Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Very low production quality, but I love the level of creativity by a bunch of young rockin dudes.
Rubbish
Loved how atmospheric it was in between the bursts of loud music, I feel compelled to revisit this.
Difficult…but good…
So strange… I truly enjoyed it but it also put me to sleep.
Obscure, but interesting guitar riffs, tempo changes and somehow moving. Very interesting style. (7/10) Favorite Tracks: Don Aman, Washer
I liked it, feels a little pretentious at points with their monologues, but I really like the instrumentals and the overall feel.
incredible!! super heavy and unique- love the quiet speaking voice over the foreboding guitars.
Surprisingly excellent. Bit of radiohead and chroma key feel. Definitely will listen again.
Love this record.
Sehr nett, bisserl krachte
Quite enjoyable.
Bängeri Jännä rock/grunge/metal? Kova feel
So this is kind of unexpected. I don’t hate it. It’s not at all what I expected. It’s sort of a whole mood type of album.
I prefer this to Velvet Underground
Dark, moving, vocal. I love their easy but powerfull style, it's really well put together
They are good. Too short of an album!
A pleasant surprise!
pree good
Amazing album, not too short so you should definitely give this a listen
Yo, I quite enjoyed this. I don't know if I'd listen to this when I'm not working, but it was interesting.
This thing moves lumberingly, but its reputation of coldness seems undeserved. So it's not particularly glacial after all. The dynamic contrasts are what keeps the ear engaged. Otherwise there's so much unfolding here that depths are promised. What is deserved is the assertion that nothing since has sounded quite like this.
interesting
ok nije me toliko tangirao
Have always felt like I should like this album, but it's never really clicked. Don't dislike it, just don't particularly love it. Maybe it will grow on me.
그냥 평범한 느낌이었다.
not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue
Different song structures cool, NIN
I didn't know there could be a more stream-of-consciousness artist than Bob Dylan, but in comes Slint. I actually liked the album; it's very mellow and chill. The lyrics aren't deep or anything, and it really feels like they just started a whole jam session by talking about random stuff and goofing off on their instruments. But it works. Kind of reminds me of Morphine.
Good album. Not my fav but it pioneered a genre that i adore so I can't deny that.
Moi j'ai plutôt bien aimé? Pas compris le commentaire d'aurélia
Day 896. She was running out of things to say about mediocre albums that are good enough for a 3…but here goes: I guess this was fine. It piqued my interest enough to not be a 2.
Kind of... uninteresting? I dunno, didn't do a whole lot for me.
An exercise in restraint. I half-expected them to apologize.. It's all quiet tension and release, no grandstanding. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Breadcrumb Trail - Washer - Good Morning, Captain

Upon first listen, I wasn’t keen. The music for me is great, very much something I’d casually listen to. However, the talking throughout songs is something that i’m not a fan of. Last 2 songs on the album are the best on there
I enjoyed this one by the end but it took a while to get into it. I could see it growing on me with a few more listens and potentially going up another star. Top Track - Good Morning, Captain
How beige
Surprised myself by not totally hating this
Tbis wasnt so bad
very cool long songs but great vibe honestly i really like it, just wish it was broken into smaller chunks/with transitions, but i guess that wouldn't make sense. just not made for streaming. lovely album
Enjoyed it, but in a way I’m not proud of.
The grunge in the beginning can get quite annoying. The later instrumental part was nicer
Solid math rock
Was annoyed at first, but Iwas a little impatient with the songs. Probably all give it a second chance in the future.
Mellower Nirvana
The songs sounds promising in their weird structures and build ups. But ultimately it doesnt deliver on what I would expect. Not very bad, but just not for me. Maybe there is something deeper to be found on repeat listens, but I probably will never do that.
I don't think the world was ready for Spiderland.
This album's atmosphere is unmatched. It's so cool, and unlike anything I've ever heard before. A really cool album, but idk Would give 3.5 stars, but I won't give 4 because that messes with my system. Genuinely a really cool album, and such a unique experience. Really interesting, and I recommend everyone give it a chance.
I know of it by reputation, never listened until now. Feels like some 90s alt rock. The odd rhythms and vocals set it apart, but they feel detached and don’t really add anything for me.
This is the kind of music I like, but nothing especially grabbed me. I've seen this album cover on so many "best of" lists; I expected more from it.
Solid
Unfortunately I fuck with this midwestern classic. The guitar tones are probably the most appealing part to me. “Breadcrumb Trail” always sounds like a deconstructed Hum track to me, which is to say I have a soft spot for its sound. The mumbly, descriptive spoken word lyrics that jump into singy-screamy stanzas. It’s a peculiar musical phenomena that worked so well. This albums reputation precedes itself, and it lives up to that spooky scary reputation the further you get into the tracklisting. Maybe the one exception is “Washer”, which returns to a more melodic composition. Everything else gets screechier, the stories get more whispery in tone. Is this my favorite type of thing to casually listen to? No not at all. As mentioned before, I like my midwestern-emo-leaning stuff to come from Hum. But I hear the many aspects which make Spiderland a cult classic. Respectable strong 3/5, could be higher if I was a bit less concerned with how this sounds compared to my casual listening preferences. A bit odd to give such a divisive album a middling score but it’s all I got
Cool 90’s album but started to blend together in the end to new.
Was an interesting couple of listens. I still don’t really know what to think of it. My general impression is that they made this record for themselves and intended to please no one. I respect that.
Love the guitars on this. Love the whole production. This album's become legendary so not much more I feel the need to add. I'll say that I don't totally loooove the vocals, like a lot of the talk or almost whispered vocals don't really do a whole lot for me. But I like the screaming! The music is what really carries this album for me.
Weird, but the good kind of weird.
