Reviews (page 6 of 9)

The screams and wails in the album are pretty next level. Some sick solos from Mr Ritchie Blackmore as well

Live albums for me are either revolutionarily good or passable. This album is definitely listenable and I think a good attempt at capturing the spirit of the Deep Purple’s live shows. I appreciated the classics like “Smoke on the Water”, but my favorite track was “Strange Kind of Woman”. The vocal/guitar play in the vamp was fun and different. I agree that they are an underrated band but will note that most of their greatest hits came off their first album. To be great you have to be consistently good. Were they?

Did I need to hear 3 different live versions of ""Black Night"? No, I did not. Was I mad about it? Also, no. Deep Purple feels a bit underrated. I didn't realize that "Highway Star" was one of their songs. and of course, everyone knows "Smoke on the Water". It was entertaining enough. Do I need a 20 minute live version of "Space Truckin"? Not during the day with no alcohol or weed for sure. Again though it was enjoyable enough. I did start thinking about the legacy and descendants of Deep Purple. Are Deep Purple the real Spinal Tap? Are their descendants Kiss and Motley Crue? Interesting band who doesn't get talked about much these days.

I first heard this in 1996 during my first year of university. I met a drummer from BC and we quickly became friends and started playing music together. He loved music and opened my eyes to a lot of albums I had never given a chance. He was the first guy to introduce me to led zeppelin’s first album. He was also a passionate about Deep Purple, a band I had always dismissed. He loved Ian Paice! Seeing his enthusiasm for it made me appreciate it so much more. Listening now, I can still appreciate it and know the musicians are on fire - I just know I won’t listen to this again for another 28 years.

I've never really listened to that much Deep Purple but, given how much they're referred to as proto-metal inspirations for the genre, I feel like I should. I'm obviously familiar with a lot of their songs. This was a solid live album but the 10+ min songs definitely started to drag at times. A bit too much noodling or drum solos.

Fast notes don't necessarily make for interesting solos. Wah wah. Probably good fun to be in the audience, but not as impactful as a listener now. Smoke on the Water is a classic and changed the world for beginning instrumentalists of all kinds, so that deserves some credit. The organ was my favorite part of every track.

live albums>>> Disc 1 is lots of fun then it declines. Lots to love if you want long riffs, wild instrumentals, and overall craziness

Like Deep Purple. Underated band. Good live album.

Would love this album if it wasn't for all of the solos.

Smoooooke on the water. Made in Japan is 10 minutes of material stretched out to fill an hour and 15. Everything's generously padded out with rock show gimmicks and tomfoolery, including a drum solo that could have its own intermission. If you accept the premise, though, Made in Japan is quite good at capturing the feel and energy of this kind of a live show. I enjoyed the album and I can see myself returning to it. The main thing that holds it back for me (and prevents me from rating it higher) is that, with the exception of "Smoke on the Water," the songs themselves were only okay.

I still think Deep Purple is a deeply silly band. They can rock hard at times, but this is a little over the top and can get a bit wanky. It’s fine, it’s just really not for me.

Initial thought: ugh a live album by another British band that only made it to America with one mid level single. By the scream on the second song: of shit its Jesus from Jesus Christ Superstar! The best musical ever! Definitely get to 3 stars on that alone. Otherwise pretty good. Hate live albums, but this isn't the worst.

Extra long live Heavy Metal album rock with crazy long drum and guitar solos being okaish

May need to return to this - couldn’t stay focused

I could see how this would be instrumental in the evolution of heavy metal.

This album comes out rocking and rarely slows down. I enjoyed it for the most part, but there were elements I could have done without like the extended drum solos, vocal screeches (between songs), and some of the more experimental synth effects. Maybe I’m just getting old, but I think it would be a stronger album without that stuff. This is partially why I usually don’t get too into live albums. There’s a degree of excess and carrying on that works well at a live performance, but doesn’t always translate to the recording. Overall, there were a lot of fun grooves and some songs I’ll revisit. Good but not great record is how I’ll classify this one. 3/5 Highlights: Highway Star Child in Time Lazy

It's def Deep Purple

Absolute classic and this live album is one of their best ever performances

Still on the fence about live albums being on the list. Might as well throw greatest hits in as well. That said, this a great live record but I don't know if I need multiple takes of the same songs included.

As an actual listening experience, taken on its own, this is great. But that's because it's effectively a greatest-hits CD. There should be a rule on this list against greatest-hits CDs, on the basis that they're unfair, and I think it should extend to live albums if they contain the same material. That said, it's great. I love Blackmore's guitar, he's one of a kind. And their organ sound is great. I wish they could've cut it a couple years later and included some of the material on Burn. But I'm only gonna give it a 3.

A solid live album, and covered a lot of their hits. Usually doesn't translate well when it's live, but some of these songs are just way too long. Bloats the album.

Deep Purple is great, and the live album is good, but a bit too long. Sick drum solo though

Studio versions of the songs sound better for me.

Good stuff but a bit too long.

It ok, but it could have been drastically improved if it was shorter. Also probably would have appreciated it more had I been there.

They are definitely jamming hard, maybe just a little too over the top for my taste. The first few tracks where they don't go too wild with it are fantastic, shows what a talented band they were.

Has it’s moments

I do like a few songs but it feels self indulgent. I don’t see myself going back to it anytime in the future.

It started strong but died a little later on

Phenomenal musicians, and a killer live recording. The band are in conversation with one another throughout, extremely in tune with the songs they're playing and their bandmates. If I were a bigger Deep Purple fan, I might enjoy hearing them jam on these songs for 10 minutes a piece. But as is, 7 songs in 76 minutes is recommended to hardcore Deep Purple fans only. There's only so much improv one can take. I'd probably give this 3.5 if I could, but because I'm only just starting the 20-MINUTE final track and I've already grown tired, I'm going to round down.

Starts with three bangers, but quickly devolves into long, drawn-out solos or rambling nothingness. 5/10

This hard rock band can really wank! These guys are capable and deserving of their wankery (esp Blackmore), but sometimes it goes a tad too far. The guitar and organ really drive the exciting aspects of this band while the drummer beats the hell out of his kit and the bassist trades off simple static lines with more complex melodic ones. The wanking is energetic and heavy sometimes, and other times just goes on to be too self-indulgent that I lose interest (like when the guitar and vox circle jerk each other). I fit firmly in the middle here - sometimes I want to rip someone’s face off and sometimes I want to rip my own face off. The parts that rock fucking rock! But some of it just doesn’t work for me and I zip my brain pants back up.

