3.1 2x catch up over multiple days finished 2/6
Day 151 Quite enjoyed this even though didn’t understand a word 6/10 Highlights Do you compute Luau
Started really strong but I started to lose interest by the end. A bit samey
Heavy punk rock with some interesting musical ideas.
This was another fun one that I had never heard of
Okayish 90 alternative
Som ok rifts and jams but no ooooos or ahhhhhs. 2.5 gonna round to 3.
This is pretty good. But I have to dock it a star for the vocals and the length.
Not bad this. First time I’ve heard it, but suspect it would repay repeated listening. If you like grunge, punk, emo you’ll probably like this
I suspect that this requires several listens to fully click. After 2 listens I'm intrigued but haven't fully got it, yet. 6/10
Pretty good album from a band I've never heard of before and probably never will again - it gives strong Slint vibes but doesn't quite reach those Spiderland heights. Fav tracks: Here Come The Rome Plows
Cool band. Reminiscent of Fugazi, who I really like. I don’t tend to enjoy scream vocals.
There's something here. Atmosphere, mostly. Even though the vocals sound a bit like the singer went into another room and screamed as loudly as he could, the general sound tends to get better as the album goes on. Sadly some songs tend to drag on a bit too long, but overall more interesting than I expected - especially since the opener seems to be the weakest song on the album.
3.5
When this first kicked off, I wasn’t sure I’d make it through the whole album. But it slowly grew on me as it went along, getting better the deeper it got. I still don’t see myself coming back to it much, but overall it ended up being a good listen.
Punk Noise Rock.
I liked some songs and others did not, a very hit or miss album.
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Turns out dissident guitar playing + being screamed at for 70 min is not a good cure for a headache. By the third listen I was starting to get it.
Noisy. Okay.
Pretty lively and interesting throughout
Drive Like Jehu rock really hard, perhaps for slightly too long
Rage Against The Machine, but make it more indie.
“Four-chin teller?” Indeed 7/10 3 Stars out of 5 Great at what it does. Controlled chaos, disturbing dissonance and hard business. Not a lot of structure in each song, but that’s not a bad thing. Lacked things I usually like in songs, especially anything colorful or yummy. On first listen I don’t really remember any of the songs.
I enjoyed the interesting guitar and time signature switch ups. Got bored at the midway point but that’s probably just my problem 3.5/5
Damn good post hardcore music. I hear tremendous Deftones and shoegaze influence. Combined with a new found apathy and agression that would later distill into emo hardcore. This is a cool album. Its got enough influence that helped create subgenres of hardcore and post hardcore, emo and even post hardcore revival as of the late 2010s. It does all this while strattling the line of metalcore pretty delicately. I shrugged when I saw this but I believe this was a good one for Wednesday.
A surprising find. Not the best start, with neither "Do You Compute" nor the "Rome" song worth a second listen. But as the songs got a little less frenetic, the drums and bass line became more distinctive.
Never heard of this group. Sounds very abrasive and thrashy. Not as unbearable as some of the noise rock and thrash metal records out there, but some of these tracks seemed to never end. It allows the bass and drums to shine I guess. Rick Froberg's howling vocals were another highlight of the record too.
Aires a The Mars Volta a ratos.
2.7
Rippin. That’s the only word I can think of to describe this record. Rippin
Storming grunge opener, reminds me of Vasco Era, Vines, Nirvana. The track Golden Brown is exceptional and added to my heavier playlist. Love the solos. I am knocking off points for too much feedback on Super Unison, not good for headphones! Not sure it will get repeat listens but perhaps next time I want to reach for this genre, it would be here. It's maybe as good as it gets for this genre. A 3 out of 5, only missing a 5 because it wasn't quite consistently high quality right through for me and I wouldn't listen on repeat.
Meh, whatever. The first track really seems to think it's making an Important Political Statement, so of course the album gets docked points for that. But "Geisha Boys and Temple Girls" is fun.
When I read that this was a forefather to the emo sound I got really excited, but it’s missing a lot of what I like about emo. It’s more energetic than I was expecting, and I think the vocals didn’t work as well as emo vocals tend to. Still a fun listen though. Favorites: Luau, New Math, Sinews
Quite liked this in parts tho it’s clear why they influenced as opposed to being seen as great in themselves.
