Reviews (page 5 of 9)

Cool album, but it's long and I kinda struggled making it through.

This shit rocks but you lose points for that drum solo which is very long and very bad.

Its not bad but the songs are very long

I realized that a large part of the scores that albums on this list receive have nothing to do with the album itself, but rather with its presence on the list and the absence of albums that people like. I understand the point, especially as a Latin American and seeing one mediocre album after another when I would have liked to see more music from other regions, But I know that's not the point of this list, and I try to enjoy what it presents; that's the challenge that makes it fun. This is a very good album; personally, I prefer the studio versions. At times it gets very long and revolves around things that are great live, But not for listening to on a record, and that ends up negating the good things it conveyed to me at various moments.

Pretty cool. I usually listen to the studio albums though

It's pretty sick but it does have that like slightly inaccessible element that you get when you have a double live album, like this is basically a jam record for the fans and I can't say I'm a devoted fan of Deep Purple or anything so it's more of a 3

Upon my third Deep Purple album listen on this list, I finally had to google whether Spinal Tap was directly based on them. The results were mixed, but I still believe. So much stupidity on this album AND YET I gave into the very stupid 20 minute version of Space Trucking and now I might be stupid too. Hello Cleveland!

Deep Purple is a band that I can never seem to wrap my head around. I can never remember who they are, what they're know for, etc. I realize that's ridiculous. But anyway, I wasn't expecting to enjoy this at all. I did enjoy it...more or less. I appreciate how completely over-the-top this show must have been. I'm sure it was an absolute blast to be there. With that said, I have no intention of digging into their catalog, or making sense of the complicated history of all of their comings and goings. And the last two tracks went on for way too long.

A bit indulgent in places. Classic rock

Great sounding live album. Drifts into self indulgence here and there

Great musician talent, strong sound for a live album

i know "smoke on the water" and that's about it. oh, i know "highway star" "child in time" isn't bad, but 12 minutes? it was so long, i had to check if the same song was still playing. the "smoke on the water" riff drives me nuts for some reason, no fault of deep purple's, but i'm not sure I can take 8 minutes of it.

Nothing special from all the other rock albums from the '70s.

The audio quality on this album is superb, and the band was trying to play the songs harder and perhaps more authentically in the live setting. All of it worked, but I still don't ever envision trafficking in the live performances over the produced record.

One for fans of guitar wankery. Imagine a lot of drugs were consumed at these gigs as people stoned out of their mind vibe to yet another seven minute wigout. Sounds pretty awesome to be fair. As a non stoner listening at home while working on a spreadsheet - didn’t quite hit the spot.

Some songs I recognise, but could never remember the name of. Overall quite good.

Other than Smoke on the Water, I've never heard anything from Deep Purple. So maybe a live album isn't the best starting point. Like most live albums, the music probably hits harder if you're there. I'll say I did enjoy most of this, even if some of the songs are way too long. Maybe I'll check out some studio albums if I think of it.

I don’t like live albums. They don’t capture what it’s like to be in the crowd and I don’t want to hear badly mixed versions of songs I can hear elsewhere. This has a lot of deviations from the originals, so could be seen as its own thing, but that’s also a downside. No one needs random noodling and drum solos.

Some cool shit in this one. Im probably not in it for the same reasons most people are but still i enjoyed it all the same. I like the first half. Which to be fair is pretty bog standard. No frills. Just the music. I didnt know I really knew any more songs than smoke on the water but I guess I do. Thats just the first song anyone learns on guitar and the song I bring up when im being annoying about zappa. Highway star is a sick song. Really like that one. But then in the later half i loose some interest just cause it get soo jammy. Like the part where tthe guitar and vocals are trying to write a little part of the solo is cool and all but it goes too far for me. Dragging out a song to twice the length is my cup of tea. Im not all in on 5 minute drum solos. Probably cool in person but im much less interested while just listening. But all in all its a cool live record. Some fun crowd stuff and lots of jams. If that sounds like your thing im sure you would enjoy that. Im less enthusiastic about it but i still liked it.

Decent for a live album

Too long

Too long but good tracks.

Brilliant live set, this record was my first exposure to Deep Purple. When I finally got around to buying Machine Head, I was blown away.

Pretty much the definition of a 3 in my book. But it's cool that they wrote the riff that every guitar player learns at their first lesson

This was a fun sound. It was a bit like the Doors but more raw. Lots of fun solos and riffs. I probably won't listen to this one much again because it's a bit too shreddy for my typical taste, but I did enjoy listening

The band sound incredible, really at the top of their game. Tight, energetic, and balanced. However... the interminable solos and noodling middle sections get boring very quickly. Cut out the fat guys!

I wanted to give this a 4 but some of the extended solos just don't keep my attention and get in the way of the actual songs.

Good instrumentation and monster truck rock. Same hits as before which feels like cheating. I could see this being a popular record to own at a time where length gave you more rock for your money.

For a live album this is actually pretty decent, especially all the stuff that isn't just their songs being played live. There are a ton of solos and you can hear the band just having fun up there. The crowd not being mega loud helps as well. On that level I enjoyed it and I bet listening to this on a nice sounds system would be cool. It is two fucking hours of jams though, and that's a bit much. While they are all great instrumentalists (especially the drummer) there's only so much classic rock solos can do to improve fundamentally boring songwriting. Smoke On The Water and maybe Space Truckin notwithstanding, the songs just aren't that engaging. If this album was half the length I'd give it a 4 I think, but it isn't!

Peecansabrosin dissin these hot tracks from Dazed & Confused!

Not really sure why this one is on here in addition to Machine Head, which I had to give a listen over early to make sure I wasn't missing something. The sound is great, but it is on Machine Head. Smoke on the Water is my favourite track on here, as it will be on Machine Head.

