2nd best and last good one.

круто, класс. Лютый кал

Great album. Actually, this album used to be one of my favourites while growing up. I've seen them live 3 times and many of these songs were played. As for this album, there are several really great songs: "Enter Sandman", "Sad But True", "Nothing Else Matters", "The Unforgiven", "Wherever I May Roam" (probably my favourite), "Through The Never", "The God that Failed".. It's difficult to keep the excitement of my first (many) listens of this album, but this is still definitely good. At least 4 stars. Could be 5 stars (and it would definitely be if we skip a couple of tracks). Btw, my favourite album, "Kill'em All" is not part of this project, so I may give it a listen ;-)

Classic

Opinion: Perfection. Favorite songs: (1) Enter Sandman (2) Sad but true & Nothing else matters (3) Wherever I may roam Overall Album Rating (Pitchfork rating system): 9.5/10

Metallica by Metallica is a good album. I liked a lot of the album quite a bit, I think it may be another 5 star. The instrumental was heavy but nice and i like the lead singers voice. You know the album is going to be good when it starts with a song as strong as Enter Sandman. Top three: Enter Sandman, Sad But True, Nothing Else Matters

One of the best albums of all time!

Rode the lightning

How is every single song here good. Genuinely.

The album that pushed Metallica from a fringy thrash metal band to a metal band capable of mainstream radio. Even though the filler tracks aren't exceptional, the hits are such fucking classics that it pulls the whole thing into classic status.

Una maldita obra maestra

This is the first album where I felt that the 'got to listen to it before you die' part was 100% true. Enter sandman, sad but true, holier than thou, the unforgiven, then wherever I may roam. These are just the first five songs in succession. There are established bands whose greatest hits albums have fewer timeless classics than this. Peak.

Aucun mot n'est nécessaire.

I love this album. Such good memories. Great energy. The line, 'they say the empty can rattles the most.' always stuck with me. Classic

Staggering riffs, soaring vocals, gigantic drum hits- this is a stone-cold classic metal release. To imbue metal music with this much of a pop sound without losing what makes this band special, with this much care given to a diverse sound (from balladry, to chorus-driven bangers, to slow chuggers, to fast thrash tracks)- there is no denying the power of the Black Album. I love each and every song, and to show that, I'm going to "rank 'em all" here and give a little blurb about why each one works: 12. "The Struggle Within"- military drums at beginning firmly anchor this in the Persian Gulf-era 11. "Don't Tread On Me"- an infectious chorus 10. "Through the Never"- that riff at the end is an all-timer 9. "Enter Sandman"- a classic? yes. but there are even better tracks 8. "The God That Failed"- great bass work and lyrical content 7. "Wherever I May Roam"- sitar intro???? YES 6. "Holier Than Thou"- the pissed-off feeling/attitude permeating from this one has always stuck with me 5. "The Unforgiven"- have always been drawn to the excellent vocal perf on this and 1997's part II in the same series 4. "Sad But True"- it's just so badass- so deliberately dramatic with those drum entrances and insanely well-produced guitar solo work 3. "Of Wolf and Man"- Catchy but still heavy- this one has aged really well production-wise and essentially launched Avenged Sevenfold's entire sound 2. "My Friend of Misery"- that atmospheric section in the middle with the reverb-y guitar laid over the orchestra is just orgasmic 1. "Nothing Else Matters"- a haunting piece of legitimately epic songwriting like no other in the power ballad oeuvre

Alright, I'm going to leave this one short and sweet. Not too short, but shorter than my last Metallica review. Metallica is my all time favorite band. While this isn't my favorite Metallica album, it's still a 5, and I've been dying to roll it. I love when the bot blesses me with two 5 star albums in a row. Yesterday, I got freaking Abbey Road, and now I get the Black Album for my weekend enjoyment. This is the second Metallica album I have rolled for this project, following the also very much 5 star album, ...And Justice for All. Ironically, the black/grey snake with the black background is pretty comparable to Abbey Road, as they're both up there with some of the other all time best, most recognizable albums arts of all time. I'd get it on a shirt in a heartbeat. One thing I've started doing because of this project is listening to entire albums from start to finish instead of just the hits. Now, you might find that a pretty ridiculous thing to say, who doesn't listen to entire albums?? Then you realize we're living in an era where you can just do that very easily with things like YouTube and Spotify. I have nothing to base this on, but I'd say a majority of people listening to music these days aren't going to pop on an entire album if it's at their disposal, they'll stick to the hits. Exceptions are going to be made with new albums, of course, but the premise remains the same. That was a long way to go, but the point is that I am VERY familiar with this album top to bottom already. I've heard this whole god damn album 1000 times from start to finish, and it's all good. Picking a favorite when every song is this good is actually impossible. It would be easier just flipping a damn coin. Nobody shreds quite like Metallica, and no one ever will. The chords are immaculate on every single song, from the hardcore rockers, to the softer but still equally heavy hitters like "The Unforgiven". Of course I'm biased because I grew up with them, so I'm always going to judge them a bit differently, but the fact that I've been listening to this my entire life and I can still turn it on whenever to enjoy myself is emblematic of sheer perfection. Some days I want to jam out to "Enter Sandman", others I'll put on "Nothing Else Matters", but then I have to hear the entire album again. It's not possible for me to just put on 1. I've gotta play the whole album. Do you know how rare that is, even with the albums I've rated a 5?? It's pretty rare. So, I'm not going to pick a favorite for this one, because the whole damn album is already in my favorites. Metallica forever. I think that's good enough for now, until the next one that I give a 5. Man, I'd hate to be whatever album follows this one on my list. I guess we'll find out when I vote here in a second. Will we get the fabled three 5's in a row?? It could happen, you never know.

I'm stunned by the number of non-5 star reviews this gets. But then again, it's their first "transition" album, moving from Cliff's pounding bass, to 90s alternative soaked Load. There are two people that don't give this 5 stars: non-metallica fans, and the purity testers of Metallica's original fan base. Stop the virtue signally, and embrace their best work.

