Reviews (page 7 of 8)
Greit nok, litt intetsigande
Reminded me of the same type of insanity on Brian Wilson's Smile. Just more experimental and less enjoyable. 1.7
I don't really get the appeal of this new age, post-modern pop. It just sounds like rain drops or faucets and synth, on repeat. This is not the first band or album of this genre that made the list and I don't know why they keep showing up. Or at least why more than one or two are on the list.
I get this is experimental. But I can't just sit here and pretend I am liking or understanding any of this music. Some of the sounds are cool, but quickly become monotone or are paired with or made into something weird. Either way, some of the highs on this album are good, and even though I wouldn't listen to any of this again, I feel like some appreciation for what they are trying to make is guaranteed.
mmmmm
Inte riktigt min kopp te. Försökte ändå två gånger
Bof
This was the first album that I had to turn down. Some of those high-pitched sounds were way too much for my middle-aged ears. 😂🤣 Overall, I did not enjoy this album. A bit all over the place for me and sometimes a bit annoying.
There are some good songs but they are seriously trying yo hide that.
I don't get this band and I don't get this album. I don't understand this type of music, it's pretty confusing and random at times, with some unexpected passages of melody coming in least expected moments. It's definitely not terrible, but 100% it's not entertaining at all. Couldn't even get to a halfway point on this album, just too much of a n experimental mess.
It wasn't bad. It wasn't good.
Rating: 5/10 Incredibly meh album. It is a very creative album, the band definitely has their own unique sound. Very psychedelic, they were under the influence of shrooms/LSD for sure, maybe that's what I have to be on to actually enjoy this album. Despite this, there is not a single memorable melody or chorus on this entire album. Very forgettable album, still was an interesting listen though. Favorite song: My Girls, everything else is very meh.
2/5. Not a fan of this record. Good Riddance
I could have sworn I liked Animal Collective back in the day. I was surprised to find this pretty much unlistenable, especially on headphones. It hurts my ears.
Like a lot of art/experimental pop, it just feels like a pop band that didn't make it and just starts being wierd for wierds sake. It's listenable.
I really liked one song. I would like the entire album a whole lot more if you removed the vocals (and therefore lyrics also) on almost every track, leaving just weird ambient noises and programmed loops. I actually liked that part of it. As is it almost sounds like Beach Boys harmonies over Aphex Twin, and I’m not sure that’s a winning combination. They warped and distorted the vocals on the one song I liked, which made it fit a little better with the music. Our Mutual Friend Mike introduced me to Animal Collective circa 2007ish? I say introduced because he told me I had to listen to them, though I’d already read about them on Pitchfork. I ripped copies of Feels and Sung Tongs and had them on my hard drive for a long time, during which I never listened to either in its entirety. The little bit I heard, plus the interviews and reviews, really made me hate them. And I still wanted to hate them. That I enjoyed this even a little goes against my moral fiber. They seemed like the worst type of pretentious, humorless modern hippie hipsters. Ugh. I’d like to take this moment to talk about Pitchfork. This album made me think about the site— I came to odd realization that I’ve been visiting almost daily for over twenty years, even though it’s not what it used to be. Now it’s much more professional and slicker due to its corporate overlords. It has wider appeal and is much more objective in its reviews, no longer ignoring wide swathes of music styles in favor of white boy indie rock. But in a way it has suffered for improving. It’s lost its personality. The funny thing is it was probably already past its heyday when I started reading it in the early 2000s. To me the most important thing I ever got from pitchfork was its original list of best albums of the ‘90s. That’s how I got obsessed with Pavement. More often than not I disagreed with their ratings and found their reviews either snotty or pretentious. Heck, I barely even read most of the reviews. In twenty years of visiting the site I can think of only a handful of articles or reviews that I loved for the writing. (Best of all, an article called Twee as Fuck. Look it up.) What I found most useful was their most divisive and mocked element in the early days— the ten point rating scale. Seeing their ratings and reading the two sentence blurb at the beginning of each review has allowed me to keep my finger on the pulse of modern music. This is not to say I never found music via the site. For every Animal Collective there was an Arcade Fire (who may now be lousy but whose first album was like a jolt of lightning). Back to Animal Collective: Two Stars.
My first time listening to Animal Collective was in college, finding them in a shared iTunes library and thinking the name sounded cool. I didn't appreciate them then and still don't now. Definitely not my genre and I don't find anything about them particularly musical other than some vocal harmonies. They seem to have the same exact sound and structure to every track and I couldn't bear to finish the album.