I enjoyed this. Not heard of them before
Feels like a throwback but not because I've never heard this before but I did like it but too long
Surprised that I didn't have this. Some of the music is really good. Some of the vocals, not my but can't fault it really.
Muita dissonância. Sinews foi a música que mais gostei
I'll give a 5/10, but I would round this up to 3/5 for the reason that the album didn't offend me.
I've always heard people love this band but I don't like this kind of music.
Had no idea music like this was being made in 1994.
At the Drive-In, but slightly madder. Cool rhythms and overall attitude.
Loud American Football. Cool but not really for my old ass. Belongs on the list though.
For a record that was released in 1994, Drive Like Jehu's 'Yank Crime' sounds very ahead of its time, possessing a post-hardcore sound that would help define a large swathe of the alternative/pop punk scene of the 2000s. However, its another one of those albums where 'longer' doesn't necessarily mean better. With shouted vocals, razor-sharp guitars and a crashing rhythm section, 'Yank Crime' has all the ingredients of a chaotic hardcore record, with not a lot of breathing room within its frantic energy. It's certainly clear that Drive Like Jehu were all about energy and chaos. I definitely hear the Fugazi influence on this album, especially in the guitar tone, and the unhinged shrieks of vocalist Rick Froberg signal a way forward for anguished, more emotional vocals in the punk scene, giving rise to the eventual success of the emo movement in the 2000s. However, it's quite unfocused, and the instrumental passages often meander on aimlessly [especially in longer songs such as 'Do You Compute' and 'Luau', as if the band weren't quite sure how to finish each song. The shorter, sharper tunes on this record are quite decent though, especially 'Golden Brown' and 'New Math', and if the album had trimmed some of the aimless jamming, it could've been a tighter record. Very influential to the emo movement, but a bit too bloated for me. Best songs: 'Golden Brown', 'New Math'
It’s average angst. Needs a bit more salt.
Solid but not that interesting to me.
I'd heard of this band and thought I knew what kind of music to expect, which was not this noise rock awesomeness. Sounds like it should've been produced by Steve Albini. Favorite track: Here Come The Rome Plows
It's ok. Very loose and chaotic and noisy. Parts of it really aren't vibing nicely with my tinnitus, but I appreciate the attitude. Maybe it helped pave a way for a certain type of music, but I don't think it's particularly remarkable outside of that.
Bijvoorbeeld Weezer en Jimmy Eat World. 7/10 Highlights Super Unison New Math
Mielenkiintoinen tuttavuus. Moni biisi kuulostaa tutulta vaikken oo ikinä kuullutkaan.
Uusi tuttavuus itselle. Mukavan energinen meno.
3.75
failing to see the significance. railing angry guitars and he sounds like an angry J Mascis not bad though
Who said punk songs have to be 2:30? I actually appreciate the long form format and how it allows for them to stretch out and jam a bit. Lead singer’s voice is great. This album was a nice surprise.
Bueno

Oft cited and finally listened to...solid 3 stars
I really wanted to like this more. I listened to it a while back and wanted to give it another dedicated listen before rating it, as something peaked my interest. Some great guitar moments and some lovely rumbling bass playing. It got better for me after the first 3 tracks. Not sure whether the vocalist calmed down an octave or 2, or I just got tuned into him a bit more. ‘Super Unison’ is the stand out for me, and the first few minutes of ‘Sinews’ showed another side of them that I’d have liked to have heard more of. But even after another listen, there’s something missing for me. I think it must be the vocal style, and not enough change of pace like Sinews promised.
Quality stuff. I do like a bit of U.S. hardcore, even if it is 3rd generation stuff. I was intrigued to learn there was a musician in this band who went on to form Rocket From The Crypt, I think he made a wise decision as there is no commercial mega value in this. Its not the best example of Hardcore from this era, some songs seemed to drag a bit, others galloped along like they should. But I enjoyed it.
The reviews of this are pretty rough, and it starts off as quite a difficult listen, but I like punk, and whilst this is more hardcore than punk it settles down into a pretty strong album with some good punk / post punk sensibilities. One I think that will benefit from more listens.
