Sucky album

I can appreciate that not all art is for everyone, and this album is just not for me. Listening to it felt like possibly the longest 28 minutes of my life. The album starts off with a song about the horrors of Mengele’s human experiments at Auschwitz that really just feels like an exercise in torture porn—it’s the aural equivalent of an Eli Roth movie. And it doesn’t get much better from there. Every song is about death or damnation or persecution (or all three) in the bleakest, most brutal way possible. The music follows in lockstep, relentlessly bombarding you as the singer growls the lyrics so quickly that you can barely make out the words. The speed at which they play is impressive, but there’s not much in the way of melody or even variation. The songs seem to bleed together into one long wall of noise that might just have you begging for death by the end. Again, I appreciate that art is subjective and not everything is for everyone. I can understand why some people are drawn to this type of music—I’m just not one of them. I can appreciate metal as a genre. I don’t mind Metallica, and I quite like a lot of symphonic metal. I’ve just never gotten into the thrash/scream-growl side of it. I’m also a fan of dark lyrics and goth music, so it’s not like I don’t understand the appeal of writing about depression and death and other dark subjects. I think The Cure’s Pornography is quite beautiful despite one music critic’s appraisal of it as “Phil Spector in hell.” But Pornography—and goth generally—has plenty of beauty in both the lyrics and melodies, even if it’s rooted in darkness. There’s none of that here. It’s just brutal and raw anger. I suppose I’m glad this music exists, because I’d hate to think what might happen if someone with this much pent up anger had no artistic outlet for it. But also, maybe just go to therapy?

This is a classic album, but probably not suitable for those who don't listen much to metal music. Nevertheless, this album should be known by everyone because it marks a generation and a way of making music.

I didn't listen to slayer much when i was young but a friend took me to 2 concerts. Im still not a huge fan but i enjoy their riffs and the fast pace. I still think the solos are the worst part (i grew up as a solo guitarist). I don't think i have listened to a album the whole way through but i realise that most songs kinda sounds the same on this album. Still enjoyed it might be a bit biased though. As for the imagery and lyrics really shows they knew that it is easier to gain listeners through shock, mysticism and controversy. It is and still is an effective market strategy and they knew it. But i get why people are put off to it but it's the same as a horror movie in a sense.

Burst of energy. Every fast metal band was influenced by this record. It holds up surprisingly well for an old heavy record. Favorite song: Raining Blood.

Energy's a given, and there; The real measure of a band is what they can layer in. Here, Slayer put new tone above, and obviously; It's a great effect for Rein In Blood, equal counterpoint to the edgy facade.

These are the sounds of the devil himself, and they slap.

When I see an album and think hmmm... heavy metal, I'm not gonna like this, well this is the album I'm talking about. It's got all the screaming that I don't enjoy with the heavy instrumentals that I also don't enjoy. This album made me think that a spider living in my ear laying eggs isn't the worst thing that could happen to the inside of my ears

Very high energy and frenetic. Not sure about the nazi song opener. Enjoyable, but it wears me out even with only being a half an hour long. Maybe I am just not built for metal.

Slayer is still probably one of my least favorite thrash bands in terms of vocals (except maybe early megadeth) but this album far surpasses peace sells and is easily in league with master of puppets and rust in peace for me. I immediately added the title track to my hype playlist and honestly I could probably add every other song on the album as well.

Bonus points for Dave Lombardo's drumming which is sensational. However, this is too extreme for my tastes. The Nazi and Satanic overtones are a big turnoff.

I can appreciate the skill, but I'm not likely to choose to listen to a whole album of it.

I generally enjoy Metal, but I have never really enjoyed Slayer. Hearing this record in its entirety did nothing to change that.

I get why others like this, but it’s not my style. Talk singing with some shredding can only keep me interested so long.

Yesterday was Master of Puppets, today is my first listen to Slayer. Not a metal head but have to say I enjoyed both.

This isn’t really my kind of music, but this album won me over. It is absolutely relentless.

One of the big 4, it's fucking SLAYYYYERRRR! Two of their most iconic songs are on this album, "Angel of Death" and "Raining Blood". Fast, aggressive, angry, and shocking. The best kind of metal. \m/

Please play the guitar faster. Almost every song sounds the exact same. To be honest I skiped around the songs and I couldn't tell the difference between them. They all were nearly identical. 1 star

Not my kind of music but I can recognize the foundational importance of this record, setting the tone for the multitude of metal bands and genres to follow. The musicianship on this record is paramount, but I just wish there was more variety. Each song sounds pretty same-y to me and would like a bit more melodic variance. Judging this based on the time it was released though, I can see why it's deemed a classic.

