Reviews (page 5 of 7)
I guess it wasn't too back, it had some good beats and I was bopping along at times but it went way too hard on the whole Doctor thing.
I have this CD in my collection and it's just as strange as it is fun. There are some dull moments throughout, but it's balanced out by the more... interesting moments.
Mostly enjoyable
I have to imagine this was originally a script submitted to Troma Studios. Cool sound, love to see prior work for Gorillaz and Deltron 3000.
If this list has one criticism, it's at times too tasteful. Not something that can be levelled at this completely-new-to-me slice of 90s hip-hop. It is absolutely mental, chiefly based around an alter ego who is an alien sex-obsessed gynacologist from Saturn, the eponymous Doctor. The beats are fantastic, sparse, melodic and spooky in an early Wu-Tang way. The rhymes are ridiculously misogynistic, pornographic (one track appears to be a sampled soundtrack to a porn film) but so lurid and OTT it's difficult to be outraged. Is it any good? I don't know, but glad it's on the list and three stars.
This is the style of hip hop I like best, runs a little long though. You know I like em 40-50 minutes
3.9 - This is a lot of goofy fun. Lots of medical imagery and nonsense scientific language. The flow is a little inconsistent but among the funniest and most different hip hop I’ve listened to thus far.
I was a little disappointed in this one. I expected to like it more. It sounded like it would be fun but was just pretty plain.
I was missing some hip hop on the list since this album is the first in some days. It's not the best on lyrics (I like the themes, but here I feel it is a bit exaggerated), but it is very well produced. I liked to know a good release, but it's probably not remarkable enough to take me back to it soon.
Ňákej hip hop, ale dá se
Not totally my vibe but not bad, decent to work to in the background. Bear witness is decent
Very funky. The lyrics and themes are cringeworthy at times. But I'll be damned if you can't listen to this and not bob your head along.
It's a pity it went on forever.
It is a hip hop album. Overall it is pretty good. There were a couple of songs that were a little weird. I would probably listen to it again and I would check out other work by the artist.
Un album rap/elctro? Assez weird mais serieux ca secoute bien quand meme et c'est pas mauvais. Un peu long .3.25
Weird fun album
Pretty decent, good cadence
9th March 2022 Listened on the way in to and at the office. Went bowling in the evening. This surprised me given the album artwork. Liked it a lot, creative and dark imagery with a dash of humour.
3/5
Probably a generous 3 but it's an obvious influence on people like MF Doom, Dilla, Madlib etc who I really enjoy so for that I'll give then the benefit of the doubt. Loses a point for being too long and another for being too horny. Lucky it didn't lose a third for that Eart People nonsense.
Couple of good bits but generally not great
Call me the halfsharkalligatorhalfman A bit too gangster and sexual for me 3/5
Could see myself throwing this album on from time to time. Runs a little too long for my liking though.
Decent beats. Voice took a while to warm up to. Not really into the content too much though.
Okay, so I'll describe the most recent narrative that I discovered from LET'S GET EDGY CINEMA. It's about a mad scientist. An up-to-date theme, right? And he's a doctor. A gynecologist and a surgeon specifically. He specifies in intestine surgery, rectal rebuilding, relocated saliva glands, chimpanzee acne, and moose bumps. But that's not all. He's an extraterrestrial from Jupiter. And a time traveller as well. His phone number is 1-800-PP-51-DOODOO. And and he is also horny and homicidal. And at the top of that, he is named after a freaking polygon. At first, I thought that this is a pretentious narrative trying hard to be "scientific" or whatever. Throwing slick bass and technical words here and there. But it's (probably) not. I think it's a parody, a circle jerk for... medical or science fiction stuff? Awesome synth-y and scratchy sound effects. Love the horror-ish vibes. The lyrics seems comical most of the time, but the delivery is sometimes repetitive and weak. With a length of more than an hour, this little science fiction horror thing gets weary and boring after a while, whether it is a genuine attempt to make a horror sci fi narrative or a self parody doctor story.
Very weird, but fun.
Yeah not bad, good beats and scratching. Feel I missed the boat a bit on this one.
Brought to mind Bakhtin's theory of the grotesque body where social power is reclaimed through engagement with bodily functions. Case in point 'a visit to the gynecologist'
Great beats and good flow. Pretty trash lyrics though
I'm not going to act like I didn't enjoy some of this, because I did, but it sounds like somebody quickly explained what a concept album was to a 15-year-old, who then came back an hour and a half later with 65 minutes of content. Best track: Waiting List
Sadly this concept album project with Kool Keith has never been a hit for me. It's a perfectly fine hip hop concept album but it does suffer tremendously from it's run time which makes it feel far too meandering as a whole. None of the beats or production scream breaking boundaries though it is fun to hear Kool Keith embrace some of the more relaxed West coast style. It's never bad except for a few of the skits (what hip hop albums from this era don't have terrible skits tho right?), but also never reaches the heights other Kool Keith projects or concept albums of the era get to.
so unique
Dark, minor key, lazy beats. Lots of scratching and sampling. Fast rolling rapping, almost like a percussion instrument itself. Reminds me of The Ziggurat/ The Constructus Corporation, in that its a sci-fi themed concept hip-hop album. Some of the teenage humour is annoying.
1.5
This was hard work. Not my jam, got nothing from it.