Ok it's got some great things going on. The drums and bass did their homework and brought it. The lead guitar was out there, just going for it. I appreciate that. I lost the lyrics part. I get a lot of the genre is screaming lyrics at you. Some bands can make that shit work. These folks kinda faltered a bit on it. It's worth it to listen to some of it. If it grabs you cool, if it's not, it's ok to walk away from this. I'd rather listen to just the band rock out and jam personally.
Reminded me a bit of my own band, only more dark and emo. Felt a bit monotonous and drawn out after a while, but not entirely bad
The name vaguely rang a bell from the 90s, but didn't really know what to expect. Solid noise rock, it turns out. Bit of punk, garage rock or grunge and a touch of metal. Feels that there was maybe a lot of this stuff around, but it grew on me after a second listen. Not outstanding maybe, but enjoyable enough at times.
I thought I liked difficult noisy things but this had me questioning that. I’m the problem here though, not these guys.
It’s ok
Whoa. Some cool bass jammies.
I enjoyed the droning guitars and screams felt like a stepping stone to 2000s aggression rock, maybe screamo? The album is a bit long and doesn’t always mesh well together. I’ve learned from Fugazi and minutemen that I like this music in bite sized songs. But otherwise a solid album. Close but not quite a 4
I probably would’ve loved this when it came out, why didn’t I hear it?! It’s a solid 3 now though.
I don’t typically listen to hardcore or punk, but enjoyed this one. Some great tracks and some others that weren’t for me. Even a bit of prog thrown in for good measure. Enjoyable listen
Cool background story, nice album but for me not much replayability.
Energetic and raw. Music for a mood, not my usual mood though. Allright for a while but went on too long. 3/5
It's not bad, I just don't know why I should listen to this instead of the thousand other records that sound exactly like it.
Just as I had never heard of Rocket From the Crypt, I'd also never heard of Drive Like Jehu (whose guitarist formed Rocket From the Crypt about the same time). I can't say I particularly glommed onto this album or their style, but it's well-produced and occasionally kind of fun, especially with "Do you compute" and "Super unison". A bummer that there are a few 7-to-9-minute songs that drag on faaar too long ("Luau" and "Sinews" in particular). It's *very* odd to read that Drive Like Jehu was considered an "emo" band (at least according to Wikipedia; the "1001 Albums" entry only references their more obvious punk influences), as this album bears almost no resemblance to the likes of The Cure or The Smiths or their ilk, which probably just shows my ignorance of emo's roots more than anything. It's hard to imagine much overlap between fans of Drive Like Jehu and fans of what emo became associated with. I'm not really a fan of either, though, and in retrospect I enjoyed Rocket From the Crypt more, having now listened to this alternative.
Didn't enjoy this one as much, Golden Brown was pretty interesting and Sinews was quite a cool psychedelic song, overall 2/5
Nice sound overall, some older punk
Favorite Track: Golden Brown
Oh, what's this? Looks interesting. Keys check it out. Oh, I think the authors just trying to be cool. This is like a less interesting At The Drive-in. Maybe a precursor, looking at the release year. Send like I missed the boat on this one back in the day. A lot to like, but not great. Easy three.
Powerful and gripping
So this is emo. So many music styles I never listened to. This has been a real education for me. This album is very interesting musically with its odd time signatures, polyrhythms, outside melodies and lyrics. Little too intense for my tastes, but intriguing nonetheless. Well played, boys!
While its quite good. There are a number of annoying artistic choices on it. Starting a song with 20 seconds of horrible feedback is just wanky. There's some beautifully haunting riffs, New Intro sounds like something you'd hear on a post rock album from the mid 00s. Good but too long and wanky at parts
Solid enough, but doesn’t want to keep things interesting.
I’ll have to revisit. I don’t dislike but it didn’t grab me either, fun mix of genres.
Loud good guitar on here comes the rome plows do you compute is awesome - more violent okay computer luau is really cool Super unison just edged my ears to completion at the start
I like the instrumentation and melodies, hut can't totally get behind the screamy vocals. 3.5 stars
I think this is pretty good, and I can see why it's in the book -- it definitely helped spawn a lot of new subgenres like emo and math rock. It's not totally my thing, but I did enjoy a few of the songs -- "Here Come the Rome Plows", "Golden Brown", and "Super Unison" are all pretty cool. I didn't really like the longer songs, which I found to be a bit plodding. 3.5 stars.
i liked the guitar. not their voices.