Yessss, finally a metal album!!! Love Metallica

Not that into metal but I can see why this album is legendary

My Balls exploded

I'm very conflicted on this album. On one hand this album does have some of their best songs and some absolute bangers, but on the other hand, they kinda sold out and I'm at a point in my life I don't really care much about Metallica anymore. Metallica are a great gateway band to get into metal, but once you're in, you don't really come back to them much. That being said, this is a great album. I think I would give it a 4.5 if I could, because it does go on a tad too long, and the 2nd half has a couple of songs I just don't care about. Low 5.

I don't own any Metallica albums, nor have I ever listened to a Metallica album in full before today, but I have all but two of this album's tracks in my music collection, so I know it well, and really like almost all of them. I think they got some flack when this album came out about it being less thrashy and hardcore than their previous work, but I really love the melodies and harmonies (quote of "America" from West Side Story!") of this album. I listened to it twice. Five stars.

I’ve been looking forward to getting this one! Easily Metallica’s best album, it’s angry, punchy, and deep. Each track sounds similar enough to belong with the others, yet each one is unique and memorable in its own way. I love the strong guitar melodies that just run continuously throughout this album, that’s one of my favorite features in metal. One of my easiest 5s yet

First album I ever owned. Still holds up all these years later as one of the best ever.

One of the best metal albums of all time. Every song is a belter. Top production too.

Not a big metalica guy, but this album bangs.

2026.05.08.

Biased rating because this was the album that introduced me to heavy metal. And it will forever be special to me for that reason.

A soundtrack to my teenage years. Thank you for making me listen to this from start to finish. It has been a while and sound like just where I left it off 10/10

I've always loved Metallica, but somehow never listened to this album in full. And WOW- every song from Enter Sandman to The Struggle Within (the whole album) is an absolute banger! I can understand where some people come from that Metallica was appealing to the mainstream, but why would a true fan of the band dislike it if their music that they make a living on suddenly becomes popular? 5/5

I was somewhat divorced from heavy music in the 1980s so I missed all the thrash bands and this was probably the first Metallica album I ever heard. Even then, with the exception of "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters", I didn't properly listen to this until the turn of the century. It is good. The production is excellent and it is commercial without sacrificing power. There are a lot of excellent songs on here with only a slight dip in quality around the middle. I'm never going to be a Metallica fan, and when I listen to them it will probably be Master of Puppets, but this stands up.

yes yes me like metallica me want more like this very soon

This album does not disappoint. Metallica is to metal what e-bikes are to cycling: accessible, a little controversial among the faithful, and honestly kind of perfect for what they are. A muted gateway into the darkness if you will. The purists can have their opinions. Everyone just wants to feel the wind.

Expectation: -> My #1 album of all time. First CD I ever owned. I bought a boom box and my friend's Black CD was in there. He said I could have it. The rest is history. After listening: -> All twelve of these songs are in my top-10. All jokes aside, this listen created more separation as my #1. This is a metal, no, a musical masterpiece Track ranking: Nothing Unforgiven Never Sandman Roam Struggle Holier Sad Tread Misery Wolf God

Love Metallica, love this album, perfect 6 stars. I always get albums mixed up because i almost never just listen to an album, but i didn't realize how many of their big songs was on this one. I also thought Enter Sandman was more recent (like mid to late 90s).

This was my high school lifting album after I quit wrestling

Whether you are a fan or not (I'm not) you can't deny the impact this album had in 1991 and its legacy in rock. The listener counts are off the charts from top to bottom. "Enter Sandman" (2B) is the cornerstone track. I even remember the day I first heard that track and where I was, it was a "holy shit moment" and I realized they graduated from one trick pony. Throw in now-classics like "Sad But True" (520M), "The Unforgiven" (715M, never repeated the greatness of this song), "Wherever I May Roam" (320M) & "Nothing Else Matters (1.6B) and you have a really solid album. I'm a fan of this album, but not of anything before or after. This was their pinnacle and their opus of goodness. Even my non-rocker wife appreciates a few of these tracks. Deserves a spot in the Top 1001 for sure. 4.5 stars. I'll round up out of respect for the tracks mentioned above.

An album that pushed heavy metal into the mainstream. Not for the first time. Not for the last time. It it made it appealing to a whole new audience and it still stands up. Not their heaviest or fastest but damn good.

A perfect heavy metal classic.

This kicks so much ass, makes me want to get an airbrushed van with wizards on the side, shag carpet on the inside, and sell drugs to teenagers at the mall while playing the wildest VTM larps possible. Enter the Sandman alone would make it a classic, but everything together, the guitar, the drums, the vocals, an absolutely iconic album which deserves its history. Even though this listen wasn't the most involved, it was amazing.

Metallica’s influence on music I don’t think can be overstated, they brought metal to a wider audience and those who were curious found other sub genres of metal to get into. Listening to this album again now, it’s still pretty fucking awesome

Just so cool

Masterpiece.

Love the music, love the album. Listened to AC/DC afterwards

A lot of the lower energy hits stocked in the black album (apart from "Enter Sandman"). I gotta rate this one a five. It's no "Kill 'em All," but too many amazing tracks for me to ignore.

Metallica makes me want to open a beer with my seatbelt buckle, hell ya brother

288/1001 Metallica - s/t Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ Maybe not their best album, but the one that introduced me to the band. Always going to have a soft spot for this.

probably my 2nd favourite metallica album (hopefully we get kill em all later!).

