Reviews (page 3 of 8)
I am a big fan of Slipknot, and I've listened to this album countless times. Personally, I think it's one of my least favorite albums of theirs. Although there are some really great songs on this one, in previous listens I would skip around to them instead of listening to the whole thing. I'm happy to see them on the list.
Don't like slipknot as much as a lot of people but can't deny the greatness of this record. Should probably give this one a listen tonight.
Banger. I love metal, never cared too much for slipknot, but this is solid.
I wrote slipknot off for a long time. album is good.
Genuinely good, and better than their debut album. I will admit that some of the lyrics made me cringe a bit, but still not a bad album. Fave track(s): Sulfur, Psychosocial, Gehenna
Better than I expected. Slipknot are well versed in the various styles of metal and employ them throughout so that it becomes impossible to pigeonhole them as nu metal or groove metal. There’s a lot of black metal influences as well as some punk, hardcore, and thrash metal thrown in for good measure. The subject matter of the album, very critical of the United States at a time when the economy was collapsing, fits the punk ethos well and certainly deserves the darker edge that the black metal influence lends it.
Here we go... a bit of Slipknot. Maybe not their best album but still an impressive collection of songs and sounds. The record clangs and chuggs and powers its way through its tracklist as you'd expect and I think Corey Taylor is on absolute top form here, as can be heard on the amazing Psychosocial, going from screaming to this lush singing without seemingly any effort at all. Mick Gordons guitar tone on this record is similarly amazing always keeping the record sounding heavy but never overpowering everything else going on. Not to mention Joey Jordison's drumming which really got Slipknot where they are if you ask me, so dense and maximalist but it still sounds really good and the little cymbal flourishes and bell type sounds really offset how intense a lot of the double bass drum work is, also the snare sound is so finley crafted its quite impressive. Does it have the most hits on it? no is it as good as Iowa? no but its got its own style and personality and I love it.
It's not really as inventive as the critics claim it is. It's still the usual Slipknot. Same tricks. same themes, same sounds. But I do appreciate how well-produced and organized this is. Love it or hate it, this is Slipknot at their best, imo.
Slipknot is a heavy metal band from Iowa. Fronted by Corey Taylor, who has also had some solo stuff and sang with the band Stone Sour as well. He also has had acting gigs, and has turned his hand to writing as well. Helluva talented guy! I can distinctly remember when their self titled debut album came out in 1999. I recall seeing the music video for Wait and Bleed, as well as interviews with a few of the lads on Much Music and thinking, "what the fuck am I looking at". 1999 was the time when nu metal was huge, and acts like Limp Bizkit, Korn, and Linkin Park were getting started. Slipknot exploded on the scene with a much heavier, faster, more raw sound, and all the dudes in the band wore spooky masks, which they switched out for each album release. These guys took their chance and ran with it, and were, and continue to be insanely popular, headlining their own yearly festival of hard rock/metal (Knotfest) and putting on the craziest live shows ever! It is a sonic experience to say the least. This was the last album for original drummer Joey Jordison before he had to leave the band because of a form of MS that he was battling which prevented him from playing his instrument any more. In his heyday he was one hell of a drummer, with his machine gun kick drum, and insanely technical drum beats. RIP Joey, you are truly missed. Overall, a great listen today! I recall the first time I heard the song Snuff, it blew my mind. That was the first time I heard Corey's more intimate singing voice. It is so beautiful alongside his raw, gutteral screaming voice. This is a hell of a talented band, and a great bunch of guys! Favourite songs : Snuff, Psychosocial, This Cold Black, Sulfur, Gematria (the Killing Name), Dead Memories, All Hope Is Gone Least favourite song: Vermilion Pt. 2 - Bloodstone Mix, Gehenna, Butcher's Hook 4/5
I expected to not love but it was gas
I had never listened to a Slipknot album before, and this seems like the perfect place to start! Great metal record, with plenty of contrast and interesting compositions to keep the listener engaged!
I quite liked this album. Of course, I wasn't as awed by it as little, 13-year old me was by its predecessor, Vol.3 when that came out (before I disowned it as "not serious metal" -ahem), but I quite liked it. I especially enjoyed the accomplished blend of quick and dirty but technical modern thrash metal and the softer touches such as in Vendetta - but not the actual ballads that bog down the second half of the album.
Good solid album
intense! Bon!
banger best of slipknot great range, nice change of pace
Welp, the time has finally come. I'm a native Iowan and have made it this far without ever listening to a Slipknot album, and that streak ends today. One of the benefits of listening to albums on this list is that I can hear a lot of Slipknot's influences in their music. It's easy to see how this band was influenced by earlier metal bands like Slayer, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Nine Inch Nails, and Pantera. Overall, the production really stands out on this album. While I don't always love the music and (especially) the lyrics, the album is undeniably well put together. Great production makes it a lot easier to appreciate a band that I've always thought of as deeply unserious because of the stupid mask thing. And honestly, as bad as a lot of metal was in the first decade of the 2000s, this album is worth listening to. Lots a variation in the style keeps it interesting 4/5
Good album but not the best
* It's slipknot, yes it will be hard&heavy, lyrics will deal with selfloathing, the failure of society, mental issues, and a lot of agression throughout. This album has to follow on their massive success Vol3:The Subliminal Verses 4 years earlier, while still delivering something new to keep inventing themselves. Vol3 had pushed them somewhat more visible towards the mainstream at that point and also influenced their songwriting to a certain degree from what it seems on AHIG. You can find callbacks to Vol3 in the special edition, with the Track 14, Vermillion Pt.2 remix, but other than that the base disc it is an hour of angry fresh fun. Few songs on this album truly stand out and linger for a while, but it all comes together nicely. Guitar, Bass and Drum work on this album are pristine, and it is the last album that Paul Gray took part in before passing in 2010, RiP. It is also the last full release album with Joey Jordison on the drums, and after listening to it again it seems like a fine send-off and something they both had a lot of fun and space to creatively explore on. Snuff is on another level, an excursion towards the more calm songwriting that parts of the band do in their project Stone Sour, but still finding a way back to the core of what makes Slipknot Slipknot. It might first remind you of Vermillion Pt1&2 on Vol3, but then goes into a more open space and unfolds brilliantly. It is distinctly different and in a good way. If you always thought "oh, Slipknot, isnt that the angry mask people constantly screaming and being loud?", this is a track that should show you a more "digestible" version while still keeping with the theme they usually follow. Honorable mentions: Sulfur, Psychosocial, All Hope is Gone. Best on the album: see above, Snuff. 8.5/10. It's not their best, and not the album I would show anyone as the definitive Slipknot record, but it is very good.
