Reviews (page 5 of 7)
I liked the album but it just didn't feel like a 4. I'll have to check out Minor Threat when I'm in a punk kind of mood.
I would have probably dug this more back in the day when I was grinding on ramps and rails at the skate park. While not a repeat listen today most likely, I do give it some cred for its Punk/Pop influence. I can’t definitively say exactly who it influenced, however , I can’t imagine a world without the likes of drummers such as the great Travis Barker.
A short run album by a short-lived band but with a long reach influence across the entire hardcore movement. This album deserves a shared lane with their D.C. punk rock contemporaries Bad Brains and contains a lot of the same dynamics and tightness. Punk was not dead then and upon relisten is not dead now.
Love this shit! No holds barred…rock your face. Play fast and hard. Little Friend has a lil riff in there that sounds a lot like gotta get away by offsprings also appreciate what these guys have influenced. Not quite a 4 but me gusto mucho.
I gave Black Flag 3* so I’m rolling with the same rating here. I enjoyed it, but isn’t great. Mavs in 7.
This is the shortest album I think I’ve ever listened to. This sounded like Black Flag with somehow Presidents of the United States of America mixed in. Seems like a short lived go in the 80s for them but I’m guessing the members found other bands or did solo work. Seems like they probably paved the way for a lot of other punk bands I’ve listened to!
Out of Step is really repetitive to me. Most of the tracks sound way too similar, and give off the sam vibe. The energy is there, but no identity from song to song. It felt like 20 minutes of the same idea, something that I can sort of appreciate, since the drums and instrumentals were still good, but not truly be interested in. All in all, Out of Step is a decent album.
Nice, energetic, gritty.
Tää jäi vähän monotoniseksi verrattuna punkin suosikkilevyihin. Asiallinen meno silti. 3/5
invigorating, occasionally amusing, accompaniment to breakfast
It was fun to make breakfast w in 1107
Pretty high energy.
This may be the shortest album we've hit so far. I did like the energy and could see this being fun live. I still don't love hardcore but this is some of the better stuff I've heard. I'm battling between 2 and 3. Maybe they got me on a day when listening was easy.
I get the appeal of this album for the times especially. A little whiney for my tastes
Garage rock. venga, un 3.
Damn it was short. It was nothing remarkable to me
Garage rock. venga, un 3.
You know, I don't like punk, but I can do pretty much anything for 20 minutes.
Short album and high energy punk. It was a good listen. Not too memorable in my opinion.
Pretty good, I like the riffs in this one more than other punk albums I’ve listened to
I kind of like Cashing In
9 songs 21 minutes Memories of university where during our first week we met B and he played us this terrifying music which was literally like nothing most of us had ever heard before. I must have soothed myself to sleep with some 21 minute single song prog pieces that night. I don't like hardcore, but I can definitely appreciate the influence and talent (or just *stamina*) to be able to play at that tempo that tightly. And by "that" tempo I mean the same frenetic pace that every one of these songs has. Vocals are awful but that's also kind of the point, so we'll allow it. TL;DR: not my bag, but I get it and actually in a way it was kind of fun to crush my skull for 21 minutes, as 22 would definitely have been too long (for real). high point: bass on "Think Again" 5/10 3 stars
Out Of Step is a manic 20-minute ride of raw punk that has incredible energy and a decent sound, but I prefer the refinement and variety that came after it. Happy they kept it short, a low 3, I'd listen again casually, but not with a great amount of interest.
This isn't brilliant really. I like that it's short, it's energetic, and in some places it's quite catchy, but it's also pretty tuneless. Doesn't say as much as other punk albums, I think it gets away with a three because it doesn't overstay its welcome.
Garage rock. venga, un 3.
There are both better and worse records out there than this piece of work.
That was... quick.
This album is one of the white sheep on the cover.
Extremely chad album length. 3.5
Not my taste
Not a second to waste on this 21:36 long album. Fortunately, the guitars and bass sound great. Credit where credit's due.
Hard to say. Probably not for me.
This one comes over like a thunderstorm. Short and heavy. Not my every-day pick. Nevertheless I like the sound and with less sreaming it would be an easy 3-stars-rate. 2,5
I think this is another one where the US post-punk movement and the UK post-punk movement were divergent. So I don't know this and I don't think it was as influential on our strand of music. It's fine though.
