Reviews (page 3 of 9)
Is it strange that most of these songs are on Machine Head? Is that a normal thing?
like I get it, you guys are insanely talented and wanted to show off for 2 hours!!!!
That was great
Kovaa ajoa.
I like Deep Purple a lot and I think it's funny that their most famous song is the song I think is the most boring compared to everything else they've done. Overall, this is a pretty good live album, though I'm not sure Space Truckin' needed to be nearly 20 minutes. But that might have been better as a part of the live experience? Pretty fun that the 2nd disc is nothing but encores (in this release anyway).
Enjoyable album. Always nice to hear the long version of songs.
Live album can be hit or miss. This is a hit. Even though I wasn't alive for it, I can feel the energy. The mixing, which is always hard live, really captures the sound of the band cleanly. I felt the opening riff to Smoke On the Water through my headphones.
Solid rokk og ról
Þetta fannst mér bara hin skemmtilegasta live plata
A strong collection of Deep Purple hits, featuring the energy of the crowd and the improvisational creative talent of one of the best bands of the time. As a fan Deep Purple, I appreciated the opportunity to hear the band jamming and expanding songs in their catalogue, but I feel that this album is likely too deep a dive into the mechanics of Deep Purple when any of their more famous studio albums would have better represented the band's music and why it should be heard.
I generally don’t like live albums, but this one was pretty good. Quality was good with little deviations from the music. Half hits and half jams, but solid all the way through.
Smoke on the water et Child in time, culte
No. 150 Really long tracks but an amazing live album. Shredding guitar solos + great drums make me wish I was there.
I mean. It's deep purple in 1972. What more to say?
A very good live album that shows how innovative and tight Deep Purple were as a band. 4/5
This is just a phenomenal live album. I don’t usually like live albums but this one is exceptional. I didn’t realize deep purple was a jam band.
epic
At first, I was thinking this was going to be an easy 5/5 - a couple of classics to get us going. Then the drum solos and guitar solos kicked in. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed listening to this album but I'll happily not listen to it all the way through again. In my opinion, Hawkwind do/did a better job at dragging out songs. It does seem that Deep Purple were having a lot of fun during the performances and I'm certain that there were a couple of moments which inspired Spinal Tap. A great listen not to be repeated.
this was a JAMMER I did not expect to like it as much when I saw the length of it, but it was great to just zone out and groove to. It was however... very long.
4/5 I was expecting this album to feel much longer, but honestly? Banger after banger. No song felt the same, the band was so playful that it made this album super fun. I loved it.
live album: good. deep purple: questionable (apart from smoke on the water and/or highway star). anyway i understand that this is not that a deserving album but like i need to say something else: what the fuck is your grudge towards live albums. also i just forced myself to listen to the whole thing, with my desire of giving up achieving its peak twice: during the drum solo of the mule and halfway during space trucking. i know extanded solos are not your thing but holy shit this is so sick. because of my desire to give up halfway this is a 4/5.
4 - I’m just now noticing that this list has a lot of live albums on it. That seems wrong for a list like this. Would greatest hits count? Some live albums are so special that I think it makes sense to include them, but maybe not this many. Anyway, this one is very good. The may jam just a bit too much though.
This is a loud record. You can hear the sheer volume of this show, as if you were there standing in front of the band getting your hair flattened by the sound. The extended jams are super adventurous and wild, always leaving you at the edge of your seat. The guitar and organ work is simply phenomenal, and the vocals rip hard. I might like this better than any of their studio albums that I’ve heard.
class

Awesome
The best live albums and best concerts aren't note for note recreations of an artist's catalog. They reimagine the songs and explore the possibilities of the music. Sometimes that disappoints fans who go to the concert expecting the hits, or people who like "songs" but don't really care about "music." Made in Japan is an epic exploration of music that transcends the actual "songs" in Deep Purple's catalog.
While not perfect, it's a damn good live album. Absolute masterclass in terms of rock n' roll musicianship -- the band is firing on all cylinders here, and the solos are a treat to listen to (arguably better than the original versions).
At this point, I feel like I’ve listened to enough live albums from the vinyl era where I can distill down my thoughts to, “It was a fun listen, but editing and rearranging the track list hamper my immersion into the performance.” I’m looking at the set lists from Deep Purple’s Japan 1972 shows, and it makes sense to have “Smoke on the Water” follow “Highway Star”, and close out the set with “Black Night” and “Speed King”, given the hits that the band had at the time and how they would want to present them. I can only surmise that these changes to the track order were due to the limitations of vinyl records at the time. It probably would have been difficult to press more than 21 minutes of recorded audio onto one side, which would have been the case to have say “Child in Time" and "The Mule" together in order. Hell, even later reissues struggle to hold an entire set onto a single disc. It really is a testament to how much improvisation the band employed during their live shows while maintaining a quality as close to the studio recordings as possible, right down to Ian Gillian’s soaring vocals on “Child in Time” and Jon Lord’s overdriven Hammond organ playing to open “Lazy”. Even a track like “Space Truckin’” can be stretched out to 19 minutes and maintain a kinetic energy in the band’s performance. It’s equally as impressive that no overdubs were needed for this album, a rarity for the time in which it was released. I will say that despite the technical limitations of its release, Made in Japan was a fun live compilation that showcased the pinnacle of Deep Purple’s musical talents.
# Album Name: Made in Japan # Artist: Deep Purple # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Im not that much of a one for live albums. But this is an Amazing live album. As its a live album, it doesnt hit a 5 for me. # Top Tunes: Great album # Would I listen to it again? Yes
Deep Purple is perfectly fine Hard Rock and this live album is a very good one!
Loved the live album! It was so real, such an epic album that took you back to the origination of heavy metal. Love the sound and flow with inclusion of jazz sounds towards mid end of Disc 1. Great album!