So good
Great. High school vibes. Psychosocial and Snuff are standouts
It's far from their best and I'm surprised it made it onto the list to be honest
Not my usual go-to but this was solid throughout and had some moments that caught my ear
You can always count on Slipknot for some good heavy metal thrash about. Having had listened to this album years ago, I didn't realise how hefty it was, coming in at 72 minutes (for what was the deluxe edition on release) - you're definitely in it for the long haul. The drill-like drumming, heavy distorted guitar riffs and the distinct vocals of Corey Taylor make it a great album in the most part. The latter portion of the album lags a little and lets it down - only slightly. Best: Sulfur Worst: Snuff
-"Psychosocial" is definitely a strong track, a good mix of the blast-beat style metal and more conventional metal sections -"Dead Memories" and "Vendetta" are both very nice and heavy without being goop. Having it not be entirely blast-beat-y full boar actually comes across as heavier for me because it is clearer to me -The big drum fill to guitar solo in "All Hope Is Gone" is pretty sweet. Probably my favorite musical moment in the album. Sadly the rest of the song is kind of goopy -Luckily most of the album has a good balance of not turning into goop. Just the first two tracks were goopy for me -Not my main metal genre, but pretty much all the songs has a fun riff or vocal melody or something to grab into to make the song interesting -goop
*clutches pearls* The music is certainly very appropriate to the lyrical sentiments, and I can relate to the rage on display here. This is probably the right tone to take. The pessimistic sentiments are certainly something I can relate to. The anger. The screaming. It's a lot. But then again so is the world... I wasn't sure I could do any of this, but then "Sulfur" came on and I was able to muster up enough rage to appreciate it. These guys are really good... and really angry... "Psychosocial" starts and... I think I like it! The choruses sound a bit like the Foo Fighters. The musicianship is very high. This is a real surprise to me. As the album progressed, my brain started to dig it. Even the screaming. These guys are great musicians though and seem to know how to modulate the rage and have the musical chops to keep things interesting. What is happening?! Did I really just add this album to my library?! I have the feeling that had I listened to this in my teens or twenties I would have hated it, but now at 54 I'm kind of into it? I didn't think that's how it was supposed to work... ALL HOPE IS GONE is a cathartic and... fun?!... to listen. Like a scary roller coaster, I won't be riding it every day but I'll jump on this ride again. This is one pissed off album I'm apparently pissed off enough to be on board with it. Really a 3.5 in my mind but rounding up since this far exceeded expectations.
Definitely a mood. I found it a pretty melodic approach to heavy metal. Interesting enough to listen again, though on the long side. Percussion is crazy.
just from hearing .execute. i know i’m gonna love it gematria<3 liked the switch up in sulphur really like psychosocial vibes
Kind of really into this, especially the parts with more melodic vocals.
The slow pace songs were a welcome respite from the heavier stuff. Decent.
Never listened to Slipknot, really liked this album overall
One of those bands I have never listened to but was on my bucketlist. For a non-metal fan, it's pretty decent listen. Has some good songs and a bit of variety. Although only Psychosocial and a couple of the slower songs stood out, pretty good ride overall.
I did not appreciate this album enough when it came out, because it's awesome. Every bit as good as their previous releases.
That's some good timin rock em roll
suprisingly very political songs in a genre that might initially be offputting, turns out to be a great album with some musical diversity
I did enjoy the inclusion of the more thrash metal sound in this album and it has some great songs it also has some meh songs. I kinda look the chaos Iowa a bit more.
Gran trabajo.
Metal con algunas canciones que parecen baladas. Está bien. Un 4.
Ruthless and skillful
Slipknot rules. Take that liberals!!1!
This might be the "best" Slipknot album, but it isn't my favorite. Also, I acknowledge I am too old to like Slipknot as much as I do.
Not the best SK album but still a big fan
Nice metal album overall. Some really good songs like "Psychosocial" and "Snuff". Though also some boring ones which can drag a bit.
Slipknot is definitely up my alley when they take a more laidback and groove approach, but I think when their death metal roots show up I start to flinch a bit. That being said, still very much so an enjoyable album, at a sturdy high 4.
Heavy . Algunas canciones muy brutas, pero muy bueno.
Five star start that tapers out to a solid four by the end. Big fat fricken riffs at the start, wish they were maintained the whole way through. Pretty weak finish could've been 20 minutes shorter
After my ears stopped bleeding I realized I was tapping my toes and enjoying the music. Much better than I thought it would be. Not something I would listen to ever day.
Really enjoyed the musicality, not the vocals so much. Why so angry?
I remember my muso mates turning their noses up when they saw my copy of "Iowa." They were wrong. "All Hope is Gone" is better than "Iowa;" less childish and more range. What sets Slipknot apart is the contrast between the crunching, wall-of-sound death metal and the smoother, more melodic elements. A bit corny and overlong, but enjoyable nonetheless.
I didn't know they had an emo album. I'm happier now I do know.
Big mood. Big energy.
Slipknot were a early teenage favourite of mine but I've not listened to this album through. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. A bit of a different direction for Slipknot. A few songs too long or it would have been a 5.
Manages to be good and terrible interchangeably and within seconds of each other. I imagine this is what happens when an angry teenager with an unhealthy love of knives goes on work experience with a marketing executive at a record label.
Probably the biggest surprise I’ve had on this group. Guitars and drums are brilliant.
Great production and packed with head bangers. Goes a bit limp in the back end but still a great metal template.
I normally listen to these first thing in the morning, but I just really don't feel like Slipknot at 5am. I'll listen later at work. I've heard the album before anyway. Ok: this album has some absolutely amazing tracks but falls short of a 5. I'd give it a 4.5 if I could. Only criticism is that it goes a bit too long and loses steam towards the end. Definitely Slipknot at their best though. Surely no matter what kind of music you prefer, Pyschosocial makes you tap your foot. 4/5.
Besser als gedacht
hmmm
one of their best
Not my favorite Slipknot album, but still really solid. I feel like it fades towards the end, though.
nicht mein Sound, aber trotzdem irgendwie geil.
Dedo no cu e gritaria (no cu de quem ta lendo)
Not bad for metal. I'd listen again.
cool
I have been listening to Slipknot for years but have never actually sat and listened to an album in full. The Opening track '.Execute.' consists of Mr. Taylor screaming 'All Hope Is Gone' and it set the tone for the album. The whole band did fantastically with their instruments and Corey's vocals are stronger than ever here. My favourite tracks on the album are: Sulfur. Psychosocial. Dead Memories. Snuff. Sulfur is one of my favourite Slipknot songs. Psychosocial hits HARD. Dead Memories is a great track. Snuff is an emotional standout track. A beautiful calm in the middle of a violent, angry storm.
