D's
I didn’t know what to make of this one.
A friend recommended White Denim to me a long time ago. Somewhere along the way, I picked up their Fits LP, which was OK, but did not become a regular feature in my listening diet, although I really like the track "Say What You Want", which also turned up on a Mojo magazine cover CD at one point. The thing I appreciate about White Denim is that they are a bit math-rock, but it doesn't immediately sound like it unless you pay attention. What do I mean by that? I watched a few live videos, and a lot of what they play include complex riffing and changes in time signatures, and all of the other clever-clogs features of math-rock, but, unlike most math-rock bands, they don't subsume the rock-and-roll-ness under the weight of their cleverness. That said, this album is a bit more laid back, with moments that remind me of Jeff Buckley (Is and Is and Is). I went back and re-listened to Fits, and I prefer the loudness of that album. This album is non-essential listening. 2.5 stars, rounding up.
Good drugs music and if I do some drugs again I may listen to this music
Somewhere between a country band and a rock band and a jam band. I didn't hate it!
I rather enjoyed this. Which is unusual for me regarding Indie from this time.
3 stars
had some standout moments
3.5
This is fairly good I think. Nice Psych rock: 7.3/10
Diverse if somewhat overstuffed, fairly forgettable indie. Nothing to love or hate about it, really. For being somewhat short songs, they're way too jammy. Fave Songs: Street Joy, Keys, Anvil Everything
Un disc curiós, que al seu moment em va passar desapercebut, però que mereix atenció. Indie rock prou original i infecciós, ple de capes, influències i guinys a altres bandes i époques que donen per molta diversió i manté el seu interés musical en repetides escoltes
Yes lot's going on, almost too much. The shredding at the end of At The Farm is a wonderful thing, and it's a right old southern stew. 3.5 but it's tough at the top so rounding down guys.
A little too much dad rock for me but I really enjoyed the indie psychedelic vibes. Street Joy stands above the rest!
Not a bad rock album. There are moments during the dual guitar solos that remind me of the Allman Brothers.
Interesting album, I enjoyed it
Ambitious power rock. I love the jam sessions and the exploration into funky realms. This is a great album to throw on in the background of friend gathering.
I enjoyed it but nothing really jumped out for me
Never heard of the album before - thought it weird it was on the list. But wasn’t bad, sort of like indie funk. A little too Muzak for me but a few songs I might put on a mindless playlist. 3 stars.
Some cool songs, not my favorite
A new band to me, and interesting. I don't actually encounter a lot of modern alternative chanelling that countrified psychedelic rock of yore. I liked it but it didn't bowl me over. I was kind of distracted when I was listening, though, and think the group probably deserves more attention.
I love so many of their songs but haven’t found a full album that keeps me engaged. This one included.
Deez nuts
Jam bands be jammin. This however is some of the better jam band music as it has bluesy rock songs and isn’t filled with boring long instrumental tracks. This album is pretty good and I enjoyed listening to the band. Will probably listen to more of their music. 7.1/10
A fairly eclectic blend of Grizzly Bear, My Morning Jacket, and Zeppelin's jammier moments. Pretty good at times, but there is a fair amount of "filler."
I keep deleting my notes :( First two meh. Back at the farm is fun instrumental. Others have been fine but kinda forgettable and background-y.
Decent rock but without any memorable highlights
It was a nice “background” album but not quite my thing… Opened strong with the first song, but I don’t think i’d listen to again. Maybe a bit too instrumental for me
Descent album. HAppy discovery
I like the sound on some of the tracks but I'm not as into the prog-rock whirling guitar sounds that they have going on. When they did tracks I thought they were pretty good. Standout Track: Is and Is and Is
Not bad. I had never heard of them, but like their southern rock sound.
All I know about White Denim is that they opened for Tame Impala in Chicago sometime in 2012 as Kevin Parker mentions them several times throughout the set on the live album, referring to them as “freakishly good musicians” I think Kevin is spot-on in his assesment - there are some impressive runs here, and each track has a lot going on melodically without feeling too chaotic. Do think this LP could’ve benefitted from fewer hazy interludes, though, as the tendency here to eschew locked-in rhythms and pounding guitars with hazy synths time and time again is a bit frustrating. Would like to see what’s in this band’s back catalog, this album was promising but needed a more grounded approach in my opinion
Varied and interesting rock, blues, boogie... with a alternative vibe that makes it anything but 3 chord straight rock. Street Joy and Is and Is and Is stood out for me, but much of the rest of the album was fine without being too engaging.
fuck flutes burnished, back at the farm
Decent listen
It's interesting. Garage jazz feels like a reasonable description. It's not for me, but it also sounds pleasingly odd. I listened twice because it felt like there might be a way in for me, but I couldn't find it.
