Would give it a 4 but I don't think I'll listen to this again.
3.5/5
It's quite groovy. I like the jangly 60's bluesy / rock n roll guitars, and I like some of the weirdness and experimentation.
I feel like they could have rehearsed more, but there are interesting ideas here and there. Flavors stuff that would come down the road 10 years later, especially in American New Wave and post-punk like Talking Heads, Pere Ubu, or Devo. When this was released it was probably quite a bit more challenging than it is today (almost 60 years later!!!). Mostly typical 1960s blues-inspired meanderings, like every other psychedelic era band, but with less attention to hooks and more Dadaism. Wondering whether Cap'n Beefheart suffered from some mental illness, and I don't say that in a joking or judgemental way, but I sincerely wonder if everything was going okay. I hear a little anguish in the vocals, and I could be mistaking Beefheart's method of self-expression for true pain. So maybe in the end, the Blues was sincere. This music walks on the ol' line between madness and art. Captain Beefheart is just over the line a little bit, at times on this album and ABSOLUTELY on the upcoming Trout Mask Replica. And that makes stuff like this even more interesting. Is it good? hmmm
Little psychedelic, but pretty enjoyable
Very catchy and original and well played. I'd like to revisit.
Bluesy, jangly, has a real late 60's sound, Airplane etc, the lyrics are cynical for the times. 'I'm Glad'is a bit of a goof on R&B.
This is a name I've known but can't say I really know who they were. This was good though, really enjoyed it.
bom
Wel flink beter dan dat andere album van ze, beetje blues achtig. Verder niet heel veel aan dus een lage drie sterrren.
it started off as a 3/5 then i fell asleep and woke up to two thirds of the way throguh the penultimate song and got to listen to the rest pf that and the last song. it got wacky im confused. i dont jnow hwloe any of it happened
Fun but could have leaned into the wackiness a bit more
A lot of fun. Experimental blues. And like make experiments, there are varying levels of success. Some of the material on this record is genius, but it's too inconsistent. Three stars.
Taj Mahal played on this album. 5 stahs
Classic
Truly groundbreaking stuff, but not easy to listen to. 3/5
I liked the mix of it being experimental and also solid in terms of songwriting.
This is a million times better than Trout Mask. Why didn't they expand upon THIS?
some cool ideas but falls flat on many songs mayb 7/10
Some very clearly blues-inspired rock to be found here, with some more quirky tracks such as Electricity. Admittedly it feels a little barebones at points but overall its a good listen.
A playful romp through the genres, they do a bit of blues soul RnB psych pop surf garage and more - bringing an off kilter but charismatic vocal and a sardonic sensibility to it all. Not as intentionally alienating as their other stuff, it ends up being a kind of fun tongue in cheek 60s tribute act by a talented troll.
its ok
Some nice songs
Couple tracks

Weird
Pretty fun, a bit too long and too much instrumental/repeats or whatever
I kind of like Yellow Brick Road, Abba Zaba; I kind of like the instrumental section at the end of Safe as Milk (Take 5)
I enjoyed the weirdness and the guitar action this album. 2.6
3.5
Mad fun
Decent album. Feel like it was on the verge greatness but fall short
A nice and chunky-sounding blues album from the eccentric who went on to make Trout Mask Replica.
It’s a 3.5 that I think I have to round down to a 3. This album is weird. Not like Morrissey-style weird where something just felt unappealing and unnatural, but like, properly weird. There’s appealing stuff on this album, and I liked a lot of it. I think it’s just kind of disjointed to me; sometimes the vocals clash with the lyrics and vice-versa, sometimes the instrumentation doesn’t quite fit the lyrical vision, or at worst, sometimes it’s just kinda boring to me. I don’t know if there’s necessarily a bad track on this album, but it’s a really diverse record that I honestly think doesn’t go far enough with its bolder choices. If you’re gonna try to be this innovative for 1967, then go all in, because it feels disconnected in a way that doesn’t melodically marry everything quite right to me. Certainly not bad though; I feel good with a 3.
Wasn't much of the first CD, but the second with the instrumental tracks were good. The first CD was filled with a lot of tracks with that stereotypical 60s sound that sounded like a bad recording. 2.5/5
I'm not a huge fan of Cptn Beefheart, but this is a much more approachable album from him/them. I do really enjoy this more than the other stuff I've heard from them and will probably revisit this in the future. 3/5
Interesting album. I liked the bluesy kind of stuff a lot. But some of the other songs were not things I like.
Not good, not bad.
Not nearly as weird as Trout Mask Replica, but still delightfully quirky and energetic. A nice melding of genres.
I expected weirdness, and Captain Beefheart absolutely delivered. Not a chance at me fully digesting & appreciating something this out there on first listen, but it was a good start.
