Reviews (page 5 of 7)
It's very good. But it's got some standout tracks and great listening but I'm not putting it on often.
3.5, definitely a good album. especially love the single, will have to revisit
Too mellow for the gym
A solid 3.5. I see maybe some influence for “ Alanis later from this album? Could maybe bump to a 4 but some of the songs were a little slow for me.
16/08/25 - morning 3.5/5 Big fan of nothing compares 2 u and the tracks at either side of it. I found some of the lyricism to be moving. However, the album did not take up that much with me.
I liked this a lot more than I expected to - not sure why I had that perception I might not like it. I don’t think this will ever be in my high rotation but still excellent.
I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got: know it well as we had it on CD in Haverhill. Liked it back then and still like it (other than title cut.) Entire album is real good other than last song. She maybe went a little to far, to fast. L = (3.0*s) She deserves all the awards that she didn’t accept. J = (3.3*s) Emperor’s New Clothes should be on my playlist.
Intense. Musically varied, lyrically heavy.
Tough First track. But very strong. Liked track 2. Especially the combination between the beat and the celtic tones towards the end. 3 is more quiet and less exiting but still has great vocal moments from sinead. 4 has a classic rock style. 5 is political poetic and acoustic. Quit a special song. Nothing compared to you needs no introduction. I'll just say that it is the best version by a mile. Sinead's ability to express herself vocaly shines here. Track 7 is another classic rock 8 is more of a ballad. Both nice songs. 8 better. I like a lot the progression on song 9. Great track. A strong a capella to seal it. Very strong. It's an interesting album. I have to respect Sinead for the vision and courage in making a very "uncomunicative" album. It really works most of the time. I have to put some thought in ranking it.
Lovely voice, but I don’t think I’d listen to it again.
3.3
Standout Songs: The Emperor’s New Clothes Nothing Compares 2 U Jump in the River
Good. Nothing Compares 2U is a classic. The rest always seemed like something I’d live but never really played.
The first song made me think that this was going to be some folksy singer-songwriter music with some Irish influence, and while there is some of that on this album, there's also plenty of songs with some up-tempo rock adjacent vibes. I don't think either is particularly better than the other. Her voice is pretty incredible. Without her vocal talent, I think this ends up being a really forgettable album, but I think this album does a great job of centering itself on her. Yeah, it's a good, maybe borderline great album, in my opinion. I don't think, besides her voice, that there's really much that elevates this album for me, even lyricism or style or anything. Favorite Song(s): Nothing Compares 2 U, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got
It's just fine. Nothing good to point out, nothing bad to point out
First impression pre listen: As much of a cultural icon as she is, I don't think I've ever heard more than one song from her (you know the one) so this will at least be new to me. From what I can tell, this one might be a bit of a downer. I'm just hoping it's at least engaging and not too slow. Don't really know what to expect from this, so it could go either way. Individual track notes: Feel so Different The lyrics are very striking. Her voice seems full of resentment. The instrumental helps build an atmosphere which really complements the seriousness of the lyrical themes. Not very entertaining, but the vocal performance has enough emotion and boldness to it that it at least kept my attention. Fine. 3/5 I Am Stretched on Your Grave What a title... Don't really like how the drums are mixed. Too forward and too loud, distracts from rather than compliments the vocals. I like the folkiness of the vocals, sounds very traditional. Fits with the song's origin. Great storytelling. I find the fiddle at the end unecessary, overcomplicating the song and lessening its impact. Average. 2.5/5 Three Babies Very pretty atmosphere. Sounds sincere and personal. The strings are a soothing and complimenting addition. Eye catching lyrics. Fantastic vocal performance. Decent. 3.5/5 The Emperor's New Clothes A bit of a sonic whiplash. A bit anticlimatic, never feels like the buildup amounts to anything. The chorus just does nothing for me. I guess the lyrics are very distinct, leaving it at least sounding original. Drags a bit. Average. 2.5/5 Black Boys on Mopeds Thatcher's a cunt, England sucks, children are starving and cops are racist, what else is new? Perhaps brave at the time, but I've heard it before. At least she delivers the message quite strikingly, and the lyrics are set up in quite the poethic fashion. Fine. 3/5 Nothing Compares 2 U The way the title is spelled pisses me off for some irrational reason. I guess it's a bit of a "Princeism". Maybe I'm just numb to it from it being played so much, but I really didn't get much out of it. Her voice is absolutely stunning, and she fully transforms the song with her emotional take on it. For what was supposed to be a highlight on the album, I just ended up feeling a bit apathetic towards it. There's nothing wrong with it, but I just don't like it that much. Fine. 3/5 Jump in the River I like the rougher instrumental. Some cool lyrical ideas here. Don't got much more to say. Fine. 3/5 You Cause as Much Sorrow Really compelling lyrics, the chorus hits very hard. Great buildup. Love her delivery. Simple and sweet. Decent. 3.5/5 Last Day of our Acquaintance What a title... Kind of boring though easy to follow. The instrumental switchup is a pretty cool idea I suppose. Average. 2.5/5 I Do Not Have What I Haven't Got Really echoey, I don't think it achieves the intended effect. Makes me feel uncomfortable and claustrophobic. I appreciate the poetry of the song, though the spirituality is completely lost on me. I don't have the patience for this, sorry. Boring, though I understand it's a very personal track. Dislike. 2/5 Final review: Her lyrics are good, and her voice is stellar, both carrying a wealth of emotion and power. Aside from a few production choices the album was mostly fine. However I didn't relate much to it, leaving me feeling like I'm not the intended audience for it. This left me feeling kinda ambivalent to the whole ordeal. Even if she's exceptional at expressing her experiences with religion, loss and era appropriate politics It's just not clicking for me. I am simply not informed enough about many of the subjects on here to comment about them. However even when that it's the case, this was a pleasant enough listen to find some enjoyment in. It's well arranged, decently paced and surprisingly varied. There's tunes inspired by folk, rock and pop, and she's versatile enough to not feel like out of place in any of the genres. Her voice is varied, and I really like how she channels anger, resentment and sorrow into it. I also appreciate how pleasant and accessible the album is, which makes it really easy to dial in on the nuances and details in her performance. Overall I'd say I'm glad I've listened through it, even if I didn't fully get it. 3/5
That voice that defined a generation of teenage heartbreak…
Her voice is pretty great, but the album was slow and dragged some of the time.