Heard before: no Completely new to me, but it sounds like it has a lot of influence on The Dodos and Vampire Weekend. At first it sounded jam band-y, an immediate turn off, but on subsequent listens, the jammy stench fades. It's much more carefully planned and intricately played, more prog than Dead, with both crazy time changes and heavier, bluesy bits. A lot of fun, it's a record that shows its depth with each play. Top tracks: Bess St., River To Consider, Anvil Everything
Un excelente álbum de rock que mezcla tendencias progresivas con códigos de la música norteamericana clásica como blues y country. Claramente influenciados por Wilco, la banda expande el sonido de la ola alternativa dosmilera estadounidense.
This felt like one really long song
Stupid band name, but music is quite good. There is an interesting going through this album
3.5
It was alright
yeah it was good
Will probably re listen to this. Really liked the last two tracks
As indie rock began to grow throughout the 2000s, it required a certain amount of innovation to keep bands from sounding stale. Taking a page out of many midwest emo bands of the 90's, indie rock bands would become more technically proficient as a way to add more variation to the songwriting. Enter White Denim. A little bit jazzy, a little bit psychedelic. A little bit savory, a little bit sweet. The boys are talent, there's no doubt about that. I do think that Dwight Denim lacks memorable moments in exchange for impressive song structures. It's fun in the moment.
good casual vibes
This was pretty good. I think I need to give it another listen.
Phish and Radiohead are obvious influences. Hoooooooooly fuck, is this thing busy. At certain points, I'm convinced they have two drummers just absolutely going at it. It can be a bit distracting, but when the members gel together, it can be great. A conflicting record. Favorite tracks: "Back At the Farm", "Bess St."
Enjoyed a few songs more than others. Definitely a bit of prog-psych-indie going on that works pretty well but doesn’t manifest itself to me as entirely enticing. 3.5 down to 3.
Never heard of this band before, not bad.
It was a good listen but 1001 worthy? Not sure.
This was a bit different. I’d never heard of them before but they sounded different on some tracks, like they were channeling bigger bands. Quite listenable so 3*
It was alright but I cannot now remember a single thing about it. Probably should be a 2 but recency bias means I have to give it a 3.
There were quite a few indie bands went prog around this time. This is one of the better ones, but still....
I can hear the excellence in the production, but the album didn't light my fire.
This was weird. I didn't hate it, I didn't love it. It sounds like a band that was almost really good, but just didn't have that "thing".
I like White Denim. I even have a different record of theirs. But this is another album where I’m not exactly sure why it had to be included on this 1,001 list.
Eipä ole tullut aikaisemmin kuultua ja oli raikas yllätys. Pari kertaa pyörittelin läpi.
Honestly a 7/10 - good meld of prog, jam/psych and 2010s indie
Album 98 of 1001 White Denim - D Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Keys This band from Texas is totally unknown to me. Some good tunes. Some good hooks. Not really comparing, but some of the guitar work brought to mind the great Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band. I think he was a Texan, as well. Some decent stuff here. Nothing that hits are made of but I never found myself wishing it would end.
I honestly thought this was at the very soonest a 90s album. Right when I saw this came out in 2011 I knew just about exactly what I was in for. A dreamy and stripped down sounding alt-rock album. That was just the popular rock music at the time and I remember it. I think this type of music is largely inoffensive but I normally skip it. This album has some interesting stuff going on though. It's like if Fleet Foxes was louder. Nice driving pace for most of it. The flutes were kinda neato. The slower songs didn't drag too much. Not the worst 2010's rock album I've heard. 3
Bra. Kanskje litt for indie for meg, men neo-psykedelisk vege opp
2.5/5
Fell a bit flat.
Cet album n'est ni bien ni indie, par contre robgruyère est bien un sacré trou du cul.
I liked their sound butnot all of the songs were up tp par.
Started off a bit derivative from 60s psychedelia. The middle point started to get really catchy and strong. Anvil Everything. Part-Yes, Part-Dead, Part-Jethro.
I liked this but it wasn't extraordinary.
Pretty chill background music
Enjoyed this in a general way, but nothing in particular stood out to me. It's not really original enough to get me excited either; you could have told me that a few of these songs were by My Morning Jacket, The War On Drugs, or Grizzly Bear and I would have believed you.
Not bad. 3.5
White Denim deserves a little more listening I believe!
"D" is the fourth full length studio album by Texas band White Denim. The album genres listed are indie rock, garage rock, progressive rock, pyschedelic rock and Southern rock. Yeah, sometimes all within the same song. The band increased from three to four members and was able to use a more sophisticated studio from their previous lo-fi approach. The album received wide-spread critical acclaim. "It's Him!" starts out with a fast pace with the drumming and swirling vocals. The start-stop approach. They got Grateful Dead guitar and they also threw in some pyschedelic, 60's and Southern rock. "At the Farm" is even faster and a great Allman Brothers-ish guitar jam. "Street Joy" slows things down with acoustic guitar. It's dreamy. They're in My Morning Jacket territory now. "River to Consider" adds a flute and congas. It's a Caribbean-jam band fusion. A trippy ending. The band continues the pyschedelia on "Drug" and why wouldn't they. For most of these songs, I had no idea what the lyrics meant. I do on this song and maybe that's what all the other songs were about too. The album ends with "Keys." A country-guitar jam with a plodding bass and a viola. This one is interesting. This album was alright. I'm honestly struggling to find it an essential 1,001 album. The band is technically very sound especially the drumming. They change tempos and styles. At times, they sounded like Phish, The Grateful Dead, The Doors, The Allman Brothers and My Morning Jacket. And add in pyschedelia, prog and country rock. I think that's my problem; what's their identity? But, if you re a fan of anything listed above, you might like this.
