A bit on the shorter side unfortunately. But a good effort.
Seminal hardcore album.
me gusta más beber que qué me griten
Feels ahead of their time! I found some of it kinda sounded the samey to me
This is like being an American playing your first game of Senior Whale Shit Hockey in Canada. New to the town, you joined a local sports team as a way to meet people and hopefully make some friends. But the game has started, and everyone is way better than you expected. Thrown into the game with the third line, you feel off the pace and nervous that you can’t contribute. You resort to the one thing you do know, and start a fight. Coming back into the game after your five for fighting, you just start laying the opposition out. No interest in getting the puck, or even really defending, you just try to check as many players as you can. At the end of the game, you feel you have made enough of a contribution until your captain comes over, tells you that you’re softer than ten-ply, punches you in the dick and hands you a beer. Then it’s off to the home team’s favourite bar. They tell you it has been rebuilt since they got so dunk they burned it down, and it is looking great. Once again, you feel out of place.
The shape of punk to come. Wish I could understand the words better.
Good punk, but no as appealing to me as others of their time.
3/5 good punk vibes
I was not previously familiar with the album, and I'd heard of Minor Threat but did not know any material. This was very short, basically EP length. But it packs a lot of punch into that time. While this is not something I would normally seek out, I feel I owe it another listen.
Short n sweet, love a 20 min punk album
Fast, energetic, and hard. This sounds like an album from the mid 90s. It’s amazing how much they influenced the hardcore punk scene. I love the bass lines.
Solid punk songs with fast riffs
Was gonna give this a 2 but this would go so hard live, it’s mosh pit fighting music! Streaming it just ain’t the same sometimes. Someone making this list really likes hardcore punk
7/10 Buen album, ritmos mas intensos, no me encanta el género pero bastante bien la verdad, esta logrado y todo bien unido
Good, angsty hardcore punk. Reminds me of my misspent youth.
Punk rock is kind of hit or miss to me, but this one is good.
Por favor, eliminen ya este género musical de la faz de la Tierra. Simplemente me agota demasiado.
Maybe a bit more hardcore than I care for, but I can appreciate punk for what it’s trying to do even if the music isn’t always my thing
hell yea
I probably should've listened to my Ex girlfriend that Punk is amazing but Nooo, I had to think it was simplistic & all sounds the same. I mean, it does sound all the same at times but you can get your message out or even your angst out. Just fast angsty music played at break neck speed. Short, sweet & to the point. I hate my lungheadedness of my youth. 3

Less than 22 minutes! From "Look Back & Laugh": "What can we do, what can we do?"
Go, go, go. Short and intense.
Rating: 2.75/5 Favorite song(s): not sure any stuck out to me in particular Review: I’m trying to balance objectivity and subjectivity in my reviews the best that any person can. I just cannot enjoy the sound of punk, and this album was no different. It sounded incredibly grating to my ears, especially the vocals. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the lack of political statements in the lyrics, because that’s kind of the only thing punk is good for to me. Instead, this album seemed to wallop about youth frustrations and feeling different, which comes off a bit whiny. The frontman of this band grew up in Glover Park, D.C., an affluent white suburb. So, his band suffers from the same affliction many other hardcore projects do. It’s simply not that interesting to hear a rich suburban kid groan about being hurt and feeling misunderstood. It’s also interesting that the punk movement is so against the trust fund hippies that ran off to cosplay peace and love… when they often aren’t very far behind themselves. I have respect for punk as a political movement. Especially local hardcore scenes, which feel much more authentic than this record or something like Sex Pistols. I just wish they could put their politics into something that didn’t sound so terrible, lol. One redeeming feature of this album is the musicianship. The drummer is actually really good, and there are some good bass lines. I found their sound to be a little more instrumentally evolved than other punk I’ve heard. I appreciated that, because a lack of instrumental skill makes this genre straight up unlistenable to me. In doing research about this project, I’ve gained some respect for it based on how influential it is: “its influence is notorious in future bands that would boost the youth crew movement, also in other genres such as grunge, post-hardcore, 1990's skate punk and thrash metal, as well in the development of the New York hardcore music scene and aesthetics style” (Wikipedia). The problem is, I don’t like any of these subcultures or enjoy the sound of any of these music styles. So, all in all, the album gets a few points for being instrumental to influencing a subculture that I don’t care about. It’s a worthwhile piece of music history, but I’m not a fan of how it sounds. Maybe someday I’ll hear a punk project that makes me “get” it, but that day was not today. I did rate it a 3, because I feel like it has more value than the records I’ve rated 2s. It’s a 1 on a scale of whether or not I’d enjoy listening again, though. Listen again?: No
Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: ? Very short album. Only 21 minutes makes it one of if not the shortest album I've come across on the list (so far). I can see this album being a important piece of music for the punk genre, but I can't really appreciate it. It's a little grating and not too exciting. It does however remind me of playing Tony Hawk's pro skater, and I suspect Minor Threat has influenced a lot of the 90s and 2000s emo/alt/post-hardcore bands like Blink 182, Coheed and Cambria, Sum 41, The Offspring, Green Day, etc. etc.
dao bih čak i trojku jer je simpatično i kratko, ali ne valja ovo... dat ću evo ipak trojku, štajaznam
Gloriously short and furious true punk.
Hardcore can be fun too! I listen to the whole discography album - 26 tracks in the space of 10. In My Eyes FTW!
Some decent tracks
Я получил ровно то, на что рассчитывал. Экспрессию, агрессию и матюки. Под альбом приятно работать:)
an EP not an album? but sooooo punk highlights: Think Again
I liked it more than I expected to, the drums are so good.
