Reviews (page 2 of 7)

What a lovely album. I really enjoyed this vibe. It definitely had a 90's feel to it, but as a child of the 90's that was not unwelcome.

I’ve listened to so much MJ Lenderman, Waxahatchee and Wednesday in the last year… feel like this influenced them all. Enjoyed it.

One of the best country albums of all time, one of the best singer songwriter albums of all time, one of the best female albums of all time, can't say enough about how great this is.

I bloody loved this album, I’d heard of Lucinda but not played anything by her - Amazing!

I really liked this album. It hits themes like love and loss and nostalgia and longing beautifully. Williams sings her stories in a way that is both intensely personal but also relatable and inviting.

Good find, I thought this album was really good... And I noticed that many people refer to it as country! So, yes, surprisingly (if this fits into the country genre!), I'm enjoying some country songs, who would have thought? :-D

Americana, folk, rock, and country all put in a blender and the results poured out over a book of poetry.

Love Lucinda!

This music is in my blood. People have survived more. Brick by brick, headlights. FIVE!

Whenever I listen to this album, part of me feels a little self-conscious that some of the tracks are a little too conventional in structure or too poppy -- some of the choruses are just repeating the titles, right? Maybe I love this album because I discovered it at the right time in college when my mind was particularly open to it rather than for its intrinsic virtues? But then her voice grabs me, and the storytelling opens me up, and the band demonstrates its versatility and keen sense of when to go big and when less is more. And for my money there's not a truly weak song on here; it's a remarkably consistent and rich album. These songs all feel very personal, yet they also evoke and critique an American myth of the purity and simplicity of Southern life that resonates with the myth if small town life I grew up with. At the end of the day, I find this album unimpeachable, and I'm glad to have an excuse to hand out another 5.

The album where I and a lot of people fell in love with Lucinda Williams. The production is a little dated but the songs hit like a target shooter. Plus if you have feelings for Louisiana, specifically if you are the rare bird with warm feelings for Baton Rouge, it is particularly poignant.

Lucinda Williams is a national treasure, a songwriter storyteller with a poet’s eye for detail and that uniquely woozy, world-wary vocal delivery. Her music evokes barrooms with jukeboxes, neon beer signs and unvarnished, dusty wood floors worn down from people dancing in cowboy boots. She is one of the leading lights saving country music from its own worst Nashville impulses, and although I wish the production was a little less polished, it doesn’t detract from the quality of songs like “Drunken Angel” or “Metal Firecracker.”

A towering album. I'd heard various songs before, but never the full thing. The 1001 Albums Generator has my eternal gratitude for introducing me to this album specifically. Incredible, varied, emotional, fun. A true achievement.

Going on decades, aging like a fine bourbon or a majestic bald cypress by the bayou. Every song is a spark for the southern soul. Nothing weak here, full stop. The standout for me; Lake Charles. Did an Angel whisper in your ear? And hold you close, take away your fear? In those long, last moments. Damn… one beautiful tribute! A heavyweight in a class of her own. God Bless Lucinda Williams!

Fantastic

Feels like a blueprint for half of the modern music that I like that.

This album really grew on me after a few listens. Favourie tracks, concrete and barbed wire, and 2 kool 2 be 4-gotten

Really enjoyable

Really good album. Had heard of her but had no idea how good her music was.

Loved it

Off the cuff remark: I was introduced to Lucinda Williams and this album on its release, by Uncut and it was an instant love. Perhaps it was the timing but gorgeous vocals, some lovely lyrical bits and pieces that really paint a sense of place and I was hooked for life. Standout track: every track is great, title track particularly good but could choose any at a different moment. Revisit?: a regularly played album, had to listen to it twice through before even considering anything else this time round

Storytelling perfection without the worst instrument ever invented the steel guitar. This is country I can enjoy

A very good album from start to finish. 5 stars or A-.

First listen

I've never been a big fan of this genre, but hearing Lucinda Williams and this album for the first time has definitely given me a new appreciation for it. The songs on this album are so catchy and extremely easy to throw on in the background of your day. I've had the chance to listen to this album multiple times after my first listen and many songs are still on repeat. The only song I don't like is Concrete and Barbed Wire which feels a bit too country to me in a bad way. If I had to pick 3 of my favorite songs from this album it would be Drunken Angel, Metal Firecracker, and Still I Long For Your Kiss. Other honorable mentions are Jackson, Right In Time, and Car Wheels On a Gravel Road.

I’ve never heard this album before and feel like I really missed out.

I discovered this too late in life. Love it so much. She is so wonderful. 5*

Favorites: Right in Time Car Wheels On A Gravel Road Drunken Angel Concrete and Barbed Wire Lake Charles Can't Let Go (very bluesy and catchy!) Metal Firecracker Greenville Still I Long For Your Kiss Joy (mostly because of the instrumental parts) Jackson Mellow. Easy listening. Thoughtful lyrics about Williams’ lovers and Southern cities. Wonderfully unabashed Americana blues.

beautiful!

Always found her a bit too ‘country’ before but this album is stunning. What a voice (recorded live) and such great songs. I enjoyed the guitar playing aswell and I will keep coming back to this album.

Persoonlijke favoriet, vijf sterren!

Great album

Stunning album by an incredible artist. Many coming through the alt-country current structure owe a debt to her.

You can't hear pictures.

