Reviews (page 3 of 8)

I don't say it's not good, it is, but a little slow and weak

Massive attack are just quality

A good trip-hop classic album. Dreamy and laid-back, perfect groove when you feel that way.

An alright album, I liked Karmacoma, Spying Glass and Heat Miser the most.

Enjoyed. Better than I excepted

I LOVE MASSIVE ATACK. huuuuge fan of the songs on this album anyway but i’ve never listened to it from start to finish and let me tell you i will be doing later in life 😛, protection the song to start the album is a near perfect song to start with idk why, sets the tone for the rest of the whole album, love their sound so much their so original, never heard anything else like karmacoma, to sum it up the whole album makes me feel like that one meme of spongebob floating, very good ganja experience 😛fav song- three

Pleasant, groovy, didn't totally hold my attention.

Very dark and groovy, I liked it

It was good, but not as good as some of their other work.

Relaxing music; that was a surprise!

Essential nighttime album - chill beats and immaculate vibes. Tracey Thorn MVP of this album.

Such an excellent, chill vibe. I really dig this group. One of the best discoveries so far in doing this project!

An electronic album with clear hip hop influences. This has a nice vibe to it that I liked, and it has notable stylistic variation between the tracks, which is a plus. Some tracks drag on too long, though. The Light My Fire cover is dog shite.

Immaculately spacious and groovy

Vildt fed! Tunge tunge grooves

Great sounding! Love the vibes and really sets the stage for their coming albums

This was a cool album. Kind of a mix between 90’s alt rock, 80’s new wave, and deep house chill vibe.

'I stand in front of you / I'll take the force of the blow, protection.' So sings Tracey Thorn (Everything but the Girl) on the first track, and she seems to mean it. In fact, 'protective' is how to describe this album in general, since it's mostly on the defensive and erects a veneer difficult to penetrate: you are invited to flow along, but at a distance is the only level of intimacy it offers. That has its upsides, especially for those of us who want others to 'take the force of the blow,' at least some of the time. But as a sustainable source of felicity or welfare, it's not the gestalt I'm looking for. Better than Portishead b/c the escapism is varied and allusive rather than acquiescent and morose, Massive Attack is a crucial 90s outfit, but thin in ways too.

a very quirky, very mysterious trip hop album, mixing hints of ambient, lounge and dub music. i always like listening to albums that have a sound i really haven't heard before... many people, especially today seem to appreciate the aesthetic the album presents, all blurry and brooding... this album would absolutely hit the hardest if you listened to it late at night. some of the beats and vocals are a little strange... but i can, as the hip folks say, dig it. someone said in one of the song's comments that these guys should score for the next silent hill game. very interesting entry.

Not as good as their two top albums, but still i love the genre, so I had a good time

Overlooked classic. It may not be as groundbreaking as the group's debut but it certainly is an essential listen. Here, Massive Attack expand their sound with more guests, more strings, and overall a more memorable batch of songs, even if the highlights aren't as incredible as they were on the previous album. This record album marks the earliest notable credit of one my favorite lesser known artists Craig Armstrong, who co-wrote and plays piano on "Weather Storm" and "Heat Miser", and arranged the strings on "Sly". A strange thing I have to point out is: Why this was chosen for the book over their magnum opus follow up Mezzanine? Not complaining, I think both deserve a spot. Key tracks: Protection Karmacoma Three Sly

Perfectly fine ambient electronic music to edit your manuscripts to. 3/5 stars rounding up to 4 because I wouldn't be opposed to putting it on the background and half-listening while editing a manuscript again.

What a great record.

Mezzanine is better

Before this I only knew Massive Attack for the theme song to the TV show House. I like this album!

Super cool. I like that it’s different and has some good grooves.

Enjoyed this much more than Blue Lines.

just think how much better my blue lines review would be doing if i gave it the proper score of 4. i'm sorry, it was my second album, i was still calibrating!

Great album but if there is going to be a second Massive Attack record on this list, it should be Mezzanine.

Really like this

The funky bits still feel fresh

Solid album, really enjoyed.

I really dug the beats. I wasn’t a big fan of some of the vocalists but surprisingly that didn’t distract me from really enjoying this album.

Protection presents listeners with a beautiful composite of dub, rhythm and blues, and electronica. Massive Attack aided in pioneering a new sound of electronic music that would help shape the later years of the decade. Their unique inclusion of dub and trip hop melodies in their album help to set them apart from contemporaries like Portishead and provides flair that is unique to their style. The titular track "Protection" is as perfect as a smooth electronica ballad can get, while songs like "Karmacoma" showcase Massive Attack's ability to choose sonically distinct samples and put them into a groove. "Spying Glass" is a fantastically updated dub track that walks the line between traditional sounds and the bands stylistic bass. However, the cover at the end of the album is nearly unlistenable. Sweet jesus. It provides a valid reason not to listen to this album on repeat, but instead to restart at track one right after "Heat Miser" ends.

Wild that this is from 1994. Super ahead of its time. Was this the start of trip hop? Or at least what truly popularized the genre? Not the best Massive Attack album, but absolutely still essential.

I’m very new to trip hop, but this Massive Attack album seems like a stellar representation of the genre.

Great Album

Protection houses my favorite Massive Attack song, Spying Glass. A perfect example of how great Trip Hop could and should be. Sleek, sensual vibes with mystery and a heavy bass groove. Chef’s kiss! Overall, this is a good album and it is a perfect distillation of the Trip Hop sound, but it is not as groundbreaking as their first, Blue Lines, or as perfect as their next and high dark masterpiece, Mezzanine. I’d say it’s their transition record and that is just fine by me.