Filing under albums I would never have listened to but for this list, that I'm glad to have listened to but will never listen to again, and that I have no idea how to review. Kind of great in some ways, laughable in others (man, those lyrics...). 2.5?

Man what an absolute shockwave of an album in the world of thrash. Raining Blood never ceases to give me chills.

I couldn’t get past the Nazi sympathy on track one to enjoy the rest of the album.

Wow, harder than I'm used to

Really enjoyed listening to this. Altar of Sacrifice was the first to catch my attention, but the transition from Postmortem to Raining Blood was near perfection

I like metal. That's it. It has cathartic value. And it's fun for the whole family. And I'm sure it's fun for the band to play.

TBH most of it was pretty forgettable, and there were 2 songs missing (sort it out), but it does have Raining Blood.

Predecessor to death metal, it's loud and fast, with only 3 songs longer than 3 minutes. Clear vocals, epic squeeling solos, and satanic lyrics meant for no other purpose than to piss off parents. I found it to be pretty repetitive during the verses, and even with the short timestamps, it's hard for me to find a consistent melody with how they keep shifting tempos and styles every minute or so. This meant most songs blended together, and I had to specifically play each one separately to pick out my favorites. The solos are always the highlights of every song though. There were a few tracks that didn't have anything too notable about them in particular, with the least interesting being "Reborn". But with how short they all are, it was a really fun listen from start to end. Favorites: Angel of Death, Altar of Sacrifice, Postmortem, Raining Blood

A classic trash metal album.

Very good. This is like the ideal thrash album, it really sort of gleams the cube of you know what I mean. I also appreciate it being fairly short. I don’t mean that as an insult, more like trimming the fat off keeps the energy up the whole way through, the listener doesn’t get a chance to zone out. I’ll for sure listen to this one more

1986 was a gigantic year for the genre of Heavy Metal, in particular Thrash. This album came out along with Master Of Puppets by Metallica and Peace Sells by Megadeth, two albums which I’m pretty positive are also on the list. Context helps here because Prog was beginning to become the norm in the genre, as those two albums would certainly show. An increase in recording quality and production value came alongside a more adventurous songwriting process and more experimentation. …and then there was Slayer. Although I would personally say I love the two aforementioned classics, this contemporary album from Slayer marks a serious line in the sand where they declare they are sticking to their roots. Sure they spent a lot more on the production of this compared to their earlier releases, but the composition and lyrical content is very similar to the aggression which put all these Thrash bands on the map in the first place. Although big names of the same genre, Reign In Blood has more in common with classic hardcore punk albums than it does with Metallica’s classic of the same year. While Metallica and Megadeth would influence the progressive and experimental Metal movements which would soon follow, Slayer laid the groundwork for what would soon turn into Death Metal and Speed Metal, which admittedly has become more my speed over time. What I should also mention is I believe this is the second appearance in our project of what I’m sure will be several of Rick Rubin (who also worked on Cash’s American IV) as a producer. Rick is great because he knows nothing about writing or playing music, but gives his production advice on what would “sound cool”. Guess what? This album sounds so fucking cool. That brings me to talking about the individual performances, which are great. It’s loose and chaotic, and the production only adds to the impact. Drum hits have the impact of machine guns, ripping through the mix at over 200bpm. Guitar riffs that practically drip with grit and grime form the base for nearly incomprehensible guitar solos to descend from the heavens and commence their attack. Meanwhile, Tom Araya delivers polarizing lyrics with the tone of a reluctant messenger, only breaking from his typical range to deliver alarmingly convincing screams of despair (most notably on Angel Of Death and Postmortem). Look, altogether, if this isn’t a 5 star Metal record I don’t know what is. It’s a runaway train from start to finish with no way off. It’s an uncompromising show of energy and aggression. It’s amazing.

I’ve never heard this album. I only came to thrash late and when I did eventually hear Master of Puppets it was not 1986 and that band had matured into something of interest to follow. I always knew Slayer were the competition but I never felt inclined to try this album. The cover was off putting and the Satanic overtones seemed distasteful. So it was with some trepidation that I gave this the metaphorical spun today. It’s alright. It’s 1980s thrash innit? Faster and harder hitting than Metallica but the satisfying rhythm is there although there may be too many words. Tori Amos did a cover of the title track. Her version was quite different.

I’m proud of myself for finishing it.

Slayer/Reign In Blood was this perfect confluence of music and marketability at precisely the right time. They took the best parts of thrash punk and dark metal and turned it into a tee shirt. Absolute legends. I can't say it's aged horribly well, but they launched a million sweaty, wrinkled bands.