'Enter Sandman' is a hell of a way to start an album. Metallica represents and interesting band for fans of heavy music. They dragged thrash metal into the mainstream consciousness and also moderated their sound -- less speed and aggression -- during their experience of mainstreaming. That's a subject about which fans have debated (which came first? did they sell out?) for a long time. James Hetfield is a unique vocalist (almost comically gritty, incredibly ripe for parody and still unfailingly melodic), a fairly singular lyricist (dark but accessible, scary but you can peek through your fingers, menacing but not particularly violent by the genre's standards) and an incredible writer of guitar riffs. Jason Newsted is an excellent bass player ('Sad But True' owes a lot to him) and Kirk Hammet is one of the first big guitar heroes of my generation. Lars Ulrich is a serviceable drummer (and the other half of the usual songwriting team with Hetfield) though not as technically spectacular as many thrash drummers. He thunders and stays on time though, and that's enough for Metallica -- he'd be the Ringo of metal music except that he's been caught live slipping up (Ringo is steady as hell). That this broke through in 1991 is nigh miraculous. The highlights of the album are numerous -- 'Enter Sandman', 'Sad But True', 'The Unforgiven', 'Nothing Else Matters'. And the secondary songs are generally tops, too -- 'Holier Than Thou' has a proper thrash opening and really does remind you that they're not just a band trying to get to the next ballad. This is how the 90's started. A lot of the pop-metal that followed towards the end of the decade couldn't keep up with this but their fingerprints are there on heavy music for more than a decade. The album version of 'Unforgiven' really reminds me of why I didn't like the S&M version all that much. There are such beautiful, heavy overtones going on during the verses, matching the vocal melody. Hammet's guitar absolutely screams but the record mixing keeps it in the background (one of the poppier touches that makes them a bit more mainstream-accessible). This is a template (though is absolutely not a whole cloth invention; it goes back to Irish trad music and the Blues, at the absolute least) for how to do melodic metal and when you're aware of it, you'll see it more and more. Anyway, this rocks. Like eating a whole bag of spicy Doritos. Your ears will ring at the end but you'll have a big smile on your face. If you're not sure about heavy music, this isn't a bad starting place, either. 5/5

best metallica album for sure… grew up on this hard to hate

This is probably their best album. It’s both heavy and melodic and super catchy.

Unbelivable that they can have so many classic albums. Each one I listen to I think THIS one is their best. Maybe they just have three albums tied for their best album. Love this album. 5/5

\m/ (>.<) \m/ Some albums are pure perfection.

Enter Sandman gets a lot of flack because of its popularity, bit it's popular because it's so great! That riff is perfection. This album is excellent start to finish. It was my introduction to Metallica, and I'm a lifelong fan as a result. I may be an outlier, but I think this album and the two that followed are peak Metallica.

music is love

Es ist halt. Metallica von Metallica

I first heard Enter Sandman blasting from a record store on the Main Street in Ushuaia Argentina in the fall (spring there) of 1991. I was obsessed and bought the cassette without a way to listen to it. It would wait until I came back home in fall of 1993 where this album remained on constant repeat for several years. This is not their best album - I still prefer Master of Puppets and And Justice for All. In this regard I feel to score this a 4 to leave room for those albums. That said, as I’m sitting in traffic with Don’t Tread on Me blasting, there is no denying this album puts me in a better mood. 5/5

very instrumental in all intros. heavy metal thrash w electric guitar shreddings . timestamp: 3:41- wherever I may roam, very great guitar solo. similar to last album "moving pictures" only difference is that its more heavy.

Absolute classic. Better than I remembered.

If you would have asked me 10 years ago what my favorite album of all time was, it would have been this album. For almost 5 years in a row, this album was my most listened to album on my Spotify Wrapped. I can play every song on this album on guitar, I know every lyric, I can air-drum every beat. Every song is so cool and has so much musical swagger. Say what you will about the band members of Metallica. I agree with you. They are stuck up, rude, self-righteous assholes who value their profit more than their music. But despite that, this album is timeless. It's the soundtrack of every pubescent man feeling a surge of testosterone when he shoulder checks his high school rival, every gym-bro has played this album in their earbuds at least once when they've gone for a PR, every football player has done drills to one of these songs playing on the speakers. It's just a damn good metal album. This album is important for one reason: It made Metallica mainstream. Before this album, Metallica was generally viewed as something the guys smoking cigarettes in the back of the bus listened to. This album made them famous with "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters" slowing their jam from thrash to rockabilly and undeniably appealing to billions of people. The topics on this album range from singing about a dream eating demon, to fighting your inner demon, to fighting other people's demons, to werewolves, to rattlesnakes, to being homeless, to travelling to the darkest parts of your mind, to loving someone so close to your heart, to fighting the world for that person. It's metal as fuck and also strangely introspective. This album absolutely deserves its spot on this 1001 Albums to listen to before you die. Personally, it's a 10/10. Thanks to my friend in middle school for being such a shit influence and getting me hooked to this kind of music. And to my dad for playing this at an uncomfortably loud volume while we drove to and from the running track.

Absolutely love this album! Great songs from start to finish. Game changing album for Metallica, they redefined heavy metal with this album.

INCREIBLEEEEEEEEE...

I love listening to music called "Holier Than Thou" on the day of the year when Catholics yell at you for eating meat and/or more than 300 calories, and scream at you that Jesus died today because you're a sinner Sorry can you tell I have religious trauma

Not thier best but still a really solid album. Introduced Metallica and metal to the general audiences in the 90s. Some songs are a bit sellouty but most are really good.

Un album que hace de buen compañero, ya sea de mates o en la oficina. No es un sonido muy violento, te mantiene en disfrute de principio a fin. Me encanta

Tope de gamuza

My first big concert was seeing Metallic on this albums tour. Great album 4.5 stars

awesome

forgot that when I was a kid I used to think enter sandman said “egggg salaaaddddd” instead of “ exitttt lighhhttttt” ( dad laughed his ass off when I told him) // banger get ready dance party to this this morning // also miss listening to this in the car with dad as a kid// also watching them play in concert was amazing! // oh how i adore Nothing Else Matters… adding to 20 rn!

So good.

Me encanta este álbum. Tiene canciones muy buenas y con todo el power que tenía Metallica desde un principio.

amazing album

no one can destroy the metal

A great album, a real highlight in the Metallica catalogue. Hardly any weak songs, nothing else matters.

