ace of spades is the best part tbh but it does rock
“Who’d win in a wrestling match, Lemmy or god?” “Lemmy?” “god?” “Wrong d*ckhead. Trick question. Lemmy IS god” -airheads
Motörhead were famously one of the hardest working heavy metal bands of all time, touring relentlessly with a dressing room booze rider of heroic proportions. Traditionally the Hammersmith Odeon would be the last gig on the tour, but ironically on this 1981 outing they didn’t play there, so presumably they were very tired by the end. Anyhoo, this album does what it says on the tin. An absolutely blistering live set, starting with the iconic Ace of Spades and ending with Motörhead. There’s minimal banter between the tracks - just the name of the song and a quick dedication, and any crowd noise is not audible during the music. If you want live heavy metal, then this is the album for you.
Great album, will most likely listen to a bit more
3.5
I've seen Motörhead live more than once and live their music so the songs aren't new to me. Having a live album on this list wasn't something I expected though. The quality of a live performance from 1981 is extremely good and the crowd yelling along adds to the feeling. The album is great, the band sounds just as good as when I saw them 20+ years later.

Love the energy, this does exactly what my some of favorite live albums do, catch the spirit of their live shows while highlight the best of their material to that point. It helps my appreciation that I'm at least a passive fan of Motörhead. I really don't own any of their albums, but this is seriously one I should have in my collection. (9.45) ★★★★½**
I'm a notorious hater of metal, but Motorhead is cool . They avoid the pitfalls of a lot of metal bands -- they don't have a guitarist who sounds like like he's trying to impress someone at Guitar Center, their singer doesn't sound like he's auditioning for the role of a possessed person in a horror movie, and their lyrics weren't written by the dungeon master in a D&D tournament. Their songs are tight and economical, too. They're like the Ramones of metal. This is a great live set. All killer, no filler. 4.5 stars.
A most excellent live document of Motörhead. At their thrashy, growlin’, high-octane, rockin’ best. Has a set list which features all their most loved tunes such as Ace Of Spades… and others. My favourite one on here is probably Aces Of Spades.
Not a Motörhead connaisseur, or one of leather, bike rock in general but this simply kicks ass and runs circles around most of all other one trick bands, looking at much of punk here.
FT
Album 144 out of about 1,000: I finally have my first ACTUAL metal album I cannot believe it. (I am not counting Led Zeppelin or fucking Kid Rock as metal) The album itself is pretty good because I see it as a sort of "best hits" for Motörhead as it features a lot of my favourites on here. The thing with Motörhead is I don't often find myself in the mood for them. Not to say they are bad by any means, just there are better bands out there. I probably would give this a 3 under normal circumstances but compared to what I've already rated 3 I think it's better than those. Listening to the 40 minute version rather than the 2 hour one probably helped too
Admittedly, I'm usually not a huge fan of heavy metal, but I do love live albums.
This is a great listen.
The pleasure is to play. Makes no difference what you say.
a winning hand
Fantastic album. Great energy. What live shows these must have been. The band that created thrash metal, combining the energy and speed of punk with the instrumentation and heaviness of metal. This was the classic lineup playing in England. Very enjoyable album with the only drawback being the production but this does add to the heavy sound. Good music for energy! Worth listening to again and again
Who would win in a wrestling match, Lemmy, or God? I know some people don't like live albums, but it kind of adds to the rawness of Motorhead, on my opinion.
Fuck. Yes. No frills, just straight to the point, well played rock and roll. 4/5 Will listen again
One dimensional greatness
Wow this fucking rocks. I wish I could have seen it live. The recording quality leaves something to be desired. Great live album.
Som inkarneret live-album hater er jeg nødt til at sige at det her fucking rocks. Motörhead giver bedre mening for mig nu end nogensinde før (og jeg har set dem live, men det var nok 30 år for sent)
The fact that this is a live album does a disservice to Motörhead. But the heavy riffs, the iconic sound of Lemmy's voice, and the sheer attitude dripping off this album makes it still pretty good.
Perhaps the better segment of the black-tee-boomer rock. The sound stradles a nice balance with good punch without becoming dry. It does seem like they have to try really hard to not play ace of spades every time.
Ace of Spades 4.4 Stay Clean 4 Metropolis 4.1 The Hammer 3.6 Iron Horse/Born to Lose 4 No Class 3.7 Overkill 4 (We Are) The Road Crew 4.1 Capricorn 4 Bomber 3.8 Motörhead 3.6 Score: 3.936363636
Previously rated: Ace of Spades (4/5) ********************** Like the other album, it definitely rocks. Motörhead will never be one of my favorites because of how rough the vocals are, but they are OK in small doses. (I didn't listen to the extended or deluxe versions and probably won't.) Ace of Spades is a classic like it was on Ace of Spades. The Hammer sounds like Ace of Spades like it did on Ace of Spades. So the repetition is one issue I have having both albums here, but still, like I said it rocks pretty hard.
I'm not usually a huge fan of live albums, but... Motörhead!
I’m not the biggest fan of live albums in general unless there’s something different the live show is doing (unplugged for example). Overall this is a solid show, audio is clear. Obviously Motörhead are legendary.
Fun rock album. Best album in a while 4.5
Loud and in your face from front to back. A really great live album, but I'd still prefer to listen to the studio recordings.
End-to-end Ace of Spades clones, TBH. Quite enjoyable.
Motorhead is the embodiment of rock n roll. Not usually a big fan of live albums but this is an exception. Band is tight and production is clean but still raw.