Fine.
This was a surprise. Nice phrasing of the rhythm guitar, cool simple leads, jazz flute to boot!
This was interesting, never heard of them before. Bits of it I really liked, others weren't as easy on the ears.
This was alright! I liked the indie sound and it reminded me a bit of The Black Keys. I would listen to this again. Would rate 3.5.
Standard hipster rock fair for 2011. Nothing really stands out and it all sort of melds together. This is sometimes a good thing but here it’s a distraction and makes it all sound like ambient noise.
Nice background listening, but a bit bland for the foreground experience. 3/5
Never heard of them, enjoyed the album. I do wish they would have chosen a style but still, pretty good.
Eh 3 Got kinda boring. But thats just because I stopped listening
This just kinda sucked.Very boring. The production felt very flat and clean. There was no girt or excitement to it at all
Enjoyed it.
I am not familiar with this band at all so came in with zero expectations. This album is definitely something, it's an incredibly succinct and tightly packed and to the point record incorporating a wide variety of sounds. Touches of garage, prog rock, psych rock, and math rock. It's wild how much it has going on. Seems like it's been very well received. And it is good, just not exactly for me.
Not my style but pretty decent
If Ty Segall dropped acid with the blokes from the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers, it might sound a bit (or exactly) like this. 3.5 stars rated down to 3 as I enjoyed it but all blended into one kinda same-ish guitar jam.
honestly wasn’t expecting much but ended up enjoying the sound! the avant-garde take on what was otherwise a pretty traditional formula at this point was very refreshing.
I'm the first to admit that I don't understand my own tastes and preferences in music specifically and art generally -- best I can do to describe it, especially as I get older, is "I like what I like" (yes, it's really vague, I know, but it also frees me, or at least is a big step in the direction of freeing me, from my own expectations) -- and my frequent dismissal of so-called "psychedelic music" or "jam bands" doesn't match up with my overall experience of life, but, hey, I like what I like. That being said, this album caught and kept my attention a bit more than other bands in those very broad categories, and that to me is a good thing. Might be their musicianship, which is superb, and their ability to balance the "garage band" feel with genuine high-level composition and performance. They also seem influenced maybe by some indie rock, alt-rock, or gentler side of punk. I hear something like that in some of the tracks. Because I was also a bit disinterested in what they were doing at times, I got a little bored here and there. I think the overly meandering sections might be one of the elements of psychedelic and jam band music I don't like...that, plus when the players just sound like they're too high and have gone to that place I know too well when it's silly self-absorbed stuff. It reminds me of some nights in college when my friends and I were enjoying ourselves on some psychedelic substance*, thought what we were saying was really profound and insightful so we recorded it, then when we listened the next day or two when we had sobered up we really just sounded like jackasses (oh, thank you, tech gods, for not creating smartphones or even easy-to-use video recorders until those years were behind me!). I'd love to say it was at least funny when we played the recording, but it wasn't even that. We honestly just sounded like jackasses. Not completely sure I'll return to this album or seek out more of their work, but I might. I think I heard enough on this record to interest me. * - for what it's worth, for anyone who cares, I neither condone nor condemn any individual's choice to take anything mentioned here, or anything at all. I am not in a position to judge. Also for what it's worth and for anyone who cares, while I don't judge I truly, genuinely, and sincerely care about each living being and really do want each person to be safe, happy, healthy, and loved. I promise I know what it feels like to feel alone, and I also promise from the bottom of my heart that you are not alone.
This is weird... but in a kinda neat way.
Wasn't a bad album, in fact, there were moments of fun. It was quick and easy to digest. Never heard of these guys before but I don't think they should be on this list.
