Reviews (page 4 of 8)

this is exactly the type of thing that i dont mind for a bit but starts to wear on my nerves after a bit. the good news is that the songs are short enough to stay interesting most of the way through.

I know a little of Guided By Voices, but I've liked what I've heard. This particular album is admittedly a bit odd from a structural sense, as it sounds like a collage of short lo-fi rock recordings in no particular order. Not poor by any means, the lyrics are a bit eccentric but the melodies are quite nice. Everything just comes at you quickly and changes gears just as you're getting settled in. I believe this is the group's schtick, though.

Interesting

Indie rock, diverse and high quality songwriting, many different guitar sounds, good album in a genre that I don’t know much about.

Some cool quick hitters.

Really didn't impress me. Felt a lot like Sonic Youth or the like.

I quite liked this one, bit of an Incubus vibe, quite interesting lyrics and nice tune to the songs

Is there such a thing as too lo-fi for its own good? Probably not; I just don't think I cared for the songwriting here. Probably will grow on me though.

My major problem with this album is the length of the tracks. I prefer songs that give you space, where they are long enough that you can breathe and live in them for a while. I enjoyed these songs, but they are claustrophobic in their brevity. Just as soon as I start to get into the song, it's over and the next track is almost done as well.

It was a pleasant listen

Songs are nice and short, but there's too many of them. I don't hate them. The singing could have been better, but it's fine. It doesn't seem essential to me. Favorite song: dumbcharger.

It’s kind of weird to have a 42 minute album consisting of 28 very short songs, but that’s what we have here. I for the most part enjoyed this, but there is a lot of junk in here and as is, it is a 3 star album at best. If I could magically edit it down to 10 or 12 songs, and lengthen the survivors a bit, this could be a 4 star album for me.

This was okay. Good background music while I was driving.

Never heard of this band, but I like their sound and style. I would like the album a lot more if there were fewer songs that were developed more - as is, they're all too abbreviated, like they're just preliminary demos; and they stuck to a single genre-sound throughout.

Interesting one, had heard of Guided By Voices but hadn't listened to their music before. Really lo-fi, post punk energy with very short tracks that make an impression then end before they overstay their welcome. Music with a cool vibe, but not sure I connected enough with it to return to this album.

Garage band sound, with some good ideas.

So for thirty years I thought this was an r’n’b group with gospel vocals because of the name. Uh, hello, 90s lo-fi indie rock? I appreciate the creativity of this record, the dozen+ snippets where you’re dropped into what feels like a full-fledged song for a minute or two, then bang, into the next one. Very Abbey Road medley. It sounded pretty good, but I wasn’t especially taken with it.

Yeah...pretty cool

A lot going on in this album. 28 songs in 41 minutes with some tonal changes throughout. Nothing bad, but hard to get ahold of any consistent theme. This is music I like, but in a weird style

Interesting band. Very short catchy songs. Kind of like an indie mix of neutral milk hotel with a bit more psychedelic. Not bad, but not super memorable.

I love the idea of these little snippets of songs in a way, was engaging and a cool approach to the album. At the end of day there wasn't a ton that stood out for me but the concept is good and it was fun

maioria das músicas curtinhas. algumas quase vinhetas. (28 musicas = 41 minutos) tem muita coisa muito boa e muita doideira que não é meu gosto. entendo o pq é influente, mas é um disco DIFÍCIL de ouvir.

This is hard to judge - the songs that I liked I found too short to fully enjoy, but the ones I hated at least were over very quickly.

There are a couple of really good tracks here, like "Game of Pricks" and "Motor Away," but most are just sketches or demos. As the album progresses it becomes increasingly distorted, and trebly, which is not an inherently bad thing. A fair amount of potential, but most of it is not worth returning to.

138/1089 - Based on my experiences with lo-fi hip hop and rock, "lo-fi" seems to be a code word for bad. But in this case, the lo-fi production is the most interesting part of the album. Kinda reminded me of some indie tracks on the Newgrounds audio portal. Overall an adequate album.

S’ok

The energy is good on most of these tracks, but some are severely underdeveloped. More snippets than songs. Overall easy to listen to but not very inspired.

Kinda sounds like a grunge Beatles with swearing

Interesting

28 short snippets of songs in 41 minutes. I haven't really heard lo-fi albums before so this was my first listen. It's a bit too underproduced and it sounds more a like a demo, but it wasn't a bad listen, though not sure I'll listen to it again.

Album 788 of 1089 Guided By Voices-Alien Lanes (1995) Rating : 3 / 5 28 short songs in 41 minutes. Some good melodies that end as soon as they begin. No wasted time here. Worthy of another listen.

Pretty good

Fun, but I don’t see how it’s influential enough to be included on this list. A couple songs I’d come back to but most was just forgettable garage rock.

Maybe a 4

Fuzzy and fun

Very garage bandy sound on here. Short songs, and too many of them. It sounds like it was recorded in the 60's, so they're a few decades late with this sound. All that said, it isn't terrible, but it isn't necessarily moving either. Middle of the road. 3.

This is a band I have truly never heard of until now. Reminded me a bot of the Who. Enjoyed the listen, but not knowing any of the songs it was hard to connect. I’d probably listen again of it was being played somewhere.

The vocals are nice. The guitar is loud and bad—guitar hero-esque A bit amateur/unpolished I like “as we go up”

nice demo tape

alt rock , longe de ser o album favorito. 3 estrelas

As a big hodgepodge of basement demos from America with a 60s British influence, this could be enjoyable. But the whole premise does not make for a fantastic album, and one that is more a curio. For the snippets of undeniably great melody it gets midway in the ratings. It has piqued my interest to listen to some of their more developed albums.

meh, this is aight, nothing awesome. 28 tracks for 41 min? That's an average of 1.4 min per track. 3 stars. Cause it has a cool sound otherwise I would have only gave it 2

sympatoche meme si ya pas vraiment un son qui me reste en tête, ils sont tous sympa

I like the concept, I like some of it. The only issue for me is that there's far to many songs. The length is fine generally but it just keeps going and going and becomes a little boring. First listen was fine, second I'm looking at how long is left

Actually liked, but liked their eps that auto played better

Very interesting, nice melodies. I liked it, but nothing that really got me hooked. But I want to listen to it again, for sure.