Musically, not bad. The wordflow was impressive at times. Those things combined were not enough to overcome lyrics that were juvenile and scatalogic. Starting the album off with a porno clip set my stomach on edge, and with what followed, I never really recovered. Don't call the doctor, though.
2/5
I have heard of Ultramagnetic MCs but know very little about them and had never heard of this album. It's OK. Didn't really need to be listening to porn dialog at work today, but... Thinking that people need to hear this before they die strikes me as odd. The music is performed well but the lyrics are juvenile.
Some good tracks but too much nonsense, thinks he’s smarter than he is.
I like parts of this and really dislike other parts. I would say that the flows are all pretty good. And rhe beats are killer. Im just less into the juvenile alien gynecologist stuff. The content of the raps is just straight up bad. Im not a total prude or whatever. I like when its fun. I can take a middleschool level of writing as long as its silly and fun. This is mostly just gross and kinda creepy. I love when Eminem talks about idk killing Christina Aguilera or whatever. Its done so comedic that it works. When this sets up a skit where he fingers some innocent lady in the stirrups its just fucking weird. I could see some way to make it not gross but thats not what I got here. Its a shame cause I could see it being good if anything else is said in the same meter with thr same beats. Its just bad with all this crap hes saying. Humor is subjective and maybe im in the minority but I just cant get down with it. Still gets some points for production but im out on anything lyrical here.
Eh.
Too long and annoying.
This one was kinda fun. The lyrics and rap were fun, but some songs felt repetitive. I want to give it a 2.5, but enjoyed it more than expected.
I feel the DNA of this in other stuff I like but don’t really connect with this. The humor came off too creepy and while the beats and flow were solid it just didn’t do anything for me.
not terrible, but just not my thing.
Woof. This is not good. Well, I had a real streak going with the Beasties, Led Zep, and a few others. I'll give it a 2 because Kool Keith has influenced so many other - much, much better - artists.
So long, strange lyrics, not for me
Still not my genre.
A visit to the gyno is why this gets 2 stars. Disgusting.
Not really sure about this one. Wouldn't revisit.
Entirely unremarkable
Never let rappers do skits
Gracioso album, las canciones son lo mas random que existe, divertidas pero wtf.
Listen, I'm not against hip hop. It kind of seems like it because my last few reviews. I actually enjoy a lot of what I hear here. The rapping is quality and many of the beats are cool and mysterious. Dr. Octagon is a great example. Crazy track. I just don't get, many times, the way this hip hop artists build the albums themselves. I find them many time to be too long, not focused enough. It became a bit of a struggle towards the end there... I can't deny that there's passion and talent behind this project, but it's not for me. I look for a different experience when listening to an album. A flat 2
Falopa
Lamentable inclusión en esta lista.
I don't think this one is great, but I did like some of the production on display here, particularly at the end of "Blue Flowers." Favorite track: "Bear Witness"
I wanted to like this album more than I did, but I wasn’t a big fan. Very over the sexualised bizarre interludes which made me feel uncomfortable and it shadowed the potential of me actually enjoying this. If I have to skip a decent amount of the album then the overall listening experience is just not great. On the actual songs, I liked No Awareness, Earth People, Wild and Crazy, and Halfshark is pretty funny, but I don’t know if I’ll be coming back to them in a rush.
Its very different very interesting but not that bad
Loved the production, the lyrics not so much.
A bit cringe. Another example where instrumental versions would be an improvement.
It wasn't the worst, but any interest was diminished by the sexual comments that come off more sexist than anything sexy. I tend to chuckle at songs with allusions to sex (i.e. Sabrina Carpenter) and maybe it's because it's a man and commenting on "cock" can automatically come off as weird, but it's the same ick as a man being a gynecologist. Why exactly do you feel a need to do this?
I've never heard of him, or it. The rapping is okay but, as usual, it's overlong and plaqued with nonsense.
This is so random. I genuinely don't know whether I like it or not. I suppose the creativity is absolutely off the charts, but the surrounding topics of some of the songs are just a bit odd... The whole concept of 'Dr. Octagon' being an 'extraterrestrial gynaecologist' is just weird, and some of the dialogue throughout is disturbing, especially in the song 'A Visit To The Gynecologyst'. I did, however, find 'General Hospital' somewhat amusing, with the last line being 'Oh shit, there's a horse in the hospital!'. This line alone is what the first star in my rating is for. The backing tracks, however, were great throughout, and they may be the only reason that this is getting more than a 1-star rating... With that, here are some of the songs that stood out to me more than the others (this in no way means I enjoyed all of them): Earth People General Hospital A Visit To The Gynecologyst I'm Destructive
Made me feel queasy. Back to school for the doctor.
I can appreciate a flow but at the end of the day I couldn't stand the citing of random schematics. like a man locked in a cage
Kinda lame but giving benefit because it was early in the game.
This is so insane. Lol. 1-800-PP5-DOODOO. 😂😂 all these songs were written by a 12 year old
This album is all over the place. Avant-garde for the time perhaps, but isn’t my style.
Not my favorite type of groovy rap
Fairly forgettable 90's hip hop by Kool Keith with off the wall lyrics and sexual humor.
