No idea when anybody would listen to this!
Such a breath of fresh air after Metallica. Fast and very aggressive, gets my blood pumping. It's probably dangerous at my age, but I'm willing to take the risk, this music is worth it

I have never heard a slayer album before. I had heard of the band though. But damn this music. It just doesnt do it for me. The songs felt too high tempo. Like they were just fast for the sake of it, regardless of the melody. I think thats why i have always been drawn more towards bands like maiden, metallica etc than this kind of stuff. You can tell musically the band is talented. No doubt about it. They are good musicians. The drummer specifically is a bad ass. Theres some good guitar work too. However, that does not save the album. The track "jesus saves" could not even save this thing. Wow, 28 mins long i thought. Probably 28 mins too long after a reflection. For me personally, this was absolutely junk.
A true thrash classic.
Not for us, we gave up and listened to nightfall in middle earth instead. Which is very good, and would be 5 stars.
Man I try and give every artist a fair shake, but gogdamn, this stuff gives me a headache and makes me want to blowup the outside world. Thankfully, when I was debating this thought in my head, I thought of Soundgarden and Chris Cornell. Crisis averted. Not for me. Will never be for me. Looking forward to a great concert Saturday night and happy this album is behind me. Will not be revisited. 1
It's fast. It's searing. It's only 30 minutes. This album is weirdly enough a very accessible thrash metal album. Catchy and DRAMATIC this album is what metal is about. It also features Rick Rubin as producer and while hit or miss these days was incredibly influential in the hard rock and metal scene in the 80's and as such deserves a shout out. This is an absolute essential for a metal enthusiast. Fuck any metal head that acts too good for stuff like this, bitter little bitches. Anyway 5.
4 Before I even started listening to this album, one of the first things that stood out to me was its length. Like, I knew these guys were on the thrashier side of metal, but 10 songs in 28 minutes is full-on punk runtime territory. Apparently, even the guys in the band were kind of surprised when they saw the final timing themselves and debated if they needed to add more. Well, thank God they did not, because while I thoroughly enjoyed this album, I thought the runtime was perfect - it’s the definition of short, sweet, explosive, and to the point, and I don’t think it needed a second more. Right off the bat, Angel of Death immediately makes you want to bang your head, break things, and then jump in the sickest mosh pit you’ve ever seen in your life. It sets up the vibe and tone of this album perfectly, and I have even more love for it because of its later sampled usage in She Watch Channel Zero?! by Public Enemy. (Give the song a listen if you’re not already familiar - it’s one of PE’s best). From there, that addictingly angsty, aggressive feeling really never subsides until the album ends, in this case with Raining Blood, a song I’m well familiar with thanks to both Guitar Hero III and virtually every haunted house waiting line. The two are far and away the best tracks here (also the two longest), and I think they’re utilized perfectly as bookends to the album. That to say, while I was familiar with both going into this, I wouldn’t have considered myself their biggest fan, but I really think hearing them within the context of this album helped me appreciate them a lot more - and really Slayer as a whole as well. I don’t really have a ton to say on any of the other songs in particular, but what they lack in remarkability is made up for tenfold with the energy they keep alive and permeate. In the future, I definitely see this as the kind of album where I’d be more inclined to listen to the full thing rather than individual songs, and with that, I gotta say, as someone who’s not normally much of a metalhead, I think I may now be a newfound Slayer fan. And it’s good timing as well, considering I’ll be seeing this group headlining at Riot Fest in like two weeks. Extra excited now! Pray for me in the pit, folks.

While Slayer is one of the most influential metal bands of the last 50 years, I've never been able to take them seriously. When this first came out, I was scared of it, but once I listened, it sounded very amateurish and pedestrian. The upshot is that we got the tastiest guitar riff on "Raining Blood".
I did not enjoy it, but some of it is not as bad as I feared. For instance Necrophobic was pretty bad but Angel of Death did not completely assault my ears. Guitar riffs were actually pretty good. But no thanks...I don't need to hear about death, violence and love for satan on the regular.
This is probably really great Thrash metal if you are into that sort of thing. Which I am not. I can appreciate the complex guitar work but after about 20 seconds of each song I'm done with it.