It's pretty good, but i don't need 2 hours of it

Better than recorded versions

Oh thank god I can stop after disc one. Considering disc 2 seems to be the same song three times that's a blessing. Why do I never get long love albums when I'm working? Anyway it's enjoyable enough so far. Probably better than the studio recordings I heard recently on Machine Head and were fairly meh. Plus this has got Highway Star on it. Overall enjoyed well enough, running through town just in time to miss that train. Stopped after Speed King (1), that was plenty. Forgot black night, that's a good song.

While this challenge has changed my mind about live albums, it hasn’t changed my mind about long ass songs. This was decent, just longggg. Of course, “Highway Star” and “Smoke on the Water” are the standouts here. More of a 3.5.

I know this is a classic but it's a bit of a slog. Some really great versions of songs in here along with a lot of extended guitar noodling, drum solos and crowd work. The best part is probably the first half of Space Truckin before things go off the rails a bit. 3 stars because of the material but I'd rather listen to the studio versions for the most part.

It wears on you a bit. But

Probably excellent in its own way, but I struggled to sit through a full double album after having already had two other DP albums quite recently via this app.

It’s good quality music, but the drum solo (which are actually pretty good) and other extended rambles don’t mean that much to me because I wasn’t at the concert to capture the spirit of the moment. Of course, this is the danger of all live albums. I can give this a High 3, but probably deserves more if I experienced it live.

I can respect it, it's just not my cup of tea. Dad rock and it sounds so outdated. They can sure jam though.

No live albums! (even though this sounded like a fun show to be at)

This live recording captures raw energy, and any show from this compilation would have been an experience. The performances are tight. The first disc is a nice, complete ride. The second disc is a bunch of repeated songs from the three nights they were in Japan. It’s a solid listen, but could have been one disc with zero repeats.

Not sending their best

top 10 live album of all time....found it good

I don't mind a bit of self indulgence but this goes well over the top. Main tunes are great though

Better than what I was expecting. They were definitely loud and heavy and I’m sure they would have been an exciting live show in their day. But all the technical soloing and heaviness can’t make up for their weak ass songs. Jimmy Page had more riffs in his right pinkie than this band. This album is a detour to Meh City.

With any live album, you're really keying into the artist's performance itself as opposed to WHAT is being performed if that makes any sense. This is basically a greatest hits album at the end of the day, with each song having its own extended cut and flair. The sound mixing is also pretty damn crisp for being live. - the performance of "Highway Star" honestly sounded just as good as the studio recording, one of the highlights of this live album - drum solo on "The Mule" was pretty cool, albeit a bit long - capped by a 20 min performance of "Space Truckin'"...cool I guess... I actually enjoyed listening to this but I don't really see how live albums merit an inclusion on lists such as these, unless they are truly one of a kind and culturally significant (such as Johnny Cash's "At Folsom Prison" or Nirvana's "MTV Unplugged in New York" to name a select few). Regardless, I'd give this a low 3.

Great musicians, but too much instrumental for easy listening…otherwise good songs, but would probably never listen again

Pretty dope

This had a lot of highs, but some the interludes and drum solos were too long.

01) Highway Star - 6,0 02) Child In Time - 9,0 03) Smoke On The Water - 9,0 04) The Mule - 5,0 05) Strange Kind Of Woman - 7,0 06) Lazy - 6,0 07) Space Truckin' - 5,0 TOTAL: 6,71 (67/100) Current ranking: 171/230 Live, double album with only 7 songs of considerable length. What have we done to deserve this? This is definitely not one of the 1001 albums you need to listen to before you die. Unless you're a Deep Purple fan. I don't consider myself one.

Ok album

I don't really like live albums.

aaaaaaaaaaa

Hey, isn't that the song from Better Call Saul but LIVE!! Overall I thought the songs were good but would have preferred to not listen to it live as it has too many long unnecessary solos.

pretty good, I've listened to some Deep Purple and they never really clicked with me so this wasn't my favorite thing ever but it's still pretty enjoyable. great performances from everyone in the band (drumming and synths were really good), however, it's still a live album so it's never gonna be as great as a studio one. the mule kinda sucks though 3/5

No es el estilo de música que más me llama para escuchar en mi día a día pero es un disco que me pareció entretenido para escuchar. Deben ser una banda muy divertida para ver y aprecio que todos los temas hayan sido grabados en vivo.

This album helps me to understand why people like deep purple. The double live album is maybe more than I needed.

Solid, this must’ve been great irl

Didn’t know that deep purple was a jam band.

Good. Too much drum solo

Lovely pre iron maiden stuff, but why a live album?

The band was tight but the frantic pace was anxiety inducing. Never been a fan of the songs Deep Purple produced but they were definitely a solid band.

This album is wild. I normally dislike classic rock groups having long instrumental sections where the guitarist jerks off his guitar for way too long. This album has some of that, but it also has some neat, kind of experimental sections in it with synthesizers (I think), a drum solo that beats most others in my opinion, and excellent energy throughout. I enjoyed listening to it twice through, but it's unlikely I'll come back to this one. For what it is, it's pretty good.

The best of the live albums so far, but still an unnecessary live album with weird repetition on disc 2. We definitely liked this more than we thought we would, but would still choose a studio album.

Deep Purple good, live album bad

Decent album that really shows the versatility of deep purple. Very long!

Not a fan of the vast majority of live albums, and Deep Purple has never been high on my list of favorite bands. Still a decent listen.

I didn't mind this but it was way way too long.

I mean good musicianship but I don't resonate with it

Generic Rock! It’s generically rockin’!

"They are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock..." great example of first doesn't mean best child in time lazy

For a live album, I didn’t feel a lot of energy. Some of their extended live versions are great though.

Si estuviera en el concierto hubiera sido probablemente una de las mejores experiencias de mi vida. Pero es un álbum de canciones que ya he escuchado de álbumes previos. 2h+ btw.

Do the Japanese only clap on the 2 and the 4??

This is a cool live performance, by some obviously talented musicians. Truthfully though I only got through the first disc, it’s a little more jammy/solo based than I prefer. I imagine it would have been amazing in person.

