Love me love me, say that you love me. Other songs were kinda dreamy, lay singer has a nice voice. Not unlikely to revisit, but didn’t necessarily love.
Classic
Meh
Didn’t know much about Cardigans outside a couple hits, but they’re a fun, diverse and kinda weird band (Burning Down the House with Tom Jones?). Started on their catalog after this one, which is high otraise from me. Nina Persson’s voice is fetching.
Ok, I guess. Some decent/unexpected arrangements with horns and flute and whatnot, but I definitely could have died without hearing this. I got sick of the singer's baby voice quite quickly.
Altogether quite fun, although not a lot stood out . Have never been a massive fan of love fool but was pleasantly surprised by their other songs
ehh not my thing
Enjoyable but nothing really stood out to me
It was cute, perhaps a little too cute. I found her voice annoying at a point. Not bad, not great, very middle.
I wanted to like this, and I think a lot of Cardigans sounds good but apart from the big single this struggled a bit. Musically really interesting but not quite consistent.
Happy pop. “Lovefool” is a great song. Not sure the rest of the album rises to the same level.
Anyway. 2.5 ster, dus 3
A flashback. Love the hits, not so much the album.
Better than I had expected. Very fun
More interesting than I thought it’d be. I didn’t get then when I was young but now I see how they were making alt-pop. A good listen.
Fine. Nothing groundbreaking. Enjoyable enough. Good aesthetic. Strange that there are Sabbath references but they're not obtrusive.
It was a fine album. Realized I actually knew lovefool, the rest kinda feels samey. I do kinda like the baby voice singer vibes. But I’ll be honest man of the year by Lorde really overshadowed this record today.
I really enjoyed the hit from the album Lovefool. Otherwise there were a couple other really solid songs, but the vibe of the album as a whole just felt really strange and unsettling and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I think it’s good but I’m not sure.
Tale of two halves. First half of the album is pretty generic. Everything from "Lovefool" on was pretty cool
Its pretty ok. They have their one banger from the 90s but nothing else stood out or really pulled me in.
‘Lovefool’ is a catchy song, there’s the same tone but not as remarkable.
Overall, not a bad album but it definitely feels like it's not from the late 90s. I can imagine people enjoying jamming to this. I also hadn't really thought about who sings that "love me, love me, say that you love mee" song, which is also their most popular one. Overall, the album is pretty chill, nothing too exciting but also nothing too bad.
3.3.
First Band On The Moon makes the 1001 List because of the album title (and maybe throw one to the Swedes.) Familiar with Lovefool from late 90s radio, but couldn’t have told you the band. Must have been much more impactful in Europe. To me, this album is middle-of-the-road 90s pop carried by one song and the vocals. Comes in at (2.6*s) cute.
This album was obviously carried by the one big hit. But there's still a lot of cool stuff in here, so I wouldn't overlook this one. A solid listen. You're in the mood for that kind of alt sophisticated pop
This is decent. There's one hit on it. I'll go 3/5, but I'd say it's right-in-the-middle average.
Somehow in my mind I confused the cardigans and the cranberries. Therefore I went in thinking I was going to hear the distinctive sound and voice of the Cranberries, which I enjoy, and that tainted the first few songs. After an adjustment I ended up happily listening to the remainder of the album. It was good but nothing outstanding and even though it has been years since I heard the single i could only remember how overplayed it was which made me unable to fully enjoy it.
Pretty good, even outside the hits. I like her soft voice
tokfu music :D
The Iron Man cover is great. Not as a song I listen to regularly, but it's a fun play on the original. Lovefool is one of those minor hits that doesn't get radio play or cultural recognition, but it's also pretty good for what it is. The rest of the album is... more of that. A weird mix of bubblegum and serious that makes it a fascinating album, but is ultimately just a curiosity, unless it hits for you. It feels like they are courting a proto-Charli XCX fan base.
3/5
Greatly enjoyable in its own right. I definitely recognized lovefool but hadn't heard of this band otherwise. Inoffensive and has a nice softness throughout. I like the overly sweet vocals. Feels lavish. Iron man was unexpected though
Music is good, but not that into it. More diverse songs than I expected. The Ironman cover was oddly cool.
I enjoyed it, as silly as it is
can’t complain. some catchy stuff here and there
The sound is just so original. Not something I want to listen to regularly, but respect this for what it is.
Nina's vocals carry the band, and Lovefool carries the album. The rest is ok, but not great. Though the Iron Man cover is interesting.
Pretty nice.
Not a bad listen, wouldn’t rush back
It was ok but their comer of Iton Mam was badass.
