Reviews (page 3 of 7)
I was surprised by this. Some interesting stuff happening here, definitely sounds like it was made in 1990. I think Sinead O'Connor is one of those people who existed in a slightly different plane of reality than the rest of us.
My notes from yesterday didn't get saved. Talked about liking it thematically and there were some really great songs in there
169/1089 a really nice and thoughtful album. it opened very strongly for me and i think it didn’t quite maintain that strength for the whole duration but i enjoyed it nonetheless and saved 6/10 songs. faves: Feels So Different, I Am Stretched On Your Grave, The Emperor’s New Clothes, You Cause As Much Sorrow, Last Day Of Acquaintance, Jump In The River 72/100
I had forgotten how many good songs are on this album. All these years later, no one sounds like Sinead.
Sad and lovely
It feels bare at first, like something is missing? Instrumental depth? Then it grows on you, to the point where her vocals become that missing piece, and then the sorrow fills in the cracks, and finally her quirky yodels really slap you in the face. The b side is beautiful.
Has the potential for future generations to rediscover
This was amazing! I had never really listened to anything but what was on the radio and this was terrific. Really enjoyed!
Meget fængende vokal, interessant produktion, god lyrik. Minder mig en smule om bjørk men også meget unik, rigtig god!!
90s folk rock. Hauntingly beautiful voice, gentle, modern folk. Very pretty.
This album is primarily a soft, sparsely arranged pop album. It features some more upbeat tracks with noticeable drum beats and some soft tracks that serve primarily as vocal showcases. The singing is excellent, and the backing tracks are tasteful and well placed. However, some production is fairly dated. The lyrics are well written, but not quite excellent. While the lyricism and vocals are high points, the album's true strength is in its spare, down-to-earth nature. It prefers introspective statements to the brash bombast common in pop, allowing the songs to shine for their high quality writing.
This is the first time I have ever listened to I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got by Sinead O'Connor, I have always wanted to give this a listen. This album is beautiful. There is so much variety on it, powerful songs and lyrics of great meaning. I really enjoyed the listen and will be playing this again. Favourite track: Nothing comapres to you is a classic song and so emotional when watched with the video. Feel so different was also a great song. There are a good 5 on the album you could pick as a favourite. Least favourite track: Everything on the album is great. Album artwork: Classic album cover, raw with emotion.
Beautiful album, diverse range of songs and arrangements. Amazing vocals.
I think I listened to this a while ago and forgot to review it. Knowing this, I happily listened to it again. The title track at the end gives me the chills!
What a voice, what a person.
Opening track is a banger could remix
What a voice
I don’t ever need to hear “Nothing Compares 2 U” ever again but there are other good songs on this record, and listening to it again it’s easy to remember what made O’Connor so special.
She has a great voice and some good varied songs.
Once again, I don't love a ballad but I really like the singer. I also find the instrumentation to be very dated and dated in an era I have a hard time with so I think I would enjoy different people covering these songs better? Idk maybe I'm way off. Major kudos to the woman who can successfully cover Prince.
This isn't my vibe but I can appreciate it. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
C’est un album très calme, sa voix est top ! Je crois que j’ai ce vinyle, à vérifier ! C’est très lithurgique / cérémonial je trouve
Slow start and not a fan of the closing song but love the middle. songs i would listen to independently
Music is better than I remember. The lyrics can be cringe from time to time but it's much better than i thought it would be.
Wow. Haunting in places, and surprisingly funky in others! Not exactly a fun listen but hats off to this. Sinead O'Connor knew exactly what she wanted to say and always delivered it with a punch. The honesty here is visceral. The sheer nerve required to make ethereal exquisite art from pain. Rip Sinead you were a real one.
Magnificent irish voice, reminiscent of the cranberries lead singer. Minimalist instrumental. Melancolic tone. Songs of lost love
*listened before the project* She was…so special, like ice in fire.
It is a beautiful album. Her voice is so clean.
Good album considering she arranged, produced and played most of the instruments. Obviously the outstanding track is nothing compares 2 u but I hadn't realised that it was sung about her very abusive mother who died a few years prior, puts a very different slant on it. This track is a generational classic and still gives me chills listening to it.
Another nostalgic album
Lots of pain under that beautiful voice, which makes this one so compelling. Time has vindicated many of Sinead's observations and criticisms, which makes this one as poignant today as it
Excellent album.
Beautiful. Emotional. Irish. Powerful
A couple of slower parts here and pretty sparse musically, but I think that’s the charm of this album. Intimate and evocative of a private concert. I’m a huge fan of Sinead O’Connor’s vocals. I love The Cranberries, so I’ll take any amount of Keening that I can get. Overall, there’s a melancholy to her music that’s hard to shake off. I try to separate the albums from their respective artists, but it’s hard not to think of her personal and professional struggles that followed her success. She was obviously vindicated after the fact (fuck you Joe Pesci and Madonna) but it seems like her struggles were more from the attention she received as a whole, and the Pope-tearing incident was only a part of the story. At least my GOAT Morrissey knew what was up and supported her.
Jealous of those hearing this for the first time. It’s hard for me to separate my love for Sinnead the person and Sinnead the artist without sounding sycophantic. Maybe not perfect but an amazing album.
Good
This one is difficult. I enjoy a lot of the music, while it still feels aggressively 1989, and is preachy preachy preachy. It's also impossible to divorce what I know of her life from the music. But, of course, her music is so autobiographical that maybe I shouldn't even try.

a horse, a horse, i came down for a horse
What an incredible voice. Love the depth of the lyrics. A lot of very interesting things done musically as well.
Very calm and serene, I like this 'spoken word' type of album that places more emphasis on what's being said than the actual music. At the same time, the melodies are quite interesting as well even if they're more subdued Was not expecting the sudden stylistic shift at The Emperor's New Clothes Feels a little weird formulating my thoughts on music like this for the first time, but I expect it to become more natural
Exquisite and haunting. Her voice is incredible and she uses its full power in the delivery. The album functions very well as a whole, with songs transitioning seamlessly from one to the other. I love that she decides to touch on so many important issues and uses her music as a force for good. Listened to it several times to get the full experience. My only issue is it's sometimes impossible to focus on anything else apart from the music as her voice is quite distressing and the music is disturbing - but I guess that's the whole point.
Great album. Early 90’s alt pop sounds with a lot of reverbs mixed with traditional vocal deliveries give this a unique vibe. Sinead has an excellent voice. Every song is good. Favorite tracks include Three Babies, The Emperors New Clothes, Nothing Compares 2 U, You Cause As Much Sorrow, Last Day of Our Acquaintance, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got.
