Absolutely great album by Massive Attack. Still their 3rd best after Blue Lines and Mezzanine. Hear Tracey Throne at her best in Protection and Better Things. The only weak track is Heat Miser. The Euro Zero Zero track from the Singles collection is a much better version of this album’s Euro Child, but Euro Child is still good though it sounds a tad dated. Euro Zero Zero is a better, darker update if you enjoy this album and Mezzanine.

Something about this grows on you. I didnt think I would like it at first and when I looked at my rating from last time I thought I was being generous but it actually is a 4 maybe even a 5. Fuck it - its a 5

Absolute banger. I think Mezzanine is their apex, but this is as strong a lead-in as you could ask for. A masterpiece through and through.

I love Massive Attack

I loved this album so much! It is so unique and unusual...

Perfect sound! Perfect group! Perfect album! Protection is a masterpiece. Better Things and Better Things are perfect. The others are great.

Classic. 5 stars

Sparse instrumentation somehow leads to claustrophobia, anxiety, and desperation. Truly stunning

Good vibes, chill listening. Great instrumentals and vocal work! I feel like a lot of music from video games took notes from this page. 'Heat Miser' was my fave.

Great album. Not as great as some of their other albums, but I can't give it less than a 4.5 and will leave it at 5 stars for this scale. The song "Protection" is just brilliant, classic, and a song I will never get tired of. The last few songs start to stumble a bit, particularly The Doors cover, but the rest of the album pulls everything up, to me.

Simply sublime. The opening track, the title track, sung by Tracey Thorn, is one of my favourite songs of all time, the most dreamily beautiful song, with a languid beat and gorgeous vocals. Karmacoma, Eurochild, Sly, Better Things - all superb, Massive Attack at their imperious best. We didn't deserve this album, but we're sure glad it's here. I cannot believe it's over 30 years old now.

This was excellent. Wonderful even. But also certainly not perfect, especially in comparison to Blue Lines and Mezzanine. But that’s a high bar so I can’t reallyyy expect an additional album from them of that high quality. It was still a great listen though with many standout tracks and great moments. The album as a whole was really cool too with a constantly changing vocalist and style. It didn’t feel super cohesive as a result but it sure did feel like Massive Attack so they at least did something right there. Edit: (4->5) still no Mezzanine or Blue Lines but that sure as hell does not stop this from getting the 5 it deserves. I’ve become a big sucker for trip hop and Massive Attack. Truly the goats.

⭐ My Rating: 4.7/5 Moody Shadows It’s darker than Blue Lines, but smoother. More refined. Like the part of the night where the party’s over but you’re still too haunted to sleep.

holy shit interactive buddy

Fantastic album. Protection and Karmacoma are very strong openers. I just love triphop and Massive Attack specifically so much.

So friggin awesome every song constructs its own unique energy and atmosphere of good vibes. Some playful some more dark, everything masterful and groovy as fuck

Massive Attack!!!! LET'S GO! I've only ever heard one of their albums from front to back. And that is of course Mezzanine. This one is with Tracey Thorn. Don't think I've heard her before. But it has a strong Faithless vibe and that to me is good. Weather Storm is perfectly titled. It's sexily jazzy. I love the deep bass. Damn Heat Miser is awesome! 5 stars!

MA's best album, great mood, so relaxing and captivating at the same time

pretty good, similar to cibo matto

My second favorite Massive attack album. 10/10

Solid 10

Massive Attack staat garant voor luisterplezier. Elk album is gevarieerd.

Can never be as important as blue lines, but still a very strong album

Pilar do trip hop. Muito original, reflete seu tempo sem soar datado. ótimo e sexy!

Atmospheric, well produced, just lush. But let's pretend that their cover of Light My Fire, ok?

Another laid back masterpiece, a refinement on their first record.

Massive Attack is one of my favorite bands. I got into trip hop partly because of them. I started with Mezzanine. It fitted in wonderfully with my sound at the time. I only came across Blue Lines - which I had already heard in this project - later through a friend and had to listen to it for a while. It was only later that I came across the album Protection. I really liked it, but it seemed to me to be the weakest of the three. The cover version of Light my Fire was unnecessary, but the rest of the album was still very good. This year Massive Attack are playing live in my area. I'm looking forward to going to the concert. 5/5

so good, brings back many vague memories of when it came out! Both Tricky and Tracey Thorn are incredible here, such a great set of tunes throughout. I think it's their best by far

If this is trip hop give me more. Somehow both atmospheric and danceable, what's not to love?

Solid album. I've only known about this group recently but I like what I've heard. I'll keep digging into their catalog. Thanks generator.

Classic!

Out of all the classic trip hop albums Massive Attack released during the nineties, this is probably the lesser of the three -- my minor grudge is mostly directed at the instrumentals featuring piano performer Craig Armstrong (who was somewhat trendy in Britain at the time, but has since faded into oblivion, at least as far as I know). Those cuts verge a little too much on elevator music for my taste, sapping some of the momentum found elsewhere in the album. The thing is, the floors you explore once you get out of those lifts are *all* fascinating. It's like roaming inside the cold and somewhat dilapidated corridors of a business building late at night, crossing the paths of all sorts of ghosts and spectres. One is Nicolette, lending her Billie Holiday-adjacent voice to the eerie "Three" and the lush neo-psychedelic, string-laden tones of "Sly". Another is an elderly Jamaican following your unsure steps as you cross empty rooms in the sound of "Spying Glass" -- doesn't he exactly look (and sound) like legendary reggaeman and dub prophet Horace Andy? And then at some point, you feel like you're gonna get mugged by a young ruffian with a burly mug named Tricky, with 3D and Daddy G looking at the scene with an approving look on their faces. "Eurochild" is hypnotic and trippy, but it's on the ominous and iconic "Karmacoma" that Tricky sounds the most menacing, in spite (or maybe because) of his hushed vocals... The most impressive ghost, however, is Everything But The Girl's Tracey Thorn. Her ethereal yet precise presence irradiates the minimalistic "Better Things". And most of all, it transcends the legendary opener "Protection", eight minutes of sheer beauty and incredible musicality -- slow yet hard-sounding hip hop beats, a simple funk guitar loop and an ominous, obsessive, one note-bassline all caressed by Tracey's motherly vocals and soothing layers of keyboards piling up on one another. That cinematic title-track is pure magic, and in that particular realm often explored by 3D, Daddy G and Mushroom, only "Teardrop" featuring Liz Fraser, from follow-up album *Mezzanine*, can be deemed superior. Oh, of course, you also have that controversial cover of The Doors' "Light My Fire", also with Horace Andy. I always thought it was only a tongue-in-cheek joke to close the proceedings. My only real issue with the last leg of the album is mostly that not much happens after "Sly" (the second instrumental featuring Craig Armstrong which follows it is more boring than that goofy version of "Light My Fire". The latter elicits some snarling emotional response on my part, at least. Given what I've just written, I could have easily gone to a 4/5 grade here. But the peaks on *Protection* are so damn high that I can forgive its two or three valleys. It's been such a nice ride in that haunted glass tower anyway. It's gonna be a 4.5/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums, then, rounded up to 5. Which translates to a 9.5/10 for more general purposes (5 + 4.5) Number of albums left to review: 3 (plus the 80-ish extra LPs listed on this app, included because different past versions of the book have mentioned albums that have since been dropped in subsequent editions) Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 430 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 255 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 315

