Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Some interesting songs here, but it all sounds a bit same-y. And its a live album. Not terrible, but nothing great here. Best song: The Roadcrew

It feels like I’ve already listened to this before on this list. I just don’t understand the inclusion of many of these live albums when studio albums from underrepresented artists could’ve been featured instead. “Ace of Spades” sounds good live I guess.

This is new to me. Ace of Spades is a great one and everything else kind of just sounds like that for the rest of the album. They sound great live. I liked Iron Horse because it sounded a little different. I didn’t know Motörhead had a song called Motörhead, has any other band done that? This is very rock and roll, loud and fast and it’s not really my thing. There’s probably a time and a place for it but today wasn’t it.

hootin and hollerin

Live metal album, sounds decent. Has some good guitar and drum work, hate his voice. Motorhead has never been a favorite of mine and this album gets repetitive.

I was a little to young for Motorhead when growing up but sounds like a lot of fun for everyone there. Ace of spades though is all I need to listen to again.

Started great

Even the great Motorhead doesn't have what it takes to make a live album a good idea

Eh. I find a lot of metal to be camp as hell. This one too. A great time but it's hard to take seriously.

Not the biggest Motorhead fan, but they are okay. Pulled down a star for being live and being so long.

Gear: SIMGOT EA1000 Fermat Artwork: 🤘🔦🪩 Production: 🔊🥩😖 Music: ♠️⚡📉 Rating: 🃏🃏(🃏)/5

the lack of variety becomes apparent suuuper quickly. i'm sure this would be a great live show but it doesn't translate beyond a few more notable tracks

Alles recht ähnlich, save influential aber no repeat potenzial

I also liked Ace of Spades but it didn’t need a tribute album.

AND DONT FORGET THE JOKER. Motörhead sucks. I am absolutely baffled by the praise heaped on them. Lemmy had a cool voice and collected Nazi stuff and made 1 song* and everyone loves him? Baffled. Flapped even! *Correction… he made 2 songs “Ace of Spades” and HHH’s entrance music.

i'm sure this was good but every song sounded like ace of spades and i had to mentally check out for the dedication to 15 year old girls part of the setlist

Wird auf Dauer etwas anstrengend. Aber in Ordnung. 2 1/2.

I actually have the same gripe about this as electronica. One song or two, great! It really rocks. A whole album gets monotonous. The concert was probably cool though.

Imagine it was great fun if you were there. Beginning to realise (with the odd notable exception) that I don't like live albums.

Most sounds the same. Lemmy's voice is very remarkable and uncanny

Ok Lemmy, ich dachte eigentlich keine Live-Alben hier, harter Stoff...c

These guys clearly "rock" and I may have enjoyed this more if I were younger and more into the trappings of rebellion.

Motörhead is repetitive hard rock that is still pretty fun, but man do I hate live albums. Just muddles the production and the crowd noise makes it harder to hear.

Had never listened to Motorhead before, and don't see myself doing so again. Nothing against them, just not my thing.

I don't think I had ever heard another Motörhead song apart from Ace of Spades. After listening to this album, I don't think I really needed to. I would describe the rest of these songs as like Ace of Spades but not as good. This album is some fine and probably influential metal, but it's not really for me.

It was marginal

I'm not a live album type of person. Who needs a slight variation of a song with worse sound quality, and none of the energy from actually being at the show? At any rate, this album was pretty good with the qualifier "for a live album".

All sounds pretty samey to me.

I’m not a fan of Motörhead or live albums. I knew Ace of Spades, but I don’t like Lenny’s voice.

Comparing this to say a Metallica live album, this was not very good. It should not be on this list.

It was just pitiful and a major letdown

I’m so torn with this. On the one hand, I love the way they play. It’s hard. It’s fast. It’s loud. I like that. Kilmister’s voice though? Don’t love. In fact quite dislike. Really ruined this whole thing for me. So, do I give them a rating that reflects their musical/instrumental skills and my enjoyment of that, or do I give a rating reflecting my thoughts on the experience as a whole, which feels more honest? I dunno I’ll see how I feel in the morning.

meh. it all sounds the same. every track.

It's a similar review to the Ace of Spades album: enjoyable for a while, but so samey. The playing is tight and the sound is pretty crisp, but it's not even documenting a single continuous gig. I really don't see what this is bringing to the list that AoS alone wasn't. 2.5

2 not my cup of joe, recording made the sound muddled.

Mostly very meh, it just all sounds really similar with just a wall of guitars and thrashy drums. 4/10

Fast and frantic. If you've heard one Motorhead song (Ace of Spades) you've heard 'em all. Here is two hours of that.

It's standard Motörhead, not really improved or spoiled by being a live album. It's OK. Better than listening to Vernon Kay.

I just feel like a live album is never the best showing from any artist, even artists I really enjoy.

I understand why a live album can be considered a "must listen," I really do. But even if the performance was legendary, there is still something missing from just listening to the live recording. Actually physically being there for the show is a big part of the experience that no live album will ever capture. Any time one of these comes up, I feel like I am missing out.

Music for gimps and leather daddies, of which I am neither

Not my bag. Perhaps a good example of its kind.

