Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Pleasant but homogenous and boring 80s style synth pop. I bet this sounded dated even when it came out.
I heard of them but not sure I know any songs really. It's really cheesy sounding now, some of the effects are pure cheese. But for some reason, I thought it wasn't bad.
I LOVE 'West End Girls' so I had high hopes for this. Meh.
Meh. Mediocre 90s techno-pop. IMO not worthy of inclusion on this list.
i like the boring song
Third Pet Shop Boys album on the list and the first to warrant being there.
I’d not listened to this Pet Shop Boys album before it was alright
To face the truth is a good song, it reminds me of some bossa nova and jazzy music. The album so far is not bad, its actually good, beside being a genre that i dont like pretty much. Yet, just to listen you know that they know what they doing. My october symphony is very mediocre, so far it is the worst song. But as a whole, seens like a good album. For me isnt perfect, yet i regonize it as good, even being something i wont listen again. I think it is a solid 4 or 3,5. For it, i'll give 3, just to be round. The last songs weren't so good, but yet very consistent. Maybe fans of synth pop will enjoy this more than me.
Mellow stuff, don’t mind listening to this while doing some work. No crazy bangers or mindblowing tunes though
I didn’t dislike much of this but good lord the songs didn’t need to be six minutes long
Liked the vibe more than the songs
The album started off strong with Being Boring, but I struggled to remain engaged the whole time. The beats felt silly in some songs (while I am sure they were great at the time), so I had a difficult time taking the album seriously. As a One Direction fan, I can understand what non-fans hear when they listen to them.
Some Are Here And Some Are Missing 1001 Albums Generator 179 (12/9/2025) Behaviour is the second album I have heard by the English duo Pet Shop Boys, and it opens with my favorite song I've heard by them. Being Boring is a triumph of a song, both in its musicality and in its sad lyrics reflecting on the AIDS epidemic. Unfortunately, none of the other songs here really come all that close to the opener. However, This Must Be The Place I Waited Years To Leave and How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously? are both really good. The former sounds like a Depeche Mode song (positive connotation) and the latter is perhaps the most catchy song on the album. My October Symphony has this interesting trip-hop sounding beat, which is pretty cool. But man some of the songs here are such stinkers. My wife said that Only The Wind sounded like a default setting, which is so true. It's cheese to the max. Nervously is also dreadful. And then there's a handful of inoffensive, but low-impact tracks throughout as well. Behaviour is definitely better than the Boys' next album, Very, but it's still not super great. Feeling a 3/5. Favs: Being Boring How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously? My October Symphony Least Fav: Only The Wind
groovy
great
It was fine.
As someone who saw Destroyer twice this year and spent a good amount of time listening to his music, I find it hard not drawing comparisons. There’s the same relaxed lounge singer vibes all over this album, but it’s missing a lot of Dan Bejar’s weird and surreal lyrics and at times it feels really dated. I knew almost nothing about the Pet Shop Boys going into this other than maybe having heard their name mentioned in passing a couple times, so I had no idea what to expect from this album, but I kind of dug it. I don’t think I’ll ever really listen to this again though, whenever I’m in the mood for this kind of music, I’d just throw on Kaputt or Rubies instead.
I didn't enjoy this one as much as their other albums. It's not bad, but its very slow and almost kind of a downer. Not really my regular or go to style of music, but it has its merits.
Not bad but not going to stick this album on specifically
A little more forgettable than “Very,” which I had yesterday, but still solid
More mellow than the Pet Shop Boys songs I remember, and I’m not sure that’s an improvement. But still perfectly solid.
It's not my favorite Pet Shop Boys
I had 'Actually' by the Pet Shop Boys a few days ago and overall I liked this album more. It's from 1990 and doesn't have that distinctive 80s sound anymore, and while it doesn't have any big hits on it it works quite well as an album. It's calm and understated album. I don't think I will come back to it but it was a good listen.
This synth-pop album moves with a composed elegance, its refined arrangements and restrained vocals suggesting emotion held behind glass. It’s carefully shaped and quietly affecting, though its control can feel overly mannered. Like watching city lights through a taxi window on a drizzly evening, it’s smooth and reflective, even if it keeps you slightly removed from its core.
Not a bad album by the Pet Shop boys, but certainly not their best I've heard on this list. Mostly forgettable but some nice strings added throughout. 2.7/5 - 3/5
I’ve never heard a Pet Shop Boys album in its entirety. Definitely heard, and enjoyed, the hits in the 80s. This is some dark pop. Jealous? Who’s jealous? I’m not jealous. You do that.
Good range of chill and more intense tracks yet it all feels very much like them, was nice
Average not bad but a bit boring
Pretty decent
This is my first album with this generator after my decision to start exploring new genres of music. It is really good, even if past me would have scoffed at this type of music. Shows my ignorance that I have never heard about these guys before since the Wikipedia article says that they are extremely popular. However, they might be a bit sad for my current mindset.
Its sounds good but its not really my style.
There is not much variety between songs but this is not necessarily a bad thing here; the album focuses on simple, chill synth and keyboard sounds with deadpan vocals delivering themes of nostalgic hindsight - laughing and crying in a city bedsit. It's a little bit kitschy and a little bit sad. There are some sweet melodies but it's mostly so subtle and gentle it might pass you by. It gets a light 3 from me.
Cute
Good 80's synth, but nothing special.
I didn't like Pet Shop Boys when they were current. So far with the re-listen and hearing as an album for the first time and not just radio singles, I'm appreciating them more. Still a bit too "smooth jazz" for my tastes to rise too high. Final opinion, a fine listen but I'm not going back to it.
Wish I found the singer a more compelling vocal presence because I dig the synth pop backgrounds on most of these. First two songs best on the album
Was fun to listen to!
Meh. Still not convinced by Tenant’s voice.
I liked the new wave vibe on some of the tracks. Others felt more like a precursor to that early 90s electronic music sound that I personally find a bit grating. Decent, but I’m not going to listen to it again.
I don't know how I've unintentionally listened to all of the main Pet Shop Boys' releases when I don't even enjoy their work that much! I think, while I won't return to this project, it's very well produced and I can understand why anyone would enjoy it!