Not my style.
not an all day music
I thought I was going to love this one from the first sonic blast. If I encountered it at sixteen I surely would have. I remember all the skater kids at my high school wearing minor threat t-shirts but I never ventured far enough off the path to spend my allowance on one of their tapes. Very good and punchy, a punk aesthetic that is right up my alley. I don't think I can go quite to 4 stars only because there wasn't any particular part of the album that stood out for me - it had some variation from the speed punk in parts but nothing that I'll be playing back in my head later (at least after this listen). !RemindMe to listen again in a few weeks. 3.8
*Thought I'd really like this because how much I love Fugazi. But Ian's voice permeates so much more in the dynamics of that group than with Minor Threat. Marking this one for a relisten to pick up on lyrics, which I know are extremely important. * 3/5
It was a great album to push through and finish a day lacking motivation. Well timed!
For a 20 minute album, I was suprised it started running out of steam after about 15 minutes
I’m with everyone else. 20 minute albums should be more present. Not always, but sometimes it just works. Knew the name of the band, but not too familiar with songs, so I’m here for it 🤘🏻it is what it is. Good energy, pretty brutal and fierce. There’s a time and a place and I’m nearly there! Much prefer to Black Flag for some reasons. A bit more rawness and nuance but it’s still quite an onslaught offer even 4-5 tracks! As I say, does what it is well, but not sure how often I’d come back to it (3.5)
Short and sweet. Just the blast I needed to kick start the morning. Look a little deeper beyond all the dumb ass punk attitude and there's a little more going off here. Musically, Minor Threat are very good at what they do. They understand the genre and its limitations, but push it a little further. Sounding DIY, but playing with skill - it's a tricky feat to achieve. Impressive.
not my thing, but it's objectively good.
Another one…precursor to a lot. Dug it.
A great punk album, not one I'd put on to listen to all at once and would have to be in the mood for it but it's super fun. Really loved the last track 'Cashing in'
Wow I had totally forgotton about these guys Such a treat to hear their energy and anger again!
A 20-minute album always gets at least 2*, and this had some fun songs
they don't care and that's nice
Pretty good! 3
Wasn't really interesting to me, but didn't drag on as other albums have
Maybe a little too hardcore for my liking, but also really fast which is one of the main reasons I would listen to something like this
Love me some punk
Landmark record. Not my thing but I can see why it makes the list. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.
Held my interest during its short run time. But won’t listen again
Not my usual thing but totally get why it’s on the list.
Fun. Made me rebel against my parents and throw things out of a hotel window.
Of all the scenes in music history, the 80's DC punk scene is hardest for me to really grasp. It just doesn't add up for me. None of the records of that era are as good as what the Stooges were able to accomplish 10 years prior.
Is “Sob Story” in on the joke?
A staple from my early teenage skater years. As good as this style of punk gets. 3.75
🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽 on the intense end of my punk scale but enjoyed it, didn’t add any songs
Ok
Top off the jeep summer driving music
I’m no fan of punk/hardcore so I feel I can’t really judge this in an informed way, but I expected it to be unpleasant and grating and didn’t find that to be the case. It’s alright, not something I would seek out again but for fans of the genre I can understand this EP being highly rated.
muchos gritos pero se disfruta
31/12/2025 (happy almost new year!) 1. betray - very fast drums! liking the chorus. maybe too much energy for me though. going from yesterday's album to this is giving me whiplash. liking the shift towards the end, more groovy. 2. it follows - the bass at the start! guitar is realllly great. not a fan of the shouty vocals, but i understand why people would like it. like the whistling at the end *3. think again - the guitar at the start rocks.... can hear the bass in this one more :) the guitar is really great, warming up to the vocals. just got to the bass solo! *4. look back & laugh - guitar intro is great again. liking the speaking vocals, but still not the biggest fan of the shouting. drumming is really nice. bass is great. warmed up to the vocals. liking the bits out of the chorus. a lot more optimistic than i was expecting from a punk album, admittedly though, i don't know much at all about hardcore. 5. sob story - currently relistening because i was follow along with the lyrics, got distracted and lost where i was and could not understand any of the words he was saying. too american for me. bass is really great in this album, thought it'd be more like metal where i couldn't hear it at all. 6. no reason - again, bass is really nice. guitar's really nice. bass is insane! the vocals throughout this album sometimes get a bit quiet and hard to hear. the past two songs haven't been synced with the lyrics and i cannot understand what is happening lol. 7. little friend - guitar nice. getting a bit sick of the shouting vocals, but with songs this short i can't really complain. loving the stopping and starting. bass is also great again. lots of tempo changes :) 8. out of step - had a break to watch corrie lol. bass is realllly nice again. his voice is nice when it's speaking, but it's not my thing when he's shouting. also why i don't like metal. drums are reall great as well. *9. cashing in - liking the guitar in this one. like when it goes higher. guitar riffs are great. wizard of oz mention <3 even though i like punk music, i've never really listened to hardcore, mainly sticking to uk punk. wasn't sure about the shouty vocals at the start, but grew on me throughout, even if they're still not really my thing. short and sweet. will def give another relisten soon :)
Great album for people trying to get into punk but as a seasoned straight edge enjoyer, this was quaint.
I can see why some people really love this. It’s not for me, though.
Crazy that this came out in 83, but I'm not sure that makes it any good. Sounds exactly like all the boring hardcore that came out 15 years later.
Mid/high 2? Not my vibe but nothing "bad"
I enjoyed listening to this throughout, but nothing stood out. Maybe the last song if anything. Would I revisit it? Maybe. Probably. Is it a generational, monumental ground breaking album? I don't think so.
I like this album a little short and I enjoyed the last track
Reminds me of GreenDay. Kinda liked it
3 out of 5 Bringing back that 80s punk. Reminds me of the skateboard days
End of last song, cashing in, sounds like the guitar riff from green day holiday. I bet billy joe has heard that one before.
