Reviews (page 4 of 7)

My throat hurts from just imagining what it would be like to sound like Lemmy. The perfect voice for their sound. While metal really isn't my bag, I feel like Motorhead is a little more approachable for a guy like me.

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this turned out to be a much more melodic and enjoyable listening experience than I thought it would be.

I'm not a huge metal fan, but I quite liked this one. That being said: dear God the recording quality...

The guitars were killer

Good and entertaining but did not do a whole lot for me. Had heard Ace of Spades before and it still slaps.

Debuted before Sex Pistols - were too much Bikers than Punks but IMO they ushered in the era…The trio was fun to get to know

I was surprised by Motörhead. Highlights: Ace of spades, Iron Horse/Born to Lose and Overkill. 3.85

Fast loud and dirty. Who knew they had this many songs? But an excellent live recording of what must've been a hell of a show.

I have never listened to motorhead, only knew them by name. I knew of some of the tracks, and this was a great album. I felt the mix on the live show was a little rough at times, but solid album.

very powerful group of 3 people, good live sound Will I listen to again: 35%

Repeat after me: LIVE ALBUMS ARE RARELY WORTH IT, but this one had great energy, but was same-y after a while. The apple version had so many live recordings, I only listened to a subset. Highlights: ace of spades

Music is about moods. I don't always want to bang my head. But when I do, Motorhead is not a bad choice. 3.45. Just shy of enough to round up to 4. Solid, solid 3.

I’ve always enjoyed what I’ve heard of Motörhead. I’m just not a fan of non-jazz live albums on this list. To top it off, this isn’t even a single concert, it’s a compilation of performances from concerts. Also every time Lenny talks, I’m pulled out of the listening zone I’ve been in.

This album grabs your attention straight away, ace of spades, would have been amazing to be there watching it live. Stay clean, iron horse, we are the roadcrew, Capricorn, we’re also favourites tracks.

The generator god is mocking me, since I just complained about how live albums feel unsatisfying. And “God loves those whom he corrects” … I was actually kind of into this one, possibly because my expectations were so low. I knew next to nothing about the band… my impressions would have been “older British metal band with a stupid umlaut.” But I found the sound surprisingly engaging. Reading on their Wikipedia page, they say they never exactly thought of themselves as a metal band, but a rock and roll band that fit in well with their contemporary punk cousins. And that’s exactly what I hear, a bunch of guys having fun drawing on elements of all three genres while also celebrating the ace of spades. I’ll be curious to see if I like the studio version more or less than this.

This is... Alright, I'm not really a fan of live albums in general but whats here is pretty good tunage. I might be persueded to listen to more Motörhead in the future Theres's plenty of songs I liked but nothing I really loved... And one track that has aged like milk in Florida sunshine 😬

Dirty, gritty late 70’s early 80’s British Metal and I love it. This album is touted as an essential live album and I get why. I am not really a Motörhead fan but I do enjoy some of their songs and this captures them at their height. It’s good, if you like this sort of thing.

Just over a full year after Motörhead dropped their addition to the slowly developing Hard Rock/Heavy Metal scene of the 80s with Ace of Spades, they dropped a live album to accompany it that some people also find to be just as legendary as that aforementioned album. I am personally not huge on Motörhead, but I got to respect just how much their sound translates to the live setting like on this whole project. If you enjoy hearing a chain-smoking biker kind of guy gargle out some pretty sick Heavy Metal tracks then you will love this. I was more impressed by the energy more than anything else and I think that makes it more notable than their other project on the 1001 albums to hear list, Ace of Spades, but again I wouldn't call this an essential album to hear before you die unless you are the target audience of Motörhead.

loud seems to be the one drum track all the way through

Hood metal album. Surprising audio quality for a live album.

At some point I thought they were gonna dedicate a song to me because I swear every damn person on the planet got a shout out here

Ace of Spades - 5/5 Stay Clean - 4/5 Metropolis - 3.5/5 The Hammer - 3.5/5 Iron Horse - 3.5/5 No Class - 4/5 Overkill - 3.5/5 (We Are) The Road Crew - 3.5/5 Capricorn - 3/5 Bomber - 3.5/5 Motorhead - 3.5/5 Motörhead is the definitive example of being really good at one thing and one thing only: making songs that sound like Ace of Spades. Overall: 3.5/5 Favorites: Ace of Spades

I was waiting for a ballad ....

Find it hard to rate albums like this that I can appreciate but will just never do it for me. RYM: Y (#939) Saved a song: N

An objectively good album of all their hits and I'm sure it sounded amazing live Just not my type of music, and did not bother to finish listening to it

F yeah

I think this one is a 3. Sort of feel like a lot of songs are very similar. I don't dislike the songs just seemed too much the same to be very interesting.

First Motörhead album I've ever listened to before. All excellent songs, but kind of same-y. Solid effort. High 3!

Man that vocal is *rough*

4 Motörhead

-wow ok, i liked this waaay more than Ace Of Spades. which i did not particularly care for and sort of made me write off Motörhead. guess the band’s energy and skill translated much better for me in a live setting -it’s still not my absolute favorite but might be quite fun to listen to in lieu of morning coffee or at the gym. 3.5 -Favorites: Ace Of Spades, Iron Horse / Born To Lose

Beats a kick in the face, kinda

I don't like metal that much

I had liked Ace of Spades from my Guitar Hero days as a teen. The rest of the album was ok, the vocals can get grating after a while. Ace of Spades ★★★★☆ Stay Clean ★★★☆☆ Metropolis ★★★☆☆ The Hammer ★★★☆☆ Iron Horse / Born to Lose ★★★☆☆ No Class ★★★☆☆ Overkill ★★★☆☆ (We Are) The Road Crew ★★★☆☆ Capricorn ★★☆☆☆ Bomber ★★★☆☆ Motörhead ★★★☆☆ Over the Top ★★★☆☆ Average Album Rating: 3.0/5.0 ★★★☆☆

Hilariously one note, but I’m glad they can laugh at it themselves when he introduces a track as their slow one and the proceeds to play another identical breakneck speed number. Fun listen and I imagine a fun gig there and then.