Well that was interesting. I'm certainly not surprised by what seems to be a W shaped rating curve, seems like an album you'd love, hate or not feel one way or the other about. I fall into the latter camp, however there is certainly something here- it definitely achieves the desired atmosphere, it has payoff for me which is something people here lament the lack of, and it probably is influential but I'll defer to everyone else on that. Other than that its weirdness in the time signatures and the tones used make it feel like walking on a tightrope between genius and trash much like most indie math rock bands you'll probably find at your local indie dive bar on a weekday. Despite the grade I feel I'll be mulling over the record more in the coming weeks because it did leave an impression on me.
Bastante curioso como pieza histórica, como álbum está guapo, ero tampoco me ha vuelto loco
Bleak, slow, and angry. The album sets a mood for being angsty in the suburbs.
For the most part, I like post-rock. I like the way they do melodies. I can even enjoy when the vocals are mostly spoken word. The caveat there is the mixing needs to be done such that I can actually hear the spoken words. As it is, I wanted to like this so much more than I did. But I couldn't absorb the narrative because I couldn't hear it. I can see how this album was definitely ahead of its time though. And I did like the music.
Musically they're doing interesting post-rock stuff with a lot of irregular rhythms and arrangements but it is a bit of a difficult listen. Lots of the lyrics are spoken words. At times it sounds like a long Smashing Pumpkins instrumental.
'I said goodbye to the ground.' Better than I remember it being, but all that talking is a real drag & a panic that I can do w/o. Renowned for their weird, punishing time signatures, I don't care for those b/c I honestly don't really notice them: if they upset musical convention, good for them, or not, it's the same to me either way. What I hear most of all are McMahan's vocals, which are in the rare instance urgent & explosive, especially in the finality - 'I miss you / I miss you / Ah, I miss you / I miss you' - but are usually misery manifest in whispers & bad poetry. 'He decided to piss / But he couldn't.' I feel I relate to the fuckers in the gorge on the cover, I do, but I also want to tell them, 'hey guys, lighten up, get a sense of humor, or just a sense at all.'
this was cool, knowing they're from Louisville and they're just a group of friends making music. the album cover is super cute, if it's of them. I don't actually know. they have nothing on The Korean Americans tho.
I like the music, but the accent on the vocal is fairly repellant.
Quite liked "Good Morning, Captain as had more life". Other than that, a generally higher standard of post-punk.
This sounds like a rough draft of a tool album. Like the guys from Tool had a free hour and decided to lay down some concepts for a future recording. Spoken ideas that would get fleshed out into real lyrics and vocals later. Simple, droning bass and guitar to try some chord changes, and placeholder burts of loud guitar. And no real drumming to speak of, just some time keeping. Probably would be an amazing album if they finished it.
I remember reading something about this album and how the band broke up before this album even came out. It's a shame because they have a pretty good sound for how young and inexperienced they were. Favorite track: Washer
I didn't like the other "math rock" album on the list, so I was ready not to like this. However there were parts of this that were good. No so keen on the screaming but the spoken word lyrics seemed to work for me. I think I could see where the influences followed from here which I guess is why it's on the list. I was ready not to like it but it did enough. I saw another comment that said listened to it twice and still not sure if they liked it. I feel a bit the same way.
Surprisingly liked this!!
*Very grunge and early 90s influenced *Lacked energy to get more than a 3
Spiderland is widely regarded as foundational to the 1990s post-rock and math rock movements, and is cited by critics as a milestone of indie and experimental rock, inspiring a myriad of subsequent artists. Pour ma part, j'étais bolette durant cette écoute, j'ai pas haï le mood, mais j'ai pas capoté non plus.
Having attempted to get into Spiderland a few times over the years, I remain confused by the album's cult classic status, even though the guitars sound very cool
I can see the vision but I just don't think it's fully cooked. It wasn't bad but it isn't going into my rotation
90’s Alternative Rock ⭐️Washer
It was super interesting reading about Slint, this album, and it's influence on math rock and post-rock. Glad I listened, but not sure I actually enjoyed listening?
This was alright, pretty doomy and screechy guitars that were ok, but I really dislike spoken-word. I'm going with a 3
Another album i wish I had heard in my teens Very good, very experimental. Cool and good Good and cool
Not bad- I *would* listen again but I probably won't go out of my way to. Vocals aren't particularly strong but that's fine
I find it hard to rate this album. On one hand it's interesting and unlike most other things I've heard on this list. On the other hand, it's kind of boring.
I felt kinda bored during some parts but also excited and uplifted during other parts, for me that’s the perfect definition of a 3 star album.
I'll be honest, it wasn't my cup of tea, but I could certainly hear ideas that would inspire bands inside and outside the indie rock scene. I certainly a lot more whisper rock after this record than before it. Maybe that was a result of the music technology equipment advancing, and maybe it was because of influences like Spiderland. Either way, the lyrical structure, while difficult to discern without reading the lyrics seemed to tell a more complete concept album narrative than most concept albums do. Clearly the character, dissatisfied, depressed, and eventually dissociated leaps to their death in the Utica Quarry and remains there as a haunted spirit for the rest of time trapped in the very existence that the protagonist was trying to escape. I'm convinced that is why the band members are in the quarry on the album cover and why they tacked the 15 minute recording of the "Utica Quarry, Nighttime" live recording on to the end of the album in recent releases. A creepy risk that worked for the band.
