Definitely not my thing. For some reason I associate Captain Beefheart with Tom Waits based on the gravelly voices and avant garde mix of genres.

Very interesting listen, I've been meaning to listen to Captain Beefheart for a while. A great combination of electric blues and psych with a sound that is more conventional and straightforward, with less weirdness, than I was expecting, but at the same time eclectic and unique. Very cool, I think I'm a fan!

I had low expectations because i read this was supposed to be country so i was pleasantly surprised.

4.0 - A decidedly more listenable record than "Trout Mast Replica", and less of a "statement piece." There's still whacky phrasings and dissonant guitar lines. If "TMA" is the sibling who goes out of their way to annoy you, "SAM" is your lovable but eccentric grandpa who sometimes gets lost in his own head.

Trout Mask Replica was a unique fun experience. This one is a bit like the opposite. It's like Mothers of Invention where it's a fun, silly twist on traditional blues and rock. The song structures are disappointingly simple, with songs being based on some gimmick and just repeating it, maybe throwing in a surprise or two. The most intelligent parts tend to be the jam improvisations. Second side is mostly forgettable. Production quality is dog shit. Sounds gross and hardly anything is audible. There's innovation on here, signs of sucking up for commercial reasons, and plain laziness looking to fill up even a half hour. I liked quite a bit of it, but it could all be dramatically improved. Favorties: Zig Zag Wanderer, Electricity, Abba Zaba

It's funny that this band is known for their weird, grating, experimental album that most people ironically talk about instead of this totally normal and functional blues rock debut. Autumn child was good and while it might not be as interesting as trout mask replica it's sure as hell easier to listen to.

ive been a mild fan for a while but the album has made me like them more. i appreciate that they do a little bit of everything and make it a little weird

Embarrassed to admit that up until now, I thought Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa were the same person. I don't really like Zappa so I never listened to any of Beefheart's stuff. This was pretty good though, had a nice mix of blues and 60s psychedelia. Definitely too long.

This is the Captain at his best. None of the Trout Mask Replica intellectual nonsense. Actual songs, with melody and a great showcase for his vocal range and dexterity. The production/ sound of every instrument on this is raw and organic- always loved the odd drum patterns in Beefhearts music. Perfect mix of accessible and experimental. That said, some of the jams towards the end are a bit tedious but overall its magic!

"Zig Zag Wanderer" - a bop, "I'm Glad" - a sad banger. Cpt. Beefheart & His (indeed) Magic Band had absolute range with this album. Loved loved it!

Enjoyed this. Way more bluesy than I was expecting (the only other Captain Beefheart album I’ve briefly heard was a lot more ‘out there’ from memory). Lyrics are whacky, timing and composition is almost jazz at times, and it’s just very nice. Something almost comforting about it despite it bordering strange. Really liked the experimental parts to this too, managed to keep it interesting for the most. Already onto another listen so will definitely be back again. Highlights: dropout boogie, I’m glad, abba zaba.

I vaguely know the name captain beefheart and for some reason I thought they were meant to be completely crazy and strange, maybe their later albums are weirder? This was definitely odd in places, particularly the singing, but largely it was bluesy pop rock not too dissimilar to other bands at the time. Kept my interest a bit more than similar bands but wouldn't particularly recommend this album, 2.5

Sort of generic and sort of different. Wouldn't listen again, but glad I did. Autumn's Child was my favourite track, and I rather enjoyed some of the instrumental tracks at the end.

Glad this came up, been wanting to give captain beefheart a go for ages. Had a mate at uni who used to go on about him all the time This was good mostly. Very bluesy. Some tracks got a bit weird, which I think is characteristic of him. Not too weird though! Thought the first half was better than the latter. 3.5

Its a great album, altough it can be a little hard to listen if the person are not used to prog/jazz/experimental. But for me its amazing.

I only knew "so glad" which is a song I really liked, but the rest of the album was great too! Seems like quite a progressive sound for 1967, I can see how it has gone on to be very influential.

