Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Liked it. Will revisit later to select a single track
Fav: Trainspotting Notes: Some good grooves
Pretty cool vibe on this one, though can't really say after a few listens if anything really sticks out. Sounds good in headphones and on the stereo.
Low trip hop vibes. Reminded of a few other bands. Heard of the band, but not positive if I've ever actually listened to them. Enjoy time spent with the album, not positive if I could differentiate from a few other bands
Not really my cup o'tea but I'll give it a three.
5/10
Lite överabetat album men de kommer undan med det.
Quite a journey. There are songs that I loved, and also songs that had me thinking "what on earth am I listening to?" Comes down to a 3 star rating overall. It was very up and down, but I do think I will revisit this one.
If nothing else, Primal Scream never repeat themselves. Part reimagined movie soundtrack, part indie-rock, part hip-hop/electronica experimentation - it's got a bit of everything, you might argue, except for straightforward chart fodder. Except for Star, which is great. If that sounds like a bit of a dig, it really isn't - the more you listen, the more rewarding Vanishing Point gets. It is less accessible than you might expect (it's predominantly instrumental) but still, it's expertly crafted, it just sometimes maybe lacks killer melodies to match the rock solid beats and chunky bass foundations. Much like the cover art, you might take it as a bunch of fairly random but cliched elements thrown together, but, ultimately, I think the end result is pretty cool.
Sounds more like a movie soundtrack than a proper album, but I wasn't mad about the trippy psych grooves. Another situation where I'm enjoying an album, but the second it ends and Spotify auto-plays something from a different album, I immediately enjoy that next one more.
Fine in the background. Light 3.
Indie rock without much focus. Some electronica sounds along with some rock and roll. Best song is Medication, but overall not really special.
This is not a good album to pick up this project again after 2 months. very Whatever.
Sorta feels like background music from the Soderbergh Ocean’s Eleven trilogy, but… it’s missing the Ocean’s trilogy.
After two duff unit-shifters, it is a relief to listen to something uncynical. A pointless accompaniment to a film that was already soundtrack, the band justify the meandering, unfocused sound and sequencing. Although uncynical, as I say, it lacks the sincerity that makes the loved-up Screamadelica and the aggressively niave XTRMNTR work. The earnestness of those works excuses, perhaps even elevates, Bobby Gillespie's poor vocals, lyricism, and songwriting. Even Rocks, Jailbird, and Damaged, et al, are genuine imitations. The performance here of whatever happens in the film I haven't seen doesn't seem to come from Gillespie himself and Gillespie was always the weakest element of Primal Scream - sometimes he sells it, sometimes he doesn't. However, the rest of the band make a decent stand at trip-hop, although Mani will do better work on his second record with the group. 3 I haven’t listened to this in years but I really enjoyed hearing it today. Truthfully there is nothing brilliant in here at all but everything is interesting. Primal Scream are pushing every button in the studio to see what it does. There are lots of funny noises and haunted house pans - here are ghosts of (brilliant) Primal Scream past and future. I do love that Kowalski was the choice for first single. 2.5/5
This one kind of hovered in the background for me. It’s got a smokey, dubby vibe with some nice instrumental stretches. I like that it doesn’t feel like it's trying too hard - just lets the groove do the work. Maybe a couple tracks for the “zone out” playlist. Not bad, not great. Just kinda… there. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Get Duffy - Star - Trainspotting - Long Life
Never really got into Primal Scream. Seems like it should be in my wheelhouse, but it doesn't resonate with me the same as some of their contemporaries. This was fine overall though. 3/5
Equal parts psychedelic and paranoid. "Vanishing Point" feels like a tribute to a much seedier side of the 60s that you might have seen glimpses of in some the Velvet Underground's work. But whereas VU were tied up in the pop art of Andy Warhol's work, the images presented by Primal Scream recall something more gritty and uncomfortable. Forgotten B-movies and the ultra-violent work of Sam Peckinpah (the Quentin Tarantino of his day) can be felt throughout this record, though it's also ultra-modern and experimental. As in their previous work, they incorporate many elements from the 90s electronic music scene, including dance beats and ambient textures. It all contributes to the uneasiness of the album. I had this album back in the day and just never knew what to make of it. I still struggle with it. I can hear a lot that's very interesting, but it also feels kind of all over the place, probably by design. Whenever it starts to make sense, it suddenly moves into a different direction. Yet, it needs to be heard as a whole. I very much want to love this album, but I just can't quite crack it open. It's definitely interesting though.
I found it a bit underwhelming and homogenous, but not without its high points. 7.5/10
This album is dark, trippy, and filled with mind-bending rhythms and cinematic flourishes. I would have appreciated it more if the entire effort was just instrumentation.
Has really cool ideas and some fun, unique trippy parts, but half of the tracks feel like filler, with how simplistic and repetitive they are. Eventually the album stars to drag a little.
Wanted to like it but it’s lame. Not two stars lame just boring and emotionless. Still, this is an insult the other three star reviews I have given. This is why we need half stars in the rating system. Manufactured, sound effects 90s rave music that didn’t have its coffee in the morning.
Trainspotting is one of my favorite movies so that track is the obvious highlight. I want to like this and Screamadelica but feel the subtleties just fly over my head. It's a very cool vibe I enjoy, I can see how some love but most of it was just background noise for me. Maybe one day it will click Rating: 2.8
Overpromises and underdelivers a little, this one
Half of this was great mood electronica, half took you out completely especially when they sang. Stand-out: Get Duffy
Is this gonna be another one of those 'it's just noise albums'? God i hope not... It wasn’t. That was just ok
With a name like Primal Scream I expected a lot more raw power and noise so this album felt pretty tame comparatively. It's a run of the mill Brit-Rock entry that wasn't necessarily bad but also didn't send me "Out of this Void." I liked the mix of random sounds (except on "Star" where I kept thinking a trash truck was causing neighborhood dogs to howl) and the ambient feel on some tracks. Mid entry so mid rating at 2.5 plus .5 for the Augustus Pablo feature brings VP in at 2.55.