Not my style. Solid lead guitar riffs, but they seemed to get repetitive

“Ace Of Spades” is one of the best rock songs ever made and I’ll love Motörhead forever for making it. But Motörhead is like the poor man’s AC/DC, and I can only handle so much before I hit my limit. At least when I’m sober. I listened to just the 11 tracks from the original album, and there are like five songs that start exactly like “Ace Of Spades”. That might have been a fun tease if AOS was at the end of the album, but not when it's the very first track. Live albums usually aren’t great, and this one is no exception. I wonder if this album list attempts to use live albums in place of greatest hits albums so it can include influential bands who don’t have a standout album. In this case, the live album doesn’t standout either.

I don't like live albums. Motorhead is not my favorite. That equals 2

Rating: 1.6 Just as dumb as their non-live material and Lemmy is three times as mush-mouthed in person.

Nie wiem kto się bardziej zmęczył - wokalista na koncercie czy ja słuchając tego albumu

una polla como una olla

Metal is one of my weakest genres. I only know some of the biggest hits and that’s about it. I enjoyed the drumming most on this album. The musicianship is outstanding. I just can’t get into the lead singer’s voice. The sound is incredible for a live album. I can’t imagine how insane it sounded in the venue; must’ve blown some people’s ears off!

This is the first album I was assigned and I'm a little disappointed. Hard rock and metal are not my favorite genres to begin with. The songs are very similar. I cannot understand what they are saying. I had to read the lyrics as I listened. All the songs being live is an interesting idea but it gets old quickly. It is energetic and bold but in a way that became so overstimulating it circled back around to being background noise.

Started off promising with the first song. It just sounds like bad variations of the same song after.

Fun but very samey. Best is of course Ace of Spades and also Overkill...which sounds exactly like Ace of Spades.

appreciate heavy metal so much but just cant do it on spotify a live mosh set could be lit tho

This is a very weak sounding live album. Probably the definition of unessential.

It was some decent fun Rating: 2.5

Speed metal. Meh.

Too long not sorry

So the problem with Motörhead is all their songs sound like Ace of Spades. It’s a good sound, but I don’t need a dozen of it

Rather annoying.

Nicht so gut als Hintergrund beim Arbeiten.

Sludgy sound, probably better if you were there

This is one of those live albums that’s doesn’t carry over well.

Good for banging your head

of course no sleep - they are so freaking loud!!!!

Blegh. The studio album was okay but live heavy metal isn’t my thing at all.

Noise. Same ideas in multiple songs.

Lemmy is a legend, but this was not my thing.

I understand listing 1001 albums is a daunting task, but including live albums that are half comprised of songs that are already on other albums from the list feels lazy as hell. Especially fucking Motörhead of all bands

Standard motorhead.

2 hours of a live rock album was just not necessary all sounded the same- mid

Never been a fan of live albums. This one is not an exception. I appreciate the band though.

rock but too much roll

This is #day299 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's to some tight, loud rock'n'roll, baby. As heavy and speedy as it gets, right? Quite possibly my first album encounter with Motörhead, and it's a live album. Not sure that's the best way to meet a band, but here we are. I'm not a huge fan of '80s heavy metal, but I can try appreciating the band's role in the genre's development. I wouldn't mind if this came up on, say, a classic rock radio station, but not more than the length of a couple of songs. Let it be a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to, wow, #day300.

Ace of spades is a banger and have always loved it. A whole album of live motorhead gets a little stale after a while.

LIVE ALBUMS GRRR

I bet being at this show was fucking amazing. Unfortunately, listening to it just ain't. 2/5

The Ace of Spades reminded me of playing a Tony Hawk Pro skater game on playstation 2, but the sound quality made me feel like it was coming out of a gameboy speaker. I would probably enjoy this live but as an album I could not get past the sound quality. 3/10

Was I in the mood for a 2 hour metal live album? No. I like my dog way more than I like his namesake. Not terrible, but def not my jam.

Just not my type of music and a live version is just the worst version of this type of music!

I don’t care for most live albums, mu ch less live metal.

Motorhead isn't great. Motorhead live is even worse.

Live albums are pointless. And Motörhead are just a bad AC/DC.

Let me tell you something. The world did not need nearly two hours of live Motörhead. Especially since a) the recording quality is super low and b) they blew their wad early by putting "Ace of Spades" as the very first track. It's 100% downhill from there with each track progressively sounding more and more similar. The end result is two hours of growling over a bed of fuzzy mess. 2⭐️

Sounds just like the album versions, deep cut Motörhead isn’t really my thing

A pretty standard live album. I like Lemmy's voice but outside of the ace of spades and overkill I could not distinguish a song from the next. I bet this would be fun live, but not essential enough for me. 2.4/5 -> 2/5

There's an irony to the name of this album, because it's so boring it could put me to sleep. I already dislike live albums because the recording and mixing quality is very rarely there. Then add a band who's hits all sound the same and you end up with a slurry of heavy guitars and overpowering drums for minutes on end. There were multiple times I had to check to see if a new song had started because it sounded so similar to the song before it. And it cannot be overlooked that the mixing on this is truly awful. A good studio recording draws attention to different elements of a song as they happen. This album treats everything as equals, meaning the drums often overpower anything happening in the vocals or guitar. It really is a drag to listen to.

There really isn’t anything wrong with this, but it isn’t my thing and I just don’t like it very much. For me, most of the songs sound the same, and I quickly tire of the screaming vocal style. Two stars.

If you like listening to Ace of spades for 2 hours straight then this is the album for you.

Seems sloppy and it sounds like the high school kids down the street in their garage. I've never been much of a Motorhead guy anyway.

