Awesome album.

yeah yeah

So many great songs on this. It's just a classic. Some of it can feel a bit like filler now that so many songs are so well known, but the filler doesn't disappoint either. Good stuff.

Ho man, this takes me back. Waiting outside La Grande Stereo & Music for them to open so my buddy and I could by the cassette. Love the smell of a new cassette and reading the liners. Something that is definitely missing from digital music. This album changed my taste in music for many years.

Legendary

Love this album and could easily listen on repeat.

The drum sound alone is almost enough to earn five stars. However, when the songwriting is on point, James sounding the best he’s ever done (and ever will) and almost every track is a winner (Through the Never doesn’t quite do it), the 5 stars are a given. One of the great rock records of the 90s, and it’s not even Metallica’s best album

This album was transformational for Metallica, moving away from thrash metal and into mainstream success. I listened to this CD so much in high school. Relevance to this list: 5/5 Personal enjoyment: 5/5

This is one of the greatest metal albums ever. Metallica’s Bay Area thrash roots are on full display here yet are tempered with more melodic impulses. These impulses can be heard in earlier albums, but there are more mature here. The ballads on this album are some of their best songs as well.

This Ive listened over 100 times start to finish was one of my 2 let it run album when in high school along with appetite. Hardcore fans called it a sell out cause they downed a tempo but the powers reamins the same and to me is a none commercial music album that made it into mainstream and helped spark the whole genere. Begining with enter sandman was a show stopper and followed by sad but true was absolutely brilliant in a side A with all singles. I find that it could have used maybe 2 songs less but since it works so well as a whole I could not even think of which ones to pull. This is a masterpiece and one of the top 5 most important metal albums in history. This was a game changer. Simply mind blowing

# Playlist track - Enter Sandman # Notes - I've listened to Metallica when I was younger and it would immediately transport me to somewhere else. It was fast, angry, energetic, but also cool as fuck. - The album cannot keep the pace from "Enter Sandman" throughout the entire play time. But that is just a bar too high. Still giving this all the stars.

Pretty awesome. A bit longer than it needs to be and kinda one-note, but that one-note is really good. I haven't listened to any other Metallica so maybe that is coloring my opinion compared to their other albums, but this one hit the spot.

Great Metallica album all songs are good on this album

So many bangers. Not even a metal guy but you can tell it's top of its class

Goed geheel.

Is it Metallica's best album? No. Is it dripping with masculinity? Yes. This album isn't for every day or every mood. Does it rock? Very very much yes. 5-stars.

Great album all around. So many good songs. Might have not ever sat down and listened to the entire album before. But glad I did. First really great album I've got from this 1001 album generator.

Masterpiece. The maturation and refinement of the speed metal genre.

So this is the second time I've shocked myself by liking a metal album on this list. I groaned when I first saw it because, despite the only Metallica song I knew being "Nothing Else Matters," their band name lead me to the assumption that their music would be full of unlistenable screaming. Not the case. Yes, most of this is heavier than "Nothing Else Matters," but it's certainly not less listenable than most of the hard rock stuff on this list. I've been getting quite a few hard rock/borderline metal albums lately, and I was over the lyrical content of most rock music on this list ages ago. Only a few days ago, I found myself wondering why rock bands couldn't write intelligent lyrics. And only a few days later, here we are. Maybe it's because this is technically metal, but it's close enough to rock that I'm able to say: "Finally!" This isn't more mindless sexual nonsense. These lyrics are actually GOOD. They're thoughtful, and inspirational, and explore a lot of really important themes. Okay, the first two tracks struck me as a little creepy at first, but both are still very well done. "Enter Sandman" has a really catchy chorus and sounds like it's about someone killing their girlfriend in their sleep, but it could actually be about institutional brainwashing. For most of "Sad But True," I was thinking: "whoah, this is a really abusive partner!" But then, towards the end of the song, it reveals that he's singing to himself instead. So this is a song about how we abuse ourselves- a very common theme on this album and a universal one. Then we get to "Holier Than Thou" and I'm just like: "Oh yeah! Go get 'em!" with every single line. This song is about the kind of person everyone hates: that annoying self righteous character who always has to prove they're better than everyone else. But it was when "The Unforgiven" played that I really started to realise that I was actually enjoying this album. This song is gorgeous and heartbreaking, but also very catchy. As far as I gathered, it's about a man looking back on his life and feeling it was wasted. Then we have "Wherever I May Roam," which is all about being a wanderer who doesn't fit in- a topic close to my heart. It's beautifully written and punchy and so much fun. "Don't Tread on Me" wasn't my favourite, but is still good. It's all about getting back at people who wrong you. And then they literally get existential on "Through The Never." I couldn't believe what I was hearing- I thought that kind of subject matter was wrongfully confined to "quiet" music? I think a metal backdrop actually perfectly suits these lyrics and the mental turmoil that often accompanies existential thoughts. "Nothing Else Matters" is, of course, a gorgeous classic with beautiful, inspirational lyrics about being true to yourself. Surprisingly, it's still one of my favourites here. When listening to "Of Wolf and Man," I was reminded of a more little known album I've been obsessed with lately: Marya Stark's "Lineage." A new age folk album influenced by tribal music, it's all about healing by returning to the wilderness, and reawakening the wild within. "Of Wolf and Man" not only has the same message, but a lot of the same lyrical imagery as is found on "Lineage." And since Marya Stark's album mostly focusses on women, I'm glad Metallica did a song like that focussing on men. "The God that Failed" is I think a critique of religion. Not my favourite but still well written. However, it was when "My Friend Of Misery" started playing that I really couldn't believe what I was hearing, and how relevant it is to my recent philosophical musings. The song is about someone with a saviour complex. I think it does a great job at dissecting what that looks like and how detrimental it is. I love how it came at it from a more forgiving angle and focussed on the misery this person is causing themselves rather than how it makes them "egotistical" or whatever. We wrap up with "The Struggle Within" which is the most straightforward look at the album's central theme: How much of our suffering is self created. We're left with the inspirational message that we don't have to suffer. That we can break free of all this mental turmoil and just enjoy life.

one of my favourites all time!