Only knew Ace of Spades but didn't hate the album. The quality is not great and not really my cup of tea.

To be honest, I've never really understood the appeal of live albums when they are playing the songs straight. The studio album experience is almost always going to be better... In any event, Lemmy sounds great live and you can tell that seeing these guys at their peak would have been a hell of a high octane experience. That said, this format doesn't do very much for me and I'm kind of meh on the experience. Very soft 3 for me.

SPEEEEEEEED. Nothing wrong with the Motorhead sound except is very one dimensional. All songs sounded pretty much the same. I'm sure this was an awesome concert to be at in 1981, but I could use more variety in my office in 2026.

Damn live Motorhead shows must've been absolutely electric. What a show starter with Ace of Spades. Something about Motorhead just gets me going. Really loved Capricorn. I could see myself moshing to this stuff back in the day. Something about the rawness I love. Unfortunately the quality of the recording doesn’t really cut it. Feel like it could’ve been way better. Originally only was going to listen to the original (~40 minutes) but wanted to hear Train Kept a Rollin'. Worth it. Teetering on the 3/4 line but I’m gonna go down on this one.

Listenable.

Not my jam

Not my vibe.

you know, they were rocking out here. gotta give credit where credit's due!

abrasive, but probably important

It was ok

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Ace of Spades, Overkill Other than Ace of Spades (which I think I am largely aware of due to it being another Tony Hawk's Pro Skater song), I have no experience with Motorhead. So, with that being said, I am not sure, or rather, I am surprised that the author of the List chose to put a live album of Motorhead playing instead of a studio album. I am not convinced that was a good idea. The music sounds very muddied or audibly blurry. Having the audience cheer and scream as the band plays is cool enough, but the production value just isn't there. The recording of the concert just doesn't sound good. Which is unfortunate, because the set list was pretty sweet. Beyond the live album criticisms, I can't help but notice that there are a lot of similarities across the tracks. I found myself hearing Ace of Spades in probably two or 3 OTHER songs they played. The same... idk I guess its the percussion? Maybe the rhythm? I dont know enough about music to articulate how the tracks are similar, but they are. For me the highlights are the vocals and the percussion. Lemmy Kilmister's voice is so distinctive, maybe even iconic, and the drumming is just out of this world. All this being said, this album simply doesn't rise to the same level that Iron Maiden's debut album or Ozzy's Paranoid does. Maybe that's because its a live album, maybe its something else. I am not sure.

Boring

It's rough getting a live album before a studio one. Because besides ace of spades this is my first time hearing the rest. Sounds absolutely fantastic though andi enjoyed it

i think he must've had this voice even at 5 years old.

Favorite track: ace of spades other picks: overkill, the road crew, bomber

Unnoteworthy but inoffensive. I'm sure I could think of 1001 other albums that everyone should listen to before they die.

Enjoyed but not my favorite rock

Great album but loses a star for “jailbait”

Interessantes, aber zu gewaltiges Hardrock Live-Epos.

I've never been a megafan of Motörhead; I'm of the opinion that they'd make for a great "best of" compilation, but I never tend to gravitate towards any of their records. They know what they're good at, and they do it well but the lack of deviations in style can become a bit fatiguing after a while. This, as a live album, delivers on the mission statement in that many of the classics are represented, and it benefits from a gritty, unpolished sound to give the songs an added edge. The standard version is fairly tight at 43 minutes - there is an extended version but I'm quite content to give that a pass for the moment. As for whether I'd revisit? Possibly, but I'm not in any great hurry.

So Motörhead is a band I like, but I really have to be in the mood for them. As for this album, I really didn’t care much for it, and a lot of it is because I just don’t think they had the best recording quality for a live album. Either way, I would much rather listen to their studio albums than this one.

Interesting, a live Motörhead album on the 1001 list. A gigantic bonkers slab of the heaviest speed metal you could hope to find. SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Taking this too seriously can cause irritation, inflammation of the arrogance glands, and has been shown to cause cankles in laboratory rats (no rats were harmed etc etc).

Pretty good. It would have been great to see them perform back then. This is a good live album, but for me I don’t know if it has the magic to justify being on this list.

The good news is that it sounds quite similar to their studio tracks, so they’re obviously talented The bad news is that almost every song sounds the same

I like my metal, but Motörhead has never exactly been my drug of choice. That being said, they are still unquestionably deserving of respect. Now, the question remains, even if I respect No Sleep 'til Hammersmith, do I like it? Yes. Yes I do. Here, Motörhead is operating with such reckless abandon and sheer, vital energy that this kind of functions as a punk album. And while I don't love *every* song here, this energy brings a cohesive whole together, and it works for me. The best songs here are the highest energy Motörhead classics. Ace Of Spades and Overkill are particularly exciting. Both songs just feel like an explosion. That being said, assuming we're keeping it to the original 11 song release of this, there really isn't a *bad* song here. It's really just a question of which Motörhead classics I'm receptive to, and which ones I'm not. Anyways, I can understand the placement in the book. This is a great live document of a band during their best years *AND* this is a foundational text for thrash metal. Perhaps most importantly, it's also just sick as hell. Also, I just want to give a quick shout-out to Lemmy's bass tone, he was not afraid to *fuck* that instrument up. I'm giving it a very strong 3 for now, but if I develop a deeper love for Motörhead at some point, I may revisit this.

I can't believe there's more than one Motörhead album here... then again I can belive it! The high energy British metal/hard rock doesn't let up live either. Lemmy's gravelly lead vocals are legendary. One criticism is that one song blends into another without much variation, but they do it well.

It could almost be one long track. When they did overkill I thought it was a reprise of ace of spades.

Love “Ace of Spades” but this gets really formulaic really fast.