Annoying
I struggle to understand the past. It’s hard to understand something that needs to be lived through. My grandparents would likely have been listening to Elvis and watching him on TV when they were teens. Scandalous swinging hips Elvis. My parents could have been listening to this. We went from Elvis changing pop music and rock n roll, to Slayer in a generation. Weird to think about the changes music will make in the next 30 years. Will it be so obscene that I can’t listen to it and forbid my kids from doing so? Or will I embrace the change and boldly go into the musical future. Album was solid. Blown away that it came out in 85, obviously. Got really distracted in the car thinking about the path of events that lead music here.

Fav: Altar Of Sacrifice Least Fav: Necrophobic Haven’t listened to much metal in my life so this was interesting to listen to. I liked it but I felt like it relied on the same tricks and I got kinda bored by the end but I still liked it overall, so it’s worthy of a 3/5 in my eyes.

Completely silly lyrics, exhaustingly relentless…but I couldn’t help but bob my head along. If nothing else, it gets points for achieving what it set out to do. 2.5 rounded up

It’s absolutely nuts that this was produced by Rick Rubin who at the same time was also working on Licensed to Ill by Beastie Boys and Raising Hell by Run-DMC. He’s probably one of the most accomplished producers of all time, and helped popularize both thrash metal and hip hop at the same time in the late 80s. Reign in Blood is a very good thrash album, and while I won’t comment about the maybe/maybe not Nazi sympathies the band has been accused of, in general I think lyrics dealing with actual horrors of war and individual violence are definitely more “metal” than worshiping Satan or horror mythology, so I guess I give Slayer credit for that. Generally though the lyrics are weak compared to the instrumentals, particularly guitar and drums which are awesome.
3 One of those albums you appreciate once but once is enough
#303. While I wouldn't pick this as their best album, I suppose I can see why it would be picked for this as Raining Blood is probably their most iconic song. One thing I respect about this album: the sound. Nevermind whatever extremes you can find in obscure black metal demos, this is heavy! Also, I respect any band that makes their albums short and concise. But besides those things, I have never particularly cared for the songs themselves. Slayer doesn’t have the songwriting chops of Metallica or Megadeth. They make up for it with a more aggressive presentation, but it doesn’t take me all the way to the same heights that those bands reach.

This is among my favorite albums of all time. It's a masterpiece of thrash metal and at roughly 30 minutes long it almost demands a repeat listen. It's got a punk sensibility that just makes it so good. That said, I don't really listen to this anymore since I gave my life to Christ. I prefer positive music these days. I would be dishonest if I gave this anything less than a 5, but at the same time I encourage anyone reading this to go to the gospels. Scoffers gonna scoff. John 3:16
Come on man. It's one of the best speed metal albums of all time. There's definitely a lull in the middle of the album where a lot of the songs sound similar - but Slayer just rocks. The title track is an all-time favourite.

This album kicks off at 100 mph and never lets up. Heavy, but still melodic. A fun listen if you love metal music.

Edgelord album, raining blood is the only song I'd listen to again.
The one great thing about this album is that most of the songs are fairly short. For a metal album, it is pretty good. The problem is, for me, that I don't think metal is avery good genre. Hard to love.
The thunderstorm sounds and atmosphere of the closing track reminded me of sitting out on the porch on a quiet summer night listening to the rain. Then I looked down at the track name, and realized that those pleasant droplets were BLOOD! Imagine that ‘blood’ in some very metal font and actually dripping red.
Speed for speed’s sake. I like when they slow down to a sprint with riffs that give my brain time to comprehend and bob my head like the last 5 seconds of Necrophobic, the middle of Altar Of Sacrifice, and the opening of Jesus Saves. The opening riff of Postmortem is dope too. I went back to my metal baseline, Metallica, to figure out my thoughts. I like the slower tempos and musicality of Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets over the SPEEEEEED of …And Justice For All and this album. They are still heavy and fast, but not just hastened, notes per minute, flashes of lightning.
#44 - Was fully expecting to hate it, and I feel like I've been put through a washing machine, but I kind of enjoyed it. I see how thrash is the next step to hardcore Punk. Lyrics are disgusting but at least not satanic. Top musicianship tho - both performance and composition.