Same thing I'm gonna hit this with 30 secs per song. Initially I love the whole cap beefheart phenomenon. The music sounds derivative tho. Maybe that's cuz it's one of those situations where everyone copied it. Im gonna listen to this as if it was the first time anyone did anything like this. Which I bet is the case cuz I know beefhearts story. It's a little presumptuous to make this album 70 minutes you fucking artistic ass fuckhead. Is dropout boogie a song that got ripped off by cream. I'm glad is my fav so far. Trout mask replica is a cool ass album but listening to cap beef in one sitting is a lot to ask. I guess if you're trying to blast minds pre summer of love then you gotta go to extremes. Wish I brought water on this bus. I think I'm done with this one. I gave it a lot of chances. It's fine for what it is. Which is revolutionary.

Kinda cool I guess

The bold Captain Beefheart... trout mask man wrote a real album. And it's actually kinda fun. I went in blind aside from knowing and listening to trout mask and I love the dudes voice. This album is filled with blues rock and drive. Some of the middle tracks were okay but it started strong for sure.

The level of influence is immediately obvious - I definitely hear a lot of White Stripes in here, like on Yellow Brick Road. Zig Zag Wanderer is a massive banger.

Mixed bag. Some good, some fine, some too weird. Clearly very experimental and influential though.

When I saw Captain Beefheart, I got a little worried. This is the guy who created Trout Mask Replica after all. So I was prepared for something really out there. But this wasn't like that at all. This is mostly just a slightly above average psych rock album. I will clarify that this album is still definitely weird. There are plenty of strange, and even mildly unnerving, moments on this, where you can only wonder what kind of mental state he was in to create something like this. Beefheart also has a really interesting voice. Again, it's weird, but it fits the sound. The one song I can really praise is I'm Glad. This feels like the song where the other band members play their parts the best, especially the backing vocals. It is just a very simple and lighthearted love song that I really enjoy. Rating: 6/10

Albums like this grow on you after a while. I like it better with each listen. All the songs are good listens there are a few standouts: I'm Glad, Yellow Brick Road, Plastic Factory 3.75/5

Captain Beefheart is definitely a name I’ve come across before. You do t forget a name like that, do you? I’m not actually sure I’ve heard anything by him or his Magic Band before. Something is telling me to expect southern rock, but I’m not positive. Well let’s have a listen and find out if he can live up to his name (whatever that means). Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Grown So Ugly There were parts of this album that I quite enjoyed, but for the most part it just felt very middle of the road to me. Nothing about it blew me away. It felt like if you were to ask ChatGPT to write some dirty southern rock - it didn’t really stand apart from others. Even after listening, I’m not sure I’d recognise if Captain Beefheart came on the radio. It’s fine music, but nothing amazing so I’m not going to be rushing to hear more.

Jam band for the psych rock era. At times slow and dreary, but at others bizarre and esoteric. You hear echos of the style in more well known acts like The Rolling Stones, The Doors and Cream. Perhaps Beefheart was just a little more out there without the usual hooks those other acts were so good at melding with the quirky guitars and early synth sounds. This might be why the recognition for the layered intricacies did not come immediately (or ever).

The production is so bad its good - like a Velvet Underground album. The tunes are bouncy and raw like ? and the Mysterians. There's a little Motown soul in here, too. It's weird but I like weird.

Possibly my fav of his.

Having Trout Mask Replica as my only reference for Captain Beefheart albums, this debut was completely underwhelming from the get-go. After adjusting to this new level of accessibility, I started appreciating the, still experimental, mix of blues and acid rock. The record peaks at 'Electricity' and 'Yellow Brick Road' and then never really lives up to those two tracks on the final songs. Toss in a less than stellar production, and my overall impression of the album ends where it began: underwhelmed.

There are signs of the madness that was to come on “Electricity”, but it’s still hard to fathom that there’s only two years between this and the insanity that is Trout Mask Replica. Also it seems that there is no proper way of getting into Captain Beefheart. Start at Safe As Milk? Trout Mask Replica will eat you alive. Start with Trout Mask Replica? Everything else will seem sane and borderline boring in comparison.

I thought this was a decent album. That is until I got to electric. I want some of this weed.