3.5
Yep. I like it. No mucking about. Got something to say and somewhere else to be. There’s even some music going on there too.
solid bitta punk
Hard and fast but not for long just like me ayy lmao
Новаторство для своего времени, но мне больше Fugazi нравятся.
betray. wür gern 4 geh wils eifach cool isch aber ich glaub es gfallt mer 3
love it, but honestly all the songs sound almost identical.
Just not for me anymore. Maybe when I was younger but it's too punk for me now.
Cool punk but honestly most of it just become a guy yelling over some loud guitars and drums. I suppose that’s what punk is but I guess I would’ve liked a bit more melody to it.
Really fun. Sounds like every punk band I knew at uni. I finally get it
Punk. I have never heard of this band before. I quite like the music but their singer, though recognizable, starts to annoy me after ab while, aber that while it's within the albums short runtime of ca. 21 minutes. The music is cool.
11/19/25. Cool to dive into DC Hardcore more, realizing that I’ve heard the dinger across multiple bands previously. This one is quick to the punch and doesn’t let up, and thought it was decent. Need to listen more.
Okay. A lot for first thing in the morning.
classic hardcore. I like their earlier stuff better though
I may not be a punk fan, but I can respect the craft and the messaging. 21 minutes is the perfect length for this album—just enough to enjoy it but it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Guitar work is good, and I like the driving force of the drums.
Just fun punk. The short kind that leaves you wanting more, not the long albums that go on way too long
For a punk album, it was good. Could almost hear the roots of sublime or Green Day in them.
Not really my thing, but one of the more enjoyable hardcore punk albums I've encountered here. 3*
Liked this one, especially the length compared to yesterday’s! Short and sweet punk album
I appreciate the influence on punk, but it was a bit too much for me
3.0
Fast and furious Hardcore Punk, album is nice and short. Ok listen, not my usual thing.
Short and sharp (apparently the second shortest album in the challenge???) I liked it, although it sounded like pretty generic punk to me. There is a lot of punk on this list!
I like this bit of punk and this was no different. Raw and energetic and fun.
It's tempting to give these guys four stars simply for the relief of a short and sweet album after too many double albums in a row. But that's not fair to them or the other genuinely four-star-worthy albums, so I'll just express my thanks here (where no one will ever notice). I'm not a huge punk connoisseur, so this album didn't do all that much for me, and I can only take it on Wikipedia/"1001 Albums" authority that this was a seminal album for both Minor Threat and the hardcore punk scene (especially the "straight" punk scene). I *can* say I thought the production quality was higher than some of the punk albums we've gotten in this collection, and I applaud their commitment to keeping the songs in the 2-4 minute range. And some impressive bass playing in "Think again" and "Sob story" (the latter almost verges on having a tune amongst the pounding noise, much like the well-done ironic "Cashing in").
Solid hard hitting punk. The tempos are super fast and the drumming is aggressive. However, the performances are not as tight as on their other EPs and the longer songs don't really highlight their strengths, but rather a lack of diversity
standard
3.5. The 0.5 comes from having inspired some of my favourite bands.
Minor Threat has never been my favourite band. It's probably the ideology, being not straight edge myself. It won't be the first or last time I listen to this album though.
An entire album being 21 minutes long is so punk. Minor Threat is so punk. Dugga-datta-dugga-datta is so punk.🤘🤘🤘🤘
Pretty solid but I am not super into this genre. Definitely doesn’t overstay its welcome and has the right energy. I can see how this must have been very influential.
Decent enough but didn't really excite me.
3.1 stars rounded down.
108/1001 Minor Threat - Out of Step Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ✅ It's not often I gravitate towards hardcore punk, but when I do, I tend to enjoy it. This has everything you need - intensity, snottiness and something that doesn't outstay its welcome.
Odd to have an EP on the best albums list but here we are. Solid EP. I’ve always been more of a Fugazi guy than a Minor Threat guy, but enjoyed listening to this.
Good punk
first listen i like the energy but there isn't much here
Fits right in to the "Short, Fast, Loud" segment that used to feature on Triple J. Fun. Refreshing.
Over het algemeen genomen geen onaardig album en het is een genre wat me prima ligt, maar er zit geen enkel nummer bij wat me ook maar een beetje bij blijft. Daardoor kan ik niet hoger dan 3 sterren geven.
In a nutshell: just another punk band? Think again... From Washington DC, may I present the band that popularised the anti-excess lifestyle of straight edge: Minor Threat. What I've learned about punk production from this project is that low quality recording doesn't automatically mean bad. Recording a punk album is simple approach - just hit record and keep up with everyone in the band. It's all energy. Fuck being perfect. The whole kit and caboodle of Out of Step is what we will hear in skate punk, hardcore punk and even pop punk to come. I could hear bits of The Offspring, early NOFX and maybe early Green Day. It's not the punk I gravitate to but I get why it's in the book. Overall: 5/10
Thoroughly punk. Not good, but still great.
для любителей хардкор-панка.
Exactly what you think a punk album from 1984 would be.
Not really me but not bad
Groupe inconnu. Du très bon punk dynamique et assez varié, une bonne découverte. Dommage que ce groupe n’ait pas vécu plus longtemps… Et dommage que ce soit un EP, il est un peu trop court et donc ne rejoindra pas ma collection d’albums ! =>3.5/5
Enjoyed this more than I expected actually. It was fun and energetic and I did not hate the vocals (something I often have with hardcore punk). It’s like 3.5 stars, but I think I’ll round down for this one.
Ja, denne har sine øyeblikk. Full fres og korte låter. Sitter langt inne å gi 4, men vi er ihvertfall på 3.5 her!
fugazi better 3.5
Thats a solid 3.5 from me
Cool energy from the hardcore punk style but I am glad it wasn't too long.