It definitely makes me feel a certain way so I guess it succeeds at being art. Unfortunately it makes me feel irritated and I do not enjoy it. 1.81 average per track.
Weird and ethereal, but it's just a little too bizarre for me.
"rockzinho alternativo" bem xaropinho, difícil de escutar até o fim
Meh, not for me
I feel like I should like Animal Collective, but I really don't. Not sure why. I like M83. I like Beach House. I find listening to this album to be tedious.
This album has the feel of a good witch perptually winding up to cast a happy spell of magic. I think the sound is a bit repetitive, with vocals causing this at times. But the endearing, visceral lyric style is enough to hold our interest as we envy the composer's perspective and experience.
A band that I've always wanted to listen to, but never got around to it. Now I know why I waited so long. Almost all the songs sound like they start and end before anything happens. I would say the middle, but the middle usually has a chorus. I don't think that really existed in any of the songs? The band has potential...maybe, it's the album that was chosen for me. I might try another album, but it would have to be when there's nothing left to listen too.
Not fun to listen to
They set some dreamy mood and in turns into some mess. Just not my kind of music.
At first I thought it was interesting and then I wanted it to stop
Not too impressed, it is a bit too messy especially at the end.
Psy rock. Rien de tres intéressant 4.5/10
I'm just not into this
It's apparent that the Animal Collective songwriting philosophy is: have a basic idea and beat it into the ground. It's not entirely without virtue but every. single. song. is intensely repetitive. At first, it was fine but it quickly became maddening.
This was tolerable but I got pretty tired of it by the end.
Sometimes interesting, but this just isn't my aesthetic.
Two weird ones in a row. Giving this a 2, because I wanted to give the other less than 3.
I don’t get this one.
Meh
I can see what the band was aiming at with this album, it’s just that what they ended up with sounds too much like noise to me.
Experimental indie music. Ambitious but didn’t really connect with me emotionally
I want to like them, because I feel like it would make me a more sophisticated music lover. But I didn’t enjoy anything but My Girls. Too dissonant and busy for me
I like some Animal Collective but this album was a bit too abrasive and repetitive for my tastes.
Not really my thing
Never really liked or took an interest in this sort of indie music growing up. It always seemed to be for kids who did things to tell people they'd done it rather than for the sake of doing it. I stand by the younger me and continue to think this sort of electro-indie, where the tracks build towards an underwhelming climax is shallow music. Not a track on this stood out *and* I went back to their most played songs from this album on Spotify to double check I was listening properly.
Meh. Felt like an album about nothing, just kinda sounds and random instruments.
So bad. Extasy fever dream noise.
Periaatteessa ihan mielenkiintoinen kokonaisuus mutta kappaleet meni vähän liian sekamössöksi ja taiteelliseksi jolloin niihin ei tullut kunnon tarttumapintaa
I got bored with this to be honest. cool cover art but it just went on a bit for my liking and didn't really go any where and no stand out tunes.
2.3/5
The production is too sparse. I prefer my electronica more dense and claustrophobic like Massive Attack.
The album cover made me nauseous and the songs were very meh.
Ahm .... Well... No. WTF? I'm neither high nor drunk enough to appreciate this. Another of these questionable entries into the list. I like the album cover that seems to move, though. 1.5/5
There's a lot going on in Merriweather Post Pavilion but I don't think it's particularly cohesive or enjoyable. It's trippy without taking you on a trip, weird without purpose, really just a dull 2.
I guess the authors want me to end my time on this mortal coil. 2/5.
All for recycling but maybe they should have picked a better base layer. One going forward the other in reverse. Nevertheless there is plenty going on.
Vage shit. Te vaag.
Man! Die langgerekte lettergrepen de hele tijd. Pas op het laatst kwam er een beetje vaart in!
I didn't like this. Had hints of indie pop type stuff that I normally do like but it was all too busy. Too much going on. At the risk of sounding like my mum, it was all just noise
Just a bit ‘meh’ really. Enjoyed the album artwork more than the sounds. Think they feel like they’re being clever, but it’s just coming across as generic and blends into the background. Maybe at the time it wasn’t, but today it’s feels like a first draft of something that could go somewhere much more interesting.
Like a fruit machine - lots of noise and lights, lots put into it, don't get much out
This was just noise to me
My co-judge and I had similar first impressions in that we both felt the LP was influenced by Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys. Some of the sampled soundscapes are very innovative and the sort of think I generally like, but when you drop the vocal harmonies on top of them they don't seem to integrate too well. The harmonies and melodies of some songs, like Summertime Clothes, are catchy, but they don't go with the music.