I've heard this record once or twice before. And there's a reason why I've only heard it once or twice. It's not great. The thing that kills me about Spiderland is that I really want to like it. 90's alternative/indie rock is kind of my preferred genre. This falls into that camp, for sure. It has some of those Archers of Loaf-style noise rock elements that I adore. But it's mostly like listening to someone mumble spoken word poetry while a concert is going on in the foreground. It's not even mixed particularly well...Slint's Spiderland feels like an exercise in self-frustration for me. It seems like the guys from Slint are having fun, and I appreciate the effort with their creative approach to songwriting. But, I'm not sure how it wound up on this list (particularly in a project that somehow features no Archers of Loaf, at least as far as I'm aware). I don't hate the record, but I don't like it either, and I doubt that I'll ever circle back here. 5.5/10
Nice and pleasant but nothing and outstanding and quite forgettable
They sound dark and real. Kinda reminds me of Deftones (kinda). Don't know how this album is one of the GOATS but it sounded cool 😎
opzich wel nog creatief, ni echt iets waar ik elke dag naar zou luisteren tho 2.5
Thoughts before listening: One of the most hyped indie rock albums of the 90s which should mean this is right in my wheelhouse. I never owned this album, but I have tried to listen a few times with Spotify...and it doesn't really do much for me. I don't know, maybe this will be the listen that changes my mind. Review: Okay so this is a post-rock album with lots of heavy textures, odd time signatures, abrupt shifts in melody, and a focus on music over vocals. In fact, most of the vocals are low in the mix and more spoken than sung. I can certainly see where this was likely a big influence on bands like the Deftones and probably even instrumental bands like Explosions in the Sky. This album can be a bit frustrating to be honest, with songs seemingly working toward a satisfying peak but then getting rip chorded before that happens. All in all, its fine. I wouldn't necessarily put it up with the indie rock albums its frequently sits next to in best album lists (i.e. Slanted and Enchanted), but I do appreciate that a lot of music I like was influenced by these guys. 3-stars
I have never heard of this band before, nor any of these songs. This was interesting. The whole time I'm listening to this I kept thinking that some of this sometimes reminds me of Modest Mouse and also Smashing Pumpkins. I looked it up - apparently there is no influence in either direction with either of these other bands. I hear some Dinosaur Jr in there too - and apparently they were influenced by Slint. I don't love the spoken word stuff as much but I do like the music on pretty much all of this. I ended up liking 3 out of the 6 songs - the last 3 songs on the album which are: "Washer", "For Dinner" (instrumental), and "Good Morning, Captain". Liked songs on Spotify: 3/6 Rating: 3/5
6.5/10
Ugh Spiderland. I've tried to listen to this many times over the years and it has never left an impression. This time around I listened maybe 5 or 6 times in the past two days, and while I still think it's impact is overblown (it essentially seems to mix the subtlety of Talk Talk with the quiet/loud elements of grunge), I do have more appreciation for a few moments, including parts of Good Morning, Captain. 3.4/5 -> 3/5
Overlooked alt rock
Never heard of these before. Not really a fan of 90s alt or grunge but I enjoyed this. It was discordant, abrasive and interesting. Even the spoken word couldn’t turn me off it completely. Felt slightly like doom metal but with less distortion. Strong 3.
Started badly, thought it was meandering art rock nonsense. Then For Dinner... Happened and I changed entirely. Stand out song, rest fine.
Love me some big-ass indie guitar overload, but I also like melodies and stuff, so while there is a lot of promise here, sorry I just don't hear a hit.
Moody, cool, hard to recommend a single track with their length but it flows well as a project
This was an alright album. It felt like a slower, moodier version of Pixies. The sound was cool, but not immediate. It's not a straight-forward sound but more experimental, but definitely feels like it was made in early 90s. I'd listen again at some point but not right now.
Cool!
pretty cool
That's some big guitar sounds at times which I like. Feels like a precursor of Hum, but not so much in the way of tuneage.
Wow... I've never really listened to Slint before but I can hear the threads of so many bands that came after them. This album isn't something that I'll seek out in the future, but I liked it and can appreciate it for being such an influence. - Heard before? No. - Will I listen again? Probably not. - Does it inspire me to listen to more of this artist? Not really.
interestingly good
It was so close, I liked the grunge feel to it, the music, but then it was the talking ... it made it kind weird.
I liked this well enough, but it mostly felt like a rough draft of other stuff I like more.
This was good! I see how this band/sound/record has probably influenced a lot of groups I listen to these days (Squid comes to mind first). I'll be honest, I tuned out a little while working and it played the entire extended special edition of the album, and I'm not really sure where it began or ended. But it was engaging enough that I didn't even notice!
Heel chille rock, maar toch wel een hard kantje. Like it 3,5/5
Talky lyrics are not great but this is OK. Avg rating.
Pretty cool indie album. Definitely captures the essence of that genre at that time. Gotta actively listen to this one to appreciate it.
***An ok album
I expected not to like Spiderland after seeing some of the reviews and hearing the first track, but I actually didn’t mind it! “Washer” is legitimately a great song and it’s also the longest track here, so that worked out nicely. Not the kind of album I can see myself coming back to super often, but it might be worth keeping in my back pocket for a future night drive. Highlights: Don Aman, Washer
3 1/2. Almost 4. I would listen to this again.
Eerie, haunting, dramatic, interesting.
This probably deserves more than the 3 star rating I’m awarding but it’s quite a moody album, and perhaps I wasn’t always “in the mood”. The soft-spoken vocals against sort of post rock soundscapes which seems ahead of their time. The final track was a good 15 minutes of quarry ambient noises - I quite enjoyed it when the dog barked 14 and a half minutes in…I imagine it would be good to fall asleep to that track.
These songs speak of alienation and are austere almost to the point of stubbornness. Even when the band cranks up the noise and tempo a bit, they do it in a very, very controlled manner. When listening I kept thinking of the prose-poetry Lee Ranaldo tracks on Sonic Youth albums such as NYC Ghosts and Flowers (although Slint’s album predated that by some distance). But with Sonic Youth those tracks are interspersed with others that have a different style and texture, whereas here the sound is pretty uniform from first note to last. If it doesn’t catch your mood, there’s not much to look forward to. I often like this kind of music but something about this particular example didn’t quite click with me.
I think its quite okay. Rate 6/10
I much prefer all the things this inspired; SDRE, Death Cab, etc.