This is a tough one to rate, pretty good is largely how I feel about it, but I can't recall any tracks here a few hours after listening. Is that my fault? Ehh idk here's 3 stars. Easy listening and cool
These guys are good but they got a fear of commitment when it comes to chords, them progressions be progressing
Nothing too amazing, but fun enough I guess.
Some fun beats that get a bit funky at its best and a bit Depeche Mode at its worst. The singers voice is a net negative on the whole album. Meh 3
I absolutely hated the last PSB album so lets see how this one goes. Being Boring to kick it off is actually a real nice funky number. This album is in for some good things if it stays in this theme. First half was quite good but the second half fell off massively into some pretty poor synth-pop. Still would say that this was much above how much I thought I was going to like it.
Highlights: Being Boring, This Must The Place, How Can You Expect
80's synth pop, has some dance style club songs mixed with some slower ballads. Most that like that 80's style will appreciate this album
A few songs on this are incredible, and had me FLOATING on vibes. The rest of the album, although it's pretty good too, does sound a bit dated at times and doesn't quite scratch the itch of what I'm looking for in synthpop. That's not a knock on these guys -- they were making the synthetizer SING for the time -- but it's not an album I think I'll revisit much. To me they're a lot like Kraftwerk in that regard. Standouts: Being Boring • How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously? • My October Symphony
For a PSB album it was ok and what I expected. Most of the album sounds the same.
I get it. It's just not my thing
While I typically enjoy this genre of music, Pet Shop Boys just aren’t for me.
O show deles foi fantástico, aliás! Eles possuem obras melhores. 3.5/5
Reminds me of the Bee Gees a litle, but with electronic music. 3 stars or C+.
Not a bad listen
I enjoyed this the least of the 3 PSB albums so far. Too slow.
Better than the other Pet Shop Boys we've had on here.
A bit boring, but well made and still enjoyable enough. It's like the British version of enigma. The opening track has such an unfortunate name that it makes it easy to make fun of. Still enjoyed this, a nice combination of synth-pop and, at the time up and coming genres like house and dance.
Sounds like an album from the band that did “West End Girls”.
My least favourite of the 3 PSB albums I’ve heard - who’d’ve thunk I’d prefer the balls-out disco anthems to the (slightly) more subtle and restrained stuff? There are still a few bangers on this one (like Being Boring and How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously?), but also some more forgettable tunes that aren’t strong enough to distract from those gaudy synth sounds. 2.5 / 3
Not really for me. That kinda of early dance pop. And it has the I'm Too Sexy, drum beat playing all the time. You hear it once and it won't go away lol
More 90's synth-pop that I never really got into back in the day. The 90's were my country music phase. As I've gotten older and my music tastes have expanded, I can appreciate synth-pop in small doses. This album feels like It's easy to put this on in the background while you concentrate on other tasks. But nothing stands out as a must listen. I feel this is a good representation of the genre. There's certainly a place for this kind of music. Like... It's the kind of album some gay guy with the wrong impression might put on to seduce me.
Fine. Pleasant and decent grooves. No standout songs for me.
I think these Boys caught me at a good time. I was digging into some synthy 80s music just a couple days ago. Some of this is really fun but it really goes on longer than needed. Shush a bit, tuneage.
Oh, yeah. It was alright. Never really into the Oet Shoo Boys, but they’re OK. I’m glad they make music people like.
“How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously?” sounds like a Genesis-era Sonic the Hedgehog song haha Some great moments, but it didn’t really stick in my brain. Overall enjoyable though.
I never want to actively listen to Pet Shop Boys but usually end up enjoying many of their tracks. Good electronic pop.
It was fine. Sort of like the other Pet Shop Boys that were generated, nothing here annoyed me to the point of turning off or makes me want to listen again anytime.
3
Out of all the pop subgenres, synthpop (along with art pop) is probably the closest to enjoyable for me. It’s not something I would be able to listen to for hours on end without getting bored, but it’s better than most pop. I don’t usually enjoy something that’s as chill as this album, but the vibe here is pretty nice. The opening track is the catchiest one, and the others are not as good, but they’re still pretty enjoyable. That being said, this type of music needs to really be exceptional to impress me (e.g., Imaginal Disk), and this album is not quite there (a bit too relaxed for my liking), but the atmosphere and the lush, detailed production are very pleasant. 7/10
i respect pet shop boys but i cannot say that i like them
Nice album.
Alright fun, but still feels like second rate
Pretty boring sound after their excellent stuff from the 80s, but still enjoyed listening.
Ehh. Kinda boring. Thought I would recognize something but didn't.
solidly meh
Lounge disco - a bit odd but it’s not bad. The first track kind of sums it all up, really.
Preppy and dance-pop like, leaning towards sophisti-pop. Very much a Harold Faltermeyer joint too, with the ever present use of synths and keyboards. It's almost too...sterile at times though? There were some elements I enjoyed, namely some of the chill and vibe-y tracks. I don't think the rest aged that well unfortunately.
There's something nicely melancholic about the music, but I can't get over the "default preset" sound of it all. Those synths had been around for a while. But maybe that's actually not detrimental to my judgement: this album is a nice enough artifact. Not quite digging it, however.
Came out in 1990 but sounds like peak 80s to me. A bit sleepier than I hoped it would be.
A bit bland by their standards
Very surrised by how enjoyable this was for being 80-s ish synth pop
I would say a nothingburger from the Pet Shop Boys. It's not bad though, but nothing special
The fact that this came out in 1990 means that these guys weren’t just chasing trends with this album. This synthy sound was on the way out by then, which means that these guys genuinely thought that this was the best way for them to express themselves. That leads me to appreciate it as slightly more than another generic 80s pop album.
Not really my thing tbh
The Pet Shop Boys are a unique and fun sound and provide great listening music in the car. I just don't think that they offer music that is lasting and I think that they play to a limited listening group. Great vocals but few of their songs remain in your head once the air time is over.
The internet notes that Pet Shop Boys are a synth-pop group, and all this time I thought they were a rock and roll band. I guess there is a need to categorize everything. This album was enjoyable listening, and I thought it got better as it went along. But there were too many average songs to boost its rating to four stars.
