Reviews (page 3 of 8)

7/10 - there are some pretty good songs. Like pretty standard rock but some of them worked. I didn’t love that it was live. Idk why but the way they said “I want you to want… me” brought me back to some time.

Actually a solid live album

The energy is great and the guys sound like they're having fun. I need to listen to more Cheap Trick.

this one is a stone cold classic. i'm not the hugest cheap trick fan but i enjoy some of their stuff. i've tried to listen to some of their studio output and in my opinion it pales in comparison to this one. the energy here is high, it's fun, it's raucous. the highlight here for me has always been the rhythm section. bun e carlos knocks it out of the park here and tom petersson holds down the low end in a satisfying manor. rick nielsen's lead guitar is off the rails and fun. at one point, in one of his solos, he even pays tribute to the beatles, referencing the lick from 'please please me.' that being said, although fun, the track listing here is a bit uneven. there are some absolute great live tracks here in my opinion: 'come on, come on,' 'ain't that a shame,' and, of course, the omnipresent 'i want you to want me,' but everything else here comes off a little more middling. nothing else here is awful, to be clear, but i find it leaves a little to be desired. still, all in all, this is a fun album that i have always really enjoyed listening to.

Great live crowd energy. The band really nails their performance. A good album.

Rockford’s finest, halfway around the world. Humbling yet unpretentious. I found the crowd’s energy to be genuinely moving, and I’m really happy that Tokyo embraced a band from good old Illinois.

Cheap Trick is from my hometown, so I feel an affinity for them. Surrender is one of my all-time faves. I think their brand of rock is distinctly authentic and fun and good-natured. A surprising number of live albums have come up on the list lately (this is the third in two weeks), but this one was so fun! All bangers, no bummers. I'm sure there's bias creeping in here, but because this is the only Cheap Trick album on the list, I'm giving it a 4. I genuinely think I will listen to this again.

When the music matches the energy this is fantastic. Surrender is perfection.

Lotta energy. Lotta bangers. I thoroughly enjoyed this, and as someone who doesn't know Cheap Trick at all, I'm excited to hear more from them. Each track flows into the next smoothly and at breakneck speed, and I think the show is paced really well. Best Track: Need Your Love Worst Track: Goodnight

Very good live album

I’m not much of a live album girlie, but after a song-by-song comparison between live and recorded versions, I get it. There’s more connectivity with the listeners, more electricity, more everything. Favorite song: Hello There (duh - also such a great way to start an album, or a concert). Also shout out to the Ain’t That a Shame cover. Least favorite: Big Eyes Knew before? Sorta, but as separate albums.

Not a huge fan of this band, but this is a very solid live album.

4.5 ★★★★

Great live set from a good point were pop band. 4 stars.

This rips way harder than I expected it to. Great energy start to finish and a really nice job on the cutting floor sequencing together the different shows. Notable standouts for me were Big Eyes, Ain't That a Shame, and Clock Strikes Ten is a great closer. For a live album this did a great job of capturing the live feel of an energetic show. Not my favorite by any means, but for what it is this is well done. I'd say the lowest 4 possible.

Never really been the biggest Cheap Trick fan, but I think this being a live album bumps it up 1 star because of the energy. Would be a fool to not admit that Surrender is one of the catchiest songs I know. Probably overall as a low 4 cause I did find myself really rocking out at points.

This was banging

Rockiges Hippie Album mit guten Songs. Die Mischung aus Hair und Rocky Horror Picture Show passt irgendwie. “I want you to want me” ist das bekannteste Stück des Albums und darf au keiner 70er Party fehlen ebenso wie “I need your love”.

One of the greatest live albums ever recorded, the sheer energy is contagious. However, it has some filler songs, so not a perfect album but a solid four-and-a-half one.

I had never knowingly heard Cheap Trick before, and didn't know what to expect. And, actually, this is surprisingly enjoyable in a 'this is a bit shit and predictable, but it's making me smile' way. I'm no fan of live albums, and especially not self indulgent Deep Purple 'Made in Japan' bullshit, but the bridge section between Need Your Love and Ain't That A Shame is great, and Surrender is a genuinely good song ... but then I listen a bit harder and it sounds a bit like Status Quo, Suzi Quattro and Showaddywaddy blended together into some weird showband and put out this album. But, then again, I seem to quite like that.

Solid rock album. Some classic songs on it and the band's tight, throughout. 3.5* and I think I need to round up considering it's a live album.

Fun album!

Good live album. A bunch of Cheap Tricks songs are the definitive version for me because my local radio station played them exclusively. A lot of this though needs a remaster.

Great live album

Enjoyed it, but not a 5*er. Some bangers on there though

I love Cheap Trick. So, duh, I am a big fan. Now... I don't always love live albums because there are sound issues and ambient noises that distract from the recorded session "pure" sound. However, sometimes that is exactly what I want to get away from, so sometimes I seek out the live performances. In this case I am on the fence, and Cheap Trick videos are a pleasure to watch, so maybe I would not choose this as my go to album to share with people unfamiliar. On the other hand their song "Surrender" was only one week old when this was recorded, which makes it kiind of special. So how to rate this? Ah Screw it. I love these guys!

A fun rock concert

Powerful energy on stage. They sounded like they were having fun. And I quite enjoyed listening to it in a certain mood.

This was before my time, yet still somehow a throwback for me. Just great rock n roll. I've questioned the belonging of live albums on this list but this makes the case.