A thousand pounds says this artist is British, let's take a look: holy shit, it's a Texas band. I owe someone some quid. I said that not because this sounded British, but because it seems rather unremarkable, and when this list includes something unremarkable, it's usually British bias. I don't know what to say here, it looks like this was acclaimed on release. I gave it a second try because it's quick, and it breezed by me about the same. Not bad by any stretch, but I'm stumped by the inclusion. I'm not some sort of expert or svengali, but given how much music I am familiar with, any post-2010 album on this list that I've never even heard of is going to be puzzling. Favorite tracks: Back at the Farm, Street Joy. Album art: Really cool cover here, I love the kaleidescopic, mosaic, tapestry whatever you want to call it. Very cool stuff going on here. Had never even seen this before, let alone heard of the artist. 3/5
fine
One of those bands I like whenever I listen to but never go back to or own any of their records. This is great. Maybe a bit proggy in places for my taste but decent. 3/5
Very jammy and busy, not my favorite white denim but still cool
A bit of a mish-mash of styles, but overall it really works.
this seems pretty creative but i’m not all that moved by tasty riffage of this sort
Couldn’t see a ranking for this, which makes me wonder if it’s new to the list. If so why? Doesn’t strike me as a seminal addition to the 1001. Echoes at times of fleet foxes, pink Floyd and most of all psychedelica. And we know the author loves this genre!
Indie rock/ cool vibe/ a bit too country for me/ sometimes intelligible
3.5
Album doux et calme que Julie aimerait bien 3*
Just fine, pardner.
I thought this really picked up at the end of the album, but it turned out my streaming service had just switched to playing similar, and slightly more catchy, music. I was impressed by the lengthy guitar harmonies and jazzy bits, but didn't really enjoy them that much.
This would have been better if they had a better singer and stopped with the whole Disney Channel kids in a rock band in a basement vibe.
Did not like the singer’s voice. So it threw everything off for me.
I enjoy the diverse influences and they seem pretty well constructed but the album made me thirst for a melody Highlights: "Burnished", "River to Consider", "Keys"
Each song is ok except for that one sonic decision that makes me want to wave my hands and make them stop that part.
The Wiki page made it sound like this album was gonna be a banger. Imagine my surprise when they turned out to be the equivalent of an opening act for a 1970s group. Not bad just totally forgettable.
This is aggressively 2010.
One or two songs have potential but in general, another nothing burger from this list which should be labelled, '1001 ways to waste your time'
Well, the little hot streak is over.. this album is like a musical Rorschach test. If you can make sense of this chaos, you're either genius or insane. Nothing feels cohesive; instruments are at war, vocals off doing their own thing. I spent half the listen trying to figure out what era it's from.. '70s punk protest? Early '90s alternative rebellion? Or perhaps a fever dream from the future? My advice? Save yourself some time and skip this auditory maze. They totally ripped off Pink Floyd, too. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - It's Him! - Street Joy
Oké album paar leuke nummers maar beetje saai. 2,5/5
Iihan okei
I also thought I would dig this a lot more than I did
There's some interesting stuff, but overall i didn't like this album
More retro than I would've liked. There are some good moments, but for the most part it kinda passed me by without leaving much of an impression. Probably an album that was added to the book and immediately removed in the following edition. Key tracks: Street Joy
2 stars for keeping my attention despite everything about it sucking butt
Not for me
I couldn't figure out if I liked this or not. I really enjoy seeing bands pop up that I haven't heard of before, because I hope it's something new. This felt didn't feel new at all. It sounded like so many other bands. It wasn't bad, it just didn't grab me in any way.
Mucha energía, divertido
Not unpleasant but unmemorable
I have never heard of this artist so I am going into this completely blind, with no expectations, although for some reason the album and artist name in combination said hip-hop to me, a theory that was immediately disproven. The second track, Burnished, sounds a bit 70s throwback, Led Zeppelin-ish, maybe. Then Back At the Farm was a moderately interesting instrumental, but not a track I would even save to my Spotify Discovered, and again it sounds like a Zeppelin tribute act. Anvil Everything is a bit math rock. Like a worse Akron / Family.
Average sound, good beats but not enough to make it worthy of listening a second time.
Ni idea de qué es esto. Se me ha hecho corto. Me he guardado "Street Joy" que veo que es su canción más famosa. Más o menos prescindible, aunque supongo que en los USA tendrá su público.
Nothing special
This is a very new album but it has that old sound to it, although it's not necessarily bad.
Had caught a couple of White Denim songs way back when, Tony Fatti and New Coat, that do more for me than any song on this album. Maybe I'd feel differently if I listened to D back then.
This is a tad too American for me. Absolutely cannot stand the singer's voice.
I’ll give it another chance later
Pleasant 70s prog pastiche, no more
2 1/2
Album 137. D (https://open.spotify.com/album/24l0lgTXOsgBms7ISsLKcn?si=wIziPQPYQjmFz_osqaE-dg) — White Denim (2011) D — dull. Another boring garage indie rock album af. I don't know why it is here. 2/5 No liked songs
I don't think I ever needed to hear this.
Talented group, but too generic, very forgetable
Inoffensive is the word I'd describe to this, while it tries to act like it is something, at the end of the day it is a quite tame album. His voice really brings into this feeling, because throughout the whole album it really doesn't feel like he does anything with it. Having some sophisticated parts and solos doesn't automatically deliver something of sustenance. But, at the end of the day, it is a product of it's time and it really does sound like it is from 2011.
It was like an eclectic temu version of Radiohead
So inoffensive that it didn’t really register with me while I was listening to it. Fine but bland would be my only comment.