Sometimes I wonder if listening to all these albums is worth it, but then I get gems like these and I know that opening my mind and trying new things is always, always worth it. Oh my god. There's just something so relatable to CWOAGR, even though I am the perfect opposite of a small town Southern american broken-hearted lady - I guess some experiences are truly shared amongst all women, such as longing for home and mourning the loss of girlhood. Anyways. I LOVE FOLK COUNTRY

Amazingly constructed breakup album

Really interesting country/rock/pop style album. Really like the sound and voice.

Great Americana album

The poet's daughter crams this full of great writing. A winner.

Unexpectedly brilliant

This ain't no two star record. It's in fact one of the greatest country albums of all time. Half or more of it is happily seared in my brain.

This is Nashville country done right. First 2 songs are pure brilliance. It's a niggle, but I'd have wished for a better mix. The drums are just too heavy throwing it out of balance. Playing is great, it was all in the post mixing. Won't impact my stars. This is a 5 through and through. Can't Let Go is still buzzing in my ears.

Raw, at times. Full of pathos, much fo the time. Real, all the time. Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is what country music should be - raw, pathos, and real. Alas, most is not but thank goodness for Lucinda. These are stories that tug at the heart, but there is enough joy to keep the listener from drowning in dispair. Her gravelly voice perfectly fits the stories and her band is just what this type of music needs.

Really liked this. Good meaningful story telling lyrics which is always the thing with country music. Good production, good overall sound, chilled and laid back. If I am gaining anything from this site, it's a growing appreciation for country music

A bittersweet explanation of America in the 21st century. Where are we headed and what's with this handbasket??

A beautiful album. Incredible songs, well performed, and no filler. I haven’t listened to this album much, but I can understand why it’s held in such high esteem by artists I love. Lucinda is a treasure.

So many amazing songs. One of the best albums across all genre.

This is how modern country should sound. It is not slick, as so much '90s and beyond country is, no over-produced pop sheen. It is well played and sounds like a real band with Lucinda Williams's world-weary voice sitting over dobros and fiddles, americana, r&b influenced, earthy music.

All time classic. I’m a sucker for country/folk with female vocals, and this checks all the boxes. Amazing singing. Guitar playing that borders on late-90s Midwest emo. Every song is a stand out.

earlier i said you should use Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger to introduce your friend to country. i think that if that doesn't work, you should invariably use "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road". Lucinda isn't the most energetic or impressive singer in country, you might even hate her voice, but she's got the passion. in my opinion, passion's what matters in the genre. you can say whatever you want, sure, tell what ever story you have in your head, but do you mean it with your heart? i get the feeling Lucinda Williams does. this whole album makes me wanna sob at a bar.

This is the 33rd album I’m rating. I think I’ve seen the cover and heard about it but that was probably years ago in a dark alley. So I don’t know what to expect. Adding to my Playlist - Right in Time, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, 2 Kool 2 be 4-Gotten, Drunken Angel, Concrete and Barbed Wire, Lake Charles, Can’t Let Go, I Lost It, Metal Firecracker, Greenville, Still I Long for Your Kiss, Joy, and Jackson. Not Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Right in Time - This is good but I’m expecting that singing to get annoying. Drunken Angel - I’m sorry I said that this singing is incredible. Weirdly this made me smile but it’s just too good. Can’t Let Go - I hate to agree with the Grammys but this is great and the best song on the album. Still I Long for Your Kiss - Fantastic and a contender for best song on the album. Probably best song on the album. Joy - This album just gets better and better. This is definitely a contender for best song. All in all I liked 13/13 songs. If not for this list I might not’ve ever listened to this album. This is a top 10 album of all time for me maybe even top 5 but either way I love this album. Fuck it I’m putting it top 5. It is just so good.

Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is a charmingly gruff affair, a ceaselessly great showcase for Lucinda Williams as she touts out tales of travel and love either fulfilled, lost or misplaced. There is nary a wasted note on here and is worthy of a continued listen.

One of my all time favourites. Chill country folk. Americana. Very melancholy. Voice can be a bit grating at times. But sets an immaculate mood.

Lucinda Williams my beloved

Probably the best country rock that I've listened to. The front half of this is banger after banger and when she opens up with ballads midway through it makes them even more impactful. The imagery and lyricism is excellent but the hooks and instrumentation are great and fit right in. This album feels deeply personal and Williams puts so much of herself into the album. The closing tracks are slower and moodier but the album pacing works towards it and gets you invested earlier. To me this is exactly what country can be. It has elements of indie and rock but this softer side has a lot to offer too. It's really a 4 star album but I keep coming back to it and it's just too enjoyable.

Classic Americana performed flawlessly. This album evokes such a sense of nostalgia. Clean, simple, timeless. Love this entire album, but favorites are Right In Time, Can't Let Go and Joy.

I'm a little shocked at how much of a banger this album is. Figured at nearly an hour of country there'd be some lull but all these songs are great!

This is one of the records that set me on the Americana path. It checks all the boxes, the songs, the singing, musicians, the attention to detail in the production is incredible. Easily in my top 100 records. Also includes maybe the greatest song ever about female masturbation

I'm sure I've heard Lucinda before, but this is my first time knowingly listening to her. I think this is stellar. This type of 70's Laurel Canyon Americana is all right by me and it's about as Country as I want to get. There's a Neil Young/Sheryl Crow/Tom Waits vocal delivery in some melodies that I find really enjoyable. This album is a find. Sidenote; I try to only read 5 star reviews. It's nice to read how these albums have had a positive impact on peoples lives. Music is great.

