums.
no notes.
This is a wonderful concept album that also serves songs with catchy hooks and chart toppers. A classic for a reason.
Starman is an amazing song, whole album was gr8, fun listen
An essential for anyone who loves true art
What a cool and bizarre album. Backgrounds are a lot of spacey synth type of sounds which go well with Bowie’s lyrics. I did enjoy it more than Low, which I also really liked. Only two songs I didn’t really care for, but an amazing package overall. So great that it pains me to dislike anything here because the standouts really are great. Standouts: Five Years, Soul Love, Moonage Daydream, Starman, It Ain’t Easy, Ziggy Stardust, Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide.
Iconic
Obra maestra
Heard this one a couple times before - starry classic rock that sounds like it was really recorded in space. I'll need to revisit this to fully understand the story, but I throughly enjoyed this album! Favorite song: Five Years / Lady Stardust Least favorite song: It Ain't Easy
It’s obviously great. Hot take - one of the best albums by one of the best artists is an album you should hear before you die.
Would give it a 6 if I could.
Amazing. Never ever once have I tired of this music.
Been a while since I listened to it all the way through. Still like every song.
Bowie's music at its best! I love a concept album with a strong unifying theme, and in this case it's (of course) a space opera. Ziggy Stardust is a reflection of Bowie himself, so it's easy to see a personal element to his creativity.
Bowie is an absolute Genius. Best album of all time.
.
Both Ziggy Stardust and Suffragette City? Best Bowie album.
Ziggy played guitarrrrr....
Fucking incredible. Classics like starman, moonage daydream, suffragette city and Ziggy stardust obviously all make this incredible but for me the cherry on the top is how its book ended. The opening of five years perfectly sets up the concept of the album with the impending doom of the end of the world, which is awesomely contrasted with the rock and roll of Ziggy and the themes of fame and ego. The closing of rock and roll suicide then ends the album perfectly with ziggy’s fall from grace. The track starts with just the guitar strumming and ends with the repeating “you’re wonderful” and the way it builds is just incredible and gives the album a lasting impression.
Very good a classic album
This cd has been in my car for the past 15 years, at minimum.
A testament to simple, short, effective rock tracks. They can be pretty darn effective. Each song in this collection is pretty distinctive from the others, and has a fun Bowie-space-alien spin while still remaining very loyal to standard rock roots. I also admire the concept behind the songs, even if it's a little haphazard in places. Five Years is an excellent album opener, setting the stage of an Earth that's five years away from utter destruction, and the emotional and psychological turmoil being spread as a result. Soul Love begins to introduce Ziggy Stardust as a character, focusing on his (surprisingly poetic) foreign understanding of love. Moonage Daydream takes Ziggy's alien nature up a notch, and (in combination with the next two tracks, Starman and It Ain't Easy) emphasises Ziggy's desire to understand/save the human race which is both innocent and difficult to fulfil. Lady Stardust and Star seem to be discussing Ziggy's unexpected success in the world of rock'n'roll, whereas the next three tracks – Hang on to Yourself, Ziggy Stardust, and Suffragette City – present varying outsider perspectives on his overbearingness and overconfidence. At this point, Ziggy's probably forgotten his original goal of saving the planet, and the story culminates in an epic climax with the finale, Rock 'n' Roll Suicide. And yet, the concept isn't obvious upon a first listen unless you're really paying close attention. Because of this, whether you're a fan of concept albums or non-concept albums, this album is able to impress, since it can be considered either one. (Does that make sense?) The key to a really great album is a plethora of iconic, memorable moments – and Ziggy Stardust definitely has plenty of those to go around. The brilliant use of climaxes and textural changes in the opening and closing tracks. The beautiful pop genius that is Starman. Mick Ronson's finesse on the guitar, especially in the outro of Moonage Daydream. The ballsiness of essentially making the main character a drag queen, as an artistic statement in the early 70s. (wham bam thank you ma'am) Key tracks: Five Years, Soul Love, Moonage Daydream, Starman, Ziggy Stardust, Suffragette City, Rock 'n' Roll Suicide (though honestly, a solid case could be made for any/all of the tracks) 5/5
Classic Bowie. 5/5.
So damned brilliant from cover to cover. Bowie at his absolute peak. No skips, just apocalyptic joy and reality. Unexpected bangers: none, but if you can't get into the Lady Stardust groove, you can't be my friend.
oh my god amazing bowieeeee love love love its too good cant even describe it he's an icon in every meaning of the word
i was waiting for this album
Absolute solid gold.