One of the more original and inventive hip hop albums, with elements of psychedelia and trip hop amongst the standard beats. You tend not to get 40 minute concise albums in this genre and it starts to go on a bit in the last twenty minutes. I can't get TOO worked up by it but it was a diverting listen for the most part without saying a great deal poetically.
Far far too many songs
They were definitely trying to do something fun here but kinda missed
I’m afraid I was not high enough to appreciate this.
New genre; Fantasy Fetish Rap
Good technique over some boring-ass beats, with lyrics that sound like they were written by a horny 14-year-old boy. Cover art this cool shouldn’t be wasted on a product this subpar.
Not a big fan of this record. I liked the flow at times but it’s too… old school hip hop for me. Idk the production just fell flat to me.
This was a listen alright. Don’t care for the vocals or narrative though i’ll give it points for having a set in stone theme, i do however enjoy the beat and flow. Overall, not for me.
Never heard of, will never listen to again.
I don't know. It didn't do anything for me. 2.5 Stars Edit: Just read some of the other reviews. Kinda glad I didn't do a full on intentional listen on this one.
I like the concept, but I was a left a bit disappointed by the album itself. Despite the many interesting choices in production, very few tracks grabbed me. Favourite track: Blue Flowers
Where is MF DOOM?!
The worst part of 90s Hip Hop albums are the skits. This felt like one long skit, especially because KK's voice is very one note. Beats are good, lyrics are dumb, Pushead art is cool. 2.5⭐️
Dan the Automator er sådan en fed producer, jeg ville ønske han arbejdede med mere interessante rappere
Funny concept, but it was a bit too dirty and too long. It might work on a song or two, but a whole album was too much for me.
Again another hip-hop I haven't clicked with. Doesn't have the funky beats of Jurassic 5 or Public Enemy.
Because Deltron 3030 exists, this one suffers by comparison. I like most of the weird flow and ideas, but the porn stuff loses me and is a real yikes.
Op zich verrast, maar niet helemaal mijn ding
Ok well that was a lovely beginning. This album sounds like something a 12-year old thought was funny. Some of the rapping is good but it's just few and far between all the unpleasant doctor skits.
I can't. I won't. Please don't. It wasn't noisy in my ears but also what are these lyrics? what are these sound effects? I am judging me for listening to it.
Þessi er ekki beinlínus ferleg, en hún er skrýtin án þess að vera áhugaverð eða skemmtileg. Eitt rennsli og tæpur tvistur.
2 sterne
Eh, the story is BS, but there's too many good things to ignore this one completely. 2 stars, the "story" really pulls this one down.
Either the album is too conceptual for my taste, or it tries to be more than it really is.
This thing felt like a bargain bin Enter the Wu-Tang cosplay. Same “grimy skits between tracks” blueprint, except instead of kung fu clips you get corny medical bits that aren’t clever and they’re just there taking up time. The whole album comes off like it’s trying way too hard to be weird, and it ends up sounding like someone dared a decent rapper to make a concept record and then forgot to write the actual songs. I finished it out of spite, not enjoyment.
I truly don’t know how to feel about this record. There is something undeniable about the talent on this album and the idea is different to the usual fare. However, many of the lyrics are pretty juvenile and it kind of leaves me flat.
Plenty better hip hop albums on this list
# Album Name: Dr. Octagonecologyst # Artist: Dr Octagon # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Naw, not my thing at all. Too long. Poor overall. # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? No
There are some decent grooves here but I really cannot be doing with the juvenile ‘pornocore’ or whatever he calls it.Just stop. Next
The forerunner of a lot of good rap music. Unfortunately the music itself is not that good. 2.5
Unusual concept. Kinda amusing in spots. 2.5 stars
4.5/10
2026.02.25-26.
558/1001
это самый хорни альбом что я слышала, Мигель подвинься
beats are good. Vocals are ass
It's... not very good. Beats are okay if a bit flat. The horrorcore rap is not enjoyable to me at all. What is the point? MF Doom did characters way better and he is not even on this list. 2/5
#44/1001 🇺🇸💀🥼👽 Musically i love this. Less keen on the subject matter but i guess that this was the 90s (no excuse - it's just silly). It's better when he's not talking about medical procedures. Best tracks: 3000, Bear Witness
pretty dull monotone album not sure what it brings to its genre or the music world in general
2 out of 5. It had a flow and the album art gets a point.
The production and turntable work are the strongest parts of this. The rapping is fine and I can have a fun time with juvenile lyrics and subject matter, but it gets a little exhausting over the course of a full hour. I didn’t hate it but was kind of relieved when it was over. Obligatory “this is kind of misogynistic” knock.
Definitely not my thing. Ridiculous and rapey.
About 30 seconds in, you have a pretty good idea what you’re about to experience. To me, this album was clearly made by a very talented rapper and producer (it’s instantly apparent we’re in the same solar system as Deltron 3030). But they chose to focus those talents on shock rock and gimmicks, which I find off-putting. For a conceptual album, it’s pretty flat, with not much being developed after the first few minutes (at least until you meet Doc Oc’s 208-year-old shark uncle)! Also, I lost count of how many times he said “doo-doo.”
Good beats, very poor themes. Has his 7xl been invented yet?