Got this one on vinyl from a sale on someones collection and I got it because it: 1. Had smoke on the water. 2. Wanted to hear more of the smoke on the water band. 3. Japan. Certainly not bad reasons as this should be a textbook example of a good live record of a hard rock band from the early 70s (I believe they're most popular around that time). I've only spun once so I got nothing more.

Not my vibe for some reason. The guitar solos and the vocalists voice were amazing tho

Excellent live album. Pure hard rock. Also, a very respectfully audience. A 3,5

Muutama poikkeus toki on

eh. machine head was better.

2026.04.21.

Did it have to be a live album? Vocals and music are phenomenal, but the tracks are just too long. Couple tracks, the vocals were overwhelmingly loud to my ears. Would like to have a non-live version of couple tracks. 3/5

The best music on here happens when the guitar shuts the fuck up.

Pretty wild album. I was lowkey lost in a lot of the album, but still very solid. Space Truckin' and Strange Kind Of Woman were my overall favorites, and Lazy and The Mule had some cool moments. 6.1/10. Very good but kinda long and repetitive to me.

Alright, but I’ve never been much of a Deep Purple fan.

Honestly not a big deep purple fan but I can see the appeal

Very good, but if I ever went to a show and they played this few songs for this long of a time I’d be pissed.

Not a fan of live albums, but would have absolutely loved to have been at this gig.

Too long, too many boring grandstanding solos, to much grating noise rock thrown in. This could've been great if it didn't waste so much of my time. In my opinion live performances pretty much always sound worse than studio recordings. I don't need to hear crowd clapping and cheering almost as much as I didn't need to hear the tons of dad rock jam band junk between the actual songs. The makings of excellence are here, they're just wrapped in garbage.

Nothing toooo special about this

La flemme d’écouter un live de 2h On a déjà écouté certaines tracks

Day812 - from what i’ve read this is a seminal live album but i prefer the studio versions of highway star and smoke on the water.

5/10 I like guitar, but this is not my thing. Too long a song, drum solos - all a bit messy

Better than I expected!

Aside from the opening track making you feel like you're listening to Spinal Tap having their triumphant return in Japan, I have no idea why this album made it into this collection. It's basically a greatest hits album (itself a no-no with this project) by a band that, it turns out, doesn't really have all that many great hits, despite the insanely long runtime for just seven songs. But it's always nice to hear "Smoke on the water", and their live version of "Space truckin'" is pretty entertaining in a Grateful-Dead-style of infinite noodling; it's hard, though, listening to Ian Paice's extended drum solo in "The mule" and not think of how much better Neil Peart's solos were on Rush's live albums from the same era. And while it turns out I'm not a big Deep Purple fan, I would agree with all the accolades that this is a surprisingly good live recording (especially so with no overdubs), and it's fun to hear how much the Japanese audience were clearly *really* into the set.

Now this is one for the ages. Great performance, the vibe sweats through the speakers.

I hate live albums but this is Good??? I don't even mind the screaming. It's moody and proggy and I'm digging it. Okay but this drum solo is too long.

I think I would have enjoyed the studio album version more than the live version. There is no denying Deep Purple played a large role in the creation of heavy metal.

A jamming session, where the semblance of songs can just about be deciphered

This would score higher without the individual instrument solos that all go on a bit too long. There are some fantastic songs here but they get swamped by the solo indulgences. This is more bearable than most live albums in that the sound quality is really clean. I could have done with more songs, less solo.

I don’t feel like live albums belong on this list. Whilst it may have been life changing to see these acts at the height of their power, I just don’t feel like this is the same as a classic album. Having said that, this was pretty good.

Much energy. 3.1 stars.

Cheat they send in a live album. Love deep purple, but please give an actual album

Anyone doing this 1001 albums thing probably understands that any claim that music was "better" during one era or another is pretty dumb. Every decade delivers innovation and artistry that stands the test of time. Live albums might be a different story. If you argued that those peaked in the 70s, at least in rock music, I’d listen. There was clearly a goldilocks effect where improved technology intersected perfectly with the necessity of great performances. You just had to be tighter then; the studio sound quality wasn't quite as unattainable. Deep Purple don't set themselves apart for me. But they clearly knew how to play their instruments, and if that's your jam, there's a whole lotta that here.

Love the band but not that live. It sounded like they were in a rush. I do not think that playing child in time or highway star that fast makes those songs better. Quite the contrary.

‘s alright. I can definitely hear the influence on metal.

Doesn’t do it for me. There’s a section in Strange Kind of Woman where the singer parrots the guitar solo like in the outro to You Shook Me by Led Zeppelin, except instead of being one minute long and pretty cool, it’s like 5 minutes long and extremely annoying.

Some live albums are essential to understanding a band’s essence, and some are just “ya had to be there”. This is the latter.

Impressive live performance ✨

Live albums are cheating. But thought I’d despise this, actually fairly enjoyable

Such a mad live album, 3.5

I also thought I'd hate this but it surprised me. 3 arms out of 5

I'm not against live albums being on the list, but this is an odd choice of a live album. Most of the songs are on other albums already on the list and there isn't anything particularly special with the live performance that makes this remarkable.

Highway Star 4/5 Child in Time 4/5 Smoke on the Water 5/5 The Mule 3/5 Strange Kind of Woman 4/5 Lazy 2/5 Space Truckin' 3/5 Black Night 3/5 Speed King 3/5 Lucille 3/5 Overall Rating 3.4

good performance, very track was so long though lmao, good music though

A little long, not a fan of drum solos, but solid rock

Better than I though, but live albums are tricky

Franchement très sympa ça passe tout seul, après est ce que la version live apporte quelque chose d'autres que mettre des sons d'autres albums pour faire une compilation je sais pas trop

70s rock. Live album. Quite masterful and theatrical. Impressive instrumentation. Loads of jamming. Quite indulgent.

