Reviews (page 6 of 7)
This was fine. A little more boring than a band called "Primal Sceam" would lead you to believe.
the album and artist names primed me for some hard rock/heavy metal-type music and this was not that at all. but that's not where the disappointment ended! the album failed to deliver or delight on any axis by which music is typically judged and enjoyed. it's just... dull. the related songs radio that played afterwards on spotify was much more interesting, which was a sure sign that the album had ended. favorites: out of this void, trainspotting
Another big load of nothing album. I can't remember a single tune. I think at one point I recognised a sample from early Pink Floyd, but I could have just been imagining it. I have no idea what this was and I have no interest in finding out. My main impression was that it was much too long.
Not terrible but also not a fan.
At its best this sounded like slightly cooler U2, and at its worst it sounded like the soundtrack to an extremely of-its-time hacker crime movie. Which I guess is kind of what they were going for? There’s a high ceiling for what a bunch of Irish anarchists are gonna sound like as a band. This doesn’t get too close to it.
2.3 Very weird. I've heard of movie soundtracks to movies that haven't existed, but this is the first I've heard of a movie soundtrack to a movie which did exist but didn't request it. Overall it just didn't click with me. Maybe I'm a bit tired now of the Madchester stuff on here, but the vast majority of these tracks just were not very good. Happy to see the back of it.
This was my first Primal Scream album. I feel like I’m missing something…maybe you have to see the movie? This album was all over the place. Maybe it grows on you over multiple listens, but I’ll never know. Eating a 2, because there were points when I thought they were on to something only to change directions again
Doubt that I come back to this one.
I don't really like Primal Scream... This didn't change my mind
I don't like it. One listen was enough
Oh boy... what a nap...
I didn't think much of this. Yeah it's got some funky bass lines but the singing is poor and once again technology and sound effects try to hide the lack of songwriting ability. Based on their reputation, I was expecting so much more.
This is a boring, but not terrible, example of the truly generic 90s vibe. The album would be fine as background music, but unfortunately it’s way, way too long for a focused listening.
Pretty boring tbh. Nothing catchy and just noisy really. Wouldn't liste to again.
Album came out when I was 17, an age where your brain is a sponge for music...never heard of this album before...and I know why, no real hits, too much instrumental songs...it was like sitting in an arty farty hotel lounge...don't really get it why this album is on the list...
I hear the “soundtrack” vibes, but it feels uneven and overwrought. Meh.
I recalling getting "Screamadelica" a few months ago, let's see how these guys evolved. A bit of the same, which isn't necessarily a knock. This psychedelia, electronic sound was sort of what I expected. Some of the non-vocal "instrumental" arrangements shine, while some of the others tend to blend in. Gets a little more traditionally alt-rocky near the back half of the album. Just alright, not as memorable as "Screamadelica" (not to say that was extremely memorable on its own either).
First track forgettable, Track 2 promising - it's pretty good track Track 3 - pretty good but like... Meat Beat and others did this style better Track 4 not good. All these tracks kinda sound like they used an 80s 808 Drum machine... in 97. kitchen sink of effects. 5... kinda good start. 6 is OK. 7... ok. 8. This sounds like a rock band... It's good - these guys probably have some good stuff, just not much on this album. 9. It's OK. 10. Good track. 11. Not loving it. Traditional Rocker discovers electronic music. Notable Tracks: Medication and Trainspotting. For 1997, I'm not sure why this is on the list.
Idc. Medication is the only remotely good song.
FAVO: Trainspotting
Kind of weird. Not as good as Screamadelica.
Do Primal Scream albums deserve to be on this list? 100%. Does THIS Primal Scream album deserve to be on the list? Erm.........................
Experimentellt
This ranges from dull to bad (ie tuneless noise). Not up my alley
ned so nice gfunde. glaub eis lied esch easy gsi. eif ned so mini stil oft so experimentell/artsy und das tönt eif oft ned guet
This had more electronic elements to it than I expected (the description says "rock band" but they do use a lot of samples and familiar drum patterns).
Odd mix. Not sure the genre. Feels like what they would think is “cool” music back in the 2000s.
I have a soft spot for Primal Scream as they did a show at my uni after Jason Derulo conned the uni out of a bunch of money. Saying that though, this album didn't really do anything for me. Not bad but no strong feelings on it, wouldn't listen again.
Not for me
When you take too much Benadryl, this album plays in the background as you duel the hat man.
Honestly, try why too hard to do something "cool" and atmospheric. Nowhere near as good as they think it is 2*
A case of ADS here. So much switching it felt like tuning a radio to find a song you like and then getting bored with it and fiddling again. Moments of joy are few.
Not terrible and nothing especially interesting.
Forgettable offering from Primal Scream with only a couple of notable moments. 'Trainspotting' is interesting enough for its duration, but it doesn't exactly grab you in the same way previous albums from the band had. This is a Tesco value Boards of Canada/Air. Best Tracks: - Trainspotting Worst Tracks: - Star - Stuka - Get Duffy Rating: 3/10
Das war mir zu experimentell
Not a great listen. "Medication" sounds like a song I might have liked back in 1991, but too bad this album was released in 1997. The singer's voice is terrible.
Nothing?