Had this record as a safe voice when it was windy outside. Fantastic songs.

Best bit have less country and western

Melding Miranda Lambert and Susan Cowsill with her own unique style.

incredible mixing. instruments in perfect balance, full of space.

Loved it!!!

Kakvo jebeno remek djelo naslovna stvar je savršenstvo

Love Lucinda. Gritty Americana.

Love Lucinda!

Love me some Lucinda, and this is absolutely the album to pick. Roots, country, blues and folk blended together perfectly with her trademark lyricism while escaping the trappings of so many now-dated sounding 90s albums.

Really nice music here that just feels good to listen to. I’m torn between a 4 and a 5, but it has been growing on me as I listen so I’ll round up. I do like her self titled album more though. Fave songs: Can’t Let Go, Still I Long For Your Kiss (awesome guitar solo) Jackson. Glad to hear something like this on the list.

Very nice music

I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did, considering I wasn’t very positive about it when I first heard it. But, outside of one glaring exception (‘Joy’ is incredibly stupid), the songs are all great. It keeps an incredible consistency in being good, and the songs are enjoyable with good lyrics. Really, I don’t completely know why I’m rating it so high, but I really enjoy it.

LOVE IT

Almost as amazing as her movie scores of star wars and Harry Potter 2

Refined songs with extraordinary vocals and just the right amount of edges.

It was a few years after-the-fact when I first listened to this one but it deserves every single bit of praise it gets. An all-timer.

Yeah, she’s awesome!

It's great. My name is Dan. I'M STEALING OTHER DANS account. - Other Dan

All round great recrod

Stunning

"Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" is the fifth studio album from American singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams. The style of music is a mixture of country, pop, blues and folk and really one the albums that began and popularized the Americana/alt country genre. Yeah, when you begin a genre that's a pretty big thing and this album is worthy of that. There are guest appearances by Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris and were multiple producers in Earle, Roy Brittan, Ray Kennedy and Lucinda herself. A good description of the album are themes of heartbreak, love and losing formers lovers and friends with imagery of traveling through/in cities in the US South. The album won the 1998 Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album and Village Voice voted it the best 1998 album. Well deserved. A twangy guitar and Lucinda's exhausted voice begins "Right in Time." A great melody and pretty much a perfect sounding pop song. About her losing someone that you thought was perfect for you and, then, ummm, about enjoying yourself thinking about him. Lucinda adds some urgency in her voice to "Drunken Angels." Boy, the layered guitar production is great on this album. A more rock song. The song is about musician Blaze Foley who was shot by his friend's son in a drunken fight. The guitars give "Can't Let Go" a jamming, grinding feel. Great slide guitar and guitar solo. A guy left her and she can't forget about him. "Still I Long for Your Kiss" has a country-rock vibe. Some more great layered guitars and solos. Another song about not wanting to let someone go. Lucinda gives a rap singing style to "Joy" with bluesy guitars and a slide guitar. She traveling from town to town and about a former lover. The album concludes with the soulful/gospel-esque ballad "Jackson." She's traveling from Lafayette to Baton Rouge to Jackson trying to convince herself she won't miss her boyfriend. The album sounded absolutely great not aging since 1998. The production is fantastic and the album just moves along. Multiple styles heard but really in its own category. A must listen.

Song after song I thought Oh, this is a good one!

All good songs, and even a couple hits

I got this album on release. As soon as I heard her lyrics refer to the "Drunken Angel" as a "derelict in duck tape shoes", it easily became my favourite album I bought in years and one of my ATF country albums. She was loaded with angst at the time she wrote this and poured her soul into it. The subsequent albums she made (that I've heard) haven't come close to this gem. I guess she became happier. Good for her.

A good album, reminds me of Tori Amos (or is it the other way round) a bit, or even a female Steve Forbert maybe? Some good tunes though and lyrically very strong I think.

Great country album, a benchmark for the genre.

Eetswa

Liker spesielt godt Joy, Drunken Angel, car wheels...

A classic, truly.

Really good album, with a smooth voice and country/folk/rock tunes

That was really quite excellent. Americana that I had missed.

Classic Americana.

Sheryl Crow vibes, great mellow listen. Will explore artist more.

This is my jam. Great voice, story-driven songs...love it.

Heard lots of good things about this, it did not disappoint. Didn’t love the whole album but there were a lot of highlights for me, my favorites were the title track, Concrete And Barbed Wire, and Joy. I really like Lucinda Williams as a singer, she’s not super polished and has a lot of personality. Really enjoyed these arrangements.

Knew the title track, wasn’t that thrilled by it. The album was a bit of a revelation, “oh, this is why people love her!”: warm, soulful, paints pictures, tells stories.

The title cut is an all time tune for me. Joy and Can't Let Go are amazing. An A album and probably a 4.75.

I dig her sound, especially on, “Can’t Let Go,” and, “Joy.” But the accent gets a little much. Just the same, I’m going to round up from 3.5* for the sheer fact this is 100% better than any pop-country, and that should be rewarded.

Pretty strong country album, I loved it, probably deserves a 3.5 but im gonna give it a "will-relisten" bonus. I can see her influence on many of my favorite contemporary americana/C&W artists. 4/5

so far really enjoying it - I like the blend of country and folk kind of reminds me of Stevie Knicks. I think I would definitely listen to this album again.