I am sorry, i really gave it a shot. I just cant get behind this sound.

I understand the skills needed to play this but I think this style of music is INCREDIBLY overrated. Reminds me of avid washed jeans and mullets.

HL: title track, “Angel of Death”, “Altar of Sacrifice”, “Postmortem” I wanted to make a joke about how “Angel of Death” is my favourite Bangles song, but now I can’t even find the brilliant YT mashup to back it up :( In most cases, the extreme subject matter would be an instant turn-off for me. Yet somehow, this sits within the very limited threshold of thrash metal I enjoy. Blame Guitar Hero III. In most cases, it’s the same kind of campy occult horror of witches and devils that put Venom on the map; but not only is Reign in Blood more polished than that band, it adds real-world examples of evil that, for better or for worse, leaves a lasting impression. Not my style. It’s heavy. Questionable on the lyrical content; on listening comes across as very white supremacist, had to do extra reading to see external thoughts. Won’t be on my playlist, but it has its place.

This is the album I was most dreading coming up in the list. Not only do I hate the genre, musicality(!), vocals et al but it also has dredged up terrible memories of terrible people so the caveat to my score is that I have no impartiality. I cannot downplay my hatred. If I thought other albums have been a chore or a bit wearing this is just downright Purgatory. I spent 30 years blissfully unaware they existed, and I’ve spent the last 25 years avoiding them. Tomorrow I will go back to avoidance tactics. If I could score them zero I would.

It’s good for a cardio workout. I didn’t listen to the words much and every song sounded the same.

I struggle to take this music seriously. I also can't imagine playing this music everyday — as a musician. I can't imagine listening to it everyday, but as a listener, you at least have alternatives if another mood strikes. But making this music day after day after day? I can't relate. And I was initially at a 3-star, I mean, whatever, not my thing but people seem to like it. But at what felt like the 12th reference to dismemberment, I realized there seems to be maybe three ideas banging around this album that just keep getting rehashed — and just barely.

I've had this album for years but today was the first day I was able to get through the whole thing. It's a lot. And every song sounds the same. So, I wasn't sure I was going to be able to hang for this. But I don't know. I kind of dug it. By the fourth song, I just found myself engulfed in it and let it take me away. I'm never going to be a metal fan, and the lyrics—when I could understand them—left me wanting. But I didn't hate it, and there were definitely moments, like in the fantastic title track, where I got caught up in it.

I'm a metal neophyte but I can see how this is an archetype for so much of what came after.

I never beat Raining Blood on expert back when I played Guitar hero. Aside from its opening riffs which are awesome, Raining Blood was not one of my favourites off this album which I thought was interesting. Angel of Death, Piece By Piece, Necrophobic were a great triplet to start the album.

Oh look, another album where Rick Rubin hangs around in the recording studio and chimes in with an occasional, "Sounds pretty good" and demands a producer credit. If John Bender from The Breakfast Club ever got out of detention, he'd listen to this and tell everyone it's his favorite album. It ain't my bag at all, probably because I never had a chain wallet and John Bender reminds me of a kid I from high school who was an absolute dick. I'm sure that asshole lives for this album. I hope that isn't true, mainly because I sort of hope he's dead.

The drums and guitar are amazing. The lyrics and vocals are no bueno.

Laughed out loud throughout listening to this album because the lyrics and tone are ridiculous. The thunderclaps at the end are absurd. However you cannot deny the awesomeness of that guitar and the power of the drummer, holy shit.

Like... Slayer

Rick Rubin produced this! Released in the same year as Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill and Run DMC's Raising Hell (both also produced by Rick Rubin), Slayer's Reign in Blood was basically confirmation that they ruled trash metal. They had established themselves prior to this, but Reign was so fine-tuned that it felt like any thrash release after would be playing catchup.

This is the soundtrack to my older brother beating me up when I was a kid. His passion for Slayer was akin to his passion for making my life difficult. Although some of the musicianship seems decent, to me Slayer will always be enablers of shitty big brother behaviour.

Sorry I just can’t listen to this

The musical equivelant of someone who doesn't know how to play Street Fighter mashing buttons - occasionally you'll see some cool stuff but its mostly just chaos.

I should preface this by saying that I've always loved heavy music and still listen to a lot of metal. That said, I hated this album. The guitar solos sound like they've just been pasted in without any regard to the rest of the song, the drums sound cheap, the vocalist is not a great singer, the lyrics are often childish and shoe-horned in without any consideration to cadence, chromaticism has been used as a substitute for creativity etc. I appreciate that it was important at the time for a number of reasons, but it's really not a good listen now.