I love the album cover, its an optical illusion appears to be animated and moving, but its actually not. I also love 2000's Indie music and if your Fleet Foxes or Panda Bear fan you would probably like this, but the vocal harmonies here and the dreamy psychedelic sound is not my jam. The vocals by other Indie bands of this era such as Grizzly Bear (no relation to Panda Bear) or say Dirty Projectors are much more enjoyable.
Hipster jamz. I liked this album a lot when I first heard it, now not so much.
I had never listened to this band before, but after reading the description of the album, I was very excited. However, it did not live up to the hype, and felt that it just went on and on.
Drivel.
Peak 2000s indie was not my thing.
Not really into it, might give it a second try
Nah man, not for me. It had nothing I could relate to or vibe with. It’s just a bunch of meh white noise pop. Made no impact. Cool magic eye kinda album cover though.
Mwah, niet mijn ding, beetje te vaag.
A couple of okay tracks, but all in all a pretty rough listen.
Was not a fan. It was not to my taste musically or lyrically.
Bluish good track. Was ok
generally not my style but I listened to the entire album. There were a few that was interesting
2.4⭐
Is the difference between country and rock the metaphors employed? I mean, "my forehead is leaking"? It's a decent album. Listenable. But I'm not convinced that I want to listen to it again.
Wow. This seems like a group lost in a different era. What would it sound like if the Beach Boys took some psychedelics and joined a drum circle in the Octopus' Garden? Interesting, but not very enjoyable.
I found it a bit whiney
Meh. Rates better than the Blues Explosion at least!
I don’t like the sound of this album that much, although it does have a distinctive one. The singers voices were also not that great. Musically, there were great ideas but I was not a big fan of it as a whole
I have a hard time wrapping my head around Animal Collective, I listen to one of their earlier albums a couple of years back and that was aggrivating to me. This isn't so bad, but I just don't get the hype. Just rather annoying sounds that don't strike something meaningful or cool with me.
I can absolutely imagine this being incredible at a concert or anywhere surrounded by hundreds of people on similar drugs. Listening to this alone on my bike? Torture.
EI kyl jotenkin toimi mulle, vaikka pystynkin kuvittelemaan tän johonkin Flown telttalavalle vuonna 2009! En osaa perustella mikä tässä tökkii. Ehken vaa oo valmis viel tälläselle keskinkertaselle dreampop:ille 2/5
Nah
Late Noughties Psychedelia/Pop not really my thing and my first time of listening. I always find Psychedelia to be a little bit Navel Gazing and much more about the bands and their concepts rather than the audience. (Never got how some bands play to each other rather than out to the Audience) not to my taste, even though they are obviously good musicians I found this hard to listen to... I suppose a bit like how I found it hard to listen to YES in the '70's. If I had to choose a favourite I suppose "My Girls" and "Summertime Clothes" have some credit. But let's be honest I am never gonna love this being a child in the 60's and a Teenager during the '70's Punk was my thing and anything longer than 2.5-3 mins in terms of song length was definitely old hippy stuff! I do believe though this album was written and performed for the writers and performers rather than anyone else. Not In my collection I'm Afraid.
Pfff… echt niet.
Didn’t like
Musica densa, bien producida. Muchos sonidos y arreglos hacen música robusta, grandilocuente. El inicio es impactante pero el exceso continúa y se vuelve asfixiante. Creo que termina por saturar.
Meh
2nd listen. Nothing really stands out to me as special.
Listened to the first 4 songs and didn't realised, that it was more than one ... Sounded somewhat replaceable and monotonous. Boring and kind of annoying to me. This album makes me regret giving a 2/5 to oher albums.
Not for me. Not a fan of electronic music.
Not on nearly enough drugs to really enjoy this. I don't really like folk all that much and this is like folk-pop-electronic and it's just not for me.
I don't get it.
Thought this was overrated at the time, opinion hasn't changed listening again.
Put me in a terrible mood
I can appreciate psychedelic pop music, and I'm sure Animal Collective is a great act. I was excited to listen to this record because I saw it hyped as "one of the greatest albums of the '00 decade." Throughout listening to it though, I had very little to be excited about. "My Girls", "Blueish", "Brother Sport" are the defining moments of the album, but beyond that things start to blend and loose track of structure. The electronic vibrato that wavers in the background for every song never seems to dissipate - it's a constant state of drifting. For me, it just overshadows a lot of the other textures trying to cut through. I suppose this what excites the majority of this albums fans though, and this is the type of feeling they look for. It's just not an experience that catches me. I don't need catchy hooks or harmonic melodies to get me interested into the album, but when everybody compares this work to the psychedelic era of The Beach Boys, it's hard not to prepare for that. Overall, a fine work, but nothing I'll revisit. Favorite Track: Blueish Least Favorite: Daily Routine
This is very well crafted, complicated and a little bit too much. Maybe it gets more digestible with a few more listens.