Probably really great to have been there but over recording, it isn’t anything special

Though this is not my sound, I really enjoyed the energetic guitars on this album. Despite not enjoying the volume and the speed of the music, I found myself tapping my foot along.

Speed metal! Not my thing but they're good at it!

Who would win in a wrestling contest: Lemmy or God? Trick question, Lemmy is God. Not a huge fan of live albums, but this one sounded so polished.....then you hear the crowd and realize it's live. You also kinda get a "best of" album, so I guess that's cool. The downside is......and I hate to be "that guy".....but it just kinda runs together after a few songs. Albums allow for an ebb and flow throughout an album and for someone new to Motorhead, I wish I would have gotten the Ace of Spades album first. Yeah, it absolutely rocks and is an awesome live album......but you'll see a band live that you like......not one that you've never heard before. It's great to get a sense of the energy and how hard they rock, but bad to get a feel of full scope of the band outside of singles.

I wrote a review earlier in this project where I admitted that I once thought that Earth, Wind, and Fire were a joke but that the album I listened to convinced me otherwise. Well, it has happened again. I thought Motorhead were all style and no substance. I thought there were some metalhead band that I would roll my eyes at and just wait for the album to end. I was entirely and completely wrong. This is awesome. Were there like three songs that sounded like "Ace of Spades" (including that song)? Yes. Did it get a little repetitive after a while? I guess so. But man are these guys excellent musicians. And that is the core of this album for me. Each member demonstrated track after track that while they may not be singing about anything totally deep or super meaningful, they absolutely put effort into both practicing/being excellent at their respective instruments and at arranging their songs to maximum effect and to play at their strengths. I'm not a Motorhead fan after this, but there is a newfound respect for them after listening to this. I hadn't heard anything else from them except "Ace of Spades," as I suspect many other listeners had not. But I'm happy to have listened to this and would welcome any other Motorhead albums should they pop up. Three stars. Standout Tracks: Ace of Spades, Stay Clean, Iron Horse/Born to Lose, Bomber

More than anything, a live album is a tradeoff between audio fidelity and something intangible that comes from playing for a crowd. In the case of Motorhead's No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith, this dynamic is on full display. To their credit, Motorhead bring an incredible energy to their performances. This is music that demands your attention. It is fast, loud and brash, and critically, you get a sense of character from the live shows that you would never get from Motorhead's studio albums. Throughout the album, Eddie Clarke's aggressive guitar serves as the clear standout. Particular highlights for me include No Class, Motorhead and the aptly named Overkill. Phil Taylor's drumming is also tight and relentless, particularly on Overkill. However, despite the impressive energy that comes through in the live recordings and the fact that the shows must've been incredible to attend, there's no getting around the fact that the album itself doesn't sound very good. To my ears, the bass sounds buried in the mix and the entire album sounds tinny, as though it were recorded using an audience member's bootleg pocket tape recorder. Where some live albums will keep transitions between songs intact, or at least disguise the transitions to maintain an immersive experience, the cuts between songs were handled pretty crudely. It also doesn't necessarily help that Lemmy Kilmister sounds like he's been chain smoking anything that would burn for the previous decade. But even after taking the downsides into account, I can only view this album as a relative success. It gave me a sense of Motorhead's character as a band and had me enjoying plenty of songs from a band that I had largely written off before this listen.

Evokes the image of a brawl in a pub in Gateshead in the 80s

80s metal. First live album. Fast and hard.

Pretty good! I'm not a fan of live albums because of song selection (or compilation albums for the same reason) but I was pleasantly surprised by this effort. Good recording given it was 40+ years ago.

One of the reviewers on this website was mostly right. Half of the songs sound identical to each other. At least those tracks sound good. "Metropolis" is my favourite, as it deviates from the other songs, I would've enjoyed that performance if I were alive and in Hammersmith in 1981. 3 stars for "No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith".

I quite like this stuff when I’m doing household chores like hoovering or mowing the lawn. Put it on loud and off you go moving whatever you’re pushing in time to the music. Doesn’t matter that I don’t know the songs it’s the vibe that’s important. Have done this for years to The Ramones It’s Alive album. This is a worthy successor. The value of the music is questionable but the sheer raw power of it is top notch. 3/5 28/10/25

If it was half as long I would have given it 4 stars

It did keep me awake but I still don't think the majority of live albums make sense if the artist has perfectly fine studio albums as an alternative.

Idk how to rate this. Not my thing--or maybe just not the right entry point into heavy metal for me, a genre I don't really know. Also, I haven't yet had the opportunity to blast this on my stereo. That may be what it needs. All that said, it's obvious in listening even on my headphones why some people love motorhead. Driving, powerful songs, and a sound that, at the time at least, was very original.

My main takeaway is that Lemmy’s guitarist, Fast Eddie Clarke, sounds exactly like Mike and Stone from Pearl Jam. Like, dead-ringer for those soaring, overdriven wah-pedal licks. I’m curious whether there are a bunch of intermediaries there, or whether there’s a direct influence. Other than that, I’d have loved to be at that show, Ace of Spades rules; but otherwise prob not coming back.

Thinking about how that guy got laid by over 1200 women

neutral to this tbh

Not a huge fan of live albums. Disc one was pretty tight however, and gives as good a noisy energy as a studio album would. Alright for an occasional listen. Heavy metal before it got pretentious and/or commercially slick. Give the album credit for that. Bonus star for Lemmy's facial hair.

I like that they insist to call their music "rock n' roll". And it is! Just played a bit faster with distorted guitars and double bass drums. I always thought that Guns n' Roses should also be called rock n' roll. And I learned it predated and influenced Metallica. Kudos to that. The album has great energy. I liked the more bluesy numbers. But the sound quality and that the songs sound "same same" even on the 2nd listen make it to a "won't listen to it again" album.

A decent live album. I am not that into motorhead though.

Onhan tämä meininkiä ja menoa! Ace of spadeeeeees!