Not terrible. Good BG tunes
Much as I have with the Beach Boys, I have tried many times to feel the way other people do about Slint. And, as with the Beach Boys, I'm ready to give up. Slint is an easier get for me than the BBs, and I do appreciate the music, like the simmering moodiness of "For Dinner..." and the cutting distortion of the guitar in "Breadcrumb Trail" and "Nosferatu Man." But that's about it. The ponderous vocals never did anything for me, and they actively annoy me in "Washer." Sorry, @knaffles.
Spiderland was certainly an interesting album. I have read that it got barely any promotion due to the fact that Slint had already broken up prior to this album releasing. However, it certainly did get some very positive reviews with Melody Maker going as far as to give it "Ten fucking stars". After hearing this album i do not think i will give it ten fucking stars, I'm only gonna give it three fucking stars. I definitely did enjoy the guitars as they had that right amount of heaviness to make them really fun to listen to as i love heavy guitars. However, this album was very quiet to the point where i had trouble hearing it at points. I guess it could be the fact that Will Oldham put his name on this album(despite only taking the photo for the cover) but this quietness really holds this album back from greatness. Best Song: Washer Worst Song: For Dinner...
нормалек, но бенгеров не обнаружено...
I liked the spirit of this a lot. Grungy instrumental music. It never gets too toe-tappy or catchy, but it is a good contemplative companion.
ouvisto pela primeira vez na sexta feira dia 23/01 e depois no dia 25/01. achei legalzinho ate o vocalista é bom demais
I found it a strange but interesting listen. I’m not normally a big fan of the spoken lyric style of singing but after a couple of listens I got past this and just enjoyed the grungy riffs and baselines. Hat tip to the reviewer that pointed me towards the Cortez the Killer cover on the deluxe version.
Slint’s underground classic Spiderland is ultimately a mixed bag that might not feel like such a big deal to the average listener, as its minimal songwriting, stark spoken-word delivery, and slow-burning pacing can often feel underwhelming and missing a clear direction. However, the saving grace of the album is its exceptionally good production—engineered by Brian Paulson—which captures a raw, hauntingly intimate atmosphere where every sharp guitar pluck and dynamic drum shift sounds remarkably crisp and powerful. While the musical ideas themselves might not live up to the massive cult hype surrounding them, the brilliant sonic clarity and atmospheric depth of the recording ensure it remains a technically impressive piece of work.
Can only listen to this if im in the mood for it otherwise i dont enjoy the soft talking portions
Pretty good. Interesting vibes. Actually reminds me of some Midwest emo. Wonder how much they influenced.
Solid album. Good Morning, Captain took me back to my younger days.
Negatives never goes anywhere. Never lifts off the ground. Know stand out track (Least not on first listen) Vocals are way to quiet it was getting a bit annoying at times. Positives i did enjoyed bits of it, and do think its a decent album that definitely deserves a second listen to appreciate it more 👍
Haunting simplicity. Delicate and Heavy Henry Rolinsy vibes. Without the arrogance. Washer and Good Morning Captain stand out.
Middle of the road album. Maybe might like it more after a few listens
Didn’t mind it, can imagine enjoying it more on repeat listens. Last song is the one for me.
Spiderland is an album I appreciate more than I enjoy. I appreciate how influential it was and how instrumental it was in shaping the emerging Post-Rock genre in the 90's. I also appreciate the band's willingness to take their Post-Hardcore roots and stretching out the songs and slowing down the tempos without losing any of the genre's emotiality and impact. That being said, I can't say this is one of my favorite albums or that I return to it often. Key tracks: Washer
V/rv
Has some nice instrumentation though the talky bits got rather out there at times
Buena música. Progresiva en su generalidad, buenos arreglos, un rock duro pero tranqui. Onda she's so heavy?
Enjoyed it - never heard of them before - put me in mind of the Eels to an extent
I'm going to guess this isn't very highly rated but I really liked it. I could understand why it wouldn't be rated high but I ws digging it especially Washer.
I don’t know what to make of this album. Slint kept us guessing. Spiderland is a rock/punk album but with an experimental edge. The whole album has a uniform dismal vibe. Most of the lyrics and topics were just okay, certainly not anything to write home about. But the final song “Good Morning, Captain” was most interesting! The song mostly uses spoken word, which is sometimes whispered or the instruments are so loud you can’t hear it. But the instrumentation is uneasy and discordant, which is perfect for a song detailing someone alone after a ship sunk. Just delicious.
You can tell these guys come from a punk background. There is a lot of that pre-grunge 90s rock grittiness to their work, both in terms of uneasy, dissonant music and tough lyrical subjects set against an eerie voice. In these way, they remind me a bit of something between Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. But they trend a little more atmospheric than Nirvana and a little less vocally theatrical than Smashing Pumpkins. And honestly, with the morose atmosphere that they achieve here against a background of gritty 90s, I'd go even a bit further to call this a bit pre-emo. They seem doomed and they want you to know it. 7 songs at 55 minutes made for tracks that felt a bit rambly/jam sessiony at times. It all comes to an end with a 15 minute field recording of the Utica quarry, which as it turns out is where the album cover photo was taken. Artistically, I like this, but sonically, it got old about 2 minutes in. Anyway, I still enjoyed this album.
I had never heard of this group before today and I am glad I had the chance to listen to this album. I didn't fully love it; the vocals were interesting, but my main focus was some of the great instrumentals.
Negócio estranho, mas gostei...
Definitely an interesting album. Some cool stuff here and there. Would my life be any different if this weren't on the list?
Had some interesting moments, might have appreciated more if I had a more technical music mind but as stands it was a bit slow for me and didn't super click
Very atmospheric
at first was very disconcerted by how ominous and menacing it all sounds. but came to appreciate all the mumbling and shouting and talking and sometimes singing. i’m not sure when j would be in the mood to listen to this but i think it could create the mood for me
Distorted, fuzzy, feedback heavy indie rock. I love feedback as much as the next guy but when some tracks finish will like eleven minutes of it, it seems maybe a tad overdone. That’s my feedback anyway (see what I did there?)