Very unorthodox style to this album. I really did not connect with the first half at all, but the more mellow B side had some really interesting moments. Definitely was not expecting pretty up-front Sabbath influence on this album, but very appreciated. Wasnt in love with the whole thing, but is worth a listen. Top tracks: Step On Me, Lovefool, Iron Man
First Band on the Moon is the sonic equivalent of a Swedish smorgasbord—cool, eclectic, and deceptively sweet until the existential meatballs hit. With syrupy vocals from Nina Persson that sound like they were filtered through a snowflake, and melodies that dance like ABBA in a dark alley with a Velvet Underground record, the album lures you in with sugar-pop charm before delivering a sly slap of melancholy. It’s as if IKEA decided to start a band: everything fits together neatly, but there’s always one piece missing just to keep you awake at night. A quirky, catchy, and cunning slice of Swedish pop alchemy.
Lovefool is one of the best pop songs of the 90s and I enjoyed the cheeky Iron Man cover.
Nothing of particular note in this album. Its fine. Iron Man cover I imagine was novel at the time but doesn't land in this age of a million "what if *insert song* was sung in *insert different genre*". Underwhelming ultimately.
3.5
Why are there albums on here that should just be a single? The single on this is produced differently than the rest of the album. Why? Just make an album that sounds like the single and you might have more than one hit? That being said that one song is fucking killer. Plus the iron man cover is pretty hilarious. Rest of the album just gets whiney about 2 songs in.
Didn‘t impress me much, wonder why it‘s on the list. Quite mediocre indie pop rock.
I think that it’s fun. Lovefool is a classic great song. It’s odd how much this sounds like music from the OC
Mellow, great drums and vocals - enjoyable but nothing stands out.
I really like the Cardigans last two albums - Long Gone before Daylight and Super Extra Gravity - which are darker/ slower and more country infused and both definite 5/5 for me. I really like Nina's solo work also - especially the first A Camp album. I struggle a little with the earlier popper/kitscher albums and find them grating compared to the later albums. Do like Been It and the Iron Man cover (appear to be in minority for this) but sadly Love Fool is so over played now that I skipped it.
Very chill, clearly wildly influentual for contemporary sweet pop music
esch ez gsi. has tbh nor einisch glost und crazy ufmerksam. müessts vlt nomol lose aber grundsätzlich no easi tötn und so chli good vibes mässig
Pretty solid.
vaguely interesting, feels a bit weird-quirky-style over substance the lunar vibe comes through on the iron man cover in particular
Was ok. Interesting enough to balance out the pop leanings. 3.3 stars.
<3
3.75 great album. Ironman cover is a treat
mid album, but lovefool is a generational banger
Favorite Track: Iron Man
Solid stuff, chill vibes a bit slow at times mes but lovefool is a great song
Lovefool banger generazionale
3+
-love me loveme say that you love me…. -this is a very nice collection of songs.. her voice reminds me of a lot of other 90s indie / trip hop artists I like. some bangers on here including of course Lovefool -there would have been a time when I’d give this a four-star rating, though some tracks fell flat. healthy 3.5 -Favorites are Happy Meal II, Lovefool, and Iron Man
Heard a different Cardigans album before in full (and of course I know Lovefool). What a coincidence, I was thinking about Nina Persson yesterday. The album is really lovely. The Iron Man cover took me by surprise, quite unexpected. 3/5
The songs improved toward the end of the album. But the more pop-oriented songs were of no interest to me.
Pretty good, almost feels unique, like a chill but poppy and groovy light rock sound or something. Lovefools a classic of course
I found this a little bit boring. Pleasant but boring.
Gear: ZMF Bokeh Artwork: 📸🥁🤘 Production: 🧏♂️📏💩 Music: 🧼👩🎤😯🤖 Rating: 🌕🌕(🌕)/5
Sabrosón y con el exitazo de Lovefool, pero tampoco me pareció tan memorable.
There was some good stuff here. The cover of Iron Man was interesting. A lot was pretty forgettable. Lovefool is a great song.
Not bad, not great.
They weren’t the first band on the moon. That was Houmous & Chutney in 1968 - we were actually sent up to firstly test the landing craft for Buzz and Neil and also to test whether anyone could actually hear music in space. NASA never shared the results. 3.2
was nice in a nostalgic mid 90s sort of way but ultimately this was characterised by lovefool. Without that song it would be nice but unremarkable
Maybe the only song I heard more than "Lovefool" on the radio in 1996 was "The Macarena." Lovefool was one of those songs that I initially liked but ended up hating with a passion because there was just no way to get away from it. I think I largely wrote the band off because of that. Over the years I've come to appreciate The Cardigans a bit more — I thought their cover of "Iron Man" (which is featured on this album) was cool, and their appearance on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver a few years back was rather endearing. But I never sat down to listen to any of their albums in full until now. This album is hard to describe other than it's very 90s. It's a weird mix of 70s-style soft rock (complete with schmalzy flute solos), experimental art pop, and Sheryl Crow soft rock. And I'm not sure I really enjoyed it. Maybe repeated listens are required, but nothing really grabbed me on the first play through. It's good enough background music, but not something I'd go out of my way to listen to. The singles (Lovefool and Iron Man) are definitely the best songs on the album. I can see this being a hit with fans of Air and even Beck. For me it was just ok. 3/5
Fine but the hits really annoying
Pretty unique stuff. The vocalist is very good, but a little too cutsie poopsie for my taste. The more upbeat songs break it up nicely. The music is clever and quirky at times.