3.33
This is more my style. Didnt necessarily love it but enjoyed the fast paced guitar. Reminds me of the band Rancid a bit.
Well this was an energising record to play, and I enjoyed it. But I don't get why an early 1980s hardcore punk record is so extraordinary that it gets into this list. Maybe I'm missing some impact this record had...
3.9.
punk yeah
Some great bass playing, not enough to carry this beyond so-so
Sometimes I base the music off of what comes next in their radio… this was good but not my favorite. The songs that came on after were also good but not my favorite.
I think i like punk rock, depending on the mood and in small doses. This epitomizes punk rock to me. Really enjoyed it more than i thought i would.
Really good harder sounding punk. Not my favorite genre but executed very well. Rating: 3.5
Surprisingly varied, glad I listened, not sure I will again etc etc.
Short sharp and shiny, just how I like it. I've not really heard much hard-core punk but this kinda did it for me. High energy that doesn't ever get the chance to become tiring with the 21 minute run time. Fav songs: - Out of Step - Cashing In
6/10 Highlights: Cashing In Sob Story Think Again
Perhaps I should listen to more punk. Some songs felt like filler but I really like the drums in particular. Standouts- Think Again, Look Back & Laugh 3.7*
It's an EP, but it's 10 tracks, but it's 21 minutes. It's hectic.
If CM Punk was a band this would be it
I dislike punk rock. I say this every time I listen to a punk related album and I include it in each review. That being said, some of the guitar work was pretty good. A lot of Metallica sounding riffs, which I will gladly welcome in a punk rock album. Minor Threat sounds like they know how to play their instruments. The singer sucks... And his lyrics are shit. But at least the other band mates can keep it going. The best part of this Album is that it's 22 minutes long. That's the one thing I love about punk rock... The write short songs and short albums. It is perfect for a non punk rock fan while doing this 1001 albums list. I hated how spotify thought I wanted to keep listening to Minor Threat after the record... So I listened to more than I needed. Oh well. As far as punk goes... This isn't awful. It's tolerable. Reminds me of skateboarding in the 90s and early 2000s. Wish I cared more to dive deep into the production but punk is so surface level for me that it really doesn't invoke anything for me... I basically just don't care. A surprise rating for me.
Head banging music.
Pretty important east coast diy punk. MacKaye grew up to be a powerhouse of the scene.
Best nice, doet me denken aan colin furze achtige muziek 3
I've never listened to Minor Threat but I do like punk. Decent album, aggressive from start to finish. Pretty raw and powerful, good riffs here and there. Didn't blow me away but I could hear how they were a huge influence on some of the modern punk I listen to. Good album!
Not a huge fan of hard-core punk, but this was more accessible than most.
Good workout punk music 3.1
Shouty angular us punk. Sounds ok. Will never play again. Short!
Its not my favorite genre of music but i’m glad i listened to it. Grabbed two tracks for a playlist and maybe i’ll come back to the album someday.
Standard 80s punk album. Great riffs and breakdowns.
I had no idea that Minor Threat were an 80s band. I’ve definitely heard their name before, but I’m not sure if I’ve heard anything by them. I’m sure they’d get mentioned when I used to read Kerrang back in the day. Note: after going on Wikipedia, it turns out they only released albums in the 80s. Not a clue then. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Out Of Step This was a decent 20th minutes of in your face punk music. It is angry, angsty, and probably lots of other words that start with ang. I like how punk music doesn’t tend to meander and rarely has longer albums. It just says what it wants to say, then skedaddles right out the door. I enjoyed this, but I’m not sure I’ll be returning for more listens. I’m glad I heard it, but it feels like a one and done.
3,5
Short, loud and shouty. Like Kevin Hart.
Good
Nice and quick and harmless. Basically generic early 80s punk, thought it was pretty good. 7/10.
3+ Stars (9/15)
I feel like I've been on a run with these 80's punk records. Maybe it's the fact that I am usually listening on my morning commute, but they're not hitting has hard as I wished they would. 3/5
Very surprised that I had not heard of this band. The album is full of angst and anger. I can see how this was a pioneering album in the punk movement.
