Has no business being as good as it is
All Hope Is Gone sits in a strange pocket of Slipknot’s discography. It’s a record caught between fury and accessibility. The heaviness is still present, but it’s polished, processed, and shaped into something more radio-friendly. The band seems like they’re reaching for something bigger while still clinging to the chaos that defined their earlier work. That tug-of-war gives the album a slightly uneven feel, but also a fascinating one. Tracks like “Gematria (The Killing Name)” and “Sulfur” still hit hard. The drumming is sharp, the riffs cut deep, and Corey’s vocals keep that trademark aggression front and center. But there are also more melodic moments like “Dead Memories” and “Snuff,” which explore a different emotional space. Those tracks show a band testing new ground without quite abandoning who they are. For me, it’s not their best, but it’s far from boring. I hear a group experimenting and trying to evolve, even if the results aren’t always smooth. Some songs feel timeless, others feel like stepping stones. But I still come back to it when I want something a bit different from Slipknot that still carries weight
Not really my style
Didn't care for this one as much as I did the other album of theirs I got.
Slipknot is not really an album band for me but it’s still Slipknot, so overall I enjoyed this.
Pretty aggressive, quite powerful sounding, however there are so many kick drum hits. Just bin that double kick pedal please. It was a long album, I feel it could have been shorter and I still would have understood that they are quite angry. I find it quite hard to bother listening to the vocal when they are produced in this way, it's not that I don't want to, it just blends in with everything else, it's not very dynamic... so I'm not really sure what they're angry about. But they sure are angry. Maybe they don't like mayonnaise. That's understandable. It's everywhere too, hard to escape mayonnaise. Frustrating times. Anyway, I reckon delete 1/3 of the kick drum hits and drop about 4 songs and this would be knocking on the door of a 4. But as it is it's a 3.
At points this sounds like two completely different bands. Overall it was better than I was expecting. There were a few tracks that were pretty awful, but a few that were surprisingly good. I'm going to give it 3 stars, which seems pretty fair.
I live in a house with 2 massive slipknot fans. Both step children. I've always poopooed slipknot since they first popped up as they were very "mainstream" and the go to for sad kids around me. However, on reflection... Them drum beats are inescapable backed up by big riffs they create an awesome soundscape. I just feel it gets let down by silly vocals a lot. The singy bits are quite nice, there's just too much roaring. I always feel SOAD have a good balance with the singing to roaring ratio. Also it feels a lot of the lyrics here are a bit cringe and "white knighty"
pretty decent album, but why is this on here? not saying it because i don’t like it, slipknot are definitely one of the best nu metal bands out there. it’s just this album seems so out of place against all the other albums included in this book lmao
Good, but not exactly my thing.
Really enjoy a lot of screaming vocals Slipknot. Melodic emo vocals Slipknot is hit or miss
I think this album is a missed opportunity, which is something I often feel with Slipknot. They are technically (I think) good musicians but the screamy vocals kill some good quality guitar and drums. But I always find bits I do like - Psychosocial, Snuff and the Vermillion pt 2 remix are decent, and a couple of others almost get the balance right. Overall a 3 being a mixture of good and bad.
Great technical skills from every member but not my thing
I was a massive slipknot fan as a teenager especially the first two albums (not including MFKR). Even so I don’t think I’d ever heard this album all the way through until now and after finishing it I’m not surprised why. Don’t get me wrong the singles are pretty great Nu-Metal/alt rock bangers with the exception of Snuff, Dead Memories, Gematria (The Killing Name) and Sulfur easily being my favourite tracks on this album. However a lot of the rest of the album feels a bit like Slipknot playing it safe and by the numbers, whether that’s the truth or not it definitely sounds a bit more generic and predictable. The album feels a bit overproduced, it’s missing some of the characteristic grime from the first two albums and I think it would work really well to really make the album feel grittier and angrier. On one hand the band shows something more interesting on songs like Gematria (The Killing Name) where they start to push in a more death metal inspired direction which I think suits the band quite well. But then tracks like Butcher’s Hook seem to do their best to be as annoying as possible with the last minute or so of the track having the most irritating vocal refrain. Out of the performances the drums stand out head and shoulders above the rest. Joey Jordison is an all time great drummer and the one good thing the clean production does for the album is let his drumming take the centre stage. Overall it’s ok, if you’re a fan then the highs are pretty high but the lows feel frustrating and in some places lazy. 3/5
Super lame headgear. Otherwise they are really tight musicians, the yelling seems melodic. As much as I disliked everything about this band, I think they are good at what they do.
Fully expected to give this a 1 or a 2 but honestly it wasn’t bad. Not my cup of tea but definitely better than I expected it to be.
This album came out when i went to high school so i saw it everywhere. So this album has a cultural impact and introduced allot of people to harder music. Personally Coreys voice doesn't always work for me, it can get closer to hardcore punk than death metal. The instrumentation is crisp and really catchy in some tracks. Psychosocial, Sulfur, dead meamories and Snuff are tracks i've been enjoying for many years, but this is definitely not music for everyone
3.25
I like them, riffs are good. The issue for me is the innovation is all about the intense percussion and vocals creating the ferocity of the songs, which is exactly the thing that I find rather tiring after a full album of it. I’d happily revisit any of the songs individually, but never gonna play it as an album again.
nostalgia korn
After Iowa, I hadn’t bothered much with Slipknot, because while talented and composing badass tunes at times, it all seemed very monochromatic. The same applies here. Good, even great at times, but it all sounds alike, but worse when slowed down.
I'm glad Slipknot exist. I'm weirdly proud of them. I'm sure they'd hate this sentiment. Some of their stuff is good workout music. Better than Korn
4/9/25. I actually remember when this album released but never listened to the full thing. I love the tracks Sulfur and Psychosocial, the rest is solid. I'm not the biggest metal guy, but love the sprinkles of melody thrown in here.
I was not expecting to actually like this album. I'll never listen again, but I do appreciate it more than I thought I would.
Not even the best slipknot album
Not too bad, got through the whole album. Not something I would normally listen to but nice for a change of pace I guess.
metal riffs are good, but I don't like the growling vocals
Pretty good album, but not great
Not exactly sure what this one is doing on here. For slipknot I'll stick with Iowa Will I listen to again: 15%
5/10 I enjoyed this more than I expected, though 15 tracks is probably more than strictly necessary. Best track: "Til We Die"
Blah metal noise. At least the later tracks become less noisy and just endearing melodramatic rumination.
The subject matter is dark but it fits a certain mood and angst. The musicianship is really good.
I appreciate Slipknot for what they did for metal at a time when metal wasn't remotely popular. This also goes far beyond what I've expected from Slipknot on previous records. They have more evidence of the roots of metal in the guitars and percussion. However, there is a critical album to lean into instead of this one. Slipknot's debut album is far more important and pretty much just better.
Sounds like what I assume all other modern metal to sound like, for better or for worse. The drums here are amazing and I really like the vocals on here too, both the screamy and not so screamy ones. The second half brought more variety to the album overall but I enjoyed either side. Can't really find any fault with it other than metal isn't really my thing.
eh, couple good songs but slipknot are big ol waste of talent, great drumming and some great vocals but they just make slop
melhor do que eu lembrava
I liked this album more than expected (2.5 rounded up). I think it's because these guys are so dramatic and emotional, just so over the top in their expression. The beginning of the album starts out kind of rough, but then I start head banging? And then get emotional near the end?
