Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Finding out that a band I've never heard invented Brit Pop only to be overshadowed by bands I do know. That they were so disgusted with the genre they started they turned around and wrote this album, that I have also never heard of. Then on tour their support act, The Cranberries, blew up and started to steal the spotlight. This is a great story. Clearly they had some influence on the UK music scene, but not how I think any band would want. Not much on this album for me to be excited about. I like that they're trying for a deeper sound and style than most 90s rock. It's like they want to be Bowie or Pink Floyd. They don't quite reach it, but I like the effort.
This guy listened to Bowie and wondered what it would be like to copy it, but with even more reverb on the vocals and without the hooks.
Suede isn't a bad band but this is a bad album.
Hab alles wieder vergessen
Yer Da unironically listens to Suede
This was way too long for how boring it was. Still significantly better than Mariah Carey’s bullshit though.
Not a bad album, just kind of generic rock for that time period.
Quite flat music that just meanders along. I am a bit disappointed.
Meh... Nothing new here? Feels stuck between things that came before it and things that would come after it. Admittedly alt-rock is very much not my jam until it is. But this is not.
Sorry… a couple tunes felt like the 90s hey day… the rest of the album fell flat for me. 2.4.
This is a long album filled with pretty long songs, and I can’t remember anything about it even though I just finished it. It’s just not memorable or catchy at all. But it was never unpleasant, if that makes sense? I will say, the above is not completely true. I do remember being surprised at the swelling prog stuff at the end. I really liked that, but it wasn’t enough to save from the rest of the meh. 3/10 Ho Hum
I enjoy dark and broody but there wasn't very much vocal change throughout this album. The melodies were subdued and the voice felt a bit like it was trying to sound like someone else. So although it was pleasant to listen to, it didn't do it for me. But Still Life is a surprisingly good song towards the end of the album. Maybe this album is starting to make sense for me.
Another reasonably good band playing potentially interesting tunes that are basically ruined by a Morrissey imitator.
erm sommige waren wel ok sommige waren echt ecth heel slecht wrm was zn stem net als david bowie... het was gwn slecthe bowie
It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t exactly good either
I remember this band well from the 90's and for some reason I was never that attracted to it. I have listened to the records and seen them live in 1995 but it just didn't hit me. Now listening to this album brings me in the sonic landscape of 90's guitar driven Brit pop/rock with all the echoes, fuzz pedals etc. Unfortunately this still doesn't talk to me. Halfway through the album I find myself thinking of something else, none of the songs has felt anything else than some background sound. I'll try more later. Sorry, just not my cup of tea. I appreciate the sound of the times, but I don't care for these songs, that's why no more than two stars.
Listening to this album in the year 2026 I think robs it of any cultural impact it might have once had. It sounds dated with it's thin production, overly reverbed out vocals, and mid-90s guitar tones. But that's not the only element I have with this album. The songs are long and dragged out, Brett Anderson's vocals are fairly grating, the mix is absolutely awful with the drums practically drowned out most of the time and the guitar solos are mixed way too out front, the ballads are hokey, and the songwriting overall feels like they needed to do some self-editing before putting things to tape.
On some songs they're just Bowie wannabe's
Too britpop/glam for me, but still interesting-ish.
Not feeling it
Not for me
By chance, I had listened to their debut just a few days before this was generated for me. And... They're not bad. Some clever guitar licks and riffs, and they have certainly listened to a fair share of Roxy Music and Bowie. But Suede doesn't grab me the way I feel they should whenever I read about them. Also, on this, more than on the debut, the voice really annoys me because it constantly tries to do an impression of Bowie being dramatic. Which gets old quickly, and which Bowie pulled off better, not least because he wasn't overusing his dramatic voice.
Wankers
Sounded like at least 30 other albums I’ve heard on this list
The last song on this album was absolutely cracker. There were some generally more pleasant songs focusing on the piano occasionally. However, most of it was the grungy (meaning more of a general descriptor rather than of the music genre) rubbish that their other album on here consisted entirely of. So it can have 2 stars from me, but much better than their other album (but this one was longerrrr)
Like a slightly more upbeat The Smith’s. Didn’t really do it for me. Another kind of boring British post punk album. 2/5 Won’t listen again
Reminds me of David Bowie backed by guitars with 90s effects, but in a very bad way.
To be honest I got quite bored with this. Like it was fine but nothing special
A few tracks are not bad, but this won't get a second spin by me.
For something released in 94 it sure sounds like it came out of the 80's at times. There's definitely some musical talent here, but this largely didn't work for me. There's probably an established term for this, but it sounds like "malaise music" to me. 2.4
2.2 Didn't click with me at all. There were shades of bands/genres that I do like I'm there so I'm surprised I didn't, but man I was excited for it to end. Epitomises the worst of 90s Brit pop/rock
There are albums which I don't quite get at first listen but which I nonetheless feel compelled to listen to again. This was not one of those.
boring mid-90s easy rock with some annoying piano bits.