Not the best recording quality and most Motörhead song are pretty similar. But it’s still a great album that deserves to be cranked up
A lot of the songs followed the same formula, but I have to admit that I enjoyed listening to this one though I didn't think I would.
This wasn't at all what I was expecting. I thought Motorhead was more like Metallica. This was way more in the vein of punk rock. Much more to my tastes.
OK album. Not my cup of tea though.
I’ve come to the conclusion that metal is clearly best experienced live. Really liked this album but probably wouldn’t have as much of a recorded album.
Great stuff. Proper old school.
4/5. Love me some Motorhead, and live songs just fits the bill. The louder the better and this throws everything into the mix, everything is at 11. Lemmy is screaming in every song and yet he seems the quietest part of each song. The album front to back is at full speed and its over before you realize. It feels like a greatest hits, especially with the bonus tracks on the expanded version. There are some songs to be fair, that do feel unneeded and sound similar to other songs. It is still a great live album, just need to listen with good head phones or in the car and you will not be disappointed, maybe skip a song or two. Best Song: Overkill, Capricorn, Motorhead
What you see is what you get from Motorhead. Will it be dynamic? No. Will it blow you away with songcraft? Probably not. Is it a master class in consistency? Yes, it is. Top to bottom, this band is fast, tight, and powerful. If you don't love fast, loud music, this album won't be for you. But the execution of the formula is as good as any band has ever done. Small deductions offered for a small handful egregiously sloppy sound edits.
Yeah this was good. Can say I’m a fan of Motörhead. Admittedly they have a distinctive sound but that’s not bad
De band speelt geweldig, vette nummers, maar het is wel matig opgenomen. Daarnaast een live album
A ripping good time.
Rockin
Motörhead have always been interesting to me. Lemmy is painted as the biggest badass in rock history, a tough motherfucker who'd bite your head off if you so much as look at him the wrong way. But their music, by today's standard, isn't as heavy as I ever expect it to be. It has as much in common with any classic rock album as it does with any metal album, with riffs and hooks a plenty. It's downright listenable, and I sure did enjoy this listen. They've got lots of energy, no doubt about it, and they play fast and hard. But you could put this on while having a few beers on the deck on a sunny day. And that's exactly where my metal tastes lie.
Rzadko słucham albumów koncertowych. Ten jest dobry bardzo. 4/5
pretty good
Loud, fast metal. This is pretty awesome.
I'm not even really a fan of Motörhead, but they do have enough hits to fill out a show, and the live energy is through the roof.
poor lemmy
Don't ask me why Lemmy gets a pass, he just does. The influence on King Gizz's Infest The Rats Nest is ridiculous.
Actually quite enjoyed this. It’s Motörhead being Motörhead, no surprises or revelations but a solid live album that bottles that legendary thunder and ear crushing audial battery of the classic line up.
I really do enjoy motorhead tbh, I enjoyed this one especially because it had Hammersmith in the name
Motörhead is great! Favorite tracks: Ace of Spades, Iron Horse
Not big on live recorded music. It’s lacking the actual feeling of being there. But this is Motörhead so it’s still good
The definition of Metal. The recording value on this is just superb.
Just great
I should like it more but Motorhead have never been a huge favorite. Once you've heard Ace of Spades you feel like you've heard a lot of this. Some really good solos though (eg, on Overkill) and the energy is obviously there. I'm digging the more midpaced groove on Metropolis too. Can't give it less than a 4 for sheer energy.
Badass head banging awesomeness. Love the live energy and lively tunes.

I generally don't like live albums, but there are exceptions and this is one of them. It captures the energy of Motorhead really well, and it sounds great. You'd think they would back themselves into a corner by starting off with Ace of Spades, but the album is so consistently good, I never worried about it 4/5
Rock!
What is there to say... except "can't believe I hadn't listened to this album before. AMAZING ENERGY, that's what you get from this album, if several of the songs are almost carbon-copies of The Ace of Spades!
Who would win in a fight: Lemmy or God? This sounds real clean for a live album and acts as a greatest hits. Simple classic metal.
Motorhead is certainly a three-piece to be reckoned with. The exuberant and relentless energy on most of the songs here is undeniable to the point where it overflows to even some slower tracks like 'Iron Horse' (which isn't even conventionally "slow" per se). The speed matches the viscerality levels of most hardcore punk records (most evident in the song 'No Class'), and the fuzzier nature of the live recording makes both the guitar and bass feel like a wall of constant haze over these pummeling drums. Vocally speaking, Lemmy Kilmister is the perfect example of a vocalist who can be potent without needing to overpower the rest of the instruments. His vocals are lowkey, slurred, and raspy yet they manage to pierce through the mix effortlessly - helped by a set of consistently puzzling yet engaging lyrics. I don't know why but I love the more direct ode to his roadcrew on the aptly titled "(We Are) The Roadcrew" - maybe my favorite song here. Live performances like this must've been incredible to attend, but this recording still captures most of the chemistry and fire ignited on the day. I haven't listened to any Motorhead albums before this one so this was a great introduction.
blassic
great album. the Bassist is incredible.
At some level this doesn't seem fair. The energy of a live recording is pretty awesome, and clearly they get to pick the best material from their first 5 albums to put together a tight 11 track set. There's a lot of really strong songs here, Ace of Spades being the obvious hit, but i enjoyed Iron Horse, Overkill and Road Crew quite a lot as well. Biggest complaint is the recording seems a bit muddy, i would have loved it to be brighter with a bit more fidelity.