How can a band go from a like of crap like dropout boogie to something as beautiful as I’m glad. I’m glad is doing a lot of work here. sometimes the nonsense babbling and growling works sometimes it doesn’t
This is a quintessential psychedelic rock album; I just couldn't enjoy it as much , sober.
Didn’t know Ry Cooder played guitar on this weirdo masterpiece. Respect
It’s 60’s indie rock. Nothing for me.
I love the blues! And by that I mean I like being sad. This music is fine
It was good - never heard this band.
Geen slechte muziek, maar ja ga ik het ooit nog luisteren
Opzich best aardig toch
Interessant - vollständig hören!
Listening through this album almost made me feel like it was the early evolution of what would become grunge. Maybe thats just me.
Decent album. Will listen again
You know, since I’ve already been served Trout Mask Replica I was expecting this to be a similarly rated experience but I was pleasantly surprised and impressed that this kept true to its rock and blues roots. It’s still extremely weird (I’m looking at you, Electricity) but the sound and musicality of this isn’t too far off from other bands in the time period and genre.
This one was weird, probably need to give it another listen
I can see why this album was so influential at the time. i liked a couple tracks.
Ça s'écoutait mais ça ne m'a pas tellement marqué. J'ai déjà oublié comment l'album sonnait. 6/10
Weird acid swamp rock
It was cool 60s. Sounds were a little varied from song to song. Only got one listen. Nothing specific stood out.
I have been down this rabbit hole once in the past going in with an open mind. I’m not going to listen to this album today. Once was enough.
Liked this one cover to cover. Timely tempo changes and the singer’s raspy voice kept me listening)
Interesting
I've never heard of these guys, but dig it. Some good, some not great.
Didn’t finish but enjoyed what I heard.
The is album is definitely a little different but on the whole I’ve enjoyed it. It opens with something that sounds very much like a classic blues song, but it’s a bunch of young white guys. Which led me into a tangent to see if any *actual* classic blues records are included, but it seems that the list doesn’t start until the mid-1950s. Fair enough. But I think people should check out Blind Lemon Jefferson or Leadbelly before they die. Love Abba Zaba but the album goes on too long and drifts into ridiculousness.
Okay, eclectic. It is 1967 after all. Nothing I’d want to repeat but tolerable.
A downward spiral
It's more Captain Beefheart. You can hear the transition into more wackiness in this album.
Fun if you need a mix of bluesy 70’s grindy-voice feel that descends into the bizarre, and then clingy rock. It has its moments.
#109. The first half of this album is pretty good. Some kinda bluesy psychedelic rock thing. The second half is some meandering Phishy jam band type nonsense that I don't particularly enjoy. Never heard of them before so I didn't know what to expect, and it turned out to be a bit of a mixed bag. 3/5: stick to side 1
Weird, not a huge fan.
surprised i liked some of them. most were not my thing
Zanimljiv kantri zvuk
True psychedelic rock album. Although quite long, it gives certain, original vibes nowhere to be heard.
Im not sure what I just listened too It felt like a frog on an acid trip for some songs, and then they throw out a song like “im glad” in the middle of the mix, to make you ask yourself if you’re actually the frog on the acid trip… anyways, I liked whatever it was. 3.5
Weird
First captain beefheart record I’ve listened to. Not what I was expecting, but overall a pretty solid blues album.
I first ‘got’ Tom Waits’ weird period one evening in Uni when I was doing some shopping in town. It was winter, it was raining and I was cold, tired, pissed off and wet. I don’t know what initially possessed me to put on Swordfishtrombones, but I did and it was perfect. The ragged creaky bones of a Jazz band playing nightmare blues stories about down on their luck prostitutes, gamblers, dwarves, and general fuckups fit my mood to a t. I’ve never looked back on my love for Tom Waits. I wasn’t quite as pissed off today when listening to Safe As Milk, and I think that affected how much I enjoyed it. I’ve listened to Trout Mask Replica before, and was expecting something more like that. Trout Mask Replica I can defend as a great work of art. But although there were instances where I thought Safe As Milk came close to the weirdness of Trout Mask Replica, it was mostly fairly typical Blues Rock. Not unpleasant, but not as groundbreaking as his later work. It probably played better in the 60’s but now that the influence has been filtered through it seems less remarkable than something like The Velvet Underground, where the influence runs so deep that it still has stuff to give.
Kinda odd. Kinda dug the first half but lost me in the second half. Very 60s. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Sure ‘Nuff ‘n’ Yes I Do Rating: 3
Rien de magique à mes yeux
Strange and weird, but not really my kind of weird and strange. Always wondered what Beefheart was all about. Still wondering.
Van Vliet's voice is front and center in Beefheart, and enough to freak the blues even without compositional hijinks. Safe As Milk is, in fact, fairly safe as it glosses a few subgenres. Happily off-kilter, neither particularly danceable nor brain-hairy.