I think I only like these guys because of Tony Hawk Pro Skater but I enjoyed this.

I kind of hold Mötorhead to a degree of respect, as in, I deeply respect how they helped developed heavy metal, but can’t say I’m crazy for them. I really can’t for the life of me recall another song outside Ace of Spades… or The Game (wrestling themes are music too). Though, let’s not pretend for a second this is music that’s needs merit. All they need to be is loud and my monkey brain neurons go “brrr”. But honestly, I think my main issue is that I don’t think this sounds any different live than in the studio. Live albums are the epitome of “you just had to be there”. It’s hard to really replicate the energy from the event. I don’t know man, they could have used the space here for a second Mötorhead album. It’s an interesting live album, but to me, it’s just a greatest hits album. And No Remorse exists as their best of, so…. yeah. Favorite track: Ace of Spades Other hits: Metropolis, Iron Horse/ Born to Lose, Overkill, (We Are) The Road Crew, Motorhead, Stay Clean

460/1001

3.75 I felt the loudness by proxy. good stuff

Pretty noisy and samey.

Fine band.

For someone predisposed to enjoy this music by his Dad, this is just ambient music. After head-banging to “Ace of Spades,” it all blurred into the background. No other song attracted my attention, for better and for worse.

Pretty good, high energy, solid live performance. But I'm not that into Motörhead, just generally.

It’s a bit too heavy for my liking like more rock heavy than I prefer but they have a few great songs like Ace of Spades

H: I liked this album a lot more than I thought I would. The energy was incredible and you felt like you were at the show. A lot of the songs sounded the same making it cohesive but slightly repetitive. Overall cool but would not put into my daily rotation. 6/10 H fav song: Ace of Spades Z: This is my first exposure to Motörhead with the exception of “Ace of Spades” (thank you Guitar Hero). I can only imagine the energy in the room at one of their shows; the live album does not let up for a second. They brake for no one. By the end, their sound was a bit repetitive (raspy and guttural vocals, uptempo drums, driven electric guitar riffs) but I enjoyed this far more than I thought I would. A really solid live album. 7/10 Z fav song: Ace of Spades

Super powerful, but live albums suck

pretty badass i guess. this list has too much lame old metal, wheres all of the barely listenable screechy death metal shit, im tryna hear some of that

My in laws knew Lemmy as they're from Benllech. They said he was nice. Would never have put this on if it weren't for the list. It's very metal. Didn't hate it, but I gave my ears a rest afterwards with The Who.

I like Motorhead, but I don't like live albums. The quality is very crappy. I will give it 3 stars just because it's Motorhead.

I thought I would really dislike this but didn’t. Not my jam generally, but this was a fairly rock-based metal album compared to most of the noise in the metal genre. A great rhythm section helped out a lot. Don’t need to listen to more of the group but a solid 3.

I'm not a fan of live albums, but this one isn't bad at all. They sound excellent live, very similar to the studio version but with like a raw edge, they sound huge and their versions here mostly add to the original tracks. "Ace Of Spades" is a classic track, "Iron Horse/Born To Lose" is excellent too here, and "Motorhead" is great.

3.2 2x (1x expanded edition 1h 49m)

Another metal album and this one I’m confused on. The instrumental are amazing on this guitar skills out of this world but the vocals are god awful ruining the whole album for me. There are still great moments and songs through out but tha one factor really drags the whole album down. There really isn’t any change either with most songs being alike. Overall it was an alright album being a solid 6/10 3/5

6/10 Highlights: Overkill; Ace of Spades; Stay Clean

Great music, sound quality kind of sucks

I’ve never liked live albums and this is no exception. This wasn’t for me but I appreciate the talent.

No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith (Live) by Motörhead [1001 albums, live]: 7/10, Fun, high energy hard rock that's about as good as it gets without much substance. I don't have all that much to say about this album, aside from that it's pretty good and it's technically impressive. The songs sound similar enough to be cohesive but stand out just enough to have identities, mostly being just pretty good and above all else, fun and enjoyable. My personal favourite was Capricorn, especially considering how they said they were going to "slow it down" and then proceeded to play something very fast paced. This song does seem to have a level of substance and intrigue to it that's not present on the others and I appreciate that. The lead singer is charismatic and the performances are great, but the relatively simple songs hold them back from being really great.

Motörhead is very specific. They have that 70's metal driven hardcore vibe. They are not mellow enough to be "classic rock" but otherwise fit the stereotype. They have a distinct sound, perhaps too distinct in a way, there is not a lot of range there. I get the sense, since this is a live album, that they know that and were not bothering to become something more or above that. They had their groove and that is what they gave the fans. While this groove is not my groove, I do understand their energy and fan base. Their style appeals to some primitive need for loud driven excitement without too much thinking. This can be a great thing, a great escape, and in THAT space they are really good.

As soon as the recording starts off, we hear Ace of Spades and I knew I was in for a nostalgic trip. The energy is the same all throughout the live performance, which is awesome, but I'm sure for a lot of people it can be a little too repetitive. It's impressive, though, to hear such consistent clarity on a live performance, especially one with such a harsh energy. The vocal performance feels to me like what rock and roll should be. Rough but calculated, it carries an emotion that fits with the rest of the band to represent the rebellious, struggle-forward nature of what it means to be a rock star. Glad I heard it through! 3.3/5

My first Motorhead album I've ever listened to. What can I say? Lots of energy going on, due to the excess usage of amphetamines I think. Nothing wrong with that. They must have put on a good show live, as you can feel the raw energy from the band. Did I enjoy it? Yes, it was a good Thrash and a fairly tuneful one at that. Great speed drumming too. Will I listen to them again? Not by choice.

Original review - "Great selection of songs from their vast array of bangers and they sound great live, but I just don’t do live albums. I didn’t listen to it all. Quality isn’t great, I would just rather listen to a collection or playlist of the studio recordings. I can’t give a 5 for that reason, but I can’t go lower than 4 ‘cos it’s Motorhead." I love Motorhead, but Motorhead or not, I'm not knocking it down to a 3. Live albums should not be on this list. :(

Dont hate the music but the album misses the mark. Bad recording quality should immediately disqualify an album on this list.