Comfortable, the music and the lyrics aren't really *amazing* in any way but it somehow feels very "balanced," like there's not really any *great* moments but the whole album sounds so solidly good (and with enough variety) that I didn't ever get particularly sick of it. Infact... I think it's cool Absolute balance balances absolutely

Rating: 5.0/5 Short Review: Dusty, lived-in, and heartbreakingly real. Every song feels like it has dirt under its fingernails and a story behind it. One of the greatest Americana albums ever made. Favorite Track: “Drunken Angel” Beautiful, sad, and full of affection for flawed people.

I had heard the title track and Can’t Let Go previously, but I never explored the rest of the album. There are some fantastic alt-country songs on this record. My two favorites are Concrete and Barbed Wire, and Metal Firecracker.

Great album. Need to listen again. We'll possibly raise to a 5

Folk laulut uppoaa meikäläiseen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Goes hard.

really pleasant time. trend to watch in the 1001 albums project: me adding a song to my playlist as the album is winding down and then getting knocked out by a wonderful closing track!

I knew of Lucinda Williams, but before hearing this album I probably couldn’t have picked her out of a lineup or named one of her songs. Car Wheels on a Gravel Road feels like the kind of record best played loud while speeding down a country road in a cherry-red 1967 Ford Mustang convertible. That was the first image that came to mind the moment I put it on. I may irritate some longtime fans by saying this—especially since I’m not deeply familiar with the rest of her catalog—but on first listen, Williams sounds like a blend of Sheryl Crow and Tom Petty. There’s a little rock and roll, a little country, a little Americana, and a healthy dose of Southern rock. Whatever label you want to put on it, this album wears it exceptionally well.

country rock at its most sensual. Lucinda Williams sings of love and longing over some serene instrumental backing (including organ and accordion from the E Street Band's own Roy Bittan!). her words and her weathered singing voice carry a lifetime of experience within them. the guitar work is delicate, tasteful and immaculately well-produced (thank you Steve Earle). does it need to be 50+ minutes? I dunno. but the highs are super high. strong 7/10.

I have been meaning to listen to this for years and finally got around to it. Honestly, its better than my expectations.

I was completely unfamiliar with this, but liked it on the whole. It has a nice country rock sound, with the title track and I Lost It standouts in giving a more forceful sound to a genre that can become a bit sleepy. The middle section did lose my interest a bit, but still good enough for 4*.

Going into this, I'd only heard the excellent title track, so was curious to see if the rest of the album lived up to that quality. For the most part, it does. It's great country-tinged rock throughout. Although the second half didn't grab me as much as the start, it ends strongly with the reflective, acoustic number 'Jackson.'

I am loving “Can’t let go”

Really great, I love her voice, I few alright songs stop this from. Being a 5* but the standouts really standout

Great album! Another artist I haven't listened to enough. The first artist I thought of when I initially heard her was Steve Earle. And, of course, he's on the album. Love this sort of Americana/heartland zeitgeist. I'll listen to her further.

Was she drunk while singing "Drunken Angel"? I don't love her voice if I'm being completely honestly. It's a bit too phlegmy for me to say that it's any good. Yeah, I don't like her voice. It's got some of the cliche country twang, that isn't too bad, but there's something else going on that is really abrasive to me. It's like she's very nonchalant with her voice, and it comes off as lazy. It's a shame that I dislike her voice so much, because the rest of the music is really great. All of the non-drum instruments fit perfectly into the sound and style (not saying the drums aren't also very good, but they don't quite fit as nicely as the electric guitar, harmonica, etc.). Like all of the solos are really quite nice. It's so close to being an album that I would love, but it just misses that mark for me, almost entirely because of her vocals. It's just hard for me to really commit to listening when her voice makes me cringe so much. And it ends up being an album I wish I could rate higher. Favorite Song(s): Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, Lake Charles

Лучшие треки: right in time, car wheels on a gravel road

Lucinda is a good writer and performer. The next stage in women’s country after Linda Dolly and Emmy Lou etc and she holds up with them. In fact Emmy Lou provides what only she can on Greenville. It’s a crack lineup too - Steve Earle, Charlie Sexton, Roy Bittan (E street band). Yes she did edgier stuff but this works nicely. A great introduction to Lucinda. Chase up everything else she did.

Every song is enjoyable. But just enjoyable. You could have this on in the background all day and it will not distract in any way, either good or bad.

8.5/10

I tend to only listen to Lucinda Williams when I'm on a road trip, which makes a Pavlovian situation wherein I hear this album and feel like I'm on the road.

What a nice surprise to get this album in this collection! I know her voice puts a lot of people off, but thankfully I'm not one of those people, and I've listened to this album many times outside this project and always enjoyed the songs and the stories, although it's probably 2-4 songs too long overall. (I'm also struck by how much I associate this album with similar ones by Daniel Lanois and T-Bone Burnett.) My favorites are probably the title track, "Concrete and barbed wire", the very Steve-Earle-influenced "I lost it", and "Joy"; and the only real dud would probably be the strangely bitter "Greenville". I'm not entirely sure it deserves a full four stars, but I feel like this album is impressively solid and serves as a great stand-in for all of the very worthy acoustic/folk/alt-country/country-rock/Americana artists that sadly *aren't* here.