I know live albums aren't always going to be great for sound quality, but I thought this one was especially poor. That and the fact I don't really care that much for Motorhead made it a pretty subpar listen.

Boring. In addition -1 point for live version. The only live version I accept is when I am there listening LIVE.

Can see the vision but not my vibe

it's undeniably badass, but also undeniably repetitive. if you're actively imagining yourself in the crowd it's invigorating, but you can't really do that for a full length album.

Ehhhh....ok

It all sounded the same

That sucked. Felt like work the whole way through

Eh can’t say that I loved this but not the worst

didn't hate it but didn't love it

I wonder if these guys ever realised all of their music sounds the same. Maybe not for them, but certainly for the audience. Even Capricorn, a track that is introduced by the singer as "a slow one, so you can get mellowed out" – and it ends up being just as rambunctious, as high-octane, as the rest. An album as exhausting as this hitting #1 in the UK is pretty crazy. Even crazier when you consider the production, which is pretty terrible even for live thrash-metal standards. Everything is messy, manly, sweaty... and for the most part, I'm not into it. I'm of the opinion that the best thrash music comes from bands that normally produce a completely different kind of music. Queen's Stone Cold Crazy is perhaps a top 10 Queen song. And it's slick, ultra-fast, and heavy in just the right places. Much better than this nonsense. Some decent riffs throughout, though. Ace of Spades, Metropolis, Overkill, and Bomber are highlights in that regard (though I honestly can't remember a thing about each individual riff even 5 minutes after finishing the album). The guitar tone is in-your-face and the instrument is actually played pretty well, complemented by decent bass and drums. The singing is so unhinged and terrible, yet strangely perfect for the genre, that it balances out to a middling experience. But it definitely gets old after the first hour. I actually sought out the shorter, 18-track edition of the album (rather than the 29-track one linked to by 1001Albums) because I realised I was gonna have a darn rough time. And, clocking in at over an hour even after a huge chunk was shaved off, it's safe to say 2 stars is being generous. 2/5 Key tracks: Ace of Spades, Metropolis, Iron Horse

Até que é um rockzinho legal. Para um álbum live, acho que deu para pegar a ideia do Motörhead. Gostei de Ace Of Spades e Overkill. Mas não é muito o meu tipo de música

parece tudo UMA só longa faixa

Motorhead Is just fine. Live albums are not. Double albums are not. Sorry.

It got tiresome quickly.

2- Stars (4/15)

Konserter ska upplevas på plats och inte på skiva. Punkt slut!

We had a cease and desist from Lemmy in ‘97. We decided to do a Houmous & Chutney underground gig on the district line. We called it No Sleep Til Hammersmith - we’d never even heard of Motörhead before that. I will say something, Lemmy is an angry little man at times and largely plays the same noise with slightly different tempos. 2.1

i know it's motorhead but the lack of quality in this album just disappointed me, i know it's live album but why then the generator generated this

Live-albumit usein vähä nihkeitä. Kai ihan ok veto.

too loud, too fast

Good stuff

Not my cup of tea

Imagine it was great fun if you were there. Beginning to realise (with the odd notable exception) that I don't like live albums.

Ace of spades is great. Then the rest of the live album felt like "Ace of Spades" knock-offs. Even some of the solos were reused. It being live gave the album some energy but it felt quite samey. Strong 2.

No thank you. I think I prefer the polished sound of a studio album.

I can’t believe they played ace of spades 12 times back to back!

They do sound slightly better live and I enjoyed the first few songs but this was longer than the studio album I think, definitely felt it. They have one trick and it's perfected on ace of spades, no need for any of the rest really.

It seems like all of their songs are versions of the Ace of Spades. Decent enough live, it seems, but I'm not really into this.

Can't believe I've just listened to nearly 2 hours of Motorhead..... It is pretty amazing how similar it all is. I guess if it ain't broke don't try and fix it. I don't think this album needs to be here, not like it adds anything at all to the previous "ace of spades" album we've had and the sound quality is pretty bad. To be fair to them, I bet the gigs were pretty fun if you're a fan, surely they didn't actually open with ace of spades though?? Still think some lyrics are very dodgy. I was too generous last time. 1.5

This would be a great background album (with 2 hours playtime!) for a biker club or bar!

Did not need this much live Motörhead

can't remember now

p474. 1981. 2 stars. Not a fan of live albums, although this one does manage to capture the raw energy of Motorhead on top form. Starts off with a classic and then goes downhill from there. Stick with the studio albums.

Live albums are rarely good and this one is not an exception, but it's not the worst one we've had so far. In my late thirties I'm thinking "Motorhead opening with Ace of Spaces is wild, why is anyone hanging around past Overkill." One time in my 20s the answer was "Cause Judas Priest is on next" and that concert was maybe the drunkest I've ever gotten. There's much better ways to listen to this band than a live album

A lot of these songs were just noise imo. They weren’t doing anything interesting with their writing or performance, and it just kind of felt like a waste of time. I really have no idea how this made the cut.

If you're a Spotify user do yourself a favor and go search for the original Hammersmith Live album. It's only 43 minutes, really no need to put yourself through the extra our tacked on that the expanded version puts you through. I'm sure this would have been great in person but it just all sounds the same. 2/5

I’m really not a fan of live albums. You don’t get the energy and atmosphere that comes with actually being present in the crowd at a concert. And with the best will in the world, this all sounds very similar

There are so many better metal bands and live albums that should be on this list instead.