Vanishing Point is noisy at times but it's got a Beckish, Jesus-Jonsey, Gorillaz vibe and I dig it. A few duds with "Stars" and "Out of the Void" but overall a pretty good record. Top track "Trainspotting." I checked out some other work by Primal Scream and although their earlier work is poppy alt-rock (decent), they turn it up with this album and get that space-age electro-rock sound...I'm in to delve deeper. I was down for most of the VP ride and have added the movie which inspired the album to my watchlist. 3.05 stars.
I feel like I may have previously heard of this album strictly due to the track titled Trainspotting. Despite this I didn't really know what to expect going in. First half of the album didn't do much to grab me. Second half was much better with a couple songs I enjoyed. Not sure what puts this on the 1001 but I guess its got a pretty good mix of some unique sounds. There isn't much I would knock it on. Middle of the pack entry which isn't necessarily a bad thing. 2.73 stars
Thought this would be better
I've only ever listened to Screamadelica so I was looking forward to listening to more Primal Scream. Yea I feel like they should've stuck with what they were doing before. The electronic stuff isn't bad or annoying or anything just nothing special. Sounds like every other mediocre electronic album from this era. Favorite track: Medication
This sounds like it would be the bridge album between Blur and Gorrilaz. It has that Brit rock sound mixed with electronic bits. This is a jammy, spaced out type of album. An album that you could leave on in the background for any occasion. Well, maybe not a kids birthday.
Don’t see why this one was needed since Screamadelic is already on here. 3/5
Eigenwilliges schottisches Potpourri aus Trance Elemente und Rockelementen. Das ganzheitliche Konzept erschließt sich nicht beim ersten hören. Insgesamt aber hörbares Gesamtwerk z.B „Medication“.
Neither Primal or Screaming. I want my money back.
I'd listen again
Aprobado. Y nada mas
Good music to listen to while ripping carpet out
Very low key early 90’s almost soft grunge
1st Album in this 1001 listening experience. Noticing familiar rifts, now knowing where they came from! Seems like a lot of samples from this album used by other artists later.
Weird choice for 1001 given that Primal Scream has two other legit decade-defining classic LPs in Screamadelica and XTRMNTR. Seems like it was put together to re-sell the Trainspotting single, which is mostly good for the Jean-Jacques Perry sample it is built on.
This is the first album in this exercise that's by a band I have some familiarity with! The bad news is this album is no XTRMNTR (and somehow that album didn't make the 1001-album cut? what the hell?). Where that album had purpose and drive, this one feels comparatively ramshackle and scattered. The good news is it's still a decent album; what it loses in focus it gains in variety at least.
Liked this more than I thought I was gonna.
This strikes me as a record that wouldn't be on the list if 90s British Music wasn't over-represented here. But I also dig it; a bit uneven but definitely something I'll listen to again. I say "three starts by the skin of its teeth".
Screamadelica is an all time favorite. But somehow I never listened to this other one by them. Very different. Very late-90s. Very good. A little bit trip-hop, a little bit industrial. I did recognize the one track that made it onto the Trainspotting album. "Star" is pretty great, too. But I still prefer Screamadelica.
Pretty catchy. 3 or 4. May need to be in the right mood.
i was expecting classic primal scream going into this album- i had always liked their stuff but thought of it as pretty one dimensional. so it was a real shock when i put this on and get almost exclusively massive attack style trip-hop! even more of a surprise 2/3 of the album through when "medication" comes on and it's right back to greasy garage rock ala classic PS. a really interesting twist of an album but admittedly probably not one i'll replay
Cool electro beat groove guitar fusion. I’m about a 3.5 with this but not quite thrilled enough to pop it up to 4. The Star song is a little cheesy but I appreciate the sentiment. Love your brothers and sisters. Next song: kill everyone that moves. Okaaaayyy then.
Vanishing Point feels like a transitional album between the raw bluesy rock of the Primal Scream of the early 90’s and the electro metal aggression they move towards with 2000’s very awesome album, XTRMNTR. This album has some fine groovy moments, and it feels very 1997 electronica, but overall it also feels like their true vision hasn’t quite sharpened up yet. All great bands have these transition albums, and that takes nothing away from their greatness, but only solidify’s the perception that their intent is pure because they explore and pursue.
I like the rock and electronic elements, but most of the album feels like something you put on in the background. Sounds very spacey which was cool though. A lot of it kinda reminded me of trip hop, which I usually enjoy, but it wasn't that memorable. The more rock based songs were alright, nothing too bland or extraordinary. Will I Revisit?: low priority Current rating: 6/10
A little hit or miss. The chill funky vibes in tracks like If They Move, Kill Em and Trainspotting were highlights for me, but not a lot from this is going to stick.
3.75
Not bad, pretty forgettable though
Not bad
First time hearing of or listening to this band which is too bad because if it had found its way to me around release time I could see being into them in a big way. I enjoy the mix of genres and having ambient with lyrics is nice. I can see listening to them again, in the right situation.
Very good, but not exactly my type of a thing. This is one of those albums where I had no idea how big it was at the time. It seems like almost every song is something I'm pretty sure I heard on some movie, TV commercial or TV show in the late 90's. Not sure if I'll go back to this but I do appreciate it
Much better than I thought it was going to be when I finished the first song and looked how much was left to go, but I won’t be listening to any of these again
Prefer the other stuff I’ve heard from Primal Scream. But I liked it. Simpsons: No
Wasn't the worst on the list
Meh, Didn't really do much for me. Just kinda was.
Not my kind of music, but was fine for once
Ok I guess
Good background music, jazzish style to it in a way.
Meh
It has some good moments - but feels quite dated and a bit joyless (stark comparison to screamadelica). I saw them at Glastonbury in 97 and assume they must have been playing his album - all I can remember is they were pissed and awful.
Not sure what I expected Primal Scream to sound like, but I don’t think it was this?! This was a lot more instrumental and less rocky than I was thinking it would be. I'm not sure I particularly enjoyed it per se, but it wasn't the worst thing on this list. It's a 2.5 but I've kindly rounded up
It’s alright I guess; kind of a post-Madchester meets sampledelia thing. Sounds like the soundtrack to some late 90s British gangster film that would be shot entirely through a yellow filter. Would improve with some trimming as some of these songs go on far too long.