Chill vibe
A pleasant enough listen, although I found myself thinking when will it be over? Neils vocals are an acquired taste, not one that agrees with me. Good use of beats but the lyrics are so serious.
Some of the lyrics are interesting, thought provoking even, but musically this is all a bit safe. A lot of the songs sound the same and it does get a bit boring after a while. I could get through it because nothing here is bad, but nothing is that exciting either. It’s…fine.
It’s fine for background music if you don’t have to actually listen to it. I love the first PSB album. This I didn’t. It was decidedly meh.
Probably the best form of Everything But the Girl and The xx. Still suffers from the obnoxiousness of both of those groups.
So so
Again, I don't dislike Pet Shop Boys at a songwriting level, but the overall style just doesn't grab me. I suppose I enjoyed the "Very" album a little more than this one, but it's kind of close.
A surprisingly mellow album as I mainly recall the Pet Shop Boys being a lot more “disco” so this was a fine album just to chill and listen to.
Didn’t really do much for me. Found it mostly light and forgettable
One of those albums which is obviously high-quality, but not one to which I respond personally. They do certainly capture a time and mood.
Not bad, but definitely not my style
Previously rated: Actually (3/5) ********************** You're inviting the jokes when you start your album with a song with "Boring" in the title and the actual music is boring too. It picks up a little with "How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously?" and "So Hard" was OK. It's a pop album that is trying to sound sophisticated, but that doesn't make it good. Just slightly above a 2/5.
Behavior finds the Pet Shop Boys in synth pop territory, experimenting with beat-heavy sounds that would become more prominent on Very. I personally enjoy this style more.
For a Pet Shop Boys album, this was a bit downbeat. While the lyrics were a witty as ever, I didn't find the hooks to be as catchy as ever. Not bad, but I didn't enjoy this as much as I did the group's previous three albums (especially Introspective, which is conspicuously absent from this list). Key tracks: Being Boring
Hieman ironisesti Pet Shop Boysin ehkä tylsin albumi, kun tunnelma on rauhallinen koko ajan. Hassuista pikku pimputuksista ja 2000-luvun ekojen vuosien kitaroista kyllä ehdottomasti sympatia- / hymy tuli huulille -pisteet.
Much better than I could of imagined as I’m not a big fan of their music generally though they have a few decent tunes. So a whole listenable album was a very pleasant surprise!
Have always liked this album. “Being Boring” and “Jealousy” make a nice bookend of slower songs. Yet it’s the faster paced songs “How Can You…” and “So Hard” that show more that PSB wit. The rest is ‘fine’ to mediocre though, and creates too much ennui. Prefer the album before (“Introspective”) and after (“Very”).
Gay sounds! Another gay sounds, the first one is more gay then this one. I prefer this one: more melancholic, profund and misterius. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I like to listen. Enjoyable.
I like older Pet Shop Boys this album and it’s rhythm track or very annoying.
Fun
I've heard of this band, but I don't think I have really listened to them. They're sound and his voice sounds familiar. I do believe I have heard a track of theirs. I dig this. Very 80's. Good stuff. I dig it. 3-stars
Pretty decent synth pop. They definitely use some effects to make it feel grandiose which seems pretty influential. It was decent.
I do like Pet Shop Boys but not as much as the creator of this list does.
First half lived up to its promise by being boring. Second half was better.
I'm still hearing the kind of middle-tempo, atmospheric, synthpop I was hearing from the 'Boys in the mid 1980s! I worked in clubs and Top 40 radio during their heyday, and they were very well received musically and lyrically. Behaviour might not have been as targeted as the earlier albums, but there was a quite a taste turnover during that time as well.
Meh
Neat 80s synth stuff, overall felt dated.
The Pet Shop Boys are at their best when their songs have a certain poignancy to them. This is a great collection of Neil and Chris at their most melancholic. Whilst not some of my favourite songs instrumentally (the keyboard work on this album can get quite hokey), lyrically they’re firing on all cylinders.
Buen tecno pop disco. Sin interés
For some reason I thought this was 60’s, then I listened and it’s 80’s? Weird. It’s alright
We're going pet shopping again. I would say I'm impressed by how insistent this list is on recommending the music of Pet Shop Boys, though much to the credit of the band they're immensely successful and have enjoyed a long-lasting career of critical acclaim. I've always been subconsciously aware of these guys due to their offhand mention in The Office, so there's that goin' for 'em, too. My previous Pet Shop Boys album - Very - was an experience I didn't enjoy. I remember that album for it's Very of-the-time dance music and some ridiculously shitty instrumentation/vocals. In all fairness, if I were to give that album a go now I would more than likely come away with a less hostile impression. I'm no longer in the "early album blues" of my thousand album voyage. I've been out at sea for quite some time now. There appears to have been a bit of a mix-up at the album factory, as I'm surprised by the sound of this album. I'm by no means an aficionado of 90s dance, though I've always associated the stanky jank of Very with early 90s dance music and the subdued, ambient, atmospheric sound of this preceding album with late 90s dance music. In any case, it's pretty alright. Being Boring is a solid opener. I like the rave ambience that hangs over the piece and the miscellaneous, plucky electronic sounds that appear throughout the song (this is an electronic album. You'll just have to deal with my inability to describe anything). This Must Be the Place I Waited-geez this is a long ass title is a good follow up. The percussion on the track reminds me of another song. Wait, lemme turn this shit off for a sec it's on the tip of my braincell oh my gorsh what the fuck is it. Aha! 3:30 of the Glass Beach song "Dallas". Amazing what the mind can conjure. That album is one I haven't heard in ages and was one of the first I ever sat down and listened to. Takes me back to simpler times. Anyways, the bass guitar is a nice addition to the long ass title song, too. Moving on. To Face the Truth is an even better track. I have no idea how to describe the electronic sound or what works about it, but it's easily the strongest song on the album. The miscellaneous, thudding electronic sounds in the chorus are good. The relaxing vocals are paired nicely with the subdued, yet lively sound and the piano goes a long way in the giving the song a serene, undistilled vibe. I'd describe the song as "techno-tropical". It's very relaxing. How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously? (they SERIOUSLY need to work on their song titles) is another good song. It's likely the best showing in the songwriting department. That chorus is very strong. I also like the "trickling" percussion sound on "Nervously". The way the song builds and deepens over the course of the track is pleasing, too. It's difficult to say much about this album as it's pretty much the same thing across every track. Some basic songwriting and lyrics, too. I can't complain as it's ultimately a pleasing sound, though I can't say that songs like The End of the World and Jealousy did much to hold my attention. Truth be told this album does lose me somewhere along the way, though it's a solid inclusion. 