Great live album
I'd only ever heard Smoke on the Water, and was largely unimpressed. This album blew me away though. It was fun and catchy and fun again. Really enjoyed this.
7/10 18.02.2026
Pretty solid as live albums go.
Good! ★★★★
I remembered where smoke on the water is from today, great album for a lazy Saturday morning to get the kids to move
Nintendo.
Deep Purple. It has been a hot while since I got an album from these guys. It's been like 2 years! Honestly, I haven't thought about them a ton since then, but on the occasion that I have thought about them, those thoughts have been pretty positive. Now, I get to hear what they were like live with their 1972 live album Made in Japan. Honestly, it's pretty cool! I will say that there is an argument to be made that this album's inclusion is incredibly redundant seeing as 5 of the 7 songs here were on either Deep Purple in Rock or Machine Head, but the live versions are different enough for me to feel like this experience was different enough to not feel pointless. Speaking of which, you might be curious as to why a live album only contains 7 songs. Well, it's because there's a lot of improvisational solos here, which is not everyone's thing, but I think it's pretty neat in moderation. Admittedly, I think there could be a bit more of said moderation on this album here, but it's not terrible in that regard. I think there's a little too much noodling on the keyboards and drums, but there's at least talent on display so I can respect the hell out of it. Of course, the base songs themselves are all great, with this performance having some of Deep Purple's all-time greatest hits like "Smoke on the Water," "Highway Star," and "Child in Time." I must say that the album sounds amazing for a live album. The recording quality on streaming is impeccable, and I think that's really cool. The band's talent is at its absolute peak at this point in time. This is a cool live album, okay? Not the best of all time, but there's a ton to appreciate here. It's neat. Light 4/5.
A great live rock album. Some classics in here. Definitely hard rock.
This is just pure unadulterated excellent ROCK.
Some great playing on here, if a little self indulgent. But hey, it was the 70's, baby!
i love wanky guitar solos. i’m a simple girl
Ok, so this has its moments of cringe; some vocals on Child In Time, and the vocal/guitar call and response on Strange Kind of Woman admitted as evidence, but it closes with a 20 minute version of Space Truckin’. I don’t know how much more I could possibly ask for.
crazy that they’re known for the worst song on the album
This album rocks. It does a great job of capturing the energy of a live performance, and it also shows how great of a live band Deep Purple must have been. I don't know if I love any of the songs, but the sheer energy makes them all exhilarating.
I cut my teeth on classic rock when I was in high school in the late 80s, so I was familiar with Smoke on the Water and its iconic opening guitar riff. What I loved about this album is that you can feel the energy and truly appreciate the talent of each musician through the extended solos.
An incredible live record - but - with most of its tracks covered between Machine Head and In Rock - it begs the question, if you had to include a third Deep Purple album - why not Fireball? And if you've got the best songs here from those two records - why include the studio albums at all?
I enjoy Deep Purple in general, the hits on this album are excellent. It seems like it would have been an incredible show to see live, but something about a 12 minute long jam session doesn't hit me the same way on a recording. I think I'd rather listen to the studio recordings of these more often than I'd spend 2 hours on this.
Great example of a live album. The drum solo on The Mule is next level. They barely make a sound the whole time then explode at the end. Such a cool song and album, as a whole.
A punch in the face to listen to, in the best way.
Some raw rock power on here.
Favorite track(s): Highway Star, Child in Time, Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin'
idk what yall are talking about this being too long... give me more, that drum solo is killer
I really loved all of the long improvisations, and hearing how the members of the band interact with each other on the jams. In fact, this album sounded best when they were trying to sound different from the studio versions. The vocals felt a little weak compared to the monstrous guitar and organ parts. Standout Tracks: The Mule, Space Truckin.
Strong. Likeable OG heavy metal
8 / 10
It can only be said in the form of a cliche: this rocks. A showcase of why hard rock was huge in the early seventies. A testament to the power of the genre which DP studio albums can’t really live up to.
Didn‘t think a 50 year old live album could sound that powerful. Extra star for mentioning Switzerland and recording the album on a Japan tour - in cities that I now know😁
Overall cool. I feel this would be way better in video format.
A long, awesome rock sesh for a quiet Saturday morning at home. Only 7 tracks! I'm usually skeptical of double albums, and 20 minute album closers, but the live element makes this great the way it is.
8/10
Thought it was just gonna be one of those live albums where the songs are really long for no good reason and some of it was unnecessary but it was good overall
Easily one of the better live albums I’ve ever heard- they sounded great here and the entire recording had excellent energy.
Classic Rock in classic style.
Ok gets a bit repetitive tho
Really enjoyed this , hard rock continues to grow as one of my favs
Fantastic example of what a live album should be.
Awesome live album Standout songs: The Mule Lazy
good but long
solid album. what i really like about this one, as opposed to other entries from deep purple, is you get some nice added live energy to the songs that you normally don't really get from their studio recordings. they're not my favorite band in the world, but the live recording made it super fun to listen to.
4/5
that was fun
Ritchie Blackmore at his best
Man I love deep purple. Best line up
Really good but it takes way too many detours into instrumental self-indulgence. And these instrumental breaks are often far too long. All are executed really well and the music is great but I imagine meant a lot more to people who knew the songs.
8.3 - kinda fire. Very high quality. Didn’t want to skip any songs. Best: The Mule & Strange Kind of Woman (8.6). Worst: Space Truckin’ (8.0)
At first, as is often the case with live recordings, I thought the sound wasn't right. But this time it was different. I had some problems with Highway Star. After that, I liked the sound and Deep Purple's music anyway. I prefer the studio recordings, but this album is also great. 4/5
Really good album
One of the better live albums I've ever listened to. Would listen to this again
Normally, I only really listen to live albums if they use the base music in a super transformative way. Take Rock Dream by Boris With Merzbow or literally any live Swans album as an example. Ridiculously long solo sections are absolutely enough for me to call this transformative, and it's damn awesome. The minutes-long drum solo in The Mule was particularly awesome. I wanna do that. Really my only issue is how boring the closer is.