Liking this more than I thought I was going to and, of course, am realizing that I know a few more Deep Purple songs than I thought. The “live” elements stood up for the most part - drum solo on “The Mule” was pretty entertaining - not sure if all my drummer friends would say the same but - sounded good to me. After listening all the way through, this album kinda sounds like someone needed a soundtrack and for a 70’s era period movie and some good studio musicians came out a week later and said —How about this? That isn’t necessarily a bad thing!

Good solid live album. Love deep purple anyway but musically fantastic

Not my cup of tea. For some reason it reminded me of the Runaway Five from Mother 2

I think I got a vinyl copy of this record from a thrift store when I was in high school. It's big, bombastic arena rock. It is aggressive and even a bit obnoxious with the long, rocking, excessive solos, etc. The album definitely rocks, but it's too much area excess to match my tastes well. Three stars.

Listened while on the rowing machine. Worked well for a workout!

I thought I'd enjoy this one more than I did. It wasn't bad just wasn't really my thing.

I can see the appeal of this music. I like the melodies, the hooks are truly memorable, the drums are amazing, the guitar work is something else. But. The tracks go on too long. I’m tired of them long before they’re over. Not really a fan of the scream singing.

I don’t really like live albums except for a very few outliers. This one is not one of them. Also, prog is not among my favourites and this album sees these amazing musicians go and show off.. kinda for the sake of showing off? Not my thing but I can still appreciate the skill. Deep Purple seems to me as one of these bands that everyone seems to agree they’re amazing but no one really listens to them except for a few snobby boomers that run these old rock radio stations. I was relieved to see that the second disc on Spotify is not really a part of the original release so I gladly skipped it, the first disc was more than enough.

Really fine live performances.

There are way too many live albums on here that aren’t Alive 2007 by Daft Punk. There are too many live albums on this list in general. Is it good? Yes. Very good. Incredible noodling and drum soloing throughout. Is it necessary to the list? ………..

Strong rock sound. Very long songs, drag on with the instrumentals but I imagine they were excellent live. Good quality sound for live album. I only recognized Smoke on the Water so was happy to hear more of their music.

Not looking for live albusm

Live album so loses a point Good guitar riffs

Pretty cool classic rock noodling. Favourite tracks: Highway Star, The Mule (for that sick drum solo), Space Truckin'.

Some pretty good songs. Don't need the second disc since it's just repeated tracks mostly and I don't need to listen to a bunch of songs over and over again

- ok well the artist’s name is deep purple so an automatic win - rock music. based on the album cover I had thought it was going to be jazz - some INSANE riffs going on here - guitar is just incredible - assuming these guys are british - defo good concentration study album (in blast them thoughts out typa category), workshop album. some scream singing so might become annoying dep on ear day - spotify description is killer. emojis - strange kind of woman - vocals echoing guitar back & forth, love hearing what i do all the time in real music - there are seven songs but it is an hour and sixteen minutes long. ee - LOVE the guitar at the end of lazy specifically - 3/5. probably won’t listen to much again but still approve

3.5 stars. I was apprehensive about this album, as I typically don't enjoy 70s rock. I also don't usually enjoy live albums. However this performance was definitely aided by the energy of a live show. Songs like "Smoke on the Water," which I've heard a million times, is more bearable with its different flourishes and personal touches. I did find my head bobbing along, as I tried not to think about how each song was going to be 12 minutes

Deep Purple mais en live

Stellar recording, including a live Smoke On The Water version. For me their jamming ranged from fun to boring. This is probably fine as an album to listen to in the background. Fave is Strange Kind Of Woman.

Not sure 20 minute long drum solos translate when you're not there. Some good rock wails

Who did it better: Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple? The answer is Zeppelin but this is still an astonishingly tight live performance

not much to say, its decent rock and too long. strong 6/10

Two 2+ hour albums in a row for me! (Metallica’s S&M yesterday). Fantastic musicianship, it’s clear these guys were masters of their trade. I’m sure a true Deep Purple fan would gladly sit through the whole live recording but it was too much on the long side for me.

My dad handed my down his vinyl, this one was in the stack. Never listened to it on vinyl but do know of deep purple and stoked to actually listen to this. I did not know they were Highway star. This shit is rocking.

Fun rock album. That’s a hard working guitar player.

High 3

I like the instrumental section in the later part of Child in Time, I like Smoke on the Warer, I kind of like Lazy (prefer instrumental parts to vocal parts), I kind of like Space Truckin (the shorter version is preferable)

I think this was the first repeat artist that I’ve had. So you know deep purple is pretty cool, and I probably would’ve been into them when they were fresh.

Very nice. Weird having a live album on here though

Very good in the car album/band

Classic rock for sure. I’m sure fans of the band love this record, but for me all of the solos were indulgent and were almost stepping over into jam band territory.

I am sorry i did not listen to this album because i did not have much time yesterday. But when i listened to the first song it was almost masterful so i might listen to this later. It might have potential so i will rate it 3 stars for the one song alone.

Great guitar riffs, felt like I was in the backseat of my dads car circa 2004 again.

I'm really starting to get sick of rock, even though this is undeniably a pretty good live performance.

Rating: 6/10 Good live album, they really focused on the improvisations which I was not the biggest fan of always. I enjoy the studio recordings of the songs more than this so I will not be coming back to this, even though it was an enjoyable listen overall.

Brilliant songs smothered by drug-fuelled self-indulgence. Can't imagine how busy the bogs were during The Mule.

Cool live performance that I would have loved to see the audience's reaction to

J'aime beaucoup Deep Purple, mais ces versions live sont longues. Ça a dû être très cool d'être sur place, mais perso j'aurais préféré écouter les versions album originales.

I like live albums more than most. Good album that could have done without the long drum solo.

Canciones épicas, canciones legendarias, pero algunas demasiado largas. Solos de bateria!

not a huge fan of live

I like Deep Purple but not big on live albums.

Not bad, but not super interesting.

Man this brought me back to playing Rock Band in the basement. Was awesome to hear a song im so familiar with yet sounds so different to the original recording, didnt know where the solos were gunna take me. Just the complete embodiment of the 80s, Child in Time had a sick tempo switch about 4 minutes in and then is followed by like a 3 and a half minute guitar solo. Giving Masayoshi Takanaka vibes. Smoooooooooke onthe waaaaaaater. The drum solo in The Mule I just kept thinking JK Simmons was there raising his hand up as the tempo built. Wild. Front man seems like a silly guy, especially in Strange Kind of Woman. Rest of the album was pretty good but yeah the last song dragged on for too long when just listening, probably much better to be there but alas, i wasnt born for another 22 years.

decente

lots going on. really great version of smoke on the water. almost comically long drum solo. a little tooo raw and free wheeling. like what would happen if we all got too stones and jammed?

