Enjoyed

Saw these guys live. Tore the roof off.

Hey my birth year! I immediately like the genre :) Soft Punk? lol that's not a thing is it? Reminds me of I Wanna be Sedated by the Ramones. Dude this album was fucking great! 5 stars.

Great example of early punk

it's just a great album.

Never heard of these guys, but why did everyone waste so much airtime sucking off the Sex Pistols rather than elevating the Undertones to a wider audience? So good.

Own and love this album. Lived live with this band. Some of the best sounds of their generation.

Love this one!

LOVED this album! How is it that I've never heard them before? 16 tracks in 35 minutes is perfect for this old man. I wish I would have heard this back in my middle school days when it was released. It certainly would have been one of those unforgettable albums of my youth. Now it's an unforgettable album of my elderly years.

I don’t always agree with albums being on a list of ones you should listen to, but this one definitely deserves it. The perfect distillation of late seventies punk.

The Undertones’ self-titled album is an explosion of infectious energy and catchy melodies that, while not presenting significant innovations for the punk rock genre, perfectly captures the essence of the music of the 1970s and early 1980s. The simplicity and authenticity of their songs reveal an impressive ability to create memorable tracks that remain relevant even after several decades. The Undertones are a band that, while operating within the traditional parameters of punk, demonstrate a creative potential that is worth following in the future.

Fun Buzzcocky punky power pop music.

This is a lovely album. Very playful and young tone.I liked it

The Beach Ramones.

Derry represent! Fun, infectious, silly pop punk with some timeless classics included. Fuckin belter hi

Very original band and sound. No mistaking the sound of Fergal Sharky's voice. Brilliant, takes me back to an era I loved.

Slapped better than I anticipated!

Is this punk?

Great rock

That was great! Why haven't I heard it before? Better than the Ramones and all those other guys.

It's just classic british punk, what more could you want.

This album is among the most perfect blends of punk rock's drive and aggression with pure pop instincts, all made by Northern Irish hobbits. Essential.

Einfach, schnell, laut, gut!

Brilliant, so it is.

An absolute belter

A perfect little album. Songs about chocolate, girls and growing up. Will resonate with most generations in the early stages of coming of age.

So freaking fun and some full on certified Slappers

This album is dope! I've heard Family Entertainment on random play a bunch, but this is the first time hearing a full Undertones album and it was great pretty much the whole way through. 4.5/5

This album rules. I was surprised to see that we already listened to a later Undertones album earlier, and have no recollection of it. Apparently I thought it was decent but nothing special. This one rules though. 4.5/5

Clásico instantáneo Lleno de estupendas canciones más allá de las clásicas, Jump boys es un buen ejemplo. Get over you (el segundo single del disco), True confessions o Listening in, también. Otros discos de 1979, el año del \"Disco sucks\" y también de maravillas como: JOY DIVISION - Unknown Pleasures, THE CLASH - London calling, VAN MORRISON - Into the music, NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE - Rust never sleeps y Live Rust, AC/DC - Highway to hell, PAUL COLLINS BEAT - The Beat, THE CURE - Three imaginary boys, THE POLICE - Regatta de blanc y zenyattà Mondatta, THE B-52'S - The B-52's, GRAHAM PARKER - Squeezing out sparks, THE KNACK - Get the knack, The wall de Pink Floyd, Armed Forces de Elvis Costello & The Attractions, We Are Family de Sister Sledge, Look Sharp! de Joe Jackson, Spirits Having Flown de Bee Gees, Breakfast in America de Supertramp, Y de The Pop Group, Voulez-Vous de ABBA , Bad Girls de Donna Summer, Lodger de David Bowie, Discovery Electric Light Orchestra, Exposed y Platinum de Mike Oldfield, Fear of Music Talking Heads, Off the Wall de Michael Jackson, Quadrophenia deThe Who, Reggatta de Blanc de The Police, Prince de Prince, Damn the Torpedoes de Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers , One Step Beyond... de Madness, The Specials de The Specials, Journey Through \"The Secret Life of Plants\" de Stevie Wonder, Metal Box de Public Image Ltd., Risque de Chic, Real to Real Cacophony y Life in a day de Simple Minds

Raw pop to my veins.

So important, but also so good. Not the first punk album, nor the best, but a keystone in the story of guitar music, in the UK in particular.

This was so good, I love this sound (surf-punk). It’s like Dead Kennedys were in a good mood. I had not heard these guys before and was slightly expecting a ska band with their name

That is some genuine and authentic Punk. Quite enjoyed replastering a ceiling to that today.

Que bonitola sorpresa está bands

“Razor sharp post punk anthems” Makes me feel like I’m 13 discovering punk rock for the first time.

Fun! Such authentic energy for a 70’s punk band

Teenage dreams, so hard to beat.

Solid album start to finish. Great songs, well produced.

Simply superb. Derry's finest

It’s got Teenage Kicks - 5 stars.

Who can argue with this energy? I've been hearing a lot from about about Feargal Sharkey over the last year. Now I get it.

Damn, just a few albums after Dookie where I had to point out that pop punk isn't really my thing, I get this one (never heard it before). This is the pop punk album to beat forever after, I think. 16 songs in 35 minutes so nothing overstays it's welcome. Perfectly fun and danceable. Doesn't take itself seriously and only the necessary amount of angst. Literally no complaints, this album is fun as hell.

Thought this was great and enjoyed all the songs

Early punk. The instrumentals reminded me a lot of the Strokes. The vocals not so much.

This band (and Buzzcocks) convinced me to persevere with punk. I realised it could be fun and playful and smart, and didn't always have to be so serious. There is a bit of filler here (Billy's Third, for example) and I have heard Teenage Kicks too many times to even know if I actually like it any more, but any album that has Here Comes The Summer, Get Over You and Jimmy Jimmy on it has to get 5 stars. Energetic. Smart lyrics. So much fun.

Four stars for Teenage Kicks alone. Plus one for Jimmy Jimmy. The rest is a bonus. But WHAT a bonus. You can see where Supergrass lifted their best ideas from.