I liked this album lot. Impressed with the playing and singing. But I dont give more than 3 stars to live albums. Especially when its not recorded all in the same night

Classic early 70s rock sound of my youth. Not exactly my style, but close.

Deep Purple are always interesting music wise, but I can't get over how dumb some of the lyrics are. They excel live, and this is a good testament to their virtuosity.

It feels strange to rate a live album as I would never purposely listen to a live version of a song over a studio version. I was already familiar with Deep Purple but I was impressed with their musicianship, although as ever I could have done without the drum solo. I also enjoyed the typically British introductions to the songs.

Decent but too long and a bit samey

It was a live album, decent but I'd have been vex if they did all that in one go

I think I've said this for every live album on this list so far, but why is this on here and not Stop Making Sense!!!!!!! This album is fine, they are good musicians, but this album gets incredibly monotonous as it goes on. Mid 3.

7.1/10 As far as live albums go, I really don’t get why this one was added-not to say it was bad, but in my opinion for a live album to be included on a list like this, they should be absolutely iconic and/or include live versions that are superior to the studio versions, and I’m just not getting that here for the most part with the exception of “child in time”. Favorite song: Child in time Least favorite: The mule

Listened to this while playing Leviathan Wilds with this partner. This album was so long, we lost the first game but won the second. My dogs were not fans of this album. It made them aggressive. I could appreciate the musicianship...but it just wasn't my jam.

Literally just a live version of a compilation of their songs so idk if i can count this…

Didn't listen to the last two songs. This double album was a lot to get through. All the beginner band classes still appreciate how easy it is to learn Smoke on the Water, my kids included.

A little repetitive, I like Deep Purple, not a big fan of live recordings though. It would be fun to be there, but hard to listen to attentively for 10 minutes of the same riff building

I like Deep Purple. This has some great music. It is one of the best live album recordings I have heard. That being said it is way too long and self indulgent. Entirely too many ridiculously long solos. 3/5

Much better live than on record, even if the keyboard is still too much for me.

I like this but its way too long 3/5

Opera dal sound un po' dismesso, rappresenta comunque un perfetto esercizio di auto compiacimento brioso e divertente, attuato da un gruppo di talentuosi strumentisti. Decisamente un grande show.

A classic hard rock performance from the 1970s.

Not even 50 albums in and I have already gotten both live albums recorded in Japan on this list (the other one being Cheap Trick’s At Budokan). Out of those two albums, I prefer this one because it is more technically impressive and exciting, although some of the songs outstay their welcome (which is kind of expected, because this is a 77 minute album with a mere seven tracks).

It’s ok

On it's own, I dig this album. In the context of the full 1,001 list, it feels a little redundant alongside the two other Deep Purple albums. Sure, the live versions have more to them, but I'd argue the studio albums are more "essential" listening. Still a fun listen.

Yeah it rocks but I didn't know Deep Purple were the types to do 19-minute versions of their songs live. Cool soloing and drumming. I'll revisit and possibly re-adjust the score in the future.

Another band I've not listened to much of. I really enjoyed listening through this live album as it's felt like seeing a classic rock show. I'd love to hear more of their studio stuff.

It's ok. I'd rather listen to a Thin Lizzy live album though. 6/10

Not bad.

Enjoyed it, think Metallica covered one of these

Good BUT the songs are way too long.

I’m not a fan of live albums because the point is to actually be there enjoying the atmosphere. I guess this one is pretty decent as live albums go, however does anyone actually enjoy extended solos other than the artist? At best tedious, at worst unlistenable. No need. 2.5

Deep Purple rocks, but there’s not all that much crossover between bands that rock, and bands that I want to hear do extended live noodling. The album sounds cool, nice live recording, but almost every song goes into something that is A Bit Much.

cool but i dont care

Don't love live albums

90 minute double album of 10 songs. Space Truckin' is less than 5 minutes on the album. Here it is extended to nearly 20 minutes. Several other songs are extended versions including a lengthy drum solo on The Mule. I probably would have a better appreciation of this live album if it was 1972.... and I was more familiar with the studio versions of these tracks and more in awe of the clear sound of the live album. Phish does this to their songs. A 4 minute song on an album will be 22 minutes in concert and after 18 minutes you don't remember what song they started with until they come back to it in the last minute. I like the 4 minute song... I don't need a 22 minute version. I will more than likely hear the Deep Purple studio albums eventually as they are probably part of this list... which with more familiarity I may gain appreciation for this live album.

The first thing that leaps out are the virtuosic performances of every member of the band. 'Highway Star' has some superbly frenetic organ playing from Lord, not too dissimilar from Keith Emerson. Blackmore is pretty faultless throughout the whole set; he's not one for blues licks, but his thing is speed and precision and he does it impressively well. Paice's drumming is superb. Like Jamie Oliver he can casually toss off an exquisite roll; as demonstrated on 'The Mule'. Finally, but not leastily, Gillan's vocal feels gruff in this at times, but then he accelerates at pace to those high notes effortlessly - surely a major influence on Axl Rose. Much like 'Machine Head' I find this an entertaining album with some superb moments, and a highly impressive live band. The performance is great of that there's no doubt. A lack of consistently excellent songs, and a propensity to venture into masturbatory marathons remains DP's problem.

I was fully prepared to dislike this as much as I did the Who live album previously. But, it was actually quite enjoyable. Absolutely over the top and self indulgent, and consequently way too long, but still a great-sounding recording of remarkable live band. The seventies stylings aren't really to my taste but I have to admire the skills.

Was looking forward to this one after Machine Head but a little self indulgent to be honest. Didn’t need quite so many solos and extended breaks

I like these songs, but I can't deal with bands extending their songs live to fit in long periods of wankery

I love deep purple but I don’t think live albums belong on this list. Space truckin went on way way too long. Being there I’m sure it was great but it doesn’t translate on record

This album has everything I dislike about live albums: excessive, self-indulgent, overly long solos and songs that go on forever...check, check, check and check. I do like Smoke on the Water though. It was a pep band staple for football and basketball games when I was in high school, and was a fun song to play.