One of my stinkiest friends adores Metallica. Naturally, that made me always assume they were bad. However, as time went on and I’ve listened more and more, they’ve definitely grown on me. Looking at the tracks on this album, there’s definitely a fair few that I recognise. Let’s listen! Songs I already knew: Enter Sandman, Sad But True, The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters Favourites: The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters If I remember correctly, I think this was the album that divided a lot of Metallica fans, with the detractors labelling them sell outs. However, I’d say this has been my favourite by a pretty large margin. The songwriting here kept my attention throughout, and there is a nice variety between the harder hitting songs and the softer ballads. I understand why some people got miffed at the softer side of the band, but I personally like this.

Amazing, i love every song, each one of them is iconic

Fun fact: My first ever CD was the Black Album rearranged into lullabies for babies. My dad married my mum to a violin rendition of Nothing Else Matters - this album holds a special place in my heart and is one of Metallica's best works.

Great album - I like it

Love it. Nice mix of uptempo/ballads. Lars is underutilized, but drumming fits the styles of the various songs. This album was the first Metallica I ever heard, so I'm immune to the "change of direction" or "sellout" criticism of it. Still holds up.

Metallica - Metallica This is the Metallica album that brought me into the Metallica camp. My friend Jon will yell blasphemy at this as he was listening to Metallica from the very beginning. While "...in justice for all" and the song "One" was the gateway, it was this album that brought fully through the gate! I can now go back and enjoy the earlier Metallica (especially Masters of Puppets) but at the time, I didn't really care for their music. They weren't glam rock enough for me (ie: Poison, Winger, Motley Crue, Trixter, etc.) The late 80s was a magical time. And I'm so glad that I can look back at all of the music from that time with love. It's truly the music that first took hold of me and I'm so glad that I now find enjoyment with all different genres and styles. Plus I love creating playlists that have so many different sounds that just somehow come together. So, Metallica (the black album) is one of those albums that I will never tire of. 5/5

yahoo!

One of my favorite albums of all time. This album just has incredible riffs, lyrics, and hits hard. 5/5!

Contrary to popular belief that this album in fact contains colour

Is this what they call black music?

One of my favorite albums of all time. While many folks look at the "regular" cuts, the last 3 tracks on this album close it out in an amazing way! The whole album is quite the emotional roller coaster ride, dealing with anger, grief and depression; as well as happiness, joy, and determination.

Gear: Grado Hemp Mix (2021 Remaster): Saftig, voll und mitreißend - mein Gold-Standard für Metal. Musik: Nachvollziehbar polarisierend. Wertung: 🐍🐍🐍🐍(🐍)/5

A lot of all time classics of heavy Metal.

Classic

Love this album.

Freakin' awesome!

Polarising Metallica album, to some they sold out, to some it was the gateway to metal. It was my gateway to metal, so my judgement is pretty clouded. I loved this as an early teenager, they wouldn't sell out till Load in my eyes, but this was epic, brash, loud, deep, meaningful, meaningless. As soon as "Enter Sandman" kicked in, I knew loud guitars was that which I desired (not fuel not fire), not the indie dance and acid house rave scene that was sweeping the nation. Grunge hadn't come around yet, Britpop was years away, so metal was my jam, much to my parents derision. The aforementioned "Enter Sandman" lets you in to what this album is all about, it gently lures you in before Lars bass drum kicks you in the gut, Kirk and James guitar play is a shock to the system and they let Jason be heard... Bob Rock's production can be problematic but he's in his element here. It's a fucking monster of an album in every sense...

🤘🤘🤘🤘

By scaling down the excesses of their more complex Thrash Metal albums, Metallica were able to breakthrough to the mainstream with a strong, sleek and heavy-ass Metal album. The really interesting thong about The Black Album is how, despite the relative dearth of riffs compared to say …And Justice For All, Hetfield et al are able to play around with variations, creating interesting interpretations and interpolations of their own and, in the case of Don’t Tread On Me, others music. It makes for a fun experience to listen to, even if the lyrics are a bit of a downer. But, in true Metal spirit, the lyrics are personal enough to provide for an interesting examination of Hetfield as a character. It’s a very personal set of lyrics, dealing with trauma regarding family, addiction, and mental health. Recently, Metallica have been emphasising the joy of life, ‘Are you alive? How does it feel to be alive?’ has become a rallying cry at their concerts, and I think that the seed of that joy was planted during the Black Album. It’s an album full of pain and anger, but it’s music is still so full of life and beauty. Despite all the shit, they’re still kicking. And there’s something really inspiring about that

Ah, Metallica right when they sold out. Been a fan since 84 and initially questioned the change in direction from thrash to “mainstream.” This record is a monster. Once of the best sounding records I have ever heard. Five stars is not enough here.

Cranked this shit while driving the strip in Crystal Lake just like the old days.

A classic—heard most of this from the kids’ rooms while they were in high school. Glad to revisit—thanks and happy it made the list.

Could have given this a 5* after the first track ! Brilliant classic !

Not my favourite Metallica album but probably the most important for getting me into Metallica and metal in general. I read the other reviews with amusement...

Almost tears of joy when this popped up after that last one. It had almost made me give up on music forever. Huge.

Knew a couple of these songs from back in the day, plenty of new ones too. Great album with lots of big hits.

I hate Metallica. The songs are too long. But I love this album. Fuck.

Wow this album is way better than I thought it would be. Not too big a metal/metallica fan, but these songs are really strong. Enter sandman I have some fond memories of, as they played live on Pinkpop, and it was afterwards one of the first songs I heard on the radio driving back, reliving the experience again. The unforgiven is also really nice.

An iconic album.