In the context of 1998, it's a great breath of fresh air. Thanks Lucinda.

Enjoyed this one. She’s pretty good! Easily digestible

She's quite good, even if the album title, track titles, and lyrics are very stereotypical country.

This was actually really good. The songs were interesting and I liked the vocals. 3.5 but let’s go 4.

Car Wheels On A Gravel Road was honestly a super nice surprise. This album having Texas blues in the styles section of this site is honestly so fitting because this is one of the most Texas albums i have ever heard which makes it odd that it wasn't actually recorded in Texas. The main thing i really liked about this album was how chill it was, it's honestly one really nice album to unwind and relax to after working an 8 and a half hour long shift at work which is what i did. Williams' vocals were really good here too with them just having that right amount of rasp to make it enjoyable. Not the best album but if you want to listen to some nice Texas sounding country music, there are worse ways to do it. Best Song: Car Wheels On A Gravel Road Worst Song: Drunken Angel

*1998. *I've never listened to Lucinda Williams, but she was a surprise hit for me. I'm not a country girl, but this felt bluegrass enough that I was here for it. *Car Wheels on a Gravel Road (the song) is a total earworm and kind of a banger. I've been randomly humming it for weeks since I first heard it here. *Lucinda has a cool voice - gravely but clear. I hope she transitions to rock one of these days. RATING - 7.5/10

You know... I didn't think I would grow to like this as much as I have. There's a radio station that plays a track or two from this album at least once per week. And I would have thought that familiarity would cause me to dislike it, but after a full listen, I think I like it even more. I'd probably veer toward a 3.5, but I'll go ahead and assign a 4. I'll listen again.

She gives me female John Prine vibes, really good singer songwriter, I go 4.5 in this one

More like this!!

Solid. I listened 3 times and I will keep listening

Mother 🧎🏼‍♀️

Great variety

A pleasant surprise. I spent two days listening to this album and although I don't like everything on it, I think there's a chance it's one of my favorite 80s/90s country albums (not a tough competition). Highlights: "Right in Time" and "Lake Charles."

This was a really nice album. I really like her voice.

I think I have this on vinyal, might have to go pop it on, this was a solid americana album.

Lovely.

I've listened to this multiple times over the years but I still don't quite understand the reputation this one has. It's a strong album and has multiple great songs but unfortunately at times it sounds like you could have heard it on the most mainstream radio station possible.

Another that gets better the more you hear it. Solid alt country with subtle detail and a unique voice.

This is a very well made record with a bunch of good songs that just aren't my personal taste.

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Can't Let Go is such a banger.

lovely album

This is my first real surprise with 60 albums reviewed in regards to being unexpectedly blown away. Phenomenal album in a genre of music that I usually don't choose to listen to.

Really loved this actually, one of the best new discoveries of the list. Her voice is so warm and rich, enhancing the fantastic storytelling. Suffers slightly from every-song-sounds-the-same syndrome, but that doesn't really take away from it - it's like being told the same story books when you're a kid, as long as they're told with heart and warmth, it doesn't really matter

A foot on the farm

This is a solid album.

Great vibe and consistently very good.

Something transcendent about this but I can't put my finger on it

Americana, alternative country, country rock.

Head of this album, but have not heard it. I like it, reminds me of WIlco, Steve Earle. Lyrics seem interesting. 3.5 rounded up Heard before? Some maybe Owned: No 47/190 (24%) Will I get: Maybe

My Rating 3.8. Great Album

Arte arte arte🩷

4.5⭐️/5 01.26.2026

This was great. Like a slightly more country Sheryl Crow. Very enjoyable.

Very nice album

Well recorded

A great road album.

If the Gin Blossoms had a female lead singer

I liked this a great deal more than I expected to, especially the second half.

I don't think I'd ever heard of Lucinda before, but this was solid stuff. 3.9

I liked the raspy country music today

An alt-country classic that really laid the groundwork for the sub-genre to take flight over the next decade. Gritty and tender at the same time, Car Wheels is just great.

Lucinda Williams is an interesting artist, and I will return to listen to her other bolded albums. A more authentic sounding Sheryl Crow.

A low to solid 4 for me, and a missing piece of the alt-country puzzle for me!

This was a surprise like. Really enjoyed the Americana country rock vibes.

Nice, authentic, uncorny country.

Chill country music Great vocals (raspy american female) Evening music Some really nice sliding guitar in some songs

Album #987 This is country rock, good country rock. She does this thing where she intentionally sings off-key sometimes, but it's more quirky than annoying. I didn't really dislike anything here. Favorite tracks: Title track and Jackson

Lucinda sounds like a Country version of Sheryl Crow, though I’d venture to guess that Sheryl was probably ripping Lucinda off, particularly on her Country-ish tunes. These songs are super catchy. I’m already aware that critics love the hell out of this album as it shows up in best-of-its-year lists. I feel like this will become a beloved album if I give it more time.

Arguably the queen of Alt-Country (it's a toss up between her and Gillian Welch), gritty vocals that can switch to angelic while singing songs about loving, drinking, fighting and other country tropes. Dashes of accordian broaden the sound from what is typically expected. It sounds great though. Best Tracks: Car Wheels on a Gravel Road; Drunken Angel; Can't Let Go

Never heard of Lucinda Williams before, and enjoyed this enough to have it on a few times.

finally some good fucking food

Vivid, patient, and unapologetically Southern. Intimately sung and produced. There’s some Springsteen and Mitchell in here too. Evolves into a breakup album in the heavier, faster-paced second half. Rewards a close listen.

