# Album Name: Spiderland # Artist: Slint # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Not for meeeeeeeeeee. Pretty boring i thought. Its got a bit of an underground edge. But nah. # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? No
The first song started off with a bit of potential. It kind of reminded me of "La Dispute" that featured more talking than singing and at first it sounded like stream of consciousness but probably has some deep poetic meaning. I could see how multiple listens would unlock deeper meaning and I'd better understand what it was going for. But, I didn't like it enough to keep listening on repeat. I get what they were going for and I appreciate the artistic leap they took but it didn't really land with me personally. I particularly was confused by the 15 minute album closer that was nothing but the sounds of bugs chirping.
1.75 - There were some moments of this album that really worked for me, but a much larger portion that did not.
Acceptabel, maar er zijn betere dingen in het genre - 2,5
I suppose an argument can be made for including works that appear to be foundational or inspirational for musical movements that will follow on a list of albums we all must hear before we die, even when those albums are somber, dull self-indulgent pieces of cr@p like this one.
I really need to try this one again, because as it stands it did not work for me. I get the point of the songs is to build suspense, but the build to me felt monotonous and whispered lyrics did nothing for me. This helped by the fact that when the drops came they were incredibly underwhelming, just left me with nothing to chew on. But I fear I’ve missed the point of this record. I’m gonna listen again at some point with fresh ears, and maybe a little more patience
I didn’t hate but also I didn’t exactly love it either
Kind of sounds like how you would sing something when you know you cant sing. Honestly couldn't find one song i liked enough to listen all the way through. Music wise it was ok. Its brooding and when there's no " singing " its alright.
Sounds like young Lou Reed trying to latch onto grunge.
Who? Apparently, just before the album was released, the band split up due to guitarist-vocalist Brian McMahan's depression - having listened to this depressing Post-Rock album, I can't say that I'm surprised.
nope.
Not really my thing. Will note that it's still enjoyable and its crazy this was produced in 4 days. Appreciate the smooth melodies and relaxing somber tone. My least favourite because it really just isn't the type of music I listen to.
Again, not a fan of sing-talking: it's giving rock audiobook. Favourite track: Washer
hmm i dunno
If "I totally have a girlfriend, she just goes to another school. In Canada." was an album. Hopefully they passed their creative writing class.
4.5/10
Very 90s grunge
Yeah, I felt ever song sounded the same. I won’t be adding this to my album collection
Fine probably will like on more listens. Could only hear the music in one ear which was annoying!
Music by and for people who aren't doing so great.
Not really for me, strangely
Ummm....Kinda into the atmospheric movie score aspect of some of it but generally makes me kinda sad in a not enjoyable way. And I usually love depressing music
grungey
My interest was piqued. I knew by name & several of the players in & around & adjacent to the scene & indeed am a big fan of some of it. I found this album to be utterly unremarkable & completely forgettable. It missed my expectations to such a degree that I think maybe the experiment was tainted somehow & I’m gonna have to put this in the “Try again later“ pile. As is, we’re going deuce
I hate spiders.
I just don’t get this one.
Felt like being trapped in an av piece in a pretentious gallery
Not the biggest fan of the slam poetry vocals. Some of the instrumentals were up my alley, but others sounded like when I was learning guitar for the first time and trying out less than stellar chord progressions.
It's a no from me, dawg
I was more aware of the album cover than the album. Lo fi, dissonant and tons of building up tension but it just felt like it never went anywhere. You can hear what would influence other bands but Slint just never really got there.
Not for me
Some weird stuff going on here. I am probably missing the point, but songs are not Very melodic or catchy
Moments of greatness surrounded by a lot of non-music. Noise, lofi technical sounds, etc.
Not for me. Weird whispered and spoken vocals and nothing that can reasonably described as a tune.
A for effort with the 5/4 time track, but I'm not a fan of albums that put noise on them just for the sake of it.
This was a strange album. The instruments were GREAT. I loved the tone of the guitar. The bass and drums were really good. The singing was atrocious, and the songwriting was lackluster. The second half of the album bored me to death.
Prior to listening I expected to rate a one or two. After listening I would give a 2.5. Not quite average.
I had a friend in college who was big on these guys. He would insist on listening to it. While I think some of the music is interesting, the spoken word, open-mic like talking is annoying after the first minute and there's some singing, but it sounds like what I'd hear in the early 90's in every single garage. I actually do think everyone should hear this before they die. Especially those who are starting out playing their local bar or dive bar scene. Don't do this. Sing. Leave the open mic poetry elsewhere. 1.86 / 5 stars
i really want to like this more, i respect its influence, but man is it just boring for most of the album. some high highs but mostly slow and not very exciting
It was marginal.
That is certainly one of the albums of all time
Meh record, did not spark anything on me.
This album cover is pretty iconic, surprised I've never listened to these guys. Here goes! Ah well, it's not for me. 28 year old me would've dug this when it came out but old me doesn't have the patience for all this slow dissonance.
Every one of these songs had potential and not a single one did anything with it. I was so bored
I feel like I should have enjoyed this more than I did
Pretentious noodling with mumbling vocals.