I really love the atmosphere Massive Attack creates. It's mysterious and lush. It's like you're stepping into their world and wandering around admiring it. Not sure they really nailed Light My Fire, but it was cool to hear where they took it.

This was great, first massive attack experience for me and it was definitely a great one, great production and instrumentals and the variety of songs was really nice and refreshing throughout. Favourites: protection, Karmacoma, weather storm, euro child and heat miser. That’s just highlights from a first listen though, there’s a lot to like about the rest of the songs aswell. Overall, 8/10.

i agree with laura. fav tracks: protection

This was good background music but honestly not really as exciting to me as their debut that we heard earlier. This definitely feels like a different use of trip hop; this feels like it could mostly run in full as accompaniment in some public environment (maybe not an actual rave because most of the songs I think are too chill for that), whereas blue lines had specific songs I could latch onto that felt self-contained and could be heard in many contexts, so it’s harder for me to connect with an album like this. But I can certainly see the appeal and the sounds are layered and interesting. also that was a very cool live cover of light my fire at the end—leave it to tricky to figure out how to make that song bearable.

really enjoyed this one. Easy to listen to.

wait loved!

Classic Electronica masterpiece.

A totally different vibe than other electronic albums that we've had and much more laid back. Made for very good driving music and something I could play in the classroom as students work. I added a few songs to my library and I could see myself adding more if a gave the album a second listen.

good production on this, enjoyed a few tracks and a really good vibe

A standard of the genre. An easy listen.

Way I see it this is a low 4. I enjoyed the album straight through and all of the different styles explored and can listen to this end to end without issue, but I don't expect this to have the same lasting impression as Mezzanine has. Standouts for me included Spying Glass (love the dubby play), Euro Child, and Sly (I really enjoy Nicolette's entries here -- reminds me of another trip-hop artist called Elsiane).

Not at all what I was expecting from this album cover and an artist name like "Massive Attack" I expected punk or grunge or industrial. Best trip hop album that I have listened to. Very polished and well produced. It felt amazing on my ears, almost like it was comfy and cozy. Soft but powerful beats.

That was some trancy stuff right there. One of those electronic albums that just flows very well. Really never got sick of any song because they were all well done

Still waiting on Mezzanine! But damn this is slapping 4 songs in. Love the variety and nuance of it all. Easy 4 for me for sounding like it should've come out 10 years later.

It took more than one listen to get in the vibe of this album. Really liked Nicolette's vocal style.

Heard it before. The title track is like a warm hug. Overall I do love this album but it just ain't as good as Mezzanine 4/5

It's no mezzanine, but it's still great. Any song with Tracey Thorn singing on it I'm bound to like.

A solid Trip Hop album that didn’t quite land for me the way I hoped it would. Favourite Songs: Protection, Spying Glass, Euro Child. Least Favourite Songs: Karmacoma, Light My Fire (Live).

This is good stuff, but I don't think it's as good as the awesome Mezzanine.

So, this is my first Massive Attack album? I would say I'm probably the first person in the world whose ever listened to Protection before Blue Lines or Mezzanine, but that's definitely not the case because of other people like me doing this project who didn't check out Massive Attack until getting an album of theirs from the project, and Mezzanine isn't even on the list, so we couldn't start with that one! Anyways, people say that this isn't their best album and I can kind of tell. With that said, I do like Protection quite a bit. Massive Attack is one of the biggest names in the trip hop scene, with the only name that even comes close being Portishead, who I have listened to an album from. That album, Dummy, was phenomenal. I love that album. Protection isn't as good, but it did evoke some of what I loved about Dummy, which I can now chalk up to being things that I like about trip hop as a whole. The production is probably the biggest part of this. Protection's production (try saying that five times fast) is great. It's got some good vibes. It's mostly chill, but you've got some slightly heavier parts of the album. The vocals are varied throughout the album, which I think is pretty cool. Some songs have more of a singing thing going on like Portishead, while others take more from hip-hop with the inclusion of fellow trip hop icon Tricky. The writing is somewhat interesting. The album's good. I enjoyed it and I am very intrigued to hear better albums of theirs. 4/5.

like massive attack, first time checking out this release. still like the others more, but it was a very good listen

I liked this journey into trip-hop, but I can see where people would say it sounds very samey. I did not like the cover they did of "Light My Fire". They made it their own, but it just didn't sound right.

Young massive attack

Pretty cool. Unique, well written. Creative. I dig it. Was wild about their doors cover, but the rest of the album was pretty good.

Sadly relegated to the shadow of the bigger, better follow-up for a quarter century, but it's still low-key great.

Can’t believe I slept on this album for so long in favor of Mezzanine and Blue Lines. Big mistake — the vocals are so smooth, and the blend of styles is unreal. It’s seriously great.

I was drawn to this record as a Tracey Thorn fan (Everything But the Girl), and the rest of the album definitely pulled me the rest of the way in.

Second Massive Attack album. Another good time.

it's a very sit down and relax type album, an easy listen.

Yeah, Massive Attack has no dud in their discography, so far.

Protection

Another good Massive Attack album. Headphone music, rainy day music. While not as exceptional as other albums in their discography, very good.