I can appreciate it from a historical standpoint, however, it was a bit samey for me throughout and I likely wouldn't listen to it again.
3.8 - Another solid artifact from the Washington, DC hardcore punk scene of the early-80s. I know these guys often gigged with Bad Brains - wish I'd been old enough to witness that energy. Clocking in at just over 20 minutes, this is a relentlessly raucous and fast-paced ride. Ian MacKaye pulls no punches with his angsty, potty-mouthed rantings. Standouts: "Betray", "Look Back and Laugh."
Need to listen to this with the lyric sheet in front of me. I know there is more to this than just blast beats and punk singing. Definitely the iconic punk style which I enjoy. Would’ve been awesome to see these guys live back in the day. Look Back and Laugh was my favorite.
Pretty standard punk/rock offering
I've heard prog rock songs longer than this entire album. I guess it doesn't overstay its welcome, but 21 minutes might be the official "too short" limit. Hard getting invested in something this short - almost feels like a throwaway and the generator giving me a day off. Musically pretty good. There's better punk out there, but I'm kind of a sucker for this type of music in general, so whatever. I was going to say that the vocalist sounds suspiciously like the Fugazi guy. Turns out IT IS the Fugazi guy. That brings me to my final point: Why the fuck is "The Argument" not on this list.
Fine but not amazing
Almost impossibly annoying vocals... But... It's good
3.5
Interesting early punk thrash album. I don’t enjoy the singing, the straightforward punk rhythm and interesting guitar melodies were nice to listen to. 3/5, but unlikely to listen to it again.
“Sober white guy yells at cloud” 3/5
I love the rawness and energy. I could definitely align more closely with it if i had the same angst and wanted to rage in the same way. Still, i enjoyed the sound, particularly as it was more interesting than most early punk.
Com duração correta para funcionar bem.
This album was different, but not too Out of Step. Maybe I’ll recommend it to my Little Friend next time I get their Sob Story.
Fun!
bit like pixies if they were worse and too shouty
Kort maar krachtig
This was cool and I feel like it’s influential but wasn’t really life changing for me
Decent Cal-Punk album. I like it better than similar offerings from Black Flag or Dead Kennedy's. Reminds more of Fugazi than those afore mentioned bands. 3 stars
Better than I expected. really nice guitar riffs but i'm not a fan of the quality of the vocals, feels weird that all instruments except the vocals are really nice mixed (I know it's a part of the genre so it's more a personal thing)
Punk!
On the one hand, this is just okay. On the other, I can definitely hear the influence these guys must have had on 90s punk - most notably The Offspring, but also Blink, Green Day, and the rest. Plus, their bassist was cool.
very punk, more than 3 less than 4
Good punk energy. Killer distorted guitar sounds. I love the closing track.
fast and quite good
Liked this more than I thought I would!
Background music and a very easy listen
Brilliant hardcore punk album. This influenced a lot of the music of my youth.
I grew up as an Offspring kid, and I am hearing SO much influence from this band, as I'm sure it influenced so many others. I do like the attitude and driving bass. There's just not really much variation and it's very samey. Thankfully it's short.
So I really liked this album, but I found that all the songs blended into each other and there wasn’t really a song that stood out as amazing All of the songs are very punk rock, but the even the drum sounds like it’s jus the same between songs So I liked this album, but because of the lack of range I’ll give it ***
Punks not massively my thing, but it was alright
Meh.
mackaye has a pretty one dimensional vocal range. basically he manages to make all of the songs sound the same even though there is a decent amount of variety for a straight up fast punk band.
Fun Fact: Scott Kelly lost his virginity to this album...when he was gang-raped by the band.
Gets the punk 3.
Pretty raucous music. Not a big fan of hardcore punk, but this wasn't bad. Helps that the "album" is so short. 21 minutes of this is definitely enough for me.
Short but not very sweet. Probably good music to jump around too and cool like but not my personal preference. Apple Music says this band's discography is 47 minutes long which is a wildly low number.
I have to be in the right mood to listen to Mjnor Threat & I’ve always preferred the first two seven inches.
Not really my taste
If institutionalized were an LP… Im just not a punk person. I can understand why some like to jam to this stuff, but it’s all kind of the same to me. I will say that this album didn’t annoy me. So that’s something.