No surprises here. This album will sound exactly like you expect it to.

I was shocked I knew a song from this album. Incredible that this band has the energy to do that live. Not my typical cup of tea, but I appreciated it.

This will be my first Motörhead full album. Wow, my phone autocorrected the dots over the o of Motörhead! This is pure energy! How can they do this every night? This is an album but it feels like it would be a 45 minute concert! Great time!

That version of Ace of Spades fucking SHREDS.

Not typically my cup of tea, but not bad.

Not my thing, but quite enjoyed it initially, Ace of Spades is obviously a classic, but it got a bit repetitive towards the end - get why it’s popular especially amongst teens and young men, much better than AC/DC in my view

All starts to sounds a same-same after a few songs. Enjoyable though.

Not bad for a live album.

fine live album, nice and heavy, 5 out of 5 concert I would go to

This is a very solid live album from what I think is quite a mediocre band.

Should be 4 stars but a live album is cheating when greatest hits aren't allowed. Sting & The Police will be fuming.

Agressivamente okay. Me encontrei balançando a cabeça o tempo todo. 3/5

Why LIVE albums!! I don't care if it sounds really good. I want well produced music with artists at their best which is in the studio. No matter, how cool would it be to see these guys live. lol.

Favorite Track: Motörhead

Please Don't Touch

very energetic and good sounding songs, good performance and good energy, i probably wouldn’t listen again but i did enjoy it

Cool album. I'd be bummed if a headliner act I went to see only played for 43 minutes though!

Speed metal — it’s not my favorite. At all. But, I’ll give these guys their props as they seem to have been major innovators in the genre. They’re obviously talented, even though they use their talents to make unpleasing noise. I should give them a two (i don’t like it), but i can see why this should be part of a list of pop music that you “must hear before you die.” (Phew, glad I got that out of the way!). It’s a three, but speed metal that comes later will not fair so well.

Fun, balls out heavy metal!!

Rating: 7/10 Great energy and song selection, it all sounds the same after a while though.

Ace of spades is a classic. Cracking riffs but a bit repetitive of a genre I’m not that bothered about

Rockin but all the songs feels very samey. Although it was probably fun show, that energy doesn't really transfer to the recording. Live albums don't really work out well here.

I recognize what they were at the time and respect them for what they are but not really for me. I did enjoy the bubble of tone they created that you could bob along to but the songs felt borderless and was confused to find myself 4 songs in when it felt like 2. A good time if you're into the party rock n roll sound.

Starting with Ace of Spades was a bold move. There were some high moments after that, but not enough. Motörhead mostly sounds the same to me and while that’s not always a bad thing, for a bad quality live recording it can be. I feel almost bad rating this a 3/5, but the album had no variability whatsoever. Perhaps I’d enjoy it live in person.

Motorhead is good in doses for me. This album did little to change that for me. I like some tracks but overall it wasn't great. Instrumentals are decent but the vocal wasn't for me.

This made me feel mad

Quick reminder that Lenny collects Nazi memorabilia. Anyway, the music is ok. 2.83

The rare band that I respect without necessarily liking all their songs. Tremendous energy in this live set!

More than their studio album, I thought I was listening to slight variations of the same song for 45 minutes. As a live album, I kept hearing the cuts that reminded me I was only hearing what was deemed the best; no continuation meant the majority of a show was not spectacular. Maybe a 3.5.

If you only heard the talking in between you’d think the singer was an 80 year old lol

Pretty fun if repetitive

Straight forward heavy rock. Poor recording, even for live.

Ignore, if you can, that this creep proclaims he wants to bang 15 year old children during the song “Jailbait”, and you’ll find driving rhythm and bass, ripping guitar, and gritty vocals. All of which create a high energy don’t-take-shit-off-no one vibe that is appealing.

I dig Motorhead, but just not enough to "love" them.

I was hoping this album would be a crystallizing moment for me and Motorhead. It wasn't a bad album by any means, but it didn't unveil new depths. It's fun, it's loud. I can smell the cigarettes through my headphones. It isn't quite for me. It's a little single-tone. If I skip through the record to random songs at random times, it's often hard to tell that the song has changed at all. I don't dislike it, but I only like it at very specific and infrequent times. I'll revisit this album during my midlife crisis, when me and Kit are riding our hogs down Route 1. 5/10

3.5 stars. Loud live heavy metal album. Precursor to thrash metal. They go hard and play all their hits.

Motorhead sounds fine but once you've heard two songs you've heard the whole album.

Great live album, full of energy, though the middle third of the album is not as memorable as the other two-thirds. Good three-and-a-half record.

I went into my first Mötorhead album ready to dislike it, but I was pleasantly surprised by how fun their sound is! The album is cohesive, though the songs did blend together a bit. I’m not gonna come back to it, but I’m glad I listened to it and know what they’re about now.

I’m not too sure what makes this album one of the best. The vocals are somewhat drowned out. I’ve heard much clearer live versions of music that aren’t on this list. From what I know of these guys, they sound the same live as they do in studio albums pretty much. This is straight forward metal/punk. Not everyone will enjoy this.

I like their raw, fast, punky version of heavy rock. Some great stuff here, Metropolis stands out, even though I'd never heard it before. That guitar sound is so good. Lemmy was a character, and a thinker too.

This next song is the same as the first except it's a little bit louder and a little bit worse.

This one is full of energy like a live album should be. A good 'best of' sampler if you like metal.

Fav: Stay Clean - Live In England 1981 Least Fav: Capricorn - Live In England 1981 They’ve got one thing they repeat, but the energy in each song makes me unable to hate it, even with Lemmy’s cigarette smoking raspy vocals

Lots of good songs

Not a big metal fan, but if I wanted to listen to metal this is what I would want -- straight ahead, driving, adrenaline

The first few tracks were cool. The rest sounded like one song on repeat.