Immediate dive into the deep end of frantic electrified guitar rhythms and raw vocals.
Really fun and not nearly as bad on my migraine as any of the electronic albums
Not a huge minor threat fan but you gotta respect a punk band with a decent philosophy.
it's the 80s alt rock/punk sound to a T - based on the blurb for this album, it's probably because the sound has been copied and imitated by countless acts.
I haven't heard this in a long time. It holds up well and gets in and out quickly while making a lasting impression.
This is some serious 80s punk
I don't know if I have much to say here. Minor Threat is legendary, and they should be. This is a classic punk record for good reason. It's not exactly for me, but I certainly appreciate the crazy musicianship happening on each track here. I think the vocals are underproduced, the album is very one-dimensional, and the runtime almost doesn't qualify this to even be a full-length record. Sometimes opinions are hard. The world's on fire. Listen to the music you want.
I’m in step with the importance of this band and their contributions, even if the music isn’t something I keep in rotation.
the nice thing about hardcore punk is that it never outstays it's welcome, this album was done before i could even finish making my breakfast and i enjoyed making my eggs to this
7 What’s he going on about
Pretty generic punk. Honestly can’t really distinguish between this and other stuff from the genre.
A bit minor indeed. Not bad though.
Decent punk
Hardcore punk. Not quite my thing but can see the appeal. Cashing In is the highlight track on the album. 6/10
Raw hardcore punk, at least it's pretty short so it doesn't become too annoying
Kinda funny but didn’t like it that much 2.5
This album was very punk rock, and I can see how it may have paved the way for others. Fun guitar riffs, music, and lyrics. Cashing In was the standout for me and a good close to the album. Overall appreciated the listen, but wouldn’t likely revisit again.
#684. Why listen to The Clash or The Sex Pistols when this exists? 3/5: it's just better
Favorite Track: Cashing In
Pretty generic punk sound, but it's ok. Not much to say, although why this one is includef over all the others I have a hard time telling.
Definitely not my kind of thing but I appreciate it for what it is
This hardcore punk album sounds like the other hardcore punk albums which sound like hardcore punk albums. Sometimes I just want more spice in my life than this. When is enough enough? It's still a fun genre if not very diverse, not bad music
-damn they were MAD when they made this. as they should be -this was really interesting to listen to, i love when music gets this intense. hit especially hard after getting to listen to another rlly good punk album yesterday -apparently it’s considered an EP so who knows why it’s on here. quite good tho, 3.5 stars -Favorites are Think Again and Out Of Step
Yup, that’s an American punk band. Standard.
Good energy! The instrumentation is fun. I don't really like the vocals very much, but they don't get in the way too much.
++: It Follows, Think Again, Sob Story, Out of Step, Cashing In +: Betray, Little Friend +-: Look Back and Laugh, No Reason 6,0/10
Definitely the sound that comes to mind when one thinks of hardcore punk. Lots of energy but not a lot of variance from one track to the next. But that’s punk, right?
The vocals are out of sync with the music, but that’s the point?
Oui mais non. Pas vraiment aujourd'hui, je suis pas très fâché/révolté. Surtout fatigué, ça m'aide pas. No reason, la basse est très grave.
Seulement 21 minutes, et j'étais quand même épuisé à la fin.
A solid release from an undoubtedly classic, integral band within the timeline of hardcore punk. However, despite this being Minor Threat's longest effort, clocking in at 21 minutes, I've seen Out of Step being described as an EP far more often than I have as an album, and therefore it is a somewhat debatable inclusion in a list of 1001 Albums. I'd also argue, if you're going to acknowledge Minor Threat in this list, that the debut S/T EP was more of a landmark statement and of greater importance to the development of hardcore, as to render it essential listening. Out of Step takes the band's sound into a more measured, less seething direction, hinting towards the later post-hardcore of Fugazi in patches. However, is it quite as enduring as the debut EP? I'm not so sure.
The aggressive energy of this album is really striking. You get a little tired of listening to the same song over and over but the whole thing is only 20 minutes.
A 3, but barely
Pretty good
outro punky not bad
Favorite: Look Back and Laugh
Fun, good, won’t ever put it back on.
Had a bit of groove, but not my kinda metal
This has gotta be the shortest one on here (if not one of). Guitars are really on point and sound great, the whole mix does. (Although I loved it, I can't say the same for the Dead Kennedys one). It feels a lot more inspired by classic rock stuff than the surf rock stuff, although its not too blues, which I think this was kind of a rebellion against that. Not too much else to say other than I really like it, and its really good sounding, especially for this genre which can often sound like live recordings. But its obviously limited due to short length, but it definitely gets the message across. Favorite songs: all. Overall around 6/10
I can appreciate the punk rock angry element paving the way for the alt music weve all come to love
Fast loud a raucous, what’s not to enjoy!
Enfin un album de moins de 50 minutes! J'suis pas assez en colère pour vraiment apprécier la musique dessus, mais juste pour la franchise de pas étirer plus la sauce, ça mérite un 3.
It was fine. The songs got a bit repetitive after a while.
Short, snappy and good. But nothing ground breaking. A 3.5 but on the 3 side.
Short and "sweet"
I really wanted to like this, I like punk, I like hardcore even but nothing really hooked me here and I gave a couple listens. Really, tight band overall. Sorry dudes , 3 stars
Rv/g
Cool but not great
Nice punk album buy nothing too special
This is some classic hardcore/punk. Not always my style these days, but there was a time and place for it. Love that they're fast and hard.
These men are very angry.
This is hard to rate. I love Minor Threat and their raw energy. Is this great music? No. Would I take it on a desert island? Probably not. Is it a shining example of what it’s trying to achieve? Oh yeah.
Pretty decent punk, but suffers from a lot of the problems with the genre.