I thought this album wasn't the most exciting, but maybe if I listened to it again, I could find reasons to enjoy it more. I actually thought the last two songs were quite possibly the most interesting songs on the album, so I'm glad I at least stuck it out, but on the whole the album was just alright.
minimamente interessante, chato sonic youth é a mesma pegada mais legal 2.5/10 ordinário
The lost demo tapes of a fever dream where David Bowie joined R.E.M. Also quite long! And it takes itself very seriously. There is some novelty there but it wears off quickly and by the final 3 songs you’re left with the same feeling as “…maybe I am too tired for this concert tonight - I should have stayed home.”
Nothing brilliant.
The 2 of us est jolie, bonne mélodie La dernière, still life, est grandiloquente mais marrante, plutôt bien
Meh
unimaginative
Better than the usual britpop tbf but still meh
2.5 stars
Idk I didn't really concentrate listening to this
3/22 Boring album
I woulda felt so cool listening to this in college
Is it the most generic and boring of all the Britpop albums on this list? Maybe. Still have a lot of those to get through. But this one was a snoozer.
I'm suffering through a UK rock endurance test with this list so far
Nice but not that memorable in retrospect.
2/14 liked
Its good - not their best
nope
"one of the most pretentious albums ever released"
Not bad
Oh look another Brit pop album from the 90s. Not bad but won’t be listening again.
I liked half of this album, but it wasn't a consistent half.
Not bad but didn’t do anything for me 2.5/5.
It started with a bang, but this one's a slow burn.
Just a rehashing of glam. What's new here?
Meh
I like a few Suede songs, none of which were on this record. This was a bit morose and dreary. Not really the vibe I know them best for.
2.5 Stars meh
Only know one of their songs and it wasn’t on this album, wouldn’t listen again.
Dog Man Few Stars
65
Another day, another 2* with no business here. Honestly, I pretty much tuned out after a couple of songs. Instead of this 2* album, the list should include The Crow Soundtrack, which would be a 4*. I don't know if there was a discussion or rule that there are no soundtracks in the project, but there should be. If we're talking albums (distinguished from bands/artists), then soundtracks have a place.
More brit pop This isn't as bad as some but no idea why it's among the 1001 albums I must hear
# Album Name: Dog Man Star # Artist: Suede # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Below par album. SHouldnt be on the list # Top Tunes: No # Would I listen to it again? Nahhhhhh
meh
This isn’t really moving me in any meaningful way. Suede sound like an uninspiring blend of Bowie and Echo and the Bunnymen with a 90s instrumental flair. It’s moody and has the potential to be a special album, but it falls flat.
all over. ethereal. rock? ballad? sad?
Not necessarily a bad listen, I just lowkey just did not give a shit about this album. Some tracks as individual songs yeah fairly decent like Heroine. However, all the songs together just sounds the same and the album honestly just felt like a bit of a slog to get through. Did not need to listen to this before I die.
Not so much . Some songs were enjoyable- almost sounded like musical theatre at times. Some songs were grating. Overall they are ok and good, but not my jam. 2.5
im sick of UK alt music. its so mid
The album would’ve had a bigger impact if it had more ballads i.e. The 2 of Us. LOVED the orchestral moment in Still Life. Latter part of the album saw some improvement.
Technically sound/good but could shake the feeling that it sounded like Ricky gervais and Russel brand making an album together.
Ok. Very strange lyrics. Must have had quite the trip(s)
Bißchen zu glamrockig. Paar solide Songs dabei.. alles zusammen aber eher boring.
Moody.. very Bowie. And I’m not a huge fan of bowie
No thanks.
Started off strong with some big tunes. Then it started to lag with a bunch of overly dramatic numbers with syrupy-thick production. Clearly a strong influence on bands like The Killers.
Didn’t enjoy this one, didn’t like the general sound at all. Thought suede would be better, feel like I’ve heard of them being good. Specific rating - 2.5 Fav song - the 2 of us Least fav- daddy’s speeding
I think this is actually marginally better than the first Suede album, maybe a 2.1, but I'll have to round it down to two stars I feel.
Most of the songs were meh. I guess a few were actually a little enjoyable.
Ok, nothing that strikes me as great or bad
I like the music. Everything is alright when it’s just the music. The singing though! I can’t stand the singers voice. It’s the fly in the ointment.
This album is not for me. By the time I got to “This Hollywood Life”, I was ready to tap out. Many moments where I can tell they can play, but the music just doesn’t do it for me and the vocalist and lyrics do not help.
To the reviewer that compared this to Bowie, I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed.
The very first song I listened to I got the vibe of a depressed version of The Beatles and I stand by that. After listening to the rest of the album, I would also say they give a slight Bowie sound too. All in all, I would not listen to them again.
This is almost exactly between a 2 and a 3 for me. I’m not going to revisit it but I’m not necessarily annoyed by it either, it’s fine if a little boring. 2 + stars, not quite to the I wouldn’t be upset if someone put it on level.
Some was ok, some of it was like a bad Smiths album.