Gorgeous and haunting vocals
Pretty good! The Emperor's New Clothes bangs, I don't really feel the hype for Nothing Compares 2 U, tho.
Good listen.
Passionate and intimate
Nothing compares 2 U is an all time classic, but I didn’t feel like the rest played to her talent.
It's interesting, but lost interest after about 5 songs
Better than expected, or maybe about the same. Don't see myself coming back to this one... just not my preferred style.
Powerful voice. Music with a true purpose to change the world. She was so heavily criticized and turns out she was speaking the truth. Album is good, but a little too slow for me. 3.5/5 Might listen again
I had no idea how political this *checks notes* woman who ripped up a picture of the pope was
This is overall a pretty chill album, nothing too exciting. The most popular song here was Nothing Compare 2 U, but the rest were just a bit alright, so they were fine being in the background.
The sum is greater than the parts
Great voice and a very distinct look and vibe. The amount of background strings and orchestral work to support her singing is great. I listened to this three times because I was worn on how to look at it. It's clearly personal but it's a protest album at times. Interesting album and worth having on the list for sure. I'm still not quite sure what to make of it and I think that's saying something about why it is worth a listen.
I've heard Nothing Compares 2U before but not much else. She has a great voice and this album is like a sample platter. The tracks don't really mesh together. The lyrics and instrumentation aren't that deep, but yeah her voice is something special. I Am Stretched on Your Grave, scared me for a second, thinking a bad rap was coming. Instead it was an interesting use of a break beat. Like they were trying to replace a Bodhrán beat with an of the time break beat. Anyway this didn't really stick with me, but I wouldn't mind revisiting it.
It’s the one with nothing compares on it
Gorgeous vocals, but i wish there were more punchy moments. Not that any song on here is bad, but it gets a little tiring
Intellectually I know this is unfair, but because her pain from trauma is so apparent it makes me too sad while listening to this. There are a few songs that are among my favourites. But as an album it almost becomes too much. 3.5/5
I met Sinéad once She offered me a cigarette I was 12… Questionable methods of introducing yourself to a minor aside, this is a pretty good album wrapped in a longer, less good album. NC2U is obviously a masterpiece. Not a cover so much as an utter emotional reinvention. And Sinead’s voice is obviously very fine indeed But there is a certain samey ness to a lot of these that drags it down a bit
Pointing out the obvious first, she has an amazing voice. Overall the album has the one unbelievable track and the rest is pretty good but never comes close to matching it. I did enjoy it but at the same time I couldn’t see myself listening to it all the way through again. Top Track - Cliche time, Nothing Compares 2 U
Pretty decent with chill, relaxing vibes that are enjoyable in the background
I have low expectations heading into this album. Starting with the Serenity Prayer is adding to my sense that this album is going to take itself way too seriously. I bet this is the album that made Fiona Apple decide she wanted to make music. Bjork too. I Am Stretched On Your Grave is a techno poem. It would be better if the beat and glass breaking sounds were toned down a bit. She does have a lovely Irish voice. Three Babies showcases how great she sounds when it's basically her voice just shining. The Emperor's New Clothes is the most 90s song I've ever heard. It could be the music for the opening titles of a 90s girl power movie. Black Boys on Mopeds is the simple political polemic I was waiting for on this album. And the inescapable hit, Nothing Compares 2 U. Well deserved though. A great song written by Prince and knocked absolutely out of the park here. An album very much of it's time. Other than Nothing Compares 2 U, there are some good songs and some bad songs but it's a decent album as a whole.
She has a nice singing voice but whenever I wasnt paying full attention, I kinda forgot it was on and had to relisten to the same songs multiple times
A strong voice, but often grating to me. At other times it forceful and adds great emotion and strength to her songwriting. Unfortunately, her music comes off as a bit to self indulgent for my tastes.
3/5. I recognize her talent, but it’s just not for me. I sampled each song, but didn’t listen all the way through.
She has a beautiful voice - Nothing Compares 2U is the obvious standout, but Black Boys on Mopeds is great too, and several other songs have much to recommend. It does fall a little short in that it lacks much of a centre - I want to hear more of her passion and anger, and the album is just a bit flat in places. Mid to high 3.
Favorit Three Babies Nothing compares 2 u You cause as much sorrow I am streched on your Grave
The lack of autotune is a joy, but the vocals often suffer from something muddying them - reverb/double tracking/chorus/buried in the mix? The drums on Nothing Compares are awful through headphones. Black Boys on Mopeds … oof! Jump in the River … is like a lifeless studio punk teenage kicks, though I think I’d enjoy a Helen Love cover. What it really needs is more sympathetic production/producer (looks up producer and it was O’Connor herself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) . I image an unplugged version would be much better. I’m very glad to have listened to it.
Solid, but I didn't connect with this one. maybe another listen down the line may do it.
It was... alright. The Celtic fiddle breakdown in track 2 was by far the best part, but I'd rather just listen to Clannad for that sort of thing. Favorite Track: I Am Stretched on Your Grave
I don't know. There's something about the opening statement that is well intended. Yet from there on in, I can't shake the feeling that there a wee bit of pretentiousness going on. But there are some nice musical moments scattered throughout.