Didn’t love it some decent songs
J - 3/5 Best Track - "Look Back, & Laugh" F - DNL
Cool I like some punk. First two seven inches is better but this is cool
I get it's the point but it gets to the point where the melody gets lost in the noise. I do appreciate it for what it did.
Maybe the first EP I’ve seen on the list? Good energy and snappy production, it was a good entry (3.5/5)
Tony hawk pro skater, hot topic, zumiez 2005, hell yeah
Blistering hardcore punk rock. Absolute hurricane of an album. While not my thing, I do appreciate this one being really well done and short (more than 22 min of that is exhausting).
3.5 short. Great.
Loud, fast, and angry, but not all that interesting to want to hear again.
What on its surface appears to be a hardcore punk rock album is in fact a hardcore punk rock album. Which really is the essence of punk- it is what it is, and is as in your face about it as it can be. If this is what you're looking for in music, you'll definitely find it here. The album does what it does well. But does that make it one of the greatest of all time? Is it one of the greatest punk albums of all time? It definitely seems to have had a wide influence, as the sound and style persisted and can be heard in some music today. Part of its strength is in its brevity; only three songs run longer than 3 minutes and the whole album is barely more than 20 minutes long. I think if it had gone on longer, it could've gotten tiresome. Even so, it's appeal is likely limited by the aforementioned style and there being little diversity in the energy of the songs. Overall, I have to give it a 2.75/5. Because, while not necessarily great, it's good. And while not bad, it's not great. I would probably rank it higher if I was more of a punk.
Hardcore Punk that sounds like every Hardcore Punk band out there. Good stuff.
Basis Werk des Punk-Rocks. Gute Ansätze aber insgesamt zu unausgereift.
Big fan of 70’s 80’s punk but this was a bit generic for me. Great for cleaning the house or banging your head against the wall, but not something I’d listen to again. For me there’s better punk out there.
it was a fine punk album. but let's be honest, nothing particularly groundbreaking.
This rips - manic energy with a little bit of sophistication and clever songwriting. Favourite tracks: Betray, Think Again, No Reason, Little Friend
I didn’t realize this was their only album. A short 22 minutes of punk goodness. Fast, loud, and angry. I like it.
Small, but nice little punk album that is enjoyable with simple brilliance. They would be brilliant hearing them live.
YEAAAAAH
some hardcore rock music! nothing really stood out but for sure a head banger
Not my cup of tea
🎧Wtf this is an EP, not an album
custom_rating: 6.5
If I'm not mistaken, this was one of the bands that really helped shape and inspire the American punk scene, along with kind of being the forefathers of the Straight Edge movement. Anyway, like most punk, this is extremely basic. It sounds like any group of 3 people who are minimally competent with their instrument of choice, and a random singer/yeller who could literally be anyone. That aside, it's not terrible. some of the songs are pretty catchy, actually. I'm never blown away by the technicality of any of it, but it's fine. It starts to get a little same-y, but one thing I love about punk is that the album is only 22 minutes. That's not nearly enough time for me to get super annoyed. 3 stars is about right.
Pretty solid punk rock. Not quite the Clash, maybe closer to eth Ramones without anything catchy.
On paper I should love this. Punk is in my number 5 loved genres, but this just didn't move me. Maybe because I didn't get a word the singer was saying. Will revisit someday. For now a 5. Nothing against it not in favor of it. Null.
Hard to extract much in terms of melody from the dissonance. Still, it's more my lane of punk than the last two records I had (Ramones s/t, Crossing the Red Sea w/ The Adverts). Minor Threat/Black Flag is inseparable in my head from the Freaks and Geeks episode where James Franco tries to go punk. I've read Our Band Could Be Your Life, I understand the significance of these bands and this scene, but in 2025 it all feels just a bit like caricature to me.
Pretty short album. Most of the songs sound similar to each other; no stand outs. Festival background music type music. A bit of a boring album. Wasn't bad but wasn't great.
This sent me on an exploration of the difference between hard core and punk. Not sure I absorbed it, though
Short and sweet. 3/5
Favorite Track: Cashing In
Somewhere between the ferocity of Minor Threat’s first seven inches and the melodic focus of Fugazi’s debut lies this oddball of hardcore. It’s not the best as the songs and lyrics don’t have the power just right; they’re still being mixed like a live hardcore band. But there’s a glimmer there. MacKaye’s vulnerability is what shines through on this record, pushing beyond the straight-edge manifesto of “Out of Step” and into deeper feelings. There’s ambivalence where there was once dogma, and it’s like watching someone grow up on real time. Unfortunately that means that the songs are scattershot in quality. “Look Back & Laugh” and “Out of Step” are classics, while “Betray” and “Little Friend” capture some of the hardcore vibes. But the value here is seeing a band in flux, and that’s not enough to get a ton of stars.
kinda rips. idgaf about straight edge culture but the bass tone is pretty silly
You can tell from the album cover that they do not go with the flow! I had an OK time listening to this album. I have never liked this genre much as I'm more of a melody/harmony enjoyer than an energy/evocation appreciator. Vocals are good and they are impressively consistent. The few melodic vocal parts help pace it out and offer some respite from the shoutin'. There's something to be said about how honest and genuine the lyrics are, even if I wasn't sold on how it was articulated. In "Think Again" it was interesting how the bass guitar came in and out of the mix and was an interesting way to vary the dynamics. Again, I haven't listened to much punk, but I struggle to see how this would have pushed the envelope in any way.
What's the point in saying anything, these guys don't care what I think! Nothing much to say about it, having largely blurred into a fairly likeable background noise. Sounds like Green Day borrowed (in homage of course) the chord progression at the end of "Cashing In" for the bridge in Holiday. It might just be that it's simple enough that they came up with it independently, but with the duality of the lyrics between the two songs,it fits. Serendipitous to have listened in close succession I suppose.