Meh. The talking over the music gets boring quickly and most of these songs are that style. I’ve heard worse on this list so I’ll give it a 2.
Honestly, not a fan. I've definitely heard worse, but it just didn't do it for me.
4/10
The music was ok. From the first two tracks, my thoughts were. 'Get a singer'. But it became evident later that he could sing when he wanted, he obviously didn't want to very often. Which is a shame it might have got up to a 3 without the screeching.
It's a tricky one. A very influential album so they say, I have listened to it in the past just to see what the fuss was about, and I was never really bothered with it. It's not going to be a regular player any time soon, but it did have its merits.
Background punk music that I have already forgotten what it sounded like. 4/10
My initial take on Spiderland is that I can't hear the goddamn lyrics and the guitar is actually kind of annoying and shrill sometimes. This seems like more of an atmospheric album. Ok, thats all fine and cool. But it seems to me that the band just picked a kind of weird lane and stayed in it for the entire album. It's not all that bad though. I like the distorted guitars and a bit of the droning, chugging rhythms. It's still a little slow and uneventful. The album just feels like a lot of missed potential. Standouts were "Nosferatu Man" and "Good Morning, Captain." I feel like I should like this album because I'm usually into weird/dark ambient stuff, but I really don't think I do. The all spoken serial killer style vocals were just disappointing. I'm kinda stuck between a 2 and 3 star rating because there are glimpses of something cool here, but the band never gets there for me. It's gotta be a 2.
It’s definitely early 90s sound, and it’s a surprise that this was their 2nd album … like, someone told them to make another one. I’ll pass
Boring, slow
Y'know, I was actually interested to listen to this album. Honestly, I was. I read on Wikipedia that this was gonna be some math rock (among other things), and, y'know, I've had some experience with that before. Sure, that experience was a parody where the refrain went "I'm smarterrrrr than yoooou," but still. It'd be neat to get some real experience. It could be cool. And I had a good idea what I was getting into, so it wasn't like I was gonna be jumpscared by anything. I was gonna have a good time. And yet what I **actually** got was ... jeez, a heckuva lot less. On a purely musical level, I think this is one of the most nothing albums I've ever received. Both in terms of shit actually happening and in terms of ... y'know, leaving me with any feeling. I'm not even sure what I was **supposed** to get out of this. Maybe a light sense of melancholy? I wish I could've gotten something even remotely close to that, goodness. It's funny. This feels like one of the first albums in a while where I've actually gotten more out of the **lyrics** than I've gotten out of the music. And it's not like the lyrics do much for me anyway; I couldn't exactly sort out what they were supposed to mean. But I was interested in their narrative style. The way they were spoken sometimes didn't do it for me 100%, but, y'know, it was different, and I appreciate that. There's clearly something **here**. I just wish the music could have been more interesting to support that. And it's not even like the music is all bad. There are a couple of releases that make the endless build-up worth it. But largely, that's all this music sounds like to be: endless build-up. It's a kind of sound where, if I had to assign it a color, it'd be ... grey. With maybe a slight gradient that goes off to black and white at the edges, though it's largely a dull, blurry grey. I mean, maybe if I was more into music theory I could pick out exactly what was going on in these instrumentals and get something out of 'em, but since I got myself a pretty tin ear... I'unno. I'm a little surprised I even managed to pull this much out to say about it. It's just a largely dull album, though on the cusp of being something more interesting, and I think that's ultimately what disappoints me about it most of all. Like, as much as I wanna give it additional props for almost being something ... eh. I just can't. To the people who gave this thing a cult following, I'm glad you can hear something in it that I don't. Myself ... I think I'm just gonna go listen to that math rock parody again. At least stuff is happening on that. ""I'm smarterrrrr than yoooou..."
I appreciate how this may have inspired a lot of music I listen to now, but by the mid-point, I said out loud, “we get it!!”
Len Houmous invested almost all his money in a theme park called Spiderland in 1955 right after he got back from Korea! It almost went completely tits up. It was a health and safety nightmare! Fortunately he got a large royalty cheque the next year! 2.2 6/6 Good Morning, Captain
Pretty boring. I do acknowledge the sound difference and evolution in music but this album won’t be on repeat.
No thank you. Too hard and screamy.
I like its intent more than I do its execution. This probably isn’t meant for just anyone. If I were buds with these guys I’d probably love it, but as a random listener it doesn’t translate.
The one song I recognized and slightly enjoyed didn't require any more talent than the rest of the lame album.
This is … not good. It feels like they are trying really hard to be all artsy and mysterious and ends up feeling contrived.
Would not buy
"Atypical rhythmic meters, harmonic dissonance and irregular song structures" do not necessarily make for good music. Most people gave this music a rating of 5. It comes across as boring and lifeless to me. I don't get it.
Not for me
Kinda dirgey, kinda bleah... Nothing to really note, its short but feels like it lasts forever.
wasn't too keen on this. i'm sure it's appreciated elsewhere, just not here.