I've never consciously heard "The Cardigans" so approached this with no expectations other than what I might expect from a late 90s recording. I got something that sounded like it was from several decades earlier. There's a distinct 50s style to the vocal presentation. An interesting selection. With some good arrangements. Can someone please take the drummer's cymbals away? Too much and too prominent in the mix. I failed to be grabbed by anything on here but it was pleasant enough. That gets it a middling 3/5.
there are certainly worse albums on the list. extra points for the iron man cover. i appreciate when artists can take a song from another genre and make it sound like their own. i dont think i ever want to hear it again but A+ for effort.
There were bits of this that were good but overall it was a bit meh - I didn't love the vocals and the Iron Man cover wasn't it.
Ufff, "Romeo + Juliet" is such an iconic film with such an iconic song "Lovefool". The album itself was very okay.
Pretty good.
Good Pop/Rock album...Nice cover Iron Man!
Didn't realize they sang Lovefool. Overall the album wasn't too bad. A few songs stood out.
Lead singer so hot
can get with this cover of iron man tho. could i write poetry to this? y
You'd think I would love this album, but it doesn't really do much for me. Lovefool does most of the work towards this album scoring a 3.
3- Stars (7/15)
Had higher hopes for this. Lovefool is obviously a certified hood classic but the rest was kinda meh.
ehhh
Okie dokie pop. Wouldn't have guessed from just hearing Lovefool that they were from Sweden, so that's neat. 3/5
This is better than my 3 stars may indicate. Its a “3.49 out of 5” but I just can’t being myself to round up. Why? The sugary vocal presentation guarantees I won’t return to it… BUT, arguing against myself, you need to know this is some fine, energetic pop and that sweet voice masks some darker themes and interesting musical influences. The most intriguing don’t-wanna-miss-it moment is their ironic and groovy cover of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man.”
очень милая и нежная музыка. на любителя.
This was definitely better than I expected. More interesting instrumentally for sure. I wish there was a broader number take range because this deserves more than a 3 but not on a 5 star scale.
Warm and easy, with a bite behind the sweetness. Few pull off the cutesy girl voice as successfully as Nina Persson.
“Lovefool” is on here, plus a pretty neat cover of “Iron Man!”
A perfectly pleasant album. I do feel however there are much better Cardigans albums than this, albeit its status propelled forward by the commercial success of Lovefool
Well-performed light pop. Really enjoyed a listen of this but on repeats it didn’t stick with me much apart from Lovefool which is probably going to get way more plays now that I can finally put a name to a song I’ve heard on and off since I was a kid. Highlights: Never Recover, Step On Me, Lovefool, Great Divide
Quite enjoyable album that's easy to listen to, but not bucket-list worthy.
Bit meh, very 90s, sickly sweet
2.8 1x catchup 10/21 - not as bad as i expected
Nice way listening rock from the mid 90’s. I really like Lovefool (reminds me of my teenage years), but some of the other tracks were a bit forgettable.
Fun. Not bad for a girl
I like this! Good stuff - LOVE ME LOVE ME SAY THAT YOU LOVE ME
3,5
Funka greit nok
I love her voice
Lovefool and Been It are the standout tracks here, but this is some great laid-back pop tinged with regret and sadness. Very nice and easy to listen to.
Bekanntester Song: Lovefool Typisch 90s, Themen: Liebe
I have this one and I remember being a bit disappointed when I first listened to it. I was expecting rock, so the style was quite unexpected, but it's not a bad listen at all. It has some lovely melodies.
FLUTE SOLOOOOOOOOOO. Yes, Lovefool is great, but album is otherwise fine. This reminded me of Komeda, a different band from Sweden that I was into way back when. It’s been a while since I listened to Komeda, but I’m a bigger fan of Komeda than The Cardigans.
Is it summer in in the mid 90s, are you in the park with an alcopop? No, well you'll soon feel like you are. Pop indie easy to listen to songs all the way through. Would I listen again? Maybe, however it's definitely a sunny day kinda album, BBQ with mates vibes. Not unfortunately a driving through the hammering rainy Welsh hills vibe that we had going on at the time!