2.8 2x
One of those albums which fans like to tell you is super influential, but you look around at what it influenced and... Shrug? To paraphrase that awful Stefani woman, 'I'm just an album'. Which is what this is. It's just an album. Like many others, it came and went like a burp. The dude on the left of the cover looks like my mate from school, Maccers. The dude on the right looks like Slater from Saved By The Bell. The music isn't very exciting or memorable, but at least they tried. They got out of the flooded quarry one day and said 'hey Maccers, hey Slater, hey...Bryce-leigh, you wanna go play guitar'? They all said no. And thus, Spiderland was born. With zero spiders.
An okay album, I liked Breadcrumb Trail the most.
Does it belong here as a game changing, boundary pushing album? Yep. Is it commercial? no. Sounds like In Utero Nirvana and Korn with no distortion pedals. I do like it tho! Interesting listen.
General thoughts: Coming from ´91 this is probably one of the first appearances of post-rock, like for example, I see the lo-fi recording, slightly distorted guitars, almost whispering voices with long repeating ambiance that radiates down to all these niche-rock-genres... And I usually like said niche-rock-genres, like math rock and such, but this is boring with 20% of the song being interesting and the rest background noise. Not bad per se but gets old after the first track. Instrumental songs are tiktok level emo-core, non-instrumentals feel like a mild attempt at mimicking Bastro. Outstanding song(s): Breadcrumb Trail Weakest song(s): Washer Cover: Lazy Real rating: 2.58
Unsettling but I think that's what they were going for. I appreciate the musicianship! I never want to listen to this again.
Chill and hypnotic. I feel like I’d love hearing them in concert in some grimy shoebox music club but streaming the music didn’t quite hit.
I'm just picturing the emo vs goth kids fight in South Park Best Song: Good Morning, Captain Rating: 5/10 Stars: 3
I understand the criticisms that some other reviewers are putting around this album without it being slow and boring and may be a little too avant-garde, but I enjoyed it.
This is one of those albums that will take a lot longer than a day to take a view on. Some super-nice ideas, and great vocals, but judgement needs to be reserved until I've had time to get to know it. A cautious 3.
Harmonic 90s rock sound was fun and interesting
Best Song: Nosferatu Man This is meh. I get it's post-punk and fighting the mainstream music at the time but, in the end, most of this is decent instrumentals ruined by their singer talking over it. 3/5.
I'm not exactly sure what this was meant to be. It's mostly instrumental, and not bad at that, but I think the album, overall, lacked a soul, lacked an identity that would make me want to know more about who they were. So it will just get shuffled into the middle of the pile, neither good nor bad, just ultimately invisible.
Nice try! What I'm about to write is probably not correct from a theoretical point of view, but I consider Splint's “Spiderland” to be a somewhat premature attempt to break free from the constraints of 80s stadium rock. The mood created by the harmonic structures (especially the frequent use of the major sixth in minor keys) and Brian McMahan's explicitly non-80s vocal style is clearly similar to what became popular six months later under the label “grunge.” However, Slint did not succeed in creating a new mainstream – in my opinion, because their songs lack the intuitive catchiness of the numerous milestones from the fall of 1991. Instead, from today's perspective, they can be seen as pioneers of the more intellectual approaches that became popular in modern extreme metal – although it was still a long way before the right sound could give the whole approach the necessary impact. Whether the former, the latter, or even both were Splint's ambitions is, of course, speculation. In summary, for me this is a rather immature album, but one that is very interesting from a historical perspective. Oh, and of course, with this approach, it's impossible to highlight individual songs – it's not for nothing that Splint didn't release a single single, according to the available information...
niet mijn vibe maar opzich is het zeker luisterbaar. Ik zou zeggen dat het een beetje te grungy/metal is
un objet metallique hanté
Decent!
Ahead of its time. Subdued and moody. I like contemporary bands that do this sort of thing, like La Dispute, so I felt like I should’ve enjoyed this more than I did. I appreciated the guitar work and sense of atmosphere and respect the impact this album had on post-rock as we know it. I’m unsure if I’ll revisit or not.
8 minute songs should be outlawed.
Cool album
This gave me that deja vu vibe - like I've never listened to this or heard of these guys before but it felt familiar but not in a bad way. I'll chalk it up to what I've learned was the influence that this had on indie rock throughout the '90s and beyond. I need to dig a little deeper into this one.
I've listened to this album multiple times and I never know what to think of it. It is heralded as one of the greatest albums of all time, and while it does have its moments, I find it to be kind of boring. The singer isn't exactly great and neither is the rest of the band, and they don't make particularly outstanding music. The songs are really spaced out here which gives them some room to drone on and breathe. This does create some nice and haunting soundscapes and the parting away from conventional song structure is commendable. I don't really like Post-rock much, I can find some good in this but it's not my thing.
honestly a pretty cool album, but i wouldn't listen to it on the regular. favorite song from the album: Washer
Can’t decide what I think of this. Actually liked it less on second listen on the earphones. There are some nice elements to this, I hear Mogwai, but overall there is something a bit precious about them which puts me off
13.10.25 #17 Favourite tracks: good morning, Captain Rate 7/10
I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t really find it good or interesting. An album that felt like it’s potential was never realized and comes off more like a dud. 2.5 / 5
I’ve tried a few times to get into this album and it’s just never stuck.
I remember liking this album more when it came out. Today's listening left me feeling much more "meh".
I can't get the sense of this kind of music
Weezer meets Alice in chains
I can definitely here the influences of mewithoutyou and other bands here.
Some spooky vibes and some spooky mixing (negatively so). Feels like BBNG2 energy but for 1991. Adore this album cover. I have to side with my cousins, but not my favorite. Still! Strong technically and i can see eg influence on Hotelier. The quarry track is fun but skippable. Clppng vibes. THREE!