Hard and fast, just how I like em!
Could probably copy and paste my Fugazi review. Not my thing, but I like the ideas.
Cool stuff.
Well, it was short. Very punk-y. Punches you in the face, then gets out as quick as f**k. Kinda respect that. Top tracks: "Betray," "It Follows," "Cashing In"
When I first listened to this album (a few times) last week, I enjoyed it a fair bit. This week, upon returning to it, I find it a bit abrasive or too DIY. That's probably not too surprising given the lead of Minor Threat, Ian MacKaye, went onto form Fugazi. Both very DIY. And while I think these guys bring a different level of depth to their sound than most 80's punk, it's still very rough sounding. Also, looking back at other reviews, I didn't really love post hardcore except for Fugazi's Repeater. The rest is just a little too raw for me. So is this. I appreciate how we got to post-hardcore (or straight edge) from this hardcore punk band but I think I have to give this album a 3. Cashing In was a great song, but the rest were...shrug.
Fast-paced, energetic, just what you want from a punk album. Pretty bog standard for one though
I don't love Minor Threat as much as some of their contemporaries but still a solid entry in this list.
Пиво - круто Ебаться - круто Кладмен - мудак 7/10
This delivered a much needed speedball energy hit at 9:30 on a Monday morning in the office. Power chords baby!
A solid album, but I'm coming to realize that a lot of the punk I like just happens to be the mainstream stuff. That said, this was still pretty enjoyable, with wild instrumentals and somewhat distant vocal work. It does come off a bit samey, but I like energy. 'Look Back & Laugh' was my fave from this album.
Rocks pretty hard. Not for the faint-hearted.
Well according to Wikipedia this is an EP, which sounds about right as it's only about 20 minutes. It's certainly in yet face.
Raa raa raa something
Short and sweet, screamy shouty, punky punk, pulling no punches, what's not to love?! 🤘 ...cup of tea anyone?
that was fine, it didn’t really catch my attention at all until the very last song.
Fine idk I don’t care about this kind of music
I've seen the storyline played out so many times before. Oh, that goes in there, then that goes in there, then that goes in there, then that goes in there... And then it's over. Oh, what a hell of a show, but what I want to know, what exactly do you do for an encore?' Cause this is hardcore
old punk. 'tis what it is.
Noisy post-punk. I wasn't really in the mood, but I didn't hate it.
Does this achieve what it is trying to achieve? Yes, i think so. Is this made by people under 25 for people under 25 who probably consider themselves angrier and more marginalised than me? Yeah most likely. Is it well performed and produced? I would also say yeah, I think so. Was it brief? Yes most definitely. It almost seemed to me like the album was recorded in order, and their musicianship improved as they went along, as I thought the final 3 songs were the best. The final song, Cashing In, was probably in my opinion the strongest. I'm not entirely sure what to give this as I probably won't come back to it, but I don't think it deserves a 2. I'm gonna give it a 3, but If I was in the target audience, or a bigger fan of the genre, I could see why others may get more from this.
So I haven't done a review on here in a long while because I found RYM but I had to comment on this because Minor Threat is one of my favorite bands of all time. You may ask why then did you give this three stars and that is because this is easily the single worst project they ever released and for some fucking reason it is the one that Robert Dimery picked for the book. I originally assumed no Minor Threat project would be in the book because they never released an album just EPs and singles but Robert made an exception for this project and missed out on putting their self titled EP which is easily the bands most critically acclaimed and most beloved project by fans. It has so many of the most popular tracks like "Minor Threat", "Straight Edge", "Seeing Red", "Filler", "I Don't Wanna Hear It" and "Screaming At A Wall". Instead you pick this EP which is nowhere near on the same level and has just one track that I think most fans would put as a top tier Minor Threat song in "Betray". It is just illogical to pick this EP when the self titled is literally there. I think it is probably because this project is closer to album length but who cares. You are already making an exception since it is an EP you might as well put the bands best project in the book. If you wanted to do it this way then you should have just put the bands Complete Discography compilation album. I get if you don't want to put compilations but this is a different circumstance since the bands whole catalogue is basically the length of a regular album. Just a baffling decision that really does a disservice to one of the greatest punk bands of all time.
pikkusen tota.. pikkanen uhka nämä heh.. uskomaton allegorinen konsepti... musta lammas... juoksee vähä toiseen suuntaan näätkö? smart music... tämä on meidän vastaus monimutkaiselle musiikille!!! extended play albumi ja lyhyitä mätkäisyjä huutaa ja rummut pam pam pam kitara trumm trumm trumm... mitäs sanot tähän? ei ole paljoon vastaan sanomisia ja jos on niin haistaakaaaaa kukkaneeeen kukkaneeen haistakaaa kukkaneeen keskisormet ylhäällä haistakaaaa kukkaneeeeen haistakaaa kukkaaneeeen keskisormet huojuu ja heiluu ylhäällä haistakaaa kukkaneeeen haistakaaa kukkaneeeen hei kaikki liittykää mukaan: haistakaaa kukkaneeeen haistakaaa kukkaneeeeeen haaistakaaa kukkaneeeeen!!!! think again
Another great album to play Tony Hawk Pro Skater to
One Minor Threat song — pretty good Two Minor Threat songs — ok I get it Three Minor Threat songs — ok thats good enough for me for now Album ends — actually I came back around on it
Ok...the EP is better. And Fugazi is FAR better. 3/5
A rough and rowdy hardcore punk EP that is a lot of fun and fizzing with energy, but nowhere near as interesting as MacKaye’s later work with Fugazi
Pretty good, I enjoyed it
Some good punk. The album cover and album title are a bit on the nose 3/5
Nice.