It seems like there are 3 different flavors here... the more straightahead blues rock showcased by Sure Nuff and Zig Zag Wandered. I find these the most successful, and the more Beefheart starts experimenting (Dropout Boogie, Electricity, Abba Zaba), its comes off as a bit weird. The third flavor is psychedelia... I thought i was listening to Piper at the Gates of Dawn when Autumn's Child spun up. Interesting.

Not a bad listen. First song, Sure 'Nuff 'n' Yes, I Do, I really liked, the back half of the album didn't hold up as well I thought. A 2.5 for me.

That was a fun, bluesy ride. That's definitely a nice surprise from a band with a really dumb name. "Yellow Brick Road" had a nice plot twist in the middle. I will definitely give this album another listen.

due to being young i hold a prejudice against the sound of some 60s albums being very swallowed up, but this does a good job of pushing past that regardless and sounding pretty good. though i mostly only like half of the album, namely "dropout boogie", "i'm glad", and "autumn's child".

Some blues guitar riffs and harmonica give this a bluesy feeling with the rest of the album sounding like a bit like a mixture of the Who and George Thorogood rock.

This was great, eccentric Blues. I even listened to the additional 7 bonus tracks I was so intrigued. Ultimately an artist I had been meaning to check out long term and glad to finally get the opportunity.

Gets an extra star for not being Trout Mask Replica

Can't sing to save his life. Seriously, his voice was so irritating. A lot of the songs are overly simplistic, too. Some of the later ones might be good with a different singer, but still, this shouldn't be on the list. His Spotify bio makes him out to be some kind of genius. Well, okay, I'm not buying it. Bluesy and bizarre, shows how Captain Beefheart could have been the greatest rock and roll band ever but couldn't resist the lure of wild experiment.

Okay, there is quite a difference between this album and "Trout Mask Replica". Essentially, when Captain Beefheart is not trying to be the most unique person in the room (or the whole world), his music is really good. Perfect combination of blues, psych rock, traditional rock, with a big dose of weird Captains vocal. I'm still not used to it, but when the music is more comprehensive and not as exaggerated, it doesn't bother anyone that much. After the lowest note for TMR, it is time for some redemption. Now that I know more of their music and their history, aI can say that maybe it wasn't the most appropriate note. To balance it out, I'll give a good 4/5 for Safe As Milk, even though it really deserves a note like this without this background.

3/5. About as safe as can be. Yes, it’s a little weird and silly, but not crazy. It’s a blues-rock album at the end of the day with its jams and some psychedelic themes. There are some catchy songs but mostly just experimental.

Not as great as the unavailable Trout Mask Replica, but still a great introduction to the acid blues of Captain Beefheart. Some of the tracks are more straightforward blues than others, definitely a lot of drug fueled experimentation, but it never feels overdone. There are some tracks that border on radio friendly. Also surprisingly fresh given its age. Sort of sounds like if someone made nails on a chalkboard pleasing to the ears. Ry Cooder’s guitars playing is phenomenal, as are Van Vliet’s vocals.

Got into this a good decade or so ago, needs a couple of listens to appreciate how great it is, while also being pretty accessible straight away. I love the fact that Dropout Boogie is followed immediately by I'm Glad, two songs that couldn't be more different to eachother. The listener settles back and relaxes into the silky soul. And then wham! Electricity wallops them in the face. So many bangers. Fucking magical album.

Beefy is always suitably weird

Just a little weird. Some of the bluesier songs are fantastic. Some of it gets a bit experimental and drags for someone who's not very into that style. I hear this is the less weird of some of his albums, so I don't think I'm likely to go seek those out, but there are a few songs on here that I wouldn't mind popping up on a playlist here and there in the future.

A fantastic album. As a big Tom Waits fan, I was put onto this album a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Interesting sound throughout and well worth the listen.