Protection is a smoother, more introspective follow-up to Blue Lines, swapping the raw grit of their debut for something cooler, silkier, and more refined. It's an album that moves like a slow-motion dream—lush, moody, and full of space to breathe. Tracks like the title song (featuring Tracey Thorn's ghostly vocals) and Weather Storm wash over you in waves, while Karmacoma and Spying Glass bring a more playful, off-kilter energy to the mix. The production is immaculate—every beat, sample, and subtle texture feels carefully placed, building a sound world that’s as emotionally rich as it is rhythmically hypnotic. While it might not hit with the same revolutionary force as Blue Lines, Protection is arguably the more cohesive listen—less raw, but deeper in mood. It's also a more collaborative album, with vocal contributions from Thorn, Tricky, and Horace Andy adding real character across the tracklist. If there’s any reason it doesn’t get a full 5, it’s only because a couple of tracks feel like palate cleansers more than essentials. Still, this is Massive Attack at their most elegantly brooding—a near-perfect balance of soul, dub, electronica, and atmosphere.

Big fan of their sound. Not their best album, but enjoyable.

The first three songs were boring. Then, it started to get more interesting. I’ll give it another try later on.

Really enjoyed this, had plenty of variety in it and excellent music in the background. Didn't quite have the required bop - level for the full 5*

That was goooood.

Great album - misses some of the thumping tracks that are on mez and blue lines but still really good

Feels almost like a hits album, even though it's relatively early. Probably because there are so many different singers. Very chill mood. I like it.

I'm still a sucker for Triphop. Really enjoyed this one

Awesome love Massive Attack nice beats blend between singing and rapping chilled out but pionient.

Good shit. Immaculate vibe. Hits the right spot between gritty, sexy, sophisticated. Amazing beats, and great vocal performances throughout. If you focus on it too much, it can drag a bit in parts, but it doesn't detract much from the experience. Put it on and just let it take you away. Though, I must say, the cover of "Light My Fire" at the end was a bit weird. Certainly an odd inclusion. It doesn't gel with the rest of the album. Fav tracks: Protection, Karmacoma, Three, Better Things, Sly

A beautiful album, full of depth and atmosphere and some snarl. The production and sound are ground breaking and formed a foundation stone for trip hop as a genre that still has its impacts today. As they developed their sound, the addition of real anthems and accessible song craft raised the bsr again but this is the begining.

Ericmuziek!

I listened to Mezzanine for the first time about two months ago and I absolutely loved it since, so I am very happy to get given another Massive Attack album on here. This is really good for sure. The variety of different vocalists keep things fresh, which is always nice with an Electronic album, and it's a great downtempo album after a long day - or to get absolutely blazed to, take your pick. It doesn't get a 5 because they've done better stuff, and some tracks are weaker than others, such as Spying Glass. Horace Andy has done some bangers with these guys, but this wasn't one of them. It's also not an album you can play at any point in the day. I have to be in the right mood to properly enjoy it. One small annoyance I have with Massive Attack is that I don't get to hear enough of Robert's vocals. I think he's a great vocalist, but he doesn't have that much to sing on this or Mezzanine. I wish he was given more.

Very chill instrumental album so far. Eclectic sounds. Super laid back throughout the entire record. Electronic elements are pretty cool. The Doors cover is pretty rad. Fun record and would for sure put this on if the vibe calls for it.

Love Massive Attack :)

I might start playing a game with myself predicting how many reviews down before the first grumpy American rock bro complaining about too many UK entries on the list. I think they're nicely balanced against the two or three Red Hot Chilli Peppers entries.

olisi viisi tähteä jos vähemmän brittiläisyyttä. jos puhuisivat vähemmän brititä niin mahtava albumi. noh ehkä vähän traumoja tästä projektista, pitää antaa propseja ei vähään aikaan indirock tuolta kirotusta pläntistä. haluaisin kiittää ylläpidosta siitä, ehkä halusivat että poisalta heti. poisalta heti ja muutamassa intervalleissa hyviä albumeja ja nyt pelkkää tulta loppusuora. projektin loppusuora , highway to hell nii nsanotusti heh. hold up kuuntelin just penultimaattisen biisin tästä ja hengitys kuin jarre oxygen of life, of the earth breathe konsanaan!!! tätä täytyy harkita jatkoanalyysissäni.. jaahas ja mikäs tuo doors koveri on olevinaan.. otetaans tämäkin mukaan- kokonaisuushan tämä paketti on eikä mikään karmacoma

really cool at times and pretty good throughout. good for some HW

It is a beautiful record with lovely vocals and interesting production. It is definitely a product of the time, while have a feeling it could sound fresh if it came out today.

Ethereal. Chilling. Entrancing. Imaginative. Genre-spanning. I would put this in the 4.5 stars category I think. Not as widely appealing and era defining as what I think a 5 star should be.

1/30/25. Always love good trip hop music, and Massive Attack delivers on this front. Really enjoyed this record.

mega cool! sehr chilligi und trotzdem nöd eintönigi musig. nur s letzte lied gfallt mer wükli nöd, si singed so falsch und es isch so vill lärm und sound effects und sehr wenig harmonisch oder melodisch im vergliich zum rest. de zweiti song seit mer au nöd so zue, glaub au weg de sprechende stimm, aber nachem erste song, wo mer sehr guet gfalle het, ischs au schwierig to keep up. allgemein gfallt mer d mischig us elektronische kläng/instrument, sanfter perkussion und de verschiedene singstimme. singstimme: vor allem tracey thorn im track 1 und 6 gfallt mer sehr guet, ich find iri starchi stimm ide seichte elektronik en sehr gewinnbringende kontrast (si tönt fasch biz wie d whitney houston, oder?). d stimm vode männliche sänger und vode andere sängerin nicolette sind weniger mis. de horace andy im spying glass het recht e reggae stimm, au biz en stilbruch woni no cool find. ich find de nicolette iri stimm passt sehr guet id musig (si passt halt wükli, nöd sonen stilbruch wied tracey oder de horace) und d melodie wo si singt sind mega schön (z.b. in sly). s schnuufe als perkussionsinstrument in heat miser findi recht nice.