In my opinion this is their best album . Great songs, great production, and just the feeling when I listen to it.

Yet another timeless classic

Ahhh, when Metallica stopped making noise and learned they had something to say. This is Metallica at its best, still load, still metal, still deep …..but finally crystal clear.

Soundtrack of my youth. I had the album, posters, and mullet to prove it.

Love this album. Every song is a banger. And I don’t even love Metallica because I feel that the drums could just be so much better, however it was the early 90s and real metal was only just coming into its own so it’s fine. Still a 5/5

Must have album in any collection… Masterpiece…

Great. Play it loud.

This album goes crazy. Not a single miss.

This album is an absolute masterpiece.

Love every bit of this pretty much other than Enter Sandman just because I can go anywhere and here it. Work like this is how you transcend genres as a band.

I’m biased, grew up with this one, absolute classics in here and imo best Metallica record

Somehow they made heavy metal accessible and mainstream.

4.5/5 Best Track: Nothing Else Matters

Man, this brought back memories.

Hey-yeeeeeaaAH. 5 staaaaaarsAH. 4 stars truly listening back, but it's a classic in my personal catalogue.

Great album. Peak Metallica.

a classic. it really stands the test of time, a great album!

Famtastic!!!

Quite repetitive and nothing stand out but good voice and music

Great album tons of fun and great intro Album to Metallica

There were a lot of disputes about Metallicas direction when this came out. The songs are shorter and maybe a bit on the commercial side but nonetheless a great album.

Still so good. So fresh.

what a sick album, amazing how so many bangers are on the same thing, and even the lesser known ones are good

Second metallica album in a row, this one I am much more familiar with. I think it says a lot seeing as how so many of the songs on this album ended up become some of Metallica's most famous songs.

Amazing iconic metal album

Epic classic.

a landmark in metal, filled with tracks that have become genre anthems. it's a timeless classic that still resonates powerfully, capturing a sense of familiarity and awe. songs like "enter sandman" and "nothing else matters" are more than just hits; they're the essence of what makes metal so impactful. listening to this album is an exhilarating experience, and this was not the first and certainly not the last time.

I used to have this album. It still rocks, I like it a lot even though I have heard it so many times. Brings me back to when I tried to learn to play guitar.

Top shelf. One of my fav albums.

This was just great. I can't wait to listen to it again.

Some excellent tunes here. So far the best of the metal music.

Nothing else Matters - just wow, always a pleasure to listen to

Lol, 6 of the first 7 tracks on this album are on my gym playlist. Favorite track: Nothing Else Matters

It's almost as good as St. Anger.

The definitive Metallica album. Best sound, Best songs, Best mixing. Another easy 5 stars.

One of my favorites of all time

Can’t go wrong with Metallica. Listened to this album during a workout and was a great listen!

1. 5/5 Classic song that I'd heard before but never listened to with intention. Great song. 2. 4/5 Good song, bit I couldn't grasp the meaning behind it. 3. 5/5 4. 4/5 5. 5/5 6. 5/5 Great Solo 7. 5/5 My Favorite song thus far 8. 5/5 Another great classic song that I vaguely knew. 9. 5/5 10. 4/5 11. 5/5 12. 4/5

great album

The quintessential Metal album. Metallica is just a classic. The riffs, the drums, the singing, the lyrics - it's all around a certified banger. Not even my favourite Metallica album but I can't find anything bad about it. Favourites: Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters

🙏🏼

9/10 first time actually listening to a metallica album in full in one sitting (two sittings tbh) and wow.. AN EXPERIENCE

It was one of the first CDs I bought for my portable player and heart it over and over again. Enter Sandman is one of my favorites of all time! In addition, I have seen them live in the Weserstadion in Bremen together with my best friend Holger. What a concert! During Nothing Else Matters Holger has called Electra to say her that he loves her! Hach! ❤️

The first four songs are straight head bangers, the next few start to feel like the same and I was ready to rate this a 4 and then nothing else matters provides a complete 180 and then back to head bangers.

One of my top 10 favorite albums ever

one of the best album that i ever heard

every song on this record is amazing 10/10

I really love this album by Metallica, there are a lot of great songs on here. One of the best metal bands during the 80's and 90's, I have a lot of fond memories of listening to their songs.

Uhhhhh 100 stars. Hands down. The thrash metal gods!!! I was still living in Montana when I first heard this album. I remember very distinctly being in the back of Justin's suv..I think it was a Blazer?? can't remember but we were going to a party somewhere in the mountains and he had this tape playing the whole way. Such a great album all the way through, every song is incredible! If I have the chance to catch these guys live before they stop performing I would pay stupid money...I think they are actually on tour right now. But the closest they come is Denver? I'll have to look it up. Anyways, like I said 100 stars if I could but 5 will have to do.

If there's any genre that I listen to on my own time more than any other, it's probably metal. And yet, I haven't gotten an outstanding metal album yet for this project. Sure, I started with Van Halen and that was pretty good, but I have yet to get a truly defining metal album for this project. Until now. This is a really good album from one of the greatest metal bands of all time. Say what you will about their later albums or Lars's drumming or whatever. Their first 5 albums are some of the best of the genre, and this was the last of those. This is probably the band's conservative album. Not so much in the political sense (aside from Don't Tread on Me), but rather in the sense that it's not quite as experimental as albums like Master of Puppets or And Justice For All. Despite that, the style is so finely tuned that nothing else matters (see what I did there?). There is some variance in here. Look at this album's two most iconic tracks, Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters. The sounds have similar aspects, but the tone is very different between the two songs. The instrument playing is quite good, as this was near the end of Metallica's peak. I was surprised by the quality of James Hetfield's singing for songs like "The Unforgiven". Metallica's performance when playing live can be hit or miss, but the studio quality for those early albums was top-notch. The writing is solid and gets the points across well. Those points, by the way, remain relevant to this day. Overall, while this album probably isn't Metallica's best, it does remain as their most successful album, and absolutely deserves to be on this list for its excellent quality and cultural significance. Light 5/5.