70’s rock

Long classic rock guitar jam sess

If I’d have been 20 years older, then maybe, just maybe I’d have seen this lot live and bought the album as a memory. I do like an unnecessarily long live solo, with a bit of call and respond between the band, but it doesn’t have the magic if you’re not a fan of the band. A respectful and appreciative 3 for the musicianship, and for making their live performance a proper event, rather than just going through the motions.

Solid songs but for me personally not a big instrumental guy and they run the songs long with multiple instrumental interludes

Yeah it's good... but the songs are already good. There are better albums, heck, there's even better live albums. 3/5

Live albums are utterly subjective, some bands are better live and each song takes a new turn every performance, some are rigid and their live stuff sounds just like their studio versions.... Deep Purple sit somewhere in between where the songs sound studio quality, but are elongated to an extreme length. Besides we've heard all this stuff on their other two albums included in this list...

3.5 Better than I expected.

#738. Why is every single song so long? This might have been great for those people there, but I'm not there, so the dragging out of every song just gets quite tedious. 3/5: could've been better

Don't really think there is justification for this to be on the list. It's good, and I bet it would've been great being there at the time, but don't really think live albums should be here. Quite a few of these tracks were on machine head that we've already had on the list too. Just finished it.... Why do we need 3 live versions of the same track and 2 versions of another?? There is so much self indulgent jamming n all. 2 hours is too much of this. 2.5 but I'm going 3 as I do think they are decent, just don't need a live album

The songs and performances are good, but it's a live album. 3 stars.

Solidly good as far as live albums go. I've had three or four other live albums already, so I again will note that it feels like only getting half the experience. Even though the music was good here, I am left missing the visual aspect of the performance for the show. I'd already gotten Machine Head as a rec, so a lot of the songs here were familiar from that. I gotta say I prefer the album versions for a random listen. Not sure I'd really listen to them from this unless I wanted to hear the live album again. It seems more suited to someone who's a fan of the band rather than as a one-off listener. The performance was pretty good, I'll give it that. It had the old school heavy rock vibe, the super long solos, and even a vocal-instrument mimic sequence. If you want to listen to a 70s metal live album, you'd be hard pressed to find a better option. But I'm not sure that makes this album something I needed to hear before I die. Overall: 3/5

Okay but I prefer their studio albums

i recognize that this is good but boy did i not GAF

Great band, very good live but I'm not really into live albums Good tracks but 3 versions of Black night and 2 of speed king???

It’s wild reading about the legacy of this album, because my main question is: was it drugs that made people want these 10-minute songs with endless guitar and drum solos? I get the appeal of seeing it live - when you’re in the moment, the improvisation and sheer musicianship can be electrifying. But as a recorded album, it feels like a marathon. There’s no denying Deep Purple’s talent or their role in shaping hard rock and metal, but listening straight through, I found myself drained. The extended jams stretch beyond what I’d call engaging, and I kept checking how much time was left because I was ready for it to be over. I understand why it’s considered iconic. A snapshot of the raw power of 70s arena rock, where excess was part of the experience, but for me, it’s more of a historical artifact than an album I’d throw on for enjoyment.

A bit too long and jam bandy to give 4, but I do love the heavier versions of several of the songs. Highlights are Highway Star and Space Truckin' (before the huge jam parts.)

Я не понимаю концертные альбомы. И зачем их включать в этот список в таком количестве. Это было очень неплохо и интересно, но я с большим удовольствием послушал бы отдельно студийные альбомы с более хорошим качеством записи и без криков толпы

I'm 3 mins into the 2nd track and thinking this is solid. We'll see how I feel after the 76th minute when I firmly believe the sweet spot for an album is 40-50mins. Yep it's a solid live album. Don't see it being for everyone and wouldn't consider it mandatory listening. 3/5.

i think live albums should be banned from this list. nothing against the artists, but a lot of them are just the artist but live

I like Deep Purple, and I like these extended jammy versions of their songs that show off their guitar wankery. But 2 hours? Bit excessive. It has the same song on it three times, I mean, that's too much

Feels like the roots of heavy metal. Generally I'm enamored by rock of this era, especially when it has screamy lyrics. But Made in Japan has just enough instrumental creativity to nudge it up to three stars.

I listened to the original release (seven tracks) of this live album from 1971-72. Apparently Deep Purple was very popular in Japan, before the USA jumped aboard the Deep Purple popularity wagon. The album shows the band had a lot of energy and performed a food live show. It’s a good live album although not fabulous.

Not bad a little long winded for my tastes but enjoy it as background.

I liked it for the first three songs but it just lingered a bit too long, the drum solo on the mule never seemed to end. Great musicians and solid performance but I just didn’t like it as much as a deep purple super fan might have.

Did not like the other deep purple album I heard but this one was much better. The live aspect does the music a lot more justice

Maybe I would have enjoyed an actual album instead of a concert but it was okay.

I expect this to be divisive. Turns out I was naive to Deep Purple because this live album showed another, more psychedelic and prog side to them than I realised. Although the solos descend into the worst form of prog wankery (that call and response bit was awful) and I found some of their more well known tracks to be weaker than the rest, underneath it, found some decent musicianship there - the vocals in particular were surprising solid.

Classic rock sledgehammer. Very powerful.

If you like 20min long jam songs this is the album for you.

This album was pretty great but holy shit man. I just listened to Machine Head a few albums ago. This shit feels like cheating. Maybe these albums were part of the OG list but deadass why couldn't they just pick one or other. I can't in good conscience give this the same rating as Machine Head. All this being said though this album was still fire. 3.55/5

Some pretty good live rock

Musicianship on display is too high for me to disrespect by going lower than three, but this seems like a redundant entry. The best songs here were also on their studio album we already got.

