Best deep purple songs live
Listened to it while busy—was great background music. A few cuts were good to workout to. It didn’t get on my nerves or sound horribly outdated to me.
jammy. so jammy. i liked this a lot more than i thought i was gonna
This really is a fantastic album. An example where the live versions are better than the studio versions. I was already familiar with this album and it's one of my favorites. I'll take off one star because Space Truckin' is a bit long and has some harshness, but overall the album is very good.
lots of good tracks, guitar solos and amazing voice from lead singer
Classic 70s rock!!!
Epitome of a rock album.
Awesome concert. I would've loved to attend! The energy was insane on this.
See right away this is why I wasn’t as thrilled with Hendrix…. This has everything, crazy drums, sick base line, guitar that is arguably as good (I know it’s all about context but just listening to it today it’s so much more engaging).such a strong start to a concert with this being a live album. Just ready to fucking party. Then they let you breathe with track 2 and the vocals are shining, I’m a sucker for a good falsetto. The Mule—-that drum solo holy shit. Ok last track kinda lost me with all the reverb… still what a great show it would have been. Nicole messaged me asking wtf I was listening to at that part haha
A pretty solid heavy rock set that can ever into prog.
This is an absolute banger album, Deep Purple is so good! Solos are long though when you’re listening to a whole album :D
Before today, I could tell you that Deep Purple was a band, and with time could probably name one or maybe even two songs, but not much more. I'll admit I met this album with a muffled sigh. So imagine my surprise when it turned out to be a live album (big fan) and moreso a live album filled with rocking (bigger fan). At one point it even lured my temperamental teenage son from the basement to ask what was up with the awesome drum solos, and I enjoyed his shock when learning it was a recording from over fifty years ago.
What can I say!!! I'm a live album enjoyer. The only song that I did not listen to in full on this album is "Space Truckin'" only because, with all due respect, it's TWENTY MINUTES LONG, and I refuse. But the performance both by the band and the vocalist are... unbelieveable. I'm sorry but if you can't enjoy live albums you ARE the weakest link because what is there not to love.
Hochenergetischer Auftritt!
i do love live albums, it’s true. however, while this album does help showcase the band’s strengths, it falls prey to what live albums often do… the band goes into long winded tangents, often bordering on being masturbatorial. most of the songs are about twice as long as they should be (“space truckin’ “ about 3x as long as it should be). but i must say that the band fuckin’ cooks and are firing on all cylinders. ritchie blackmore proves once again what a badass he is, ian gillan can shriek with the best of them, and the rest of the band is solid as well. kudos to jon lord for kicking ass on the organ. who knew you could kick that much ass on an organ? jon lord, that’s who. highlights: “highway star”, “child in time”, “lazy”
Menudo directo, quién hubiese estado allí!!
a fun time
Fun to listen to - I’d like to revisit this one down the road
Wish I have had the chance to hear them live those days
Deep Purple makes me smile. I can’t quite figure out if this is absurdly fantastic or fantastically absurd. My wife hates it for reasons that I COMPLETELY understand. And yet, listening to it just makes me so…happy. There's joy - that definitely swings into laughter at times - that I get from the sheer audacity of it. So many bands dedicated to self-indulgent displays of technical mastery leave me feeling empty and kind of disgusted. But for whatever reason Deep Purple makes me smile.
How to make a good situation out of Frank Zappa burning down a studio. Amazing live album.
I liked this more than I thought I would, given that it's a live album and most of the songs are stretched out to be really long - but I guess I like rock songs being stretched out like that, where they have long instrumental sections.
Another new to me album. And serendipitous, I noticed a Deep Purple t-shirt in a tv show (from the 80s) the other day, and commented on it. I really only knew Smoke on the Water. Live show CDs are fun. I give this a 4 for 'fun' but a 3 for music itself.
Amazing vocalist obviously but great instrumentation too. Never heard this album before listening here!
This live album is pretty much superior to the studio album, 'Machine Head' in every way. I used to listen to this record so much, I thought THESE were the studio versions of the songs. But just like with any live album on this list, your enjoyment is going to depend, not on how much you like live music, but how much you enjoy 15-minute noodling on what would otherwise be a 4-minute track.
The weird thing about live albums is, you can either have the band play pretty much the song the way it's on the studio record (which is what a lot of people want these days...), or you can change it up, extend it and make it it's own. Deep Purple did it a lot on this album, but it made that one song sound a little weird (you know the one, da-da-daahhh, da-da-dah-dahhh...). Ian Gillian I first heard on (of all things) "Jesus Christ Superstar". It wasn't until much later I tied him to Deep Purple. I enjoy his voice a lot, but there are a couple of times on this album where he goes WAY over the top (particularly in "Child In Time" and "Strange Kind Of Woman"). Every time I hear this album (and I don't hear it often, but I do put it on every now and again) those spots make me cringe. But DAMN... "Space Truckin'" just blows the place to smithereens, almost literally. Definitely a really great album, but the vocals on those two songs... just knock it down a little bit for me. It's not an album I listen to over and over. That'd make it 5 stars. So 4 it is.