Pure adrenaline

Very good album. Wasn’t blown away but I did really enjoy it. It’s got some pretty great songs on this album but it definitely has a lot of skips as well. I liked the beats and the production on this album, as well. I looked into some of the bands other singles and this band’s composition really shines. Definitely check them out.

Not what I was expecting from a group called Massive Attack, that’s for sure.

With a good pair of headphones I fell into this and grooved to this album. Still think Massive Attack is better when there aren’t lyrics. 4/5

Cracking Album.

Yes, but the light my fire cover seemed unnecessary.

Excellent. Top tier album, great sound that brought back good memories.

El 94 no tenía nada que ver con el año 91 en que debutaron: Madonna andaba totalmente perdida con Bedtime Stories, Los Stones Roses naufragaban con su Second coming, Nirvana lo había cambiado todo y K. Cobain se suicidaba ese mismo año que editaban tambíen discos BLUR: Parklife, PORTISHEAD: Dummy, MANO NEGRA: Casa Babylon, SUEDE: Dog Man Star, NAS: Illmatic, PAVEMENT: Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, OASIS: Definitely Maybe, NEIL YOUNG: Sleeps With Angels, AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB: San Francisco, R.E.M.: Monster, HOLE: Live Through This, JEFF BUCKLEY: Grace, THE AUTERS: Now I’m A Cowboy, NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS: Let Love In, JOHNNY CASH: American Recordings, SEBADOH: Bakesale, UNDERWORLD: Dubnobasswithmyheadman, STONE ROSES: Second Coming, BECK: Mellow Gold, MARK LANEGAN: Whiskey For The Holy Ghost, TOM PETTY: Wildflowers, THE BEASTIE BOYS: Ill Comunication, KRISTIN HERSH: Hips And Makers, SABRES OF PARADISE: Haunted Dancehall, JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION: Orange, NIRVANA: Unplugged In New York, ALI FARKA TOURE & RY COODER: Talking Timbuktu, PULP: His’n’Hers, THE PRODIGY: Music For The Gilted Generation, VERUCA SALT: American Thighs, THE WALKABOUTS: Satisfied Ma, MANIC STREET PREACHERS: The Holy bible, Elvis Costello: Brutal Youth, Smash de The Offspring

Massive Attack had an incredibly consistent run in the 90s, starting with Blue Lines and ending with Mezzanine, but Protection happened in between and is, for me, the weakest of the three. That's not to say it's weak, by any means. Protection, Karmacoma and Sly are all fantastic, brooding, sublime pieces of trip-hop magic. There's a great vibe that doesn't give up for the full LP but it does sag in the second half.

The attack is far from massive here, but indeed very chill. The album has a great way of putting you into a groovy trance and sort of forces you to accept what it's offering.

Massive Attack architects a subtlety sophisticated expansion on their trip-hop foundation, constructing new wings of dub, soul, and electronic design through refined production and intricate arrangements.

Massive Attack is o e of those groups whose music I always enjoy but I've never sought out and listened to a full album before. I enjoyed this a lot, they always sound so cool.

That's not my taste in music. But interesting music.

ok i guess 4/5

Very ggood ambient / trip hop music, from the undeniable masters of the genre. Not my favourite Massive Attack album, but that still makes it a great album.

Atmospheric electronic album. I preferred the instrumental tracks, but honestly all of it was very good. Stand-out: Heat Miser

Very good album, can't believe I haven't heard it before. One to listen to again

Yeah it's not Mezzanine but it does the job

It’s electronica, but I kinda like it. Make great background music! I’d listen to it again

One of my more favorite electronic albums on this program so far.

Mezzanine should be here instead, but this album is fine.

I immediately like this better than their debut album; they bring their trippy yet warm sounds into a more modern/accessible forum - plus the vocals here for a change I actually like (track 1: "Protection") from Tracey Thorn (of Everything But the Girl...). The space given in the music is perfect - creating tension that rarely breaks yet is still always compelling. Combined with the great instrumentation - creative/tasteful synths, excellent subtle guitar work, drum loops that somehow don't get stale or frustrating. It's not perfect to me because of some of the vocalists - I vastly prefer no vocals or Thorn's (tracks 1 and 6, "Better Things") to the others (although the Tricky cuts definitely match the vibe); wishing an entire album's worth was done with her but the great music [notable exception being the crappy "Light My Fire" cover] makes this one to keep. 8/10 4 stars.

Favourite songs: Euro Child, Protection, Heat Miser, Karmacoma Least favourite songs: Spying Glass 4/5

I was surprised by this.. I liked it more than I thought I would..

Love this album and Massive Attack

This was a really chill album. I did not enjoy the final track (the cover of "Light My Fire") but otherwise, I really liked the trip hop vibe, and I thought all of the vocalists had nice voices.

Rob: Massive Attack, No Protection, the song is: Radiation Ruling the Nation. Barry: Oh, kind of a new record. Very - very nice Rob. A sly declaration of new classic status slipping into a list of old, safe ones. Truth be told, I'm not sure why our record store owner chose No Protection instead of the original Protection, but that's just me. I like Protection a lot, Karmacoma was one of the songs I first downloaded when people I admired on the internet talked about liking Massive Attack (along with Teardrop, obviously). There are some things I might choose to leave off (ok, that final live cover) but it's really solid for popping on and letting run.

I didn't realize I had such nostalgia for this album. But it totally took me back to the early 2000's when I'd listen to Napstered MP3s of it while working, or just the sound of distance music while hiking around Burning Man.

