Comfy for the background.
Listened Before? N Not as terrible as I had assumed just by the description and the cover. Typical seventies easy-listeneing stuff. Not a standout but still some good songs here. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: (He's Got) The Whole World in His Hands
Disco interessante, mas sem nenhum atrativo especial.
Pleasant -
Why is this on the list? Dion has some great music in his catalog. This album is not special in any way. Hurts the list.
Prefer the second album packaged with it. Quite a Neil diamond vibe
This album seems to be very famous, but I hadn’t even heard of Dion before listening to it. As the record went on, the songs started to feel a bit too similar for me, and I found myself losing interest — it just wasn’t really my taste. That said, Runaway Man was one track I liked.
Some good songs here, but the cover of He’s Got the Whole World is kind of a jumpscare
the music was fine, but man that album cover set me up to expect the completely wrong style of music
Too easy listening for my taste
An unexpected one to crop up given that this isn't one of his early rock n roll key albums (like runaround she) this is later wall of sound syrupy crooning mid 70s with Phil Spector. The first track Born to be with You is worth a listen (incredible, I love songs where it takes over 1min 40 secs for the vocals to start a la sound and vision) whatever you do but elsewhere his voice doesn't quite have the rich depth to suit the setting, but it did warrant a few listens to try and get a grip of it. Not unpleasant but doesn't set the world on fire!
At its worst a bit dull, but at best you could see why it inspired Bruce Springsteen.
Nothing special 6.81/10 3/5
***An ok album, easy listening
Dykkede ikke ind til den her med høje forventninger men havde faktisk en ret good time! Kan ikke helt forklare hvorfor jeg synes det virkede!
I listened to a fair amount of oldies when I was growing up in the late eighties and early nineties (shout-out to 98.7 K-LUV in FW), so I have some fond memories of hearing songs like Dion’s “Runaround Sue” and “The Wanderer” while sitting in the backseat of our 1987 Honda Accord. Other than those two songs though, I don’t think I’m familiar with anything else Dion sings. I see that Phil Spector produced this album, so I’m curious to see how the recording industry’s most notorious murderer melded with Dion’s sound. Born to Be with You was fine overall. Dion’s singing was good, and there were some really good arrangements on these eight songs. The raw emotion of Dion’s singing, paired with Phil Spector’s lavish production created a really interesting contrast. Sometimes, those production techniques worked really well, and elevated the album, and other times, those techniques created some head-scratching results. I thought this album was pretty even and cohesive, but towards the end, it started to wear on me, as I felt that these songs were doing the same thing musically and emotionally, but not doing it any better than the earlier songs on the album. Additionally, a couple of songs felt pretty long and somewhat repetitive. Overall, though, this was a pretty good seventies pop record. Some notes on some individual songs: The title track really threw me for a loop. When it first started, I thought this album was going to have a bit of a country sound to it, and then it shifted into that big and bold Phil Spector sound. I liked the saxophone playing, and the strings were really good too. The sound was beautiful overall, and I enjoyed the vocals. My only beef with this song is that over the course of nearly seven minutes, it didn’t really say much. The storytelling in the lyrics of “Your Own Backyard” was really great. The music was good too, but not as good as the first two songs. The strings on “The Whole World in His Hands” were great, but I really didn’t care for the echoing effect on the vocals. The overall sound was a bit too muddled for me, and it doesn’t fit the tone of the song in my opinion. However, the backing vocals were really great. “Only You Know” had a doo-wop touch to the lyrics and the vocals, but musically, you could definitely feel Phil Spector’s touch. It was really interesting to hear the raw emotion of the vocals and the elaborate production working together.
Pretty good. Not really that into it though.
I got into this one
he had a good voice but didn’t blow me away
Dude has a good voice and great vocal skill - and I can hear his influence on voices in the ensuing years, voices I didn't much care for. So, this is good eork, but, for me, a real bore.
It was decent
VERY much a Spector production. I can see why Dion distanced himself from this album.
Sonically dated but a few good tracks. Doesn't sound like a Spector project for sure. Also shows that Goffin was always better with King.
Not for me, but quite interesting.
I was not excited for this going into it, but was pleasantly surprised by the end. Though I'm a sucker for adult contemporary
Sándið á þessu rosa áferðarfagurt en litlir hápunktar. Rennur ljúflega í gegn en er hálfgleymanleg.
I’d never heard of Dion or the album Born To Be With You before today, so I was looking forward to giving it a spin this morning. I found it to be a really easy and enjoyable listen — the kind of album you can put on, sit back, and let wash over you. I even ended up listening to Streetheart straight after, as it’s bundled with this album on Apple Music. While Born To Be With You doesn’t have any major standout tracks, it flows beautifully from start to finish. It’s produced by the vile Phil Spector — an unfortunate fact — but his signature “Wall of Sound” production style definitely adds to the record’s lush atmosphere. Dion’s voice really impressed me: soulful, reflective, and full of warmth. I’ll definitely be revisiting this one. Favourite track: Born To Be With You – a lovely, heartfelt song. Least favourite track: Make the Woman Love Me – a bit dated and slightly creepy. Album artwork: A fairly standard cover, nothing remarkable.