Not really that memorable. Kind of all just melded into one continues sound. The sound wasn't really bad but it was just loud rock that was hard to distinguish from one song to the next. Not really my favorite genre so I might be slightly biased.

It's fine 🤷🏼‍♂️. Not for me

The first song made me so happy because it’s in girls just want to have fun….but then his voice is low and hard to understand and it all sounded the same to me. Meh

decent enough, but ultimately redundant live album .

Correcto

Waste of space on any list that honors value. Definitely belongs on lists that prioritize volume.

Metal is a chore for me. Motorhead is not so bad though. Lyrics are pretty blah blah blah, but I prefer that over something ripped from a horror movie.

Like most Motörhead albums, this provides decent (if a little same-y) thrash. Unfortunately, like most live albums, it provides mediocre recordings of songs that already have better studio versions.

Lowk fell asleep listening to this

3/10 - It was loud and it was bad. Nothing was very good and I had not heard any of the songs before so there was nothing that I have become stockholmed into enjoying.

This wasn’t for me

Good but not great. Ace of Spades is a favorite of mine, but I could take or leave Motorhead otherwise. 1001 albums and this is the second Motorhead album I have been served up, out of 60 so far. At least it wasn't late 60s white British dudes, but only by half a decade. They rock but this is not a great recording. Two thrashing and distorted stars.

First listen. Ok.

Did not like the vocal. Sounded like he was screaming. Guitarist was good, but repetitive. Not a lot of diversity.

This all kinda sounds the same

Not my style, but at least there's some resemblance of actual music here.

Never heard this album or any Motorhead that I know of. Was actually impressed by the songs, but downgrading because it's a live album. I didn't see why a live album needs to be on this just, especially one where there audience ads nothing to the atmosphere.

This one got old pretty quickly. Poor audio quality, too.

etwas eintönig .. heavy metal halt! habe dann auch nach 2/3 von disc 1 aufgehört zu hören ..

OMG this was a long, tough listen which eventually gave me a headache. I didn't realise how similar Motörhead songs were. Then I realised that they did their best song first and it was all downhill from there. Whose idea was it to have Ace of Spades as the opening track? lol :-(

Was this just one long song? Not a fan of live albums particularly when they go for nearly 2 hours! 2 stars for the first track only, the rest was very ordinary. Why would you open a live show with your only good song?? Also I'm tried of listening to creepy dudes sing about 'jailbait' girls - fucking gross.

Rollo. Me parecen todas iguales.

501st album. I'm halfway there. No sleep 'Til Hammersmith seems appropriate. And yet in hearing to it, I'm reminded that while Motörhead's influence and Lemmy's cool are undeniable and eternal their consistency is a barrier to my listening pleasure. Too many tunes from the same blueprint. So many songs sounding similar. The great Ace of Spades album only got 4 stars from me; the live album reflecting more tracks back my concern only gets 2.

2 hour long one trick pony

The couple songs I already knew from Motorhead were not that great, and nothing really changed with this album. Not sure what was so special with this live recording either

Fine and fun, but one note and the audio quality is poor. Nowhere close to the greatest live album of all time if you include stuff like Talking Heads, Alive 2007, Justice's live albums, and many many others.

I absolutely cannot even begin to understand why this album is on the list. I actually quite like Motörhead, but the recording quality is completely off on this, and the end result is just messy.

Mediocre live album. Really agree that it's the same song repeated. Absolutely did not need to be on here.

I appreciate the novelty of Motorhead but I really don't know why we needed a live version AND a studio version of basically the same thing in this challenge. Admittedly, it's a fun performance and they recreate their songs perfectly live. But all the more reason that we don't need both versions here. If you love it, you'll have a blast listening. If not, do yourself a favor and ignore the more than an hour of bonus tracks.

Rollo. Me parecen todas iguales.

Too fast, might as well be one long speedy song. I know they kind of invented thrash metal but that's nothing to shout about. Extra star for Ace of Spades.

This is OK. Probably give it 3 if it was just this album on the list. But… The Ace of Spade the album is also included on here, a studio album released less than one year previous to this one. Why include both? The list is straight up Kooky Dooks.

So I've grown to enough Metal more and more. However, this band of 80s fratboy rock leaves mush to be desired. Plus it's a live album

No Sleep ‘till Hammersmith I’m partial to a bit of Motorhead, especially compared to their peers. I say that, it’s more like I’m partial to a bit of Ace of Spades and not much else. This version of Ace of Spades is very good, the whole thing crashes forward in a blur of bass drums and Lemmy. After that it is just live recordings of fast tempo heavy metal. It’s not terrible at all, I suppose Lemmy’s stuff prior to Motorhead means he can conjure up some decent hooks and melodies, even if it does feel like pretty much every song is a less successful attempt at writing Ace of Spades again. Iron Horse, Overkill and (We Are) The Roadcrew stand out as being more memorable than the rest. As a live recording it’s decent, some tracks are definitely better recorded than others, but you do get a sense of their energy and on-stage tightness. If you are really into Motorhead I expect seeing them at this time would have been excellent, although I don’t think I’d be that keen to attend one of their gigs. I know this is an early review, but it doesn’t take multiple listens to come to a conclusion. Ultimately it’s fine, it is exactly what it is, I wouldn’t expect to hear anything that interesting or different. While it's not terrible, I’m unlikely to listen again - what exactly would I get out of doing that? 2 does feel low, but 3 would indicate I might have a further listen so I’ll stick with 2. Playlist submission: Ace of Spades ⭐⭐

Why do live albums exist? Especially if there's nothing musically interesting in it?