Favorite Songs: Enter Sandman Sad But True The Unforgiven

Well a perfect metal pop album if there ever was one - and it’s still hard as nails when it wants to be. I mean yes overplayed to death and yes many a cliche but to put yourself back in 1991 and hearing this for the first time - whoa. Not only that - it’s persistently being present over 30 years on… essentially this is the Beatles of heavy guitars. Not to mentioned well paced and doesn’t over stay its welcome. A classic for sure even if I’m jaded to most of it.

Amazing. I’ve loved this album for a long time, but haven’t listened back to back in a while.

One of the best metal albums OAT

very funny album. very hard my favorite song was nothing else matters

Metallica will never not be a 5/5 for me. Just seeing this album pop up today put a smile on my face.

Respect! Love it. Lyrics - absolutelly masterpiece. Classic. Nihilistic Through the Never, social criticism in Holier Than Thou, understanding for human destiny in Nothing Else Matters, struggle with faith - The God That Failed etc... Yes, Metallica changed the sound a little, but lyrics were questions from eternity. Five star.

Rounded up a 4.5. Not my favourite of theirs from the first five but the production brings it up and the remaining four are four of the best metal albums of all time.

Good album, one of the few that i actually enjoyed listening to

9/10 Metallica at their best but it’s not the thrash Metallica that I fell in love with growing up :)

Man this is way better than I thought. I made fun of it a lot but it really solid.

Brilliant! It's such a great album. I can't count the number of times I've jammed to this.

Amazing front to back! Was hoping for a new album that I never listened to but I'm always happy to rock with Metallica.

I don't normally like this kind of self-aggrandizing American Metal but this the best example of the aforementioned. I respect the band and the trials they have gone though.. I enjoyed this.

Foundational album in my life

Classic. Especially the Unforgiven is 100

Forgot just how many good songs were on this album.

There are two albums in the discography of Metallica which will always get a lot of flak: This one here, also known as The Black Album, and the later released 'St. Anger'. Both albums are pretty good in their own right though. This one here gets flak because people who have usually no clue of metal or even hard rock know some of Metallica's singles and think they are cool enough. It's the surface of an iceberg. But that can still be magnificent enough, can't it? 'Enter Sandman', 'Don't Tread on Me' or, yes, even 'Nothing Else Matters' are all great songs. It's certainly a worthwhile album to get more into this band.

Not much to say here. Admittedly, I grew up on this record and it was this band that got me into drumming. But there's not a duff track on this masterpiece. Favourite tracks: yes.

leider einfach richtig geil

I love Metallica - I was so excited to listen through this album and I thought this would be my first 5 star rating. It has some absolute bangers, but the full listen through wasn't quite as good as I expected and there are a few songs I'm just not that into. Still a solid 4 for me :) All time face Metallica track: Unforgiven EDIT: I saw Metallica live for their M72 tour and had to come back and fix this rating, this album has so much good stuff on it! Plus since rating this there are other albums I've rated 5 for just loving one song, so I felt like this was an INJUSTICE for all!!!

This album rocks

Familiar with the album. Not all the tracks are great but overall it's a monumental album. Love how the black cover is done unironically due to Spinal Tap spoofing it.

Staple in the hard rock genera

i know the album very well, listened to it when i was younger

Really impressed! The opening and the first half of the album are just perfect. "My friend of misery" seemed to work for this moment quite well. Maybe the most impressed I've been with an album so far on this list (only 10 or so)

As an above average Metallica fan, nothing like some of my friends (I'm talking about you), I find this album a good remembrance to what they once were, a hard hitting, down to earth band, without many innovations and unnecessary elements in their songs. Enter sandman I can't stand to hear it anymore, but it is one of, if not the most well known song that Metallica has, very catchy tunes and lyrics Sad but true very hard song, hits you in the face and you're happy about it Holier then thou took longer than I liked to actually begin giving you something but nonetheless good song Wherever I may roam, very good feeling intro solos, the instruments alone are very relaxing and start preparing you for what's to come Don't tread on me, not my style, can't tell you why actually Same for trough the never, maybe these songs are a little repetitive for my taste The others songs I hadn't heard in a long time, was good to reminisce and the nostalgia was good, but unfortunately time didn't do well for these songs If I was comparing Metallica albums it would be a 4, not my favorite, but in the bigger context it's a 5 when compared to the whole scope of music.

3. The Unforgiven: Essa arrepia foda. 5. 6. Don't Tread On Me já é uma das um pouco mais underground, mas eu adoro o refrão dela. 7. Coisa linda. 9. Of Wolf And Man: FAZ O LOBINHUUUUUUUU AÚÚÚÚÚUUUU. 10. The God That Failed tem uma história interessante. Aí ela obviamente morreu e daí veio That God That Failed. 11. My Friend Of Misery: Destaque pra melodia foda de baixo na intro que volta ao longo da música algumas vezes. 12.

I dug this album and concert!

Wow, I had no idea this came directly after ...And Justice For All. It's so drastically different from the thrash metal of their previous albums, so I always figured there was more of a transition period into the sound of The Black Album. I don't know if I'll rank this one above the previous album, since I'm a sucker for thrash, but either way, this is a good album! It certainly feels like a more radio-friendly rock sound, and as a result, it's not as heavy and it certainly feels a bit cheesier than their previous works, but I don't mind that at all. It still rocks either way, and its popularity and acclaim makes it one of the most important albums in heavy metal. Favourite: Enter Sandman

Very large difference between songs, with a good balance across ( having some breathing songs in between)

Classic from my ten age years. First half of the album is brilliant, fades in the second half a bit.