Groovy and neo-psychedelic in a generally positive sense. But maybe trying to more than it can realistically claim to be. "Star" is great and so too "Trainspotting." The opening cuts set a high bar but "Stuka" really mires things midway through. "Kowalski" also more trouble than it's worth. Iffy vocals really hold this back throughout.
great innovative
It was nice enough that I listened to it three times. My girlfriend was unexpectedly Happy by how chilled it was because she judged them by the name hahaha
I'm a big fan of The Stone Roses and when they brought in the front man from that band with this album it really struck a cord. This will be a nice add to my list. Some of it doesn't connect tho, hence the three stars.
Somebody got a new synthesizer for Christmas.
I guess I never got into these folks in high school. I did listen to similar stuff, but not this. It sounds ok. I enjoy track 5. I can't fit this into a single category. There's an electronic vibe to it, but it isn't techno at all. It's as if God Lives Underwater was more like Orbital and nothing like God Lives Underwater. Not sure if that makes sense. I prefer God Lives Underwater. This is pretty decent trippy 90's music. Stuka is dope. I'll slap a 3 on this.
I don't know much of The Stone Roses, but "Burning Wheel" is reminiscent of what I think of when I think of this song. I hear some Brian Jonestown Massacre too. A slow, atmospheric build into jangly, spacey brit-pop. But lest one mistake the lead track to be indicative of the rest of the album, the second track "Get Duffy" moves towards psychedelic elevator music that you'd hear (or at least imagine you hear) at Kmart at 2AM. And then "Kowalski" is more of a 70's cop theme experimental dreamscape with sampled words overlaid on top. "Star" is the first 'traditional' song, with a relaxed, hazy feel that evolves into clunky percussion. At this point, I don't know what else to expect; Primal Scream seems willing and able to do anything. Blending beats, thick 70's bass, hypnotic synths, samples, wah pedals, and layered with plenty of effects, Primal Scream apply their sound and time equally to groovy freak-outs, instrumental pieces, and song-writing. Much like Pink Floyd's "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict", the psychedelia is turned up to 11, and could benefit from toning it down just a bit. It's similar to Skrillex in throwing in various sounds and effects every second when spacing them out to maybe even 5 seconds would make the music less of an assault on your attention. (Though Skrillex applies this technique in a more frantic meth-friendly direction, Primal Scream applies it in a contemplative, acid-induced environment.) Though "Star" is the best song here, "Stuka" and "Trainspotting" stand out as the best groovy space-out beats. I like that they make equal room for songs and beats; it's not predominantly either type of album, and is refreshing in that aspect. Still, not all tracks find their footing.
It's not really my thing but there were aspects of it that I liked
You know, Primal Scream is a very misleading name for a band. How many people would look at this album and assume that it’s going to be something like an alternative metal album or something similar? Thankfully, I was aware of the band prior to this to keep my expectations in check. Anyway, this was pretty middle of the road for me. Some of this was pretty good for what mostly feels like more of a psychedelic vibe with a nice industrial touch. But some of it just kind of goes on, without leaving much of a personal impact. I guess I’m not really a fan of albums that seem to be more for playing in the background and “vibe” too. Favorite track: Kowalski Other hits: Get Duffy, Stuka, Medication
The album hits a real high from ‘Kowalksi’ through ‘Star’ and ‘If They Move Kill ‘Em’. Great album - very high 3 stars
I've seen Primal Scream 3 times, but never as the main draw, and two of those were headliner shows. That is my problem with them, they can be very hit and miss. This album has some really great tracks like 'Burning Wheel' and 'Kowolski' and then the rest is nothing special. They try to please too many with too many different styles and just doesn't gel. Bobby's singing is nearly as good as his dancing, but that doesn't matter as he does try, and everyone loves a trier. (Again it's still miles better than Deep Purple).
This is a thing I’ve noticed British bands sometimes do which is start there album with ambient noise you have to sit through that is completely divorced from the actual track. Don’t do that. That’s dumb. Anyway, hey I recognize that album cover! Not this one, Screamadelica. I don’t know anything about it. Other than people like it. I kept waiting for Jesus Jones’ Right Here Right Now to start during the first song. Which is damning with faint praise. Hmmm. Nothing here is bad. Should it be in here. Ehhhh, probably their more acclaimed album? But this I have a harder time justifying. I like the jazzy parts. I just don’t know that I’ll remember listening to this in a year. I do really like the concept of this album. An alternative soundtrack of an old movie. That’s fun. Problem is I haven’t seen said movie. Hrm. This is a 3 stars that legitimately could be more or less. I really don’t know how to feel on this one. I like it artistically but not as music if that makes sense
OK ba k ground music. Very 90s feel to it. Really hated some songs and others were groovy.
This is not at all what I thought a band called "Primal Scream" would sound like. I even read the Wikipedia page and the description on this site and I still would not have guessed how much Brit-pop and less electronica was found on this album. There were also more instrumentals than I had expected. Medication sounds like something the Rolling Stones would have written in the 90's. Depending on your view, that can be good or could be bad. Vanishing Point starts off strong and does get a bit monotonous in the middle prior to Medication but then picks up again. I enjoyed this album more than I had anticipated that I would, mostly because it was not what I thought it was going to be. I expected an album of electronica and super-repetitive beats that made me grind my teeth and it was not entirely that. There are hints of rock, brit-pop and even glam rock on here. Better than expected.
I wasn’t expecting much but I found myself jamming out to this. Definitely unique.
Interesting enough that I'll listen to it again.
I expected a band called "primal scream" to be much less mellow.
Rocky and kind of frenetic, but yet another artist whose songs I've probably heard at the local pub.
Listened Before? N Pretty good! Creative and original sounding. I enjoyed it. "Star" is a standout amongst many other less accessible songs. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Star
This was ok.
Cool stuff
I do like a lot of primal scream but every time I listen to an album? I’m left just somewhat underwhelmed.
It was ok
I liked most of the instrumentals better than the songs with vocals, although "Kowalski" was pretty good. The other songs with vocals just didn't hit me much. The instrumentals had some groove to them, but it's not a good thing to dislike the singing. Did not even recognize "Motorhead." That's not good. Top tracks: "Kowalski," "Star," "Long Life," "Get Duffy"
It was fine, but not sure what made it list-worthy
Reichlich experimentell...
some of the chillest, most atmospheric instrumentals you’ve ever heard broken up by some of the blandest songs ever. maybe 5 stars if it was all instrumentals
Неплохо, особо не зацепило
I was skeptical going in, having never heard of the band, but this was pretty good. It's moody and kind of heavily instrumental, but it's a nice psychedelic groove CD. There's some creativity and diversity in the sound. It's too low-energy for my taste, and I probably wouldn't put it on again, but it was kind of nice.