When I reviewed Aladdin Sane, I took away enough to really strengthen my perspective on Bowie. A one of a kind artist is simply the only title I believe he is deserving of. His catalog, even if shaky and inconsistent in some places, contains some of the most solid pieces of true art created by a musician. And art is really the key word there. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars is the ultimate David Bowie album. The Bowie album to end all Bowie albums, and the one that is easily pointed to the most as proof of why he was so good. Compare this to any other artist making glam rock at the same time, even artists that David worked with himself, like Iggy Pop, and you will see why he was leagues above the competition. This album is the sum of the best parts of the overly indulgent, bombastic, and explosive approach artists often take to this genre. And it maintains itself as one of the most interesting and iconic concept albums on top of all of that. This is most obviously helped by Bowie’s character, that he brought to life with glorious passion. Starman alone should convince most of the intrigue of this record. It has possibly one of the catchiest choruses of any song released in the 70’s. It’s the definition of an earworm. Clearly Bowie is the creative star on this album. But his band is also excellent. Mick Ronson really gets to show off his abilities here. When speaking about Bowie, Ziggy Stardust is like a bigger diamond in a bin full of beautiful tinier diamonds. Even if you don’t fully love David Bowie, listen to this album. It is truly essential to rock history, and is a shining work from one of music’s most genuine creatives. Rating: 9/10
One of the best albums of all time. 5 years is one of the most underrated Bowie songs in my opinion.
he was the nazz
Ah yes. Chefs kiss.
Wow! What a great album. The story, songs, music, loved all of it. No wonder kids and artists loved Bowie in the 70s!
Classic album, with a lot of great songs
1st time hearing this classic all the way through. It’s great
One of the easiest 5* on the list. Just brilliant
Great album, great musicians, great riffs, stills holds true today. Rock and Roll Suicide is one of my favorite tracks.
a wonderfully animated song set that serves as a little memoir of bowie's alter ego. with spacey psychedelic runs and lyrics that literally make you zone out, it's a nice musical journey. this is the bowie i know, unique and sometimes surreal but no pure noise.
There were some bangers in this one!
On my all time list. A classic
lives up to its hype (rare). want on vinyl.
Awesome!
Just like how there are some albums that shouldn't be on anyone's list, Ziggy should be on everyone's list. I knew I married the right person when once we got into a huge fight over who was the bigger Bowie fan (to be precise, this was only one of the times we've had this argument - even just telling her I was telling you this story prompted another debate) and she made her case with a perfect off the cuff acapella rendition of Moonage Daydream.
probably one of my most-listened to albums of all time.
David Bowie is another one where I had always intended to explore but never got around to it. I am so glad that I did. The guitar solo in Moonage Dream rocks. Starman is fantastic but Lady Stardust may be my favourite off the album. I'll be coming back to this one requently!
my favourite Bowie album, an absolutely legendary masterpiece. both the opening and closing songs are so perfectly fitting and powerful, five years is also topically so relevant today. what an album.
...incredible
Great album, the whole album just gels and yet individual songs can stand alone. Best track Moonage Daydream with the otherworldly guitar solo, absolute bliss!
Great
Absolute banger
My favourite album of Bowie. Still unbeatable from start to end. Sounds modern, catchy and fascinating still today, since 1972. If you can only listen to 1 Bowie Album then pick this one.
I cannot add anything interesting to the "how-wonderful-and-influential-The-Rise-and-Fall-of-Ziggy-Stardust-and-the-spiders-from-Mars-is-for-the-glam-and-alternative-music" so, basically, I will limit my comment to "I LOVE IT"
All songs saved
I know from this 1001 project that a lot of Bowie albums can be strange beasts, and be wildly inconsistent. It's great to see an album like this where he's just laying down perfectly crafted rock n roll / pop songs and nothing but. I'd never heard this album before outside of 3-4 songs, but it's great. Obviously there's some massive hits, that are still as good as ever. Listening properly now I've come to appreciate new little details like all the layered vocals, and the really great guitar on Moonage Daydream for instance. I've also been introduced to other great tunes like Five Years, It Ain't Easy and Rock 'N' Roll Suicide. It's a great overall package. Brilliant songs. Great production. This one is a HIT.
The most perfect album ever
Bloody hell. Absolutely spine-tingling from start to finish.
Literally no other album sounds like this. You have to listen to the whole thing as one piece
David Bowie is such a versatile musician, his albums are always so different, yet so Bowie at the same time
Great album, I grew up with this album, My friends and I would have David Bowie party's! 5 stars
One of my all time favorite Bowie tracks is on this album which is Moonage Daydream! Back when I was first getting into David Bowie a little over 20 years ago, this was the first album I listened to, and I was hooked. Thanks to this album, I’ve dug deeper and deeper into his discography and have been a fan ever since.
Love
Discazo. Entre los diez discos a escuchar.