This isn't my favorite Massive Attack album, but it might be my second favorite. Just chock full of creamy trip hop goodness 4/5

I really enjoy the trip hop genre of music and massive attack are one the better known artists. Very cool

Will always be a favourite of mine

This was a great surprise! I've never listened to these people before at all. I'm usually not a fan of all electronic stuff, but they use the vocals so well over the top that it pulls it together very nicely. I think this is the best electronic music I've heard.

Solid chill dj ish album

Never heard of them. When I hear Tracey Thorn (EBTG is a favorite) on the first song, I was intrigued. This is an interesting mix of styles and it works well.

loved it.

I was not familiar with Massive Attack before they popped up preciously and now I have enjoyed both albums.

4/5. Massive Attack hits again for another album of experimental but more accessible electronic beats. Each song is enjoyable on its own, most of them including vocals, which act more as the primary instrument than for the lyrics. Not many notes, just not a perfect album, some songs not as enjoyable as others but good either way. Kinda wasn't feeling the Doors cover. Best Song: Sly, Protection, Three

Good ambient music, I think I like trip-hop?

I have already documented in a previous posting for Massive Attack that I was massively betrayed when the track "Heat Miser" had nothing to do with a 1974 Christmas TV special. "Previous posting for Massive Attack"? I wondered. Surely there are lots of artists that I haven't heard from in over 1000 albums so far, and do we need another from this group? No. No is the correct answer. It's true. That said, I think I liked this more than the last Massive Attack album and so here we go.

I've been sick with a cold for a couple days and have started this several times only to fall asleep during the third track. It's a nice loopy soundtrack for a fever dream. I finally made it through awake and it's good for that, too

Well, I like Massive Attack I guess. I wasn’t excited about this but it was quite nice to listen to and defied my increasingly jaded initial reactions. Especially that Rankin & Bass favorite “Heat Miser.” Also an interesting take on “Light My Fire.”

different

I used to always just be right on the edge of grasping the appeal of Massive Attack, and in some ways I still am. But I think it helped that I listened to this at 5:30 am while I buttered the forklift around the warehouse at the beginning of a quiet work day. Massive Attack isn’t meant to be grasped super hard, and this album helped me realize that. Great background music, great weed smoking music

Love them but this isn’t quite up there with their best for me. Gets a bit samey. Still better than most though

This is one of those albums that has stood the test of time pretty well. But if you could have heard it back in the ‘90s, it was so ahead of its time. It’s a really nice laid-back album, but the soundscape is what really sets it apart and makes it unlike anything else that was around in the early ’90s.

I liked this much more than I expected. Good instrumentals.

This is tight. Hits harder than more ignorant UK electronics such as the beta band. Or maybe I just prefer trip hop to house. But, real songs, with real beats. Nice weird light my fire cover. I drink on a daily basis though it seldom cools my temper. It never cools my temper.

Another great Massive Attack album.

This is my first time listening to Massive Attack. I have heard of them before and was vaguely aware that they were more along the lines of electronica. Idk if it just hit me while I was in a good mood but I really enjoyed this. Heavy heavy trip hop vibes. What put it over the top for me was the dub and reggae influences. The Light My Fire cover featuring the great Horace Andy at the end was so cool. Looking forward to listening to more of their stuff (I think there’s at least 2 more of their albums on this list).

Very chill. Enjoyed it.

Started off so hot and then sort of fizzled, but this was a really amazing listen. It’s been forever since I sat with an MA album. Great grading music!

Good album, love the vibes. Favourite songs: Protection and Better Things

Nice samples and music.

Very good mellow ambient music. Good to work by.

Good shit.

I'm 400 plus albums into the list and this was an absolute bolt out of the blue for me. Never heard of it before and now it's on my list for the next time I go to the record store. Believe in the process, folks, believe.

Te atrapa.

I liked the vibe of this. I think I need to give it another listen to fully appreciate it.

My first taste of Massive Attack. Feels like they inspired so many of the trends in lo-fi hip hop that persist today. Some really tasty instrumentals here. Great features, especially Tracey Thorne’s. Love the John Carpenter “Halloween Theme” nods on “Heatmiser.” Favorite tracks: “Protection,” “Weather Storm,” “Heatmiser.” Excited to hear more from MA. Don’t particulary need the Doors cover at the end 😂 but I appreciate the effort!

This surprised me and intrigued me in a way that no other 90's trip hop / electronic album ever has. I was confused and turned around by the massive transition from track 1 to track 2, the very strange 90's dub record. Honestly they should win an award for the weirdness of the "Light My Fire" cover at the very end. Super expansive, cinematic, weeeeeird! It's one that I'll need more time with, but at 350 albums into 1001, "surprise" usually means good. 4/5

Added on my music Lounge folder. To re-listen again. 4/5

really neat, I will definitely listen again

Overall this album features really alluring sound effects that add to the vocals and instruments. Protection: A nice chill track, doesn't feel dragged out and has some really good sounding background effects, vocals, and instrumental track. Great send-off to the track with light rain sfx. Overall a really good start to the album. 5/5 Karmacoma: Really great beat throughout the song, once the chorus starts there's specific whistle/airy/eerie sounds that give atmosphere to the track. 4/5 Three: Nice beat with soft vocals. 4/5 Weather Storm: Includes a chill atmosphere with a very pleasant piano track and a soft beat. 5/5 Spying Glass: I wasn't totally paying attention at the time but I remember it sounding like a 5/5 Better Things: 4/5 Euro Child: Slightly repetitive imo but a good track to listen to. 3/5 Sly: Great soft vocal track with strings appearing from the background occasionally, which enhances the overall atmosphere of the song. Strong beat throughout the song. 5/5 Heat Miser: Amazing repeating piano melody that catches the listener from 0:00-0:40. Breathing sounds and strings instruments dominate the first half of the song. The piano, strings, and bass take priority here, with a hint of synth around 2:07. Definitely my favorite instrumental on album, 5/5. Light my Fire: My least favorite on the album, still a 3/5.