Sineads classic is a classic the rest is alright maybe in a cafe smoking lucky strikes and drinking cheap shit coffee. Wondering where it all went wrong. She was a ledge
If only Sinead had got a pound for every time someone said "Actually, I think you'll find, Nothing Compares 2U was a Prince song." That and The Emperor's New Clothes stood out. The rest was very wishy washy,
Feeling pretty indifferent about this one. Everything great about O’Connor is present here; folk tinged with reflective and socially conscious lyrics. Vocals are good across all tracks but don’t quite match the brilliance of “Nothing Compares 2 U”. I found the instrumentation boring, there are moments of lush strings and punchy drums but it’s not enough for me. 2.5/5
I forget that she is kind of a folk singer and I’m not a huge folk person but her voice is beautiful and I love the 90’s sound on some of these songs
3.02
she had a pretty voice and she could open her heart but really it’s just that one song, right?
First time listening to her and I liked it for the most part. The upbeat songs had a nice sound and reminded me of The Thermals. Very thoughtful lyrics. I liked Three Babies and The Emperor's New Clothes.
Somehow both not as good as I expected and better than how I thought it’d be. I’d only heard Nothing Compares 2 U, and that song gives me flashbacks to a blur of a trip to Manila where for some reason it seemed to be playing everywhere. That last track, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, taught me that just because you don’t have a drum kit with you, or a piano, or a guitar, that doesn’t mean that I don’t want it. Sure, her voice is beautiful, and this track is almost a study for how long a good voice can sustain interest. But since there’s little complexity and pretty stupid/bad lyrics, I found myself getting so impatient. Even angry. So I was glad when the song was over. That’s not a good place to be.
This is a very strong album. Not sure I've heard it in full before. High 3s.
good album overall, had some decent tracks
Definitely not a dime a dozen. I usually don't like music like this, but there's a certain tension on this record that makes it more interesting. I don't like all songs. Favorite song: three babies
It's interesting alternative folk/ pop, but it's still not my genre of choice. I do appreciate that there's a lot of different sounds and tones. Feel So Different is a strong opener, but there's some songs like Emperor's New Clothes that just fail to grab me. Nothing Compares 2 U is also a great song, though I cannot tell if I like the Prince original or this one more. I think the hook is stronger in Sinead's. It's a fine album, but not my personal favorite by any means.
She's doin' somethin', I just don't know what it is. Ok, well, actually, some of this is a bit more traditional. I'll get this out of the way: Black boys on mopeds is great, but nothing compares 2 u sucks. I'm tempted to bump it up to a 4 because of the kind of ethereal sounding thread that moves through the album but really I don't see anything special here. Wouldn't hate to hear it again.
Great voice, ok songs, painful production
one of those albums where you know one day it will absolutely click for you
Beautiful voice and an album of interesting contrasts from a tragic and polarizing artist. This is not particularly my jam, but it is solid. Any time a track from this album comes on, my wife will inevitably tell us about how she did a family Euro trip in her teens and this was the only tape she had with her, basically soaking in the angst on repeat for three weeks. I can't imagine this experience but is sounds grueling. She turned out OK. Haha.
Some great songs on here but maybe too many songs that sound like airy album closers. (31 known/62 new)
Sinead O’Connor was such a controversial figure back in the 1990s. When she ripped the picture of the pope live on the air, the world gasped. Today, most people, especially younger, have no idea what SNL or the Pope is. Now that the controversy is gone, it’s easy to look at her music with a different perspective. I respect the way that she was able to combine traditional Irish ballads with pop music. Her voice was both lilting and powerful simultaneously like on the song Nothing Compares to you, which we couldn’t get off the radio even if you wanted to. I Do Not Want is angelic. Black. It’s on Mopeds is soulful. But I think my favorite song is I Am Stretched on Your Grave, which is lyrically powerful and catchy as hell. There was a lot of torment and talent in Sinead. I hope she has now found peace.
Random thoughts: * There was a bit more touch of Irish than I expected on this album. * I heard a theory that "Nothing Compare 2 U" is about Sinead's mom to her. Couple that with "You Cause As Much Sorrow" and I think she was definitely working through some things with the death of her mother. * The closer is a beautiful song and shows off her incredible voice. * Glad I listened to this and would happily listen again but I won't be choosing this one again on my own.
3.5
I like this whole album. I should have bought this in 1990.
This was surprisingly slight for a record that features the legendary "Nothing Compares 2 U." Her soaring vocals on that song are remarkable, and I did enjoy the social commentary on "Black Boys on Mopeds." But I felt the songs themselves and the instrumentation on the rest of the album was pretty stale.
This almost feels like a proto bjork/portishead style album. She has a great voice and the instrumentation is pretty straightforward but a good complement to her voice. Lots of variation and some experiments go better than other (baroque/chamber pop, soft rock, singer songwriter touch ups)
Honestly DNF. I’m just going to give it 3 stars because I didn’t hate what I listened to, but it was just way too slow for me, wasn’t my mood at all.
At first I thought it was going to be pretty bad but it locked into a groove and that cover of nothing compares 2 u, is out of this world
Some nice tunes on a rather mixed up album
I don’t know how many of you were alive when Sinead O’Connor tore up a photo of the pope on SNL in protest of the Catholic church’s cover up child sexual abuse, but people lost their damn minds over it. Not because of the child abuse part of it, but because she tore up a picture of the pope. She was turned into a villain immediately. Some people were seething with rage about it. I was 11 when that happened and I thought it was ridiculous then, because it was wild to see people in a country that was built on the premise of freedom of speech lose their minds because someone exercised it. I might have been too smart for my own good as child. O’Connor was banned from ever performing on Saturday Night Live again, and the following week, Joe Pesci who was hosting the show, basically said he would’ve smacked her for tearing up the photo. Madonna later mocked her for it. Her career was basically over for saying something that we all know to be a fact now. Sinead O’Connor’s music isn’t necessarily for me, but I enjoyed this record and I respect that she spoke truth to power, even if it had severe repercussions on her career. She was right and she was threatened and ridiculed for it. There are a lot of people out there who probably should’ve apologized to her, but it’s unfortunately too late now.