Easy-peasy lemon-squeezy. One of my favourite albums by one of my favourite groups. 30 years old now and certainly NOT Electonica.... Great videos if you ever get chance to watch them. Not quite the best of Trip Hop but close (Mezannine and NearlyGod)

TIL that Weather Storm, a piano piece that I've known and loved since I was a child, was originally a Massive Attack track??? Anyway, shockingly, local trip-hop enjoyer enjoys foundational trip-hop album. Some bits of it felt like they'd been John Cartered into feeling a bit like they weren't doing much I hadn't heard, purely because it's so foundational, but still, it's really good, and 5 for the force with which finding that out punched me in the brain, if nothing else.

Before this, my experience of Massive Attack was Unfinished Sympathy. I now see what I’ve been missing out on. Loved all of this.

Massive Attack was one of the first groups to create trip-hop, a mixture of hip-hop rhythms, dub grooves, and looped samples. Their work met with universal critical success, and they influenced generations of musicians. Protection is the group's second album, and while successful, was not as critically successful as their debut, Blue Lines. Massive Attach is a mood - or a vibe. Their material is mesmerizing, engaging dance music. They have a range of guest vocalists on the tracks, giving the album an impressive range, while maintaining a consistent mood throughout. The album is excellent, but the last track, a live "Light My Fire" cover, did not help the cause.

What an interesting album! Never got boring from beginning to end, blended genres in a great way, and was great to listen to from front to (almost) back (the "Light My Fire" cover was a hair out of place). Loved this one.

This is excellent groove music; the vocalist has a beautiful, crystalline voice. I enjoyed it.

Let's fucking go!!!! I love massive attack!!! It really is a crime that mezzanine isn't on this list though. If you even slightly enjoyed this album I HIGLY HIGLY recommend Mezzanine. It is a lot darker and colder, and has more rock elements, and some of the best production of all time. Now back to this album. I love the title track it is such a comforting track, and probably one of my all time favorite massive attack songs. I feel like I should hate karmacoma, but it is just so hypnotizing and I love the chorus. Three has some fun parts and nice singing. But weather storm is just such a chill song. Spy glass has a great beat, I don't know the singers names, but I always enjoy this guy's songs. Speaking of good singers, any of their songs that feature a female vocalist is top tier. Euro child is such a groovy track, I'm usually not the biggest fan or their hip hop tracks, but this one just has such a good beat. The rest of the album is good except for their cover of light my fire, which is one of the only Massive Attack songs I would describe as bad.

I'd say I had a better time than I thought I would, but I think this is predicated on how much trip hop and adjacent music my dad played growing up when I was a kid and of course would find it immensely boring. 8 year old me marginally preferred this to my mum playing Norah Jones. That being said there's a lot to love here and the textures are gorgeous, although my endless problem with being unable to detach the sample from the song that samples it goes on (James Brown - The Payback in the first song particularly). But on a quiet day sitting in the last rays of the sun, or waking up on a rainy saturday morning, this album has its place and knows it well, and as such I don't think I can really fault it.

There have been a couple trip hop albums on this list (Massive Attack, Portishead), and that's a new genre I had never heard of, but I gotta say I like all of what I'm hearing.

This is not their magnum opus, but it’s still so goddamned good. 4.5 if I could, but I’ve no issues giving this all five stars.

Massive Attack shows up for round 2 and brings Tracy Thorn with them for this one. That's like playing with Game Genie, it just ain't fair how good this is

I can't give this a rating based on any science, historical, or cultural significance or any logical reasoning. Why? Because for whatever reason, I have a pure love for Massive Attack, the genre, the groove, the vibe... This is not their best album (in a way) but it still falls under that "Oh, you didn't really like this? Welp... That's too bad because to me it is awesome and needs no defending." Most of the time when listening to an album of the day there is a distinct change between "my" playlist and whatever it was I was listening to and I have two common reactions: "Oh, it is over already" or "thank goodness that is finally done." This album is among the few where I didn't even notice when it ended and my playlist began.

Iconic album.

Really great focus music.

I've been a big fan of this album for a long time and it's an instant 5 stars from me. Listening through was an extreme pleasue both times and I can't pick a favourite, they're all my favourite.

That's an instant 5 from me - loved this album for quite a while now. But if you'll indulge me for a second while I disparage Robert Dimery one more time - why. the. hell. is. "Mezzanine". missing. from. the. list??? I'm not saying that either "Blue Lines" or "Protection" should be dropped to make room for it - it should be on here _as well_ as them. The Beatles and the Stones have a half dozen entries each, including some of their earliest stuff where they're basically just covers bands! smdh. 😠 Anyway, this album is glorious - every track envelopes you like a dense cloud of smoke. Really carves out a mood. I can even get behind the "Light My Fire" cover. Fave tracks - "Protection" and "Eurochild" on this play through, but I love em all!

Perfection

Played this one over & over again when it came out, and I've kept returning to it over the years. The exquisite 7:51 opening title track with Tracey Thorn could be twice could be twice as long, and still not enough for me. A neat touch is how the first and last five tracks (or vinyl sides) mirror each other in terms of collaborators and thus musically. So good that I listened to it twice today.

Almost flawless tbf.

Alveg ótrúlega svöl plata, ein af mínum uppáhalds. Fyrstu tvö lögin algjörir bangerar og restin frábær. Ekki einn veikur hlekkur.