Tracklist: "Family Entertainment" "Girls Don't Like It" "Male Model" "I Gotta Getta" "Teenage Kicks" "Wrong Way" "Jump Boys" "Here Comes the Summer" "Get Over You" "Billy's Third" "Jimmy Jimmy" "True Confessions" Musical Style and Production: "The Undertones" is known for its raw, unpolished, and stripped-down punk sound. The album was produced by Roger Bechirian, who did an excellent job of capturing the band's frenetic energy. The music is characterized by fast tempos, simple but infectious guitar riffs, and John O'Neill's distinctive, melodic guitar work. The simplicity of the instrumentation is a testament to the band's DIY ethos and their ability to make something great with limited resources. Lyrics and Themes: The Undertones' lyrics often revolve around the themes of adolescent angst, the frustrations of youth, and the awkwardness of teenage romance. "Teenage Kicks," one of the album's standout tracks, is a perfect example of this, with its infectious refrain, "Teenage dreams, so hard to beat." Other tracks like "Get Over You" and "Male Model" reflect the band's humorous and sometimes sardonic take on these themes. Standout Tracks: "Teenage Kicks": A timeless punk anthem, the song's simple but unforgettable melody and relatable lyrics have made it an enduring classic. "Get Over You": This track is another highlight, featuring a catchy chorus and an infectious, punky energy. "Jimmy Jimmy": Known for its upbeat tempo and clever lyrics, it's another fan favorite. "Here Comes the Summer": A contrast to the typical punk sound, this song exudes a carefree, summery vibe. Impact and Legacy: "The Undertones" had a significant influence on the punk and new wave movements. "Teenage Kicks" is often regarded as one of the greatest punk rock singles ever recorded. The Undertones' knack for writing infectious pop-punk melodies with punk sensibilities helped shape the genre's evolution. The album is a blueprint for countless bands that followed. Overall Evaluation: "The Undertones" is a classic punk album that has stood the test of time. It's a concise and energetic collection of songs that perfectly captures the spirit of youth and rebellion. While it may not be the most groundbreaking or experimental punk album, its simple and effective approach to songwriting and performance is its strength. The Undertones' debut remains a must-listen for anyone interested in the punk and new wave genres, offering an engaging snapshot of the late 1970s music scene. In summary, "The Undertones" is a landmark album that showcases the band's ability to craft memorable pop-punk tunes with an irreverent edge. It's an essential addition to any punk or new wave music collection and a testament to the enduring power of youthful energy and rebellion in music.

Never heard of this band before today and I regret it. This is a really fun album and I will be adding this to the list of albums I will listen to. What I love about this project is finding new bands such as this.

Teenage Kicks! What a damn classic. Love this whole record. The blueprint for teenage angst punk rock.

This is a fantastic (and classic) debut album. Great punk- and garage rock with melodic vocals and dazzling hooks. Too bad several of the early singles (like Teenage Kicks) are not on it. So this is an exception to the rule that bonus tracks are a bummer. Listen to the even better experience of a re-release/extended version of the album and get the six star treatment.

Was really good as well, kinda reminds me of those old high school movies 5/5

Punky with a definite rock and roll influence, I only knew a couple of tracks but had to give this a second listen.

Fun music and lyrics!

A straight forward 70s punk album. Enjoyable. Five stars because it was refreshing after the last album i listened to.

Does it deserve the 5 stars I’m going to give it? Maybe not quite. It’s a solid 4.5 but I’m a sucker for punk and pop-punk so it gets bumped up.

Classic punk rock record. The difference between this album and The Buzzcocks is that The Undertones seem to be having fun and have zero pretension in their view of the world. Not sure there's a single bad track on this record.

Fun pop-punk from back in the day. This is how it's done, Green Day!

An important album in both punk history and Irish music history. Teenage kicks is one of the most flawless pop punk songs ever written and the rest of the album is just as strong!

This was really fun. It reminded me of 90s pop punk.

What a brilliant album, thoroughly enjoyed listening to it

Classic punk rock with a lot of energy. Liked it quite a lot.

16 songs in 34 minutes? Love it. Peel was right about Teenage kicks, remains one of the most perfect songs of all time.

I’ve never heard of them before, but this was such a fun album!

Finally a song for me, Jimmy Jimmy. Really enjoyed this album

9/10 simple, but that’s the way fun, punky brit-pop goes

Yes one of the crown jewels of punk pop. Very little to add to this which is an album I originally got on a cheap portugese grey import market vinyl and has been a joy ever since. While Teenage Kicks might not be the best song ever (in that vein I would go for Another Girl, Another Planet by The Only Ones) it is definitely top ten.

Raw energy, simple short tunes and Feargal's unmistakable voice I loved them when I was a kid and still do now. This has quite a few solid hits and one of the greatest songs of all time (Teenage Kicks). Although I prefer the later albums this is where it began and even the cover is a bold statement. Simply one of the best.

Absolutely jam packed album. fantastic

очень хорошо :))))) люблю англичан бодренько

A legendary album with one of the best songs ever written included. Great range of songs that have a real kick

Dang I liked this album. I hadn’t heard of them. After finishing the album I listened to it again and then looked at their other stuff. Kind of a rocking poppy punky style that was light and fun. Neat

epic, a must own.. 5 stars is not enough.

I really enjoyed this one!

Oh, every different flavour of yes! So this is a brilliant album. Northern Irish. Equally angry as joyful. An almost perfect rock album. The only criticism I could level at it is that it doesn't include "It's going to happen".

It was fun

Let's go baby. The drums on Family Entertainment is the big hook. A collection of grooving, uptempo old school Brit punk.

This is one of the reasons I come to this site! An amazing band I’ve never heard of, becoming something I want to listen to repeatedly

Yeah, this one’s special.

Interesting fresh sound.

Honestly one of the best discoveries I’ve had going through these albums. This is absolutely my shit.

Very cool old-school punk album. Sounds a lot like the first Clash album.

Exactly what I want from early punk

Great great album

Initial thought: how many songs?! Good job The Undertones are ace... and many of them are short anyhow. Great fun rattling through this lot, it flew by. I love it.

great album, don't think there was a song I didn't like really

awesome!!