So awesome ! But Live? 😅

this is how the gutters were sounding back in the days.

It sounds like they were having a lot of fun at this concert. I wasn't there, so I didn't have as much fun.

In case you ever need a 6 minute drum solo, we've got you covered.

Great album from a legendary band. Starred 3 songs. Love their southern rock and blues sound.

Great live album. Awesome vocals, guitar solos, etc. Some of the songs drag on a it, and I'm not sure I need another 9 minute drum solo (besides Bonzo's in "Moby Dick"). But still an excellent showcase of a talented and influential band and the magic they could create in person together. Would've loved to have attended one of these shows.

Live albums are usually not my thing but this album did exhibit a good recording quality from the technology available in 1972. The set list did not include one of their bigger hits "Woman From Tokyo" but did include "Highway Star" and of course "Smoke On The Water". Good songs but too many solos and improvisations. 3 stars.

Forgive me Father for I have sinned. I've never cared for the Grateful Dead or jam band music. This really dragged on for me. +1 for the drum solo.

I don't get why this album is on this list. I mean it's not a bad album by any means, but I feel like a live album on this list would have to be included because it captured something spectacular. I wouldn't call this spectacular. Deep Purple is a band with unquestionably good musicians, but I don't know why this album would be special. It's good for sure, but I would imagine that Machine Head is on this list that would basically make the inclusion of this record sort of superfluous. 3/5 because it's a good album but probably not one that really needs to be included here.

I liked this a lot but Machine Head is already on the list? Absolutely no reason for both albums to be on this

A good live album. I love the audience reactions to each song - very polite.

Insane guitar and fun songs

Live concerts are just better in person, rather than on albums. A lot of great studio albums are missing on this list but we get this Deep Purple album basically twice because most of these songs are also released on a studio album which is included on this list. They are very good musicians but they showed off a lot which resulted in very long solos and overall a long double album.

Cool album but why is a collection of live tracks on this list? Especially when some of these are on another album already on the list. 3/5, would've been a 4 if it wasn't just a collection of live tracks, some of which not from this album.

Amazing drum and guitar solos. I could do without some of the screaming- or maybe I am just getting old. I am not usually a big fan of live albums (with some exceptions) but this one is pretty solid and an amazing band

After pressing play on this album, I thought that it was going to be an easy five or four stars. I have a soft spot for Deep Purple, even though I don't play them a lot. They have some good songs and, as this was a live album, it seemed like you would get the hits. BUT as it went on, I got a bit irritated by the excessive noodling. This is probably a weird complaint from someone that likes Led Zeppelin's live noodlings (which this reminded me of) and jazz and weird prog electronica nonsense, but I wasn't into it. Some of the noodling was great, but all of it seemed like too much.

Getting a little sick of the "classic rock" genre, but impressive musicianship.

Better than I thought. Not sure how often I would stop and listen in a rotation.

Good live album, the audience was quiet during to songs - due to nationality of recording I’m not sure. Was familiar with ‘Smoke on the Water’ but several other great songs too. “Disc 2” was weird as it was the same encore (?) songs from different dates, so I only listened thru each unique song.

I like Deep Purple quite a lot, but five of the seven songs on this live album originate from two studio albums also on this list, and I don't believe the live versions are revelatory enough to warrant double-dipping, sooo what are we doing here?

One great song but irritating vocals

There's certainly some potential here. Classic rock and roll (with all the good and bad that entails). Definitely some enjoyable moments but some that just drag on way too long (looking at you drum and screeching guitar solos). A 6.5/10 (3.25/5)

I'm not really into live albums but this one was nicely recorded and captured good energy

Too.much wanking. Had high expectations for this one

⭐️⭐️⭐️ lots of jamming instrumental sections- 2 hour long album

an album composed entirely of mildly enjoyable guitar solos

Tangent review...first live albums have never been my thing unless it is a band I absolutely love and/or have seen in person. I just feel like I miss so much of the context, what was happening, the crowd size and energy and other details, and that makes the crowd noise just seem like background dissonance (purely my feelings). That being said I do enjoy that this was a concert that does not feel purely prescribed and every detail planned (not saying those experiences are bad, just different and more the norm today). All in all it was a fine album and it sounds like the fans enjoyed it, but I am not a major fan so I would have just as much enjoyed the songs in a studio recording. I do hope they sang more than 7 songs at the concert, while they were long, seems like I would have been disappointed that is all I heard.

talent

decent jam rockish shit. not my thing, but i feel like my parents would love it. pretty good overall

The solos are really fast as if the recording is 50% faster. A bit too much improvisation in my opinion. And why is there a live album on the list?

Ok, so, I like Deep Purple, but i think that many of the songs here have really long guitar solos, it's like "ok fine, you know how to play on live".

Props to Deep Purple for setting the live album format that would become ubiquitous in Rock, but this particular live recording felt a bit too self-indulgent and (my copy at least was) far too little gain. Between performances speech on the mic would be nearly indiscernible.

WOW! I did not know that I liked Deep Purple. Good mix of hard rock, groove, and psychedelic. So many great riffs and solos but sorta feels like nothing really gels for me. I love Space Trucking but 19 minutes? damn. I love an extended live jam but 10 minutes in and I'm pretty Trucked out. The Truck really goes off the rails. I'm sure you had to be there. I'll have to check out some of their studio albums.

Shoutout Japan for knowing how to clap on-beat Pretty indifferent to jam bands and live albums but this seems like a solid jam band live album. Plenty of tasty licks

Seems like this was the live album that started live albums. Sounded great.

Quite enjoyed my slice of classic rock this week but I don’t tend to love live albums and there was a bit more on the jammy side here. It lacked a bit of punch and cohesion for my liking but a lot of fun.

Originated Smoke on the Water, which I thought was by Led Zepplin this entire time. They are the definition of heavy metal but two hours of the somewhat same “waaah waaaah waaahhhhhh” rift is a bit too long.

he escuchado la intro de smoke on the water en guitarra muchas más veces de las que me gustaría, igual no estuvo tan mal

Ok, famous classic with some very good tracs

This isn't universally true, but I generally prefer studio albums over live albums and that holds here. I enjoyed the rockin' on this album, and in some ways it's fun to hear them jam a bit so this was still plenty enjoyable, I just found myself wishing for a cleaner version. 3.5.

