Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Too odd for me.
If you like Captain Beefheart, you are a fucking asshole.
I don't know what Frank Zappa, whose music I love, saw in this guy, but to me he is unlistenable.
Spoiled like milk
Oh dear
On "Safe As Milk", Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band use blues as a jumping off point for sonic experimentation. Instead of trying apply a virtuoso approach to the blues (a la Clapton or Jeff Beck), Don Van Vliet and his crew go the other direction, embracing the rattier, dirtier side of the genre in an attempt to innovate by (ironically) adopting a near-primitive approach to the music. Trouble is that it doesn't amount to much, because it's only a half-step and doesn't come anywhere close to the transformative power of what The Cramps or The Gun Club (for example) were able to bring to the form. It also sounds like it was recorded for $5, which doesn't help either.
La verdad, no me gustó.
ass cheeks
i still have ptsd from trout mask replica……. while this was sort of better i just couldn’t take it seriously
Certain albums just don't fucking belong.
As stated when the last Captain Beefheart landed on the list. One or two songs are okay but for the most part have no interest in his odd mix of music.
schwach
Bro, this album aged like milk Definitely not my style. I did like one song, but it felt like a chore to get through
Not my style
Not keen on this. Did not enjoy.
utter slop
I'm going full school report on this one. 4* for effort in pushing the boundaries of rock. But 1* for attainment on the basis that I really can't listen to the last few tracks again before I die. And in the final analysis, that's all that matters. 1*
Okay man. Sure. That can be an album.
This was so dumb that I was convinced I must be listening to the wrong album. Unsure why it was made.
Fun and interesting. Reminds me of a cross between The Monkees and Cat Stevens.
Don't get it.
Hippie nonsense
Really not my thing
Generic 60’s experimental bullshit mixed with just generic 60’s okay shit.
ass.
👺
You're kidding yourself if you think this is worth listening to.
Gross
A challenge I will always have with this genre is that I’m not in on the joke. Every song is a piss take of some sort, which is really not what I’m into music for, especially when it’s an ostensibly heartfelt tune like I’m Glad which does a soul song just well enough it could pass as legit, but the soul singer impersonations start to scan as racist the more it goes on. A couple Gen X weirdos had their minds kicked open by Beefheart and that’s not a bad thing. Without CB maybe you don’t get the Pixies or Tom Waits’ change in direction. But with even further remove thanks to my late Gen X age, this all feels like it’s a closed circuit and worse, the white outcast male finding voice by affecting a slightly ironic, alienated impersonation of a black soul singer is just...it doesn’t sit well.
Before they were known for their utterly wild album, Trout Mask Replica, Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band were a pretty by the books 60s Blues Rock band. Their debut album, Safe as Milk, is the most recent album in my 1001 albums to hear list to be selected for my ears and I wanted to give it a peep to see what this project has to offer in the grand year of 2025. This project really isn't anything special even for the 60s and it honestly shows to me just how novice Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band is. The one standout song here was I'm Glad, but it seems that most people who hear that song enjoy it. Everything else here felt fine and very middle of the road. None of the songwriting, instrumentation, or even effort felt all that special or unique and this album just went in one ear and out the other. Wish I had more to say here but unfortunately this was just not it for me y'all.
gives me a headache...
Nudlande bluesrock. Nejtack
awful vocals and obnoxious riffs
This started off as a 3 for me with the first couple of songs. Midway through, the vocals started grating on my nerves. By the end of the album, I found it unlistenable.
One of those cults that’s not actually much good.

Interesting but not for me. 1/5
1/10. Listened to "Trout Mask Replica" instead since I swapped these albums previously.
Aged as bloody milk more like
Not a fan
not my thinggggggggg!!
LOOOOOL
Quite shit to be honest
I have no room in my beefheart for this
I really did not enjoy this bathroom at all.
So much better than I thought it would be
This wasn't for me
Too weird. Maybe I could do it another day, but I've had enough oddball crap for this to land.
I really don’t understand this album looking through the reviews I saw this is a more accessible album by the band if that’s the case I’m not looking forward to the other album because I really don’t understand the appeal
What a mess of an album
Another one I didn't finish. Found what I did hear boring and forgettable.
Another one where I'm not entirely sure why it made the cut. This being an album I "Have to hear" is insane because my life hasn't changed after this, in fact it's pretty much the same. "I'm Glad" is cool, but it would probably sound better from an actual black person, much like every single song on here.
it may have been clever to take the piss out of pop music at the time, but this aged like milk
Not into prog
Sorry Ben, not for me. I had to give up after three or four tracks.
Wtf is this? Parody? Experimental?
I read that this is their most "accessible" album. Eek. Just being weird is not enough. And bad vocals. Oh, and the name makes me fill ill.
I mean, the intro of Tubular Bells is the music for the closing scene of "The Exorcist," and that's one of the greatest uses of music in any soundtrack. But the rest of this album is bizarre.
absolutely not
Could not get through the whole thing. What absolute toss. I would rather drink gone-off-milk than listen to this again.
I. Hate. This.
Na
Was ok, a bit too alternative for my taste
That was alright, not sure what makes it so good? Just an incomprehensible grumbling for the most part.
This dude sings so bad, it's like spoiled milk. Good lord, this is horrid to listen to.
Some annoying choices were made in the production of this album. I hope they had fun.
One word: mediocre.
Puh. Nee. Gar nicht mein Geschmack. Viel zu langatmige Titel.
Ew. 1/5
This one felt like work to get through
Hmmmm...
Don’t ever put this shit on again
una verga
UNA VERGA
Sure 'Nuff 'n' Yes, I do: 2/10 the music is ok, his voice is horrible imo Zig Zag Wanderer: 5/10 Call On Me: 3/10 Dropout Boogie: 1/10 I'm Glad: 3/10 Electricity: 1/10 i can't listen anymore Not my cup of tea, I also think it's pretty bad 1/5 star
God Damn its bad
Not really my thing. Appreciate the authenticity though
Dreadful
gar nicht mein Stil, und vor meiner Zeit
Musste abbrechen, treibt einem in den Wahnsinn...
Þetta er frábært dæmi um tónlist sem ég fíla en er bara hryllilega illa samin, flutt og ég get bara grátið.
Not really my thing.
Can't sing to save his life. Seriously, his voice was so irritating. A lot of the songs are overly simplistic, too. Some of the later ones might be good with a different singer, but still, this shouldn't be on the list. His Spotify bio makes him out to be some kind of genius. Well, okay, I'm not buying it. Favourite track: Autumn's Child
Not my taste, didn't like it
Maybe classy, but non relevant; not actual, srry 1/5
I didn't like this music, too chaotic, maybe for others it might be nice
Really bad
Not my cup of tea. I appreciate the early 60s psychedelic sound reminiscent of early Floyd, the Yardbirds, Jefferson Airplane, etc.
Their voices are quite grating and really not my thing. To me, sounds like hillbilly rock that is the precursor to current bad country music. Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, more like Captain Vegetableheart and is Lacklustre Band, there is absolutely nothing beefy or magical about this group or album, super whiny and the twang of the guitars coupled with his voice hurt my ears. What's with the album cover - using the fish-eye lens trying to be edgy and cool, only a British band could pull the look off successfully. Best: Autumn's Child Worst: Yellow Brick Road NOTE: Spotify had the CD bonus tracks, I only listened to the original 12 tracks.
I have no idea why anyone would want to listen to this. It is bad and annoying. Rating: 1.5/5 Playlist track: I'm Glad Date listened: 09/11/22
Did not like.