Ah good another chance to get skeeved out by 'Jailbait'. The 40 minutes of the original release somehow seemed to take forever to get through. Not really sure why this is here, Ace of Spades the album is already on the list, this is just a compilation album with shit audio. One of the greatest live albums of all time, my arse. The Telegraph talks nothing but shit, people should know better than to pay any attention to it.

Ace of Spades is great but the problem is their music is formulaic. Same song on repeat.

Every song is just Ace of Spades!

So Motörhead is a band I like, but I really have to be in the mood for them. As for this album, I really didn’t care much for it, and a lot of it is because I just don’t think they had the best recording quality for a live album. Either way, I would much rather listen to their studio albums than this one.

Sounded like "Ace of Spades" on repeat. I generally like Metal, but never was a fan of Motörhead.

Ace of Spades is solid, the crowd noise makes for a good atmosphere, but between a lot of this blending together and sounding the same and the fact that live albums just don't seem like a great introduction to most bands, this one just wasn't really hitting.

I really like Motorhead, but the live versions of their songs are lacking. The album that should be on this list is one of their studio albums, not this.

I'd rate this higher if they didn't play the same song 18 times.

Ace of Spades 👍 (only song I knew). This got tedious after. Didn't bother listening to the 2nd disc in the Expanded Edition.

I love Lemmy’s voice. The snarling growl is perfect for a rock/metal band. I wish I actually liked the music. It just does nothing for me. I have a bias against angry music mostly because I end up feeling agitated for the entire day after listening to it. I know that’s a me problem but it is my reality. 2/5

I like motorhead but this album isn't great. Its a live album and it never really gets there, you know? Its not bad, but I don't think its a "must-hear" album under any evaluation. 2/5

Ace of Spades was ace, but it was a bit similar after that. Also they didn't go to the Apollo!

Probably an unpopular opinion but I don't really like Motorhead :/

I don't think I'll ever like Lemmy as a vocalist and Motorhead will always be overrated in my opinion, but this was a better offering that the stuff I've listened to previously. Top tracks: Metropolis, Iron Horse

I love the fact that there is a whole band built around one song so hard that they make an entire record of that one song over and over and it makes the 1001 best list. Dont get me wrong i love that song

On this journey of 1001 there have certainly been ups and downs and right angle turns. There is no question there is a lot of energy poured into this live album but the best ever? To me, there was not a lot of variety from one song to the next. Loud intro, screaming chords and vocals, guitar solo and a big flourish to wrap up the song.

Never really got into Motorhead, everyone knows that one song "Ace of Spades" (I knew it from an episode of The Young Ones, dating myself a bit) but I couldn't name another by them, so a long ass live album probably isn't the best way to ease yourself in... Hard rock but hard listening too.

sucked and managed to keep getting worse.

Ace of Spades is a 5-star album that rips from start to finish and I'm sure it was a hell of thing to see Motorhead live, but I don't really see what's added by listening to a live recording of these songs - a bit faster and messier, even more energy, but a muddy sound that turns it all to mush.

It's been said that "Lemmy is god". If that's true then consider me an atheist. It's all he same song

You'd have to be an avid fan to want to listen to the live version.

It was fine. I generally don't like heavy metal, but I didn't mind this. I don't think I'll listen to it again though

It was loud and I really didn't care for the main singer's (yeller's?) vocals. Instrumentals could have been interesting at times, but they got lost in the cacophony of the rest of the noise.

They have some fun, quick songs - but after hearing 18 different Motorhead songs I felt like I heard 3? They all kinda sound the same - but it could also be the live environment? Pretty meh.

Just ok

Aceof Spades and Overkill are great songs, but the rest just blurs into hyperkinetic noise with Lemmy desperately shouting. Sorry.

Another overwhelmingly noisy album that doesn't keep my interest

Listening to this, I guess I'm not a Motörheadhead. Surprisingly, I liked this live album more than the Ace of Spades studio album that we listened to not that long ago. It's a 2.5, but I'm going to round down.

I will say that after listening to the studio album Ace of Spades I was not looking forward to a live album. At least the original release of this did not include “Jailbait”. So that’s something… This was also not a day that I needed this music in my life. I listened to it and am happy to move on from the 44 minutes of muddled guitars and growling.

Ehhh I mean I already had their studio album, which was better than this. Songs all sound the same, and the layout was off, songs were choppy as there went from one to another

1. ace of zpadez - 1.5 2. ztay clean - 1 3. metropoliz - 1 4. the hammer - 1 5. iron horze - 0 6. no clazz - 1 7. overkill - 1.5 8. roadcreuu - 1 9. capricorn - 1 10. bomber - 1 11. motorhead - 1 12. over the top - 1.5 13. in the back - 1 14. jail bait - 1 15. living here - 1.5 16. fire fire - 1.5 17. too late - 1 18. bite the bullet - 1

Only cause this is ANOTHER live album...

This is music for people who wear wrap around sunglasses and leather jackets unironically, and it's 2 hours long.

Almost quit it a few times. Like a drill to the brain of music.