Sounded like 3 alt J songs played at the same time. (Ellie and Ruks)
not for me
First listen really did nothing for me. I think this is one that will need to grow on me. Standouts: Summertime Clothes. Nice mix of interesting sounds.
Credit where credit is due, there are some vibey songs on this album, and this is one of the rare albums on this list that has better lyrics and vocals than instrumental. That being said, all the good songs are packed into the first half, and the rest of the songs are really just annoying noise with some words over them. Favorite track: Bluish
Repetitive and grating.
It’s just noise
It was ok
Liked the sounds and instruments: heard some digeridoo-style noises, liked the bass lines. The vocals or lyric design let me down. And I'm sincerely doubting the digeridoo was anything other than a synth. I dunno. I think I'm learning that 'experimental' usually isn't my genre.
Ethereal and boring. Occasional 60s style, but mostly weird background noises.
cool name. idk if i like the first 15 seconds tho.... i ended up quitting bc it was weirdly stressful
No me hace mucha gracia
I just don't get it. Boring and overrated.
I hated it. I hated it when it came out and I hate it now.
Most songs have no noticeable structure, and all adopt that irritating "dream-sound"; a repetitive, unnatural, synthesized sound that goes throughout the track. I admit, I can see the musical promise in songs like "My Girls" and "Guys Eyes", but these songs sound like they have no cohesive direction to hold them together. I usually like original and I usually like different, but those two qualities alone don't make a song good and this allbum is the perfect example of that. 2/5
4.5
2.5 at best
2/5
Okay-ish.
Not really my thing at all. Very whiney and weird
really only listened to the first track and a half. Not sure what it is, just couldn't get into it. Maybe need the right setting?
just ok wouldn’t listen again though
Very indie... hm.. too indie
If nothing burger was an album.
No
Meh
fuken hate this
It's utterly in love with itself and desperately wants you to love it too. As joyless as it is upbeat. Hipster folkie Dream Theater.
Tipico grupo de sonido extraño con vo sintética, malo, muy malo.
Ich benenne die Liste um in: Hunderte Alben, die du auf keinen Fall hören solltest! So ein Mist!
Weird
I've tried Animal Collective before and it's just to weird for me. Can't even say that I understand what it's going here, maybe I'm just too dumb...
Not for me. 1/5
Exhoey muddled mess with the dynamic range that makes it sound like it was recorded in a cardboard box. One of the very few albums which finished and started to repeat again & I failed to notice. Speaking of failing, this is apparently an experimental album - which is fine as most experiments fail = exhibit A right here folks.
It's junk like this that gives alternative rock/indie a band name. It's dull, repetitive, over produced noise. How it's in the main list baffles me. Didn't bothering finishing the album. The illusion art cover is a bit trippy.
It seems incredible now that this kind of whiny toss was being acclaimed as a masterpiece just a few years ago.
p924. 2009. 1 star. "Pet Sounds" for the new millennium, but lacking the talent or songs. Starts of well but soon becomes repetitive and annoying. Instantly forgettable. And the album cover gives me a headache.
it took nearly a month to finally get through this one and I don't feel enriched for putting in the work
Nah. Not for me.
Awful
This album certainly qualifies as something that can be heard if you play it.
Their eighth album. Pop / Alt Rock. I am 362 albums in and never given a score of 1 to three albums in a row until now. Thanks to Taylor Swift, Frank Ocean and this shite. There is actually some great music out there today and there was in the 2010s too, however it tends to be found under the radar. The stuff that gets spat out in the main from around 2009 onwards is pigs swill. Popular music took a terrible nose dive from this kind of era onwards. Utter bollocks !
I'm listening to track 1 and all I can think is "this is worse than the last fucking album I listened to", and that album was Vulnicura by Bjork - which could be the worst album I've heard yet (admittedly, I only listened to 2 tracks of that album, but I listened to several of her other albums in full so I am sufficiently confident that it wouldn't have a huge uptick). Track 2 of this album is also just as bad. Maybe it gets better, but I'll never know.