Listened to the remastered vinyl edition which gives a bit more low end. A masterpiece. I don’t think there’s a bad song on the album. Very catchy and accessible metal.

Amaze amaze amaze

One of their best albums

Have never been particularly enthralled by Metallica in the past, but I really did enjoy this album. I flipped a coin between 4 and 5, and it got lucky.

2 of my favorites songs are in this album.

One of the best in metal

Metallica at their best. Glad I finally listened to more than just the hits.

Awesome. Sad but true!

One of the best 5

The one that make Metallica Main stream, very powerful and easy, catch sound. They are beyond heaven and hello, but their Best records are those before this.

It's Talica, it's my childhood, it's most iconic album ever

True metal classic

Life changing

Absolute classic. Not even Metallica's best but giving it anything apart from 5 stars would be a complete disrespect. This is the record that made metal a household genre and pushed to commercial success like never before.

No skips.

One of the best if not the best albums of all time…

Yeah, this album is a stone-cold beast. Two or three all-timers on here, and very little filler even towards the end where many albums run out of puff. Not sure it's a 10/10 but definitely enough for 5 stars.

This still hits like I first listened to it as a kid. Some gems hard and soft. And some of those guitar solos 🔥🔥🔥 11 year old me is digging it

I could do without The Unforgiven but every single other song is so good. I love them.

Amazing album. OG Metallica fans like to complain that this is where they went commercial, and that may be true, but this album is still amazing.

Gilt auch für My friend of misery - völlig unterbewertet.

This is album that brought metal mainstream. Whatever your opinion of the culture it engendered, musically, the album is outstanding. Influence 5. Hits 5. Quality 5. Intangibles 5. Not even my favorite Metallica album, but it's a really good one 3.

Great talent, v uplifting thx!

My entry point into Metallica. Brilliant album, these songs are constantly on my playlists 😍

Even if Lars is a dick Enter Sandman is one of the GOAT

Fucking incredible. Sandman, sad but true, nothing else matters, what is there to even say about a run that iconic? Drums, guitar, vocals, bass, it's all so good.

This is a monster of an album. It marks a significant transition point in Metallica's journey as a band. The album is more hard rock than thrash metal but it is still brilliant. There is banger after banger on the album.

If Lars can be the 5th most successful drummer of all time, you can do anything <3

Excellent!

One of the all time great Heavy Metal albums. Run's a little long. 2 or so tracks could have been cut for a tighter album. 4.5/5. Raising to 5. PS I'm just over a quarter of the way through this list now. I'm all for expanding my music knowledge/taste but my feeling is there is more disappointment than gems to be found. Starting to believe there isn't 1001 albums worth listening to before you die and this list could seriously be condensed. We'll keep trucking along though.

Could easily be the best album of the 90s. This album brought rock back to life for me after the land of the lost 80s. After watching the video Enter Sandman on MTV I bought the album then backtracked before the release of Load. What this album offers is what the band was and where they were heading over the next 3 or 4 releases.

A metal classic, seen as some as the beginning of the end for Metallica, but was my first steps into heavier metal after growing up with Black Sabbath and Ozzy.

This album generator has been about expanding my musical horizons, but damn if I haven't had a long string of 'great' albums that I really didn't like much. Metallica's Black album is a familiar album. One I listened to many times over the years. This album was more or less my intro to Metallica, I wasn't familiar with their previous work when Enter Sandman blew up on radio and MTV when I was about 10. After familiarizing myself with everything from Kill Em All to And Justice For All, I can see how some people would find this an abrupt change to the sound of Metallica. Nevertheless, I love this album, there are so many timeless songs, from the aforementioned Enter Sandman, Whereever I May Roam, The Unforgiven Nothing Else Matters, this album is a powerful introduction to Metallica of the 90s.

top of the top

I’ve never been a huge Metallica fan, but this is the era I think of when I think of them. Great album. Probably my favorite that I’ve heard from them so far. Solid 4.5 stars

Bought this on cassette on the day it came out

Teenage me was obsessed with this. Brought back some great memories.

Cool, found 1 new song Whenever I may roam. Liked the snake on the cover :)

drums really slap. great album

Peak Mettallica IMO. Nothing but bangers on this album. To see them play this album live would be a treat. Definitely a defining point for metal and metal popularity

Hell yeah brother

enter sandman is truly one of my favs

My favorite album from Metallica. This was a staple for me in high school and I still love it.

A lot of bangers on here. Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters. The rest is okay, but nothing incredibly special.

Metallica the best

I love this album. Great riffs and solos and so many songs end up on the orchestra collaboration album S&M.

Excelente

Another solid one. No complaints.

I C O N I C 5/5

I already knew this album was going to be 5 stars as soon as I saw it pop up. This album is one of my top 10 all times so suffice to say, I love it. Sorry, to every other future album, this one is the gold standard and that’s just Sad But True.

This is probably Metallica’s most accessible album and contains most of their well known tracks. I have this, S&M and Master of Puppets all in my collection and I see no real need to have anymore. This is the album I return to most probably because of the excellence of Enter Sandman and The Unforgiven. A solid album well worthy of this list. 5/5 1/2/26

I'm a huge fan of Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, with And Justice For All being pretty fantastic too. I would choose any of those albums over this any day, but man this thing is stocked with riffs baked into my life and transports me back to early high school. Never owned the album but didn't have to as the Blitz 99.7 in Columbus still plays half this album in heavy rotation to this day. Unforgiven and Dont Tread on Me are standouts.

Haters gonna hate. This is a great album full of bangers. All these haters will never sell as much albums as Metallica has. Eat shit, mofos. 🤘🏼😂🤘🏼

Brought out the jack black in me

I need to listen to this more. Great album from start to finish.