I definitely prefer when they're doing the 60s psychedelic thing than their twisted take on Howlin' Wolf. Captain Beefheart is an energetic powerhouse of sorts, but even still, this album manages to lose its steam towards the end. The recording quality is rough too. Sounds like it could use a good remastering. I respect Captain Beefheart and all, he was a weird motherfucker, and he had some shit to work out on these early records that was considered innovative, but which I don't find particularly enjoyable. I much prefer his album "Clear Spot" from '72. On that album he was able to maintain his weirdness, but figured out how to package it in actual grooves. It might not be considered as innovative as this one or "Trout Mask," but man I'd much rather actually listen to it.
Well, I don't hate this album, which is more than I can say for Trout Mask Replica. It feels a lot more like he's trying to do his thing here, and not trying to show everyone how weird he can be. This album may be less interesting than Trout Mask Replica, but it is definitely a lot easier on the ears 3/5
Inconsistent
Listened to this on the day my son was born, it was an odd listen
3.5
Weird album, but a fun listen
Two Captain Beefhearts. TWO. And in just 2 weeks' time. Well this ain't Mike Trout Mask Replica that's for sure - honestly, this is not terrible. Once you get by his voice a bit it all sorta fits. Maybe my bar was so skewed as I'd only heard the aforementioned album and his complimentary work with Zappa that I wasn't expecting a relatively straightforward ("relatively" - it's not straightforward at all, just compared to his other work) bluesy-rootsy+psychedelic 60s album. At the same time, it's not really in my wheelhouse but might be a mood album, setting a definite time and place. Good to hear it and I gave it a few spins today but won't make a permanent rotation. 5/10 3 stars
Rock un tanto psicodélico, con toques country. Se puede escuchar como algo diferente, pero no aporta nada.
There were some really intriguing songs on here, and some very standard and boring blues rock. The good songs though seem to have been ahead of their time. Would listen again for sure!
What the hell did I just listen to? I can't tell if this is parody or a serious attempt at music. When the vocals aren't being super weird, the music is pretty decent.
Ok
Trout Mask Replica was a unique fun experience. This one is a bit like the opposite. It's like Mothers of Invention where it's a fun, silly twist on traditional blues and rock. The song structures are disappointingly simple, with songs being based on some gimmick and just repeating it, maybe throwing in a surprise or two. The most intelligent parts tend to be the jam improvisations. Second side is mostly forgettable. Production quality is dog shit. Sounds gross and hardly anything is audible. There's innovation on here, signs of sucking up for commercial reasons, and plain laziness looking to fill up even a half hour. I liked quite a bit of it, but it could all be dramatically improved. Favorties: Zig Zag Wanderer, Electricity, Abba Zaba
It's funny that this band is known for their weird, grating, experimental album that most people ironically talk about instead of this totally normal and functional blues rock debut. Autumn child was good and while it might not be as interesting as trout mask replica it's sure as hell easier to listen to.
Cult following, eh OK
Not bad, not great. Definitely influential.
I vaguely know the name captain beefheart and for some reason I thought they were meant to be completely crazy and strange, maybe their later albums are weirder? This was definitely odd in places, particularly the singing, but largely it was bluesy pop rock not too dissimilar to other bands at the time. Kept my interest a bit more than similar bands but wouldn't particularly recommend this album, 2.5
Sort of generic and sort of different. Wouldn't listen again, but glad I did. Autumn's Child was my favourite track, and I rather enjoyed some of the instrumental tracks at the end.
Glad this came up, been wanting to give captain beefheart a go for ages. Had a mate at uni who used to go on about him all the time This was good mostly. Very bluesy. Some tracks got a bit weird, which I think is characteristic of him. Not too weird though! Thought the first half was better than the latter. 3.5
Kinda cool I guess
The bold Captain Beefheart... trout mask man wrote a real album. And it's actually kinda fun. I went in blind aside from knowing and listening to trout mask and I love the dudes voice. This album is filled with blues rock and drive. Some of the middle tracks were okay but it started strong for sure.
I liked this but it wasn’t really memorable enough to get 4 stars
nice one
Mixed bag. Some good, some fine, some too weird. Clearly very experimental and influential though.
When I saw Captain Beefheart, I got a little worried. This is the guy who created Trout Mask Replica after all. So I was prepared for something really out there. But this wasn't like that at all. This is mostly just a slightly above average psych rock album. I will clarify that this album is still definitely weird. There are plenty of strange, and even mildly unnerving, moments on this, where you can only wonder what kind of mental state he was in to create something like this. Beefheart also has a really interesting voice. Again, it's weird, but it fits the sound. The one song I can really praise is I'm Glad. This feels like the song where the other band members play their parts the best, especially the backing vocals. It is just a very simple and lighthearted love song that I really enjoy. Rating: 6/10

Blues, un peu mélangé. Quand jai vu Ry Cooder je m'attendais a autre chose. Les arrangements et chansons sont bonnes et c'est différents mais ce n'est pas top tier comme je mA'ttendais. 3.25
I like their more experimental stuff like Trout Mask more, but this is still really fun 60s music. Beefheart's voice is fantastic.