Descent effort
actually ok. alternative tock with a dash of punk
This is everything that hardcore punk does so well. It's got attitude, edge, energy, it sounds angry and it's shorter than 30 minutes. The fact that it's only 22 minutes long definitely works in its favour. It gets in, shouts in your face and gets out again before you have any idea what happened. It's a lot catchier than other punk albums I've heard which surprised me. I'm still not really a punk guy, but I have to say I can see why this is peak hardcore. It's the best punk album I've heard so far and I can't see it being topped any time soon. A 3.5 which I can't do. Probably a 4 on a good day where I need to listen to something fast, loud and rude, but on any other day it's a 3 for me.
The album goes hard, blasts you with all the energy and attitude you'd expect, but also makes time for actual melodies, harmonics, and even guitar solos! A hardcore punk band that actually showcases basic proficiency in playing their instruments? What a pleasant surprise. And after 21 minutes it's all over -short and to the point. If I was more into punk, this would certainly have been a great listening experience. 3.5/5
Album 605 of 1001 Minor Threat -Out of Step (1983) Rating : 4 / 5 Hard punk. The album is described as a "bitter, brilliant eulogy for youthful idealism," capturing the urgency and frustration of the hardcore punk movement. Good listen. Quite short and to the point. My appreciate for punk has grown while listening to the list. This is one of the best I've heard. Seems it is considered a classic in the punk scene.
joyfully noisy without being repetitive like a lot of their peers
3.5 nice brief 22 minute album. Right to the point no fluff
Yep what you’d expect from a hardcore band although I will say it was a little more elaborate than I would expect - like actual structure, cool bass lines, arrangements. Oddly enough this band showed up as a post on my instagram account and I was able to get a little of their background. Apparently one of the first DIY type bands, self promotion etc. Pretty cool stuff.
Betray - 3/5 liked the riff change at about 2 mins It Follows - 1.5/5 Think Again - 4/5 catchy riff and great bass solo half way through Look Back and Laugh - 2.5/5 Sob Story - 2.5/5 No Reason - 2/5 Little Friend - 2.5/5 Out of Step - 3/5 Cashing In - 2.5/5
Definitely a banger this. Reminds me of lots of music I was listening to in the early 80's. Think I'll always have a soft spot for a bit of punk and certainly enjoyed this album. It's nice to see something like this on the list.
Aika kiva. Tiivis kokonaisuus, hyvä. Oman nimen hokeminen vikassa biisissä, erinomaista. Soititmet soi ja huuto ei kuulosta rääynnältä.
Ah youth. This is the soundtrack to diary of ever Gen Xer. In its time and place it was great. Hindsight is a little cringy.
Nothing to write home about, but still an enjoyable listen.
Noisy.
Too much screaming
pros-tracks & album are short. they can play instruments cons-too much screaming w vocals. tracks blended in together
It's low-key absolutely crazy how this sounds like 2000s or later punk. Truly ahead of its time. Aside from that, I don't think it really stands out though. In context of the 80s, and looking at it as an influential album, it's pretty incredible. But musically, comparing it to its contemporaries, it's another punk album without anything particularly special about it. Still good, though! All the songs do kind of blend all together. Favorite Song(s): Look, Back & Laugh
First time hearing this album, but I can already their influences on other bands I've listened to over the years, particularly acts like Suicidal Tendencies and I cannot help but wonder if their sound inspired Chris Vrenna's drum ideas in Nine Inch Nails songs like "Wish" and "March of the Pigs". It feels like Offspring was probably a big fan of this band as well. You can hear this inspiring the earliest years of Metallica's thrash years on albums like KILL THEM ALL. OUT OF STEP is the kind of sound that I respect exists in the world, but also the kind of sound that I don't want to hear daily, so I probably won't be putting this on again real soon. I need a little more melody and harmony in my diet these days, but I probably would have loved this album when I was 13 or 14 and was quite deep into the skating and freestyle world. I particularly would have been attracted to their straight edge mentality. I also respect the rhythmic tightness of this band. Very tidy, given that it is incredibly easy to be sloppy in this genre.
Minor Threat was the first American hardcore band I heard. My brother played in a few hardcore bands in the early 90's, so I watched bands in small clubs and I became desensitized to the harshness of music and became a fan of several bands. I'm not a big fan of the frenzy and anger at shows, but beyond that the music is basically an elevated state of punk played by underrated musicians that often supported social issues and activism. Out Of Step is Minor Threat at their best and in some ways is a critical part of the punk story. The songs are fine and top to bottom is a solid album. You can't overlook that the music becomes sounding samey and similar to other like-minded bands and honestly wondered if I was listening to the Circle Jerks, Black Flag or Minor Threat?
Pretty good hardcore album. 3/5
I'm just not a fan of hardcore punk, or a lot of types of punk when I think about it. Out of Step is a classic example of hardcore punk. It is brash, with discordant music, harsh sounds and vocals that, as in most punk music, is hard to understand and slightly angry. There is some clear skill on display with the quality of the instrumentals, but I'm just not really into punk as a whole, just elements of it. I think every song ends up sounding the same, aside from the first 10 seconds.
Right off the rip, I can tell Offspring were fans of these guys. Maybe AFI, too, but the opening song sounds like an early Offspring song. One could say that they were the Offspring of this music. This is a good follow-up to older punk, or even their first album. It's good for what it is. I really have to be in a mood for this. I'll give it a 3.5.
3/5
This record thrashes. Love the energy and mood on on this one. Punk in its early stages and setting the stage for what’s to come. Solid album.
Mhm I liked a lot the guitar and the style, but the voice was too rough and aggressive, it made it hard to enjoy the music.