Niet voor ons
The beats were there but the flow and rhymes missed the mark. Didn't care for the delivery and I'm not sure if they want to be nerds or womanizers. Either way, it didn't work for me.
pas mon style mais sympa à écouter
Some good beats but that can't save the absurdly juvenile lyrics and pornographic intro/skits.
50. interesting
Better than I was expecting it to be, but also nothing really stands out and it just drags on and on. The skits are lame, the production is neat, but the flow is inconsistent and the theme gets old real fast.
This is a weird, and cringe, concept album. I'm sure it was well received 30 years ago, but porno like dialogue to open the album sets a bad tone and the gag gets old really fast
Нет ну это пиздец доктор октопус какой-то за что
Some beats are not bad but the album is overall disturbing.
? twas ok
niet mijn ding
I liked the first half of the record, but then it became too long and my attention span is fucked up, tbh. Nice production, though.
I don't like when rap just sounds like an endless beat with a guy talking for the whole 4 minutes
To start. Kinda trying to be edgy, skits are bad and doesnt flow nicely. Not sure the hype but the dj was alright
I quite enjoyed his vocal stylings and flow. I couldn’t abide the concept album thing, whether intentionally juvenile or not, I just didn’t want a full album of horror and porn, I give him credit for doing something different but I just didn’t need the content, but that’s a personal taste. Musically I enjoyed the album a whole lot more that I could the holistic experience, hence only 2 Star
I have a pretty high tolerance for dumb and fun in my music. For instance, I like Motorhead. This was a little too much for me since probably a good 25% is gibberish and the whole thing is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of what a gynecologist does, but I guess I don't really know what alien gynecologists from Jupiter do. The music is ok, but not breaking down any walls. I'm not a big fan of his flow. I was able to listen to it twice without hurting myself, so I won't give it 1 star.
Part way through and I can tell this is a solid 2 for me. The rapping is okay, though not my thing. The spoken interludes are just awful.
Def not for me. DNF.
Some clever rhymes, too reliant on vulgar themes. Similar beats and rhythms to Gorillaz but not as good. I’d recommend Delton 3030 instead.
i am going 2 stars on this one. 1 star for being bad. 1 star for entertaining me with the nerd / comicon / sci fi / porn lyrics. poor mans Wu-Tang
Not my jam. Maybe I’m too old but there are no songs with any real meaning here.
Not as good as i remembered.
Sexually deviant alien doctor. Got it.
It was around "Halfsharkalligator-Half-man" where I began to suspect this man is not a real doctor. Absurd. Flow comes and goes but this goofy ass album is here for good.
I know, I know, 90's hip hop is my jam but this shit gets on my nerves
That was weird, in a better way than your usual macho bravado rap, way. Some good scratching, but most tunes weren't up to much though.
Dès que je commence à apprécier de plus en plus le rap et le hip-hop, on me balance cette bouse au visage. Un rappeur sans conviction sur un instru turbo ringard? Qui est-ce qui peut être excité par ça?
What seems to be a talented rapper let down by really poor quality content.
Not my jam, pretty silly album title, a bit odd
This was kind of clever and interesting at first but devolved into blather and juvenile BS long before the record ended.
Rap. Nice to hear a different theme but it didn’t do it for me. Production was nice.
Ok
type of lyrics I’m gonna be writing when I inevitably have a schizophrenic breakdown
A weird as hell concept album. For bits and parts, the beats were good. And then the lyrics would start again. Call me crazy, but I don’t love hearing about rectums in my music. Pros- it’s certainly *creative* Negatives- it’s a LOT.
Actually liked the beats but then listened to the words and the misogyny and lewdness was just horrible.
Trying to be funny and different over very generic beats. Maybe one or two tracks that were catchy but it was mostly just dumb
I will not be seeing this dr again.
5/10 Its certainly different and interesting, but the lyrics are just so bad.
What bothers me the most about this album is that he actually has some good songs and parts but then he overlays it with the crude peepee poopoo and gynecology horror/humor that just makes me check out. If you had focused on the good stuff this would have been way more successful.
1.5 Interesting concept for an album. Complex and some shock rhymes with 90s NYC boom bap beats - but complex rhymes doesn’t always mean good music (looking at you Eminem!).
Eeeeeeh, dann doch irgendwie zu speziell für mich
Weird but not bad. Good beats but some really out there lyrics.
Not terrible, but not a fan. At least it isn't Kanye.
One-trick pony, but at least it's a trick I've never seen before?
This was probably cooler in the 90s, a lot the production feels dated, but not old enough to be retro. Some good verses and tracks, but overall not really my favorite. The gynecologist shtick/skits didn’t really hit. Love that this probably paved the way for acts like MF Doom, but don’t love it for itself.
Not my favourite old-school hip-hop album ever
Funny. Weird.
< The Beatles Interesting vibes but kinda shitty
lame.