Save your time!
2009. Titled after the Maryland venue of the same name, where Portner and Weitz attended concerts in their youth.
not a fan
Какая-то жуть. Действительно. коллектив животных, орущих чёрт знает что
Wow, that album really annoyed me. The electronic effects are simply awful, and the vocals, the screaming, are absolutely terrible. "Also Frightened"—yes, that's me. Electronic music is one of my favorite genres, but "Animal Collective" ruins everything. Wow, "Daily Routine"—what's with that strange keyboard? And that constant "howling" that's probably the vocal part. No, if that's all there is to Animal Collective, then I'm sorry. I guess I'll never listen to them again.
Felt like absolute torture at times
Utterly disengaging tripe…did not need to hear this mess of confused and unharmonious sounds.
Based on its ingredients, I should have liked this, but I didn't... I thought for sure the synth-heavy albums on this list would be 5s, but damn, Robert sure did a great job of finding some astonishingly shitty synth-heavy albums, eh? I guess I expect catchy hooks, moody atmospheres, and/or mathematically mapped melodies with this type of music. This album, however, somehow manages to be spontaneously chaotic and repetitively boring at the same time. Kinda like its cover... it's moving, but it's not... it's flat and shallow with only the illusion of depth... Hard fail for being irritating... and hard jail time for flagrant misuse and wanton abuse of the synthesizer...
I just can't...
Not my kind of listen
Good album. They reminded me of Neon Trees and M83.
Their voices are irritating, and I couldn't get past that to enjoy the album.
Beatless, pretentious trance music with discount beach boys over the top of it. To those wondering how they made these sounds: 1 take an effect pedal (vibrato, phaser) 2 dial all the knobs to 10 3 ??? 4 annoying sound that should have been cut upon discovery by the production. 5 what producer or editing? The runtime on this is too long.
ugh, God, no
Not a fan of experimental/conceptual albums like this.
Not my vibe
This is garbage. I already don’t enjoy shoegaze, but Merriweather Post Pavilion is pretentious and uninteresting. There’s just nothing in the music. The instrumentation and vocals are muted and it is so utterly boring. The lyrics didn’t save it, and neither did the psychedelic angle. Byeeeeee
A really bland album where nothing really stands out. It's just a bunch of random ideas that rarely combine into a coherent vision. The experimentation never really pays off. It was shallow and worst of all, it was a chore to get through. At times it feels like the creators were convinced they had stumbled onto something genius that only made sense to them when high. The worst part is that it's a bad album not because the music is terrible but because it's so uninteresting to endure. I will not be revisiting any of the songs but "Guys Eyes" is the one that I actively didn't mind for the most part.
I couldn't finish this. It's my second time trying. I may try a third time, but I am clearly not the person for this album.
Electro noodle cookie trash.
No. Jarring
Some good immersive sounds but the whole album is held together by reverb. Gets tiresome after half an hour and unfortunately I'm only half way through. Individually some of the tracks weren't actually that bad. But as a collection when I'm praying for it to be over then it can only be a 1 star. I know why the Lion is in a coma.
Very repetitive
not for me
It is all over the place. I cant remember or mumble a single part of any song in the album, its literally all junk sound. I will give it 1 point for trying something different
This is total bobbins - psychedelic nonsense!
2/10… psychedelic pop / freak folk
Not for me
Das war ja nur öde.
Listened to this 3 days ago and I'm still; angry about the time it wasted
Can something be both boring and offensive to your sensibilities? If you are unsure, check out this piece of shit.
yeah this did nothing for me
I’m listening to the last song as I type this. It’s ass. Don’t bother. I wish I didn’t. I get explorative tastes but they also have to sound good, and not like a 5 year old had access to an audacity account and chopped and changed a trance classic. Hahaha just seen Pink Floyd are one of their inspo’s on Spotify not surprised in the slightest
This fucking sucks
This is what Sgt. Peppers would sound like if it was made in the 2000s by far less talented musicians.
Wow. Painful
Not for me. This was a slog to make it through the whole album. Woof.
No me ha llamado
have yet to dislike something this much.
This is really annoying. I've heard of them and had the impression they leaned into twee. This is far worse than twee. Skipped the first few songs after about 30-45 seconds and then bailed on the album. Make it stop.
I vaguely remember My Girls, floating by in some lost forgotten dream, but the moment I stepped into a world of echoey voices with loads of reverb and a non existent rhythm section I knew we were in trouble. Music by and for talentless people, utterly and annoyingly forgettable. Wide berth deadbeats, give it a wide berth.
