Reviews (page 12 of 12)
Not great
The production quality of this album is not good-very tinny sound. It sounds like an early Beatles knockoff with the beginnings of some punk added. Too poppy for me
I prefer other works by the Kinks
Not on Spotify
Very 1968! And very British. The Kinks have so many hits, but I do not remember any of these songs. The album was a nice listen, but not sure I will revisit it anytime soon. There are many more Kinks albums to check out!
Meh
Olle Kamellen
All sounds the same
There are some great riffs and harmonies on here, and a good number of excellent songs. But there are also some that are just bad, and they not only leave a foul stain on the album but they are mostly near the end. Truly an album only a Brit could love
Reminded me of the Beatles
Hmm, last track was kinda interesting
Felt like background music
Kinda mid. Nothing really stands out. Very generic 60's album. 2.5/5.
I like The Kinks, but this album was a little boring if I’m being honest.
Alright album, didnt seem to drag but not my favourite.
Some interesting instruments take care of providing an air of decorum. That said, not an album I will be coming back to an awful lot.
Have heard one of these on the Raising Sand album. Was ok.
standouts - do you remember walter just super simple ok music, nothing memorable
I really enjoyed the other Kinks album I received. This one is completely different. Some of the songs were very hard to listen to and I can see why it was an overall commercial flop. I do not like this album.
This sounds more like a Beatles cover band than the Kinks.
Eh. It's fine, I guess.
It’s not really my style
Musically, not my favorite, but will need a few more listens where I really pay attention to the lyrics.
Yellow submarine extended.
Reading about The Kinks trajectory of being blackmailed from touring in the US in the early part of the British Invasion and subsequently leaning into being more specifically English because they had lost their international audience was kind of an interesting story. But this album is the outcome of that and I did not like it.
gun to my head i would have told you picture book was a beatles song. i think i was mixing it up with paperback writer
Ordinary pop rock. 2 stars.
Hippy Rock. Not my thing anymore. But not bad I guess?
Not my sound at all - like The a Beatles but with sarcastic lyrics?
Quirky. Couple of classics in there Days, VGPS but the rest started to feel after a while that they were trying too hard to be weird. Got to being hard work to listen to.
This was ok. It wasn't what I was expecting from the Kinks.
“Picture book of people with each other, to prove they loved each other, a long time ago” This album is idiotic bullshit. Sorry. Listens: 1 1/2 Fave Track: I thought they were all stupid. Rating: 2
Folksy Beatles esq sounding
Apparently there are two versions of The Kinks. This is the version that I was unfamiliar with, and feel more like a kid's band.
Easy listening, would probably have to listen again to give accurate rating.
The Beatles all over again
Sitting by the riverside almost gave me a headache with its accordion Aggressively 60’s pop
I certainly understand the influence this album had on bands, like The Who, and the Beatles, and the Beach boys, and all of the other solid bands of this era. But for me, this isnt an album that I wouldn’t listen to again in almost any circumstance. Very few stand out songs in my opinion. All that said, I do respect the artistry of the Kinks especially compared to their Brit Rock counterparts… Highlights: Last of the steam powered trains, Wicked Annabella
Same shit band as before only know this album because of hot fuzz.
Just ok
Happy go lucky album. Seems like it would be hard to be upset while listening to this one. Doesn’t mean I want to relisten to it though necessarily.
The Village Green Preservation society - 2/5 Do you remember walter - 2/5 Picture book - 2/5 Johnny thunder - 1/5 Last of the steam powered trains - 3/5 big sky -2/5 sitting by the riverside - 2/5 Animal farm - 3/5 Village green - 1/5 Starstruck - 3.5/5 Phenomenal cat - 1/5 All of my friends were there - 0/5 Wicked annabella - 3/5 Monica - 1/5 People take pictures of each other - 2/5 Overall - Not a fan, way too 50s type pop for me
It was ok.
Okay
Maybe worth 3 stars but I don’t want to accidentally listen to it again.
Eh; there are more interesting work this time period for me. I’d I could do 2.5 I would so a 2 cause I can’t coming back to this lol
This was moderately enjoyable.
viihdytyksen mukaan narriarvo näkyy arviossa päällimmäisenä.. eli 3 star.. Harmi että kinks.. eli -1 star..