Nothing music
I never really got Primal Scream. I think I like them, but then I listen to them and I never really connect. Anyway, this was okay. Mid 2s.
I don’t really care for the out of tune singer, and not because they’re out of tune (I love Jane’s Addiction). Something about this singer irked me. So, I’ll take the instrumentals over the songs with singing, but mostly I’ll leave this one behind and never revisit it.
I can think of at least two things wrong with that artist name
Gear: ZMF Bokeh Artwork: 🔳🔳🔳 Production: 😵💫😐🤷♂️ Music: 🌀🎤😖 Rating: 🥯🥯/5
Not my favorite. Just felt like the background music to a video game loading screen for like half the time
Best Song: Trainspotting. Despite its slightly bloated length, I kind of dug the slowly evolving jam of it. Worst Song: Out of the Void. I truly hate this kind of wispy, come-hither style of singing. I can't help but imagine him singing lustfully from behind a sheer curtain, stroking it softly as though he's doing something enticing. Overall: Really dated electronic-influenced pop. Can't imagine ever having a distinct reason to return to this over any of its dozens of otherwise indistinguishable peers.
Quite a mixed bag but not too much of it does much for me. 4/10
That 90s dreary acid wash sound. Hoping to check out the Vanishing Point movie to get a better sense of the energy
Even if a genre of music isn't my thing, I can usually appreciate it in some capacity. This was total shit. 53 minutes of nothing. Half fleshed out songs where nothing really caught your attention.
A few really decent songs, a few really bad songs, the rest just okay.
It moves through sounds throughout the album in a pretty interesting way. I don't know if watching the movie will help me understand it more. I didn't love it, but here were parts that were pretty good.
cansado de este tipo de musica 90s
I think "Loaded" is one of the greatest singles of the 1990s, and the Screamadelica (1991) LP that single is one is on this list, so I guess we'll encounter that eventually. The other songs I know of theirs are "Rocks" (on the Give Out But Don't Give Up 1994 lp, not on the list) which is kinda a Black Crowes groove (vs the Madchester sound they are associated with) and "Movin on Up" (also in Screamadelica). So what I'm saying is I get why Screamadelica is on this list and I'll rate that one better than this, but I don't see why there are 2 primal scream lps here, especially this one. While I'll admit this LP was a nice balm after all the Dylan/Band 60s stuff the algorithm has thrown at us lately, it was too long (no one wanted 53 minutes of this) and superfluous if Screamadelica is already here. plus the cover of Motorhead by Hawkwind (and later motorhead) was not needed at all.
didn't get it really
Disappointing
This wasn’t fun. Not entirely interesting, but way too long. Side note, the hallway fire alarm in my building went off and I genuinely believed it was part of the song. This was not great. 2/5
Some pretty funky songs, some pretty spoony Overall not super inspiring
I was worried today was another death head metal day so honestly this wasn't soo bad. There were bad moments in Stuka and Motorhead but overall it was all palatable. It did just become one long techno trip where it felt like everything was from the movie Gone in 60 Seconds (or Trainspotting!). So I can listen to it, I can appreciate it, but I don't want to listen to it as an album again.
Well, that was strange. This album left me with mixed feelings. Some songs were good. Some felt like I was wandering in the desert on peyote.
This album kinda reminds me of Gorillaz early stuff, but a with fewer garage band vibes. I swear to god the song Suka uses the same flute sample as a Boards Of Canada song on Geogaddi. Very 90s. Pretty cool.
boring then, boring now
almost the definition of a hit or miss album for me. some of the songs were kind of cool psychy throwbacks and some were incredibly dull electronic-music-adjacent tracks that a dude is whining over. unfortunately the latter is most of the album and the former are only glimpses. so ultimately, not really my thing.
Reminded me of a worse version of Massive Attack.
Not my kind of music
Alright, but kinda boring.
Kind of interesting, but when that electronica kicks in I tune out.
Instrumentals. Gets old.
a few interesting moments but it doesn't do anything that a truckload of other 90s albums didn't do better
While I remember liking Primal Scream in the past, somehow this record is just not for me.
yeah, not doing much for me. I can see what they were trying to do, but it's like coffee with 2/3 the correct amount of beans. Just not there.
so boring. i am so indifferent towards this album. it's just so boring idk what else to say.
1001 albums i never want to hear again
wtf was that
Had its moments, but not many.
Too trippy
Jesus.. In my memories it was better band
An interesting (mostly) instrumental album. I wouldn't really choose to listen to it again, but it was fine background music while it was on
some good tracks, some 'meh'. As for "Motorhead", what were they thinking ?
Cool at times, annoying instruments and sounds other times.
By all accounts I should love it. I do not. Its simultaneously dated and too ahead of its time. A no from me, dog.
Nothing to see here, folks.
Trainspotting is cool but everything else was meh. Good rhythm section though
1.63
A couple songs kept this from a 1, but it was close.
Nothing to hold my interest. Back in the day, I had a friend who worked in a record shop who was really into Primal Scream, so I’ve already given this multiple chances and nothing sticks with me. Weirdly, my 4 year old, who loves turning my music off, said he really likes this?
Not my favorite, but not the worst ever.
I don't hear much interesting stuff for me. And that's pretty much it. It's an odd mix of many genres kept in a respectable boundaries. And maybe it needed a bit of more craziness in it.