Great Album

Although fans of their earlier thrash work continue to call it a sellout, Metallica's "black album" was, and continues to be, their best work. It's the album that moved them out of the realm of the isolated long-hairs and launched them into being, for a time, the biggest band in the world. And the reality is - the album is that good. Not a weak song on the album, they all hold up over the decades that have passed. A masterpiece that deserves 5 star plaudits.

The original metal album and certainly the one you would give to a new listener to genre.

Metallica

Beginning of the end of the Metallica that I love but this album is still a banger.

THE gateway metal album

Eindelijk weer zware metalen.

A bit biased with my mood but so many hits. The Unforgiven is a huge nostalgia hit for me. Nice to listen to a few songs I'm less familiar with. 🤟🔥 5/5

Some good old classic with energy and lots of feeling

Classic.

One of my favorite albums of all time!

10/5/23: start of the journey. I have listened to this album before; for someone who isn’t a big metalhead this is a very solid album. A lot of memorable songs and heavy riffs and would keep in the collection.

Amazing album!

Landmark LP that launched the band into the highest echelons of rock superstardom. This is definitely the crossover from heavy metal to hard rock that frustrated fans, who considered themselves die-hard, but opened the band to an audience much wider and deeper than ever. This album includes multiple signature songs that may be the only Metallica tunes many people have ever heard, but they have heard them. Adding to the album itself, the documentary that accompanied its making makes this an all-time lock for five stars.

I remember ripping the packaging off this cassette in summer of 1991 driving home, and reveling in the perfection. Enter Sandman had already played on MTV but it was the first time I heard Sad But True and all the other tracks. Still my favorite band. Metallica - the best of all time.

Love, Love, Love it.

Top album from the goat metal band

Most incredible album

This is the one album that both my wife and I turn up the volume. It very commercial, but well produced. This is one album that I can still listen to over and over. I just connect.

Love this album, music of my childhood

Can see why this is one of the top albums of all time. Classic Metallica. Some all time bangers on here. This album still gets a lot of play.

goated album nuff said

Nostalgia kicks in hard with Metallica so I can not do anything else but give this a 5 star rating

They're last great album, as long as you can get past Lars' neanderthal drumming (c'mon, Lars, just a little nuisance nuance or subtlety in your playing, maybe? Guess not. But that's okay, you do you.) Compared to previous albums, not all of the songs are as distinct among the tracks they're sharing vinyl with. Nevertheless, still a strong set.

Fuck yeah. This album fucking rips. Not perfect songwriting from end to end, but instruments and vocals are perfect in every case. Definitely some new ones in here, good album listen.

It's not very typical of this book to select a band's sleekest / most commercially successful albums, but they did in this case. This is metal at its commercial peak, and one my teenager self's favorites. Listening to it now, some tracks are a bit cheesy, but... five stars will do.

Sooo good

Even though its not thrash metal its still a 5 out 5 for me.

It's so good.

Great album

Polished to a chrome.

Black album is legendary

This site knew Friday is deadlift day, and Metallica did not disappoint. Even the slower songs have so much energy I felt like I could (and probably should) run through a wall.

From Nirvana to Pearl Jam to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, a number of late 20th century rock bands hit their strides in 1991, but perhaps no band hit their stride more gracefully than Metallica did. After the successful trio of Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and Justice between 1984 and 1988, the band blew expectations out of the water with this tour de force to open the nineties. Take the album’s opening track and you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s the band’s Mona Lisa, with a hummable chorus and a mysterious hue. But dig deeper and you start to see that it’s actually their Sistine Chapel. Aside from the obvious religious theme, the electric opening and structural diversity puts “Enter Sandman” at the top of its genre. If only I could’ve seen Mariano Rivera ascend the mound at Yankee Stadium to this masterpiece. From the schizophrenic “Sad But True” to the patriotic “Don’t Tread on Me” to the intergalactic “Through the Never,” the band continues to communicate a wide range of emotions and themes throughout the record. It’s funny how we associate music with memories or places without even meaning to. I had never actually heard “Wherever I May Roam” until it popped up on my shuffle the other day at EoS, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I forever associate the song with lat pull-downs. If that keeps my rotator cuffs intact, I’ll take it. With “The Unforgiven” the band proves they can play at a slower pace than their usual gasoline-drinking style, further revealing the intensity of the other tracks. “Nothing Else Matters” continues this trend, and through lyrics like “I’ve never opened myself up this way,” they recognize they’d broken into a plane of existence metal had never seen before. Or, to put it in their words, the Earth had become their throne.

5 stars for Nothing Else Matters on its own.

I pretty much grew up with this album, as familiar as my own skin. Love it more with every listen. Nothing Else Matters is a perfect rock ballad. Just a perfect LP.

Released just weeks before Ten and Nevermind, Metallica’s self-titled could be seen as the final gasp of the 80’s. Thrash metal at its most radio friendly, and yet it never feels like a sell out move. If the awful 80’s mainstream rock movement was needed to build up to this album, then it was all worth it.

All time classic bruur wat een stem.

Classic. 5/5

A classic

a huevo! Amo!

Well I have my own reasons for disliking the band, it's hard to deny that this album very much shaped the way that metal would be created in the early 2000s. This is especially true when you look at bands like Avenged Sevenfold

Gatekeeping metal is a virtue as old as time, and discussions of Metallica selling out already began with 'Fade To Black' from Ride the Lightning. In any case, Metallica definitely did not sell out with The Black Album. Instead they smashed through all fictional doors in the music industry, and every single metal act in the last 30 years owe them for this achievement. And yes, perhaps we could agree to a 10 year break on playing 'Enter Sandman' and 'Nothing Else Matters' - who knows, perhaps even they can become listenable again at some point?

Metallica might just be the quintessential “12-years-old-and-discovering-metal”-album. It’s been a while since I heard it. It’s still heavy, it’s dense, it’s filled to the brim with classics. It’s Metallica quitting their faster, thrashier and more complex sides in order to finally emerge as the biggest metal band ever. And overplayed, as some songs on this album are, this is a landmark album.