Nothing I would ever choose to listen to. For once, however, I didn’t hate those fast, driving guitars. But how I did not like his voice. Lemmy count the ways.

Motorhead being on this list once is generous. Being featured twice? Especially for a lackluster live album that features some of the same songs we've already heard? All of their songs sound exactly like worse version of Ace of Spades. I don't get it. Clearly the author of the 1001 Albums book grew up in the 70s and early 80s and is blinded by nostalgia.

I’m not sure what it would take got me to give an album one star. This one was definitely not my taste, but I can acknowledge some crazy guitar licks. That takes talent: dedication so two stars for that. It didn’t hurt my ears, but it felt repetitive, so I was more than ready for it to end before it did. So it can’t get three stars, which is what I give background music that I dan take or leave. This one I wanted to leave so two stars it is.

Why would I listen to a fuzzy, muddy recording of a band with muddy ass fuzzy music anyways. All the depth and fidelity is gone

Yesterday, I was bemoaning the fact that I hadn't gotten any eighties albums in a while, and today, I was rewarded with this. Caveat emptor I guess. The only Motörhead song I know is "Ace of Spades," and it was a bit of a bummer that it was the only song on this live album that I was familiar with. It was even more of a bummer that it was the first song, and that after it ended, I was left with over 35 minutes of unfamiliar, live heavy-metal that basically all sounded the same to me. I'm not a huge fan of live albums, and this experience only solidified that feeling for me. I don't understand how an album that's so high energy and full of blasting guitars and pounding drums can still find a way to be so boring. Outside of "Ace of Spades," this album didn't really have a lot going on. I liked that the songs were short, but I hated that these songs weren't all from the same performance, because it stripped away the context of these songs being live in a sense. I really thought I would have enjoyed this more, but this album was a bit of a snooze, and I don't understand why it made this list.

Not my cuppa of tea but they're obviously good at what they do.

Never been huge on Motörhead, and it being live has reaffirmed by belief that they just replay one long song with the same sound. DNF.

A lot of people are reviewing anniversary/expanded/deluxe versions of albums and then complaining about the length or some crappy bonus track. Just listen to only the original album release after looking it up at musicbrainz.org or http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/index. For this one that saves you from having to listen to Jailbait again.

I do enjoy the occasional Ace Of Spades and love the history and tales of Lemmy and company but beyond a handful of tracks at a time it's a lot to take.... definitely a direct line from here to the imminent thrash genre, although this has more a nod to hardcore and punk than anything else. Those genres aren't faves - although I do appreciate how tight this 3 piece was in a live setting and oddly despite its aural assault it's not that hard on the ears (although the album has a bootleg feel to it and is a little off-putting at times in headphones - almost sounds like it's in mono outside of drum fills and the crowd noise...?). Lemmy's Rickenbacker bass sound is dirty-great. Just don't love the tunes in aggregate so I'll enjoy a few cuts here and there but overall put it on the shelf only to be brought out for special occasions, dinner parties, etc. 5/10 2 stars

If you don't like Motorhead, you won't like this. I don't and I didn't. WHy this would be on here along with their other album with some of the same songs is a mystery. There's nothing groundbreaking or even different about them playing live.

feel like i was in a mosh pit getting my ass kicked just from listening

Quality of the recording is quite poor, bootleg quality. The variety is quite limited and all have similar style. I suspect seeing them live would be good judging from the energy levels and speed of songs, but it doesn't translate well where I am, looking out on a cold morning with the trees swaying gently in the breeze.

Rollo. Me parecen todas iguales.

One overplayed but decent rock song followed by 17 more attempts at the same. And while I realize it was a different era, jail bait is gross. Also, love albums are only good for fans 90% of the time. This is one of those times.

Just not really my vibe. Could imagine bopping around to it live though I suppose. Simpson reference: No (only in the non-cannon comic books)

Not my kind of music

Just not for me.

I just cannot get into Motörhead. I appreciate that they were very influential for heavier genres of music like thrash. I just cannot get into the lead singer’s voice. This live album wasn’t the best. The sound quality is pretty muddy and I didn’t think the performances were too outstanding.

I’ve never been a big fan of live albums, and this one unfortunately did not change my mind. I’m sure the energy would have been fantastic live in person, but it did not translate on recording for me. I also found most songs to sound very similar, which I think is probably just Motörhead’s sound and not specific to this album. Highlights: Ace of Spades, Iron Horse.

as a teenager I had a Lemmy poster without ever having listened to Motörhead that I loved to take edgy pictures with. seems like now I'm paying my dues.

Highlights: Ace of Spades, Stay Clean. In a nutshell: dad rock/hard rock, but live. If given the choice between this and Motörhead’s fourth album The Ace of Spades, I’d pick No Sleep til Hammersmith. Motörhead sound like a band better heard live and in their prime. Overall: 5/10

Echoing many of the other reviews, this sounded like one song with different lyrics. It was fun the first few times, but then it became a background beat as I exercised and didn't draw my attention. It was a good exercise beat, but I couldn't tell what they were shouting most of the time.

NO MORE LIVE ALBUMS PLEASE

The whole album was very samey. Maybe I would've liked the songs a bit better if I had listened to the studio versions before but on this live albums all songs sounded the same. This kind if hard rock/heavy metal gets tiring after around 10 minutes...so it's not my jam.

It's the same picture!