I had never heard Cheap Trick before (although the name was familiar) and mind you, that's why the 70s is my favorite, because albums like that come out every day and even though I don't know these songs, I had so much fun listening to them, which makes me very suspicious to speak and give notes, as they will almost always be good reviews and high star marks. But what to do, right? Rock n' Roll can't go wrong! The only song I actually knew was the beautiful cover of Ain't That a Shame, which I had already heard by John Lennon's voice (and which until today I didn't know it was a Fats Domino's song). At the beginning of 'Surrender' (which is apparently their most popular song) he says "this song is the opening song to our latest album which was released this week" I felt like I was in a time machine, like I was actually there 46 years ago. By the way, great choice of place to do a show. The Japanese women are hysterical and scream at the top of their lungs the entire show! hahaha

A hit.

Pretty fun and energetic live album. Appreciate cheap trick a lil bit more 👍.

Great live rock

its ok ig ive heard a few of their songs like hello there because of rock band 2 other than that i think its good

This is great. I’m a sucker for a good live album, and this certainly is one!

For a live album, this was pretty good! It didn't overstay its welcome, unlike most live albums, and there wasn't too much talking in between songs. The recording quality was also pretty good. I was kind of dreading this album, but I really enjoyed it!

The sound quality wasn't all that great but Cheap Trick rocked! This album surprised me, I wasn't much of a Cheap Trick fan but I ended up liking this a lot better than I thought I would! I'd definitely listen to this again.

Classic album, fun rock n roll that it's captured well live. 3.5

Play the hits! With tremendous energy! The rest is ok. But c’mon, the hits are great!

first listen this was pretty good

Power pop, hard rock. Was not expecting to like this, never really been into cheap trick. But this live album had so much charm. The band played great, I liked the songs. I adore how they start and end concerts. The crowd was amazing. Man I bet it was fun to be there. Good time! 4/5

I have heard of this band. Must have been a great concert for it to be a legendary album. Wow. that was a great album.

Quite a fun listen, I've been pleasantly surprised with both live albums so far with how much the crowd noises add to the vibe rather than detracting from the music. These guys sound like they're having a blast

good album. i like cheap trick

Fun album. A live album that actually works compared to others on this. Some solid power pop here. They never topped this.

That was a fun lesson while I cleaned the house. But a little too classic rock for my regular rotation.

Yo pas pire. Ça bone-zone.

Already knew (and liked) Surrender and I Want You to Want Me. Also added Come On, Come On and Clock Strikes Ten to my favorites list. Enjoyed this album a lot!

I'm not a fan of live albums, but I thought this landed and held up really well. It's fun and I can feel the energy without it being distracting or sounding too much like a live album. Overall, very solid rock album that sounded great live.

What a killer show this would have been.

I ended up listening to this in a way that felt more academic than musical or experiential. I was driving and was thinking along the lines of "This is a good song. This is a song I would like" not "I like this song and am enjoying it right now" I felt very flat and wasn't enjoying or not enjoying the music. It was more like I was simply acknowledging it and filing it away as something that is well done, and fits my taste profile. I wasn't actually experiencing the feelings that I thought future me might experience on a later listen. This all sounds more dissasociative than it actually was. I've found I end up listening to a lot of albums on this list in the same way, but am just now putting the thought to writing. Good songs. Rippin guitar. Album cover: C+

I really love a great live record. I love it as much as the ladies of Tokyo love Cheap Trick. This album didn't have much crowd interaction, which has been the hallmark of the other stellar live albums we've had, but that didn't stop the full force of the Tokyo fandom coming through. Every song starts and ends with screaming women. It's a little like watching the Beatles Mania clips from when they went on their international tours. On to the music itself - I had never listened to Cheap Trick before, outside of hearing "I Want You to Want Me" on the radio. This is some great 70s rock, and I like it a lot. They have great energy, they shred, and the songs don't feel like they get old. I feel like I hear many aspects of their sound in more recent bands. My favorites were "Ain't That a Shame" and "Clock Strikes Ten". 8/10

I don't know about all the haters - I always loved this album when it came out! Especially, since prey I never heard of Cheap Trick. Rock gold from a band that is Still playing!

Holy shit what is it about this venue? >>> A number of famous acts have played at the Budokan. The Beatles were the first rock group to play there, in a series of concerts held between June 30 and July 2, 1966. ABBA ended their last tour and held their final live performance there in March 1980. Numerous acts have recorded live albums at the Budokan, including Blur, TVXQ, Bryan Adams, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Cheap Trick, Neil Young, Dream Theater, Duran Duran, Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Mariah Carey, Judas Priest, Paul McCartney, Asia, Ringo Starr, Journey, Deep Purple, Masayoshi Takanaka, and Michael Schenker Group. Ahh, I see now. >>> The venue is popular for recording live albums because it has good acoustics, is relatively large and Japanese audiences are known for being highly appreciative when appropriate but quiet during performances. Eric Clapton described the Tokyo audience as "almost overappreciative" in interviews promoting Just One Night (1980), his own live album recorded at the Budokan. It's pretty vanilla but I like this. It's hard not to tap your foot or sing along.

I don't know if this is truly the case, but I was really sold on the idea of this band just having a grand ol time on stage during this show. The songs are easy to bop to, catchy and fun, and the crowd is EATING. IT. UP. In a way, I feel like this is the most "wholesome" record on the list so far. It really does put a smile on my face, even if I'm normally against the idea of putting live albums on a list like this.

Good music.

Very good live album that made this band in the US. nobody knew who they were before this record came out. Most of the songs are just ok but Surrender became an instant classic.

This was a surprise! I didn't think I knew it then there were the two hits. I actually preferred the other more bluesy prog stuff rather than the more pop stuff (the well known songs). Thought it was fun though

Tiukka livelevy! Rockitykitystä hyvillä melodioilla ja soinnuilla. Parhaat: Come On Come On, I Want You to Want Me, Surrender

This live album has so much energy! I think Cheap Trick takes it to another level when there playing live.