This album is straight up pop music. It has both a very well known song that aside from it being well known seems unremarkable and a cover of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man." This album is short and sweet, but seems inessential.
Ok...nothing special.
Quite interesting
idk....! not bad not amazing
With the monotonous singing and music, it's hard not to fall asleep.
The cover if Iron Man was a welcome surprise. I also did not know who sang Lovefool until now.
2.5 They really couldn't find a graphic designer, huh?
Good album. Some good songs that I hadnt heard before.
I really like the cardigans and lovefool is an amazing track everyone should hear. The rest of the album is not what I’d call essential though.
I hadn't heard of the Cardigans, but was familiar with "Lovefool". Overall a really fun pop rock album.
Solid record with a unique vocalist who continues to draw tour attention throughout
Actually not so bad. Lovefool is well known of course, daring cover of Ozzy also on this album!
Swedish Pop!
The mix really hurts this album for me
This was so easy to go through that i feel like I’ll give it another go at another time. Also the Iron Man cover was so unexpected but pretty sick
Even though I always loved the song Lovefool, I never dug any deeper into the tunes of The Cardigans. I can mostly see why, nothing really remarkable but the singer has a good voice that translates to other songs. Sexy Iron Man was interesting
Only knew Lovefool going in, but was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this. Really interesting use of minor chords and interesting arrangements
Not bad! Beyond “Lovefool”, there were some solid catchy songs, and the overall sound is something comparable to Belle and Sebastians mid-2000s work, so somewhat innovative for the mid-90s!
very 90s
The first 4 songs are very good but it fades slowly after that. Very happy to have listened to this. Sounds like it could have been released today. Would go 3.5.
I didn't really know much beyond the singles of this band. This is a perfectly fine album, so creative ideas in there. But without multiple repeated listens (which won't happen) I can't see this having much staying power
This album was pretty solid. Fairly distinct tunes with a great singer and a unique sound. Lovefool is a classic and I liked Your New Cuckoo as an opener. 3/5.
Did not listen
I knew nothing about this band or it's music but had unknowingly heard one of the songs before. The vocalist sounded soft and girly throughout and reminded me of another singer or two that I can't recall just now. It was different and a pleasant listen that I'd probably neither seek out or reject in any way.
Other than the popular “Love Fool” not much caught my attention
I'm not sure what to do with this. I think it's clearly well done but I can't explain how. I enjoyed the listen enough but don't think I'd ever put in the effort to come back. If it was on I can't imagine I'd put in the effort to turn it off. Likely a day thing more than anything for me.
This is a very 50/50 album. Some songs I enjoyed, like Lovefool and Step On Me. Others, such as the awful cover of Iron Man, were just not good. I do enjoy the vocals and some of the instrumentals, when they seem to put thought into them anyway.
This was fine. Beyond Loverfool I’m not sure there’s anything else all that interesting on here.
Chill easy-to-listen-to pop album. Nice to know there’s more to The Cardigans than that one song.
This is fine. Poppy. Swedish. Pleasant vocals. There is way worse music than this and so I’m inclined to give it a pass for being pretty insubstantial. Doesn’t do much for me, but it ain’t hurting nothing.
90's pop. I didn't really know this band though I knew the song "Lovefool". Solid musicianship elevates this record over the vast majority of the genre, but it's still a little too cotton candy for me to really enjoy. Lovefool, unsurprisingly, is the best song on the record and I don't see myself listening to the other ones again.
Decent - lovefool a classic
some good tunes but not memorable
i really liked it, i think this is a great album for a road trip
This sounds like "Happy Birthday" Marilyn Monroe fronting a made for TV ABBA with a little 90s alternative angst thrown in for good measure. Which means I don't necessarily HATE it, but I don't need to listen to it again.
Pleasant and inoffensive. Not a favourite.
Not bad - 3.5 overall. A couple of deserved hits, one odd but interesting cover
That one song is pretty killer huh
Better than I expected based on their 90s hit.
From knowing this band only from their biggest hit, this was far more listenable than I expected. Not the greatest, but “Been It”, “Never Recover”, and “Your New Cuckoo” were all pretty catchy.
Enjoyed rehearing a few of these songs and discovering others.
Interesting and exploratory. I think LoveFool is the best on the album and some of their other albums are better, but I still thought this wasn't bad. Singing register *almost* right, but still not danceable.
Ok...nothing special.
-catchy melodies -the singer gives me vibes of a joyful version of Beth Gibbons (of Portishead) -this can have some dark lyrics and mask them with their catchy melodies -it can get orchestral at times -dont know if I would spin this often, but it sure has some bangers -favourite songs: Your New Cuckoo, Never Recover, Step On Me, Lovefool, Choke -least favourite song: Heartbreaker
Having only known the singles the expansion to an album was refreshing. String solid pop music.