Love! Great music and great vibes all around. Very nice very classic, this was super pleasant to listen to, and doesn't require much brainpower to enjoy. Also appreciate that this reminded me of the existence of Starman, whose chorus evokes such a pleasantly nostalgic/happy feeling that I can't help but smile while hearing it. A good melody will always make me like a piece of music, and I think that most of the tracks on this album deliver on that end in a very convincing way. Honestly I probably need to listen to the rest of David Bowie's discography because I seem to be liking almost every new song of his that I listen to. Favourites from this album were Five Years, Moonage Daydream, Starman, Lady Stardust, Star, and Rock 'N' Roll Suicide. I'm floating between a 4 and a 5, but after re-listening to some of the tracks, I'll round up this time. Fantastic stuff
iconic
My favorite album ever
Perfect from start to finish!
Great vocals, interesting instrumentals. Love the range and changeup of the instrumentals and vocals.
i don't think that my words towards this album will ever be enough.
One of the first albums I ever bought with my pocket money and still sounds great today
Wow, well earned legendary status album and Star. What review could do it justice.
Legendary and incredible work. So many different elements and intricacies. Visionary and transformational. Nuff said. 5/5
Wow. By some fluke I got David Bowie albums two days in a row. The first one was a disappointment. But this one is a MASTERPIECE. My first 5 star review! (I've only been participating for 6 days). The music and the lyrics both reach out and grab the listener and take them on an incredible ride.
A bona fide classic. Ziggy Stardust might be partly considered a classic because it epitomised Bowie's ability to reinvent himself and inject creativity throughout his career, but the music alone speaks for itself more than sufficiently. Five Years, Moonage Daydream, Starman, Lady Stardust, Ziggy Stardust, Suffragette City.. all amazing songs, and there isn't a bad track on here at all. Easy 5*
beautiful album
Perfect
This was an awesome album that I need to listen to a few more times from beginning to end. I knew some of the songs, but this is exceptionally consistent and great.
Didn’t finish unfortunately however it’s great. It’s what you think David Bowie is but not as out there and exaggerated as you may think. 5/5
So good. I need to listen through full Bowie discography, it is usually ziggy stardust or hunky dory but I need to hear the rest of ‘em too.
An album of my youth. Almost perfect.
We are in the middle of a heatwave here atm, and I've been working in the sun all day after getting just 2 hours sleep. Despite my sleep deprived sun fried brain (or possibly because of it), it's easy to hear that this album is a masterpiece.
Just top notch. No notes. Simpsons reference: Yes
Love this album. Not a bad track and a lovely journey to go on! Rock N Roll Suicide is such a strong ending. One of those albums I never get tired of.
A super sex laden space journey of rock n roll genius. This is just any amazing album from front to back and its relevance remains over 50 years later.
This album is phenomenal, track after track sets the bar for creativity that other works should be measured against. I sort of forgot how stacked this album is, but jeez. Just a joy and a lot of fun to listen to, will have to revisit much more often.
Inject this goodness directly into my veins. Got me talking like Stefon… this album has everything: glamour, camp, licks, Bowie in space, production, weirdness… a very easy 5/5 for me. Checked Rolling Stone’s updated best album of all time list expecting this to be in the top 10. But no, #40, which is an abomination. It’s so good. 5/5
One of my all time favourites.
Marvelous
Oh no, love, you're not alone No matter what or who you've been No matter when or where you've seen All the knives seem to lacerate your brain I've had my share, now I'll help you with the pain You're not alone And this is where Bowies voice breaks and you KNOW he’s singing the truth just as you KNOW this is the greatest album ever made.
Best Bowie album. All classic songs.
Iconic cover and fantastic album
Il mio terzo genitore
So many great songs that stand up even now. Should be in everyone's library
Yesssss
A real masterpiece.
Definitely one of David Bowie’s best albums, exploring the psyche of his alter ego Ziggy Stardust. Full of absolute classics from start to finish and sounding timeless. Five Years could have been written now (and why didn’t we listen at the time?)
Hell of an album. Absolute classic.
I’ve listened to this album literally 100s of times, including a couple weeks ago for Bowiemas/Bowienalia, and yet I was happy to see it pop up here - and I gladly listened to it yet again - because it’s perfect.
Amazing album, one of my favorites. Not a bad song on it
The best. Foundational.
One of my favorite Bowie albums
Perfection. No skips. Beautiful. Simply divine.
Absolutely genius. Bowie forever and ever!