I can hear how this band influenced a lot of other music-mostly bands I find mildly interesting but not grabbing for very much. There’s some cool rhythmic stuff going on here. All the instrumental / spoken song stuff on here is a bit soporific, so it can be hard to appreciate the nuances in the music. But overall not bad.
Great Songs: Don, Aman Good Songs: Nosferatu Man, Washer, Good Morning, Captain Mid Songs: Breadcrumb Trail, For Dinner... Bad Songs:
While listening to this today (a hot early September day) it started pouring rain out of nowhere. That’s kind of how this album feels: unsettling, tense, and nostalgic like deja vu. Everything is in its precise place to evoke a mood of not-quite-right. Ahead of it’s time by about 8 years, but not something I’d just put on to listen to. Sounds like a more concentrated brew of Stratosphere, OK Computer, or Lift Your Skinny Fists, which I think balance that spooky sound a bit better than the crunchy punk spots do on this record. It’s interesting stuff!
Murky, moody noir album. Bass does a lot of heavy lifting in this album, liked the mood but can’t say I enjoyed the music.
Did not get it, and it's probably my fault. All the things I didn't like about the album are opinion based. I do not think the sounds are bad, the setlist is cohesive and the album feels like a whole. That being said, I just didn't like it. I think I understand the genre, but it's not my cup of tea. The spoken word, the simplistic riffs and the "droning effect" of some parts turned me off. It has some highlights and some good parts, but it's just not my style, and I don't see myself playing this because I want to. Probably will give it some listens in the future, but still...
I understand this album is incredibly influential, especially on music that I adore like all of the windmill scene. But it still has never fully clicked for me. I def enjoy it more than I used to but I have yet to have my moment with it
Cool probably like a 3.5 maybe a little higher
Some interesting bits with echoes of Velvet Underground. Overall quite simple musicianship although scattered with less used chords and atmosphere.
This album is "interesting" like it's not bad but it's somewhere in the middle of being mid and really good. It's just good. To be fair there are some cool moments in there but there's really wasn't enough that really scratched my itch. At the very least it was intriguing enough that it felt digestible from start to finish. Overall, it was a GOOD album. Top 3: Breadcrumb Trail, Washer, and Good Morning, Captain 3.25-3.50/5
Good Morning, Captain
Pretty different sound but not enough going on
Затрудняюсь поставить оценку. Вроде и без раздражения слушается, но не понятно, в каком настроении можно слушать такую мрачную музыку. 5 из 10.
Yeah, it's okay. It's the sort of music that comes on through random recommendations on Spotify while I'm busy doing something, and doesn't quite catch me enough to give my attention to nor turn it off. It's fine, nothing special, nothing I'd go out of my way to hear again.
I expected a lot more out of these with it being on my radar even before this list and I’m sorta disappointed. It’s hard to say what they did wrong but it was just very underwhelming. My favourite song was For Dinner which was amazing. This record was just like rock but a bit different😂. Overall I’m not angry I’m just disappointed (I alr know all the ratings on this are going to be 5/5) but I’m giving this a 6.8/10 3.4/5
you know, i've never quite gotten the hype for this album.
Some interesting music, but somewhat repetitive in my opinion. Don't understand the hype. Maybe just not my cup of tea.
6/10
I lowkey hate this album, but also every now and then I hear it and think it’s a work of genius.
It started off not really to my liking but by thrn end I was jamming. I could see this album growing on me. 3 for now but I bet if I listened to it again I'd rate it higher
Started off sounding a bit like King Missile. Kinda droning but fine.
It was interesting and it tried things, for which I’m grateful. But, the final product did not get me excited.
En delvis intressant skiva. Diggar soundet tillslut. Men det räcker inte. För det är exakt ingen variation. Och pratandet, hela tiden. Är inte så lattjo i längden. Svårt. Vill egentligen inte sätta tre. Men två känns för lite.
Kul lyssning.
i admire the instrumentation and the insane time signatures as a musician myself but this I couldn't seem to get into it for some reason
I can appreciate this, but just not my cup of tea.
Kinda interesting, kinda weird, kinda liked it, kinda didn't.
Bom álbum! Curti. TRIxHBB Kai.
5/10… rock
Not bad
Has a very unique sound - ethereal rock? Favorite track: Washers other picks: breadcrumb trail, good morning captain, nosferatu
I was primed to enjoy this from “For the First Time” but something seems to be missing… I think he needs to speak up a bit more.
I kept trying to listen to this and was distracted at least four times. Felt pretty underwhelmed when I finally played it through. But I’m not sure if that’s because I wasn’t concentrating. But then I think if it was good I wouldn’t have switched off/tuned out and forgotten it so quickly. Maybe one day when I have the time I’ll try again.
Within the first minute I was ready to switch off, but repeated listens I got a lot more from it & whilst it won't be staying on repeat I wouldn't mind coming back in the future
Interesting, but not sure I enjoyed it.
I like this!! What is it about the 90s that has such a distinct sound/feel to it. Never heard of these guys but I'm digging it so far. Interesting, the first couple of songs were kida fast paced, but the rest of the album was slow and kind of mysterious. I liked it but not more than 3 stars.
Slutty vampire voice
I guess.
This album, in places, was like a big spiky honey flavoured jobby. In others, not as good.
me gusto el estilo pero nada demasiado especial si.
no se porque se me estaba haciendo repetitivo. hay canciones que he disfrutado y otras que se me han hecho muy pesadas y que he tenido que pasar.
Spiderland surprised me with its quality. At first, it might come across as a collection of incoherent sounds, but the more I listened, the more I found a melancholic and strangely captivating atmosphere beneath the surface. Some tracks did feel a bit repetitive and wore me out, but overall, I enjoyed the experience. Not amazing, but definitely interesting.