This is a good live album, glad to have listened to it. I'm more likely to revisit Machine Head which I gave 5 stars.

Só não era preciso ter músicas de 10 minutos com Beats repetidos. Deep Purple é muito bom e toda a gente sabe disso!

Spotify thinks I love Deep Purple now (second album in less than a week 😂) Fun to listen to a live album. Still not my thing. 🤙🤙🤙

Look, I love Highway Star as much as anyone but this doesn’t need to be here at all.

This is a lot of fun but it's the same as Machine Head and i don't really get why a live album is on this list?

I detest the existence of this on here for sure. OVER HALF of these songs we hear in Machine Head alone, which is already on the list. It would also be awesome if one of the tracks wasn't 5+ minutes of drum lead-outs.

Un album live qui démontre la virtuosité de l’ensemble. Des éléments de métal me plaisent; je suis moins convaincue par les passages au clavier-orgue.

2.5 favs: - child in time - smoke on the water

This one suffers from my inability to listen to Deep Purple without being in the right mood ontop of it being 8 tracks and an hour long. But its not bad? If you're looking to get into Deep Purple id start somewhere else and come back to this as a fan, you'll enjoy it much much more that way!

the music was good but i think i just don't care for live albums... i'm sorry deep purple it's not you it's me

a lot better than expected but i don't understand why i should listen the live version

Pretty cool live album, guitar work was great

it was pretty cool but the country references are heavy and the songs aren’t melodic

It's hard to evaluate such a release 53 years later. In today's world where track length is rapidly shrinking to fit the TikTok format, listening to the twenty-minute version of "Space Truckin'" is quite an interesting challenge. But back then, I can only imagine what an impression this live release must have made. I still prefer the polished studio versions of good songs. (Except for "Smoke on the Water" – it's really hard to take that song seriously, you know.) 3/5

Has the big tunes on it. Fun enough but some of the songs are dragged out more than necessary.

Need to check out non-live versions of Black Night and The Mule So much damn noodling

> The Beatles

A classic. Although I am not a fan of including live albums in this collection. Fav: Space Truckin‘ (But only the first five minutes)

Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin', Child In Time Deep Purple feels like the Grateful Dead of Heavy Metal. Good crowd work, psychedelic rock vibes, on-point subject matter in the lyrics and song titles. And then all of the hallmarks of early Heavy Metal. Shouting and screaming, Heavy guitar riffs and shredding, heavy drums. I liked this, but I don't think I can rate it more than a 3. I am not wanting more after three, almost four full listens. There's a lot of screaming and howling, a lot of noise. It's not easy listening and it's not something you can throw on in the background while you're doing something else like working at your desk in an office. It requires dedication. Perhaps I feel this way because of how long the album is. I could much more easily tolerate a 30 or 45 minute album of this. Cut Space Truckin' into like... a third of the length. Trim some fat on Child In Time, etc. Save the jamming for actual jam bands. Maybe this is the case for their studio albums. Not sure.

Big in Japan had started to become a catch-on term for bands who were rather niche in their homeland but were revered Gods in the Far East. While Deep Purple were far from niche, their stage presence was more than enough to garner sway and Made in Japan was a prime example of this. While listening to it garners thoughts of whether or not it merits an essential certification, it does capture a band at the peak of its powers, which is of good value for any Deep Purple fan. Favorites: Highway Star, Child in Time, Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin'.

Cool. Extended rock jams. You have to be in the right mood I think. And again I would prefer to actually see it live than recorded. Funny how every kid learned the opening bit of Smoke on the Water on guitar in school music class. (3.5 stars)

Perfectly enjoyable, great musicianship, but please, please don’t sing along with guitar solos, no matter how good your voice is. Length of songs doesn’t bother me - I’m a DMB fan. 3.5 stars, but it won’t stay in my library, so rounded down to 3.

Made in Japan – Deep Purple (1972) | Hard Rock / Heavy Metal (Live Album) | Avg: 5.36 | Favorite Song: “Highway Star” Made in Japan is one of those live albums that showcases just how tight and technically gifted Deep Purple really was. The musicianship here is undeniable—every member of the band is locked in, and they extend these songs in ways that feel bold without being overindulgent. “Highway Star” in particular stands out as the best showcase; the energy is electric, the solos are razor-sharp, and it sets a high standard that the rest of the album never quite reaches again. That said, from a reviewer’s perspective, it’s hard not to feel a little underwhelmed by the repetition of previously released material on “Machine Head”. The performances are excellent, but the setlist doesn’t bring much new to the table beyond extended jams. It’s more of a technical display than a new artistic statement. I came away impressed by how well they played, but not necessarily moved by what they played. For fans of Deep Purple, it’s probably essential. For me, it lacked the depth or unpredictability to feel truly meaningful or stand out on this list. It should be sought out by those who truly enjoyed “Machine Head.”

I appreciate the songs that I recognize, but overall hard rock is a little too angsty

It was okay, not my favorite.

Deep Purple has some bangers but other stuff is just whatever honestly

it may be hypocritical of me to question why this album is so long when some of my favourites run past the 70 minute mark just like this, but... why is it so long?! it's really more for the jam band fans at this point; there isn't enough meat to justify this run time.

These endless noodling solos became unbearable to listen to at some point.

Sorry, but no one needs a 20 minute version of Space Truckin

Not bad for a live album. Considering the poor audio quality and lengthy solos it still had some good songs.

Overall: 5/10 So they sound amazing. I can't deny that. Sadly, I just don't want to listen to a live album that's half noodling around. Especially when almost every single song appears on other albums in this list. I just find that incredibly annoying. Fav Song: Highway Star Least Fav Song: The Mule

Jesus his caterwauling grates as you get older. Some great tracks done great but I could go the rest of my life without Smoke on the water.