Honestly better than I though
My first time listening a full album by Sinead O'Connor and I enjoyed it quite a lot. Her voice was beautiful, soulful with lot of emotion, melancholy and gravitas to it. The songs are quite simple but well written and nicely produced. It's usually not my kind of music this is rounded up to 4 stars.
Too important to ignore. "Emperor's" remains a minor masterpiece.
Normally I would give this 3 stars. Which means it is decent music but nothing that blew me away. Enjoyable listen. But Nothing Compares 2 U? Man, it is one of those songs that just blow you away. Easy extra star.
Nothing Compares 2 U is gorgeous, and the rest of the album is very good. 8/10
I was a kid when "Nothing Compares 2 U" came out and suddenly it was EVERYWHERE. And that video. Sinead, with her piercing blue eyes and totally shaved head, just staring at the camera singing her brains out. Incredible. So while I was familiar with the big single from this album, I had never listened to it in full. My album before this was Morrissey's Vauxhall and I, and there are some striking similarities between that album and this one. I Do Not Want's... more rocking songs could easily fit onto prime Moz solo albums. The production and songwriting are especially close in tone and sound. But the quiet moments here are devastating in a way Morrissey could only dream of. "Three Babies," "Black Boys on Mopeds," and "You Cause as Much Sorrow" are beautiful musically while their subject matter is incredibly heavy. I have to say though, "Nothing Compares 2 U" is unequivocally the highlight. Yes, the song is great, but it's Sinead's delivery - heartbroken, headstrong, self-assured, and devastated all at the same time - it has to be one of my favorite vocal performances. FOUR STARS
Sinead’s voice. So emotionally powerful, haunting and beautiful. I hadn’t listened to this album in many years (& not sure I ever really sat down and listened to it straight through), so I’d forgotten what a powerful and gorgeous record it is. Listening to Black Boys on Mopeds made me sad to think that all these years later, the world is dealing with the same issues, and sadly, perhaps things are even worse now. But leaving aside existential human problems, and also leaving aside what I think about Sinead O’Connor’s actions and statements, the music is undeniably special, and this album is a gem.
Great stuff. Incredible voice. Nothing Compared To You (written by the genius, Prince) is 4 stars alone.
Now and forever, fuck Margaret Thatcher.
RIP Sinead
I expected so much more from this for some reason. I'm partial to 'Black Boys on Mopeds' because Kevin Devine covered it at a show once *swoon*. Overall, pretty legendary record that I hope people don't listen to for Nothing Compares 2 U only.
I love Sinead O'Connor and everything she tried to do/be in the 90's. She has some amazing work! Her battle with mental health issues, unfortunately, clouded her contribution as an influential female artist toward the end of her life. Definitely gone too soon :-(
Rating: 7.5/10 Really enjoyed the diversity of sounds on this album, Sinead O'Connor sounds fantastic while still being interesting sonically as well.
Beautiful singing of serious songs. Didn’t deserve the rage that was aimed her way. Brave.
Favourites: I Am Stretched on Your Grave, The Emperor's New Clothes, Black Boys on Mopeds, Nothing Compares 2 U, You Cause as Much Sorrow, Last Day of Our Acquaintance
Was surprised by how much I enjoyed this album!!! Love the Irish sounds 😍
i’ve never given Sinéad O’Connor a true listen before. after listening to this record, i wanna dig deeper into her catalog! 4/5
Loved it. Solid record. Made me feel defiant whilst filling out a work survey that I was too honest on. What’re ya gonna do? RIP to this beautiful soul of a human, Sinead O’ Connor. Her version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” is great, but I’ll say that I prefer the Prince demo or the live version with Rosie Gaines more, but again, what an incredible cover. “Feel So Different” would be my choice for second best on this album, or maybe “Black Boys on Mopeds.” Great album. Period.
Nothing Compare 2 U is beautiful and the rest of it is pretty good too.
Quite low energy, but she does have a nice voice and excellent songs.
okayyy
Beautiful and haunting at times, Sinead has just got a fantastic voice and her Irish accent is so lovely. This album was a beautiful listen, the title track was probably my favourite.
great but didn’t love every song
Nothing Compares 2 This.
Glad this popped up on the generator. I have not listened since the 90s. Even though each song is different in style, the tone and angelic voice of Sinead truly make it an easy listen that is cohesive and thoroughly enjoyable. I listened multiple times and got sucked in each time. The lyrics are thoughtful and poignant. I cannot say enough about how much I enjoyed this.
Ok
Sweet
There are a number of artists with albums on this list that could be considered "tortured artists." Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Nick Drake, you get the idea. Among the most interesting of these artists has got to be Sinéad O'Connor. It's fair to say that her life and career were tragic, but more often than not, she used that as an opportunity to do something meaningful. Of course, this extends to her music, which, as I now know through this album, is quite good. This album's great! O'Connor's voice is captivating and emotional. The production and instrumentation definitely have some left-over elements from the 80s, but they sound nice, so that's all I care about. There are some elements that feel less like 80s music though. "I Am Stretched On Your Grave" weirdly reminded me of Portishead. The writing is the highlight for me though. Of course, not all of it is Sinéad O'Connor's writing. You do have the excellent Prince cover that is "Nothing Compares 2 U." Amazing cover. But there's a lot of variety on this album in the lyrical department. You have love songs and such, which makes sense. Some songs are remarkably tragic, like "Three Babies" which appears to be about miscarriages. Damn. Sinéad even gets political with the song "Black Boys on Mopeds." I would say I'm surprised to hear Sinéad O'Connor openly criticize a figure as influential as Margaret Thatcher... if it weren't for the whole "tearing up a picture of the Pope on national television" thing that many people know her for. She was done so dirty after that. I really respect her for that move. I also respect her for this wonderful album she's got here. Great stuff. Strong 4/5.
Thought this was pretty good.
How is she best known for a cover? Incredible poetry.
I'm Stretched Over Your Grave...love the Funky Drummer hook. Good album start to finish. Love her voice...which can go from breathy to a cannonball in 2 seconds. Nothing Compares 2U pushes it from 3* to 4*.
O'Connor's voice is great, and I especially loved the more uptempo tracks on here (Emperor's New Clothes was a standout for me). I'd almost forgotten how powerful Nothing Compares 2 U was. A solid four. I still think Mandinka is my favorite track of hers (off the previous album).
Feel so different; The Emperor's new clothes;Jump in the river are very good. Album is beautiful, but not my cup of tea 7/10
Album No. 0012 on my list. Before listening to this, I only ever knew one Sinead O’Connor song (yes, it’s the one that is also on this album), so there was a lot of new stuff to get into here. I didn’t really know what to expect, but in general this album is quite good! Beyond the aforementioned uber-hit (currently nearly 500 million streams on Spotify; the 2nd most popular song from this album only has 18 million), there were various great songs: “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, “Jump in the River”, and “Last Day of our Acquaintance” appealed to me in particular. O’Connor’s voice is just great in any song, and there are some cool guitar licks and lyrics on this as well. To summarize: a solid 4/5 stars, will definitely listen to this album again!