90s dance was a unique and culturally dominant variant of music, so it's definitely worthy of being immortalised on this list. This specific album is a solid pick, too. I may return to it sometime in the future. =================== Album number 200! Just 17 more to go and I will have officially cleared a fifth of the list. The last hundred albums haven't been as kind to me as the previous hundred, though this period has marked a pretty significant change in my ability to appreciate music. Through the process of trying to articulate my thoughts on music I've become much more understanding of the genres that didn't work for me in the past. I've also found a bit of a passion in trying to review music. It's easily the most daunting of any artform to write about, which is definitely a challenge I enjoy. Out of the past hundred albums only one has managed to solidify itself as a favourite of mine: Royksopp's Melody A.M.. A little disappointing. The previous hundred consisted of two albums that I really enjoyed: A Wizard / A True Star and The Stone Roses. Maybe the next hundred will meet the quota by presenting me with three albums that I really like. There are other albums from this hundred that I like, though not nearly enough to warrant the "favourite" status. Meat Is Murder was pretty good - especially The Headmaster Ritual. Cosmo's Factory surprised me with it's quality. I was not a fan of Bayou Country, the previous album from Creedence. Kollaps worked quite well for me despite the abominable user score. Vespertine by Bjork finally made me get off my ass and listen to her music. It's quite good musically, though I'm still not sold on Bjork's voice or wacked out lyrics. Pet Sounds is the album I am most enthusiastic about revisiting. There are many good creative choices on that album that I hope will become more polished with time. Dusty in Memphis by Springy Dustfield was another good album. I didn't have the wisdom to give it a 4 at the time, though I would now. A classy, quality pop album from a time when those were on the way out. This hundred marked the end of many multi-album artists and the introduction of a few more. I listened to the final albums from ABBA, The Cure, Black Sabbath and Green Day. I also rolled the first Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Queen, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Talking Heads and R.E.M. albums. Phew - quite a lot of introductions.. Let's see how many favourite albums are still in the trunk. Hopefully I don't exhaust my supply too early - many of the recent albums have been ones that I've already heard. The Beatles: 4/7 (-2 since last hundred) Eels: 1/1 The Flaming Lips: 2/2 Gorillaz: 1/1 Pink Floyd: 3/4 Radiohead: 2/6 Total: 13 albums remain
Not my favorite petshop boys album
okay but not for me
First couple songs were great with their kinda Depeche Mode meets New Order vibe. Seriously thought I was cruising towards an easy four on this one. Quickly though, that dark vibe gave way to 90's pop type stuff, ballads, new jack swing, etc. Not that those aren't good tracks to go down, just I'm not feeling them as much in this context especially with the first couple songs being the vibe I was expecting. Fine album, but not really grabbing me.
A few great songs otherwise ok. 3.5/5
This was considerably more gentle than I expected. Sort of a precursor to Air in my opinion. Pleasant, but always right on the edge of being outdated and a litttle dull. I wonder how many more years this will be listenable
I don't hate it... the synth pop stuff is good, but I just really don't like the vocals. Gonna give this one a 2.6 or so... It's well produced synth pop.
Jeg synes det lyder super, men udforsker heller ikke ret meget mere end den ene stemning og lyd, og så bliver 50 minutter lidt langt
Kan måske godt blive lidt ensartet men det lyder fedt! De bedste numre er virkelig fede!
Exactly what I expected when I think of Pet Shop Boys.
Release and Burning the Heather are their best albums. So far the two on this list have been blander ones.
This seems to be the one without any hits. I wasn't able to pay much attention today; it was not bothersome but nothing grabbed me.
odd but good
A few classic songs but generally we don't think they're an album artist.
His voice is kinda annoying.
Tough to separate my affection for a lot of music from this specific era from how I respond to it (having not listening to it in over 30 years maybe). For me, the first electronic album looms large here: PSB’s own contributions to it and even having Marr present. Also helps having Mr Axel-F himself producing. And Angelo! They continue to pull from r&b; previously Motown, now contemporary soul hits and, in one unfortunate moment, New Jack Swing. That aside, it’s a pretty well-executed set for the duo. I like, but tend to tire of Tennant’s voice over the course of an entire collection, but that’s a me problem.
It's exactly what it is. Pop music from 1990. Nothing more, nothing less.
Not bad. Early new age genre so I give them points for that.
I remembered Pet Shop Boys as a 80s disco band, but this was pretty cool, chill and funky. I actually liked it.
Osaksi liian loungemaista lässyä mutta välistä hyvää kamaa.
Eh, not bad but made me sleepy
Cool album with a great finishing track, really enjoyed this one. Hard to categorize, but good music is good music. 7.3/10
Good production Performance ruins the vibe a little bit He sounds like gru
At first its fun, different, and interesting. After a while thought it becomes all one note and very samsies. I don't want that to take away from something different and that this is a good album for some mellow days. But it could benefit from just a little variety.
Funny that this starts with a song called Being Boring, because that’s a pretty good description of this album. It wasn’t offensive or bad, but I didn’t find it good either. Just kinda there. And like I was having a conversation with that person who’s always a negative Nathan. Even when the underlying musical structure seemed interesting, the vocals brought it down a notch and sucked the energy out a little. Nearly a 2, but I’ll be nice.
Is this on the jukebox for profiling purposes? Don’t recognize a song on it. Dance!! But dance sadly. It’s much better than I expected.
Not bad
While good these songs are easily forgettable
I’ve actually mostly enjoyed all the Pet Shop Boys albums I’ve gotten here, but it does seem a little unfair that they have (at least) three entries. I’d keep this one and toss the others.