I really expected more out of this. Their one big hit just gets stuck in my head and not in a good way. I just hear No Doubt, and I would rather listen to No Doubt…and that’s not saying much.
Bubblegum alt pop for Gen X-ers
Like so many other indie albums of the '90s and '00s, it's fine. Enjoyable enough, but nothing to really catch my attention.
довольно однообразно и недостаточно музыкально драматично. но они хорошие, надо всё послушать
Alright. This is good. I think this is a pretty fun album. It definitely feels Scandinavian. I can hear similarities to artists like Björk and ABBA. This is a nice middle ground between the simpler, upbeat nature of the latter and the more experimental, occasionally melancholic nature of the former. I like the singing. Again, it definitely reminds me of Björk. The sound is very pleasant to listen to. It's cheery, but not mindless. The instrument work is quite good. The writing is also solid. I think the funniest thing about this album is that it has a cover of Iron Man by Black Sabbath. As soon as I started listening to the album, I knew that the Iron Man cover would be something special. It absolutely did not disappoint. I can't say I ever expected to hear a Black Sabbath cover in music that sounds like this, but I'm happy to have listened to it and this album before I die. High 3/5.
Dreamy. 3
Started quite enjoying this but second half really dropped the ball for me - sound got a bit thin and ditzy for me. Two and a half. Fave track: Been It
Lovefool
Good enough, knew 1 song
Sweet
Very easy listening 90s pop/rock. it got some hits and is listenable but nothing special to me personally. i got curious why they stopped and found out that the guitarist often works as a producer/song writer and often work with max martin which was interesting.
Could've sworn the cardigans were Welsh! This was ok, but I was kinda expecting to enjoy it more than I did. Lovefool was the only track I recognised and also the best one. I think their other singles are better. Fine, but can't see me being back
3.5
It made taking a trip to the dentist mildly more pleasant
This one was ok, lovefool is the obvious standout song from this.
good album, very niche in the 90s. Reminded me of Gwen Stefani.
Owned this on CD. But not sure I kept it when I had a clean out
Nice album, variety of sounds spanning from the 60s to 90s. ‘Lovefool’ the big hit here but other good ones here. 3.5/5
fínasta popp. 3,5.
quite good
Not bad
soft and sultry vocals. interesting instrumentations. this was a pretty fun alternative pop rock album. they even threw a curveball with a cover of black sabbath’s “iron man”. no issues with this one. highlights: “heartbreaker”, “lovefool”, “losers”
90’s pop that’s not too shabby.
“Lovefool” is the bright piece of Pop confection that you need to hear. There’s nothing else approaching that gem on this record. It’s a capable record but it stands more as a Time Capsule—enjoyable but it didn’t really move the needle forward.
This is some decent indie rock/pop. I had forgotten it was playing in the background though, so, I'm not sure it has the lasting power they wanted
First time listening to the whole album. Wasn't sure what to expect. More varied and interesting than I would have predicted, but still nothing that really elevated it beyond the high-quality middle-of-the-road.
Nice enough, good background music. The lyrics occasionally caught my attention. I thought this would stand out, from the intro to the first track, but ultimately it just didn't.
It’s not great, but iron man was so silly it brought it up a star
Embarrassed to say, I still just like the one song that was their "hit song."
Very solid pop album good vocals good songwriting good hits mid 7/10
The rest of the album has a very different tone than "Lovefool" 3/5
Pleasant (and clever) enough pop tunes, with “Lovefoot” and “Losers” standing out. Also notable for Black Sabbath references and(!) an utterly bizarre cover of Sabs’ “Iron Man”. Didn’t see that coming.
A fine listen, but not my favorite from this band. Highlights: Heartbreaker, Lovefool
Mucho más que Lovefool
It is an interesting style, takes a little while to appreciate and quite enjoyable. Lovefool is clearly the standout track but may be because of familiarity, The Iron man cover is unique!
Pleasant, but a little boring
I can’t believe this is an album from 1995. This is the first album I thought could’ve been released in the passed decade. However, this is far flung from the idea of modern day pop. It reminds me of a band called “Charly Bliss” from Brooklyn who are considered “bubblegum pop”. I can’t tell at all that they are from Sweden. I didn’t hate it, does that mean I liked it?
Better than I expected, liked the airy pop vibe and enjoyed hearing lovefool
Nice music but nothing massively interesting. Like the clothes, Cardigans would probably be more suited to my mum than me but I enjoyed it fine.