Fan fucking tastic album hearing this live in its entirety in reverse order when the first time i saw them at the festival was amazing. Lars still cant drum for shit though

Just what I needed at 7am on a Tuesday at my desk job. 5/5

A seminal masterpiece that will forever have a place in the debate for one of the best metal albums of all time. James Hetfield’s personal songwriting, combined with some of the band’s most iconic riffs, spans from the defining singles that inspired the rebellious phase of countless generations to deeper cuts that still pack a punch, such as “The God That Failed” and “My Friend of Misery.” This feels like Metallica at their absolute peak.

Best Metallica album in my opinion

"You think one day some fucker's gonna tell you, 'You have a number one record in America,' and the whole world will ejaculate. I stood there in my hotel room, and there was this fax that said, 'You're number one.' And it was, like, 'Well, okay.' It was just another fucking fax from the office." -Lars It's a perfect album. Not their best album, but definitely best sounding. Props to Bob Rock. James's voice is consistently consistently used as a musical (rather than blunt) instrument.

Listening again reminded me how huge this album was when it was released. It's almost comical to imagine a metal album having the same cultural reach today.

I liked it

My experience with Metallica has been fleeting, listening to some of the biggest and best from them over the years, but never have I given an entire album the attention it possibly deserves. Beginning with that sinister and mysterious guitar riff, swiftly backed by drums and additional heavy guitar, "Enter Sandman" is one of those incredibly memorable tracks and a strong track to start an album with. "Sad but Trues" intro is really fun, with the power chords slamming in time with the cymbals. The epic chorus elevated this one for me, something that feels great to sing along to. What I find apparent with Metallic (at least in this album) is that they are very lyrical and the lyrics are easy to hear and follow, without sacrificing the anger in delivery so typical of this genre. "The Unforgiven" helped me to realise this. Other tracks I loved were "Don't Tread on Me", "Nothing Else Matters", "Of Wolf and Man" and "My Friend of Misery". Overall, this was a great album. Will definitely be listening to it again in future.

I never listened to much post-80s metal/rock until this album came out. Changed me. I'm not a Metallica fan, but I love this album.

Amazing

Just a great album start to finish. I've listened to it once before and honestly it was better this time around. Not Metallica's best work but definitely their most iconic 8.5/10

Amazing album. Really good lyrics with meaning behind them and very melodic for metal. Definitely exceeded my expectations and was a very enjoyable listening experience. Favourite track- The Unforgiven

OHHHYEAHHAAAHH!!!!

One of the great albums of 1991! Classic!

Oh my, I'm so happy to get this here! One of my favourite albums, and among Metallica's greatest - and they have lots of great albums. Love every minute of it. True classic.

play it loud

This album was part of the suggested to my teen years. Unfortunately, the ratings are artificially lowered by people who think it's cool to hate on Metallica - bitter at their success in an era and genre defined by defiance.

The quint essential Metallica album. It's doesn't get better than then even for someone who doesn't listen to metal. Certified bangers.

Did not expect to like this as much as I did - I knew I liked Unforgiven and a couple others, but really don't like Master of Puppets. However this album really resonated with me

If I would have gotten a tattoo when I was a teenager. It probably would’ve been a Metallica tattoo. Well I’m glad I didn’t do that. I still really enjoy their music. The black album is full of classics that I found sent me back in time. I owned this album on CD and would have played it on my school bus with my friends with my disc man and portable speakers many times. Personally I’m a bigger fan of their albums that were released before this one. But you cannot deny the mass popularity of practically every track on this album. I look forward to listening to the other three albums Metallica has on this list with you all.

If I was eating the music, this would be a solid 4. It's good, but I don't know about 5 good. With that said, this is arguably the most influential album in metal history. The talent is there and it shows a side of metal that was well ahead of its time.

Metal is not my favorite genre, but for me this feels just like the type of rock I usually listen to. It's not so metal that it's unlistenable, but it is distinct. I already knew a few songs and they are as good as ever. The album as a whole is amazing. The singing is really good and the instrumentals are amazing. Just a really good album.

Album #24: Metallica Genre (W): Heavy metal Singles: Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, Wherever I May Roam, Sad but True I have heard ES, TU, NEM, WIMR, SbT, and Of Wolf and Man, but I have not listened to the full album. Thoughts?: What an iconic album to listen to, I can’t wait to hear the deeper cuts on it. Enter Sandman is one of the greatest metal songs of all time! One of my favorite parts about Metallica is their riffs and solos, plus the tight and intricate compositions behind their music, especially heard on this album. Even though it’s softer than their other albums, I feel as though that was for the best, because as a result, they gained more knowledge about their music. Wherever I May Roam has the best intro, by far. This is one of my favorite albums so far! On top of the others I gave a five star. Favorite songs: All of it!!

This album still works simply because I love it. Which actually made me wonder why I haven’t listened to it properly, front to back, in years. I did consider knocking off a star out of pure habit—the idea that albums you played to death back in the day should be punished for it. But honestly, that logic falls apart the moment this thing starts playing.

Så var det denne da. Meget sterk, men ikke topp 5 av 'tallica for meg. Øverste sjiktet i 1001... Holder Wherever og TGTF høyt.

I mean...

Do they have flaws? Yes. Do I care? Fuck, no. 🤟🏻

A classic of the grnre

Simplesmente o melhor album de Trash Metal do planeta terra, não tem como, é DEZ!

This one was big as it was released. Still a good catch to listen.

Overhated by fans at the time. Yes it’s more streamlined and mainstream, but there is so much greatness here. Their last stand as a genuinely world class and as good as mainstream metal gets.

Yet another nostalgic trip back... Legendary Hard Rock album, and yes I said Hard Rock rather than Metal. I really wish they stayed with their 80s sound, but this is classic for a reason. Probably quite easy 5 stars, not surprisingly.

Probably their best album

Love everything about this. The energy and the instrumentation are a key standout. Easily the best metal album I've ever heard.

Great for cleaning my closet, it's fun yet not too crazy

The best

Amazing throwback to an album I have already listened to multiple times. Never gets old.