Wow! What a nice surprise. I really enjoyed this.

Beautiful. No Notes

I'm always down for trip hop and Massive Attack are pioneers. Given the choice though I'd rather listen to Mezzanine.

beautiful.

Klassiker!

I really enjoyed this. It would have been too low key for me when I was younger but it's just my speed now.

Very mellow like Annie Lennox almost

I don't know this album as well as Blue Lines, though I did buy it at the time. It's a really fantastic piece of work. For a moment in time trip hope was a sound that was new, vibrant and great to listen to. Often much more interesting than the rap genres it derives from, it is a sound of Britain, and indeed Bristol where I studied at the time it was all happening. So glad to have rediscovered this masterpiece. (OK we will forget the last track as if it had never happened)

Massive Attack are great!

I've already heard this a few times, but it's a classic contemplative record, the music feels very deep and gives off the perfect late night car drive vibe, like much of their material, this is a deeply introspective listen, definitely check this out, there's not much music out there like this now

Auch ohne Liz Fraser ist die Band unvergleichlich.

Awesome Album - gives me some retro vibes. Protection was one of my favorite songs when I was around 9 or 10 yo. Always turned the TV loud as hell when it came @VIVA or @MTV

Супер хайповы вроде трип-хоп. Понравился сильно, хоть и не сильно разнообразный, продолжаем слушать P.S. С каждым альбомом все более впадлу писать

Just a classic of the genre, with wicked beats, hooks, and evocative stream-of-consciousness lyrics. I listen to this album end-to-end regularly and will keep doing so in perpetuity.

9/10 Massive Attack has gotta be one of the coolest electronic bands I’ve heard they might not be as good as Aphex Twin or Air, but they’re still absolutely fantastic

Oh man, this was a really good album. I actually had really low hopes for it, expecting it to be some trappy experimental attempt at being "different", but nope. From the title track, I was hooked already. It's a smooth 7 minute trip carried by the strings and really opens up when the dub and piano comes in. Karmacoma is so different and yet it fits in as the next song really well somehow. Tricky has a really laidback but intricate flow, and with the beats laid behind him, it doesn't feel false or out-of-place. The 2 classically inspired pieces were my favorites. Heat Miser is just a really cool piece, while Weather Storm is more of a peaceful perfect rain song. Normally a beat like that would drive me nuts, but I always find myself humming it halfway through the song. The piano work is perfect, you can feel the song coming to a close before the beat starts to fade. This album is a great example of how minimalism can be better than more noise when everything works hard and in harmony with everything else. Most songs use very few instruments but they are brought together to create depth with the dubs and the keys and sometimes the strings. Every song was unique and diverse from the next and yet no song transition was jarring or unnatural. Despite being from many undefinable genres, this still sounds like one cohesive album. There was not a single song I didn't enjoy.

'Protection' was the album I put on on September 11th, when I needed to stop watching the news and find something comforting. Tracey Thorn's lyrics on the opening track felt like a warm blanket insulating me from the world. The whole album continues to feel like a safe space, escapist but with one eye still on reality. I know 'Blue Lines' is their celebrated album but I always found 'Protection' to be a huge leap forward for Massive Attack. It's not a perfect album but since I don't get review 'Mezzanine' (as it's not on the list), I can't not give 5 stars to at least one Massive Attack album.

Massive Attack always has a special place in my heart. Extremely cool, chill triphop.

Þetta er argasta snilld. Ómögulegt að sitja kyrr. Vorkenni ykkur að hafa misst af danstjáningunni minni í eldhúsinu í morgun.

Trip-Hop/Hip-Hop at its finest. This album is a smooth listen from start to end.

A lovely record through and through - maybe it’s easy to mock Trip Hop but I can’t deny I love the big records that came out of the genre - and this is definitely THE trip hop album. I grew up with Mezzanine and I always kind of dismissed this one but it’s gorgeous - moody, groovy, sexy and theatrical.

Loved the album, but the last track really sucks you out of the experience. Still, would listen to again.

Really enjoyed this one

I really like "Protection"! It has really, really good vibes. "Karmacoma" is also really neat, "Weather Storm" has immense vaporwave vibes, and "Three" is actually genuinely so good! I didn't know much about Massive Attack, but this is a great and really diverse album.

What an opening. The warm hug of Protection, followed by the cold chill of Karmacoma. It carries on strong too. Weather Storm is one of the best instrumentals ever, a kind of gorgeous dub piano jazz. The back half struggles to live up to this start, but is still very good, especially if you like dub or have had a toke. It's brilliant, ultimately.

Smooth

Wow, I friggin love this. I'm familiar with massive attack by way of mezzanine and blue lines, and it's been at least 5 years since those were in my rotation, and I don't remember liking them as much as I like this right now. Every song is a fucking jam and beautifully recorded.

Best of their albums? Maybe. Hard to beat Safe from Harm. But maybe. Tracy Thorn - great.

Samo prve dvi vride ocjene

The birth of lo-fi?

I just love this triphop stuff.

In my head this was always considered a "lesser" Massive Attack album at the time (possibly misremembering...), but it's an exceptional album really. The Tracey Thorn features are the best for me, but it's all good. 5*

Heat Miser is fantastic and Euro Child seems like it could have some inspiration for Gorillaz

Massive Attack. The music of my High School years.

Un clásico

Great album. To nit pic the final track a live cover of Light my Fire should of been left off.

Brings back fond memories of early version chill out music, this is such a good album. The only negative is the inclusion of the live version of Light My Fire, kinda spoils the end of an awesome album.

Absolutely stunning album.

Love this bandd

The ultimate triphop album? It is excellent throughout in every aspect, with nice samples, except for the Light My Fire cover at the end (ending with Heat Miser would have been perfect).

This was my gateway album into Massive Attack. At the time it was especially the two tracks featuring Tracey Thorn that I kept playing. Although it may not be my favourite from them anymore, this is still a great album.

This album is Massive Attack at their finest, it does not suffer from second album syndrome.

I LOVED this album from the moment it began all the way to the end.

Masterfully crafted beats, songs emote feeling that gives you a sense of relaxing contemplation, must listen

I loved every single music. Went to my favourites!