I think Motorhead is cool, and Ace of Spades is great, Lemmy is incredible... but this recording is not the best. The performance is pretty good though. If I'm being honest, this is more in line with that MC5 album... I'm thinking a 3.5 as much as I wish it was higher. If the recording was better I might bump it up... but it's all pretty muddy and repetitive.
Live album with great energy despite the so-so mix. Faves: Ace of Spades, Iron Horse/Born To Lose, Bomber, and Motorhead.
Fun album and great recording. Always loved Motorhead and Lemmy.
Motörhead definitely don’t have the most variety in their songwriting, but their sound here is so good.
Great speed metal. Later refined and tamed by Metallica. This is a monumental shift in rock. RIP Lemmy!
Riding off of the success of Ace of Spaces, Motorhead (or their label) takes the opportunity to record a live album. This is a blistering live recording, in that they are playing so much faster here than on the studio recordings. Motorhead had developed a reputation of being fast and loud by this point, so of course the live album perfectly encompasses those qualities in spades. From the needle drop, the band bursts into a fury of sound with their bonafide hit Ace of Spades. At no point does the band let up, and that's for the best. This is the way that Motorhead was meant to be heard. Studio records kind of neuter the raw power that they had fostered in the late '70s and early '80s. Every punk and metal band can only aspire to a sliver of the sound that Motorhead had at that time; they were just that damn good.
epic live metal
Fast and Loud.
It's Motorhead, so it's already got that in its favor. It's definitely one of the fastest live albums I've ever heard, seriously coming close to breaking the land speed record. I also think it sticks around just long enjoy it and not have it drag on. All of this is heavily dependant on whether you like or dislike Motorhead. In my opinion, they're one of the finest rock and roll bands to have ever existed. Favorite tracks: "Overkill", "Bomber", "We Are the Roadcrew", "Stay Clean"
not the best love album ( The Who Live at Leeds is # 1 imho) but this will do in a pinch. pretty much the oroginators of speed metal and in fine form on this album. Rest in Power Lemmy.
There is no one like Lemmy. RIP. Great album, love that it is live. I agree with most of the other reviews that the songs all kind of sound the same, but you know what you are getting into with Motorhead. Top notch!
RIP Lemmy. Coming out strong with Ace of Spades. The Who live album was surprising how clean it was. This is... not clean. But it works for Motorhead.
Motörhead definitely deserves a spot on this list, and I keep going back and forth in my head about whether or not if it HAS to be only 1 entry on the list, if a live album is the best representation. Motörhead was famously an amazing band live, with unending energy. I think I got to see them once in New Jersey at some point around 2008-2013 but I can't totally recall, which is a shame since Lemmy passed in 2015 and they apparently won't ever tour again under that name without him. Lemmy is amazing, I mean I think the first "meme" I ever heard in my life was from the movie Airheads when someone asks "Who would win in a wrestling match, Lemmy or God? Trick question, Lemmy IS God!". That was funny silly shit that young headbangers would say to eachother as a rite of passage. A little bit of a secret handshake if you will. Do you know the answer to that question? Yea you're cool. Yea you can wear that Motörhead shirt and won't be told to take it off. All that being said, this album rocks. Motörhead has energy for days and is one of the most fun hard rock bands ever. It's amazing that you can still get melody and inflection and catchy hooks from Lemmy's grizzled ogre boom he called a voice. It's a strong 4/5 for me.
excellent whats not to love about lemmy and motorhead
Impressive speed. I just can't take this much headbanging in one sitting.
Prime years of Motörhead. Typically Don’t love live even when I’m a huge fan, can’t deny how tight the band sounds here.
Rockin! Enjoyed this way more than expected. The sound quality is a little lacking but I understand this was 1981. You have the feeling of being there an the speed and energy of the music is incredible.
Legendary band, but they're a one trick pony. Ace Of Spades, Overkill, Bomber and Motorhead are all great songs but kind of boil down to the same stuff. The band deserves the credit, but it's not an essential live album, in my opinion. Standout tracks: Ace Of Spades, The Hammer, Overkill, (We Are) The Road Crew, Bomber, Motorhead 8 out of 10
Standard Motorhead stuff - great in short doses to blow away the cobwebs, but not to listen to for very long. There almost no variation, so even in the gym, it gets repetitive very quickly.
Fantastic thrash rock album. If I'd heard this when it came out, my musical tastes might've been greatly altered.
Spotless performance by one of the most influential.bands ever
I love this. I didn't really start to listen to this style music until I was in my 40s, and even now, 25 years later it still feels really good to listen to.
My guess is this is one of the best examples of the type; it’s just not anything I was interested in…seems to be a lot of frustration and anger in there, much like punk and some New Wave; it’s just a different form of expression
Mindless, directionless energy. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I mean, it's Lemmy. What more can you WANT? I like the authenticity of a live album. Although many were overdubbed (which only recently I found out about), this one was not: "It still sounds good to me… We were in the middle of a 53-show tour, so by that time we were on automatic. We were tight, and you can hear that on the record… There are mistakes on there. There are always mistakes on a live album… that's life. Life ain't perfect, and I'm no different. I think I overdubbed a couple of lines of vocals on Hammersmith, but there's no false songs." -- Lemmy. The expanded version gives you the feel of a concert. I can't imagine a Motorhead concert going much more than like 90 minutes. Everyone would be exhausted. Still, the album was fun. And Lemmy is still God.
Solid
I've never listened to much Motorhead outside of "The Ace of Spades", and yes it all sounds similar, but it never occurred to me that Motorhead was making this music in the mid-70s. This is arguably the birth of thrash metal, almost a decade before Metallica's first album. Good live version of Motorhead's material.