I was born in the 80s and all music that I can remember being played is something similar to what Dion delivers in this album. Very cheesy lyrics and melodies. . A 3 star album to me.nok in the background but not somemthing I would choose to listen to. Also the album is over an hour long, so yep, it doesnt help as well.
++: Born to Be with You, Your Own Back Yard, (He's Got) The Whole World in His Hands, Only You Know, Good Lovin' Man +: Make the Woman Love Me, In and Out of the Shadows -: New York City Song 7,3/10
A much better album than I expected it to be.
Probably need to give this one another spin some time. I liked the fuzzed out Phil Specter songs most.
Rock n Roll
Average album by an above average artist.
I liked this a lot for whatever reason. It was soothing and pleasant. The style varied but had soulful parts, folky parts, and plenty of others mixed in. There weren't really any standout songs on it, but it was a good whole-album listen. It didn't do too much for too long, which I think was a strength. Had the album been longer it may not have been as easy to listen and enjoy. My least favorite song on there was probably the Whole World in His Hands rendition, but still liked it here better than a more traditional version. Songwriting credits list a number of people as the writers other than Dion (who was only listed on a few tracks), so I'll take some points away for that. It also was a bit easy to zone out on given there weren't many attention-grabbing moments on it. In sum, I found this to be a strong, complete album even if the songs didn't stand out on their own very much. The style was pleasant to me and I enjoyed it. I'd rate it pretty good as a whole. Overall: 3.5/5
Nice but didn't move me.
This didn’t click with me in the slightest if I’m honest about it. Well sung and produced, but I wasn’t too into the songs.
Not a good start--the yacht-rocky Born goes on much too long. And then too much string intrudes regularly. Why does every song seem to be treading on too much? An attempt at retro-pop that feels way out of place for 1975.
The opening track did a disservice to the album, IMO. The cavern reverb sax and ... I don't think it was the strongest song in the set. I never quite came all the way over, so it treads the middle for me, but there's something here.
Bland. 2.5.
I really like Dion and this was not the best example of his work. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5
Uh... It is not like this was a bad album or done badly or over commercialized or anything particular. I suppose I can say in the good old fashioned way "I just didn't get into it." And I don't think really that it is just me being harsh or not open minded or whatever. I think it is more to do with my common focus forgetting something: Music as I try to rate it is often on a scale I make that is BAD to GOOD. (ending in great). But this to me is like "elevator music" or the concept of it. It is background that I am entirely indifferent about. I don't automatically go "OMG listen to what is playing!" at a grocery store, only when it IS something I groove to will I do that. And there it is. Not a negative judgement, it played I listened. Meh.
Offebar esch das Albom wo of Spotify verlinkt esch grad zwöi I ein, also einersiits s Born To Be With You, aber äbe au Sweetheart. Obwohl die rächt noch anenand usecho send, tönets doch rächt andersch. Ech bewärte do debi aber trotzdem s Doppelalbom. Born To Be With You esch rächt a folk music aglehnt. Mer werd settigi zwar eigentlich relativ schnell langwiilig wels klassisch Jo eifach e Sänger, e Gitarre ond velecht e Schnörregiige esch. De Dion hed do aber das no chli usbaut. Ned nome chömed verschednigschti Instromänt vor, är wogt melodisch au meh als es för Folk klassisch esch, was de teilwiis zo rächt guete Lieder füehrt. Trotzdem esches halt emmer no klar Folk ond ziehd sech trotz experimentalität rächt it längi. Gwössi Motiv erennered debi rächt a anderi Könschtler and Stöck, wie öppe de Billy Joel.
Some decent stuff, some was not nice to listen to. I’ll be charitable with a 3
Favourites: Born to Be with You, (He's Got) The Whole World in His Hands, Only You Know, In and out of the Shadows, Baby Let's Stick Together
Liked this way more than I expected to - it's big orchestral soul, saccharine soft rock emotions, totally bloated arrangements and maximalist production, but the melodies are there, the performance is solid and the mood is chilled out and fully relaxed; it just feels nice - a warm bath of album.
Alright, average-y sounding older rock
Was skeptical going in not being familiar with Dion other than Runaround Sue and other early 50s pop songs. I listened to the first song and then didn’t pull it up again for a couple weeks. But, on a quiet Sunday morning I put it on and listened straight through it and found it pretty enjoyable. Some surprisingly honest lyrics and rich arrangements.
Easy and digestible
Phil Spector klarade inte av att sabba detta. Kanske lite slätstrukna raka låtar, men fint sjunger och svängigt. En trea i alla fall.
The definition of middle-of-the-road
This was pretty good, middle of the road, pop/rock. You can definitely hear the Phil Spector production. That said, I don't see what makes this an essential album.
I liked this, but I think I will have forgotten most of it by tomorrow. Some of this sounds like the solo music John Lennon was making with Phil Spector during this same time, especially "Only You Know".
He's got a nice voice and I liked the melodies and harmonies.
Average easy listening in every way
as spicy as table salt, but objectively good music
It offers a great introduction and leaves us with wonderful sounds. In my opinion, I feel like it's missing something.
This grew on me over a couple of listens. I like some of the songs. I’m not sure the Phil Spector sound is doing them any favours though. 3.5
Pop album from the mid-1970s. Phil Spector's production is the best thing about it, the music itself is nice, smooth, but not too memorable.