I'm not a huge fan of live albums. It's like, take the songs you love, and make them worse, then add a bunch of crowd noise. This one is good to very good. It gets a little screechy in parts, but you can tell these guys were *rocking* for the 70s. For the life of me I cannot fathom why this is on the list of albums to hear before you die. Like I said, it's good, but what elevates it over literally any Tool album, since there are apparently none on this list. I won't ding the album for that bullshit, but it's bullshit.
I really like Deep Purple, and this album was pretty good musically, but I really loathe live albums. I love to watch/listen to live music in real life, but when I want to sit down in my house and listen to good music, I want it to be perfectly polished and curated, not recorded in an imperfect setting with screaming crowds, rushed time and cracking voices. Don't get me wrong, the Deep Purple crew absolutely smashed these performances, and I did enjoy listening to the album, but I would've enjoyed it so much more if it had been a studio recording. Four stars.
I was shocked that this album got rated so low. I liked that they improvised so much on stage - it's not a "let's recreate the studio album on stage" show. I like how much fun they had on stage. When Gillan recreates the guitar sounds with his voice. Or when the organ picked up Oscar Peterson melodies in Lazy. I see that it was also super influential on Lars Ulrich/Metallica and others. Only downside are the long drum solos (too jazzy for a rock album) and that Black Night was included 3 times on CD2 (would have preferred the remaster without the extra set list)
A great, great live record. Everyone must listen.
Thought this was good for a live album and definitely elevated my opinion of deep purple, everybody was an expert in what they did. Think the vocals stood out the most, the guy had the range and strength of Jimmy Page, just doesn't use it as much on the records. It is fairly indulgent mind, if I was there I'd have rather they squeezed a couple of extra tracks in and cut a few of the solos and jam sessions out. All of that stuff would stop me listening again I think. One listen was good stuff though.
The Mule goes nuts and the part on Strange Kind of Woman where he’s shrieking along with the guitar is so awesome lol. Sounds like a knockout performance, enjoyed this way more than their studio albums that came up on this list
4 stars
Classic rock 4/5
Very good drumming, good classic rock
I have forgot how much I like the band. Great great live album.
I think I'll give this one a 4; it's very unique and different.
Alright I was gonna be a big curmudgeon about listening to a long album by a 70s rock band I only knew from one song, but this is actually really good. The goofy back and forth between the vocals and guitar in Strange Kind of Woman ultimately sold me.
I’ve slept on Deep Purple I think. This is a tremendous live album with some killer guitar parts. Maybe they’re a band that hasn’t aged as well as Black Sabbath or Zeppelin, at least in terms of popularity vs. their prime, but this album is pretty fantastic. If I’m honest I could only name Smoke on the Water from their catalog and maybe Highway Star, but these were perhaps the two lowlights of the record for me.
Pretty good. 4 stats
Having a father who was baptized by classic rock, I grew up with Deep Purple. I remember always liking the band as I definitely inherited the classic rock gene. Listening to this live album, what struck me most is how enthralled I was by the musicianship yet how ambivalent I was to the lead singer’s voice. This is one of the best Iive albums I’ve heard, even with the nearly 20-minute ear-bending rendition of Space Truckin’. I can’t imagine the melodic feast it was to hear this in person.
I really dig Deep Purple, and this is basically a greatest hits concert when they were at their peak in the mid-70s. Absolutely ripping it up during this show, great guitar solos and psychedelic sound. Only detriment is a couple of the songs are pushing 20 minutes with unnecessary noodling. A solid 4/5
I know of a few deep purple song but since they are more of my parents generation of music i haven't listen to a whole album or more than a few of their most famous songs. Listening through an entire album, and a lite one at that, was really fun. Its really good rock and roll and the audience added a nice touch to the feel of the songs.
My main point is that I don't know that the live element adds that much to the songs, except that they are very talented musicians (to which I say : duh), and that it sparked FOMO in me of not being there. But the record is strong, and the collection of songs are exceptional for the most part. I just think it doesn't feel like an album but rather a best of and it is waaaay too long, and sometimes a bit unnecessarily so. 20 minutes for most track on any project is too much, especially if the song stays within the same lane. The drum solo on Mule for example drags a little and is not as epic as I would like. However, at some other moments it really does a fantastic job at enriching a cool song. Strange kind of woman feels so much juicier and fun than the normal version, which is not as remarkable otherwise. Overall I'm happy to have listened to it, but yeah not ground breaking either. The second disc (I do not know if it should count or not) is way less fun, and the 3 black nights feels totally overkill. Only Lucille feels a bit fun, but I'm not impacting the score that much.
Such a powerhouse of an album! "Highway Star" and "Space Truckin'" are beyond this world. The album lacks a bit of power in the second third, but it recovers "in time" (pun intended). Call me a Bonham supremacist, but the drum solo on this album is not as enjoyable as I would have expected. One of the best live albums I've listened to, but not a perfect album IMO.
I'm a sucker for Highway Star which is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here for me. The other songs were alright and made for good listening while I was doing work, but most of it didn't stand out much to me. What did stand out were all the fun guitar riffs, which is why I'm giving this a higher rating than I would otherwise.
I feel like Deep Purple gave the game away when they wrote a song called “Space Trucking”, as that’s EXACTLY what their music sounds like to me! Definitely sounds like something you’d hear on a galactic FM station as you’re drifting through the asteroid belt. This live album gets off to a roaring start with Highway Star—it must have been amazing to see that guitar solo live. We slow to enjoy a short rest stop on Child of Time, to take in the sights before picking back up on the road with some sick drumwork. Smoke on the Water chugs along merrily to deliver us to an exceptional drum solo on The Mule! I think I blacked out during Strange Kind of Woman because I don’t remember anything there. Lazy sounds like I’m trying to talk to Gaster. But the band brings it all home on Space Trucking, closing off an enjoyable (if long) journey!