Motörhead is a little same, but it’s still really fun

It takes balls to open up with your biggest song. Start strong / end strong, I guess. Almost a 2, but Lemmys mole made me give it a 3.

I like the idea of Motorhead more than the real thing. Ace of Spades is an all timer though.

It starts well -- hard not to opening with Ace of Spades but it kind of lose its momentum. It's kind of the problem with these albums (bestof, live): they are great if you love the band, but as an introduction or for someone who is not fully committed to it, it's too long and things starts to blur and just be one long moment. There's still lots of energy to it and we can hear that they were a band made for the stage.

As much as I appreciate Motorhead, every song kinda sounds the same. It's great fun and all but not super exciting.

Ok listen. Very raw which I enjoyed.

NOG EEN LIVE ALBUM??? What are the fucking odds... FAVO: Ace of spades(Duh), No Class, Overkill, Bomber

I listened to the whole hour and 48 of this album. I recognize that it’s good music as far as sonics go. Like they are absolutely shredding, I can hear the command they have over their audience and I know it was one heck of a show just by hearing the outtakes. My knock is that it all sounds like one long ass song and that’s where I get lost. But I fully understand that if you’re enamored with this sound then this album is god like to you, which is why I can’t rate it lower than a 3. Unspectacular to me but I can hear how it could be spectacular to someone else.

Enjoy a bit of Motorhead - very good live album, still let down by that one track

Its ok, wish they had more rifts!

One hell of a live performance. It's insane to me that they didn't need any post production to clean any of that up. I don't really love metal but that's still wild. Very cool intricate work on guitar and drums. Felt a bit repetitive to me but I'm sure if you're in the middle of that mosh pit you don't really give a fuck.

A fun live album. Not any major takeaways from it, but it’s a fun listen when you want some kick ass energy.

High octane fuel required

Metal with a thrashy, punk attitude. It is nice that they don't try to be very flashy, and the aggressiveness of the music is really nice. 3.5 stars

They sure are heavy. The drummer is in remarkable form! Otherwise, just OK. I liked "Capricorn". 3.1

Motorhead obviously fucking rips, but a Live album? I hope there's some studios on here.

Powerful and driving. A lot of fun and the sound is good for an old live album.

always cool

Verder beukt Motorhead hun metalachtige rock n roll in no time door je hersenpan heen.

St. Patrick's Day 2025 I am now in the final 10 albums, starting with No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith! And despite only sharing 3 songs with Ace of Spades, the last Motörhead album, it feels like I've heard it all before... The live format might actually be a better case for this band's placement on the list than their studio output. Though it still didn't convert me into a fan, the sheer momentum of the 11 tracks is commendable. HL: "Overkill", "Capricorn", "Motorhead"

3/12/25. As Lemmy would say, this album came to kick my ass! Barely any breaks with hard hitting rock in a live atmosphere. Love the energy in this, impressed by the sound they got with only three people, as beefy as an AC/DC record.

Ace of Spades is an all time classic. The rest begins to run together.

Every song from Motörhead sounds very similar, but it scratches a certain itch. I like how this album has the extra energy from being a live album while also sort of serving as a greatest hits up until that point. I do feel the albums blows its steam really early though, side 1 with Ace of Spades and the beginning of side 2 have the best Motörhead songs imo, but after a while the latter halves of side 1 and 2 kind of blend into one. Still an enjoyable listen with a ton of energy.

For a live album this sound is crisp and heavy, however while Motörhead recorded this album to give their fans a test of their live sound, they surpass all of this in the studio. Live albums are a tough thing for this list and I'm not sure Motörhead is served well on this list by this entry. 3/5

The audio quality for a live album was surprisingly good. Vocals were remarkably clear. But, it was still just a Motorhead album. I wanted to bang my head and run in circles like a maniac, but I'm not sure I'll ever remember one Motorhead song from another. Except Ace of Spades.

I've never really tried listening to Motorhead, which is odd, as I've always enjoyed Ace of Spades. This album seems like a poor introduction to the band. The vocals are too low in the mix and it's hard to distinguish between songs that I'd never heard before. It's a shame, because I think I'd enjoy listening the the studio versions. It's almost like I'm listening to the echo of something I think I might enjoy. I'm giving this three stars, not because I think the album itself deserves them, but because it made me want to give the "proper" Motorhead albums a go, so it has merit in that at least.

A solid album but nothing particularly special.

For a live album you'd expect the energy to get across, but it didn't. Could not for the life of me tell you why. I'm sure this went crazy in-person, but a somewhat muted mix coupled with a genre I'm only interested to the extent it merges with punk is not a good equation. I'm sure someone could explain to me how, at the time, this was a high-quality live recording especially for a genre like this, and I would believe you. But you fail to consider that I don't give a shit. Rating: 5.7 Favorite Song: Bomber

6/10 Not really my bag but enjoy a live album almost always. What really threw me off was I kept expecting them to sing Triple H’s walk out song at any moment but the moment never came. Favorite Song: Ace of Spades

Not a fan of metal and I liked this. Absent from this was the old death metal vocals, which pleases me. I'm not about to seek out Moorhead, but yeah, I dug the hard-core vibe I got.

ace of spades- 4 stay clean- 4 metropolis- 4 hammer- 4 iron horse- 4 or 5 no class- 4 overkill- 4 road crew- 4 capricorn- 4 bomber- 4 motorhead- 4 over the top 4 I think this album was just one really long song

Highlights: ACE OF SPADES (obviously) and CAPRICORN (catchy musicianship). Side note: yes there is a song called JAILBAIT and it is about what you think it is (yikes).

I won’t deny that “Ace of Spades” is fun, but having it as the first track really made everything that followed feel like a watered-down version of the same song. 2-3

Parhaat: Ace Of Spades, Overkill,

Rough recording quality but a good energetic performance. The 40 min runtime of the OG version was probably the right amount.