Everyone's too hard on these guys but they've actually got a really good vibe going

I listened to this straight after Laibach, which felt like a breath of fresh air. Then I found it annoying and shut it off. Returning to it, though, I find it better than I thought. Some annoying bits, but overall not bad.

Really cool vibes from this album and I had a great time listening to it, however; none of the songs are particularly special on their own largely because they are all so short. Each song isn’t a cohesive experience in and of itself but rather the album is a series of interesting strung together ideas and sounds. This is an album I would love to get on vinyl and just let it play for some chill vibes. But none of the songs are good enough by themselves to put on a playlist.

Not bad, but nothing that really makes you go crazy for the album

It's only getting a 3 because I like rock, and this is somewhere between indie rock and alt rock. DIY rock. But too DIY and spastic (too many songs at or under a minute), like they're intentionally trying to be weird or off-putting. Like the snores in Ex-Supermodel. I think they could've stuck to one aspect, like subversive or odd but interesting lyrics paired with solid rock hooks. Like in Game of Pricks, My Valuable Hunting Knife, Little Whirl, and My Son Cool. They ended showing they can be melodic with Alright. A little more of that please (with lyrics to go with it).

Greatly prefer Bee Thousand

I don’t remember anything about this album, truthfully. Upon skimming the songs for this rating, it sounded fine.

Some interesting stuff. But not really.

This sounds like the bonus disc to an albums 30th anniversary deluxe edition. The work in progress songwriting demos.

Liked Game of Pricks, didn't like when he randomly says "faggot"

I thought this was pretty cool. There’s a sorta dusty/fuzzy mix that is applied across the board that adds to the immersion and a cohesive sound across the album. This is despite not really knowing what you’re going to get from track to track. It was cool and is something I could see myself revisiting and appreciating more.

This was ok, lots of short songs, I’d listen again.

An album full of extremely short songs that blended together so well I didn't even realise I'd breezed through the entire album. That said nothing really jumped out at me, though the entire sound was so similar to stuff I've heard in the years since. 3/5

There's a lot to like here, but I don't know that it comes together as well as I'd like. I don't give bonus points for being from Ohio, but it is neat that we've got these folks. 3.5 stars, rounding down because I'm self-conscious of how many 4s and 5s I've given

I'd heard some of these tunes before in much more polished form. This almost sounded like a demo tape but I still enjoyed the short, almost sampler-type nature of the album. That said, there are a *lot* of forgettable tunes on this album, so you drown a bit in quantity vs quality. A few bangers on here, so won't go below 3 on it.

3.5 I did really enjoy this! I listened to it twice all the way through. My only thing is I SO enjoyed some of the melodies and songs that I wish we could have stayed with them a minute or so longer! I get that isn’t their style, but it’s also what made me less on board with it!

Never really listened to GBV but I can see the appeal.

I think my brain fell out. I can't keep up with this. What is happening? Wait. That's a guy snoring. Whyyyyyyy Half of this is really good. A quarter of it might have been had they finished it, and the rest is either just weird for no apparent reason or a bit shit.

lot of little ideas here, fairly enjoyable but feels demo-ish

Loses its steam part way through. I hate the snoring shit so much.

It's alright. Nothing more.

Fairly enjoyable. Not sure I understand the hype here, but I’m sure it hit different back in the day. At least it’s short.

There were a few decent tracks, but overall this didn't really hold my interest. 2.5/3

I feel like I should like this more than I do. The concept behind it is very good. I just have a hard time understanding what the lo-fi aesthetic is adding. I went and found hi-fi recordings of a few of their tracks, and I much prefer them. Oh well, it's their choice. 3/5

On of their best, though perhaps note as catchy as others. Still high threes.

I liked this well enough, pretty fizzy and melodic

Grand, some good tracks

It’s like listening to a trailer for a longer album.

It's funny that Music recorded in a basement flat sounds so crap Like Beatles unplugged raw , real , rugged

So many questions about this one. Why are all the songs so short? Why do most of them sound Beatlesque - except the one that sounds like Status Quo?

interesting...

Not bad, feel like you have 5 albums in 1. Unfortunately nothing outstanding. This will remain an interesting album but forgettable.

Interesting introduction and I needed a few runs to get used to it. I really like their musical style. But most of the tracks don't feel like complete songs. They feel kind of unfinished like on a demo-tape and a bit unambitious and therefore the whole album can sometimes be as annoying as tik-tok. It's a pity because there is enough potential on this for a proper album with 8 to 10 full songs and at least a four stars rating!

Not sure on it's production yet, will give it some more time, some songs are so different to others. Some of it is quite good, Beatleish. The longer songs are really good.

Interesting enough idea I suppose, good for my modern attention sp...ooh a bird!

Mostly a very frustrating listen, with occasional high spots. It felt like a sequel to Flood by TMBG but not as fun.

This has a lot of snippets of things that could really go somewhere. I know it's the vibe they are looking for but I don't know whether this is brilliant work in progress or just a bit lazy. It's listenable though. And it is what it is.

Generic indy 2.5

It's lo-fi rock, but not exactly punk and/or garage rock. It's pretty hard to get it either musically or historically important, but I can't say I didn't enjoy it at least a bit. I guess some rate between 2 and 2.5 is fair enough for an album that costs 10 bucks (according to the Wikipedia page).

Fine. Genuinely couldn't tell at times whether it was from the 60s or 90s

This is one of those cases where I admittedly laughed as soon as I saw what I got today. This is a collection of 28 short songs, six of which get past the two-minute mark. Not to mention, this is a lo-fi album that you can tell only cost ten bucks to record with the grainy straight-from-the-tape production quality. Add to that, Guided by Voices are known for their brief songs that usually end abruptly, which is what I noticed from listening to Alien Lanes as songs tend to stop just as they're getting good. This is a shame because I can hear how Robert Polland has a knack for writing good hooks, and he and his band played decent enough to pull them off. Tracks like "A Salty Salute", "Watch Me Jumpstart", "As We Go Up, We Go Down", "Game of Pricks", "Motor Away", and "My Valuable Hunting Knife" showcase some strong ideas influenced by the British Invasion sound that simply needed a little more time in the oven. Although, other tracks were ostensibly bad - the grainy snoring that overwhelms "Ex-Supermodel", the burbling of the vocals on "Chicken Blows", and especially "Hit" which the most it can muster in 23 seconds is the drop of the derogatory f-word used against homosexuals. Ultimately, Guided by Voices on this record sounded like a group of lads that had a lot of potential but were given a lot of creative freedom without any guidance. From the looks of it, Pollard would reform the band with various lineups, work with producers, and embrace longer songwriting than can reach the 3-minute and 4-minute mark. I respect the man's hustle. As for Alien Lanes, cherry-pick your favorites and go from there.