Classic, crisp and snappy punk tunes with witty lyrics. A perfect example of intelligent melodic punk

Never heard of this band before. Catchy… really fun! Favorite track: Get Over You. But I enjoyed the whole album. This sounds more modern to me than 1979. Lots of little musical surprises scattered throughout. Love the lead singer’s vocals. Definitely adding this to my library!

Очень бодрый альбом и современно звучит! Легко могу представить его в саундтреке Тони Хоука, хотя он, вероятно, там уже есть. Очень классные песни, сразу хочется и танцевать и подпевать. И тут есть тинейдж кикс!!!

I Gotta Getta – perfect bass drum. Rhythmically offset lyrics – first song is a gem. For 1979 wow.

Clásico emocional.

One of my all time favorites

Such a distinct yet immediately recognizable guitar sound. That vocally warble is great. Love this

Old Skool Punk Rock

A lot of fun!! The type of old school punk I really enjoy

Somewhere at the intersection of late 70s British punk and Cheap Trick’s teen-inclined pop rock, comes this album that feels like it’s getting to a proto-pop punk sound and nicely replaces the anger and looseness of some of their contemporaries with some more hooks and teenage angst and horniness and stuff that actually all kind of clicks. Could arguably do with more songs being developed out and less tiny tracks being on the thing, but hey, you wouldn’t be making proto-pop punk if you didn’t do it that way. Mostly I just can’t be too down on something that sounds so much like a bunch of music I do like.

pretty enjoyable. 16 songs in 35 minutes is kinda insane.

C’était pas mal !

For a band I know mostly for 1 song (Teenage Kicks) this is neither a revelation or a disappointment, it only demonstrates that the band has at least 1 full album of songs of approximately the same quality and the same bouncy energy as that song. Feargal Sharkey's expressive vocals go a long way towards preventing this from becoming bland and forgettable. Good, breezy fun. Does it need to be heard before you die? Probably not, but I'm glad I did.

Containing the perfect pop song according to John Peel, and it's difficult to argue. This album would still be an awesome listen even without that gem, it's full of energy and enough variety to keep it interesting and fresh. Superb disk.

I love British punk but this doesn’t stand out

A fun bunch of down the middle brit-punk, like the Clash without the extra flair and artistry

Some fun early punk. I like it.

Really good, fuzzy, power pop album that doesn't try to do too much, each song gets in and gets out quickly, and the songs are breezy and lightweight. Simple and uncluttered and it hits the sweet spot for me.

Only knew Teenage Kicks, which, what a perfect song. The whole thing is just full of fun, melodic, punky pop rock, very Buzzcocks and Ramones-esque.

Pretty rocking

Liked it. It's pretty generic which I usually deduct points for but I fear my rating system is quite flawed

Excellent early punk album. Fits right into my vibe.

Весёлая панкушка.

There's nothing better on a sunny Sunday afternoon than listening to noisy upbeat songs about incest and teenage sexual frustration. This is a naïve and garage-band punk sound that I can't help but enjoy. I was just left asking if there is enough in this to rank it up against some of the greats in this list. It's simplistic and noisy, but its also raw and expressive. It also has teenage kicks on it, which now classed as an all-time classic. I suppose the basic question is: did I enjoy the album? And furthermore: Would I have liked to seen this band live? My answers are cautiously "Yes" and, emphatically "Yes".

This was solid punk rock - guy sounds like Jello Biafra.

De estas cosas pioneras que todos citan y nunca encuentro el momento paras escuchar, tampoco vi sus discos jamás en una tienda. 16 temas en menos de 35 minutos. Muy bueno, me guardo: "Family Entertainment", "Male Model", "I Gotta Getta", "Teenage Kicks", "Wrong Way", "Jimmy Jimmy" y "True Confessions".

Forgot to rate this one so it's not entirely fresh, but I think I actually kinda enjoyed it. The vocals were unusual, but I did quite like the style. Clearly not super memorable because I can't remember anything specific (~a week later) besides "Teenage Kicks" which I've heard a thousand times. Generous 4 because I know I vibed with it at the time, should probably be a 3 but I'm in a good mood.

Great album!

Good tunes, it so much my style thx

Perfekt smørhul mellem punk og new wave. Jeg kunne virkelig godt lide den

Really dug this

I cannot recall a punk album so full of fun and joy.

enjoyable w chuj dluge ale przyneimije nie usypialam troche lame te teksty sa

Nice and short. Still a little repetitive despite it being so short.

Lindo punk rock! Me gustó y seguí escuchando su discografía.

The Undertones are incredibly consistent. I feel the same way about this album as I did about Hypnotised.

I wonder how the average rating for this would be if 'Teenage Kicks' wasn't included in the subsequent releases of the album forevermore (along with 3 other tracks). For the record, this album originally had a run time of just under half an hour, despite what most reviews are claiming. I'm sure the slightly longer version with their singles included is better, so in favour of fairly rating the original tracklist, I will rate this before checking out any added tracks (which I certainly will).

At first blush I was surprised by this "punk" album until I just let the pop wash over me. The punk bands of the era would eventually migrate to this pop sound in a few years, The Undertones were just ahead of the times.