Chilling wibing hommaa vähän smh s.h..
Definitely a headphone album. Not sure what I expected from a band called Primal Scream, but it was neither primal, nor full of screams. In fact it really felt like an album of soundscapes, versus a cohesive album. In fact Medication was the first song that had a more formal structure. Motorhead didn't sound like a Motorhead cover as I had hoped. The wierd soundscapes continue, but it alsmost feels like a different band. Trainspotting seems to be a return to the first part of this album. I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. It was a nice way to pass some time, but definitely not feeling the need to dig into Primal Screams discography to get more. 2 stars.
Not what I expected from a band name "Primal Scream". I didn't hate it, I didn't like it, I thought it was good background music. It was nothing groundbreaking in terms of music, and probably not something I'd revisit willingly. Although I'm sure I'll probably hear it in some movie soundtracks. 2/5
Background music
This was deeply boring.
dont get ut
Hmmm. A Primal Scream album and it's not Screamadelica, which I'm not really a fan of as it is. Don't tell me these guys get two albums on this list. Feels like trip hop meets Brit pop. It feels very British. So in their words, songs like Stuka were downright shite. Some songs had some decent beats but went on too long or got too repetitive - Burning Wheel, Medication, Long Life. Trainspotting went on waaaaay too long. Their Motorhead remake was interesting - didn't hate it, not sure if I loved it. All in all, I'm not really a fan of this album either. It's ok for a bit but quickly wears out it's welcome. A 2 may be a bit harsh but I'm going to make a point. There is nothing special about this album and unless you were connected to the UK in the 90's you probably won't feel a connection to it.
good ideas bad execution
Mostly annoying, aside from one song that sounded strangely like Al Stewart.
Crap 💩
Not good.
I like Star very much so I had hopes but unfortunately I found this one really tedious. I think it's a 2.5 overall, with a 5 for star.
Fairly inoffensive but very dull
Hmm… this was a difficult one to rate. Not a bad album but it just felt quite unfocused. It was an interesting mix of britpop and experimental rock with a more electronic and krautrock inspired sound. The opening track felt like a lazy Massive Attack rip off and the vocals were very hit and miss throughout, but on the whole the overall sound and atmosphere worked. Kowalski was a big standout and there were some other highlights dotted around but also a lot that didn’t work for me and a lot that was ok but just meandered
highlights: if they move, kill ‘em; medication (nov 26 2024)
As an album, I did not enjoy. A couple songs were ok - Get Duffy, Star - and I liked some of the guitar riffs on other songs. But overall a real slog.
This is kind of tough for me to rate, because I'm not in the mood. I don't know exactly what it is, but I'm not in the mood for it.
Painfully average with a lot of tracks that should’ve stayed on the drawing board.
This was pretty much poo, with a scent of spoiled trash.
2/5. I appreciate the experimentation and diversity of tracks on this album but unfortunately, they are not interesting or enjoyable songs. I thought it was a cool concept and it does succeed in providing an ambience, but it wasn't the right one. And although Star was a nice change of pace, it was just an okay song in general. Oh well, can't all be winners, but again, it wasn't terrible. Best Song: Star, Trainspotting, Motorhead
I was expecting some rock not whatever this is. Generally boring, music to zone out to. Experimental music should be interesting not just random sounds thrown together with some speaking. That being said, Star was ok. A redeeming track with a good instrumental. Highlights: Star
Vanishing Point is a mix of industrial and trip hop almost. It starts more industrial but as it goes, it moves more towards trip hop and even pop. Probably deserve more listens but didn’t catch my ear 5.6/10
The late 90s were doldrums for music and this is a reminder.
Honestly just based on the band name I was prepared for much much worse and ‘scream’ sounds but I just got boring. There just wasn’t much to this and I don’t quite get why or how it’s influential because to me it just felt like an hour of them struggling to decide what music they want to stick with. It obviously could have been worse however not for me.
My exposure to Primal Scream was almost exclusively their track "Kill All Hippies" which is awesome; wasn't sure what to expect from an entire album.... ...which ends up VERY very inconsistent in a different kind of way - e.g.: Songs like "Star" "Medication" and "Long Life" feel so out of place.... who doesn't like variety in an album but to jump from the hypnotic-techno-mostly instrumental jams that at least to my simple mind IS their style into a relatively facile, basic, and boring rock format that isn't very good at all... ehhh as much as the techno-jams *do* end up repetitive, that's sort of the point, and breaking out of that sort of disrupts the mood. Then on "Motorhead" they *almost* try to meld the genres, but it doesn't work. Anyways those specific songs suck and maybe especially because they end up as bad britpop turds in an electronic punchbowl. That's a party killer right there. The vocalist sucks and sometimes that's ok if you lean into other aspects, i.e. when he does the whisper-type non-singing which serves almost as an afterthought to a 99% instrumental.... that's your lane, pal. Sounding like a *bad* version of the singer from The Verve or a Gallagher brother is not a goal. TL;DR: I actively like about 4 or 5 cuts from this which is usually enough to garner at least a 3 from me but the odd nature of this as an album makes it sound like a shitty K-Tel sampler album and I wouldn't be able to actively listen to the entirety. So... Primal Scream is not an album band - stick to a few cuts on a playlist. 5/10 2 stars.