It would be revealing if you could go through this list in chronological order. This album is really good. For me, the most impressive part is how it (mostly) avoids all of the issues that made its contemporary albums in the late 80s, early 90s SO BAD.
I enjoyed this! Beautiful melancholic voice and simple, timeless, well-written songs. Not a 5 because some of the songs are forgettable but as a whole it's definitely something special.
The Emperor's New Clothes Nothing Compares 2 U The Last Day of Our Acquaintance
4/5
love it
P fun
Haunting and emotional. She has an amazing voice but it's the rawness and force of her performances that make this album so great. I like the mix of instrumentation, with some songs having whole string sections, a couple of rock songs, one with vocals and drums, a few with acoustic guitar and one a capella song. Nothing Compares 2 U is of course phenomenal, and Last Day of Our Acquaintance was my second favourite.
This is a really good album. Not perfect but a good listen, plenty of songs and a really nice sound.
a tortured soul who was clearly uncomfortable with fame, sinéad o’connor never shied away from speaking out about injustices in the world. in fact she spoke out against the catholic church when literally nobody else was, a move that cost her dearly. this album made her a household name, all due to her gorgeous cover of “nothing compares 2 u”, an obscure tune penned by none other than prince. the rest of the album is stellar as well, on the strength of songs such as “three babies”, “black boys on mopeds” and “the last day of our acquaintance”. overall, poignant lyrics delivered by a unique, yet gorgeous voice.
This is gorgeous. I knew a fair amount about Sinead and her life and her amazing activism but I never thought to stick on a record of hers as it's not traditionally the kind of thing I'd gravitate towards. But as I'm getting older my sensibilities are mellowing (if you ignore my recent grindcore obsession) and I can see myself revisiting this in the future. A lovely record that really demonstrates the value of me doing this project.
Don't think I've ever listened to two Sinead O'Connor songs in a row, but I did enjoy the variet of this. Her Prince cover is still an all timer. 3.5/5
Lovely album
Bra album, ikke mye å utsette! En klassiker.
Look, if there’s one thing O’Connor most certainly had it’s a voice. Her voice is constantly the thing I liked most about this album, including the opening two tracks and the final track which I didn’t particularly like. The remaining tracks however are all excellent. Of course there’s the song everyone knows “Nothing Compares 2 U” which is excellent but also “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, “Black Boys In Mopeds”, and “You Cause As Much Sorrow” which I particularly liked
A classic, if slightly uneven album. Equal parts quiet and loud, but not much in between. Don’t get me wrong, I love nearly every track on it, but her debut, The Lion and The Cobra, flows better.
Phenomenal voice! I listened through this several times trying to decide on my rating and I liked it a bit better each time. Maybe a little soft-rock for my typical listen. ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ is clearly the front runner here but some of the other tracks are gems too. 3.5/5
Ireland moment
beautiful first song: "feel so different". Overall a solid 7/10 album for me.
I realized I only knew later, post-controversies Sinead. This still has angry moments, but it’s not at the loss of musicality (which I feel is a latter day Sinead issue). There’s a lot of beauty here, and even some bangers. I was pleasantly surprised.
heard this a few times before Feel So Different - 5/5 I Am Stretched on Your Grave - 5/5 Three Babies - 3/5 The Emperor's New Clothes - 4/5 Black Boys on Mopeds - 5/5 Nothing Compares 2 U - 5/5 Jump in the River - 4/5 You Cause as Much Sorrow - 4/5 The Last Day of Our Acquaintance - 4/5 I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got - 3/5 Average score: 4.2/5 it's pretty good! some tracks went on a little too long for my personal liking, but that's a small nitpick for an otherwise solid album. although a couple of her most popular tracks are on here, Lion and the Cobra is still my fav of her work so far
Beautiful album.
rly good
Her second album. Sings, writes, produces and composes all her own music. Her voice is haunting. Every single track has gravitas. Sinead O'Connor has something to day and I totally believe her. Nothing compares 2 U is a beautiful track and one of the iconic songs not only of the 90s but by any female artist ever. This isn't 'You Go Girl' type stuff like many female artists today. This is intimate, emotional, raw, poetic and at times confronting.
I, probably like a lot of y'all here, knew this woman from that time she ripped up the Pope's photo during her performance on SNL. Really glad to know her music carries that same energy. By the way, for anyone that needed to know, her name is pronounced like "shin-AID." spared you a Google search.
So many good songs on this album. Her version of Nothing Compares 2 U is amazing, and just as good or better than the original from Prince. But, following up on that banger, is Emperor's New Clothes, Three Babies, I'm Stretched On Your Grave, Jump in the River... This is definitely worthy of the title, Must Hear Before You Die. 3.75/5 stars
Such a haunting voice. It makes up for the simple instrumentation around it, and makes it not needed.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, to be honest. Not my new favourite record, but a worthy entry on this list and I'm delighted to have listened to this.
Pretty good, has several great songs and some that would grow on me
The Irish know trauma. Somehow the normal trauma of being Irish wasn't enough and Sinead O'Connor had to suffer more. She suffered more than any human should and she turned it into art, which can be gut-wrenching and painful. And beautiful. 4/5
I was so pumped for this and feel bad because I maybe put the bar too high, but I was surprised to be feeling underwhelmed so often. Its beautiful, but also like a heavy blanket you’ll want to save for a cold, lonely day.
p650. 1990. 4 stars Fine voice and arrangement, let down by some filler. Still fabulous after all this time though. Rest in peace, ya lovely mad Irish bitch. "And I liked it all/Like the times we did it so hard/There was blood on the wall"
One of the more interesting and controversial pop stars of the 90s for sure. 3.5/5 #79
If it was a whole album of nothing compares to you it would definitely be a 5 stars. However, despite being good, the rest of the songs don’t hit the mark in quite the same way. Beautifully haunting though
Soft sincere and pretty
Легенда и гигачаддесс. Вечная память. Лучшая песня - Nothing Compares 2 U.
WOW
Powerful stuff, so much more than just a vehicle for Nothing Compares 2 U. Always loved her defiance and non conformity as well as her music and it doesn't sound dated, which surprised me a bit.
Love me some Sinead! This album is quintessential Sinead and I loved it. Her songs are filled with passion, rebellion, and activism and I’m sad she is no longer with us. What an icon. Do yourself a favor and give this album a listen!