I feel like every track starts out and I don't love it but by the end I'm like "damn okay." I don't love the last track but overall this is a good record.
Such powerful lyrics. It's not the type of thing I'd go back and listen to much but I really respect it.
This album would have been great about 4 years ago after my last hard breakup. As it is, it's not my favorite Sinead O'Connor album, but still pretty good stuff
It’s alright. Don’t really want to give it another listen
Quite surprising - I didn’t expect songs like Emperor’s New Clothes and Jump in the River. I expected Nothing Compares 2 U, and then nine sad (perhaps political) ballads. The latter of which is not my thing, (I also don’t want to seem like a defender of Thatcher’s Northern Ireland policy, but it’s hardly comparable to the Tiananmen Square massacre). That being said, I really like the punk elements of this album and it would’ve scored another point or two from me if the whole record was more ‘Jump in the River’ and less ‘Black Boys on Mopeds’.
The vocal production felt weird to me at first, but once I got used to it, this was a pretty good listen. I especially liked the song ‘Black Boys on Mopeds’. Super powerful and a really good performance. However, there just wasn’t enough else that stuck out to me.
Two bonus points for Nothing Compares 2 U. That song changed so much. The rest of the album is window dressing around that gem.
3/5
I know Sinead and know that I was singing a lot of her tracks as a kid via the radio. These first couple songs give me a Bjork vibe. A little soft for my liking. Definitely respect what she delivers and always thought she was a great singer/artist. RIP
Einmalige Stimme und ein Hammersong. Der Rest ist hörbar ohne Highlights
ok. A bit boring but some decent stuff and her voice is cool.
Okayish, some songs were a bit slow though. 6/10
This is a complicated one. Many of the songs are tremendously boring to me, yet I love her voice and what she stood for. Plus Emperor's New Clothes is an all time favorite of mine. Gonna go with a 3
Although O'Connor was controversial, her music was always solid. This album in particular had excellent combination of vocals and music
3 out of 5. More political than I thought but not surprised after thinking about it some more. Some good songs here.
Klang ziemlich nach Prince. War besser, als ich erwartet habe, aber sie jammert mir etwas zu viel.
Firstly I am so shocked to find out Nothing Compares 2 U is a cover!!!!! I love that song so much, how didn't I find this out sooner?! (I went and listened to the original and Sinéad's is better imo) Such a unique voice - the acapella song was beautiful. Jump In The River was also a good song, I just wish more of the album had been as upbeat An okay album overall - not my sort of thing really. Beautiful voice though and some great and powerful lyrics Rest in peace, Sinéad 3 ⭐️
held up better than i was expecting
A really solid album that has a lot more depth than one would expect.
Its enjoyable but i was a bit bored
ок
NC2U one of the most emotionally charged songs ever. The rest a pleasant sounding mess.
The only song of her’s I was familiar with was her version of Nothing Compares 2 U. Not huge into that song, but some of the other songs on here I really liked. The guitar and explosive drum hits coming in near the end of Last Day Of Our Acquaintance are really good. The lyrics on The Emperor’s New Clothes and Black Boys On Mopeds were great too.
Authentic, vulnerable and uniquely Sinead. Exactly what I’d expect from a Sinead record. Really lovely one second, poignant tough at other moments. Liked and hated this album at the same time which I kinda love.
3.5
3.5
Nice album , very of its time. A bit uneven, but some great songs. 3.5 stars
Not exactly bad but not that good either. She has an fine warble but apart from the one obvious highlight, the songs and production here tend to be pretty third rate. She knocks it out of the park on Nothing Compares 2 U and makes the Prince song her soaring own but everything else is either sub-Enya, sub-Sundays or sub-Billy Ocean. I do not have this album and am certainly not wanting it that much more now.
pretty good, several different styles. I don't really like the big hit, even thought I have heard it before. obviously a great singer and impactful lyrics. Favorite songs: first 2, black boys on mopeds. Overall around 6/10
I didn’t listen to this whole album the songs I listen to were OK not quite my genre
The first two songs were pretty meh, but it started growing on me after that. I didn’t quite finish the album, but was leaning toward 3 most of the way through.
I liked it. Kinda whiny at times, but the album was thematically consistent and beautiful. Kinda reminds me of Fiona Apple (or maybe I should say it the other way around). Either way, definitely great moments in the album, but there were some long stretches where I was a bit bored. 3 stars.
Better than I remember it. The music is pretty good,, but the lyrics are tiresome.
Sinéad is a pretty interesting person, and artist. I love Nothing Compares 2 U, and I think I could enjoy listening to this one more.
Helt greit, kanskje litt kjedelig musikalsk. Skjønner at tekstene kanskje er viktigst her.
I am a clove cigarette.
Ret divers, generelt gode sange.
Vähän kaikenlaista kevyttä rokkia. Tunnelmallista. Tykkäsin akustisista kappaleista enemmän. Kiva ääni. Parhaat: Nothing Compares 2 U, Last Day Of Our Acquaintance, Three Babies
76% Best: I Am Stretched on Your Grave; The Emperor's New Clothes; Nothing Compares 2 U Must-Hear? Not quite
Excellent
I really wanted to like this album. Some of the songs were beautiful, but most of them fell short.
Some good songs to fall asleep
Nice but pretty forgettable
A bit dated, but probably some good stuff.