2.75
Some interesting didn’t know what to expect!
pretty nice to clean the house to
This is not at all what I expected, and was fairly enjoyable.
Quite liked this for some reason. It's a (pseudo) soundtrack album, one of my least favourite genres. And it's electronica!
I don't get it.
Cool
Solid background music.
Ehh. I want to like it and I kind of do.
I was never the biggest Primal Scream fan, but there were certain early trax that it was impossible not to like, such as Loaded and Rocks, always a personal fave. However, having never heard this album before, I ran through it a few times and found it to be astonishingly good, without the help of drugs. I have the book, Creation Stories(2013), by the label’s founder, Alan McGee, and he describes them as a “drug band” at the time they made this album. Whatever, this record is thoroughly enjoyable. The major emphasis is on the music. In fact, with the exception of Medication, which reminds me of Rocks, and the cover of Motorhead, there’s nothing rock here - it’s almost like listening to an instrumental album, with light vocals & weird vocal effects here and there. They like their space noises, particularly on Out Of The Void & especially on If They Move Kill ‘Em, which also features funky guitar that could be a Shaft outtake. Kowalski is something else. McGee recounts in the book how he had to override his own A&R staff to have it released as a single, to please Bobby Gillespie, who wasn’t really talking to him at the time. It was a Top Ten in the U.K. started listening to this album expecting to be bored, but really loved it. The melodica of Augustus Pablo on Star was a real bonus. Love this.
I wasn't a huge fan of this album. It's not bad but it didn't do much for me.
Thought I would like this more than I actually did - hasn't aged well. Still some gold there, but it feels more like a warm up album, better things to come.
Whoa! They would be an incredible U2 cover band. I dig their sound but something is off. The energy is wonky between the music, vocals, and lyrics. I have no idea what they were singing about. Surprised this one is rated so poorly.
This one did not really draw me in. I suspect it falls victim to my having heard albums based on it that I enjoyed more.
Was okay, but didn't really do too much for me.
This album has a mix of soft songs and not so soft tracks, the soft songs are nice to have on in the background while the not so soft tracks are a bit more jarring compared to the softer tracks. I did find that some of the tracks feel a little bit too long. Overall I don't have any strong feelings towards this album so I will give it a 3/5.
Bleh. 2.5/5
Neva heard of these folks before! It’s ok! I liked “Star” and “Medication.” And “Trainspotting” was vibey.
Not available Mexico
Solid overall. Not their best work.
3.4/5 listened 3x
This album is like a box of chocolates, never know what you're going to get! Is it metal? Is it Indy Folk? Is it angry shrieking with pounding percussion? Yes!
An ok album by Primal Scream, might make more sense and might enjoy it better if I had more context by having seen Vanishing Point the movie. Best: Kowalski Worst: Long Life
A weird combination of genres that doesn't pay off in a satisfying way. In fact it can get quite grating. What I will give this album is the fact that it paved the way for Gorillaz to do the same thing but infinitely better. With that being said, the production is excellent, and there are a few moments where I could grove a little. Though those were too few and far between that it doesn't stick with me.
This just feels incoherent. There's a few pretty good tracks available, but I can't quite see how the massive variety of styles patching in between the "trad" Primal Scream stuff just doesn't quite work.
It seems that Primal Scream got a little experimental after achieving success with their more dance club-leaning sound and… I’m kind of here for it. It doesn’t always work, and as a result, it hits lows that feel much much lower than anything heard on Screamadelica (seriously, wtf was Stuka and Motorhead?), but when it does, it hits what feels like career highs. In particular, Burning Wheel, Kowalski, Star, and Medication were all favorites of mine and tracks that I would consider among the best that I’ve heard from the group (which is admittedly only this and Screamadelica). Overall, I would say the highs outweigh the lows here. Some of the stuff definitely reminds me of electronic stuff I’ve rated poorly in the past, but for the most part, I found this to be a well-paced album and somewhat of a vibe - though, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping for a little more British wankery and ruffianism given that there’s a song here written for Trainspotting.
Rock electrónico y neo-psicodelia. Ni fu ni fa.
Bien, pero muuuuuuuuuuy largo y pesado.
Interesting...liked most of it. Strong 3.
Haven't heard the album before, but I've seen them live and didn't enjoy the show. I expected to dislike the album. At their best, like Medication and Motorhead, they sound like Jesus & Mary Chain (founder Bobby Gillespie's former band). The more experimental stuff didn't resonate with me. "We're moving like a parallelogram"
Never really checked out Primal Scream because I assumed it would be full of, you know, primal screaming and caterwauling and such (cough... PJ Harvey... cough). Wasn't what I expected and generally enjoyed it.
best wel grappig
Some songs I really liked while others I could barely get through. I guess I'm not a fan of the heavy, industrial sound so tracks like Kowalski or Stuka only got on my nerves. On the other hand, I loved Get Duffy, Out of the void, Trainspotting and Long life. I guess I need to find a middle ground so I'll rate it a three, but... As far as 90s music goes, this was fairly decent. I'll definitely check out other music by this band. 3.5 stars
Too long but decent listen.
Yup. That was there
I quite like Primal Scream and repetitive music like this is good for my slower runs. I also like the heavier electronica/industrial sound. However, I did get a bit bored (on my run, no less) listening to this so that's not great. It's a high 3/low 4 rating for me. Fave Track: Kowalski Rating: 3
I’m thinking the guy who made this list is British.
Sehr anstrengend
This is not at all what I was expecting this band to sound like based on their name. It was pretty middle of the road eclectic rock music, obviously pulling from dub, ambient, dance, krautrock, etc. But it's just kind of whatever to me.
Interesting. Liked some parts a lot and other parts not so much.
Fine.
Weird, but it was a fine album for a Tuesday.
Sound and fury but where's the music?
Cool
Having never heard of this before, I was a bit unsure of what a 'Primal Scream' might sound like but found it to be surprisingly good.