My initial thought on hearing the first couple of songs is that I really don't like lo-fi. It's muddy and crusty and not at all pleasing to listen to. But then I heard a few songs that had potential, and I tried to shift my perspective to what was going on musically, rather than the production value. I'm still not a fan of lo-fi, but it's not horrible.

A decent collection of rock songs, it's okay.

Had some enjoyable and interesting moments, but I feel like the format hurts this album a bit. Never could really get into it, maybe I'd need a bit more time. It sounds good in the moment, but I literally don't remember anything from it.

Favoritter: Game of Pricks, Closer You Are

Idk this album came and went and didn't left a mark on me. Its not bad but its nothing more to grab to. It feels like a unfinished demo tape. But the Structure is kinda interesting somehow.

Seeing the sheer amount of tracks I immediately thought it would be a slog because overly indulgent long albums often are. But the album is only 41 minutes! For good and sometimes a little bad the songs are so short each if I didn’t like one it was over really quick, but that also happened for ones I did like! I could see coming back to digest this one more possibly.

Interesting

I kind of liked these jangly little ditties!

A Salty Salute 3.3 Evil Speakers 3.4 Watch Me Jumpstart 3.5 They're Not Witches 3 As We Go Up, We Go Down 3.2 (I Wanna Be a ) Dumbcharger 3 Game of Pricks 3 The Ugly Vision 2.8 A Good Flying Bird 2.7 Cigarette Tricks 2.5 Pimple Zoo 2.7 Big Chief Chinese Restaurant 2.8 Closer You Are 3 Auditorium 3 Motor Away 3.1 Hit 3 My Valuable Hunting Kniofe 3 Gold Hick 2.6 King and Caroline 2.8 Striped White Jets 2.9 Ex-Supermodel 2.4 Blimps Go 90 3.2 Strawdogs 3 Chicken Blows 2.8 Little Whirl 2.6 My Son Cool 3 Always Crush Me 2.7 Alright 3 Score: 2.928571429

There was a lot I really liked about this. Great fuzzy, low key vibe, but then they would throw in the most shrill sounds. Or the track that just has someone snoring overtop of it, what is that? Also, nothing stuck with me. I hadn't even realized I was on my second listen until I heard the snoring again. It wasn't awful, but I don't see myself ever listening to it again.

An interesting big of various ideas, but it lacks consitency and has a rough production

Hard to believe I’ve never heard them before. I think I could really like this if I listened more

Some tracks were good, some not so much, can't give it more than a 3

The great thing about short songs is that when they're terrible they don't last for that long.

Lots of good ideas in this demo tape, oh it’s actually the finished product? Oh, feels like a bunch of good ideas but not fully fleshed out songs

A bit M'eh

GbV have made 41 studio albums so using my calculator have written 3.7 billion songs. Hit and miss as usual. But still joyous

Well... that was an interesting album. Fortunately, it's definitely a good interesting album. It's kind of hard to compare Alien Lanes to any other album I've generated thus far. We have an album here comprised of 28 songs, which would make the album long if these songs weren't all incredibly short. The longest one is just under 3 minutes, and the shortest song lasts for a whopping 18 seconds, which is probably one of the shortest songs on this entire list. The rapid changing in song format and lyrical matter kind of reminds me of the Beatles White Album in a way, just way shorter. This is one of two things that give the album a demo-tape-like feel to Alien Lanes. The other thing is the production. The production here is very low-quality, but given the album's lo-fi nature, I'm assuming that was a stylistic choice. Honestly, I'd call it a good choice. I think the production gives the album a unique feel to it. I do think hi-fidelity versions of these songs could be cool though. The singing is solid, the writing is mostly decent, and the overall feel of the album is quite unique. I don't love this album, but I definitely respect it enough to see why it's here. High 3/5.

Indie. Ni fu ni fa.

Indie rock, lo-fi,power pop ... un poco largo.

Surprised this is so early. Feels like a precursor to emo/indie/garage. Some weird hybrid. Some interesting use of sound and tone. But overall nothing really stood out to me.

While a 28 song album sounds intimidating at first, in true GBV fashion this is also only about 40 minutes. It’s a breeze through a wide range of genres, with some fleshed out songs and some merely snippets of ideas, and the instrumentation and stylistic approach is all over the place. It’s fun, it’s quick and to the many many points, but it’s difficult to connect too much with anything that’s going on

One on hand, it’s cool because this is the kind of stuff I’d never seek out on my own, much less listen to the whole album. On the other, I feel like it’s 2 am and my college roommate is asleep and I see his phone open to some voice memos of seedlings of songs that he and his band have been toying around with and I take a listen and shrug and think, “Eh, not bad. Good for him.” I don’t hate it, but I definitely don’t love it. These feel like the beginnings of song ideas, and the rug gets pulled out from under my feet right as I start feeling invested. But maybe I just don’t get it. This is probably a dream for folks with ADD.

It’s fine

I like it. REM vibes with an idiosyncratic track length, kind of experimental format, not super memorable but interesting and enjoyable.

Deed niet zo veel voor mij, bij tijden zelfs wat vervelend. Muziek was hier en daar prima, z’n stem stond mij tegen.

Lo-fi rock with that uses a lot of short songs, some of which are like micro-tracks. Took me a few plays to warm up to this one but the sound is nice and there are some good hooks scattered throughout.

I knew "Game of Pricks" off this album, good song. I was also surprised that they fit 28 songs in 41 minutes. Overall, a solid 3 for me.