This is everything I don't like about Brit 90s music

Massive Attack - was good to hear this again. Such good music, it's great to work to. I really liked Mezzanine, which was when I first heard them, but this is good. And I had the pleasure of seeing them, with my daughter, in Houston. Great experience!

I have known this band for the House theme and was slightly disappointed that Teardrop wasn't on this album. Altogether though, this feels like a precursor to The XX. Moody and a good sound, I like the different singers throughout it.

Classic trip hop. Can’t say that I like it as much as their debut but still a great revisit

Not my go to Massive Attack album, but it’s warm and embracing. A lovely listen.

i enjoyed protection much more than massive attack's debut album! while i try to judge every album by itself, i couldn't help but notice that massive attack developed a more mature sound. every song was different, yet there was this atmospheric feeling that connected all of them. i think the electronic aspect was what tied them together. but still, they dabbled in several different genres, which normally make an album sound disjointed, but the songs were cohesive. one of the vocalists' voice grated on me, though i'll chalk that up to personal preference. despite that, i'd give a 3.5, rounded up to a 4 for the immaculate vibes.

I really enjoyed this album. Very diverse from cool jazz to more funk-ish to other styles as well. Many tracks are on my liked song list on Spotify now!

Gorgeous album. Yes a couple of fillers but can forgive that given the quality of the rest. Tracy Thorn has one of THE great voices.

I really didn't expect to like this album. I'm not sure why I do. It will never be a favorite, but it really makes me wish for a 3.5 star option. Smooth sounds ideal for chilling or sitting at the hobby table.

Really good album. You can really hear the improvements from the last in production and Songwriting. Clean and engaging throughout.. High 7

It's most certainly not an essential album. There's really not much substance to it. The first few songs are forgettable (title track aside). But, It's a groovy, trance-like, trip-hop album and this shit is so up my alley that I really enjoyed the listen and it will end up on my chill playlists. 3.5/5 Fav track: Euro Child

Strong 7/10 id say - really rich production and more of a UK chill atmosphere than Blue Lines or Mezzanine

Chill background music

Pretty relaxing and mellow album, with a bit of dub added. Enjoyed the several different singers.

Such a great album to either focus on or put on in the background

Ganz nett

I think i might have this album on CD but don't remember it. Listening while cleaning up/ laying down. Production on first track is so crisp. Not expecting trip-hop reggae on second track but I'm here for it Like that the third track is called three. Not sure about the dude repeating "three" in the background though. Fourth track piano is gorgeous. Love that the album keeps throwing new things out there but they don't overstay their welcome. Fifth track goes back to reggae, not as novel or good as 2nd. Sixth track is back to business. What a groove. Inspiration for beats. Seventh is even better beat. Whole song is a mood. Maybe the best so far. Ok now we're starting to sound like a Metroid Prime level. Which is a good thing. Vocals on Eight are interesting. Nine feels like a combo of all the cool stuff (minus the reggae) they did up to this point. Piano and strings with more in your face electronic production. Breathing sound is weird in a good way. Not sure how I feel about a live version of The Doors to close out the album but we'll see... yeah not really a fan. Doesn't sound so good compared to how clean the rest of the album sounds. Kinda an epilogue I guess but I'm not into it being part of the album. Also cracking up at the idea of a similar band covering The Doors in 2024. Overall, an amazing experience that feels like it was pushing boundaries in almost every track, even if there were a color missteps along the way.

Absolutely chill. Ignored this band for far too long only ever hearing Teardrop. What a mistake. Corrected myself about 5 years ago and haven't looked back. Stand out tracks: Protection, Karmacoma, Sly

Favorite tracks: Protection, Weather Storm, Better Things Rating: 4/5

took me on a journey, very nice album

Pretty good! I dig the music a lot. I feel like it’s a 3.5 at least. The production is great. The vocals I could kind of do without. They might grow on me though.

A great album except for the dreadful Doors cover that is tacked on at the end

Amazing and can’t believe I’ve never heard of it. I really enjoyed the more hip hop sounds

schon strong

I can only describe this album as “weed-inspired elevator music” but I mean it in the best way. Each song has its own unique style yet the album as a whole has a consistent vibe and it made for an enjoyable listen. It definitely deserves to be on this list.

A great trip hop release with a log of dub tho not there peak.

Great chill vibe. Perfectly transforming psychedelia which will change your mood. For the better.

This album has a TON of variety. I got faked out because I didn’t like the first two songs that much, but this is a pretty good album.

This was great, good production, good vocals. I enjoy some of the longer tracks as well.

Already a Massive Attack fan, had mostly listened to their newer stuff-- this one is so good, and prompted me to learn a little more about their history. Unsurprisingly started from club DJs and scoring movies. Fantastic chill sexy vibe. 4 - Will definitely listen again

The weakest of the first three Massive Attack albums. A couple of muzak tracks and an entirely unnecessary cover of Light My Fire have cost it a star.

Mostly marvellous.

trip-hop, trip-skip and trip-jump

"Protection," "Karmacoma," and "Euro Child" are incredible, building up layers and constantly adding motifs. You can just feel how they pushed electronica forwards by slowing it down and saying, "hey, this can be intelligent and tender and meaningful." It's just a shame that the rest of this album sounds like keyboard demo modes, and the awful "Light My Fire" cover is so unnecessary and incongruent.