Broody, atonal, muttering. If this is what inspired math-rock and post-rock, I'm glad someone got something out of it. This felt like kids who have some musical talent wasting it under the wings of someone who didn't realize what they could do. This isn't musical. My rating: 2/5
Lots of acoustics and guys muttering vague lyrics.
Mouais...
Thinking about time again, after yesterday's review. Nevermind came out in 1991, a moment that arrived fully formed, even if it had been a few years in gestation. Grunge was a last hurrah for rock as mass culture: major labels, MTV, guitars all over the radio. To me, Nirvana looked like adults: troubled, damaged, wives, children. Loud, scary, not for kids. And yet five months before Nevermind, Spiderland appeared. Not on a major label, not heralded as a generational shift, but as something obscure, subterranean. A record that felt like it belonged to another temporality altogether: slow to spread, slow to be recognised, slow to be understood. By the time I first heard it, the authors of Spiderland looked like children to me - I must have been five years older than they had been then! Britt Walford was twenty; David Pajo twenty-two, barely older than Dave Grohl. To think of Nevermind and Spiderland as coeval is difficult, as if they occupy parallel timelines: one of adulthood magnified and one of juvenile distance. How can post-rock exist during rock's big blowout? Yes, it’s impossible to think of Nevermind and Spiderland as contemporaneous without tearing a hole in history. Nevermind was all immediacy: verse-chorus-verse, melody, beat, a voice that sounded like everyone's feelings all at once. Spiderland was delay, suspension, guitars staggering into compound time, music that seemed perpetually on the verge of collapse. Both are records of guitars and drums, but the distinction is one of ontology. Nevermind’s songs were designed to be absorbed instantly, to circulate endlessly on MTV. Slint’s were unassimilable: badly recorded, awkwardly timed, too strange to be broadcast. Creepy rather than scary. But the networks overlapped - Albini recorded both bands - but the separation between Nirvana’s mainstream eruption and Slint’s cult marginality reveals how many worlds can exist simultaneously, how culture is never one story but many, divided by qualities of ambition, distribution, luck. Bleach is more mainstream than Spiderland because of Nevermind; In Utero for much the same reason, even though they got Albini in to indie it up. Of course, Cobain and company could have made Spiderland had they wanted to. But they didn’t. Or maybe there was something in both Cobain and Grohl that couldn't. They chose the path of mass resonance, and briefly succeeded in detonating the mainstream from within. Endless Nameless and Gallons of Rubbing Alchol… are hidden tracks on their multi-million unit shifters. Could the lads in Slint have made Nevermind? Britt Walford played on Pod, but didn't stick around for The Last Splash. Pajo was in Zwan. So I guess not. At their most effective, they built something smaller, stranger, but enduring. To discover Spiderland years later, through the ruins of grunge, is to glimpse the parallel culture that was always there underneath, a hidden continuity that suggests other futures for guitar music—futures that were never realised, but which continue to haunt and count awkwardly. 3 “Ooooooooooo look at us we can count to 7 and play guitar quiet…seriously though, don’t look at us.“ (Slint) I appreciate that Math Rock and Post-Grunge are entirely different genres but honestly I was getting Badnose vibes from some of this. Lame. 1.7/5
Not my tea. Might have enjoyed more at a different time though.
Cool whispery poems, muddy. Prob won't listen again, tho.
This was okay.
I get that they have their own interesting identity and style, and are up for pushing the boundaries of rock and punk. But unlistenable to me.
is it totally crazy and out-of-pocket for me to think music should generally sound good?
Not a fan of death metal sounds
Meh. Nothing remarkable here
disappointed at yet another 1990's "classic" It was as expected crap. Saving grace was a decent bit of guitar now and then, but really they should have bought a drum kit.
Personally, I really dislike spoken word lyrics in music. This album is somewhere between a 2 and 3, but I'm not feeling generous today.
Chatinho. Nada de mais. 6 músicas e 44 minutos.
Chats a lot
FAVO: Washer,
I know this album is for someone. I just don't think I am that person.
Some instrumental noodling around with occasional spoken word poetry or some kind of story I didn't understand nor care about. Eventually they get off their asses and a cacophony of sound hits in one of the last two tracks. "Utica Quarry, Nighttime" was listed as a digital bonus track. I wasn't about to waste another 15+ minutes on an optional assignment I wasn't enjoying.
Boring overall. Lyrics were washed out and nonsense. Music wasn't interesting
Sounds like the worst bits of Sonic Youth and Pavement stretched out over a whole album. Lots of guitar noodling and mumbling, I found it a slog
Ok. Nothing to write home about this album. First time to listen to this album. Not really sure what to think about it. I like some of the music but not necessarily a fan of the vocals.
Quarry at nighttime get real
Not for me. Hard to see the appeal
I was very hopeful to start listening, I've know the band by name for ages and knew it was important to post- and "math"-rock scene, but found it merely cursorily inspirational to said genres. I can see why, but it was still very... slim. Mostly I felt like the music had too much "empty air between the notes", which left a lot of room for the vocals, which I found mediocre at best. Acquired taste I'm sure, but one I am interested in pursuing at this point, I'd rather just put on some Helmet.