Really pleasantly surprised by this one. Felt like it had the potential to crash and burn, but wound up being very enjoyable
This is a really strong album and I am constantly amazed by her singing voice, so powerful and amazing control. I think I prefer Lion and the Cobra overall but that's more a reflection of the strength of that album rather than a failing of this one.
It's like a punk album in slow motion. Really started to grow on me. Nothing Compares 2 "Nothing Compares 2 U" tho.
Didn't know much of Sinead's music besides the Nothing Compares 2 U cover and that chanting she did when she ripped up the picture of the pope. This is really good! More upbeat than I thought it would be, and quite catchy. I enjoyed this.
Upon first impression, Sinead O'Connor has a commanding presence that feels hard won and that carries itself onto I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, which is infused with then-contemporary sounds and prescient subjects that were given a spotlight after a long time in the dark. The often languorous sounding compositions may drag on after a while but I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got is a deserving breakthrough that shines a light on Sinead's immense talent. Favorites: Feel So Different, I Am Stretched on Your Grave, The Emperor's New Clothes, Black Boys on Mopeds, Nothing Compares 2 U, The Last Day of Our Acquaintance, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got.
Less difficult to listen than I thought it would be, but also less political. More songs of love on here. I wouldn’t say I enjoyed any of it, but it was by no means a chore to get through. I probably would have liked this if I was a rebellious 80s teenager. The vocals are instantly iconic. Instrumentation is fine, it’s there and serves its purpose. Songwriting and production are really good. I’ll admit to liking “The Last Day of Our Acquaintance” enough to add it to my library, but then she hit me with the a cappella shit and I was not having it. 4/5
This album was really good. Her voice is so powerful and haunting. I like the way “Feel..” builds. “Emperor’s & Compares…” are the stars. Her voice is so wicked on the closer “I Do Not Want..” 1001 album worthy: 71/132
Liked it mostly, but wasn’t easy to get into.
An underrated masterpiece that was overshadowed by a single event - that later proved she was a head of her time....
3.5/5
Great album RIP Sinead
4.5?
Ironically her first album is way better than this critically praised one.
I loved this when it first came out. If it hadn't been for my affection for Ireland and the Irish I might not had been as affected by her.
This is way better then just the obvious hit. I thought I couldn’t stand listening to it again but I really enjoyed it after a long break. But the other tracks don’t need to hide behind it. They are the real stars here.
One of the best vocals ever.
Sociopolitical commentary, pop songs, and what I can only describe as Irish blues all in one accessible yet not compromising album. Lyrics are raw, unpretentious and honest. What a voice, gone too soon.
Very interesting and unique. I love Nothing Compares to You. It’s one of my favorite songs!
Hard not to think of Sinead without hear Nothing Compares in your head. And it still rules. Wasn’t as familiar with the other songs on here, but I did have the album she appeared on with the Edge (track was Heroine and hauntingly perfect for her). Love her voice and the way she could turn it from soft and delicate to wild and strong.
She was right about those catholics Hadn't heard "black boys on mopeds" before but it's a lovely song. Nothing compares remains one of the best all time love songs. Very enjoyable listen
She’s pretty good!
She's very good - there's some good tracks on here. I liked the Emperor's New Clothes. Nothing Compares 2 U is also a classic I recognized a bit.
Probably won't come back to this one but she has a beautiful voice and she was fucked over for being right about the church.
2/20/25. First time really diving into Sinead, beautiful songs and really in-depth lyrics, they really hit you. She was a little before my time so my awareness of her was from the negative press she received, but listening to this helped me think of her music first. Would recommend this to anyone.
I know “Black Boys on Mopeds” and “Nothing Compares 2 U”. Other than that I have never listed to her much. I’m on track two. I’m so disappointed this is my first time listening to this album. This is really good. At the time her image in the press deterred me.
This is such a good album. I’m surprised it took me so long to listen to Sinead O’Connor, I had never even listened to the whole of Nothing Compares 2 U before. It’s very haunting at times and has the sensation that you are reading a very personal, passionate letter that someone had written to someone who had hurt them; raw and intimate. On display are some beautiful vocals and striking lyrics, it feels quite spiritual to me sometimes. The final track, which is the title track, is gorgeous and moving. It’s a little bit whimsigoth but not overbearingly so and it sounds like Ireland, bringing with visions of beautiful Irish landscapes. If Ireland has a voice, it would sound like Sinead O’Connor.
Listened Before? N Great album. Powerful and uncompromising subject matter and beautiful voice. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Feel So Different
Probably won’t ever listen to it again but actually pretty magnetic album.
I quite liked the album. In addition to her highly emotional version of "Nothing Compares 2 U", I also liked "I Am Stretched on Your Grave" based on a 17th-century Irish poem, and "The Emperor's New Clothes".
Soft 4, better than average but let's not get crazy
Better than the Beatles
Difficult to classify Sinead O'Connor's breakthrough record. It's heavily influenced by Irish folk tradition, catholic psalms and even the emerging trip hop movement of the time. It makes the album somewhat unfocused, but with the two-hit punch of 'Black Boys on Mopeds' and 'Nothing Compares 2 U', it's tricky not to be persuaded by O'Connor's voice and storytelling.
sounded shockingly modern
3.5 stars. Didn't love it but it was good. She has a nice voice and some activist lyrics ("Black Boys On Mopeds"). Standouts were: "You Cause as Much Sorrow", her cover of Princes "Nothing Compares 2 U" which is a really heart-felt outpouring to her mom, and the acapella title track which is really pretty singing.
Thought this held up /way/ better as an album than I was expecting, with far more high spots and consistency. Hadn't listened to it through for 30 years. Really enjoyed it again.
По мнению А: 4/5 По мнению С: 5/5 ИТОГОВАЯ ОЦЕНКА: 4/5 (20.01.2025)
I dug this - my one qualm is that the over abundance of synth really dated what would otherwise be a timeless record.
Have to admit she was a really interesting person and yeah this album first time listening to it right through. Very cool
Really enjoyed this more than I thought I would
Sinead can only be described as an ethereal singer, and more of a protestor than a musician. Her voice is incredible, there's a range of different songs here, and they lyrics are meaningful. There is only one sort of hit track, but the rest of the songs were very good
Solid album.
I felt her singing didn't fit with the beat on I Am Stretched On Your Grave. The title track would have been better with more variation. The rest is good. I like her voice and the emotion she puts in.
Hauntingly beautiful.