Pretty groovy metal album, 7/10
YES! Love this band. More familiar with more recent stuff, but this ROCKS
Didn’t really think I’d like it all that much. I was wrong.
No pues está chingón.
Not a bad slipknot album but I still prefer their debut
Not all...some hope is gone.
Not their best but a solid sendoff for Joey.
Okay I in theory should hate this, and I certainly don't love this, but I appreciate the album having its softer moments as well. I think my age helps, people I knew were listening to this growing up and I have a soft spot for emo music and pop punk. I'd rather not listen again but it had its moments
Intense instrumentation and lyrics that sound like a bad trip, didn’t mind it but not fully my thing.
I don't care for metal largely. I love individual metal tracks and I love old punk and industrial and I'm a huge Mr. bungle fan...can't say why metal never clicked for me. Still, this is a complete album of its genre and it's clearly well-executed.
Favourite Songs: Sulfur
The first five or so songs were really good, but then it started to drag.
.Execute. - 2.5/5 Gematria (The Killing Name) - 3.5/5 Sulfur - 4/5 Psychosocial - 4.5/5 Dead Memories - 4/5 Vendetta - 3/5 Butcher's Hook - 2.5/5 Gehenna - 3/5 This Cold Black - 3/5 Wherein Lies Continue - 3/5 Snuff - 3.5/5 All Hope Is Gone - 3.5/5 For someone who has no idea what metal is all about, this might be a decent introductory album. But it's pretty meh all around besides a few tracks. And to boot, it's not even part of what their fans say their best albums are. The book got the self-titled right, but this should have been Iowa over what many of the band members said was their least favorite album. Either that or just replace it for an album more worthy. Do we really need a nu metal album from 2008? Overall: 3/5 Favorites: Psychosocial, Sulfur, Dead Memories
The drumming was fantastic. The music was alright, but the singing didn't seemed to fit or just took me out sometimes.
Surprisingly bopping rhythms for heavy metal
Kind of thrashy, occasionally industrial, sometimes heartfelt—another ‘00s classic.
I really have no idea why this album is on the list, and that's coming from a Slipknot fan. The debut, yes, absolutely. But they have at least two other albums that deserve to be here far more than this one. All Hope Is Gone is okay, because it's Slipknot and I'm always gonna at least kind of enjoy what they do. Why not Iowa? That's even darker and moodier than the debut, but it's still just as fierce and violent. Why not Vol. 3? It has the band's biggest hit, it incorporated more soft rock elements, and it's actually remarkable lyrically because it was an attempt to make an album with zero cursing. Why /this/ of all things? In the context of Slipknot's discography, this is very unremarkable.
Not my thing, but there is more going on with the lyrics than I expected. This is an album I can only listen to in small doses, but I can hear why it might appeal to some.
Slipknot make a groove metal album...and it actually works? Favorite track: Psychosocial
It was alright, but not my cup of tea
Good album. Very melodic kinda of metal
Not nearly as annoying as I thought it would be.
Metal. Thought it was pretty decent until the very last song, which was awful.
Admittedly I did not bother (I've heard this) 2.5
Mostly I don't like nu metal. Even if slipknot was the band who take me to the world of metal, i feel is pretty soft to me. I don't really listened seriously slipknot projects besides their first album. I gotta say the album has some great moments, i feel that there's no correlation between the first four songs and the rest of the album. 5/10 I wouldn't listen to it again
This is not really my scene, but I managed to get through it. There is a bit going on here, but it can be hard to find under the pummelling drums which seem to permeate every track. The lyrics are surprising well heard, but it's the usual disaffection and anger directed at various things. It gets a bit wearing at times, and the songs do seem to linger on for longer than they really need. Probably good if you like that sort of thing, but not a lot here for me.
We're the slipnutz, slipping on nuts, clowning around, and slipping on nuts. We're the slipnutz, slipping on nuts. Whoops he fell down: "I slipped on some nuts"
Ok for what it is. Not exactly my thing most days.
Hard to rate this because I appreciate that there's metal on this list at all but really? Slipknot's definitely aged better than most big metal bands of the 2000s but that's not saying a whole lot. The weird, screaming, dirty-but-not-death vocals just come across as something only wannabe tough guys and edgy 14 year olds would be impressed by, and the clean singing is extremely emo_spongebob.jpg. That being said, I did really enjoy some of the heavier songs on here and could get into the groove of it as long as I ignored the goofy-ass vocals. But mostly I was just reminded of other, better, metal bands I could be listening to instead. It's the musical equivalent of getting blue balled. (I'm still butthurt that there's no Death on this list)
Their lyrics sometimes felt overly direct and seemed aimed at teenagers, but they often seem underestimated as players, especially considering the precision and intensity of the performances. Psychosocial was my favorite track, mainly because of its massive guitar riff and the almost inhuman drumming.
I remember finding Slipknot rather juvenile and silly when they first dropped, but then again I was a Metal DJ and obliged to play the odd song. But I didn't actually listen to a complete album. I wasn't aware this one was highly regarded. Currently the top rated review for this album is a 1 star review which claims that if you like this type of music you must have some personal problems. Tongue in cheek, but the typical snivelling nonsense Metal fans put up with. Then again, said reviewer has Country as their favourite genre and is a self-avowed 'huge Kanye West', which says enough about their own mental state and opinions that their review - and all their reviews, must be dismissed. Furthermore, they are listed as Journey Complete when they have reviewed less than 200 albums, which strongly suggest they are a coward. Onto the album itself. It's exactly what you expect a Slipknot album to be.
It’s certainly better than the Korn album. Obviously talented musicians, even with it not quite being my genre. Surprised at how smooth the singer’s vocals can be - he’s a legitimately good vocalist overall. This is an album I can certainly appreciate, and don’t hold any ill will toward, but over an hour of this was trying and it often got just lost in the noise so to speak. The random emo-esque song was rather surprising as well.
I was psyched to find the self titled on here a week or so ago as it was a regular play for me growing up but this one was just okay… some of the slowed down stuff was well done but not sure I expected another on the list (or that it needed another)
Def some catchy riffs in here, but it’s all screaming and I’m too old for that now. And for some of these lyrics.