2/5
Not great rap
I’d never heard of Dr. Octagon until I started this project, but I know that this is one of the lowest rated albums on the site. Granted, I assume that calling your album Dr. Octagonecologyst is probably going to trim down your target audience quite considerably. However, the only thing I know about this album is that it’s not very well liked; I don’t even know what genre it is, but with a cover like that, I’d peg this as some sort of weird noise rock. I guess it’s time to visit the doctor! Ah, so this is a rap album by Kool Keith, interesting. I’ve heard Kool Keith’s name before, but I couldn’t tell you a thing about him. This visit to the Octagonecologyst was certainly a unique experience, and while I appreciate the strange vision that Kool Keith had while making this album, this just wasn’t for me. My initial impression of this album from “3000” was not a good one. I didn’t care for the odd rhythm to Keith’s flow, and his unusual rhyming scheme threw me off too. However, I thought the beats, music, and production were pretty good. I tend to enjoy east coast hip hop more than west coast, because I like that darker production sound on albums like 36 Chambers or Illmatic. Keith was able to take that east coast sound and morph it into this strange and alien-like album in a way that worked pretty well. As much as the first track threw me off, the rapping on the rest of the album didn’t feel as odd with the flow and rhyming structure. The beats and production were consistently pretty good throughout the whole album, but I just wasn’t into the weird lyrics, and I found Keith’s vocal tone to be really flat and unexpressive, which bored me a bit. The Dr. Octagon-ness of this album just wasn’t interesting enough to me to keep me engaged with this album for just over an hour. I respect the vision and the execution of that vision, but I didn’t particularly care for this album. However, the skit with the voicemail cracked me up. ‘1-800PP51-doo-doo’ will be burned into my brain forever, and I think this was the first time in my forty years of life that I’ve heard someone say ‘doo-doo’ while Pachelbel’s Canon played in the background.
Was aight. Recognized more than I thought I would
haha, i don't know what this is. But I had never heard it before. The lyrics are... quite graphic. Beats are actually decent - got Insane Clown Posse vibes. I found it more comedic than anything.
nuh uh
Uhhh no thanks
The beats and the music are ok, the lyrics are between weird and disgusting.
i like the concept but not the execution. i'm not a fan of the rap style or actual content. but i think this shows that horror rap needs to be way more of a genre than it is because i need this but good lmfao
not my cup of tea
Five stars for delicious weirdness and production. Minus points for lyrical content.
Kinda shit
The idea of a a sci-fi, comic character, rap persona is interesting, but this album, alas, was not.
I felt like the beats were lacking in this album. Dudes flow was good. He dropped “doo-doo” a couple of times and I really enjoyed it. I couldn’t fully vibe with this though.
„Dr. Kool Keiths assoziativer, manchmal grotesker Sprachstil kontrastiert dabei mit Dan the Automators sauber strukturierten, futuristischen Produktionen. „Dr. Octagonecologyst“ wirkt bis heute wie ein Sound-Experiment, das zugleich Humor, Horror und Science Fiction zu einem eigenständigen Klanguniversum verknüpft. Es begründete Keiths Ruf als einer der exzentrischsten MCs seiner Zeit und inspirierte zahlreiche spätere Künstler im Bereich Alternative Hip-Hop.
Hmmm
I love weirdness and this has a lot, so that's the strong point. There is some interesting music and good beats, but the scratching is superb. (Which still seems like a strange thing to write.) I find most of the rapping slow and pedestrian. REPETITIVE! I like the alien schtick, but no need for so many butt jokes, dick, jokes, fart jokes, etc. Was glad I've been exposed to it once, but doubt anything here will make the rotation. Solid 2 is all I can muster for it though.
It's weird. Some great beats with interesting musings on top -- but still weird. Runtime might be a tad too long. Did I mention it's weird?
Real Raw //
It's strange; some 90's hip-hop really does it for me, and some really doesn't. This one doesn't do it for me. There are elements of the acid-tinged production that I appreciate, but it stagnates extremely quickly to the point where it starts to actively annoy me after a while. The lyrics also get to me pretty quickly; I'm not prudish or humorless at all, but I was not feeling the crassness of this one tonight. Perhaps I'd be a little kinder if it were half as long, but an hour-plus of the one-note soundscapes was too much for my tastes. 2/5
Langweilig. Die Songs waren nicht packend und kaum auseinanderzuhalten. Der Skit am Anfang hat schon etwas abgeschreckt.
Well, this exists...
Det är inte särskilt bra rap. Det är inte särskilt bra i övrigt. Känns halvhjärtat. Var känner jag igen blue flowers ifrån? Samplat från eller till någon annan lät? Stråkarna känns oerhört bekant.
The music sounds so good even though the lyrics are so awful, confusing. 2.4.
Dr. Octagonecologyst is of its time. I was uncomfortable, to say the least, but it isn't like Kool Keith was the only one out there doing this in 1996. And then he dissed disco, which I cannot abide. (I'm mostly joking.) Aside from that, this was a weird album. Some of it was catchy and interesting. I love a theme/concept, and I suppose I can't complain that the album kept to one. I enjoyed the "General Hospital" skit because I am a daytime soap opera fan. But I guess that's about it.
While all 90s hip hop sounds a bit dated at least, a lot of it has some kind of memorable hook that makes it relevant today. My immediate impression of this album was that it just felt like an artifact of the 90s and didn't really feel relevant. I did like the artist name "Dr. Octagon", but the album title just made me roll my eyes.
Yikes. That was a little too pornographic for my not-so-Puritan ears. Couldn’t finish it.
Not my Cup of Tea, but it’s Fine.
Wow, Ross from friends with a friend that thinks they can rap.
The actual rap is fine here. The beats suuuuuck though. They are biting as hell.
One extra point for the beats and bass being great. Other than that, cringe and lame as hell.