Variety: 3 Adequacy: 4 Listenability: 5 Uniqueness: 3 Emotionality: 3 = 3.6 rounded up to a 4 "I got a baby's brain and an old man's heart/ Took eighteen years to get this far/ Don't always know what I'm talkin' about/ Feels like I'm livin' in the middle of doubt" The Undertones are a band that I used to see on a ton of lists when I was really getting into punk and post punk stuff, and I most certainly heard "Teenage Kicks" on a compilation before I ever heard this album. I have good memories of this one, but like so many it has been some time since I've heard anything on it aside from the one song they are most known for. THE TRACKS Side one "Family Entertainment" - The slightly sneering vocals contrast well with the bright and chugging guitars. The nervous rising guitar line and the deceptively dark lyrics ( a little edgelordy, but...) give this one its edge. Otherwise, the ringing guitar line and simple but effective Ramones-ish melody feel very light. Just ignore those lyrics and crank it up. "Girls Don't Like It" - Easy, breezy and straight to the point. Teenage sexual frustration has been a deep well for rock music, and these guys are definitely not above dipping in for a short drink. "Male Model" - This one manages to make just about an entire song based around a Ramones chant format, but at the detriment of any of those sweet sweet melodic hooks. Points for effort, but less or this please. "I Gotta Getta" - This is more like it. We get two verses about teenage self doubt and misery, but the window dressing couldn't be more lovely. The organ, the jangly guitar opening, and the backing vocals are some nice ear candy. "Teenage Kicks" - These guys know their audience. More sexual frustration, but this time a bit sweeter. Only just a little though. The handclaps along with the guitar and vocal melodies put this in the top tier. It's no wonder this one was their signature tune. It's up there with Cheap Trick's "Surrender". Pop perfection with just a bit of edge. "Wrong Way" - The nervous energy coming off this one, and the organ bits are very New Wave-forward. Just slow it slightly down and add some synths in there, maybe add a verse or two and you're not a million miles from one of the harder songs by The Cars. Too short, but less to criticize I guess. "Jump Boys" - What an opening. What exactly are these "jump boys" you might ask. Hell if I know, but I seems to maybe be about those guys who are all talk, and no game maybe? I think we all knew guys like this in high school. Full of stuff to like. The driving beat adds some rhythmic variety, and the vocal hooks are a plenty. "Here Comes The Summer" - Throwback lyrics that wouldn't be out of place on an early 60s surf track. This one can't quite help but come across as a bit sarcastic though maybe given where these guys are from. I cant imagine much surfing goes on up there. Maybe it's legit aspirational on their part though? There's definitely some dark humor in some of these songs, so I'm leaning towards the former. Either way, its a short and enjoyable. The organ was a nice touch. Side two "Get Over You" - I'd say this hits on combination of longing and confusion, and does a fine job of it. These guys seem like experts at not overstaying their welcome, and once again we're in and out before we've barely had a chance to take it all in. This one's a bit of a burner with the echoey vocals and the guitar taking the wheel. "Billy's Third" - The chorus on this one felt awkward and clunky. The bridge compensates though, and the instruments are the saving grace. "Jimmy Jimmy" - More dark lyrics hidden under the almost cheerful facade of the music. Catchy stuff though, so I'm fine ignoring the tragedy. "True Confessions" - The most wildly divergence yet, sound wise. More possible surf influence with the drumming, and the oddly robotic vocals. Devo meets the Surfaris. I dig it. "(She's A) Runaround" - More surf influence on another tale of teenage confusion. Fine stuff, but not enough hooks. I WANT MY HOOKS! "I Know a Girl" - A great thing about this album is you don't have to wait long for the hooks to retutn. . Back right into the swing of things with more memorably catchy goodness. "Listening In" - I restarted this opening several times before getting into the song proper, which delivers on the promise of that opening. One that even a band like The Replacements would be envious of. This compares favorably with a lot of some of the better 80s jangle pop. "Casbah Rock" - Shades of "Wild Thing" here. This one sounds like an early demo that never got re-recorded, and hardly worth inclusion at it's :47 run time. Wish I could sub in one of the bonus tracks here but already taking liberties by using the re-release for the review as it is. Any would do, but maybe "She Can Only Say No" would be my choice. It oddly prefigures The Violent Femmes sound years before they would even form. Or "One Way love" which steals rather shamelessly from both "Out of LImits" by The Markets and "Last Train to Clarksville" by The Monkees ( at the same time!) but t does so with aplomb. HIGHLIGHTS - "Family Entertainment" - "Girls Don't Like It" - "I Gotta Getta" - "Teenage Kicks" - "Wrong Way" - "Jump Boys" - "Here Comes The Summer" - "Get Over You" - "True Confessions" - "I Know a Girl" MIDLIGHTS - "Male Model" - "Billy's Third" - "(She's A) Runaround" LOWLIGHTS - "Casbah Rock" ( a low blow, sure, but they made the choice of their own free will to include it. FINAL THOUGHTS Two of my favorite things in rock music are the British post-punk era of around '77-'82', and the Power Pop boom, which that overlapped with. The Undertones feel to me like a great synthesis of the two9. You get the DIY, homegrown, rough around the edges amateurishness, and back to basics rock energy combined with a focus on hooks, melody, and pure pop craftsmanship. And there are some KILLER melodies on this. They are definitely more on the punk side of the equation though with their buzzing guitars, and warbly, sometimes snotty vocals. No idea if they were fans or not, but stuff like The Undertones and fellow Northern Ireland natives Stiff Little Fingers seem like a direct link to Green Day, and the swath of pop punk bands from the late 80s and 90s. The nervous, jangly guitar work leans in the direction of a lot of New Wave acts, but this albums sits pretty squarely in power pop territory for me, even if its more leather and shitkicking boots than feathered hair and button downs. There are also plenty of nods backwards towards 60s garage stuff, and a complete lack of embarrassment about diving fully into the hooks and melodies a lot of their punk contemporaries disdained. Not to get too repetitive, but I'd say these guys have way more in common with The Ramones and Cheap Trick than The Sex Pistols. It's bubblegum pop, but with the smoothed edges rebuilt and reinforced with attitude and nervous sexual energy. None of it's too deep, but damn is it nice to wade around in. PLAYLIST ALTERATIONS - Let's drop that last track and throw in all the cd rerelease bonus tracks instead, and put that sucker on shuffle. FURTHER LISTENING - Ramones by The Ramones - Damned Damned Damned by The Damned - Inflammable Material by Stiff Little Fingers - Love Bites by Buzzcocks - Cheap Trick by Cheap Trick - Kerplunk by Green Day - Guitar Romantic by The Exploding Hearts

Pure adolescent chaos in the best way: jangly, bouncy, and fueled by the kind of bad decisions that start with “they’re not checking IDs.” Smelled like cigarettes, tasted like Guinness, and sprinted by before it could wear out its welcome. Punk that would rather flirt than lecture.

Very good early punk

A fun, punky ride. Listened twice, quite pleasant. Nothing better than Teenage Kicks on the album though, mind.

Short, snappy, catchy pop punk songs. What's not to like. Think I might've preferred hypnotised to this as a whole, but it's hard to deny that teenage kicks isn't the best track from both albums. Bonus 0.5 points for my namesake in the band 4

Чудовий панк альбом. Коротенький, динамічний, вистачає хороших пісень

I listened to this and I thought it was good. Nothing else on the album can quite hit the high point of “Teenage Kicks”. But this is one of those albums where I can imagine being there at the time and being quite a rush.