60's Brit pop is one of the few genres I absolutely hate. Album had some nice moments but overall, still 60's Brit pop.
Pleasant enough but it wears out its welcome as the album goes on. No single track really stood out. Most of them would be welcome on a playlist, but strung together the album started to feel tedious.
not really for me
Its good but its like a ripoff Beatles. In fact when I listened they recommended me George Harrison songs…
really nothing special tbh
Not Kinky enough
It started of a bit boring, but still okay. "Phenomenal cat" and everything after that is just bad.
Found it pretty boring. Nothing really sounded interesting, that caught my attention.
Didn't find it very interesting
OK.
2/5 Best: Last of the Steam-Powered Trains Worst: Monica
Is there a name for this style of music? 60s British rock? Anyways, I don’t think I like it. All sound like knock offs of the Beatles.
Very samey
Very much of the 60s, sounds like something the monkeys would release, not a particularly enjoyable listen
Ray Davies completely loses it on the silly-train toward the end of this otherwise critically acclaimed cult album.
its just okay
The Kinks at their most generic imo. The riffs are nice and their signature baroque charm emerges here and there, but it's pretty dull overall, especially when compared to their other efforts.
What if the Beatles were boring
Maybe I'm not in the right mood for this but it really irritated me. It all feels very forced, and they're trying to take the piss out of something, but I think it's what they're basically saying. Nah. Just got on my tits.
Given the reputation these hairy ding-dongs have, I expected more. Instead we got the Diet Beatles but it's the generic kind and 8 months expired.
I prefer the poppy Kinks. It’s great that they wanted to create a concept album, but I don’t like concept albums and based on the critical reception this album received, neither does anyone else.
C+ The Village Green Preservation Society - 2 Do You Remember Walter? - 3 Picture Book - 3 Johnny Thunder - 2 Last of the Steam-Powered Trains - 2 Big Sky - 4 Sitting by the Riverside - 3 Animal Farm - 3 Village Green - 3 Starstruck - 2 Phenomenal Cat - 2 All of My Friends Were There - 3 Wicked Annabella - 2 Monica - 2 People Take Pictures of Each Other - 2 This is a very strong 2, but it isn't deep enough to earn a 3. I will definitely return to a couple 3's, but it wasn't the most memorable album I've heard. The first time I heard this album was in high school. I was hanging out with this girl who I always had a thing for: tall, attractive, great personality. On top of all that, she was Jewish. For a non-secular Jewish person, such as myself, finding out that a girl is Jewish is like finding out the car you might buy has heated seats. It's a fantastic added bonus, but not the make or break requirement. Whereas for a secular Jew, it'd probably feel more like the engine. Anyways, I was hanging with her one night and she was playing music. Did I mention she had great music taste too? Ya, she was wifey material. She played "Big Sky", which I immediately liked and have listened to since then. So, when this album popped up, I recognized the cover, but had never listened to any other tracks, so I was excited. Honestly, it's quite good. However, 3's are a tough threshold, and this couldn't quite cut it. Just barely though. If it had received a single more grade point, it would have made it a 3. As for the mystery girl, she's a 5 out 5, and I never became more than a friend. Maybe we'll run into each other one day at Whole Foods and catch up on old times. My beard will be fully filled in and I'll dress like a professional writer, cardigan and all. She'll tell me she's gone corporate and shatter all my hopes, dreams, and memories all at once. I'll slo-mo drop my quinoa onto the ground in shock, collapsing and losing all sense of what's going on. As I lay in a pile of quinoa on the cold, hard floor of Whole Foods losing consciousness, Big Sky will eerily play on the store's speakers: my Rosebud.
eh
Not their best, bit long winded
"Fly or die" . Ok let's get urban and possibly deeply ironic, yeah :-) . It ticks a genre box I suppose. I'm curious as to why it's on the list... I drop my bias for a moment... I looked for their most popular track.. "she wants to move".. and reluctantly, I can say , on the 2nd listen, does have a certain catchy and original style, on the 2nd listen. Sometimes you have to give new music some time... As the album cover advertises so well what it is, it's easy to see this as juvenile american boy music with attitude. Mostly not for me, and at first it really defies me to see what it defines, achieves or says. ... I actively disliked much if it. As the review mentions they worked hard to make something that others see... Party Rap rock. I started to hear influences of Nirvana harmonies and heavy 90s rock updated ....with modern bit band overtones - moments of Timberlake without the vocal gifts. So that's how I got to 3 stars instead of 1. Bruv slates, andLive long and prosper, fellas. (But I am not sure you broke the metaphorical shell of our understanding of brash American culture).