Having Trout Mask Replica as my only reference for Captain Beefheart albums, this debut was completely underwhelming from the get-go. After adjusting to this new level of accessibility, I started appreciating the, still experimental, mix of blues and acid rock. The record peaks at 'Electricity' and 'Yellow Brick Road' and then never really lives up to those two tracks on the final songs. Toss in a less than stellar production, and my overall impression of the album ends where it began: underwhelmed.
There are signs of the madness that was to come on “Electricity”, but it’s still hard to fathom that there’s only two years between this and the insanity that is Trout Mask Replica. Also it seems that there is no proper way of getting into Captain Beefheart. Start at Safe As Milk? Trout Mask Replica will eat you alive. Start with Trout Mask Replica? Everything else will seem sane and borderline boring in comparison.
It seems like there are 3 different flavors here... the more straightahead blues rock showcased by Sure Nuff and Zig Zag Wandered. I find these the most successful, and the more Beefheart starts experimenting (Dropout Boogie, Electricity, Abba Zaba), its comes off as a bit weird. The third flavor is psychedelia... I thought i was listening to Piper at the Gates of Dawn when Autumn's Child spun up. Interesting.
Not a bad listen. First song, Sure 'Nuff 'n' Yes, I Do, I really liked, the back half of the album didn't hold up as well I thought. A 2.5 for me.
due to being young i hold a prejudice against the sound of some 60s albums being very swallowed up, but this does a good job of pushing past that regardless and sounding pretty good. though i mostly only like half of the album, namely "dropout boogie", "i'm glad", and "autumn's child".
Blues-rock. Ni fu ni fa.
Started promisingly, but soon went way out there.
3/5. About as safe as can be. Yes, it’s a little weird and silly, but not crazy. It’s a blues-rock album at the end of the day with its jams and some psychedelic themes. There are some catchy songs but mostly just experimental.
Not a bad blues album, enjoyed the listen and might listen again
Blues. Un poquito raro
It's was ok, some interesting and unique tracks
I did not know what I was in for with this album bit strangely enjoyed it. It is a bit country crossed with 60/70s rock which I quite liked. Fairly upbeat and alternative but not bad by any stretch. Definitely not aomething I would have listened to myself but I didn't mind it
Beefy is always suitably weird
Super raw but it’s also super fun and catchy in an odd way.
Decent prog rock album but nothing that stands out in any particular way
Vocals were super strange but I was digging the music. This album has the kind of experimental music that is weird but still palatable to listen to
This was a weird one but in a good way I think. I'm still not sure exactly what I listened to but I didn't hate it. I won't come back to it but I'm glad I heard it.
I would have never guessed in a million years this was a band full of white guys. This gives psychedelic blues rock which I found super interesting.
Milking it.
safe indeed
So this is Captain Beefheart… it’s decent, I think? Not sure why he has such a cult following, but I can see the appeal of his slightly manic, unpredictable energy, especially when combined with accessible tunes. I mean, to my 21st century ears it sounds gently eccentric rather than wildly inventive, but it’s probably fair to assume that some of the weirder tracks would’ve been a bit ‘out there’ in 1967.
I enjoyed this WAY more than the Trout one he did two years later. Experimental and plain kooky in parts, but there's enough on here to find some enjoyable country-blues-psychedelic rock that is enjoyable.
bruh. hate this fcking website. deleted my whole ass review, anyways to sum it all up it went. "i love his vocals, the guitar makes me wet." thats about it. end.
This is why you need to listen to the whole album, folks. This one kicked off strong but then started to go sideways by song 4. It seems like someone tried to course correct on song 5 but it wasn't enough and the whole thing just unraveled into a weird mess by the end. When it was good, it was really quite good. But when it wasn't, it really wasn't.
Speciaal soort bluesrock met een psychedelisch toetsje. Niet onmiddellijk iets wat ik opnieuw zou opleggen, maar het was wel oké
5/10. Sound quality not spectacular, reminded me a lot of Zappa
Started out surprisingly fine but got on my nerves quickly. 5/10
not bad
I didn't have the foggiest notion what to expect from the album, and the first track had be quite intrigued with the blues jam. The rest of the album was hit and miss for me though. I am glad to have listened multiple times today, but as an album, I don't think that this one makes my list.
first 30 minutes are just ok. I couldn't pick out something I liked on the bonus tracks because they do too much on them. no theme, just jamming. too much jamming. electricity
Not quite sure about this. I've always seen them as a kinda joke band. I guess they're a particular flavour but one I don't relish. It's not bad but unspectacular.