Just a solid, no frills live album. Front to back bangers. The "Ain't That A Shame" cover was a very unique choice. Favorite tracks: "Come On, Come On", "I Want You To Want Me"

an experience.

A few good tunes in this that I'd heard before but didn't know who they belonged to. Not a huge fan of live albums though.

Great live album

Great live album, great performance, plus the beat version of I Want You to Want Me.

Should live albums be part of this? Feels a bit like a greatest hits compilation and maybe not a fair comparison? Regardless, this is everything you’d want in a rock show. Great energy and songs throughout. This version of I Want You to Want me is the tits. I love how Rick Nielsen is just dancing across the neck throughout the whole album. 3.75

This has some good songs and highlights, just that it isn’t really anything that special. Doesn’t mean it isn’t as good as it is.

Fun rock 'n' roll from a band that really shone live.

Pretty solid rock n' roll. The high pitched screaming between each song is obnoxious.

Great album by a great band.

I like Cheap Trick, and I think this is well done for a live album. Nevertheless, I’d rather listen to the studio recordings any day.

classic Album

GReat album, I love their music, but somehow missed this album

Took me by surprise. I always considered Cheap Trick to be boring dad rock, but this album as a really electric energy. Great fun!

Always a happy favorite.

they got the japanese women HOWLING and for good reason

I'm actually not usually a huge Cheap Trick fan but this seemed like a very solid live record. It sounded good and the vibe was 'up' the whole time. Great stuff.

Great album and showcases what must’ve been a great venue to play. Robin Zander is underrated. Actually the whole band is underrated. Great listen.

Great live album. Amazing energy and playing by everyone. Got better and better as it went

Fun catchy high-energy hard rock. Def one of the best live albums I’ve heard. Best song: Surrender

Nice Pop-Rock. This live album from technical point of view 2nd choice (too much shouting Japanese girls)

Me encanta, I want you to want me...

Usually eh about Cheap Trick (don’t love how much they sing about little girls) but this was a very fun live recording & has my favorite version of I Want You To Want Me on it

Pues me han gustado bastante. Hard rockpower pop. 1978.

Energy

Surprised to read the negative reviews! I love these songs—fun, high energy power pop. “I Want You To Want Me,” “Ain’t That A Shame,” and “Surrender” are all classics, and the enthusiasm of the crowd is incredible. The quality of the recording is lacking, but it makes up for it in the energy of the crowd.

Great concert!

Top notch power pop. *Cue screaming girls*

cheap trick… an intoxicating mix of rock, punk, and pop. they put on an excellent show, and this album is a great representation of them in a live setting. highlights: “big eyes”, “ain’t that a shame”, “i want you to want me”, “surrender”.

Never heard the whole album, just IWYTWM and the rest is just as upbeat and catchy as that one is. Good stuff.

this album was fine and i'll concede it's notable/historic, especially for a live album. this version of i want you to want me is really the most iconic version in my opinion. i liked the songs i knew already, plus clock strikes ten had some interesting instrumentation going on. everything else felt like filler, and the live part didn't really add much to the experience for me. quality was also not stellar, but it's live and in the 70s so i get that. favorites: hello there, i want you to want me, surrender, clock strikes ten

Not a fan of live albums, but definitely a band I'd explore more off the back of this.

I don't know why, but with this album, I always end up forgetting to write something about it. I've heard this three times by now. What can I say, I kinda like it. This one's on track with all the other live albums from this list I enjoyed. I like the feeling of the audience being there, it's kinda ecstatic. Like almost every song on this.

That crowd you can hear in the background certainly were mad about both the band and the performance. This sets the tone for what you are listening to, might be 70s pop rock but still very relatable and bit of fun.

This is a pretty cool album. Lots of good songs, but also cool instrumentation with plenty of solos, both guitars and drums.

Of what I've heard, it's possibly the album that benefits most from the live audience. Super fun

NO effing clue that Beastie Boys Sample, was cheap trick..... "this next one is the 1st song on our new album"... Hahahhaha That was a fun listen! I don't always love 'live' albums, but it was great

4/5 I liked it!

Iskreno nisam očekiva ništa, a dobija san težak banger od albuma... Najbolja pisma: Need your love

Might be one of the best live albums of all time, these guys were on the same level of the Beatles in Japan. The live version of I Want You to Want Me is 🔛🔝

Fun rock album! My favorites are "Want You to Want Me" and "Surrender". The rest of the album is just fine but these two songs shine through.

Hello There - 9/10 Come On, Come On - 8/10 Lookout - 8/10 Big Eyes - 8.5/10 Need Your Love - 8.5/10 Ain't That a Shame - 8/10 I Want You To Want Me - 10/10 Surrender - 9/10 Goodnight - 8/10 Clock Strikes Ten - 7/10 TOTAL - 84/100

Listening this album, and reading about it, you can understand why it's so high regarded. It's fun, well recorded, and it's a good way to listen to the band for the first time

I like it, goodbye is a gopd song.

Rock setentero. Un megahit. Un 4.

Pues me han gustado bastante. Hard rockpower pop. 1978.

Great music

Yes great songs of course and this album has a big reputation, but it is a live album. And as such, not so appropriate to rate: how to compare it with studio albums? The "Cheap Trick" and "In Color albums are 5 star. Let me just leave At Budokan at 4 star, my current rating average, but just due to the "live album issue".