Not for me
I really didn;t think this was a great album - confused and overly busy production couple with wannabee-Beach Boys vocals.
Woefully unpleasant listen for my tastes. This barely even sounds like music.
Fun Fact! Warren Zevon does not appear on the 1001 albums. John Hiatt? Not a single one. Jackson Browne? Zero albums on this list. Taking up their spots are albums like this. Excruciatingly painful to listen to, every song blends in with each other to the point of sounding like one long annoying song for the entire tracklist. Don't give me the "psychedelic pop" or "experimental pop" crap - the album sounds awful. One of the few albums I've heard that actively hurts your ears. Like it causes pain. How. It takes a special type of album to do that. Would never play it again. It's brutal, the constant keyboard droning, unimaginative lyrics. The only way to enjoy it is if you're on a lethal amount of heroin.
Get this band out of my face fr
"All i can say i wow... wow... because i'm DUMBFOUNDED how this piece of **** ever made it to record, much less a list like the 1001... i gave every song a good go on this one... i wanted to like something about it... obviously, SOMEONE... SOMEWHERE gets this... and thinks it's great... i'm not that guy... i don't hear a single tune on this hockey puck... this group is from Baltimore, and i believe they have privileged backgrounds... at the very end of this record... "Brother Sport" is sort of a tune... if you get this record... please comment and let me know what is good about it... if i never heard this one again... it would be too soon... one star..."
Could only get through half of the album. Nothing spectacular here.
If you wanted to know what a “collective” of dudes who are most likely super high playing with preset drum loops on a Casio keyboard sounds like, congrats your search is over
The first time I listened to Merriweather Post Pavilion, I thought "I do not like this." Then I listened a second time and my opinion did not change.
I'm probably not on enough drugs for this.
Too much. That’s really the only way I can sum this up. It’s all over the place, and I never got a handle on what their sound is even supposed to be. Instead of feeling layered and lush, it just felt messy and overwhelming. I’m sure the band absolutely worships at the altar of Brian Eno, which is why they made this list, but for me it was just noise without direction. Pass.
Just couldn't get into this one ☹️
I found this album very grating and repetitive. Usually after multiple listens I start liking albums more but not in this case. If they ever find out if they are all the things that are outside of them I won't be around to hear about it. Maybe a 2 but I am really trying to get the most out of this low resolution scale.
This sucked... And it sucked for way too long.
This was one of the most grating things I've ever listened to. Skipped the last two songs, and honestly after you've heard the first song you've basically heard them all...
Not for me
Really messy, don't like this at all
00’er elektronisk musik a la spleen united
didn’t even finish it was so fucking boring.
Have tried many times but never got the hype with this album. Dense layering of synth textures and rhythms echoing around a big reverby space with all the digital bells and whistles thrown into the mix, combined with breathy multi tracked vocals weaving in and out of each other among the synth leads. It's a trippy sound that floats and jangles and pulses in a bright sunny haze through a set of meandering strangely baggy seemingly (but not actually) structureless songs. There some cool sounding stuff in here, but they remain an emperor's new clothes band for me.
Not sure why this made the list
You know when you yawn during a song and it somehow makes the music sound just a little bit off? Thats what this whole album sounds like. Best: In the Flowers Worst: My Girls
Pyrkimys on lisätä kokonaisuuteen tarpeeksi melodiaa, jotta musiikkityylin faneilla olisi tekosyy yliarvostaa eksperimentaatiota. Välillä bändi lähentelee onnistumista, mutta en mahda itselleni mitään, tyyli vain ärsyttää, enkä pysty kuuntelemaan enemmän kuin on pakko. 2-
Monotonous
I couldn’t wait for this to end
The coolest thing about this album was the cover, which did impress me with the weird, shifting leaf motif. That was it. The music sounds like a Beach Boys tribute band, but without any soul, no hooks, nothing but repetitive and boring rounds of singing with stuff going on in the background. This is the kind of album I would imagine playing to clear the room, as it seems to set itself out to deliberately be annoying. One dismal star I'm afraid.
Another new one. Kinda like noise mixed with MGMT and Temu Pink Floyd... a little Beach Boys (Also Frightened.) I cant say I enjoyed it though. I was keen to have this one over with after the first two tracks (the second having 61mil listens).
I couldn’t even make it half way through this turd. WTF is this? Lol
I still don't get why hipsters fucking loved this band
I didn't even finish this. Why is this on here? What is so great about this album that it deserves to be on this list. boring.