Nothing remotely original. Another poor man's U2.
Not my cup of tea 2/5
Very boring, but not awful.
I knew I was supposed to like this album but Brett Anderson’s voice has always been too hard a sell for me to ever engage with it. I don’t mind a bit of seedy self-pity but this more than enough for me. There’s no truth to the rumour I just made up that The Verve’s The Drugs Don’t Work was written after listening to this album for a week.
2 - forgettable
Started out good but wasn't very good after the first few songs
Honestly, wasn’t the biggest fan of this album. The dull and lack of substance rock albums are so plentiful on this list for some reason, and this was definitely one of them. If I was doing something of substance maybe it would be nice but as a vocal point it doesn’t do enough to reel and capture me in.
Some of the most pretentious music I've ever heard. The lead singer is trying really hard to do a Bowie/Morrissey combo impression, but here's the thing: David Bowie didn't suck. It's saved from a 1 due to the band playing their asses off to cover up for the lead. 2/5
I'm surprised I didn't enjoy this more. For an album with such grand, dense instrumentation and lush production, it often felt like it was going nowhere she saying nothing. Many of the songs felt like I was just waiting for them to end.
Not available for me to listen to
Another 90s insufferably boring Brit pop album. You know, I think it might be time to rename this list, "500 Mildly Enjoyable 90s Alt Rock Albums to Listen to Before You Die and Some Other Stuff".
Not really anything remarkable about this one. “Meh” might be too kind.
The Asphalt World was decent. Everything else was kind of meh.
I like the first Suede album (this is their second LP) quite a bit and while this the follow up album is decent enough it's also pretty boring to my ears. Fine as background music and some interesting things going on in a few songs but not something I will ever revisit again.
Fine album. Sounds very 90s British. No real standouts for me.
I liked this album fine. It kind of felt like a poor man’s David Bowie-esque vibe with the nods to classic and glam rock. Nothing incredibly groundbreaking to me. I actually thought the last couple songs on the album were more interesting than the first half of the album. Overall, it didn’t quite hit the mark for me and I probably wouldn’t seek this one out again.
Monotony. Still Life was the only song to vaguely catch my attention. This album shouldn’t be on this list.
Ihan jees, toiset biisit kauheita mutta pari ihan hyvää
Apparently they're now known as The London Suede. I don't really hear anything interesting ...
Pretty boring and bland
Each song very samey...
No expectations for this one. Don't even know what genre this is. Kinda feels like a Bowie impersonator. Bored by the album. It's WAY too long to be this monotonous.
You could listen to this album....or, you could drink too much cough syrup and go sit on a park bench in a rainy city. Same vibe.
I feel like this would be really boring to watch live. Especially coming off of No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith
Not bad but instantly became background music
sad sad sad
I just don’t know what to write about this one, except that it seemed like work to listen to it. Didn’t hate it, but it’s two stars from me.
The usual 2, not for me. My guess is this got a 3.1
Musically solid, but the singer consistently fails to channel his inner Bowie that he’s clearly reaching for
Way too glammy for my tastes.
i'm meant to listen to an HOUR of this?!?
More like dog bob album
Suede’s Dog Man Star is the band’s grand swing for the fences, a record dripping with drama and self-seriousness, where Brett Anderson’s tremulous croon wavers between Morrissey melancholy and Bowie-in-space affectation while the band piles on glam riffs and the occasional prog sprawl. When it works, it’s striking: “We Are the Pigs” feels like Bowie fronting Meddle-era Pink Floyd, complete with a scorched-earth solo; “The Wild Ones” strips things down into bruised balladry; and “The Power” rides jangly guitars and lush strings. But the excess gets messy fast—“Introducing the Band” sounds like an art-school ritual gone wrong, “Daddy’s Speeding” veers into uncomfortable psychodrama, “Black or Blue” drowns in falsetto, and “The Asphalt World” stretches past nine minutes with little payoff. Ambitious, yes. Cohesive or consistently listenable? Not so much.
2 stars Pretentious and often uninteresting, but not without its moments. One of those things that hit in the UK but don’t know anything about it here and in listening to it I don’t get the hype.
Didn't enjoy any of it!
Too long. Even if it sounded cool.
brit pop seems to live and die with its vocalists and i'm going to have to ask brett anderson to go and have a seat with damon albarn, we'll call you when you're needed boys (rarely). swirly airy gothy guitar work that made parts of this interesting at least
An absolute slog that took me multiple days to get through. Not even that bad! Just forgettable, samey, draggy.
I liked this Suede less than the other Suede. This one was less rocky, and more camp and Bowie-ish, which to me is worse.
Meh
5/10
Not for me
It’s good but you know precisely where the band is from and when it was recorded by its sound.
Meh
please give me something interesting soon
I was happy when I saw Suede pop up again. The album they had on the list a few months ago was one of the happier surprises I had encountered here. This wasn't as good - And it had potential. I'm not sure what they were shooting for but the intentionally muffled sound throughout the album was a put off for me.