Favorieten: I Want You to Want Me, Clock Strikes Ten

Pues mucho mejor de lo que esperaba: "Come on, come on" "I want you to want me","Goodnight", "Clock strikes ten" y por supuesto "Surrender".

Leuk (live)album!

Cheap Trick at Budokan is the first live album by American rock band Cheap Trick - their fourth album overall - and their best-selling record. This live album showcased the high energy of Cheap Trick's tours and rocketed the band into popularity after this album received lots of radio airplay. This rock album is critically acclaimed, being certified triple platinum in the US, quadruple platinum in Canada, and regarded as one of the best live albums and a classic in the power pop genre. Fun fact: the live recording on this album comes from Osaka, Japan instead of the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, because Osaka was a smaller venue which resulted in less screaming fans that would drown out the band (the fans in Osaka still tried though). Cheap Trick is well known for the world famous single on this album "I Want You to Want Me". At Budokan sent tidal waves through the music industry. At a time when disco and soft rock was popular, Cheap Trick paved the way for them and additional hard rock bands to be back on top of the charts in the upcoming decade of the 80's. It's a true underdog story, in which an American band that was performing mediocrely at home could travel abroad to Japan and become a viral sensation; this success then followed them back home to America and Canada. The album has since been inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress, and is still rated highly on best album lists to this day. Although the venue and fans on the live album can make it hard to hear the band's music at times, it's this energy that makes the album even better. You get to really feel like you're there in Japan, rocking out to some classic hard rock/power pop music. I'm so glad I got the chance to listen to this album and I hope many others do the same.

Damn. I'm pretty sure I still don't really like Cheap Trick (wrong generation), but I have to say that the live version of them is pretty good.

Most of it wasn't the most captivating for me, but there were 2-3 songs that were really good. 3.5

Very fun

There's a lot of tracks on here that you won't have known are by this band. This live album sounds fantastic. Would be a great gig.

Really great live performances

Cheap Trick should be a better and more important band than they are. I’m not quite sure what the issue is. They’re great musicians. Great songs. Yet there’s something missing. Surrender is a really great song. 3.5 rounded up.

I was chatting with my mate Dave Lewis a few years back about how I didn't really like live albums... except then I started listing off some of my favourite live albums, and I realised that, actually, I do quite like live albums. I don't mind the rough recording, or flubbed notes, or the crowd noise. What I really like is the sound of a band really tearing it up, playing with a real edge. And Cheap Trick At Budokan is a classic example of just that. This is exactly what power pop should sound like: melodic, tuneful, catchy, and (above all) rockin'. This record was something of a "guilty pleasure" amongst the grunge-leaning musos I hung around with int he early 90s, and Surrender would regularly pop up as the obligatory cover for a number of local pub bands around that time. I confess that I don't find the songs particularly memorable (except for Surrender, of course), but I LOVE the way they deliver this set. it's fast, loud and almost out of control. The tunes are catchy as hell, and you can rock out to it. This really is the archetype of everything you could possibly want in a live rock album. I should spin this more often.

Really a great live album! I think the sum is bigger than the whole

A powerhouse of a live album. This version of I Want You To Want Me is guitar rock perfection.

4/5 The full concert is much better thank the selected tracks for this album. Still classic.

This is really good, obviously Cheap Trick are great but live albums can be a problem for the best bands. This has enough punch and energy and just the right amount of over-indulgence to be memorable.

Liked it more than I thought I would.

Over-all a very good power pop album. The most important part is good, the songs. Except maybe the 2 long songs in the middle. Favorite song: Goodnight.

More Sabbath than I expected. Sounds like a hell of a show

I'm a very casual fan of Cheap Trick but this live album really showcases what made them special. Super high energy and equal parts catchy and noisy. So many bops.

This sounds like it would've been one helluva great concert to be at. I don't know half of these songs, but I'm completely in...

This Album is other worldly, historic and amazing.

As live albums go, this is pretty solid. A couple of real strong performances right in the middle there with I Want You To Want Me and Surrender. Doesn't out-stay its welcome. The little bit of backstory that the audio in this is not from Budokan but from a smaller show in Osaka is a nice little touch.

Had a lot of fun with this one. Good Lord did they pump the ever-loving-hell out of the crowd volume in the mix. It's practically louder than it would be at an actual concert, lol. But hey - why else would you bother with a live album if you're not going to at least make an earnest attempt to make it feel like an experience in some way? Anyway, this is all about "Surrender" for me. Never get tired of that song and it's especially fun here.

The band doesn’t really start cooking until two or three songs in, but an enthusiastic Japanese audience and increasingly loose and playful vamping make At Budokan one of Cheap Trick’s essential albums. Drummer Bun E. Carlos in particular is a delight to listen to.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Need your love, I want you to want me, Surrender

Only knew two tracks: I Want You to Want Me and Surrender. Interesting that I only knew the live versions, which both still hold up. The rest of the album is similarly rocking, with great energy and screaming fans.

Genre: Rock Review: I'd heard of Cheap Trick before, but never quite listened to any of their music. Reading up about them briefly before sinking into this album, I found that they were popular in Japan quite early on in their careers, and this popularity carried them to cult fame over the years in the US and the UK as well. This album, a live production recorded at the famous Budokan arena in Tokyo in the late '70s, was their biggest claim to fame. And it didn't disappoint. Review: 8/10

I recognize this as a classic must-have album I'd never fully experienced, so I was glad to listen today. Being new to it, I was a bit surprised that all through Side 1 it just sounded like generic 70s guitar rock to me, which has never really been my thing. Oh, then Side 2 got to the good stuff. Partially probably because I recognized so much more of it, but it also seemed more interesting and varied.