I'm confused on why this has so many high ratings. It was so bland. Like boiled chicken. I also felt like this album had no direction- I couldn't tell what they were trying to achieve with it. Oh and. The end of 'Bess St.' sounded suspiciously similar to some instrumentals by Yes (who obviously did it better anhway)
4/10
I don't think this album was bad per se, but I didn't even realize it had ended
Heard Before? Nope. Finally something on this list I've never even heard of. Notes: - production is mostly bad - crowded, noisy, sometimes ugly. I get the retro idea, but has this engineer heard of EQ? - drums sound especially terrible, all cymbals with a muffled snare and inaudible kick. - similarly, the arrangements are ridiculously busy. the players are all highly technical, but do all of them really need to play the whole time? silence is a virtue. - vocals are lovely, though often buried. - bonus points for flute and guiro on "River to Consider", my favorite song. - I should be careful what I wish for; the more conventional songs are pretty but forgettable. Verdict: A mix of highly technical throwback rock and dull ballads. Listen Again? I saved a few tracks for later. I didn't love it, but I feel like I can learn from it and I'm always down to give things a fair trial.
Wellwell. For me its too light.
Boring and the album cover is ugly.
Apparently this is considered psychedelic but it's really sort of rehashed 60s pop rock. It's not bad per se but certainly not memorable in any way. Another why is this on the list album
Somewhat perplexed by all the glowing reviews. The playing is fine, but it’s just so toothless and bland. Feels like psychedelic music by people who’ve never actually done drugs. I guess it’s better than Dave Matthews at least.
What a stupid addition to this list. Did they pay to get put on here? I honestly don't get it. they sound like a mashup of a bunch of classic rock bands. it's fine as background music, i guess.
This wasn’t bad per se, but it definitely activated my allergy to jam bands.
Never heard of this group at all. It sounds like Lo-fi millennial soft rock music. I just knew the singer had a beard. It’s like pop rock but neither at the same time. The guitar playing isn’t so bad.
i liked all the songs, but only two of them i added to my playlist. it doesn’t fully match with me
Reminds me of Inhaler a little bit. Very summery vibe, I feel like they’d be great live. Has some really unique instrumentals. Fav song is ‘It’s Him!’.
- I really like the guitar playing on this - by far my favourite part of this album. I also liked the flute on River to Consider. - Overall, I found the sound a little too full and busy - there's just too much going on in the instrumentation, so nothing really had a chance to stick out other than the electric guitar. - The singer's voice was a little bland and high up in the mouth/nose - kind of like blend of Travis and Radiohead (and someone else I can't put my finger on - someone in the reviews said Arcade Fire, maybe that's it). I also couldn't make out the lyrics. - I think I liked the instrumental song (Back at the Farm) best on the album - that surprises me because I'm not really into jam bands, in general, but I liked the guitar work a lot. - It grew on me with a few listens, but I still can't see myself ever reaching for this - the melodies aren't memorable enough. It's probably a solid 2.5. - I might round down because of that shitty cover... kind of encapsulates what I was saying about it being too busy.
If Wilco and Black Keys started a butt rock band
I wasn't overly keen on it. It was kinda ok background chill music but didn't really grab me
Never heard of this band before, apparently they were big about 15 years ago. Technically competent, modern sounding, and pretty lackluster and dull mix of kind of trippy psychedelic proggy rock. Sounds aggressively millennial. Doesn't feel like it aged well and not for me. I really like the one hit from this album, Street Joy, and that's about it. But at least it was only 37 minutes.
From the first note I had a feeling it wasn’t a bit of me. It did get better, felt very samey up until street joy. That was a bit jarring, felt like I’d started listening to someone else entirely.
started of well got too much at some point, felt like I should go get a matcha
Prog folk? No thanks
It's alright, the type of thing I'd throw on in the background during a lazy Sunday. Despite its release in 2011, it really does have a very mid '2000s indie feel to it. Something about the general atmosphere and feel of the album reminds me a lot of Beck's releases from that time. There were a couple of highlights here, especially early on. 'Street Joy' was a really solid slow ballad, even though the growly delivery on the chorus gave me flashbacks to all the worst kinds of over-the-top ballads that plagued the 2010's pop scene. It was fine enough here, though. The psych breakdown on 'At The Farm' was pretty good too, wish they did more of that particular thing on this album. 'Anvil Everything' has the same sort of chaotic psychadelic energy, but is overlayed by this really sweet melody by the lead vocalist, which I enjoyed quite a bit. So, a few really great songs here, but a bunch of everything else here was far too forgettable and uninteresting for me personally. Again, it's certainly a vibe, but not something I was entirely engaged with.
u an¿¿¿¿
This is deep into jam band territory. They are technically pretty solid. Clearly know what they are doing. Didn't hate the listen but won't remember it.
Ultimately forgettable. The instrumentation is fine, the vocals made me struggle to pay attention.