An overhyped experiment that mostly feels like being trapped on a musical carousel you can’t get off. The album drowns in high-pitched vocals, endless repetition, and layers upon layers of sounds that never really go anywhere. It plays more like a chaotic noise collage than anything melodic or dynamic. I actually found myself getting annoyed as it went on, and that rarely happens when I listen to music. 1/5
Utrolig irriterende. Vet ikke hva man må gå på for å høre på dette, men det er neppe billig...
Fuck this band
By far my favourite part of the past hour was when my earphones disconnected from my phone for no reason
Got on my tits very quickly
the reason indie gets a bad rap
Worse than Coldplay.
Insupportable.
Did not get this at all
This is truly awful, probably the worst I've had in 911 albums.
Didn’t do anything for me and I don’t understand why would have such a big impact.
Too psychedelic for me
Strange alternative band. No songs I’m crazy about.

Hard to pay attention to and when I did I was annoyed. Pretentious. The loops were boring, just some synth sounds. No hooks or even melody to the vocals. Felt like a pisstake of MGMT. It felt like they were trying way to hard and forgot they were making music along the way.
I am genuinely surprised this album made the list. It feels like it is scraping the lower end of the 1001 for me. I understand that Animal Collective are deliberately aiming for something different and boundary pushing. There is clearly ambition here. But as a listening experience it just does not land. The songs feel repetitive and cluttered, with layers of sound competing rather than complementing each other. Instead of creating atmosphere, it becomes an indistinct blur. At times there are glimpses of something interesting underneath the noise, but the production feels so overloaded that it buries any real hook or emotional connection. It simply did not click with me. Favourite song: No More Runnin was decent enough and the most listenable for me. Least favourite: Daily Routine was particularly hard work. Guys Eyes had potential, but the clashing layers turned it into a chaotic mess. Album artwork: Very cool. The optical illusion cover is easily one of the most memorable aspects of the whole package
Made for Pitchfork journalists.
Non fa per me
I didn’t finish this. Life is too short
DO NOT WANT.
As a lifelong fan of indie/alt rock, I should not only like this album, I should love it. In the indie rock snob world this album might as well be sergeant fucking pepper. But I do not like this album. Couldn't wait for this tunelessness to be over
En kakofoni av ljud/oljud. Nix, det är inget bra och bara påfrestande att lyssna på.
I almost considered quitting listening to this list because of this album. But I'll be strong.
1. I have a general bias against electro-music, so it’s a no from me.
31/12/24 I honestly wanted this album to end quicker than it did.
Electro-pop at its worst. How people can describe this as "psychedelic" is beyond me. I can only assume that they have been sold inferior acid.
Didn't like it in 2009, don't like it now
one of those experimental collection of noises albums I just wanted to finish
fucking dire
These electronic albums all sound the same to me
I waivered about giving this album a 2. There were small parts of these songs that I enjoyed, but very shortly after that it would get overwhelming and weird again. Felt like discount MGMT.
Ei toimi yhtään tämä ulina.
Sounds like the Beach Boys on acid. Way, way too much acid. One halfway decent track, Summertime Clothes, but otherwise an effect-heavy mess, much of it barely music. Not much enjoyment to be found here.
Not for me
It's the tribute band known as the Boring Beach Boys. At least to me. Really really really tedious. Each song is one idea over and over and over. And each song is that same idea. An album of one idea. Over and over.
The only interesting thing about this album was the optical illusion on the cover.
I did not care for this one... maybe being high is the pre-requisite. Messy, confusing and too long.
DNL
Way too much work to listen to this. No thanks
I did not enjoy
Indie pop? Indie rock? Experimental? I don't know what to call this music. It sure is a unique sound they have made throughout the album. While it was an experience its not something that appeals to me.
Nothing makes me want to listen to music less than when it is deemed "experimental pop". This album goes a long way toward confirming that bias.
When you like the music in the ads better than the actial album you are listining you know tha music is 💩
Yeah this shit sucks hahah
There is nothing here that is anywhere remotely worth my time.
Not for me. Thought it was terrible
Not my thing
This one is going to the dungeon. The first song almost tricked me that this might be alright, then my girls came on and it's all down from there. Cool, you want house, really makes you think. Will I listen to again: 0%
This album irritates me. It's weird, I know, but the urge to skip this was immense.