Was good background music, but nothing really stood out to me.
A surprisingly accessible Beefheart effort with some fun takes on Delta Blues meets early rock. Does run a bit long, but probably would’ve checked out earlier if the tracks weren’t as interesting or unique.
Good but patchy, with a bunch of bonus that add nothing.
Decent without being spectacular
I expected to either hate or love this album, but it was pretty down the middle for me. A few things I disliked, quite a few a like, but a lot of it didn't catch my attention. I wonder what I'll think of the other album on here. My favourite song was I'm Glad.
Captain Beefheart is completely new to me. I can picture dropping acid in the 60's and hearing this album and having my mind blown. It pulls from different styles while also being a bit off the wall and avant-garde. I can hear how they are influential. Some of the songs I wasn't as into. I really liked Dropout Boogie. It makes me picture a bunch of Muppets singing it. Electricity is so weird, but I find myself enjoying it. Yellow Brick Road is catchy, in a fun way. Some of the songs are a little too much for me, but I get the appeal.
Neat blues record with some really cool riffs. Definitely prefer the mono recording but can definitely see myself coming back to a few songs.
Score: 70 Album art: 50 Prototype primus I was going to right this off as another boring early rock album but it actually does a lot of interesting stuff. Lots of different genres of rock and different singing styles. One of the singers sounds like he's already dead. I ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would.
A little less full formed in its wierdness as compared to Trout Mask Replica. No objection to this jazzbo blues rollicking but it doesn't feel essential.
Léon Thereminin soitinta soittavi. Aika kiva, erilainen 60-luvun blues albumi.
Good vibes, I would listen to this again!
Blues-rock. Ni fu ni fa.
Finally a band from the 60’s that didn’t sound like a bunch of common cunt crooners I liked the folk and blues sounds, felt like we were trotting along Some really weird and fun stuff happening here Favourite tracks: Abba Zaba and Plastic Factory 3.5/5 - rounded down
This album was... weird. As you may have guessed from the band name and the album title. The first song, I was thinking it seemed more like ZZ Top than the Frank Zappa-sounding stuff I was imaging would be on here. But after that it got psychedelic and strange. I want to listen to this more to figure it out. I think I like it, but I was listening to it while watching work training and figuring out how to use Teams and the vibes were just too different for me to fully appreciate.
Clangy guitar and peculiar lyrics and vibe. It's just all a bit weird, but in line with the time. 3.5 for me
Enjoyed that, far better than I expected it to be.
3... TOO REPETITIVE
Great bluesy growl. Reasonable blues rock that fits with the mid ‘60s era. Glad it wasn’t the extremely difficult Trout Mask today🙉!
p104. 1967. 3.5 stars. 60s psychedelic blues/rock smorgasborg. Great vocals. Ry Cooder on top form. Still sounds great now. All that is missing are some standout tunes. Points deducted for filler and outstaying its welcome - nobody needs an album with several tracks >6 mins.
Some good psychedelic blues mixed with some strange stuff. Not bad but I don’t think I’ll listen again.
Very strange and very 60s. At times it sounded Like a psychedelic Howlin Wolf but also sounds like early Dead on the blues songs.
Random in places, but enjoyable nonetheless. It's a 3.5 for me, if half marks were allowed!
Album is interesting. Not something i'd listen to normally but i don't hate it.
Safe to say.. trea borde lyssna åter i guess
Very weird album but judging by the artist's name and album title this comes as no surprise. Despite its oddities, I am enjoying this album so far. While it's a very interesting and unique sound and I'm happy having experienced it once, I don't think this is something I'd listen to again.
Som das antiga, legalzinho mas não muito meu estilo
Precies gek genoeg dat het leuk blijft!
Largely cathartic for me. As you know I dated Shelley Beefheart for 4 years and she made me cum a lot. Captain Beefheart was always a bit of a prick to me because I was fisting his sister.
Interesting
I hadn't listened to this before. It sounds like Beefheart, but with the rough edges filed off. It gives you an idea that without the madness, he'd be a good bluesman. But the weirdness is so much more fun.
More listenable than I was expecting based upon prior Cpt Beefheart experience.
Captain Beefheart is an artist that has been on my list for trying to get into. I've tried to listen to Troutmask Replica a few times, with little success. It is the musical equivalent of Joyce's Ulysses; lauded by some, but impenetrable and difficult. Maybe starting with Troutmask is jumping into the deep end too soon, so I was glad to see this come up on the list. I wanted to give the Captain a real chance with a more approachable record. So, sitting down to really listen (and I listened through three times), this album I really liked. It sounds like some of the edgier rock of 1967 (Zappa, Velvets), but more firmly rooted in the blues. The Captain's vocals are surreal and gruff (obviously influence on later Tom Waits), but not so far out into left field as to be incomprehensible. MVP is Ry Cooder, whose playing is superb, and you can tell the songs that he did the arrangements for. Standout tracks: Sure Nuff 'n Yes I Do, Dropout Boogie, Electricity, Plastic Factory and the cover of Grown So Ugly. Enjoyed, would listen again, and feeling better prepared for Troutmask when it turns up on the list.