Late 79s rock. Fun, high-energy pop punk.

Yea, it’s down the pipe pop punk but it’s down pretty damn well. I had fun, there were some good bouncy riffs and they did it in the 70’s so I’m gonna go ahead and score this 4 stars

Family Entertainment - 5/5 Girls Don't Like It - 4/5 Male Model - 4/5 I Gotta Getta - 4/5 Wrong Way - 4/5 Jump Boys - 5/5 Here Comes the Summer - 3/5 Billy's Third - 5/5 Jimmy Jimmy - 5/5 True Confessions - 3/5 (She's A) Runaround - 3/5 I Know a Girl - 5/5 Listening In - 4/5 Casbah Rock - no rating Average score: 4.2/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ i saw someone call these guys the Irish version of Ramones and now I can't unhear it i've heard the album Hypnotised by this group not too long ago. hard to say which i like best, as my enjoyment is nearly the same for both; i liked them, but didn't love them. still a pretty fun listen tho

Some fun pop punk. Most of the songs are merely decent, but Teenage Kicks, Here Comes the Summer and Get Over You just about push it to a four. That and Fergal Sharkey's environmental campaigning.

Never heard before but I like the vibe of this one. Some real bops; I managed to get my rebounder time in while listening to this one today. For the most part I like the almost rushy feeling of the tracks. Also for the most part I liked the vocals, except some of the last tracks where the vocal quality didn't quite match the first tracks. (4/5)

Tää oli hyvä levy. Bändiltä on tullut kuunneltua ne hittibiisit, mutta kokonaisuutena tää oli ihan mukavaa kuunneltavaa. Kuuntelin 30th Anniversary Editionin.

Dunno how I missed this band when I was discovering 1970s/80s British punk and new wave back in the 1980s. Right up my alley. What a fun debut!

I liked this. Good, simple pop punk. Teenage Kicks is a really cool song. Also, very awesome band name. Fun listen overall, wouldn't be mad if this came up on some playlists.

I had never heard of the Undertones before, but reading the Wikipedia article about this album helped me discover that I knew their lead singer, Feargal Sharkey, because of a solo hit he had in 1985. Also, this is a kick-ass punk album.

Haven't listened to this one in years! Teenage Kicks is the obvious highlight but Here Comes the Summer and Get Over You are almost as good. The song material is overall really strong! I set the bar for five stars a bit too high but this one comes pretty close.

??? early UK punk super! c

4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/the-undertones/the-undertones/ YESSSS MELODIESSSS!!! Quite similar to things like Buzzcocks and Ramones, but guess what, I like those too! This album has only bangers and doesn’t overstay it’s welcome.

I wasn't impressed at first, but then some of their big hits came on and I got more into it. The album goes by incredibly quick though. By the time you've started to get into it, it's all over.

Classic Northern Irish punk - still sounds good

I did not realize that pop punk has been around this long. Shows what I know. Very fun. Don't think I didn't notice being assigned an Irish band on St. Patrick's Day.

I like the Undertones. They don’t make great high art but they make fun catchy songs I love

Very British First two songs were pretty boring for me but the album grew on me overall! "Male Model" & "Teenage Kicks" are my favourite tracks. The vocals on "Jump Boys" sounded weirdly familiar to me and I couldn't quite place it... it sounds like fucking Present Mic from My Hero Academia lmfaoooo

Good one

I love punk rock and had heard Teenage Kicks before. Not sure why I never dug deeper. This is fun! Kind of an Irish Ramones. 4/5

Pop punk before blink. I like 4/5 x

Decent

Belfast punks, with the right balance of energy and sardonic humor.

This is another album that I'll add to my tower of ignorance. I had never heard of these guys before. The album is fun and eminently listenable. I had no idea Fergal Sharkey was in a band, and from what I can hear, a pretty good one as well.

gran disco!

First time listening them, I really liked it! I love the Clash, so anything resembling them gets my instant approvement. It's all in the genre — the energy, the simple chords, semi-melodic choruses, semi-talkative verses. Everything is rushed like we're running (police on our back if you know what i mean). It's also a great debut album. I like that it has pipe organ somewhere in it, as well as repetitive memorable melodies and lyrics, which makes it not totally punk, but more like a mix of classic rock/glam rock and punk. Some songs also sounded like surf rock to me. "True Confessions" was unexpected, but it's my highlight, added it right after the intro. Also I love when an album has 16 songs and lasts only 34 minutes.

3.5/5 Catchy melodies and a slightly noisy, thick sound. Feels a bit too slight.

Man these guys are fun. 1979 punk (or post-punk) from Derry, Northern Ireland. There's definitely some good 1950s influence here. Sounded more or less the same as their second album, so it also gets a 4.

Pleasantly surprised. Thought it was gonna be some more brit pop bullshit. Sounds like they were influenced by The Clash (or vice versa?) Some of it is almost pop punk, some is almost new wave. Good stuff.

Short, sweet, fun, with a splash of angst and rebellion. Just what you need in an early punk album. Great album.

This is just damn good. Punk with all the urgency and anger, but actually good music that is well played, well written and with a decent voice. Id not heard the full album, just the singles and enjoyed it immensely! In the same vein sonically as the early clash is the best compliment i can give it.

Simple but impeccable three chord pop executed with earnest youthful enthusiasm. The absolute essence of rock and roll.

Den perfekta punkpop skivan. Oemotståndligt charmigt. Den har kanske inte haft så stor betydelse för mitt liv, förutom så teenage kicks. Hursomhelst bland de bästa i sin genre

Some great songs on there

So this is what Pop Punk was like in 1979...Cool. Not sure I'll return to this but it was fun while it lasted.

VERY GOOD

Enjoyable album, nice late seventies sound

Punk! Kinda sounds like the stranglers but shitter Best-Emergency cases 4/5

Surprisingly good

so catchy and fun

Enjoyed this album. I was vaguely familiar years ago but really started listening more recently. Good debut and a unique singing voice.