Classical Rock with a jazzy, bluesy Hammond …
It's another list inclusion that should probably see Robert Dimery get a smack in the teeth - a live album mostly comprised of tracks that already appear in their other albums on the list. 🤷 Taken on its own terms, yeah, I enjoyed it. Some iconic tracks, and some of the jamming and playing around they do is fun - particularly liked the singer/guitar call and response. Fave tracks - "Child in Time" remains very wizard rock. "Highway Star" and "Smoke on the Water" are both classics, too.
It slaps! Almost over the top though
Pretty great. Still had some of the typical 70's rock tropes, but many of them were likely forged here. Good listen
Good album.
Excellent Live album. Originals and covers. Amazing drum solo.
I was stunned into admiring submission by the first two Deep Purple albums the generator served me. Do I also need a live version of those songs? I'm not sure I *needed* to hear this album after having heard the studio version of most of the songs, but I sure don't mind that I did.
Overall, I dig it. classic 70s 'heavy rock' vibes with some progressive/bluesy moments. They are a bit 'jam bandy' at times, but very talented and pleasant to listen to the (albeit rather long) solos. Each song is around 10mins long! Sheesh. The back and forth between the guitar and lyrics during 'Strange kind of Woman' was... annoying. These guys were certainly on a really interesting cocktail of drugs during some of these performances/recordings. Bonus star for Smoke on the Water -- the second-shortest song on the album.
I know this is not a 2 star album, I just don’t really like The Rolling Stones. So I can appreciate what they did and how people love them but they just never did it for me.
Classic 70's rock. Smoke on the water. Not really my jam but a good album.
Enjoyed my gen music.
Solid album. Probably not something I would listen to again, but it was neat hearing this live.
Superb live album. Great guitars ! 4 stars
Rock N Roll.
Today I looked at this list and realized how far behind I am, need to get back on it, but I digress. I have always loved live recordings, there's just something about them that appeals to me. I can't say I'm a huge Deep Purple fan but this was a good listen. I can definitely hear the influence on future generations of musicians and I think it still holds up.
As a part time drummer, HOLY GUACAMOLE!!! That, alone, is worth 4 of the 5 stars. Unfortunately, I don't know how often I would listen to the other 69 minutes to justify the 5th star. Very fine album, and expertly recorded.
It’s probably dumb that the thing that turned me around on Deep Purple was realizing that “Highway Star” was the opening song to the first Rock Band, but here we are. Aside from that, though, this being a live album does imbue it with a ferocity that their studio albums lack (at least in my experience).
Album 282 of 1001 Deep Purple - Made in Japan Rating : 4.5 / 5 Favorite Tracks : Highway Star / Smoke on the Water / Lazy I'm not real big on live albums but this is one of the few exceptions. Gets a little long in parts, but a great album, indeed.
Excellent band. Love the music and wish I spoke Japanese.
Never was a fan of Deep purple but I enjoyed the album, guitaring, drumming and voice replication of the hi notes on the guitar. WHEW!
First deep purple album. Didn’t know they did smoke on the water. Would have been awesome to see that show in person.
It's awesome that these guys did this live. Deep Purple must be one of the only bands whose best albums are live.
For sure the best live album so far. Great music, but some of the arrangements were just painfully long. I did like that part where the singer was imitating the guitar. That was cool. 3.5 stars rounded up.
forgot how much of a party album this was
Interesting to see a live album here. Heard most of.the songs 100s of times before, but never a live version. Loved the keyboard fill-ins between the tracks
organ- and guitar-driven craziness! two hours of non-stop movement that made the Soviet Union hide behind the Iron Curtain and ban all rock and roll music; a banger so powerful, my ears need a proper rest
4/5
This is how Deep Purple is meant to be heard, live. If you are new to the band, start here. If you are into guitar riffs, look bo further.
Damn fucking good. They'll never be "my" hard rock band, but I think I'll continue to like them more and more. 4/5
I appreciate when bands just jam on their live albums. Straight up good rock n roll (3.5/5)
Great early live album from a band that I think is better live. Edgy and fun with their early hits. Lazy is a great track. It gets long with some of the extended jams.
This was very good.
This is a pretty god damn phenomenal live performance. The jams are awesome, but a little long to listen to outside of the live setting. Still, the talent here is just overwhelming. Favorite track: Highway Star
classic and Highway Star top10 best songs ever in the world
Playing Catch Up on the Weekends #2 Smoke on the Water and Highway Star are classics, and Deep Purple obviously had an amazing live stage presence. However, unlike many, I'm not a fan of long songs that don't need to be long. That being said, as a one-listen experience, it was worth the time.