The combo of lyrics, singing style, and orchestral, dramatic flourishes gave me the irresistible urge to roll my eyes. It is a physical reaction. For some reason it reminded me of the physical urge I get whenever I see Tucker Carlson's mock-incredulous, slightly mouth agape face. It's not just a punchable face, it's a punch-demanding face. In the same way, this album demands an eye roll.
This album could have absolutely benefitted from some editing on the track list. It starts fairly strong, but there's a lot of uninteresting and unremarkable material that I struggled to connect with. Even when the penultimate track roped me back in, the last track goes right back to the same boring structure with some faux melodrama. Some decent individual songs, but a lot to skip. Top tracks: The Wild Ones, The Asphalt World
The writer seems to have a certain kind of voice that they are drawn to, like Morissey meets Depeche Mode. And, it is irritating. There is such good music that was around during the 80s/90s and we keep being forced to listen to this British, new wave mediocrity. I guess musically, it isn't terrible but it is REALLY hard to get by listening to that singer. 2/5
Unending melodrama. A really tough listen.
This release did nothing for me. It didn't leave any impression at all; it was terribly boring.
I really gave this a good go but it just didn’t click, kind of like echo and the Bunnymen but years too late
Quite some fun instrumental climaxes on multiple of the tracks here, but many others keep a very slow and nothing vibe. Not a big fan of the singer in general, and when the instrumental is sparse it really feels like nothing much is happening. Has some good moments, but as an overall product it feels lacking. 2,5/5
Ok. I don't like the falsetto whining.
1. band - 1 2. pigz - 1 3. heroine - 1.5 4. Wild - 1 5. Speeding - 2.5 6. Power - 1 7. Generation - 1 8. Life - 0 9. Us - 1.5 10. Blue - 1.5 11. World - 1.5 12. Asphalt - 1.5 13. Life - 1.5 14. Together - 1 15. Whip - 1.5
I’ve really enjoyed some of the other Suede albums I’ve heard, and this one seems to be their highest regarded. Naturally, I was excited to hear this, but I was left quite deflated. If I was to summarise this album with one word, it would be “boring”. This isn’t an adjective I’d usually use for Suede, but this just didn’t grab me like their self-titled album or even Auto-Fiction. It makes me wonder if I somehow listened wrong, but I just didn’t vibe with it.
Wasn’t in the mood for it today. Try again sometime.
Bog off Suede. It's very hard to get past the mix of Brett Anderson's fundamental weirdness, combined with a really quite run of the mill (Butler apart) outfit. His voice is in full annoying mode on this too. Basically, if it's not Trash, then his whiny vocals are not worth my time.
2/5
Groupe inconnu. Je me suis ennuyé assez vite. Et l'album est vraiment trop long. Pas de seconde écoute envisagée. =>2/5
This was fine. I didn't get a lot out of it. Won't revisit this
Dear Mr. Dimery, Just because a person sounds vaguely like David Bowie and charted at some point in the UK doesn’t mean that they’re at all influential or that they qualify as “must hear before you die”. Sincerely, Listeners
I know Suede from the two big ones in the 90’s. There is a reason that I’ve never bought one of their albums. This is proof that I’m correct, I don’t think I would ever actively seek out an hour of my life to listen to Suede do a bad Bowie impression. To summarise; hair too floppy, trousers too tight, tie too thin.
A handle full of okay tracks. Solid 2 star.
Not for me.
yeah yeah man i get it
This would've been better if they didn't have a karaoke singer as a vocalist.
Not really doin it for me. It has some good songs and elements but a lot of the “hits” just feel like 70s rock filler if it was made in the 90s.
It could be I only heard Suede after Bernard Butler left and maybe I just like them without his influence. This left me a little cold
Meh.
Suede have largely passed me by, though having heard this I have definitely heard other songs by them It would seem they got lumped in as Britpop just because they were around at the right time but they don't really qualify. Definitely trying to sound like Bowie and there were bits that reminded me of Pink Floyd. ...I didn't really like it. Wasn't bad but had that issue where it seemed like they just chose some really route one chord progressions and accented them with the 'Suede' sound. Would struggle to pick out one song over the other.
Every Brit rock Axum for this era on this list sounds the same and sucks
Whiny.
Meh
Ok album...at best.
I liked the other Suede alright, but not this one. David Bowie has so many songs. He already had so many songs by the time Suede rolls around. There’s no reason for other bands to be writing more Bowie songs
Always had a troubled relationship with Suede. Animal nitrate is a truly great song but my appreciation tends to be restricted to their singles. This album just serves to reinforce my view that they were just a bit dull
I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t like it either - I’ve never been a fan of Suede and that opinion hasn’t changed listening to them again as an adult.