I don't know how to put it, but in simple terms: Massive Attack gets it. Even Protection, one of their lesser known albums (at least compared to other parts in discography) is full of that specific, slightly melancholic atmosphere. Every song takes you to a different place, like by pressing play, you are teleported to a land of chill and rhythm. The melodies and beats are always fascinating to get lost in it, and every track could have easily be 5 minutes longer with the main beat going over and over again. The selftitled, opening song is the greatest example. Its already almost 8 minutes long, but it's never boring, it just drills its attention deeper and deeper into your mind. It's just a great album and my only wish is that their other record will be on this list as well.

I loved it then. I love it now. That is all.

Delicia

Quality sounds from the Bristol boys, doesn't quite have the rawness of blue lines or the menace of mezzanine. Still songs like karmacoma and spy glass make it a triumph

Classic MA album, captures the moment and the feeling of the early/mid 90s perfectly for me.

Absolutely love this one.

so good, brings back many vague memories of when it came out! Both Tricky and Tracey Thorn are incredible here, such a great set of tunes throughout. I think it's their best by far

Yes, yes, yes. Fantastic album by Incredible band, not listened to this in a very long time and reminded how great it was

I really like Massive Attack. This album is not on Mezzanine's level but it's close.

6/10, 60%

Their best album, with the brillant Tricky still on board and with Travey Thorn. Maximquaye and Dummy in same year. Bliss.

Protection e Better Things tem belos vocais. Banda bem interessante.

Very good listen in car drive home

Songs I knew but didn't know were MA. So glad I was introduced to this.

This was a really nice one. I enjoyed it more than the other Massive Attack album we've had (which I rated 4 stars). Much more of the mellow goodness and less of the hip-hop or reggae elements I don't much (and better executed when it was present). A great listen.

I hesitated over giving this album 5 stars - but not for too long. If an album is perfection then it's worth ranking it to the highest level. Protection was such a defining record when it was first released. It still tells us a lot about the mid 90's, without losing the edge over the pst 25 years or so. Sometimes I think it's the production that makes this album stand out; then I think it's the songs. Or maybe the vocals of Tracey Thorn alone? It's probably all three. Right place, right time. Still banging.

Classic lo fi moody grooves with some stellar tracks and vocals (Tracey Thorn in particular) Still wonderful after almost 30 years.

funky, trippy, and above all cool. a very good consistent album with a great sound and vibe

Massive Protect

Massive attack is always very cool

perfect combination of samples and a great voice. drop the light my fire cover, but otherwise perfect

Heat Miser is fantastic. Loved every second of it. The album was overall good.

Never listened to these guys before. I always assumed they were kind of metal-adjacent because of their name. Turns out they're actually Thievery Corporation-adjacent. Also turns out that I'm a Massive Massive Attack Fan. Adding to all my groove playlists.

Fabulous chilled album that makes me wish I'd been old enough to go to Ibiza when it came out.

Great instrumentals

Didn't know this Massive Attack album yet. Good.

has a unique sound, if i had to put it in a playlist itd probably be with gorilaz songs. some songs kinda remind me of indian songs ive heard? all in all its a good album.

Loved it, not heard this album before but really like Massive Attack., so wasn’t surprised.

Amazing chill album

Man this was weird. It's like Sarah Mclachlan meets Theivery Corporation meets coffee house meets lofi. Massive Attack... more like Chill Attack. 3.97

Hey, I've never listened to Massive Attack before, what album should I start with? Everyone : Mezzanine. 1001 Albums : Protection. Everyone : Huh? That being said, it's still good. But not Mezzanine or Blue Lines good.

It sounded similar to Portishead and Everything but the girl which I discovered here and began to love on this site, but mostly the ones with Tracey Thorn (Protection and Better Things which were my favourites and go to the playlsit). But even the rest was fine, and the weirdest one I liked is Spying Glass, and even instrumental ones like Weather Strorm and Heat Miser were chill as ambince. Not really a 4 album, and I've seen they have even greater works, but I noticed this site is weird sometimes and favours earlier works, the others being subbmited by community, so let's say a 3.6-3.7 so I wil give a 4 because I discovered this genre and I'm getting rock fatigue

nice chill trip-hop sesh

I will forever be baffled as to why Mezzanine isn't on the list. Not that Protection and Blues Lines aren't good (they are really good), just that Mezzanine is transcendent. It's usually 2000's American rock acts Dimery has trouble with. Not 90s British acts. But either way, Protection is still pretty good. The title track with Everything But the Girl's Tracey Thorn is fantastic. And generally the rest of the track list leans more on a darker vibe than Blue Lines (Protection is closer to the Mezzanine sound), which I prefer. I will say, the Massive Attack Karmacoma version is not as good as the Tricky version. But yeah. Good album, just pales in comparison to Mezzanine.

It looks like basically I like trip hop. Some songs are boring but the mood of the others is/are very welcomed. I can hear Faithless in some parts.

Really enjoyed this … excellent chill / reggae vibes throughout 4

A lot of cool chill sounds here. Would def listen again. Nothing really amazing but a good listen.

I can totally see the allure of this album, but twas not for me.

Probably the weakest of the 3 90s Massive albums, but still really solid. The title track is absolutely gorgeous

Ayeee!! Massive attack! I must say, out of all the things that could’ve come out of this listen, I did NOT expect for the first song to blow me away the way it did. It’s one of the best songs I’ve ever heard, of that I’m confident. I adore it. The rest of the album? A real vibe. “Three” sounds like it Erykah sang over a trip hop beat, which would be way doper if it were actually Erykah. I actually do kinda hate trip hop, it always feels like a cop-out genre to me, that being said, I usually like it when it’s good. Still, the beats can tend to get a bit stale. Which is sad. 7.7/10

I wasted the nineties not giving Massive Attack the attention they deserve. This was great

“Mezzanine” blew my mind. Every track was amazing. “Protection” isn’t quite up there. The first couple are bangers and then it drifts along nicely enough. But it’s good!

Classic trip hop.

Great album 4/5

This is the second Massive Attack album I’ve had now, and once again I think it’s really good. Musically it’s very cool. I like how chill parts of it are. I like how dramatic and richly layered other aspects are. The production really is top-notch. For whatever reason, this was never an album I’d ever delved into beyond the first half and some of the bigger tracks, so I’m glad I have now. Some of the absolute best tracks are towards the end (like Heat Miser) so I was seriously missing out! As a side note, I still can’t believe Mezzanine isn’t on this list! This is a strong runner-up, but it doesn’t have the dark majesty of that album.