Not gonna lie I really enjoyed Gematria. It's a classic white man's account of the hardships of the American experience for so many: the country isn't leaving you behind or oppressing you because you're black, a woman, or any other minority, it's coming for everyone who isn't in power. And if your coping mechanism with the injustices of American imperialism or domestic failures of the American dream is religion, how will you cope if God doesn't even care? While it's an extreme opinion that overlooks actual structural racism or hardships for minorities, the overall sentiment probably resonates more with the working white poor. I also am convinced that a Deftones album is on its way because songs like Gehenna are clearly influenced by Deftones vocals. The album is definitely too long, I think it probably should've ended right before Snuff which just sounds like a A Day to Remember song which has that uninteresting teenage angst sound to me. 3.5/5, probably would've rounded this up to a 4 before Snuff but down to a 3 after because it was just too long to listen to metal.
Vol. 3 mi je puno bolji od ovog ali ok. Ima par dobrih pisama
I don't dislike slipknot, not my favorite though
Different than expected in a few spots. A bit repetitive on some of the elements, but interesting.
Better than expected. Good grooves and riffs. 3 stars.
Not my kinda thing but didn't hate it. Inevitably Snuff was my favourite hahaha
I wanted to like it more than I did - I think If I u derstood the lyrics better I might. Still enjoyed it.
Thought I'd hate this but it grew on me a bit, very political, very dark
Had a nice little chuckle when I got this today. For all of its seemingly monotonous groove and overwhelming stomp, Slipknot manage to conjure a feeling of resignation and defeat emanating from all corners of life in the appropriately titled All Hope is Lost. It's unrelenting ugliness throughout may not be for the weak-hearted but for those who could withstand it, there is something to plant a flag on and become one's motto. Favorites: Gematria (The Killing Name), Sulfur, Psychosocial, Butchers Hook, Gehenna, This Cold Black, Wherein Lies Continue, Child of Burning Time, 'Til We Die.
Curious choice. My understanding was Slipknot's stand out album was Iowa (although I haven't heard it), and here we have 2 slipknot albums included neither of which are Iowa. I started off wondering if I might enjoy this more than the debut, Gematria and Sulfur were decent. However the songs, while heavy, then became more often stadium rock kind of stuff and almost sing along. Which I can't stand, it's again that WWE vibe which became really tired. It's mixed much better than the debut that's for sure. Picked up a little with Butchers Hook. Ok. Next couple tracks are decent. Snuff is more of that aforementioned poo. This is actually a half decent nu metal LP. Wikipedia seems to think they've moved away from nu metal here and I suppose that's my ignorance but it still sounds nu metal to me, just with some shitty bits.
My initial reaction was pretty negative, likely because of the distorted vocals on some tracks, and the rage. I'm fine with angry music, I'm fine with fast music, but stuff that just seems to be raw bile, well, not really my cup of tea. That said, some of the other tracks on the record, as it progressed, had some more interesting elements, and I found myself deciding to give it a three. Ultimately the album had a lot more range than I thought it would, given the first four or five tracks, and while I don't think of this record as some great work of art, it's certainly got more going for it than I thought it would.
Aggressive, of course, but also more pop than I was expecting. Quite enjoyed listening. Not something I'd always be in the mood for, and the aggressive schtick gets tiresome (I'm still not entirely clear what they're so angry about...), but there's definitely musicality to enjoy here. Snuff's a bit of a rogue entry on the album - quite a welcome bit of variety. Actually, most of the back half feels more up my street.
Incluso con el ultraconocido himno de estadio "Psychosocial" este álbum de Slipknot cae muy abajo en comparación con sus anteriores trabajos y algunos que otro de los modernos. No es una mala escucha, pero no es algo memorable. Joey Jordison D.E.P
There are mainly two types of track on this album - those where the singer sounds like he could do with some throat lozenges and those where he doesn't. After a while the tracks begin to sound the same.
Better than it’s given credit.
Listened to this a lot back in high school. Still like heavy music but this just didn't quite hold up
i dunno, i don't wanna be a stubborn fan but i really don't think Metallica-inspired groove metal is the right direction to "change your sound up" in; firstly because there's not really a shortage of those types of bands, and secondly because super fast, blasty drumming is really hard to listen to with mainstream loudness war production. it feels like Joey Jordinson is in my skull and just going wild on the snare, and not in a cool "im in your mind muahahaha" way, in a "i have a mosquito stuck in my ear please get some tweezers" way. i mean of course I like "Psychosocial" and "Snuff", but even the latter song feels a bit ill-fitting. am i supposed to feel emotional about this song when it's being sung by a guy who looks like a sown-together homunculus with Target bull terrier eyes? im definitely not one of those people who doesn't connect with things with non-human faces, but i did also spend the previous 10 songs hearing this thing bellow like a wounded beast about the Iraq War and the record industry. it's a tad ridiculous.
Decent metal. Not my favorite of the bunch. Probably 3.5
Classic Slipknot. Very heavy, crazy fast double pace drums. I prefer the slow songs such as Snuff and Vermillion though.
Schnell, hart, der Drummer gibt alles. Cool!
I have always appreciated Slipknot for bringing a new wave of young fans to the loud side of music. However, when it comes to listening to this album as a standalone piece, it falls short on multiple fronts. The album feels like a mishmash of disjointed metal tracks, suffering from a severe identity crisis. I found myself reaching for the skip button quite often by my third listen, which certainly does not make for an enjoyable experience. There are some highlights, though. The opener, "Gematria," is loud and features some incredible guitar riffs. "Gehenna" is another standout track, albeit much slower, where Slipknot captures a creepy, Deftones-esque atmosphere. Unfortunately, many of the songs give off the impression of a band trying too hard without truly taking off.
I expected to dislike this, as I am not a fan of nu-metal and related. However, I kind of dug this, and not every song was pure thrash, so that’s good. This could grow on me…
First the good. Drums were fire. Amazing. Guitar riffs on point. The lyrics I did pay attention to were poignant social commentaries. Now the bad. I really just don’t like scream-y vocals. It pulls me so far out of enjoying it
Meh
More melodic than I expected but not as much fun as previous Slipknot album
Surprisingly good. Some pretty bad low points.
I genuinely cannot differentiate any of their albums from one another. All I can say is good sounding metal but nothing stands out to me. Gematria fucking slays though.
More of the same from ol Slipknot. I think I liked their debut more?
Good one to work to. I enjoyed it.
I hate horror movies, Hot Topic, and body odor, so one would think I'm inclined to hate Slipknot. This album was a pleasant surprise, though, even if I may be one of the first people ever to apply the word "pleasant" to this thing. The riffs were consistently great, and the band shows a bit of range, sprinkling in clean vocals here and blast beats there to prove they can do more than one type of metal. As shocking and off-putting as they are on the surface, their sound is actually pretty polished and well-produced, and while I understand why that might make them a joke to a lot of metalheads, it definitely helped things go down easier for me. I didn't love this, but I did enjoy a lot of it and I now get why they have (had?) such a big fanbase. Best song: Psychosocial
Pretty sweet
I'm not much into the heavier stuff, but I enjoyed this album. I was surprised to recognize a couple of the tracks as well.
Pretty decent. First time listening to a SlipKnot album. I do like some metal stuff but this band has always scared me a little. Thought it was gonna be heavier than it is. Overall quite enjoyed it
Tbh, very surprised a Slipknot album is on this list. Not that I think Slipknot is bad, just that I don't know if they belong on a list like this. Also, the album is totally fine. It's not particularly amazing, nor does it really do anything new. It's just good metal. There's a few songs that differentiate themselves from the rest of the album, which keeps you engaged. Those songs end up being the highlight of the album for me, generally. Ultimately, this doesn't really stand out for me too much. It's good, but it's not great. Favorite Song(s): Psychosocial, Snuff, 'Til We Die
I like some Slipknot stuff, but this wasn't really what I expected to see on the list. None of their really good songs are here, and I have to say some songs sound more like light Nickelback than what I consider Slipknot. The first quarter or so of the album is quite good, but could live without the rest.