I like the concept but did not enjoy the execution. The sexualization of medical providers in this album is really unnerving as a healthcare worker
Icky. Such as in the track Girl Let Me Touch You
No idea what this is. "you can call 1-800-pee pee 5 Doo Doo" lmao This is one of the weirdest ass rap albums I've ever heard. Very different from what I usually listen to in hip hop. Scott said it's like if Adult Swim was rap and...yeah, that's 10000% accurate lol. That said, I'm actually surprised I stuck with it. I didn't actually love it, I thought it was good, and fine, but just didn't tickle my pickle, exactly.
Good bears but lyrics were nothing special.
Meh, some of it is alright.
Why’s this guy just made an album about gynecology
Kinda ass ngl
Enjoyed the beats but this album was not my usual cup of tea.
Cool beats, wildly imaginative. Not something I would frequently listen too, and quite offensive at times.
eh, alright
This was pretty bad. I only gave it 2 stars because the production is pretty good. The rapping here is all over the place. I found the concept of the album pretty childish and honestly dumb. The delivery does nothing to help here, the flow is pretty off and mediocre, he's often off beat in an annoying way. The verses are also pretty mediocre, repetitive, simple and just not good. The concept again does little favors to help the writing. The production on the other hand is great, most of the beats go super hard. Good sample selection, raw drums and excellent scratches. There are some beats that aren't as good as the others (the "Blue Flowers" one was pretty annoying), but it works pretty good most of the time. If this had been an instrumental album, I might've given it 3 or 4 stars. The best tracks was "3000". "Girl Let Me Touch You" was pretty bad, kinda creepy and the chorus is so bad. "Halfsharkalligatorhalfman" was also so dumb conceptually, I couldn't take it seriously, but wasn't good enough to be funny either. The skits are also all over the place.
Weird album. I kinda liked some of the beats and flows but a lot of it didn't really work and was stuck in that late 90's/ early 2000's shock humor that has not aged well like at all. Also those porn samples were a choice. 3/10
This is one of those albums you understand why it’s influential, but I personally just can’t bring myself to love. There are some great beats in here, and the rapping is solid enough, but I personally don't feel the hype quite yet. I will say that it’s a perfectly funny album though when it comes to the skits, like "Oh shit there's a horse in the hospital!" is an incredible one liner that does nothing but helps you power through the album. This will definitely be an album I keep an eye out on though for future relistens, since I'm sure my opinion will radically change once it properly hits.
Interesting concept but not really my jam
Semmone. Muutama hassu laulu
Taustamusana ihan ok! Tunti oli kyllä tälle albumille vähän liian kauan, alkoi toistaa jo itseään.
This album was like he took all his random internal intrusive thoughts that no one should hear and made them into music. The production was ok.
what a wholly perverted album, lmao. god this was so unpleasant to listen to. i'm not a prude but also i don't really want to listen to an hour of a dude talking about sexually assaulting people. why is the word rectum mentioned so many times? this whole album is about jamming your dick in girls asses without consent the album. it sucks because the beats are actually pretty sick and i wish each song wasn't about buttholes and stuff. the beats are really the only thing barely keeping this from a 1 for me.
Treading the fine line between stupid and clever. I wasn't listening closely enough to be offended, but the grooves are pleasant and I can definitely see its influence on others.
I don’t understand why this is on here with such heavy hitters from the rap/hip hop world
Guy's more of a proctogonologist??
Wow that intro was something to listen to at 7:45 in the morning on a Thursday. Okay I did not like this. Why the hell did it have to be so long?
Rap/hip hop. Listened to Blue Flowers (really interesting strings/electronic background beat), Earth People, Intro. Lyrics are good but not my style.
Maybe if I was still 14 years old? "Halfsharkalligatorhalfman" is kind of fun, I guess.
The obligatory rap related misogyny but without the good tunes. Overall boring.
Meh - 2/5
I wanted to like this but in the same year are Jay-Zs and Eminem's debuts. In addition we already had Biggie, Tupac, Snoop, and Dre all releasing hits, this was a big disappointment.
Great classic 90s rap album. 3/5
i don't care if you have a sexual fantasy of being an evil alien OBGYN. I just wish you would quietly jerk off about it instead of getting me involved 😭
no idea what to rate this. the album's content is gross, misogynistic, and juvenile, but the hip-hop production and editing is top notch. i also think the album art is pretty cool - reminds me of some darker video games and fantasy media from the late 90s. ultimately the album is too long and inconsistent to really make me want to come back to it, ever. let's leave this behind in 1996 where it belongs. favorites: i got to tell you, earth people, bear witness, dr octagon
On the face of it this should be something I'd enjoy. There were some bright moments, but in general I was left quite disappointed. It was still listenable but just not good as I'd hoped (or even expected).
The moment I saw this album pop up here, I thought it was made up. Like, I thought now the generator was fucking with me. Honestly, I’m so fucking over this random goddamn hip-hop albums that run over a fucking hour. Like, goddamn, I haven’t heard of you before and you expect me to have the mental capacity to withstand your shit for 20 songs, give or take? Doesn’t help that this album’s lame as fuck. To be fair, I appreciate the dedication to center the whole album around the abstract concept. There is this weird sci-fi, grimy vibe to it that holds the album together. Unfortunately, it holds as well as tissue paper. The charm died for me not even halfway through, possibly because of the terrible lyrics. Seriously, I hate these songs where the singer repeats the title of the song over and over again. I find it hysterical that apparently this is considered by some to be one of the best hip-hop albums of the 90’s. I think they need their head examined… by a real doctor, preferably. Favorite track: 3000 Other hits: 1977 (it was the end of the album)
I’m quite sure some of the talent here is lost on me, as this isn’t really my tempo. Found this at times distracting and childish, so didn’t love it.