A minor Minor Threat album, good morning email read rage type music
3/4
Viihdyttävä ja tehokas punkkipläjäys. 2,5 = 3
I agree with the reviewer who noted this as a 'palate cleanser' - following the last couple of fairly bland records I listened to. I wasn't really into this band back in the day, but I like the integrity and intensity now
Me ha gustado. No da tiempo a enfadarse con ellos. Unos 20 minutos de punk, hardcore, rock o lo que sea muy buenos.
9 songs, 21 minutes, probably one thing I like most about punk, short, sharp, to the point. This album is pretty good, not something I'm going to put on repeat but I did enjoy Betray, Think Again, and Cashing In.
Not really my thing, but I can appreciate how influential it was. They're a bit one note, and it's not a note I particularly get excited about, but I like the speed and energy. Fave track - "Cashing In" is definitely my pick - it's unclear to me whether that counts as a bonus track or what, though, so let's say "It Follows" as well, just in case!
I’ve liked a few minor threat songs in the past. But I just didn’t really vibe with this album. It has “strong lyrics” apparently but it’s really hard to tell what the vocalists are saying.also the riffs are “complex” supposedly but to me they were all just kinda boring and generic and all the songs had meh choruses.I prefer bad religion I guess.
Good
That drummer sure gets a workout. Overall, a solid meh for me.
Ok, not my type of music. A couple redeemers
Good energy throughout. Not my taste, but the last song Cashing In was cool. I probably won't listen to this again, but it was good to have done so once.
Enjoyed this more than I expected. The last hardcore punk type thing I listened to had awfully stupid lyrics. This one... I mean they're note Shakespeare or anything but they're not twatty. The music is more melodic than I expected. It's short and to the point. I can hear the influence on a lot of later music here too.
Áhugavert stöff. Áhrifavaldur á ýmislegt sem kom seinna meir.
Unexpected
A good and quick punk album
Looking at the cover art, I'd not guess the power of what I was about to listen to when the first song started. But, despite the last song, which was a total anti-climax for me, I enjoyed the album. Worth to mention that the 1001 list includes a good number of other punk albums, so I guess this is not the most memorable, but punk is always a good choice, so give me more.
I liked this and have a lot of respect for its legacy in punk, but it was a little too much atonal yelling for me to take in all at once lmao
Good music. Not into the screaming lyrics.
Some decent hardcore punk action here. Betrayed is a banger. I still think Husker Du did it better though. Also, this is an EP so should it belong on this list?
Influential, but not essential.
some fun bits, nothing really tedious
Short sharp shock of punk. Not too bad
I've discovered I'm very particular about my punk. Didn't like this at first but it grew on me
Love Minor Threat as an idea but it doesn't always live up to it. I may revise this upwards yet...
I listened to "Out of Step" nearly four times, repeatedly going back to it not because I loved it and couldn't get enough, but because I was having trouble deciding just what I thought of it. My first reaction to seeing the album pop up was excitement to explore a foundational D.C. hardcore punk band that I had long meant to delve into. But my second reaction at the start of the album was disappointment, with the first song representing much of what keeps me from embracing hardcore more. All lyrics screamed in one unvarying burst at the same level and intonation, no nuance there or in the music. I fixated on that take and I think unfairly applied it to later songs, which upon further listens actually often break from that mold. Still, after multiple listens I can only come around part way. pretentious-ass suggested their "Salad Days" EP, and I enjoyed that more. And the band certainly deserves credit for their pioneering role in D.C. punk, the hardcore scene, and the coining of the term "straight edge." But "Out of Step" isn't enough to stay in my rotation.
Can I just listen to an instrumental version? Strong dislike of the voice but love the energy.
I can see that they had an important role in the US punk scene in the 80s and I can appreciate the craft, especially the bass, but not my kind of music.
Raw, didn't feel the rhythm really
A little too hardcore for me, but punk is punk. Nice one lads
Enjoyed that
Very good punk album
Oddly enough I liked this more than I thought I would. Punk music is very hit or miss for me. Probably will give this another listen.
Punk rock vibes without any aspect that really stood out to me. Just fine.
Nine interesting and intense cuts on a solid record for the hardcore punk scene.