Not really a Slipknot fan but I like some of their songs like "Before I forget", none of the songs I like is on this album though. "Psychosocial" was probably my favourite song and the only one that really stood out. Nice to find a new song I like but the rest didn't really stick. Again, I like my metal with dragons more than with angst. Still it was ok.
I wasn't a metal fan when I was in my teens, and I'm still not, but this is nearly like popcorn metal. There's something silly about it, but it's still listenable. The singles do stand out as decent
This isn’t something I’d normally put on but overall I enjoyed it. Some really decent nu-metal 3.5/5
I never could get into these guys. Annoying whiny metal. Stand-out: Gehenna
I feel like before even listening the name of the album reflects on today and yesterday (today is Nov 6th 2024) It’s okay. Death metal and very screamy but meh.
The production on this album is immaculate. It’s a full sounding rock album, you can tell they paid attention to the drum sound especially. I also liked a lot of the songs. However, this band needs to learn to trim the fat! This album did not need to be as long as it did. There were multiple songs that could’ve been half as long but they added in three extra choruses unnecessarily. I also am not huge on the attempted crossover songs, you know the ones that are like black album Metallica, trying to get some radio play. Those songs were lame.
liked songs: Sulfur, This Cold Black, Snuff, Child of Burning Time, 'Til We Die I really don't like the thrashy parts of the album. There are a number of good songs, but this is definitely not the band at their best. Overall, just good. 3
I’ve always loved Slipknot. The mix between metal, pop, hip hop, industrial, groove and everything in between is just great. This album is by far not my favourite by them, but I still enjoy it. Joey Jordinson on drums is simply incredible and can’t be denied
Machines within machines within I gotta gun I gotta gun I gotta terminator gun. Ya feel me? This was aight
first listen some great energy but they're still not that inventive in their songwriting
3.4 - So so so angry. Parts I was really enjoying but I honestly I feel like they are just a bit to emo for me. The double base pedal stuff is far too much, no matter how hard it is to do. But I didn't dislike it and think it definitely has it's place.
There were what seemed to be two different singers on this album. I liked one and hated the other.
Interesting one. This was the album that turned me off slipknot, after growing up absolutely loving their first three. It sounded too long, bloated, and like Stone Sour in places. So I never really gave it the time of day, which I now think might have been a mistake. There are some decent tracks on here, admittedly nowhere near Vol. 3 levels. Nice to come back to it almost 20 years later and get a different view.
i really liked Snuff, i don't care if that makes me a normie or something, it's just a good dark gothy love song. the rest of it isn't really my cup of tea but i do get it
Just not for me.
expected more
I had to look at the lyrics to give this a far review, since I couldn't understand the lyrics half the time. As a fellow rager, I can appreciate the message and heavy metal sound. This is perfect when you feel angry (which I do often). I haven't listened to Slipknot or heavy/death metal in the past because I worried about the messaging and the darkness of it, but this album wasn't too bad. I've read their other stuff is more intense.
Nice sound. Not as throaty as I thought it would 5
first half was probably a 2 for me, the last half i liked more, so it squeaks by
That was better than I was expecting. Will have to give them a broader listen.
I've always associated Slipknot with the scary weirdo incel types and have never actually listened to them even though I have listened to a ton of Slipknot-adjacent music. Track 2 actually has me pretty stoked. The drumming is sick and it's not the nu-metal style I was expecting. The breakdowns remind me so much of A Day To Remember.
187/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
The more screaming they did on the songs, the worse they were. However, I thought the slower songs were really enjoyable. Saved a couple
A heavy and slickly produced record that feels nostalgic without quite being my thing. But I can't really listen to Psychosocial without hearing a bit of Justin Bieber (Youtube will give you answers to why).
better than i thought but not enough to keep me coming back
Surprisingly accessible end of Slipknot. Underneath this kind of metal is some incredible musicianship.
Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.
k so like slipknot isnt metalz cos they aren't trve and br00tal enuff and they have like melodies n shit But to be srs: okay. Fine. Rehashed thrashy SYL or Fear Factory style metal- I think the weirdest things they do is insert post-grunge sing songs choruses into them sometimes which don't sound... terrible? But it is kind of jarring. Sooooo many fills. It's kind of distracting. Pacing and composition is average for this type of metal. Chording's a bit boring and uninteresting- tritone overusage and minor key overusage, but at least the intensity and speed makes it way better than something like Korn. The ballad is funny but a bit too uninspired in arrangements to be outstanding. I kind of wish they either went full metal or full DisneyTunes here, they're not really interesting enough composers to convincingly pull a mix of the two off. Seems as if this band peaked in "Mate, Feed, Kill, Repeat."
The fast tempo and heavy metal guitar riffs brought me back to the days of playing Guitar Hero
Not going to lie these guys are a little bit weird. I have never really listened to any of their music. This album had some good tracks ( 'Snuff', 'Sulfur' and 'Psychosocial' ) I'm not sure if I would listen to the whole thing again but will definitely go back and listen to some of the tracks and might go and find some of their other stuff.
Quite a transition from Japan to Slipknot, a band I am pleasantly surprised to see on this list.
Sort of what you would expect from Slipknot I'm sure if your in to this type of thing it's enjoyable 3*
The thing is that this is both a good album and a bad one. This album can be really prolonged and not have the best lyrics, but it’s still enjoyable, and I liked the most melodic parts the most (Snuff, Dead Memories, the chorus of Psychosocial). There’s both a 2 star album and a 4 star album in this, so I think a 3 is warranted.
kinda like this more than the self titled, can i say that. honestly i think it's kinda weird that this is even on the list, it's probably the least essential of all their pre-2010s albums. but dead memories and snuff are here, so i won't complain (plus psychosocial and sulfur...pretty loaded album era for slipknot singles)
First ever listen to a Slipknot album. Not bad; shades of Megadeth and Machine Head here and there. Was worth checking out
3.5
"Psychosocial" and "Snuff" are very good songs. Other than that, I think Slipknot falls a bit too far from my image of metal music. I'm all into metal/rock ballads, but their screams in some of the songs are too annoying. 3.5/5.
Too dark for me. Awesome drummer
6/10…
Pretty good!
Fine. Pretty good. A couple bleh songs. Too long. Ez 3.5
Really good at times but also wears out its welcome, second half is worse. 3.5
I expected to hate this and I did not.
Aggressive sounds with origins in 90s alternative metal with better production than the band's debut combine with some fairly generic angry poetry on All Hope Is Gone.
I was today years old when I realized the song "Bodies" (which I hate) was Drowning Pool and not Slipknot. I'm not actually sure I've ever heard a Slipknot song before this album then. So, I was expecting the worst going into this. Surprisingly, I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. But it's still not really my cup of tea. Several of the songs sound like other bands, ranging from Metallica to Pantera to Disturbed. Nothing about this band stands out as different from any of the many nu metal bands riddling the field at the same time — their masks are one of the only distinguishing things about them. And considering this album came out in 2008, when the nu metal fad was already dying out, I'm not sure why it's on this list. The attempt at tackling issues like politics in addition to the usual songs about bad relationships and depression was kind of interesting, though System of a Down does a way better job of it (they also do harmonization better). Not sure why they aren't on this list instead. And though the band disavows fascism and racism, I can definitely picture a ton of Neo-Nazis in their native Iowa rocking out to this album. The album is also just really long. I will say, I enjoyed the latter part of the album more — from the title track onward it mellows out a bit, and the harmonization and the musicianship of the band are more apparent. 3/5 — not terrible, but not particularly noteworthy either.