Highlights: "Raining Blood" An attempt to outdo earlier heavy metal acts that succeeds in the wrong ways and comes out parody. Pretty monotonous and unmusical. Putting the snare so high in the mix on the offbeat is rough, but the guitar solos are the worst part: misguided maximalism that's not on the beat, doesn't have a melodic arc, doesn't regard the key, and recycles a handful of patterns and techniques over and over. When the vocals do this, sputtering as he rushes to finish an unrhyming couplet, it's at least funny.

Eh, I kinda already knew that I didn't like Slayer much. This album was enlightening for sure since I've not listened to much Slayer before this, but it did just confirm what I already figured as much. It's rather shouty, the drums are way too similar each song blasting the snare over and over again, I feel like there is practically no melody in the vocals. Maybe I'm being too reductive or harsh, but I do still feel Slayer is just not for me. I can respect the guitar playing a decent amount, but I generally would still prefer most other types of metal over thrash I think. All in all, would not listen to again.

This is the ideal thrash metal album. Slayer understands that they're going to take the listener to crazy places so they limit the runtime to under 30 minutes. It's packed with short and fast tracks, and bookended by their most iconic songs. Raining Blood is so sick. Still, it's not something I would listen to every day, or even more than one or two times a month. 7/10

1001 albums brings yet another album i never wanna hear again!!! I got up to part way through track 3... and lost the will to live.... but eventually I managed to at least part play all tracks on the album. Its all the same... Quite literally the same riffs throughout. Some would say their style is... full of energy... I'd say... full of shite.... You need to be full on stroking the white bunny with a frontal lobotomy and ears full of wax to even consider this type of thrash metal as worth listening too.

Slightly faster, slightly angrier Metallica. The lyrics are just comical - maybe this sounded heavy and cool back when it came out, but now wow this sounds pretty lame. Even listening to this at the gym it barely gave me anything to push myself, just couldn’t stop from thinking how silly it sounds. Guitar work is impressive, as is the drumming. Pretty sure I’d take Megadeth or Anthrax over this any day though.

I have never really listened to Slayer, what a positive surprise it was! The length was spot on.

One positive is that it was only about 30 minutes long. That's about it. The screaming is not necessary or welcomed. I am sure some love it because it is death metal and \"goes hard.\" I just don't see the appeal.

This was an interesting one. I've never spent much time listening to Slayer but definitely knew of them. I'm not a big metal guy but this was a good, quick thrash metal album. I enjoyed the listen and there were some catchy riffs on it but in honesty know that I probably won't come back to this one very often, just because it's not really my world. Glad I gave it a listen though. Standout Tracks: Angel of Death, Jesus Saves, Postmortem, Raining Blood

Not a fan of metal and knew I wouldn't like this, but Slayer isn't your typical heavy metal hair band and it's music isn't too heavy or depressing. They play at breakneck, superfast speed, definitely a thrash metal sound that leans more towards fast punk than metal, at times, which I can appreciate. Not horrible and I found it mildly amusing and listenable, in small doses.

slayer did not go home; they go so hard on reign in blood. a little too hard for my own tastes; i'm not entirely sure i've heard music like this before. of course, i'm sure that there's many people who love their thrash metal and satanic lyrics. it was far from bad music, and i know they were early to this scene with this album's release in 1986. a precursor for sure, but like many early influences, it's not quite as good as the later music. so i'm left with appreciation!

Okay, so I enjoy metal music. But I guess I draw the line at thrash metal because for me this album is NOT. This had elements of Metallica's style, but without any kind of discernible beat. That said, this arrived in 1986 and clearly sets a standard for more hardcore thrash metal that would take on a life of its own into the 90s and 2000s.

Fun album. The sound seems straightforward on the surface, but it is actually very subtle because it is always different, so I was not bored. The lyrics are so unapologetic they become kind of relaxing.

FUCKIN’ SLAYER!!! this album, to many, is their masterpiece and considered one of the greatest metal albums of all time. tom araya with his barking vocals. guitarists jeff hanneman and kerry king with their sick riffs and alternating chaotic leads. and of course dave lombardo with his lightning fast drumming, you’d swear the dude is an octopus. this is the band’s classic lineup and the band is in top form with their trademark dark, angry energy. after all, what other band would put out a song titled “jesus saves” that mocks and questions christianity? my personal favourite slayer album is south of heaven, but you certainly can’t go wrong with either of these slabs of thrash excellence. highlights: “angel of death”, “alter of sacrifice”, “jesus saves”, “raining blood”.