As someone who doesn't like punk, this album was not for me but I didn't mind it - I'd put it at 5/10 which is a 3 rating. Rating: 3
I love punk, but not my favourite
personally didn’t LOVE but it is not meant to be loved 🐺 i GET IT and that is enough #inspirational straight edge punk is calling. will you pick up? 3/5
Been a while since we’ve had some hardcore punk on the list. This album reminded me how much I like bands like this. Minor Threat move at a breakneck pace and can get a little sloppy but there’s some great musicianship happening here. The guitar riffs interlock with the bass grooves, and the drums fire like a machine gun, pushing the band to keep up the relentless tempo. But it’s never perfect — they fall slightly out of step with each other, which is just how I like my punk bands. It feels organic and chaotic and raw when you play like that. I love how the bass takes center stage a bunch of times too.
A perfectly good shouty punk album. Only 21 minutes long too!
I think Ian’s songs were more melodic and enjoyable. Probably won’t listen again
jävligt gött ändå
I was not expecting to enjoy this album very much, and on my first listen through my mind didn't change. But the album was so short I played it twice and I connected with it more the second time around. It's a solid little album and they might be playing fast, but they hit their notes for the most part. Lyrics are a lacking a little but great compared to most punk.
I’m not too deep into punk, but if you are I’m sure this is great. It’s not my thing, but not bad either.
Really hype sounding music with vocals that are being shouted and hard to understand over the music sometimes.
I think I've heard this sort of thing before. Not much to distinguish it from a lot of other punk albums in this project. This one lands in the middle for me. I didn't hate it and I didn't love it.
Bah
Was ok classic punk
A little too screamy
This is NOT your average punk album. Oh wait…that’s exactly what this is
pretty repetitive, which wouldn't be a problem if the songs had more energy
A bit shouty for me
It was good, not bad at all. Maybe to wisniwoxneoeizjqpnw in the beginning but the last song is really good. It’s like it starts as a dislocated jaw and then transforms into a soft paper tissue being ripped very gently and into a bee flowing through the flowers. 6.0000000000001/10.
If I was going to pick a Minor Threat album for the list, it wouldn't be this one but still an important album in the evolution of music.
Never heard this before. Not really my kind of music, but this seems a cut above similar music, especially the lyrics. "Goddamn it, we were supposed to stay young"
Never listened before. Better than I thought it would be.
An EP due to playtime, not content, this was a clear factor in the Hardcore scene as noted everywhere. Shoutout to them for taking the risk and pushing the boundary without corrupting the genre
Bueno
La madre del cordero. Un disco y un grupo que sirvió de puente entre el punk de finales de los 70 y la explosión hardrockera y alternativa de finales de los 80. Su influencia es enorme y la de Ian Mackaye aún mayor. Otros discos de 1983: Excelentes debuts de REM, Aztec Camera, Madonna, The The y The Waterboys. Además discazos, en mi opinión, mejores de THE CHAMELEONS - Script of the bridge, Eurythmics- Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN & DOUBLE TROUBLE - Texas flood, Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones, U2 - War , Talking Heads - Speaking In Tongues, New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies, ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN - Porcupine, David Bowie - Let's Dance, Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual, Metallica - Kill 'Em All, e incluso Mike Oldfield- Crises, UB40- Labour of Love, Huey Lewis and The News- Sports, ZZ Top- Eliminator y The Police - Synchronicity
Okiedokie, very screamy
Like other punk albums, seems a bit similar after a while, but decent overall
Fine, and short, which helps when you're behind on albums!
Straight into it! This is right up my alley. I didn't listen Minor Threat in my youth and probably would have appreciated this more when I was 20 rather than 50, but still good. It definitely reminds me of a lot of stuff that came after. Solid, emotive, unpretentious. I like it.
This album is okay. I don't see anything that makes it stand out from other punk albums, so it's a drop in an ocean (in my eyes).
On uncovering “Out of Step” as my next album to listen to, I went through the following three states: mild intrigue and being unable to recall exactly who Minor Threat were; the sinking realisation that they were a preeminent hardcore punk band; sweet relief that their first solo effort is more of an EP at 21 minutes. It’s the perfect capsule for music like this: tight, taut, lean and then done, like a cold shower or blistering fire. Too much longer and I might have lost the will to live. Ian MacKaye’s vocals are high-spirited, but completely indecipherable bar the odd “FUCK”. This is hardly a barrier, though: if anything it drives home the animalistic, primal urgency of these songs. He’s buried low in the mix, as if the production is whipping the band into a frenzy until all comprehension is lost. Despite this, though, the players are deceptively tight: the overdriven bass from Steven Hansgen is a major selling point, particularly in his lead sections in “Think Again” and “No Reason”. There are also various switch ups in groove or tempo (see “Betray” or “Little Friend”). It’s impressive the band committed to distinct movements within such short songs, and it’s more than the Ramones ever managed. Finally, it’s very apt that the catchiest, least thrashy hook comes from a song called “Cashing In”, which suggests Minor Threat are begrudgingly playing the industry’s game. At its end, we can just make out the refrain of “There’s no place like home; so where am I?” Angst, angst, angst.
A good punk album. The opener Betray was good, but the closer Cashing in was great. Some of the songs in the middle were same-y. I may listen again. 3/5.
Sort of weird that I've never heard Minor Threat until now. I would have probably loved this once upon a time.
Was expecting something a little heavier for a straight-edge band but I guess it was early in the scene.
Short and doesn't overstay its welcome. Good sense of humour, but there are stronger punk bands that came earlier
Betray 3.4 It Follows 3 Think Again 3.1 Look Back and Laugh 3.2 Sob Story 3.2 No Reason 2.9 Little Friend 3 Out of Step 3 Cashing In 3.1 Score: 3.1
Hardcore punk is not really my scene, but great bass riffs and for what punk epitomizes, it’s all there. Good music to be pissed too, fast and edgy, but just not my go to listen.