Meh
Good vibes, and nothing more. It just cements my thoughts that PSB is a great singles band. ⭐⭐⭐
Slower electronic. Found it enjoyable, and the voice sounds pretty unique to me
This is fine but I guess I don't like the Pet Shop Boys as much as I thought I would!
Good electronic pop music but sounds pretty much like everything else they’ve ever done. Not bad but not earth shattering
It's pretty good, but at times the laid back mood makes it lose its focus for me. Still pretty enjoyable overall
Seriously track 1 says everything about this record and possibly ythis group. Nah jk it's not that bad, top teir 80s production at least
Pet Shop boys are great but this album is middling at best
A scoop of vanilla ice cream
Didn't mind this, kinda made me think of proto-postal service, or maybe dancy Cure if Robert Smith wasn't so sad. Slower stuff was a bit of a drag, but enjoyed the upbeat shit.
I liked the upbeat stuff more than the slower stuff. Some of it reminded me of Flight of the Conchords though. Being my introduction to Pet Shop Boys, not a terrible listen. 3.5 stars.
That's not my taste in music - But ok
Really nice
I'll give it a somewhat generous 3. It is rather plain pop music, but good at it and for some reason I quite like them. Maybe not their best album.
Some of the beats are amazing. The singing is blah. But them beats on some of these🔥🔥🔥
Engaging synth work; the instrumentation and production were my favorite part. Some of the songs are maybe stretched past their tearing point. I do wonder how this sounded to the original 1990 audience. Was it dated already by then? Was this still the prevailing sound of pop music? Makes me wonder, I guess.
While I'd choose musicians that played actual instruments over computers all day every day, I was surprised that this was actually listenable. (What is it with this author's obsession with electronica?) I wouldn't ever seek this out but I wouldn't cringe at having to listen to it either. 2.75/5
pretty good but just makes me think of other, even better Pet Shop Boys songs. the singles on this were not as peak as basically any of their other albums
I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. 3.5
decent synth album, probably won't go back.
I can see the appeal, I really can. It's got that house / electronica kind of feel. It's just... the vocals are very nasally, which grated on me. A LOT. I probably would have gotten into it more if they had a less nasally singer. And because of it being more of a dance music format, the lyrics got a bit repetitive. So... I didn't HATE it, but the vocals made it tough to sit through. Top tracks: "Jealousy," "This Must Be The Place I Waited Years To Leave", "Being Boring," "How Can You Expect To Be taken Seriously?"
Speaking of British synth-pop (just finishing listening to The The's debut album), here's one of the quintessential British synth-pop bands. With their fourth album? Already rated their fifth album. I guess they're going to get at least three albums on the list because one of their first two albums must make the list - they were important and relevant to synth pop before the 90's. It's melodic and all, but it's kind of background music to me. Same kind of sound throughout. Honestly, for me, the biggest part of this album culturally or historically was their music video for Being Boring. I remember seeing that on tv (blurred I'm sure) and thinking "who is this and can you show that on tv?" That video, that song, this band was big for the gay community and breaking down barriers, even if censors and straights were upset with some of what they were doing. Still, to me, it's average music. A more majestic sound than other synth-pop, so unique but still average.
The first track, "Being Boring," serves as a strong opener. The song reflects on the passing of time and the loss of youthful recklessness. While it has a somewhat melancholic tone, it also carries an element of hope. The lyrics evoke memories of the past and highlight the changes that come with life. The soft, atmospheric music adds to the song's special quality. The rest of the album follows a similar theme. Compared to most other albums by Pet Shop Boys, 'Behaviour' is introspective and relatively modest. Chris Lowe adopts a less energetic approach to his electronics, favoring languid beats and the analog synthesizers provided by German producer Harold Faltermeyer. Neil Tennant's vocal delivery is also less cool and detached than usual. There has often been debate about the quality of Tennant's singing, but personally, I find his voice quite pleasant, particularly in the sultry, languid sounds featured on *Behaviour*. One standout track can be found in the 'Further Listening' section: "Miserablism," a notable satire of Morrissey, made even more enjoyable by the contributions of Johnny Marr to this album. Overall, 'Behaviour' is an enjoyable album and is often regarded as Pet Shop Boys' best work. However, for me, it lacks the tension that many of their other albums possess.
Pop, 1990 -> 3
I haven't heard much PSB beyond their big 80s singles so having the chance to hear a full thing by them is awesome! If one thing stands out with this one is maybe how it's more restraint and chill compared to some of the more big and dancey songs like West End Girls and Suburbia, this one is more lowkey while still being a nice synthpop thing. I'm not always a fan of when it slows down into more of a sophisti-pop thing but I think it's enjoyable nonetheless.
There are no indications that I should like this album. Dated soundscape, cheesy casios, annoying vocals and it all is kind of boring. Still, I find myself, not exactly enjoying, but more tolerating the album. So Hard is a good song, and there are only two songs I dislike, track 4 and 6. Well, I guess people change
Better than expected. Wasn't a fan of the vocalist but the chill synthwave sound was lovely.
Way better than it has any right to be, for the style of music it is Best Song: How Can You Expect to be Taken Seriously Rating: 6.5/10 Stars: 3/5
I actually really liked it- it was very pleasant music to listen to, if I’m ever tired of my own music.
80's synth pop
I like the vibe of the music
not a bad little electro dance pop, blue eyed soul album. liked it more than I thought I would. 3 stars
Sad synths and bittersweet beats. Its glossy and polished, but full of pathos. The comedown after the after-party, a self indulgent apocalyptic disco. Perfect for when you want to cry but are being forced to dance. Favorites: the end of the world, being boring
I didn’t think there was anything particularly amazing in it, but it was good pleasant, light music for the background
This was a really fun album to listen through. Great beats throughout and the song had a cohesive feeling that made the whole album great as something to listen through in order. I can definitely see myself putting this on while reading when its dark or stormy outside.
This was a pretty little synth pop gem. I prefer the other Pet Shop Boys album that I have listened to so far, it was a little sassier and groovier than this one.