If you want a good metal album, it's hard to go wrong with this one. I think I like it better than their first one.
Listened Before? Y Man. This album feels like a missed opportunity for Slipknot to really take their sound into the stratosphere. Psychosocial is such a gem. Gemarita and the title track are brutal progressions from their previous work. The rest of this album is not what I had hoped for. Dead Memories feels like an out-of-place afterthought. So many other tracks are trying to hard to be a toned-down version of what SK previously was. This is my unbiased opinion as someone who has no previous strong feelings about the band as a whole- I wish they'd have thought hard before compromising and this record could've been an absolute metal classic. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Psychosocial
kill kill kill killkill kill kill killkill kill kill killkill kill kill kill
Kinda more of a 2.5 bc it just felt very middle of the road to me. It was fine. Nothing stood out to me.
Iron Maiden and Metallica are much better.
Have to say I was pleasantly surprised by some of the tracks. Not all shouty and loud like I was expecting, although there was some of that.
No reallyup my alley but I wasnt compelled to turn it off.
First half of the album was incredible. Yell more!
Me hace acordar a Aggretsuko Mg.
Can't get past the voice, sorry :( Nice instrumentals tho
Meh. This is a weird album. Tonally all over the place. Honestly it's not bad. Just not really for me. I'm not much of a metal head. I can appreciate the musicianship though. Some of the most talented musicians are metal drummers. Absolute insanity.
Slipknot drums are badass. Big fan of the more harmonic aspects, less of the screamo aspects in my old middle age. Highlights: psychosocial
Good melodic metal, which at times starts to sway into the radio-friendly'esque hard rock sound of that era. Perhaps it's revisionist on my part, but those few songs have not aged well. Overall it's a good album, worth picking up and having in a collection, but I'll admit I'm having a hard time shaking those few songs.
Not a fan of thrash, death, or doom metal but at least this has some singing and it's not just growling the whole time. It's more creative than most music in this genre.
fruit salad
I never paid much attention to Slipknot when they came out. I only remember thinking that there were too many of them and I hated there outfits. I wasn't really interested in another Limp Bizkit-esque "heavy" band - especially when Tool and Rage were still recording. For the most part, I still don't really like it. However, I will admit that - at times - it seems melodic and thoughtful. That's probably mostly the Cory Taylor effect (I liked Stone Sour).
I respect the artistry here. You can tell that this band especially is so technical. From the double bass kick, to the guitar wailing along with it, to Corey Taylor’s melodies, it’s really something to behold. That said, this isn’t really my genre. The Nu/alt metal sound isn’t something that I super enjoy. I love the later/bonus tracks MUCH more, when you strip down the extra effects of the guitars/drums and just let their singing, songwriting/ melodies shine. I’ll give it a three, but honestly I think on another listen I could see myself giving a four.
So I didn’t hate this Soundtracked a session at the gym Have no desire to ever listen to it again
Good gym music, with Standouts in Gematria, Vendetta, and Psychosocial.
Way better than expected. More melodic and skilled than I thought. Not a gimmick band at all. Will play this again for sure
Not as bad as I thought but not too exciting. Low 3
Well, it's heavy. But you know, it's "clean" heavy. And I like my heavy to be dirty. I feel like Slipknot has always sold us on an image, and while that image is certainly marketable and striking, I never felt like it represented the music. Like I said, it's metal, there's no doubt. And the band is ridiculously talented, deserves their success, all that jazz. But I just feel like every aspect of the sound is way too polished for the nasty, bloody, evil, villainous concoction that is this band.
I always thought of these guys as cheesy mall goth, but it wasn't as bad as I thought and wasn't that unpleasant to listen to.
Too much
Love the title, the lead singer seems angry. The music is driving, the final destination doesn't seem pleasant. They want to burn my cities down. I live in a wood frame house. The angry 12 year old me would have liked this. The drumming and guitar are pretty impressive, how the lead vocal would maintain that gravel shout throughout a concert is beyond me. Then there is the smooth melodic vocal juxtaposition on some songs. A great art project would be a photo booth taking photos of the concert goers. I'l never listen to this again.
From The Beatles’ “Rubber Soul” to Slipknot - this is why I love this project. I’ve been listening to Slipknot for a couple decades now and they’ve always held a special place in my black heart. I don’t listen to them often, but I always appreciate the versatility and diversity of the band’s musicianship. They have like 8 members in their band, each with a unique addition. I think they have like 2 DJs or something, one being a turntablist. Their sound is gritty, hard, aggressive, yet also beautifully melodic and harmonic. They cover a broad spectrum of musical ability and act as a great stepping stone into the metal genre for those unfamiliar. I wasn’t familiar with this record, but I’m glad I am now. Keep slaying.
Suprised to find an aesthetic philosophy running within the sheath of aggression. Still not for me, though
Why does metal make me smile? The nostalgia of listening to music like this makes me reminiscent of dark times in my life, and for some reason that releases dopamine in my brain. Which is conflicting to me. I like this, but don’t love it.
This is a bit hard for me to rate all things considered. It feels maybe a bit too long, you could easily knock some 20-25 minutes off thebackend and lose nothing. But despite that I also didn't really mind the length, it never started to feel sluggish. I also appreciated the energy they brought, Lord knows this list is lacking in that. A 3 I guess. I liked the riffs, Sulfur and Psychosocial are pure bangers, but the second half is mostly just alright.
Like that melidic HC/Nu-Metal better than expected.
There's better metal out there.
Wanted to give it a 2. I ended up like it too much. Way catchier than expected.
agresivo
Some great songs along with filler tracks of screaming and electronic drums.
Throwback to Middle School... Out of this style of music, I dig it the most. Goes hard but still has melody and riffage. Thrashes and grooves and has good vocals.
I tried. I really tried. I recognize the musicianship for what it is. Some of the tracks have a more broad appeal, and the anthemic nature of the lyrics – I can see how someone is a certain frame of mind could find solace in the lyrics. In the end, it's not a "listening" album for me. Nu-Metal just isn't my cup of tea.
Thoughts before listening: This is my 2nd slipknot album which seems a bit excessive. The first one at least had \"Wait and Bleed\", so I'm not sure what this one could possibly have on it to justify the inclusion. I didn't like the first album so chances are I won't like this one either. Review: Well, I have to say this is better than the first Slipknow album I listened to. While there are still pummeling moments on this album, the band is definitely leaning on their pop hook writing abilities a little more on this album...especially on songs like "Sulfur", "Psychosocial", and "Dead Memories" which I am enjoying quite a bit. This is a 3-star album for the strength of these 3 catchy songs.
I am not a big fan of heavy metal music although I really love some songs by Metallica, Korn, System Of A Down, etc. Slipknot will never be a band I can listen to, simply too far away from my musical taste. But one can't deny that they have quite a lot of nice riffs and they are really good musicians (I don't think you can play good heavy metal music without being an excellent musician).
It’s just a long time to be so screamy and angry
There’s some meat here, but it feels empty.
I actually like Slipknot, but I have to be in the mood for them, some of their stuff is a bit too much. This album is pretty good though. I liked it.
Hey - I've never listened to Slipknot - I was coming in expecting to hate it. However, the drumming and guitar playing is absolutely spectacular. I put this on while I worked and was insanely productive. Not sure this will be in my rotation any time soon - but hey I appreciate it, and I see where you're coming from Maggots (this is what Slipknot people call themselves).