Massive Attack is great, haven't listened to this one in forever.

Some quality tracks and another great album.

Every element adds up so nicely. Surprisingly melodic. Tracey Thorn ♡

Verging on a 5 tbh. Not bad for their 3rd best album. Karmacoma being the peak.

Shit started off fire. Ended eh. Fire sounds

Really liked this album and its vibes. Except for the cover of Light My Fire, which was pretty mediocre.

I am a big fan of Blue Lines and Mezzanine but weirdly hadn't listened to this album. The tracks with Tracy Thorn are great. Overall this feels like Blue Lines pt2,its not as exciting and the live track at the end is totally out of place but overall still good.

Nothing I’ll really listen to over and over, but both of the Massive Attack albums I’ve gotten so far are perfect albums to play while studying or reading.

Good stuff

Very cool and chill album. Whatsherface has a beautiful voice, but I really dig the dub-influenced tracks and instrumentals. Actually went round twice in the mix but had to change coz we were driving and it got dangerously mesmeric. I’d only ever heard Mezzanine before (long time fav) so silly I’ve never dig deeper into their catalog.

Heard before: some So it seems that the general consensus is that this one isn't a good as Blue Lines. But to me, they doubled down on the best parts (dubby influences and deep grooves) and added Tracey Thorn, one of my faves. How can you go wrong? All this, plus a shoutout to the Specials. I could have done without the Doors cover, but prior to that, this is a even better than the first one. Top tracks: Better Things, Protection, Karmacoma

Trip hop. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Trip hop

Massive Attack uses a wide array of genres and styles to compose a sound that is not only unique, but keeps you on the edge of your seat with every subsequent track in the tracklist

Massive Attack will always have a special place in my heart. The only thing I did not like about it was the decision to use the super boring Doors-song as a closer.

Great lil blend of hip hop and electronica, enjoyed it!

Not my favorite of their albums (that would be Mezzanine), but the Tracey Thorn tracks add a star.

This girl I know needs some shelter She don't believe anyone can help her She's doing so much harm, doing so much damage But you don't wanna get involved You tell her she can manage And you can't change the way she feels But you could put your arms around her I know you wanna live yourself But could you forgive yourself If you left her just the way you found her? I stand in front of you I'll take the force of the blow, protection This is some quintessential 90s sound. Massive Attack is a great band, and this is a good album. Not great, but good. 4/5

Great album - really enjoyed! 4/5

Gorillaz vibes

Lush and ethereal, transports me back to the 90s. Absolutely will listen again 8/10

Very nice, love the atmosphere it sets. The last song feels out of place though

Never heard of Massive Attack but I loved it, very cool album. Sounds very 90s somehow - in the “good” way. Also gives me some lo-if vibes which is cool. Definitely see myself returning to this, and many songs I really liked. Hard to decide between a 4 and 5, but I think I will settle for a strong 4.

Really cute and catchy, chill and pleasant. Unique uses of synths and samplings even within the context of othwr massive attack stuff. Really enjoyed

This is way better than I expected, trip hop tends to be a little hit or miss for me but I find this one very relaxing

loved the atmosphere, instrumentation, and afrocentric styles. my only notable critique is that every track dragged on for longer than necessary.

smooth as hell

Not my favorite MA album but a peach nonetheless..

Yeah I was bamboozled listening to this, but it had some unique sombre sounds that said yes to me. A really odd soundtrack, but I liked it. It said BIG UP MY HOMIE LISTEN TO THIS

Chill and atmospheric trip hop. Feels grand with the piano and string effects. Just like with Blue Lines, I appreciate the contributions of every vocalist, and Tracey Thorn from Everything But the Girl was an excellent addition matching the mood. Had an overall lounge vibe with tracks like "Weather Storm", but others were more dancey with a techno touch like "Three" and "Spying Glass." Has the hits, and every track (except the "Light my Fire" bonus track) felt necessary.

Protection provides itself as a connective tissue for the next set of seismic shifts in the trip-hop scene during the mid 1990s, from the lines uttered by Tricky that formed the backdrop of many a classic songs from what would be his debut album Maxinquaye to Tracey Thorn's appearance in the opening title track that foreshadowed Everything But the Girl's mingling with downtempo electronic music and the rather cinematic features that sweep through the deep cuts of this record. All in all, an intriguing follow-up to Blue Lines and a harbinger of things to come. Favorites: Protection, Karmacoma, Weather Storm, Spying Glass, Euro Child, Sly.

I gave the last Massive Attack album a meh rating and I liked this more... but that's possible because Tracey Thorn is on it and I like Everything But The Girl and her presence made it better.

Some classic massive attack. I think I slightly prefer blue lines and mezzanine, but this is still a great album

not my typical listen but man, was this smooth - this was gooooood

Not my favourite MA album but obviously still great.

Highlights: Protection, Karma Coma, Sly. Top-heavy album but still consistent. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Way better than I remember! This is a re-listen, I orginally heard it 3 years ago and thought it was alright. But hearing it now? Very impressed, it was much better than I expected. Nice blend of songs - chill trip hop vibes to more hip hop sounding songs. Exhibits the perfect levels of chill and can almost instantly make you feel calm. I love the songs: weather storm, Protection, Euro child and Sly. Listening to this has revived my appreciated for Massive Attack and made me remember again why I decided to do this whole 1001 album generator thing in the first place. It's worth it :)

Lovely little trip into the abyss

Bordering on cheesy but generally great in an early 90s way. Tracey Thorn is the secret weapon here. Her voice fits the mood perfectly. Contrary to every other reviewer, I think the 'Light My Fire' cover is kinda fun, albeit in the style of a drunk guy at karaoke.

nice album, music from my Youth, always entertaining, fresh new sound in the nineties

Massive Attack, at the roots of trip hop, still feel fresh and contemporary, with lots of experimentation and samples serving the purpose of creating an overall trippy and chill atmosphere. Still not better than Mezzanine, in my opinion, but a truly great one.