Superb vintage Bowie
nanana de lokosh, tremendo spacial opera noseque un craken el bowie
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (alias. Ziggy Stardust) is the fifth studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 16 June 1972 by RCA Records. A ‘rock classic,’ Ziggy Stardust tells the romantic musical story about Bowie’s alter–ego, an androgynous alien rock ‘n’ roll superhero sent to Earth to unite Earth’s youth before a forthcoming apocalyptic disaster, though it takes a dire, tragic shift as Ziggy succumbs to his own ego. It’s really quite magnificent, and I am amazed at how emotionally–moving it is. The album starts off with Five Years, a tragic–romantic track in the lens of a child, who is informed that there are five years left on Earth. There are no particular song structure here, just a relentless stream of verses, before Bowie explodes into an indulgent frenzy; “Five years, my head hurts a lot, Five years, that’s all we got!” The next track, Soul Love, follows an identical formula as Five Years, with a slow start rapidly ascending into a powerful and indulging chorus. This time, Bowie whines about his nihilistic view towards love, calling it out for ‘wounding us’ for more than it’s worth. I do have to recognize that Soul Love is more enjoyable than its predecessor; many people can associate with this story of young love and know equally that it’s doomed for loss and heartbreak (“All I have is my love of love, and love is not loving”). With flashy, distinctive chords and cocky vocals, Moonage Daydream is arguably the pinnacle of Ziggy Stardust. While its predecessors act as preludes for the story, Ziggy arrives with a BANG to Earth with Moonage Daydream. The song is arrogant and glamorous (“I’ll be a rock ‘n’ roll bitch for you”), but yet, carries a more poignant, desperate undertone, and Bowie almost pleads the audience to go down with him. And may we acknowledge Mick Ronson’s guitar work on Moonage Daydream? Bowie summed up Ronson’s solo in the booklet accompanying the CD reissue, “A perfect foil and collaborator, Mick's raw, passionate Jeff Beck-style guitar was perfect for Ziggy and the Spiders. It had such integrity. You believed every note had been wrenched from his soul." This is subjectively one of the most powerful solos in glam rock history. And who can forget Starman, arguably David Bowie’s catchiest song. Hell, the octave leap chorus (“there’s a starmannn, waiting in the sky”) is probably the most beautiful melody I’ve ever heard! With its laidback verses and la-la-las, Starman is guaranteed to blow your mind (no pun intended). The gnarly It Ain’t Easy is arguably the worst song on the album. It’s not bad and it fits as a transition between Starman and Lady Stardust, but it’s repetitive and generic on its own. Originally dedicated to fellow glam icon, Marc Bolan, Lady Stardust works as a depressant against the psychedelic Moonage Daydream and the magnificent Starman. With a sincere, darker undertone and Elton–style piano, Lady Stardust recounts the personal unnamed tragedy of Lady Stardust, another rock ‘n’ roll star. The song drowses on, as Bowie calmly chants, “And he sang all night, all night long.” Star is a snazzy rock ‘n’ roll number; it builds good momentum and kills it at each chorus. It’s not a standout, but fits perfectly in the context of Ziggy Stardust, as Ziggy romanticizes the prospect of being a rock star. The song fades out with the yearnful, “I could fall in love alright as a rock ‘n’ roll star,” taking a darker undertone. Hang On to Yourself is a standard glam rock track with an impressive riff. The iconic Ziggy Stardust is flawless. This song was staged throughout the album, and with its screaming vocals and power chords, Ziggy Stardust is sure to leave you hyped. The album continues flawlessly into Suffragette City, as Ziggy succumbs to his rising fame, eventually being swallowed by his own ego; “Oh don't lean on me man, 'cause you can't afford the ticket, I'm back in Suffragette City!” Suffragette City resembles the aforementioned Soul Love, except it chokes on its own cockiness and arrogance! The song is an overall mindblower. Oh, how Ziggy has evolved throughout the album. The eleventh and final track on the album, Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide, one of Bowie’s most dramatic and theatrical performances, Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide starts off with a calm, almost defeated melody, as Ziggy acknowledges how he has nothing in the end, having given it all to stardom. He spirals down to hopelessness, “You're too old to lose it, too young to choose it, and the clock waits so patiently on your song,” until the sudden, uplifting “Oh no, love, you're not alone!” as Ziggy desperately calls out for escapism. He calls his audience “wonderful,” begging for their hand. The album ends with Ziggy’s (Bowie) anguished screams, “Oh give me your hands!” as he perishes onstage. Truly one of the greatest closures of all times, and it sent an entire generation in an uproar. Overall, Ziggy Stardust a simply brilliant album and it pioneered the glam rock sound. It’s cocky, romantic, and notwithstandingly poignant. Following Ziggy’s tale was a rollercoaster of excitement and tears; it would be crime to give it less than five stars.
A classic. What a talent
Vraiment super ! Ca a bien vieilli, on ne dirait pas que ça date de 1972 !
Another fantastic offering from Bowie, there is a little lull half way through but apart from that it’s pure gold
Nothing need to be said about this album, it is a masterpiece.
I taped this onto casette years ago and just used to listen to it over and over. Undeniable classic. I would have to put it in my top 10-15 in terms of favorite records.
Great album!
I found zero flaws in this album, so naturally it gets maximum points
Masterful album. Love this so much from the first track to the last. Ziggy forever!
Straight up excellence throughout. Not sure about being a no-skipper, but I’d consider this a superb album cover to cover. Low 5
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
David Bowie was so cool, I'm glad to be listening to more of him. I just got Hunky Dorey a couple of days ago, so it was pretty fresh to compare. I think I liked that one better, but this is probably objectively a better album. Its absolutely wild that they made both of these at the same time though.
gênio!