There’s some decent dance music on this disc but goddamn the band relies too much on the reverberation and oscillation sound effect machine - reminiscent of confiscating a Tickle Me Elmo doll from your 3yo and surreptitiously breaking it with a hammer in order to preserve your sanity. I blame Tarantino for this. He drops the Pulp Fiction album in 1994 and suddenly everyone (especially Brits) start making fictional (or hopeful, in this case) soundtrack discs. Hell, we got two in the 1990s from Barry Adamson alone. Weird.
eh
This was not primal, and there was no screaming. Not what I thought the band was. I pictured metal, I got semi-electronica. I'm don't view either favorably overall, with some exceptions. This was not an exception.
just not for me
I didn't really care for this. The song Medication was pretty good, but the rest just did nothing for me.
I don't get these guys. I just don't see the appeal. I find it boring. 2/5
D+
Kind of grungy psychedelic? I like Medication. Like Motorhead too.
Uhh not my thing.
Whatever
baffled at how little i enjoyed this. really like screamadelica. this was far more abrasive than any of their other stuff i’ve heard, and not for the better.
Occasional good moments but overall not great Standout songs: Star Medication
fuzzy and smelly and not that good
I don't really get these guys. I think some of their songs, where they actually sing are pretty decent, but there's too much tripped out, psychedelic noise. Way too much. Enjoyed Medication and thought this was the best song off this album. Thought Star and Motorhead were decent, but for the most part, I heard a lot of stuff I just don't really care to hear. Thought this was OK, but just not my listening taste and have no interest in revisiting. 2
Yeah sure, this was a bit unique versus other things I've heard so far on this list but it's not my style. Not a ton I can even think to write about it.
The mixing and production are interesting but feel a little immature. There are some cool bits but mostly too hyperactive and impulsive for me. Trying to at least pick one track I kind of like I'd say Long Life. This album just misses for me all over the place.
Wikipedia tells me it's going for krautrock, but the most I can see about this is IDM (a la Aphex Twin, and that's being generous) or ambient music. It's a tough line to walk. There are splashes of psychedelia and life here, but it is a mellow ride bordering on fully comatose. The Motorhead cover could have been much, much worse, though. Favorite tracks: "Medication", "Out Of this Void"
Not for me
I’ve made it to 1001! Here I am at the top of the mountain (almost), and I feel so accomplished. However, this record isn’t a very fitting one for the occasion. It is just so very meh. But maybe it’s fitting in the fact that it is mediocre UK rock because that seems to be the majority of this list. Hmm. Oh well, at least I’m here.
Don’t know why this album is here. Boring
Kinda boring
This sounded like the art on the walls of rental office space.
There were a couple of interesting tracks but it just felt like wierd-ass background music. Not much of interest here.
The (very) poor man's "Velvet Underground and Nico"
Background noise, but inoffensive.
The space-rock thing Primal Scream's going for isn't terrible, but it's very undercooked. Also, it's one of the few renditions of "90s space-rock" I've heard - and there's a reason there aren't many albums in this category. Without the low-production, experimental, semi-psychedelic charm of the 60s and 70s, there's just something lacking. Most notably, the melodies sound incredibly low-effort, as do the vocals. There's nothing in the form of catchy melodies, interesting (vocal) rhythm, emotion, drama, or really anything to hone in on in terms of singing. Instrumentally, my criticism is similar, but I'll give Primal Scream some leeway here because the mood set by the slow synths and light drumming is pretty nifty. Something else that disappointed me was that all the best tracks on the album - the run of tracks including Jesus, Know Your Rights, 96 Tears, and Rebel Dub - aren't even on the album. They're only included in the expanded edition. The exciting hard-rock guitars and high energy in some of those tracks boosted the album to a 3, until I checked and realised they weren't actually there! (Must've been my imagination.) 2/5 Key tracks: Star, Medication, Long Life
They have 2 albums on the list. This is the newer of the two. It’s more consistent. The music got better. The singing got worse. Really bad at times. Favorite song: kowalski
Some of the dub songs were chill and nice, but a lot the other songs were just terrible noise.
I can say without a shadow of a doubt that this singer thinks he's really, really cool.
+1 for the instrumental tracks
Not vibing with it Also if you’re gonna name your band primal scream, there needs to be some screaming
Kinda boring? They had a big album about 5-7 years before this...I assume that's on this list somewhere. Otherwise, I don't get it.
Never understood the love for this project. To me this sounds like Neo Psychedelia with annoying trip hop influences.
Better than Screamadelica, in my opinion. Still not very good.
Nice bass lines, boring everything else.
with a name like Primal Scream I kind of expected a little more out of this band
1 ⭐️ for sang 1-7 + Rebel Dub 4⭐️ for sang 8-14 + How does it feel…
More bad than good but still some good ideas on this album. I found myself anticipating the end more than anything unfortunately.