Not for me
This sounds almost disturbing. Four musicians each playing different parts, but I am entirely unconvinced that they all belong to the same tune. There is no cohesion. 2/5.
I do not get the appeal of this group. Hyped to death on UK radio despite sounding like an overly-technical pub rock outfit; King Crimson play the hits of the Steve Miller Band. Mercifully brief, at least.
this was not my thing i fear.
Functionally impressive and plainly plain.
5/10 Passed by without notice. Nothing offensive but nothing noticeable either.
Serves well as background music. It gets dull quickly when you start to actively listen to it. The cover art is great though.
D minus. White denim, plain white tees and plain white pitchfork indie sonic palette. Definitely heard other albums from this group that are more interesting.
When was it that Indie Rock died? After this, surely. 2009, maybe?
boring
It's fine, but not very memorable. Why is it on this list?
Can't believe this album was made in the 21st Century. Nothing new to say whatsoever
Ok
Another band that is both new to me and slightly misses the target for my musical tastes Glad to have heard it, but wont be adding to my collection
5/10. Relaxing but not attention grabbing
Звучит как ребенок Radiohead и King Gizzard, но без интересных песен. Лучшая песня - Street Joy.
Not the worst thing I've ever heard but not great either
Very progressive musical I guess not really my favorite.
Weird sort of 60s vibe. Not particularly good or interesting.
Good at their instruments, bland at songwriting
No jams for me. 2.
2,5
2011 might not have been a vintage year for music but is this really one of only two albums of the year important enough to make the list? It wasn't bad per se, just pretty forgettable. I did like Street Joy and the instrumental before it though.
Burnished is a cracking song, bristling with melody and ideas. The rest of this album is so-so. Worth revisiting now and then but not a must listen.
It's good but just so damn ordinary
Bit boring. Great musicianship, but didnt really get me.
meh
In the end it was too complicated and muso
Eh
Your standard indie rock album. Not terrible, not great. The lead singers voice is very similar to other indie rock singers. I’ve never heard of this band before.
White Denim - the satirical choice - evinces grave disregard for common decency. This album isn’t that. But, the odd (in every sense of the word) exception aside, it is a rather rum do.
The Good: We know the grade before hearing the album… The Bad: Too many listeners seem to think that it is a C+ The Ugly: White denim… I mean, who in their right mind wears that? There are times when a totally unknown album/group gets you slightly excited before hearing the first song, and then makes you wonder about people’s taste in music by the time the last song has played… Austin, TX, is a hotbed for music, and the launching pad for several international stars… White Denim not being one of them. I guess that if your sound is too eclectic, at times making you think you are listening to Pink Floyd, then The Rolling Stones, then The Grateful Dead… well, you got to some choosing to do. Was the album bad? No, yet, I listened to it twice and can’t recall a single song. Will I listen to the album again? Most likely not… it just didn’t hit the right spots for me. 2*
Another Allbum where it's just ok for me and I don't see what is so special about it. but if it*s 5 stars for you then keep enjoying it!
Austin Rock n Roll, but very…tame? It’s fine, and I like it, but this album isn’t my favorite in their catalogue.
4/10
Correcto
Not a fan of jam band Phish stuff. Definitely talented musicians…wasted on this unfocused, long-haired hippie crap.
🤷🏻 It felt like this one never knew what it wanted to be. I can appreciate genre hopping, and not every band needs to pick one lane, but I just never got my head around this album, nevermind finding it essential.
eh
I’d never heard of this band prior to getting this album in the generator, so was excited to listen. Well played, but ultimately a bland record. I enjoy similar musics played better by others, so this flew over me. I can see how folk might enjoy it but - without wanting to sound pretentious - anybody with more than a fleeting interest in music will know this ground is covered better elsewhere.
Unremembrable Prog rock
This album was not remarkable or noteworthy. I can't believe this was released in 2011 because it sounds like it's from the seventies. In fact, they're like a knock-off Eagles but not as good. I was consistently reminded of what other artists accomplished in the seventies, and nothing original stood out on D.
Inoffensive but boring. This album absolutely smells of 2010s indie rock. Anyway, a 2 might be a little harsh, but it really just didn't grab me at all.
This album was so generic and boring I forgot I was listening to it. It sounds like it's trying to be M. Ward at times and My Morning Jacket at other times but fails to be as remotely interesting as either. Their albums should take this one's place. Specifically, It Still Moves or Z by My Morning Jacket or Post-War by Matthew Ward
Eh. Not bad, but nothing stood out. I won't go back to this one. "White Denim"? More like white noise.
Well, the music didn't bother me. However, there wasn't anything that I want to hear again. A bit boring overall. 2/5
I feel pretty neutral on this one. Sounds like something I would like but nothing jumped out.
Liked the sound, but it didn't pull me in.