2.7 - Talented musicians but indulgent and not as cool as they think they are

A completely fine album. I listened through once and barely remembered any of it (except Highway Star, but that could be Guitar Hero nostalgia). I thought maybe I wasn't paying enough attention so I started listening through again. Two hours was too much for a full second listen but I am unmoved. Also, I’m not sure how I feel about listening to a live recording when I’m not familiar with the studio version. I like to compare. Maybe one day I will listen to the studio cuts of the new to me songs. I have a feeling this band is better live (guitar solos, etc.)

De tout les excellent albums de Deep Purple, POURQUOI ILS ONT PRIS UN ALBUM LIVE

It had its moments. The solo on child in time was cool. Space trucking was long but had some good parts in it. Overall not bad. Too long though.

Solid live album that I enjoyed more than expected. Certainly plays into the 70s rock era with its overly long guitar and drum solos but the band was better than expected.

guitar heavy hard rock Psychedelic rock

I have to say, I’m disappointed. When I saw we had deep purple, I was excited to get hard rock album that I could really get into. However, I can’t tell if it’s because it was live or if it’s because I was listening to it through my phone, but it just didn’t live up to my expectations. It obviously wasn’t bad and when I heard the smoke on the water riff, I was ecstatic however, I’m not sure, but something felt like it was missing.

I'm sorry to these men but if you told me this was pink floyd I would believe you. idk if that's a good or bad thing

Live version of some of their hits, extended with lengthy guitar solos. Not bad, but I would have preferred the studio versions.

Not a big fan of live albums, but this one is alright. Definitely planting the seeds for Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.

Some classics, and therefore not a bad album. Tip: If you have the feeling that all songs on the album have the same dynamic range and you use Spotify, turn off volume normalization. To me it sounded much better without it.

Decent classic rock album Nothing out of note to pick this album out of a lineup

This band was a pillar of classic rock, and a few of their classics are on this album. 1. Drum solos are often disappointing. 2. Guitar solos have progressed significantly in the last 40 years. 3. There is a segment where the singer is mimicking what the guitarist is playing. They were having fun, but it was not that great to listen to.

Ok. Can't seem to get into DP

Enjoyed this.

Of all the live albums I’ve heard, this is certainly one of them!

Classic live album from a classic rock band. That being said 13 songs with over 2hrs of runtime is not my preference.

Eh. It's a great recording, there is no doubt about it, and the musicians are very talented. However, the noodling solos are much too long. I love live music, and recordings of live shows, but this isn't for me.

Another reviewer hit the nail on the head with this. These are great songs but they are on other albums too so they shouldn't really count? Great live album by a great band but there are other albums that should be in this...

The hits. But with more noodle.

Vobec by mi nevadilo, keby tu neboli zive albumy :D

Highway Star - 10/10 Child in Time - 6/10 Smoke on The Water - 10/10 The Mule - 7/10 Strange Kind of Woman - 8/10 Lazy - 7/10 Space Truckin' - 8/10 TOTAL - 56/70

Favorite Tracks: Highway Star Child in Time The Mule

Smoooke on the waaaater, is way better than it has any right to be.

Not sure how I feel about having a live album in this, but Space Truckin' alone brought this thing up to a 3. What a journey.

Some of the same songs from the other album, 2nd Deep Purple album for me, why is it on the list?? They're good, music is good, I still enjoyed the album, just thought it was a whole new album instead of a live version of their other ones. The fact it is live is great though.

I love Deep Purple but this one woulda been better to experience live. The album turned ho-hum.

Aikamoinen livekokemus.

Don’t love his voice live but good classic jam of rock songs

I’ve been trying to decide for a while how much I like recorded concert music. Seems like Deep Purple did a great job at this concert though because sometimes live recordings sound terrible compared to studio recordings. I only know Deep Purple from the classic “Smoke On The Water,” and can’t say I feel like I’ve been missing out on anything. All of the classic rock boxes seem to be checked (with a gigantic Sharpie) by Led Zeppelin and others better than Deep Purple and worse than Led Zep. I guess they deserve a place in history for helping develop hard rock, but LZ is just so much better in every way (opinion) Cool to hear some experimentation with sounds on this album. This whole thing is probably best listened to loud on a large system and I was confined to Bluetooth earbuds, so I’m probably not giving this album a fair shake. I bet better stream quality and sonic reproduction would do wonders to any album we’re trying out here, I just don’t have time and familial cooperation to listen to all of these at home. Three stars.

Good but not my taste

AC/DC esk. good album. Highway star is real good.

Boring. Idiomatic reliance

I appreciate the higher octane versions of some of their classic songs.

Solid, very heavy hitting up front, but towards the middle/end it lost my attention.

Very solid record I got bored/distracted listening. Should give another listen

Overall, it was good, namely because the lead singer has some serious pipes. Every time he screamed at me, I feel like it snapped me out of a daze induced by a 5+ minute jam session. There’s like a 7 minute jazz drum solo on one of the songs. At first, I thought it was pretty cool, then it just wouldn’t stop. 10 & 20 minute songs are not uncommon and it felt like an eternity getting through the album. It absolutely had its high points, though.

While I understand the pride here comes from the quality of the music playing, I do struggle to see why one may prefer most of these versions to that of their studio counterparts. At the end of the day, it's a Deep Purple album, and you know what that means? Three stars! Truly the band of all time!

There are a lot of fun and impressive moments in this album. But I can't help but feel like half of it is just filler.

I'm not sure if it's a 3 or 4, I liked it but it was very long.

It's good, but the songs are toon long. I prefer the studio version.

-i do love a live album so im excited for this -i think this is the first live album i’ve gotten? -loving the screamy rock going on -why is the same song on here three different times. i get it was performed at different places and times but is there a real reason why -these songs are really good, but i think live albums are better when you know and love the original songs -having said that, the songs itself are good from what i can tell -the guitar and drum solos are fun

Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for me. Enjoyed the noises in Child in Time which had to be the highlight.

Highlight: Highway Star. In a nutshell: “Can we have everything louder than everything else?” The Simpsons episode “Weekend At Burnsie’s” kinda ruined “Smoke On The Water” for me. All I could hear was a stoned Homer singing the lines wrong and I couldn’t stop laughing. Overall: 6/10

Pretty good. Middle school me would have LOVED this. 53 year old me likes it a lot.