Enjoyed this pretty well. It was actually a good listen for a bitter winter day.. It almost has a winter song feel to it. Bleek and cold while wanting to be warm. Some of the songs the just felt at odds with the rest of the album (the ones with more production to them) but overall this was a good listen. (8.2) ★★★★
If you'd asked me around track 7, I thought this might be headed towards 5 stars, but the last few tracks are kind of sleepy. Between tracks 2 and 7, I think this is a great album. "I Am Stretched on Your Grave" is cool, blending a 17th century song with a "Funky Drummer" loop. The middle section of "Three Babies", "The Emperor's New Clothes", "Black Boys on Mopeds", and "Nothing Compares 2 U" is a chef's kiss. And "Jump in the River" is another cool uptempo track. Still probably one of the best albums of 1990. 4.5 stars.
This is a really good album. Great songs that are beautifully arranged and produced. The sound is great and the singing is sublime. I was not prepared for an album of this quality. 4 stars
8/10
I did not use a private spotify session for this one. I liked this album more than I thought I would, I knew the Prince cover and the more upbeat "The Emperor's New Clothes", I was glad to hear that was an good combination of music styles and instruments that kept it interesting. Sinead's got a lovely voice that definitely adds to the tracks.
I enjoyed this.
Always had great admiration for sinead O'connor but hadn't listened to her albums. Very impressed with this. The singles were all good, emperor's new clothes more upbeat than I expected. Nothing compares is excellent. Tragic how she was treated for calling out abuse in stark contrast to some of the questionable others in this 1001 list
What an OG she is. Triple OG
Honestly. I judged a book by its cover. I really liked it. But not love lol.
The world wasn’t ready for Sinead O’Connor in the early 90’s. I’d like to think that it would be different now, but I may be wrong.
I bought this at the timeand played it to death. However listening back now it's pretty generic Production techniques and 80's drum machines. Sadly too she didn't really write many of these either. Still she was a real personality for a while back then.
Jeg havde det her album på cd! Meget nostalgisk at høre det igen. Fantastisk stemme
An incredibly emotional album, made more so by her recent passing. misunderstood and ahead of the time with her views and politics. A beautifully well structured album with 3 standout tracks in Feel so different, Three babies and Emperors New Clothes. Very very close to a perfect 5. I still want to own this album
Delicate vocals. Really liked about 75% of this. Will relisten!
Just bloody moaning - I like it!
Beautiful and furious
lion and the cobra is better, this is still quite great though imo
Positively surprised. A lot of variety on this album. The songs are a bit long but its all a pleasant listen.
Just misses the 5. Amazing voice, amazing lyricism, the instrumentation left me wanting more though
Really good. Nothing Compares 2 U of course is great, but Black Boys on Mopeds is the standout.
Always unique and angry I huess
3-4
could i write poetry to this? n
pleasant music - brilliant voice
First off: we, as a society, did this woman a disservice. We should have listened. The album, the one that made her a star in America, because of "the song", is a lot more than the one song. In fact, the vocals on "Nothing Compares 2 U" always sounded a little weird. The vocal effects... it seems to be the only song with them, it makes it sound a little alien. But the other songs on the album really showed her range, and it's a LOT. I did think the title track went a bit long, though. Top tracks: "Feel So Different," "I Am Stretched On Your Grave," "Black Boys On Mopeds," "You Cause As Much Sorrow"
Sinead gives zero f’s
Enjoyed
Operatic, deep, layered, poppy, and angelic
The 90's was quite the time for female Irish singers. I really like Sinead's voice and I think she did a good job of pairing music that matched her range and style. I can't say any individual songs blew me away, but none of them stood out as bad either. Over all a solid album that I enjoyed listening to.
Vildt album - så roligt men alligevel så kraftfuldt. Godt at sætte på for rolig aften hvor det bare skal flyde
Pretty good
Slow, sorrowful, grim, and soulful. Great songwriting, pretty solid production, and of course it has the big hit. Worth more listens. Best song: Nothing Compares 2 U
I enjoyed this much more than I expected to
Sinéad O'Connor is hard to put in words, though I think it's easy to understand nothing compares to her (I'm sorry). She was unafraid to be herself or touch upon difficult topics. Very few white musicians spoke about police brutality against Black children by 1990, but O'Connor did at 24 years old. She also covered her miscarriages and her mother's death, both of which couldn't have been easy at a young age. Her lyrics reveal her maturity and her ability to be wise beyond her years. While I have respect for O'Connor, I didn't know much of her music. To be fair, most people don't know her beyond "Nothing Compares 2 U" and her SNL controversy. I now realize what a shame that is, because while her Prince cover is outstanding, we're all missing out on her beautiful sound. She keeps the same gothic, spiritual vibes throughout. She uses strings exquisitely in "Feels So Different". Staying true to her heritage, she includes Irish sounds too. O'Connor dabbled in the folk genre, like your typical singer-songwriter, but it isn't overpowering. I even felt some Enya vibes, but O'Connor was more gloomy and not as ethereal.
Before starting this album, I reflected on whether or not I actually KNEW any of Sinead's music, beyond her very well-known cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U". And I was pretty sure I hadn't. So I was looking forward to diving in. With her fairly recent death and the background context I had surrounding her past few decades spent ostracized as a result of calling out the abuses perpetrated by the Catholic Church, I was even more ready to listen to with open ears. This woman never got the collective apology from the world that she deserved. The absolute bare minimum that people can do now is listen to her music in memoriam and consider how we (often wrongly) protect and continue to uphold harmful institutions. Regarding the album itself, it's everything I love in 90s female singer songwriter types. The vocals and the instrumentation are edgy and gritty at times. The songwriting is topical and doesn't shy away from hard topics. There's folky aspects without it being TOO folky. At times, Sinead leans into an overall dark, haunting quality (see "I Am Stretched on Your Grave" as a prime example); she is incredibly good at doing so and I absolutely was living for it. Going back to "Nothing Compares 2 U": many have covered his songs, but rarely is Prince outshined on his own source material. But who managed to accomplish that? Sinead did. Her version soars and earns its laurels, without a doubt. And still, the album achieves a lot of diversity in sound, style, and genre. Combined with the fact that she wrote, played on, arranged, and produced much of this album herself, it just cements her as a musical force, excelling beyond just her cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U".
It's an incredible powerful album, but also heavy. Her voice is second to none
It's quite an interesting and moody record. I like a lot of these tracks, and I like the whole of it. It doesn't sound dated at all and has plenty of depth and feeling to it. I think a lot of that is conveyed via her singing which I'm really impressed with. Nothing Compares 2 U is obviously brilliant, but that song more than any other highlights just how incredible her voice is. So raw and full of emotion, but also incredibly powerful. 3.5 rounded up.
Don't think I'd listen again, but it's cool as fuck
I've never liked NC2U which turned me off this album for awhile, but it's lowkey better than The Lion and The Cobra (even if there's nothing on Troy's level here. Feel So Different and Black Boys on Mopeds come close though). 3.5/5
Very pretty voice
Beautiful, haunting album.