Despite being pretty familiar with some Deep Purple tunes for a long time, I've never listened to Made In Japan in full. This definitely rocks!
while i enjoyed this album, i can absolutely see how it would not be appreciated unless you're already at least somewhat of a fan of deep purple's music. the 20 minute tracks, extended drum and guitar solos, and random high-pitched screams aren't going to be everyone's cup of tea. still, i thought this was an exceptionally well-made live album, especially for the 70s. after listening to cheap trick's at budokan last week, this blows it out of the water in every way - tight musicianship, incredible virtuosity, fresh improvisation, and high fidelity audio. favorites: the ones i knew already (highway star, child in time, smoke on the water, and space truckin) plus the weird screams and bits on strange kind of woman and lazy.
Ok, so it's Deep Purple. I figure, if you're here, you know Deep Purple. Then you get about 47 minutes (give it take) and shit gets great. I have a new DP respect.
Oh no. A live album. A band that I don't care for in the slightest. Well, here we go... Wait a minute. The guitarist is breaking into a 3 minute guitar solo? The drummer is going off? Old, tired, familar songs being transformed into incredibly fun explorations by a band at the top of their game? This is not my kind of music, but it's strangely compelling and I feel like I'll want to revisit it in future.
Are you dragging or rushing? Bizarre drum set! Eerste 3 nummers waren prachtig.
It's a good concert album. I'd like to have been there.
I guess I never knew how much deep purple rocked. There’s a lot of bangers on this album even though it’s a live recording, I think the stand out track for me is child in time. Also shoutout to the 6 minute drum solo in the mule
The energy on this is palpable. Killer drum solo on The Mule. This is a great jam out record. Space Truckin' is out there. As someone who doesn't go much for jam or blues, this record really hit the spot.
NIce album. Lots of great songs. Although I felt the live recording was a bit flat at times
He hit the high notes in Child of time O.o. Great live album. Would be better if they could've fit a few more different songs. Speed King x2 and Black Night x3 was a little rough. 4/5
I only really know Smoke on the Water because it's everyone's first guitar song. These guys go hard! Drum solo on The Mule is more like a whole drum song. Is it the whole song..? No, the guitar comes back after 8 minutes but not to much fanfare... could have been more exciting. I think this being a live album makes it difficult to get into as a first time listener. Every song is about 50% longer than it should be. That's just the nature of live music. Starting to lose interest by disc 2. Why is Black Night on here 3 times? Okay, I looked it up. Disc 2 is encores/remixes. I think I can safely stop paying attention here. Overall pretty good hard rock/metal album.
Banger but a lot of filler so not a 5 Strong 4 though these guys are nuts Highway star is a banger
Good jam. Fun and fast and hit hard. Fav song: highway star. Blasted highway Star while driving in the Integra 🚗🚗🚗. Didn’t like the mule that much.
Terrific musicianship and full of energy. I can only imagine how groundbreaking this must've been when it first came out.
Great album, with the classic smoke on the water featured on it.
Very good sound quality for a live album, I was kinda dreading this listen...my wife was absolutely dreading it. Took the advice of some fellow reviewers with more expertise and stopped where the original album ended. Track 7. Space Truckin. 7 songs, one hour. A pretty good time. Added 3 tracks to the 1001 Playlist.
Very 70's. Definitely not high enough for this album right now. I like it, though.
So rad. Very 70s
Not usually my thing but this was fun and clearly v talented musicians, enjoyed tryna copy when they go ‘AAAAaaaAaaAAAH’
You could feel the energy of the live performance, which was cool, and fun to hear smoke on the water.
It's good classic rock, a bit self indulgent at times, but still a band in their prime absolutely flying. Putting three encores at the end of this version of the album is an odd choice, especially when they're all the same song, but the core of the album is still good.
Enjoyed this a lot even though this kind of rock isn’t normally my thing.
I think I liked this just about as much as the studio album. Some of the live stuff is better. Some is not (the drum solos, specifically) but it's not a bad album at all. One I'll probably listen to again.
Great performance and album. Come back around for a second listen to consider buying vinyl.
Classic one
Genre-defining. Lots of solos, which you don't hear any more, and some were a bit long, but all were great.
I thought it was okay and I was going to complain about it being too long, but then I listened to the drum solo.
makes me wanna drive too fast on a japanese highway. I liked deep purple before and live albums are fun. definitely enjoyable
Classic rock at its finest
Great live album, made me like smoke on the water which I didnt really like.
A very special album of a very good life. Must be a 5/5 if you are the best Deep Purple fan.
This a great live album by a talented band. For the perfection I would want some more surprises and diverse instrumentation.