I enjoy Deep Purple but I don't care for live albums

63/100

Great performances slightly let down by going on far too long than they need to.

A bit of a slog, but ok in the background. Definitely way too long, and I feel like live albums lose something when you're literally not there with the performance. Also makes it more difficult to imagine a time and place to set the album, which I like to do. 04/10/23

Good for a live album. Particularly in the showmanship on the drums.

Not a fan of live albums. But this one seemed chipped as well. Wasn’t one continuous flow.

1. The solo in highway star is much better on the studio album. It's cleaner, and packs more of a punch. The solo in the live cut felt like the guitarist was saying "hold my beer" while clearly having had a few too many beers. 2. Holy lots of screaming batman. Somewhere, somewhen someone was high and thought this was the greatest song ever written, I'd disagree. Holy shit, did they steal a riff from Achilles last stand?! Good lord long solo is long. It's not bad, but I think you have to be a big fan of them to dig this and I'm not. Nice ending though! Oh shit, that's not the ending, we're only halfway in! Skipping to next track. 3. Ok, I'm a sucker for british singers explaining shit live before a song...i get chills every time. More bands should do this - it's intimate, makes the show feel special. So many bands just come on, do their thing, and leave. This is a classic song, it's great, the bass is amazing in this live cut. A++ 4-7: rest of the album plays out like I expected the rest. It's not the worst thing I have heard, and I like Deep Purple well enough, but live albums aren't usually my thing unless I REALLY like the band.

It’s good rock music but very long and not wholly my thing, some interesting blues and jazz influences

Difficult to balance my fondness for Deep Purple, my delight at the track selection and the talent of the musicians against the fact this is a live album. Honestly, Deep Purple are great and this album.. Isn't. Because I'm not interested in the showboatery of a twiddly lead guitar solo. I don't care about audience participation, and I'd far, far rather listen to music being the best it can be rather than "the best it can be live".

Aside from Highway Star and Smoke on the Water this wasn’t too much for me. Especially Strange Kind of Woman, I did not need to hear a screech followed by a guitar mimicking that same screech. Also… that drum solo.

Real jammy. Long drum solos. Long guitar solos. Fine, just not my speed.

Ok live album. Not as big a fan of the songs, so hearing long solos strung throughout wasn’t my thing. I can see the historical significance, but won’t listen to this again

Apart from ‘Smoke On The Water’ I can’t say I know a single Deep Purple song. And I hate live albums, but this music drowns out the crowd so +1. It also really helps that there are no singalongs or clapalongs (Producers, take note). Highway Star: Bad ass metal keyboards! Tasty guitar solos! Heavy guitar, heavy drums, heavy vocals - I never realized Purple was *this* metal. I am transformed. Child In Time: Such musical drumming! I didn’t need to look up his bio to know there’s some jazz in his background. All hail Ian Paice! Again with the keyboards! My face can only melt so much! CONTINUE MELTING IT. I mean it as a compliment when I say there is something delightfully old school about these guys. Especially remarkable because in their heyday they were considered pioneers. Ah sunrise, sunset. Holy s*** Ian Gillan! Somewhere in Sutton Coldfield, little Robbie Halford is getting ideas… Smoke: Ah yes, here it is. A Voyager 3 should be launched to the Oort Cloud to do nothing more than play this riff over and over for all eternity. The Mule: Ooooo nooooooo this album needs a big red label on the front WARNING: CONTAINS ABSURDLY EXCESSIVE DRUM SOLO. Sorry, Ian, you’re still a metal god - no need to over-do it, bro. Strange Kind of Woman & Lazy: Hmmm. Back half of this album is less metal and more like an overblown jam session. The last few tracks are just passing around solos. Lazy could slip into an Allman Bros live album unnoticed. Space Truckin: Now we’re talkin’! More, please! This is primordial stuff - roots of ELP and other prog rockers to follow, but stirred up with tight, clean riffs and cosmic metal sensibilities. Hell yeah, Ian G goes off again! OMG YES JON LORD PLEASE PUT MY FACE BACK WHEN YOU ARE DONE MELTING IT, SIR. Absolutely galactic keyboard work, here. I am so glad I stuck it out to this final track - totally worth the finale. HELL YEAH COMMANDER JON FIRE THE PHOTON LASERS! Ha! Little metal icing on the cake with 4” to spare! Nice touch, just to remind everyone the Truck has returned them to earth’s orbit safe and sound. These dudes played their audience all the way out the door and left no survivors. Arigato, Osaka, goodnight. \m/ \m/

Too long.

La première partie est quand meme malade, Child in time Smoke under water, highway star. Ca dérape trop our moi après strange kind of women, Pourtant j'ador ela chanson space truckin sur machine head3.5

- as far as live albums go, this one was very well done - enjoyed the jammin , didn’t love the long drum solo

Good but didnt have enough time to enjoy right

Komiasti se soi myös livenä. Tällä keikalla olisin varmasti viihtynyt.

Kokonaisuudessaan hieno livesetti, mut kakkoslevyn pointti toistaa samoja jiisejä eri päiviltä meni vähän ohi ja pudotti pisteitä

This one really feels like a parody of itself. It's so over the top. Kinda love it kinda hate it. Probably won't come back to it very often

These guys go hard and deep, but the twenty-five minute drum solos are probably much better in person.

70s bro party rock

As far as live albums go, this one wasn't too bad. The recording quality was excellent, and Rickie Blackmore's guitar playing is incredibly clear and precise unlike some other guitarists of that time whose playing is often muddled live. The album was too long and the last two songs started to drag, but it was an impressive live album.

One of classic rock’s quintessential live albums. Perhaps too long and overwhelmingly indulgent, but stellar renditions of Highway Star and Space Truckin’ are enough to recommend it.

I will preface this by saying I am a jam band lover. I typically like long live jams of songs. The talent showcased on this album is immense. I won't deny that. However, it does feel a bit masturbatory at times. Lots of the songs seemed to jam with endless solos yet no real direction for the song to go into, if that makes any sense. I also got tired of the lead singer's voice pretty quickly. I just cant stand that YAAAA yelp.

Legendary band and the solos are quite entertaining as they extend their greatest hits in this live album. But after 30 minutes there is not much more offered by it.

the fountainhead of butt rock

Good live album, but... meh?