Love me some Tony hawk pro skater but can’t save my love of mororhead goes much beyond that

One trick pony 🐎 but sure it can rock

i don't understand how it's possible to have such poor quality with live albums, time after time! talk about unfortunate. but i suppose since plenty of other live albums have poor quality, i won't stress too much about it. regardless, i felt no sleep 'til hammersmith was lackluster. beginning with what's still their best performing song, the album was on the right track, but the rest of the songs offered nothing unusual or different. motörhead's energy is high, at least.

What needs to be said about this album has already been said, so I'm going to keep it brief. This is a low quality live album. There is nothing special about the production. You can't even really make out any audience engagement (and again, what is there is low quality). As far as the way I feel about live albums on this project goes, that's already three strikes. Now, about Motorhead's actual music. The songs all sound the same. "Ace of Spades" is their ace song -- pun intended. Everything else just sounds like a rehashing of that song. This album is definitely not a necessary inclusion. If anything, it's a tiresome inclusion.

Note: the original LP is 45 minutes. The links here seem to give you the extended versions which are really for the diehards. It’s quite a good record of the speed and noise of Motörhead at their peak. I prefer it to other metallers as it’s slightly more rock’n’roll, but it’s still pretty noisy! My taste is more AC/DC towards Iron Maiden in this area of hard rock.

Live albums don't do it for me. Think they have rightfully died off.

I don't know? Some of these songs kind of slap, I guess, but the sound is so muddy that I can't really grab hold of any particular melody, lyric, or instrumentation. This is a perfectly acceptable live record that I'm sure classic metal fans would enjoy. I can't say that I'd revisit it. But I'm glad I've heard it and have now heard more than one Motorhead song, which I guess is part of the point of this list.

a solid live performance of songs that are too noisy for me lol

Pretty fun, fast paced. A couple songs just sounded like Ace of Spades but I didn't hate it. Probably wouldn't go back and listen tho

Vor allem lauter heavy Metal. Wenig Genuss möglich.

The recording of this album is really hindering it, sounds like it was taken using a 10 dollar children’s microphone. Anyways just another grunge Brit band nothing crazy here. 1.8

Don't like live albums much. Jailbait problematic.

that sure is some hard rock

Live metal isn't my favorite :/

I anticipate some poorly-recorded high energy nonsense! And I mostly right! All these songs sound the same!

You win some, lose some It's all the same to me

Niet mijn ding

I struggle to believe there are many live albums that are better than their studio counterparts, and this is definitely not one of them. All their songs sound like various iterations of the Ace of Spades, which is a great song.

Didn't love this outside of Ace of Spades

No thank you.

I get it. Just don't like it much.

Meh, live äänitalllenne ei tuo mitään lisäarvoa tämän bändin osalta.

En ymmärrä vieläkään hypeä

I don't have much more to say about Motorhead, other than repeating my rather unfavourable opinion of their other record on this list. I'm not a fan of this band, and it feels like all the songs sound the same to me - one big variation of Ace of Spades. Not the worst ever, but I just cannot stand it.

Good music for going to a concert but nothing I would ever listen to in any other situation.

This is the second Motorhead album I've gotten in like two weeks. Really makes you wonder about lists like this. So you're telling me that of all the recorded music in history, if you were going to pick 1001 albums that everyone should hear... TWO of them would be from Motorhead? Come on. Granted, the song "Ace of Spades," is in the classic rock canon. But does a person b really need that deep a dive into Motorhead's discography? That said... This album. It's fine, good high energy rock. Lemmy isn't a great singer but his voice fits the songs. The musicians are tight, obviously super well rehearsed. The songs are good, though they start to sound a bit samey after a while. At one point, Lemmy introduces a song by saying, "This is a slow one, so you can all get mellowed out." Then the band starts into a song which is almost the same tempo, and basically sounds almost the same, as everything else. I guess the guitar riffs are less busy than usual, so that counts as a "slow one." The recording quality is kind of mediocre and muddy, which probably doesn't help. Overall I liked this better than the studio album Ace of Spades. I don't care about all the hours of content from the various expanded editions, I just listened to the track list from the original vinyl release. I think a person could just listen to that and learn everything they need to know about Motorhead. But I bet it was cool to be at these shows.

The biggest problem I have with the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list is that it has too many albums from the same artists. I have a bigger problem when live albums of the same artists are also included. I think this album is redundant, because it does not add anything new to the band’s discography. The songs are basically the same as the studio versions, except for some minor variations in tempo and vocals. The sound quality is also not very good, and the crowd noise is sometimes annoying. I have already rated Ace of Spades 4 stars out of 5, because it is a classic heavy metal album with catchy riffs and lyrics. But this album does not deserve more than 2 stars out of 5, because it is just a repetition of what they have already done before.

Always start your 2 hours set with your only good song. Always.

I find myself agreeing with some of the more negative reviews. I'm struggling to see why this is the best live album ever made when the sound is rough, the lyrics almost unintelligible at times (though that's largely due to Lemmy's gruffness), and most of the songs sound like early riffs on the Ace of Spades. I 1000% see the origins of grunge and pink in Motorheads sound in many of these songs, but the sound quality feels fairly bad here compared to things a decade or two later. Muddy Banks of the Wishka, How the West Was Won, and S&M all strike me as better live albums than this.