An interesting choice to put on here. I’m not gonna say it outright shouldn’t go here, because in a vacuum there’s some well-produced songs on here. But this isn’t nearly as good as their self titled debut, it’s clear the phenomena of the masks and the bands general high-profile aesthetics carried them as far as having two album on this list. This is way more political than their last offering I heard, but offers nothing more specific than broad strokes about America having imperialistic tendencies. What really took me by surprise was Corey Taylor singing in a melodic, relatively 'normal' singing voice. He isn't half bad, at least no worse than the Shinedown's or Foo Fighters of the time. It was so strange hearing him just *sing* on "Psychosocial". I liked that the band doubled down on the normal singing and abandonment of nu-metal on "Dead Memories", especially the quiet bridge around 3:10 in the song. I'm sure many Slipknot loyalist saw this as selling out. "Snuff" does what I've begged a lot of metal records to do, which is to actually build a song around a melody and not around a thrashy 4-minute sprint of noise and energy. Is this song a little cheesy? Yeah, it's got shades of "Face Down" by Red Jumpsuit. But it's not bad! The last two songs also bring things back down to earth. There's a happy amount of variety on here. That's all I could really ask for. Let's say 3/5
Not as bad as I thought it would be back in the day when I skipped them in favor of other metal styles. They have an emo flavour to them that doesn’t really fit the masked gimmick and I think the extra percussionist is a little unnecessary. I liked Corey Taylor better in Stone Sour. Always liked Before I Forget though Rip joey
Powerful yet often incoherent. It has some great bits spread around. 6/10
Definitely very boring but I'm not gonna pretend like there ain't bangers here, Sulfur, Psychosocial, Dead Memories, Snuff, the title track. There is good stuff here but it goes on a little long
I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. My typical reaction to metal is that I enjoy the instrumentation but don't like the singing. Slipknot seems to blend a little more rock into their metal, giving their songs more recognizable hooks. Overall- decent. Definitely a vibe
Accessable metal (that's a good thing). Metal snobs hate this band, but I think they need to chill out and allow Slipknot to bring in new fans to harder rock genres. Especially with this album, which is much more pop metal than previous stuff I've heard.
Liked it more than I thought I would. Given the visage of the band I was expecting something much more aggressive.
I liked the songs without the screamo singing
I think I could PB to this. 🏃♂️
n é mt meu estilo mas consigo entender pq é icônico
Surprisingly decent, enjoyed it more than I would most metal albums, still at best a 3.5
That’s music for Nan’s birthday sorted! I quite liked the songs individually but as a whole album, it blurs into one. Thought that the bonus tracks would have been a decent addition to the actual album as they were chiller and would have broken it up a bit.
Death metal is also not for me, 3.7 perhaps
This is good thrash/groove metal. Vast improvement on their early 'throw everything at the wall' style nu metal.
I just know my older cousin loved slipknot when he was a teenager. I can’t help but hear this album and think “huh… so that was the kind of shit he was listening to…”
not really my cup of tea; i think the group overall is interesting but too loud for me now
Did not think I would enjoy this as much as I did.
There’s a couple of decent songs here, but it really did feel like they gave up at a certain point. Some production choices didn’t make much sense to me, and a lot of riffs felt kind of random and not really catchy. I still think this album is fine, mainly because Gematria, Psychosocial, and Snuff are quite good, in my opinion. It wasn’t boring or anything, just not that exciting either.
These guys are clearly talented af, but its not my type of music.
Slipknot always surprises me. They're scary, but also pretty standard metal. I forget that the costumes are just a gimmick. This was a quality metal album and I'm not scared anymore.
It doesn't hold a candle to the self-titled debut, but what does? In a vacuum though, it's decent 'groove metal'...feel like they said all they had to say with their first couple of albums. Nothing super special here to me.
There are two Slipknot albums I would put on here before this one, maybe even three. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5
I like the odd Slipknot track when their slow and atmospheric (such as Prelude 3.0, Danger, Keep Away from the album before this one). Their classic heavy ragers aren't for me. So I liked Dead Memories and Snuff precisely because they didn't really sound like Slipknot. The drumming was pretty good so I'll give it another star for that.
Svært formativt album for min del, Psychosocial definerte 2008 for meg.
Had this one already. 😩
I don't care for screaming vocals, but the music here and non screaming vocals are better than I expected
This is an art in its form , very hard and very tough music not for all tastes though , however unique
I made a mistake and listened their debut album. I like that one much more. All hope is gone is really good, more guitar forward and loses some of the aggression of some of the earlier stuff
Not bad.
ok hart, c
I think the only song I've heard from them before is Psychosocial, way more cheesy nu metal than I realised. Not really a group for me but it's a good album, I could appreciate it more than enjoy it. Wouldn't scoff at another album but not gonna seek them out.
More variety than expected. Still not my sound.
I was today years old when I learned I don't hate Slipknot. I remember being so annoyed with them back in the day, but I guess tastes change as time passes.
Decent album.
This album felt cut in two, the first part was rawer and more energetic and the second part felt more commercial. Overall quite allright 3/5
Listening to this, I am sad that my 14 year old self never got into Slipknot - I'm sure I would have loved it. I went into this with some false assumptions about the style of music, and with fear that I may not last the full 72 minutes of this album. Whilst I didn't particularly love the last three songs and by that point I was willing it to end, I really enjoyed the rest of the album to my surprise. There are so many great hard hitting tracks on this thing. The drums and guitars sound fantastic, even though I wasn't completely on board with some of the vocals; they just felt a little out of place. Favourites: Gematria Vendetta This Cold Black All Hope Is Gone
I’m going to commit a critical faux pas by assuming and inventing a person to get mad at. However, all I could picture during the track Gematria was someone completely missing the point of the song, which is a pretty obvious condemnation of America’s imperial wars especially the war on terror. But because it also makes America seem like a monster who destroys things I feel like there is absolutely a guy who listened to this song and was stroking himself to it while he blew up schools and hospitals and stuff. Anyway. Slipknot is always better and worse than I expect. I both wish and don’t wish they were more hardcore.
I liked this better than I thought I would. I still found the combination of heavy metal with sort of Nickelback sounding rock a little jarring. It was best when the stuck to fast drums and guitar with growls.
For a Slipknot album I expected it to be harsher than it actually was. Surprisingly a fun background listen to work, the instrumentals do a lot of heavy lifting here. Wasn't ever a fan of screamo vocals, but I can live with it.
Stream of consciousness: This is... LOUD The drums are making me anxious "I could take it, or leave it, or DIE!!" lol I don't understand most of the lyrics, but the overall emotion is LOUD and CLEAR... anger, frustration, aggression, sadness My shoulders are clenched, tight Second listen and this is kind of growing on me – SURPRISING! Idk if I’d reach for it, but I’m enjoying it more than other records on the list. The variety of vocals is reeling me in; digging the mix between guttural yelling, lighter moments of singing, and deeper angsty singing. Fav track: Snuff
I was prepared for this to be an awful experience based on some reviews here and only having the cartoonish images of Slipknot as my knowledge of the band. I'm not going to go out of my way to find more Slipknot, but it was not at all awful. And kind of pretty rad at times, specifically on the front half of the album. Silly and juvenile for sure but those drums and some of that riffage is undeniable.