After a brief read going into this I had low hopes but this was actually not bad. Some good ideas here, but the thing with these albums is that the good ideas don't last long enough and they're interspersed with a few that don't make the grade. First half better than the latter half, but maybe I just got jaded.

Some little gems throughout but I’ll never understand albums with LOADS of short songs.

It’s not surprising that a lo-fi 28-song, 40 minute album is a mixed bag, but that almost adds to the chaotic experience. The best moments really stand out, and while not every experiment pays off, the ones that don’t only last at most two minutes.

Meh. I like the sound, but 28 songs in 41 minutes? They all sound like "Hey, we could do something with this." They are all unfinished.

some nice pop songs in here

What’s most surprising to me is that, given its utter tunelessness, its tiresome, nonsensical lyrics, and its intentionally miserable production quality, taken as a whole, the piece is still moderately interesting! Well, not that interesting. I get that fleshing out any of these rather-jingle-sounding sketches into something resembling a legitimate song would ruin the whole aesthetic, but I rather wish they had tried.

好短好diy,说实话这样根本就不完整…

I saw that this album was described as lo-fi, but jeez, is it ever. At their most polished, the songs feel like demos. At their least, they're vaguely melodic noise. This album is 41 minutes, yet there are 28 songs. Only five of them hit the two minute mark. None of them hit three. The lyrics are exceedingly offbeat, usually approaching word salad. This is all obviously an artistic choice, and I get it, but it doesn't exactly make for a great listening experience, at least not for a whole album length. There are times when I start to like what they're doing, but by the time I realize it it's already over. That said, there are some tiny gems on here. Frankly, they're puny! But I do like it when they harmonize. It reminds me of 60s British Invasion stuff. Despite everything, it wasn't a slog to get through. They definitely kept me guessing at every turn, and I can appreciate that. Fav tracks: Game of Pricks, A Good Flying Bird, Blimps Go 90, Chicken Blows, Little Whirl, Alright

Smooth, mellow, nothing stood out but was enjoyable

Нормально

I have other stuff to do today so my heart sank a bit when I saw there were 28 tracks on this album. Then it rose a bit when I saw that despite this, it was only 41 minutes long. Then it rose a bit more when I heard delightful slices of melodic lo-fi alt rock like As We Go Up, We Go Down and Game of Pricks. Then it sank back down a bit as the album went on. There are some nice little bits and pieces here and there but it kinda feels like a bunch of demos/intros of varying quality thrown together. Is that really what constitutes for a 'must-hear' album? Even though I'm not sure it warranted inclusion, I am thankful that the generator finally introduced me to the music of a band whose name I've heard several times before. 2.5

Raw and edgy or just poor production? I’m not to sure to be honest.

Pretty decent, didn't overstay its welcome.

Propper Indie.

Each song is quick and dirty, almost DIY. I wish some of them lingered a bit longer though.

There's one amazing song on this album. It's called "Game of Pricks" and it outshines the other tracks. The songs before it were a bit boring. It did get quite better afterwards but not to the same level as "Game of Pricks". I also loved "Alright" at the end of the album. I'll give "Alien Lanes" 3 stars.

A Salty Salute opens things on a familiar tone -- reminds me a lot of crustier Spoon. LoFi recording, some husk to the vocals, and a simple melody. The Ugly Vision is wonderfully uncomfortable -- makes me think a bit of a more southern-inspired Modest Mouse with a more pleasant singer. I've tried Guided By Voices before... didn't stick then, not really sticking now. This is all fine 90s indie rock. I dig the LoFi production throughout and the short song structures. While it is all enjoyable enough and pleasant in the background, it wasn't something that had me excited to come back for repeated listens. I appreciate it, but not that much. 3 / 5

I was convinced I had to look up the actual end of the album to skip out on the deluxe version songs, but nope. 28 songs in 41 minutes is mental. Once again, I take longer pisses than some of these songs. This was a crazy album. Who tf decides to make something like this? Every song had a different vibe to it. Multiple ones I heard huge Beatles influence and then a million other weird random things. Just wish some of these songs were fleshed out a little bit more. Kinda respect it and see why it's on the list, but not for me and won't be back.

I wish these songs felt more complete. Another reviewer (or maybe several of them) said that this album felt like a demo for a great album and I think that's what i'm hearing. Loads of potential and a lot of cool parts, but most of the songs feel unrealized.

Not for meeeee

Didn't hate it.

Can a forty one minute album be enjoyed fully when all the tracks are this short? I suppose that is the main question with this. And I think my answer is no. If the tracklist was condensed halfway to about 14 songs, I feel I’d enjoy this more. However it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting. Very short track lengths aren’t an alien (haha) concept to me, but an entire album of them is. As for the actual musicality, there’s certainly slacking in the rock, but no relaxing. There’s consistent heaviness and (albeit often half-arsed) high energy. Perhaps if the music itself was slightly different, the short tracks would work better. But in all it’s, again, very interesting and certainly enjoyable enough.

Very nice album with great vibe that kind of gets boring past the twentieth songs, because the very same concept is applied over and over again to each songs until it becomes rotten to the core. I like the slacker and rushed ideas concept, but it's pushed a little too far for me.

Definitely get some hints of inspiration from the 60s pop/rock bands and overall it’s not too bad. Nothing blew my mind by any means, but enjoyable enough even if there were a couple times I asked myself what I was listening to. I don’t know if I’ll come back to this one, but a couple songs coming up on a shuffle wouldn’t bother me. Also, this has to be the winner for shortest average track time out of all of the albums on the list.

not bad but not for me 3

This reminds me a lot of The Who Sell Out. Some short songs that could be pop brilliant. The developed songs on this album are catchy and indie gold. But there’s just a lot of bite size tunes throughout that make you work for those songs.

Wasn’t sure what to expect, I’ve heard of this band before but didn’t have a clue what they’d sound like. And with 28 tracks coming in at 41 minutes, I had zero expectations. With that, I pretty much enjoyed everything here! I liked the quick, bite sized songs. It felt like the group didn’t want to get too stuck in one place sonically and they truly recorded whatever they wanted. I’ll have to check out some of their other releases.

Strange stuff wish some songs were longer.