Trip hop at its best. Fun, chill, cool record. Holds up real well.

Beautiful trippy vibe as usual from this lot. Standout for me is the epic ‘Protection’.

Very special yeah yeah yeah!!!

Haunting brilliance. Music to get stoned to, take a long drive (not at the same time of course), lie on a beach. Heat Miser could be 15 mins long instead of 3. MA seem to have a stand out on each album (Unfinished Sympathy, Protection, Teardrop, Paradise Circus) but the collective is also awesome.

Pretty sweet

Besides Karmacoma, never listened to this one much. So close to classic. 4.5/5

I loved all the featured artists. The songs were great to listen to while I worked. I enjoyed Protection, Karmacoma, Sly, and Light My Fire.

What makes it great is restraint. A lot of trip-hop-adjacent records from the era confuse slowness with depth. This one does not. The grooves are measured, the arrangements are spacious, and the album understands that tension does not always need to arrive as menace. Sometimes it arrives as distance, coolness, and emotional ambiguity. That is where Protection lives.

Excellent album and my favorite style of electronic music. I’ve been a fan of Massive Attack for a long time.

I've loved every Massive Attack album I've ever heard, and this one is no exception.

Riktigt bra album, lyssna vidare

I’m appreciating and enjoying them more with each listen. Is each song distinct? Probably not. But it Aura-mogs me

Favourite: Better things Very good album

Love the album but I feel like they were still finding their feet on some of these tracks

Very chill vibes. The kind of music you put on when you're trying to put the moves on your girl. You think you're being subtle about your intentions, but she already knew. The music isn't required. You could put on the Vengaboys or even Chumbawumba and still get some action. A fine record indeed.

Decent album. I dig this trip-hoppy style. Nothing objectionable here.

I remember when I first heard this album. It was after I heard Tricky’s Maxinquaye. I had really enjoyed that album and thought it was a masterpiece. I was heavy into finding trip hop those adjacent to the genre. Blue Lines is an interesting album because I feel it explores several different types of genres. Dub and trip hop being the main ones. It’s an excellent album that I feel as a collective of artists defined what would become of the genre. Some highlights were Tracey Thorne guesting on Protection and Better Things. I think it showed where her voice could go. And was interesting that Everything But the Girl would eventually release a couple of electronic based albums after the success of the remix of Missing. But this having a woman singing over dark dusty beats would become that standard. Tricky had Martina Topley-Bird and Portishead would eventually release an album. Interesting being the first.

Weather Storm

Excellent album, didn’t like it quite as much as Blur Lines but still a very solid 8/8.5.

Superb

Confession time. Prior to this selection my familiarity with Massive Attack was mostly from Mezzanine, which I discovered and initially used a test record for new hi-fi equipment. I found that I enjoyed the record, but for whatever reason I never explored their discography further. As I was expecting, there is some great production on this record. This is lovely atmospheric music. These are sounds that make you want to settle in like one does under a good down comforter on a cold winter night. This is a great record, but I find its selection by the book editors to be an odd choice. They already selected their first album, Blue Lines, presumably because it was groundbreaking material. I appreciate that. However, in the entry for Protection, the author seems to admit that Mezzanine was a better record, “hence their staggering follow-up, Mezzanine”. So why not select the "staggering" work of the band that followed? This is the second trip hop album I’ve received from this project in the last couple of weeks and I’ve discovered that this may be my favorite hip-hop flavor.

Reminded me of a mix of Khrungbin meets reggae-dub and electronica.

Takie na 4

I first listened to Blue Lines a few years ago and Mezzanine shortly after, and discovered largely through those albums that I had a taste for “trip hop” or whatever the hell. Both of those albums are incredibly good. This was my first time listening to Protection, and it’s another solid project. I should give it more listens, but my takeaway is that it’s very good and at worst it’s just not quite as iconic as their two masterpieces.

Love this album. At times it feels just slightly thin for a 5, and the closing cover of Light My Fire is genuinely terrible, but man there are some gorgeous moments throughout.

I really enjoyed Massive Attack’s debut album Blue Lines and their 1998 release Mezzanine, but for some reason this one passed me by at the time. Part of the reason for that may have been the departure of Shara Nelson who was responsible for the vocals on their biggest hit Unfinished Sympathy. However, they invited Tracy Thorn of Everything But The Girl to deputize on two tracks and Tricky on two more, and they are both excellent. Musically, this is a great example of Bristol Trip Hop with deep, vibrant bass lines almost heading into dubstep territory in a couple of places (and there is a dub remix of this album too, that I’ve just spotted). The only slight misstep is the inclusion of a live cover of Light My Fire which doesn’t really work in context. There’s nothing wrong with it per se, but I’d rather have a full live album than a tacked on bonus track.

Of all the various sub genres of music that have risen and fallen in the time I've been paying attention, trip hop seemed to me as the most daringly creative. Instead of just a tweak on an existing formula, trip hop seemed to be something actually new. Listening now with the benefit of a few decades I can recognise that the genre does have forebears, namely dub, jazz, and (duh) instrumental hip hop. Still, it's admirable and remarkable how unique and distinctive the blend is, especially as it is shot through with it's signature atmospherics. This album is definitely atmospheric, with some gorgeous moments and dark twists. It varies widely, and for me that keeps it from being something I return to often, but I appreciate and enjoy it's various moments and contours. Perfect for a dimly lit room full of dank weed smoke, or a dinner party with sophisticates.

A great album to wake up on your commute to. Weather Storm is a perfect “staring out the window of a train song”

Heck yeah!! Starting in 2011, I made a mix CD every month (ending in ~2016, due to the horrors), and those CDs featured a very high percentage of Massive Attack mashups (and a few straight tracks). I think I could fill a whole disc just of 'Teardrop' mashups (the best being: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00jdLt9FSfs ). I say this now because knowing this list, Mezzanine won't even be on here. Anyway, I don't have this album, because it's older, but MA seem pretty harmonically consistent. The biggest change is the vocalists, but all of them are at least Good (if not Elizabeth Fraser level), so I like what I'm hearing. This is gonna seem dumb, but I had no idea Tricky was British. Nicolette kinda sounds like Yoko Kanno. Highlights: "I drink on a daily basis / Though it seldom cools my temper / It never cools my temper", 'Weather Storm' Lowlight: 'Light My Fire' (why is this happening, I ask myself)

i guess I am fully rediscovering electro genre

Showing my ignorance but assume this might be where trip-hop and similar genres probably started. At the time I had my head stuck firmly in guitars (of many forms) so more or less ignored it, more fool me. Listening to this now, I can see the chilled appeal, though some of it is pretty disturbing - but I love it.