Good poppy jaunt. Idk how to explain this, but it feels like this album should be in sung in French. It's been a while where I have been blindsided by a song that I have heard a million times when Lovefool came on. Really solid poppy album. A strong 3, but not getting out of bed for this one.
pretty good, but not perfect.
Very good, but also very bland. I don't know what to think of this album.
Step On Me // Lovefool // Iron Man //
The Cardigans are one of my favorite bands, but "First Band on the Moon" is one of two albums of theirs I never listen to. Their last two albums are two of my favorite albums of all time, both 5 out of 5's, and Gran Turismo is a 4.5 or 5 from me, as well. Life is an easy 4 out of 5 and represents what I think is their best straight pop album. However, while "First Band on the Moon" has some good songs and good moments. Overall, it feels less substantial and like their "radio album" in the same way Nada Surf's or Radiohead's first albums feel that way. Even though "First Band" is not The Cardigans first album, it feels like a shift for them...before they realized they'd rather make darker and more mature material.
"Pull over! Pull over!" "No, it's a cardigan, but thanks for noticing." Not a bad listen. Some surprisingly jazzy moments throughout this album. Nina Persson's voice is pleasant. Has a very innocent sound to it. I was unaware that this was a Swedish band. I remember hearing a lot about this band when I was growing up... But they sort of just fell off the radar. I wonder what they are up to. Everyone knows Lovefool by the Cardigans. Even if you don't recognize the title, once that intro hits.... Instantly, you will get it. Actually paying attention to that song, it's pretty well written and the music in it is interesting. This song stands out from the rest, it's definitely the most popular and easily accessible song of the album. Out of nowhere, a cover of Black Sabbath's Iron Man? Honestly, might be one of my favourite covers of this song. Very soft, almost lounge... They made this song their own. The music is different. There is a different solo, even some scatting in it. Wow. Honestly, very cool. Despite some cool things in this album, and a really cool version of Iron Man, this album doesn't really resonate with me that much. It's not a bad album. If I could half rate it, I would give 2.5 stars... But it is closer to a 3. So I guess I will give it a 3.
Some really nice chill music! Probably won’t revisit too much as it wasn’t 100% my vibe. But still enjoyed it.
Not bad. 3 stars. Lovefool was definitely the highlight.
"Your New Cuckoo" and "Lovefool" are good songs of course. "Losers" is a cool song too. "Iron Man" is an interesting song lyrically, with different textures in the instrumental. There are lots of alternative instrumental elements throughout the album, but the somewhat dreamy atmosphere and delicate vocals get tiresome for me after a while, even with it being a short album.
It's very 90's poppy... Obviously Lovefool is a big hit. It's well recorded. Decently transitions. Been It's got a good groove to it... Probably 3.4 territory. Generally 4s are stuff that I'd regularly put on. I'm not sure this is something I'd play a lot. At least not as much these days... I used to be more into Apples in Stereo and that sugary stuff.
Lovefool is a banger
Good not great.
It’s a fun little album that comes with some great college memories for me. Peppy arrangements and clean instrumentation lend their way to an enjoyable experience.
Pop-rock. Un megahit. Ni fu ni fa.
I had only heard their two radio songs and already knew I liked the singer’s voice. But listening to the album gave me an appreciation for the musicianship of the rest of the band.
My thoughts can be summed up with 2 words, *very* 90s. I only knew the LoveFool song before hand (Romeo + Juliet soundtrack got a lot of repeat listens from me) 3
Decent album but nothing special
I feel like I crossed a Great Divide only to then have someone Step on Me. I may Never Recover. It was alright
Great!
we cannot hide the heavy metal love behind the pop purity
Pop vocals but not quite so pop instrumentals. It definitely works. I love that they have a flute. The song transitions really make the album feel cohesive and they are well done. I really appreciate an album with good song transitions. I really liked how Heartbreaker transitioned into a minor key darker outro. Gave the song an eerie feeling. With the current state of pop these days, this album hardly feels like "pop" music. It's pretty enjoyable and creative. This album reminds me a lot of the indie music being made right now. I was wondering how I had never heard of this band since I grew up listening to the radio all the time in the 90s and then Lovefool came on. Feels like one of their poppier songs on the album so it makes sense that this was the radio hit. Lovefool to Losers was quite the whiplash haha. I'm not really a super hero person so Iron Man was kid of silly to me. Album ended strong with choke.
Super fun. I like the whimsical ebbs and flows of the vocals and music. You can really tell the band is having fun. The horns, the synths. It feels like a non-superficial pop album. However, I do feel like Lovefool makes it feel like a one hit wonder kind of record.
This is a good album and I like The Cardigans now.
They remain a one hit wonder in my mind. Love me, love me. Or not.
90s indie pop that rehashes 60s-era pop with a Bacharach vibe. Pleasant, but essential? Hardly.