3.5 really

Damn, now I have FOMO about never seeing Cheap Trick live.

Such a cool surprise that the only song I knew from this album was not even close to the best one.

I don't really need to listen to this - I grew up on it. My uncle played it once, recording it onto cassette from the vinyl. I loved it... Later on I'd pick up a copy on yellow vinyl all for my own. Then I'd move to Japan and sing Surrender or I Want You To Want Me at karaoke; visit the budokan, but never actually be inside. This album wove it's way into the fabric of my life, and I can't imagine not knowing it.

Last two tracks stop this from being perfect, but it's still very good.

Haha. Ok

Pretty good. Solid buildup and pay off.

Me encantó haberlo conocido.

I can see why people held this album in high regards. Classic rock. I'm still in my rock fatigue stage though so I can't give it 5 stars.

Come to Finland plz

A rockin good time

Most of the album is exactly what it says: a classic rock band live in concert. It sounds a bit muffled, like a bootleg tape. But for some reason, “I Want You to Want Me” is crisp and clean with just the right amount of fans screaming peppered in. I remember my brothers listening to this a lot in the late 70s.

16th December 2022 Listened while removing wallpaper in the living room. Mum, dad and Seb round for chicken pie before going skiing. I love cheap trick, don’t know why but they’re just fun!

Full of energy, verging into heavy rock in places. Good couple of tunes

Directo con mucha intensidad. Rock clásico de finales de los 70. Alguna canción muy conocida. Para no parar de moverse

8/10. This was pretty enjoyable right off the bat, got even better towards the end, and didn't go on too long.

A fun listen, if lacking in variety. 7/10

Pretty seminal record. Maybe the only live album that I feel like is being worthy of being on this list. Cheap Trick rules and are underrated.

Rock and fucking roll man. 4/5

Seems weird to include a random live album (when none of the band's other albums are on the list) but wikipedia filled me in with the why, I guess. This was ok. Was hovering at a 3 but then those two big famous tracks came on, and "Clock Strikes Ten" nudged it up to a 4. Fave track - gotta be "Surrender", but I did enjoy the clock one too...

Captures the mood of a love performance well

Forgot how many good songs are in this album

Usually, I'm not a big fan of live albums, and I'm also unaware of "Cheap Trick." I heard about the band, I know a few songs, but this is all. And after listening to this album, I must say, "wow." Their energy is contagious even in a record. I'd love to have the opportunity to watch a real live presentation of this band after this album.

The full concert is great, the original edit of the live concert is good but feels incomplete…. 4/5

J’aime beaucoup cet album.

Don’t often listen to live albums but it’s always a nice change. Good songs, would probably listen again!

Some hit/recognisable songs, pretty decent album, would listen again

Solid live album

Classic! One of the greatest live albums of all time.

Rock setentero. Un megahit. Un 4.

4.5 "This next one is the first song on our new album. It just came out this week, and the song is called... Surrender." One of my most-spun vinyl records, and one of the greatest live albums ever recorded (though Nirvana's MTV Unplugged holds the crown). Cheap Trick was the definition of being "big in Japan", and the way the audience reacts to the band's every note is the stuff musicians dream of. This album also undoubtedly holds what is the definitive edition of I Want You to Want Me - hearing the studio recording without the echoing screams of Japanese fans just feels so hollow and lifeless. To be honest, I actually haven't heard the studio recordings of most of the tracks on this album, and I'm not sure I want to... not sure they could live up to the energy levels at Budokan. Blast from front to back. Favorite songs: I Want You to Want Me, Surrender, Hello There, Come On, Come On, Lookout, Need Your Love

Good rock not hard rock tho just fun rock.

Fun and enjoyable album that feels more like pop-rock than anything else. It does lack a bit of energy for a live performance but it was a nice listen.

Don't love live albums but this was good inspite of that

I don’t know why I never got big into Cheap Trick. They consistently bring it live. I will say I like the whole and outro being songs. That is not done much anymore. Maybe it’s that the only song people know by them is “I Want You To Want Me.” And the crowd sounds like it was just a bunch of teenage girls, which is… creepy. Were they sex symbols back in the day? I really don’t know. “Surrender” keeps getting stuck in my head. Still a good song. Now it’s stuck in yours. You’re welcome.

I used to say that Cheap Trick's I Want You to Want Me is the only song whose live recorded version is better than the studio version. Still love that live version (the crowd chants ebb and flow with the music), don't know if the rest of this live album always captures the same essence. It's not just about screaming fans, it's about fans being in rhythm with a band that is in full control of its delivery. The back half of the album approaches that - Clock Strikes Ten is a great encore performance (fully on fire by then) and the whole sequence from I Want You to Want Me to Surrender to Goodnight is humming. But you can hear the difference between that closer and its opener companion Hello There, where the latter is just a bit fuzzy and off (the recorded version of Hello There really rocks). I think it improves with each song but even by the time they hit Big Eyes it's still a bit labored. They nail it at Need Your Love - the fans are barely noticeable until two-thirds through but their quality of play for almost 9 minutes is awesome. They hit the pinnacle there and hold it for the rest of the concert/album. Impressive. So all in all a pretty darn good (live) album, and cool that its energy launched their career worldwide.

Those Japanese people really know how to bring the energy to a concert. Great music too from the boys in the band

Excellent live album. Really great energy all throughout.

I had no idea Cheap Trick were good. The guitar tone is the hero of this album. I'm not sure what I would think about the rest of it with that component missing, but I don't have to, because it's there, and it's spectacular.

That was a pretty fun album overall. Saved a few songs.

One of the cleanest and vibrant live recordings…this band is perfectly balanced with the roar of the crowd.