I hate country
Pretty good
Reminds me a lot of Love, or Mothers Of Invention, but I like both of those bands' sound more. "Where There's Woman" was the only song I ended up saving.
Buen album
Weird, bluesy and a bit psychedelic. Nice one
Its pretty experimental, though not too wild - I guess thats his charm. However, some misses on here too.
Had to dig up a mono release because the stereo mixing was way too aggressive for headphones, but overall pretty fun weird folky mishmash thing
Call on Me is a fun time. So is Yellow Brick Road - very much enjoying the rhyming in that one. Whatever they're doing to their guitars in Dirty Blue Gene is pretty funky and fairly interesting. Love the band name.
Delightfully weird. I love the blues but its probably not this i would be putting on if i want to listen to blues, still good tho
This album was pretty decent. Had a bunch of different styles played throughout. Overall I felt it to have strong blues vibes while still having a classic prick sound. Overall not really any song in particular stood out but for this album coming out in the 60s it felt ahead of its time. 6.3/10
Not into this
Good
I'm Glad, Zig Zag Wanderer and Sure 'Nuff 'n' Yes, I do are standouts on this album
art-blues? zappa like sounds on some songs but very bluesy
This was interesting, kind of a bluesey experimental album. I'm guessing that Captain Beefheart enjoyed his share of drugs during the making of this. The (7!) bonus tracks made the album way too long.
Great debut record. Mixes genres (psychedelic rock, garage rock, doo-wop, r&b, etc.). Pretty accessible for a Captain Beefheart record, but is just enough “out there” to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Not my favorite
Weird but accessible? I liked it I think?
It's fine. Vanilla Zappa, but it's a relatively decent listen.
Normally I like late 60's experimental/psychedelic/garage music, but this didn't do much for me. It was probably pretty cool when it first came out but it hasn't aged well. Didn't hate it, but didn't enjoy it much either. 3 stars.
After trout mask replica this one had me scared, but it was surprisingly good!
This was good... just show me the next band though.
Liked it more than I thought I would. Some pretty interesting stuff in this album
3.5/5
Eclectic, inventive and quite interesting
Echt te oude poprock. Klinkt als beatles/kinks maar dan wat minder poppy en bij vlagen beetje raar/experimenteel. 3*
More accessible than I thought it was gonna be, especially in terms of the instrumentals (which I really enjoyed!), but gets a little weird around half way through. Some of the vocals became a bit grating after a while.
It is a decent album with some interesting aspects to it and good bass. But overall I don't think it is all too special. "I'm Glad" is probably the track that I like the most, but the one that feels like it belongs on the album the least.
I got to learn where the Black Keys heard some of their initial cover songs from. The music was interesting with lots of range and good to have in the background.
I was expecting some noisy, annoying shit from Captain Beefheart. My college roommate was into him and I hated that shit. Fortunately, CBH hadn’t yet hit his disdainful stride for this debut album and it’s very listenable. I actually like it and I would gladly listen to this album again. CBH shows his eccentricities in his varied song styles: delta blues, soul, and psychedelic rock. The weirdness is there just not fully formed yet…thankfully.
In it's core the album is a (country) blues rock album with somethimes some songs with soul influences. But what's up with the troatsinging!? Some song are pretty... experimental to say the least. It has some ups and downs in de amount of experimental sound. Also worth noting that the album has some nice instrumental songs at the end of the album. Overall opinion: It's a decent album, nice to have listened a few times but I won't look it up again any time soon.
Well . . . I'm glad that's over. I'm gonna wash out my ears with some Howlin' Wolf. There were some moments of pure brilliance though. The horns on I'm Glad were fantastic.
Kicked off with some really filthy delta blues. I was thinking this was a sure 4, maybe 5. But for all the songs that totally killed it there were others that just devolved into BS late 60s psychedelia and more avant garde stuff. Not that there isn't a place for that. But it make me love the album as much as I thought I would.
I’ve only ever heard the lore of Captain Beefheart, but never an album by him, so I was surprised when the first couple of songs were decent. But then it was like, ohhhhh, yeah, there it is. Rough.