This is an assortment of forgettable rock-pop tracks with nothing special going on in any of them. They definitely cultivated a sound and style unique to them, but the only issue is that it’s not enjoyable whatsoever. It makes the music a little grittier, but in a disorienting way that leaves the listener with a headache. The last track caught my attention after all the repetitive songs before. Couldn’t save the album, though. 2/5

So this is Captain Beefheart… it’s decent, I think? Not sure why he has such a cult following, but I can see the appeal of his slightly manic, unpredictable energy, especially when combined with accessible tunes. I mean, to my 21st century ears it sounds gently eccentric rather than wildly inventive, but it’s probably fair to assume that some of the weirder tracks would’ve been a bit ‘out there’ in 1967.

Safe As Milk is probably the most accessible Captain Beefheart I’ve listened to but that doesn’t mean it lacks weird. I’ve always enjoyed this album, bluesy, Jammy, quirky. Beefheart even slows it down and gets romantic on I’m so Glad. This is a 5 star

I was expecting much more weirdness as it is Captain Beefheart but this was relatively normal and accessible. This wasn't at all similar to much of the work he's done with Frank Zappa even though some of it is more "normal". I will probably go back and listen to this again.

I enjoyed this WAY more than the Trout one he did two years later. Experimental and plain kooky in parts, but there's enough on here to find some enjoyable country-blues-psychedelic rock that is enjoyable.

This is why you need to listen to the whole album, folks. This one kicked off strong but then started to go sideways by song 4. It seems like someone tried to course correct on song 5 but it wasn't enough and the whole thing just unraveled into a weird mess by the end. When it was good, it was really quite good. But when it wasn't, it really wasn't.

I enjoyed the somewhat weird blues here.

I didn't have the foggiest notion what to expect from the album, and the first track had be quite intrigued with the blues jam. The rest of the album was hit and miss for me though. I am glad to have listened multiple times today, but as an album, I don't think that this one makes my list.

I've heard of Captain Beefheart a lot but had not ever listened and expected something much weirder. This is a charming, fairly unweird, blues-rock album and I liked it very much.

I debated whether to listen to the stereo or mono releases of this album and then decided to try both. I was surprised at the difference - the stereo presentation opens up the songs and I the difference was a lot more than I expected. This is one of those bands I kept hearing of over the years but I didn’t have any sense of what their music was like. The blues are strong here and I liked that part, but the more rock guitars and other interesting bits (like a theremin!) really hooked me. I didn’t think this was my style of music but Captain Beefheart may have made that thought obsolete. I guess I like my blues with a hit of acid. I listened to this four times in a row and each time liked this more and more. Fantastic!

Pretty standard late 60’s sound. It was good but nothing really hooked me.

Ik dacht dat dit te raar zou zijn voor me, maar dit album is nog heel prima te pruimen. Met regelmatige vlagen wat aparte vocals, begeleid door heerlijke blues-achtige oude rock. Dan is het vooral de vraag of de zang teveel gaat irriteren en dat deed het gelukkig niet. Dat de individuele nummers en het album zelf ook niet te lang zijn helpt wel mee. "Dropout Boogie" en "Plastic Factory" zelfs in een playlistje geplempt.

Not quite sure about this. I've always seen them as a kinda joke band. I guess they're a particular flavour but one I don't relish. It's not bad but unspectacular.

Fine blues

It's no Trout Mask Replica, but it'll do. "Safe As Milk" is funny as titles go. Wikipedia says that there was a ton of controversy with this album, and it eventually led to the band getting dropped by A&M. Without listening to the lyrics, this is a "safe" album. Musically it fits with its era. Safe. The lyrics are humorous. There's a lot of personality in this collection of songs. I love its sense of whimsy.

A surprisingly accessible Beefheart effort with some fun takes on Delta Blues meets early rock. Does run a bit long, but probably would’ve checked out earlier if the tracks weren’t as interesting or unique.

I expected to either hate or love this album, but it was pretty down the middle for me. A few things I disliked, quite a few a like, but a lot of it didn't catch my attention. I wonder what I'll think of the other album on here. My favourite song was I'm Glad.

Captain Beefheart is completely new to me. I can picture dropping acid in the 60's and hearing this album and having my mind blown. It pulls from different styles while also being a bit off the wall and avant-garde. I can hear how they are influential. Some of the songs I wasn't as into. I really liked Dropout Boogie. It makes me picture a bunch of Muppets singing it. Electricity is so weird, but I find myself enjoying it. Yellow Brick Road is catchy, in a fun way. Some of the songs are a little too much for me, but I get the appeal.