Theres big positives on this one. The weirder bits on the album are great. There are times when it fades back in to like brit pop stuff that doesn't match the vibe of the album, and it just feels more random than groundbreaking. but then like Star is good. Album is too long too. I think sometimes people think, if its weird it HAS to be long, but length itself doesnt make something strange, its all about the different parts coming together in a better way. Still think its good, but just feels like its a bit all over the place. High 3?
Inoffensive, mellow, chill rock-ish music with house and dub influences. Not my thing but enjoyed listening to it. Well done to the musicians.
very out there and unique album in some ways, songs I hadn't heard before but it also kind of went in one ear sort of thing. But glad we got this one!
yes very interesting
An enjoyable experience that didn't match a single expectation I had. Primal Scream has this effect on me where I only appreciate it about 5 months after I listen for the first time, so this might be a 4 later this year. Favorites were Star and Medication.
This very much reminded me of Massive Attack in that the band name makes you think the music would be much heavier and louder than the trip hop we are given. That is not to say that this is bad. The many stylistic changes and sounds keep things interesting throughout. Not a fan of the weird vocal effects in Stuka. My favorite songs were Burning Wheel, Star, Medication, and Motorhead.
Not very good but some interesting arrangments 3*
As full of 90s cafe jams as actual songs, I guess it was innovative at the time?
Interesting. Alright. apparently i had a primal scream already and forgot.
A good album, I liked If They Move Kill 'Em., Motorhead and Long Life the best.
Nice and quite mellow album. Really liked the 60s psychedelic tones throughout. Prefer screamadelica though.
Oooh, look at us, how random and unusual we are! Try-hardedness aside, some of the songs are pretty drecent, just missing that something intangible.. .
Touched by PS greatness but not their best.
It was okay.
Uhh... interesting, to be sure. Really sounds quite dated, it has that late 90s "rad video game music" vibe throughout, to the point where I think this can hardly be described as an "electronic rock" record. That said, I can see the direction they were going with it, and I don't absolutely hate it as I have some other projects here. If you don't dig that aimless electronica vibe (imagine driving around in a shitbox car, smoking with the windows up, probably high on speed) you probably won't "get it," man. Tracks: "Kowalski", "Medication"
Kowalski
With all respect, this album just feels like a bit of a mess to be honest. It's so eclectic - there's straightforward rock, leftover bits from the Screamadelica era and some very heavy stuff - that it just becomes a bit impenetrable. It's not bad as such, but coming quite hard on the heels of their masterpiece in The Project, it's definitely disappointing.
Good
3.5 Enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. Great vibes all round.
It was alright, slightly elevated background music
Bien, pero muuuuuuuuuuy largo y pesado.
Day99 - i really liked medication it sounds like an oasis song
there are a couple songs on this that really remind me of that little dog in animal crossing that would passionately play the guitar for you if you asked.
I actually got this album previously, but it got lost in the shuffle as I transitioned over to the group listening arrangement, so it's here again (but would have been anyway, I suppose). As I noted the last time around, it feels like a somewhat forgettable collection of semi-lush semi-trip-rock-like songs (with a little light-industrial thrown in). It's also likely an album that was probably a lot more enjoyable when it came out than listening to it over 25 years later, but I do sort of wonder why this particular Primal Scream album made it into the collection, as they were more of a distinctive new sound in the early 90s (with their second album "Screamadelica"), but since I always ding this collection for so many early/debut albums, maybe I shouldn't complain. I'll say this, though: it kind of makes me want to find and watch the 1971 "Vanishing Point", and I also imagine that this album makes for a better soundtrack to that movie than the original. (But "Kowalski" has got to be one of the worst music videos I've seen, so maybe not....)
Enjoyable. One or two skips.
I liked this more than I thought I would, but it wasn't great. Some decent bits, but nothing that demanded my attention. Very much in the background.
What the hell is this? Fun in stereo but I really need more time with this to decide if I really like it or if I understand it even.
meh.. i have slowly lost interest in this kind of downtempo electro-rock stuff. feels very repetitive and boring. maybe it's just not for me.. i can see the merit in it, but i fail to feel any kind of interest in the music. only really liked one song that went a much more rock-heavy route, which i think is what i'd rather see from this sort of band. the late nineties were ummmm.... 5.5/10, fav tracks: medication
Not my style of music but enjoyed
A soup of sounds and vibes. Quite enjoyable. Likely will return to a couole of these for the mood. Some real cheesy moments, but such is the risk of being experimental.
Good album enjoyed it, but not in the same league as screamadlica
No es mi favorito de Primal scream. Irregular dico.
Alright, kinda eclectic, not really sure what to feel about this, don't think I'd go out of my way to listen again but I didn't dislike it
Lol. Psychedelics. 7/10
Not sure about this one. i didn’t dislike it but also nothing stood out. Might be good for listening while working
Good
Egentlig ret fint som baggrunds lyd tapet. Jeg fik mindelser til soundtracket fra Disco Elysium, elevator musik. Så lidt til en hver situation.
Definitely has its moments, but the instrumental portions and the failed experiment “Stuka” keep this from being a great record.
It was okay. I liked the psychedelic instrumental parts. Not as much the vocals.
Well I thought I would absolutely hate this, but it wasn’t terrible. There were no signs of greatness but it didn’t make me angry which a lot of 90s alternative shit can do.
I don't get a sense that the band thinks about an album as a whole but rather produces the songs they want and then brings them together. There are bits and pieces that work well, but they don't really hit the sweet spot for me for any of their songs. They bring together a good bit of different sounds but they really seem to need someone like Brian Eno who really knows how to take an ok song and make it better. "If they move, kill 'em" has a good groove, but doesn't seem to know where to go or what to do and just fractures pointlessly. Overall, ok music and I like it generally.
It really feels like this album is trying to be different and weird at some points, but not necessarily in a good way. It was okay, I liked some of the songs.
Interesting album. I'll have to give it a closer listen sometime.
Inconsistant, I guess? I do like this kind of music but it's hard to describe whether I liked it or not. Some songs are really good, but at the same time half of them feel unnecessary - the album is too long. Maybe if they cut it down by at least 20% it would feel more cohesive. Anyway, good release, don't get me wrong, it was fun to listen to for the most part.
En fond ça passe bien. Pas sûre que j'écouterai juste pour écouter.