Masterpiece.
So great!
My #1 album of the 1001
Nije album za svaki dan, ali sam uzivala
I like this very much :) Najbolje pjesme: 1. Starman 2. Five Years 3. Ziggy Stardust 4. Moonage Daydream 5. ... sve su skoro dobre
Excited for this one! Finally.
GOAT album from one of the all-time GOATs. Flawless.
ZIGGGYYY best bowie album yippee
Future nostalgia. The brain is a warehouse filled with images and emotions. Bowie hits it just right with the lyrics--a blend of real images and strangeness. The way "Five Years" builds is amazing and it hits that right blend of storytelling and mystery to allow you to build on it. Five years of what? prison? to live? till you grow up and become unable to experience the world as new and amazing? We all expect some kind of apocalypse. The guitar rhythms and leads are great. Love love love this album. Is this a concept album? Not really in my opinion. It has a kind of relationship among many of the songs and ties to the Ziggy Stardust persona/avatar. Good energy. Good hooks.
An incredible album that has influenced so many artists of today. David Bowie is genuinely one of the most talented and influential musicians. Five years, Moonage Daydream, and Ziggy Stardust are some of my favorites
David Bowie is quite possibly my favorite artist of all time. The fact that he can make something as mind blowing as this and its not even my favorite album by him. 11 hits zero misses. Glam rock perfection.
Majestic and groundbreaking, amazing music and aesthetics. What a contrast to the 2.5 star The Next Day which I had a couple of days ago
David Bowie was a musical genius, but I think he's one of those that you either love or you hate.
This is just exquisite. A perfect 10 from me. It’s so rare to find an album where every song is a joy to listen to and seems innovative. This is a 50 year album that sounds so contemporary. David Bowie is a musical genius.
David Bowies „Ziggy Stardust“ … ein Album, dass Geschichte geschrieben hat
First 3 x 5?
10/5 iconic
Hot take…. I don’t love every song on this! Sorry hang on to yourself! Still a 5 tho the highs are too high and just a classic.
A personal top 5 album of all time. As a kid learning to play guitar but not being very good or fast and only having metal and grunge in my musical tastes, Mick Ronson was revelatory. I would say the ziggy era is the only Bowie I really like, but even Aladdin Sane abandons so much of what makes me love this album. Five years is one of the best songs ever recorded.
hell yeah

9.9/10
That man Bowie was just built different. Nothing if not dependable and consistently interesting. I've listened to this so many times, this is an easy 5 for me. This is probably my second favorite record of his behind Hunky Dory. So many classics Five Years, Ziggy Stardust, Starman, Suffragette City. Beautifully sequenced and produced and love the way the concept ties together the playtime. Not a dull or wasted moment on here for me.
This album fucking rocks. One of the Bowie ones I have been super familiar with for awhile and have on vinyl. Love the whole story of it. Every song fits perfectly on this album and flows so well. Starting with Five Years is a great start. Love the strings in it. Moonage Daydream into Starman is one of the best 1-2 punches of all time. Moonage Daydream probably cracks best songs of all time for me. Strings toward the middle into the bomb ass solo at the end. *Chefs kiss* Listened to the second half frolicking in the snow on my way downtown. So damn good with such a solid end of Ziggy, Suffragette City, and imo one of Bowies most under appreciated songs in Rock n Roll Suicide. Had that song on so many burned cds back in the day. Thanks to Steve Zissou for that one. Loved this listen.
Best Bowie time period, period.
Another classic been spoilt recently. Love this album, would listen forever and ever.
Great classic
I was so excited for this to come up then I was so excited the whole time i was listening to it.
Boom
Iconic. One of our faves of all time. Some of Bowie's best work. Very enjoyable.
Great album. More of the songs on it deserve AirPlay '
Wow, what a masterpiece. An obvious pick for a classic sure, but absolutely with good reason. Start to finish every song on this album is perfect, giving some of the most passionate vocal performances of the decade. The opening track "Five Years" is without a doubt one of the greatest opening tracks of all time, and this album continues to blown me away even after setting the bar so high with the first song.
The best that’s ever been made. A flawless record in every way.
Are you in or are you out? Here we go!
Great as always
Love this one!!
Iconic
Really good album. Even the weakest songs on it are still great.
Probably my favorite Bowie album.
Love this album, goes hard as hell
Great album, full of classics!
2nd album from Bowie. Really enjoyed this one
This is a classic album that, for some strange reason, I had never listened to from beginning to end. I feel I have accomplished something and one can never go wrong with listening to David Bowie.
Magnificent album, finally some rock music!