I think The Wild Ones is a beautiful song and I was hoping to like this album much more as a result. But 24 hours after I listened to it, I couldn't really tell you anything about it. I think my big issue is that Brett Anderson's voice is appreciated best in small doses, as it can be a bit grating over a full album. Not really a 2 and not really a 3, I'm going to plump for a 2 but possibly try again with this album in future. 2/5
A quite hopelessly dreary, smeary, dull snoozefest of a record. I almost said blur but it’s not actually even a 100th the quality of the worst songs from Modern Life Is Rubbish. Very soupy, wannabe grandiloquent and faux symphonic. It all falls flat because the songs are so boring and with barely any lingering hooks. Singer also has that really mingy, cod-glam, sub-Bowie whine. And put on some goddamn pants!
Love the Rolling Stone review "one of the most pretentious albums ever released by a major label." Can’t do better than that.
This came out in 1994?!? Holy derivative batman. I laughed about loud at the opening line of "The Wild Ones" so pretentious and yet cheesey at the same time. This is just awful.
What do people see in this band that gives them such acclaim? ⭐⭐1/2
generally uninteresting
Suede isn't really my favourite band, so wasn't super excited about this. As a side-track I actually decided to look them up a bit more and stumbled on a live video of 'So Young', which really kicked ass. So I feel that made me less hostile about their music. Unfortunately 'So Young' isn't on this list, but still. With all of that in mind, I did find this album a bit too... grand or glamorous somehow? It felt like some songs were made for some musical setting ('Daddy's Speeding', 'The 2 Of Us', for example), and I didn't quite like that sound. Many songs run a pretty gritty guitar sound, which is cool, but often there are not strong enough hooks in my opinion. Didn't really find any songs I would call "great" and there is barely anything on this album that makes me want to go back again.
Extremely meh. Like, the dictionary definition of inessential. And this isn’t even the only album of theirs on the list.
Ok 2/5
Apologies to Suede but it just didn’t click with me.
I definitely heard the David Bowie and Smiths influences. I just had a hard time caring. It’s well made but it’s something I would immediately flip past in the CD section of my local record store. I like other britpop albums more. Favorite song was Heroine.
This is sort of my wheelhouse adjacent. The instrumentation was cool but the voice was a little too operatic at times for me.
Weird, 90s Brit pop. Wouldn't have expected this on the list. 🙄 Especially a 90s Brit pop band who clearly worship David Bowie
not for me
Meh! Didn’t really notice/pay attention to this one a ton.
It's genuinely getting hard to write reviews for Britpop. I've never heard of these bozos, nor am I sure what the "hit" song is on here that convinced our glorious 1001 book overlord to include this. Thanks for another Britpop album I really enjoy them a lot and think they're such a great attribute to music history.
One of the most nothing albums I've ever fucking heard. Opening track is cool tho I guess 4/10
A friend got me into them right around this time, he's a brit pop dude and listens to nothing but. It's been decades since I listened to it but my first impression still stands, it's not my thing. The wall of sound with no hollows or breaks is not for me, so many bands at the time mixed their album in this manner. It's just busy with every nook and cranny filled with an instrument. "We Are The Pigs" has some good rock vibes going and is the one song I remember liking. On "The Wild Ones", his delivery is so dramatic, it highlights the fact that his voice is just OK at best The album got a Remaster and includes B-Sides now so it must be popular but the most listened to song ("Wild Ones") has only 11M listens and the average is under 1M for the majority of songs. Never would have made my T1001. Has its moments but overall it didn't age well, but then I don't think it was that great when it was released.
kinda like Duran Duran + The Cult + The Cure... it was okay. It was kind of interesting but I found myself 4 songs in and wondering how much more I had to listen to. I turned it off.
Another ‘sure, fine’ entry I’ve already forgotten, to be honest. At its best moments, it kind of reminded me of U2. Just nothing notable to me. (1.5 stars)
Just found it a bit whingey
Hard pass
Why why on this list? This album was about 50 minutes too long.
Definitely should have been shorter to stop the pain that it was
Okay so first off, these are the fools I have to thank for Britpop. Yippee. Secondly, I thought this could get a 4 through the first three songs, then I got gradually more irked as the album went on. This has got to be one of the most pretentious albums of all time, like Radiohead levels of "woe is me" poor tortured misunderstood artist. Bleh. Lyrics were pretentious, the way the fool sang, trying to be all dramatic and such, pretentious and bleh. This album just irritated me. Now I'm in a bad mood and have to listen to a Radiohead album so thanks for that album generator.
again-WHY so much Brit pop? and this one is a very poor one. vocals are poor. comes across as a Spinal Tap version of mid 90's alt/indie band that takes themselves too seriously.
Hate the production choices. There's probably a good cover of The Wild Ones. 2.4.
This started off ok but really dragged. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5
This was disappointing. I know Suede and like pefer Coming Up or Sci-Fi Lullabies to this. Dare I say that in my opinion they're better post-Bernard Butler.
Not too sure of Suede. Sounds to me like a poor man's Bowie impersonator singing songs oasis and blur would have rejected.
This album does not hold up. It comes across as factitious, no real originality
2 mediocre across the whole thing
Another tough one to find and had to listen to it on YouTube. And another tough listen. It had its moments as an album to put one asleep.