Not my favorite dion album but it's a good listen
224/1089 - This is for sure baroque pop.
I'm not sure how much I can talk about Dion here. I mean, until **today** I had no idea he even had an album on this list — or, for that matter, that he did anything beyond the days of "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer". Like, if I have any relationship with Dion, it's knowing him as the guy who made those songs and very little else. Maybe that Meghan Trainor made a mockery outta of "Runaround Sue" with "Dear Future Husband", but that's about it. No, if anyone's the star here, it's noted murderer and record producer Phil Spector. Yeah, Philly boy's back again. Haven't seen his ass since my group got that Christmas album he produced. And I gotta be real, I was kind of expecting the worst coming into this album. From what I was reading, Phil way overstepped his hand in producing this, and everything sounded like it was playing at half speed as a result. Dion himself would disown the thing and call it "funeral music." So here I started wondering to myself, "Oh, gawd, what am I getting myself into?" And it's not like I don't know that Phil doesn't always have the golden touch: I despise the cover of "Baby, I Love You" he had the Ramones do essentially at gunpoint, and I've heard a lot of the Leonard Cohen album he produced. Heck, I prefer the "naked" remix of LET IT BE to Spector's version. I just hadda wonder: is this new brand of Spector overreaching with his Wall Of Sound, or...? Here's the thing. It's not something I wanna admit in the face of Spector being a convicted murderer — and seriously, fuck him for that — but, y'know, I can never be anything but honest: when it's done right, I actually really like Spector's production work. And on this album, it's mostly done right. Like, yeah, it can absolutely be overblown sometimes, and there are times where it probably would've been better to keep things more stripped back... But I'm the last person who'll shit on over-production, so it's not like I have too much room to complain. I will say, though, as a result of Spector's production style, Dion himself kind of gets lost in the shuffle. Y'know, if you couldn't tell from how much I've been talking about Spector versus Dion. But on the majority of the album, which Spector produced, it's easy for Dion's voice to become just another brick in the wall, so to say. Like, there is actually a really sharp contrast between these songs and the two that Spector **didn't** produce, "My Own Back Yard" and "New York City Song". They're the only ones that sounded like "Dion" songs, where I could actually take a second to appreciate him and what he brought to the table. Heck, "New York City Song" is probably the best track on the album. The rest, meanwhile, is good, but I wouldn't say it rises too far above a mellow kind of fine. I enjoyed having it on while I was reading, but I'm not too terribly wowed by it. Besides the two non-Spector tracks, there wasn't really anything where I felt the need to listen too closely. Well, except for "(He's Got) The Whole World In His Hands", but only because that's the one song where Spector's production didn't work for me. I mean, with the whirrling, flangerized backing track... I have no idea what he was trying to do here, and it's the closest I'd come to calling any song on here "funeral music." Strange funeral that'd play this song, though. But, ah, yeah, I'unno. This album doesn't really make much of a case for Dion outside of those couple of songs I already liked, and as much as I can dig Spector's production style, it feels pretty "bog standard fine" here. If it weren't for "New York City Song" I'd be feeling a lot cooler on this thing than I am. It's absolutely not something where I understand it's something I **had** to hear before I died... But I can think of worse ways to spend a half hour. Still, it's a better Dion-related project than "Dear Future Husband" was. Now **that** would be a bad way to spend half an hour...
Good music to play in a lift.
Nice vibe but a bit plain
Not the greatest album, but one of the greatest voices ever.
Easy listening vocals, reminds me or a subdued Van Morrison with less horns. Perhaps the last whispers of doo-wop and 50's oldies combine with meaningful lyrics. Little bit of blues, even a hint of early Bowie.
Nicer than people say - but I won't be coming back to this record.
Not Bad
Has some decent songs that had an almost Lou Reed feel, but then it had some songs that were just background music.
Ho-hum melodies
Sounds like something my parents would have listened to. FYI, I'm 65.
Innocuous, inoffensive, and mostly forgettable. The definition of mid.
Really solid album - just missing that special sauce to knock it up to a 4
Had never heard Dion before this. I did like some of the tracks. Some of the tracks were kinda random. Title track is my fav for now. 3/5
Way better than the album art would lead you to believe. This might be more of a Phil Spector record than a Dion one.
Dug it. Definitely a mood listen. Soothing voice to listen to, and once I really leaned into the lyrics, I grasped why it's on the list.
Kinda surprised I didn’t recognize more outside of the song on the bear. Happy I listened but not compelled to deep dive
Fine for what it is. 2.7
this isn't terribly bad, but it also isn't a very remarkable album. in a way, it reminds me a lot of john lennon's 'rock n roll' album, but maybe that's because it's a spector-produced legacy act singing oldies tracks from the mid-70s. the production is a little all over the place on this one, even for one of the all time great producers (even if he is evil). dion's voice is nice but listening to this makes you feel like you'd rather listen to 'runaround sue' instead.
Every fibre of my being knows that this album sucks ass, yet I still can't help but admit it is at least a little bit pleasant to listen to. A begrudging 3/5
Another nice surprise
Good
Perfectly fine. Enjoyable but not memorable, not something I could see myself returning to. Bumping up to 3 stars because it's enjoyable
Ihan ok taas. Parhaat: Only You Know
a couple of standout songs, with an overall vibe very similar to John Lennon and George Harrison's solo work of the early to mid 70s, helped by the presence of Klaus Voorman on bass
Not bad. Promising.