Yet another white boy rock critic cult classic... an overlooked gem of 1960s chamber pop, just like soooo many others we have reviewed as part of 1001 albums. I mean, it's pleasant enough (by design). This marks the point at which Ray Davies had successfully torpedoed his career by fighting with seemingly everyone who might be able to help him, and the Kinks transition from pop-hitmakers to cult favourites (i.e., commercial irrelevancy). I have long liked the title track (never released as a single in the UK!) and The Last of the Steam-Powered Trains is a rollicking English take on Smokestack Lightning. But I have no great nostalgia for the Britain of years past, so it's a bit of a non-committal shrug from me. The 1968 NME considered the album "too twee" even then, and I tend to agree. 2.5 stars, rounding down.
I liked the start, got a little weird at the end.
I'm glad I listened to this but I didn't really like it. The sort of pseudo-medieval lute-playing bard gimmick never really landed with me and I don't really understand that vibe though it seemed pretty prevalent for a while in the 60's Picture Book wasn't bad but I think I'd skip the rest of this record.
Not for me, can see its importance but its just a bit too 60's english for me.
One or two alright tracks does not make an album
Clever lyrics and some interesting themes. This requires your full attention. I was unable to give it this today. I kinda get the nostalgia fest. It probably made more sense in 1968 than 2023. I don't want to go back to a bland world of black and white and shitty suburbia.
OK-ish. Sounded like they were trying too hard trying to make a point, failed in the process and the album suffered as a result. 2.5 stars.
Quite boring and very corny... liked village green though
Listened Before? N I'll confess that I think these guys were very talented in what they did... but man, did everything in the 60s in England sound like the Beatles. Jeebus. I've had enough and I'm not even halfway done with the list. All good, but not for me really. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Picture Book
People trying to recreate Sgt. Pepper’s but ending up overdoing it with the drugs.
I enjoy the Kinks sound be didn't find anything too interesting on this one.
Meh
I am waiting for the great Kinks albums. Are there any. 3 done and no sign yet.
This wasn't bad overall though some songs are quite bad; I recognized one song in "Picture Book". The overall thing is just pretty dated and didn't find many of the songs to be appealing. 5/10.
pretty soulless generic noise. didn't do anything interesting, didn't sound distinct from the times. 2.
I was really expecting something more exciting. It felt like all filler tracks to me.
This is like a classic 60s album: some rock elements but mainly folksy, right and left ear instruments, poor mixing, and singing that's slightly out of tune but only noticeable when it's one guy singing it. The lyrics are basically nonsense, and also the voice changer in one of the songs sounds like crazy frog. Mainly this sounds like worse talking heads. Favorite track: Sitting by the Riverside
You can call me nuts, but I much prefer Muswell Hillbillies to this album. Another just kind of mid album on this list. Highlight: 9.
This wasn't that bad all things considered. Bored to death of late 60s nonsense though. 2/5.
Well, I now better understand where Traffic's "John Barleycorn Must Die" (1970) came from. You lost me with the Harpsichord.
tek guzel sarki village greendi
This is extremely 60s in the worst way possible to me
Un poco aburrido.
not my groove
ThIs is Oompa Loompa music
this is terrible. Just boring white boys singing boring white music. 2 stars if I'm honest because its decent elevator music, but man doesn't male privilege make me want to rate this "1".
Pretty good but wouldn’t listen again
Yay another piece of slightly dull 60s folk rock
Pretty meh album, it wasn't bad and it was nice at some parts but it was mostly boring to me. Album cover: 3/5 group photo but at least there's something going on
Not bad. Not really my style but enjoyable
Ok
Not really my style of music
3/10 this band sucks
Sounds like some beatles era rock and roll and nothing else besides that
I like that one tune.