Stevig, maar nog melodieus 3,5
Good to try out, all a bit too same-y to me in the end
This album is definitely when Slipknot shifted from their initial nu-metal sound to a more conventional form of the genre. It’s so tight on production though, and more melodic. I love it, so many memories of being called a mosher/goth/emo by the older kids on my bus to school for listening to it.
To be Slipknot, it's a good album
I guess I’m more of a fan of metal than I thought I was.
Tight band, good vocals. Thought i would hate it as not my type of music but quite enjoyed it
I avoided nu metal the best I could in the aughties and I don't think I ever heard Slipknot before. So I was pleasantly surprised to encounter that 'Hope' is a little more thrash instead. Some tracks with tight frenetic drums, with heavy politics and guitar, so I imagined being somewhere between Pantera and Rage Against the Machine. But there was plenty of radio friendly smooth metal grooves leftover.
Great music to listen to at the gym. Great drums, not great for really anything else
Not confident I will get thru all this 😆 I know a couple songs. We will see.
Let’s get into some controversy! This is by far Slipknot‘s best album. It’s aggressive; it’s extremely well produced; it’s a little more mainstream and even has sensitive bits (Snuff). But for all of those reasons, I’m not sure we need three Slipknot albums on the 1001. Hands-down, this is my favorite Slipknot album . However, it also lacks a lot of the ground breaking energy and raw aggression that the previous two albums had which makes it more mainstream and loses its uniqueness. Gematria is a hell of an opener. Psychosocial is a radio favorite. Dead Memories slowed the album down while still grinding, and then Vendetta and Butchers Hook come back, screaming with Joey Jordison‘s legendary drumming. The more I write about it the more conflicted I am. I love this album but there’s too many on the list. Which do we kick off? The solution: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and/or 69 Love songs. Just a suggestion…
Random thoughts: * Again I am out of my element on reviewing Slipknot. * I'm not sure that 2 Slipknot albums on this list are necessary. * I would say I liked the previous entry better but I definitely listened better to the first album entry. * Anyway, someday when I fully go off the deep end and go completely rogue, I'll make this and every other metal album on this list my new soundtrack.
Očekivala sam teško smeće iskreno. I onda me dočekao skroz ok album.
Definitely some parts of this album that I like, but it's held back by my dislike of the vocalist and some very odd diversions into emo territory. Favorite Tracks: "Psychosocial", "Gehenna", "All Hope is Gone" Least Favorite Track: "Snuff" Mid 3.
Decent enough to be somewhat enjoyable despite a headache
I liked this better than I expected. Good mix of harsh and clean vocals. Liked the percussion. Overall actually pretty good.
Litt koselig gjenlytt. Føle stemningen speila godt kordan eg følte meg mens eg mekka infrastruktur-configs til appen min
I mean, not my thing. Trying not to trash albums just because they're not my thing. This is really quite solid at doing what it's trying to do. It's not nearly as hard to listen to as a lot of other albums of its type. The playing is really solid. Very good metal guitar and some solid melodies here and there (I can't connect with the rapid kick drum shit and never will). So, not my thing, but it had some surprises and it's good for what it is.
Overall, this was better than I expected it to be, and I really liked the contrast between the quieter and louder tracks. The lyrics are maybe a bit simple, a trend I have noticed in a lot of metal, but I also recognize that the lyrics are just part of the picture- the expression of frustrations through distorted guitars and banging drums and high tempo is maybe the more important element. Favorite track: probably "Snuff"
The drumming doesn't deserve these shitty edgelord lyrics, which is often the case with Slipknot.
Slipknot is overrated imo, i found this kinda mid, nothing rly stood out for me 6/10
Rating: 6.5/10 Starts off and finishes great, the middle portion of this album sucks.
Ordentlicher intensiver Metal, nicht schlecht.
Nice and hard; close to that edge of off-putting guttural screaming I don't like...but not quite over.
Good album! Not my favorite genre, but I really enjoyed some of it and some of it I did not care for.
Some parts were good
The brutal, blast beating hardcore side of this blast rules and is a strong 4. The histronic bleating emo side of this album stinks and is a weak 2. So we'll split the difference and call it a 3.
i’d hate to say this but i’m not really fond of this album, i’ve listened to slipknot before and i loved their music but i don’t know about this album. i can see why people like this album but im not saying its bad. there is songs that stand out to me like snuff, gehenna, psychosocial, sulfur and gematria. A whole entire hour is slipknot sounds epic but maybe i gotta relisten to it, ill definitely revisit this album soon. I do like the rough and grittiness of this album though, and snuff is a really great song.
i'm still trying to figure out what kind of metal i like but i enjoyed this way more than i thought i would!
This was alright. Slipknot is not really my kind of music but at least some of these tracks had vocals that are sung rather than roared. I also liked the drumming especially
The first album will always be my favorite because it’s near insanity. It sounds like the band will fall apart at any moment. This album is good but kinda boring. I know people love them but it sounds like a metal formula without the crazy diverse sounds of the first record. Musician wise these guys are all top notch players.
I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would
I am a metal fan but Slipknot falls into a camp of bands that I have never been able to fully get into because of the vocals. Favorite song on here was Snuff because it was the least guttural. It’s not bad but I also don’t think it’s a seminal piece in this genre or even sub genre.
I'm giving this album an extra star for the drums/percussion alone because they are fantastic. Otherwise, this is a long, painful slog of an album. Yes, we get how terrible the world is, how horrible life is, etc. But it is redeemed by actual singing on many songs and even a semi-ballad to break the monotony. And did I mention the drumming?
Not nearly as bad as I expected. Lyrically its not at all what I'd call good, and often can be very stupid, but does anyone really listen to this stuff for how good the lyrics are? Gotta admire the musicality, there's real talent here, especially percussion-wise - the drumming on title track is insane. Definitely over the top and I'm never gonna love Slipknot, but it has its moments.
Great album
Favorite Track: Sulfur
I was baking and (screaming voice)ALL THE COOKIES BURNED! (growls) THEY WERE DEEEEELICIOUS (harmony voices). (Lead guitar) Won't give up my cookies. No. No. No. No. I look forward to making cheesecake next with armageddon cellos.
Way better than I thought. Actually a fair degree of musicality there, sort of listenable and foot tapping in parts. If I would have encountered it at 14 it would be a different story, tougher sell at 51.
Aggressive. Right off the bat I don't really like the double pedal kick drum sound. I know it's popular in this genre... but I get tired of it. The music is great... the singing is great. The slower songs are good. I know Corey Taylor is considered a vocal god. I liked the change in vocals in the middle of songs. I thought of Mike Patton who actually is a vocal god and how this has some similarities from growling to softer singing. I did like Snuff quite a bit... probably because it was a slower ballad type song. Not being able to understand the lyrics makes me less of a fan right away... maybe with additional listens I'll grow to like the songs more with knowledge of the lyrics. My first listen was at 6am in the dark driving in a rain storm. Setting seemed appropriate for this music.