I found this rather chaotic and confusing and all over the place but gave it a second listen to see if I was just missing something on my first pass. It didn't improve my opinion. They're obviously talented musicians, but nothing felt like it "went" together, and the vocals sometimes felt like a whole different entity than the band. Some of the songs had moments of okay-ness, but for the most part, their jams weren't my jam.
Got a decent seventies vibe but nothing to keep your attention
1970 called, they want their album back. There are some good times here, just a bit unremarkable.
Very boring
Landlord sez Meh! 2
A bit like Yes.
Much like the album art, the music is a bit of a mess and it’s hard to discern much from it all. 4/10
Not a fan
One or two songs were enjoyable, but overall, not a favourite.
I like my psyche less polite and polished than this.
OK.
Nothing special. Run of the mill album.
Not so much. Maybe later in the day.
Need to give this another go sometime. Seems like music that needs focus to appreciate. When I tried to listen to it while distracted, I found all the layered business almost nauseating and couldn't hear through it to the actual songs being played. I like messing with time signatures as much as anyone, but a lot of these just felt to me like musical exercises for their own sake.
There was nothing interesting about this one for me. Pretty me all around.
Never heard of them or anything they ever did. This album has some listens, the most popular track being "Street Joy" (7.5M listens). Not even remotely familiar but I'm not into eclectic jam band stuff. Online it says "White Denim is an American rock band from Austin, Texas, United States. Their music is influenced by dub, psychedelic rock, blues, punk rock, progressive rock, soul, jazz, experimental rock with home-based recording, jamming approach, intense looping work and unusual song structures." In other words it's a mess. A couple too many influences for my liking. Nothing gripped me or compelled me to keep listening. Sounds like a modern Grateful Dead who bred with a jazz band, just shorter more boring songs. You gotta like jazz structure, or lack thereof, to enjoy these guys, and I don't. I found their sound to be irritating, 2 stars for trying.
Interesting listen, couple good tracks, but not really to my taste.
Quite liked a couple of these tracks
I listened but remember next to nothing
Haven't heard of the band before. Honestly, there are some quite interesting ideas on this album but ultimately not something I'd go back to or enjoy casually 2/5
2/5 stars. Not my genre or my type of music. Nothing remarkable. Street Joy was the only song that I kind of liked but even that was forgettable and I wouldn’t listen to it a second time.
I liked this album for about 2/3 of the way through. Then it got a little tiring. I'd listen to some of it again, but not the whole thing.
Had to listen to this twice cause i was so bored with it and i forgot everything in it. I dont know if its the mix or what. The musicianship is great but its flat as shit, maybe too many elements. Would sound great at a vintage fair / coffee pop up
Det är bara ett problem med plattan. Den saknar bra låtar. Inte uruselt dock.
I usually rate these albums as soon as I listen to them, so as to capture how they make me feel. It’s been a few days since listening to this one. I recall feeling…
Thought I might like this- kind of like upbeat fleet foxes but I found myself wanting to tun it off more as it went on.
Listened to this while working, not bad but not particularly memorable either.
Would’ve gone hard at a festival 50 years ago Best track: Street Joy
Kinda white bread sort of music - didn't particularly tickle my fancy but is pretty inoffensive
meh
It's easy when the album rates itself. 2 stars or D+.
This might deserve a relisten, but I didn’t find it that great the first time. The songs had a timeless sound, kinda like the dead, but nothing really stood out to me. It’s odd to say really, there’s a lot of different instrument interplay in the songs, but it doesn’t amount to a whole lot
fine
I don't think we need to bring jam bands back. I think we have exhausted that genre already.
Some clean songs, some messy ones. Back at the farm was my favorite
Another day, another album everyone completely forgot 2 years after its release
It was alright
Ei ollu mun makuun. Vähän mitään sanomatonta joillain oudoilla elementeillä. En päässyt ihan kiinni siihen missä tässä oli idea. Pliisu kokonaisuus ja unohdettava.
Easy listen, though nothing really stood out to me. Similar in sound to the Black Keys. 2.5/5
Pre-listening thoughts: two albums from the 2010s in a row! Crazy Post/during listening thoughts: had literally no idea what to expect going into this. It’s like soft spoken millennial psychedelic rock which… hmmm.. idk. This is like that arcade fire album where I’m just meh on it. There’s some energy here though. And expertise. I have to give credit where it’s due and some is due here but not too much. It’s still kind of boring. 4.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nope Fav tracks: It’s Him, Is and Is and Is Least fav tracks: Back at the Farm, Anvil Everything
Interesting album. 60s vibe, for sure, with influences from Santana, the dead, and even a bit of prog rock. The lead singers voice is often drown out by the music. I don’t hate it……..but I’m not in love with it. Sounds like a lot of music I have already heard.