Awesome show, the fans were hot for it

Nothing against Cheap Trick, but 38 live tracks is a lot of Cheap Trick.

The only way to listen to "I want you to want me", a great live album and one of my favourite Cheap Trick tunes of all time Surrender...but I still prefer the record version of that one.

I was a bit skeptical when I saw that this was a live album, but this was pretty great! Good sound quality, and literally every single song was a banger. Definitely the most fun listening experience I've had so far!

Great cover of Ain’t that a Shame. I Want You To Want Me is a super classic. Great live album overall

I don't particularly care for live albums; however, Cheap Trick has some really well known songs and they are on this album. It was relatively short. I would prefer the non-live album versions but still was good.

Great live album. Fun to listen to and has the huge hit, "I Want You to Want Me" + "Surrender". 8/10

It rocks along just nicely and sounds a lot of fun

I mean, Want You to Want Me and Surrender are in fact, both bangers.

Love a good live album. Another group I was aware of through their hits with radio play but hadn't heard any of their other music until now

I want you to want to listen to this album because it kicks ass. Love the live vibe of At Budokan, screaming fans and loud music. This album seems to bridge the gap between classic rock and 80's hair bands. Some great stuff on this that often gets overlooked. For everyone that doesn't think there's anything worth listening to between Zeppelin and Halen, please check out this album.

Enjoyed it. Probably a bit better than most so 4*

Good fun, actually. I'm sure there are other albums that need hearing more, though.

A tight rock and roll set played in front of a jubilant Japanese audience. The break between each track reveals an almost beatlemania-esqe fervor amongst the crowd, which had to have been a thrill for the band as well! I feel like the energy just exploded on 'Come On, Come On', relented a bit during 'Need Your Love', and then just hard charged all the way through to the 'Clock Strikes Ten' encore. Also, the 'Hello There' and 'Goodnight' bookend tracks on the performance were a nice touch of showmanship. All told, this had to have been an epic show and is translated fantastically to recording, which is saying a lot for a live performance. Bonus points for 'Surrender' starting off with a sound bite that was sampled by the Beastie Boys.

imagine casually recording one of your live shows and it being considered one of the greatest albums of all time 💀 good work

There are some classic live renditions on here.

It wasnt my vibe. But I do appreciate the soul in it.

So many memories!

A band that can sound better live than on the albums is a rare treat. Cheap Trick is one of those bands. Great songs but it was even better hearing them live.

The best and most iconic recording of “I Want You to Want Me” ever. I could do without the screaming fan girls but Cheap Trick live is a treasure.

Surprised they put a live album on here, but after listening I know why. These guys are very good live, and I loved the whole set.

Pounding drums, huge guitars. Power pop in all its glory. A classic.

Rrrrrrrrrrrrock! \m/

This roolz way harder than it should

Classic!!

Pure power pop. Only a handful of songs are that memorable or engaging. The screaming crowd is half the story ... almost like an instrument ... Robin Z seems to address it slowly and loudly, like a bad, monolingual tourist. So tight and energetic, but oh so bubble-gummy.

Tracks 7 & 8 are close to legend status.

This was a fun live album, particularly a great run of tunes from the 9 minute jam then ain't it a shame, want you to want me, and what sounded like their first time playing Surrender as they announced it was going to be on their new album. That was a great rendition of that tune, and the concert as a whole had great energy to it. I had a big classic rock phase and still enjoy it, but Cheap Trick wasn't a band I ever paid much attention to, but this makes it evident they were a fantastic live band.

It's great fun. That's all the summary you need. Getting into a little more depth, here we have a live album showcasing a band about to break through (in America; Japan caught onto the Cheap Trick gambit early on), and here we have a band relishing a moment of glory they'd assumed was fleeting. Also, the best of these songs are essentially indestructible, so we have a warm, melodic, upbeat band enjoying playing warm, melodic, upbeat rock. The middle sags slightly, presumably the time when you went to the bar or for a piss, but otherwise this album is pretty irresistible.

Have you ever bothered listening to the original studio version of "I Want You To Want Me"? It's completely different than the one on this album, which thankfully for all of our sakes became the gold standard. But that original version shot all the way to number one in Japan (it didn't even chart in America) and was the reason for this album's existence. But again, it's awful, capturing none of the magic that's evident on the live version that became a classic rock staple. The live version is such an improvement on the studio version that it was released as a single in America and immediately became Cheap Trick's biggest hit, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. That shit seemingly happened all the time in the '70's (see: Kiss with "Rock & Roll All Nite", Peter Frampton and a number of his songs). Apparently the studio just stifled too many bands back then. Or maybe the old saying is true: Recording in the studio is masturbation, and playing live is having sex. Of course now "I Want You To Want Me" has become so ubiquitous to the point where I never want to hear it again. But "Surrender", on the other hand, is a jam I can't get enough of. The live version here is similar to the studio version that was released around the same time. "Surrender" is a piece of power pop perfection no matter how you slice it (although I prefer the studio version over the live one, but maybe that's because the Budokan crowd didn't sound very excited at the thought of Robin Zander's parents making out with Kiss records on the turntable). I can't help but be disappointed that Tim Burton didn't use "Big Eyes" as the theme song for his movie of the same name. A montage of Christoph Waltz selling paintings of people with big eyes to the sounds of Cheap Trick sounds like a missed opportunity if there ever was one.