This is not a band I'm familiar with at all, but their Wikipedia page makes them sound really interesting. They're a ton of fun, great 90s pop rock. They did Lovefool ('Love me love me / say that you love me / fool me fool me / go on and fool me')! Includes a pretty 'meh' cover of Iron Man. Overall still really enjoyable. 3/5
I always liked The Cardigans’ singles but never explored any of their albums. This is definitely up my alley. I do think this is only included in the list because of “Lovefool.” The rest of the album wasn’t as good but I did like it. I’d maybe listen to it again and see if I like it even more. Somewhere between 3 and 4.
Descent sound couple of nice tunes. Worth a listen for the weird Iron Man cover alone.
Bien. Normal. Lovefool superconocida.
The Cardigans' "Lovefool" has a special place in my music-loving heart. This song was HUGE on the radio at around the time I discovered pop radio in my youth, and it played all the time. It didn't take me long to think that the song was incredibly unique among what was being played. Still today, I stand by that. The indie-ness of this album seems very ahead of its time in 1996. "Lovefool" is far and away the best song on the album and still stands out today, but the entire album is noteworthy and unique from track to track. This lands pretty close to a 3.5 for me!
i like the later works better
Un buen disco de rock-pop de los 90. Tiene un clásico en Lovefool, esa canción que estaba en todas partes incluso antes de aparecer en la banda sonora de Romeo + Julieta
This is a solid 3.
Pleasant childlike quality to many of the songs but there is dissonance also (best example is Heartbreaker). Hard to contextualize Lovefool since it's such a recognizable hit. Very well crafted though.
Sounds like having a cocktail on an arctic beach
This is a pleasant listen right up to the point her voice becomes grating. It's just too high for too long and that's enough for me. Gets a 3 because the songs are fun and nicely crafted.
I liked Step On Me more than Lovefool (which has been overplayed to death and then some). Rest of the album beyond those two is pleasant background music, nothing more and nothing less. The definition of a 3/5.
Dos canciones disfrutables. El resto de pasable a meh
Decent.
I love 90’s music but this is pretty middle of the road.
Meh, kind of bland. But I thought it was going to be worse considering the era and album cover.
Listened to this while playing Aeon's End with my partner against the Carapace Queen. We lost. This album was ok. There were a few songs that I definitely enjoyed, and one that I instantly recognize. Nothing groundbreaking in my book. But a decent enough album. I had somewhat high expectations after the lushness of the opening track, but this album would definitely land at a 2.75 if I could rate it as such.
it's ok. Good for a chill rainy day. I personally love the cover of Ironman.
This was fun! A good listen. Really liked Step On Me. Very dreamy sounding!
Ok album, Lovefool is a banger.
Im so quirky
Felt like it was ahead of its time, gave 2000s vibes. Cool but maybe would take a bit longer to get used to
An easy enough listen. I enjoyed the first half more than the second, as the vocals became a bit samey.
Okay pop
Catchy, worth the listen
Poppy summer music. One bona fide hit. There’s a certain lounge quality to it.
was okay. 1 famous song i knew. i hate the use of the recorder in ‘Choke’.
3.5/5
I will not speak
Really only liked the last half of the album. The single is a classic.
I’ve enjoyed this one a decent amount. She has cute, pleasing vocals and the writing supports her well. There is nothing to complain about with the instruments, they usually have a nice tone and are played well. The writing overall is pretty simple, but fits the style well and is quite catchy. I had heard the song lovefool, although I don’t think it was their version, it represents their style well, a very catchy tune with pleasing vocals and overall simple but good writing. Overall would listen to again.
3.5
More complex than I thought but underwhelming. Scandinavians are great at pop music but this has not aged well
J’aime beaucoup le single, mais la voix haute et les cuivres m’ont irritée à la longue
Highlights: "Been It," "Lovefool," "Never Recover," "Happy Meal" Respect to the Cardigans for leaning into basically everything that was not in fashion in the 90s: a blend of disco with bossa nova jazz and 50s pop. Does fall on its face in the last stretch, but mostly moves at an incredible pace, stopping its hooks on a dime and jumping right into the next one, with plenty of surprising twists on the way.
Iha jees!
Album 127 of 1001 The Cardigans - First Band On the Moon Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Choke Swedish group. Kind of like if the Carpenters went a different direction. It was an enjoyable album. Neither here nor there. There is a nice cover of Iron Man.
Confession: I had a bit of a crush on Nina Persson back in the day. So I've seen the Lovefool video a few times. As for the album, it's not bad. Hit and miss. Quirky fun but sometimes too quirky. That Iron Man cover is interesting.
Wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be Pleasantly surprised by the Iron Man cover too Favourite tracks: Your New Cuckoo, Been It, Step On Me, Losers, Iron Man
Didn't hate this. It really felt like the early to mid 90s.
The iron man cover was a nice surprise, and lovefool is a banger. Rest of it isn't really for me but it is good music
More interesting than I expected and who saw that Iron Man Cover coming!?
The Cardigans!!! I'm always down for some nostalgic 90s tunes. I don't think I've listened to this whole album. Just Lovefool. oooh cool flute at the end of that first track. I didn't know these guys were Swedish. I really love Nina Persson's voice. It's like tangerine honey. How was Lovefool such a great song!! It totally sticks out from all the other songs to this point. What a hit! Great Divide...nice lyrics. Well the whole album was only 39 min. I was good, but of all the songs Lovefool is the best. Don't think I would revisit any of the other songs. 3 stars.
Great 90s vibe, I'd give this a solid 3.5
I like the cardigans in general, know many of their singles. however don't think this is them at their best. sounds a bit like a local band performing at a pub. Mostly enjoyed but apart from the single didn't stand out.
Pop-rock. Un megahit. Ni fu ni fa.
Bien. Normal. Lovefool superconocida.
Quiet and loud background listen!
Swedish pop with dabblings of alt-rock. Not bad at all - though the vocals do get a bit cloying after a while. Though top marks for the cover of 'Iron Man'. Best Tracks: Your New Cuckoo; Step On Me; Love Fool
It was a pleasant listen. Definitely had more of a 70s vibe to it. The Iron Man rendition was amazing. I enjoyed her voice and I thought it fit the music well.
First Band On The Moon was a good listen to some pop/alt-rock from the mid 90s. Who couldn't forget that absolute banger Lovefool from the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack? That track was the most nostalgic and brought me right back. I can't recall any other track from the album from the time, or whether or not they had any other hits from any other albums, to me they were a one-hit wonder, with a decent album to back up the single's success. Best: Lovefool Worst: Never Recover
I only knew the Cardigans from the Love song, and I wouldn't say I enjoyed it. But this is overall a really good record. I liked a lot of it. May have to check out more.
If they were the first band on the moon, I'd understand any album of theirs being a must listen. Since they are not, and don't necessarily meet the 80-90s UK pop profile the writer(s) love, I guess Sweden is close enough. It's an okay album, I give them credit for remaking Iron Man in their sound - they were out punched by the song, but they tried. 3/5.
Better than I anticipated
Good. Not great beyond love me love me.
this is so much more than lovefool which i absolutely did not expect. full of true 90s bops and also some more subdued tracks which were really enjoyable. at its weakest when it retreads tropes or doesn't lean into its aesthetic. best tracks: been it, lovefool, step on me
Perfectly cromulent record, but no reason for it to be on this list.
I like the Cardigans! Catchy, inoffensive stuff.
Very nice listen. First time for this album and this artist, really good sound to the whole thing. Very solid album all around! Probably will check out others like this!
Good vocals, good music, and I like the chill vibe
This was a fun album. I really liked the Iron Man cover, very unique.
This album is a quick listen with some fun melodies. Lovefool is ALWAYS a jam.
3.5 Lovefool is a BANGER
Id never heard any of their songs other than the famous Lovefool, but it was quite good. I would call the album “cute” honestly- there wasn’t much uniqueness to it but I would listen again.
Wanted to give this a 4 going into it. Lovefool and Iron Man are excellent, but the rest fell just a little short.
Not bad....a little poppy, but not nauseatingly so....
This was surprisingly okay
Fine indie stuff. Nothing stood out but also inoffensive.
Not really my bag but kinda dug it anyway.
-I get nothing from the album cover but that they are a band with a drummer -early impression is that this aged super well, they sound more like contemporaries of CHVRCHES and Alvvays than I'd expect from a '96 album -spoke too soon, "Never Recover" & "Step on Me" are unabashedly mid-90s (not a complaint) -then there's "Lovefool", which is both super 90s but also foreshadows the disco boom in newer pop (e.g. "Say So" by Doja Cat) -someone, somewhere, a classic metal fan is surely upset by the Cardigans' inclusion of Black Sabbath- & another is fist punching the air 3.5 HL: "Heartbreaker", "Been It", "Lovefool" also March 13, 2023
Really understand why this is liked. I don't. Just not doing a lot for me.
Tää on must varsin mukiin menevä poprock levy! Tätä ja Gran turismoa on tullut kuunneltua joskus silloin kun kirjaston kaikki levyt lainattiin kerralla. 3/5
Tykkään ja tuntuu, että voisin tyylin puolesta tykätä vielä paljon enemmänkin. Ei silti lähde ihan odotetulla tavalla lentoon.