Absolute must hear if only to understand thrash. Second only to Metallica in sales. Possibly exceeds them in pure hard metal. Yes it’s brutal and fast and difficult. Just like my ex girlfriend. But unlike my ex worth revisiting and you don’t need a jail pass. Even if you don’t like thrash, this is a must hear. Even once.
Of acadamic interest. The super fast drumming and guitar. Music perhaps suitable for violent chase scenes in films, or when doing SPRINT or HIIT training/exercises. But not so much for listening, or for any kind of pleasure/mood making. But I knew that before pressing play, didnt I?
I’m afraid I was away the day they did thrash metal.
It's best in class at what it does (super fast speed metal), tightly arranged and brutally riffed, with whiplash guitar leads, inventive drumming and screamed vocals. I love that there is absolutely no fat on this record; it's 29 minutes long because that is all it needs to be. Metallica; take some notes. But it really relies on you liking this stuff. I don't mind a bit of metal from time to time, and certainly used to go see all-ages thrash metal shows when I was a teenager, but I find this relentlessly aggressive, anti-melodic and humourless record tiring and not particularly engaging. I can appreciate it as a classic album within the genre, but it just doesn't float my boat. At least it is short.

It’s a thrash metal record.
Reign in blood is great, what a riff. In general, the thrash metal gets a bit tiresome and the album blended into one a bit. Also, would it hurt to sing some metal without talking about the devil and that? Maybe something a bit more mundane? Makes me think about how good Blakfish's preparing for guests is, screaming about tidying up. I wouldn't say I had a bad time listening to it, it's a great example of what it is, just not really my thing. 2.5.
Quite good fun. The opposite of boring, and yet quite listenable - lots of tempo changes in each track. Also distinct. Necrophobic, Criminally Insane, and Raining Blood were the best tracks.
Know a couple of slayer tracks but never listened to an album before. Don't think I was aware that they were releasing stuff in the 80s, would've put this as mid 90s. Don't mind a bit of thrash metal, I don't think this is as good as master of puppets Raining blood is the only track I knew and it's the best one imo. Angel of death is pretty good too 3.5 but 3 I think

Hell yeah
This was a solid metal album entry, but it didn't feel or sound like anything more significant than other albums that were released around the same time period in the 1980s. While I didn't grow up listening to thrash metal, I've grown to enjoy it over time. Unfortunately, due to my upbringing, I still find the satanic imagery and lyrics unsettling, even if the band is doing it in ironic fashion.
Slayer entered my realm of music with South of Heaven and I would often visit earlier albums of the bands I was listening to, so this was part of that process for me. I haven't listened to this in years and I still really enjoy it. Add a little nostalgia in and this is a solid 3.75 for me.

I did catch a glimpse of why some people might enjoy this as I had it playing driving to an appointment when I was late and stressed. The vibe was chaos. But I cannot take seriously the bad music because of the much worse, awful and cringe lyrics. Pissing off the parents by writing a screaming song about a Nazi? Nah.
Not even a half hour in length, but it still felt long. No fucking thank you.

Points for some serious riffage, though I’m not sure these guys have done enough to prove they aren’t actually nazis. It’s fun while it lasts but if you’re not mad for it you’ll forget how it goes. Raining Blood is an all timer, mind.
I prefer their ballads
A bunch of self-absorbed dweebs, hellbent on making their mothers dislike their art, stumble upon both the Nuremberg transcripts and a second brain cell. They resolve to make a completely tasteless first track in the name of being edgy. I imagine adolescent boys and maladjusted art critics spend forever trying to justify it, but literally nobody wants to be at that conference. 2 stars as a result, which is a shame, because the music was occasionally enjoyable.

This seems very love-it-or-hate it, but I'm in the middle. I don't dislike metal (love the energy) but I want something that will make it stand out to me. This didn't, it all sounded the same.
Cant deny the skills of the drummer and the guitarist in this work - they are off the charts. Not my cup of tea - would not listen again. 2 stars for personal preference, but would give a 3 or 4 for the musical skills.

What a classic, what a scorcher! End to end a perfect record - tight, fast, furious, dark and evil. My go to record to passive/aggressively signal my displeasure at neighbours’ musical choices - and have a good time while doing it.
Brutal, bombastic, unrelenting and so influential, a rough & raw classic.