Great voice. Not my favourite genre of music. The emperor’s new clothes could have been an 80s hit. But it came a couple of years too late. 3/5
Idk, she is a good singer and the songs were good, but this album really didn't hook me. I kept zoning out and the album became a blur. I already knew the Prince cover and Black Boys On Mopeds, but besides that I remember nothing from this album. High 3.
2 great songs (Emperors New Clothes, Black Boys on Mopeds). The rest was pretty good too.
She’s a GOAT for standing up to the Catholic Church but this doesn’t not offer much outside of a couple tracks.
Not bad
About half of this record I know already from hearing elsewhere but I've never listened all the way through. Some great songs, but overall it's missing a flow that pulls me through and leaves me wanting more. Since I should not want what I haven't got, I guess that's okay.
Fine, just not my thing.
Solid, rip
Great voice, but the songs just don't go anywhere.
Good voice. With the exception of the Prince song "Nothing Compares 2 U", material is tepid.
love her voice and sound. some songs were just eh for me, though
Another artist I'm not very familiar with, beyond buying Mandinka on single release and her collaborations with Jah Wobble. Obviously I've heard the big hit from this album. I can't deny she had a unique voice, but musically I'm not sure she's my thing. I did my customary thing of listening to it on my commute, so have given it a reasonable listen. Like I already noted above she was a unique vocal talent and that in itself has made listening to this album a pleasure. However, I don’t think that qualifies to make this album a classic. I did really enjoy her version of ‘I’m Stretched on your grave’, which was the standout track for me.
Another that I enjoyed more than I thought I would. Wasn’t familiar with much more than her biggest hits so was pleasantly surprised.
Solid vocals and lyrics.
In general a little slow but a few good ones.
This is surprisingly solid. The ballad and a capella tracks aren't vining with me. But when drums and bass are involved is a good listen
I like her voice, but the songs are a bit meh.
I don't think any pope has ever done anything wrong. If you read that and chose to keep reading, know that that was a lie. I lied to you...just like the pope does. This album is a lot better than I unfairly assumed it would be. Like most, my exposure to O'Connor's career is limited to Prince covers and anti-establishment practices. I almost didn't want this album to be any good, because I didn't want to dig any more into O'Connor's other material. But now I guess I'll have to.
An achingly intimate ritual of raw confessions and spectral melodies.
Good songs but there's something about the production that stifles what could be a great record. The album lands in a non-specific zone between pop and rock that I find unsatisfying.
I liked it
It was ok
Amazing voice. Enjoyed hearing some deep cuts
I really wanted to like this album way more than I actually did. That doesn't detract from the great personal respect I hold for the artist. RIP Sinead.
Not something i absolutely love, but something I like and I could see myself liking more with more listens. It’s very cool that it’s a vocals focused album.. will have to relisten to lyrics
Album 545 of 1001 Sinead O'Connor - I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got (1990) Rating : 3 / 5 This is one that I can recognize as a pretty good album that she put a lot of herself into but it just doesn't really strike a chord with me. Some decent tracks and some dull ones - a few that were a little more pop than I expected. Includes the huge hit "Nothing Compares 2 U", of course.
Incredible voice and some great songs on this album 3/5
RIP
I wasn’t exactly excited to start this one today, but it wasn’t as bad as I expected. It’s mostly a singer/songwriter alternative album. Some tracks are calm and minimal, while others lean more into an orchestral vibe or an acoustic feel. There are also electronic beats spread throughout, giving it a bit of variety.
I appreciate this more now, as I am older
A great singing voice. I wasn't necessarily into every song and I'm honestly completely over Nothing Compares 2 U at this point. It was still pretty enjoyable. I just wish that I liked the songs as much as I did her voice.
This was the first time I had listened to the whole album. I had heard Nothing Compares 2U countless times. Honestly, that song almost feels out of place on the rest of the album. It was good. But not as mind blowing as I expected. I may have to give it another go.
I found this album to be nice to listen to. Liked tracks: The Emperor's New Clothes, Nothing Compares 2 U, Jump in the River, The Last Day of Our Acquaintance
A fantastic singer, and a lot of good music on this album. 3/5 because while I appreciated the listen, I won't give it another listen.
Pretty ok
Favorite Track: Black Boys on Mopeds
Good
Enjoyable, but not really my thing. I need a bit more physical punch - guitars.
Love her voice and have always loved "The Emperor's New Clothes", but not quite enough for me to give it a 4.
Nothing compares 2 U zdecydowanie najlepsze, ale to nie jedyny dobry utwór. I am stretched on your grave z niespodziewanym motywem irlandzkim też mi się podobało. 3/5
Don’t have anything bad to say about this. Wasn’t bad at all
5/10 - It was not that interesting overall. Lucas and I listened to nothing compares 2 u at schatz and he told me how his dad likes the song. So I liked that song a little more than the rest
All the feelings at once. Aggressively fine.
Objectively a pretty great album. Great voice, great production, just not really my cuppa 3.5
The freaking reverb on this. It's so much that is you try to turn it up enough to hear the quiet parts, you just get earsplitting chirps of high and at every s or t. Too bad because there is some lovely stuff here. Favorite track has to be the last one.
Not too bad, though unfortunately she ends up sounding pretty whiny after so many songs.
Loved the first song. The rest of the album was ok
I have a real soft spot of Sinead. Nothing Compares 2 U is a pretty stellar performance. Nothing else on here quite gets to that level, I think, but it all sits pretty nicely beside each other. I don't know. This is really more of a 3.5 than a 3 but it's not quite a 4.
Bien
It's far more orchestral than her debut. A little less political, and cultural than it too. And far more lovesick too. Some songs stick, some don't.
A solid album from an icon.
Okay album with a good Prince song in the middle of it
Sinead seemed like a cool person, a real artist. Not really my music though.