Decent album. Some songs the instruments overrode the vocals and sounded kind of messy and chaotic. Sinews and New Intro were probably my favorites off it.
Warmed up to it a little as it went on
I really like the sound, not sure I like it on repeat for 50 minutes
actually gets better the deeper you go into the album
This is my second listen, and I will admit to having totally forgotten everything about it after the first listen. It’s noisy, angry, postmodern punk and very much in the vein of Fugazi. I think I probably would have enjoyed it 30 years ago, but now it’s just too much noise about nothing. The album is okay, but the tracks are too long and I can’t connect with them. It obviously influences a lot of bands going forward so probably deserves to be on the list, but I just don’t like it much.
gotta admit, more stuff I liked here than i disliked.
I would like to like this more, the sound is pretty close to there... but it just does not really stand out to me. It all kinda blends together.
They are obviously extremely talented at doing their thing, but their thing is mostly not for me. This is a 3 and not a 2 because there were some real standouts on the album.
Here Comes the Rome Plows 3 Do You Compute 3.3 Golden Brown 3 Luau 3.4 Super Unison 3.3 New Intro 3.2 New Math 3 Human Interest 3.2 Sinews 3.5 Score: 3.211111111
High energy, solid album standout songs: Here come the rome plows New Math Sinews
Even if it isn't my thing necessarily, it is still pretty solid and doesn't deserve as much hate as other albums on this list.
No los conocía. Correctos cuando se tranquilizan.
En overraskelse
Very early post hardcore stuff, definitely inspired future bands in the the early 2000s
A crazy mash up of punk, metal, grunge and pre-emo. Each element is done well enough. Thrashing, whiny metal guitar with the punk rhythms and drums is actually pretty good. The vocals have a Kurt Cobain quality to them, but if he grew up in San Diego and was a spoiled brat. An hour and ten minutes to far too much for this album, and with 2 songs going over 9 minutes and 2 more going over 7, it becomes very tiresome. There are some really great moments on this album. The last 2 minutes or so to Super Unison (one of the 7+ minute tracks) was great. The band was firing on all cylinders and the vocals were minimal. I think the music is a 4/5 but the whining, screaming, screeching vocals bring it down considerably. I personally can’t stand that style of “singing,” never made sense to me. Who wants to be screamed at? It’s hard to understand the lyrics too. I find myself enjoying the music a lot, wasn’t sure that’d be the case but the vocal really killed it for me, particularly at 70 minutes. If this had more of the “tame” vocals like on track New Math, I could give this album a 4 or even consider a 5. But it’s a 3. Typically a these type vocals would bring it down even more, but the music is so damn good. 6.6/10 #45/1001
Screamy, but okay. Enjoyed listening to it in the afternoon at work, in a job that's been driving me crazy. Not bad, but it's served its purpose and I doubt I'll ever listen to this again.
This is much harder than my normal listening, but I found it energetic and enjoyable. At times they sounded like Nirvana, and at others Metallica. I cleaned the shit out of my house while jamming, which is a fantastic use case for an album.
Saved the last track to my 90s Bangers playlist, but probably won't relisten to this one.
Cool and chilling!
This is one of those albums I knew nothing about before listening to it, and I'm inclined to listen to it again. I've gone through almost 700 of the 1001 on my list and I easily liked this as much or more than half of those. Put your headphones on and turn up the volume for this one.
Very technical, for sure, good at layering multiple off beat beats together, with a ton of speed too. I like the guys scream too. Definitely influenced 30 Seconds To Mars. I liked it but it did go on for a while on some tracks
I always have high hopes any time I check out a new noise rock album. Like, I'm no stranger to guitar noise, and I'm always looking for more of it! But the problem is that most noise rock doesn't want to do noise in the way I want to hear noise. Like, there's distortion obviously, but instead of a whole lot of screechy feedback blanketing everything, they tend to want to play fast and loud and pummel the listener with sound in a different way. Plus, half the time they end up being an angular post-hardcore band, which is something I've never really learned to like so far. As you can imagine from me talking about that here, Yank Crime ends up being one of those fast, loud, angular post-hardcore albums that just leave me dissatisfied.