I hadn't really listened to much of these guys but this show sounded awesome. More punk than expected. Will definitely be checking out more from them.
A solid hour+ of classic Motorhead tunes. RIP Lemmy.
Not the best live album and the quality of the record is so-so. The good parts are that it's Motörhead and that the energy is insane as expected.
A quick muscular set
START OF ALBUM: I love Motorhead as a "thing", an ideal, a mythical representation of what rock 'n' roll should be, but I don't really listen to them enough. I remember listening to an album of theirs whilst walking along on a hot summers day a few years ago and being surprised at (1) how good / catchy it all was, and, (2) that they are more blues / rock than heavy metal. Okay, that might be a little bit of stretch. But for all the image of being the loudest band in the world and so heavy metal, "everything louder than everything else," etc, you couldn't really classify the music as thrash or death metal or anything. I think it sits nicely alongside bands like Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy. Anyway, a live album is sort of an excuse to have a "best of" compilation isn't it? So this must be all their best songs at the time, I imagine... END OF ALBUM: ...Okay, I've finished listening now and liked 9 songs out of 18, which is exactly half. The others seemed a bit samey. I was thinking back to my teenage years of getting into music and guitar and theorising that this album would be best listened to in the summer sun whilst smoking a cigarette (which I don't smoke anymore). It reminded me of what rock was about, simpler times, etc etc. And then the song "jailbait" came on and made me feel very uncomfortable. But still, ugh.
Not my cup of tea, but a decent heavy metal live
Motörhead play punk and funk influenced metal for the drunks and the rebellious ones. Lemmy’s voice is half-singy and half-screamy and makes for the perfect jolt of energy in a live setting. This makes this live album a gem in my eyes. If I could, I would’ve seen Motörhead live in the 80s, much to my dad’s dismay. 4.3/5 Favorite Track: Stay Clean Least Favorite: Iron Horse
I mean it's Motörhead live. If you like them you'll like this album if you don't then you won't. It's not that deep
Ovo nije loše.
Really good, would have loved to have seen this live
Motörhead has Ace of Spades and variations on Ace of Spades. And that's ok! If you've got it, flaunt it.
I wouldn't call myself a huge Motorhead fan, I like Ace of Spades, but like every other song of theirs kinda just sounds the same but less good (a bit reductive, I know). But I have to say, I actually quite liked this live album. Explosive, energetic performances really elevate a lot of these songs. 3.5/5
Motörhead are loud. Motörhead are fast. It is that speed and that volume that are 100% why this love album experience works. The band sounds studio great here and that’s a high compliment since it was recorded over 5 different U.K. shows. Blisters and pops with sound and fury. A damn fine metal album.
The Metal! This concert would have been awesome to be at
Apparently the working title for this album was originally “Secondhand Smoke & Tinnitis” It doesn’t get much heavier or louder than this.
I wasn't encouraged at the start with ace of spades sounding mostly identical to the album version, but my fears were quickly laid to rest as the next 40 minutes were everything a live rock album should be. Kinetic, fun, and loud. Getting hammered and going to this concert in 1981 had to be a life-changing experience as in you either had tons of fun innocently jamming out or got the shit kicked out of you during one of the epic guitar solos. Motorhead was probably my favorite since it was the original closer of the album and they went all out. Plus, the album was good enough to make me want to listen to the expanded edition songs which is always a good sign.
I think I would have like it more if it wasn't live
Listened Before? N An awesome live performance by a classic metal god? During their prime? Yes please. I felt like I was in the crowd, banging my head in '81. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Ace of Spades
Reminds me quite a bit of the Stooges, really scuzzy sound. Ace of Spades is a bit played out and the slower tracks don't work quite as well, but this is largely great. The hard boogie of Over the Top at the end the highlight for me
Really enjoyed. Great voice and excellent tempo and instrumentation. Sounded amazing for a live recording.
Pretty much all their main hits. A few songs show the way live albums are inferior but a well made and good length live album.
alfa strong 4. some filler.
Pretty Alr. Motörhead is always a treat
Brilliant
The music is fine but listening to a live album from over 40 years ago just doesn't have the same luster as it once did. Poor choppy quality ruins what is essentially a greatest hits rock n roll/metal album.
Maybe I'm just in a bad mood today, but I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would given the reviews above. Like I said when we had the studio Motorhead album on it, they've only got one trick. It's a good trick, and I'd challenge anyone to not get lifted by Ace of Spades, but the rest of it does get a bit formulaic and mostly one paced. Again, it's a good pace, full of energy, but it does make it all sound really similar. Glad they kept it to 40 minutes though, it is a really good cut of what presumably must've been a much longer set? And it ended pretty well - the air raid sirens and plane noises leading into the last track pumped up the ambience, pulling it up to a 4.
I'm not a big fan of live albums. And especially on a '1001' albums list do live albums feel like glorified 'best of's' But I'll make one exception for this loud, energetic, unrelenting beast of an album. What a power.
This is probably the only way to listen to motorhead.
Their songs might sound similar, but I like them.
Wish I'd seen Motorhead live.
i think the liveness of this album gives it a nice garage vibe to some already well established music, I can see some inspiration that king gizzard has taken from here for more than a couple of their songs/a;bums, thats for sure,
Toffe live, maar Motörhead is zo'n band waarvan alle nummers heel hard op elkaar lijken. Ik snap hoe legendarisch ze zijn, maar daar krijgt deze toch een minpunt voor
Pretty nice sounding considering how loud they were. I’m far more inclined to call them a punk band after listening all the way through.