It was nice to listen to this again after so many years. She had a lot of force and power to her voice, but balanced it out with lightness. The hit cover doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the songs. It’s very different from her writing and makes me wonder what kind of career she would have had if she hadn’t covered it. 3.4
An interesting blend of pop-type songs and more orchestral or folk oriented numbers. She uses her voice in an interesting way - louder brash sound contrasting with soft breathy vocals. Also didn't realize she played guitars, piano, arranged strings, etc. Not my thing so much, but it's pretty good and holds up quite well. You get a subtle sense of her rebellious spirit, which I like. "These are dangerous days; say what you feel is to make your own grave". 3.5
Nothing Compares 2 U almost bumps this to a 4 for me on it’s on. Such an iconic song and love this version. Chris Cornell’s acoustic version is also quite great and worth a listen. 3.25
Overall a solid album. Admittedly not sure I've ever heard another of her songs outside of Nothing Compares 2 U. Makes me want to go back and explore more of her catalog. 3.5/5
Not great but pretty good.
I'd only heard a few Sinead O'Connor songs prior to this, and I have to say, the thing that I was most taken aback by is how similar her manner of singing is to Bjork's, who put out Debut a few years after Sinead put this album out. I had never considered that there might be an influence there - in large part because it's not present on Nothing Compares 2 U - but now it's impossible to ignore.
Honestly better than I expected
Nothing compares to you is such a great song. I feel like she didn't have a cohesive album though. Some pop some soul, and some that mix the two. The best songs are were she blends the two in my opinion.
Knowing how much Sinead O'Connor means to some of the folks in our group, I listened to this with a little extra care, as my impression of Sinead going into this was simple bemusement. I never understood the depths of emotion she provoked (or evoked) from fans and detractors. I admired Sinead's willingness to be provocative, even if I thought some of it was manufactured. But... the album. I come to this with ever more compassion and a desire to want to enjoy the music, but it fails to make any impression. What makes listeners go so wild? I can barely make out what she's singing about and have a hard time discerning one song from the next. Yes, I can sit and pore over the lyrics, but what's my incentive? Everything gets swallowed in moody swaths of keyboards. Even the signature Prince tune falls under the "I prefer the version by the songwriter" category (though I can understand what she's singing in that tune), so the whole affair goes by and I've forgotten about it before it's over. For such a lightning rod, I never did and still don't understand why she touched a nerve — from her short hair to her music to her being banned from NBC (the fallout to that moment on SNL was ridiculous — I thought she nailed it), the reactions always seemed way out of proportion.
Great voice, but won’t be returning to this
Thoughts before listening: Huge record that I have never listened to. I obviously know "Nothing Compares 2 U" which is an amazing song, but I believe the rest will be new to me. I'm glad to have a reason to listen to this album for the first time. Review: This is okay. I'm not really sure what I was expecting, but I was surprised by how much it felt like a run-of-the-mill late 80s alt-rock record with some world music influences. "Nothing Compares 2 U" is such an amazing song, and nothing else quite reaches those heights...but really how could they? "The Emperor's New Clothes" is my second favorite song and overall this was an interesting album. 3-stars
Reminded me of T Swift kind of
Pretty decent, sometimes really angsty
Not bad
Good
doesn’t deserve as much praise as it gets it’s fine though
Her voice is good and some of the songs are really good, but some seem to drag a little to me. It's fine.
A moving and poignant record to listen to. Sinead was a very talented vocalist and songwriter. Aside from the Prince song, my favourite was The Emperor’s New Clothes, I’m sure I’d heard it before but this is the first time I listened attentively.
Familiar with her but had never listened. It was fine.
Pretty good album with one of the best written songs of all time.
I find this kind of music (maybe its just early 90s "alternative") pretty bland. The clear highlight here is the cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U", which is a fine cover of a great Prince track (I kind of prefer the original, but this is a case where I like both versions of the track). Does that make the entire album an essential listen? Debatable, but I don't find anything here particularly objectionable.
Listen, she’s some serious pipes we all know that…but this just didn’t do anything for me!
Great voice
Enjoyable. Definitely a different kind of voice.
I love O’Connor’s voice and Nothing Compares is done so beautifully. The rest is fine but not anything I’d go out of my way for.
What a talent. Too bad she was so out there.
Nice voice. There are a couple good songs.
Quiet bold ballads Coping with soft haunting rage Simply powerful
It's a beautiful album, but a bit too slow for me.
No doubt she has a good voice but never every song was a winner.
There are some beautiful songs, including of course Nothing Compares 2 U, but as a whole I am not grabbed by this album.
This was aight, but kinda bland to me overall. Killer voice though. Feels like a solid 3.
Pretty good, haven't heard most of the songs. I would listen to this again. Very relaxing, chilled out.
Awesome voice. Weird music/vocal mixture on some songs but I enjoyed the album. A few really enjoyable songs. Nothing Compared 2 U, emperors new clothes, jump in the river
Some good tracks, but it has a slow start and slow ending and the production isn't exactly my cup of tea. However, nothing compares and black boys on mopeds are unreal songs.
Breathy, epic, and saccharine. I hate how this album is mixed/mastered. Some good tunes, but a lot of the impact is blunted because of the mix.
Pretty sure I haven't heard a Sinead o Connor album before. She has a great voice, and there's some real emotion there. Unapologetically unafraid to stand up for what she believed in too. Probably did her career harm. Feel like she probably had it pretty rough. I think the track "I could've lied" by rhcp was about Sinead.... Although I think she always denied that there was anything between her and kiedis weirdly. What a track nothing compares 2 u is. I know it's not her song, but she completely and utterly made it her own and it forever will be. I remember liking it as child Black boys on mopeds followed by nothing compares 2 u were real tear jerkers and the highlights for me. 3.5, largely for these 2 tracks, it's not quite my thing though, but they will be getting added to the playlist
Absolutely belongs for for Nothing Compares 2 U. One of the best vocal takes ever cut to a record. The rest is... honestly interesting, but not highly repeatable for me.
quite diverse, and well, the obvious song everybody knows... it's nice as well!