I'd never heard of this band, nor this album before. It was surprisingly good. I think the mix could have been a bit better, especially the vocal mix, but overall it was a good listen.
pas fan du style de chant sur certaines tracks, un peu lent parfois. j'aurais pu aimer plus, mais c'est déjà pas mal !
this requires a state of mind that I’m usually never in, but they sound good
Goodbye to the GROUND! A little bit too much of the spoken word but the instrumentals are intriguing so far. Super dark though. This started as a 2 and has worked its way up to a 4 after Washer. That song ruled. Going back down to a low 3 after that waste of time last song.
Man, definitely potential here, but it is tough to ever really get into it with all the whispering and slow burn. Nosferatu was a solid track. If they'd stuck closer to that formula, this would probably be an album we would have all heard of, instead of an obscurity.
I only got one listen but I need 5 more to feel like Tony Soprano.
I had never heard of these guys before, though I had heard washer. Regardless, they clearly were influential on a bunch of bands, and I’m surprised that I’ve never heard of them because the sound is so quintessential of that era.
wish there were some other word than pretentious I could choose to describe album but yeah it is what it is, tho i actually reallyyy liked the instrumentals, it's just the layering of half singing half, slam poetry reading and the other stuff going on into a mush that makes it pretentious sounding. A three purely due to the instrumentals
40 minutes of noise that didn’t hold my attention. This was almost something I would’ve liked. Maybe if I heard this in college, I would’ve loved it.
Good morning captain was the standout for me. Good album art too
Solid sad 90s rock
"There is a spider... spider... spider... he's deep in my soul... soul... soul..."
Grungy, raw and interesting, but only mildly so. Worth a listen but maybe not a second one.
Solid powerful I like this lyrics and style
This feels like the opening to a dark movie. This sounds like the 90s. I would never have guessed they came from Kentucky. It’s gets better as it goes. I like “for dinner”.
I mean it's good but I don't really get its appeal
Fine for being pre-grunge, college music, alternative, whatever you wanna call it. Outside the mainstream, and sounding what like what would come after . However a lot of it sounds half-formed.
favorite song: Good Morning, Captain
Cool
I can see the influence on a lot of my favourite bands, likely will never listen again though.
Not bad. Definitely has that early 90's smooth grunge rock vibe. If it comes on again, I would listen to it, but I wouldn't seek it out. No standouts.
Not familiar with Slint - so quick google required to get up to speed. I like the atmosphere and the pace of the album - but found it lacking in moments of beauty that captured my interest. Only had time for a couple of listens and I'm sure it would grow given time.
I’m interested
My first impression was quite good, it fits into a style I quite like, call it "dirty rock", lo-fi, soundscape rock, whatever. Elements of this album remind me of Sparklehorse, Dance Hall at Louse Point (Parish/Harvey - amazing album) etc. BUT going along this album let me down. It just doesn't have the spark I'm looking for - without it, the music sounds just like a bunch of mates freewheeling in the studio. Too many songs are basic with too repetitive guitar strumming and a bit long winded. The soundscapes are OK and quite filmic but it's just a bit uninspired. Not a top 1001 album for me. I'll give it a 3 just because of the sound but I think it's really only a 2, musically. But it's one of those albums that depends a lot on my mood. Maybe one day I'll like it more, it has the potential for it.
New to me! This is why I love this project. Very cool sound. Glad for the introduction... but, gotta admit there was no particular song that hooked me. Still, a fun listening experience.
Never been huge on this but certainly appreciate it. Good Morning Captain is an all timer and the album cover is GOAT status.
(good) morning, captain
Hadn’t heard this before and was actually interesting. I didn’t really truly love it but was interesting for sure. 2.66
Mostly bounced right off me
Complete
Clearly a critical album for the post-rock and post-hardcore scenes. Certainly interesting to listen to while also having a number of tracks that kind of meander.
I listened to this about 5:30 in the AM and it didn't do anything for me. but I re-listened later and looked up some info on what's going on with the guitars. time and education helped.
Sorry, don’t get the hype
Spiderland: Lots of whispering and changes in tempo. Write two songs (or maybe three) and mash them into one song - seems to work for them. It’s all kinda hauntingly sad and quiet and just chugs along. Never heard of Slint (named after a pet fish) until the 1001 List, likely because they’re short lived and from KY. Listened to their first album and it’s very similar to this one which comes in at (2.6*s)
i wish i liked it more, it felt like a lot of noise
Litt kult, men også litt ikkje kult
I never heard of them, but it was OK
For some people, this is an incredibly important record. I'm not one of those people, but I do appreciate their appreciation of it. I always loved this album cover for reasons that can't fully explain on the music to be pretty interesting, but not quite where my soul is at these days.
Another gem from the unknowns-corner of this collection. I'd never heard of Slint, either during its incredibly brief existence, or in the decades afterward; nor had I ever heard of the term "math rock" before reading about this album (and very amused that King Crimson and Rush are considered equal members of that genre). And very satisfying to know that I've now listened to what the Independent in 2024 ranked as "number five on their list of the 20 most underrated albums ever" (according to the Wikipedia entry). I'm not sure I could say I really enjoyed this album, as it's hard to sink your teeth into, particularly after only one listen (and despite wearing headphones, I *still* struggled to make out most of the largely-spoken-word lyrics); I thought "Washer" was more accessible than most, and "Good morning, Captain" has...something..a bit more captivating than the others . But either way they definitely created a distinctive sound and style, and I'm not surprised to read that they've inspired a number of other later bands to follow down their lonely path. And I wasn't all that surprised to read that they broke up just before the album was released--insuring that they and the album would remain in obscurity--largely due to the lead singer's depression, but what a shame in many ways.