This was some pretty sick thrash. I'd never really listened to Slayer. I wouldn't have liked it 5 or 6 years ago, but after getting into doom for a while, this was pretty great.

Why would I listen to this moronic trash? If they're serious, then as satanists I have no interest in what they have to say. If they're not serious, they are dabbling in things they have no business dabbling in and are complete and utter idiots. Didn't listen. Won't listen. They have nothing worthy of consideration or merit. It bothers me I spent 1-1/2 minutes typing this.

Leo-muziek, noemden we dit bij ons thuis, naar de gelijknamige buurman die dit soort grafherrie altijd uit zijn slaapkamertje liet schallen. Wat maar weer bewijst dat fans van dit soort muziek vaak hele rustige lieden zijn die geen vlieg kwaad doen. Er zou een interessante dissertatie geschreven kunnen worden waarom dit soort bands zich zo graag wentelen in religieuze thema's, gepaard met een obsessie voor dood en verderf; en waarom hun fans dat dan luisteren. En dat is ook vast wel eens gedaan. Tja, als ik dan toch moet luisteren naar gillende gitaren uit de jaren tachtig, doet u mij dan toch liever Van Halen maar.

Bij uitzondering maar eens de 'expanded edition' geluisterd, want tja, dat is nog steeds maar een half uur. Wij Hollanders klappen altijd met elke tel mee. Wellicht heeft de zanger Nederlandse roots, want hij moet en zal op elke drumslag een lettergreep droppen. Met het hoge tempo van de muziek (lekker hoor), wordt het daardoor wat geforceerd.

Krankjorum snelle metal, waarin de hypersnelle solo's prima uitkomen op een rakketak hampestamp ritme. Maar ik vind juist de tragere stukken gaver, omdat die meer grooven en de drummer daar meer laat zien dat hij gevoel voor ritme heeft, door een ander ritme te drummen dan de gitaar speelt. Ik snap heel goed dat dit album in deze lijst hoort en ik kan het ook wel waarderen, maar na een klein half uur ben ik toch weer blij dat ik even op adem mag komen. Dan nu naar het eindoordeel. Er zitten stukken bij die ik wel 5 sterren durf te geven, Raining Blood bijv. Maar is dit een album wat ik vaker zou draaien? Een enkel nummer tussendoor kan ik heel goed hebben. Ik twijfel tussen een 3 en een 4, maar om een 4 te geven, moet ik het dus uit mezelf ook wel eens op willen zetten. Die neiging heb ik eigenlijk niet. Leuk als het af en toe langskomt, maar ik ga niet een half uur achter elkaar luisteren, dat is dodelijk vermoeiend. 3 sterren is mijn conclusie. En daar zullen ze het mee moeten doen.

I honestly can't describe how much this album blew my mind when I first heard it. I thought Metallica was the peak of 1980s thrash metal, and to be fair they are... but my first experience of Slayer was something else. It made Master of Puppets sound like Rush. It gave me that "hory shet, now THIS is fucking cool!" feeling that is so fleetingly rare after about age 8. I've learned the whole thing on guitar over the years (except the solos, bc who the fuck learns a Slayer solo?) and it still fuckin thumps whenever I play it. Including today. 5/5.

I remember being scared of this kind of band when I was a kid. It's almost comical listening to it now though. I wonder if the band members were in on the joke or if they took it serious. Anyway, not my cup of tea, but the guitars were really impressive all the way through. Would have been nice if even one song sounded different than any of the others.

Well that’ll wake you the fuck up, damn. I don’t think my speakers were ready for such aggressively loud satanism at 8:30am on a Wednesday. But, I'm into it. I don't care for the first track, the controversial one, Angel of Death. The Nazi fetishism to court public outcry and backlash feels a bit too desperate and too deliberate to be taken as actual artistic expression. Other than that, you've got a classic thrash metal album that checks all the right boxes: searing guitars, annihilating drums, and breakneck furious pacing.

Ik heb weinig met de meeste (oude) metal, maar ik laat me graag een beetje opvoeden. Het begin van de openingstrack vind ik erg lekker en daarna word ik bij 'Raining Blood' pas weer echt enthousiast dankzij die iconische riff. De zang irriteert vrijwel niet, wat ik normaal wel vaak heb bij dit genre. Veel nummers onderscheiden zich niet echt van elkaar, maar bij een album van 30 minuten wringt dat niet echt. Tussen de 3 en 4. 90% van dit album ga ik nooit meer aanzetten. Als ik een 4 geef zou dat vooral voor de riff van Raining Blood zijn.