Deep purple are so much easier to enjoy when you just accept that they are a bit silly. Another live album that I rather liked

the solos were pretty good but were waaaay to long, probably effect of it being live. otherwise alright

Legendary band. Very overindulgent hence the three but they have the right to get lost in noodling.

It’s so long, and really started to feel tedious. It’s not even the fun sort of live album where I can easily imagine myself being there - the recording’s too clean, perhaps, with not enough feedback from the audience. Maybe I’d be into it on another day, but today it felt like a bit of a chore.

Live record, some good songs but too many breakdowns/fills/jam sessions

not a huge fan of rock but the solos went so hard i cried

That is one long drum solo! May need to listen to other albums by Deep Purple.

Better than I expected for a live album.

I'm a big fan of live albums and this is no exception. Would've been quite the trip to see these boys live back in the day

Good live album, felt different from the recent album because the shredding and elongated songs. Not the best live album ever but enjoyable

Machine head but it’s liveeee

Pretty solid concert recording

Live albums are difficult to rate when going through an experience like this. Normally when you discover an artist, then you only listen to the live albums when you already love the albums before it. The familiarity with the music makes the live performance amazing as you can tell the quality of the musicianship more at times. However through this challenge a live album gets thrown at you without any context of the previous albums. Meaning that is you listened to and loved the previous deep purple albums, you'll love this. However if you didn't, you probably won't get what this is about For my experience it was mostly new music with some familiar tunes which were excellently performed. In general the album is very solid and the recording is quite decent for a live performance. If i was more familiar with the band's discography I would have probably loved this, but since I'm not it was mostly just good with some real lows (did we really need minutes of drum solo on the mule)

A bit long but good.

Good concert, fine rock band. Not an essential live album. They played some big riffs in Japan, that’s about all.

i was pondering on my review on this album until i heard smoke on the water live and was like "OMG MY DAD TAUGHT ME HOW TO PLAY THAT LIKE 10 YEARS AGO OMG THAT'S SO COOL" and yea that's very cool. also a teacher recced me this album and i finally can say i've heard it. nice rock .P

Honestly would be such a cool performance to see live, but man 2 hours of that was such a draggg. Black Night three times and Speed King two like are you kidding me. Like it would be amazing to hear them live and be like OMG THEIR HITS AGAIN AND AGAIN but not for that.

Impressive musicianship, no doubt; but it mostly feels like a document of an amazing concert rather than an essential listening experience. Great performances, but it doesn’t add much beyond the studio versions.

I liked it more than I thought I would but those long solos killed the vibe for me. Three stars.

Rock or fast paced live albums are a bit of a cheat code, they always come across well to me regardless of actual content

After shit-talking live albums literally 3 days ago… To be fair, not a bad live performance at all, I’m sure it would’ve been a blast to see these shows. Not to mention this was pretty much just about as heavy as it got for the time period, and you can hear the influence Richie Blackmore had on a lot of rock and metal guitarists for years to come with some pretty damn good shredding during this performance. I don’t see a point rating the songs individually, as being a live album, it’s essentially just a compilation. So I’ll just give the whole thing a 7/10.

Not as a deep as I remembered it to be. But definitely purple as advertised. As a live album, this does an excellent job of capturing the sound and overall performance.

They sound great, and I bet it would have been be an amazing experience to have seen this live, but for an album a lot of these tracks go on for too long.

This is generally the type of music I like, but I’ve never really been a big fan of Deep Purple. However, this is a pretty cool live best of album.

why do we make live albums? of course i have the ability to be an annoying prick and say that i don't like hearing music live, but that's a total lie. i love going to concerts, i love watching people play songs i love, and i love the chance to feel like i'm a part of musical history, a little piece of memory to prove to yourself "i was there". live performance offers lots of things to people that the record itself cannot. however, from my perspective, live albums offer neither the polish or production of a studio engineer nor the feeling that i'm actually there. so, i've tried to narrow down all the reasons as to why someone would purchase a live album over a studio album. 1. it captures one particularly great show, such as 98.12.28 男達の別れ [98.12.28 Otokotachi no wakare], The Köln Concert, or At Folsom Prison. this is what makes the most sense to me -- if a performance was legendary, of course you'd wanna hear it. of course, sometimes this can go too far; if anyone who isn't wholly suckered into the cult of the Deadhead can tell me what makes Here Comes Sunshine better on Dick's Picks Volume One: Tampa, Florida, 12/19/73 than on Dick's Picks Volume Fourteen: Boston Music Hall, 11/30/73 & 12/2/73 or vice versa, i'd really like to know. there's got to be at least some reason as to why you'd want to archive one performance over another, otherwise it just feels like manufacturing false importance. 2. it's a bunch of recordings from a single tour meant to be representative of a really good TOUR instead of a really good concert. it's a snapshot of the band at the time. this album is an example of such a thing, as is 'Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!': The Rolling Stones in Concert. i'm a little less compelled by this reason, because at that point, it's more of a compilation of really good moments of the band and thus is more susceptible to cherry picking. a mediocre live act could delude an audience into paying money for a concert because their compilation album made them come off as real rooftearin' sonsabitches over the course of a month. thankfully, from what i've heard, Deep Purple are a great live act, and you can hear it on the record during some of the jammier sections. 3. this is the only record we have of the band existing. you've got '77 Live, or Nervous Conditions, or 801 Live. at this point, you are listening to a sanctioned demo. this is the equivalent of getting a really tasty sample at the grocery store and looking in vain only to find that it was discontinued, so you're stuck licking the little paper cup it came in. 4. for some ungodly reason, you are basically listening to a fake live album. this includes Alive! and Alive II, Beach Boys' Party!, or Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles! Live!. you weren't there. nobody was there. in fact, there's a good chance they weren't there. other live albums with extensive overdubs such as The Song Remains the Same also get filed under this category for all the overdubs. this is the pinnacle of parasociality, and i find it kind of sad. maybe they're good performances, but at that point, you should just buy the album with these songs on them. if you want the "LIVE!" experience, just find some damn stock audience sounds and crossfade them between songs. anyway, this album is fine. sometimes it's a tad too jammy for my tastes, but it's still fun. i just wish i was there, so i could have as much fun as the people here were having. that's probably the biggest reason why i'm not a live albums guy -- how dare you have fun in the past without me?