Suurimmaksi osaksi instrumentaalista ja pari rock kappaletta. Rikosten valmistelu musiikkia elokuvissa. Parhaat: Get Duffy, Trainspotting
💖 trainspotting 🗣️ 6️⃣
Great intro, love the guitars and the strange sound effects. Not a fan of the grungy, 90s type sound anymore. I like the harmonica in Star. Great lyrics and message. Obvious inspiration from Boris Gardiner. Liked Medication, catchy hook.
interesting weird music, I like it! 3 stars
Pleasantly surprised with this one. Liked the music style, his voice, and the guitar. Appreciated there was no screaming despite the name.
an interesting album. interesting in that there isn't much continuity in sound from track to track-which isn't necessarily a bad thing. not really my style overall, but did appreciate the variety of sounds, use of different instruments. solid 2.5 but bumping to 3 because of variety
okay, würs aber glaub nid nomal lose
Interesting sound in here but I cannot see why its on this list.
Meh
Dit zou echt top zijn voor een ps2 videogimma, maar het is een pici te boring voor een gehele listen.
Not awful, but a little too much electronica sounding to me. The songs were repetitive to the point that I couldn't tell when one ended and another began. Still, some interesting sounds, including some nice jazz influences - just not my cup of tea.
Okay.
Bang average. Quite reminiscent of the general 90s sound.
Up and down
Cool sounds and concepts but lacking song writing to make it stick.
Rock, avant-garde, psychedelic, alternative, britpop, soundscapes, noise, male, mid, rhythms, dub, jams, repetitive melodies, dark, a lot of samples, soundtrack. Wyld... needs definitely several spins to get it. Would be fun to see this live.
Whilst its admirable for a band to reshape and update its sound to avoid feeling stale, the switch to a Barry Adamson/ David Holmes style soundtrack moods is not particularly successful; and when Gillespie lets rip on safer ground with Medication, sounding like the Stones (which they always kind of did), you miss the guitar heavy, foot stomping sounds and want to play something else of theirs.
Meh didn't care for this one too much. Didn't hate it though.
It's a vibe? A mood? Not at all what I expected.
A bit all over the place. Somewhat unfocused and uneven. There are good bits in here and I may give it another try down the road. Transpotting is a highlight. Prefer the instrumentals over the vocals. Fine but short of outstanding.
first few tracks are giving video game music...high adrenaline, GTA, running through a city and doing crime. I listened while buying cushions from Ikea, which upped the ante considerably. And then, a tone shift.... 🌟 "Every brother is a star, Every sister is a star" 🌟 And then back to some alternative sounds. It's v. hard to pinpoint the genre, and maybe that's just what the doctor ordered! Very versatile, dreamy soundscape. I listened while doing other things, and it was mostly pleasant.
interesting album, didnt make it all the way through
Super creative, but not my preference.
2000s esthetic is funny
Just wasn't super interesting to me. Will give it a further listen later.
Very Primal Scream in sound. Not hugely interesting or compelling - very easy to lose track of. But nonetheless a relatively enjoyable listen. Low 3.
Fun album. Totally 90s. Not what I expected based on the description. Plan to definitely check out more from this band.
This is interesting stuff. Had not heard of the band and had not heard any of their music before. Quite a cool mashup of styles and genres. It's really good. Now that I've read the Wikipedia article on this album and learned the album was inspired by a 1971 film called 'Vanishing Point', I read about that, too, and now I have to see it. Side Note: I couldn't help but laugh out loud a bit when I read that the band described the album as an anarcho-syndicalist speedfreak road-movie record. I can't hear or read the term "anarcho-syndicalist" without immediately conjuring up the image of the scene from 'Monty Python And The Holy Grail' when King Arthur converses with two peasants: King Arthur : Then who is your lord? Woman : We don't have a lord. Dennis : I told you, we're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to be a sort of executive officer for the week... King Arthur : Yes... Dennis : ...but all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified at a special bi-weekly meeting... King Arthur : Yes I see... Dennis : ...by a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs... King Arthur : Be quiet! Dennis : ...but by a two-thirds majority in the case of... King Arthur : Be quiet! I order you to be quiet! Woman : Order, eh? Who does he think he is?
I found it interesting. It's fine work background music. I've loved the Trainspotting soundtrack since the movie originally came out, and it's amusing to hear the larger context of Primal Scream's output. All that aside, I'm not likely to seek this one out again, but it was a solid entry nonetheless.
There was no screaming and their sound was not primal - but I really enjoyed this.
Never judge a band by its name. I was pleasantly surprised. I put this on my revisit list.
Interesting, can see it was an influential album
It's got a nice vibe, especially in the background. But, not only does it compare unfavorably to the funny face picture album, but it is too bloated for its own good.
Not as good as the other record, and a wee bit bloated.
Primal Scream hold the dubious record of being the band who’ve appeared at the most festivals I’ve attended without me seeing them once. I wouldn’t say I’ve actively snubbed them, there have just been better bands to see, or better things to do. And that kind of sums up my attitude to them on record, too. That said, I prefer the darker, more experimental, more electronic nature of this album to their baggy, ravey stuff, even if there are too many instrumental jams to make it a must-hear. 2.5/3
Genre: Electronic rock, dub, neo-psychedelia, krautrock I've heard this album a few times. It has been a long journey for me to start liking it. Now, after a year or so, I can finally say that I like it... I'd like to hear more of it and I think it will start to mean something to me someday... Standouts: Kowalski, Star, Burning Wheel, Medication 3.5
Yeah, alright
better than i expected. a few tracks had very nice grooves.
Was not expecting to like this as much as I did….though this album MUST be even better under some substances.
1. "Burning Wheel" So far, so Kula Shaker 2. "Get Duffy" Ok ambience. 3. "Kowalski" Interesting sample based ambient track. Nice. Bit Beastie Boys. Fave track on the album. 4. "Star" Nope. Just this side of cringe. I know some Brothers and Sisters who postively are not stars. That's the problem with singing unconditional love - it's useful, it's a great tool, but I've bought so much of over the years and it leads to being a doormat, which is not cool. 5. "If They Move, Kill 'Em" Meh. 6. "Out of the Void" I'm clearly not in the right mood / on the right substances for this album. 7. "Stuka" skipped. 8. "Medication" skipped. 9. "Motörhead" NIN 10. "Trainspotting" AIR 11. "Long Life" Nope.