Something had represent lo-fi in this list and I agree this is pretty damn good. I'm all for DIY recording but they had enough money to buy a decent set of microphones at this point in their career, maybe some sound dampening foam. 7/10 Kind of annoying when the bad recording is deliberate. Great for what it is though

I'm on the fence here. Although I did enjoy this album in parts, most of the tracks were done just as I was starting to vibe with them. It actually left me feeling like I needed some better lo-fi and I ended up on a Neutral Milk Hotel binge to fill my needs better than this did. 3 stars, would have been a strong 4 if there were half the songs and they were twice as long.

First time listener of Guided by Voices. I know this is their thing but some of these songs sound like demos that have not been fleshed out as of yet. That's probably the purpose. It gives me a bit of whiplash to get settled into hearing a song and then another song comes on a minute later. As someone who has complained about song length, I probably shouldn't complain about short songs. They move so fast it takes quite a few listens to catch everything going on in each song. This is lo-fi by its very definition with an intentionally fuzzy sounding production technique. Enjoyed it but the catalog is just so massive I don't know if I could ever catch up with them.

Another Band I’ve never heard of…have I been living under a rock? This is a good, catchy, simple album.

Interesting album with a unique mix

Not bad! Did have a very unique layout. 3.5/5

Started well but got less chilled out, and less enjoyable as it went on

Definately the best album I’ve heard recorded inside a bin. I think there is some pretty dodgy lyrics on there but is so muffled I can’t really tell.

This band is so... unique. The sheer volume of music they have published intimidates me. I've explored a bit, but it all sounds samey to me. Allen Lanes has a lot of variety though. The first track to catch my attention was As We Go Up, We Go Down because I recognized it. I was shocked that I was five songs in already. Felt like maybe three. Game of Pricks and Motor Away were kinda cool too. There's a lot of filler here, but that seems to be the band's MO.

Interesting

Ok. Sounds like a lot of other stuff. Also sounds like a demo album.

I always want to like Guided By Voices more than I actually do. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5

Albums like this are one of the best things about this challenge. Scuzzy, Indie-adjacent 90s band I’ve heard of but never listened to? Good start. 28 tracks? Uh-oh. But wait, 41 minutes total. And all tracks under 3 minutes. Most of them under 2 minutes and some of them under 30 seconds? What’s up here then? Well, it’s a fun little blast through the mind of Robert Pollard. Some of it fades out, some blends into the next idea, some of it comes to a deliberate - and sometimes abrupt - halt. I didn’t necessarily love it but it kept my attention and I was keen to give it another go soon. This maybe a slightly generous score but I just respect the fact it does what it wants and never outstays its welcome.

I'll give them props for having an eclectic mix of songs. The problem is all the songs are pretty boring and seem like they're unfinished.

J’ai aucun souvenir de l'album, ni même le genre, faque 3 pis ont n’en parle plus

Liked it more than I didn’t. Some songs were annoying. Overall it was ok.

Decently interesting but a bit boring

Af en toe moeilijk, vaak origineel, en soms echt uniek. Maar over het geheel klinkt het net iets te vaak slecht.

Ok. quite interesting but wouldn't rush to listen again

I only knew Game of Pricks, which is a song I really like. I wasn't really blown away by the rest of the album. I like their dedication to lo-fi recording, but in places it sounded awful.

It's like stoner post-punk. I don't love it but I appreciate the vibes.

When it's good, it's good, no doubt - but not all material is. Hardly surprising with 28 tracks. Kill your Darlings, Robert.

Definitely had the 90s indie/alt rock sound and reminded me of so many bands during that time. There were some choices musically and lyrically I didn’t care for, but it overall is what I would expect from a mid-90s album of this genre.

Didn't vibe

Viele kurze Stücke, ganz ok zu hören 3/5

nothing special but nothing bad

I don't really know if I liked this or not. The songs were so short I couldn't really get into them, but overall I liked their sound.

I'm enjoying the short song format. This album has grown on me as I have listened. Halfway through now, and some real gems on here. Interesting lyrics. I'm not loving the second half of the album as much.

Mixed bag but I did find it an interesting listen

me costo escucharlo, good songs they just sound very VERY similar one to each other, nada increíble. very light 5/10

surprisingly not too bad if you listen to it for a while. The songs are all very short

Musically not bad. Just felt like a lot of unfinished ideas.

I don't get it. It's good, but I don't consider it great. Not sure why it would be an album I must listen to.

Typical 3 star fare. Wasnt great, wasn't awful and it was good at times. Nothing special, though.

I've heard of this band but it's the first time I've listened to them. I would've liked it they took the time to develop 10 of these to full songs. As it is, the shortness of each track makes it feel like a demo.

This album isn't really the type of music I listen to, but I did find it somewhat enjoyable. My only issue with the album is that all of the songs are really short so they end before you know it.

'Alien Lanes' contains an ambitious 28 songs over the course of 41 minutes. Inevitably, that ends up feeling more like a collection of half-formed demos than a proper album. The music sounds like a cross between the Beatles and pop-punk, which isn't terrible. Beatles fans may recall the suite of songs on 'Abbey Road' formed from incomplete songs. It's a similar effect here but arguably out stays its welcome fairly quickly. It's a novelty and as with other similar albums, any tracks less than 90 seconds are frustratingly short while the others are pretty decent. For me, I'd have cut out all of those micro tracks and called it a quick EP. There is something interesting about including a load of sketches of songs but for me, it's not something that I'd ever want to listen to again. Which is a shame because there are some genuinely good songs that get lost in the sprawl here. I may need to save them in their own playlist.

Robert Pollard is a man who is not short on ideas. And ideas are exactly what he presents, rather than fully-developed songs that have been labored over - and that’s ok! Seems like he gets a little hook and riff in his head, presses record on whatever is lying around…and that’s what ends up on the record. It’s not easy to digest even though it’s only 41 minutes long because of the sheer volume of ideas. Some are great and some are out of your head as fast as they were in it. Most of the songs longer than about 90 seconds are really enjoyable. Lots of poppy hooks (many seem Beatles-influences) hidden beneath the lo-fi sonic experimentation.