Today I learned that the song No Sleep till Brooklyn is a nod to the title of this album.
Live albums always seem to fall into two categories. Single listen novelties, or a way to listen to music in a raw non-overproduced form. This is the latter. Recording quality is just high enough to enjoy while you get the feel of the energy of the live performance. It still amazes me that I’d never heard much of Motörhead before my 30s, especially given they’ve influenced a lot of the music I’ve listened to all my life.
Energy. Love it.
My one regret, ok one of many, is that I never got to see Motörhead live. At least this album lets me get some idea what it was like.
Great live album with plenty of energy and ramps up the heaviness just a little compared to the studio versions. It would be perfect if the live versions were more different but the arrangements are so similar it almost feels like just a compilation. Perfect song selection though.
The stitches are rather obvious for an 80s live album, but I'm easily swayed by the spectacle of the thing. Fairly so, with the band (mostly) maintaining a blistering pace, no studio precision, plenty of heat. The mess is coming from every direction, but it's a blanket of tunes, and whatever the stitching disrupts, it reveals the breath-long breaks providing just enough recovery time.
Genre: Heavy Metal Review: A small dose of Motörhead every day is the secret to a long and happy life. This live album has it all - classic hits, rocking jives and Lemmy's unparalleled metallic growl. Rating: 8/10
RIP Lemmy. High energy classic.
Lemmy was awesome - I even have his autobiography. But this is about the music. Not my favorite genre, but this is a great selection for fans of Motorhead. Motorhead live was powerful, and the greatest hits set hits all of the highlights. The pacing is only topped by the Ramones. Like the best live releases, this is also a time capsule for an era. I can't believe this is 40 plus years old, but, even today, peak Motorhead is very formidable.
I love Motorhead but they shouldn't have live albums in here when they also have studio albums with the same tracks. This is a great album but it's kinda wasting space here. 4/5.
A pretty good album. I like the studio versions better though
never got into motorhead much but i like their live sound
Brings back the excellent documentary about Lemmy. Entertaining story and good music that was too big for me in the 80s but now I enjoy it, good fun, almost comedic music, I see it as fun not serious rock now, to listen to with a wry smile. This guy is an icon... He looks and acts like a philosophical Roady, living for the moment, and the poker machine at the end of the bar ...and sex with his groupies and bourbon slacker life on the road ... Other will describe this better and. Have more attachment to it... Not my top album but the sound is defining for the times ...
Just the other day my group was complaining about too many slow and boring albums recently. And now, Motorhead! Live! Motorhead were a one trick pony, really, but what a trick it is! It's loud and fast and raucous and funny and noisy, but mostly loud and fast. I love that 'Capricorn' is introduced as a slow song (by Motorhead standards). They only really play variants on two different riffs, and Fast Eddie only knows one solo, and all the lyrics are interchangeable (and certainly not Shakespeare), but I find this album fun. Unlike most of the NWOBHM, this doesn't take itself too seriously (case in point; "We are the road crew"). This is Motorhead at the height of their powers, doing their thing. It's rougher than their studio recordings, which just heightens the raw rock and roll nature of their (limited) oeuvre. Truth be told, this album really just "Ace of Spades" at the beginning and "Motorhead" at the end, and a bunch of stuff in the middle. Fun, loud, noisy and doesn't outstay it's welcome. This is the one Motorhead album that I actually play, because it is all the best things about Motorhead.
This album is Ace of Spades followed by an hour and a half of might-as-well-be-Ace-of-Spades. Might listen again.
This band has been a pleasant surprise in this list - always heard about them, never really listened. Surprised to find I like it pretty well. Just top tier authentic hard rock and roll. There's a no-nonsense sensibility to the lyrics I like: I'm self-destructive, and I know how that's going to turn out. Of course it ends up with the line-up on this live album all dead pretty early into their elder years, but there you go. Signing is the one weaker point: it's done with gusto and it fits the material, but at album length the limitations and thin range start to detract somewhat from the overall experience.
LP
Great players
Potente!
Haha, zeker een classic
Metall, bisschen blues vibe, eigl. nice
I saw Motorhead on this tour and had this album too. It is a great live album and showcases Motorhead at their best, with the classic line-up of Lemmy, Philthy Phil and Fast Eddie (all RIP sadly). All the classics are here - Ace of Spades, Bomber, Overkill, Motorhead - and some good supporting numbers too - Metropolis, We are the Roadcrew, No Class, particularly.
Blistering, intense and relentless rock'n'roll - Ace of Spades, Bomber, Iron Horse, Motörhead - all kick ass here - performed to perfection. Quite a rare thing, at least I don't think I ever came across it before, but a song dedicated to the Road Crew is awesome. It is what separates the real bands from the made up ones. A classic.
Some real classics here.
Great metal album
The recording quality is more than listenable for a live album from the early 80s. Solid performances and a good selection of songs.
Wish I'd seen them live, classic album!
Excellent live album. I like how it jumps immediately into "Ace of Spades." No time for chatter, just rock. This is peak Motörhead, all muscle, no fat, and really as good as anything they've done in the studio. Enjoyed it. Fave Songs: Ace of Spades, The Hammer, Bomber, Motörhead, (We Are) The Road Crew, Capricorn
Found some new (for me) solid Motorhead songs. Looking forward to some studio albums.
Great
Relentless. Driving beats, gruff voice of Lemmy. From the initial chords, could be no other band. What a gret live album.
Great live albums. Lots of energy and peak Motörhead!
Great live album
Nice.
4.1 - A kick-ass live recording that makes me wish I was there. The momentum of this performance is staggering.