Slipknot are definitely talented musicians. I will grant them that. Their drummers / percussionists are great, and Corey Taylor switches from that growl to singing voice is spectacular. But... over an hour of it is just... exhausting. I listen to 2 or three songs and I feel... tired. There were at least a few slower songs as a respite, which were good too. I have friends who are death metal fans, and while a song or two is good, there has got to be some variation for me. Or else it just gets tiring. So there were songs like "Vermillion Pt. 2", I'd like to hear more of that too. But I guess that's not totally their style...?
It's just a lot to take in with Slipknot. Audio/sensory overload. I think I had the same reaction to their debut album The drums are ridiculous, in a good way - such pace and deft sound. But between Corey Taylor's growling and the pulse and level of the rest of instruments (mostly guitars) it's a bit nauseating. It's a shame because these guys are super talented and the lyrics are quite good. But it's hard to grasp or enjoy the lyrics and music with the sheer angry noise factor. They need more melody, which they show they're capable of on Psychosocial (a really good song), Dead Memories (a bit meh though), Vendetta (solid), Snuff (a real nice softer song and change of pace) and on parts of Sulfur (not bad) and Gehenna (but when the melody isn't there, it's too much). I have a lot of respect for Taylor because he has a good vocal range and shows his multidimensionality between songs and with his side project Stone Sour (some real tender moments there, similar to Snuff). I'd just like a little more consistent blend of it within songs.
This is like a gateway drug, everyone listens to slipknot then they realise that there’s better metal bands. Corey’s vocals are all round lame, the screaming is just hard enough to be “hard” but not too hard for precious radio. His singing voice sounds like ever other butt rock band from the early 2000s
I get why they picked this. Should have done self titled!
It's somewhat interesting. Gotta love the energy, but I can't really understand a lot of what they're saying, you know what I mean? Exactly.
Feels like more of the same from Slipknot without being exceptional. Fulfills their niche of hard heavy metal with aggressive rhythm and guitars. Though it all seems dark and angry, the lyrics seem pretty strong for what will pass in this genre. The highlight is their ballad, Snuff, which is quite good.
In my Slipknot album rankings this one is in the lower parts but it’s still a good album. I was just surprised to see it on this list! I picked this cd up at Target in Castle Rock, CO back in highschool and I remember enjoying it but thinking that it wasn’t reaching the prior heights. Slipknot is an interesting band, not just because they have 9 members, but there’s a lot of their work that seems influenced by outside forces. Don’t get me wrong, I love that. The first album is powerful in a dungeon type of way, songs like Purity and Eyeless were about a girl who was put in a box and a conversation with a homeless person. The second album saw them dig through the floor of that dungeon and really get into the dirt. Songs that doubled down on that fierceness and spectacle, giving way to Everything Ends, Disasterpiece, and Skin Ticket (I really hope we get that album so I can dive into that). But after that there was media backlash that said they were just shock performers, being so wicked and vile or something like that. So what happens? Their next album doesn’t contain a single curse word. I used to think that they went mainstream trying to get more people to listen to them or more radio stations to play them. I didn’t find that fact out till recently. So when this album came out I was a little disappointed that it seemed to go even less hard than Vol 3. I think there’s some cursing but not much, and some of the songs are slower. With that out of the way, I loved Psychosocial. That’s a top Slipknot song. Sulfer is great too. I actually learned to like this album more after I saw them in concert. There are songs on here I still skip though. Which is why it’s lower on my list. But their next album makes up for all of that.
What better way to listen to a Slipknot album then on mic with Alex, the resident Slipknot expert? Can't remember if this is the first we listened to together, but it just made sense. I've never been a fan, but I'm more open to their style of music now than I ever was. This is a late-career album for them, but it definitely still has the edge, at least in doses. Some serious hard-hitters at the beginning, though it did fizzle out for me on the back half. Some interesting softer song choices (maybe they're maturing?), but I just want that dark evil metal from the freaks in the masks. Intro was really cool, some news footage audio with just insane drums building up. As an album, it was decent. I know they've got better. Favorite tracks: Gematria, Execute, Psychosocial. Album art: Frankly, pretty boring. All the guys standing in the field. I mean, I guess that would be scary to see IRL but as an image on my phone, it looks a bit like their parents made them stand together for a group photo. And Slipknot has some great evil album covers, this isn't one of them. 3/5
Gosh! I am rather enjoying the bits that sound like a less whiny, more shouty Megadeth, but disliking the bits that sound like a more whiny, less shouty Disney princess. What I mean is, the nu-metal emo bits sound over produced and like they are from a broadway musical to me. For example, "Snuff" is the most listened to song on this album according to the Spotify numbers and it sucks. Horrible nu-metal whiny emo nonsense. Out of interest, I listened to some of their first album afterward and it was a bit more full of youthful energy, vim and disgusting lyrics. I don't know. I rather enjoyed listening to the album but I doubt I'll go back to it.
Was surprised that beyond the different singing how much the riffs reminded me of classic Metallica. Had a massive migraine earlier in the week though so could not get past first couple of songs. Will try and revisit.
Solid 3 I think. Nothing actually stood out too much beyond psychosocial, but also not bad
A good album. I will still only really listen to the singles
Let me get this out of the way: This was one of the hardest albums for me to listen to in the history of me listening to albums. It was a long one (seriously? 12 songs divided into 58 minutes?), and my attention span was crawling and waiting for some of the songs to end. Regardless, the musicianship is on point. Corey Taylor makes for a great vocalist as always, and Joey Jordison’s drumming carries the songs. 3.6/5 Fav: “Dead Vendetta” Least Fav: “This Cold Black”
Huolestuttaa vähän, että tykkäsin tästä. Toisaalta kuulen tästä, kuinka paljon j-rockbändit ovat kuunnelleet Slipknotia, joten jotain nostalgista on henk. koht. Ja siis Taylorin laulu on hienoa. Liian pitkä vain, vaikka jaksaakin melkein pitää mielenkiinnon yllä hyvällä vaihtelulla.
I liked this way more than I thought I would. Could see turning this on when I’m angry or angsty and the screaming would just feel right. I was super impressed by the drumming and guitar.
If you are a heavy metal fan, you can’t go wrong. Some really good lyrics. There are 2 songs played regularly on the radio- there is another that should be and isn’t!
Definitely less screaming than anticipated which maybe made it better. I liked it. Probably not their best work ie Iowa but still a nice heavy metal/nu metal offering
If there were no songs with growling it would be a really good album for me.
Everybody knows that Slipknot peaked with their self-titled and Iowa, two albums boasting with youthful rage and hatred. Those are the albums that changed the face of metal by bringing the much ridiculed nu-metal tag to a more extreme level. While those aren't the only good albums that Slipknot made, they are arguably their most important. An album like All Hope Is Gone feels really anecdotal compared to them, so I can't for the life of me explain why they would include that particular one here. Anyway.
I've been a Slipknot for so long... but I can't find any logical reasons why this album should be on this list. The first Slipknot was a totally breakthrough new sound, Iowa is considered a masterpiece of violence and darkness, Vol. 3 is their most notable album in terms of hits and having mastered their sound. All Hope Is Gone is great, but it wasn't bringing something new or better than their 3 first ones.
Slipknot ditches nu metal, and in the process loses some of what made them stand out. Still, frontman Corey Taylor carries a sufficient menace in his vocals and the arrangements pack a punch.
Good, hard rock album. Unique sound
I was jamming to this one. Great head-banging riffs. I appreciate how they balance the intense screamed vocals with more melodic vocals but I also don’t love the more melodic singer. His parts can feel a little cheesy or something. Insane drums! That double bass assault is ridiculous! Solid overall and I respect it but it’s not something I’m going to return to.