Really liked this - kinda like the Sex Pistols but if you replaced 50% of the anger with anxiety.

Gostei muito desse álbum! É um álbum de Punk bem visceral. CVJ Neko.

I had never heard of them. This was a really well-done power pop album. Simple, fast, three-chord songs, background ooohs and aaahs. Little bits of synthesizers to pep it up here and there but for the most part just a straight ahead rocker. 16 songs in 34 minutes? Immaculate. If early, poppy punk (say, Buzzcocks, Ramones) is your thing, and it's definitely mine, this is pretty great.

I will base this review on the October 1979 reissue, which places "Teenage Kicks" and "Get Over You" in the middle of the record. I know I first heard The Undertones' debut single, "Teenage Kicks", about a year and a half ago. They are a punk band from Derry that drew influence from garage rock, glam rock, and new wave, though they would experiment with other styles in their later years. Much like their influences in The Ramones and Buzzcocks, they would later be considered a precursor to pop punk. That much is evident in their self-titled debut. The simple yet catchy guitar riffs, the tight rhythm section, the harmonious vocals around Feargal Sharkey's eccentric delivery, and lyrics that deal with more adolescent viewpoints of romance, suburbia, and rebellion would all become typical of the genre. There are a few deviations here, such as Damian O'Neill's keyboard play on tracks like "I Gotta Getta" and "True Confessions", but for the most part, this is pop punk in its simplest form. It's certainly played well by the band, as they did have a good knack for hooks this early on. But I'm not sure how much this would stand out against the artists that have come before and after. The "before" part is more notable because, in some regard, The Undertones wanted to make an album like The Ramones. They certainly succeeded, perhaps a little too well, because I'm left wondering how essential this record is compared to The Ramones' self-titled record or Rocket to Russia. Don't get me wrong, I still consider The Undertones' self-titled to be a good record, and it helped set the tone for an entire subgenre to come. But in hindsight of everything that's come out of pop punk, I'm not certain how well this album stacks up outside of historical significance.

I'd never heard of this band, but it's great.pop punk.

Excellent album, nothing too clever just simple punky rock and roll

Das freut die Alt-Punker

This album is short and sweet. High energy catchy tracks right off the bat. Some are a bit repetitive, but the energy stays up and it’s a fun listen throughout. Solid 4/5

Undertones of me liking this a lot.

Teenage Kicks is good of course. Rest of the album lives up to that pretty well too. Helps that it’s so short

Quite liked this, which is unexpected for the genre. Teenage Kicks is of course a banger. Simpsons: Yes

My second album from the Undertones. These guys write songs that are catchy as heck, but also (strangely) aren't that memorable. It's odd. Punk music is defined by being short, simple, and punchy, with riffs or melodic hooks that grab onto your brain and don't let go. And anti-establishment sentiment. That should be a surefire formula for a collection of great, memorable pieces. The ones on this album aren't super distinct from one another, though, and once each song is over, I can't for the life of me recall its respective hook or instrumentation (the latter doesn't vary at all). The most unique track is the 56-second closer Casbah Rock, which features a muted guitar-bass-drum combo and a bizarrely high-pitched vocal delivery that almost sounds like a different singer. But dang it, I'm having so much fun here, even if afterwards I struggle to remember why. This is better than their later record Hypnotised simply because there's more joy, energy, oomph to these tracks. Teenage Kicks is the lead single and it's perfectly obvious why: it's stupid, simple, and the guitar line shoots through you like muddy lightning. I'm also a fan of the album opener Family Entertainment. It appears to be about incest, but that's not why I like it. (Isn't this genre supposed to be political?) The chorus features a tritone chord change that absolutely grabs your attention like nothing else. Jimmy Jimmy, (She's A) Runaround, I Gotta Getta, and I Know A Girl are also catchy highlights. Probably. Like I said, they all blur together into one punky conglomerate. 4/5 Key tracks: Family Entertainment, Teenage Kicks, Jimmy Jimmy

Very good, if a bit repetitive. I would listen to it again, but will not be adding it to my Tidal library.

The Undertones is certainly a name considering the singer's voice. 4/5

Unsurprisingly for someone who likes punk, I liked this. It's the melodic Clashy-end of punk rather the purely shouty-end of punk, and I appreciate that enormously. However it does suffer from having some *extremely* well known tracks on it... plus everything else. It positively belts through 16 songs in 34 minutes though, and it it definitely something I actively enjoyed listening to, so much so, I heard it three times yesterday. I am predisposed to enjoy this type of thing, and I enjoyed this type of thing. 4/5

So fun. Forgot how much I enjoy this band. Such great hooks. Such an ear for melody. Such great poppy punky sounds. I just had a great time listening.

Angenehmer British Punk. Fands gut. 35 Minuten, knackige kurze Songs.

I liked this one more than the first

boa música. punk rock não é meu estilo favorito, mas dá pra dar uma curtida massa.

Just great hooky punk. And they're Irish!

Punk chill mais banger

A melodic Ramones? Interesting.

Nice Derry Girls reference 🤘

Why have I never heard of this band?!! Too Pop for Punk. Too Punk for Pop. Perfect little bite-sized nuggets of truly great music craftmanship. The Undertones is probably one of my favorite discoveries of this listening journey so far.

Amazing old school pop punk! I still prefer this over the more modern take on pop punk, it still has that raw punk feel but with catchy pop hooks that you can actually sing along with. A while back, this list gave me the follow up to this record and I wasn't exactly underwhelmed, I liked it, but it didn't exactly excite me all that much (I did save it to my library though). The Undertones' self-titled debut though, I enjoyed this far more!

Old, original punk

Seems like an early version of the more melodic punk music that was popular much later.

I have a huge amount of respect for Fergal Sharkey and his work in cleaning in forcing the government to make the water companies in England do their job properly and stop pumping shite into rivers. This was good. I’m not a fan of Teenage Kicks, but there were more songs on this album that I was familiar with than I thought I would be.

It's great. Teenage Kicks obviously stands out massively but the rest of the album isn't poor or anything. Solid and enjoyable throughout.