3.75
first listen some great hardcore blues
I never listened a lot to Motorhead, but this album really never lets you down. It's all sort of this thundering and very tightly held together mess. If you wanted to make a song that sounded like a hungover guy who hadn't showered in a week running from the law on a Harley that was about to fall apart, this is what that would sound like.
Se faire rouler dessus pendant 40 minutes Prefs: Ace of Spades, Stay Clean, The Hammer, No Class, Overkill, (We Are) The Road Crew, Bomber, Motörhead Moins pref: Iron Horse/Born To Lose
Exactly what you'd expect from heavy rock royalty. Grinding guitars...mental drumming...and Lemmy making your ears bleed.
Rating: 7/10
Killer live album. Absolute Rock n roll! Songs can be a bit repetitive but long live mötorhead!
maximalist glam metal energy drink headbanging with an extra hype crowd
Lemmy is a king
Fast, heavy. More punk than I thought.
Super-heavy. Hilarious how the "slow song" just drops from 150mph to, like, 90.
Lemmy ist so iconic ich liebe ihn
I enjoyed that way more than I was expecting. expecially considering how crap the recording quality is. i'd absolutely love to give it a 5 because of my enjoyment from it, but the quality of it really is a bit shit.
I actually quite it enjoyed it which is surprising. What I was expecting was a clusterfuck of black t shirts and stonewashed jeans doing rock n roll by numbers, what I got was...well I was that...but the live element made it better, which doesn't usually happen.
I once bought tickets to see Motorhead live but Lemmy died about a week after the ticket purchase. I never got to see Motorhead because Lemmy was dead. I did get a full refund on the tickets though. That's it, that's my story. I'm not as good at this as Nigel am I?
This is a banger of a live album. As I think I said with Motörhead before, I wouldn't usually listen to them but I'm happy when I do.
Como si te pasara un tren por encima...
This is the distillation of rock to it's purest essence
I was familiar with the overall sound of Motorhead and of course their best known song Ace of Spades, but never checked out their regular albums. But then again, perhaps their music is best enjoyed live (or at least through a well produced live album).
Classic live heavy metal album - and very fast!
Surprisingly great quality of recording and also the band sounding very much like in the studio. The songs are all very similar but despite that, I couldn't help but to nod along and enjoy the album which is why I'm going to bump this up to a 4
De lo mejor que he escuchado en vivo!
Rude and raucous - Ace of Spades is the essence of rock. Enjoyed this one.
Like being repeatedly pummelled round the head with a sledgehammer. But. Also......Oddly charming and enjoyable. Released the same year that Metallica formed. Kill 'em All came a couple of years later. There's a lot of Motorhead in early Metallica.
I've seen Motorhead a couple of times, and they've been good, but only on big stages at festivals in the middle of the afternoon. This makes me wish I'd seen them indoors at one of their own shows. Great live performances. High energy, tight playing, and a great crowd reaction, all brilliantly captured on this recording. Couldn't really want more from a live album. The performance is so good that I can't tell if the opening track, Ace of Spades, is the recording that everybody knows, or if this performance is note perfect to the studio version. 4/5
This album is an absolute blast - this is not an album to work to or travel to or read to or cook to or relax to but if you're willing to just focus and give in to the relentless power, speed, volume and energy this is going to put a smile on your face. Lemmy is 100% charisma, surging his way through track after track like he's running and yelling his way out of (or into?) hell.
Ace of Spades is a classic. Musically, this is straight thrash, get up and go, but it's Lemmy's gravelly voice that really catapults this into badass territory. The live album is absolutely amazing and brings all the feelings of being in a dirty, sweat filled stinky crowd totally engulfed in the moment and it's what really makes this album an exhilarating, rowdy bender. Lemmy, famous for his love of amphetamines is making a good show of it here.
Un disc en directe de referència, punt àlgid en la carrera de la banda i resum immillorable dels seus primers discos, tots ells incontestables. Per reviure'l un cop i un altre
Nice! This was full of energy and kept me going during busy times. I didn't have many standouts in particular, and couldn't be bothered to listened to the bonus tracks (version on Spotify is hella long) but still a good album.
8/10 I didn't listen to the deluxe edition, just the original 40 minute release, but it was really good and I think I would've liked it less had it gone on longer.
very fun, mh rocks
Was kinda cool, really good set.
Loud and in your face. Just the way it should be. My only knock is it never felt like a complete set as it was more a compilation
So much energy brought live, I just wish the recording was a little clearer. To be expected for a live Motorhead album though.
Heavy sound, respect
My main thought listening to this was "goddamn, that must have been a fun show." it ran a bit together for me towards the end, but a good listen.
Como si te pasara un tren por encima...
I was reserved when seeing another live album. I don't typically find them appealing with bad mixing/recording. This one was different. It sounded great. Here was a band who are all dead today but back then they were on the verge of breaking up and having one stretch of live shows and recordings to try to hit it big and take that next step. You hear that intensity in this performance. Only thing better would be to go back in time and attend the show live.
I will keep my consistency here... It is not fair to give a 5 star to live albums or "best of" collections... But I wish I went to this concert... Great double album!
Hah hah, more Motörhead! You know exactly what you're getting. Fave track - "Capricorn", if only for the dedication to "all the poor bastards that only get one present for both birthday and Christmas"! 😂
Drums were bonkers
Yeah that was actually very good. I was going to listen to a track or two then move on but actually played the whole album. Sounds like they were great live.
3.6
Not bad, but fuck live albums really
This isn’t my favorite thing I’ve ever listened to but let’s be clear, it rocks
A fun album to make thai curry to! Not the worst live album on here.