Ok ok ok hear me out- Slipknot deserves to be on this list and I think they deserve to be on this list twice, for their self titled album and for "Iowa". This album might not even be their 3rd best album (from my memory, I'm not a current listener really), but I will give it a good listen. "Psychosocial" was the single (i think?) from this album, and it has some cool moments. If I'm remembering correctly, this was when Corey Taylor actually started to sing more in Slipknot tracks- something that he kind of reserved more for his other band Stone Sour. Beyond that, it's not a bad song, and it has some moments that are pretty cool, like the breakdown. I think seeing this album is a let down for me on this list. Slipknot is corny as hell these days but when they came out, they were seen as a super fresh band that really did a lot for heavy metal. Seeing this album here makes me think that either this is the only time they will be on the list (which like I said, this is their 3rd best album AT BEST), or they will have 3 entries on this list which is probably too much. Please have their self titled or "Iowa" come up. This one isn't it. If this is the only time they are on the list- then RIP Joey Jordison. One of the best drummers of this era!
2.8
intro track, “.execute.”, with its distorted guitars and vocals, is very reminiscent of “in the beginning”, the intro track on the album shout at the devil by motley crue. great way to open the album and set the tone. heavy and aggressive. dark lyrics. solid musicianship. a frontman who sings with passion and intensity. it’s everything you could want in a metal album… except one thing. there’s a trend that started in heavy music a while back… not sure when. it’s when a singer alternates from harsh vocals to clean vocals in the same song. and i never was into it. this album would be a solid “four stars” from me if it stuck to the harsh vocals. but they didn’t, so i had to deduct a star. having said that, “snuff” is a solid song.
This was better than I thought it might be. Never knowingly listened to the band, and it’s a bit too much like Lordi for my taste, although there are some nice moments. I probably prefer my metal more British and slightly earlier and I’m unlikely to listen to this again. But I’m glad I did listen to it.
Better than I remembered, but also worse in some ways (the heady days of singing in the middle of metal).
We get it bro, you vape.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. A little rage to meet my own rage.
whatever
It’s numetal fun but nothing special. 3 stars
Metal
👹❗️ I prefer different angry music.
I liked this better than I thought I would. Though I’m not crazy about the guttural screaming or overall ethos, there’s actually some solid songwriting behind these tracks and the more melodic vocal parts are actually quite listenable. This is never going to be something I listen to with any intention after this point, but I prefer it to Megadeth or Anthrax. Somehow, I think they avoid some of the dorky faux-machismo that tends to turn me off from metal—it just feels very dark. Top tracks: “Vendetta,” “Psychosocial”
Before listening to this I didn't know groove metal was even a thing. Now that I know that, I can make sure to never listen to it again. Thanks for the PSA, Slipknot.
Better than I thought it would be. Didn’t love it at first but the longer I listened the more I started vibing. Unfortunately, the longer it went on the more I reverted back to my intial aversion toward the music. Instrumentals were great, vocals a bit grating.
Not my jam. But I can respect this more than other bands that exist in this space. Metallica, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Korn etc. Basically any bass-heavy alt-metal stuff. It's also worth looking at how incredibly popular Slipknot is outside of the U.S. Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Mexico even Indonesia has more Spotify listeners than here in the states.
These guys, individually and collectively, are good musicians. They are technically astute. #4 & #7 (the guitarists) rip killer riff Andrea killer riff. The vocals are not horrible, which is what I expected. I thought I was in for another Sepultura level wrenchingly offensive growls. The guttural source is here, and not entirely pleasant. However, Slipnot’s growling felt more selectively used and more understandable. They mixed in “regular” singing too that is pretty good. And it’s like #8 (the vocalist) knows the growling causes discomfort because sometimes his voice gets less growly through the course of a verse to make it better. The drummer is incredibly talented too. Just too much straight double kick for my liking, but I recognize that it’s not easy to pull off. I was totally expecting to get this and I didn’t, which was a nice surprise.
A thing that’s not really for me, but fine I guess
Slipknot is such a staple of the metal scene in the 2000s and onward, and yet I somehow mostly missed them when I was getting into this type of music at that time. So this was a nice album to visit. Since I'm not intimately knowledgable on Slipknot, I don't know for sure what makes this album stand out specifically in terms of their discography, but if I had to guess, I think it's probably the slower, not quite as hard route that they take here. This album does a good job of still being metal, but showing off amazing guitar and percussion work, and definitely lets Corey Taylor's smoky vocals shine beyond just metal "growl" vocals. "Snuff", in particular, highlights all of these things, and as a result, probably stands as the best song on the album. "Psychosocial" is among the best that the album has to offer as well, and while heavier than "Snuff", it still finds places to show off Corey's voice.
I get why people like this stuff, high energy, charged lyrics. Just not my style of music
Solid
Has some good metal moments but honestly it gets pretty cliched at times. Not the best metal out there but the percussion can really rip sometimes.
Textbook dethmetal. Cool.
Cool drumming and the songs come together when they sing clean vocals. Not such a fan of the death metal growls. The guitar parts are a bit cheesy though.
I'm not a fan but I've heard Ohio and that was harder. Coyple of tracks I liked, others were unmemorable. Love the drumming and those distinctive guitar squeals.
I have to judge this harshly because some of my favorite bands are metalcore. The instrumentals are good and the vocals definitely work for the songs. However, the lyrics often have nursery-rhyme simple poetic structures and it gets on my nerves. Additionally, sometimes it seems like they have something important to say about social/political issues and sometimes they're just just being edgy. Psychosocial is easily the best song here. I don't know who to recommend this album to. Non-metal fans wouldn't like it, but there are so many other albums I'd play for another metal fan before this one.
I was pleasantly surprised at how 80s metal this was.
I didn't hate it, but I don't need to listen again.
Un exitoso cambio de estilo para la banda de Iowa. Aun así, y a pesar de canciones como “Psychosocial” y “Dead Memories”, el disco palidece en comparación al debut de la banda o a su segundo disco.
Haven't listened to this since when it came out when I was in middle school. I enjoyed re-listening to it. The breakdowns were great throughout the album. Dead Memories was my favorite, I wish they had included more clean vocals on this album.
I liked the songs that had strong melodies: "Snuff", "Psychosocial", "Dead Memories", "Vermilion, Pt. 2", "'Til We Die", and "Gehenna". As for the other songs, their melodies were more difficult to make out, and so those tracks didn't appeal to me as much.
batera insana pae
Late career Slipknot was not how I was expecting to start this Thursday, but hey why not? Album opens with .execute. which sets the stage with some post-apocolyptic horror movie vibes. Slowly building static with a vocal recording poking through that gives way to an elongated drum fill. Basically just a long intro to Gematria that picks up heavy on the double bass. Gematria is an unexpectedly political song talking about how America will burn your cities down -- presumably referring to expansionist policy in the Middle East. Sulfur is a bit more straightforward metal. Like much late career Slipknot it sounds fine, but doesn't really tap into anything special. Psychosocial is a fine enough song. Largely driven by an angsty guitar riff and Corey Taylors growl, this one is pretty effective pop-metal. Gives way to one of the more colorful guitar solos that I can think of in a Slipknot song. Almost feels more like Avenged Sevenfold than proper Slipknot. Dead Memories and Vendetta are, once again, more alt-pop-metal than anything else. I find myself tapping along, but don't find this particularly compelling. Though I will say I enjoyed the abrupt breakdown on Vendetta. Butcher's Hook is one of the more interesting songs on this record so far. I enjoy the heavy metal riff that progresses the intro and leaves Taylor's vocals hanging off of the end of each segment. Creates a tense imbalance. I will say the whiny chorus throws me though; I'm almost never a fan of that technique. Wherein Lies Continue starts strong and contains one of the heavier riffs on here. Also gives Taylor a chance to shine his vocal range with a Stone Sour esq interlude. But what starts out with promise becomes a slog that is a challenge to hang on throughout. Snuff seems like it was put here just to show the band's range. Or really Taylor's raw vocal ability. No denying the dude has a great voice. This is a surprisingly tender song following Wherein Lies Continue. This album is a lot longer than it has any right being. There are a few standout tracks, but most of this falls into a blah wall of sound for me. Individual songs are long ranging from 4 minutes to almost 7 minute sludge fests. There isn't anything that's outright bad, but there isn't much to come back for. I'm somewhere between a 2 and a 3 on this one. Gonna go with a 3 because while it was way too long, I think they do decent service and show some incredible range without ever being outright offensive.