Not bad overall. Occasionally made me think of Fugazi, Steve Albini, or Sonic Youth (briefly). Had a few moments that were a bit too emo for my liking though.
May sound crazy, but the older I get the more I appreciate the punk rock sound. That's my son's influence on me. Thank God for Punk Rock, eh boy? Thought this album was straight energy and definitely a great workout album. It may be the longest punk album I can recall, but it did not diminish my enjoyment. Can't say I loved everything but overall a very good listening experience. A few songs stood out for me. Luau (my favorite), Do You Compute, Sinews and Hand Over Fist. Solid album and appreciate the introduction. Definitely the kind of music you need to be in the right mood. My work seems to put me in that kind of mood! Side note, April 21 is the anniversary of Prince's death. I spent the morning listen to Prince and the afternoon punking out to Drive Like Jehu. How about that variety for a day of listening to music? Ha. 3.5
Raucous and in your face punk. This was fun to listen to on a gloomy Tuesday while I worked.
Somewhere at the intersection of banal and innovative. Innovanal
Going to enter my Gym Playlist for years to come. Best Song: Super Unison Rating: 6/10 (Adequate) Stars: 3/5
Sonic assault with additional kicking. Truly amazing how you can look down at you own body as it is being beaten and think, I kind of like the way this sounds.
vantar kannski melódíur en fær annan séns. 3,5.
This was hitting up against my screamy-shouty threshold which typically limits how much I can enjoy any hardcore or post-hardcore. This is always a shame to me because *musically* it's kind of everything I love. I appreciated the instrumentals a lot. 3.5
Music to shred to, good for stacking it and getting back up while your blood and sweat mix together. Guitar riff in Do you Compute and Human Interest is tight. Rhythm on New Intro and Sinews (both versions) is clean and is a welcome breath between the electric shocks, well placed tracks in the albums flow. Bullet train to Vegas favourite track on album.
Angry people. VERY angry about something. Almost pleasingly angry.
Was ok
A chaotic and interesting record
Ok, grungy feel
I've never heard of Drive Like Yehu or the album Yank Crime. It was interesting, but also a bit exhausting. At some points, the music and voice reminded me of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, but in the more nerve-wracking phases. I enjoyed it, but it's a bit too heavy for everyday life. 3/5
At first I found this just painful and noisy. But after a while I began to hear beauty through the brashness. Tracks like Luau and Super Unison have a lot of charm in the instrumentation. The whole thing is quite reminiscent of Sonic Youth. I think if I really engaged with this and was in a shouty mood I could like it a lot. Fave Tracks: Luau, Hand Over Fist (I think this one's just a bonus track) 3.2/5
Never really followed or listened to post-hardcore punk. Never heard of this album or band. I’m doing this project to get some exposure to different types of music and expand my general knowledge. Considering that objective, I’m glad I listened to this one, but probably won’t listen to it again. As far as 90’s hard punk goes, I can see why this album is on the list. I generally like aggressive music in the right circumstances and quantities, so this qualifies. It’s a pretty solid effort. They really mixed up the sounds and tempos and kept me engaged for most of the album. Maybe about 20-25 minutes longer than I would have preferred. Most punk albums I’ve listened to run about 30-40 minutes. 10 songs, 3.5 minutes each, hard and fast and in your face. This one kept going to the point I was getting a bit fatigued with it. I believe the version on Spotify was nearly 70 minutes.
I wanted to hate it. I wanted to like it. I ended up neither hating nor liking it.