A double album never is a hit
The sound isn't amazing on this album. However its tremendous fun what can be heard. From start to finish one of the better rock albums
Leuk maar veel hetzelfde
I don't listen to Motorhead much, but this is a great package that has all the songs I want, like a greatest hits compilation. The live mix compresses the sound and makes it seem a little flat to me. I'd rather listen to the studio versions.
The only way to feel the noise is when it’s good and loud …. No sleep starts with what was considered the fast heaviest song ever the ace of spades . It’s fast and loud but not great . The guitar is too low in the mix A good performance of some great songs but suffers from being a live album . All I am left with is wanting to listen to the original songs Best song on it is surprisingly well are the road crew ( apart from the caring opening)
It is going to be hard to sit through the whole of this album because a) I hate live albums, and b) even if I consider myself a metalhead I've never enjoyed listening to Motorhead (or other similar bands) It ended up being better than I expected, at least the first half an hour or so, then it becomes extremely repetitive and outtakes fest.
Sure it would be great live but a little of Motorhead's songs blend into one
Good guitars and drums Nothing special about the vocals Solid rock band, nothing really memorable about this album. I had it on in the background. If it weren't for the audience cheers. I wouldn't have recognized when we were into a new song
Same songs, too long. Legends as they are
Decent from Lemmy
OKAYYYY, TWO SONGS IN, THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUTTTTTT Update: I really liked the instruments in these but the vocals on the other hand.... There was a song called Capricorn and I kinda felt like it was for me but other than that, the songs weren't particularly appealing.
- Over the top
Good plane music, also i think this genre is maybe the best for live actually as i wrote that im not sure i agree coz the more intimate live albums are great also anyway 3/5
“This is a slow one to mellow out to” cut to another wall of drums and guitar, kind of obsessed with that energy
I like the fast ones ok— that guitar of Lemmy’s can really go chugga chugga.
Frickin awesome. I don’t really love live albums and would rather listen to a Motörhead studio album.
ta bien, muy metal
I know Motörhead is cool, but their songs sound all the same to me.
I like the energy and life this live album has. 7/10 would listen again
Not really my style, but I appreciate the energy.
They certainly have a formula they like.
Solid first album
Fast, fun rock and roll. It sounds like a bootleg recording though.
I am kind of fucking with the fact that this is a live album. I’d definitely have enjoyed this more if I was a late 80s dad speeding down a Texas interstate at 120mph—but it’s high energy and I respect that.
Not exactly clean living easy listening. It went on too long, too hard, and with too much aggressive energy. I guess that's the point.
This album is way too fucking long and it all sounds the same. Stand-outs - Ace of Spades
Good cleaning music.
Started off really strong then fell off with the repetitive sound. This live album should not be included on the list but I’d be open to hearing more Motörhead in small doses.
I didn’t mind the studio Motörhead album I got in this project but I found this one very one-dimensional and hard to differentiate songs. The audio quality wasn’t great, maybe it was because I listened mainly in my car. Would rather listen to the studio stuff than revisit this one.
Motorhead is an acquired taste, even amongst rock fans, so I completely understand if someone doesn't like them. I tend to place Motorhead in a similar category as AC/DC: this is rock and roll distilled to its base form, simple songs, hard riffs, and gravelly-voiced singers. Their songs aren't complex or groundbreaking in any way, but they're fun in small doses. Everyone gravitates to 'Ace of Spades', but I preferred 'Overkill' on this live cut. I will give Lemmy credit, he sounds exactly the same live as he does on the albums. As far as live albums go, this is pretty good as there is no crowd banter, just one song introduced into the next. I'll rate this a high 3/5, as a lot of the songs sound VERY similar, I still liked them, but nothing really elevated the material past the hits.
Feel like I have heard these songs with better quality on the non-live album. 5/10
I'm not really sure why we have two Motorhead albums in this collection, especially given the overlap with "Ace of Spades", but either way I'll give full credit to them for clearly putting on a great live show night after night. Even for a metal live album, the recording/production quality isn't all that great, but you can hear how...committed...these guys were to a blistering show (so much more so than that Deep Purple live show). Much like my reaction to "Ace of Spades" (the album), I'm hard-pressed to distinguish between various songs, and didn't even really try to make out the lyrics. I'm glad, though, to have finally heard the (title) inspiration for the Beastie Boys, and give them full credit for banging their heads *so* much harder than the hair metal bands that would follow.
Love "Ace of Spades" and then it all sort of drops off for me.
not a big metal guy, but you can’t deny the energy here. yes it’s mostly the same song every time, but it didn’t start to grate on me until half an hour in
Its OK.
i enjoyed a lot of songs more than i thought,,, but 2h is simply too long and the fact it was live didn’t really help its case- they all started to sound the same towards the end
Like all the other decent live albums, this sounds like it was a good time. Favorite track: Overkill 3.5/5
2.7 I think we can all agree that live albums shouldn't be on this list. The only exception I'll allow is albums which showcase songs in a different light, or entirely new songs altogether. The Unplugged series as an example. However, yet another 70s/80s rock album, with terrible fidelity, with minimal difference to the studio version, is just not the one. "Here is a greatest hits album but it's hard to hear it clearly" is not a great sell. Cherry in the cake was actually going to save down Overkill to a playlist and then the adding was a load of nonsense chatter and shrieking. Good one guys. I like Motorhead, I've seen them live, but even I know people don't really need to hear this before they die.