Garage rock. venga, un 3.
This was an EP and not an entire album, but it was still enjoyable to listen to and I really enjoyed it. Favorites are Cashing In, and Betray.
I saw the overall review score for this album and got a little worried, but afterwards I realize that's just because I'm guessing most aren't the biggest punk fans, and that's okay. I'm really not either, but I did generally enjoy this album. It did get a little repetitive at times but it's shortness and raw energy made up for it. I mean, I didn't find it anything super special, but it was still enjoyable.
I didn't realize this band was that old! I like ska but this one was a little too much distortion for my liking nowadays.
I like the punk era music. This fits in well with that
I mean... what's not to like about this? Shy of 4 stars for me because I'm more of a Fugazi guy and I'm not into punk enough to stay engaged with such a same-y collection of songs, even at a concise 21min runtime. Is "13 Songs" on this list? That'd probably be a 4-star'er for me.
Had never heard. I like anything with spoken word aspects.
6/10. Nothing to write home about.
there are multiple lineages of punk (blurred, naturally). the stuff i listen to is clearly in the lineage that includes minor threat. had no idea the sound goes this far back!
Cool early 80’s punk. Some compelling tracks.
The future of indie rock. Rock like exploding granite. (6/10) FT: Betray
Not bad and it's a short album. I've never been in to this genre of music though. Probably won't come back to it.
Liked it, intense but thrashing. Would love to learn the lyrics, insane that it came out so early.
Its pretty straightforward but enjoyable nonetheless
Good stuff. Short and to the point. 3 stars.
It's definitely short and to the point!
Loud, aggressive, angsty punk rock. I liked it, but I didn't love it. There's classic punk rock like The Ramones that I'll always adore, and then there's all this other stuff that I'm just too old for now, like Minor Threat. I no longer connect with bands like this but I appreciate what they did and what they offer to burgeoning punks that are young enough to connect with their message. Worth noting that I absolutely adore this album art!
Loved the guitar production and as a fan of punk, generally not a bad album. I appreciate them recognizing that punk albums should not be more than 30 minutes. Definitely an unnecessary album for the list though.
Yeah... I can hear the influence this had on certain punk bands I was into for a short time in high school. So I can appreciate it, but mostly I find it irritating.
I like the general ethos and sound but there wasn't a track that I was like "hell ya this is the one". Hard to rate really, it's between a 3 and a 4 for me but since I didn't gravitate towards a specific song I'll downgrade to 3.
It's cool, a very specific genre of punk that I'm not the most famialr with to be honest.
It's not terrible but I don't like punk
Very foundational sound for later punk, particularly The Offspring and Rage. Some clever instrumentation and irony as well.
Decent punk album that clearly served as an inspiration for later bands. Nothing overly standout. Very short album at only about 21 minutes, but on brand for punk songs.
This would have been a great gig in the early 80s. The album itself is one speed: full pace, top gear. It's a short run time but more than enough to listen to. I'm left a little unsure about what just happened, but I quite like that.
Ma è cortissimo! Punk essenziale, fin troppo. Boh, sono tutte un po' così, senza una vera canzone che emerge. Carino, ma troppo breve.
Short, too trashy
Apparently these guys invented Straight Edge. I'm not sure I would want to put that on my resume, but we've all got to forge our way in this world, and they found something that works for them, which is nice. Best track: Cashing In
Alright I guess. Kinda like the ramones
Genre: Hardcore Punk 3/5 A pivotal movement in the hardcore scene, a hodgepodge of former DC acts themselves, DC act Minor Threat put out what is widely considered one of the most essential releases in the genre. Punk rock had gone somewhat mainstream by the early 80s, but DC took it and made it heavier, louder, and more in your face. Teen angst at its fucking best. While you certainly can hear nearly every group that came after them, whether it be other hardcore DC acts like Fugazi, or later pop punk legends like Green Day and My Chemical Romance, songs like Sob Story and Little Friend are big time, goofy highlights that show the best the genre has to offer. However, this 22-minute barrage was a bit grating at times for me, and while I understand that’s the point, that certainly doesn’t make it more enjoyable. Essential listen, though.