The music is pretty good, for the most part. The solos give me juuuuust enough to outweigh the crowd noise and shoddy mix, because, as a rule, I hate live records. So it balances out to a poorly structured compilation album. I'll probably think this was too generous when I look back on these reviews.

It's good but wouldn't go back to it much even though I like Deep Purple mainly because I'm not a big fan of live recordings and would rather listen to studio versions in most cases. This also applies here; the performance is very good but everything is so drawn out and I don't like it enough to warrant placing it over the studio version, especially since the production on the studio recordings is much better

They are really good at guitar and I bet it was better live

Listened on 5/13/25 3/5 Favorite songs: smoke on the water I’m not the biggest fan of live albums and this one was unnecessarily long. They are crazy talented though - very classic 70s rock

Impressive live performances but 2 hours is just too long (makes sense since it was an actual show). Favorite is highway star. 3.5.

Redefining the concept of meh.

Would be a good concert to be at, but does not work that well as an album for me. 3 stars or C-.

Hey ! at last classic rock. I love Deep Purple and while not a big fan of live albums (taking of one star for the pleasure?!) this was greeeaat:)

This list has been a proper intro to Deep Purple for me, and some of these tracks I really dig... but I can do without the 20 minute jams.

It's a good album as far as live albums go. I will say, however, that drum solos really don't belong on live albums as they don't translate in the same way as they do when you go to a live concert. Having said that, if you aren't into drum solos they are always a good opportunity to go to the concession stand (or the kitchen) for refreshments.

As others mentioned, this is redundant due to "Machine Head" and "In Rock" being also on this list, and many many other artists not even present once ;/ The songs here are live versions of songs present on those records, and I understand Deep Purple released it due to the demand of live performance records by their fans back in the 70's, Is true that the versions here can at some point be even better than those on estudio (or viceversa). In any case, either one or the other, could have been left out and the list, would be more diverse.

Litt gøy, litt slitsomt

Schreeuwerig en pingel-pongel-gitaartje. Nee, het is niet mijn ding. Muzikaal zit het wel goed in elkaar.

Good music but kind of a long album.

Nice, but too long sometimes. I guess that’s the point of a live album, but it’s just not for me

Better than the previous Deep Purple album, but not sure why this particular live performance warranted a spot on this list.

3 out of 5. This would have been much better to see live.

Great live album. Have to say the “drum solo” sounds more like he’s warming up and tuning the drums than performing. Just had to put that out there as a listening note

not bad, very impressed that this was live, sounded true to the og recordings

I wondered when I would get a Deep Purple album, but I hoped it wouldn’t be a live album. Sadly it is. To be fair, the quality of the recording isn’t half bad, but it’s still live and isn’t as good as a studio album. It’s from their 1972 Japan tour, which is therefore Gillan not Coverdale. I don’t dislike Gillan, I just prefer Coverdale. I hate to give Deep Purple anything less than a 4, but it’s a live album that includes way too much noodling and unnecessary noise, and that grates me. As I’ve said many times in my reviews of other lives albums, I’d rather a compilation of studio recordings than a live. I don’t think live albums should be in this list.

I really like Deep Purple and they sound awesome live. This album would have got a 4 if it hadn't had such long, extended jam sessions throughout which unfortunately were a bit much for me.

Not available 😞

Not bad. Not my cup of tea.

Very long album. The songs were good until they just went on noodling about for minutes longer than necessary. I get it was a live album, but it could've been 30 minutes shorter or swapped out some noodling for more songs. 3/5

1. Lazy 2. Highway star 3. Strange kind of woman

Another live album. Too many of them. I like Deep Purple but this would be better if I was at the actual concert. Space Truckin' goes on way too long. They can play and the songs are good. I just prefer the studio versions.

A true classic. More rock/chaotic than I typically like, but some real nostalgic ones in here

Enjoyed the keys on this. Songs were mostly fine, but were lacking at times. 3/5 Might listen again

I’ve never cared for live albums but this is pretty good.

A classic. Not something I listen to a lot as it's all overplayed now but that's not their fault

Good introduction to Deep Purple. Overstayed its welcome, but I had fun with it. Look forward to hearing more from them.

So I was expecting Prog Rock, which I tend to mightily dislike. Instead this was some straight forward rock, and some moments of bluesy rock that I really enjoyed. Towards the end (of disk one on Spotify, which is the original album. I don’t feel the need to rate the add-ons) it got into some more dragged out solos/proggy stuff. That brings the star count down. But I was surprised to like a bunch of this! I’d probably rate it a 3.5. Not sure which way I will round, will decide after my second listen.

Live albums are a hit or miss for me - this was somewhat enjoyable but still a miss.

Live albums don't belong on this list but at least on this one they significantly changed or extended the songs compared to their studio versions. Some of the songs they actually extended too much for my taste. Favorites: Highway Star, Child in Time, Smoke on the Water Least Favorites: The Mule, Strange Kind of Woman

Good energy throughout. A lot of great riffs. I don't agree with it being in the list cause it's a live album. It's far too long also - over 2 hours. Stand out song - Space truckin

I enjoyed it. Nostalgic and rockin’ music.

Pretty awesome but has a lot of downtime

Good, but probably the lower tier of the unholy trinity.