I didn’t mind most of the tracks, but each one was just too long.

It was OK. As individual songs, they were really good and has definite historical value as an influential album, but the extended live versions became somewhat self-indulgent and, well, annoying. Would give it four stars for its place in rock history, but it gets knocked down to 3 for the excessive musical rambling.

Genres: Hard rock, heavy metal Formed: London, England in 1968 Run time: 13 songs, 2 hours, 2 min This is a double live album, recorded during their first tour of Japan in August 1972. It is a great live album containing some of their best known songs. The track “Black Night” appears three times on disk 2 and “Speed King” appears twice. Spotify: Least popular song: almost 242k Most popular song: over 2.2M. Despite the group's popularity this album isn’t massively popular on Spotify. Presumably people prefer the studio versions of the songs. I love Deep Purple, but I cannot stand the screaming in the track “Child In Time”. I would have left for the bar when it came on (and I don’t drink). But a bottle would have been purchased and thrown at the singer well before the 12 minute mark! Listen Again?: No My Rating: ***

Pretty rocking, but I don't like live recordings

After the first three songs, I was unsure as to why so many people had a problem with this record. Sure the songs were long, but they didn't overstay their welcome and had a real force behind them; the second half of the record illuminated those criticisms I had seen. As someone who loves longer music (Swans are my favorite artist), the performances start to drag and lack a sense of direction, sure there are great moments or stretches of a couple minutes, but the totality of the later songs lack a certain cohesiveness that the first three had in spades.

Eerste helft is hele dikke prima.

Sounds nice and quite a jam if they weren't stretched into overambitious lengths of 7 minutes and even reaching 19 freaking minutes.

Interesting that this would be on the list but not their album "Machine Head" which has the original studio recordings of "Smoke on the Water" and "Highway Star". Maybe this is the author of 1001 album's personal tastes coming through in the list a little bit... (we'll see if "Machine Head" comes in later) "Highway Star" is such a badass rock anthem. One of the best songs to hear while you are alone in your car and flying down a highway. "Smoke On The Water" --> one of the best rock riffs of all time. Usually in the conversation for best of all time. What a weird thing to do live though to variate it the second time you play it. It's so simple and people want to hear the riff itself, not some variation. Small thing but just a little odd. The rest of the performance was solid. Tight 3/5 album. Still curious about the choice of a live album for some of these tracks.

I like some DP but this too repetitive for me. Good in its day

I cant rock lol

A great live performance of songs I don’t like. Musicianship and tightness is superb - but for some reason I can’t forget my ambivalence to Deep Purple. Also the Spinal Tap level of self indulgence kind of makes it a harder to digest. Still a good listen but not something I’m ever really going to seek out specifically again.

"Smoke on the Water" is one of the peaks of white-boy rock. It's very good, but it strikes me as music for people that don't know how to dance. (To be fair, this could be said of a fair bit of hard rock). This is basically the hard rock version of yacht rock. I can see some boomers listening to this, sipping their gin and tonic, and saying "This rocks!" 3 1/2 stars, rounding down.

I really enjoyed a handful of songs. I think some of the live stuff took away from the listening experience so I’ll take this as a sign to check out more studio albums.

Does any live set need three drum solos? There is, however, fun to be had amidst the onanistic technical performance. I quite like the gentle trolling at the start of Smoke on the Water where the riff almost gets played then walked away from. Very funny. The songs are also good. Just needlessly bulked out with unnecessary solos. As I believe Zappa once said to Satriani, "If I wanted to watch you w*nk I'd have stuck a camera in the toilet."

A couple of classic songs on here as well as some long as hell jams. It's a good sampler of what it might be like to be at a concert for Deep Purp. Would be great to watch this as a film to see the guys play in their prime!

Pretty solid album - they're a talented bunch.

Stodgy 70s rock.nothing wrong with it but not really my taste. Again this is one of those live albums that gets lost in translation. None of the energy you should feel is there

As a spotty long haired youth i used to be a big fan but now I find them a cringingly spinal tappish combo. Gillan voice wears on me and Lords classical noodling seem to quaint. Still, if you buy one DP album this is the one.

I mean it's Deep Purple live album and it's a good one at that. Still I think you will only like this if you already like Deep Purple and I'm not sure this should be on the list at it's not really an studio album but more a compilation of songs. The long solos i think are fun if know the tracks and can appreciate the differences from the album versions but otherwise I imagine they can drag on. I would recommend listening to the studio albums (or a greatest hits) if you are not a big fan already. Since i know all these songs i enjoyed it though. I still think smoke on the water is a bad song but it might be due to the mandatory music classes in primary school where thirty 9-year-olds on thrity out of tune guitars played smoke on the water on the E string.

The issue with live albums of artists you haven't heard before is that you can't tell where the original track ends and the embellishments begin. An avid fan already has that familiarity with the track and so appreciates the additional stuff performed during concert. But it's all new to a new listener, so when those embellishments start and tracks can last 20 minutes, it can be hard to stay engaged. This album gets 3 stars because I do like what I've heard, but I'll need to visit the studio versions to see if Deep Purple are an artist I'll follow.

The tracks on this album were decent but I really didn't need all the excessive live jamming that just went on for way too long. Not sure exactly why this is included on the list considering the summary literally describes how the band didn't want to do this but their Japanese label thought it would be good for publicity... talk about selling out. 2.5/5

good but live... ARG

A live performance steeped in high-energy, some epic drum solos. I wasn't too taken with the actual music though

Solid live classic rock, not as hard as you would expect given all the talk of setting the stage for Heavy Metal...

The history of Made In Japan's reception is alarming: I can only conclude that we went from having way too much fun to failing to have any fun at all. The grain of salt is that I enjoy a decent drum solo, the smear the band makes of time here, playing a few ideas out but saving a few to the end.