Classic punk rock. Short, fast songs of every permutation of the same 5 guitar cords. Yelling and screaming angry nonsense, with a drummer that is among best in the genre. If you have 20 minutes you can finish the album. Depends what you think about punk - love it or hate it, this is a solid representation!
Good old school punk
Classic punk. Holds up well. Definitely have to be in the right mood though.
Had never heard of this band before. But had heard their influence through Greenday. Big time.
Obviously this stuff isn’t my bag. Too youthful and angry for a man of my vintage. Could appreciate some of it though!
Makes me wanna play Tony Hawk's 3
I was a bit surprised to find this album on here. I like punk rock but Minor Threat is just OK - I've never been into hardcore or straight edge.
First listen. Easy to enjoy. 3/5
Punk
Garage rock. venga, un 3.
9 songs, 21 minutes. Lovely stuff. It sounds exactly like I thought it would.
Angry and loud but not tight. Reminds me of early English Oi
Ahead of its time, but a relatively barebones record by modern standards. The soundtrack to a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game I haven't played yet
Too punk rock
Wow 20 bonne minutes de punk rock. Ca faisait longtemps mais je ne deteste pas, ca s’ecoute bien dans certiane situation. 3.75
Pretty good punk sound. Surprisingly explicit for the time, which is fine but it's just surprising. The flow does break down into screaming and yelling at times, which is a bit of a turn off.
Thought this was solid, can see Green Day being influenced by this band.
Definitely more my speed. I hear Hüsker Dü in there. Not sure who was influencing who. Zen Arcade was out around the same time.
real punk rock. not necessarily my cup of tea but actually pretty good 3.5
Al men ti je to sve isto, više manje.
Imo sam razdoblje kad se minor threat roko uz punks not dead bedževe na torbi.
Some good energetic punk
Gut zum Sport nach einem richtig nervigen Tag, nach dem zweiten Mal Hören ging's mir besser :D
Really enjoyed this hardcore album :) clear to hear the influence they’ve had on some bands I really like
Me sentí en un juego de Tony Hawk, no soy fan del Punk pero a la vez es un guilty pleasure que tiene sus momentos
This was quite irrelevant but! affer all those hideous 80's synths, I think it deserves a better rank just for being different.
sXe
Corto pero sabrosón... punk light
The only thing that makes me love this album is that it was their only studio album. For me it’s a kind of sophomoric punk which is I guess the point of punk.
Minor ok
I found this to be a unique eye-opener to the world of punk rock music. The sound is completely out of my own range of music interests, however I enjoyed the record, and felt that the short length (23 minutes) made up for a cohesive body of work. While it's not something I would personally listen to, I enjoyed listening and reading about how this album has become such a landmark within its genre.
Yeah it was grand?
I can’t believe he doesn’t like Golf!!!
As a psychedelic and progressive rock fan, this is the polar opposite of my taste. So I get it, but I don't like it. Not a melody to be found. Glad it was so short. 1.5⭐️
Number: 169 Date: 06/21/2026 Artist: Minor Threat Album: Out of Step Year: 1983 Style: Hardcore Punk Familiarity: Aware (2) Rating: 2 ======= Of course I know about them and have skimmed through some of their music but I'm not really into this kind of music. I guess it's OK if you like this sort of thing. Mostly, it just sounds like noise to me. It's not something I would ever choose to listen to so have to give it a 2. ======= 2 my personal rating 4 suitability for this list 4 impact ----------------------------------------------- 3.3 composite rating
Song one... Ok I see what this could be. Song three... This might be rough.
second rate
Well,,, it's punk.
i know this was important to the history of punk but it was not important to my ears
Not bad
Didn't resonate with me.
22 min, voix du gars bonne, instrumentale un peu basique 2.5+/5
Took a few false starts to get through this, despite its truncated length..
No me interesa mucho el punk. Y, sobre todo, si no lo conocí en adolescencia... dep
This does hit, without a doubt, but I'm just not a punk guy, let alone a hardcore punk guy.
That's right. Harness your rage. Soon we will take the streets, much like the warriors of Double Dragon, and beat down neighborhood thugs and save the world. Or whatever the endgame of that video game is. Probably saving a girl.