Interesting, whole new flavor of the blues for sure. The album starts off really good, ebjoyed the first few tracks quite a bit, then it took a turn about a third of the way through and spiraled out of control from there. Crazy stuff but I must say the ride was okay, bit rough, but Beefheart kept me interested most of the album. However, the lows on the album are absolutely terrible. There are songs on here that are complete nonsense, just pointless and ridiculous. He must have blown people's minds in 1967, I'll give him that.
suspect i am going to hate this :) Not as mad as i thought but not my thing
Wednesday, 24 June, 2026 Side 1 was good. Side 2 lost me a bit. He has an interesting voice. The recording and mix was a bit strange. It’s all very interesting. 1967 must have been quite a year.
A few bright spots but overall not very captivating.
Bijzonder saaie bluesrock, ga ns weg.
I'm not a fan of old bluesy stuff like this.
Dear god is this obnoxious. And this ain’t even Trout Mask Replica.
Didn't like this, I get that it's somewhat experimental but I can't vibe with this. There's not a point in the album where I feel connected woth this album at all. That being said, it is not awful there is parts to it which work more than others but it doesn't mesh overall. I won't listen to this again, sorry to the big fans of this. Fav Track: Electricity
לדאבוני לא כזה אהבתי
I like what they attempt to do but not how they do it.
I have a mate who loves these guys. Don’t get it personally
Keiuna Hnung was das ist, irgendwelcher Sound der nicht einzuordnen ist
I can hear the influence
Maybe I'm just grumpy today and not in the mood for these shenanigans but this just didn't hit.
Best Song: Abba Zaba. Despite myself, I kind of liked the nonsense lyrics here. Worst Song: Electricity. Who wants to hear this pack-a-day smoker wheeze out "electricity" for three minutes? Overall: The kind of experimentalism that I don't like. "Look how goofy and drug-addled we are". Great. Do something interesting with it. Not just a 70 minute slog of slightly silly dad rock.
Yeah it was alright, it’s VERY 60’s. instrumentals are great but i don’t really care for beefhearts vocals. I’m gonna drop it below the decent ranking of 3 stars because theres very few tracks of this hour long list that i actually care for. Standouts are zigzag wanderer, i’m glad and dirty blue gene.
Meh.
Boy, this album started so promising... but turns out to be an exercise in disappointment. The opening track is a straight ahead blues tune with some cool slide guitar. I thought sure, I'm on board with this. The following tracks were good in a similar manner. The song Electricity is nice, featuring some Moog synthesizer -- I have to imagine this is some of the first use of it in pop music. But in the same song the singer starts using this whooping vocalization that makes the song virtually unlistenable. The rest of the album falls into endless repetition. There are some instrumental jams on the back half that I would normally be down with, but they aren't very imaginative and aren't played with any particular skill. This is such a contrast with Birth of the Cool yesterday in which improvisation is used, but is thoughtful and features impeccable playing skill. The opening third would be a high 3 even pushing 4. But the back end of this really sounds like they were just padding the decent material with filler to complete an album length release. It's really too bad.
pretty rough, prog rubbish
Deeply weird - but I don't hate it.
It’s fine, but I can’t imagine I’ll think to listen to it again.
There were parts of this that were legitimately funny to listen to, but musically it was just alright. It was like listening to early Pink Floyd or the Doors but not good. Also what does safe as milk even mean.
Zzz
More crass imitation of black American blues. Nothing special.
This album started out in the hole because I hate Trout Mask Replica so much. The guy’s stupid Wolfman Jack voice also didn’t do it any favors. Wikipedia says he sings in five octaves or whatever but I don’t know what an octave is and I think his voice sucks. All that being said, this was pretty inoffensive blues rock, so I didn’t hate it too much. But still, fuck Captain Beefheart.
This was weird.
Kinda cool, quite forgettable.
No. 162 I don't understand what it means to be safe as milk. I don't understand a lot of things about this album.
Is it typical 60s rock band? Is it a folk album? Is it a blues / soul album? Is it country? I'm not too sure. this album is all over the place in its consistency. it's not fun to listen to. The individual songs are decent, but it just feels like 19 songs randomly picked to be put onto an LP.
I genuinely don’t know where to start with this album. It’s kind of a hodge podge of genres and styles; some better, some worse. Clearly talented, but I’d say I enjoyed maybe half the songs and didn’t really engage with the other half.
Maso
it would seem than an avant-garde bluesy rock album should sound interesting but damn it's just boring.
Very gravely, mix between twangy and metal - odd. I didn't hate it but it wasn't great.
Eh
Strong start then lost interest
Listened while in the car, so I was not givingthe music my full attention. What I heard was variable, a strong start which petered out. John Peel was a huge fan while at his most influential. But not really for me.
There were some quite annoying sequences that got repeated over and over for a long period of time. That definitely sullied my opinion some. This isn't my style. When the instrumentals got interesting, the vocals were annoying. So it just kinda missed for me.