Some cool ideas and interesting sounds. It all just blends together but overall there are waaaaay worse albums on this list. Just listen to “Movin on Up” off Screamadelica and that’s all the Primal Scream you really need
Hmm: "anarcho-syndicalist speedfreak road-movie record" Some songs are very ok, other much too much "anarcho" for me ;-)
This isn't Screamadelica but it's not faqr off. It begins in an almost psychadelic Pink Floyd circa 1967 wqy before merging seamlessly into the thoroughly excellent 'Burning Wheel.' This trance, spaced out style wears out its welcome by the time Kowalaski finishes but 'Star' is a welcome respite and brings enjoyment levels back on track. All in all its too dance orientated for me but certainly interesting. I might paly it again one day.
Pleasant but forgettable.
It was good. Interesting. But nothing special.
Selten spannender oder guter Psychedelic Rock.
Not a fan!
Understand why it's here, just not for me.
From the title of the band I would have thought thrash metal so I was kind of surprised to find it was much chiller. Like if rock did trip-hop... Trip-rock? It's pretty good but some of the songs seem a bit pretentious and experimental but I didn't hate that. Just didn't love it
Completely forgettable and uninteresting.
Soundscape vibe; nothing profound. How did it make it to 1001 albums list?
A mess of ideas and styles - some songs are meant to be a soundtrack to a film, some songs are meant to be some dubby/ambient noise, some songs are indie rock and some are just bland Motorhead covers. Too much speed, too much incoherence. Best Tracks: Kowalski; If They Move, Kill 'Em; Trainspotting
A bit too much noise which I wasn’t particularly fond of
Größtenteils langweilig, stellenweise recht interessant. Ingesamt naja.
I'm getting some Achtung Baby meets Pretty Hate Machine energy. Is that just me? In any case it sounds older than it is. Except for Star, not sure what that is or where it belongs. I remember liking the other album by Primal Scream that the generator gave me, and reviewing that review all the songs reminded me of something/someone else too. Anyway, overall I found this album to be acceptable background music, but I didn't like it as much as Screamadelica and am not 100% sold on Vanishing Point's place on this list. Best song: If They Move Kill 'Em
Wasn’t in the mood
I've only ever heard screamadelica so let's see what this is like... Yeah it's exactly how I thought it would be lol. Boring
A little too chill
The album art had me a bit deceived. I thought this was going to be some driving and distorted guitar heavy music. But I am pleasantly surprised by what this album actually is. Despite my expectations being wrong in a pleasant way, I'm not sure I really actually enjoy this album. It's better than what I was expecting it to be, but there's a lot of misses for me on the album.
This is what the 90s sounded like. I dont love it. Gives me specific visions of 1997
is this a proto-meme?
If this hadn’t immediately followed Public Image Ltd’s Metal Box, I’d probably have given this a 1/5 too.
Didn't care for this one
Screamadelica is an awesome album and still gets played in our house, at least once a year, I'd say. I love that album, and I feel like I should know more about Primal Scream than I do. To that end, I've tried getting into Vanishing Point before. When it came up as today's album I thought "oh, yeah, that's a good one!" But then, when I start listening to it, I'm not so sure. Things I like: I love the track "Kowalski". I remember hearing it on late night Radio 1 when it first came out and being blown away. I like the sampling of Miles Davis's "On The Corner" and the early Pink Floyd type riff in the first song. I thought "Star" would be too sappy for me, but I like it. I love "Trainspotting" but then I love the Trainspotting soundtrack album. Things I don't like: The overall "vibe" of the album. It feels like Screamadelica's evil twin. Similarly to that album there's a few rock / pop songs in a sea of psychedelic dance tracks. But this album feels unsettling and dark somehow. That's an admirable quality in music if it's what you're after. But I prefer the blissed out feel of the "good" twin. Another way of putting it: It's just not as good! But I could possibly reduce the album down to 4 or 5 tracks and have an E.P. that I really loved, or half of a great album. In fact, here it is: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4D9jH61ldeGTxQBatmEhRj?si=9782f37d01004adc UPDATE: Mark mentioned "Echo Dek" is a dub remix of this album. Having listened to it, I vastly prefer that. Five stars to Echo Dek!
Huh. Not sure about this one. 2.5/5
Bit all over the place
I remember disliking Screamadelica and also didn't love this overall. The songs that don't sound like a video game soundtrack are fine, but nothing too special. With that said, I feel like some hardcore Primal Scream fan could change my mind, but until I come across that person, I'll keep channeling my inner crotchety old woman. Also, the album cover kinda blows.
4/10
I’m fairly mixed on this one. There are some interesting beats and it wasn’t an unpleasant album, as far as electronic music goes. However, there also weren’t any standout tracks, at least not to me.
Perhaps I listened to close to another Primal Scream album. Perhaps it’s just not that good. We will never know.
Not super interesting to me
Really quite dull, not representative of them at their best, not even close. Shouldn't be on the list.
It was fine. Not what I expected from "Primal Scream". 2
I can't say I'm a fan of Primal Scream, nor have I listened to much of their work. I love the film, Vanishing Point, this album, not so much. Nothing to get excited about and for the most part forgettable, at least I can't remember what I listened to. Reminds me a bit of U2, if U2 took acid and tried to be experimental. I can't understand why this is essential, but maybe you have to be in the proper mood. Clearly, I wasn't.
Forgettable.
No thanks.