I was a little wary of this one, but it’s not bad. I understood none of the lyrics, must be some Californian version of English I’m too Canadian to understand. The guitars are dissonant and dark, the singer screamy (not too far from At the Drive In), yet I survived unscathed. I’ve had a (probably undeserved) disdain for any music marked “emo” for a while, but Yank Crime is surprisingly cathartic and great for a walk (which is what I was doing for the last few tracks). First time listen … would listen again 👍
This is an interesting album. While large parts of it are harder than music I would usually listen to, other parts sound like Slint and post-rock to me. I wouldn't have thought these sounds could be found together, but here we are. This is probably not something I'd seek out to listen to again, but I am happy to have heard it once.
parts of this i really liked and other parts… blegh
You know, I wasn’t really expecting post-hardcore to be represented in this list. It’s one of those genres that feels very broad, to the point where I can’t really pinpoint what it is. Apparently, some bands that I listened to such as My Chemical Romance and AFI count as post-hardcore (according to Wikipedia). Personally, I think of At The Drive-In when it comes to post-hardcore, specifically Relationship of Command (which probably isn’t on this list, but should be). This album sounded like a clear influence to Relationship. It has a similar sound and structure, as well as the same vicious vocal delivery. But I feel there is a lot of missteps here. Many of the songs are stretched out and rely a little on repetition to pad things out. This is really noticeable on Luau, which lyrically sounds a little stupid. Some of the songs do have moments where it feels like it clicks like Super Unison and New Math, but I wish it was more consistent. I wanted to love this album, since I never even heard of Drive Like Jehu. But it is still influential, so I do still respect it. Favorite track: New Math Other hits: Here Comes the Roman Plows, Golden Brown, Super Unison, Sinews
I didn't know what to make of this one, it reminded me slightly of Soundgarden but turns out it is punk. As we know, I don't like punk. This had enough of an early-90s grunge feel that I ended up having mixed feelings about it, and I actually liked the track Sinews. Rating: 3
It had its moments, but also had periods of excessive noise.
Didn't know these guys beforehand, but I enjoyed this one pretty well. Felt like a proto-emo/screamo type album.
Did not expect to see this genre represented in this list. I didn't mind this but didn't love it either - could see how they inspired the next wave of post-hardcore acts like At The Drive-In.
Bra musik, har lite svårt med vokalerna. Men dom instrumentala delarna är nice. Kräver vidare lyssning
Got tired a little of the unconventional time signatures and dissonance. Blistering vocals though and plenty of hyperactive energy. 3.5 / 5

At first song i was prepared to dislike this strongly. But subtly not subtly in the background it recovered and i found myself certainly not disliking it.
I do compute
Very interesting. I'm somewhat familiar with post-hardcore music due to being a huge fan of the Dismemberment Plan a few years ago. I've always pinned the genre as walking a delicate line between unbearably annoying and thoughtful/considered songwriting, and this album consolidates my interest in the genre with how all over the place it is tonally. I enjoyed having the time to kick my feet back on this album, even if I don't think the songs earn their long runtimes. I'm interested in giving this one a closer listen sometime in the future. The lyrics seemed pretty interesting, though I'm not interested in blowing my ears out with the loudest guitars and drums known to man just yet.
A couple good songs but not an album I’d listen to again.
Another one that is really good in patches, but is too long and loses its way. It's hard work - it's noisy, it's grating, it's better in the first half than it is in the second, but I'm glad I listened to it. Think it's a 3 rather than a 4, probably won't go back to it, but worth a listen.
Okay, I get it, but I don't GET it. I found some of the songs great but some too long and boring. I can see what they are doing AND the value in doing it, but like... if I hadn't read the other reviews for this album I would be scoring it lower.
Not terrible but way too same-y. Do something...anything different. Sinews showed some promise as being a departure from the rest of the album, but even that fell back into the same pattern as the rest of the album. Overall, pretty underwhelming. No plans to revisit this one despite being a big fan of other artists in this genre. 3/5 Highlights: Sinews
Pretty standard 90's alt grunge kind of feel. Perfectly fine to me.
I appreciate this more than like it. in the same vein as ATDI etc really, for better or worse
Seems an important album - but I will give it a modest score for now
it's a difficult listen but i feel them seeping through to me as inspiration to maaaaany bands i love!
Lots of noise. Decently we'll put together but the style isn't my favourite place to go. I think this does make sense to be on the list. I could see this being incredible if it was what I was looking for.
A relentless, metal-adjacent album with the occasional melodic respite. This very much reminded me of my Tool and RATM phase. I probably would have enjoyed the album in mid-90s.
Seems like an appropriate album for the day we got subjected to another four years of that felon leading the free world... Anyway I was primed to dismiss this as a) hardcore's not really my bag and b) nor are >7 minute tracks, but it kinda clicked for me. Powerful and menacing and focused and relentless, in a good way. Looks like the 3-star train keeps a-rollin'.