Definitely not for everyone. If you're a Beefheart fan (and I am) this is a great album. He eventually quit making music and changed to being a visual artist because (supposedly) he could never get the musicians to play the music the way he heard it in his head.

Neat blues record with some really cool riffs. Definitely prefer the mono recording but can definitely see myself coming back to a few songs.

Lots of different genres of rock and different singing styles. One of the singers sounds like he's already dead. I ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would.

Strange, edgy, psychedelic blues rock with some cool riffs. It's kind of muddy sounding and a lot of the lyrics were hard to decipher, but that's probably the point. I like a little weird in the norm. This guy wasn't following anyone's directions. Don't think this one is too difficult to get through, it's quirky enough where it's kind of a fun adventure. Safe as Milk is a great title. I am terrified of their next album on the list, though. 2.5

The first half of the album wasn't bad, but once it got into the instrumental only stuff it just got weird and annoying.

Liked the opening blues track. Some of the other tracks sound like they're very much of the 60s but not too bad. Some tracks remind me why I never really got into Captain Beefheart.

De weirdness van Trout Mask Replica is een stuk minder op dit album te luisteren, ondanks nog wat absurde teksten na.

This guy must've been on so many drugs that it's near unimaginable, that's the only way I could understand coming up with an album like this. It's almost like nothing I've heard before and yet, there's something about it that keeps me listening.

This album was... weird. As you may have guessed from the band name and the album title. The first song, I was thinking it seemed more like ZZ Top than the Frank Zappa-sounding stuff I was imaging would be on here. But after that it got psychedelic and strange. I want to listen to this more to figure it out. I think I like it, but I was listening to it while watching work training and figuring out how to use Teams and the vibes were just too different for me to fully appreciate.

Clangy guitar and peculiar lyrics and vibe. It's just all a bit weird, but in line with the time. 3.5 for me

Too weird for the sake of being weird

I bought this album a few weeks ago. It's funny because for years, I avoided Captain Beefheart like the plague, just because of the hoax/scam/swindle that Trout Mask Replica is (at least to my ears). I think I'm an open-minded person, but there's a limit to the sort of musical nonsense one should be exposed to. And affecting some sort of conceptual pretension to justify the barrage of sheer crap that this other record is is NOT an acceptable solution for me. I'd rather plug my ears with toilet paper, thank you. In other words, Thelonious Monk, my ass (to refer to a stupid comparison I've often read to describe Beefheart's hoax here). Trout Mask Replica is just an interesting footnote in the pages of music history, not an essential album you must absolutely listen to. I'll fight tooth and nail anyone who says the contrary. Even a genius like David Lynch (who once said he loves this record). The thing is, it was a stupid mistake on my part to start my exploration of Beefheart's repertoire with this particular album. As it turns out, I really like what Beefheart and his "magic band" did before TMR (*Safe As Milk*) and after it (*The Spotlight Kid*). The grassroots yet twisted tunes of *Safe As Milk*, especially, have something quite addictive to them. Beefheart's growl on this collection of blues songs serves them right--as in opener "Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do"--just as said growl nicely contrasts with the stellar musicianship of the band (including a young Ry Cooder, or so I hear). I also enjoy the stylistic asides this record go through, especially the more psychedelic cuts or that mock doo wop soul ballad that "I'm Glad" is. And my oh my! "Electricity". What an incredible track! Here is the sort of experimentation that can be both haunting and mesmerizing. I know David Lynch has been listening to this song as well (there's a literal quote of Von Vliet's delivery of the song's chorus in the Twin Peaks movie, for instance). And here I certainly won't contend with man's genius. This song and its incredible instrumentation is the cherry on the cake here. And its inclusion in *Safe As Milk* finally reconciled me with anything Beefheart. Except Trout Mask Replica, of course. Maybe with more *real* groove and a theremin, as in "Electricity", I would have liked that other album. Too bad Von Vliet never thought of that. I'm familiar with trout mask replica, so I feared the worse, but this wasn't half bad, I quite enjoyed it. Definitely worth a second listen.

p104. 1967. 3.5 stars. 60s psychedelic blues/rock smorgasborg. Great vocals. Ry Cooder on top form. Still sounds great now. All that is missing are some standout tunes. Points deducted for filler and outstaying its welcome - nobody needs an album with several tracks >6 mins.