Pretty fun high energy early punk. Standout songs: Get Over You Here Comes the Summer Jimmy Jimmy (She's a) Runaround

A lot of pretty decent songs, a couple of very good ones, and one exceptional one (you know which one). I like its youthful exuberance.

I really like this. Very catchy - and Teenage Kicks is a banger!

Muy repetitivo pero con la marca de la banda, me supongo yo, recuerda a The Ramones o Sex Pistols, idk. Me agradó para practicar sus canciones en guitarra, tienen algo adictivo.

I think the closest comparison I would be able to give for The Undertones (this album at least) would be to say they are a less good Irish version of The Ramones. I like this record, but The Ramones they are not. Nor are they the Sex Pistols. But there's something about this simple kind of punk music from the 70s that just feels right. It's true to he sense of what rock music should be - kids that, for one reason or another, were inspired to pick up instruments and make some noise. I love it if only for that. The songs are simple, rough, and easy but that's ok. 3.75/5

I didn't think The Undertones was a super special album but it is one i still enjoyed quite a fair bit. This is your typical early new-wave punk rock album as it has all the things you would expect from an album like that. Everything from, the fast melodies, the vocals and the keyboards for that new-wave touch. I still think that this album got all those basics down as everything here sounds really fun and good. A lot of the songs are very samey which is why its only up to a 3.5 star rating but everything here still sounds very good. I also think i like this album more than Hypnotised because whatever odd thing i didn't like about that album, it doesn't seem to be here on this one. I thought that this was a really enjoyable album. Best Song: I Know A Girl Worst Song: Billy's Third

Solid punk album in the same vain as the Sex Pistols. More poppy than some punk albums, but still firmly counter culture. All about sex, rebellion, and being a teenager.

Seems like early punk rock! Pretty good.

Teenage kicks!

Finally getting a good album after a streak of bad albums is so refreshing

Really good Good singles Fast Upbeat Short Really good

Loads of energy and full of short songs. Great stuff

If ever there was an album about the teenage condition this were it. Pretty much every song is about how is ball are about to explode.

Perfect punk pop. I always thought that The Undertones struggled under the weight of that great single but this didn't outstay it's welcome, unlike their second album

Out of respect for John Peel, I cannot give The Undertones 3 stars, but it didn't really move me much past that marker.

Enjoyed this, I give it 4 stars... one for each of the power chords they played repeatedly!

TEENAGE KICKS RIGHT THROUGH THE NIGHT

Starts as a 4. Remains a 4.

I’m such a sucker for old punk

Fun, my favorite track was ‘Get Over You’.

Really fun album, right up my alley. Quick and energetic and easy to listen to.

Never heard of these guys, sound kind of punk. Right away I dig their energy. Varied tracks. 4* Highlights: family entertainment

This started as I was pouring my cereal and I immediately felt myself enter the intro of coming-of-age show lmao. also spotted a guy coming down the street with major strut during the male model song. Felt a tad @ed by She's a Runaround tho....

7.6/10 enjoyed this a lot! reminded me of the kinks/the buzzcocks, which makes sense bc this album is from that same era of british music. would listen again

Forgot how many bangers they have. Still very toothless for a Derry band nevermind 70s Troubles punk, which is impressive in its own right.

Yet another late 70s rock album that further proves that this era of music is just the type of stuff I'm looking for. This one was a little more punk than I'd like it to be and so doesn't hold up to the likes of Television and Talking Heads, but it was still super enjoyable from start to finish. And, like I've noticed in all rock entries from the late 70s, the influences of these groups on the alt rock of the aughts is undeniable and The Undertones are no exception. I'll be returning to many tracks from this self-titled album to be certain, if not repeated listenings of the whole thing start to finish.

This is a very fun punk album. Great energy. I'm giving an extra star for "Teenage Kicks" because the single is that damn good.

Forgot how much I loved this album. Good memories.

Fast furious fun, clever punk. Excellent.

Okay, that was fun and brief. Had some moments even when its fun punk pop package reminded me of listening to X-Ray Spex (#33). Alright!

F yeah! 🤘

Loved this - kinda early 80’s vibe

fun upbeat, get your day going energy

The Undertones really strikes a nostalgic chord. As a teenager, I was deep into electronic music and just starting to explore 80s new wave. I worked with a guy named Adam, 20 years older and a die hard 70s and 80s punk fan, who introduced me to this band. Its power pop vibe was the perfect bridge for me, and “Teenage Kicks” was the first track he played. Every time I hear this band, it’s a trip down memory lane.

The British version of the Ramones

Every track is fun! Favorite tracks: Family Entertainment, Teenage Kicks

this was pretty fun! a lot more listenable than some of the punk on this list in my humble onion. short and sweet which i appreciate.

decent early UK pop punk band, but not required listening imo. their sound and songwriting are pretty solid, but if i'm in the market for this type of music i think i'd rather listen to the ramones or something more interesting. someone in the reviews said something like the songs are good while you're listening to them but once the album's done, you remember none of it. 100% agree. 3.5/5, rounding up because punk is good actually? favorites: family entertainment, teenage kicks, here comes the summer, get over you, jimmy jimmy

Banger

Lots of songs on here I really enjoyed - a few I thought were too repetitive, but not enough to put me off the album. Fav song: Teenage Kicks - but if I try not to pick the one that’s most familiar, I also liked (She’s A) Runaround and Get Over You Least fav: Let’s Talk About Girls

Thought the whole album was decent if a little samey. Teenage kicks is a banger though . Specific rating - 3.8 Fav song- teenage kicks Least fav -family entertainment

Love me some pop-punk. Obviously have heard Teenage Kicks before (iconic) but there so many fun and good songs on this album! Favourite song: Girls Don't Like it Least: Jump Boys

There's something very Ramones about this. It's overall good fun and quite knockabout. Plenty of energy and tempo. It's slightly more melodic in the guitars, but nonetheless very direct and with plenty of hooks. Teenage Kicks is a perfect pop-rock song. There's something to be said for a song that's this simple, direct and earnest. It wears its heart on its sleeve, and distils a real feeling into 2 1/2 minutes. 3.5 rounded up.