Didn’t feel like finishing but didn’t mind. 2.5
Hard to pigeon hole this one but it didn't do much for me
Mom, can we get My Bloody Valentine? No, we have My Bloody Valentine at home. MBV at home is this. Tuneless drivel. They wish they had all the pedals and effects that their contemporaries have.
Not really a fan of spiders, so 1 star lost. Listened to the album and not really a fan of it, so 2 stars lost. So, this album gets 2 stars.
The post rock I like and the post hardcore I like both have much more in the way of production than this. It's like sitting in a room with a bunch of boring miserable men having a moan while a just-ok band practices next door. 2*
Banal. Boring. Boys.
experimental punk?? primus adjacent?
Post-rock progenitors or post-adolescent pretenders? In six lugubrious tracks, these Louisville lads noodle their way toward atmosphere like Sonic Youth with a migraine—atonal guitar clatter, monotone mutters, and that oh-so-serious sense of importance. “Washer” floats on watery dynamics and could pass for a Wall-era Floyd outtake if Roger Waters outsourced the vocals to a dead-serious Weird Al. “Good Morning, Captain” earns its cult status by actually going somewhere—slowly, sure, but with purpose. That said, I’ve heard funeral processions with more bounce. For fans of dread, dirge, and deliberate tedium. Not my idea of a good time, but I suppose someone’s gotta brood.
Art for arts sake? The last track is ok
In a nutshell: emo post-rock. Nice guitar loops and riffs. Brian's mostly spoken word delivery is creepy. It was more of a bummer to listen to rather than an introspective experience. Personally, I'd recommend Mclusky and other bands over Slint as an introduction to post-rock. But other notable post rock musicians have sung Slint's praises (members of Mogwai, Pavement, Sebadoh to name a few). Overall: 4/10
un peu trop criant
There's something enigmatic hidden in here. Didn't find it, but maybe I will later.
turpa vittu kii pliiis............
An interesting listening experience. Very raw, which I liked about it. But it just wasn’t the style of music I’d typically listen to. It’s definitely possible that it could grow on me, but first listening experience, I’d give it a 2.
I did not enjoy this very much
# Playlist Track - Breadcrumb Trail # Notes - Not my cup of tea.
Their second and final album. Rock / Experimental Rock. A tense, foreboding and anxiety ridden album. Spoken word lyrics and sung vocals. Changes in tone mid song throughout. Let's face it this is weird yet strangely cool at times. I quite like Nosferatu Man. Each song is maybe a minute too long though. A strange one this.
Kinda meh for me. Nothing really stood out
Score: 4/10 | Favorite Song: Breadcrumb Trail I know Spiderland is widely hailed as a landmark album that shaped the post-rock genre, but for me, it was more of a tough listen than a rewarding one. The spoken-word delivery, minimalism, and tension-building structures often felt more draining than immersive. I appreciate the ambition and the eerie atmosphere they create, especially on “Breadcrumb Trail,” which actually pulled me in with its surreal storytelling and shifting dynamics. That track shows what the band could do when their experimental tendencies click. Unfortunately, the rest of the album rarely met that mark for me. A lot of the songs just didn’t land emotionally or musically. The stripped-down guitars, slow builds, and jarring transitions felt more like exercises in restraint than fully-formed ideas. There’s a certain coldness to the album’s tone that left me disconnected, and the lack of melodic payoff or rhythmic momentum made the experience feel more like a chore than an adventure. I get why this is a cult classic, but personally, I struggled to find much I’d want to return to beyond the opener.
A somehow moodier Radiohead with a lot of talking
Screeching music isn’t for me
The music here kind of gave Indie version of Nirvana vibes (these guys are not near the same stratosphere as Nirvana for the record), especially on Washer. But almost every song ran on too long and was super boring, mostly during the spoken word portions. This honestly was pretty depressing. Low 2.
Best part was the breakdown toward the end of Washer. However, 30 seconds of good doesn't outweigh the rest of the bore. Grungy snoozefest.
That was more like a book on tape with instruments added in. Really didn't like the lip smacking talking on Don, Aman. Whole album was way too angsty for me
I didn’t like this. I’m still glad I listened, since now I at least tried something new.
Don't like it, too much off-the-grid talking/whistling
Weird and affecting and off and weird and I think I like it maybe? I dunno?
Reminds me of sonic youth but slower and more depressing
Maybe in the background, at a bar, while talking over others, I could “listen” to it. It got me to browse math-rock on spotify for a minute ———————————— My non-musician scoring system. 5 - Love it. Would play anytime, buy, see live… 4 - Good music. 3 - Average playlist. Depends on time and setting. 2 - I can’t listen to whole songs. 1 - No.
OK
Mumble. Mumble. Mumble. Mumble. Mumble. Mumble. I think I already listened to this auditory ZzzQuil when I was listening to the Rolling Stone 500 Album list in order and it has not become any more memorable.