Only eclipsed by Dark Side of the Moon for second longest charting; the GOAT of metal.

5/5 - this was my first Metallica album when I started listening to the band so maybe that's why, but I don't get the hate that some people have for this. Every song is a banger imo

9.0/10 This was a huge album for me growing up...

Almost didn't need to listen to this one. What a classic.

I wasn't able to do an in depth review of this album because I was busy :( Enter Sandman 10/10 Sad But True 10/10 Holier Than Thou 9/10 The Unforgiven 10/10 Wherever I May Roam 10/10 Don't Tread On Me 10/10 Through the Never 9/10 Nothing Else Matters 9/10 Of Wolf and Man 10/10 The God that Failed 10/10 My Friend of Misery 9/10 The Struggle Within 8/10 I did listen to the whole album though and it was awesome, Metallica is good

classic

Raised on this record. Can’t believe it was my first one! Crazy!

Really struggled with whether to give this a four or a five... in the end, I'm going with five. Why: the good moments on it are extremely good and created a portal that brought the whole world into metal and metal into the whole world. For that it deserves eternal glory. My reservations... I always feel like I get kind of lost in the last third of the album. The worst moments make you say, "Great, a Metallica song like every other Metallica song." And even though I like the song, I'd be happy if I never had to hear the phrase "don't tread on me" again in my life. Still... look at The Blacklist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Metallica_Blacklist ... look at the artists who took this album so deeply to heart. It's in all of us. When I pulled it at 10 p.m. last night, I put it on to go to sleep, because even though it's metal, it's as familiar and soothing as a lullaby. "And nothing else matters..."

Banger

Larssin rummutkin on saatu levyllä kohdilleen. Selkee viis kautta viis.

Ну це легенда

Ah, the album that enraged most Metallica fans. If only they knew that St. Anger would come 12 years later. Whatever anyone says, this record is the one that made metal appeal to the masses and made Metallica be one of the greatest bands in history. Yes, you can say they sold out, but that doesn't mean that the album is bad. It's packed with hits! Some of the best songs ever are on this record. And I am saying that while being a fan of the early days of Metallica. This is an undeniable masterpiece and it definitely deserves to be on this list.

Great memories! ★★★★★

i saw them live twice this year incredible

So close no matter how far… Countless bangers throughout. Such a huge fan of this album! They have the perfect rock song on this album with Nothing Else Matters but other incredible songs with The Unforgiven and Enter Sandman! Everyone should admire the greatness here!

Fantastic Easy listening. If you like the concept of riffs listen to this.

Oh boy, here is this divisive album. Before I ramble too much further, I want it to be known that I enjoy Metallica's self-titled, as well as "...And Justice for All," as well as their earlier albums too. I know, it's heresy. Maybe they "sold out," whatever that means. It's not like they pulled a complete Maroon 5, stopped writing their own songs and became essentially a karaoke band for other people's material so they can make money. I look at the Black Album this way. Would I ever have heard any of Metallica's music in-depth should I have never purchased this album? Probably. Would I ever have listened to Metallica's other albums if I had not purchased this album? Probably not. This album was a gateway drug into harder music. So rather than be angry Metallica "sold out," I'm happy they produced something that was still hard rock but still digestible for 12 or 13-year-old me. It opened my eyes to another type of music that wasn't the music I was listening to at the time. If I had to nitpick, I would say 1-2 songs could be cut, just to reduce the run time. Yet, there is not a bad song on this album and so I don't hear too much fat that needs to be cut. The closest would be one of the last 3 songs. It's not they are even bad songs but the cut would only be for run time purposes.

Such a strong start of a record with “Enter Sandman” and “Sad But True”. I remember learning guitar and trying to play multiple riffs from this album. I found the tabs and video lessons on someones personal homepage which filmed the riffs from 4 different angles. Here that kids?! There were other places than youtube before! Anyway, as mentioned, strong start, classic Metallica. It continues with the ok “Holier than thou” before another strong hit in “The Unforgiven”. Somewhere during the next few tracks I realized that the songs are getting samey and not quite as good as I remember. Is it the 90s that are back and ruining rock music?! Who knows. Luckily “Nothing Else Matters” comes on and cements its five star rating. Not Metallica’s strongest album but one of their best still.

great album

What an album! "Back in black" for Metallica fans So many great songs, and the start of a change in direction but still fairly faithful to their old fans, and showing off their writing chops

Beh, che dire. Potente, cattivo, metal vero. Tante hit, un album da avere.

No words needed

When I saw this pop up as my album for the day, I just groaned. Not because I hate the album, no, it’s the opposite. I love this album, but I do kind of hate it. Let me explain. I had tried to get into Metallica around the And Justice For All album, but I didn’t like James Hetfield’s singing voice, or more correctly, yelling voice. But I joined the Columbia House CD Club, remember those? You sign up and get like 12 CDs for a penny and then you never buy anything again, or rahter, you never send them money for any CD they send you thereafter. They eventually get tired of coming after you and besides, I was like 14 or 15. Anyway, I happened to get a remastered version of Kill ‘Em All, Metallica's debut album, and I loved it. I then got all the Metallica albums leading up to the Black Album. When the Black Album came out, I drove to Owensboro to WaxWorks and bought it. I think I put it in my CD player and it only left it to go into another CD player. I legit listened to it for forever. It got to the point where it was too much and I had to stop. Then every time I heard a song off the album, I’d cringe, especially Enter Sandman, which is one of the greatest rock songs ever written. I'd just gone too far, got burnt out. Listening to it now, it doesn’t fill me with the same excitement or even nostalgia, but the songs are undeniable, except for The Unforgiven. I never could get into that song. I have no idea why. It’s not because it’s essentially a ballad, because I love Nothing Else Matters and that is a ballad. However, after The Unforgiven, you get Wherever I May Roam, a heavy road anthem. I wanted to talk about people who think Metallica got soft with the Black Album. I don’t think they got soft. I think they got heavier. Many of the songs on the Black Album are almost sludge or doom metal. Slow-moving, heavy arse songs that groove. I mean, were people complaining about And Justice For All being a prog album? It most certainly was. You can’t listen to the title track and not tell me that isn’t a song Dream Theater would love to play. Anyway, the Black Album is great. It may be the best heavy rock record ever made. It definitely had the effect Metallica wanted, it pushed their music out not just to the metalheads but to everyone, for better or for worse. If you haven’t listened to this album, you should. If you hate, or think you hate, heavy rock and metal, this album will open your eyes. Now, my personal favorites on this album that I still love and will listen to? Sad But True, one of the heaviest songs ever; Through the Never, just relentless; The Struggle Within, one of the few songs that could have been on And Justice For All or Master of Puppets. But the whole album is great and if you haven’t heard, you should immediately.