This is great. It sounds very fresh. I would like to have another listen. I really enjoy this type of punk (buzzcocks et al.) but I'd not heard a full undertones album before, or if I had, not this one. Cos this one is brilliant. I wonder what I'd feel without the later added hits to it. But I still think it'd be great, teenage kicks actually feels like it slows things down a bunch, it is a relatively low tempo track. All in all very good and one I'll put on again.

Fun early pop-punk. I'll admit I've only listened to more contemporary punk acts but I enjoyed this; teenage-me would have probably enjoyed it too. Simple, upbeat songs with some catchy hooks that don't overstay their welcome. Unfortunately the short nature of punk songs didn't make them the most memorable after only one listen, but I will definitely revisit this album again sometime. 8.5/10 Favs: Listening In; Teenage Kicks; Wrong Way; Get Over You

Cool New Wave/punk vibes. Sounds like freshman year at college.

21/08/2025 Two of the songs I knew were on this album and i enjoyed it. Spotify listeners: 506.7k

Another Undertones, interesting. Solid punk, some great standout tracks, but its already 1979. Post punk is already thriving. It's got Teenage Kicks and here comes the summer! 3.5 rounded up Heard before? Some songs Owned: No, 7/1001, 7/25 (28%) Will I get? Already have Recommend: Yes

Punk anos 70, muito bom!!!

Basic and somewhat simplistic punk rock, but fun. A low 4, but I’ll listen to this again.

Until last week, I'd never heard more than a couple of their songs. I was at their concert, it was good. This album is fun too.

Awesome! Maybe a bit too simple to get to 5, but might be 4.5 for me right now.

A solid example of early punk rock done right. Sixteen songs in 35 minutes, all fast and loud with zero wasted time. “Teenage Kicks” is the obvious highlight, still buzzing with the same raw energy decades later, and “Get Over You” keeps that momentum going without missing a beat. The hooks are sharp, the attitude feels genuine, and the whole thing is over before you’re ready to stop listening. This is punk rock exactly how it should be.

Nice cock

American-sounding Irish punk. Strongly reminded of the Ramones. Some of the softer tracks sound like 50s rock and roll. Teenage Kicks particularly, it's real Buddy Holly stuff. Family Entertainment - I have heard this many times without realising. I really like the fact that most of these songs are just 2 minutes. The songs are as long as they need to be, no longer. Whole album is a lot of fun, except Mars Bar, parroting a corporate slogan, very un-punk. Get Over You my favourite track? Single version of True Confessions I also like a lot.

Very solid British pop-punk. I really enjoyed the whole album. Great riffs and hooks throughout.

Punks playing punk, and not reinventing the genre. But it's still good.

Very punk rock

Thoughts before listening: Oooh....I just recently listened to their sophomore album on this project, and while I thought it was okay, I was shocked that an Undertones album without "Teenage Kicks" would make the list. Good news I guess, cause here is that album. So I know this is early punk rock that leans more toward the power pop side of things. "Teenage Kicks" is an absolute banger, so I look forward to hearing that. Review: The roots of pop punk. "Teenage Kicks" is the true standout here, but the rest of the album stays in a similar lane of fast, catchy songs about girls and other obsessions of adolescence. This formula would be repeated by 1000s of bands, including many that spent countless hours in my cd player in my own teenage years. While the Undertones may have been beaten to the pop-punk punch by the Ramones and Buzzcocks potentially lessening their legacy, this is still a highly enjoyable listen. 4-stars

Not life changing, not instrumentally mind blowing, not a cavalcade of comedy or variety. And yet it still somehow wins me over. I’m always a sucker for a fast and short punk albums and 16 songs at just under 35 minutes is what I like to see. Yes this album is not reinventing the wheel, but not a single song will overstay its welcome. This is a no skip album, but not because the album is chock full of masterpieces. It’s just the perfect length for every song. I might not have saved every single song. But I was never tired of a song or needed a break from an annoying riff or beat. This album held my attention for the full time and I enjoyed it. What more could you say?

Was prepared to be a hater, but actually enjoyed this quite a bit. Very punk. Very fun. Really enjoyed “Get Over You”. You win this round, Robert.

7/8/25. Starting to really like the Undertones. This is the second album I really enjoyed, just straight up punk and unique voice.

jako dobar zarazan pank rok!

Classic. Still a good listen.

Love me some English punk!

83% Best: Family Entertainment; Teenage Kicks; Wrong Way; Jump Boys; Get Over You; I Know a Girl; Listening In Must-Hear? Sure

The Clash lite. Great songs

Cover 6 Good songs. Overall, a good album but not great. Many of the songs sound like typical rock-era songs. Highlights: (She's A) Runaround and I Know a Girl.

Catching up on yesterday's... I used to listen to a lot of punk and ska. This was great fun but I pretty much like anything with this style of drumming 🤣

really good, sounds very ahead of its time

Music doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. Each song is a wonderful stand alone vignette. Urgent and refreshing. I enjoyed all the tracks not just the well known couple.

In a parallel universe, all of these alternative rock bands from 1979 are the hottest thing. Now this Undertones album is a little more punk and beach rock than some of the other bands I'm thinking of, but it's still damn fun. This album was a little less memorable than Hypnotized album, but still good and jjst what I needed now that the summer weather is about here. Appropriately, my favorites are Here Comes the Summer and Teenage Kicks.

Great energy at times more melodic that other late punk bands. Feargal’s voice gives the band instant recognizability. They are almost as fun as they are disgruntled.

>The Beatles

Album 762 of 1089 The Undertones -The Undertones (1979) Rating : 4 / 5 My 2nd album from this band and I wasn't disappointed. Some awesome punk-pop focused on teenage life and emotions. 16 tracks packed into 36 minutes. Some adjectives that have been associated with this album that I can agree with: "raw energy", "simple yet effective songwriting", "distinctive vocals", "infectious, feel-good tunes", "relatable and timeless".

Good, rock

This band walked so pop punk as we know it could run, and it is a pretty brisk walk. These guys know their way around a hook.

I enjoyed this. Hadn't heard of them before - interesting that they're from North Ireland.

A pleasant surprise. Very listenable early pop punk. Kind of feels like they merged a lot together here from various 60s and 70s influences to create something that is now well-established.

This feels like very accessible punk. Straight to the point and pleasant to the ears.