Outstanding: 4/5 It's a live album (and really a greatest hits album). Standouts: Child in Time, Smoke on the Water, Highway Star, Lazy, Space Truckin'
Great Deep Purple live album
- Why are there so many live albums on this list - This bangs tho - Insane jamming, truthfully was not familiar with Deep Purple's game
nice music
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Highway star, Child in time, Smoke on the water, Strange kind of woman, Space truckin’, Black knight
This album went stupid hard. I don’t think I had ever listened to much Deep Purple beyond Smoke on the Water, but this album really shows off their talent and energy. As the kids say… it slaps!
This is fun. I like all the crazy falsetto vocal moments, the crazily overdriven organ sounds, and just the playfulness of this album. The studio version of Highway Star is already a tune I love, but this live version kicks in fucking hard! I need to listen to this again in a live room instead of headphones, but it was still rad.
Very solid live album. I really enjoyed it, actually. These songs would be great to see live, especially in 1972. 4/5
Started out great with 3 great songs in a great live version, afterwards it fizzeled out a bit because both the songs and the performance wasn't as standoutiscj anymore
I expected to hate this. I think Deep Purple is pretty good, but the length of some of these songs...yeesh. I've also never been big on live albums. Ultimately I had a better time with it than I expected to and the length and being a live album didn't really bother me at all. I kind of underrated their other albums here so I'm giving this one a nice solid 4.
Fun listen and great live sound
Listened Before? N Wow, an absolute scorcher! This band was ON IT during these shows and it comes across even 50 years later. I loved this, I just wish they'd left some more crowd noise in. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Smoke on the Water
Hippies. Cool. 4 Sterne.
Goede band, vette opnames.
Zo'n livesessie is gewoon een soort best-off album. Eerlijk is eerlijk.
This is an excellent live album of the genre.
Deep Purple at their prime, but some of the songs are way too long with all the solos
Absolutely amazing, obviously
Slaps
Great love album, some of the most iconic classic rock jams right here
Rip-roaring hard rock that tips into heavy metal and prog with loads of guitar heroics. The version of “Smoke on the Water” here is awesome. That last track is pretty gratuitous but overall I really enjoyed this.
I have always heard about how influential Deep Purple was but having only heard the album versions of "Smoke on the Water" and "Highway Star," I never really grasped why. I think I get it now. The live versions of their songs have the kind of metal-esque whistle-voice yelling that I'm guessing wasn't replicated on an LP until Van Halen in 1978. The energy in these songs is palpable; you can tell that they're on the verge of changing rock music forever. I enjoyed the hell out of this live album.
Live rock albums are very hit or miss for me, and I usually don't like when bands go on tangents for way too long. But for the most part, I didn't really mind it with this one. The performances of the actual songs were great and the elongated jams were mostly good, albeit pretty long in a couple places.
I feel like my whole generation was lied to about Deep Purple: "They're the guys who wrote a guitar song you can play with one finger. Famous one hit wonders!" This album shredded. Lots of high intensity, hard rock jams that went on for longer than anticipated. There were some weird parts like a 4 minute drum solo or some back and forths between the vocalist and guitar solos that didn't translate well, but I imagine seeing this blitzed on coke in the early 70's in Japan was an absolute riot.
I liked this more than I expected to, but many of the songs were a little too long
DP's playing on this record is pretty much flawless both in technical terms and regarding the energy they apparently brought to the stage. For a live recording, especially from the early 70's, production is stellar. That said, I still just don't get the appeal of listening to live recordings at home. Studio recordings of the same songs would have garnered an easy 5 stars from me, just like the other DP record we go from this list.
A version of Smoke on the Water that I can actually stand to listen to? TOP tier.
I’m not sure if I would have made it out of this concert alive if I was there. This has everything you would want in a rock concert. Heavy riffs, extended jams, drum solos. Add in the fact that everything is so tight in this performance. Zero sloppiness. I can’t confirm they’re on drugs here, but if they are, nobody can tell me that drugs are all bad after this masterpiece.
Not so into the long drum solos, but it was still a great listen. Enjoyed the extended edition too.
Child in Time - 16/10
Some great songs on this album
8/10
Another classic. All around excellent.
Powerful live document of a band in its prime. I generally prefer the studio versions of most of these songs, but hearing them retain their strength even without the studio (hotel) polish is still a real treat. 4
Fuck yeah Deep Purple, buuuut I'm in the biggest fan ever of live albums.
I
Great music and a great energy, but I am not a great fan of live albums. I really enjoy long drum solos while I'm at a concert, but on this album it is a little too much. Would have been 5 stars if this music, with this energy and without all the background noise, was properly recorded in a studio.
Can really lose myself in live solos, bit annoyed by applause and talking band. Overal very good
Tons of fun with all the Purple early classics sounding bigger, better and bolder live. No album with a 7-minute drum solo is getting five stars, but this is a shoe-in for four. Do agree that the presence of other Purple albums make this a pretty redundant use of a 1001 slot.