Muy bueno, flojean las canciones más lentas. Country-rock, americana??. Me cae bien Lucinda

lovely

This was really good. Much better than I thought it was going to be based on the title/cover. Really enjoyed it in the end.

A very nice folk album.

This is fantastic. I briefly wished I had discovered music like this sooner in my life but then I realized that I wasn't ready for it back then.

Liked it enough to listen to it two more times and it hit on the 3rd lesson. Will probably listen to some of her recent stuff, which seems to consist mostly of covers of interesting stuff.

The song the album is named after starts off sounding like Danny California or some California song by the chili peppers. I feel like this will be categorized in the same area as my review of Liz Phair. This album isn’t good enough for me to care about it but it’s good enough that I’m interested in listening to it. I don’t get what the sudden of in flux of women’s music is though. Is national woman’s day coming up? The 30th anniversary of Lilith Fair? Bad luck? What is it? So ya, I think this was Sheryl Crow before she knew who she was. If I’m wrong then they both released debut albums around the same time. This album is just north of dull sounding The music compliments that but yet there’s something special about it. Here I was thinking that this chick only sang that Crazy Mary song that Pearl Jam covered. I’d give this a thumbs up and a quarter up if I had thumbs ………. I do have thumbs

I've got a soft spot for Lucinda. Every phrase sounds like it's squeezed out between sips of whiskey and pulls from a cigarette. In the style of Sheryl Crow but with a little more edge. Great album for a sunday morning. It's not on this album but 'Fruits of My Labor' is probably one of my most listened to songs over the past few years.

Lovely country specialty from a master at her craft.

Fantastic

Not really my taste in music. I've never heard of her before. Very pleasant songs.

This was a nice surprise! songwriting and vocals are great and it's clearly the progenitor of the 2000s Americana resurge. The production is a little clean, thin, and 90s for my taste on some tunes.

This album feels like a standard example of female country, with nothing standout. Extra star coz I'm biased to country music. Tracks to Track: Car Wheels On A Gravel Road, Right In Time

Yes!! Was introduced to this years ago, have always wanted to revisit more deeply. Evokes such a world, such a mood.

Fantastic, will return for further investigation

Overall vibe reminds me of Sheryl Crow. I like it. I feel like this album is growing on me with every listen so I'm going to skew higher.

Like Gillian Welch, who I rated too low, this grows on me with every listen. Smart, heartfelt lyrics, songs that vary from folky to more rocking country vibes, and husky vocals that sometimes stray into creakiness but don't necessarily appeal less for the very human sound.

I don't know why but the 1001 albums to hear before I die challenge has been recommending me a bunch of Alt-Country, and it is a genre I have been wanting to get more into so I can't argue too much with being exposed to some great music. Lucinda Williams and her 1998 album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road are two things I have never heard of until now, but man did I really get a kick out of how soft this album was. It never feels forced or cheesy, even with the very authentic 90s Alt-Country sound, and comes off as a very nostalgic album for myself despite never hearing it before. This album feels like visiting my grandparents, whom live in a more rural borderline farm area, and watching the sunset go down over the rolling hills. It is a very comfy and simple at its' core to the point where I think just about anyone could pick this up and have a good time with it. Really glad I got around to this one as I really enjoyed what it had to offer myself.

Good, back to basics country, with strong vocals and none of that nonsense like auto tune.

smooth

Gotta look for more of her music

Enjoyable folky album. 4/5

1001 Album Users try not to make fun of Country Challenge: (Impossible) Fun sound, great lyrics and unbelievable storytelling. 8/10

Cover 6 Another artist that I wish I'd listened to sooner. This album is pop folk. Sometimes she sounds a lot like Sheryl Crow (maybe more folksy). This album might be as good as Sheryl's Tuesday Night Music Club. It sounds like it could have been a follow-up album. So if you like Sheryl Crow, you might give this a try. FYI, her sister, Veronica Williams, is also very talented, though I'm not familiar with the entire catalog of either.

I like this record - it’s good. I like her voice, I like her evocative lyrics, the music is good. I like the cover art. I bought it when it came out - I thought it was good then and I think it’s good now. Is it among the greatest 1,001 albums ever? No. But it’s good.

Very decent album. Some very nice songs on this. Good flow throughout

She reminded me a lot Sheryl Crow. I wonder if she was inspiration for Sheryl Crow?🤷🏿‍♂️

Really liked this Not too twangy country and leaned more heavily on a rougher sound

This a very good album with some well written songs and some nice guitar playing. I particularly liked Drunken Angel Can't Let Go and Jackson. A good LP to add to your collection.

I loved this album. Very raw feeling and honest like a person pouring their heart out or observing the world with no social filter to fit in. I especially loved 'Right in Time' but the entire album was great. Not in my normal genre so was nice to go outside the box and experience something new to me.

More country than I usually like, but I enjoyed this album a lot. Blues and folk as much as it is country, and I like how it’s recorded.

for the love of louisiana

High 4 Really liked this one. Nice clean sound, melodic song writing.

This was a decent album for rootsy folk rock and Americana. I can’t say it’s something I see myself coming back to, but it was good for what it was. It definitely has its time and place, even if it didn’t fully click with me personally.

That was wonderful and calm and made me think of Sheryl crow.