Very unique sound really liked it

I'm not a fan of Karmacoma and Euro Child. That's a boring verion of Light My Fire. The rest of the album is nice though. My favourite was Weather Storm. This was the best massive Attack album I've heard so far.

variation is unique and flowy, into that

Wow wie lange ist das erste Lied. Irgendwie sehr beruhigend so gleichmäßige Musik. Gefällt mir. Ein ganzes Lied ist einfach nur Atemgeräusche. Wow wild.

Enjoyable listen. I like Mezzanine better but this one also has some good moments, particularly the opening track

For a band called "massive attack" they're actually quite calming. I like this type of sound, nice and complex.

I didn't love "Protection" as much as Massive Attack's first and third albums. "Karmakoma" seemed underwhelming to me. The title track of "Protection" didn't disappoint and is easily one of Massive Attack's top 15 songs. "Protection"'s best tracks have to be "Weather Storm" and "Spying Glass". The latter has vocals by Horace Andy, who sings many of my Massive Attack songs. 4 stars for "Protection".

I gave Blue Lines a 5/5, so I was interested to see how Protection by Massive Attack would compare for today’s listen. I really like this record. In fact, it’s made me realise I might just be a Massive Attack fan. It’s an easy, smooth listen that still feels fresh today, which says a lot for a mid-90s album. The production is excellent throughout, with a more refined and polished sound compared to Blue Lines. It leans further into that laid-back, atmospheric vibe, but still keeps enough groove to hold your attention. The vocals are a real highlight. Everything feels effortless and cool, and the different guest singers add nice variety across the album. It works just as well in the background as it does when you sit and properly listen, which is always a good sign. Favourite tracks: Sly is a brilliant track. I also really enjoyed Protection and Spying Glass. Least favourite tracks: The cover of light my fire was awful and really not needed. Album artwork: Cool, understated cover that fits the mood of the album perfectly. Album artwork: Cool album cover

Amazing album, and not too long for the tracks it has. The chill sounds and heavenly vocals makes it an incredible experience. Standouts like Protection and Karmacoma sets it up for its trip hop vibes that surround the album. Love it!

Love this. best moments were the instrumentals for me. Some of the guest vocalists fell a little flat for me but the music behind vocals on those songs remained fantastic

I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll bump down to a 4. 748 days since we got “Blue Lines”, and I’d say it was worth the wait. Obviously, I’ve heard a lot more trip-hop since then, so I’m more attuned to the genre, and this is some GOOD downbeat trip-hop. Right out of the gate, Tracey Thorn sets the tone with a great track in “Protection”, and almost immediately after, this album starts the shaky slope to slowly pull itself to a 4. It’s not that “Karmacoma” is bad at all; I actually like it, but it’s too long. “Three” is actively just kinda mediocre, as the progression stalls early. It’s not bad though. Honestly, this album’s shaky slope doesn’t necessarily come from any bad tracks (although we’ll get to that “Light My Fire” cover), but just mild production choices that stack up over the course of the album. “Weather Storm” is a fantastic groovy noir track; no complaints about that one. “Spying Glass” is once again too long; either that, or it just needs a vocal reprise to help fill out the back half better. “Better Things” is lovely, and Tracey Thorn continues to make me wonder if Everything but the Girl has better albums that aren’t on this list. “Eurochild” is solid, & I like the beat, but Tricky’s lyricism lacks a cohesion to really glue the track together. He never goes “Maxinquaye” mode here, thankfully. Both “Sly” & “Heat Miser” are great, but the instrumental-ness of it all just kinda suspends the album into a specific mood, one that’s not paid off at all by the “Light My Fire” cover. It’s the biggest stain on the album, and much like how Tricky kinda butchered “Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos”, they just don’t do the original song justice at all. It’s a bad closer to what’s otherwise a really strong album. The “Light My Fire” cover is kind of the nail in the coffin – I’d be willing to look past the little pile of production stuff on account of some very high highs here & what’s generally a really nice groove, but choosing to end on that just doesn’t feel satisfying at all. It is what’s bumping the album down to a 4, but regardless of that, I do think it’s a really strong set of tracks. I can come back to almost all of these (maybe not “Three”) & still vibe out, and maybe on another day, the really high highs here will still manage to override the little issues that built up for me. For now though, it’s a 4.5 that I’ll bump down to a 4, but a good album regardless, & one that should be heard before one dies. I enjoyed it.

g kiffe

Solid.

First half was a bit too slow and minimalistic for me, but I enjoyed from Spying Glass onwards

Love massive attack! This was a good album! Love the vibe!

I think from the beginning you kinda get sucked into this hypnotic and sensual atmosphere. The albums limited rotation of vocalists lend itself to be like a cascade of dreams and hallucinations, like some talking heads coming to speak your or other peoples thoughts into your head. And I mean all of that in a good way, there's a sort of subtleness the lyrics come across that do not overshadow or over control the beat. Protection, Weather Storm, Better Things, Eurochild, Sly are my favorite tracks. I think tracks like Three, Spying Glass, and Heat Miser are alright and have some moments I enjoy but overall I find those the most skippable. This album was very enjoyable, and I feel like this is a great intro for me personally into british hip hop / trip pop.

Love the production

Massive Attack were simply one of the best groups to ever do it, when it comes to trip hop. This is an album of theirs I'd not heard before, being familiar only with Blue Lines and Mezzanine, and it sits at a great halfway point between the two. There's just no matching the cool, moody, urban sound these guys cook up! That said, one thousand plagues on Robert Dimery's house for leaving Mezzanine out of the book. What the actual fuck???

Excellent stuff! Especially enjoyed the songs with Tracey Thorn. Sly was also a standout.