I thought Dion’s vocals were good, liked a few songs enough with Only You Know being the standout for me. At times it reminded me a lot of Father John Misty without the humour. I read that Phil Spector produced this album and was drinking excessively in studio and Dion wasn’t pleased with how it turned out, I think I gotta agree. I’ll give his other work a shot but I didn’t much care for this. 3 stars
I don't really get the hate for this album, I'm glad I listened to it
This was fine, enjoyable to listen to…but nothing to love or hate. It is surprising though, since this is the guy that sang Wanderer. Just not sure why it’s on this list of 1001. Apparently even Dion himself wasn’t too wild about it. Once again, I give three stars.
Ein alter Rock'n'Roller (The Wanderer), der mehr zum Singer-Songwriter mutiert ist.
I found it old fashioned and boring.
3.5 rounded down
Some nice songs but nothing here really stood out to me
2.6
List keeps churning out names I’ve never known. Part of my enjoyment then is reading up on them as I listen to them. Dion was nothing special for me. Pleasant in its effort but generally not for me. To read up on him though was a delight and learn how his influence can be seen still
Born To Be With You is an album that is pretty good and got better the more i listened to it. I didn't really have any expectations as to how this would sound considering that this album is a pop album and that genre can have albums that sound very different from each other but it mainly does seem to go for a doo-wop sound. The songs themselves did sound pretty good and all had a nice vibe to them which i would always enjoy. This album wasn't all too long either so it never really felt like it was dragging on. It is a good album but i still feel that it's formula would go on to be improved by other bands like Primal Scream. Best Song: Make The Woman Love Me Worst Song: Born To Be With You
This is nice. This takes me to a simpler time. I can picture kids at the pool, and parents grilling. No internet. No doom scrolling. Just humans existing during the best years of the US. Makes me long for an older time. Great vocals and instrumentals.
This guy strikes me as one of those super talented, extraordinarily technically sound studio musicians, the kind that can turn any song into any genre, can do Dolly Parton in grunge in reggae in standard country, even a rap, but had just a little bit too much ego to be happy in the second chair, but, at least for me, not enough of that magic that usually comes with legit star power. Nothing really to argue with here, except that it’s basically forgettable.
I enjoyed this, the production was nice and varied. I could see myself coming back to some of these once in a while. Had never heard of Dion prior to this site.
VERY Spector, which has it's ups and downs. Only You Know remains the highlight
Your Own Back Yard stood out Album is a good capture of overall seventies pop production to that point.
not enough sax solos in music these days.
I honestly can't decide if I like it or not.
Nice 70s pop rock
I’m mad that I got 5 tracks into the Streetheart album that is paired with this in the 2001 rerelease. Much better at 35 min than what I thought was going to be 79.
Chill. Never heard of Dion, but didn't hate in the background. Wouldn't by the record though. 3 to be nice.
This was an alright listen. Decent enough background music. Nothing stood out in particular.
I am tempted to give this a 4 because I was so pleasantly surprised.
A good album, I liked Make The Woman Love Me, Baby Let's Stick Together and If I Can Just Get Through Tonight the most.
Nice
öppe d'hälfti glost (1h 18min isch mer scho chli z'lang) «Only You Know» isch en riese song, känni vo de serie «Ozark» und hani scho paarmal glost im letschte jahr, abgseh devo hed mi kein andere fescht vom hocker ghaue aber solidi 3 weizehalm woni da im muul han weni das lose
Boring
3/5
Sometimes you get an album on this list with the explanation, "No one thought much of it at the time [in this case not even the artist himself], but later there were some people who liked it and, well, now you must hear it before you die." I've learned that's not a good sign. Nevertheless, this album is... well, it's OK. But to get to 3/5 I have to round up and be in a pretty good mood. And today was a good day. Moving on...
Я не понимаю хейта (здесь и на rym). Нормальный чамбер поп, даже в чем-то современный. Не очень разнообразно, но сука когда вы слушаете свой тридцать блюзрок альбом, вам нихуя не надоедает. Лучшая песня - Only You Know.
Reminds me of Elton John, but less flashy. Which kind makes this very average.
Kind of a slog at parts. “Only You Know” is great. The “I am off drugs now” song is a bit annoying and self important.
great great voice, love it, although this album is unnecessarily long, its enjoyable to listen to and i appreciate that, i like how it livens up as you go into the album, queen of 1959 gives me madness vibes if they were american, would give it a 3.5 if i could
I liked. Phil Spector :)
Reminds me of something my mom would have playing while cooking. So there are some nostalgia points there. Overall a relaxing listen
Not bad enough to make me want to shoot a woman in the mouth, but you never know.
Not bad per say. Every track sounds like when you flip on to the 70's radio station, listen for a sec, and then go back to scanning the stations. Just kind of mid for me... I would listen again if I just wanted some chill background 70s music that I don't know the words to. 2.5
Nothing exciting, but nice easy listening. Had never heard of him, but obviously a talented songwriter.