Fuck yes, some proper music
This...was quite good! My heart was in my boots when I got it, but I went out for a brisk run and listened to it, and it was way better than I'd feared. Obviously it starts with a 10 second long scream, which (a) is very funny, and (b) meant I set off at about four times my usual pace like I'd been shot out of a cannon. But after that, while it's really heavy and not my thing at all, there's, y'know, melody and skill to the music. A lesson to lots of other metal bands that it's OK to write actual songs that don't make people want to cut their ears off.
A fun listen, really good energy. None of the songs really caught my ear but I was enjoying it the whole time at least
- This one hurts, because this is the most disappointing album for me thus far. I like a lot of metal, but Slayer's work here was just not on my wavelength for the most part. - I find the message of "Jesus Saves" to be interesting and enjoy "Criminally Insane" and "Raining Blood" (the latter largely because I remember it being an absolute bitch to try and do well on in Guitar Hero III). - Unfortunately almost every track feels virtually identical despite the fantastic guitar work. The tempo never changes. The tone never changes. The lyrics never become less than overbearing. And any moments of innovation feel drowned out by the monotony. - Also, I do not believe that the members of Slayer are in any way Nazi sympathizers...but "Angel of Death" is admittedly tasteless. And a very hard sell for the first track.

I swear, if I had been a bit cooler as an 11yo kid… That melted my face. What I caught of it, I enjoyed. Some of it definitely sounded like an iron cage of cookware and angry bears falling down a flight of stairs.

Absolute tosh, but it could be quite entertaining if you're in the right mood. Drummer only knows one drum beat, the singer only has the notes he wrote during his maths class and the guitarist had lovely hair.

Metal is not usually my thing because most of it is terrible. But when its done well, like here, its really good. This album was very similar to a lot of Metallica's less popular songs. The transition from postmortem into raining blood made me sopping wet ngl and double bass rustles my britches a little. A few of the songs felt like filler but most of them were unique in their own way. The solo on aggressive protector was siq. Favorite song: Angel of death, it might've been raining blood but that song is the only one I can't beat on expert in guitar hero. Do not @

This is a welcome album for me since my only exposure to thrash metal so far has been through a little Metallica and King Gizzard's metal albums (no doubt the latter were heavily inspired by these 80s bands). I got to see drummer on this album, Dave Lombardo play with Mr. Bungle last year. Wild that Rick Rubin produced this album, that must've been around the same time he was working with early hip-hop acts like Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys. This album rips, really gets the blood pumping, especially the really fast moments. It paired well with my morning caffeine. I can't say there were any moments I didn't enjoy. Out of all the albums we've listened to so far that I wasn't already familiar with, this is my favorite.

Metal thrasher is incredibly goofy to me. Like what are you so mad about? Calm down? Like I can’t comprehend that people are into this unless it’s for a joke. Anyways, this was tough to get through. It’s probably pretty good for metal but seems like they’re a bit… sympathetic towards some problematic tings.
Don't love the vocals, the guitars go pretty hard sometimes but other times are almost overwhelming for the sake of noise. Melodies all kind of blended together across songs. Did a bit of research on metal subculture and neo-nazis, obviously not all metal music/it's fans support Nazis, but slayer towed the line a little too close... Have to knock off a point for that. I respect heavy metal’s place in music history. If you track rock music from the 50s on it is sort of the natural progression to push its sound harder and harder. This music definitely has energy and I guess it was impressive from a technical standpoint, but I just don’t ever see myself getting into heavy metal, and certainly not thrasher metal. Not in this lifetime at least. I did listen to this thing from start to finish, but only because it had a really short runtime. Grinding Overwatch and listening to this album was a 10/10 experience. This album goes really hard. You always hear people talking about Slayer, but you never really listen until you got a website that forces you to. and I am glad i did. Ez 4
Brutal, thrash, over the top
Really love the guitars here. If they didn't invent the death metal sound, they perfected it.
It sounds a bit like a take off on Metallica's Kill 'Em All if there wasn't anything catchy or very interesting. Most of it sounds like the same song, either sped up or slowed down by 25%. Every once in a while there is a totally "this doesn't fit with the rest of the song" speed metal solo. Towards the end, there is a little more groove and uniqueness, definitely Raining Blood and parts of Postmortem and Reborn.
As a non metal fan I did think this wasn't that bad at all actually, but maybe a bit too much for the morning commute

I've heard this album before, but the reason why was because the Angry Video Game Nerd pretty much said that any Slayer record could be a good replacement for DOOM music, and he ain't wrong. This album makes me want to go travel to Hell and kill every single demon I see in the most gratuitous violent way possible.
I liked a lot of the guitar, but the high pitched wailing and dumb lyrics spoiled it.
I didn't enjoy any of this, which is interesting because I do like some other bands from this genre/era (like Metallica, Pantera, etc). It's like this band included all the parts I'm not psyched about (the rage) and excluded all the parts I do like (melody, interesting rhythms).
I understand the appeal, and this could be a 3 star rating if the lyrics weren't so dumb.
This might be the first metal album this list has spat out where I didn't mind the music - made me think of At the Drive In, System of a Down, or even Queens of the Stone Age - but the dumb, body horror lyrics were giving serious 12 year old who thinks he's edgy vibes.