Punk ist kacke
schon schlimmeren Hardcore Punk gehört, dennoch nichts für meine Ohren
Okay the punk I get it, it has something to it. It’s fast-paced and certainly here, it’s only 22 minutes long which I didn’t hate. Still not my genre overall and the vocals are really off-putting tbh.
hässig. 2 headbangs
Hani grad nöd möge. Live ja Mentigmorge nei. Zu pünkyy
Shit - aber nicht pixy scheiße
hardcore/punk.
While the world needs more 22 minute albums of pure punk - I can deal without the straight edge tude. (Embracing people where they are is the win.)
Best thing about this album is the 21 minute run time. Punk has always been angry and aggressive but it was lots of other things, too, but all that feels buried here as the rage is turned up to 11.
Nah
Pretty forgettable, didn’t not enjoy it or anything I just can’t remember any of the songs 2.5
Just noise
Not a fan.
It’s noisy, it’s quick, it’s edgy. Probably contributed a lot to the pop punk scene overall, but not something I need to visit again
not the hardcore i would reach for
Ramones if they were mid
Punk.
I can hear the influence Minor Threat will have had on bands I like, and I know that in my teens when I used to listen to a lot of punk that I'd have really enjoyed this album... but as a tired old man I found it exhausting. The energy is great but the vocals are dire and when I really tried to listen to the backing it was actually pretty droll. There's some catchy hooks but this just didn't do enough to grip me. The vocals are genuinely dire even for punk and end up being a major turn-off. High 2.
Welsh posthardcore... bad first impression (wait it's american? they have sheep over there?) what is this vocalist doing? this is like shouted word. yeh not a fan, unpleasant listen with bogstandard hardcore. At least it's short and the last song isn't bad TWO
Just not a messy, raw punk guy really.
Wish it was longer literally 2 minute average song for only 20 minutes total All very similar Very punk This album is just really mid tbh All the songs are the same hardly any diversity And the song formula they found just isn’t that good Green Day level production with not as good lyrics or music Favorites: betray Like 2.5
Lead singer could use some voice lessons. Every song sounds the same.
just not for me too much of the same
pure punk, not in a good way it all blends together
Not really my genre. I thought that this sounded a lot like Bad Religion at first, but being from 1983, I was impressed at how they sounded quite a bit more modern than that. But then I listened to the whole album, and it kinda just grated on me with its lack of melody/harmony. It was just very dry and punkish without a whole lot of redeeming quality to my ears. I'm sure that it was revolutionary for the time and probably inspired a lot of other artists down the line, but it's just not my cup of tea. Two stars.
Not a big fan
3/10, not my style.
LOUD ANGRY NOISES
It’s hardcore punk! I’m sure I would love it if I were an angry teen. I just wish there was more musicality to it. Some of the backing tracks rocked, but I just can’t get on board with the yell-“singing.” As one reviewer said, “I get it, but I don’t like it.” 4/10 Acceptable
It was okay. Not my favorite punk album.
I had a feeling that I wouldn't like this album, and my feeling was 100% right. At least the album was short. Having said that, I actually didn't mind Cashing In. I would never listen to it again, but I didn't dislike it, so I guess that's something.
Kiire, energiline anti-establishment punk. Laulusõnadest pole kottigi aru saada. Seda oleks vist hea kuulata mingi alkouimas kuskil mosh pitis. Aga niisama istudes, mkm. 2.1/5
I am not angry enough for this album.
Zone out a fair bit. Lots of yelling
Sounded a little bit like some of The Offspring songs that I have heard...the ones I didn't like. I was not upset that it was only 21 minutes
Not a huge punk fan, but didn't hate it
Hell hath no fury like political indignation scorned…Gotta begrudge these guys their principles and commitment to the fury that animates their music, but it quickly becomes monotonous and begs the question of what they have in mind that’s constructive beyond just tearing it all down.
1984. More British Punk Rock that has a rough and fast sound. All sounds the same on this album though.
Fast and loud and boring, but at least it’s short.
Very agressive music, but not my thing. It's fine for what it is though, just not my taste. 4 / 10
I can see that bands like The Offspring would have loved this album. I'm not a big fan of bands like that...