Mellow easy to listen to but not very exiting
Not immediately interested. Will revisit.
twee
Not bad - a bit too whimsical and consistently similar for my taste
mid
I listened to this record this morning and - no joke - completely and utterly forgot that I had until about 5 mins ago. (It’s 8pm. I’m not drinking.) So, uhh, yeah. Hey are there Kinks songs I need to know that weren’t covered by Van Halen and aren’t in a Wes Anderson movie? I wanna hear those. Pretty sure they weren’t on this album.
Sunday afternoon is a solid tune, but come on Kinks, you’re better than this.
A totally unremarkable album. I was bored throughout and I was glad it was over. I did not skip any songs, so that is a plus.
If you need some stereotypical 60’s rock - it is here. 2.1
Fouth "The Kinks" that I get on this list and it's the worst one. I don't even know why, but it does not have any remarkable song. It's not all bad, but the other albums from the band on this list are much better.
Didn’t care too much for this album. Never felt like it really made strides to differentiate itself. The album wasn’t necessarily bad just seemed like generic British pop rock. 4.6/10
i like the kinks but this isn't a very good one. its basically the title track and picture book and then a load of crap. can't go messing around with my carefully coordinated system because i like a band.
J’aurais préférer écouter l’album « the Kinks ».
This one is tough to rate. There was nothing particularly awful, but I can't say that I enjoyed listening to it. A lot of music from the 60s seems a bit "all over the place" to me, and this album fits that description perfectly.
I like the Kinks, but this album seems like a weird "dark ages" thing that happened between the cool punky stuff of the early-mid 60s (like You Really Got Me and All Day) and the less-cool-but-still-cool stuff that came later (like Lola). Maybe they were searching for something here? Maybe they were just trying to make more radio-friendly stuff? I'm not sure, but it left much to be desired.
Above as interesting as the skink in my garden. Pretty bland
Cool vibe but one dimensional
Another one of the 60th bands that seem to have released 50 or so LPs? Man what a waste of time. You would have thought they may get better over time. I give it 2 Stars but only because of the song "Do you remember Walter" Obviously it must be about me.
Not a fan but wasn’t bad. Honestly felt like a strictly worse version of their contemporaries.
Mjög unremarkable.
This feels like something I'd listen to while surrounded by a withering mass of bodies all connected in one way or the other. And then after all the acid wears off and I'm stuck alone, nude in a room full of people. I wonder how my family is doing. I haven't called them in months, maybe longer? Who knows. This is fucking 60s cult music
did not care for this one. for me its very generic late 60s British rock
The title track is extremely catchy. The rest slips a bit.
OK
I liked this album better than face to face. My biggest issue with the Kinks is that I just don't care much for the vocalist. I would probably rate this a 2.5 if I had the option.
Not my cup of (English) Tea
Meh, boring mostly
Prefer The Beatles :P Not many tracks left an impact, so can't score the album highly I liked the Village Green and Wicked Annabella
Quirky and fun. Liked the vibe of the album throughout. Bit samey after a while but overall an enjoyable listen if not just in the background
Reminds me of sgt peppers for some reason but not quite as good. Overall though it was ok.
2.5 - first track is a banger, rest are ok/chil
meh
Snore
Was ok
Blij dat het gedaan was.
A groovy - 2.8✌ Unfortunately this was the wrong Kinks album, where was "You really got me" ..
Blah
Okay I suppose.
5.5
A little too beatle-ish, but I like it.
Nothing clever here
Gib mir was, du musst mir was anbieten. It's 2* again... Warum muss alte Musik immer so langweilig sein....
Don't know at all The Kinks... Top track: People Take Pictures Of Each Other
Meh
Fav Song: Last of the Steam-Powered Trains
the album was good quality, just not sure why this particular kinks album. It was long.
This was pretty rough to get through. A very, very discount Beatles IMO. Sucked.
Perhaps it's just not the day for me to listen to the same old same old shit cuz this also a 2 lol... just standard stuff idk what to tell u
60s innit
Not really my sort of music but it did generate some foot tapping. I'm becoming to appreciate that my enjoyment of music is influenced by my mood. It is Friday today. So close to a 3 but I will probably never choose to listen to this again. Rating 2.8/5
Meh
1968: Picture Book, Do You Remember Walter?