I feel a little hypocritical here, because I've definitely given records on here a note of "most of the songs feel the same" and listening with these ears, I feel the same on most of these. Thrashing, heaviness, an occasional Tom Araya scream, into a fast, harmonic-squealing solo. Unfortunately, i'm a hypocrite, and I love this record. I think one thing it has going for it, is that it's a tight, tight 30 minutes. That, and it's fucking Slayer. Favorite tracks: "Angel of Death", "Epidemic", "Raining Blood"
This sounds like being loud for the sake of being loud. Sometimes there's a bit of guitar sound that's nice, but they usually don't play a compelling melody. The singing is also basically one note.
Slayer? Don't even know er! Seriously though you shouldn't slay people you know. Or people you don't know, for that matter. Unless you're slaying them with the scintillating sounds of 80s thrash, of course. Taken individually, each song is a kickass metal song. As a whole though the album finds a way to drag on even though it's just 28 minutes long.

Not only is this an important record for its time, but it's an important for metal all time. It helped build underground metal in the 1980s and was a heavy influence in the creation of death metal (which some folks say Slayer is the first death metal band).

It's hard to believe people really like this kind of 'singing'. I get the music though. Like too many rock and pop bands though - way too comfortable with satanic and Luciferian stuff.
I read that this features in a number of "best" lists - best metal albums, best of 1986, etc so I really tried to be objective. It's very fast. But I hated the vocals and honestly, you can do much nicer things with guitars. Dreadful. Or to quote another, succinct reviewer: "horreur". 0 stars.

Getting a metal album on this is one of the best feelings. Not a super well represented genre on the list though. I love metal music, and I love exploring the ridiculous amount of artists there are in the space. In terms of a Mount Rushmore of thrash metal bands, Slayer definitely belongs up there. They are one of the most essential in the history and evolution of the genre. And Reign in Blood is usually considered the culmination of the best aspects of the band. This wastes absolutely no time getting going, and there is no stopping until it’s over. It’s a blistering collection of short and ferocious metal songs that pack a serious punch. The drumming and guitar work are just next level, and the speed they maintain is honestly awe inspiring. The vocals are a good mix of clean and rough. They sort of lie somewhere between James Hetfield heavy and Chuck Schuldiner heavy. And it does all of this in less than 30 minutes. It’s a powerful effort for such a short amount of time. But honestly I think the album suffers a little bit from being so short. For me personally, a lot of listening to thrash and death metal is what I like to call pattern recognition. I often have to listen to these songs multiple times to really get what makes them so good, because everything moves so quickly. And so when the majority of the album is composed of 1 to 2 minute long songs, I’m barely beginning to like the song before it’s over and I’m moving on the next one. This is why the first and last song are by far the best. They are the longest, and spend the most time really developing the riffs and rhythms. But this is still a fantastic piece of work from one of metal’s most foundational bands. Rating: 7/10

This project can be quite a ride. This week I had Yes then Big Star then Joni Mitchell and now Slayer. I suppose that's why I'm here! Love the energy here, Slayer is fully committed to what they are doing and they do it well. However it starts feeling repetitive just a few songs in. If you love it then you are in luck. If you only like it, as I do, then it is too much. Any single song or two I'd probably give 5 stars. But the sum is less than the parts.