Good metal album but not great
I enjoyed this one but I get the criticism. It’s not metal for the hardcore fans but to me they’re fun enough.
The fact that I like metal at all is entirely due to the fact that my high school girlfriend was into it. She’s now my wife, and even though I will independently play Metallica or Tool, it all still feels like I borrowed it from her CD collection. And she *hates* Slipknot. So this is not my scene. But approaching it with fresh ears, I can see why someone might like it. There are certainly days I feel the feelings expressed in “Gematria” or “Dead Memories.” Overall, though, this kind of metal feels kind of tedious to me… oh, you are going to do that with the drums *again?* I hope it’s helping some kids get by somewhere, but I’ll stick with my wife’s CD binder.
Mixed feelings on this one. I already knew a few songs, so based off them I expected more. Was pretty boring though in parts 3 ⭐️
not really sure why the book author chose this Slipknot album to be included on this list. The Debut absolutely belongs; it was a great experiment in blending the Nu-Metal and industrial metal movements of the late 90s and early 2000s. This album, however isn't their best. You can really hear how Taylor's focus is torn between Slipknot and Stone Sour, creating a weird mix of emo singing on industrial riffs. 3.0 would have been better to include.
Honestly surprised. I was dreading this one, fearing it would be like last week's offering, but there is a surprising amount of subtlety and nuance for the genre. And there's a straight ballad, which earns a star by itself.
fine 3
I like a fair amount of heavy music, but generally not Nu Metal. I actually liked this, but will probably not come back to it.
This album started off strong but veered off towards the latter part. The metal hits hard especially with the insane drumming but I really dislike the experimental stuff in the latter part. It seems painfully angsty like a hormonal teenager staring in a mirror holding a flame from a lighter with lights off.
I love some Slipknot, but this wasn't it for me.
I deliberately waited to listen to this album until my girlfriend wasn't home since she would loose her minde if I served her one hour of slipknot. While I was not excited to dive into it, since it is also not really my thing, the album surprised me with some stellar musicianship. Like these guys can play, for sure. Still one hour is a longtime for energetic screaming.
finally leaving many of the nu metal trappings behind, this is when slipknot takes off (if you're into things like slipknot)
I didn't dislike this, but I do find it to be both too dense sonically and too 2000's-angsty to casually listen to.
I liked this more than I expected to. It feels kind of like a parody of metal at times, but there is truly some excellent drumming at least.
This is a pretty good record. This is their "growth" record where they veer away from nu-metal. The songs are pretty good. I'm not sure it's the record to make someone a fan, but it is a good listen. The song "Snuff" is perhaps the best song they've ever done.
Repeat listen
It's Slipknot; heavy metal, thrashing with lyrics littered with juvenile angst. As always, the drumming is top tier. Favorite Track: "Snuff".
Maybe a bit much to listen to all at once
Oof I don't like heavy metal
Well, i tried listening to the album, but it was too intense for me. i can definitely see why they’re so popular, but i wasn’t at the right state of mind to listen more
the metal screaming is very annoying, but the songs themselves are mostly quite cool. Love the driving bass/drum sections, cool guitar solos. Overall not my favourite album, but on average a solid 3 stars
Great Songs: Psychosocial, Vendetta Good Songs: .Execute., Gematria (The Killing Name), Sulfur, Butcher's Hook, Wherein Lies Continue, Snuff, All Hope Is Gone Mid Songs: Dead Memories, Gehenna, This Cold Black Bad Songs:
Carai, vai ser nostálgico isso aqui. Não costumo ouvir Slipknot normalmente, mas foi um dos principais sons da minha juventude. Primeira música me lembra Metallica + Abertura de Pokémon. Resto do álbum é a energia clássica, mas nada me chamou atenção.
I was expecting worse tbf - the song snuff was a nice surprise too
I really enjoyed listening to them becouse i was cleaning my room. They are full of energy with strong beat so it was easier to find a rhytm . Maybe metal isnt my favourite genre but for sure i will come back to them . ;3
The screaming, angry songs were hard to listen to, but the other songs with actual singing were good. I liked his voice.
dem farm boys are up to something
its is a good album. main issue is the double bass drum pedal sounds fucking shit, and tends to ruin the songs. Psychosocial always goes hard. As with most metal stuff, i tend to get a bit bored of it half way through.
Enjoyed this more than I expected to, given that my initial thoughts were that it was going to be a headache-inducing effort. Musically quite impressive, a bunch of shouty nonsense mixed in with some rather good songs. Standout tracks are Sulfur, Dead Memories and Snuff. Was teetering on 2.5 but I'll give it a low 3/5
Would go 3.5 if I could. Incredible musicianship bogged down by lyricism that feels juvenile at many points.
fun to listen to Slipknot. But this feels a bit more polished than previous albums in a bad way, and a few themes are recycled. I liked some of the sound design, atmospheric ideas that helped make it feel more like an album than just a bunch of songs
Day671 - corey taylor is a great singer and this album was a little more digestible than their debut album
I mean its slipknot 🤷 I usually listen to my daily album at work, and Slipknot isn't my first choice for working music exactly 😅 I had a metal phase when i was 18, and i can enjoy some metal, but i rarely seek it out on my own volition.
Not the finest Slipknot album, but some absolute bangers and mash on here, and I was fortunate enough to catch the tour and they certainly delivered the goods live!
I’m not a Slipknot fan, but I gave this album a full listen — mostly out of morbid curiosity. It wasn’t quite the unholy assault I expected, but it still felt like getting yelled at by a haunted toolbox for an hour. There are flashes of talent buried under the noise, but blink and you’ll miss ’em. I can respect the energy, I just don’t want it anywhere near my car speakers again. Not awful, but I’m definitely scheduling quiet time afterward.
107/1089 i’m not a metalhead but this was actually a pretty good listen overall, some bits were a bit harsh and too much for me though. I had already heard a couple songs, so it was good to have some expectations set (unlike with Pantera which I had the other day) i may not listen to this album again but i did add a few songs to my playlist for this project. these being: Snuff, Child of Burning Time, ‘Til We Die, Dead Memories, Sulfur 66/100
Hm.
It's always interesting to see how some of these nu metal groups evolved their sound as time went on (assuming these groups were able to survive post-nu metal, that is). I think Slipknot evolved quite nicely here, adopting more of a groove metal/death metal sound here as they approached the end of the 2000's. Still complete with themes of general angst about modern society of course, but it's at least slightly pleasant to listen to compared to some other acts.