Well, that was a struggle. A plodding, stumbling dinosaur of an ElPee. At his best, the Phil Spector Wall of Sound approach creates monumental songs. Here, it just seems to be an effort to smother the album, creating a stodgy MOR mess. (No, I'm not a fan.)
first listen decent
The guy who sang runaround sue tries to be billy joel
7/10 Fave track: New York city Song
This was fun easy listening but it didn’t have any of my favorite Dion songs
Day 22 - nice sound nice music but a bit forgettable #albumsky #musicsky 3/5
pliis pikku... pliis pikkutyttö.. pliiiiiiiiiiiiiiis... pliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis... pliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis.. pliis....nektariinia.......pliiiiiiizzzzzzzz...
Never heard of this artist before, but it was definitely produced by Phil Spector. I generally enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but there were still some duds.
Felt like I was listening to nothing, I can’t say that it was good or bad
Not bad, if you’re into oldies style rock & roll. Nothing amazing. Nothing terrible. Enjoyable in a not so exciting sort of way. Like the musical equivalent of going to Chili’s. 2.5 ⭐️ rounding up 🤷🏻♂️
Meh
ok
I’ve always enjoyed Dion’s doo-wop era, so I was curious to hear Born to Be with You. It’s interesting that this one got rediscovered in the ’90s and picked up a cult following — probably more for its backstory than the music itself. For me, it was fine. Nothing particularly stood out, but it wasn’t bad either. Just kind of… there. I’ll bump it up a star out of respect for his earlier work and the fact that some of those older tracks found a second life in Fallout. Favorite song: "Your Own Back Yard"
It’s a nice album and it’s really nice background music. If the best compliment is that though, why must it be 1001 albums I must listen to? There are better albums that grab your attention and keep it. This is a filler album on this list, filled with filler music.
Shades of George Harrison - liked it.
Pop na granicy country. Wokal z lekkim zaśpiewem, dość przyjemny. Płyta się nie dłuży, każdy utwór jest melodyjny i chwytliwy. Ale jednak od topowego albumu oczekuję czegoś więcej. 6/10
Was hoping to like this better as it has a song I really like, “Your Own Backyard”, written by Dion and covered by Mott the Hoople on their best album, Brain Capers — well worth a listen to the whole album, but you should at least listen to Mott’s version of YOB for comparison.
Really felt like a prototype to much better albums later on. You get glimpses of better music in the middle of a song and then it’s done. Some decent songs on this one but it isn’t really enough.
Born to listen to you because the website told me to do so.
This was a pretty cool album for some classic baroque pop. When I played it this morning, I wasn’t really vibing with it, but coming back to it now, I’m enjoying it a lot more. I wouldn’t say it’s something I plan to revisit often, but it’s definitely worth adding to the list of albums to randomly revisit in the future.
Kinda good, but not in the mood today :/
Surprisingly very enjoyable. Could imagine myself driving down an interstate somewhere in the US listening to this. 6/10
Good folk/pop.
i guess? hmm was a little bored by it not sure why? but it was like fine / good?
Meh. BTW, the album linked on Spotify was too long because the rerelease combined Born to Be With you with another album, Streetheart.
Elton John, de-spangled and unblinking—for the first half of the album, anyway. Initially quite taken with how Dion was leaving it all out on the field with that earnest, ‘60s belting and soaring brass, never mind the year 1976. But the album kept going ... and going ... and ultimately became easy listening, in the indistinctive sense.
Is Dion a good singer? I’m still puzzling over this. Could really have done without the Phil Spector bloat in the background.
I heard it, I enjoyed it generally enough as background music. Nothing particularly interesting or moving.
really grew on me as it went on. tbh it sounds like mr dion is really phoning it in most of the time but you know what - i kinda respect that. deducting a point for being absolutely too fucking long.
Not to be confused with Celine Dion. There is no stiffness in this guys suavity. Every song is a pseudo romantic song or a heartbreak song. My generations version of what I classify 'Dad Rock.' It's almost like Yacht Rock with out the specifics.
Lots of americana vibes. I like it. Very smooth and easy. Nice.
Streaming services will combine this with the additional Dion album "Streetheart", but the actual tracklist for "Born To Be With You" is only 8 tracks, ending with "Good Lovin' Man" - this is an artifact from a CD reissue that combined both albums. Anyway, this was fine.
It started off okay with the a good selection of bluesy rock and then the album descended into something like a cross between an elton john and an Cliff Richard album. It got a bit boring. 3.5 stars
Interesting and better than I thought it would be
Well this is a departure from runaround Sue. But really enjoyable, actually. Easy listening for sure, but he’s got a nice voice. Not something I’d put on to listen to often, but an easy 3 and a contender for a low 4.
People will shit on this mainly because of the Phil Specter aspect, but it's really not a bad album tbh. Also, check out the tracklist for the OG album and remove the unneeded tracks that were from a completely different record. 3.5/5
Now this is some really easy-listening music. Was it great? Not really, but I can think of worse ways to spend 35 minutes. Mid-3.
Definitely too long but didn’t mind the sound much
Actually pretty good. Born To Be With You (song) is a jam
We enjoyed the soulful country twang of this. Dion is not an artist we have encountered before but the music was enjoyable.
Classic country soul pop Spector sound. Knowingly schmaltzy ballads. Some throwaway or overly derivative, some lost classics (Only You Know). Very difficult to rate - but I'm going high three.