First time listening to these guys. Loved it! If I had to describe today's listen in one word, it'd be "alluring". It's the sick band name. It's the whole atmosphere they set with their trippy, hypnotic rhythms. It's their cryptic cover arts, and the way this one references what I recognize as their debut album's. It all forms an aesthetic that I find heavily enticing, and what I heard today definitely makes me curious to dive deeper into their discog -- especially when the general consensus seems to be that Protection snubbed their actual best album's place in the 1001 list. Standouts: Protection • Three • Weather Storm • Euro Child

So good. I will join in the chorus of voices clamoring to know why Mezzanine isn't on here, but Massive Attack never had a bad album and this was a pleasant surprise for me. Could see this becoming a 5 but that cover of Light My Fire kind of sucks.

Sumptuous and bass-heavy music that entertained from start to finish. Even the presence of Tracy Thorn wasn't enough to spoil this experience, although she almost ruined two tracks with her annoying voice. Interesting variety of styles, seamlessly joined together, apart from the last track, which was obviously live, but a bit of a jarring change of vibe. Glad they put the live track on the end. Four stars.

This was really cool, such an interesting mix of vibes and feeling almost split down the middle with the old school reggaeton and some times slow trip hop, sometimes both! Rather enjoyed this

The more I listen to trip hop on the list the more I enjoy it - this has so many great features on it with great vibes too it’s not as good as their other album on the list but it works mmm

Ba chiar mi-o plăcut extrem de mult e super calm și are vine albumul

man this was way more subdued than I'm used to with this genre and Massive Attack in general. I think that played a huge part in making it listenable to me. Everything is clear and produced well here, its almost odd to call this electronica. What a pleasant surprise, the featured artists add a lot to their tracks as well.

me sabe a humooo me sabe a humooo

Really good album, but sandwiched in between Blue Lines and Mezzanine (which should be on this list instead) it's very obvious that in comparison this has far weaker songs and often drags on a bit.

Ok album, nije dosadno, ima zanimljivih instumentalnih elemenata i originalnih vokala. 7/10 Najbolja pisma: Karmacoma

I love Massive Attack. I somehow always forget about them until they are playing again and then I am vibingggg.

Absolute classic of the mid 90’s

This is a good album but it should've been "Mezzanine" instead of this. Favorite track: Protection 3.5/5

Tracey Thorn & Nicolette, magician electrician. Mezzanine or 100th Window not on this list?

"I stand in front of you, take the force of the blow, protectiooon..." Karmacoma também é muuuuito divertida, aff. Que vibe de música. A minha terceira preferida é Better Things, tbm com a Tracey Thorn. A letra é ótima e essa parte foi uma pedrada kkkkk: "You say that the magic's gone, well, I'm not a magician You say the spark's gone, well get an electrician" Adorei, é um disco bem diversificado mesmo.

Lieblingstextzeilen: Soon I'll have the courage To leave my thoughts behind I'll give back all the knowledge And keep the wisdom precious in my mind Und If you believe I'll deceive then common sense says, "Shall you receive." Good somhs

This was a go-to office ambient-esque CD for me back in the day!

Very enjoyable trip hop album although sometimes I thought I was listening to EBTG!

Schon sehr gut, dazwischen längen

not their best but still very nice

I enjoy this well enough but it doesn't blow my socks off. Mid 3?

Tracey Thorn is awesome to see on here since this is around the time EBTG were pushing into electronic stuff. what separates Massive Attack from a lot of the dull trip hop i like to rag on is their dedication to dub influences and ability to make a complex and developed groove around it. it reminds me less of muzak and more of the hauntological post-rave Burial would become famous for. deserves to be one of the 1001? it's like the third most significant Massive Attack album. maybe. the real question is why Mezzanine was left off in favor of this. that's a decision that's just confusing. easy fix: swap this for Mezzanine

sal, veel bangers

This continues to be an album I can listen to over and over.

Call it electronica, call it trip hop - whatever it is, I'm into it. Incredibly laid back without getting boring, quite the opposite, most of these tracks are just mesmerising. That bass is divine and there's more going on in a lot of these songs than it seems at first. Gotta check out more Massive Attack

Everyone bad mouths light my fire. And they’re right to. It ends the album on a bad note for me. But the rest was great back in 94. And it’s still excellent today. It suffers only by not being mezzanine.

201/1001 Massive Attack - Protection Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ✅ I think this is my call to do a deeper dive into Massive Attack, as I've really enjoyed Mezzanine and Blue Lines in the past, but not gone deeper. I love the moody feel to this album and the diffent styles adopted into their sound. It teeters on the edge of being threatening.

Mmmmmmm

8/10 18.01.2026

i like it!

mellow with significant oopmh

This was quite enjoyable. Really easy listening.

I really enjoyed listening to this

Nydelige greier, undervurdert.

I was not expecting to like this as I don’t love electronic music but this was such a unique blend of different types of music!!

Have always been a big fan of the opening track, “Protection”, a fave trip-hop song with Everything But the Girl’s Tracey Thorn on vocals. The rest of this was pretty good as well.

A couple of stellar tracks on here, but it can't stand up to masterpiece that is Blue Lines and the cover of "Light My Fire" that ends the album just screams "Oh shit! We're 100% out of ideas!"

Szczególnie piosenki z damskim wokalem mają w sobie coś pięknego i efemerycznego. Dziwna muzyka, jakby z innej czasoprzestrzeni. 8/10.

Pretty good

Slinky and cinematic, sprawling out like a city at night

Cool album, didn't know any of the songs prior

Not my favorite of their albums, but first three song run is pretty flawless.

Simply wonderful album, earliest trip hop, last track a bit of a duffer.

I really enjoyed this, wasn't mad on track 2 or Light My Fire, but mostly, really loved the vibe, beats and melody. Very cool.

I liked the album, but really hated the live cover at the end. It made me cringe. Also, I agree with a lot of people on here that it's weird that Mezzanine didn't make it. For all it's flaws, this list never really struck me as all that hipster. If an album is popular, it's going to be on here, along with probably 2 or 3 more albums from that artist's catalogue. I'm only 100 albums in so far, but this is the first instance I've noticed of them omitting a popular album in favor of a more obscure one. Weird.

I thought this was a really cool album. Every song had a totally different feel to it

Seeing electronic group in the description was off putting.. Its not the kind of music I'm into so I wasn't expecting much from this but I was pleasantly surprised. Very chilled album with a good variety of singers

Love massive attack, never listened to this album but it was really great. The start of something that went on to be amazing.

I think if all the British hip hop, electronic, and punk music I didn’t know that this project introduced me to, Massive Attack is cream of the crop.