Monet biisit musikaalisesti tosi hyviä ja monipuolisia, rummut ja kitarat mahtavia. Kuitenkin liikaa huutolaulua mun makuun.
Favorite Track: Wherein Lies Continue
I have to admit I liked this album, especially compared to the other, slef titled, Slipknot album I've had. This waa far more listenable, even if it's admittedly way poppier. I kind of like the slower stuff here, like Snuff and Vermillion Pt 2, and the heavy stuff still goes pretty hard like Germatria. It's fine and still not my genre of choice, but I liked this sooooo much more than I expected to. My favorite is probably Gematria, in light of recent Venezuelan events.
Not their best but it definitely has its moments.
Solid album, though not something I would want to listen to all the time.
Good
++: .execute., Gematria (The Killing Name), Vendetta, This Cold Black +: Sulfur, Dead Memories, Butcher's Hook, Gehenna, Snuff, All Hope Is Gone +-: Psychosocial, Wherein Lies Continue 6,9/10
I've never listened to Slipknot before - this wasn't as harsh as I was expecting based on their whole look. Basically pop-metal and even emo sounding at many parts with the occassional heavy or thrash moment.
3/5. I think I liked the direction they took here but it falls through about halfway through when the originality fails and the amount of songs on this album becomes doubled when it doesn't have to be. Similar themes and song structure made me lose track of where I was in the album because I thought I had put it on repeat. Thankfully there were songs that did stand out, for better or worse. Overall, it wasn't a terrible album but the lyrics did suffer at times and I wish there was just a little more effort put into the songwriting because the skill is there, just not utilized well. Best Song: Psychosocial, Snuff, Psychosocial, Gematria (The Killing Name), All Hope Is Gone
Great instrumentalists, I’m just not a fan of the screaming. A couple gems buried in there though
When I think of Slipknot I mostly think of songs that sound like Psychosocial, so I was impressed and surprised by stuff like Sulfur and Snuff. Also the drums on this album is awesome.
Bastante guay recordar mi momento slipknot
Actually preferred the slower tracks.
What started as a slight dismay turned quickly into a rabbit hole dive into the wild unapologetically chaotic, hypocritical and somber yet hopeful in the face of the apocalypse experience that is Slipknot. The opening of the album immediately grips my attention with the distortion of ‘.execute’ then continues on into ‘Gematria’ with ‘Sulfur’ immediately being one of if not my favorite songs on the album. I’d be lying though if I said the intensity of the album dragged on a bit too long with me personally losing momentum for the album after the song ‘dead memories’. However, after getting to ‘This Cold Black’ I was quickly brought back in with ‘Wherein lies Continue’. Unfortunately the landing for me of this album really stuck with ‘Child of Burning Time’ rather than ‘Psychosocial-live’ or ‘Vermilion, pt.2-bloodstone mix’. So to say I was a fan of the albums ending would be a lie. Overall this album gets me hyped to uncover more of Slipknot’s past discography. However, I don’t think they’ve completely won me over as a fan to anticipate their future bodies of work.
Like the first three way more
One of the better examples of 00s metal, I like the transitions from heavy vocals+thrashing into the more melodic sections.
Not bad.
I hated Slipknot when this came out, but I got this album during a heavy lifting day at the gym and it hit perfectly.
Never really listened to them, but hey, I get the appeal, it's groovy, technically impressive, got some industrial metal vibes, got those post-hardcore and nu metal bridges, it's extremely accessible for a metal album. I can't hate.
I always end up comparing any Slipknot release to their debut album, and they always fall flat by comparison. All Hope is Gone has some decent tracks on it, but it also seems like a lot of deliberate attempts at radio-friendliness. 3/5
Weird to hear a slipknot album that isn't all that nu metal sounding. It was decent, but weird to hear more groove metal and such, and some thing I just associate with older metal. Anyways, didn't dislike it and it was pretty good even. 3/5
Shockingly good. I saw this pop up and was initially disappointed because I assumed I’d hate it. But listened to it (twice) while working out and it was pretty good. Powerful, rageful but also melodic and ear wormy in spots. Not saying this is the best metal I’ve heard, but not bad at all. I’m not a metal connoisseur though, so maybe it’s not as decent as I think it is. But I’m giving this a 3 for a solid good album for the genre.
Definitely something I have to be in the right mood for, but this reminded me why I used to listen to this kind of music when I was younger. A bit angsty but also fun. Not something I would reach for everyday, but enjoyable when you’re in the right space for it. Also liked the way it mellowed a bit as the album went on, felt like it kept it varied. Fav song: Sulfur Least fav: Butcher’s Hook
I liked this a lot more than I expected but it did get a bit stale by the second half
I was super excited this morning when I saw I got Slipknot as I was craving something hard, but it wasn't long before I was rudely reminded why I'm not a big fan of this talented band. All Hope Is Gone was what I needed except for the clean singing HATED the clean singing & the Godawful ballad (WHY?) I wish Slipknot would release the clean singing junk somewhere else and just focus on the heavy (which they do exceptionally well) insane bone crushers. I need to make a playlist on YouTube & just add the tracks I like from all Slipknot albums because when they are good, they are a lot of fun and hit all the spots that need hitting. Oh, well, still good enough for 3 stars but as always, the clean singing keeps me from being much more than a casual fan.
Wasn't totally unlistenable, but not my thing
69/100. All Hope Is Gone finds Slipknot at a crossroads, attempting to bridge their signature aggression with a more melodic, experimental edge. In some places, it works. In others, the cracks show.
Not a bad album, probably a victim of the CD era making it overly long. Sometimes less is more.
Not my thing but it is melodic for how hard it is. 3/5
enjoyed more than i would have thought. listened to in the gym for good pumps. solid 3.5
Things I like about metal music: guitar sounds that are distorted but still melodic, drumming that sounds like the drummer is trying to destroy his kit, the high energy and catharsis of it all Things I hate about metal music: screamy vocals that are barely intelligible It's amazing how one aesthetic choice can ruin an otherwise great genre. The parts of songs where the singer just sings instead of shouting are really enjoyable. But there's too much screaming here to raise it above 3 stars (also runs a little long but hey ho)
Cover 6.5 You take the drums and guitar of almost any song and put it to any other song and it's virtually the same. A lot of hardcore punk is like this, as is most metal. That doesn't mean I don't like this album or this style of music. Nowadays, I tend to be more picky, so this album has less affect on me than it did in my teens thru my 30s. I gradually developed a certain musical taste. Although my enjoyment of metal hasn't gone away, it's diminished somewhat. Angry lyrics alone won't do it anymore. There a few not-so-formulaic songs on here. Standouts are Psychosexual, Vendetta, Snuff, Child of Burning Time, Vermilion Pt. 2 and Til We Die (I guess, . Other than these, there are no bad songs just a couple of whatever.