#250. This might could've won a middle school talent show. 3/5: A for effort, I guess

Fast, melodic & basic. Cost $10 to record and you can really hear it. Crunchy and bright guitars, relatively low in the mix and the vocals really dominate. A ton of songs, none more than 2.5 minutes - most under 1.5 mins - it give this a pretty thrown together half thought out feel. Unsurprisingly the longer songs are best, because they’re actual songs, not just self-recorded demos to come back to and finish. Many ideas, little execution, lots of wasted potential bc there are some great moments and sounds. But the songs finish before they even start. Classic slacker trick: if we don’t really try nobody can say we failed.

Favourite tracks: game of pricks; salty salute

I read only a little about lo-fi music. New thing to me that I don't believe I enjoy, if these guys are representative of the genre. There were some bits here and there that I sorta liked. At times, I heard hints of early Beatles. But mostly, I think I'd like them if they'd just try harder to be better musicians. 2.5 if it was an option, but rounding up to 3 as I wasn't consistently irritated by their music.

28 songs in 41 minutes! 28 songs usually means a double album, and I often feel like double albums should have been an LP, but when they’re all less than 2 minutes long the song experiments are much more tolerable. I first heard GBV around 2003, from a guy I worked at a comic book shop with who loved them and The Tragically Hip. I listened to both for a little bit, but then the indie music boom of the 00s quickly put them on the back burner. “Alien Lanes” was not what I had briefly listened to though. “Bee Thousand” was a bit familiar, but it seems it was “Mag Earwhig!” that I knew the best. Man, were they prolific! 20+ song albums 1-2 times per year! In that way they were the King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard of their day - unrivaled productivity. “Bee Thousand” is more in the vein of “Alien Lanes,” with most songs under 2 minutes. “Mag Earwhig!” reins it in better. Some songs actually pass the 2 minute mark(!), and the production is cleaner. So what I’ve now learned is that early GBV was just too lo-fi for me. Robert Pollard was proud of how quick and cheaply “Alien Lanes” was recorded, but with new collaborators and a more professional studio set up, I like the sound of “Mag Earwhig!” a lot more. So while “Alien Lanes” only gets a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me, “Mag Earwhig!” would be a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

This is a lot of songs, well not songs. Riffs with a couple lyrics is more like it. And I do like it. There is abundant potential in these tracks. This could be a 5 star album if they actually finished what they started. Each time I got into a groove with a track it was already the last track. The experience inspired me to revisit a fully formed song, Visions Of Johanna by Bob Dylan. The dude deserved a Nobel Prize just for that song. It’s a masterpiece. Unfortunately, Guided By Voices never stopped hitting the bong long enough to find out if they could turn Alien Lanes into one too.

Proto-Flaming Lips and about 100 songs long, but rarely going over 2 minutes per track, quite a trip. LoFi taken to the absolute lengths of low fidelity as it sounds it was recorded on a handheld tape recorder.

I really enjoyed so much of this, but can only give 3 stars bc this seems like just the framework of what could be a really rad album. Feels like we got scraps and I wanted more! OHIO represent ✌️

Too noisy

I don't know, maybe needs another listen as it went by fast

I was quite shocked when this ended. It seemed much shorter than I imagined it to be. I was just getting into it. I can imagine I would have loved this more if I’d heard it back in the day and replayed it many times. But i had no idea who they were and yet on first listen I was pleasantly surprised. I might well revisit this.

I have long been aware of this band but had never intentionally listened to their music before yesterday. The music was fine and some of the lyrics were clever but nothing stuck in my head and I’m not clamoring for more.

I expected to find this really difficult, but that wasn't the case. That said, this wasn't an album I connected with. There was some cool stuff going on throughout, but it never quite ascended to something that struck me as sublime or even above average. Perhaps, with multiple listens, I might better understand and appreciate what these guys are up to — though unless I'm trapped in a room with Scott for a week with nothing else to listen to, I don't see that happening. It may have even crept up to a 3.5, but I can't get to a 4, so a 3 it is.

Until starting this 1001 project I did not realize the 90s had such a distinct sound and vibe. This band strikes me as peak 90s indie scene. I would have been over the moon to catch them at Khyber Pass with my new boyfriend and his musician friends.

A band I'd heard of, but never bothered to seek out at the time. They were OK, but it is not a good sign when you are listening to it while you work, your ears perk up 'That song's OK' but Spotify has run on, and it is Long Division by Fugazi.... There was a weird 'snoring' chorus in one song

I'm not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't this. Not that it was bad -- I feel like I could name 5 albums it reminded me of, all of which were probably taking influence from this, rather than the other way around. The album's own lack of attention span was probably not a great accompaniment to a work day where I was struggling to pay attention ... throw in some random slurs and I have no idea how to rate this.

It was interesting! I appreciate the shortness of the songs. I didn't like that the second I actually tuned into the lyrics I heard the f slur, but this seems to unfortunately be a common theme with many of these albums. Idk if I would listen again, but I appreciated hearing it once.

The nice thing about this was if I didn’t like a song it was over quickly But also if I did like the song it was over quickly as well

Decent, but not outstanding

Grungey, up beat, indie rock with some proto-emo undertones. Nice album to break up the monotony with. Not a tastemakers choice, not an amazing album but definitely interesting and engaging. Think Superchunk.

Alien Lanes exudes a concise lo-fi charm, its 28 blink-and-you’ll-miss-them tracks evoking the feeling of scrubbing through radio static in search of the perfect fuzz-tinged gem.

I really enjoyed this album, it was fun and the idea of having tiny songs is a bit of a novelty! 28 songs in 41 minutes - Bravo!!!

A bunch of short songs that sound like they were recorded in a garage. Good times.

I forgor

I don't know. I do like short songs but some of these are over before they really establish anything. It's not bad but not thrilling. It doesn't help that I once knew a douchebag who was obsessed with GBV and thought they were the greatest thing ever. I guess a 3, but I kind of want to make it lower.

It was average to be honest.

Listened to this while doing my taxes. I definitely enjoyed this more than taxes...but taxes are the worst part. Good hazy mid 90s indie rock. Nothing groundbreaking, but still decent enough.

1000 ideen in schnappschüssen, aberr alles viel zu schnell vorbei

I wondered what the hell was going on when I heard the first couple of songs on the album. All in all thia was pretty decent

Good, too long though.