This was put on in the background and really didn't divert my attention from what I was doing. So....meh. 2.5
Over produced
Could be fun. It has one of my favorite samples on it the drums on kowalski, but just dont feel like listening to this. It doesnt sound too good to me sadly.
This album is not good. That is all.
Not really bad, but fails to grab my attention. 2/5
Is this really the same band as Screamadelica? I mean, I wasn't crazy about that album or anything, but I actually liked a decent chunk of that one, where this one other than one more actual rock heavy tune in the middle I could not get into this, and at some point was actively disliking this, like whenever the songer decided to put on that cringey voice changer. THAT got hard to listen to. I could see a band like Radiohead being influenced by the electronics on this album, but I find it much more likely that they found that on their own merits as a good sound, and not on this record. Not bad enough for a one, but it's close.
A rather boring kind of background music
some primal sounds pretty random assortment of sounds not my favorite
Not keen on this one. Seems to lack a lot of anything
From the name alone I dreaded this album and wondered if it’d be another Napalm Death, so I was caught off guard when I didn’t hate what I heard. The album showcases a variety of instrumentals, from the accordion in “Star” to the catchy guitar riff in “Medication.” “Stuka” reminds me of “On The Run” from Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, and “Kowalski” sounds more like one of those prehistoric three-foot-long dragonflies got stuck in the Matrix than a penguin that got stuck in Madagascar. “Get Duffy,” and the album in general, sounds like James Bond on quaaludes. If one were to ask what it sounds like to cross metal with nineties alternative, Primal Scream’s Vanishing Point would be the answer, with a strong focus on the “nineties alternative.” There wasn’t much that stood out to me, but at least it wasn’t death metal.
Living up to their name, this album provided little, combining a genre I can somewhat tolerate (Krautrock) with a genre I tend to find completely unnecessary (90s electronic), this just doesn't bode well and doesn't offer anything appealing
This is like electronic noise rock. Noisetronica if you will. Star was a pretty good song. Stuka was not. The singer reminds me of The Verve. Some of the experimental aspects remind me of Radiohead. Idk about this one. Found myself headbopping a couple times, but spent more time waiting for the album to finish up.
This is the second fifth studio album in a row! They've stepped it up. Just plain weird. Inconsistent. Difficult to get into the groove... hmm, makes me want to listen to Madonna. Why is there only one Madonna in this list?
Nearly a three, liked several of the tracks more than anything from Screamadelica but none of them meshed well to form an actual statement as an LP. Wish there had been more focus on the synths mixed with the pounding drums and lively guitar, this at times almost felt evocative of proto-Black Moth Super Rainbow and I would've been all over that.
Not sure about this. I expected to hate it but when it started off I thought ‘ah nice one’. A bit trippy, bit weird. But after about 3 or 4 songs that are cookie cutters of the previous it gets old very quickly. Sounds like they just ran out of ideas. And some of the lyrics are lazy as fuck. Proper 6th form poet stuff at times. Not for me.
I didn't really enjoy it - genuinely didn't realise it was on. Hesitant between a 1 and a 2, but I can't say I hated it. It just didn't stand out.
This passed me by a bit, thought some of it was ok, but largely didn't really enjoy it. The songs with the robot voice thing annoyed me, but the ones with guitars were better. Medication was probably the best track, actually the last few weren't bad Won't be listening again
I liked the dub sound of Stuka. That is all.
I didn't love the first Primal Scream album I listened to, and I liked this one less. I don't understand why this is on the list, outside of a small pocket of people in the UK, who is listening to this?
2/11, 18%
Weird ambient low energy nothing of an album
Electrónica.
not my cup of tea
i thought this was pretty alright. ambience and atmosphere feels coherent for what its going for but i just wasnt hooked
Meandery, rock I guess?
Very late 90s, very busy, not my thing. A few interesting tracks, some variety I can get behind.
There's some ok stuff sprinkled in here but you almost forget about it amidst the sea of boring noises.
Pass
Meh
"The Lack of Focus: An Experiment" should be the name of this album.
Pretty okay background music
Had a hard time deciding whether this was good experimental stuff, or not. It definiely sounded very 90's for me somehow, and I liked some songs as mood setter background music, but the album never really punch through for me. The only track that really caught my attention was Trainspotting, which I liked, but that's not enough to cover up for the rest. I think this is going to have to be one of those albums that tried valiantly with its quirkiness, and ended up on the wrong side of the line. Still, not by any means so bad that I'd say "there's nothing I enjoy in this, burn it". 2 stars.
My experience with Primal Scream is limited. I was introduced to the band with XTRMNTR. I love that album and held the band in high regard because of it. I listened to Screamadelica, but wasn't impressed. Then I kind of left it there. I assume there is some merit on this album, but I'm not sure what it is. On a whole I was thoroughly bored throughout this album. I don't quite get my relationship with Primal Scream anymore.
Really hate to rate this one so low as I think Screamadelica is in my top 10 of all time and I actually really like their more bluesy stuff they did in the early 90s and the 2000s. This was just a mess though of no direction. Just layering on sounds and expecting magic would happen in the final product.