It's fast, it's mad, and it didn't impress me beyond that.
Some were alright, mostly just noisy
Likely more to my taste than most Slipknot albums. I appreciate the talent involved, but it still largely doesn't do a ton for me. Gehannah, Snuff, and Vendetta stand out.
3.5 I actually liked this alot more than I would have thought. Leaned a bit more into the thrash metal than the nu-metal of the earlier albums. but their aesthetic sure is corny. I took my 3 year old daughter trick or treating last year and there were some 13 year boys running around with slipknot masks on. I gave them a horns-up to pump their tires a bit and they seemed to get a kick out of it. Maybe thats who its for
This is ok, but I pretty much lost interest in Slipknot after Iowa. 3
Not a huge fan of this one but love some of the others in their catalog
Not my usual genre, but strangely calming to my brain. I like the heavy double kick bass drum throughout. Fun to see them show some range with a couple of ballads in there. Might be good listening for productivity.
From a certain perspective, the sustained heaviness is impressive. For the most part it is unrelenting aggressive churn.
An album like the typical Metal fan. Definitely could have used some (quite a lot) of trimming around the edges, but it's good at its core.
I’d honestly forgotten that I had another Slipknot album to review. But sure enough, it was lurking in the shadows, waiting for me. Sitting there, with its dumb little mask, looking for the perfect opportunity to pop out and spook me with some guttural growling, or a noisy-ass guitar, or a blasting drum beat. I’d had three five-star albums in a row, which I think was a first for me, even close to 900 albums into this project. Well, the boys from Iowa decided that was an opportune time to come out of hiding and hit me with All Hope Is Gone. I really hated listening to their self-titled album when I had to review it, so I’m not looking forward to this album either. All hope is indeed gone on this Sunday morning, but this album isn’t going anywhere unless I fire it up… I will have to eat a small slice of humble pie, because this album was actually pretty good. I’m really picky when it comes to hard rock, but I enjoyed this album a whole lot more than I did Slipknot’s self-titled album. I could be misremembering, but I feel like the vocals on the whole first album were just guttural growling, but Corey Taylor showed a lot more range on All Hope Is Gone. Lyrically, I felt like this album had quite a bit of range as well, and allowing Corey Taylor to actually sing helped those lyrics carry a bit more weight on this album. The drumming was particularly excellent on this album, just as it was on the self-titled Slipknot album. “Gematria,” “Sulfur,” “Psychosocial,” and “Dead Memories” were all really good songs. Listening to these really helped me understand the appeal that Slipknot has with their audience. These songs reminded me a lot of what was playing on alternative rock radio stations around this time, but these songs sounded a lot better, due to some really good vocals, and songs that were really well arranged and produced. After “Dead Memories” though, I felt like the album didn’t offer much in terms of unique elements or interesting arrangements. That middle chunk of the album wasn’t bad, but I just didn’t find it particularly engaging. However, “Snuff” was my favorite song on All Hope Is Gone. The acoustic guitar was fantastic, the vocals were awesome, and there was some sort of sample or digital effect that sounded like pulsing that really made this song sound even better. This isn’t the sort of album that I’d rush back to, but in the right circumstances, like a workout, I could see myself throwing this on again.
Kinda repetitive tbh
Not their strongest album. Psychosocial and Snuff are the only rememberable songs.
Psycosocial, Dead memories, snuff, vermillion pt2 absolute total bangers. exciting albums, I find that slipknots best songs on the albums are the ones where they mix the gutteral vocals with the clean ones, it makes for some really cool moments. Drums and percussion carry the first few songs. although the riff Gematria is pretty sweet. Sulfur is a good tune. The point around the middle of the album where it I feel like it becomes too much. The albums got some great highs but a few songs that are close to unbearable. all in all pretty decent
Kinda better than I was expecting, but also more generic than I thought it would be. There were some really good songs like gematria and psychosocial but overall didn’t feel like anything too different from a million other metal bands
Some decent riffs if you enjoy metal
I like the more basic heavy metal songs enough not to rate it lower, but don't like Slipknot's particular brand of metal enough to rate it higher.
better than I expected
Love the manic energy, just not sure I can handle a whole album of it
Fine. Barely a 3. Does any Slipknot album deserve to be in this list? I don’t know.
Not my thing, although much like Slayer, these guys do the thing they do very well. And they’re local fellas, so respect.
Back to albums I wasn’t excited to listen to. Actually, I kind of liked this. It was more melodic than I expected, and had some 4 star and even 5 star moments. Unfortunately, it drug out with screams that I didn’t like, so evened out to a 3. Being from Des Moines, I’m never asked, “Do you know any of the Slipknot guys?” No, but I helped one once when I worked retail. He was nice enough. He’s dead now.
Has its moments, but I got tired on my second listen. I usually like to spin an album at least twice before I give my final evaluation. I've definitely heard and enjoyed some tracks off it before, but not something I'd listen to as a full record
I actually kinda fucked with it. Some great songwriting and performances. Still not my thing but psychosocial is a banger
Not bad but nothing I need to listen to again. Joey Jordison was a great drummer and will be for all eternity.
I have a huge bias against anyone who unironically tells me they like slipknot. Well, maybe I have to give them a bit more of a chance, but not too much. Sound was OK, lyrics were pretty cringe.
Man this actually kinda slaps ngl. Pleasantly surprised. It goes kinda corny in a very american way sometimes, kinda like Linkin Park; in a strange eayi kinda like it. They're obviously very talented. Despite the corny parts, I actually think some parts go kinda hard. Well, I'm only 6 songs in, let's keep listening. Okay it does get tiring after a while... A bit too tiring.
Great musicians, good music, a little too much noise for my mood.
Yeah, this is pretty much what 2008 was like! I probably would've liked this if I had listened to it then. Now I think the appeal is largely nostalgia - though I'll admit it was better than I expected, given this isn't my scene. My favorite track was Butcher's Hook. Feel a little trapped here because I gave Napalm Death 2 stars, and I like this more than that. Let's consider it a 2.5 rounded up, shall we?
I don't typically listen to Slipknot, but I was digging this album quite a bit. Not everything was totally appealing, but there were some songs where I was vibing to.
It's a lot.
Ok, so, definitely not a genre that I'm going to throw on, I don't really listen to this style. That being said, open mind, there's some quality to this for what it is. After the hangover I started this one with, and a nap, damned if this one didn't start to grow on me. Title track is a banger.
It seems very commercial as far as slipknot goes. I don’t know their other stuff but it’s not bad. 3 stars