YES. This album gets me so pumped!! I didn’t even realize how many bangers were on this album!! Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: for sure Favourite Song: Wherever I May Roam

An hour and two minutes of perfection.

Ah memories

My first time playing through a Metallica album. Man this album goes hard. Felt so raw grungy and powerful. Love the use of eastern spounds, and even some cowboy sounding sounds on some tracks. I'm a fan now.

I love this album so much. It’s so good. The front end is so stacked.Enter Sandman.Sad but true. The unforgiven.Holier than thou.Wherever I may roam.Nothing else matters. All some of the greatest metal songs ever written in my opinion.Sure the Album Starts to slow down at the end After of Wolf and man but it’s still better than almost 99% of albums. No wonder it sold so well.Kirk Hammet’s Solos are Great the Riffs are great Lars’ drumming is tight it’s all so cohesive.

Haven't listened to this for years and I was expecting to be all snooty that it's their sellout album etc etc but this just slams.

It was an amazing experience it was very amazing. I was amazed at how it sounded and was very intricate.

Brutal guitar riffs and big booming vocals. Just an absolute fucking genre definer.

My brother had shit taste in music most of the time. But he owned this cassette and played it a lot in his Jeep. Which was super cool. And while it's not my favorite metal album, it was one of my first. And the riffs are still have melting.

Truly a masterpiece!

Not sure if this is really metal since Metallica had evolved so much by this point. But it’s heavy and melodic and I have time for it when it comes up in my suggestions.

According to my records, it's 13 years since I last listened to this all the way through. Let's go! #32 all time artist listens

Last good album

A masterpiece. Probably their best album (although my brother in law disagrees) and definitely their most successful. Pretty much every track is a classic, but even the lesser heard songs kick ass.

Faktisk gode greier

5/5 I didn't expect to *LOVE* this album. Of course, I had heard the hits and loved them. I had never sat down and listened to the whole things front to back. It has levels, moods, and it's a vibe. The melodies are actually really beautiful and I don't think they cursed a single time (in this album) but yet they are badass and hard. James Hetfield voice goes from nice to gritty and screamy showing range and, (or Kirk Hammett) and Jason Newsted shred in a way that isn't too widely and self absorbed. Was surprised to find out that it was from 1991. For some reason, I thought it was much older and withstood the test of time. I think it has so far and will.

I was one of those “Black Album converts”, and to this day this album remains for me a benchmark for heavy metal. Such a huge sound, so many awesome riffs, actual melodies with intelligible (and mostly tolerable) lyrics, and most importantly for this genre - makes me move! There are a couple of tracks that I sometimes skip over if I’m not in the mood, so 4.5 stars, but this time I’m rounding up.

Outstanding album, start to finish. Love Metallica

fantastic nostaglia

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-james hetfield

Metallica!!

First of all I would like to write that I've listened to this album many times and have it on vinyl. The black album is what got me hooked on Metallica even though it's an album that divided the fan base as it's more "mainstream" than their previous albums. I do think it's a great album even though Ride the Lightning is my favorite Metallica album. Overall it got great songs on it from start to end. Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, The Unforgiven and Wherever I May Roam are classic Metallica songs that most people probably heard before. Even though it's not as thrashy as their earlier works it's still very heavy and Metallica keeps the furiosity going. Every band member truly delivers an outstanding performance. Metallica's quality dipped after the black album and it wasn't until they released Death Magnetic they reached the same level. Death Magnetic unfortunately suffered from bad mixing but is otherwise a great album.

Love every bit. All the hits and then some. This will up my hard rock points.

The album that started it all for Metallica, great album.

Almost perfect metal album, but still doesn't get to RTL, MOP, or Justice in terms of perfection. Production is still one of the greatest in metal, fantastic riffs, groove, and lyrics. Some songs are just an okay which prevents it from being perfect, but they don't feel skippable or boring at all. 9/10

While not as good as the albums that came before it, every song on here is a banger.

It's a classic.

Man, what an opener to The Black Album! "Sleep with one eye open, grippin' your pillow tight!" The riffs are super fast and extremely sharp. The sounds is a little slower than early speed metal Metallica. It is more intentional. The second song, Sad But True, is just a slow, hard rock march. Even my little Rae was head banging to that one. There are so many jams on this album: Anywhere I Roam, Through The Never, Nothing Else Matters. A great hard rock album.

There's a reason it's a classic

A classic that I over-listened to as a child. 5/5

Klassieker. Begint sterk, eindigt wat minder. Toch 5*

Iconic album with plenty of bangers. I’m not a metal or a rock fan but this is a really accessible album and a lot of fun. Tracks I liked: Sad But True Wherever I May Roam Nothing Else Matters The Unforgiven

love the album

You’ve got to be kidding me. I said we are in the 5 star Renaissance and that streak continues today. Part of me wonders if this is one of the most popular albums of all time because I feel like most people are familiar with the first song, Enter Sandman, to some degree or another. This was the first Metallica song I ever heard. I was at my friend Zack's house and he took me into his older brother’s room who had a bunch of metal albums and said "you've got to listen to this" and we did. And it was awesome. He introduced me to most of the OG metal I listened to. When I heard it, it changed my life. It is just such a cool song, and we didn't even listen to the rest of the album! It wasn't until years later that Stevie and I rediscovered this album during high school. It was then that this album took on even more meaning as we used it to pump ourselves up for FBLA competitions, specifically The Struggle Within. There is something special about the most meaningful songs being the first and the last. But then came Guitar Hero Metallica and suddenly all the songs on this album hit. The sheer variety of guitar riffs and deep drums from Wherever I May Roam, Sad But True, Of Wolf and Man, to much quieter songs like The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters. This is my second favorite Metallica album after ...And Justice for All. I'd venture to guess they self titled this one because after the last four albums, they finally figured out who they were. I'd argue they knew who they were by the second album but when you add in the progression of their sound and lyrics, this feels like the peak. And many would argue this was their peak. Regardless, this is another masterpiece on our hands. Favorite Tracks: Enter Sandman, Sad But True, Holier Than Thou, The Unforgiven, Wherever I May Roam, Through The Never, Nothing Else Matters, Of Wolf and Man, The Struggle Within. Album Cover: The don't tread on me snake set against pure black. Metal.