"Made in Japan" almost didn't exist. Deep Purple did not want to release a live album, seeing no way to replicate their explosive live set on record. When their touring engineer presented them with these recordings, the label were fanatic about them, and the band begrudgingly went along with a professional release (partly to stifle bootleg recordings and partly to jump on a similar trend by other groups). 50 years on, now the hype has dimmed and the purpose of release is null and void, this 70 minute, 7 track album has retained a lot of its power, but the indulgence of it all hasn't quite stood up to time. The best thing about "Made in Japan" is the added vitality that the studio versions can't quite match. Deep Purple perfectly fused raw metal power with virtuoso performances and sheer exhilaration, and that's perhaps more evident here than I've ever heard before. From the get-go, "Highway Star" blows the roof off. Ian Paice's drumming ups the tempo, Roger Glover fuzzes out his bass, Ritchie Blackmore throws in increasingly blistering guitar runs, and Ian Gillan retains the powerhouse vocals of the studio version with just a little more grit. It's a real thrill, and the peak of the whole record. The main issue is that every track is stuffed out to breaking point, with only "Highway Star" and "Smoke on the Water" maintaining a brevity of seven minutes. "Child in Time"'s dramatic build in intensity, though still powerful, is undermined when the heavier sections are dragged out for several days, losing any sense of climax. "The Mule" begins well but quickly dissolves into a seven minute (yes, SEVEN MINUTE) drum solo from Paice. There are frequent interludes of extended solos, dragged out crashing endings, Gillan's wordless call-and-response with Blackmore, and long stretches of feedback and sonic experimentation. "Space Truckin'" is the worst offender, at a needless twenty minutes. Everybody knows Jon Lord was a phenomenal keyboard player: he's wonderful throughout the whole album and makes his mark on "Truckin'", mining the depths of his instrument and lifting phrases from famous classical pieces (I spotted Holst's "Jupiter" among others). While it must have been a thrill to experience live, it's a tough listen when removed from the atmosphere and the visuals. And therein lies the main problem with "Made in Japan": expertly performed and essential for hardcore Deep Purple fans, but a real struggle as an album-length listen. Perhaps the band were right all along, in assuming their barnstorming live act could never quite be captured on recordings. You just had to be there.

Great sounding live record. Need to check out more Deep Purple before I can have a better appreciation for this.

I expected to give this album 2 stars since it's missing Pictures of Home, my favorite from Machine Head (3 stars). During Child in Time I was ready to give this 5 stars. 50+ minutes later I've settled down to 3

This might make some people mad, but I flip-flopped between being slightly intrigued, being utterly bored to death, and being extremely agitated by this album. Maybe I'm missing something?

Pretty cool jam album, live albums aren't really my thing but these guys did go pretty hard. Few tracks went on a bit long. Smoke on the water is an all time classic, was great hearing a live version

It's alright. I like Deep Purple but this one was a bit challenging. There was an inordinate amount of sudden-onset screeching that was deeply unpleasant and a lot of vocals that, had this not been a live album, would have absolutely been retracked. I mean, there's some just gnasty out-of-tune vocals here. It's not their best showing, TBH. Not sure why this one's on the list.

Not my type of music.

It's good, but would rather have the LP

Oh Gawd I'd forgotten about the never-ending drum solo in 'The Mule'. Why, oh Why. Plenty better 70s live albums than this, including by Deep Purple! Still, Gillan's voice is mostly great, and Jon Lord's keyboards and of course Ritchie's guitar and licks are legendary.

I have never been more conflicted by listening to an album. There were moments where I marvelled at their quite frankly stunning musicianship. However, others where I couldn't help but think the whole thing felt self-indulgent. 2 hours of a man imitating the sound of a guitar. His vocal range seemed impressive the first time he did it, but after 10 minutes, it felt like a chore. 1 star for being legends, 1 star for amazing music, 1 star for some classic tunes but that'll do. I just hope the crowd enjoyed it

Ég er ekkert mikið fyrir live upptökur. Þetta er samt í skárra lagi. Gillian er alveg svakalegur í distortion scream-unum sínum!

Same as last album. Not bad, just not for me.

It's alright but just too long

Great musicians but not my style

I'm not a big fan of the band, although I sometimes enjoy listening to some songs. This release is too much show-off and less good music, but it's pretty clear why they reach so much success in the 70s until today. After almost one hour of show-off how good they were playing, "Lucille" caught me and ended the album at a very high level. Still far from something that I'll listen to any other day.

J'ai passé un agréable moment au sein de la famille de mon camarade d'écoute robchimisteoubijoutière, à savoir son ermite de père de la caverne à vinyls, le batteur de Deep Purple et rob lui même.

Wow, is this a long album. It also repeats the same song three times on side one... Or at least, the expanded edition does, for some reason. It's cool to get into a stellar groove, but much how I feel with most jammy music, the lulls can be very, very dull. Favorite tracks: "Smoke On the Water", "Space Truckin'"

0-3-5, 0-3-6-5… not bad, but pretty boring after a while

I'm sure the concert was great. Maybe if I'd been there I'd enjoy this album more. As it stands, it's good music just they jam way too long to be enjoyable outside of the actual attendance.

Classic Hard Rock album Great guitar licks and keyboards, but it does show its age

Not my thing but alright.

Yeah I mean, nice solos, but jeez did it overstay its welcome. I liked it though. I'd say solid 3 (I'm retroactively giving wizard rungren a 2). Normally I'd give +1 stars for an album being entirely live, but a 4 feels very wrong for something that was nice but nothing I'll come back to.

Probablement l'un des meilleurs album live j'ai entendu, les solos étaient plus intéressants que j'aurais pensé. Mais il y avait quand même des longueurs.

Although I can appreciate the quality of this band’s performance and I appreciate the quality of the live recording, I wasn’t really into it.

This was going along pretty great until after Smoke on the Water and its holy trinity of rock chords. Long spoodily, uninteresting solos made the rest feel like an eternity. The band sure does sound great live and the songs are good but these jammy solos get a big no-thank-you from me.

Since this is a live album the listening experience is a little different. The songs are all great and the band is putting on great performances. Hearing the crowd also gets me excited as well, especially on the disc 2 recording the crowd is especially energetic on those. Hearing live performances is always special compared to studio recordings as songs live feel much rawer and they have an energy to them the studio songs can't match. The band's live additions and extensions to the songs are generally good but on certain songs, I think they overextend went too long. Like the slow quiet section in the mule, these moments show up in a few songs and took the momentum away. Another issue I had was the repeated songs on disc 2 as Black night appears 3 times and speed king 2 times, there are only 6 songs on disc 2. While I enjoyed all the recordings it felt to repetitive listing to them again so close. I would like to single out the smoke on the water performance as it was my favourite and I really enjoyed what they did with the live version. Fav: Smoke on the water, Black night, speed king Least fav: 7/10 - pretty good