Like when a bad toilet smell yields before the next visitors judgement
good but forgettable imo
D’Oasis à Radiohead en passant par la cithare des disciples de la fièvre du yoga et de l’Inde pilotée par Madonna, un panorama des années 1990. Adéquat.
I kind of like Primal Scream? Musically more creative than the name would imply but some super cringe lyrics. Star stands out in this regard.
This album really felt like it might be 4 stars at the start, but it just didn't have a consistent feel. There are some great tracks in the first half. Also, I know I said this on the other album, but a band called primal scream should be contractually obligated to have one primal scream in each album. Favorite track was Get Duffy
I like the chilled vibes of this. There's some interesting instrumentation and soundscapes in it, and the overall atmosphere is pretty nice. 3.5 rounded down.
Some great songs mixed in with some pretty experimental stuff
Pretty dull - the second-best song sounds a bit like the second-worst on Kid A, which is not a good sign. They get their Scottish band bonus point (just) but would have scored poorly without that! Maybe if I remembered it from the time, I would like it more, but I was a bit young for it
I like the combo of rock and electronic. It anticipates a lot of indietronica of the last 20 years. Would listen to more of their music.
7 July 1997 Instrumental, disdain for the way the world works, political, growth journey? Electronic rock, dub, neo-psychedelia, krautrock Deserves 3.5 stars 7.5/10 listen again 23/11/23
Never listened to Primal Scream before. This fits perfectly as a soundtrack to a snowboard game like SSX. I peeked at the reviews and it doesn't seem to be well liked. I thought it was pretty good. It's background music but still nice to have playing.
This album was so much more chill than I was expecting, from an artist called Primal Scream. I think it had cool moments and I liked the instrumentals but nothing stood out to me as exceptional. Good listen.
2/3
Joo! Menee kyllä kuunteluun pidemmäksikin aikaa. Tää on niinku rokkibändi joka tykittelee ihan muita kun rokkijuttuja. Hyvä. Kieltämättä myös hieman soundtrackin omainen tuotos. 3/5
Hyvä levy, vaikka jääkin vähän CAN-tribuutiksi. Ironisesti paras biisi on se, jossa samplataan CANiä (Kowalski). Screamadelica on muistaakseni vielä parempi levy, varmaan tulee vielä.
Not at all what I expected this band to sound like and was surprised that I didn't hate it.
7/10 Highlights: Burning Wheel (Know Your Rights)
Before listening to Screamadelica (c.100 albums ago), I'd assumed they were a metal band because of the name. Came into this album having forgotten that lesson, so was pleasantly surprised to get some psychedelica. This has its moments, but the second half of the album is quite forgettable. Almost drags it down to a 2, but the first five tracks keep it at a 3/5.
Not bad. I like the overall sound of it but it’s also sort of.. forgettable?
Sounds like a soundtrack to a 90s thriller sci fi movie. 2.5 stars
lite zzz
Not bad. Pretty average. Maybe 3.5
I liked this better than Screamadelica. Sort of a Massive Attack vibe on some of the tracks (Kowalski). I guess I'll give it a 3, though I don't really understand why this is essential listening for 1997... It definitely sounds like an album FROM 1997, but is that enough?
Almost 4, as it has some interesting sounds for sure. But too often lost interest
I didn't hate this album, some low points, but overall I liked it.
Interesting. Very 90’s. I’ll listen to it again.
The album is Alternative Dance or Neo-Psychedelia. Trainspotting, Long Life and Kowalski are good tracks. Most of the others have a groove.
Average album, nothing interesting in particular, I tried to pay attention, but overall really underwhelming.
3,5
I really liked some of it, but it was mostly too noisy
много звуков, не откликнулось
This is weird but I liked it. A lot calmer and chilled than I expected off the name and genre, would have made a good soundtrack to Vanishing Point.
I found this to be way better than Screamadelica, so a pleasant surprise indeed! Still meanders a bit through the long runtime though.
Part dystopian noir, part psychedelic acid trip, part britpop. Vanishing Points is definitely more interesting than Screamadelica, but having listened to both of those albums now I’m convinced Primal Scream had absolutely no clue what band they wanted to be. It’s all over the place.
Interesting listen. Definitely a right place, right time thing
I've never heard this album before and it rips! I love how psychedelic it is but still has that heavy krautrock thing going on. Particularly the bass was really cool, a lot of it was hypnotic in how repetitive but driving it was.
Meh
There were moments on this I really enjoyed, and quite a few others which were a bit 1990s-naffpop. Kind of Stone Roses meets vague electro. I'd give it another listen for sure.
Kind of all over the place, but I enjoyed
I have listened to this album three times and I have the feeling I'm missing things. I'm not getting it. It probably deserves more listens to fully get it, but life's too short
This was a pretty fun time that I definitely would never have listened to otherwise
Damien Duff
Too many of these already.
A few good songs, the rest seem ok.... Standouts: Kowalski, Star 3/5
Partly good
Much more interesting then i expected. Burning Wheel starts with a more traditional alt rock sound, but afterwards there's a lot more driving groove and vibe-oriented segments/tracks. Get Duffy is pretty low key, but they ramp up with songs like Stuka and Motorheard (though I think the lower key ones are better). An interesting listen.
I wouldn't list this album in anything worthy of dying for, but I find the music nice and varied. Definitely Primal Scream, but also different to other Primal Scream material.
This album seemed a bit better and more cohesive than the previous primal scream album. This is a poorly named band as well. Really gives the impression that the music would be different. This album had good instrumentals and the songs felt like an earlier Spoon. Overall it was okay and had replay value. 6.0/10
Genres: Electronic rock, dub, neo-psychedelia, krautrock Formed: Glasgow, Scotland in 1982 Run time: 25 songs, 2 hr, 7 min (Extended Edition) The fifth studio album by Scottish rock band. Spotify: Least popular song: >18k Most popular song: almost 3.5M plays. The songs on the album are very eclectic. The contrast between the high energy rock of "Kowalski" and the following track "Star" (which is quite gentle) is disconcerting. I enjoyed the instrumental track 5, “If They Move Kill ‘Em”. It’s like Funk and Electronic had a baby and this was the result. The general theme of the album is our struggle through life. It looks at the darker side of our journey, examining mental illness, medication and internal conflict. It’s not all dark and some of the instrumentals are quite light in comparison. I like the mood of an album to be consistent, but this takes us on a roller-coaster journey through life; the ups and the down, the good and the bad. Listen Again?: Possibly My Rating: ***
Was not impressed for the first half, seemed to switch between ambient electronic music and fairly run if the mill rock songs. Grew on me as it went on, some of the songs reminded of me of lighter Smashing Pumpkins stuff, particularly the last song. Overall it was okay.