This is probably a really highly rated album because of how good her singing is and the emotionally charged messages behinds the songs. The beats were pretty cool at times too. But not really my type of music. There is a song that used the beat from the second song and I can't put my finger on it I'm pretty sure it is Slightly Stoopid or Sublime though. Happy to have listened to this once.
It's fine but I wish i liked it more, since her voice is unique and she can get very expressive with it. A lot of the ballads and slower songs don't hold my attention to much, 'Nothing Compares 2 U' being the exception obviously. She nails it on that one, but it's not a bad listen by any stretch.
Made good by nothing compares 2 U
O hit é enorme e torna o escuta do disco completo pouco relevante.
RIP
I try not to evaluate music, or fllm or any sort of art with too much of a critical eye on the artist. For example, I don't like Tom Cruise, but i respect his acting and commitment to his roles. Thus, I don't judge his movies as any lesser because of his personality outside that realm. I never liked Sinead O'Connor. I feel like she never had any solid agenda or platform of advocacy. Like she just hates on everyone and everything and blamed her life on everyone else. The flip flopping and drama just left me uninterested in her at all, thus I don't typically bother with her music. Now, with that said, she was surrounded by good musicians and has a good strong singing voice. The album is overlong but varied enough to not be boring.
This was good background listening at work
Nice enough background
Unexpected - enjoyed more than I thought. A good Sunday morning listen.
I really liked nothing compares Not bad. 3/5
Although "Nothing Compares 2 U" was absolutely massive at the time, I didn't hear much else from/about her, other than the whole SNL Pope photo-tearing scandal. I barely remember one other song from the album, which is kinda sad- she was a great singer that was blacklisted long before "cancel culture" was even a thing, for standing up & speaking the truth that most wouldn't even acknowledge, much less accept, until decades later. RIP (1966-2023).
Classic 90’s but a little more laid back. Good original music, but I didn’t get super into it.
Great work on that thing
RIP. Nothing Compare 2 U is a classic. Surprised to hear some crunching guitars on a couple of tracks. Overall decent.
RiP
There is some interesting stuff here, not just the one hit. Did not care for the real minimalist stuff like the first and last tracks. Otherwise I kind of liked it. I always wondered why the flippant "2 U" in Nothing Compares 2 U. Seems to lessen the impact of a serious and emotional song. High 3/5, and RIP Ms. O'Connor.
One and a half good songs.
NC2U was pretty much all I knew Sinead O’Connor for until her recent death, so this was an education for me. Interesting mix of styles, and the defiant lyrics reflect the values she clearly lived by, which I respect a lot. It runs out of steam a bit towards the end but the first ~2/3rds is pretty captivating. 3.5
I only knew Nothing compares 2 u from this one. Her vocal ability is undoubtedly great; the tracks where it's just her and minimal instrumentation (I am stretched on your grave) really highlight this. Enjoyed: three babies, black boys on mopeds, nothing compares 2 u, i do not want what i haven't got (her vocals are haunting) Pretty solid, but not in favorite album territory, 3*
Mixed feelings when an artist is only mostly known by a cover version of another artist’s song. But this is a beautiful album, full of strong emotions and it made me a bit gloomy for Sinéad, the shitty life she had and the injustice she suffered.
Only few really good songs.
Sinead was such a natural singer with quite haunting tones to her voice, she didn't even need backing music. She was always quite outspoken as an individual on matters that she held dear, and a lot of the public and press hounded her for this, but that is irrelevant when it comes to the music she created. So let's look at this album. Her voice is faultless throughout every track, albeit some of the lyrics are weak at best. The backing music is very.lack lustre... like the last session those guys had was creating a mix tape for a shopping mall. The album was a good example of Sinead as a singer, but most of the tracks were instantly forgettable, other than The Emperors New Clothes and Nothing Compares to You.
I'd never listened to this album before, and only knew her great Prince cover, as it was EVERYWHERE when it came out. While I kinda like her voice, none of the other tracks did anything amazing for me, and were rather same-ish. 2.5 rounded to 3.
Love the voice. Obviously got the epic monolith of "Nothing Compares" Otherwise the songwriting is a bit slight. I think it would have gone under the radar without the big one.
its been seven hours and fifteen dayss
Great voice and emotion
Shitty Whitney Houston. Nothing Compares 2 U was a good song but nothing else to my liking. 80s/90s vibe. 2/3 star
Spacey post-new wave sounds, the music is pretty slow mellow minor key stuff with a mix of piano, acoustic guitars strumming, electrics chugging and some synth/keyboard accents. It's all bedding for the wide-ranging and impassioned vocals/lyrics which are the real driving force of the album. Nothing Compares 2 U is an incredible performance but none of the rest reaches those heights - it's not bad, but a bit slow and samey.
The style isn't for me, but there's a bravery to this absent from most other pop music on the list, a willingness to be clear, specific & uncomfortable. music: acknowledged. (⌐■_■)
Have come to appreciate Sinead. Real heavy stuff on this one, nice record.
Interesting? I didn't really like it very much I think I just need to be better
Better than i expected. Nice voice and a lot of variations between songs. Not exactly my style but it was pleasant to listen to.