A bit repetitive after the first 3 songs, great energy can't deny that and despite the recording quality, I'm sure it sounded great live

love motorhead but a bit too long

Production isn't great and that hurt the album. Not.a fan of live albums but I like Motorhead so it gets a pass from me.

#485. Not terrible, but also every song is just about exactly the same. 3/5: fine

It's exciting, lovely music. Not what I'd sit and listen to usually, but I bet it was fantastic live.

Isn't it great when a band you only sort of like plays a show and starts with their best song? That way, you can feel free to leave for the restroom, a cigarette, or a trip to the merch table and not worry about missing anything important afterwards. Opening this live album with "Ace of Spades" worked fine for me. The rest of the songs are typical Motorhead, devoid of subtlety or subtext. It's loud, fast, and heavy. 'Nuff said.

Pretty awesome

When it comes to Motorhead I probably only know Ace of Spades. I didn't know what to expect from a live album but this album was a surprise. It was enjoyable, even if none of the songs made a strong impression on me. Bonus points for having a song titled Capricorn (RIP Lemmy, a fellow Cap). 3/5

It’s loud and chaotic. The energy never really slows down, like a storm in a small room. The guitars are rough, the drums are wild, and the whole thing feels barely in control. It’s messy, and definitely not for someone who needs perfect.

Very enjoyable heavy metal rock; the songs all sounded very similar though

“Give a live rock album something other than a 3 or double it and give it to the next person?” My honest reaction:

Great energy. Don’t like quite as much on second listen, but still enjoyable. 3.5!

I don’t hate it. I like the energy. It seems like something that would be better experienced in person packed with others compared to listening whilst drinking coffee and checking emails early in the morning. No Class is catchy. I ended up liking this more than I thought I would. Great energy and a decent recording even if sound quality wasn’t high.

You can almost taste the whisky and cigarettes .. I know this is early, because you can actually hear what he says before each song. RIP Lemmy 🤘🏼

Not my genre

I find Motörhead to be a bit of an acquired taste, but if you’re in the mood, ‘No Sleep 'til Hammersmith’ while rough, is a good time and quite a lot of fun. If you’re not in the mood, then you will probably hate this a lot.

Some really sick guitar if you can bear through the trash vocals, poor audio quality (due to it being a live recording), and length of the album.

I imagine that this is exactly how a Motorhead concert would sound...except louder and you would feel the growl.

I liked Ace of Spades, but I was surprised at the lack of variety. Most of the other songs felt very similar to Ace of Spades.

Egal. Jeder Titel klang gleich? Egal. Zu laut? Egal. Bestes Live-Rock-Album? Nope. Trotzdem 3* Lemmy Sympathiepunkte.

This one’s a bit of a rollercoaster. I was beginning to think that live Motörhead was wearing out it’s welcome quite early, but something about the persistence of their energy and great chemistry/playing live was noticed around the time they get to We Are The Road Crew. A nice little sentiment for a yeehaw metal song. But then it kinda goes back into a wall of noise towards the end of the album. Still, engaging enough to hold my attention for an hour

Generally, I’m really tired of Ace of Spades, but when that bass kicks un, I still get excited. It’s a really good song, and this version brings a lot of energy! I’m also opposed to including live albums on the list, but I have to admit I like the rawness it brings to the songs here. As for Motorhead being a one trick pony, I’ll just counter with AcDc and Ramones. Still, not the biggest Motorhead-fan and about half the songs are rather nondescript, so it’s a strong 3

Haven't listened to much Motörhead honestly, I mostly know that 'Ace of Spaces' is a real banger track. Overall I found this a pretty cool, high energy live recording. Since I don't know most songs from before I find them a bit unintelligible from each other. I think this would be less of an issue on a proper studio recording, so I'd rather have listened to that other than a live one. But overall, not bad!

Raw and powerful

A solid live album. This rocks hard.

If you are into this this seems like something you would love. Definitely scrappy and fully committed but not something I enjoy musically.

3 - Felt like it dragged on with the same song over and over, cool as a live album but they wouldn’t be my first choice to go see

See previous Motorhead reviews. It's cheating to have Ace of Spades up your sleeve basically, because if you went to see them live and they opened with that, your head would be spinning so hard that you wouldn't notice that the rest of it is, basically, a very weak version of the same song.

The roots of metal music to come with a focus on the punk side of it. Cool to see the how punk influenced the roots of metal. Fun live album, wasn't in the mood for it

Thought I was going to enjoy this one more. While nothing was particularly bad, every song sounded the same to me.

Raucous and fun. I never thought I was a Motörhead fan but I enjoy every bit of it I’m served. This is no exception

The playing is tight. If I didn't know better, I would say that this was just the studio versions with crowd noise added in the background (Yes, I'm looking at you, KISS). I do like Motorhead, but I don't think that I can listen for more than 3 songs at a time. Still, it's a hell of a live album even if every song sounds the same as all the others.

Good noise.

🎵The only song I need is the Ace of Spades, the Ace of Spades.🎵 But of course there were 11 more songs. Not too bad for a live album.

Kind of a lot don't you think, just with the crowd and the live and the lack of variation

Well, there’s definitely a vibe here. Need some whiskey, a bike, a dirty bar, a scanky hoe, black leather, and a lot of facial hair and I’ll fit right in. It ALL sounds the same.

Really fun heavy metal record. Super tight for live and all the attitude.

Good music that I was into in the 80s, but horrible quality on the recording.

This might have been a little Over the Top for me yesterday.

It was pretty energizing but the guy was right they are pretty one dimensional. After like the 5th song ai checked if it was still the first one.

Enjoyable and fun listen, though I can't help but feel like a live album full of already-released songs is a bit of a ratings cheat...