Inte särskilt spännande för mig personligen men onekligen perfekt
Impresionante
Another classic. Not my favorite Bowie album but definitely top three. The beginning is a little weak but once it ramps up it's some of his best work
I liked it, I already knew many of the songs but hadn't listened to the full album before
I’m borderline on 5 or 4 stars for this one. My rating is just barely 5 stars. I don’t know why I’m so hesitant. The album has an amazing feel from start to finish. Maybe what tipped the scales to 5 for me is that so much of the music is acoustic (guitar, piano, vocals), but yet the album is still so heavy. This album is something where if I was at bar and this entire album was playing, then my reaction would be “HECK YEAH”. Maybe that’s my litmus test for a 5 star album?
FREAK OUT IN A MOONAGE DAYDREAM OOOOOOH YEEEEEAH!!!!
I probably listen to this album two or three times a year. It’s no doubt five stars.
It was good :3
Starman fucking rocks!
1/1001 22/12/23 94/100 Tracklist Five Years 10 Soul Love 8.5 Moonage Daydream 9.5 Starman 10 It Ain’t Easy 9.5 Lady Stardust 9.5 Star 9.5 Hang on to Yourself 8 Ziggy Stardust 10 Sufragette City 8.5 Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide 10 Really Good album, nice songs and also lyrics. It is a very enjoyable experience with spectacular sounds. It’s not a comfort zone album for me but I enjoyed it so much Re-listening rating: 8/10
Amazing album. I’d never really listened to Bowie before, but this album makes me want to explore his discography more. All of the songs are radio length except for “Five Years”, which means that my attention isn’t given away immediately. 5/5 Favorite: “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide”, “Hang on To Yourself”, “Ziggy Stardust” Least Favorite: I have none.
I love old school David Bowie, this album is so easy to listen to.
One of the absolute best albums ever
Kenne und liebe ich natürlich. Großartig. Definitiv unter meinen Lieblingsalben.
Great album, very captivating Top tracks: Moonage Daydream, Starman, Ziggy Stardust
Amazing.
Best David Bowie album
perfect
staaaaaaarmaaaaaaaannn
One of the all time classics adore this album start to finish (apart from it ain’t easy but I’ll usually listen on a good day)
Incredible album. Own it on vinyl. The best starting point for Bowie and has my favourite Bowie song "Moonage Daydream"
Flawless
Not sure why this was the first time I listened to this front to back - but it’s great.
Incredible album. Lyrics are other worldly. Guitar licks are catchy. David Bowie at his alter ego finest.
I will admit that this album got a little played out for me and I think I still prefer Aladdin Sane. Still, I listened to this with as fresh ears as I could and it’s pretty undeniable. The songs drip with creativity and ample greasy glam vibes. There isn’t a letdown to be had on the album and if the worst criticism that I can level is that I’ve heard it all too much, well, I certainly can’t fault the album for that. I guess this is the most backhanded 5 star review of that I’ve given thus far.
Five years ♡♡ 5/5
9/10 два велика хита, јако добар албум
first album I’ve had on this generator that I already know & love so well. specifically calls back my first year in the city where I constantly played this album for needed comfort & energy when everything else was so new
Fantastic
Everyone already knows this album is fantastic, but after relistening I am happy to report that it still is fantastic.
One of Bowie’s best. One of the most enjoyable albums ever made
Pulled at my vinyl copy which as you know means it a 5
One of the best from the absolute best. This is Bowie at his most approachable and most iconic. I think as I get older, I appreciate his other personas and albums more. To the point that I think this is one of his middle or even lesser albums. But it is the gateway to Bowie, and it is still perfect.
Phenomenal album, much to my surprise
Classic as it gets. Good pop rock that has grit
Kiinnostaa jo ennen kuuntelun aloittamista! Bowie on kova, tykkään varsinkin Space Oddity -biisistä. Starman on myös timanttinen. Tykkäsin. Kuuntelen uudelleen varmasti. Outoa mutta ei huonosti outoa. ☺️
Easiest 5 star I have given so far. An album I am so familiar with, it's an old friend to me.
This is a rock masterpiece. Classic Bowie. Love every bit of it. RIP DB
I really need to listen to more Bowie
I fucking love this album. I named my cat Ziggy Stardust. I cannot express my love enough.
Love it, 100%. I used to believe I liked Hunky Dory more, but this one really grew on me over time. Also, I might have just been trying to go counter to what felt like popular opinon.