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would
The basic idea of Dion plus Spector sounds great and I really enjoyed this. Add to playlist: Make the Woman Love Me hmmm that title has not aged well.
The reviews on this are unnecessarily harsh. It wasn't the best album I have ever heard but it wasn't terrible.
Brother you are NOT Steve Jobs 😔✋️
J’ai été surpris par le style pop de cet album, m’attendant plus à du folk. Malheureusement, comme la majorité des albums double, la sauce s’épuise sur le deuxième disque, me laissant ramolli sur la note finale
Great production Decent listen Can't complain 3 for the lads
decent. Not sure how much I will listen again, overall easy listening.
This was pretty easy listening and I feel like it had hints of lots of different 70s sounds. Overall a pretty enjoyable record but I’ll likely never listen to it again. The lyrics and melody of Feliz Navidad can be sung pretty well to Queen of 1959 haha.
I like the album, but I doubt I’ll return to it much. If you’re a fan of any of his other work, I bet you’ll enjoy this. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-born-to-be-with-you?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true
begging someone who knows anything about songwriting to tell my why it felt like i already knew all of these songs? unsure if i actually enjoyed this or if my pattern recognition brain was getting dopamine hits from being able to predict what came next. that being said, i WAS in the right mood for this. feels like someone synthesized a new album to directly fit into the era of radio i grew up on
Pretty chilled out decent music. Would need to listen again
Alright, nothing to crow about.
Very soulful album. Good singing and coherent smooth vibe throughout. Good songs that I could see myself listen to if in the mood.
This wasnt that good. The best song was Born To Be With You. The worst was Good Lovin Man
It's kinda nice, not my usual genre. Will I listen to again: 1%
Terrific Spector production. I thought the opening track was epic but it dip dip after that. Interesting though.
Dion, you son of a gun
I un-ironically love Make the Woman Love Me. On the surface it seems kind of corny, but I found myself grooving hard. (He's Got) The Whole World in His Hands is another standout here. The song itself isn't new, but the arrangement is fairly novel. Feels like the whole thing is sort of drunk due to the half-speed(?) drums with all sorts of artifacts on them. This had its moments, but ultimately falls into a space that I don't often feel like exploring. I feel like the production was really good and the songs themselves were also strong, but the only things I remember after listening are the two songs I mentioned above. 3 / 5.
Pretty much just straight up feel good music. I like getting albums like this that don't blow your socks off but are just a really nice 35 minute listen
I saw another comment on here that says it sounds like a discount version of Elton John. Agree. It's not bad; it's just not Elton John's quality.
Why? There’s nothing wrong with this album, but what did it do to warrant inclusion? This is the definition of just okay.
OK
Not too bad for mid-70's fare.
An hour of the same song
This was....fine.
It's difficult to find this on the various streaming services I have access to, but somebody has strung together a YouTube playlist of this fairly middle of the road rock and roll. I think I recognise quite a bit from samples, but I reckon this is probably going to be a Phil Spector thing rather than anything good.
Ok
This is a nice album. There's nothing wrong with it. The problem I have is that it isn't the pinnacle of its type, nor does it push boundaries or explore new territory. I'm left wondering why it's on this list. It's just a nice album.
It was just alright for me, The co-packaged Streetheart was the better album, I think.
i like dion’s 60s stuff that he’s known for so i was curious about this, it was better than i was expecting. still not really my thing but hard to be too mad at yacht rock
It's ok.
I actually kinda enjoyed that album, but I’m not rushing back to play it again anytime soon 60/100 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The first song I want played in the series finale of my LIFE. most of the music sounds ok. 7/10
Not bad! I’m not sure how to describe this one. Doesn’t seem to fit cleanly into any genre. Not something I’d return to but it was OK! FYI if anyone is reading this before listening: the original album is only 35 minutes long! I think the link took me to some super long edition but the original track listing only has 8 songs.
Twang from the first notes.
This was pretty interesting. I enjoyed it like I would looking at a painting/
Almost 2, but it's Dion.
Don't think I've ever heard of this guy, or knowingly heard any of his tunes - I dunno, maybe I've heard some of his doo-wop stuff? (Which, now that I think about it - there should really be some straight up doo-wop on this list, right? Kinda crazy that whole genre gets stiffed by Dimery, though not, I suppose, surprising. 😒) Anyway, this is fine, I guess - didn't really grab me but didn't rub me the wrong way either. Won't object to it reappearing but unlikely to seek it out again. Fave track - uh, "Your Own Back Yard" maybe, for the storytellin'.
Dion has a great voice. Not thrilled with the production here. Way over done. I think these songs would be better stripped down to a rock-n-roll combo. None of the songs are faster than mid-tempo, so with the production it feels a bit like a slog. 3 stars.
Good songs shite album cover, looks like snape
A mid-career album from the wanderer. Not much to get excited about but harmless in the end.
I miss the Doo Wop
Decent I guess? Had some good vibes, but nothing I will return to most likely. Only listened half-attentative when working, but it didn't cut through the noise.
I mean, I think I’d just rather listen to The Beach Boys. Not bad tho 6/10
I think I was mostly disappointed because I was expecting something more similar to his 60s hits, but this wasn't bad. Not really something I'd seek out but it was pleasant enough even if a little too cheesy at times. Nothing remarkable though.