This was a real tough one, but not for the same reasons as with past albums. The music itself was good, no doubt, but my gripe is mostly with whether live albums should actually be included on this list or not, and the fact that there seemed to be about 10 different versions of this particular album if you go and search for it on wikipedia (I listened to the 2 CD variant from 2014). A liveset in my experience usually comes with the latest - but more importantly, greatest - songs of a band. So it kind of becomes a "greatest hits light" album, and I definitely don't think greatest hits albums belong on a list like this because I think it's not a fair comparison. So I'm leaning towards not being a fan of this being included at all actually, but let's have a look at the music a bit with that said. I see that the original CD only contained what is essentially CD1 of the 2014 album, so I will only consider that when I write my thoughts below. I think the music is very good, but I'm not completely sold on everything. Smoke on water, though having a catchy and easy riff, is one of the most overplayed songs ever in my opinion, so just hearing that got me a bit anti. Then there is a 7 min drum solo or something in the Mule which almost made me quit it. The songs are also needlessly long, which of course is not an issue if you're there live, but becomes a bit tedious when listening to it like this. Otherwise I think it's very good, actually much better than I first expected. I like the sound of 70s rock a lot, feels very raw and has some "dirtyness" to the sound that I really like, if you compare with modern recordings of rock for example. Very straight forward with a cranked amplifier, very nice. Reminds me a lot of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, which I also like a lot. Everyone in the band plays very tight as well, singer really delivers. Despite all the annoyances I really enjoyed it though, feels like something I could listen to again for sure!
Awesome! I didn’t realize some of these songs were Deep Purple. Really really enjoyed this. Awesome prog rock
Excellent, great energy and some very catchy parts
This is a fantastically produced live experience. It sounds like the record and that’s for the better. Some of the improv riffing get a little long in the tooth but doesn’t spoil a very good live album.
It rocks but nothing earth shattering.
Never listened to deep purple outside of smoke on the water. They're great. Very talented. Can see why it's classic
Happy, the band is having fun.
Great live album, some of the solos go on for far to long but there's a lot of skill on display.
Quintessential 70s rock
Excellent live session, doesn't sound as clean as an album would but great stuff all around. Maybe not my type of thing anymore but still a good listen.
I was so ready to give this a low mark. I wanted to dis the 1001 committee, since most of the material on this LP came from the two Deep Purple albums released the year prior, In Rock & Machine Head, which are the only other two DP LPs put forward by 1001. What could be so special about this live LP except for maybe 10-minute drum solos? However, the first minute or so changed my mind. They are kick-ass rockers live. Paice’s drumming is so fast and driving and Ian Gillan’s voice (and screams) is as good live as in the studio. Still I need to deduct a star for the typical live album overindulgence.
Great long versions. All time top 5 recognized riffs...Duh duh da, da da duh dunt ta. Duh duh da, dunt ta
Wowza didn’t think I was going to dig this one. Definitely reminded me of listening to music with my dad and his family. I feel like Deep Purple was one of those bands my uncles talked about a lot and I didn’t understand the hype. Child in Time and Lazy were my favorites of the album.
Great live album. Got a little indulgent at parts, but the kickass parts made it more than worth it
A product of their time but holy fuck the first disk is amazing. Great musicians and performers.
What a stellar live album - so clean! I only really know Smoke on the Water as well, so what a great introduction. My top pick is 'Highway Star', truly amazing playing and energy!
Wrestled between 4 and 5 for this. The talent here is insane. My only gripe is I just don’t love Deep Purple’s songwriting. I love listening to them play and this has the most insane drum solo I’ve ever heard, I just wish I liked the actual song parts more.
Rating the original release, which ends at Space Truckin’. Top notch performances by all.
Really fun live album
I got blisters on me fingers!
Great guitar-laden live album of the early 70’s.
Pretty excellent live album.
Not sure why there's a live album on the list - it's not *really* an album. It's really good though, sounds like Led Zep at points and Monster Magnet at others.
If this album was a Star Wars movie it would be solo. The solos are I sane for everybody especially the guitar vocals and drums. Gets the people going. HYPE. I FELT LIKE PUNCHING MY HEAD THROUGH DRYWALL SIMPLY BECAUSE I CAN and that is the energy I love to see radiating here. Good job
I appreciated this even though it was long as hell. The solos were magnificent, specifically the guitar solos. Also the vocals were immensely impressive, very few people can hit those notes. With that said, it was a bit drawn out in my opinion. Could’ve kept it to 60 or 90 minutes. 3.5 stars, I’ll say a 4 to be generous.
It's amazing this was played live.
Ykköstä annettiin Deep purplelle.. Eka ykkönen.. Kiinnostaa miltä japanilaisista tuntu kuunnella tämmöstä... Ja minkälianen japsi menee tämmöstä katsomaan.. Isänmaataan häpeävä.. vai uutta sen oppiva..
Great live album, dudes were shredding

You know I've honestly never really listened to them outside of Smoke on the Water but this rocks. Super jammy and creative.