Musically I'm digging it, but not so much on the vocals - seems to be a trend with me. I like the song structures are a little out there, and there's odd rhythms, they're messing with harmonics and synchopation. It gets a little heavier than I expected- Good Morning, Captain gives me a primus feel- bass driven with lo-fi vocals. I think vocals still end up being the weak link- I don't care for all the spoken stuff, but I did dig the singing and screaming.
The music is cool but the talking thing is kind of weird. 3.5....If I listened more intently there's probably some poetic shit in there, and it might round up to 4, but rounding down for now.
liked the instrumentation, not sure how i feel about the vocals. will need to give it another spin
I can't say that I liked it or that I didn't like it. This album is something unique and I can understand the fascination of some musicians.
Moody semi-singing and long, brooding instrumental jams. I kinda like it, but it drags at times.
This was interesting, kind of reminded me of a punkier version of Cake. I found it entertaining and poetic but probably would not listen to it again. 6/10
Oddly soothing in the background, is that because I only slept for 4 hours and am a little hazy? Long stretches of near-silence, spoken vocals, and skeletal guitar lines suddenly explode into violence.
Fagones called this album "a slog". That is accurate.
It was okay.
Slint was a very-short lived punk from Kentucky. Spiderland was their second and final album. It was released after the band broke up, so the album got no promotional support, and was commercially and critically ignored. In the few years after its release, the album got some critical attention in Britain. Slint's songs employ dissonance, unusual rhythms, and frequent pacing changes, giving them an uneasy feeling. Brian McMahon's vocals alternate between spoken word and punk-like near screams. The result is interesting, edgy punk that inspired a few genres of 90s and aughts post punk.
Not a band who's name I recall being mentioned before, so I came into this with no preconditions. Other that it should be an awesome album, seeing as it's here. So...was it? Well, it's wasn't bad, and a fairly enjoyable post-rock platter. It certainly made a change from grunge, rap and acclaimed singer-songwriters appearing in my "to Listen" pile, but I doubt I'll need o relisten or a while. A 3.5 star LP.
already listened to it, very ahead of it's time
fun and kinda spooky. I don’t understand math rock but I can see how this might have inspired modern math rock maybe
очень тихо и неотличимо, надо будет вернуться после успеха в ЮК видимо
Take the lyrics out, and this album rips (3)
I get the influence here and I don’t hate it, it’s just kinda there.
2.5
3.5
I found this to be pretty average, nothing to write home about. Good musicianship but it didn’t speak to my soul. It just rounds up to a 3, but it was close.
I never heard of this album or band before so I was pleasantly surprised to hear such raw grungy sounds from a time period earlier than they really took off. From front to back this is such a 90s hard rock album that is easy to listen to and full of originality. Bonus points for the bonus soundscape track. 3.5/5
Listened to this on a 787 from Paris CDG to New York's JFK. Washer and Good Morning Captain are my favourite songs on the album. Missing a little something, but glad to give it a listen again. Album cover is great too.
Great name. Pretty good album. You can definitely tell how they may have influenced a lot of the mid-90s music scene. There were parts of the song Washed, in particular, that sounded like they may have been stolen by Weezer, STP, and Nirvana.
OK, yeah, not my thing.
I enjoyed this - slightly one paced but album wasn’t so long it bothered me.
Thought this was actually pretty good, if a little understated
Is twooo loud. Some cool sections . Noice and punky minor eerie sounds. Not my biggest thang tho.
Not exactly my thing but very interesting.
Never heard of this. It was interesting but not something i feel I'd really come back to.
Pretty decent.
Back in the year 2020, I decided on a whim to listen to all the albums Rolling Stone listed as part of there 100 Best Metal Albums. I don’t know why I thought that was a good idea, but I did it. For the life of me, I attempted to understand who would be a fan of certain types of metal. I know sludge is usually for stoners and black is for depressed Norwegian teenagers who shouldn’t be trusted with matches. But I can’t figure out the fans of the more… abstract stuff. Now Slint was nowhere on this list, obviously. This is more rock than metal. But I felt the same listening to it as I did Neurosis or Isis; I want to like this, but I’m just apathetic to it. I definitely feel this album’s influence. It feels like a punk album, but slowed down to illicit more feelings of isolation and sadness rather than rage and rebellion. It hard for me to think that there was anything like it in 1991 or before. But no matter how hard I try to get into it, I just can’t. It could be because the songs drag on for too long or that parts of this sound like a spoken word album, but with guitars blaring over the voice. I hope I’m not the only one who had trouble listening to the lyrics. I really wanted to like this one. The grim ambiance and heavy guitars made it feel like it would be good. But it just didn’t break through. Favorite track: Good Morning, Captain Other hits: Breadcrumb Trail, Nosferatu Man
Desconocidos. No están mal.
I enjoyed it whilst also simultaneously waiting for something to happen in every song.
Mid.
A slow, moody, sombre album. I like bits in here, but it's a bit much for me overall. I prefer more conventional compositions. I don't mind the spoken lyrics so much, as that definitely goes with the vibe and what they're doing. But it's quite draining, and discordant at times, and it just wore me down a bit. 2.5 rounded up.
Intrigued, but not enamored of. I may revisit, and will certainly recommend for those who understand music theory and odd timing.
This one was interesting and offered a very... Specific vibe? I feel weirdly drawn to this album, but not immediately such that I want to listen to it again so soon. The instrumentals were fairly basic and repetitive, and the vocal work felt disjointed, but it felt like it really worked somehow. 'Don, Aman' stood out to me.
I think their song construction would great favor a live setting. The slow lumbering discordancy seems to beg for a smokey music hall. Struggled to stay with this. I would have likely enjoyed this a great deal more at 21 than i did 20-something years later.
too slow, was waiting for it to get going and it didn't. Didn't hate it though either, last song was pretty interesting "Good Morning, Captain"
Definitely interesting, but not really my thing. A little too sparse for my liking.
This could be right up my street, but i couldnt find a way in on the day. Probably more down to having no time to give it attention. Will come back to it