I think I have reached my breaking point - I can't take it any more. If there is one more "English Alternative" Album on here that all sound like the same boring drivel ... I don't know .. But, ugh ... Why do they keep doing this to me?
What a bore. Hate the vocals.
Ein paar wenige gute Lieder..
I tried. Wasn't for me. Very easy to not pay attention to this. Bland to annoying. Would not listen again. If I owned this I would give it away. Two stars.
I really didn't enjoy this but I got the feeling that this is definitely someones favourite album.
Some cool moments, but Generally, too much of the wrong things. It seemed overdressed to me.
I’m leaning more toward the early assessment, “one of the most pretentious albums ever released by a major label.” Its growth in critical acclaim is fairly meaningless when considering quality or talent. Plenty of ugly old things are now considered priceless… yet it doesn’t change the fact that they’re still pretty damn ugly. Such is the life of the lazy art reviewing industry.
Didn't hold my attention at all
took a while but I fell asleep to this
I have scattered memories of Suede from childhood. There’s one that’s just Brett Anderson going up (or “coming up”?) on an escalator – we’re at the top but crouching down, seeing him steadily appear – there’s a lot of blue and black, and I’m wondering why they’re in Meadowhall after everyone’s gone home to bed already. It’s around that time that I’m told by various men about the importance of a good hifi (perhaps not literally, but rather through the decisiveness of their actions when around a tall all-in-one and general seriousness of their expressions). There’s the bloke my mum’s mate is going out with who likes to play Garbage on repeat. There’s the fella next door who puts Toploader on and has it blasting out his conservatory while he tends to the BBQ. And then there’s grandad, who I don’t actually remember ever seeing interact with his hifi system but had some cool looking CDs. It’s the 90s, and we are shiny disc – don’t scratch it! – worshipping audiophiles. And it’s here, in this groove of memory (I’m analogue, sorry), that I place my impression of Suede. A band who could give a home speaker system a ruddy good run even if they don’t do much else for a listener like me. This is all absolutely fine. There are really well crafted hooks (“The wild ones”), very tasteful nods to their influences (Bowie, especially throughout) and some stirring atmospherics (“The asphalt world” is a personal highlight). There’s often a bit too much – guitar, whining, strings, song, songs – though, and the accusation that this is a pretentious record certainly starts to feel fair by the ”Still life”’s final “swell”. But it’s also a portentous record, in many ways – something like “The Black Parade”, for example, feels like a spiritual cousin. I’ll pay it the due respect, but likely no more.
I feel like this album gaslit me, because by the end I was wondering if I had somehow switched to a different record without realizing. The first half is generic alt rock that didn't stand out in a particularly positive or negative way (although I didn't like the occasional falsetto). The second half was very different and the last track might have been the end credits to a movie. Then the first bonus track was maybe my favorite song? Weird.
Excessive and ridiculous. The soundtrack of egos inflated by early success. Interesting from a rock history point of view, but not necessarily enjoyable. I could die without it, to be honest. Some good playing though. Production was spotty, also overblown (the orchestra is insultingly cliche).
Vocals throw me off. Guitar work is cool.
This was ok
Never heard of this band or album. Not sure i was missing out on much.
Not as good as the first album - shame really
meh
I don't know, man. I'm honestly surprised at the number of five (not even four) star reviews for this, and the number of people who say it's top 5 Britpop. Granted, my bar for Britpop is now very low, but this just seemed so ordinary. It was supposed to be big and sprawling and almost prog, but it just seemed like an album of fine, but forgettable, songs of medium length. I'm not sure how this album actually became divisive, but it's at least not among my one-star albums.
I like Suede. I believe we reviewed their album The London Suede not too long ago. This album seems to lack a lot of the power of that album and comes off as pretty flat and disorganized by comparison.
Music for people that love that insufferable twat, Morrissey.
Suede’s debut was our #27. Here they are back, a year later for them, three and a half years and 950 albums later for us near the end of the journey. And so many Britpop albums of annoying voices in between. I may have had more patience for it before. Back then, I said that: “I could definitely see myself listening to Suede again. I will agree that I don't dig the singer's voice at times, which is what is going to keep this album from earning ****. Sometimes - sometimes - I really like the way he uses his voice, with short sudden high notes and quick swings to the lower register. But too often he hits that sweet spot of saccharine Sussex accent that makes pretentious-ass sick to their stomach and disrupts their bowels.” To no surprise, I have not actually listened to Suede again in the interim. And I’m now hearing too much of the saccharine Sussex and not enough of the short sudden swings. And that was before things got worse with “The 2 Of Us” and “Black and Blue.” So where did they go wrong after a promising debut? Well… touring with the Cranberries as their opener before this album, they may have gotten jealous that the Cranberries were getting bigger than them… the guitarist was on too much acid, and left the band during the recording of this album… they may or may not have created Britpop, but grew to hate it (kind of with them on that, as they describe it as a “whole boozy, cartoon-like, fake working-class thing”)... but the Britpop bands that followed them (Blur, Oasis, and Pulp particularly) eclipsed them… and they changed their name to London Suede, because a Maryland singer owned the US rights to the name Suede (and then they proceeded to never be a big deal in America). Justine Frischmann and Justin Welch were with Suede before their debut album, and would go on to form Elastica, which wasn’t long-lasting but also had a bigger hit than anything Suede did with “Connection.” Which still rocks, by the way. All of which is to say that things did not turn out for Suede the way they may have hoped or envisioned. The potential still shows up on occasion. (See “Asphalt World.”) But the reviewers who called it “pretentious,” “pompous,” and “overblown” were spot-on.