I found the underlying story/character really took me out of this album. A couple of the skits were just bad and the album felt really overstuffed. There's enough here that they could have stripped out a bunch of stuff and made a solid above-average album. But they didn't do that... 2.25/5
boring. The guy says its name like 13 times in the album
I’m at a 2.5 that I will bump down to a 2, even though I genuinely liked about 7 of the tracks here. I don’t know, man. That’s just aggressively mediocre to my ears. Kool Keith had a good feature on Jurassic 5’s “Power in Numbers”, but he sheds that general style here for the eccentricities of Dr. Octopus, the “homicidal, extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynecologist and surgeon”. I am not a big fan of Dr. Octopus. This isn’t a Slim Shady situation where the over-the-top nonsense loops back around to genuinely witty wordplay with a party flow & an enjoyable vibe. Dr. Octopus, as a character, is crass, a rapist, and an all-around generally terrible alien with not a single redeeming quality to him. It’s not enjoyable to hear about his escapades, and there’s never really a comeuppance for it. It’s kind of just torture porn, in a way. Of course, I’m prone to give some degree of leeway since it is still so over-the-top that you can’t imagine Kool Keith advocating for any of this, but it’s aged really poorly into 2025, and even for 1996, this just feels like shock-jock perverted humor to some degree. I just don’t fuck with the lyrics that much. On top of the lyricism being an issue, what really drags this fucking album down is the beats, vocals, & flows. It’s just the most dry energy I’ve heard from a mid-90s rap album yet. Kool Keith does not have a rap voice like a Biggie, a Jay-Z, or a Tupac, and it desperately shows. He’s relatively monotone throughout the whole thing. It wouldn’t be a major issue if he just had a normal flow, but of course, Dr. Octopus being the alien scumbag that he is, simply refuses to glide on the vast majority of these already dry fucking beats. It’s a very “stream of consciousness” style of rap, but it just doesn’t work, especially with the verbosity on so many of the early tracks diluting the theming of the album. Ultimately, I just didn’t like it that much. It’s not the worst album ever, but… fuck me, it’s just boring. The shock jock value doesn’t draw any humor (and that’s like, half the songs), and it’s an hour long, which just means it drags the fuck on. If it were shorter & tighter, I might be more inclined to barely bump it up to a 3, but… nope. It’s just not a good album experience. I don’t know if this should be on the list, really. If I’m ever thinking that, then something just isn’t clicking. Hence, a 2.5 bumped down to a 2. If it clicks for you, then good on you; I hear the appeal, but it's just not there for me. It's a shame, because I do think Kool Keith is GOOD at rapping, based on what I've heard. I just don't really like Dr. Octopus, which makes me kinda disappointed.
Not for me.
Ok listen. Not my favorite for sure. Will not be listening to this again.
It had a few entertaining moments but otherwise was left feeling underwhelmed. Enjoyed the DJ Shadow input at the end. Probs was the best bit.
I enjoyed some of the beats. I liked the backing to that ridiculous Earth People rap, but overall it's a no for me
As a hip hop album it can have a star. In terms of theme and those interlude songs, those can stay in my nightmares
I enjoy some of the beats, but what the hell is the concept behind this album? And why MUST I listen to it?
Not familiar with Kool Keith's work, but this is one of the projects he worked on and its a pretty good album that includes his custom persona as a concept kind of rap album. Its pretty underrated and pretty much a cult favorite. Some weird lyrics in here but I thought it was funny and decent.
Bland beats and weird texts
for the laughs
Not terrible but probably won't listen again
Well it’s not great musically, it makes light of assault by medical providers, and it’s freaking odd. I would give it one star but it definitely made me listen to see what he was going to say next. It takes stones to release something this bizarrely nasty. I fully understand the “why is this on the list?” reaction to some albums. In this one’s case I think the answer is you have to hear it to believe somebody made this- and other people apparently bought it!
Didn’t expect to like parts of this. I don’t listen to rap, but some mixes and transitions were surprisingly cool—bits of classical music, weird synths, and random lines that stuck (“poodle chicken noodle”? no idea, but I like it). Some tracks like “Blue Flowers” and “No Awareness” worked for me—the beats kept me in it, even if the lyrics were hard to follow. “I’m Destructive” had this gritty energy I didn’t mind. But a lot of the album leans into graphic sexual stuff that pushed me out. Some tracks felt more standard and didn’t stand out. Not something I’d revisit, but it has a strange mood that holds the whole thing together.
Classy stuff
Interesting. I don’t blush often, but this album made me. Relies heavily on sexuality
This was....interesting. The beats are cool, but the lyrics are gross.