2 Stars (5/15)
More jam band-y than I was expecting, in a way similar to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's more Grateful Dead-esque albums, it had some of that Southern rock charm infused with the sound of hundreds of indie rock bands on the 2010s. However, I find it to be weaker than most of its contemporaries and influences, lacking any real defining personality, and getting bubbly and psychedelic for the sake of it. We're talking about an album with a song just called "Drug." Even Talking Heads knew to throw a plural form in there! It isn't offensive or really all that bad, but it is surface level with its tone, and that can really be a shame when you know this style of music can be pulled off by many others while this album gets left in the dust covered 2010s. Certainly a step up from your other folk-influenced indie groups of the time, I'll take this over the Lumineers or Mumford and Sons any day (not that they're all that comparable) but I would not prefer to sit through this again, as I think the sound would just start to bug me.
Sounds like any other rock band from the 2000s
This was fine, but nothing that I'd ever want to listen to again.
Marie Kondo says this does not spark joy, so off it goes in a box to the hospice shop. Unremarkable guitar rock that might work as a soundtrack for a Magnum PI reboot.
Not great as an Indie fan
Never heard of them before, but it's pretty interesting fusion of different catchy music styles. Not bad.
Mega XPN-core album. Sounds like if Cold War Kids were psych-rocky, folky, grateful-deady. Great instrumentation, but kinda bland tbh
Listened to it yesterday and honestly can’t remember. I think the first song was cool and the rest just ok.
Hey ma! Someone got shitty prog rock and jazz chords in my garage rock.
I enjoyed the final track so an otherwise dire album scrapes a 2.
This album is great if you are really happy and don’t want to be.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Street Joy (4) 2 - Back at the Farm (3) 3 - Drug (7)
Nothing special I found
What if a kings of Leon knock off was also a jam band
It was just kind of boring. Not my favorite genre
Why are there so many albums on this list described as 'psychedelic'? Is it because men don't crowd together into one bed at a sleepover and discuss thoughts and ideas about the universe, so it's not until they drop acid at age 25 that they discover the idea of sonder? That all seven billion people on this planet have their own unique thoughts and feelings influenced by the things they experience throughout their lives? Does the reverb added to an overly-long guitar riff remind a person who lives like this of the concept that they are not alone in the universe and are, in fact, but a small speck in the massive ocean of life? Is that why?
Sehr ruhig….
Meget kedeligt synes jeg. Lyden af start 10'er skovmandsskjorter og fuldskæg. Et par fine nok momenter ind i mellem
I don’t understand bands in the 21st century who seem to be attempting to sound like 1960’s bands. That stuff has been done, well. Imitation may be flattery but it isn’t going to make for great new music. It would have been a three star album in 1969, but I’m taking off a star for its lack of originality or ambition to move things forward.
Strange album from a band I wasn't familiar with. Kind of a mash up between jam and psychedelia. Not my jam though...1.5/5
Até que o instrumental despertou o meu interesse pelo som da banda, mas não deve ser suficiente para escutar mais.
I could hear the influences of other musicians, which I enjoyed. The music did not hold my attention. I lost interest. The singing didn't add much to the performance.
I have to say that while it is a good album, I didn’t find anything particularly original or inspiring about it.
Okay, kinda forgettable - street joy is always good
Fine but not for me
Initially I thought this just sounds like 2011 distilled into 37 minutes but by the time I got to Street Joy, it had reeled me back in. Then it lost me again and suddenly it felt much longer than 37 minutes. It felt like I always had another track to get through.
It's like they took the least interesting song off of each King Gizzard album and put them all together. Has some cool moments (mostly near the end), but like, whatever, dude. Just like the album cover, it's kind of an unremarkable mess.
a bit dreary for me
I don't remember much about it
I listened to it but I can’t remember much. Which means it at least wasn’t too bad, just not my thing.
Eh
Is ok, aber gehört eigentlich nicht in diese Liste 2-3
I think I just really don’t like psychedelic prog rock. This is just lost on me. Clearly it’s well made for what it is. But I’m gonna stab a bitch if I have to keep listening. 2/5
Completely forgettable. I don't remember a single song.
A couple of songs grabbed me but a bit too much jam band noodling for me.
Meh
Pretty meh. Nothing on here really stands out.
Con tutto il rispetto, non uno dei 1001 album che devo ascoltare prima di morire. Non il mio genere.
These guys are great musicians, but this is just too proggy for me. It’s like Allman Brothers made by engineers. Still, not going to give this my 1 star kiss of death, as I can tell that this band is very good, just not for me.
Not Bad for a retro album from 2011 but why exactly is this part of the list?!
Intriguing sound and instrumentation but the prog-rock, jam band elements and vocals eventually grated. Actually had trouble placing this music in time before I'd seen the album release date.
Not really my thing. I acknowledge there was this big neo-psychedlic rock movement going on, but I don't like the original stuff and this is no better. Entirely forgettable when placed beside its peers.
I think I just really don’t like psychedelic prog rock. This is just lost on me. Clearly it’s well made for what it is. But I’m gonna stab a bitch if I have to keep listening.
bleh easy listening
A fairly banal indie entry with fairly forgettable music.
Meh