The extremely short runtime and straight-to-the-point song structure makes it less indulgent than the other big thrash metal bands of this era. The guitar solos border on noise at times, as do the vocals. This is pure hardcore, and you're either gonna love it or hate it. I fucking love it.

Boy, that sure hit different than it did when I was younger. I still love the music, but these lyrics... they're so try hard. They're working so hard to be so spooky that it just comes off really really lame. I t's a shame because, as far as speed metal goes, Slayer is the best in the game. At the end of the day, I'm always going to be a metal head, so this is always going to work for me on some level. Unfortunately, it didn't work on every level. Those lyrics, man.,. sheesh.

So glad to get to this one after hearing another of their albums a while back. This has the infamous Raining Blood on Reign In Blood, a play on words. Very satantic, and even a song about the the nazis. Apparently they were interested in that at the time and seems like a very metal thing but that first song rubbed me the wrong way a little. But it's the 80's right? Either way, this was a fun album to go through my email inbox after being gone for a week.

Everybody knows about Slayer I'm sure, and as far as I know this has to be their big one, right? It's got "Raining Blood," which is a Guitar Hero certified classic. Other songs I liked too, which is saying something since this isn't exactly my kind of music. But I appreciate the rage and the filth, and I know these guys are pioneers. Yeah, not the sort of thing that I'd casually throw on in any setting, but damn do I respect this album. Doesn't take much imagination to extrapolate all the influence that this had on metal going forward. Favorite tracks: Raining Blood, Angel of Death, Jesus Saves. Album art: Gotta be iconic, right? You've got the band name in metal font in a pentagram (ooooh the devil!) and the whole cover seems ripped from Dante's Inferno, a scene of people and creatures rotting in hell (once again, ooooh the devil!). Covers like these are the most entertaining part of metal for me. 4/5

I could write a long winded review or I could tell you about the time I blasted Raining Blood ear splitting volume to scare away seagulls trying to steal my fish and chips. This was done much to my then 3 year old daughter's delight

When I saw the length of the album in question, I thought: you can't be serious? But, in all seriousness, Reign in Blood may very well be the definition of all killer, no filler. With Angel of Death leading the way in heavy riffage and, let's be honest, somewhat troublesome lyrical imagery, the album pummels with reckless abandon and seemingly endless displays of aggression. It could be said, with no indication of exception, that it is Slayer's brightest moment in the sun; a blood streaked parade that may never be forgotten.

Didn’t hate as much as I thought I would but gets quite boring quite quickly

I was ready for it to be over by the second song. It just got more intense as it went on though. The best part is that it’s only 35 minutes long. The guitar player and drummer are clearly talented, but this just isn’t it for me. I picked Raining Blood as my favorite song because the rain sounds at the beginning and end are nice (even though I guess they’re supposed to be blood which is not so nice). Old school thrash metal. Reminds me a lot of pre-black album Metallica, which makes sense considering they're both members of the Big 4. Enjoyed it for the most part.

I´m the angel of death. My mother told me to never listen Slayer when I was younger, well. Hello mom, :)

Slayer was very big among my edgier high school cohort (edgy not in the sense of hip people with an edgy vibe, these were troubled youth who went on to things like serious entanglements with the justice system). Clearly this is significant in the evolution of thrash and speed metal, and on the instrumental music side it delivers. I never like this kind of vocal delivery and I never will. But the real obstacle for me is how unpoetic the lyrics are. The subject matter... well I'm not particularly sensitive in that area, though I do think it's even more than usually for this genre shock for shock's sake. But it also is just basically a prose recitation of darkness and atrocity. No meter, no structure, no rhyme. Maybe that's the point? Well, it's a dumb point.

Appreciate this album, its place in history and Rubin's influence, but it's not for me.

That metal...yeah

A bit of nostalgia for this one. I know the lyrics are cringy (especially since you can understand them unlike later death metal lyrics) and there are times such as tracks 2-4 where the music blends together and lacks a little variety. But the riffs and atmosphere are there, it’s relentless, and doesn’t overstay it’s welcome. You can clearly see the major influence this had on early death metal. My favorite part is the Postmortem/Raining Blood finale which is one of my favorite metal songs of all time, and Criminally Insane is underrated. Overall I can’t help but give this 5.

Does exactly what it says on the tin, its a Slayer album. 35 minutes is usually a quite short album but for something at this breakneck speed it actually feels like its a bit too long, I reckon they could definitely have got the point across in 20 minutes

Haha! Yesterday’s choice was Getz/Gilberto very mellow, quiet samba jazz album and today it’s noisy thrash metal from Slayer - literally sublime to ridiculous. Too noisy and thrashy for my taste (same as for recent Sepultura, Megadeath, Anthrax, some Metallica, etc). Thankfully over within 30 minutes.