The Good: A land of Spider! The Bad: What if we suffer from arachnophobia… The Ugly: Realizing that the band probably suffers from the afore mentioned, which explains them all being neck deep in water, so that the spiders can’t get to them. I tried… I really tried… but I just can’t like this album. I think I’ve listed to this album 4 times over the course of 3 days, so where’s my medal? Problem that I have with this album is that it’s neither here, nor there, nor anywhere. Yet, upon investigation, it seems that it is here, and there, and everwhere… at least, that is what hte music snobs have to say. Won’t totally rain on the unfortunate parade of Slint… will stick with 2*
This is pretty boring. The last song, Captain, had more to it, but I'll not be listening again, probably.
Sounds interesting and good but only for a few bars. There are so many bars. Just because you can play irregular time signatures doesn’t mean you should. 2.4
Not for me
Too much spoken word for my tastes. The volume dynamics were also a bit annoying. The best song was Washer.
this is rough
Not terrible...just aggressively boring. And so emo before there was such a term I guess. Then again, I could see myself in 1991 taking some spoken word poetry I had written, finding a few compatriots, and coming up with something like this.
This sounds like slint spiderland sounds. Fugazi but worse.
I turned it off after skipping 3 songs
✅✅ Washer I sense cool people like this. Thus I infer that I am not very cool.
It wasn’t offensive but I’d still rather not. I had to actively unclench my shoulders as they kept creeping up towards my ears.
I don't get it. Getting further through the album.... maybe I do?
Another influential album, another quirky experience but this is all form and no finesse. Much as I like hearing some time signatures doing the work, it can't be the only thing.
Brooding and sometimes heavy music. I don’t like the soft, spoken word vocals. They’re too low in the mix and difficult to hear. The vocals also feel pretentious. This band has power and big emotions simmering under the surface. I’d rather they unleash that energy instead of crafting these long, artsy, slow burn songs.
A very interesting album, a lot of different things going on in every song. I had a fun time listening through it even though Its not something I think I will listen to again. When I listen to music I often get a sense of when I would listen to it in my everyday life. I can't say I get that feeling at all with Slint.
Never got the hype around this album. It still hasn’t clicked for me.
Different
Not bad, not my vibe
Honestly, I'm not sure what I just listened to
I appreciate the atypical song structure, variation of lyrics (spoken word or screaming), and off kilter time signatures but it needed to be stronger to stand out. This was pretty exploratory and there were aspects that I enjoyed but it's missing something. The last half of the album is better than the first and that's only three songs. I don't like the band name but the album is aptly titled, like a spider crawling across a wall, it slowly builds but then there's no payoff, you squish it and walk away. 1.50 for sad boi 90's teens.
I can see how Slint is regarded as an influencer of the indie/math-rock genre. This album takes you on an eerie journey through Spiderland. Most of it is slow, long, and drab but I did like "Nosferatu Man" and "Good Morning, Captain." Similar to some Nick Cave works. Not that bad or that good...1.68.
Not my thing and felt a little pretentious. Does anyone ever say, "Yeah, Slint, crank it up!" or do they just nurse their flat white and think Deep Thoughts as it plays?
Nothing grabbed me here
I actually listened to parts of 3 podcasts about this band because I was so confused. And they all said it was brilliant. It feels like being at a bar a some guy is trying to talk to you about something you’re not that interested in and the music is just a bit too loud to hear him anyway so you just half nod and hope he leaves.
Found it a bit dull, not gonna lie.
un po' insulso
2 hard 4 me
Too many of the songs have the same notes being played repetitively. A couple of the songs have variety, but I keep thinking about a guy on a stage playing the same note over and over and over. Not my kind of thing. The first song was good, though.
This album gave me blue balls
This album is stuck in 1991. It can’t live anywhere else.
2.5
Bit too maths rock
<the Beatles
IDK man I'm just not sold on the juice, but I would display this album cover
WAY too boring to be as repetitive as it is. i like the idea and mostly like the vibes but the actual music part wasn’t doing it for me
If I wanted creepy teenage boys to whisper in my ear I'd build a time machine and go a jr. high dance.
Ahhh, the joy of chord progressions... zzzz
It was sort of like listening to nothing at all.
Tråkigt. Svag tvåa
An extra star for all that hard work they put into doing irregular time signatures.
Perfect listening for a 15 year high schooler that’s just been dumped by his girlfriend.
I did not enjoy listening to this gloomy, sad album at all, but I do appreciate its place in music history. I could see someone making a convincing argument that without this, we wouldn't have had Brand New's more proggy, moody emo, or today's slowcore. But it would take additional convincing to tell (adult) me that those are positive contributions to the music world.
Kind of boring. I've heard this before and I like it slightly more than the first time, but this sort of indie rock isn't my thing.
I'd never heard of Slint before, but somehow I recognised the first 2 songs from this album Not a fan, found it incredibly dull and dreary 2 ⭐️
This was a bit of a waste of time.
not my stuff
meh, slow 90s alt rock
the exact kind of crunchy weirdo music i like, ruined by spoken word weirdo stuff i don't like

Ekkert spes. Bara leiðinlegt.
If 1992 were an album. Why did music sound so grim in the early 90s?