What a great band name- I love a good primal scream when I get a chance to regurgitate one. I dig this collage album cover too. I think this time period had a lot of album covers that had these slow-shutter-speed photos of movement in them and it hits both a nostalgia thing for me and also a visually emotional thing for me. Seeing a car with all of that blurry "movement" just gives me a feeling. The auto-pan of some instrument(s) on track one is very annoying. Super slow and gradual, the left to right to left to right is honestly just a nuisance. I'm not listening on headphones and usually panning is even more obvious when listening on headphones and I just feel "bleh" about that idea. The visuals are kind of where my enjoyment of this album stops. The heavy handed panning continues throughout the record, the songs feel kind of uninspired, and nothing really jumps out at me. If I was in a record store and I saw this album cover and the type on it, I would expect something energetic and exciting. I don't really get that here. The second most listened to song, "Star" is a laid back super positive sappy song that just hangs around a chord progression. The first song actually has some interesting elements and tension and release going on, but then they throw you into a weed den on track 2 with a track that is so laid back that the exciting voice is a bass clarinet that does a total of 0 exciting things. Of course this instrument is autopanned too because why not... I read that this was supposed to be like an alternative soundtrack to the movie "Vanishing Point" without any actual input from the movie people- so this is all just an album from this band that they made that is really influenced by the movie. That's interesting, and I can see some of these songs being OK to listen to while driving. I can appreciate the moments that are inspired by the dub genre, like in "Stuka", it has some interesting delayed conga hits along with the typical dub repetitive bassline. But that's kind of it- it's just a band that took some elements from a genre that is different and made some songs in that style. Maybe I'm being a little harsh but I didn't like this. I want to give it a 1/5 because I really didn't enjoy it and I hesitate to say it should definitely be on this list. I've given maybe half of the tracks a re-listen and I think it's fair to give it a 2.
rocklåtarna är ju goa men dom är få. resten är hopplöst
boring fuzzed rock
Meh..... Hahaha it's very okay but I'm definitely not blown away.
A lot more mellow and articulated than "an anarcho-syndicalist speedfreak road-movie record" made it sound. Certainly cinematic but overall a bit underwhelming. Everything from design to description made this sound like a thrash album and it just wasn't
Oh no... There is another Primal Scream record on this generator? Wasn't it torture enough to suffer through Screamadelica.... Apparently not. Why is every Scottish band on this generator bland as fuck? Where is the Celtic music? Where are the bagpipes? Is it too much to ask that you inject some energy into your music? As stated above, here is another album which has no signs of life... Just robotic boops and synthesized electronic garbage. This album generator has taught me that electronica as a whole is an awful genre.... Everything on that spectrum is talentless trash. I feel like Primal Scream was trying to do something that The Prodigy saw, took, and mastered. I don't mind the Prodigy's stuff, because it has a pulse. They put so much energy into what they do, whereas these idiots are dead in the water. Apparently the band loved the movie Vanishing Point, but didn't think the soundtrack did the movie justice, so a few songs on here are dedicated to that movie, and that's how the album got its name. Like the movie, this "album" is awful, and will be forgotten quickly. No redeeming qualities at all. Favourite songs: Medication (a perfectly good rock song. They kept the electronica horse shit out of this song. Why can't the whole album be more like this?), Motorhead (could have been a better song had they kept the electronica garbage and shouting robot sounds out of it) Least favourite songs: Stuka (sounds like it's sung by a robot who loves theramins), Burning Wheel (it takes a minute and a half for anything to happen), Get Duffy, Kowalski, Out of the Void, Long Life 2/5.
At times I felt I was at a loading screen for Animal crossing
Hard to listen to. Too sporadic.
PREFS : Burning Wheel, Kowalski, Motörhead, Trainspotting, Long Life MOINS PREF : Stuka
I thought Primal Scream was a lot harder music. I liked this album fine, but it didn't really hit me. It was kind of background music.
Interesting. Not my thing. 2/5
techno
Not very pleasant to listen to and kind of annoying sound to it all. Not a fan of this music.
2.5
Not pure electronic, but yet another 90s electronic album
I did not like this one. I liked a single song. Won’t listen again.
I like the back half of the album - Medication, Motorhead, Trainspotting, and Long Life do set a vibe while being distinct from one another. However, there are other "vibe" albums that I like more. Another reviewer said this is very reminiscent of a specific time and place and era, and that it doesn't really hold up longterm, and I'd agree with that assessment.
Wtf even is this. It's like Bob Dylan does alternative with reggae influences? I didn't find much to like.
Some songs are really cool but most of them were nothing i enjoyed
Didn’t like
I thought this was going to be aggressive and annoying based on the band name and the cover art. Instead it inspired apathy.
another reviewer described it as “background music” and i feel that
I barely remember a single thing about the other primal scream album and this one appears headed to the same fate. This is a good one to listen to high though. The interesting album drought continues I suppose.
Gross (except for the few songs that sound like The Jesus and Mary Chain).
Do all of the drugs before listening to this. Bit of a strange sound
90s alt rock, some hip hop influence perhaps? psychedelic at times, but in a more modern, urban-sounding way than early psychedelic rock Didn’t mind it but I didn’t care for it I can imagine why someone might think this was cool
Got excited when I saw 1997, but a bit of a letdown. I wasn’t a big fan of the instrumental/experimental parts.
The instrumental parts reminded me of video game background music. I enjoyed some of it, but for the most part the songs didn’t hold my attention very well.