Wow, this list decided to heat up lately. This album makes two five stars in a row. Maybe our third from Metallica so far, and it's definitely one of my favorites. So many classic tracks on here, and I include a number of deeper cuts in that category because we played these songs a lot in college. The only ones I know for sure are big are "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters," maybe "Sad But True" as well? The depth beyond those tracks is impressive too though. "Nothing Else Matters" is interesting because it slows down the pace significantly, and it features vocals that sound so different that I assumed it wasn't even James Hetfield. Crazy impressive. A tribute album was made recently with tons of artists doing covers of the tracks on here, and my favorite on that album was Miley Cyrus' cover of "Nothing Else Matters." She killed it, rivaling the original. This album bangs though, maybe the best Metallica album if you ask me. Favorite tracks: Enter Sandman, Sad But True, Holier Than Thou, The Unforgiven, Wherever I May Roam, Nothing Else Matters, Of Wolf and Man, My Friend of Misery, The Struggle Within. Album art: It looks better when you turn up the contrast and can see the logo in the top left and snake in the bottom right. This one's always referred to as the black album since those things aren't normally visible, and honestly until today I thought it was actually called the Black Album. 5/5

What I've felt, what I've known Never shined through in what I've shown Never be, never see Won't see what might have been What I've felt, what I've known Never shined through in what I've shown Never free, never me So I dub thee unforgiven I agree that this should be on a list of albums that everyone should hear at least once. Its an outstanding representation of metal, and the albums theme and tracks are perfect. 5/5

This isn't one of my favorite genres but it's hard to not give this a 5. Every song is great and memorable. I prefer this over Metallica's earlier thrash sound. Towards the end of the album the sound can get a little tiring but I think it's still deserving. There's a lot of albums on here that have a pretty consistent sound throughout but are still amazing.

Awesome album, more commercial than their earlier work but still a great listen!

The definition of all killer no filler. Super crisp production, insane riffs. And surprisingly melodic choruses. Was never big into Metallica before but this is gonna change that.

15 year old me loved this. 35 year old me loves this just as much.

Heard this whole album a million times. All-time classic!

Their most controversial album but it doesnt really put a foot wrong

I'm not really a Metallica fan but this album has Enter Sandman, Sad but True, Unforgiven, Wherever I May Roam, Nothing Else Matters... that's 5 stars plus the other tracks weren't bad either.

A classic.

This was the album that changed everything for me. I thought I liked music, but was limited to what was being played on pop radio. I was 13 when Enter Sandman came out. It showed me that there was a lot more out there. It showed me that heavy metal was accessible and within weeks I was exploring the “real” stuff. It paved the way for me to appreciate grunge immediately when Nirvana and Soundgarden got big. When I think of when I became a real fan of music and started to discover what I truly liked, this album was the start of it. This album has taken a lot of flack for Metallica’s change in sound, selling out, etc. I see where those criticisms come from. But to my young ears, none of that mattered at the time and they were the fist band to truly blow my mind. I don’t listen to this much anymore but enjoy taking the journey back when I do.

I think this album transitioned rock from the 80s hair-metal to the 90s hard and alt rock. Such an iconic sound.

Awesome

Five stars for the outro on My Friend If Misery, what a fricken heater.

Great!!

You don't have to love metal to know that this is a perfect album.

"Enter sandman" è probabilmente la migliore prima canzone di un album di sempre. Wow, me lo ricordavo molto bello e avevo ragione. "The Unforgiven" è un altro capolavoro. "Nothing else matters" va beh, cosa lo dico a fare. L'unico suo difetto è la lunghezza. 5 stelle con riserva.

It’s hard to fathom that this album and Nevermind came out the same year. We got Enter Sandman and Smells Like Teen Spirit in the same go-around the sun. If you listen to them both, the hard rock elements are front and centre but the subtle differences signal the monumental shift from the excess of the 80s to the angst of the 90s. I can’t imagine my youth without either.

I wondered when we'd get to something amazing - and here it is. Literally one of the best rock and metal albums ever written, the perfect mix of heavy and commercial. Anybody who says otherwise either can't get over the fact that it's metal or can't get over the fact it's not Master of Puppets/Lightning. There's a reason why songs on this album have nearly a billion listens. Well done Metallica for such a gem...

Probably a 4.5. Listened to Metallica growing up, still like their music.

Omraženi klasik

T3B 1. Enter Sandman 2. Nothing Else Matters 3. Wherever I May Roam Simply one of the best metal albums. Easy 5!

So sick.

Absolutely classic album that was my introduction to Metallica back when it came out, so I grew up with it, and it's nice to revisit it today. The album contains 12 tracks, five of which are outstanding, with the remaining seven raging from "OKish" to "actually quite nice". Clearly, I am biased, but in my book, any album that can muster tracks like Enter Sandman, Sad But True, The Unforgiven, Wherever I May Roam and Nothing Else Matters deserves a high rating. I'll substract 0.5 points for the somewhat weaker tracks, but that still leaves us with an absolute iconic monster of an album. And no, I don't care if this isn't really Thrash Metal or whatever subgenre people come up with. That's just gatekeeping. 4.5/5

So, honestly, this is like THE album to intro people to METAL with. It's aggressive but coherent, clear and polished. Metallica's last GREAT album.

One the best produced metal albums ever.

Fantastic album, all bangers no misses

Absolute banger

¡VINILAZO!