This album has two fans, people who abuse psychedelics and hipsters with a superiority complex who pretend to like this shit to seem unique and cool. You know that old wives tale about your cousins mate who did too much acid and fried his brain into permanently thinking he's an orange? This is what I imagine was playing during that dudes trip, and not in a good way. Summertime Clothes is the only enjoyable song on the album, I came back to listen a second time for that song (it's actually good) - but it doesn't redeem the rest of the album, which is tainted, annoying, uninspired, hipster garbage. Standout awful tracks include: Daily Routine, where I thought I was actually enjoying the song until it just suddenly turned into 2 minutes of dumb noise effects. Just end the song dude. Taste, where the singer decides to repeat the same thing for over 30% of the song. Yeah sick dude we get it. Brother Sport, where I couldn't even understand what the fuck the vocalist was saying, it sounded like a completely different language. This album doesn't need to be an hour, most of the songs runtime on this thing are littered with repeating vocals or annoying long drawn synths that go on for ages. It was a dread listening to this and I hope I never have to be subjected to it ever again.
Not a bit fan of pop music or experimental sound, so this was a pretty big miss for me.
Oh.... no. Not for me. Really unpleasant and discordant.
Not really my thing
did not enjoy
Just can't make it
Wacky, lots of sounds, but to me sounds scratchy and chaotic. Not my thing.
Da fehlt mir das Verständnis und die avantgardische Ader. Ich höre nichts.
I still don't get this album. It's like adults making music with kids toys.
Not a big fan didnt like most of the songs, they were pretty boring, wasn’t appealing
I had heard of them before but had never listened to them. Now I never will again.
Repetitive electric noise.
that got boring, then unbearable very quickly
Nope If you want this stuff, try Mercury Rev debut and Mercury prize winner
I guess I don't like Animal Collective.
About a year ago I watched a video of two guys doing a bracket of the best indie songs of all time. In the end My Girls by Animal Collective won out. Intrigued, I excitedly listened to the GOAT indie song that I've been missing out on. That was when I realized the people making the video had terrible taste. My opinion has not changed after listening to this album in full.
The Beach Boys' Smile run through a colour photocopier a few times. It's pleasant enough, and they make an interesting racket, but nothing really stuck. It feels like they hit upon a distinctive sound and made everything that way. Which is fine if that sound resonates with you I guess, but this got very samey very quickly, and the songs didn't really grab me.
Terrible
Although I can hear why some like it or find it interesting, it just doesn’t do much for me.
"Oh, is it over? Thank Christ."
Nope. Not for me. Not even a little. It was like the same song for 14 tracks.
Words cannot describe how much I do not miss the era of synthpop at all. If I'm to believe the Wiki of this album, apparently this is the one that started it all--so it's not a shock that I hate this shit. Guys Eyes is one of the worst songs in this entire book. Good riddance to an entirely forgettable era of music, and I'm looking forward to never hearing this album again.
Nope. Music should soothe, not jar. Anyone who produces music that jars is just being a knob.
Not for me
Som att spela tre olika Håkan Hellström album samtidigt över varandra.
pretentious bullshit...
I made it through the first 3 tracks before I gave up. I was surprised when there was almost a hint of an actual song buried in the third track, but it wasn't enough to keep me listening. This poor excuse for music apparently got near-universal acclaim. Once again I find myself at odds with critics. Whatever they see in this, I sure don't get it. Inexplicably to me, Pitchfork and Slant Magazine rated the second track here as the "Best Song of 2009". That's right, the same year Jay-Z released Empire State of Mind, this rubbish was picked over it. Many singles were released in 2009 and somehow this was picked as the best song. To name a few from albums I know fairly well, Pet Shop Boys released 3 singles and Depeche Mode released 4 in 2009. Every single one of those songs is much better than this nonsense. Maybe under the influence of powerful drugs, this actually seemed like a contender. Wikipedia says this album's sound influenced music of the next decade. Maybe that's why I don't like a lot of current music.
Absolut schrecklich
In a nutshell: unmemorable Skip this album and listen to Hot Chip, Art vs Science or Modest Mouse instead. Overall: 1/10
Just don’t get it. Cannot figure out which direction this album wish to take. Getting on my nerves
I was actually getting irritated by this.
Irritating
1.5
It was indie music and it was bad. Skip it.
Boring
Chaps, not every song needs to be 5 minutes..... the start of a song shouldn't sound like the middle and the end..... its boring and this is what this album is
No
Never able to feel a groove on this one. Nothing catchy; treble laden. Still trying to discern why this album made the list.
This albums is so bad, it’s so annoying and just bad instrumentation. I really don’t see why people like this.
I feel like my ears have been assaulted.