• 2/5 • like the innovative production and trip-hop beats, appreciate the flow, but find the lyrics to be inane and a major detractor
Toiveena on, että rapin laatu kompensoisi aihepiirin typeryyttä, ja että jälkimmäinen nostaisi paradoksaalisesti edellisen entistä korkeammalle tasolle. Ei toimi. Rap on kyllä paikoin oikein hyvää. 2,5
Not my cup of tea.
Too many skits. Skits suck Annoying because there is good stuff on this. Too long. Far too long
I sat here for an hour and all I got was this lobotomy!!!
Not my cup of tea but some of the music was decent enough. 2.5 rounded down.
Don’t think I’ve ever heard the word “rectum” used that much in an album. I like Automator’s production, but the porno “skits” (we are stretching the definition there) and obsession with being weird got to be too much for me. Best song: Earth People
Annoying and crass. Not for me.
Let’s keep it simple. The Pest, a large bag of weed, and magneto rap. Not quite for me. (1.9*s) My bet is that Doc Oc is not proud of this work in 20 years…
Not a bad entry from an offbeat indie rapper. Not sure how I feel about Dr. Octagon as a rapper character overall but I guess the album has some funky scratching, wacky production and unorthodox lyrics that can be enjoyed for single listen. It starts off OK but loses its luster by the end of the album. Points to Dan The Automator as another notable Gorillaz collaborator handling the production. You can do a lot better but you can do a lot worse on this list. 2.12 stars
Meh, cool beats but very uncomfortable lyrics. Hasn’t aged well imo
Couple of good songs.
2 Stars (5/15)
Some songs here that are just whack like 3000 and Earth People. The beats aren't the issue here, but the flow and lyricism are just lame. Wastes otherwise strong production. Kept waiting for a song to come up that changed my mind about this record, but nothing ever came. Mid 2.
Wow this looks scary! About halfway through and I feel like I would've liked this a lot more when I was younger. The beats are actually pretty good and somewhat remind me of Linkin Park in a way, but I can't get past a lot of the lyrics. High 2
Not really, no
Throughout this the beats are consistently decent (good never great), but the bars consistently disappointing. Decent flows in parts, but really nothing noteworthy. Also the Dr. skits just take away any goodwill from the better parts of this album.
weird album, and not necessarily in a good way. quirky lyrics and style. the “lyricist” tries to be clever and funny, of which he is neither. annoying is the best word to describe it.
What
the beats were okay… i don’t think he’s a very charismatic mc though
a struggle. i knew it would be a struggle, and a struggle it was
Keep this man FAR away from me dog what in the world was that.
concept wise its cool and there are also some nice beats but overall doesnt work that well imo
Didn't vibe with this one. I didn't find the production very interesting.
Peepee Doodoo! The doctor is waiting for you.
Never listened to this before, but I did know Dr. Dooom from the same Kool Keith. With a talented and open-minded producer like Dan the Automator who’s worked with everyone from Gorillaz to Mike Patton, RZA or the Black Keys, I was at least expecting something original and off the beaten path. And yep, this is definitely the opposite of commercial rap. I’m really into this psychedelic, jazzy production. That said, even though there are some real gems in there, it’s a bit long, uneven, and not always the easiest to get into. Also, Kool Keith’s flow often feels a little too dated for my taste.
Great beats. If only everything else was as good
as the album's name suggests, this is a blend of juvenile mindset with some good beats. I saw there was an instrumental version of this album--that was probably pretty good.
At one hand, it has some decent beats, while on the other, the rapping technique of just spewing out stuff with no flow or anything decks it down a few notches. Ehh... ⭐⭐
Rare miss from Automator.
Dr. Octagon, a homicidal, extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynecologist and surgeon...interesting concept, can't say I've heard anything like this, which is mainly a strange, creepy scenario excuse for a rap/hip hop album. I'll admit the beats and music are listenable, but if you focus on what Dr. Octagon is saying, this would appeal to the childish, immature, disturbed audience this is must be directed at. The weird thing is I didn't hate it as much as I should. Really though, have you ever heard "rectum" used so often on an album? Hey, it's okay he's a "doctor".
3/10 - None of the songs I liked and some of them made me quite uncomfortable. It was just not very good and I was anxiously waiting for it to end
Copernicus mentioned
The beats are fun, rhymes/flow are cool, but the lyrics and content are way too fucking lewd for me. Go figure that an album with a name like this would be childish veering toward downright abusive.
Don't mean to sound like a prude, but this is pretty sophomoric. It's nice Mr. Octagon is having fun. Some of the skits made me laugh.
Just was not at any point interested. Sorry, couldn’t get into it. On top of that too long! 2/5
not for me
2 - pretty terrible but it gets a point for its absurdity
WTF
Väldigt långt album, med massa peepee poopoo juttun. Helt bra hiphop nu och då
Fav: Bear Witness Least Fav: A Visit To The Gynecologyst Liked the beats, but an hour of the rapping really brought it down for me
It was fine
Weird, fun – out there in a way that stops it ever fully coming in here. Thanks, Dr.
sometimes we can just leave things in their era
idk man
"Operation: Doomsday" from Wish
No estuvo taaan mal, aunque las letras son bastante adolescentes.
Чёт хз
In theory this should be up my street: cartoonish, high concept alternative rap with production from Dan the Automator, whose work with Deltron 3030 and Gorillaz I really enjoyed. Unfortunately in practice I found it quite dull and repetitive.