There must not have been very much happening in the British music scene in 1994 for this to stand out. Underwhelming.
Day372 - i’ll keep trying but so far other than oasis you can count me out of the brit pop genre.
It's very telling that my anglophile wife who loves all things britpop has never brought these guys up.
Meh. Kind of Bowie vibes, kind of Smiths vibes. Nothing stood out. Could have been worse but could have been a lot better.
slow britrock. While good I feel like I've heard it before even before I listened to the album. Nothing wrong with the music but nothing that makes me seek it out. While the singer has a good voice and I don't dislike the songs on this album, Beautiful Ones is the only song that I know by Suede and I don't think any song on this album will stick with me enough to remember it.
Not a classic
Bunch of pretentious wankers! I have always hated Suede, mainly because of the screeching vocals and this one doesn’t change my mind. I am guessing the debut will be better as it helped shape Britoop, but so glad the music scene pivoted away from this lot onto the likes of Nirvana, Oasis, Radiohead etc.
Suede in 92 was a bit of a classic, this is not.
This confirmed that Suede are not my taste. I even tried listening to their first album to see if I was missing something, but gave up on that after the first few songs. I'm hearing Bowie in their sound, but none of these songs connect with me like his have. They're good at what they're doing I guess, it's just not for me.
It's too feely, too slow
Pretty boring and generic. Standouts songs: The Power Asphalt
Pretentious and boring. Not much more to say. I was relieved when it was over.
Not really sure what he was on about, but consider me out of the loop
I've been a lifelong fan of most of David Bowie's eras, but I've never been a fan of Brit-Pop since listening to Suede's COMING UP in 1997, and the barrage of Oasis, Blur, and The Verve records throughout that era. This album manages to capture more of the DIAMOND DOGS, THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST, THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD, vibes that I am convinced that DOG STAR MAN references. All of which makes the album a bit more listenable than the records of the previously mentioned bands but not by much. The best British Commonwealth music, of the 90s, in my opinion, is actually the albums of Depeche Mode, The Cranberries, Seal, Sting, The Prodigy, Billy Idol's CYBERPUNK, U2, and The Chemical Brothers who were all creating something new instead of desperately trying to recapture an era of British rock and pop that had already been explored to death.
Not my fave. 2/5
It was whatever. Would rather just listen to Bowie. How these guys competed with blur oasis and Pulp is beyond me.
This feels a bit like how Hugh Grant's character in Paddington 2 wants to do a one man show. It's got some talent but is clearly so deep into its own thing that it can't really make sense or be good. I always appreciate someone going for it but considering the things that must have inspired this, it doesn't feel like it's treading any especially new ground. I really hope they enjoyed making it and if I heard they had other things like this I'd give it a chance to see if it grew. May not be the best thing to have on the list. Still Life got fun at the end when it got orchestral.
Is this a U2 cover band?
Better towards the end. Second half acceptable.
The folly of Brit-Pop. Suede collaspse in on themselves by believing their own hype and writing a concept record of such bloated pomposity, I suppose it really is a marvel. It's just a drag. Best Tracks: We Are The Pigs; The Wild Ones; New Generation
Nothing special. Not bad, but just very mediocre. Just didn't do much for me.

Also eh. I’ve concluded I do not like Brit rock at all
6/10 Highlights: We Are The Pigs New Generation The Asphalt World
6/10 Highlights This Hollywood Life The Asphalt World
I appreciate what this band was trying to do - a little shoegaze/glam/art rock/etc mash up. Was it successful? Nope.
I enjoyed some of this, but the album and many of the songs overstayed their welcome. This could have been a decent 40 minute album, but the 19 minutes or so of filler ruined the experience.
This wasn't as depressing as their other album; however, nothing left a lasting impression on me.