So I have mentioned this before, but I thoroughly enjoy hard/heavy music - so Zeppelin, Sabbath, Nazareth, UFO, Iron Maiden, Tool, Metallica, Dio, Scorpions, Priest etc. - as are all in my wheelhouse, but for some reason, speed and thrash metal, have never really appealed to me - and this album was NO different... Once again, we have a band that is trying to play as fast as possible, along with almost NON-EXISTIENT vocals - which did absolutely nothing for me... BTW - just because a drummer has mastered the double bass pedal from a speed perspective, doesn't mean that you should use it ALL the freakin' time... And vocally, there is no melody of any sort, no singing of any kind - just screaming, and the lyrics are just dreadful... I'm beginning to think that my issue with this genre, is that there is absolutely NO room for the music to breathe... Good music is a nice balance between the notes, and the empty spaces - with some arguing that the empty spaces - and the contrast that they create with the actual notes, is what creates musical magic... This band is trying to play as many notes as the possibly can, and trying to play them as fast as they possibly can, that there is absolutely no space for the music to breathe - like AT ALL... Not a decent song on the album in my opinion, and in fact, I was running through what some of the reviewers thought were the best songs on the album a 2nd time through... So I was listening to "Alter Of Sacrifice" and was about 35 seconds into it, when I REALLY began to regret my decision... Fortunately, right about then, a good friend called - which stopped my music app so I could take the call... I answered by saying "...Thank God you called, I really appreciate you saving me..." : ) Would truly give this a "0" (ZERO) if I could, and I think there may have been only 1 other album to date that I thought that about - so 1-star for this dreadful, dismal, awful-excuse-for-an-album...
Oh so… this is influential on what not to sound like I hope? Thank goodness it was less than half an hour because oh boy. It’s almost funny how bad it was but one more minute and it wouldn’t have been humorous anymore. Such a strange album.
... halfway through the album with headphones still on from somewhere inside my intestines erupted an unholy roar as I shredded off my clothes and sprinted full speed to the front of the house and dove through the window - shattering the pane and leaving screaming children in my wake, all the while having sliced my head in 12 places I felt nothing but the pleasure of the pain as I regained my footing - while drinking my own blood that was pouring down my face and giving me nourishment I ran to the end of the road where i killed that annoying stray dog with my bare hands and started eating the raw meat in the middle of the road and screamed SAAAAAATAAAAANNNNNNNN! to morning commuters ...how's *your* day going? 2/10 1 star

I am not well versed in the genre of Thrash Metal but I do know that Slayer is a landmark band and this a landmark album. I went in thinking maybe a couple of songs would stand out but I was pleasantly surprised when I finished the album I was ready to start it again.
Fast Aggressive. loud. angry. its everything you want from Slayer. and if you do not know then this is a great way to get to know them. Angel of death and Raining blood are amazing songs that changed music. the opening riff of raining blood is instantly recognizable. by the standards of deathcore and DEath metal the lyrics are clean.

Relentless, punishing, in your face, brutal. I forgot how many times I listened this record. It has been very formative in my appreciation of music and metal in general. Altar Of Sacrifice into Jesus Saves is chef's kiss This album is such an important one for me, but also music in general! Just a fantastic album! I wish the bass was more audible though. Standout tracks: Angel Of Death, Piece By Piece, Altar Of Sacrifice, Jesus Saves, Criminally Insane, Reborn, Epidemic, Raining Blood 9 out of 10
I guess I can appreciate that it was over quickly, and it made me laugh a few times. Unfortunately it prioritizes speed over actually sounding good for the most part. Raining Blood is about the only song I could pull out of a line up here. I don't know, thrash metal has never done it for me. I'm alright having listened to it once, might come back to Raining Blood if the mood strikes. Feels like a solid 2 overall.

The guitars and the drums sound awesome! The lyrics though... Not something I want in my brain, even as a passive listen. I don't know how anybody in the 80s would've known what these guys are saying at a concert or listening on speakers. But that's how they getcha.

I've always liked heavy music, but lots of the metal albums on this list have been new to me. This one is okay but doesn't hook you in the same way as '...And Justice For All' does. The songs all sound a bit too similar. Postmortem was good though.