There's definitely aspects on Slipknot that I enjoy. The drums, bass, and guitar are enjoyable. The singing is not. I have never been a fan of the edgy nu-metal bands singers, but if you eliminated vocals, this would be an awesome album to listen to. Gehenna was a change of pace, but I didn't like that song, so it doesn't get brownie points. Snuff was another change of pace, although a bit too emo for my tastes. It sounds like a buzz ballad. All Hope is Gone is probably my favorite off the album. Good message, great drums, and I appreciate the beat switches throughout. Overall I love the energy that this album showcases. I also understand the message that this album is trying to get across, but it's not expressed in the way that I find appealing; which is why I feel like Slipknot and bands like them are popular across "misunderstood" people. This album is in potential 4 star territory for me, but I really have to knock it down for how off putting the singing is and how long the album goes. Definitely some bright spots that I really like in this album, though.
The best heavy metal I’ve listened to, for whatever that’s worth.
Honestly not bad
Too heavy but listenable
D'Perkussion 👍 Dä Rescht. Nöd so mis. 3 Sterne. Ohni dä Drummer wäreds sogar nur 2 Stern.
Not bad but didn't hit home for me. I like my angry loud music but this felt monotonous by the end
Inte så dåligt som jag trodde
The mix of vocal styles grated a bit on me. I prefer the more melodic tunes, but it didn't stand out as an album.
slipknot is not really ever going to be my thing — i hate their general aesthetic, and i feel like a lot of the vibe flows from the aesthetic. with that being said, this album is very technically good. it’s just not enjoyable for me
If this is your jam, fine. It's a particular thing and maybe you like that thing. I don't love it myself, some of it is ok. Objectively speaking, though, this album is not the pinnacle of anything or going in a new or interesting direction. Which is to say, I don't think it belongs on this list. Best songs: Sulfur, Vendetta.
Det blir for intenst for meg, men ikke umulig å lytte på en gang i blant.
Honestly thought I would HATE this but I’m not upset by it.
Not being able to understand the lyrics takes away from a big part of the music. I imagine if I was a bigger fan of this genre, I would be able to understand them easier, so I won’t hold it against them as it is, at times, intelligible. The chords and structures are creative and exciting. There is a good bit of range in here, especially towards the latter half, which helps. I enjoyed this album, I’ll listen to some of these songs again, but probably not all in one sitting. 3/5
A mid tier Slipknot album paling in comparison to Slipknot and Iowa. An attempt to move into a more mainstream sound whilst attempting to keep some of the Iowa sound, albeit less raw. Some good songs, with some ruined by too much playtime (psychosocial/ dead memories)
I can't necessarily defend this opinion, but guys I didn't hate it. The version I listened to is for sure too long, there's too much similarity from song to song, yes the production is weak and yes it is just anger from start to finish, with very little nuance about what it actually is that they're so angry about. But goddamit I would've loved this if I was 13 in 2003 or whenever. You can't say it's not heavy. And you can't say there aren't melodies there. Which is, frankly, so so much more than most of what passes for popular hard rock/radio metal right now. I think sometimes about the shit I listened to back when I was a kid and how there were metal bands you could hear on the radio late at night or see occasionally on MTV who seemed to me to actually be scary. Like they were trying to convey horror through music. And while a band like W.A.S.P seems utterly ridiculous now, you could still wrap your head around the idea of why parents in the 1980s might take a look at that band and go, "Now hey wait. I'm not so sure I want my pre-teen listening to that." To say nothing of a Carcass or Morbid Angel or Napalm Death. Black metal was too obscure to scare the mainstream and most of it didn't sound like music anyway. But Slipknot? I bet they scared some suburban moms and dads around the time this album came out and I'm giving them a star just for trying.
Is it my cup of tepid vomit or whatever it is Slipknot drink instead of tea? No not really. Is it terrible? No I wouldn't say that either. I did however prefer this one to the previous album of theirs I have had on this list.
A little too heavy for me but there are some great songs on here.
Felt appropriate on a drive home on a really dark and gloomy day. Kinda felt like the world was ending. But then I got home and sort of lost interest. This was okay, I don't mind metal, and some of these songs really were great, but it all got a bit grating after a while. Maybe even boring in a weird sort of way? I don't know, there's not much modern metal I seem to enjoy. Gematria (The Killing Name) was excellent though. Real thrash metal vibes. Favourite: Gematria (The Killing Name)
I have never been the biggest slipknot fan but I liked it more than I thought. Especially the songs which are not that much nu metal.
3.5
I think I liked this, but will need to listen to it again at the gym instead of at my desk on a sunny day...
I've definitely heard this band's name for at least a few years, but I don't recall having listened to them or their songs before. These performers are incredibly skilled, no doubt. Some of the tracks are a bit too thrashy and shouty for my own personal tastes, but in the right mood, I can hear that I'd like them. Some of the other tracks are less in my face and I enjoyed those.
Second half ain’t the one. Not their best album. Absolute head turners at the time. Nothing but respect. Especially for that one member who wears a clown mask and his job is to hit a bin with a baseball bat. Legends really. Not to be fucked with so I hear. Sot Gematria Sulfur Psychosocial Dead memories. 3/5
This really surprised me. I didn't mind it. Although it wasn't my usual cup of tea I found it more melodical and interesting than I thought it was. That being said I'd happily never hear it again.
I stopped listening to Slipknot a while before this and while I'm probably not gonna get back into them, this had some solid tracks
Great, hard album. Not my cuppa but good
its metal does have its good moments though
Actually surprised myself by enjoying this!
A very strange inclusion, this is objectively the worst of their first four albums. There are some great songs on here, but there are some proper duds as well
I've always liked Psychosocial but don't really get the rest of the album
Live this is really something. At home? Not as much.
Sounded okay, but would not seek it out. The heavier bits reminded me of Sepultura.
Not bad! Normally I’m not as drawn to 90s heavy rock, but this album has a range of riffs, rhythms, a blend of yelling and melodic vocals, and actual songwriting similar to Metallica in some vague regard.
Got off to a rough start but ended up dialing in the djent near the end. Don’t think the falsetto vox are Feldman’s strong suit, but when the band locks in around an uptempo riff with the heavy vocals things click.