This is my fourth David Bowie album that I've gotten, and while it wasn't my favorite of the bunch so far, I think it might be the best in terms of objective and critical quality. The Ziggy Stardust storyline and concept was absolutely brilliant, and it honestly sounded to me like Bowie sang differently on this album to further solidify the Ziggy Stardust character. Heavily incorporating gender androgyny into an album in 1972 is pretty out there, but also really bold, and this album is just another feather in Bowie's cap when it comes to tearing down gender stereotypes. Musically, I was really impressed by the production. Every track sounded great, but nothing sounded overly polished. I loved that there was a lot of subtle sounds throughout the album; guitars or other stringed instruments would be playing quietly in the background before fading out, Bowie's voice would be looped to sing multiple parts, and there were other great backing vocals as well. The guitar and piano playing were fantastic, and Bowie leveraged them to create his own unique sound that felt like it exists outside of other genres. "Ziggy Stardust" and "Suffragette City" are my two favorite tracks on the album, and I thought they both had the best guitar playing on the album. I wasn't necessarily in love with this album, but it's an incredibly impressive musical feat, and easily belongs on this list.
Prime Bowie and one of the best concept albums ever made.
Ziggy played guitar
One of those classic albums during Bowie's incredible run which basically lasted the whole of the '70s. Peerless
Sólo por Starman un 5.
There are albums that are good, there are albums that are great and there is the Canon. Those albums so far ahead of the pack that there is a special place reserved from them. This is in the rock and pop Canon.
I love this absolute classic. One of my 3 favorite Bowie records.
What can I say about this album that isn't already said. It's a damn classic album and an Un skippable album from start to finish. Just makes you want to Buggie.
this is the quintessential David Bowie album! weird, written well, great lyrics and sound!
A masterpiece
And thus, the big bang starts here. We've lived in world informed by the trails of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders of Mars for over fifty years. There was a time where such a thought was not only unfathomable but laughable. Yet here we are. This has become as ubiquitous as the speed of light, the twinkling of stars at night, whatever banal philosophical saying that is required for such things... Just listen to this album. Listen. Once you do, you will understand how and why people still gravitate to David Bowie after all these years. Better hang on to yourself when you do. P.S. after this, listen to Aladdin Sane and the soundtrack that's associated with what was, apparently, the last show Ziggy Stardust would ever do. It's a scorcher.
Geladen, zährende Leidenschaft, hoffnungsvolle Sehnsucht - Starman immer gänsehaut
Just so fucking good.
Yes
Feels like an instant classic to me. Will be listening through more of Bowie's full albums.
9/10
Aw yasss mr Bowie what a great album !! 5 years is so good I forgot how good it was tbh. So glad I’m getting the chance to listen again it has been literal ages since I did and I love this so much! Aw god it’s so funky and full of emotion and just an all round perfect album!! So happy this came up
Probably my favorite Bowie album. Solid all the way through. Something like a 4.5 for me but I'll round up.
I didn't really need to listen to this one to give it five stars, it was on repeat for most of my teen years. I haven't listened to it in a long time, though, what a joy to revisit such a perfect album.
It's Bowie, you can't go wrong.
What can I even say about Ziggy Stardust? Among my favourite concept albums, easily my favourite Bowie album, and quite possibly one of the greatest albums ever made. There is not a single bad track here. As many have pointed out, this album has one of the best opener/closer pairs ever, Five Years and Rock n Roll Suicide (perhaps an unpopular pick, but my all time favourite Bowie song). And in between are some of the best songs Bowie has ever recorded. Moonage Daydream, Starman, Ziggy Stardust, Suffragette City, all fantastic songs. Side note, I unfortunately have some bad memories associated with Moonage Daydream, so I can’t quite enjoy it as much anymore, but that doesn’t change how great the song itself is. Normally I’d probably give an album like this a 9/10. While there’s not a bad song, there are some that I’m just less into. They’re not all equally perfect. However, I don’t think there’s going to be many 10/10s for me. So if anything deserves that score, regardless of my thoughts on individual tracks, it’s Ziggy Stardust. 10/10 Top 5: 1. Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide 2. Five Years 3. Starman 4. Ziggy Stardust 5. Suffragette City
Unusual for pretty much every song to work on an album. I always forget "It Ain't Easy" is on here, and it always catches me off guard like a sonic hitman.
5/5 nieuwe banger, five years
This was one of the best listening experiences I've had the pleasure of being able to absorb for the first time. This was my first time listen to a full Bowie album front to back (I know that sounds crazy). And let me just say that this was very much LONG overdue. I need to listen to more of his albums and give it a full thorough because this man was a musical prodigy. A true gift to music. This man has a way of illustrating a simple theme at its focal point yet have that theme become so omnipresent throughout an entire listening session. This theme can become more than what meets the ears if given the chance to have frequent listens. Such a beautifully transcendent album and I can understand why people put it up there as soon of the greatest music ever made. This is something that astronauts need to be playing as they float over the entire planet. 5 OUT OF 5 FUCKING STARS. REST IN PARADISE DAVID.
not a single dud song on here. amazin
THERE'S A PARTY! A JAKER'S PARADISE!
Not just one of the best David Bowie albums, Ziggy Stardust is one of the best albums ever created by anyone. Theatrical yet packed with great pop songs, especially the title track, it straddles the line between concept album and mainstream record with finesse. It encapsulates Bowie's early period perfectly. There's gold in the next batch of albums but none are as cohesive or just plain wonderful as Ziggy Stardust.