Gonna start with a neutral 2.5/5 grade because of how supposedly groundbreaking for the genre of thrash metal this album was in 1986. Then I'm gonna add bonus or penalty points depending on the flaws and assets I perceive when I listen to this record. We'll see where that leads me in the end (I honestly have no idea of the final grade as I'm writing those words): Incredibly virtuosistic guitar solos: +1. I'm not keen on gratuitous virtuosity, but I have to admit those solos are impressive and even pretty fun to "follow". One critic even compared them to Jackson Pollock's "drippings". An apt comparison. Current score: 3.5. Rick Rubin's *dry* production values: +1. A welcome corrective to the awful overblown production values in this genre during the eighties. It would take years for similar acts to catch up. This allowed *Reign In Blood*'s *sound* to age quite well (as "dated" and "cliché" as the *music* on it is today, admittedly). Current score: 4.5. The lyrics of *Angel Of Death*: -1. The real issue here is not to say that Slayers are "nazis". They collaborated with Ice-T's Body Count, for instance, and I don't think that collab would have gone on well if they were indeed admirers of the swastika. As Wikipedia points out, the band's members stated that they did not condone Nazism and were merely "interested" in the subject. Here is the sort of fascination for "evil" you can find in Joy Division and Motörhead, and I have no real problem with it, as limited and immature as that behaviour is. But it's the "way" that Slayer tackle that particular subject that is pretty stupid and, let's face it, totally irresponsible. Current score: 3.5 (A quick aside on that subject: "Angel Of Death" being a *first-person account* of Dr. Mengele's atrocious acts in Auschwitz, Jeff Hanneman's lyrics did not need to establish that Mengele was a monster, as Hanneman himself remarked. Everyone with a shred of intelligence and decency left in their souls knows it, of course. But just going for cheap thrills with a detailled account of Mengele's infamous tortures of his "patients", without anything in said lyrics conveying the bigger picture that the Holocaust is, is turning this heavy subject into a scary joy ride at Six Flags, or into an entertaining spectacle found in a cheap horror/gore B-movie. Worse, it can allow *genuine* nazi scums with brains the size of a pea to have fun and celebrate the memory of Mengele. Which is dumb as a bell. I'm not saying music should always be "moralist" or fully "responsible". But there should have been something in the lyrics preventing real nazis to enjoy the song. Like, I don't know, presenting Mengele as an inadequate character for a normal job, and who had no real "power" apart from the pain and death he inflicted on his victims. A couple of lines about that would have been enough, and they wouldn't have veered the initial "provocative" tone of the song off-course. This is not something Hanneman had given a lot of thought about, unfortunately. I know *some* metalheads are not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but jeeze, connect you brain cells a little. Unless you have no problem being associated with nazism. But in that case, you have no brain cells left in your skull anyway. So don't complain if outsiders of the genre call you out with a few unpleasant monikers, please. You reap what you sow). Back to my bonus points / penalty points now... The odd meter of the lyrics, not fit for the bars that welcome them (and the resulting lack of enticing or merely effective rhythm in the vocal parts): -1. In all honesty, this is an issue pestering a lot of "classic" thrash metal albums (see the early Sepultura LPs, for instance). But it's not because fans of the genre are notoriously deaf to that aspect that I'm gonna refrain from giving that penalty point. Please, Slayer fans, understand that this is probably one of the features of thrash metal that are always gonna be off-putting for most listeners, even those interested in "extreme", aggressive genres. It's a problem that has been solved by other sub-strands of metal, fortunately... Current score: 2.5. The lack of variation in the compositions: -1. Always the same tonic for the chords, aside from a few lazy modulations, always the same fast-paced pattern on the drums and the muted-palm thing on the guitar... And most chords are interchangeable anyway. It's annoying as f*ck. Other "repetitive" styles can be redeemed by other elements in the songs (example: the energy of the vocals for punk and hardcore-punk). But as said earlier, the vocals are just meh here. Nothing to save most cuts between "Angel Of Death" and the title-track from oblivion. What you have here is basically the same song *times ten*. Current score: 1.5. The evocative, expressionistic artwork of the cover: +0.5. Can't give a full point for that, because it doesn't change anything to the music... but metal albums covers showing *genuine* artistic flair are quite rare. So I had to take that artwork into acount somehow. Current score: 2. Can't see any other redeeming elements in this album, though. Is 2/5 my final score? Maybe not, because I found this on Wikipedia: "When asked why *Reign in Blood* has retained its popularity, [Slayer's Kerry] King replied: "today, no one would give a shit. It was timing; it was a change in sound. In thrash metal at that time, no one had ever heard good production on a record like that. It was just a bunch of things that came together at once." We're going back full circle to my first bonus point about the album's production values, and I could almost give a 0.5 point to King (and by extension, to Slayer) for being so lucid and even humble about the whole situation. Indeed, no one would give a shit if this album came out today. And this avowal also suggests that *Reign In Blood* sounds pretty dated by today's metal standards, which is a little problematic for genres supposed to thrill or even "shock" their audiences--as if the edge of your knife wasn't so sharp anymore, to use a metaphor I've already used before, albeit for different reasons... Adding that 0.5 point, actually. Just to state that I understand that this record is "objectively" important, even if I wll probably never listen to it again.. Do I round up to 3, now? I will, only to underline how fitting the current global score of this thing is, as "important" as *Reing In Blood* is to some ears. Because this record's existence doesn't elicit anything to me beyond giving it bonus and penalty points. It makes me "feel" nothing. Which is why, in the end, a "neutral grade" is perfectly suited for it. To paraphrase "Piece By Piece", "No emotions, *maths* are all I see". Instrumentally it’s clear Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King can write a riff. It’s clear Tom Arayas vocals tear through ever song, goofy ass lyrics aside. I think that might be the one negative. The words come across as cringey, bad satanic/fantasy novel nonsense. Regardless their rips and shreds. I mean…it IS Slayer.