My first time actually listening to anything by Sinead, and my opinion is it’s ok music. Generally not my thing
First listen Saved 5/10 Top track: Nothing Compares 2 U
I really love Sinead O'Connor, and I recently went through her entire discography, even purchasing a few CD's for albums that aren't streaming. I find "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" to be one of her most dated-sounding albums and one that I don't feel holds up like others in her discography. There are great songs, but I don't feel she had really found what she actually did want to make, yet (wink wink). To me, it's not until "Faith and Courage" that I really find her music incredibly powerful. "Sean-Nos Nua" is my favorite, and I also really love "Throw Down Your Arms" and "Theology." I also think I've almost listened to Prince's version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" more, at this point, and prefer that version (yes, I know he wrote it).
du gros folk rien de désagréable
Fantastisk röst men endimensionellt
2.7/5 Never been a huge fan, but it's alright. Best track: I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got
Solid, and of course great hit Nothing compares 2 U
HL: “Compares”, “I Am Stretched On Your Grave”, “Three Babies”, title track Glad this is on the list, it’s a jamboree of different genres and influences, but it’s also quite emotional and bleak (especially now). I won’t say that we should be hearing The Lion and the Cobra instead of this one here, but I personally got more enjoyment out of that (even more) uneven debut. Maybe it’s because of its rougher edges that get somewhat sanded over here, musically if not lyrically. “Three Babies” is incredibly sad Also, nothing quite like some Irish trad on a hip-hop beat 3.5
Oh, it’s like a boring Madonna or a slightly lame Cranberries. I like that cover version she did.
I do not want I haven’t heard. Haha. I get her cultural significance, but her music really isn’t for me, even after a full listen.
Sinead had a wonderfully beautiful voice and this album is really well produced but a little slow in parts for me. Overall I wanted to like it more than I actually did, but the songs I did like, I REALLY enjoyed. Stand out tracks: I Am Stretch on Your Grave, Black Boys on Mopeds, Nothing Compares 2 U
It was alright… it often feels dramatic for drama’s sake and the weight of the lyrics can’t match the instrumentation. I like the Irish influence being shown instead of just straight up art pop. 5/10
It was alright. Definitely should've finished jt tho
Rating: 3.0
Emotionally charged political album, only really knew of here outside the recent news of her passing from some hits she has. I think she had some real impactful songs that can hurt.
The album is quite bleak, with its songs about loss and death. Even bringing in the funky James Brown drum loop didn’t lighten things up, which isn’t surprising when you sing “I am stretched on your grave” over top of it. I give her thumbs up for tackling difficult topics and sticking to her guns.
Probably a 2.5 - real conflicted on this one. Wasn't vibing on first listen but picked up a lot more on second. A couple of these songs I really liked. And of course there's **that** song. RIP
Plutôt sympathique, avec un enorme tube, il n'en faut pas plus dans ce générateur de misère pour sortir du lot.
Tempting to give it five stars for Nothing Compares 2 U but I don't get the hype based on the other tracks
Great voice. Album does not have focus. 50% pop album and 50% folk/Irish traditional album. Could have been better to commit 100% in one direction. That being said, still very good. Sinead's voice is incredible.
Just fine all around, don’t think her voice suits some of the acapella and bare arrangement moments on this. I’ve also noticed we get a lot of albums with an artist’s one smash hit on it - weird way to create a “1,001 albums you must hear list.”
It was good, very reminiscent of the 90s.
This had an interesting variety of styles, ranging from ballads to electronic to rock but I've never really been able to connect with her music.
aight
Really thoughtful, with little in the way of interesting musical aspects. O'Connor perhaps would have been better in the field of poetry. This is exemplified in the closing track, which puts full focus on her voice and words. This is by far the most impactful track and mamaged to stick with me after the album's end.
I had listened to this before. It sounds quite dated now but has powerful lyrics. Three Babies and Nothing Compares 2 U are very affecting. Kudos to O'Connor for speaking out against the patriarchy and Catholic church at the time.
Weird, unassuming, gentle. Almost like Bjork's early work if she was Irish.
Decent record to have on in the background. I really like a couple of the tunes, but the rest is just okay.
Really enjoyed this album in the first half. It got a bit tedious by the end, and I was glad to be done listening.
Begorrah! Shamrocks, leprechauns and a diddly-diddly-diddly o’ the morning’ to yah. Oirish!
I blame the pope
Such a haunting and ethereal voice, whilst her songs are rather lengthy, this I feel, is one of those times where it's needed to have that breathing room to fully appreciate her voice and the arrangements around her. Best: Nothing Compares 2 U Worst: You Cause As Much Sorrow 3.5 Stars
I think she was very interesting. Not in a bad way or anything. She clearly has a very special voice. Some of her songs dragged on (especially the last) but overall it was pretty good.
Good!
Gotta give it up for nothing compares 2 u
Billl
Beautiful voice, mediocre music.
Don't like when politics comes into music or sport. However good album with great vocals. Great cover of Nothing compares 2 u. Might have given a 4 if the best song on it was an original.
One thing is clear on this album. There are some incredibly good writing here by O’Connor. The tracks feel pop without much sacrifice. Even if the big hit wasn’t written by her, the album as a whole works too well. A nice early ‘90s piece of pop music that send a rather high standard for the decade.
Nice Album with couple of good tracks
It was good at the time, it stands up pretty well, unfortunately I can only rate out of five stars and five has to equal 100%, very few albums are worthy in my opinion. This one misses out on a four star by very little but, for me, not worthy in the category below perfection.
It's ok, but it's not memorable.
Diet Enya
One cracking song and a bit of filler.
Nothing Compares 2 U - amazing song. The rest is a bit of a hodgepodge, some of it OK but nothing up to those lvels.
Nothing Compares 2 U is absolutely the standout track, rest of it just kind of meanders along
I appreciate that she had something to say, I just didn't love this. Plus the biggest hit is a Prince cover.
Solid
6/10 really nice vocal performance , some interesting lyrics, but I felt that it dragged a lot.