Classic rook album, was a good shout

I am a believer that music is meant to be heard live, but live albums rarely capture the experience. This album really takes off during Need Your Love and maintains that energy. 4/5

Hard rock live album. I usually stick to studio albums but Cheap Trick have great energy live and the crowd is rocking. Some classic tracks in this album that I've heard of before. I enjoyed the second half more. Favorite tracks: Big Eyes, Ain't That A Shame, I Want You To Want Me, Surrender

This was not bad at all… didn’t know what to expect, but there were some decent tunes. May explore further.

I don't really need a ton of this kind of music in my life but I have to give this extra points for being such an iconic live album. I think it's rare to really capture that exceptional live show magic, particularly for a big arena show.

I’ve never been a huge fan of live albums, with some exceptions, but this was a perfectly fine one. My favorite song of cheap tricks was on here and there were a couple other good ones. Fav songs: ain’t that a shame, I want you to want me, surrender

"Hello There" and "Goodnight" are kind of genius intro/outro songs -"Come On, Come On" gets into a nice fast groove -"Ain't That A Shame" has some great guitar stuff in it. I quite like the very fast paced call-and-response section -The drummer is great throughout the album -I've definitely heard "I Want You To Want Me" and "Surrender" before like on the radio or something -Very solid live album

I liked "Surrender" and "Clock Strikes Ten".

Great album, great energy, fun to listen to. 4 stars.

Good ol' fashioned straight forward American Rock n' Roll. I've always been a off handed fan of Cheap Trick. Liked their radio hits. Never owned an album. Also, never been a fan of live recordings. The amazing thing about this is I only know two songs on this album but I could listen to it. A lot. I'm not blown away by the songs so much as the performance. They know how to put on a concert. They know how to drive it. It's all straight forward and fairly elementary but they do it on an expert level. Would love to see them live. As they say, they use every cheap trick in the book, but it works. It just works.

On opening, this sounds like a by-the-numbers hard rock album with nothing to offer. But by the end, you really get caught up in the infectious enthusiasm, the reaction of the crowd and the sheer unabashed joy the band spark as they do what they do best - we are here to rock. No pretence, no artifice, no hidden meaning - just enjoy.

Yes!! After two days of dark albums, I really needed the generator to send me something joyful. What can I say, hello there, welcome to the best live album ever! At Budokan captures Cheap Trick in a way that eludes their studio albums. Top notch '70s rock with sweet hooky melodies, rough edges and all. It's an album that fully rocks, still with all the brightness and warmth of the best power pop. "I Want You to Want Me" is the obvious star here, but all of the songs are a blast to listen to. Fave songs: Come On, Come On; I Want You to Want Me; Ain't That a Shame.

Decent old school rock

Excellent.

I want you to want me Surrender Cooles Album, wusste nicht, dass die beiden Songs von Cheap Trick sind

Such a fun live album there’s so much energy!! Also I didn’t know a lot of these songs (which I already love) are Cheap Trick!

While their records were entertaining and full of skillful pop, it wasn't until At Budokan that Cheap Trick's vision truly gelled. Many of these songs, like "I Want You to Want Me" and "Big Eyes," were pleasant in their original form, but seemed more like sketches compared to the roaring versions on this album. With their ear-shatteringly loud guitars and sweet melodies, Cheap Trick unwittingly paved the way for much of the hard rock of the next decade, as well as a surprising amount of alternative rock of the 1990s, and it was At Budokan that captured the band in all of its power.

Generous for a live album of Glammy prog but need your love is intriguing

Another classic. It was nice to do a deep dive into some of the lesser known tracks on here. I realized I tend to only listen to 3 or 4 tracks when I put this on. I will have to let it ride out now

Good things: Loved that they had a "Hello" opener song and a closer "Goodbye" song. Good crowd interaction having people clap on "I Want You To Want Me", which is a really good song. Rocking out to Big Ben is a sick encore. Good rock n roll sound like Peter Frampton but a bit less sappy and a little more edgy. Still quite radio-friendly music to be honest, but it all sounds balanced. Bad things: "Lookout" and "Need Your Love" are quite forgettable songs (ignoring the savage guitar solos). Very close to giving it a 5.

It’s some classic pop-rock and it’s damn good. They are also all good musicians especially the lead guitarist as showcased on Ain’t That a Shame. The solos are good and the band is really tight. It’s not deep or anything but it’s full of exciting upbeat bangers and that’s sometimes just what you need. Favorite songs: Come On, Come On; Big Eyes, Need Your Love, Ain’t That a Shame, I Want You to Want Me, Surrender Decent 8/10

Great fun. V pleased to have discovered these guys

Really enjoyed this. Sounds of so many bands I like and more proof that Oasis were rip off merchants.

Biiseistä jäi mieleen Need Your Love, Surrender ja Clock Strikes Ten.

Was a little surprised to see a live album, especially as there doesn't seem to be anything particularly unique about the performance, but I get it was an important release for the band and I did really enjoy it. Great energy and good songs! Sound like a fun live band. 8/10

A lot of fun and some surprises at the songs I knew. Solid 4!

very good album but not a big fan of the last song or the fact that it is all live. very good though

Never heard of Cheap Trick before and have no idea what they sound like on a studio record, but this live album has great energy and seems to really capture the performance. A very engaging and enjoyable listen despite not knowing any of the songs. I do like the catchy rock songs, but am not really motivated to seek out the studio versions. I usually find live albums fall a bit flat, but I couldn't fault this recording or performance at all.

nice ol rock

Awesome quality for a live album that old, plus Cheap Trick is a great band

Hard rock writ large, replete with screaming female fans reminiscent of Beatlemania. One of the better live rock albums I've heard.

Quite liked this, they've got some classics too

Good time jams, solid classic rock, good atmosphere

Peppy fun stuff

Good fun 70's rock. I bet this show was a blast.