This is with a caveat. I assume Trout Mask Replica will be on the list. I would only include one Captain Beefheart release and that would be it. Safe as Milk introduced the Captain's odd, avant guard version of blues-rock. This is more "commercial" than the releases that would follow. It is very strange and explosive at times but is still mainstream. I don't play Captain Beefheart often, but this is compelling, challenging rock.

Very strange and very 60s. At times it sounded Like a psychedelic Howlin Wolf but also sounds like early Dead on the blues songs.

1967, Captain Beefheart ffs. I said this on an album about 2 days ago (also from the late 60s, because they all are), and I think this proves my point well: he just included anything and everything from this time period. It fucking sucks. For over an hour. 2/5.

About as good as it gets. First track 'Sure 'Nuff 'n Yes I Do' has one of the greatest opening lines in rock music. The run of 'Electricity', 'Yellow Brick Road', Abba Zabba' and 'Plastic Factory' is remarkable, packing in more than many bands do in their careers. 'Abba Zabba' is one of my favourite songs of all time - there's one point where Ry Cooder's guitar simply glides. Beefheart sounds utterly demented, utterly in control. There was no need for any blues rock after 'Plastic Factory', it's all there, right there.

Very weird album but judging by the artist's name and album title this comes as no surprise. Despite its oddities, I am enjoying this album so far. While it's a very interesting and unique sound and I'm happy having experienced it once, I don't think this is something I'd listen to again.

Largely cathartic for me. As you know I dated Shelley Beefheart for 4 years and she made me cum a lot. Captain Beefheart was always a bit of a prick to me because I was fisting his sister.

I hadn't listened to this before. It sounds like Beefheart, but with the rough edges filed off. It gives you an idea that without the madness, he'd be a good bluesman. But the weirdness is so much more fun.

Oh Captain my Captain! The thing that really annoys me about Trout Mask is that is completely overshadows the rest of his his exceptional output. Lennon loved this record and for two good reasons: great song writing and a great performance by the band. He sets the template for so much pop music to come, he's got a fine ear for melody does Don, but he also know how to create the right feel through the performance. We often think about the context in which these 60's records appear, and this must have sounded amazing to 1967 ears. So much of what he's doing with each and every genre on this record has now become part of the modern soundscape, but back then, oy vey! Ry Cooder is Al Kooper's music doppelganger, whenever he pops up, he does to great effect. I don't think he's ever been on a bad record, what a player. And who has been listening to this record in their sheds eh? I'd count young Tommy Waits and those two kids from Akron Ohio known as the Black Keys as dedicated fans of this album amongst many others. And I wonder if Georgie Harrison started thinking about doing his thing on the slide after listening to this (might be why he asked Delaney to show him how to do it). Each song is splendid, a truly great record.

Yeah, nah. I'm sure if I really paid attention I could find something interesting in Ry Cooder's early guitar work, but the whole thing just isn't working for me. Perhaps (like the recent album from Country Joe) it's great listening for someone who's high, and/or hearing it when it first came out?

A lot of the Captain’s work is difficult to deal with. However this, their debut album, is user-friendly. Musically, it takes no prisoners. Lyrically, it’s not always easy to decipher, but it’s far easier than what was to come on future lp’s. Ry Cooder has a lot to do with the quality of this recording. Both his playing & arranging. The album kicks arse from the opening tracks, Sure ‘Nuff ‘N Yes I Do & Zig Zag Wanderer, which is one of Beefheart’s most covered songs. It’s very blues-influenced but, like most Beefheart, manages to maintain it’s very own flavour.