“They ask me what did Motörhead bring to heavy rock. I tell them nothing. Nada. Zero. We brought nothing, we took it away, the egos, the stuck up musicianship, the 15 minute drum solos, the shitty stage clothes, the makeup, the hype. And what we left was real. It was Motörhead.” Anyone who makes a statement like that, and yet decided when they started in the business to go by the name Lemmy Kilmister, meant it. LET IT GO. The man was a hard living fan of everything. He loved his booze. His collections of pop art. He was one of the biggest Elvis fans ever. This record is a swift kick in the nuts to the Judas Priests, the Led Zeppelins and all the rest that felt that they needed to keep adding leather studs and mystical symbols to get their point across. And it wasn’t in a judgemental way. He was friends with those guys. He just wanted to remind them that the music- ALL music- from The King to The Prince Of Darkness didn’t actually need the other stuff if they didn’t want to. The music was enough for him Was just a fan that it must be good enough for everyone else too This record it’s a five or Lemmy, poor attitude, three or listenability, and a bonus just for Ace of Spades.

Motörhead Live - it’s what you’d expect!!

This was okay. Wasn't bad, but didn't really stand out either.

Wouw.. somehow a classic back in the day. Hardcore punk meets heavy metal. However getting old I suppose. Playing the album in its entirety and my ears hurt…. Nice for a song or too, but then… too much

Simply too much Motörhead. Some of the guitar was cool though

Some seminal metal and for once a live album that actually sounds live rather than overdubbed.

Not bad at all.

Motörhead and Lemmy always struck me as the real deal.

Well, I accidentally deleted the review I had. So here's a shorter review of this Motörhead live album. I said in my Ace of Spades review that Motörhead's music is pretty repetitive. Fortunately, this album is less repetitive on account of many of the songs coming from different albums. In a way, I kind of liked this one more than Ace of Spades. The album, not the song. The song is on this album though, and it's as great as ever. Other songs like "Overkill" are also fun. One thing I should've highlighted more in my Ace of Spades review is how much of a legend Lemmy is. I may not be the biggest Motörhead fan, but there's a reason why people have called Lemmy a god amongst men. Despite the fact that I was an actual child who had no idea who he was when he died, I still miss that man. Let's wrap this review up real quickly. The sound is fun, but still fairly repetitive. The live album nature is not too intrusive. The album's fun, but not the most memorable. High 3/5.

10/10.

3.5/5. Better than I thought it would be. I didn't mind this, I liked parts of it. Pretty decent hard rock.

3.5 Way better than I expected.

Shockingly, I didn't hate this. It's not my thing, and I can't imagine any time that I'd just pop this on to enjoy while doing whatever. But it had its moments and kept me interested from start to finish.

lemmyyyyyyyyyy this is actually quite bland disappointingly 56/100

Love me some motorhead but not crazy about live albums but.... its the next best thing to 'seeing' them live since that won't ever be happening

It's a live album so not perfect at all, but fun and high tempo. Good energy and it must've been a cool show.

I'm still not sure live albums belong on the list, but here we are again. As live albums go, this is hell of a messy, and was obviously a loud and raucous tour. All the big songs are there, but I'd prefer the album version of any of them. Without the visuals (let alone the physical sensations), live versions just feel a bit flat. Sounds like all involved had a great time though!

Crunchy af

Good metal, just started sounding the same

Not as bad as I thought it'd be, all the songs sound the same though

Not on Apple Music

Points for energy, and the album cover is pretty cool, but this largely felt like a thrash/noise rock album. Not sure how much of that is because it's a live album and how much is just Motorhead, but I didn't love this. It all started to sound the same after a while. 2.7

I don't really get live albums, would always prefer to listen to studio material or attend a concert. So while the playing and songs are good I can only give this a 3 as I really don't understand why this is in the list

y dicen que el regueton es repetitivo. This shit wack as fuck. +2 puntos por Ace of Spades y +1 punto por Overkill and thats a straight 5/10.

not as bad as I thought it was going to be, there is still no place for live albums on this list (Nirvana being the exception)

Loads of power and energy from just 3 dudes

Ein Live-Album. Das hat es bei mir immer schwer. Aber netter Rock- und Metal-Sound.

Not a big Motörhead fan. Ace Of Spades is fun, but the rest of it hums the same noise. Lemmy is a legend, mostly as a skirt chasing booze hound. Guys like him are getting rare, and I miss that.

Motörhead's great, but that's a lotta Lemmy. His voice sounds pretty worn by the end.

While there's not much tonal variation, it's good fun. Would rather have had a studio album than a live album though. Would switch out all the live albums for more proper albums tbh.

I think this is good hard rock/ metal. I don't really know. I played it in my car and loud and it was solid. Probably wont listen again but I get why people love it.

Motörhead rules. This was a great listen while fixing the stupid car I was driving today, I just wished that it was the studio versions of all the songs. I really don’t see how live albums are in this list; they’re almost always worse than the recorded stuff. There were a few songs I hadn’t heard before that I’ll have to listen to later on the studio albums. Except “jailbait”. For fucks sake Lemmy.

Yeah, it’s one song - but to be fair, it’s a pretty good song

Pretty cooooollll 3/5

I think they were highly influential to music and Lemmy is a rock star god. However I feel their music is good but not great. Ace of spades of course is a killer song.

Rockin’ rock! Fuckin’ rock! Aaaahhhhhh yeahhhhhhh! Etc, etc, etc. Fine for what it was I suppose but I feel like I need to be right in the fuckin’ rock mood for something like this.

Such a unique sound

There is very little variation on the theme of short, loud and fast. Unimaginative metal. Prob great live if you are there though.

4 or 5 killers, the rest is a little bit much.

I mowed the lawn to this and it was great. But I think Motörhead is a one trick pony when it comes to song writing. Points for playing so fast for 2 hours though.

The rough and boozy voice of Lemmy, the crazy, dirty, fast sound of the band. That's great fun. However, I'm not always in the mood for it. That's why I rarely listen to Motörhead. 3/5