Pretty alright. Not the best way to spend an hour. 3 stars

Not a huge live music fan but quite enjoyed this

I do love Highway Star, Smoke on the Water is fun, but most of the other songs are not that memorable. Many fun parts like the call and response guitar and vocalist, or the endless drum solo, but much of the album blends into a nice sounding background.

Excellent Live album. Would be great without the lengthy solo parts.

Proggy, hard rock wizards take over Japan and wail in the faces of a well behaved Japanese crowd. It's completely over the top - face melting guitar solos, far too long drum solos, high pitched warbling vocals and time changes aplenty. Best Tracks: Highway Star; Smoke on Water; Strange Kind of Woman

First 3 tracks are like 3 of the strongest deep purple songs! Then the mule isn’t for me, the other one was okay and lazy was never one of my favourites 3/5

5.5/10

I think I used to like this a lot more.

Nice music and riffs, great drummer. Smoke on the water isn’t just a riff???

Is it too long? Yep. But, I enjoyed parts of it. 3.

I'm listening to these albums via youtube, I'm anti-subscription (showing my age)! Occasionally youtube, for whatever reason, decides that I can't listen to certain tracks of an album - and for this album there were 3 'unavailable' tracks. The album only had 7 tracks in total, so I missed out on ~40% of the album. The bits that youtube permitted me to hear were very good though, particularly 'Smoke On The Water'. In summary, good album, but youtube is a fascist, controlling, soul-less entity run by cunts ... you're welcome.

the guitar is impressive but eventually starts to feel gratuitous. edit! I will say for a live album the production is REALLY good.

Some songs are Great

Deep Purple jamming

Most of these songs were heard in the other DP albums on this list. Hey it's a good live album, but hearing them jam their songs doesn't make it an essential.

Deep Purple playing their worst (s)hits with fun, energy and feeling.

Lotta noodles, not enough sauce

+ Good music. - Live album.

Este rock con solos de 5 minutos me parece lo peor de la tierra. De todas formas no es todo malo, veo que esta banda seguro influyó a muchísimos artistas que vinieron después. Un 2.7 y pongo 3.

Great opening three songs. Drum solo opening of the mule is way too long and excessive. The back and forth Ian/Ritchie is a bit much too. When they are all jamming through songs it’s what live music is all about. When they start meandering and rambling it’s too unfocused for me.

All the best Deep purple song with some wicked solos. Kat did not approve

Oh dear God, another live double album. I like Deep Purple. They're fun, they play well. They're kind of ridiculous in a great way, as evidenced by the song "Space Truckin'". But we already got two very similar albums from them, which cover five out of the seven of the songs on this live release so it really screams "filler" for this list. But ok, let's dive in. Ok, the band can obviously play a great show. The long interpretations of the songs sound like they would have been great to see live. For all of the emphasis on audio quality though, it's surprising how many mistakes are present, but maybe the quality overall was impressive for the time it was made. It's great for what it is, but as I often find with live albums, I just feel like I'm listening to other people have fun. I'll stick with the studio versions myself.

This is cool in places, but possibly the most self-indulgent album we've had in terms of long instrumental solos and general noodling. The first three tracks are the most memorable, and that's a great first 27(!) minutes, with probably about the right level of noodling I think to keep it interesting. Then you get the Mule, which is 2/3 drum solo (and not that interesting a drum solo to be quite honest), Strange Kind Of Woman, which is good again, and Lazy / Space Trucking, which are 30 minutes where probably 75% of it is self-indulgence? 3/5, a tighter set would be a comfortable 4.

I've got no objections to live albums being on this list, but this is the 2nd one in a row, and there's nothing special about it unless you're a huge Deep Purple fan. Which I'm not.

It’s a good live album, but it’s also just a live album of songs already on this list.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. It’s overlong and indulgent, but it comes back around to being entertaining and fun. Like, yeah, there’s an eight minute DRUM SOLO on this album. It’s just absurd, and you kinda have to give it to them. They’re great on their instruments. And the lead singer has a fantastic heavy metal screech. Dumb fun.

Listened to the 2014 remaster, pretty decent

Entirely too long. This is absolutely an album for DP fans. There are good moments, but far too many “Why is this song still going?” moments. 3 stars.

For the most part, I enjoyed this. There were places where there was a little too much noodling and cheesy improv from the band, and some of the drum solos stretched my patience a little, but on the whole a fun listen.

Starts off with a banger, Highway Star. Smoke on the Water is also a blast, with that iconic guitar riff. The rest of the album, the songs are solid. There's only one issue. I love live music, and obviously I love recorded music. But I've never been a fan of recordings of live music. Just these songs on an album would have been a 4, but I'm going to have to drop it to a 3, there are parts where the songs drag on. These parts would be great to see live, but they just don't work for me as a recording. Best song: Smoke on the Water

it’s a good live album, just a bit long winded at times

Meh Rating: 2.8

People on this site often complain about live albums being on this list, but this was not bad. Its recorded well, and the performances are generally strong. On the flip side I don’t know if we needed a 20-minute version of ‘Space Truckin’, and lead singer Ian Gillans constant yelping on many of the songs gets annoying, but by and large, this was well worth a listen or two.

Good, lots of long songs.

Generally don't like live albums, but I really like Deep Purple. I don't need to hear the applause.

Hmm...it's heavy man, but not for me.

Nasal. Screechy. Rhythmic and rocking, though. Wah Wah Wah WawawaWAAAAH I remember my brother learning to play guitar with that Smoke on the Water riff on repeat until my mother screamed at him to learn another song because she couldn't take it drilling through her cranium another minute. I can't love this but honestly can't hate it either.

The hype of the crowd got me hyped and I actually kinda liked a lot of the stuff but then they started doing too much and it started giving me a headache.

Very intricate drumming