I don’t have any introductory background information on this band to really start this review. So I’m just going to get straight into my thoughts. This album is surprisingly recent. For a record released in 1994, it very much harkens back to the sound of the three decades prior. It takes some of the most impactful and popular genres in British rock music history, such as glam rock and psych rock, and brings them together with the Britpop sound that was thriving during the period this was released. And all of these things together makes an art rock hodgepodge of really dense and almost dirty sounding instrumentals. It’s an interesting mix, and one that seemed to be revived generally pretty well. So I went into this with hopes for something decent. Little did I know this would turn out to be one of the most boring listening experiences I have had in a very long time. To really sum it all up, this album is just mind-numbing and boring. An absolute slog that I felt well overstayed its welcome, being nearly an hour long. This is due to the track length being, on average, about four to five minutes. Not horrible really, but when put in this context, it is a struggle to get through. These songs aren’t plain necessarily, but I was left uninterested even after the first or second song had ended. And it just felt like they were repeating the same kind of sound, ad nauseam, for another ten songs. They were pulling from so many unique spaces, and didn’t manage to stick the landing on any of them. The singer also wants to be David Bowie so badly. And there are moments where he actually sounds quite similar. But I mean that in the worst way possible. It took until the second to last song for me to find something I wasn’t being put to sleep by. And you know what, I’ll give them credit where it’s due. The Asphalt World is pretty good actually. And the closing track isn’t half bad either. But this album as a whole is just more proof to me that the “Britpop” movement of the 90s was not as good as people remember it being. Rating: 3/10
This was pretty bad.
Not for me
Ongelooflijk.
Grand, 2.5
In the UK they'd call this "bloody awful".
Started at meh and went downhill from there
A slow burner. Not half bad but most of the album is too drawn out and boring. I hear the Bowie and Smiths influence for sure. Had to read up on the album title meaning and it's fitting for a singer who saw this as a growth project. May check out another song or 2 by the band but won't be purposely playing this album again...1.65.
At first I got my hopes up. Then it turned into the usual British pop rock slog.
I’ve never been much of a Suede fan but this wasn’t too bad despite Brett’s crooning. ‘The Wild Ones’ is the standout track for me, with some lovely noodling on the guitar.
I'm sorry, but England or not, it's 1994!! This isn't bad at its core, it's enjoyable at tines, competency is displayed. But it sounds like a good 80s record, not even a 90s version os 80s music. For that it's a 4/10 rating amd rounded down
3.81 rym non orrendo ma no
I was very underwhelmed.
The 2nd half of this album was really tough, every song felt like it was 15 minutes long and filled with mundane music and whiney vocals. First few songs were pretty good though. 2.5.
A bore.
The first half was better then their other album. The last 4 or 5 songs were rough.
I much preferred the other Suede album, the S/T one. This one was weird and the second half sucked.
Started out alright but was too long and started just droning on and on and on……
Bowie glam rock, but add a sprinkle of 90's guitar sound and make it drag on too long.
Jaha paska wibe.... Junasta myöhästymissessio heh..
- Are the Brits responsible for the most inconsequential, non-discript pop / rock music? Serious question .... -
Idc
Boring
Might just a be a mismatch in my own mood to the record, but this really wasn't it for me. Sounded like an unsuccessful attempt to tap into a Bowie aesthetic. I was pretty worn of the experience by track 3 and this drags on for 70 minutes... 2 / 5
Definitely sounds like faux Bowie. There are some not great songs on here. Kinda sounds opera-y. Some moments I think are alright but not great. Will not be back.
Sounds like end credit music for a not so good movie
2.5
I should love this since it kicked off the Britpop that I love so much. But I didn’t listen to it then and it’s not that special sounding now.
Too experimental
This was one of the more difficult albums for me to rate thus far. I liked a few of the tracks on this album quite a bit, however, the tracks I liked tended to be ones that were then repeated later in the run time of the album. My main issue with the album lies in the run time and repeating of tracks. After about an hour in I felt I had heard everything the album had to offer and the next hour felt like an inconvenience more than anything. To say it overstayed its welcome is an understatement. I listened to this album on a road trip and had planned on catching up on some of my backlog of albums during my 4 hours in the car. I got a phone call in the middle of the album causing this one album to then take up a majority of the drive. I know that’s not the albums fault, however when the last half of the album contains a number of different versions of songs heard on the first half of the album it begins to be a bit fatiguing and feel as though it’s wasting my time. I really wanted to give this at least a 3 maybe a 4 but cannot justify that given that I was angry with the album by the time it had finished. I’m giving this a 2 only because I feel as though the musicality on display here was good, albeit nothing special. The album isn’t objectively bad enough to earn a 1 but also overstays its welcome to the point of genuine frustration.
Barely a 2
Did not care for this. Too Morissey-y for my tastes.
Not good
Meh, they are just a wet Pulp. I remember I had to do a presentation about Suede for GCSE music. I remember thinking they were really boring then and really boring now. I guess there were some nice guitar breaks on some of the better tracks but I generally have no interest.
We Are The Pigs The Wild Ones New Generations Black Or Blue
Not my thing nor is it anything I would choose to listen to.
Regular album, I think I'm more into the latter albums in Suede's career.
Slough to get through after a while - it has some good songs but gets boring.
ok album nothing special
#205. I don't know why there's a greater than zero amount of Suede albums on this list. They're both a bit shit, aren't they? 2/5: narp
Not as bad as the other Suede album on here that I hated (no more please) but still not very good. That singer really comes across as trying to be Bowie, he's no Bowie and these songs don't even compare with his work.
Suede? More like shite.