Classic early 70's Jam Rock. Well produced for a live album.
best songs live what can go wrong
Legendary live rock album. Explosive and crisp sound. Band at the top of their game.
Great Live album, but I'm admittedly not the biggest deep purple fan. Left with a great appreciation of them, but wouldn't listen to it again tbh
The quality of this recording and the musicianship is great. However, I prefer a little more "off-kilter" prog rock and less jamming. Therefore, while I see the value of this recording and the power of the band, the audience and purpose of the album becomes more narrow based on the improvisation and the fact that it is a live album that will only appeal to certain types of listeners based on preferences.
Not a single weak verse.
One of the first live records I bought.
The grand daddy of live heavy metal sounds.
It was okay
I’m not usually a fan of live albums, but this one definitely hits different. Beside showcasing the talents of the musicians behind Deep Purple, (of Smoke on the Water fame) the recording quality is superb. Great sounds, great music, what could go wrong?
This was an awesome live album.
I don't know what I thought heavy metal was before I started this project, but I definitely did not think it was this. The artistry of the guitar playing and the epic nature of the songs is definitely my jam. Not a huge fan of live albums though, so I'll leave this one as a solid 4.
Oh yea, deep purple rules
This is a really, really, good live album topped off by a 20 minute rendition of Space Truckin'.
These guys were having a lot of fun playing, and it's good old fashioned rock and roll. I like it.
7/10. Legendary setlist but also really annoying at points
Great live album.
++: Highway Star, Child in Time, Smoke on the Water, The Mule, Strange Kind of Woman, Lazy, Space Truckin' 9,5/10
4-
I can't imagine what it's like to see a show like this in person. I've never been to anything like it. An entire concert with minimal vocals and chock full of instrumental jamming. And they jammed. And they wailed. The finger bones melted right out of my skin on Space Truckin'.
Awesome drum solo. Really talented group altogether. It all started to sound the same by the end of the album. Songs are way too long in general and I didn't like the "live" aspects of the live album. Good album but not one of my favorites.
So much fun. A genuine joy to listen to. I love the jamming and the vocal performances.
Pretty good
Well I have never been the biggest Deep Purple fan - but live they really rock. That guy can sing y'all!
Deep Purple is a really good band, with great playing and some amazing songs. This album has especially strong live playing. It's compelling but still not great as a whole.
Deep Purple are really good at making live music and this shows it. The songs are just a vehicle off which they can make some incredible solos. The record is incredibly energetic and a real hard rock bop to listen to. This isn't an album to really listen to often though. 8 songs for 4 sides of an LP is really few and sometimes it all feels a bit too much to listen to. Still a great record to listen.
88/100. A fantastic live album that captures the band in their prime, full of energy and creativity. The performances are rich with improvisation, experimentation, and technical brilliance, giving it a prog rock feel despite its hard rock foundation. There's a real sense of playfulness and freedom in the way they handle their instruments, and you can tell the band was having a blast on stage.
Electrifying… 3.5/5
super cool
Really solid live album, love the mix of jazz and blues influences on their music. Solid drum solos, keyboards, didn’t know the singer could hit the falsetto like that so much. It’s not gonna be in the normal rotation but I’d give it another listen if it came on l
Monumental sound of the MkII line up with Gillan’s powerful vocals. Featuring tracks from the first 3 MkII albums and is none-more-metal. Even has an extended drum solo!
I've never been much of a fan of Live albums but I have to say this one is very very good. They really perform the hell out of these songs, the album flows pretty well, and particularly Disc 1 (the original release) is pretty a easy and rewarding listening of hard rock. What makes this album stand out is how excellent they were live. They work really well together, the solos are absolutely amazing and the vocals are up there as well. This is something that could only really happen on a Live Record, different solos and performances from the studio version that take it somewhere else. Every song has an extra 2 or 3 minutes that make that specific version unique and interesting. I listened to the 2014 Deluxe edition, and I felt that maybe three versions of "Black Night" and two of "Speed King" in Disc 2 were a bit too much. But the original release is probably one of the best live albums ever made, simply because of how powerful the performances are and how good Deep Purple were at that moment.
Kinda fun to drive to ngl
Not the biggest fan of live albums but this one's a smoker, 4.5, ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Good live album. Day 1 was the highlight. They really jammed out. Made driving egging Hawaii enjoyable.
Hate to say it, but this is great. Don’t normally care for Deep Purple, and Smoke On the Water is as obnoxious as ever, but this does everything a live album needs to do right.
Okay maybe the dads were onto something with this whole rock thing
Well, that was interesting. Deep Purple are one of the pioneers of the Heavy Metal sound that has given life to so many sub-genres. So it's fascinating to go back to the source and re-evaluate it. Much of it is excellent (Smoke... and Black Night are as good as their reputation, and the live sound / on-stage craft is excellent.) However, the indulgent solos and posturing does wear thin. Damned good stuff.
Don't love the idea of live albums BUT this one is THE live album
:)
Very nice live! 9/10
Sehr gutes Live-Album mit bekannten Songs. Gut performed. 4/5
After this I realize I have slept on Deep Purple, probably because I'm not the biggest Smoke on the Water fan, turns out I think every other song on this record is better. They seem so far ahead of their time in terms of heaviness, on par with Zeppelin and Sabbath but there's guitar work in this record I would have assumed came later with the likes of Van Halen, Blackmore was certainly an innovator, drumming and organ also amazing on this record. It's a little long but with it being a live album that's probably ok.