I liked this album way more than I thought I was going to. The rawness of it was pretty cool and some of the song structures didn't really make sense but they worked. Definitely not anything I would ever seek out or listen to again. But it added some nice variety from the typically stinky punk albums that we get every other day. I really like the genre name \"Math-Rock\"
Started off rough but there are some pretty cool guitar parts. Not a huge fan of the singing but the instrumentals are undeniably good. Sinews fucking rules. If it wasn't for the voice this would probably be a 4 but I'm going high 3.
Wonderfully discordant on a day I needed that
Shouty ass Midwest emo. Score depends on how I'm feeling
i saw “emo” and “hardcore” in the genre tags and immediately wanted to kms but this is actually pretty good. i mean it’s obviously still what it is and i can’t say i’m always in the mood to listen to this kind of music but i can dig it when i am. how does his voice not hurt after all that…also in “human interest” i thought he said “i’d never make you supper / i know that wouldn’t do” which i thought was a pretty good line but apparently he’s actually saying “i’d never make you suffer” which is lame. the whole thing is kinda like a kirkland brand version of spiderland by slint. fav tracks: golden brown; super unison; new math; sinews (original version)
3 good but don’t think punk lends itself to this much instrumental breaks
Influential band
Quite liked it, but probably not enough to listen to it again.
Not interesting enough for me on a musical level. I appreciate some good in your face stuff though.
The early 90's beginnings of scremo. Kinda like Fugazi. Punk/noise rock. 1hr 9mins is far too long for a post hardcore punk album. I mean, it's pretty solid, but so much thrashing and yelling. I had to keep taking breaks throughout this album because I would find myself losing interest. Some songs are 9 mins long.... 9 mins of abusing musical instruments and screaming about it. Favourite songs: Golden Brown, Bullet Train to Vegas, Here Come the Rome Plows, Human Interest Least favourite songs: New Intro 3/5
Started slowly but gained traction as I went. It deserves more of my attention. Sounds like the raw and unabashed Nirvana we all love. I’m gonna put this one of the shelf and come back to it with the hopes the three grows.
Respected this album for keeping it engaging while incredibly aggressive and raw. It's clear that this is the predecessor for genres to come. Not quite fully formed, sounding a bit like the harshest Nirvana.
Cool punk rock
Quite fun, reminded me a bit of Dead Kennedys. Bit too long though
Pretty punky, less post.
I've never heard of this band or album before, but I've seen this cover on the checklist website, and I've been curious as to what this album would be like. Post hardcore? Sure, why not! Seems like a good way to spend a Monday. I thought this album was pretty good, and I was surprised by its sound. The guitar playing was fantastic throughout the album, and for an album that heavily relies on one thing, it was really interesting. I really loved the manic energy that this album had, but it never felt like that energy was completely driving the album at the expense of the overall sound. The songs were a touch long, but I didn't feel like the album suffered any due to the song length. In fact, the length of the songs allowed the band to go to some really interesting places structurally, breaking down the guitar parts, twisting them around, and building something new out of them. As much as I liked the guitar playing, it was really all this album had to offer me; the lyrics and the vocals weren't really my jam. Still, this is the type of album I'd probably never discover on my own, and I'm glad it's on this list so that I had a reason to listen to it.
My 16 year old self liked this album.
Very screamy
Pretty good album
is ganz cool aber bissl langatmig
Loud. It's sound alright and can be abrasive. However the noises this album generates from its screaming and loud instrumentals creates something quite nice occasionally. I don't think its perfect because the album is bloated and some of the songs meander for too long but the album grew on me overtime.
solid album, really loud and not too mental just right, i enjoyed it
For an indie post-hardcore album, this one was pretty solid, but an hour and ten minutes is quite a long runtime for this genre. By the middle of the album, I was already feeling drained. The music is raw, unpolished, and aggressively in-your-face. It boasts intricate guitar work, complex structures, and unconventional time signatures. If math rock is your thing, this album will definitely hit the spot.
Solid noise for those who like to jam.