This album is a great example of thrash metal. There are several things I especially would like to mention. The main one is the tempo of the tracks, it’s incredibly speed. The vocals of Tom Araya are really hard to comprehend. At the same time the tracks themselves are really short, often less than 3 minutes (and the album is about 32 minutes) but nevertheless, they often include 1-2 guitar solos. And what is more, the drumming of Dave Lombardo is incredibly fast too, his fills and playing 16 notes on ride in an insane tempo are really memorable (as well as intro and outro to Epidemic). My favourite tracks so far are Raining Blood, Epidemic and Jesus Saves.

"Reign in Blood" is the third studio album by American thrash metal band Slayer. The album was produced by Rick Rubin and Slayer and was a step up production wise from their previous two albums. The music straddles between thrash metal and hardcore punk and the album is considered a cornerstone in that thrash metal genre. The lyrics deal with death, religion, insanity and human experiments. Human experiments you say? Yeah, there was quite a bit of controversy with the release of the record based on the lyrics of the first song "Angel of Death" and its subject Nazi physician Joseph Mengele and the human experiments he did in the Auschwitz concentration camps. The band denied being Nazi sympathesizers but it followed the band throughout their career. This album received much critical acclaim and brought Slayer into the metal mainstream. A guitar assault, ridiculously fast drums, a guttural scream and we're off with the aforementioned "Angel of Death." The subject was already discussed and was told through the viewpoint of Mengele. The song has been used in various movies, tv shows and video games. The metal onslaught continues in "Piece by Piece." We're into blood, gore and cannibalism now. "Jesus Saves" actually starts out with a slower heavy metal guitar and beat. No worries, we're quickly into thrash. The foolishness of relying on religion to save you. Slower drums and a grinding guitar open "Criminally Insane." Like before we're quickly into thrash. A mind-blowing guitar solo. Drummer Dave Lombardo changing his beats throughout. Murderers taking lives and not caring cause they are....!!! And what better way to end an album then with "Raining Blood." Rain, guitar feedback, drum knocks and then into those classic dual guitar chords and the thrash. The song slows in spots and the speeds up. A banished soul from heaven awakens in purgatory and, well, he declares his plan for heaven at the end with a scream of "I shall reign in blood!!!" Musical chaos. Thunder. Silence. These songs are short and intense. Thr band gets right to the point. The album itself is short at 28 minutes. I think some heavy metal (as well as other genres) albums are way too long and bloated. Not here. The guitar and drumming are next level. The lyrics? Yeah, the music fits. A rock and metal classic.

100 miles per hour groundbreaking metal album, deserving of being on the list, but have to deduct a star for angel of death, feel uneasy listening to that song.

Not only is this not at all a genre I enjoy, I usually don’t give 1-star just for that, but it is also just actively bad. Almost solely on the vocals which sound like the guy is constantly behind where he wants to be and is trying to catch up to get in rhythm with the instruments. Just overall not a good experience. 2/10

Я первый раз услышал Slayer в мешапе с песней про белых медведей из кавказской пленницы. И я так тогда кекал со скрима в этой песне... А альбом очень даже неплох. Это вот получилась смесь Iron Maiden и Black Flag: в меру симфоничность и полный разъёб и расколбас. Кстати, его продюсировал Рик Рубин. Да-да, тот самый Рик Рубин, что похож внешне на бомжа... у гениев свои причуды)) 4, потому что не моя музыка. А так я прям угорел немножко и пролетело всё на одном дыхании. Рекомендуется всем фанатам тяжёлой музыки, а также желающим впервые познакомиться с жанром

This is a seminal thrash metal album and I’m not going to criticize the musicianship; it is top notch and is genre defining. I will push back in the lyrical content especially the first song. Slayer have denied having nazi sympathies and have stated that they shouldn’t have to state that they are against it. However, this leaves their work open for interpretation by bad actors. Furthermore, using the gruesomeness of medical experimentation in an extermination camp for the shock value seems rather callous.

When I read this album was produced by Rick F Rubin, I thought it might be a bit palpable to the Metallica loving side of me. Well, I would say it’s a sprinkle, or a dash. There are moments of Metallic metal, such as partially through “Epidemic,” but melody and rhythm are drowned out by the relentless thrash. I need to be angrier.

Thank god we got this after System of a Down, maybe my favourite metal album. 28 mins, proper thrash, with classic riffs. Some of the best drums on anything

Wow. There’s a lot of anger here. Raining blood is a masterpiece. I would love even more tempo or feel changes at certain points so that the tension can ease up for a minute. But I guess that’s the point. I would love to see Slayer live.