I’m familiar with Sinead’s hits, but for some reason had never listened to a full album beginning to end. I’m so glad I finally did, and how awesome to listen again to The Last Day of Our Acquaintance, The Emperor’s New Clothes, Black Boys on Mopeds, and, of course, her gut wrenching rendition of Nothing Compares to You. Awesome album!
belting voice and a super iconic song
I own this album. I haven't listened to this album in a while and I wasn't sure it would hold up, but the raw emotions still shine through and her voice sounds as unique and impactful as ever. All of the upbeat songs work as do most of the ballads. "Everyone can see what's going on They laugh 'cause they know they're untouchable Not because what I said was wrong Whatever it may bring I will live by my own policies I will sleep with a clear conscience I will sleep in peace"
When this album came up I was a little disappointed and thought "oh that Prince song with the overplayed video of the close up and the tear." BUT, I liked this album more than expected. That beautiful fierce voice with that gorgeous Irish accent! She definitely wears it all on her sleeve (no pun intended with The Emperor's New Clothes). Especially liked I am Stretched on Your Grave and Last Day of Our Acquaintance. "How could I possibly know what I want when I was only 21?"
I had heard Nothing Compares 2U and the Emperor's New Clothes but not any of the rest of the album before. I listened multiple times and liked it more and more each time. Good music, blending Irish characteristics with deeply felt emotions.
Nothing compares 2 u
Interesting album, first track and Nothing Compares 2 U are great. Low 4.
4.5
Esta bueno, i lover her soft voice. 7/10
8.5/10 I get the hype
This album is amazing. It keeps it somber and heartfelt while also managing to venture into many different genres. While Sinead O’Connor is praised for her rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U, it pales in comparison to the beautiful melodies of Feel So Different, the power of I Am Stretched On Your Grave, or the lyrical wonders of Three Babies, just to give some examples. This album is beautiful and daring from start to finish, but I fear three isn’t much replay ability in some of the longer, slower songs. Definitely worth at least one listen.
Made an impression, mostly very positive. Although genuine, at times it was a bit mawkish, but great singing, heartfelt lyrics, lovely simple instrumentation. A few tracks felt a bit Christmas carol-y, but I like that.
powerful, interesting, in trance
Shame what happened to her. One of those artists who will only be fully appreciated posthumously. Favorites were "I Am Stretched on Your Grave", "The Emperor's New Clothes", and "Nothing Compares 2 U"
Good record. Great and fascinating voice. Not into every song, but the music had good variability.
Great album, vocals are in their own stratosphere obviously. I liked “I am stretched on your grave” and the rest was enjoyable. I was not familiar with a lot of this outside of “compares 2 you”. Probably considered sacrilege to S.O. Purists, but there is a great acoustic cover of nothing compares to you on YouTube by Chris Cornell.
While I’m a bigger fan of her debut The Lion and The Cobra, this album really represented her voice well and brought it to the forefront as a true instrument. It’s impossible to hear her voice and not be moved to some sort of emotion. There’s a nice variety of songs here, but I Am Stretched On Your Grave and The Last Day of Our Acquaintance were always my favorite tracks.
Very political and personal, and very sad, yet never silly or pedantic or maudlin (which, for an album with titles like “I Am Stretched on Your Grave,” ya gotta hand it to her). It’s a high form of artistry, and these songs have stayed pleasantly stuck in my head for many a year.
So good. What a kinetic and committed artist. What dynamic power as a vocalist, too, even if you feel she's holding something back at times, or at least not oversinging. The politics may be a be naive but her heart is everywhere in the right place, from the social protest to the more confessional bits. And while the register can feel a bit too consistent, almost constrained, it all works well and effective and it's tricky diverse. From sexual ecstasy in a cemetery (what would Keats think?) to "Black Boys on Mopeds" (Ross Gay would agree!) to the subtle-strong "Emperor's New Clothes." Substantive and terrific.
Such a wonderful voice which can give you the gamut of emotions from A-Z and back again. Such a beleaguered life and didn’t have the career she deserved. This was a revelatory album from a tower of talent. Personal resonance too as one of her music videos was filmed on a canal bridge near my house, long since knocked down. She also used to live in the same road as my GP surgery and wrote her name in some wet concrete outside her house so she felt very present to me at the time. RIP Sinead!
This was my first time listening to this. I dug it, though I do think it's a bit uneven. But the bangers are frigging great. The Last Day of Our Acquaintance always gets stuck in my head for days and I was kind of surprised it wasn't the last track on the album. She def should have swapped the last two songs. Anyway, glad I heard it. Will listen again. And I'm sorry she had should a tough time of it. She deserved way better.
A solid 3, but Nothing Compares elevates the whole thing to a 4.
"The Emperor's New Clothes is my all time favourite Sinead O'Connor track. Other standouts are the Prince-penned "Nothing Compares 2 U" and "Boys on Black Mopeds." The other songs are worth listening to for their level of wildly intimate confession. Much of this reminded me of early, but very stripped down Björk.
Never listened to Sinead O'Connor beyond Nothing Compares 2 U before. Very nice album from someone with an unbelievable voice. Definitely liked some songs much more than others but still a very enjoyable album. Fav tracks: Nothing Compares 2 U, The Emperor's New Clothes, Black Boys on Mopeds
Surprisingly pop-ish. Great vocals.
Beautiful
This is really great album, I certainly didn't appreciate the entire album when it was released as I did later in life. Obviously her voice is the highlight but the music on this album is also very good and provides such a rich background on many tracks.
A pretty strong record that I didn’t love at the time because it moved her toward the mainstream after the BRILLIANT record The Lion and the Cobra. But it’s quite good and her vocals still shine.
Surprised me. I only knew her one song. I liked her voice. This was a good listen
Listening to "I Am Stretched on Your Grave" when suddenly... funky drummer! This groove really is everywhere "Jump in the River" is a great night driving song Title track is hauntingly beautiful, carried 100% by the emotion in her voice
First time I really listened to this album, and I like what I hear; with the exception of "I Am Stretched On Your Grave", which was a bit tedious. The rest is a very good mixture of styles ranging from Pop and Folk all the way to Alternative with a Punk twist. The material is very mature and varied, making for a great album. 4/5
I’ve been torn about this one. Is it a 4 or a 5? Nothing Compares 2 U makes my hairs stand up. Her voice is beautiful. Not sure I would ever be listening to this regularly though. So I think it’s got to be a 4
i have so much respect for sinead. one badass woman. i dont see myself listening to this casually but i can appreciate it for what it is and what she did as an artist and individual.