Is this 1 song? Live albums are cheating

The opening song for the live concert was Ace Of Spades, which is great, but do we really need to hear the rest of the show?...no.

Exactly what you’d expect from a live Motörhead album - energetic, fast and loose, and incredibly repetitive

I like something quiet and melodic. 5 stars compared to the average rap album but overall best left to the perpetual teenagers.

YouTube stats for the original version of this album: Ace of spades: 13M plays. The rest: 3.5M between them. That sums up this album. Also, haha to the person who listened to the 2+ hour expanded version!

It's a very good live performance of the same song over and over and over and over and over again

Bold to open with their biggest song, and it’s a cracking rendition. The drumming throughout is amazing, real powerhouse stuff, but it all blended together a little after a while. I think I’d need a few more listens to get the hang of the songs and differentiate them.

Motörhead isn't terrible, but this live set seems like it's just a greatest hits hodgepodge with no coherence as an album itself. Still some good songs on it though

Too long

Probably a fun concert but with no visual its pretty dull

Better than I expected but really don't care about live albums?

Not really for me

I feel like the internet age has made live albums irrelevant. I hope they have at least. These guys shred but I don't need 2 hours of it. Thank god its over. Not listening to the outtakes #sorrynotsorry. Wasn't bad, just repetitive and I don't see how it fits into this list

I can't say that I like this but I think I would enjoy being in the band and playing it live. I would not enjoy being in the audience but it would be fun to play. I doubt this makes any sense.

I guess one of the joys of seeing Motorhead live is that they're going to sound pretty much the same they do in the studio. No overdubs or Autotune for Lemmy. This collection highlights the sameness of the songs "Overkill" is reminiscent of "Ace of Spades" and "No Class" borrows the riff from ZZ Top's "Tush". Anyway, I'll deduct a point because I don't think I've gained anything from listening to this album that I didn't already know from the first LP we received.

This is good, nothing against Motorhead, I'm just voting low as I think Live albums are a lazy way to squeeze a "best of" into an album list.

I am aware of Motörhead and I've heard the track "Ace of Spades" before but probably not even the full track. Nothing else was familiar from No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith. For a live album, it is a good recording. By the fourth track, the album was already getting long. It was a push to get all the way through. Half-way through the album, I was having a hard time distinguishing between the tracks. Almost at the end "Capricorn" and "Bomber" finally provided something a *little* different to listen to, but not enough to save the album. I did not enjoy this listening experience.

Ok for what it is. Not my cup of tea. 2/5

Meh. Live albums suck

18th April 2023 Listened in the morning working from Cox and Dan’s. Stayed at theirs last night with Thai and Chelsea Real. Whirling dervish of pounding drums, thrashing guitar and screaming vocals. I can feel the sweat and the squeeze of the crowd. 2.5 if I could.

The live album captures Motorheads energy a lot better than the studio albums. But it gets repetitive after a while.

Pretty fun, energetic.

Not a huge Motörhead fan, and this live album didn’t do much to move the needle. Still sounds like Motörhead. 2/5.

They have like one good song. Why do we need THIS live album on the list and Many other good live albums are not. 2.5/5

Today is my 200th consecutive day of reviewing albums. I was hoping for a great album to mark the occasion, but based on my previous Motörhead review my hopes aren’t too high here… But still, fingers crossed! Let’s be optimistic! Songs I already knew: Ace Of Spades, (We Are) The Roadcrew, Jailbait Favourites: Ace Of Spades, Motorhead To be clear, the songs I already knew were from the previous album I heard. It’s possible that there was more crossover than I’ve written above, but Motörhead fall pretty heavily into the all-songs-sound-the-same area of music. To give credit where it is due, they do sound very right on this live album, and Lemmy sound just like on the studio recordings. However, this music just isn’t for me. I don’t think I’m really the target market and that’s perfectly ok. I was bored after around 6 songs, and there were will 12 more to go (I didn’t listen to the bonus tracks that make this album “deluxe”). I still cringe at the song Jailbait though. The lyrics are genuinely awful.

It is a live album. Ace of Spades is still the best song. Then several songs that sound similar but are not as good. I didn't need to hear it. I tolerated it.

Too rowdy for me

They do rock hard, and I can see that this would be a great capturing of their live show for fans, but for some reason their style has never appealed to me. 2.5 stars

Impressivley loud and powerful, but mostly just loud. And Lemmy is a epically bad singer, er shouter. The callout the road crew is quaint and clearly the vocal highlights. There's no real reason to include this. Sure, it's loud and the audience noise softens the edges a bit, but it's mainly noise. And we're okay celebrating Nazi insignias? Shouldn't we know better by now?

Unfortunately this one just didn’t do it for me gang…I didn’t dislike it but I felt like it was just alright. I was disappointed that it felt pretty textureless despite it being a live album. I’ll revisit it but it was a pretty bland experience for me 5/10

Varsin kyseenalainen valinta listalle, vaikka ihan tiukkaa menoa onkin.

Huoh miks näitä livelevyjä pitää olla. Studiolevy Motörheadilta oli ihan hauska mut en ymmärrä miks tää nyt oli niin hieno keikka.

Great first tune, rest is a bit samey and it's not the best quality for a live album. 2

'Vet, Motorhead!' dacht ik nog even, maar dit is een typisch geval van: Je zal er wel bij moeten zijn geweest!

Not a huge fan. Noisy but I didn't get excited by it.

Too heavy for me