I wish I loved this album more, because I love Dion, but it verges on sucking at points and then goes to gloriousness the next song. Dion is vocally great but lyrically hit or miss. Hard to rate for me, but I think 3 would be appropriate. As someone with tinnitus I enjoy the wall of sound. Blocks out the ringing
I’ve had some pretty rough patches in my many weeks of doing this. I would definitely group this week in with those. It’s not that any of the records have been objectively horrible. But I’ve found them to all to be very average, and bordering on something I don’t enjoy. Like, they each had only a handful of songs I actually saw as highlights. And just based on the cover and artist, I assumed that I would be continuing the streak. It’s an unfortunate aspect of the way I perceive artists. And I wasn’t seeing people saying any glowingly positive things. So I was ready for a stinker. But when the sax kicked in on the first song, I realized that I might have been wrong. And as each song went by, I started to get confused. Sometimes I really struggle to understand where the hate comes from on some of these albums. I’ve heard some amazing records that I find are receiving far too many negative comments and reviews. But isn’t that really just the beauty of music? It’s subjective for a reason. I initially thought this was gonna be a super flashy and over the top case of mid-70s pop music. The kind that was basically previewing what pop would become in the 80s. But it’s actually far more adjacent with art pop, soul, and gospel. Which is honestly one of the most underrated genre combos. And I think Dion did a really great job at putting these ideas at the forefront here. It also utilizes this “Wall of Sound” idea that I was not familiar with until today. It’s something that was created by the producer Phil Spector, who I guess happens to be a convicted murderer, where many instruments are layered on top of each other and are all playing at the same time. I wondered why a member of Primal Scream credited this as an inspiration, but now I see that it’s potentially one of the earliest examples of neo-psychedelia and shoegaze. So I think it should get some bonus points for that. This is a pretty average record, and I’m not blown away by it. But in comparison to the rest of what I’ve been listening to, it’s pretty solid. Rating: 6/10
An interesting blend of influences. I heard some country, pop, love ballad, classic rock, and some blues. Didn’t know what to expect but it was enjoyable especially the last track Streetheart
Mellow singer-songwriter
Better than I expected. It wavers towards the end, but not bad.
Like listening to grandpa's radio on a Friday night.
Celine Dion Dion Dion Dublin Dionne Warwick Dionny Osmond 3.4
nice soft rock vibe. i had never heard of Dion. Tucker said he’s music in the fifties.
3.5
Pleasant surprise.
Enjoyable album, good songs.
Not terrible but not good either. Why is this on this list ? Nobody seems to have liked it when it was released not even the artist himself. The fact that one musician I have never heard of from a band I have never heard of either doesn't seem like a good enough reason.
Kinda my vibe Fjm-esque
Wow! OK so I’ve recognized several of the songs on this album but never heard of the artist. What a singer, and l assume he wrote some or most of these songs. 3.4
5.5/10
I liked it, although it’s a bit anemic, like he’s phoning it in.
First half of this album was insanely boring. 2nd half picked up a bit and a handful of songs were decent Album was way too long for my liking though. Bit of a snooze fest 3 ⭐️
couple of my friends love it, i thought it was aight
A noble trainwreck. The song choice is scattershot, never settling on smooth adult pop or something deeper and more confessional. There's little in the way of Dion or Phil Spector high spots or moments of flashing their skill. Everything feels....functional? Definitely worth another listen, but I'll give it time
This was a pleasant surprise
So much of this album almost works I can’t put my finger on exactly why it doesn’t.
Pas un mauvais album, mais je me demande comment il se démarque de beaucoup des albums auteurs-compositeurs que j'ai entendu par le passé. Un bon moment mais rien de mémorable. 6/10
Pretty good. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would
Great voice. Mediocre songs. Love "The way you do the things you do" but this version is too slow. Overall, a perfectly pleasant album.
interesting, appealing but not quite captivating cant believe this is the same guy who hugs em and kisses em 'cause to him they're all the same
Lovely stuff. I'd never even heard this artist's name until this, but I've heard runaround Sue millions of times in my youth.
Mediocre.
classic
First thought was Who? Second thought was What an extraordinarily 70s record sleeve. Then I started the album. It is indeed lush. Some of it reminds me a little of Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue. Title track and Whole World stand out. Some of it disappears into the background. Not bad. Solid middle score. Second half of this link on Spotify is the following album, I stopped at track 8 here.
it never really occurred to me that the doo wop guys would continue making music and evolving. this was nothing special but it was kinda cool
This is alright. I think I prefer his 60s stuff though.
After listening a couple of times the careful arrangements become apparent but the overall impression remains rather dull.
I liked it. Perhaps it's more Spector than Dion to me. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it's the thing that it is.
Not too spectacular but pleasant throughout Very hard for me to believe this is the Runaround Sue guy
It was kind of boring at first but I got more into it as the album progressed. Kind of reminder me of John Lennon solo stuff?
middle of the round
I didnt expect to like this much. I ended up enjoying a decent amount of it and it never got bad, just not to my liking. I feel like a 3 is almost too low but a 4 is too high. It is an iron man of a 3
Some good stuff on here. Some. It so good stuff on here. Some weird stuff on here. It’s so interesting to me how certain performers do their thing in this way and are both super famous but also not as famous as they “should” or at least could be. Weird.