This album was simultaneously exactly what I expected while also being a bit of a surprise that I did enjoy it. Some of the production sounds a little 80's and probably doesn't hold up as well. The slower songs therefore can drag a bit but are also those that sound timelier. "The Emperor's New Clothes" is a good example of a song that has a bit of an 80's production, but is otherwise a good song. Bookending the album with essentially acapella songs is the sign of a very confident artist and that's probably not a huge surprise given Sinead O'Connor's public image. This is a good album and I don't know why I expected it to be a little weirder and a little less accessible. Obviously, "Nothing Compares 2 U" is the draw but "Feels So Different," "I am Stretched on your Grave," and "Last Day of Our Acquaintance" are really good songs as well.
Beautiful voice and such a great album. Sinead is sorely missed and he voice is so unique.
A fantastic voice and some excellent tracks make this a solid listen. Really liked Three Babies, Black Boys on Mopeds, and Jump in the River. Got some Kate Bush vibes.
Much better than I expected. I really liked the more upbeat "rockers". She had me up until the last song, which was terrible.
I was not sure what to expect from this album but it certainly exceeded my expectations. There is an interesting fusion of so many genres! Some things I hear: new wave, rock, pop, hip hop drums, classical arrangements and celtic melodies. This is an eclectic album but still pretty cohesive which I always find impressive. I thought the production was great. I loved the drums in "I Am Stretched on Your Grave" (is this one of the first times hip hop drums are used in a white artist's pop record given that it is 1990?). The songs ranged from the personal to the political and she did not hold back in either of these themes which made the songs pretty interesting. For instance, the assault on British racism in "Black Boys on Mopeds" was striking in how direct it was (and how sadly relevant it still is 30 years later). There was no hiding behind metaphors there. I did absolutely hate "I do not Want what I haven't got". That song was just too long to be fully a capella with no vocal harmonies. Her voice was good, but not good enough for that. I was really enjoying the album until that happened and it is a clear contender for worst final track we've heard so far. Overall though a unique and well executed album.
Really really great stuff. I enjoyed it. Shew as right when she ripped the picture of the pope in have on SNL.
She has a haunting quality about her voice. It’s a shame she got scapegoated for her pushback against pervert priests. Personal preference here though—I wasn’t a fan then and still not. I can never envision her smiling, happy or vibrant. But she had a unique voice and talent. Glad to at least have listened to her album.
Mostly brilliant
Beautiful
You made a beautiful album. RIP
Lovely voice, but I get the feeling I being lectured, even gently. Not really to my taste.
Good example of alty, enamoured lyrics. Excellent vocals
Brilliant voice. Dark album but excellent. Listened to this back in the 90's and just as good now
A classic album - good to listen to it here
“Young mother down at Smithfield 5 am, looking for food for her kids In her arms she holds three cold babies And the first word that they learned was “please” That’s the saddest as shit verse of all time perhaps. NC2U is the visible tune on this one, but there’s much more than this hit to Sinead’s second and breakthrough album. Opening up with the Serenity Prayer on Feel so Different, it’s a tremendous, emotionally heavy record. I Am Stretched On Your Grave previews trip hop. The Emperor’s New Clothes is an oddly upbeat song with very downbeat lyrics. Black Boys on Mopeds opens with daggers thrown at Thatcher, and lyrics that reminds me of a few songs that came out in America following George Floyd. Sinead was perfect for singing Nothing Compares 2 U, and it’s a pretty perfect rendition and a massive hit for good reason. It’s odd though that I always picture Prince rather than Sinead when I hear this song. The album ends strong with Last Day of Our Acquaintance and the brilliant a cappella I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, which showcases Sinead’s brilliant vocals. While it’s not an album I come back to a lot, it’s easy to see why it was such a big hit and it’s a high quality album from beginning to end. It must have been a huge influence on the likes of Fiona Apple and (I think in a weird way) Billie Eilish.
This is a wonderful record. I only knew “Nothing Compares 2 U” and I wish I had given the whole thing more of a chance earlier. Ethereal, moody, and really political. Really relevant even today.
This is an album that's on the border between 3 and 4 stars, like so many other "7 out of 10" albums. I usually round those down -- 4 star albums should not be common -- but there's something about this one. Some of the non-hits ("Black Boys on Mopeds", "Three Babies") are just a little better than what's on some of the other "7 out of 10" albums. And the voice certainly helps. Powerful. 4 stars.
I really do feel like such a terrible singer when trying to sing along to Nothing Compares 2 U. O’Connor’s voice is both haunting and smooth as glass and this album is more than just the standout. 4 stars
Sorry Eric, solid 4
nice, 4 stars
Onpa vahva tunnelma! Kliseinen sanapari mutta kuvaa tätä albumia erinomaisesti. Suorastaan vangitsee kuuntelemaan. Hieno äänimaailma taustalla, kuulostaa koneista huolimatta orgaaniselta, puhdas rauhallinen laulu viimeistelee sitovasti, on pääosassa mutta tilaa antavasti. Joo, muutenkin on tilaa. Vois mennä ajan kanssa mulla vitoseen asti.
4+/5
A historic album that provided a voice that would spark a wild controversy. Unfairly dismissed at the time but has proven to be a timeless classic.
phew damn, sometimes there’s albums that aren’t really my genre, and then there’s albums that aren’t really my genre done by someone so undeniably talented I get swept up in it all the same
A good album with my favorite song being the famous Nothing Compares 2 U. I also liked The Emperor's New Clothes and I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got.
One of this century’s greatest voices
I'll say this wasn't quite what I expected going in only having previously been exposed to Nothing Compares 2 U. This was more experimental and exposed sounding with certain songs similar in tone to early Bjork (Feel so Different, Last Day of Our Acquaintance). Also can safely say that I did not expect to encounter the same drum sample that Sublime used on their rendition of Scarlet Begonias on here. I always assumed that was something Sublime made themselves -- TIL its actually a James Brown song. I really enjoy Sinead's moody take here on I Am Stretched on Your Grave. Nothing Compares 2 U is the one I've heard before -- a fine very 90s sounding synth ballad. Otherwise some solid stuff in here. High 3 to low 4. Giving the nudge because I actually would like to give it another play through.
i just love her, sublime album, haunting vocals, political when it has to be, she's built different. the only thing it's the feeling of her voice outshining the rest of the composition, but it's ok.
I started to listen to her during the pandemic and have been impressed by her whole body of work. She definitely wasn’t treated fairly and should have a had a better career.
I knew Nothing Compares 2 U, the shaved scalp and the torn picture of the pope, the political controversy, so Ms. O'Connor's was a familiar name, but I had never heard the album. She is a skilled singer with a great voice. There's a nice variety of pace, texture and style in these tracks from the nearly choral to rockier electric arrangements. And there's political edge - Black Boys on Mopeds is a scathing condemnation spoken in motherly simplicity. On par with Springsteen's 49 Shots. It's a good album. It's a good listen.