Captain Beefheart is an artist that has been on my list for trying to get into. I've tried to listen to Troutmask Replica a few times, with little success. It is the musical equivalent of Joyce's Ulysses; lauded by some, but impenetrable and difficult. Maybe starting with Troutmask is jumping into the deep end too soon, so I was glad to see this come up on the list. I wanted to give the Captain a real chance with a more approachable record. So, sitting down to really listen (and I listened through three times), this album I really liked. It sounds like some of the edgier rock of 1967 (Zappa, Velvets), but more firmly rooted in the blues. The Captain's vocals are surreal and gruff (obviously influence on later Tom Waits), but not so far out into left field as to be incomprehensible. MVP is Ry Cooder, whose playing is superb, and you can tell the songs that he did the arrangements for. Standout tracks: Sure Nuff 'n Yes I Do, Dropout Boogie, Electricity, Plastic Factory and the cover of Grown So Ugly. Enjoyed, would listen again, and feeling better prepared for Troutmask when it turns up on the list.

Not my cup of tea. I appreciate the early 60s psychedelic sound reminiscent of early Floyd, the Yardbirds, Jefferson Airplane, etc.

Reminds me a lot of Love, or Mothers Of Invention, but I like both of those bands' sound more. "Where There's Woman" was the only song I ended up saving.

The album title served as protest for the pollution in foods, refering that not even milk from moms was safe to drink. Blues oriented and the band without having room to grow managed to express themselves

I fail to see how this album is on a 1001 list. The band was all over the place and it sounded like they were trying to ride on the coat tails of the Beatles and other mid to late 60's bands. Pick a genre and stick with it. Maybe lay off the drugs when writing the lyrics. Even if it was written in satire it wasn't executed as a top 1001.

Man, this was just too damn weird. There are some cool parts where the weirdness works, but far too much of it is bad weird. And the album is too long. Favorite track: Call on Me

Only knew the weird, brilliant Trout Mask Replica of Beefheart, was surprised by this more traditional debut album. Was pleasant surprise. The last bonus track Korn Ring Finger is addictive, had to play it over and over

Their voices are quite grating and really not my thing. To me, sounds like hillbilly rock that is the precursor to current bad country music. Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, more like Captain Vegetableheart and is Lacklustre Band, there is absolutely nothing beefy or magical about this group or album, super whiny and the twang of the guitars coupled with his voice hurt my ears. What's with the album cover - using the fish-eye lens trying to be edgy and cool, only a British band could pull the look off successfully. Best: Autumn's Child Worst: Yellow Brick Road NOTE: Spotify had the CD bonus tracks, I only listened to the original 12 tracks.

Call on Me is a fun time. So is Yellow Brick Road - very much enjoying the rhyming in that one. Whatever they're doing to their guitars in Dirty Blue Gene is pretty funky and fairly interesting. Love the band name.

Ali odatle znam za njih. Ovaj album sam ove godine dao poslušati, i svidio mi se. Normalniji je album, to je sigurno, blues je jako prisutan i taj stari, analogni zvuk, ne znam kako bi opisao - mi se jako sviđa. Abba Zaba mi je favoritna sa albuma, ima još ponekih, ali se uvijek ove sjetim pa ću ju napisati evo sada upravo. '67 godina is fucking stacked with classics!

Not my jam. Very 60’s blues vibe though

This album was pretty decent. Had a bunch of different styles played throughout. Overall I felt it to have strong blues vibes while still having a classic prick sound. Overall not really any song in particular stood out but for this album coming out in the 60s it felt ahead of its time. 6.3/10

This was okay. It kind of sounded like a blend of other stuff to me; nothing really stood out as unique about it. Whoever decided on the album title has clearly never gotten food poisoning from dairy.

Un album qui mérite une réécoute rien que pour l'entrée en matière du capitaine Victor Mc Bernik. Ce dernier va en effet lâcher son célèbre "Eeeeeleeectricityyyyy" et totalement relancer le projet qui commençait à battre de l'aile. Les interventions tardives du docteur Spratt et de la Sardine seront tout aussi délicieuses.