David Bowie is probably my favorite solo artist of all time, so I have a complete bias. While I don't think Ziggy Stardust is his best album, it's definitely around the Top 5, and it's a view into a time gone by where innovation and artistry in music was at fullest display. The songs are catchy but, just like Roxy Music, and other music of the time, it is avant garde in its intent to push musical and cultural boundaries.
Ziggy played guitar
A really great album from start to finish.
I was losing faith in the recommendations the last few where not great but this is finally a change of pace. Listened to it all loved it all definitely a worthy album for the list
Sólo por Starman un 5.
Faves: Moonage Daydream, Starman, Ziggy Stardust, Rock n Roll Suicide
Being someone who mostly remarks 'meh' to Bowie stuff, I'll make an exception for this, because to me it's clearly his best work, and certainly my favourite. I'm a sucker for a concept album that's part rock and part musical theatre and this holds up 50 years on, and then some, probably one of the best early examples on how to go about it. You have every style you want from a production like that, the storytelling is great, the musicianship solid, and you get a couple of the best rock tracks of all time, although Suffragette City often gets forgotten despite being among them. It squeaks a 5 because it's truly iconic even if there are a coupla tracks I care less about.
but where were the spiders?! classic.
I'ma listen to this one on vinyl. Great album, one of the first records I bought, haven't listened to it in a while, but my prediction is five stars.
Bowie a creative genious, a Starman in the sky. It ain't easy giving this album 5/5 or is it?
Enjoyed start to finish. Not sure I get the whole alien coming to earth concept storyline but as a piece of work seemed well structured and interesting
I reckon this is the Bowiest Bowie. One of his best for me as well. Five Years is a great intro and the standard stays high throughout. The film of the last performance is worth seeing. Bowie was going a bit mad and couldn't tell himself apart from Ziggy so he announced on stage he was done after that gig. He hadn't told the band so it was a bit awkward.
Masterpiece
5/5 Lindo!
Wham bam etc
Magiskt
Perfect album. David Bowie is a treasure
This album has been one of my favourites for years, it has accomplished so much and has aged well, it has influenced and redefined glam rock, music gender, and artistry, shaping diverse music genres and fostering a sense of self-expression and innovation.
Full of random songs I've heard before, but never listened to the album. Turns out it's amazing & there's a reason it's always being brought up & mentioned. Albums like this is what's making me really enjoy this challenge.
Star ratings suck.
I just keep getting luckier and luckier, don't I? From Johnny Cash, to Michael Jackson, to David Bowie. A back-to-back-to-back string of legendary artists. This is the first real concept album that I've reviewed so far. This album is essentially a rock opera telling the story of the titular androgynous alien rock star himself, from the moment he comes to a dying earth, to what seem to be his dying moments. I don't really know what to say about this album. It is absolutely a masterpiece. For once, I don't think there are any bad songs on the album. All the others have had at least a song or two that weren't quite as good as the others. This one though? All of the songs are bangers, both on their own and as a cohesive album. The sound is triumphant and glorious, yet also showing a sign of the loss of glory that Ziggy himself faces throughout the album's story. Bowie's vocals are great, with the backing tracks being even more awesome. Everything just comes together to form an absolutely legendary album from a legendary artist. 5/5. The first of the project.
Great Album
As close to a perfect album as you can get. I miss the concept albums that tell a story throughout. Besides the obvious hits, It Ain’t Easy and Moonage Daydream are fantastic. Bowie was so far ahead of what anyone else was doing and it holds up all these years later.
Incredible record where almost every song can stand on its own, even near masterpieces like Starman and Ziggy Stardust
Five Years - Great tone setter for one of the earlier concept albums Soul Love - Love the 60s bubblegum twanged sound at the start, seamless transition from Five Years, great genre fusion Moonage Daydream - beautiful glam anthem, classic on a classic record Starman - Emotional high point and great transition to the next stage of the album It Ain't Easy - heroin song, and in a good way tbh Lady Stardust - immaculately placed power ballad, clearly an influence to much of late 70s soft rock Star - while not my favorite on the album, another track that showcases the limitless exploration of Bowie on this record Hang on to Yourself - probably the "punkiest" song on an album that clearly was very influential to the genre that decade Ziggy Stardust - the poots classic of the album. Timeless gem, I'd hear a 10 argument Suffagette City - another showcase of unreal musical exploration for the time. Amazing song Rock 'n' Roll Suicide - impactful closer and cinematic ending to the albums narrative. *I'll say 5 stars but would be 4.5 if I could. Lean 5 over 4 as it is a classic.
This is the first album we’ve been assigned that I unequivocally love.
Been a while since I've listened to the whole album. Surprised a little at how slow the album starts but still agree that it's a masterpiece overall.
Fucking solid album