Hell yeah - these songs sound massive! I love the energy and drama of this album. Ridiculous guitar solos too! I had this on in the background so I wasn’t paying close enough attention to have favorite tracks yet but I enjoyed the ride. Looking forward to diving deeper.

I LOVED this album when I was introduced to it (around age 12 or 13 maybe?) as it was a change for Metallica going from the thrash raw metal to a more polished catchy heavy metal sound. (For the record, I love thrash Metallica and post-thrash Metallica completely equally, but the change was refreshing) "Enter Sandman" is one of the best metal songs ever. Probably a top 5 track that people think of when they think of "heavy metal". The lead guitar is an evolution for Kirk Hammett, where he introduces a super wah-wah heavy and pentatonic guided shredfest that matches this change in Metallica's sound away from the blistering thrashy solos that came before and into a more melody driven one. "Nothing Else Matters" is another incredible track. While Metallica has a very ~serious~ sort of sound, this one comes across as even more serious, and a bit sullen. It's so dynamic in the guitar playing and composition and really captures this period of Metallica well- with these huge, epic pieces that still somehow retain catchy repeatable melodies. It's a masterpiece in how to write good metal music. The one downside of this album is that it isn't jam packed with bangers, and a few of the tracks are a little forgettable. Still a 5/5 for me though.

love this one

Incredible metal album!

Not much convincing needed. Metallica makes me wish I owned over the ear headphones. The guitar is beautiful - so eerie/sad/descriptive. Vocals are undeniably on point. Also, did they coin #sadbuttrue ??? THE UNFORGIVEN is an INSANELY good song! Hon mention to nothing really matters. Only neg is it's not my favourite Metallica album, perhaps more of them will appear?

Classic. Too many good songs to name.

Eh now we are talking! 6 out of 5 stars because this album contains so many eternal melodies!

classic

While many insist this album was when Metallica "sold out," few will point out that they were sellouts from the start. Keep in mind they changed the name of their debut album from the daring, bold, somewhat profound "Metal Up Your Ass" to the downright wimpy "Kill 'Em All". Corporate hacks!

One the best albums recorded

God this album is so consistently good. 5/5 no notes.

Masterpiece.

Amazing. Takes me back.

A bit of a step back in time to my teenage years. Very enjoyable.

melhor album dos caras

Really liked this. Knew a few of the tracks from covers but never knew they were Metallica. Good stuff.

I love Metallica

Well- what can be said. This is the Black Album

Banger

Absolutely

I have heard most of these and they are all fantastic even the ones I hadn't heard

All so good, probably like some of the less popular ones most too

No comments - it's a legendary album.

One of my favourite albums in my youth. Up there with the best metal albums and helped inspire more mainstream metal.

Confirmou o meu ingresso no mundo do metal.

Is there a single bad song on this album? I say NAY!

Dispensa comentários. Maravilhoso!

Glorious

This marks the end of my Metallica journey in relation to this list. With S&M still reasonably fresh in my memory a lot of my favourites from this album are from that album. Etither way this is an incredible album

Mijn favorieten: "Enter Sandman", "Sad But True", "The Unforgiven" and "Don't Tread On Me". *****

As a fan of hard rock music in general, this album is basically flawless. Enter Sandman is on the list of greatest album openers ever. What more can say beyond this is simply one of the all-time great albums?

One of the best rock albums of all time.

This is an excellent album with lots of great songs from start to finish and goes hard AF. Excellent instrumentals. 9/10.

Perhaps the most consequential album in the metal genre in the past thirty years and for Metallica. While not every song hits the mark, for the most part it is a solid, neverending barrage of peak Metallica; the everlasting hour in which the band took the reins and dominated the landscape for all eternity. As always, an essential listen. Favorites: Enter Sandman, Holier Than Thou, The Unforgiven, Wherever I May Roam, Through the Never, Nothing Else Matters, Of Wolf and Man, My Friend of Misery.

I worshipped this album when I was a kid and still belt this album out whenever I hit play or when it rarely plays enter sandman on the radio.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Their 5th album. Heavy Metal not particularly my thing but this was excellent…

Wow, knew about this album most of my life but disregarded it as generic. Really loved the listen and how deep many of these songs meanings are. Dang, the instrumentals were killer also, mostly by the riffs and bass lines.

Legendary album that changed the history of metal forever. A lot of people don't like it because that's when Metallica turned to mainstream, but you can't deny the huge importance and impact this record had (and still have!). I believe it should be a must-listen for everyone at least once in life. Favorite tracks: * Through The Never * Holier Than Thou * The God That Failed

Ktebt 6 Saf7at Fy Kteb El Bouheli Mte3 Dostoevsky

Amazing mix sonority!

Never has a crossover album felt so good. Thirty years later and it still hits home. An absolute joy to listen to. Life is hard and no one understands me.

Does what it says on the tin.

Almost forgot how Metallica was part of the 1991 music revolution. Whereas Soundgarden turned their metal into grunge, Metallica turned metal into something new - less frantic, more dense (the sound just fills your head). Like Sabbath set the standard for the 70's going forward, these guys set the standard for the 90's and beyond. This is a true masterclass. Still a ton of great guitarwork and pounding drums, but the melody attached to the intensity is amazing. After all these years I still say wow listening to it.

The hits are amazing, the rest of the album is really good. The biggest problem is NOT ENOUGH BASS. It's better than "...And Justice for All" which basically has no bass, but damn this album needs more bottom end. Even the bass drum is too treble-y. Is that a word? Favorite tracks - mostly the hits: Sad But True (extremely cool song then and now), Wherever I May Roam, Enter Sandman (so overplayed at Guitar Center), Nothing Else Matters (also overplayed at Guitar Center). I like The Unforgiven but it was sooo overplayed on MTV in the 90s. Favorite non-hits: Through the Never, The God That Failed. I'd call it a 4.5, but I'll round it to a 5.

Literally my childhood. Every. Song.

In words of James Hetfield, YEAAAAAH

Fantastic Album