They sound like a proto-Postal Service, which is a mixed bag. I can't help but compare them and find the Pet Shop Boys inferior, but this also came out a dozen years earlier. I can clearly hear the influence of 80's pop/new wave which is almost always a turn-off for me, but I didn't hate this. I can't tell if this one should gain or lose points for the album cover. It looks real dumb, but if that was intentional then I love it. If this was an honest attempt at "art" or something serious then I hate it. Anyway, I'll never listen to it again, but I thank these guys for their service. 3.2
Would give 3.5 stars if possible
okay but not their best!
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Not what I expected tbh. Really solid album with some chill vibes, enjoyed it more than I thought. I don’t know a whole lot about the Pet Shop Boys and this wasn’t what I’d associate with them!
Subdued, a little boring
Some not-overly-serious, fun synthpop, whose 49 minutes flew by. There’s a general air of late-80s British gloom, even if this was released at the turn of the decade. The Pet Shop Boys seem to skirt the line that I despise crossing, that between tremendous British music, and seriously grating British music. You know who you are, Liam Gallagher, Alex Turner, Damon Albarn, et cetera. Maybe it’s because my mother’s a big fan. Maybe it’s because Neil Tennant’s subdued, slightly operatic vocals are so easy on the ears, maybe it’s none of that at all. All I know for sure is that Behaviour is enjoyable, perhaps surprisingly so.
Overall: 6/10 There's some good songs on this one, but I didn't really love it. The atmosphere is great, probably the best thing about it. I think it's the vocals that keep me from liking it more, he's kind of whiney. Not a terrible album but not great either. Fav Song: Being Boring Least Fav Song: Nervously
I have to admit that I thought that I had a form of understanding of what Pet Shop Boys sounded like, but this album didn't sound like that at all. I actually enjoyed that and found the difference interesting but I probably won't remember to return to this, so in that sense the album didn't leave a big impression Standouts How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously? Nervously 3/5
I remember their giant debut album much more than I do this one. I lost interest in them by 1990 so this was all new to me even though I remember the album coming out. "Being Boring" has 14M listens & "So Hard" has 8M but neither was a mainstream radio hit from what I remember and I was deejaying at the time. "To Face The Truth" turned out to be my favorite track. I enjoyed "How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously" & "The End Of The World" as well. On the flip side there were a few complete throw away tracks. It was what I would expect and I liked the sound and their groove, more modern and leaning towards techno leaning sound than their post-new wave sound on the first few albums. Not sure this was worthy of the Top 1001 even though I did enjoy it. It has no hits, not sure of what influence it had on down tempo electronic pop music, no longevity and only modest listening since it's release in 1990. I give it 3 solid stars though.
"Being Boring" is good, but I'm not sure if PSB are that much of an album band really. I'm always trying to listen out for their biggest (and best) songs, but I never hear them.
I don’t mind the pet shop boys but I think this album was lacking an “hook” by way of a hit.
A tricky one. On the whole I like the Pet Shop Boys. If there was a three and a half stars I think it would get that. Being Boring is a hit, was really taken by To Face The Truth, The End Of The World and Jealousy. Understand it's a darker and introspective album and I think if I had a more complete knowledge of their entire catalogue I can see it being one of those records that stands out because it's different. But without that it feels like something I can't get fully. Who knows with time. Very clever lyrics
PSB is the best British synth-pop duo of all time. That's a specific category, but - props.
I think I’ve been the biggest Pet Shop Boys apologist so far in this list but we do not need this much of them. This was close to indistinguishable from the other British synth pop we’ve had. Fine but not adding anything new. So Hard was good.
Better than most of the synth pop that came out during this era. Reminds me a little of Style Council.
This was pretty vibey compared to other albums I’ve heard by them. It felt more like background music too.
Decent.
There is nothing really wrong with this collection, but then there is little to get you out of your seat. But then maybe this is the point and there were a decade ahead of when their audience would slow down. These are a shuffle, ideal for a slumber. A long way from their bouncy disco pure pop.
Behaviour is my 2nd Pet Shop Boys album. First was Very (1993), when it was warm out, and also I had a different job and lived in a different house. What I'm trying to say is that it's been a while :0 I didn't hear much PSB growing up, although I really adore their over-the-top version of the ballad "Always on My Mind" It can't be a coincidence that I started thinking about Angelo Badalamenti's score of Mullholland Drive today, only to find he worked on two tracks on this album. Some really nice tracks, and much like its successor Very, takes some dramatic and emotional turns. There’s a kind of soporific, 80s romanticism that covers almost every track, yet there’s also plenty of odd synth noises that keep the production from being too smooth. Not saying it’s better or worse than Very, but I will say the slower nature made it harder to warm to. Perhaps revisiting it later on, say on a rainy summer evening, will glean even better results. January 22, 2025 HL: “Being Boring”, "To Face the Truth", "So Hard", “The End of the World”
Favourite songs: How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously?, So Hard, The End of the World, Being Boring Least favourite songs: Only the Wind 3/5
Dramatic synth pop Highlights: "Being Boring" (lush soundscape, long intro with wah wah, bass pops, and percussive hits, diva-ish vocals), "To Face the Truth" (reminds me of a George Michael ballad circa Faith with not-as-good vocals), "The End of the World" (pretty typical late 80s/early 90s dance music, but solidly done) Notable: "How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously" (bitchy dis track), "So Hard" (more like "So Cheesy" with the overabundance of sound effects), "Nervously" (sounds like a showtune in vocals delivery and lyrics)
Correcto
I'm not very familiar with the Pet Shop Boys and oddly enough, I've gotten two of their albums this week. I've gone out of order so that I could start with the earlier album, "Actually". In contract, "Behaviour" doesn't have of the handful of PSB songs I knew, but it does display a more mature sound that I was expecting. There's an intense calmness to it that I really hear in songs like "This Must Be the Place I Waited Years to Leave", which is the best track in my opinion. There's more seriousness and orchestration in songs like "My October Symphony" and "Jealousy". If I'm honest though, it hasn't hit me in quite the same way as "Actually", at least so far. It may be one to revisit in the future, but on first exposure, it's a respectable 3 stars.
Surely there are more essential Pet Shop Boys albums.