Chill background with nice Beats

To my suprise I actually enjoyed this album. Idk why I find it surprising but anyway. Some of the songs I found quite slow but they were relaxing and would be good studdy music. My favourite tracks were sly, euro child and heat miser. I loved the electronic sound and I think reggae beat, over all it was a solid album.

Blue Lines is known because it was groundbreaking. Mezzanine is known for being Massive Attack's masterpiece. Those were the only two Massive Attack albums I had heard. I just never paid attention to the other Massive Attack records because I'd rather just listen to Mezzanine. It's hard to force myself to go back to what I understood to be a step on the road to perfection. After listening several times, I can easily say that Protection is not as good as Mezzanine. But man, it's still really good, and in some ways fills a gap between the easy coffee shop vibes of Blue Lines and the dark, challenging sound of Mezzanine. Several of the tracks on Mezzanine, like Angel, have become classic hi-fi tuning tracks because the deep bass has to be tuned properly or the rest of the mix becomes obviously muddy. My system is tuned to handle the deep bass on Mezzanine, but I suspect that Protection would be much clearer by default anyway. The low tones are more inviting, but still demand attention. Protection is easier to listen to Mezzanine, but it isn't easily ignored like background music. Any of the tracks with Tracey Thorn are my favorites. Tricky likes to repeat his lyrics on multiple tracks from different albums (both Massive Attack and solo), so it's hard for me to evaluate what I think about this version of Karmacoma. The live cover version of Light my Fire is kind of fun, but ultimately an unnecessary distraction after the album's proper end, especially for those, like me, who aren't familiar enough with the album to end it after Heat Miser. I can see why I overlooked Protection in the past. I simply didn't realize that this step toward genius could be so important itself. Four stars.

Really like Protection. The title track is lovely and groovy and cool. Some parts of the album are a bit too tasteful to give 5 stars but I love it's relaxed atmosphere.

I have had some experience with Mezzanine from Massive Attack, and I don't recall liking it much, so I wasn't much looking forward to this today. Fortunately, either it was different or I am. This was quite enjoyable, and I'll be adding this to my personal collection. However, I will be making sure the Light My Fire cover is deleted. That was wildly unnecessary, extraordinarily bad by itself, and threatened to tank this album's rating for me. Fucking terrible, that was ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Front loaded album with some really cool songs, especially the title track. Sounds great on headphones. Could have done without the live track at the end. Great album, but not a patch on Mezzanine.

love love love triphop. weaker than their debut but still very good

Music to relax and chill out to. My favourite tracks were "Spying Glass" and "Heat Miser". I liked it.

Vibes: 5/5 Instruments: 4/5 Production: 4/5 Emotional Value: 3/5 Storytelling: 4/5 Album Cover: +0.5 Stand Outs: Protection, Storm Warnings Overall Rating: 4.1

This was good album in overall. I liked.

Very solid....no Mezzamine but a great listen regardless. 3.5/5

Excellent album. Downbeat (in the best possible sense) and chilled, this may be my favourite Sunday Morning relaxing CD. Loses a point for the underwhelming Light My Fire cover.

Classy

Not the right massive attack album. But still a good one

Rightly overshadowed by Mezzanine which is incredible (and bizarrely missing from this list). Might be a step down but Protection is a great album in its own right…. Except for the weird live Light My Fire cover at the end which I hated.

A pleasure to listen to. My soul thanks you.

Brilliant album. My parents put me on it when i was a kid so nostalgic

Music for bowling. But "Better things" and "Heat Miser" are 5star songs! The rest are 2stars songs

Elsker massive attack. Det her er lidt den perfected version af deres første album.

Pretty chill album.

Exactly what I expected, though I did enjoy it more than I thought I would. Not particularly a fan of this Bristol chilled electronic sound but it clicked with me today for some reason. I think massive attack are the best at this genre, it does seem to be put together with care and attention. Sly in particular was great but it was all listenable. It's all a bit samey and I'm never going to be excited about this sort of music but I have to admit I liked it. 3.5.

I like it

Nice soothing beats intermingled with occasional vocals.

The generator has earned these guys a new fan

Not as great as mezzanine, and I prefer blue lines over this also. Still some bangers tho

This is a great album, HOWEVER....... Saving possibly the worst EVER cover of The Doors 'Light My Fire' to the very last track somehow leaves the listener with an awful taste in their ears. What a dreadful track in an otherwise excellent album.

The first track on this album is awesome, and I also love the second, the next seven tracks are pretty good chill/background, the last track is abysmal - wtf, how is it possible to make a cover of an already terrible song SO much worse. Mostly good, so I’m giving it 4

First off, never has there been such a mismatch between band name and musical sound. I was expecting metal and the first song was smooth mellow bliss. The tracks featuring Nicolette are also high points. I really loved the first four tracks on this and was thrilled to think I had found a five star album. Sadly the quality didn’t stay as high all the way through. The real turn off was the track Heat Miser. The heavy breathing sound effect on that was viscerally displeasing and I was counting the seconds for my misery to end. The live Light My Fire track was a throwaway aberration from the rest. I’m so sad that the whole did not live up to its early potential.

I like it, not the sucker punch of the first 4 tracks of Mezzanine, but more consistent as a whole.

Mellow and trippy. 4/5

Lovely, mellow thing.

Great guest spots!

Très sympa, des vibe de gorillaz mais en moins électronique c'est très agréable. Je me vois bien écouter l'album et chill, par contre pas de perspective d'écoute en mode "rawdog". La dernière musique un peu hors-sujet mais ça allait quand même.

Chill and enjoyable.

Cool music

Cool listen again

Penúltimo martes de septiembre con Massive Attack, banda hermosa de un género hermoso, colgado y sexi como es el trip hop. Banda y disco hipnóticos, mantienen la mente entre la sensualidad y la abstracción. Gracias y hasta mañana.

Pretty great stuff! It’s quite hard to pull off this “lounge music” the right way; Massive Attack has proven that it is possible.

I went in with no expectations. I've heard of Massive Attack before, but really didn't know anything about them. It's good stuff. Trip-hop may be my new favorite genre. 4*, but that could easily increase with repeated listening.

Al fin otro disco hermoso ooooff. No se cual es el tema destacado pero seguro lo repetiré Nota: 4.0

Not my fave by them but still real good

p742. 1994. 4 stars. Excellent chillout album. All that's missing is a sense of excitement.