Before listening: I've never been a fan of Slayer. They are a bit to Fast Metal for me. And too much shouting and screaming. After listening: Nope, still don't like it. Some of the music was not as bad as I'd expected but the whole thing as a whole is just not my cup of tea.

Ok, i guess a lot of people hear never listened to real heavy metal and death metal before. This is a classic heavy metal album and deserves its spot in the metal hall of fame. It set the grounds for death metal. I know this isn't for everybody (not my favourite metal genre also),but...Just because you don't understand the music you don't have to sh*t on it :)

Musically and lyrically, I must be in a specific mood for this. And right after K-pop while sipping a cup of hot tea isn't it unless you want some form of musical whiplash? I wouldn't turn it down, but I wouldn't necessarily seek it out. The guitar work was cool, though.
Rating: 9/10 Amazing album, definitely a classic thrash metal album. The energy and passion throughout this album is almost unrivaled. There are plenty of groovy and heavy riffs and the drumming is blisteringly fast. It is very one-dimensional however; the best songs are the ones that are a bit longer and groovier and don't always have the same style of thrash metal riffs and drumming. Favorite songs: Angel Of Death, Altar Of Sacrifice, Jesus Saves, Criminally Insane, Epidemic, Postmortem, Raining Blood. Worst song: Reborn.
Thrash Metal at its finest? I dunno, it certainly upped my energy levels for the half hour or so it lasted. First track hits hard and it doesn't slow down, all gas, absolute gas, no brakes.

Oh! That was a brief surprise, seeing this pop up in the browser window. But of course, it belongs in here. Now, for the caveat. I was quite the Metalhead as a teenager, with checkboxes ticked for two of the Big 4, however Slayer had always been a bit too much and I had never listened to Reign In Blood front to back. Now that I do... maybe it's been too little🤔? I respect and appreciate the intense, relentless pounding - it's the point - but half an hour of it as, y'know, *music*? Araya's recitals? And I can't divorce myself from hearing this in 2024, 38 years later: Like, my brain wants to grab onto something here that I find genuinely enjoyable, today, but there aren't a whole lot of interesting bits to work with or they fray immediately. That's probably the point, too, in an album about death and suffering, but honestly, it's an 'eh' from me. Rounding up for the impact Reign In Blood deservedly had.

Overall, impressive musical skill level and dark themes stood out. I now have another band to listen to when I’m speeding down the highway.
A decent thrash album. The title track is easily the best on the album but it’s also the second last track on the album, making it feel like it peaks a little too late. 3.5/5.
Nothing incredible, a fine metal album.
I feel I have to rate this album 5 stars. It is so monumental and has had such impact on metal and metalcore music. Personally, I'd probably give it 4 stars, just for my own enjoyment in 2024, as well as how often I'd ever return to it, but the extra star is definitely earned, as the album does still hold up in many ways, especially in how easily you can hear the impact on heavy music even today.

First time actively listening and it was quite enjoyable. If my angsty teen brought this home I’d certainly ruin it by giggling at the ‘hail Satan’ bits. Really enjoyed this. Wish it were twice as long, though.

I heard Raining Blood many years ago on Guitar Hero, but it was only recently that I realised the album name is actually Reign In Blood. I do love a good pun. Wouldn’t have guessed that Slayer likes them as much as me. Songs I already knew: Raining Blood Favourites: Raining Blood, Angel Of Death What an absolute half hour of power, bookended by some real crunchy guitars. There is the odd high pitched scream that I’d usually attribute to power metal (I think I commented that with Anthrax recently too) which admittedly did make me giggle, but overall this was very easy to enjoy. I was surprised when Raining Blood started playing - I knew that into straight away and knew it was the final song, and didn’t want the album to be over.
they seem like nice young men but with rare exceptions metal just sounds lame to me, it’s never actually heavy or scary