I like the sound. Not the talking
Incredibly mediocre. Clearly ripping off the Cocteau Twins, and not nearly as good as Red House Painters (who are basically a better version of this exact same band).
Unnecessary
No sure why this one was on here. Felt like something a group a friends who learned their instruments yesterday could make. I’m sure for some people that was part of the appeal but it does not work for me.
The fist track reminded me a bit of early Rush. I'm sure that wasn't their intention, but there you go. Other than that there was little of interest here, and it got increasingly tedious. It scrapes a 2.
This is the album to reach for if you like Sonic Youth but are also extra-hipster.
The spoken lyrics were really annoying. If they changed alternative, it was not for the better.
Boy, that sure was something.
Not surprised they only made two albums.
No good
Boring and depressing
Um...what? 2/5
I feel like there is music that music theorists love that I just don’t get and this album is it. In one word: Pretentious. In two words: Whisper Shouty. 2⭐️
This whole album made me feel ill at ease. That’s kind of the point, but it’s not the reason I listen to music. I think these are talented musicians, but I can’t keep from thinking these boys need therapy.
Interesting, but not for me!!
Their being from my home town and my recognizing the swimming hole where the album photo was taken predisposed me to like this, but they overcame that. There isn't anything on here that I'd like to hear again.
The instrumentals were alright but not a fan of the vocals. With a few exceptions, the lead singer was just talking into the mic.
A bit of post punk style with 90s alternative aesthetic. Not a fan though, the songs kind of meander.
I cannot believe I listened to the whole thing. It was so bad. I'm sure they have their fans but I couldn't stand them.
while my guitar gently webs
I didn't want the guys to drown(cover art), but was hoping enough water would make them stop playing.
First of all, after reading the blurb I realised I wasn't in for 2 hours, but 40 minutes (thanks Apple music for bastardising so many albums into 'deluxe' or 'remastered' versions). Anyhow, this band reminds me of Pavement or Deus, but to my ears they both have more of an edge to keep me engaged. These are predictable and safe by comparison. Not unpleasant, sure these songs would grow on me over time, but would I want to return often? Probably not. Sidenote. While I'm writing, the Cure have a new single released, so I kinda can't wait for this to finish so I can't listen to that.
sollte das schoon grunge sein oder noch Punk? eher nicht so ...
The title made me dread this. The wiki page made me actually pretty excited for it. Turns out, not mad about it. I can see why it has a cult following - not just for the band that broke up as the second album came out - but for the weirdness and intensity of the album itself.
So if good intentions pave the road to hell this was I-25. Maybe it wasn’t that bad but it was hard not to get lost in the fodder of unorganized teenage rage and musical redundancy. Washer was a key track. However, it took me three attempts before I got through the album once. Probably won’t come back to this one.
This is some dark grunge shit. Not sure what to make of this one. This is definitely not my cup of tea. I could see how someone is into though. IT definitely has a vibe and is locked into that vibe. I think I tried this one years ago based on a similar list or some random deep cut recommendation. I didn't particularly like then and I still don't like it. Maybe I'll remember this time to not bother again.
Could have possibly been a three stars if the lead singer actually sang. Overall, not super memorable tracks and just found it meh.
The entire album felt like b reel background music. That being said… I liked it. Tempted to make it a 3, but I don’t think it lives up to some of the other 3 stars on the list.
The spoken word is what does it in for me because the best parts of the album are the stretches that don’t have lyrics. Was hoping I was going to discover a new band I’d like. I did not.
Nah
This didn't do anything for me. Kind of an indie rock sound that faded into the background for me. I'm not interested in listening again.
5 pieces of shit in a row. Please give me something at least halfway decent.
Shoegaze is a genre you have to get, otherwise it goes on a bit and goes nowhere
Spoken word with drone rock in the background. Some noise rock at times, but most of it is chill and grooving. One of those concept albums that likely has a cult following, but I am not a part of that. This is underwhelming at first listen and reminds me of bad alternative rock - a band that wanted to be another band and never did their own unique thing.
started off interesting then become boring
Occasional hits, More misses, in a quiet, Restrained alt album
Really dull. How is this on the list?!
Not my thing - spoken word over disjointed guitars
This is not for me. But it reminds me of a lot of things that are for me that aren't for anyone else.
Couldn't be bothered past track one.
"We are trying to make experimental music like Velvet Underground, but we aren't talented"
Intriguing at first, then just kind of boring. Like their name.
It’s a solid 2.5. Not a style of music I’m interested in, but it didn’t really offend me either. It all sounds like a lightly polished improv. Most of the songs are 8 bars repeated for 5 minutes with some instruments getting louder or cutting out for a while, or embellishing on the original 8 bars for 8 more bars, and maybe sometimes changing up the rhythm. I often had a hard timing hearing the spoken parts, so those didn’t add much for me. 2.5
Not a fan,,,, not sure what they were going for
One of those albums that is entirely unremarkable. No hate, no love, not even a memory of it a day later.