The dissapointment of white cis men music can go throught all the genres.
Felt very boring and just repetitive the album just felt difficult to listen too they sing in the same mundane voice every single song and the instruments additionally sound exactly the same.
Every song sounds almost the same, and the album as a whole is pretty boring. Definitely of its time.
Captures several of the things I hate all at one: nostalgia, the sixties sound, parochial anti modernism.
This is the same band that wrote "You Really Got Me" ? I'll pass, thanks. Too cute for me - I'm not really interested in full album's worth of nostalgia for an English village.
No thanks, this sounds like the a bad Beatles tribute band. Much rather hear, "You Really Got Me" or "Come Dancing" really almost any other Kinks music than this.
Jag giller verkligen The Kinks jättemycket, men 3-4 år tidigare "All of the day...", “You really got me“, "Dedicated follower of fashion" och den prylen, då är man minst lika bra som The Beatles.
Dessutom uselt trams.
favs: last of the steam powered trains sitting by the riverside rating 0.5/5
Not good. I really dont like thr kinks
After hearing the first few seconds, I already felt like I wouldn't be the biggest fan. Boring melodies and instrumentals, feels like if the Beatles never evolved from their first album. Had to fight not to fall asleep most of the time and could not wait for it to be over. I'm sorry, but this has no right being close to the top 1000 albums of all time.
Not my vibe
i really liked lyrics but not the music itself they sound like the beatles and bob dylan collaborated
Little country not for me
Meh
Kinda kinky 😛😛😛 most of the songs for me sounded pretty damn similar idk
Ay no que horrible esto.
Interessante
Very dates sound - not a favorite
dnf
This might be the worst album we have encountered in our journey, hidden beneath the umbrella of a ‘concept’ and the melodic hooks of 1960s pop. “Oh, how innovative,” say the critics. But, this is really just a banal collection of utterly forgettable songs. How the hell did this come out in the same month as Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland?
Ok
2/10 - too hippy for me, I think this style of music is just not for me
I did not like this at all
Not for me.
Going in blind, I don't know any songs from this. Title track really good. And then gradually I started hating it more and more. Considered a point for the influence on blur, but I just dislike everything about it from track 2 till the end. The sound, the singing voice, the drumming, the songs, everything.
beatles copy cat that was extremely annoying and grating on the ears
meh
Oh my gosh, this is just so boring...
Woof, I love a handful of The Kinks songs, but this album didn't contain any of them. Difficult to get through.
Not my jam, pretty boring. It feels dated, as one would expect. 1/5 stars.
Dogshit Britslop. I’m allowed to say this, I’m English
The kind of music I can't stand. I can see where it would be important as a precursor for future rock bands or a touch-point for music at the time, especially as it relates to the UK and their lasting influence on the genre. However, this was tough to get through and I will not pick it up again.
Not a fan - if I wanted to listen to The Beatles, I would just listen to The Beatles. (03.25)
Not into it, kinda corny and too wacky for me
Boring with all the songs sounding the same.
Why is your name done if you are not done mate

Not for me. Sounded beatle-ish
Beatles but poopoo and terrible
I remember nothing after listening
Rhythm and blues good. Fairground novelty bad. Beatles did it better. Vocals are monotone.
Not for me. 1/5
I’ve never been a fan of the Kinks, and listening to this album has only served to reinforce those feelings for me. If I wanted to listen to the Beatles then I would. This feels like a very insincere attempt to capitalize on the insane popularity of the Beatles during this time period. It’s almost identical musically, just without the magical songwriting duo of Lennon-McCartney. I’m not surprised that this album was initially considered a flop, but I have absolutely no idea how it ended up being popular. 1*. No bueno.
I am really tired of being force-fed cutesy, tepid, unremarkable 60s British trollop. Musically, it’s like a bad imitation of Beatles records released 5 years prior, and lyrically it comes off as a hokey caricature of some pastoral English fantasy. It’s kind of like the bro-country of its time and place: lyrics that harken some made-up version of rural life over boring, uninspired tracks. Ranges from deeply unmoving to actively irritating. 3/10
Awful
Whoever is ‘the poor man’s Beatles’, the Kinks are the poor man’s version of that. Insipid rubbish, don’t know how they’re possibly popular. Even their best song (don’t need to name it) is sort of shit? Imagine making this at the same time that the Beatles and Beach Boys were releasing those records…. Embarrassing.