I am getting too old and cranky to listed to this type of music, but I used to live it when I was a teen
(first time properly listening to deep purple) thought it would be way more boring-dad-rock-y than it actually was, pleasantly surprised. felt a bit like yes crossed with led zeppelin
Better than most live albums. I don’t know how so many made it onto the list, to be honest, but this one at least has some merit.
Favorite Track: Highway Star
Deep Purple was introduced to me in the late 80's and I have had a minor obsession ever since. They are not really classic rock, although it would be super difficult not to classify their best known songs as such. It is as if they have a bit "extra" or something that puts them just outside the genre. Like a few other bands at the time that just don't quite fit that mold so well. This album is ... sort of spectacular and special. I think it is a great way for people who have no idea who Deep Purple is to be introduced. To boot, this album does not cover some of my absolute favorites of theirs! Yet here we are!
Maybe I didn't need the 9 minut solo of The Mule, but otherwise the concert is solid 8/10
Solid album. With one of the best drum solos ever
Very talented. Good setlist too Will I listen to again: 50%
Yeah, Space Trucking might be ten minutes longer than it should have been but this is otherwise a great live album
Emanuje z każdego utworu i z każdego dźwięku.
As a concert album it's A Grade quality. There is no way that japanese people understood even a word of British English but I could feel that it didn't stop anyone from having a blast.
Explosive, that's the word for this standard-setting live album. Every amplifier is pushed to its limit, with the PA set to have "everything louder than everything else" - thankfully, the ferocity of the band's playing matches the intensity of their sound as Deep Purple smash down, blow up and rip through some of their most classic material. I've loved this album for years, it still sounds as fresh and exciting as ever! Favourite tracks: Speed King, Lazy, Child in Time, Strange Kind of Woman, Black Night, Smoke on the Water, Child in Time again because it's just that fkn good
Zdecydowanie lepsza od poprzedniej. Instrumentalnie cudo. Same hity.
Classic rock at it best. Not an album for any mood. Fits perfectly into certain time and places.
Straight heattt, just didnt like the songs were so long but im just a casual. Loved every bit i listened to except the ear rape on lazy.
I would appreciate studio album more.
That was a really fun listen. It's nice to have some live albums and feel a bit more character. Songs are good, energy of the band is great.
Big opening track. Big vibe throughout. This is a really good live album. I've never heard a lot of these tracks before. This makes me just want to hear the album cuts. It's cool but ultimately live albums just aren't what I'm looking for. Maybe if I here more of the original cuts I'll circle back someday. Otherwise these guys are great instrumentalists and can compose a solid song. Keep on Space Truckin'
January 13, 2025 The last Deep Purple I listened to were albums #70 and #78, so I'm less fazed about hearing a live album featuring songs from both those albums. Don't call the redundancy police just yet :( - "Highway Star" is everything I want in a live rendition, even if it is pretty similar to the studio cut - we've reached the first big drum solo, with "Mule" - I think side 3 is the weakest, but it does provide some relief from the aural assault of the first two sides -I needed something to make the time commitment of this album worth it, and luckily side 4 delivers with a balls-to-the-wall rendition of "Space Truckin'", a highlight from Machine Head. - I shouldn't be surprised that my enjoyment level of Made in Japan falls somewhere between Machine Head and In Rock, since it contains both the pinnacle of early 70s metal as well as noodling that would make ELP blush. "Highway Star", "Space Truckin'" and "Child in Time" carry this to a 4-star.
Absolutely loved this. Wish I could have been there.
I tend to prefer Rainbow to Deep Purple where Ritchie Blackmore is concerned, but Made In Japan is still a strong piece of work. Sure, they go a little overblown fairly often, that's their style, but at their best with Highway Star in particular they create truly memorable hard rock that stands out. It's not a top tier effort but it's always listenable, something I knew before today and will after. Easy 4.
So, here it is, my third live album in a row with Made In Japan and just like the other live albums i have done in this row, it is a great one. The songs here frequently took many twists and turns which i enjoyed and the recording quality sounded absolutely great on a majority of the songs. There were however, some problems that make me not like this album as much as the studio albums. The album did drag itself out in some places and there was the fact that The Mule did sound incredibly messy with it's composition. These problems aside, i do think that this album is yet another great album from these guys. Best Song: Lazy Worst Song: The Mule Side note: Since i have done every Deep Purple album on this project, here is my ranking of them 1. Deep Purple In Rock 2. Machine Head 3. Made In Japan
Cd 1 ++++ Cd 2 ????
I listened to the original 7-track edition and really enjoyed this, one of the few great live albums. The recording and mix sounded clean and clear with plenty of dynamics. The excessively long solos were a little OTT, but overall a very worthy inclusion.
Classic stuff. Drawn out in places. Better with Dio.
It's like Machine Head but they play the 5 minute songs for 18 minutes. As a fan of overly long drum solos, I approve of this message - it actually rocks. A really fun mix of hard rock and prog, without feeling too far up its own ass. "Double live album" still remains the scariest combination of words ever written though. Four outta five.
You like cars? You like rock? Have I got a song for you! You like shit burning to the ground? You like rock? Have I got a song for you! You like space ships and truck drivers? You like rock? Have I got a song for you. You like 2 minute long drum solos? Have I got a song for you!