That was a nice listen. Kind of middle of the road for content, probably not going to throw that on the phone for mobile listening but I'll keep it in the at home collection

Was a nice change of pace. Sometimes it is nice to just have a bunch of quick songs. Will I listen to again: 50%

Interesting.

Liked it the more I listened.

Ooufff. Difficult one. It wasn't really bad, but it was too wild; too incoherent to make it work out for me.

Ja best goed, zaten paar goeie dingen tussen maar alle nummers zijn heeeeel kort en dat vind ik wat minder

a very alternative rock sound. very eclectic. at times you hear sounds reminiscent of the beatles, the black keys, the gin blossoms, cream… all with a deliberate lo-fi production quality. an adventurous listen in that you never knew what the next song would sound like. that’s ok because if you didn’t like the song you wouldn’t have to wait too long for the next one, in that most of the songs were under two minutes. highlights: “a salty salute”, “watch me jumpstart”, “closer you are”, “striped white jets”

Heard a lot about this band over the years but never listened until now. It’s poppy garage rock and perfectly fine even if nothing stands out as great.

Enjoyed this. But also constantly couldn’t not recall a single song

I really enjoyed the lofi nature of this album. it had the spirit of a band that was starting to find its way to something great. I love the roughness of it, its jittery but sweet, ragged yet lovely. I will be exploring more of their catalog for sure

Liked the first maybe 25% of the album. Catchy, quick songs. But I got very bored by half way through the album. I like the indie sound, but don’t know when I would enjoy listening to this. In the end, didn’t hate it, didn’t love it.

Ok, 3 stars

This was almost a good album. There are some good ideas here but, with comically short track lengths, nothing has enough time to breathe. Despite that, it flows very well and is quite good as a holistic album experience. Until Ex-Supermodel. That song made me cringe viscerally the whole time, and the album never really picked back up after there.

You just sat down at a local brewery and have 45 minutes and want to try everything so you start ordering flights. Some are great, some are good, some are average, some suck. That's this album in a nutshell. Goes by fast and in the end you enjoyed it but can't recall which songs you really like because you just drank 28 4 oz beers.

Meh.. just very full throughout most of its runtime. I appreciate the lo-if sound, and the vocals are nice. The mixing needs getting used to as well, as it’s all over the place. There’s some things I appreciate here, but most of this album is dull with most of the time basic lyrics. That F slur was uncalled for to..

Some good songs, but kind of fades into the background.

I love some songs from this album, but I also never think to listen to this album as a whole because there are 1000 songs on it.

This feels VERY 90S. This is both a good thing and a bad thing.

"Guided by Pricks" is the standout. So many tracks that Guided by Voices outstays its welcome. 3.2 stars rounded down.

I didn’t love it though I really thought I would… kinda meh

I like the lo fi sound but thats about it, lyrics and vocals leave a lot to be desired

Did not attract my attention

Pretty avant garde style of song writing mixed with a punkesqe album of short, under a minute songs. I prefer more conceived song writing but there were a few decent songs. The recording quality was interesting in a highly produced lofi sound scape. Interesting overall, not something I'll listen to again.

I really wanted to like this album. As someone relatively new to the GBV world, I haven’t heard many of their full albums. I’ve seen them live a couple times and thought the last show I went to was great. I even went to a GBV cover show last summer and had a blast. Their bigger hits are really fun live. But this album didn’t do it for me, sadly. A lot of songs felt unfinished and the sound quality wasn’t good. Giving them a 3 because it’s GBV, but I had higher expectations for this.

Very 90's. All over the place with short songs. Not terrible, but had a very garage band feel.

This is a collection of brief, indie-pop songs from a prolific group. The songs demonstrate the songwriting skills of the group's founder, Robert Pollard. Some songs are catchy, but all brief enough to leave you wanting more and to avoid becoming memorable. This was clearly influential - you can hear glimpses of many other indie-pop artists in this work.

I know short songs (~1:30) is kind of a tradition in punk/indie music but for me it’s difficult to listen to an entire album of 30ish song a that sometimes come off as undeveloped. Some of the songs were good, I just wish they went somewhere. Plus the use of f@&&0t was grating, and in 1995, it was starting to be in the realm of unacceptable.

Seemed pretty short.

Most of this is charmingly low-fi sounding, a few of the songs I wish were longer and more fleshed out, and others were just sort of grating.

How is this album both so short & so long? The good songs are good. The rest sound like unfinished demos.

These guys like short songs, as do I. Not the endless Genesis/Yes songs with an endless solo of 10+ minutes. Songs are pleasant to here, but after 15 minutes I thought: didn't I hear this one 5 minutes ago? Bit like a less exciting version of Dinosaur Jr or Pixies.

Really solid album except for the two songs are obvious pulls from Tommy and The Wall.

Nice sounds. I prefer their newer stuff tbh

Bagel Radioooooo 😁

Top 28 Hits

My first exposure to guided by voices. Obviously the first thing you notice is that it does not sound very good, which is presumably part of the vibe. On first listen it reminds me of They Might Be Giants, but less fun. There are several great tunes on here but many that just aren't, or in some cases aren't yet but could be. The sonic embodiment of ADD. Plus a star for the cover art of the Great Sand Dunes which made me a little homesick.

My first thought was oh dear, more generic indie landfill, but on listening a bit closer there's definitely more to it than that. Trouble is it sounds like a demo tape of half finished ideas, needs a bit of editing and expanding on the better tracks.

This was an odd collection of not quite songs but I'm glad I got to see this project once.

Interesting alt rock sound. Enjoyed it

I had this on in the background and the songs were so short it was really hard for me to keep up with coherent thoughts about an individual track before it had already ended, though I did catch the usage of the f slur on the song Hit, which was unfortunate. I liked the overall vibe of it but I'm at a loss for evaluating how worthwhile it was - this sounds like a demo tape to me. Jangly hissy and tinny, which can be good, but the fact that the songs were also so short made it seem unfinished. Almost reminded me of Kurt Vile if he had gone a different way?

Didn’t like the way the album started off at all but the later tracks really caught my attention. A lot of variety here and good energy

Reminds me of McCartney in that it is more of a sketchbook than a proper album. These song fragments sound pretty unfinished to me and though this could be the bands style, the shortness of the songs make my case I think. I’d give a 3.5 if possible but I can’t.