Not good
Blandly unexceptional 60s rock. Should have been the album with Lola on it instead the second half of this album really sucks except for wicked anabella
I’m getting bored just writing this review
3/10 very repetitive in all the wrong ways
Feel like they’re singing about nothing important or significant. I’d rather listen to the Beatles.
most of these songs feel like children’s music. fave: johnny thunder, people take pictures of each other least: annabella <~ why was it so scary “people take pictures of each other just to prove they existed”
Not music
Twee bollocks
Did not like it. It was putting me to sleep.
nah
Not impressed this time around either
Couldn't get into it. Sounded like Spinal Tap's Flower People
Meh. Definitely older and not really my style. The link is to the deluxe version of the album, which is 2hrs 40mins instead of the standard album which is 40 mins. Overall a cool vibe, but not my style at all.
No, not for me at all!
Hated it
Too much Beatles-style.
Far too 60’s for me. Not a sound/vibe a like. Three tracks is enough.
kamala albumi. kauhea. halloween oli viikko sitten, tarvi pelotella enää tälläsellä KURALÄISKÄLE 60-LUKU POPPEILUA... Kink? Was soll daran Kinky sein? beatles maininta tähän väliin (1/116). album is over... The time is gone, the album is over, thought I'd something more to say... incredible... picture book
Saai hippie gezeik
Boring old hippy music
The late 60's period where the main British pop songwriters started turning their minds to more "serious" work is a whole genre unto itself. I love those early seventies films That'll Be The Day and Stardust, with David Essex playing prototypical British 60's popstar who then becomes a bit of a legend in his own lunchtime and gets all conceptual etc. Sports fans if you've not seen those films they are well worth checking out. I don't think it is any coincidence that Pete's going down the Pinball Wizard/Quadrophenia path and Ray pops out Village. Serious artists they are by gum. Now in Pete's case I lurrvve Quadro, and as big a Ray (and Dave) fan as I am Village just doesn't cut it for me. I was told to listen to back in the day, in one of those Pet Sounds moments we've all had, but despite repeated listens it just doesn't do it for me. The master melody maker spent a little too much time on the concepts and forgot about the melodies, now that I think about it I don't think he ever really got the magic back, bar a couple of super moments later. The problem dear brethren is that it is just straight out boring. I saw Ray at the Enmore about 10 years ago, great show, not a whole lot of Village in the set let me tell you..
60’s English rock. Similar in style to the stuff the Beatles were doing a couple years earlier but not good. It lost me at the “fum diddle dee” part of phenomenal Cat. 1-2?
I hate this. Sitting by the riverside is like a nightmare circus. Phenomenal cat and all my friends are some of the worst things I’ve ever heard. How can someone make a song like that. Steam powered trains sounds like a rip off of smokestack lightning. I hate when these square British bands play blues, it’s so cringe.
Super duper not into this.
Certainly better than their Arthur album but still pretty bland. Starts off ok but descends into bland 60’s twee shite nearer the end
Audible AIDS. It's like they decided to create a whole album based on the naff shite the Beatles did and forgot about the rest
Why?!
Wouldn’t listen again: a poor man’s version of The Beatles!
Ehh
shit album fr. this some redneck ohio alabama long island shit
Completely Naff
60s whiny hippy garbage
60's generic Brit Pop ......
Boring. All sounds the same. Weird songs, not accessible.
I found it kind of silly and weird. Not for me.
Just hasn't aged well at all I assume, too many songs that are just nothing or even almost annoying now. Two good songs on it are within the first three listed, which means you have 12 really quite bad songs left to listen to.
Not my cup of tea at all
Kink? Was soll daran Kinky sein? Schlechter hippy schmutzt, bah. Sind das die Beatles in b e h i n d e r t?
Meh. Hot Fuzz took the first track, the rest of the album sounds too much like the beatles
Wannabe Beatles. Starts off way too country. Wack. 1/5
Couldn't make it through the whole album.
This is the biggest Beatles wanna-be album I've ever heard. I hate it
Like if a Wes Anderson movie was set in high school