Interesting….
dissapointing
This band is so ludicrously inconsistent. Every so often you'll hear something badass, and then you'll get a really dated-sounding canned drum loop. It meanders from wiffly Britpop to big beat to electropop without any sort of flow to it. This is a band that could have benefited from a much better producer.
It was meh for me, but unobjectionable enough for me to give it a 2.25
Not my bag. Odd good song but can't imagine listening to the album in full again.
one of the easier to listen to albums i've recently been recommended by the list. not saying i like it, but at least it wasn't pushing me away. A lot of it melds together, giving it a soundtrack feels. Overall is a weirder album. No standouts
I'm not inclined to say a band or an artist is "overrated", music obviously being an objective thing, but oh boy am I tempted to say that Primal Scream fits into such a category. I could personally tolerate the inclusion of *Screamadelica* in a list of so-called "mandatory listens, mostly because this particular album has something to say about the time and place it was realeased, with those UK club breakbeats and whatnot. But c'mon, let's be serious here for one second, fellas: even for that "historical" album, the writing is subpar at best, not to say totally lazy. Worse; some "songs' are just glorified instrumentals with a few vocal snippets here and there--and you'd have to take a shitload of MDMA to hear something substantial or even just fun in those tracks, something that's won't be there at all when you use more sober ears. What about this particular album then? Well, just like many other Primal Scream albums it just drones on in the background, a mixed bag with a few hooks here and there, but without any cohesion at all, and with moments of intensity that are too far and between. As usual, the main influence when it comes to the melodic lines come from the Rolling Stones, at least if you pay some attention. But it's a somewhat sanitized version of the Stones, mixed with the current trends of that year. Which amounts to say that in the end, there's not much to be found there in term of substance. At least Jagger, Richards and their pals knew a thing or two about how they could make a song feel "dirty"--in all senses of the word. Whereras in here, it's just a pale imitation, barely veiled by the supposed "high value" of its production shenanigans. The result is just boring to these particular set of ears here. And reading a lot of the other reviews in here, to many other ones as well... Number of records left to review or just listen to: 921 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 42 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 19 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important to me): 19 (including this one)
This is mostly just drum and bass with a bunch of electronic effects over the top. Nothing of any interest. Some nice grooves, but going nowhere. I'd had enough after a couple of minutes, but I persevered for half a dozen tracks, getting more and more bored until the vibe changed with Medication. At first it sounded pretty good, I soon realized it was basically just 'rocks off' with different lyrics, so I'm not impressed.
Don’t hate this, but no standout hits for me. Not sure I’d ever listen to the whole album again.
Feels like a practice run for XTRMNTR. The Vanishing Point movie connection is more exciting in prospect than in reality. Like all Primal Scream records, it's better when Bobby isn't singing.
2/5
“The group does rock with a certain trashy appeal.”
Primal scream have some decent songs. Didn’t put any on this album though. Though star isn’t bad.
Doesn’t know what it wants to be. All over the place, couple of decent tracks but that’s it.
Just not for me. I could see someone who loves the genre liking the album because its solid all the way through. While I didn't hate it, it was a one and done for me.
This album is just so bland and uninteresting. Sounds very late 90s too, if anything. 3/10.
2.5/5 Trippy album, more background music. A bit too experimental for me. Favourite songs: - Star - Medication
Didn’t put me into a calm prism, too busy and not catchy. Not awful, but not a game changer.
2 1/2
Definitely not something I like. Mostly ambient noise with little differentiation between songs. Could not finish the entire thing because I found it boring.
I was really expecting some excitement based on the name of the band & the album title but this thing sucked.
2.7 - After enjoying Screamdelica, I was expecting to like this but the beats sound dated, the vocals flat and the arrangements excessively noisy.
Similar experience as with the earlier Screamadelica. Annoying vocals, music mostly quite boring. Waste of time for me.
not as creamy as I thought its was going to be
First Listen. Not bad. Like to hear more. Not sure yet. Standouts: Kowalski, Star 2/5
I wasn’t sure if I’d like this but I ended up enjoying how chill it is. The first half is better than second half.
I just don’t get it. It didn’t bore me much. That’s the best I can say. Better than Screamadelica.
No screams, let alone primal. I wanted something raw, guttural, from the soul. Instead, it was... I don't know, what was it? One moment it was Brit-pop, the next it was NIN-lite, the next it was trance-y/trip-hop, then it sounded like Radiohead... I'm convinced this album was made by four different bands, not one. The only connecting tissue I found was that I think multiple songs had weird background moaning about "original sin?" There is definitely some decent and listenable stuff in "Vanishing Point," but it is too disjointed and scattered to rate highly as an album. I liked "Trainspotting." But I didn't keep track of which song was which style to comment further, and Primal Scream didn't do enough to move me to go back through it for a re-listen to figure it out.
When I saw Primal Scream, I thought some death metal was coming. Luckily no. However, this album wasn’t much better to me. I didn’t run to turn this off like I would with death metal, but I did listen to a couple minutes and skipped the rest of most tracks. Medication was the one highlight for me.
2/5 nope
better than silence
Would have said 1 star but there was one decent song on this....Transportation or something
not my thing
it came from the nineties. kinda derivative. never got into this when it came out, nor now.