Hard to rate this one. I loved this album in the 90s and for the most part it holds up. People who weren't there can't know how revolutionary this album was. It was metal that got RADIO PLAY. And yeah, some of these lyrics make me cringe right out of my skin now, but that may be more of how I've grown as a person than anything else. I can't bring myself to give it anything less than 5 stars, even though if I were being honest, it's probably only a 4 to me now.

What's to say about it -- it just hits.

Love this album. Brings me back to my childhood when I first started playing guitar. Enter sandman rips as the intro

Riffs are thick and tasty! Clean production, vocals melodic and controlled. Some unbelievably sick, iconic tunes. Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman have Godlike status. Sad But True is my favourite. Dark lyrics are not always for me but I cant imagine anything else accompanying the music. An epic journey of tasty riffs and wild, piercing solos. 9/10

Awesome slab of brooding rock from start to finish Bolder, rounded and polished sound compared to previous albums

Amazing!

Banger

The metal album that is Practically Perfect in every way. Damn, those songs are fire.

Masterpiece

nawet 6!

AGRRGHJJHHHH GOTTA LOVE SOME METALLLICAA!!! i dont like this album as much in comparison to the first 4 albums, but you gotta admit it still is pretty solid album. no skips for me.

Solid 🪨

One of their best albums. I already own this.

This is one of, if not the first album from this list that I have listened to many times, so no surprise that is it maybe my favorite album so far. No groundbreaking observations this time around, except I have really grown to appreciate more "rock" style drums in metal. The drummer can still provide plenty of drive, while also reinforcing melodies and giving more character to the song than a lot of metal drumming. 5/5.

Another game changing album. This is the record that introduced me to Metallica when I was a kid. I’ve never been a huge fan but as the years go by the more I dig these dudes. This album is top notch.

This album rules.

amazing

An absolute classic.

🤘🏻 - it's five ⭐️’s!

There aren't enough stars in the universe to properly rate this album.

An album which you can go through without skipping any song, and sing along, is a good one! A heavy metal milestone!!!

Exit light, motherfucker. Top album of Metallica, dude.

Always a great listen!

Absolute classic

There is a fine line between majestic and ludicrous. This triggered memories of listening to’Nothing Else Matters on repeat. Much like another reviewer on here I have been trying to find excuses not to give this a 5. I can’t

I’m not often in the mood for this genre, but this is the album to turn to if I am. Some songs are lifted by the strength of several great songs, which is the reason for the perfect rating. The Grammy was deserved.

Going to see them next year but this is the 1st time i have listened to a full album of them. Good album.

I don't even like Metallica that much but after some crappy Bee Gees album, I am so ready to rock. Turns out, one's opinion of Metallica shouldn't matter much...this is a 5-star album by all metrics. First of all, similar to an album like Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, the sheer amount of songs on this that saw significant radio play is insane. Secondly, the guitar work, drums, and vocals are all top notch and work incredibly well together. There is a cohesive sound throughout but unlike many bands with a signature sound, the songs don't get too repetitive. The last couple of songs weren't as strong as the rest, but I don't think there was a bad song on the album. Metallica, I take back most of the bad things I've said about you--you have not only at least one great album in you, you have a masterpiece.

An album ive listened to a bunch, really enjoyex rediscovering it.

This album is a classic; no notes.

Oh yeah. Oh fuck yeah. Hey, I get it. It's not their best album. But it's the first album of theirs that I heard and while I'd rather listen to the stuff that came before it, this is an album that cannot be ignored. It's rare that I pull this one out when I want to listen to Metallica, but when I do I'm transported back to being 12 years old and getting this album.

I'm not the biggest Metallica fan in the world, but I've always appreciated them. And this album is just full of bangers. I'd probably give it a 4.5, but it's gotta be rounded up.

Sehr gut, aber nichts für schwache Ohren.

a classic!

Really good. First entire metal album and loved it it

Absolute legends. Banger from start to finish.

Unholy and godly

Jo, geil

Absolute cinema. El mejor álbum de metal de la historia bajo mi punto de vista, un absoluto 10.

Not a single bad track

Every song is top notch! An outrageous amount of hooks that make metal accessible

Yes! 😍 Saturday morning. Coffee. This album. NB. Hmmm, this review was from those weeks ago, when this album was available during the weekend. Well, nothing has changed. Still have my coffee this morning and still this album is a yes! :)

One of the best metal bands of all time and this album proves it. Listen to it frequently and never bored.

Classic album!

Love this album!

This album is a big contribution to me having tinnitus now, from listening to it blaring in my headphones so much. It's still a great album, one of the most quintessential metal albums ever. On a more recent and critical listen, I wish they balanced out the songs more, as the front half of the album is so loaded but the back half, especially the last three songs, aren't as impressive. Still, it is a headbanging good time with probably the best opening track to any album ever.

It's Metallica hitting the big time. I wish they'd continued this trajectory and had a mid-90s album before the wank of Load/Reload. This is an album of anthems and while not all hit the mark it's an example of one of the few times an 80s metal band changed successfully with the times.

Dang another great one

Classic 5/5

Quintessential Metallica album. If you haven’t listened to any of their albums, this is a great place to become acquainted.