This one was better than I expected. I am not the biggest fan of Massive Attack, but this one was close to Mezzanine in vibe, an album I quite enjoy. Nocturnal, dark, groovy, it's a pleasant listen throughout, even If I found that it became a bit repetitive after the first half. 7,9/10

What a frickin cool album this thing is! I was a bit disappointed with the closer but everything else slaps. I love the mix of genres with some reggae inspired stuff, some beautiful vocals in some, and classical infused cuts as well. The beats on all of these are just smooth as hell and groove hard. 8/10

Excellent

Overall, some good songs and I would listen to most, but not all.

Some of the original triphop right there. Drags a bit in the middle but is an important origin

Trip hop. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

I enjoyed this, really just slow going smooth groovy good elevator music type beat. Could help me get into my feels and have space to reflect and think or just have it playing in the background like I’m a main character in my down moment montage. Overall solid listen with the caveat that it’s really for a mellow time

I had no idea what to expect... I was pleasantly surprised.

Tykkään MA:sta tosi paljon mutta ihmetyttää miksi juuri tämä levy on mukana listalla. Itse olisin äänestänyt debyytin puolesta. Hieno ja leppoisa levy tämäkin! Nautin kovasti. 4/5

This is a whoooooooole vibe

Fun, chill album. Definitely worth listening to once, and a few s9ngs will forever be in my overall shuffle. I'd score 8t 3.5 if I could do half stars.

Great album. Some fabulous tracks on it. Took me back!

Karmacoma was literally everywhere when it came out, as such I'm a bit sick of it. But could never hear Protection too many times, wonderful song. I was never particularly taken by Tricky's solo stuff, aside from Black Steel (which is kind of a rock cover of Public Enemy anyway). Anyway yeah, played this to death during my uni years so will always be evocative of that particular era, plus the sound is very much of its time, hello also to Leftfield. A mix of melancholic but beautiful songs, swooshing instrumentals and modern dub. I had no idea it was made amid so much turmoil for the band. Nevertheless, it still stands up. Best tracks: Sly, Protection, Spying Glass, Heat Miser.

A bit too wild for a trip hop album, but nice nonetheless. That "Light My Fire" cover is annoying btw.

Wonderful triphop album.

I finally found an electronica album I like and it's the one everybody else hates. Oh well. Best track: Heat Miser

could put this on and vibe all day

Great great great album. "Protection" is 10/10

Corker

Listening to this after the last two suggestions was a breath of fresh air. Tracey Thorn is a fantastic vocalist and her with Massive Attack is a brilliant pairing. This IS an album that people should be told to listen to.

Definitely a cool album, different in a good way! didnt expect to like it but i did

Ethereal, dancy and grooving.

there are better massive attack albums. there are also worse massive attack albums.

Large scuffle

Love this album. One of my all time favourites for sure

i like teardrop but IDK their other songs.

Good vibes good times

Not quite as focused as the albums either side of it in MA's discography, but still a great collection of genre-pushing soundscapes and hypnotic grooves. Sure, some of it sounds like video game music... but it all works

Dodgy doors cover at the end but whole album cool asf

Now I understand why I always confuse Massive Attack with Everything But the Girl and Mazzy Star---the timeline, the vibe, the cool esthetic, and of course b/c Tracey Thorn sings the first tune on this fantastic album.

A great album, not as good as mezzanine or blue lines. I’m also absolutely shocked to not even see mezzanine in the 1001 albums! It’s an absolute belter!!

i love it

Love that for me

Moody and haunting. Maintains its freshness all these years later. Multiple vocalists keeps things varied. The sampling of the Tuvan throat singing on "Karamacoma" blew my mind, and I like nearly every song on this album, but it definitely loses some momentum towards the end.

It's one thing to hear an album where all the songs are completely new to you, but another to be immersed in a whole new sound entirely. This is steady, chill, and cool; it could be a soundtrack to an indie game or a record you play while you're high. It's very obviously a product of its time but that's not necessarily a bad thing, instead it brings back memories of the decade or reminds you of some of your favorite 90s songs that you've since forgotten. I'm particularly drawn to the instrumental tracks, it's like if the lofi beats to study to music was actually good. The rest of the album is good too, though. Overall, standout tracks are Protection, Weather Storm, Euro Girl and Heat Miser.

loved it, and am glad to see that it's not the only album by them on the list, excited to get the other one!!

Overall a good album, my views very similar to the previous one I listened to

Is this an good album? Yes, really good. Is this a classic? I'm less sure. Enjoyed listening (and re-listening), proper chilled out, (and love Tracey Thorn's vocals on Protection), but later on feels forgettable when compared to Blue Lines or Mezzanine.

Interesting. A bit slow for me I thought initially, but it grew on me, and I enjoyed listening to it. When the album had finished I didn’t think that I would be listening to it more than once, but by the evening I was playing it again, and I enjoyed it even more the second time around.

FAV TRACKS: PROTECTION, WEATHER STORM, BETTER THINGS, EURO CHILD, SLY, HEAT MISER The production is pretty unique, really enjoyed this record. 8/10

4 stars

This and the Mad Professor remix album would be a great double lp.

not bad

Give me 90s electronica any day. Not my fave album by them but interesting none the less - I really enjoyed Weather Storm.