Ok album, lofi, noisy, short, scattered sounds and ideas. Like a less listenable Flaming Lips

Short tracks that do what they need to do. But I do wonder what to make of this album. It all feels a bit like a soup and not a collection of stand out songs.

not bad

very weird

It's good and fun. But everything can't be a 4.

I kinda wish I was introduced to the finer points of lo-fi indie earlier in life, because now it's nearly always jarring to hear music that's deliberately released in an unfinished-sounding state, and recorded by a russet potato. However, I'm pleased to have been misled by this band; Guided by Voices sounds like a culty new-age group, so I'll take the lo-fi indie. Kinda on that note, Alien Lanes sounded fantastic on my portable Bluetooth speaker, whereas other albums I've tried with it sounded terrible (the polyrhythmic Remain in Light and densely-sampled It Takes a Nation of Millions, to name two) Even though the nature of the short tracks means that few had a chance to really make an impression on me before the next one comes blazing in, the overall experience was quite pleasant. It's as though I fell asleep during a Kinks song, and that song kept distorting and permutating throughout the dream, picking up influences from Weezer & Dinosaur Jr along the way. It's neat 👍 and I'll probably enjoy it more with time, once I've processed it a little 3.5 HL: "Watch Me Jumpstart", "Game of Pricks", "Closer You Are", "Motor Away", "Always Crush Me" October 20, 2023

28 tracks in 41 minutes. Excellent. Each one an amuse bouche of early ninties indie, from some that sound like Oasis to some sounding more like Dinosaur Jr. or Nirvana. I like this a lot, though not sure how good it actually is.

Pretty good album, a nice find

I enjoyed this quite a bit. Nothing particularly great about it, I dug the vibe and felt the that short songs really suited it. It's an interesting one because each song in isolation sounds super average and generic. But for me atleast, each song in the context of the album kinda worked. Fav Track: Chicken Blows

Lots of little moments that I’d love, but not many tracks that I thought were amazing, and overall felt just fine rather than a mind blowing record. I know this band has a lot of records, so if this is their best I’m not sure they’ll be my absolutely favourite. Two and a half. Fave track: My Son Cool

3/5 not quite there yet. Had potential

Great low-fi indie album

Starten ligna det på rolig Beatles, ikke dårlig, men litt sånn ripoff

A lot of short songs like you expect to hear on a 1970s punk rock album. The music was pretty good. Nothing really stands out though. 3.5

Short sharp tracks that make the album feel fractured. I found it hard to follow any narrative or theme. Maybe this is one for a second play through to get more out of it.

If this album cover had no words on it and you just showed it to me and asked "You wanna listen to this?" I'd say "Nah, I'm not big on reggae. Thanks, though." Anyway, I love the lofi ethic of GBV, but I have to say that none of this is connecting with me. It's best listened to as if you found a tape on the sidewalk and took it home and this is what was on it. And you'd think "Dang, there's something here." And there is something here, I'm just not sure there's enough of it.

Kinda feels like REM meets The Beatles. I know of this band without knowing them, but what I do know is that they’re supposed to be very enjoyable live. That makes sense after listening to this. So many songs in so little time. I reckon I enjoyed about one quarter of them, which makes me want to just put together a playlist of the choicest nuggets. You’d probably be left with a pretty solid little 20 minute record, which they could bang out live in its entirety twice in one set!

I kinda liked it but then I also kind of didn’t? But then I did again. And then I got bored. And then I liked it again. And then I got distracted and it ended.

I mean I live an album under 45 minutes. And it has nearly 30 songs? Incredible commitment to the bit.

I'm not cool enough to have been into GBV before they broke through, but my brother was and exposed me to a lot of earlier stuff. I have to say it was better. This album seems well along into them basically doing their own shtick. I just don't see it as the "must hear" album of their giant catalog.

Interesting mix. Garage rock, indie rock, jangle pop, and more. Lo-fi recording.

Jai trouvé ca pas mal meilleur que je pensais pour être franc. J'ai aimé le son, genre punk, rock, indie . Ca sonnnait bien. 1995. Ca sonne bien et ca détonne un peu du grunge. 3.5

Sounds like the Beatles trying to play Nirvana. Not bad!

At times a bit boring and uneventful

Thrashy lo-fi indie apparently recorded for next to nothing following a huge advance, it speeds along like a rollercoaster barely taking a pause on tempo or even gaps between songs. A couple of great tracks mixed into what genuinely felt like one single song - yet somehow there are over 20? Probably need to listen to this more intently to pick out the best of it, but it was charming anyway.

I guess you have to play to your strengths. This band's strength seems to be starting writing songs - but not fleshing them out. There really isn't all that much else to say about the band's music. Not bad, very listenable. But really nothing special. An album with 28 songs is likely to have some stinkers like Little Whirl, but there weren't really any positive breakout songs.

Gave me some Elvis Costello vibes at times. It was fine.

Canciones con ritmo, de duración corta, sin nada especial que aportar. Simplemente pasables

I don't even really know what to think of this. Some of it was good, some of it was just noise. It's a cool album though. I'll put it at a three. My favourite songs were Game of Pricks and Always Crush Me.

Endearing LP with a cult status for many fans of indie rock. There's a bunch of cuts that are phenomenal. *Alien Lanes* also has its share of fillers, though, and its atmospheric qualities don't fully make up for them. Guided By Voices have never been interested in self-editing, that's for sure. Which is why I put this album on hold when it comes to give it the "essential" tag. Hope there will be room left for it in my own selection. Not sure there will be though. 3/5 for the purposes of this list, which translates to a 8/10 grade for more general purposes (5+3). Number of albums left to review: less than 500 Number of essential album: half so far. Number of albums I *might* select as such later on: a quarter (including this one) Number of album I won't select: another quarter.

I liked some of this but that song with the snoring was almost enough for me to turn it off.

This was kinda fun! I can get on board with this garage pop punk indie sound. It wasn't super memorable for me as I'm struggling to remember it more specifically, but it was alright.

I think I would have preferred half the songs with twice the material

Really unmemorable.