One of my all time favourites

classic ofc

ANYWHERE I ROOOOOAAAM

Fantastic album! I'm pretty sure I knew all the words to this one. 5/5 for it's social impact.

Such a huge sounding album packed with hits. The only negative to the album is seeing a thrash metal band at the top of their game changing into a hard rock band at the top of their game, which is only a negative in retrospective perspective.

One of my absolute favourite albums. It's been in my collection since its release, and I still love it.

Bonzin

I mean... I don't need this album recommended to me :) I've listened to this thing 5 billion times already. I know it's a five star album.

So, this is the first cd I bought when I was a kid, so this album holds a pretty special place in my heart. But, nostalgia aside, I still think Metallica’s black album holds up really well. That said, the production on the black album is super slick, and though I don’t super mind because every instrument sounds big and rich and full, Metallica really sounds great when their focus is on raw aggression. This record kind of shifted from the tone of their earlier work. Perhaps this record marks the shift from drunk kids to more sophisticated drunk middle agers…it’s still good, but it’s different. The songs got a little shorter and more radio friendly. I don’t know if Bob Rock is to blame for that (though personally, I always have blamed him…Bob Rock, as far as I recall, was known for his super slick production and turning metal bands into pop stars), but this is the last of Metallica’s great records before they tried their hand at being an alternative/grunge band. Well, nothing gold can stay, I guess. After this record, Metallica seemed to struggle with their identity, and it has seemed to me that the magic has been well and truly gone post-black album. Sad as that is, this record still manages to rule pretty hard. Master of Puppets was the pinnacle of their work, followed by And Justice For All, and then this. There are a lot of better songs on Kill em All and Ride the Lightning, but as a “front-to-back” album, I think this is their 3rd best. In any case, it’s a 5-star record for me, easy. 5/5

Classic. Pretty flawless.

Love it, best Metallica album maybe

I'd consider Metallica among my favorite groups, so I was waiting patiently for this album. It definitely did not disappoint, with so many of their hits and a few of my personal favorites.

AWESOME

BUT I'LL TAKE MY TIME ANYWHERE FREE TO SPEAK MY MIND ANYWHERE AND I'LL REDEFINE ANYWHERE ANYWHERE I ROAAAAAAAAM WHERE I LAY MY HEAD IS HOME, YEAH YEAH

banger after banger after banger

I am being held at gunpoint to rate this

Stonks, one of my all time favorites

Here. We. Fucking. Go. Rating this fair and objective is something I can't do since this album means so much to me. This belongs in the holy grail category. I grew up with this album, it devoured my heart and soul in a time when nobody was there for me. The Black Album not only introduced me to the broader genre of Metal, it also made me start learning how to play guitar. BUT - it's not my alltime favourite Metallica album, that spot belongs to Death Magnetic. Contrary to others, my favourites are not Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven or Nothing Else Matters - it's Through The Never & My Friend Of Misery. Metallica was at their highest artistical point when they created this album, it made the band go through hell and even shattered the marriages of both Hetfield and Ulrich. It's the most successful metal album every produced, but also came with its' fair share of criticism and made people think that Metallica sold out. I personally couldn't disagree more with these opinions since it showed that Alcoholica was able and willing to crash through the boundaries of Thrash Metal, and they went through multiple style changes with almost every album released after this. You gotta respect that these guys make it work.

One of the best records ever made.

buncha no names really thought they could get away with copying Guilty Gear

alright, fine.

This is my 11 album i've listened to so far. I really like this album is might be just because im in a good mood and i really like this type of music right now. However i feel like this is some great metal and metalica definitly deserves on this list. Even has a riff on the guitar that i've learned. This is my favorite so far 92/100

Nothing Else Matters takes it to 4. The solo to 4.5 and the rest is a rounding. Consistently strong throughout. Sorry, but this was an evolution. I can see why some deride it. It proved that thrash was not the be all and end all and metal could be better.

Fantastic give me 5 more of them

I love this album. I like how it starts as a solid rock album and pushes further and further into metal dragging anyone who wasn't sure they'd really like metal along until it's too late. I like how as an album of heavy rock and metal it is not sexist in anyway. I love the energy and the guitar playing, the song structures are great. Hetfields vocals are both amusingly somewhat camp and yet fit the music perfectly.

To the public it is their best album. Honestly it is an amazing hard rock album. For Metal fans, not their best album, but good pop rock. I remember going into work late to line up at the record store. But then again I was a fan since the demo tape. I would rank this as their third best album, after Kill and Puppets.

Легендарные треки легендарной группы, слушать под энергичное настроение, бег

Masterpiece. Banger after banger. The contrast between Sad but True and Nothing Else Matters, both incredible, blew me away

so full of classics

A classic for a reason with every song a world famous banger. I don’t know how Metallica were perceived when they entered the metal scene back in the day, but I’m glad I did. Modern music wouldn’t be the same without their profound influence, and I’d say it was an influence for the better

Jammer dat ik mij live dood zou ergeren aan Lars Ullrich, want dit is een fantastische plaat

enter sandman amazingggg way to start an album ofc. such a good album love it so much and made me nostalgic for seeing them live!!!

Big dumb fun 5/5

A highly recommended album to start listening to Metallica. It includes two hits. It's amazing

The ultimate sellout album by the ultimate sellout band. It rules.

I think this album, even though I never really went through its entirety was my introduction to metal. Overproduced and too commercial? Maybe. I like it tho. Multiple straight up fire tracks. They say that Ten - Pearl Jam feels like a "best of" album, despite just being an album... and I get the same vibe from Metallica.

Definitely a great album

10/10 always has been in my top 10 oat, one of the best metal albums ever, introduced me to metal. every single song is insanely good, enter sandman the unforgiven and nothing else matters all in one album is insane, seeing them in july 😛😛😛 favourite songs: nothing else matters, don’t tread on me, through the never.

One of Metallica’s finest album!