Thrash metal is gross

Um, nope. Awful. Couldn’t finish it. I suppose you’ll either love it or hate it?

Well the music was actually OK, some amazing guitar solos and the drummer was insane. Bit the singing, or should I say shouting, was not so good! And so angry! Also a hit repetitive. Not sure I will be listening again anytime soon!

Slayer metal is too metal for me

Much better than I expected, but would benefit from being a shorter, so more powerful, album. It does get a bit samey.

Finally a bit more heavy metal. This is a blistering record designed to test the limits of finger dexterity (and aural endurance at points). I have a lot of time for this sort of music, and there’s no denying the infectious energy derived from music played at a million miles per hour. The staying power of this record is actually quite astonishing given that even the “expanded” version clocks in at barely half an hour long. The riffs are frantic and sometimes hooky. The soloing is generally just a random assortment of notes splurged together on the track. Couple all of that with the overtly iconoclastic lyrical content, hell bent on saying and illustrating the most obscene images possible, and it’s a good time all round. But I can’t take it all that seriously as a record, simply because it takes itself too seriously for its own good. Nevertheless, I can get behind it. 3.5/5

'80s metal stays losing. idk thrash has never been my thing, but I'd still pick metallica over these guys any day. All that speed & momentum, and nothing interesting done with it. Also they're setting off my Dad Rock alert, where the lyrics and themes probably freaked out a lot of parents when this first came out, but these days it just seems cute

So I'm getting into my backlog of albums that I can't get to the day they're generated either from it being a weekend or just not being able to handle listening to things like Slayer at 4:30 am on the way to work. I'm only familiar with this one from that South Park episode where hippies take over the town. Cartman's plan is to put "Reign in Blood" on over the PA system because hippies can't stand death metal, this is true. His plan works and the hippies disperse. As for me, how do I deal with this one. It accomplished what I assume it set out to do which is make loud, angry music which honors Satan. It's both terrible and awesome at the same time which is a rarity in music. I'm surely going to be subjected to more death metal along this journey hopefully it's not a caricature of this. Hail Satan!

This was wild to me. The parts that were “tough” just seemed cute to me. But the drums and guitars are 100%

I didn’t hate it. There are a couple of good riffs and I like that it’s short, brutal and to the point. But it’s a bit *too* thrashy for me, and too samey to boot. It’s probably not something I’d choose to listen to again. Raining Blood brings back happy Guitar Hero memories though. 2.5

Metal is so funny. They're all like, "I'm a real sicko! Blood and guts and gore!!! SATAN!" That edgy shit just gets funnier and funnier as I get older. Would be embarrassing if it didn't also rip.

I have nothing smart to say about this. It's hard, fast, and utterly devoid of good taste. LOVE IT

A brutal, thrashy classic. Lacks the musical sophistication or versatility of Metallica or Megadeath, but still powerful, hard driving music that grabs you from the start and does no let go. The lyrics are vividly extreme and intentionally repellant. If you can get past that, this is one of the best metal albums out there. Undeniably belongs on this list.

Trash

To be honest I put this on and it hit the spot on a rainy October morning. Blows the cobwebs and everything else away. It doesn't pretend to be anything other than it is.

Slayer n'a jamais été mon genre, mais ça reste un gros classique avec des supers bons riffs. Raining Blood est évidement un anthem du trash.

Classic Thrash metal. Never got into Slayer though. But I was definitely a fan of the others in the "Big 4".

This starts out very rough and gets better and better as the album goes on. It peaks at the very end with the transition from the strong "Postmortem" into the excellent "Raining Blood". But overall that means something like 20% of the album is of good quality. I think it's helpful on this one to compare it to Metallica, because they're sonically very similar. Metallica got better and better with their composition, sound quality and production value on each of their first four albums, and with the sound quality and production value on Black Album as well. Relative to that trajectory, I'd locate "Reign in Blood" somewhere between "Kill 'Em All" and "Ride the Lightning", and closer to the former than the latter. It's played largely like punk rock - they basically get into a super-fast thrash groove in 5th gear and stay there. There's nothing with either the depth of composition or change-of-pace that e.g. "Fade to Black" provides. Until the last two tracks, they don't really play around too much with even multiple grooves per song, let alone varying the sound. And their production quality is low - the singer is just OK, the sound quality is DIY-level poor, and they don't do hardly anything with the instrumentation. It sounds like they got in the studio and just banged it out - which is an aesthetic, but not one I like. The last two tracks were a strong finish though.