Another double album, but this is one I can confidently get behind. Deep Purple in Rock was one of the most surprisingly kick-ass albums I’ve heard in a long time. And even just that first listen cemented me as a fan of their work. Made in Japan is a legendary set of recordings from the bands various performances in Japan in 1972. The majority of the material featured here comes from Machine Head, an album I have not heard. So, aside from Smoke on the Water and Child in Time, most of this was new to me. You could make the argument that there really isn’t a reason for this to be on the list as their two most acclaimed records already are. But I think there is enough added to these songs to make them feel worthwhile. The length of some of these tracks is extended well beyond the original length. Whether it’s improvised guitar parts, or the sick drum solo that occupies the majority of The Mule’s runtime, they always add something. Although I’ll admit that as epic as these guys are, there are moments where even I was sitting wondering when it would end, because it felt like it would go on forever. What makes this interesting for me is simply the band themselves. I just find them to be an incredibly enjoyable band to listen to. And on these particular recordings, they sound absolutely massive. Amazing performances all around. I mean, if you aren’t even a little impressed by Ian Gillan’s belting on Child in Time, I don’t know what to say. At its best, this album is some of the finest live hard rock you can hear. At its worst, it’s only a little lackluster. Rating: 8/10
One of the greatest live albums!
3-4
Songs are just way too long for me but the talent is clear
enjoyed the long instruments versions of their classics Favorite track: Mule other picks: smoke on the water, highway star, lazy
I don't think a live album has to be on a must-listen-to list as they are, although live, not as good as a studio recording. This is one rare exception and it is telling that the group was hesitant a long time before recording a live album.
Hsll yeah
Cool vibes
unbelievable live album - like absolutely floored. It's not often i can listen to a 20 minute version of a song and not get bored, but the twists and turns of the solos and extended builds keep you thoroughly invested.
Don't love live albums but they do sound good these guys
Enjoyed this way more than the studio albums, a slightly generous 4 but this is easily the best of theirs I've come across
So much energy bursting from this. Disc 2 is mostly repeats and I didnt really care for Lucille, but I otherwise thought it was great. What a classic rock album should feel like.
A solid rock album filled with a high-level of musical skill and a great sense of showmanship. Most tracks on here are a little too long for my usual music tastes, but these are live performances filled with improvised solos and crowd interactions, so I can't say I'm surprised nor will I hold that against the album. I can only imagine how electric it would've been to actually watch this live. You can certainly feel the energy even if you're just listening to it.
I never really like Deep Purple, so I was never going to rate this album highly. If you like Deep Purple, it's undeniably a great collection of their best material and live is always exciting. But it does nothing for me.
Classic rock to a T, and a fun live album. Smoke on the water baby!
Don’t normally go for live albums, but this was actually a really good listen. Classic Deep Purple tracks with just the right amount of pretension to make it really enjoyable.
One of the best live albums, ever I think. Along with the MC5, James Brown at the Apollo And Otis Redding live in Europe. Although I’m not really sure we need three deep purple albums and the top 1001
Such a classic live album. I knew most of the album versions of these songs, but live on Made In Japan kicks it up a notch. Without researching it, I'm guessing that this was the blueprint for many live albums/performances to follow - with lengthy screeching guitar/keyboard (organ) solos along with an epic Ian Paice drum solo. -1 star for the overindulgent version of Space Truckin' live! Liked Songs Added: - Highway Star - Strange Kind Of Woman
As good as hard rock got back in the day.
I give it a 3.6 rounded to 4 stars. Awesome to hear Deep Purple live at their peak playing some of their greatest songs. The entire band are great musicians and they rock out on all of the tracks. I feel like they could have done a better job with the recording. Some of the tracks include fuckups like Richies guitar part at the beginning of Smoke on the Water and the solo for Highway Star. Overall a great live album and worth a listen. I'm not sure if it would be in my top 1001 though.
8/26/24. Always been a fan of Deep Purple and appreciate their contribution to rock music. Great energy in this live set.
Not usually a fan of live albums, but I found this one fairly enjoyable and fun. Some good riffing and a fantastic drum solo.
Damn. That rocked.
Man to be around when these bands were playing live and were at the height of their success would be amazing! This is a great album, and even better that it’s live! Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: yes Favourite Song: Black Night, but it’s hard to choose.
I really enjoyed this album because I like Deep Purple and they do tend to shine live...or did at this point. 5 of these 7 songs are already in the book in the studio version. I have the same issues with this album that I had with the Bob Dylan live album, though admittedly less so. The sound is great and the songs are great. In the genre of live albums this is a very well known and highly respected one. That's my only hesitation in giving Made in Japan a five-star review. There isn't a bad song on here and I know the jamming turns some people off. I rarely have an issue with jamming as long as the song is going somewhere. Live albums are hard because usually a person has to like a band's studio music before they will enjoy the album. Tough not to recommend Made in Japan because it is so tight and well-played. I think we could have left off a studio album if we include this one. But hey, Deep Purple is English so I guess I should understand based entirely on that.
These are some of the dirtiest guitar solos I've heard from a live album. Favourite Songs: Highway Star, Child in Time, Smoke on the Water, Strange Kind of Woman. Least Favourite Songs: The Mule, Lazy.
Wow that boy can sing! Fantastic live album
Live show is cool - vibed to it. Drummer is crazy good. Don't know if I would ever think to listen to this again, but its classic rock & roll.
Well this is another really fun live rock album. Such a good recording for the early 70s that's mixed really well. I love them goofing around. This type of energy and improvisation actually reminds me a lot of my favorite band's live shows. I bet it was absolutely electric live. I feel like this is what rock music is all about. I can't even imagine being a big Deep Purple fan and then going to see them live and getting this show. It would be amazing. I've never been into Deep Purple at all but this was still very fun to listen to.
So much energy with this record! What a blast. The guitars, the keys, the vocals, the drums. In the spirit of "This is Spinal Tap," they definitely went up to 11 on this one. I really don't love high pitch opera sounding vocals, but some reason this one really does it for me. Especially on "Child in Time," they're really going for it. That whole song might make the entire record for me. It's so epic. It's also impossible to beat "Smoke on the Water." This live version is so rad. I love how they riff on the original riff. Bending the notes, hitting that whammy bar where it makes sense. It keeps you on your toes.
banger
BABABABABABABABABAABAAAAAAABABABABABABABABABABABAABBAABBAABAAAAAAAA
This is an interesting one. Could be a 5, could be a 1. Is it an enjoyable album, with talented artists, having fun and playing good songs? Absolutely! Does it deserve a place on this list? Does it fuck! So redundant considering their other inclusions on the list. But they are pioneering and in my opinion much more palatable than their peers. Dunno? I guess… 4 stars?