Quel retour fracassant de Victor MacBernik. Après des années de disette, la faute à l'arrêt du programme "La Famille Pirate", Victor s'est vu redonner une chance de démontrer l'étendu de son talent. Le moins que l'on puisse dire, c'est qu'il a su saisir l'opportunité qui s'offrait à lui. Sur le titre Electricity, il viendra absolument tout donner, nous offrant un "EEEEEEEEEEEElectriciTYYYYYYYY" des plus merveilleux, qui ne manquera pas d'être repris par petits et grands. Je n'ai qu'un mot: bravo.

art-blues? zappa like sounds on some songs but very bluesy

This was interesting, kind of a bluesey experimental album. I'm guessing that Captain Beefheart enjoyed his share of drugs during the making of this. The (7!) bonus tracks made the album way too long.

I like the first song as the LP starts off with some well played Mississippi blues. The album soon starts to drag. I didn't know Ry Cooder's history so this aspect was interesting. Overall it's so-so 60s stuff. I know my point of reference for 1967 comparisons is releases like the White Album which isn't fair but, hey, who said life was fair? --

I like the rhythm tracks to every song, especially the bluesy guitar - I thought maybe I would have enjoyed it more if the Captain's vocal delivery was dialed back a bit, but without that weirdness it would have been just another 60s psychedelic blues album. As it is, It's a brave and eclectic for 1967.

After listening to Trout Mask Replica this seems almost quaint and accessible. But that being said, psychedelic delta blues isn't my jam so it didn't move me much. I find the album cover pic showing them all clean cut and in suits to be a pretty interesting contrast to their latter day hippie counter-culture personas.

Great debut record. Mixes genres (psychedelic rock, garage rock, doo-wop, r&b, etc.). Pretty accessible for a Captain Beefheart record, but is just enough “out there” to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Ok, this is pretty damn brilliant and wild fun. Absurd, but rooted in the familiarity of blues and r&b, so much of the sound is a real romp. I’ll need to give it another listen or two in order to process more of the lyrics. After a second listen, I’m really blown away. Favorite tracks are Sure ‘Nuff Yes I Do, Electricity, Yellow Brick Road, Abba Zaba, and Plastic Factory. Beefheart has an intense, rumbling voice with great charisma. The music is played brilliantly, whether it is a rootsy blues, or a lurching and leaping number with changes in time, tempo, and attitude. Gonna need to spend more time with this band.

Not my favorite

The album isn't that good. It is eccentric and doesn't really have a purpose or a way. It is not really a 2 but I will round up.

So eclectic, at some points made me feel like I was in one of those dreams where you can't tell if it's a nightmare or not. Like any minute something will go wrong but it never quite does.

Normally I like late 60's experimental/psychedelic/garage music, but this didn't do much for me. It was probably pretty cool when it first came out but it hasn't aged well. Didn't hate it, but didn't enjoy it much either. 3 stars.

This was dope! Solid bluesy classic rock with some wacky elements and a wicked howl on vox. Other beefheart stuff is a lil too chaotic jazz rock for me to have enjoyed it. Side bar, there was a bit on the Mark Maron show (I think that was a thing?) where he was like I needed a project so thought I'd try to get into Captain Beefheart, but I was so nervous buying it at the record store cuz I'm not cool enough and everyones laughing at me. But he buys this album (I'd guess it was this one, don't remember) and then hes at a taqueria afterwards and the cashier is like "Oh I love Captain Beefheart, Safe As Milk is a great starter album". Haha kind of how I feel.

If John Lennon thinks your milk is safe enough to be placed on his fridge doors, then it's good enough for the rest of us. Safe as Milk provides a plentiful introduction into the madness that occupied the brain of one Don Van Vliet; a madness that would coagulate into creating one of the most infamous albums ever recorded. But that had yet to be seen as this album fits into neat pockets of R&B musings and fledgling psychedelic rock, showcasing that the Magic Band can remain in the game while being simultaneously out of it. This milk is safe enough for me. Favorites: Sure 'Nuff 'n' Yes, I Do, Zig Zag Wanderer, Call on Me, I'm Glad, Abba Zaba, Where There's Woman, Grown So Ugly, Autumn Child, Safe as Milk - Take 5, On Tomorrow, Trust Us - Take 9.