4.0
fun live album
Great live energy, gives a glimpse into what it must have felt like to see those shows live.
Jojos refrence (this is ironic)
Ian Paice, blimey.
Classic Rock performed in its greatest format. Whats not to like?
Album live, improvisations remarquables. À réécouter.
I used to really like this album (and Deep Purple's music in general). Times have changed, though, and Deep Purple's appeal has faded a lot. Coming back to this album, the performances felt more like the prolonged orgasm of some wankfest festival. So what does it say about me if I were to hint that, eventually, while re-listening to the album after all these years, I sort of fell back for it? Regardless of our opinion about the music, I argue we can all agree on the following: 1. This album represents a pretty unique flavour of a live music act. 2. This is probably the best “best of Deep Purple” album (for better or worse).
First listen. Good stuff. Some of the jams are looong.
Strangely I was giving this album immediately after Deep Purple In Rock. As I mention in that review, this was my first exposure to Deep Purple beyond "Smoke on the Water." After listening to these back-to-back I came to two conclusions: 1) Deep Purple is an insanely good band 2) I'm not a huge fan of live albums As far as live albums go, this one is a banger for sure. But, I just don't think a live album can capture the essence of a band's performance, especially if they are well-known for their extravagant live shows. Sure there are exceptions to this (Nirvana Unplugged comes to mind), but there's something about the audience interactions, the clapping along to the beat, etc. that just don't work for me when I'm driving along in my car. That being said, I thought every single song on this track was fire. Every song had solos and interplay among the band that was top notch and jamming as good as some of the best I've heard (Allman Bros, Phish, the Dead). At the same time, I don't need a five minute drum solo when I'm sitting at home. This was tough to rate. I think it's a five-star live album...among the best. But I just didn't love listening to it I think more due to my own reservations about live music on tape.
Very energetic and intense album, very well performed.
Live recordings from August 1972 in Osaka and Tokyo, in which Deep Purple takes liberties with their soloing. Was there any doubt that Deep Purple is the greatest rock band of all time? I don't mean post-punk or goth rock or grunge or whatever else, I just mean just simple hard rock. They're damn good performers who play damn good songs. Of course their most notable hit "Smoke on the Water" is on here, but the other songs are equally worthy of praise. Openers "Highway Star" and "Child in Time" are particularly great. The real selling point of this album, though, is the intense soloing that shows the band flexing their improvisational skills. This tends to be a strength and a weakness on this record. The best parts of the solos is the captive audience, soaking in the raw skill and finesse of the boys as they jam out. They are competent at this. It's also just cool to hear the songs meet new heights through shredding guitars and blasting drums. The worst parts are in the length of the solos, as they begin to take away from the songs themselves after a while. Some parts are just needlessly noodling. "Lazy" is perhaps the worst contender; just play the damn song. Some people cite this as the greatest live rock album. I think there are better contenders, but this is still a great showing.
Classic, sounds like a great gig
This is my jam. Extended guitar solos and dirty organs. Peak 1970s live music. And a long drum solo! When does that happen nowadays?
The production was surprisingly good for a live album. The performances were really good in my opinion, only downside is that is was soooo long
This is the best Deep Purple I’ve heard. Somehow much more interesting than the albums I’ve listened to.
24/8
Classic album that is easy to appreciate. I am just exhausted imagining how difficult it would be to play some of these songs.
Its very good, there are some excellent drum solos. If I had to nitpick, sometimes some of the songs go on for a bit too long and some of the "banter" with the audience misses but it's still great stuff 4 stars
Meh
The ripping guitars of early Deep Purple were just fantastic.
First deep purple album, like it a lot despite the proggy parts such as the intro on Lazy. The heavier parts really get me, like the finals on most songs
The only song I know of Deep Purple's is Smoke on the water. I should probably know more as I am a fan of rock music. Highway Star is a great introductory song - it rocks. And the singer (in contrast to yesterdays 'TRex' album) has a GREAT voice - very soulful and strong - what a range. As a live album - for 1972 - the mixing on this is pretty great, it could well be a studio album - I've been to many concerts, listened to a lot of soundboard captures, and this one pretty perfect. I was impressed by the smooth transition from Highway Star to Child in Time. Now - issues - there's a lot of 'instrument-wank' on this - maybe that's just Deep Purple, I don't know. As a fan of Iron Maiden - I don't mind, but I can see why others would be put off. Some of the 'solos' were too long (like the drum solo 'The Mule') - personally - a great technical drum rhythm is far better than a long speed roll. There's a couple of stupid 'gimmick' things on this also, interjecting segments of a comedy song, or the call/reply part on Strange Kind of Woman. Skillful - but not really that fun to listen to. The crowd are fairly muted. All in all - it's great sound, Deep Purple are an obviously great band - but it's spoilt somewhat by the overly long instrument solos and gimmicky bits.