I liked the number of songs, but they were all too long. There were no songs that particularly stood out to me. Odd vibes from this one, reminded me of the Afghan Wings album. High 2
Again I was busy in the 90’s. Missed and never heard, or forgotten some arguably great music. To be great or at the least good, I’ve got to want to listen again & again. This does sound like an album made by kids. So from the 1st track to the next to last track it felt like the same song over & over again. And then finishing with what I guess is a recorded monotonous rain/storm to break the mood of the previous monotonous song(s)…I’m done & don’t have to ever listen again.
#260. Bizarre, and in my opinion not in a good way. 2/5: meh
Any band with a bunch of moody spoken word is suspect. I would have liked to have seen the reunion tour where they play this album, but I don’t want to listen to it again. Maybe I will when I listen 898 more albums.
Murky alternative rock which chugs along. Influential but not particularly enjoyable in its own right. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Good Morning, Captain Date listened: 19/06/24
Interesting
this was fine? what am i missing
I think it could be good, but it's just too much whispering and talk-singing for my tastes.
Pretentious and blissfully short.
I wanted to like it and I tried, but for some reason I just couldn’t. It had potential but I just had to admit I did not like it much.
This is a strange one. They say it’s math rock, but the math doesn’t add up. The guitar parts sound like what I do when I’m just messing around, playing half baked lofi riffs. And the vocalist sounds like even he isn’t interested in what is going on. The only parts of this album I actively enjoy are those when the guitar volume rises and fills out. I unintentionally listened to the bonus track, Utica Quarry, Nighttime. I originally read the track title as Utica Quarry, Nightmare. And boy was it a nightmare. 15 minutes I’ll never get back. The song would have dropped Spiderland into the basement (-1 star) if it weren’t a bonus track.
This is the type of band that can kill a basement show set, but years later when you remember that you bought their tape after the show and give it a relisten, you remember why you forgot that you even had this album in your cassette collection in the first place.
Nothing to see here
eh, felt kinda too edgy/dark maybe, didn't pay that close attention to the lyrics
Too edgy
Ni fu ni fa
No le encuentro el interés.
I wish I could say I liked it more because of how much it influenced the artists I like and its cult status. (maybe a bunch more listens needed) but I don't find myself drawn to it.
nah...
Don’t get it
This album would have really spoken to me when I was an emotionally unstable teenager. Fortunately, I am stable and a grownup, and the darkness and angst come across weak.
64/1001 2/5
Tough listen when you’re sad.
Nothing to see here folks
This didn’t do it for me 2*
For some reason I've listened to this album a lot due to various recommendations. Never does it for me...
2 - I get why this has the cult following that it does, and it has the potential to be something I quite like, but I ended up just being bored a lot of the time. The tracks are pretty long and they don't really change that much throughout their run time. I also wasn't crazy about the vocals, especially when he started actually singing. It's cool that this album clicks for so many people, because obviously a lot of people see something special in it. I also didn't find it scary or unnerving like a lot of people, but I listened to this during the day, so maybe it'd be a different story at night. I didn't think I'd love this album anyway, based on the genres.
Could not get into this album.
Best song - Breadcrumb Trail
So boring
Not for me particularly
Bro who was high when they wrote this shit?
This album is really going to recycle songs with almost 0 variation onto disc two and act like it’s doubling its contribution? Lame
In the same way that I wouldn't want to be in some canyon river with these four boys, I felt the same uneasyness listening to these songs. Only because they seem very dour and depressing. That doesn't make them bad, I just didn't really connect.
Boring album with one or two ok-ish songs but doesn't redeem it at all. 2 stars.
An old coworker told me to listen to this album, stating its the best stuff that came out of the 90s, and should have been far more successful than bands like Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc. Needless to say, I was excited to finally sit down and exam this album. Slint is definitely not a house hold name. And when someone claims a band is this good, and still not well known, can go both ways. Either they're shit and there is a reason why no one knows about them, or something bigger just happened to eclipse them from the lime light. This album was alright. It's not amazing in any sense. It's like grunge meets shoe gaze meets post rock? It's a bit all over the place. Musically, it is interesting - some odd time signatures and weird structures that one could argue them being labeled as Math Rock. My favorite songs are Breadcrumb Trail and Good Morning, Captain. The second song, Nosferatu Man, has a guitar riff that sounds very close to Billy Howerdel's iconic riff in the song Pet on A Perfect Circle's Thirteenth Step album. I wonder if Howerdel was inspired by this? Or perhaps just ripped it off. It's very similar. Lyrically, it's garbage. Not only in words, but in melody and stylistically. Far too much much quiet spoken word. The one song where he sings, is kind of nasally and gives off a depressing woe is me feel. The best vocal performance are I. The two aforementioned songs that are my favourite. I read thwt this album was recorded in 4 days. And the lyrics were written while in studio. This explains the piss poor lyrics, and ideas revolving around the vocal choices. This album definitely deserves to be where it is in music history with an under ground, cult following. For its time, they were doing things most bands weren't doing, and that is admirable and I see the appeal. I just think it wasn't as well executed in the way my old coworker claimed it to be.
I can hear it's influence on the era, but it's a horrible mixing job and often feels confused and a little lost.