It's not often that you listen to an album and actually hear the influence that it had on later artists. But this is one of those albums. It's almost Promethian; Lucia as Prometheus handing the spark down to lesser beings. It's laconic, twangy goodness.

im a fan

Some solid country ish indie ish stuff. Liked it, probably won’t listen agaib

This album put me in mind of a grittier (or should that be more gravelly?) Sheryl Crow, which isn't something I knew I needed in my life. I liked this a lot - it's not re-inventing the wheel (more title puns), but I enjoyed the rawer take on country and there are some strong songs here.

Not Sheryl Crow’s best album, but it is up there.

D'abord, l'immense "2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten". "You took my joy, I want it back".

I actually enjoyed this quite a bit.

I haven't listened to this in a while, but it's as charming as ever.

Better than coldplay

Singer songwriter/americana that is possible to like. Great voice and music. Very repetitive lyrics.

39/1001 Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ✅ I'd previously heard of Lucinda Williams before and may have heard a track or two, but never delved deeper. First things first, I really like Williams's voice. It's got this soulful country lilt that works. It's full of longing, lust and loneliness and the arrangements and general production are top notch.

4.2 One of my Dad's favorites. A great album and great Americana. I went to Lucinda william concert where she played this in its entierty in Toronto. Unfortuanlty they switched venues the day before from Danforth music hall to someplace I forget the name of. The Danforth is a pretty old-school (and cool) spot.

This girl can rock. I appreciate that. Songwriting is beautiful. All the songs have this handcrafted, no machines involved kind of feel. Also “borbed whar”! Some of her best songs and overall, probably her best record. It’s got range and everything. It’s just gorgeous start to finish and I enjoy it a lot. 4/5

First confused her with someone else and was hovering over the button worried about what I was going to hear. Never been so glad to be confused in my life. This album is dirty, gritty, and a force.

Rough and gritty, yet soothing and meditative. (Much like, wouldn’t you know it, car wheels on a gravel road. It’s poetic and whatnot.) Some great stuff on this album. Best song: Greenville

Pleasant, but possibly forgettable.

I almost don't want to admit it. I listened to too much punk rock and alternative music in my youth to not at least wince when saying it but here goes: "country music can actually be pretty good." When I listened to this I was trying to justify why I was enjoying it the whole time. I thought to myself, she kind of sounds like Alanis Morissette who kicks ass so that must be it. It's more rock than country so maybe that's it. Or, the bluegrass tones are pretty cool so maybe that's why I like it. I think in the end I need to get over myself, suck it up and admit that I genuinely liked this album.

Great country music

I really like a lot of this album, having only discovered it about a year ago. I do find it a bit repetitive, and that it dips in quality a bit in the middle, but her songwriting is excellent. I just wish the music was a bit more interesting. The best songs are the ones with better instrumentation and melodies, like the title track, 2 Kool, and Joy. Also really enjoy Lake Charles.

- Here's another example of the difficulty of this whole idea of rating these albums; I just can't place this record in the context of when it was released even though I'm certain that I heard then. My memory fails me. Listening to it now, the sound seems somewhat boring but, at the time of it's release, it was refreshing. I'm just unable to reclaim that experience ..... that's a failing on my part. It's a solid record with good writing and good performances. It's quite enjoyable. She made art and I'm not qualified to judge ..... -

Starting to understand country a bit more. Listened 3 times, on the 3rd… it clicked. Not a big lyrics guy but some great stories on this album.

Very nice vocals and good songwriting for a pretty mainstream singer-songwriter/country record. Not my favorite style, but I’d never be upset if it was playing in a room I’m in.

I'm back and pretty into it babyyyyy

Title track is such a good one! Layered, catchy thoughtful album the whole way through.

Lovely album. Will listen to more of her music.

Pretty dece is she from LA

Fantastic album. What a voice

4.5 stars This may be a 5 star album that I’m reluctant to praise so highly because I knew nothing about it before listening to it. But it’s clearly powerful and transcendent. Great songwriting that boosts Lucinda Williams from a name I’m familiar to someone I’m going to continue to explore.

Certainly a 90s vibe to this. The music is solid but you have to really be in the mood for this vibe.

Not what I expected at all, and I ended up really liking it!

I liked this more than I expected. I don't like most "modern country" and so pretty much anything after 1980 is usually not all that interesting for me. She's got a great voice, and these are interesting songs, with good instrumentation. Very traditional overall, with a nice bit of a folk and blues influence tucked in here and there.

Well here's a name I've known forever but never bothered to listen do. Stupid me. I'll be digging into this discography now.

This was a great album. Super well recorded and produced. I enjoyed the songs and it was a great listen. I'll definitely dive into this again.

Rock country like Cheryl Crow

This was very good. I was familiar with the tracks Car Wheels On A Gravel Road and Can't Let Go but the remaining numbers were pretty new to me. Right In Time has been added to my playlist of faves. It's a very well-produced album with fantastic instrumentation and an all-round great Americana country/folk sound.

Very good country rock that occasionally sounds like Jack White. Slightly too long considering a lot of the songs sound very similar. Never properly moves me.

Bardzo przyjemnie brzmienie. Dobra barwa głosu. Nie monotonne nuty.