A solid 3.5 stars, maybe 4
If i was there live I'd easily give this a 5/5. Great album but goes on a little long. Some Skippable songs later on but it finishes with a bang
8/10. Really nice, jammy sort of live album
Absolutely shreds sometimes, other times it’s too much of nothing. 7/10
I listened to them a lot in high school.
Deep Purple was the first artist I got on this 1001 Albums journey, so it was kind of nice to revisit the live version of them. I was impressed the first time around and I am still equally as impressed here. Solid live album with some great moments.
A great album to get for a Purple fan. This album exemplifies the band at the height of their powers. The band shows both individual skill and chemistry as a unit, and puts together a mighty sound on some classic tracks. At their peak (like here for example), Purple was as good as Led Zep, but they just never could keep it going beyond a small handful of albums.
Hadn't listened to this album for years - it is a good live album of course, just like those classic live albums from Thin Lizzy, The Who, Motorhead, Rush etc etc but I still much prefer the studio albums especially in the cases that involve these tedious drum solos.. as in this one.. but still definitely 4 star.
Great live album, sounded more bluesy than I expected. Maybe a bit too much mocking about with all the solos and psychedelic jamming. Enjoyed it nevertheless.
Very groovy
There's nothing quite like a good rock live album
A classic. No nonsense heavy rock, with a lot of groovy blues elements refining it. And then Ian Gillans super vocal work on top of things wouuww!
Been a while since I listened to a studio album but it sure seems like they're better live. That was fun.
Very entertaining love album. Mixed well, they sound great. The only thing stopping me from rating this 5 stars is Smoke on the Water, hate that damn song.
A great live album! Fantastic drumming, guitars, vocals and you could tell the band was enjoying themselves in their set!
Live, this would be 5 stars. Deep Purple is a masterclass in the OG heavy metal. This was long though. I had to go 4 stars with this.
9/10, would go see.
Great Live album, little bit long, but great barbaric presentation of the band at their peak (7/10) FT: Child in Time, Smoke on the Water, Lazy
Energetic, empowering, diverse. Decent.
Already listened to it
Despite the fact I'm not always a fan of live albums, I did enjoy this one. The main downside is the 5 and a half minute drum solo
cool and interesting 3.8
ég er alveg að fíla deep sko
Some great music on here. Excellent live performance.
Not a rock fan but have to say it's absolutely a dedicated performance. Melody and rhythm not bad, and it's surely been one of the influences to Japanese rock works
Familiar with Smoke on the Water. Other songs were pretty great too. The live show had a lot of guitar and drum solos - sounds like they just had a lot of fun jamming out.
Great songs, great performance.
One of the formative albums of my youth & the first band I saw live (Sheffield City Hall, 1972). I haven’t heard it for years & it probably wouldn’t be my choice of music these days but it’s great to listen to it again & even greater to see so many classic tracks, such as Highway Star, Child in Time , Smoke on the Water, & Strange Kind of Woman, holding up so well.
I dig it
\"Can we have everything louder than everything else?\" Deep Purple at the height of their live powers. Tight, dramatic, possibly even histrionic (\"child in time)\". Cracking tunes (\"smoke on the water\"), powerhouse rhythm section (\"black night\"), loud as hell (speed king), with a genuine fire. Does feature some unfortunate solos (drum solo on \"the mule\", or organ intro to \"lazy\", best skipped), some questionable (call and response on \"strange kind of woman\", leading eventually to Gillan's mighty acapella wail), much is inspired as this band stretches out its considerable powers (\"space truckin'\" or \"black night\", for example).
A great live performance!
Makes me wish I was there in person. Starts out with three of their most classic songs. Lots of awesome improv and audience participation. There are of course the weaknesses of live albums, but this is by far the best I've listened to, and again I wish I was there to see it all go down.
Very versatile… would have had to had an advisory label on their album now a days for expletive words😆Smoke on the 💦 is still an “air drum 🥁 and guitar 🎸 favorite for sure. One of the only heavy metal I have ever liked.
Classic 70s Rock. Epic, heavy, album was too long.
A classic
Great stuff from this band!
Livealbum inspelat under konserter i Japan 1972. Wow. Otroligt bra! Extremt tekniskt skickliga solon. Bästa låt: Child in Time
Closing with a Little Richard cover is an absolutely bizarre choice
Heb ik opbplaat
Great energy in the impro parts, equally good restraint in the calm sections
Didn't really know much Deep Purple before - they rock hard. If you only know "Smoke on the Water", try this album. The vocals on "Child of Time" are otherworldly.
Sounds so heavy for 1972! Great raw, live album. Removed one star because some songs are dragging on for far too long.
solid hard rock sound. The lead singer wails!
Loved the drum solos. Pretty much the essence of a period of time in the 70s. It would have been fun to see them in concert.