Pretty decent
I expected more.
ok interesting intro.. it's still going. Strikes me as one of those albums pretentious people will say you just don't get it when in reality it's just annoying.
Not one I would reach for.
Too much grunge, not enough range
Dissonant, dark instrumentals, spoken lyrics. Avant-garde.
One of the most frustrating albums I've gotten yet. The instrumentation and arrangements were fantastic, but... the lead singer mumble talking on every track was a poor decision. It didn't help that his voice was so low in the mix I could barely make out what he was saying. The few times he did try to sing or scream, the results were not impressive. 2 wasted potentials out of 5
I’m not sure I like the sound of Slint. I don’t think I’ve heard them before, but that word feels a bit off and I don’t know why. Apple Music lists them as alternative, which can either be a great thing or a terrible thing. Let’s listen and find out! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Breadcrumb Trail What an odd album. Imagine your typical 90s alt rock with the overly distorted guitars, but then the apathetic singing is taken up a notch into apathetic spoken word. My opinion on this album went up and down for the duration, but it did end on a low note as the last track is simply fifteen minutes of ambient outside noise. Why? Not a clue. It was interesting to hear, but I doubt I’ll be returning.
Kind of blah
Not a fan.
C’est comme écouter de l’air, mais de l’air qui pue
Not my thing
i find it rather boring
možda da sam na heroinu
Noisy
Meh, nada interesante, rock de fondo sin ganas
Eh. It was ok. I can see how it influenced some later bands, but not going to rate it very high on my list
Post-rock. Tostonazo. Un 2.
Never heard of this one, so no preconceived notions one way or another. It's very grungy. I liked the vibe in a couple songs, I think. I'm not really a fan of the tracks that use talking instead of singing. DNF
Boring. Horribly delivered vocals. Every now and then there's a moment when it all sounds good. The rest is mud.
No idea of the idea of such music...
Ok. This is the 36th album I’ve received. Out of those 36, only 3 have been by women (Lady Soul, ArchAndroid, and Little Earthquakes). I’ve had to listen to a barrage of boring dad rock albums or uninteresting 90s alt-rock albums by “edgy” male artists (like this one). For every 5th boring ass album by a male artist I get, I’ll write a companion review for an album by a female artist that’s not on this list. I give Spiderland a 2. It’s not something I’d want to listen to again, and nothing about it stood out to me, but I didn’t hate it. Today, I’m also gonna review Whitney Houston’s self-titled debut from 1985. I was familiar with classics like “How Will I Know”, “Greatest Love of All”, and “Saving All My Love for You.” I have to admit, I’m ok with Whitney’s dance pop and quiet storm songs from the 80’s but I prefer her R&B sound from the 90’s (think the Bodyguard soundtrack and My Love is Your Love). Of the songs I hadn’t heard before, I really liked Thinking About You. Take Good Care of My Heart is also pretty good. This album suffers from being made in the 80’s and having bland and dated 80’s production. But Whitney’s voice is so beautiful even on her first album so I’m giving it a 4. Reasons why Whitney Houston (1985) should’ve been on the 1001 list: besides being the introduction to one of the best singers in all of recorded music, it was the first album by a female artist to reach number 1 on the Billboard year end chart. It was also the best selling solo album by a Black woman in history (until Mariah Carey broke the record with Music Box in 1993). I don’t think a Whitney Houston album even appears on this list which would be shocking if I didn’t already know that this list has a strong rock bias (and Robert Dimery admits this in the book).
The first 2 songs were identical and there was too much dissonant talking but the later tracks weren't that bad (when they didn't sing) and actually had good backing instrumentation. Reminds me of bits of radiohead and binding of isaac soundtrack. Fitting for zombie movies. Again, I can't emphasise enough, when they don't sing they're ok.
not my vibe, didn't really get it maybe
This was kinda whack
My kind of music... it just wasn't done very well. Quite samey.
Ihme kähinää. Ei ollut mua varten yhtään. 2/5
Favourite songs: Nosferatu Man Least favourite songs: "Don, Aman" 2/5
There's a few nuggets of gold in this insanely overrated turd.
Post rock, med en ambient, tense vibe, lidt Radiohead-ish
Not really my thing but there was a bop or two. Buc-ees tee came today, absolute banger shirt. Had a pretty good day today, not much happened but I felt good talking to people.
Felt almost demonic couldn’t finish it but might come back later
Early 90s grungey industrial -- not really my jam.
Incredibly boring
Slow and steady. Not my style but I’m sure their fans don’t mind.
Went back for a 2nd listen, but there won't be a 3rd
Interesting to hear the early stages of post-rock, which I know more from later successors (esp Mogwai). But there's something a bit adolescent about the vocals, in particular - this would have been a much much stronger album if wholly instrumental.
2*
This sounds like some kind of early punk, but the mixing on this album isn't good. The instrumentals are so much louder than the vocals, it makes it difficult to understand anything. Maybe this is a good album, I wouldn't be able to tell you.
Meh.
Some of the spoken word sections felt a bit pretentious and started getting annoying but overall was an ok listen, not something I'll be going back to.