Not a huge fan ...never heard of this dude
id heard the name but never the music. enjoyed it, not for everyday but worth another listen
Listened to the eight original tracks. Sounded like standard ‘70s Neil Diamond type pop. I’d rather hear Dion’s older stuff like Runaround Sue.
The first half was kinda mid but the second half was really good I thought. Enjoyed it a lot
This isn't bad, and I get why Jarvis and Pulp were into it - lumbering grooves that sound like proto-Pulp singalongs.
expected a lot worse
Found it a bit bland and unmemorable, not bad just nothing special
Ok
Not bad. A bit sleepy.
Nice album in another singer-songwriter - style.
‘Twas fine. But I do prefer the Runaround Sue golden oldies version of Dion better than the John Lennon wannabe version.
It's OK I guess. I'm not a Phil Spector fan boy. Dion sings well.
Not bAd
Pretty good in parts
So not Celine Dion, another one... it seemed like pretty generic 70s MOR AOR. OK, but nothing stood out to me
Svosem ágætt bara.
some pretty good tracks. too many tracks overall.
ya know, it was okay. Not spectacular. 3.5 stars
Music that doesn't require too much thinking — soft, easy to digest lyrics and backing. felt like i was on a cruise ship. i enjoyed.
'Born to be With You' is a good example of an album that takes some time to get into. The first few tracks left me a bit cold. It was only about halfway through listening that I clicked with the production and the impressive vocal talent present. Specifically the song 'Only You Know'. It was enough to make me go back and listen again with an open mind. I can't say that I loved every track but definitely a good record with Phil Spector's fingerprints all over it.
Местами похоже на саундтрек к Mafia2, только это скучно слушать.
Decent background music but not something I'd go out of my way to listen to.
Not my usual vibe, bit too slow (though it got more fun towards the end). His voice is very good though. Enjoyed born to be with you. I listened to it while playing games and it was nice to have it in the background. Pleasant tunes pleasant vibes. Big fan of only you know. Would I re listen to it - probably not, but I did enjoy my one listen of it. Much prefer his runaround sue album, I didn’t realise how many of his songs I knew and liked until I skimmed through his other music. Desperately wish I could give it a 3.5.
at first from initial impressions i was going to give this album a much lower rating, like a 2 because it's not my usual type of music. but as i left it on i found it to be more enjoyable, just some nice background tunes with a good vibe. nothing spectacular though.
Alright I suppose but not that noteworthy. Another low 3* ?
This was OK actually. A bit bland but there were bits that were enjoyable.
I gave this a chance and I has high expectations. I like Dion's early doo wop period and his later singer-songwriter folky stuff is great too, but I couldn't get into this. Not bad, but not for me.
It seems I'm a bit of a sucker for the wall of sound sound, as I quite enjoyed this. Nothing particularly special, but sufficiently floated my boat.
I wanted to like this album. Dion has a great voice and excellent songwriting skills, but Spector's heavy handed overproduction undid it. I couldn't finish the album.
Nice album, probably wouldn't listen again
ничего особенного
Pretty overproduced - trying to add some zhuzh to fairly lackluster songs (especially on the A side) but the B side has a little more life. Not sure how Primal Scream was influenced by this. It's okay, but not something I'd put on often. 3.4
Yacht rock.
Good melodys. Sounded stretched a lot and fairly repetitive
Just a bit meh to be perfectly honest 3/5
Leaving aside the upturned crusts of the first and last tracks the filling was a surprise. Very much of the americana of the time. Good that the production did overpower the songs. Pleasant but not overly memorable.
Straight meh
sounds good to my ears
Well, Dion certainly has been a prolific artist! Although this album generally doesn't do a lot for me, at least at first listen, I can hear how good these songs are as far as composition and performance go. It's a matter of personal preference and style, not at all about how "good" he is or the songs are (in quotes because I don't like to categorize art as "good" or "bad", or get into rating and ranking art against other art; instead, I care about how I experience the art, regardless of what it is -- final note: the more I study music, the more interesting most music becomes as an experience for me).
Need to listen again. Like his voice
Basically 37 min of generic chill love songs
SUCH A LONG ALBUM…and so slow, each song feels like 3, so that def bring the ranking down, but his voice and the songs are beautiful so can’t fault him there!
60's heartthrob (Teenager in Love). Album released in 2001. Not bad - I didn't mind listening to it for a while, but bland. The songs all sound the same
romanticon
Muss früher n banger gewesen sein, heut eher nicht mehr so
Only You Know is an absolute tune.
Not bad at all. Enjoyed listening to it. Came out in the 70s and I like that era. Nothing sounds out but the album was pleasant to hear. Good tunes and great singing and melody.
det här skulle kunna växa till en fyra
Surprisingly very good.
This was fine. feels like this inspired Tom Petty to be amazing.
-never heard of dion -he has a good voice that is nice to listen to -so far im not super feeling these songs -these songs feel a bit average to me LOL -they aren’t bad they just aren’t really doing anything for me -i’m genuinely a little bit bored -one or two songs have had some spunky upbeat vibes that i have enjoyed -okay you showed me what love is is kinda a banger -i do like the vibes of lover boy supreme -the guitar is cool too!!! -overall this is a 3 star album for me