Really great atmospheric synth/instrumental work. The vocals sometimes take away from the music but I enjoyed a lot of it
++: To Face the Truth, My October Symphony +: Being Boring, How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously?, Only the Wind, So Hard, Nervously, Jealously +-: This Must Be the Place I Waited Years to Leave, The End of the World 6,4/10
Being Boring So Hard Jealousy
This was a fun album. Makes me want to time travel to 80s London
The 80s holding on for dear life at the brink of early 90s.
This was really cool and moody. Definitely a consistent album, but there aren’t any standouts.
I listened to this while doing menial, life organizing computer tasks. It did an excellent job of filling the silence. How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously was the only standout track, but I enjoyed having everything else wash over me too. Album cover: (B)
I'm enjoying the song "How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously." The whole album so far has had some underlying Phil Collins / Genesis energy. The vocals on "Nervously" sound like Death Cab For Cutie. This album is nice but isn't really my jam. It's an enjoyable relaxing synthy album. The songs mostly blended together. 6/10
More than expected
Just not dancey enough for the PSBs... I don't really listen to them for the sentimentality, I listen for the hooks and the grooves. 5/10
It was alright to me. Definitely better with headphones! Wonder how it sounded in the context of its release year almost 35 years ago now. Some musical tropes that were fresh for this may be "boring" or "played out" now.
# Album Name: Behaviour # Artist: PSB # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: A very mellow album from the pet shop boys. There were no stand out tracks for me. It was just an OK album. Didnt hate it, certainly didnt love it. # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No.
Very cool. Synthpop and synthwave inspired a multitude of genres I appreciate and love today. But you know the saying "don't meet your heros"? Thats kinda how I feel about this album. Wasn't worth it to me to find what inspired said music i like already in this genre. Worthy of 3 stars for its unique, inspirational and pop tonalities. But, the two extra stars gotta be reserved for music that is undeniably good. This isn't it, just unique.
Noice, heard better by them though
No. 296/1001 Being Boring 4/5 This Must Be the Place 4/5 To Face the Truth 3/5 How Can You Expect 4/5 Only the Wind 3/5 My October Symphony 4/5 So Hard 3/5 Nervously 3/5 The End of the World 3/5 Jealousy 3/5 Average: 3,4 I actually didn’t really like the Pet Shop Boys before listening to this record. But this was surprisingly good.
I’ve had one other PSB album on the project and didn’t care for it much; this one was better in my opinion, although still not my cup of tea. I tended to enjoy the music more than the vocals. Added ‘So Hard’ to my playlist, I also liked ‘Jealousy’. 3/5
I like the PSB but wasn’t familiar with any of these songs. It’s ok if not a bit repetitive.
3.5/5
It's a good job they put the big single up front because, apart from that, it sounds exactly like any of the other umpteen billion albums PSB have released.
Listening to this album feels very sophisticated. But also really fun. I like it.
A bit samey but still enjoyed, definitely inspired a lot of pop music
More synthpop. Some tunes are great, some not so. There's nothing any different here from their other albums. Again, another group only needed one album on the list. Best Tracks: Being Boring; This Must Be The Place I Waited Years To Leave; So Hard
It's not completely my thing but I must admit there are some great vibes on this. Not sure how much of this is an acquired taste and how much I just need to adapt to the vibes. Synths are very cool though. Best Track: Jealousy Worst Track: Only The Wind
Sometimes I listen to this album and it's great and sometimes it's genuinely the most boring thing I've ever heard. Best Song: So Hard Worst Song: Nervously
Sorry to say but for me the first and fourth tracks say it all.
Deram um desacelerada nos anos 90 e criaram um clima que não chega a ser de trip hop. Abre com hit e segue no clima.
"synth pop",lots of rythym-ey stuff
A pleasant enough album to listen to. Decent songs. Still not convinced Pet Shop Boys should have more than one recording on this list.
Too contrived, too camp, very difficult to take seriously.
Like a more Twin Peaks-esque, more mellow Depeche Mode. I just got another Pet Shop Boys from this generator literally a week or two before this but it was a lot more kitschy than this. And this is plenty kitsch and camp too, because its still the Pet Shop Boys, but this takes itself somewhat more seriously and feels more "adult" in like an '80s corporate elevator music way. It's pretty cool but it gets monotonous.
quando ho letto che era musica elettronica sono un attimo rabbrividita, considerato quanto amo questo genere musicale, ma in verità è caruccio! sono piacevolmente sorpresa ma ciononostante non si superano le tre stelle
This was enjoyable enough. It’s not one I’ll probably return to but I don’t regret hearing it.
frekar gott og fágað rafpopp. hrifinn, aftur. 3,5.
The synth is very reminiscent of Depeche Mode. This vibe just feels like ‘wealthy adolescents dancing languidly to shake off their angst and ennui’
So much meh.
One tries one's best to open to this, but comes away mostly cold. It's lush and lavish and occasionally lovely, and there are some moments ("October Symphony" and "This Must Be the Place"), that put one in the mind of Paul Hardcastle at his best. Ultimately, however, the extra cheesy synths (see "So Hard"), the vocals sounding like too much Liberace and the sheer overdone schlockery/schmaltzery (some would say "camp" one realizes) of it all are more than can one bear or credit.
Damn....Pet Shop Boys just have such a good combination of dance beats, synth layers and then Neal Tennant has such a unique voice. 'This Must Be the Place I Waited Years To Leave' is great one. 'Jealousy' is another melancholy anthem that I remember listening to as a teen. 'Being Boring' is another favorite. Other parts of the album don't flow as well as the other songs,.but altogether a decent album.
Quite enjoyed it 7/10
najo azért mindennek van határa. 🤣 az elején tetszett, de meguntam a közepére nagyon.
Smooth 80s synth pop
3-
Ok, this is the 3rd Pet Shop Boys album that has been generated and I’ve tried but it’s just not clicking for me. I like chill synth music and I did appreciate the sounds on Behaviour the most of their 3 albums that I’ve listened to, I just haven’t been able to get past the vocals. I was vibing pretty well to this album on the first track the vocals kick in at the 2min mark. There’s something flat and annoying about their voices and they can’t help that but I can’t help it either. Great dreamy synth sounds here though. 3 stars
Huh, I swear I've heard 'Being Boring' somewhere before. Anyway, I like it. Synth can be hit or miss for me, but this was pleasant.
pretty good. Better than I thought it would be going in. First track is great, but So Hard is so hard.