Classic early metal
Overall, not a bad album. I am not a huge fan of live albums, but this wasn't too bad. The Ace of Spades is my favourite song of theirs, and the rest were alright having in the background.
This was fun. I don't think it's quite converted me to a Motorhead fan outside of a few of their singles but after this, I can see why people love them.
Every Motorhead song sounds the same to me. I have never loved them. This live album has put them.in a new light for me. The live energy is contagious and I get them a little bit more after listening to this. I bet being there live was electric.
Surprisingly enjoyable. Hard rock/heavy metal. Lead singer has a unique voice. The drums are very samey on every song. Not generally a huge fan of live albums, but this one isn’t too bad.
Heard one Motörhead song you’ve heard them all
I like when he says “thank you” at the end of a song, but it just sounds like he’s sneezing.
i liked the atmosphere that is brought form the recording
Ha meg unnskyldt. Hørte på plate en og følte at samme sangen gikk på repeat i en time. Har ingen grunn til å tror at plate to ville være annerledes. Tøft, for all del.
Det rockes hardt. Sikkert kult å være der, men lydkvaliteten er ikke helt på høyde.
Awesome, loud, good combination of metal and punk, sick as hell.
Indecipherable lyrics and the songs all sound so similar.
alright fine music: acknowledged. (⌐♠_♠)
Rocks, but it made me sad because I had multiple opportunities to see Motörhead live and didn’t take them, and that was a big mistake. This is a good live recording but it can’t possibly actually give a sense of what it sounded like in the room.
Ace of spades Puis 11 musiques identiques à mes oreilles J'ai passé un moment moment sans être marquant
This was fun. Don't know if I'd ever willingly choose to listen to it again. Very metal. Didn't dislike it though.
banger muziek ma de live irriteert mij
Great live album. Captures the Motörhead sounds with fantastic live vibes. If I close my eyes, it almost feels like it’s ‘81 and I’m in the room — almost. 3.4/5.0
It's Motorhead! I think this would have been an amazing concert to be at. Electric, engaging, entertaining. The only detractors for me are his voice and some of the guitar solos (just not my thing).
I'm not a big fan of live albums in general, but honestly this doesn't sound too much different from their albums as they're quite a raw band anyway. It does seem to be a bunch of variations of the same sort of song though. I mean, if it aint broke, and all that.
Not the best live album but some great tracks.
I actually did enjoy the album, and listen to it on repeat in the background. However, I could not tell between any one song and wasn't specifically drawn into any one of them.
Is the live version a 1001 album?
Decent, high-energy live album with great guitar tone throughout. Simple but not simplistic, Motörhead's power trio approach packs a lot of punch on this record. Only downside is the uneven quality of the songs - "Ace Of Spades" is an astounding opener but some of the other tunes pale in comparison to that track.
I simply can't stop imagining Lemmy as a Muppet character.
I wish I could have had a beer with Lemmy!
yeah it's mtotrhead if your in the mood then it's great otherwise i prefer the things they influenced more
I anticipated a lot of metal but this is really just some good old fashioned rock and roll. I appreciate that much more.
6.5/10
Even more samey than the last one. But still some decent stuff
Solid live album. And Motorhead is legendary in the rock world. Rip Lemey
Fooooda, a primeira música já me lembra meus 10 anos jogando Tony Hawk. Pqp, que sentimento bom que dá ouvir essa música. O resto do álbum é ROCK bão, mas não muito meu estilo. The Daily Telegraph rated it the best live album of all time.
This lost didn’t need a Motörhead live album but it certainly does rock hard.
Favorite Song: Ace of Spades
Good Motörhead. Live. Fast and furious a loud band and lively.
Lemmy!
Live Lemmy! They're kinda like a lo-rent British Metallica (no disrespect).
Ace of spades is good but this sound gets a bit repetitive. If you can’t get enough of this sound I am sure it is great but it just didn’t connect with me enough to tie it above 3 stars.
I did not know Brits were allowed to go off! Unfortunately a bit repetitive for much of the album. Highlights: "Ace of Spades", "Overkill"
Pretty repetitive and lengthy, but a lot of energy. Pretty conflicted about this album
I respect Motorhead but I've never really gotten overly into them, barring a handful of songs. I'll listen to them sometimes if they come up on shuffle, but I've never really sat down to specifically listen to them. I did have the fortune to see Motorhead once before Lemmy passed. That was a great experience. I'm also not usually a fan of listening to live albums. If I can watch a video, that's fine, and I love attending concerts in person. But live audio recordings rarely interest me. I'd much rather listen to a nice studio recording. This is fine. The production is OK for a live album. You can tell they're a fun live experience. It just doesn't really do much for me, like most live albums.
Motorhead isn't my jam, but the album itself isn't bad at all.
Such a good recording and album, I've already listened to it twice. High 3s.
I had low expectations for this, heavy metal in live performances. I was pleasantly surprised. Across multiple performances, Motorhead brought high energy and consistency. It's not my thing, but I appreciated the attention to detail. It was perfect for mowing the lawn.
I don’t love live albums but this was alright
Drunk and rowdy sound. Love that they credited Smirnoff and Carlsburg for the rambunctiousness of the album.
This is okay. I'm usually not one for lyrics, but boy these are just so boring. Or at least they were to me. The music is pretty good though.
I love me some Ace of Spades, and a handful of other Motörhead tracks. Overall though, I can only handle this type of vocal range in spurts with limited number of songs.
These would've been some pretty electric shows to attend in the early 80's. There isn't a lot of variety from one song to the next, but it sure does a good job of keeping the energy up. If you like metal, you should probably really enjoy this.