Nota:7/10
I'm still not sold on the idea of live albums being on this list but as far as live albums go, this is pretty damn strong. Sure, it can be guilty of self-indulgence in parts but the band is tight as fuck despite seemingly constantly going off on a tangent. You'd be fuming if you went to a gig these days though and only got 7 songs. Best track: Highway Star
Energetic, fun and wild.
A classic. The only tracks that are iffy are the mule and the last two extras
Good rock & roll
A classic of its day and still sounds good today
A real blast from the past so I was keen to listen to it. Best tracks; Smoke on the Water and Strange Kinda Woman. We were very enthusiastic Deep Purple fans in the 70s. ****
Yeah, good. What was it with Classic Rock gigs in Japan in the 70s?
Honestly, I was underestimating those guys
simply wonderful
Gefällt besser als gedacht
First live album of the project, and what a way to start! Smoke on the Water was my only knowledge of DP. Come to find out I also knew High Way Star. Another cracker. The rest of the tracks are less memorable, but it was a lot of fun hearing them try to banter for their Japanese audience. And the solos! Solos for days. That drummer ain’t no John Bonham but the guitar solos were great. Glad I found this one.
What is it with this list and live albums? Were there not enough normal ones to add? Was not any of the other deep purple records deemed to be listed? It’s a nice recording tho.
Digno representante del género.
Definitive sound of classic rock. “Child in Time” = epic, astonishing vocal.
Flexing !!!
Definitely more metal than I was expecting.
Discazo. Varias rolas agregadas a mi lista.
Ninguém: Absolutamente ninguém: Deep Purple: "Solo de bateria de 12 horas"
Some crazy singin
archi lourd mais album live (chansons longues)
good album, but only good for driving on the highway
4
Heavier and more metal than I thought. Really liked it. Will listen again
Much better than i was expected. 3.75
A great rock band, the songs are good but as a live album some of them are very long and a bit self indulgent.
Beginning to confirm my assumption that live recordings are better if you haven't already heard the studio version. Length is not helpful to a few of these, but they're quite good otherwise
Wore out the grooves on this album as a kid and still remember most every note, though as I've grown older I think I'd prefer to have Machine Head on vinyl.
A total classic. One of the best live albums of all time.
Great fucking live album, so much energy, my type of rock. Standout Tracks: Smoke on the Water, The Mule, Lazy, Space Truckin’
A little too much diddling, but overall, an energetic and rewarding live album
Pretty fun live album. Much longer than I am ever interested in listening to again, but a great album to rock through once.
Too jammy for me, but I loved Highway Star
Very long live album. Each song 7-9min. They sound okay, but didn't need that much of it
Made in Japan, perfected in America.
Do not listen for a 2nd time. Some good wankery, but not as good as the Allman Brothers. 3 mainly for running a call and response, and the lead vocalist screaming his bloody head off.
Clearly an example of great musicians performing their craft brilliantly in a live context, something that many bands wouldn't be able to equal. Yet, unlike a lot of the live albums from this list that I've heard so far (Fela Kuti, Nirvana, Jonny Cash X2) it doesn't offer the same value as having been there. This feels like it would be great for the actual audience but not as much at home. There isn't the same audience engagement that makes many of these live albums great, and whilst the solos demonstrate skill, they don't interest at home.
"Why does this sound SO familiar" -> actually looks attentively at artist's name -> I had these guys' studio album literally 1 week to the day ago. Lack of creativity on the generator's part. Anyway, call me duly impressed that they can pull all this off live—but not, like, particularly deeply moved by any of it
This was somewhat of a chore. Great musicians, cool tunes, but probably more of a “you had to be there” kind of thing.
I dug most of the first disc.
This band only made a couple good songs - they aren't any more appealing live.
this was fine. definitely not for me, but it sounded good. too jam band-y
I'm sure this album would be great if I cared at all about Deep Purple or had particularly strong feelings about live albums. They are certainly jamming, and the energy is there. The songs feel long (and in the case of Space Truckin' is just long), but I kind of liked the jazzier vibe of Lazy.
This is a live album, which was quite old, but it was quite enjoyable. I know that this is quite an old album, but I thought that this was maybe recorded more recently. Overall, quite enjoyable.
3/5. Very solid live album, they take several songs and expand them out into massive jams. Best shown on the set closer which is a 20 minute long version of “Space Truckin” which goes through a ton of different solo passages and is a great listen. Their biggest hits “highway star” and “smoke on the water” are played more straightforwardly though. One of those live album cases though where outside of Space Truckin I do simply prefer most of the studio versions of these songs. But that’s not to discount how much of a powerhouse these guys seemed like they were live.
Solid 3.5 not sure I'd listen to it again and again though
Might relisten, might not. As far as live albums go, it's nothing impressive. As long as rock goes, also not super impressive.
Actually for a live album it is pretty solid. Not a Purple fan but good Ol' 70's Rock n'Roll!
It started well. Then the mule started. Bloody hell I hate drum solos.
Verbaasd dat ik smoke on the water al kende