Indie rokk með dashi af psychadeliu. Nokkuð gott en engin sprengja.
Overwrought
Meh.
About the same as the other album we listened to from them. I did like the few songs that were more rock.
Another Primal Scream. You can just say there are aren't 1001 albums worth listening to. We don't have to keep up this charade. This isn't even that bad. We've had way worse. But there's still so much better out there. Beyonce, Ween, Breeders, De la Soul... but we have two Primal Scream albums? Come on.
Interesting, but a mixed bag to my ears. I like some of the instrumental stuff like \"Get Duffy,\" but not all of the instrumental stuff. Same goes for the tunes with vocals; \"Long Life\" is cool and laid back, \"Medication\" is the opposite of that, and while I don't hate either neither one sounds particularly original to me. Mostly I just have questions. Does this genre have a name? Does it need one? Is it cool to just names songs \"Motorhead\" and \"Trainspotting\" without neither one being as good as the things they're named after? I don't know. I'm on the fence and not moving.
3-4
This was a weird one. There were a good amount of things I did kinda like, such as all the trip-hop influences this seems to have on it, some tracks even reminded me of Massive Attack. But it also kinda felt very disjointed with how many different genres were on this album, and then a bit pretentious with songs like Star (those lyrics were horrid). A three sounds fair I guess.
Best prima, maar niet geweldig.
Versatile album, but none of the songs really stick
This was okay. Not the biggest fan of electronica / this style of music, but it was easy background listening.
"Vanishing Point" is the fifth studio album by Scottish rock band Primal Scream. The album inspiration was from the genres of dub, dance music and krautrock and the bands Can, Motörhead and The Stooges. I'd also toss "Twitch"-era Ministry too. It was the first album with Stone Roses' bassist Gary "Mani" Mounfield and had guest appearances from Augustus Pablo, Glen Matlock and The Memphis Horns. Lead Singer Bobby Gillespie described the album as an anarcho-syndicast speedfreak road-movie record. Woah! It was named after the 1971 film of the same name and reached #2 on the UK charts. "Burning Wheel" starts with water drips. Wind and high pitch noises. A beat kicks in as does a pyschedelic guitar. Krautrock and Can ✔️. Repetitive guitar and eerie noises. Hmmmm. A guy introduces radio hero Kowalski on the first single "Kowalski." Space sounds and rapping. The drum sample is from Can's "Hallelujah" and the bass line sample is from Funkadelic's "Get Off Your Ass." The intent was an alternate soundtrack to the "Vanishing Point" movie. It does sound like movie music. The second single was "Star" and we're kind of back to a more pop song. Gillespie is actually singing. There's a melodica and The Memphis Horns. A slow beat and a tambourine. A good song. Hey, hey, a wah-wah groovy guitar in the instrumental "If They Move, Kill 'Em." OK, we can check the Stooges with the wah-wah guitar. A dance beat and some very irritating high-pitched noises. The band covers Motörhead in the song"Motörhead." Gillespie sings through a Darth Vader mask in the first verse. Drum machine. Random noises. The vocal mix is really low. This cover is almost unrecognizable from the original. The band goes back to krautrock in "Trainspotting." Carribean and spy guitar. The beat and percussion are bossa nova-like. And, a kaleidoscope of random noises layered on top. This is interesting, trippy and creepy (at times). I'm not sure it works as a cohesive album with soundtrack songs, krautrock songs and standard rock/pop songs compiled together. Although, they were several years ahead of Radiohead's "Kid A" as some of these songs are also in the deconstructed, minimal melody area. I give the band an "A" for effort in originality. If you're already a Primal Scream or krautrock fan, they'll be songs you like here.
Just ok.
Another Primal Scream album... doesn't seem like they deserve 2 albums in the top 1,001, but maybe that's just me. I did enjoy some of the songs. Trainspotting was a good one! On the second playthrough, I did enjoy this album a lot more. It was OK. Very 90's. Solid 3.
Cool mix of music. Not sure which primal scream I liked more. This one is based off of a movie that seems to be very popular among musicians. I’ll have to watch it.
It didn’t horribly offend me, much to my surprise. But I don’t need to listen to these guys for the rest of my Long Life. I think we’ve gotten our fix. One thing I do admire about these guys is the focus on variety - sounds, instruments, song types. They like to change it up, which is cool. Motörhead is a sneaky little banger near the end of the record.
This is I think is on thegood side of eh, not what I was expecting at all and very all over the place but I think overall it's missing something
In which the author(s) wanted a Nine Inch Nails record but needed another UK band to feed their bias. 2.5/5.
Bass really stands out, hate the vocals.
Good,album. But top 1001 I’m not sure.
Decent variety, but not memorable
For a band called Primal Scream I was expecting a lot more, you know “screaming”. However this album was a lot different experience to that. I found this album to be a strange mix of electronic and prog rock, with a lot of very hard to pin down points and no songs really following a typical song structure. For example I found ‘Kowalski’ to be incredibly spaced out and forward thinking with its limited lyrics and emphasis on electronic noises whereas the following track ‘Star’ is a lot more subtle with some relaxed sung lyrics about fighting for rights for minority groups. Now although I like the spaces out sort of sound they’re going for I much prefer their more to the point songs such as ‘Medication’ that has a driving guitar riff but I can understand why there’s the variety as an album full of theses type of songs would eventually end up sounding fairly derivative. As much as I appreciate what this album is going for I found the beginning and ends a little bit of a let down compared to the core of the record which is what brings it down for me but I will be returning to this as I feel it’s one of those albums I will come to appreciate a lot more over time.
I'll call this the ambient industrial genre. The songs are off the beaten track which is good for the time when this was released.