Yeah. Great drive and energy all the way

The first half of this album was kind of meh, but the latter half was really good. The last 3 tracks were straight fire back-to-back-to-back. 4/5 Highlights: Can't Let Go Still I Long For Your Kiss Joy Jackson

I may check out more of her stuff, fairly bland as far as country music goes. Feels like Lillith Fair fodder (oh just looked it up & she DID play at Lillith Fair in 1998!)

I liked it. An artist I had never heard of but a combination of Sheryl Crow and Linda Ronstadt.

“can’t let go” was goated. also “joy” was pretty good. i wasn’t expecting a lot from this album. but it was surprisingly good. it was like the country equivalent of pop rock! not my usual genre of choice, but still enjoyable. the album cover was really pretty too (though that doesn’t factor into my rating). 4/5!

Really enjoyed despite the marble mouth

Nothing here quite as good as "Fruits of My Labor." Still, a solid album. I liked the ballads more than the upbeat stuff.

Really enjoyed this one. I thought she did a great job of storytelling with "Can't Let Go" being the obvious standout. Still, I liked the whole thing with its blend of country, blues, and rock complementing the song topics. This kind of thing is not normally in my wheelhouse so this was a bit of a surprise but a welcome one.

Folksy alt-country, twangy Americana, swampy blues. A huge contrast to the bombastic mega-pop country of the era (Twain, Brooks), this is a return to a rootsy style and dark, angry, melancholy themes of Southern abjection. The production is very radio-ready though, the big clean drums setting a propulsive groove that kicks it out of singer-songwriter gear into almost a heartland rock sound. The bright chiming surf guitars on a few tracks are so good! Less a fan of the cajun elements though, the corny accadian accordian sound really takes away from a couple of otherwise great songs. Favorites: Greenville, Metal Firecracker, 2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten, Right in Time, Joy

I am incredibly attracted to Lucinda Williams on this album, but I think that's a legitimate reason to rate it highly. She's an immensely seductive MILF country artist. That's all I have to say.

Pretty good alt country / Americana rock. The feel strikes a balance between a homey and traveling album. Almost every song had some brief, memorable melody in it - but overall some tracks are forgettable or could use a bit more variety. There’s something alluring about it though - it’s simple and feels real and unpretentious. It just feels like you’re in a room hanging out with them playing.

fun rootsy album. lucinda has a compelling voice and her songwriting is very evocative. everything here is very nice to listen to. i did enjoy it, however, there wasn't anything here that i was absolutely over the moon for. it's a good album, but didn't really give me anything that made me feel it was a great album.

New to me and I like it.

I quite liked this, I normally find country a bit twee but prefer something like this with grittier and more personal songwriting. This is also a bit bluesy, it works with the subject matter. She has a great voice and although I don't find it groundbreaking, it stands out as an edgier and sexier album than a lot of the country on this list

Passionate vocals, sweet general vibe. Vocally she reminds me so much of Sheryl Crow.

I have always thought Lucinda Williams seemed pretty sweet. Definitely has some very good songs, but might not be fully for me. That being said this album was great and I really enjoyed it, and it's obviously excellent.

Interesting start on this with (to paraphrase) 'You're good at having sex with me'. The drums on 2 Kool sound eerily similar to the drums on Dani California. I mean the actual drums though, not Chad Smith. (I looked it up and the link here is Rick Rubin) I may just be overthinking this though. Can't get over that song name though. Big fan of it sticking out like a sore thumb in the track list. Kinda loses some steam by the end but that may just be me not being a huge country fan. I liked it though and there's a few songs I added to my rotation I reckon I'll come back to this when I get a country itch. Instrumentally it's interesting, some sick guitars on this, and I'm a much bigger fan of Lucinda's style of singing compared to other country artists. Highlight: Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.

I really enjoyed the album. Though I had a worrying moment midway through the second song were I realised it was country. Made me realise how much I don't focus on music.

Love this shit. That’s all country folk

Damn, never heard of her but I loved this

what can i say ... this couldn't be more in my wheelhouse if it tried. I LOVE lucinda williams and her music means a lot to me even tho shes such a new addition to my life!

Ihan kivaa modernia kantrirokkia. Ei paljon muuta sanottavaa tästä. Parhaat: Right In Time, Lake Charles, Still I Long For Your Kiss

There's something about Lucinda that I really enjoy. 3.5 stars.

Really ended up loving this one. Great storytelling and just chill vibes. Saved a lot of songs to my playlists.

I liked this a lot. Can’t put my finger on which early 2000s singer this reminded me of, but brought me back to that time

Sure! I remember this one fairly well. I have it on CD around here somewhere. Like a lot of albums from around this time, it might benefit from a Side 1 and a Side 2. Maybe the sequencing would be different? Regardless, a very worthy album.

Car Wheels on a Gravel Road Drunken Angel

didn’t listen super closely to lyrics but really, really liked the sound

It was a real.y good album

Makes Sheryl Crow looks like the generic knockoff.

Well written and played country songs, 3/4 but going with a 4

General impression: pro-level folk-country Detailed review: I wanted to be harsh on this because I’m on a streak of 4s and that’s really boring. But this album is just so professionally and capably made that I can’t help but be charmed by it. The last third is my favorite - “Joy” is a really cool song. And the production and recording quality is just so pristine. Deeper thoughts (context): Lucinda Williams walked so Waxahatchee could run, or something cool sounding Score: 3.9 Number of albums left to review: 944 Number of albums from the list I’d consider “must-listens”: 34 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 23