Not sure I could think of a worse name for a band
Not super impressed with this one, I started at three stars but became less interested the more I listened to it. It’s fine I guess, 2 stars (barely)
Weird 70’s vibe
1.5
Encore du rock des années 70 un peu granuleux un peu unky... "I'm Glad" est sympathique mais le reste on s'ENNUIE.
I have nothing to say. I listened. It was unremarkable.
Wow this is… not good. Weird =/= good
Idk man it reeeeeally dragged on and it is so all over the place. The songs are short so sometimes by the time I registered that it’s a new song and got the hang of it, the song ends and another song plays.
Love the names, but too long and didn’t care much for the end
This was funky, ranging from unpleasant listening to interesting and cool. Given that it came out in 1967, I can see how it would have been revolutionary and led the way towards how modern music sounds. However, I wouldn’t choose to listen again.
Hmm. Not sure at all
nah
Weird and strange but also fun at points. Won’t be returning to listen again likely but I’m not so off put by this.
Not for me. Bit too experimental for my taste. Dropout Boogie lived up to its name and did like another couple of songs but I can’t see myself returning to this one
The Grateful Dead’s worst album, which is not on this list, is better than this slop. MI6, you win again.
I thought Zig Zag Wanderer and Yellow Brick Road were fun, although not sure they were actually good. Instrumentals at the back-end we're awful.
Too much beef, not enough heart.
Delta blues prison boyfriend vibes. Similar to other rock faves; doors, stones, dire straights… but weird and unhinged
Some of the vocals really pissed me off
Weird, wacky, but doesn’t quite click with me. Possibly the best band name of all time though
I don’t really know what to say… Sounds like typical 60-s band. Good songs… Unfortunately, I never listen to lyrics and I don’t recognize most of it.
This was surprisingly very average. I was expecting a little more.
Low grade 60s British album. Not worth listening to really
Heard worse but it does not really stick and his vocie get pretty annoying at times. "i'm glad" was pretty decent so it's a good addition to "1001 decent albums that you might want to listen to before you die".
Like a fever dream. Favourite track: I'm Glad
It's alright. It's pretty standard 60's psychedelicish music to me. Maybe there is some history I'm missing. I'd never even heard of them until I got to the list. So I'm betting they are someone's favorite band. It's alright. Nothing that made me want to listen to more of them.
Not my cup of tea
I would have said mercifully short if it didn't feel like 3 hours long instead of 33 minutes. Music not bad, but come on. Probably an acquired taste.
get me out of here
Well, a step up from Trout Mask Replica, actually can listen to it
204/1089 Having heard about the reputation of Trout Mask Replica, I was a bit disappointed that this album was so normal. It’s a fine 60s boyband pop album but doesn’t particularly interest or excite memaybe i need to return to this in the future knowing what to expect 24/100
Weird. Very 60’s. Didn’t like the singer’s voice.
I respect the weirdness of this, but I just... didn't like the sound. Bluesy rock doesn't click for me. So this is a 2 for my taste, but they do seem like an interesting band.
Yet to reach its fullest potential
Sometimes okay to listen to, sometimes a little irritating.
A good band that hired the local beggar of the neighborhood to do the vocals.
Weird. But I listened to the whole thing. I was never into Captain Beefheart - thought he was a Frank Zappa wanna be, and never came close. This did get better near the end of the album, but I'm not going to go back and try to find 'the good stuff'.
This was not my cup of tea. Kind of hard to describe. I didn't really like the old tiney shouty bluesness of it all
na
Just okay not really for me. 4.1/10
Já tinha ouvido falar do captain Beefheart por conta de Frank zappa. O álbum é diferente, bem experimental.
Pleasant and goofy at its best - some funny vocal deliveries are probably the highlight. For as large as the Trout Mask Replica legend looms large (still haven’t had that one yet), this is pretty normative. I don’t know, I think there are better, more impactful listening experiences if you really want a late 60’s psych rock record. Of which there are aplenty on this list
This was a weird listen. Interesting but disjointed. Not for me
Some shit Drew would like
This was a strange album. I might have to come back to it cuz I really didn’t know what I was expecting.
Favorite songs: I'm Glad, Abba Zaba
2.5
Another questionable inclusion. Fave track: Call On Me
Somebody get me a horse and a real cowboy.
Interesting music from the 60's. Some cool riffs. Can see how it was influential. A bit too manic for my taste.
Blues to start. I’m not the biggest fan of this right off the bat. Listening to the mono version just because the panning is obnoxious. The rest of the album feels like this too. Very stones-like and the stones aren’t fantastic. They’re passable with a few good songs.
This only gets a 2 because the instrumental tracks weren't bad. The songs with vocals were just obnoxious.
Certifiably strange, but also kind of … intriguing?
i spose i can see why this was crazy to listen to 60 years ago, but it doesn't do anything for me
No thanks