Always tough starting with a live album, but liked this one. "I want you to want me" and "Surrender" are probably the two biggest hits on this one!

I have always had a soft spot for Cheap Trick, one of my first concerts. An awesome live album to make you feel right in the arm-waving crowd with great pop rock anthems. The 8 min Need Your Love take has great riffs and the live I Want You to Want me can't get any more sing-along-able.

awesome

Över förväntan

Another live album. Captures the band. Likely won’t listen to it again.

This recording sounds like a bootleg. Some great songs on here but the sound quality is ass.

First of all as I have said before, I am not a big fan of Live albums being on this list. I have accepted the ones that have some kind of historical significance. I don't feel Cheap Trick at Budokan is a historically significant album, its just their biggest selling album. The funny thing while listening, is as I have heard this version of "I Want You To Want Me" a million times. I started thinking, have I ever heard the studio version? So I listened to that track afterwards and its like night and day! I can see why we all remember the Live version and the studio version is forgotten.

At Budokan - Cheap Trick ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I recognize that this album has the most famous version of I Want You to Want Me. And also the intro to Surrender that was famously sampled by the Beastie Boys. But as a collection, I don’t see what exactly pushes this good but not great live collection into legendary status. It does sound authentic and not over produced or polished, but otherwise it’s just fine and not much more.

Good songs are good

Yeah, good

Surrender is special because it's one of the opening tracks to Guitar Hero 2, one of the games that had me start actually enjoying music. And I Want You to Want Me is an awesome song. But the rest of this album is pretty mid and I think it's largely held back by being live. The production sound is lower, energy is ok, but I think I would have enjoyed it a bit more of it were crisper. Nothing particularly striking in the music besides the two hits for me.

This is like Friday night at the roller rink. You and your friends are there, looking fly and skating some sharp trails through the crowds. You feel cool, almost to the point that you are intimidating the others at the rink. There is a children’s birthday party there though, and they are distractingly loud throughout the night.

Some nice hits played live.

maybe my ears are broken but I struggle to hear this clearly. probably pretty good though

That was ok but why on earth is the album here on the list?

Hay algunas muy buenas

Was really quite unremarkable for me until I suddenly started recognizing everything

It’s pop rock but that’s ok. It’s ok to have fun with rock and roll.

#967. Every time I hear Cheap Trick, I think of the scene from Devil's Rejects where Brian Posehn is wearing a Cheap Trick shirt talking about being a rodeo clown. 3/5: you know I could've been on that pit crew down in North Carolina

A really good live show that I have never heard before today. Nice to hear the audience going crazy over every song. Several big hits performed flawlessly in addition to many other less popular songs. A little bit of crowd interaction but nothing distracting. It's a really good live album.

I'd rather be there than listen to this. Sounds like a fun gig. Not the best band, best songs or sound quality, but I'd have a blast if I was there.

It’s ok for what it is, but is it one of the best 1001 albums ever made? No. Is there anything special or unique that would make it be an album you need to hear before you die? Nope.

I firmly believe that live albums are for the folks who went. 3/5

Bäst är Surrender, Need your love, I want you to want me

Washing machine fixing album.

it's nothing i haven't heard before but that doesn't mean it's bad. i like it! because it's my taste! #pureofheart fave track: big eyes

It seems odd to have a live/best-of album by a (then) obscure American band performing in front of thousands of screaming Japanese fans to be the lone Cheap Trick selection for this project, but since this was also their most popular and best-selling album of their entire career, I guess it also makes sense. I didn't recognize all that much from the album except their big hits "I want you to want me" and "Surrender" (and maybe their nice cover of Fats Domino's "Ain't that a shame"), and I was pretty underwhelmed by both their setlist and the production quality, but it certainly sounded like they and their fans enjoyed the show. Funny too to read that the album is actually from a show in Osaka rather than at Tokyo's much larger Bodukan theater; I can't imagine how bad the Bodukan tapes must have sounded like to make them choose what seems like a pretty bad recording. But either way, it's nice to see that their relentless touring schedule and work ethic paid off, first in Japan and then in the US, and largely continues to this day.

drum-forward arena rock--Surrender is the stand out track.

It's good, but I'm not a fan of live albums in general.

a lot of energy but live albums without knowing much from a band never hit that much

Usually a live album gets hyped up because of the raw energy that a live performance puts off. This was dull and muffled. Sounded like sitting outside of the venue and listening to the noise that escaped out the door when it opened. All that to say, it's still a fun listen.

High energy, great performances on all instruments, catchy songs.

Soft rock played well in the Budokan stadium. Tuneful enough, but not enough to get the blood racing. Tell that to the hordes of Japanese chicks having multiple orgasmas and/or being ritually disembowelled (judging by the hysteria of the screams).

An aggressively middling collection of songs elevated by live energy, like giving flavour to white bread with condiments but forgetting the ingredients to make it a sandwich.

Well here we got a little live record of classic rock. Its exactly that and not anything more. Im not a huge cheap trick guy to be fair. So I really didnt get thay much out of this. Japan really loves that 70s rock stuff, thats for sure. Ive had a couple of these types of live record now. Im not sure why but they show up. They are real loud between tracks. Its nice to hear. But the music itself is pretty no frills. Nothing too far outside what they put in the official recording. At least it doesnt feel like it. All the songs are 3 to 5 minutes long and it feels right tome wise. Wrll im getting too deep into the minutiae at this point and I wouldn't say thats all that helpful or insightful but I liked it well enough but I dodnt love it in any way either. Listen if your a big cheap trick person but I dont think its necessary if you are not

When they play it live, they play it LOUD.