Reminds me a lot of Depeche Mode
a decent enough synth-pop album. this one did not really resonate with me a whole lot. like the production was fine, the instrumentation here is fine. the lyrics didn't really land with me and for my second foray into pet shop boys' music, i can't say i super love the style of the vocalist. that's not to say the sum of all this album's parts are bad, but just really unremarkable to me.
Sounds fairly similar to alternative songs coming out today. Similar vibes but with more tech drum machine sounds instead of modern production.
Being Boring is a great track. Rest ok 3/5
album gives the 80s ilayaraaja disco vibes. Favorite track: how can you expect to be taken seriously other picks: this must be the place, october symphony
3.5
This was pretty innocuous, was hoping for some more 80s bangers but it was surprisingly chill
Very Pet Shop Boys but I wasn’t familiar with any of the songs. This site really needs half points or I need to stop reserving 5 for albums I can’t stop listening too… this would be 3.5.
Eh, another album with some nice songs but ultimately to dated sounding for me
I gave Actually a 5, this wasn't a hit for me ( hello, controversial artist). This was perhaps a more grown sound. Doesn't mean I have to love it.
Surprisingly pleasant, but nothing to rave over. Wouldn't buy it, but it's got to be worth a 3.
This two are excellent live, and they played one of my favourites, 'So Hard'. This was a good change in direction at the time for PSB, it seemed like they were trying to go a bit moodier and maybe dancier. It's pretty good and worth 3 stars at the very least.
Like most Pet Shop Boys albums, I like a handful of songs a lot but the rest is kind of meh. I think my favorite song off of this album is So Hard. It's a jam. Some of these were too slow and weepy for me though.
3.75
3.3 1x catch up 10 /10
Not really my style and at times a bit repetitive and fading into the background. With that said, I enjoyed it more than I initially thought I would. Probably not something I'll come back to, but not bad music.
Bit dull but plesent enough
Maybe I’m just Being Boring, but this one was So Hard to listen to today. Was It Worth It? Idk.
meh
It's very unexpected for a Pet Shop Boys album. Altough honestly, I don't know if I know what I expected from Pet Shop Boys, even after 2 or 3 albums from them on the 1001 list. I can say that I liked it, even though it was not so remarkable.
Mixed up The Pet Shop Boys with The Beach Boys, so when I hit play on Behaviour it was a bit of a shock - but not necessarily an unwelcome one. The beach rock vibes I was expecting when I hit play, turned into some neat synth pop, something that was welcome. A little slow in places, but feels like it would've been a hit in some of the club scene. Best: So Hard Worst: To Face The Truth
Another one I really wanted to like but just couldn't get into. The Wikipedia article quotes one of the band members as saying they tried to make this album have fewer of the 'annoying' qualities their music usually had (his words, not mine) — but I don't think they succeeded. Pet Shop Boys are one of those bands that tends to take new wave and other 80s sounds to the logical absurd to the point where it's all just too much. It's at times too cheesy and twee, at times too boring, and at times too overloaded with the popular electronic trends of the day. Vox did a video about the history of the orchestra hit and how it became a musical stereotype, and the accompanying playlist they made to showcase songs with egregious use of the sound has a Pet Shop Boys track on it. As egregious as that song is (unfortunately I can't remember the name at the moment), there's actually a WORSE one on this album — So Hard. Indeed, it goes *so hard* on the orchestra hits. I can hear the obvious influence album this band had on one of my favorite bands of all time — Savage Garden — so I should like this. But I just can't quite get there. It's too musical theater/mashing buttons on the Casio presets for me. It's like if Depeche Mode and Soft Cell formed a super group, but not in a great way. 3.5/5 — it's not a terrible album, but it's not something I want to listen to very often, if at all.
Pet Shop Boys plejer at svinge en større pisk. Her bliver de ofte apatiske i udtrykket.
I was taken in by the very mellow vibe of this, though I didn't walk away humming it. I do love the production.
Favourite song - Only the wind
Nope. Bands like this is why I took up listening to Metal in the 80s. Not terrible just boring
meh
Smart, bittersweet, packed with tunes and sharp lyrics, often with the feeling that Neil Tennant has one eyebrow raised.
Like a lot more than not, but don't love.
3/5 - ehhhhhhhhhhhh
I’m a definite fan of the Pet Shop Boys but this is my least favourite of their first few albums. They’re still intelligent and witty and catchy but Please or Disco were more charged for me. At their worst though they still produce fantastic songs. Their vibe is sublime. I recently watched a documentary about their latest album and tour… they have such an enviable dynamic and know how to deliver!
I was kind of messing with some of the production. But early pop can’t help from being boring to me. No hate. All love.
Just another album, nothing spectacular but not terrible. I liked "To Face The Truth"
🎧Decent pop, nothing to write home about. Opener “Being Boring” is excellent.
It's all quite mellow. Works well as background music. Exactly what I expected from the Pet Shop Boys. Nothing surprising, nothing outstanding, nothing really bad. The perfect example of a "don't-care-3-star" album.
It’s ok
Nice and chill. Very little hype.
I was expecting an album of catchy dance tunes, but this isn't that at all. It's subdued with a melancholy vibe. I really like the way the lyrics tell a story. My biggest gripe is that if you're going for sophisticated, you can't have some of it sound like the demo setting on a crappy keyboard.
Face the Truth and October Symphony are really good. 3.5
I enjoyed the uptempo tracks but not the broody stuff as much.
Die Grossmeister des elektronischen Pops, mal seichter mal besser. Mit der Masse der Songs haben sie auch ein paar Highlights hervorgebracht
Solid album, easy to listen to. 6/10
Starts so strong with Being Boring! Lets off a little from there but still a solid album. It is The Pet Shop Boys, after all!!!
very chill mix between 80s synth and like moby - songs take a while to develop but I like the potential for sample
Tycker So Hard är skivans bästa låt.
I liked the parts that didn’t feel like real sappy stuff.
It was fine. No big surprises, nothing standing out. Just a very 80s album that came out in the 90s.