Riktigt bra skiva/spelning rakt igenom.
Some of my favourite Deep Purple tracks. But having the studio albums on this list is enough. We don't need all of the same songs live as well. Scored as if we hadn't already been overloaded with Deep Purple albums.
In general, I personally don't see the appeal of live albums - especially for a band I'm not familiar with outside of 'Smoke on the Water.' Instead, I listened to some of their other studio recordings. Love me some 70s Dad Rock.
A document of a band truly at the height of their powers. You could make the argument that this is the band's best album. But if you did, I think that would reveal how you feel about long (or long-winded) drum solos on live records. Are those really enjoyable to listen to? As much as I like Ian Paice, I just can't really pretend it's something that works on a record. Maybe in a live performance. Maybe. Absolutely ripping versions of "Highway Star," "Smoke on the Water," and my all-time favourite Deep Purple cut, "Space Truckin." Hard to believe that there were no overdubs and that the band didn't care for it much when it was mixed. Great font on the cover. A
Sounds like a good show
As far as live albums go, really solid. Would rather listen to this than any Greatest Hits compilation.
Deep purple cuyons!
Deep Purple has been drowned in the Smoke on the Water image, not painting the full picture of what they truly are: metal as fuck.
At its best this captures the classic Deep Purple line-up at its heaviest and melodic best. The combination of Jon Lords keyboard and Richie Blackmore's guitar virtuosity allied to the operatic singing of Ian Gillan is best represented in the first half of the album on Highway Star, Child in Time and Smoke on the Water. unfortunately the second half is generally more throwaway - the Mule and Lazy are mediocre and Space Trucking is way too long. The original version of the album would have been better served with, for example, Speed King and Black Night. Really more of a 3.5 than a 4
I genuinely loved this.
Good fun music
Not sure why this album is on here when we already had Machine Head with the same songs.
3: Made in Japan er et virkelig fedt live album.
Smoke on the Water on other timeless tracks, live version that's really great.
I do not care for Deep Purple, a little too straight and blues based on the rock n roll for me. But I liked this more than I was expecting given that and my aversion for double live albums. I have always maintained that whether or not Deep Purple rocks is not in question, it's just more that they are not for me. And yes the double live album definitely rocks.
it has great songs in the album and for this album i can ignore the fact that it is a live album
I mean this is an objectively insanely good live performance that I enjoyed listening to. Hard rock aint my thing so I won't be returning to it much butttt damn good I cannot lie!!!
I loveski this. Cool funky sound and the solos are bangin
White grandpa rock
Although it features many now mocked elements of 70s hard rock (Ian Gillan’s high screeches, the 5+ minute drum solo on The Mule, etc.), the energy of this set carries it plentily. A great performance from a great band!
4.5
Although not to my personal taste, respect has to be given to Deep Purple. Their brand of progressive rock which was so popular during the early 70's achieved global success, hence the title of this live album. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar playing is legendary in its own right but Ian Gillan's screechy vocals leaves my ears cringing 😅. This album is worthy of acclaim even though its not for me.
Never listened to a Deep Purple album. Of course I knew Smoke On the Water, but this was a pleasant listen. Good live performance, would have been cool to see in person. My favorite part of the album was the back and forth between the singer and the guitar player on Strange Kind of Woman. Songs like Space Truckin’ make me realize that old heads that make fun of music for being just noise don’t have any excuse. Sometimes noise sounds amazing. Standouts: Child in Time, Smoke on the Water, Strange Kind of Woman, and Space Truckin’.
Great album, One of the best live albums ever recorded!
4/5
Technically impressive, but the amount of indulgent instrumentals is a bit much for me. Smoke on The Water boosts up the score a bit.
Maybe I'm in a good mood. Maybe it was great
Really enjoyed this one. The live recording is of amazing quality. The songs are fun too, LOVE Highway Star. Only criticism really is that I don’t really see myself coming back to it, but I enjoyed my time with it. 7/10
The album had been playing for awhile and so I looked to see how far I got. I only was four songs in. Off to a rough start. After listening to the entire album, it makes me want to check out their other music. Glad to hear that there isn't as much cheering between tracks as other live albums.
Teen me getting into music by stealing my dad's CDs.
Deep Purple is a much deeper band than I knew based on prior, limited exposure. (“Smoke on the Water”? Meh.) Generally appreciated the extended jams and prog elements more than some of the riff rock, but it’s hard to complain. ‘Cause there’s a DRUM SOLO haha. And copious rock organ. And — surprise! — vocal wailing that foreshadows the best and worst of “hard rock” yet to come. Good stuff. A nice surprise.
Holy hell, what I’d do to see this live. This man can belt. 3.5
3.8 Album really sounded great. Child in time was a standout, the vocals are hilariously over the top but I dug it.
long winded badass guitar solos
Really good!
Great live early British Metal
bien serio 8/10
Listened to the original release as the other ones are way too long. This is usually my example of a good live album other than Alive by Daft Punk. It's a fun listening experience and almost perfect if it weren't for space truckin. It just drags on too long and gets overly repetitive.
Highway Star goes so hard, recorded and live. By itself that elevates this album. Deep Purple rocks and I think I like their sound more than Led Zeppelin. For a live album, it's pretty clean sounding and has long jams in like every song. Child In Time is pretty excellent, too.