Phew, that was hardcore. Too hard for me, I'm too weak for that. Although it's only a little over 20 minutes long, I couldn't listen to the whole album. 2/5
I don’t dislike it, I just can’t listen to it for more than 4-5 minutes…
God, my favourite thing about this album is that the songs are all less than 3 mins. Not a fan of Punk
Like most 80's punk, I definitely see how this evolved into something cool, and how it would be mind blowing when you were a kid. But, oh my god, the same song over and over for 22 minutes is a drag. At least its short! 2/5
Un bombardeo a la parte de mis oídos que pensaba que le gustaba el punk. Not quite my tempo, a menos que me esté organizando pa ir a una marcha contra la policía.
Very short very mid. But I ain’t a hardcore punk fan so that’s prolly why.
Very loud and rather repetitive after a while. I couldn't tell you which songs I preferred, as they all sound the same a few tracks in. I would probably have enjoyed this in small doses at the time, but I couldn't imagine sitting down to listen to the whole album for pleasure these days. At least it's short.
Thrash punk at its fastest. Lots of screaming. I will say the bass guitarist can play. Top track is Cashing In, but they’re all pretty similar. (2.2*s) I think this Minor Threat would be better to se live, the album duo translate that well.
Much like blues, heard one hardcore punk song, heard them all. Minor Threat may have increased the complexity of their music compared to earlier works on this album but I can't tell. 20 minutes of the same. Not terrible but not great. I guess I'll give them credit for starting something newish and influencing others. Still just some angsty punks posing really no threat to getting radio play or winning any awards. This record is Out of Step with the in crowd but I'm sure the band likes it that way...1.6 stars.
Didn't expect much from a hardcore punk rock album from 1983. While it hits a lot of the tropes you get in punk rock it was a little cleaner than prior examples. As opposed to a mess of sloppy punk rock garage tunes you can actually pick out the individual pieces of this puzzle and understand the lyrics for the most part. Not sure what gets this onto the 1001 list but perhaps it was influential for a specific time or place. It's really just another punk rock album, but at 21 minutes it's easier to justify the listen and I guess there is little to complain about. Not gonna come back to Minor Threat but I appreciate the relatively low cost of entry for which it gets a little extra bump. 2.02 stars
Technically and sonically flawless, but kind of boring and fails to allure or goad. I guess since this is the quintessential Straight Edge album, it has historical merit.

2.5/10
picks: betray, look back and laugh
Melodies aren’t punk
The instrumentals were totally up my alley, but I could NOT get with this vocalist. 2.25 stars.
Not for me. Just sounds like angry yelling over some 13 year olds jamming in their garage for the first time.
I have to give it to the album that it sounds waaay ahead of its time. But unfortunately it's not really my thing.
not my thing
Phh, did not listen to it the days. Do not want to listen it anymore.
I think I'm too old and lazy for this album these days. Only 21 minutes but it was a slog. I feel like I need to be in a mood to appreciate this more but I wasn't. Respect to the unfiltered punk rock vibes though
A bit too hard rock. But not horrible.
this is DEFINITELY the kind of music i'd mosh over if i was at a concert in a dive bar or frat house, but 'out of step' isn't really a stand out album.
Why are you yelling? 2/5
okayyy!! punk!!! david was telling me a bunch of things about this...fugazi...emo...
Angry but one note gibberish
it just sounded like one long song. Could not make out what anyone was saying
okay punk. none of the songs stood out. 2.5
You know, I see how people could listen to this, but those people aren’t me. The only reason I tolerated this so easily is because it was over so quickly. No matter what, I just won’t enjoy being yelled at when listening to anything, especially my music.
you can hear how influential and powerful this band was. Not a go-to for me to have on though.
Not long which was nice, but not my type of music. The last song was a nice change of pace. 2.5
Not my style but had good instrumentals
As someone from the area, I always hear about DC hardcore in these hushed reverent tones whenever I go to local shows. Unfortunately, recognizing its significance to the local scene does not make me any more interested in listening to hardcore. Ironically, this makes me *way* more out of step than Ian Mackaye!
Cool.. another punk album.. listening to this first thing, after not enough sleep sucks. My ears have been assaulted, my head hurts. Thankfully it’s a short album.
Painful! Lots of out of tune yelling.
Better than I thought it was going to be but I had low expectations.
Never been a huge fan of punk. Vocals suck, guitar plays the same riffs. I had to muscle through this.