90/ poignant listen.
This feels like an important album. So much statement, protest, and force of will by Sinead O’Connor her whole life. I loved the melancholy major/minor interplay with a surprising mixture of musical styles. A lovely album! Three and a half rounded up.
Favourite song(s): "Three Babies", "The Emperor's New Clothes", "Black Boys on Mopeds", "Nothing Compares 2 U". Obviously i heard "Nothing Compares 2 U" and didn't expect everything from this album, after first two songs i want to drop it and give just 1/5, but then 4 absolutly BANGERS, gosh i nearly give a tear listening to all them. Sinead's voice is so beautiful and amazing. If there wasn't first two songs and track 10, i would've give this album an easy 5/5, but gonna lower it to 4/5. First time on this list, that the unknown album is stuck with me.
I never listened to sinead in the 90s. I clearly was wrong about her sound. This is really great.
A real one, RIP Sinead. Never heard this album before - not quite what I expected (in a good way!) only knowing Nothing Compares.
A rare case where I liked the lyrics enough to round up to 4 stars. Nothing Compares 2 U might be one of my less favorites on the album? Really liked I Am Stretched On Your Grave (using a James Brown Funky Drummer sample looped over the words to a 17th century Irish poem… inspired), The Emperor’s New Clothes, Black Boys on Mopeds (!!!!), and Last Day Of Our Acquaintance.
Enjoyed this, Sinead gives great vocal performances and insightful lyrics.
Loved "I am Stretched on Your Grave" and will always love "Nothing Compares 2 U." Beautiful voice.
There's much more to this album than one overplayed hit single, which is certainly more than can be said of a lot of these albums. Though I wasn't always into what was happening, there was clear vision and good execution across the album.
4.25
Good! Better than having hair? No.
Sensitive and touching… and that beautiful interpretation of a Prince masterpiece, stunning. I do really regret not fully appreciating her greatness while she was here.
This is a really great album. Such incredible vocals.
Kinda vibes in a slightly folky way, not something I usually listen to but enjoyed once again
Enjoyed the emotion in the singing and lyrics a lot.
She had such a great voice :'(
To the best of my knowledge, I only know one Sinead song, and it’s exactly the one you’d expect. It is a banger though, to be fair. I’ve never looked into any more of her music, so today is a good opportunity! Songs I already knew: Nothing Compares 2 U Favourites: Nothing Compares 2 U, The Emperor’s New Clothes In a way, it seems a bit of a shame that Nothing Compares 2 U got so big, as it outshines the other songs here which are still very nice in their own right. Some is as you’d expect from the one song we know, but she also occasionally dips her toes into rock too. Her voice is lovely, complimenting every track here with ease. This isn’t my kind of album, but I can definitely appreciate it.
Hat mir gut gefallen 4.0
This is definitely not my type of music, but her voice and singing along with interesting melancholic chord progressions manages to carry the whole album, so I think it comes down to whether you like that or not. The rest of the musical parts are not particularly interesting, and furthermore that part hasn't aged very well with the quite boring drum parts, for example. This has quite a few years on it's back now, but there is definitely a loudness issue with this album. It is probably intentional, but many of the songs are so quiet it's hard to hear what she's singing (and whether she actually is singing).
Excellent vocals with a warm feeling throughout.Obviously her cover of nothing compares to u is the stand out track but the rest of the album is solid.
Essential Tracks: Nothing Compares 2 U Feels So Different I Am Stretchered On Your Grave
4.2
This album was a pleasant surprise for me, as I only knew O'Connor from her hit cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U", which is one of those rare cases where the cover surpasses the original. But this album is much more than that. It is a haunting and atmospheric example of alternative rock, with some hard-hitting songs that touch on personal and social issues. O'Connor sings about her miscarriages in "Three Babies", and about racism and police brutality in Britain in "Black Boys on Mopeds". O'Connor's voice is powerful and emotional, and the music is often sparse and simple, creating a contrast between the intensity of her vocals and the simplicity of the arrangements. The album shows O'Connor's courage and honesty as a singer-songwriter, and her ability to create beautiful and memorable melodies. This album is not an easy listen, but it is a rewarding one. It is one of the best alternative rock albums of the 90s, and I would give it 4 stars out of 5.
Ó svo fallegt
4. I found this album enjoyable
I can understand why people like Sinead O'Connor's music - her style is unique: it's pop with a gothic feel with topics from staples like love to everyday life to radically political. I just think it all sounds a bit sleepy.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Feels so different, Nothing compares 2 u, You cause as much sorrow
Pretty great album. It doesn't resonate with me as much as I feel it should but she was clearly a massive talent. RIP
R.I.P. to Sinead, such a wonderful record
I was positively surprised by this album. Next to the famous 'Nothing Compares 2 U' there are many other styles in music here that sound quite timeless but still somewhat root it in the 1990s. In that respect, O'Connor's album is closer to the soulful tracks of Massive Attack. I enjoyed it!
I always thought about Sinead O'Connor as someone much more important for her political positions and beliefs spread by her in the interviews and profiles rather than by her music. This increased a lot after she recently passed away. Now, when I listen to this very important album, I can see how much wrong I was. Besides any polemic or any opinion, I listened to a great singer and a very nice musical work. Wikipedia credits her also for the string arrangements in some songs, and it attests even more to her artistic talent. From now on, I'll keep her life story in mind, but even more than this, her extreme talent.
Good but not the best.
I bought her first album but didn't get this one. The Prince song really helped her career. Her SNL appearance - not so much. She was ahead of her time in calling out the church for all it's bullshit and cover ups and I have a lot of respect for that. I just don't think people really understood what her message was until it was way too late. RIP.
I had forgotten just how good this album is. It's hard to imagine that she was only 24 yrs old when she did this, every song is very different, yet they are all so passionately performed and so cohesive. Unfortunately she recently passed away too early and I don't think she got enough recognition for her huge talent, no doubt it was because of all the bad press she undeservedly got after the SNL Pope episode that resulted in her being persona non grata for so long. I am stretched out on your grave must have been such an innovative drum and bass track back in 1990 and the violin playing the Irish jig at the end wraps it up so nicely. So many great songs here, it's a shame that the limelight is hogged by Nothing Compares 2 U, but even though its overplayed, it still retains its emotional power to this day. I originally went in thinking 3 stars, but after listening to this twice I'm giving this is a very strong 4 stars and its almost a 5.
What a beautiful voice and charming songs… it’s a shame what happened to her. Her life was a tragedy. Thanks for the music, Sinead
Actually great. Only thing that let's it down is the sudden fiddly-dee