One of the best Live albums I've heard
good
Early seventies heavy metal, pushing the envelope. Everything afterwards owes itself to this.
From others reviews I thought I'd find this boring but it turned out to be epic.
Great!
Trippy. Live. Awesome solos. Awesome tunes
Prett good
This was better than I expected. Proper rock and roll and great guitar riffs. I liked it so much I listened to the deluxe edition. I have always loved a live album Favourite song: Smoke on the water and black night Least favourite: none, all good Album artwork: great cover
Nice
I liked the live aspect of this album and was surprised how many of their songs I knew. Some of the songs kind of bled together and didn’t stand out. Overall good vibes
Bangers
I usually dislike live albums, but this was fantastic. Some good, pure, rock and roll.
Great live album. Must've been a great show. Lots of classics here. Fave track: The Mule
Really great live album. The last track was a little too long, although the drum solo was long but I loved it. Unlike a lot of other people, I generally do like live albums.
Great stage presence
Dope, not too sure I’ve really heard this album before but have heard of it. Interesting though, first live album on this list..
#rock #solomusic #smoke on the water
Amazing playing and recording on this live album. I could do without some of the extended solo sections but many of the live flourishes are super fun too.
Solid
Lovely live set. Deep Purple has some face melting guitar solos spicing up some of their classic hits. Normally I'm not a big fan of live albums because of the decrease in audio quality. While I do think this album suffers from that issue, it is still a really solid listen.
really good mayb 7-8/10
A fantastic live recording from start to finish. From Ian Gillan's powerful vocal performances, the borderline almost hard rock and prog rock influences found on tracks like The Mule and Space Truckin' (the latter of which features some heavy distortions in the beginning that sound almost ear-piercing), this is genuinely such an energetic performance from start to finish. The only real downside I can say is that the mixing on Gillan's vocals could be better, as it can be kind of hear his voice over the powerful instruments especially on the first-half of the tracklist.
General thoughts: I'm sorry, I genuinely though Deep Purple was a meme band, but they are not, they reaaaaally rock live, 'Smoke in the water' isnt even the best song in the album, I dont know how is that their insignia song if they have others much better, really. Also, one of the greatest compliments I can give, they really can do long songs without boring the listener; vocals, instruments, all amazing, and the solos are masterfully planned and executed. Favorite songs: Highway Star Worst songs: Lazy, & Space truckin'. I know what I said but this is too long, around the 12mins mark would be a good end, that way it'd be a 4/5. Cover: Simple but I like it, usually for live albums the best is to use a shot that captures the atmosphere of the concert. Real rating: 3.92
Great album.
Fantastic! Smoke on the water isn’t even the best track on this one
The album is okay, not my cup of tea but it's a very impressive recording of a live act. Despite it being labelled as "hard rock" on Apple Music, the project feels more than that, transcending into several genres and styles that make it stand out amongst other hard rock projects I've heard before.
Gotta love the energy
Definitely some cool moments here. I felt the drum solo was way too long though.
Classic 70’s rock and roll jam band. ❤️
Deep. 4
Excellent rock album. Love the heavy 70's organ sound.
Great 70's rock
Yet another live album entry on the list, this time from certified dad rock legends Deep Purple. First thing that stands out is how well his vocals hold up in the live environment; dude had pipes. I do love Highway Star as a high-energy opener. Some sloppiness to the guitar play, but the drums and organ are both tight. And as far as a live mix goes, this is pretty solid for the technology of the time. Nothing is too terribly washed out or distorted. Child in Time takes us towards a spacier / proggier mood. Keys feel really distant and weak relative to what I remember of the studio. If I'm to nitpick, I feel like the song runs into the jam section a little unnaturally. Like it has a really nice spacious groove and then the guitar just sort of takes the ball and starts running. Not angry with the end result, but it felt like it could have been done better. Otherwise, this song rips. Love how they take the time to introduce Smoke on the Water as if it is a less known piece. Today, it's every kid's first guitar riff. Some feedback in the mix near the 3 minute mark is a bit annoying, but the play itself is nothing if not solid. Guitar solo feels a little behind the rest of the band, but the tone is great. The Mule is basically just an open drum solo, and a damned solid one at that. Through the end, there is more of the same along with a spaced out Space Truckin to close things out. This is a solid live album on which the band spreads out some of their larger hits, giving a lot of space to the drum and guitar to show their merits. I would say this isn't something I'll be back to in haste, but it was enjoyable enough. Soft to middling 4.
Highway Star will always remind me of Rock Band. Fun live album with some good jams. I like their use of the synth. It gives me a little hint of prog rock which I enjoy.
Highway Star is awesome. I feel like this was in Guitar Hero or Rock Band and loved it. Rings true today. Second song ends on a heater. Smoke on the Water is the classic here and it sounds great. Holy hell that drum solo in The Mule was sick. I learned a whole new language during it. The beginning of Space Truckin reminds me of the Doors. The end of Space Truckin reminds me of a spaceship.
I did not expect live concert albums to be a part of this list, but okay... Being a live performance, there is a lot of extended jam sessions on this album. The most egregious example is Space Truckin', which lasts for almost 20 minutes. That being said, there is always something interesting going on in these jams that make them worth listening to, whether it be a seven-minute drum solo or a duel between a guitar and Ian Gillan's screeching falsetto. It may not be the most impressive thing out there, but it is definitely a good album to have playing in the background while doing other things. Best Song: Child in Time Worst Song: Lazy Underrated Gem: The Mule Best Guitar Impersonation: Strange Kind of Woman Album Score: 8/10
Album quality declined towards the end but it had some good songs and great musical showcase.
Early 70's hard rock. Great songs, but too long for my tastes now. As a teenager, this record ruled. And yes, like millions of others at the time, the Smoke on the Water riff was the first thing I figured out on guitar.
Best deep purple songs live