Took a while to get through this one, it was hard to find the right moment to listen to it! I found it a bit of a mixed bag, some good songs, some cringy. A bit too long imo, but more varied than I was expecting.
slipknot is underrated, this go hard :fire:
I gotta admit, I am completely trashed while listening to this one. Absolutely loved it. But I am no state to give a fair review sooooo 3/5
With "Gematria" and "Sulfur", you can hear Slipknot ditching their hip-hop elements (save for the small record scratching in Sulfur) in favor of a more traditional thrash style reminiscent of Metallica or Pantera. Yet these retain the alt-rock elements of nu-metal for the melodic verses of most of their songs, as well as the basis of their singles "Dead Memories" and "Snuff." This is one of the weaker albums, with some pretty annoying and uninteresting tracks, and many others not living up to the anger and expression of their self-titled or Iowa. This is one of their most accessible albums, which memorable hooks in most of the tracks that could draw in people trying to get into metal. It's polished with cool production techniques that add to the horror elements they portray. Vocalists give a hell of their performance and perform their roles of providing order and chaos to each of the tracks as appropriate. I'm a huge fan of the rapid drumming and distorted guitar solos. Also a fan of how most of the songs evolve in several segments, maintaining the audience's attention which is helpful since metal songs tend to be too fast and abrasive for most audiences to keep track of. The first side is pretty good, but again nothing stands out like their hits from their previous albums. "Vendetta" has a few cool parts, and I really like the climactic ending, but it's otherwise the most forgettable. The next two tracks "Butcher's Tale" and "Gehenna" are highly experimental, and also very divisive among the fan base. "Butcher's Tale" is all over the place and grating, and I do agree that it's a miss, but it is interesting nevertheless. "Gehena" on the other hand is my favorite song off the album. I'm obsessed with the spooky atmospheric horror elements of the song, and I wish there were more tracks like it. My only complaint is that the instrumental is pretty tame and not multi-layered like many of the other to justify its 7-minute length. "This Cold Black" and "Wherein Lies Continue" are pretty forgettable filler besides a couple cool parts. "Snuff" is my least favorite track, essentially overdramatic post-grunge with a cool guitar part in the middle. The titular closer is pretty good but feels really weird having the tamest are hardest tracks next to each other.
A LANDSHARK favourite jam. He blasts this on his CD Walkman while going about his biting the heads off humans business. Apart from that, it's nowhere near Slipknot's best album, an odd choice for this list.
This is a wild one. A bit harder than I listen to now, but in my younger days I would have been cranking this.
All Hope Is Gone is a good album by Slipknot but definitely not their best. This was well into their career and their style changed a little on this album. Silver and psychosocial are decent more mainstream hard rock songs. Having s chorus that is actually sung isn’t very metal but it makes them easier to listen to. There’s a lot of typical metal stuff in here but it’s not done as well as iowa or Slipknot. Just like SOAD’s album it’s interesting why this one was picked for Slipknot over some of their others. Still would revisit some of the songs from this one. 7.1/10
All Hope is Gone is the fourth album by American heavy metal band Slipknot. This album was a departure from the nu metal genre as the band embraced groove metal instead with elements of death & thrash metal. It was critically successful, making it to the top of the Billboard 200 chart, and being certified platinum in the US & Canada. This album was a little more experimental than the band's previous ones, but also darker & heavier. It gave fans & new listeners each something to enjoy from this album. I liked how hard & gritty some songs could be and then things would slow down and actually make you feel something before turning up the rage again. I'm usually not a fan of metal, but albums like this are the exception.
Not really my music, but this album made me understand it's appeal.
Ik ben totaal geen liefhebber van dit soort muziek, maar de melodietjes zijn soms best leuk, en het geheel stoort me niet. ***
Probably would have enjoyed this a lot more as a kid. Feels unnecessarily angsty to me now! Unlikely to return any time soon, but great playing.
Probably Slipk ot's worst album, still better than a lot 9f music 9ve heard on this play list so far though.
Ágætis plata. Leita ekki sérstaklega í Slipknot reglulega, en það má alveg dilla sér við þetta.
a really good album. i would honestly rate it higher if i wasn’t taking my own personal taste in music into account. this is a very cohesive album, and the last part of it really sold it for me
On personal taste it’s 3 stars but from an objective stand point it’s a 4 or a 5.
I like metal, but I don't really like Slipknot that much, therefore this album was mostly just okay. The only song I kinda actually like is "Sulfur" because Joey Jordison's drumming is fantastic, and it's pretty good if not underutilized throughout this album. The stuff that sounds overtly "numetal" on this album also brings it down in my eyes. This is exemplified by the annoying and cringey record scratching that dips into the abomination that is rap rock. This album is also super long. It has just as many tracks as a pop album, but each is almost twice as long. My problems with this album are capped off with most of the ending tracks devolving into embarrassing "emo" tracks with lyrics that sound like they came from a 14-year-old after their first break up with a person they had been with for like 2 weeks.
Feels like silly macho music, but probably underestimate them
There are two Slipknot albums in this list and neither of them are The Subliminal Verses, which is my favourite and probably the one most deserving of inclusion. All Hope Is Gone is okay, certainly something I want to listen to more than 50% of this list, but it's not Slipknot at their best. It's a low 3 without any proper standout tracks except maybe Sulfur, but it wouldn't make a top 10 Slipknot songs list.
I’m sure this band is doing exactly what it set out to do, and it seems they’ve been fantastically successful at it. Not for me though, one could go back and pull out all the things I’ve mentioned not liking about metal and string them together and you’ve got Slipknot. The skill of execution and focus here prevents me from giving it the 2 stars I feel in my heart, though.
Corey has a fantastic singing voice and there is some melody to this album, also the drums are fantastic. But it does feel pretty overall edgelord.
Pretty good but not really my thing
What I imagined
Odd choice for a slipknot album. Not their best but still has a lot to offer
Decent heavy metal album but I hate heavy metal so… 😂
Amazing drumming. Not too sure about the dual vocalists. Pick one? Heavy but not Helium!
Dope
This is really not my jam. I didn't hate it all, but much of it was tolerable at best for me. Also, why did it have to be so loooooooonnnnnnnngggggggggg?????
I was prepared to suffer through this for an hour based on some of the band's visual imagery but then it went in some unexpected directions and I ...did not hate it. There's lots of screaming and ridiculous speed but then, all of a sudden, a shift into melodic singing or a groovy rhythm. Lyrically, the band punches up (or in), not down --- they're mad but they seem take it out on appropriate targets. I'm unlikely to choose to listen to this again but happy to have had my expectations surpassed today.
Much more accessible and melodic than their first two albums, but that’s usual for a lot metal bands as they often mellow as they mature I think. Snuff and Gehenna the best two tracks for me.
i dont know enough about metal to critique this enough
Once again, not really my genre, and all the songs sound the same to me. It's decently well-done given that, but still.
Not my favorite album but not bad
It's hard to hold the knowledge that this band is from Iowa in my head when I listen to this frightening cacophony.
The first two tracks I was surprised I didn't hate them, but as the album went on I got a bit more exhausted. It's at least moving away from nu-metal clichés but it's still groove metal... I get why some people like it but it's definitely not my thing when I want music that goes hard. For what it's doing it does well though, but it's not for me.
I like this one a lot more than the debut. The second listen really grew on me. Fave tracks Psychosocial, Gehenna, Vermillion Pt 2 - Bloodstone Mix, 'Til We Die.
Hmmm, not as nu metally as I feared, so I didn't hate it... ...didn't get a lot out of it either. "Gehenna" sounds like they really want to be QotSA, heh. Fave track - "Gematria (The Killing Name)" - that was just straight up thrash! 🤘
Solid metal. Could have listened to a few fewer tracks
Metal mask wearers stretch their wings and try to build in a mix of thrash, sludge, psychedelia, pop/rock and a ballad. Not bad at all. Best Tracks: Gematria (The Killing Name); Psychosocial; Butcher's Hook;
I mean I can see how some people would like this but this just isn't for me. 6/10
can appreciate it for what it is, i just have never been into metal. i can tell this is good metal, but there's nothing that sticking. But I liked Snuff!
I support this music. If it helps one angsty teen process his anger in a way that doesn't end in a school shooting, it's a win. Does everybody need to hear it before they die? No. It wasn't as bad as I expected it to be, though. Best track: All Hope is Gone