The longer I listened to this album the more I liked it. I was stuck on one major issue the entire time: punk has always been earmarked as high energy, burn-hot and be done fast song writing. Prog bands can do a 10 min song because they understand the role of storytelling and dynamics. This began feeling redundant, then monotonous after a while, like they wanted a cross between Sex Pistols and late ‘80s Metallica. Luau and Do You Compute were key tracks.
It was okay. I can see where post hardcore was born. Just never a scene that did much for me. Musos taking over a scene and making it technical.
Ok
I heard of Drive Like Jehu in an At the Drive-in album liner notes and I can certainly see how they were influenced by these guys.
This makes sense through the lens of pre-grunge, pre-emo, anti-80's pop. Easily can hear this in the same cohort as Good Charlotte and the Ataris. Lots of guitar and driving percussion, sometimes taking too long to get to the point such as in New Intro and/or Super Unison.
Wildly influential but overbearing and grating at the same time. Wanted to rate it higher, but I just couldn't justify it.
Rips, heavy duty punk/emo, a tad to screamy
In no way the best example of this sort of music, but definitely one of the pace setters
New one on me. Rather liked it. Bit of a palate cleanser. Too long mind you
Honestly did not speak to me, but it's okay! C'est la vie fr
Thought I’d hate this, actually really liked it. Very high energy, grating but in a way that pumps you up rather than makes you angry.
First few songs are wild, not really my vibe tbh. The rest of the songs are ok
Another one of those albums that comes very close to something I like, but doesn’t quite coalesce into something I can definitively say I enjoyed. Here, while I liked the punky energy and creative spirit, I think the sheer manic chaos lost me a bit.
I really enjoyed the rawness of this alternative punk album. Never heard of them before today. There's definitely some complexity to their sound and style once you get past the opening song. I'm not sure if I would have appreciated it as much when it was released in 1994, but I'm definitely enjoying it now.
I had high expectations, but despite intriguing music, the album felt like it lacked proper highlights.
Never heard of and quite enjoyed….
I wonder how Jehu, son of Jehoshaphat, grandson of Nimshi, and possibly great-grandson of Omri, feels about inspiring emo
Enjoyed it okay. Reminded me of Swans a bit. I enjoyed it more as the album went on.
Un po' punkrock, un po' meh
3 - I want to like this more, but I tend to get bored with post-hardcore, and I did find myself losing focus towards the middle with this. First song was pretty good. I really liked the vocals here. He does the screaming and shouting very well. Again, I wish I liked this more. I still think it's a pretty cool album.
Not bad for noisy music
An right album, I liked Do You Compute and Luau. The rest all sort of blurred together.
Not exactly in my wheelhouse but some fantastic guitar work. happy to know it exists..
Did not know what to expect.
Post-hardcore, Norma Jean ripped these guys off lol
Nothing grabbed me, but nothing repelled me either. I would be fine listening to this album again, but also fine without hearing it.
eh
I actually enjoyed it a lot, just cut the 30 seconds of scratch sounds and the 3 minute loops of scratch and instrumentals and it’s a 5
I quite like their sound. It is interesting enough that I will try similar bands.
ok
This is a cool history piece for me, seeing how other scenes were sounding in this time frame. I don't know that I would come back to this but I am glad to find it.
It was OK - perfectly passable post-hardcore. Could see myself listening at a moment in time but not going to convince me now.
I’m not really into hardcore, but it seemed pretty good.
3/5. Passable hard-core punk. Production was good. The tracks were a mixed bag.
Borderline 2
I have not heard of this artist or album, but after a few songs I do like it. Gives a kind of early Foo Fighters/Ratt/Alice In Chains vibe that I really dig.
Not really my thing, but seems competent for what it is
High school me would have been all over this. Some tracks rip. Probably won't listen again, but I'm glad I know of this album now.
From the Wiki, I expected to really dislike this, but didn’t. Nothing I’d ever listen to again, but some of the tracks were reasonable melodic and the guitar work was pretty tasty throughout. Never heard of the group.
Not exactly my jam but my jam-adjacent. Hints of Interpol and some other band I can't put my finger on. Bullet train to Vegas is a bit of a jam.
not mine
An interesting album, group I've never heard of. Wikipedia calls them "post-hardcore," "post-punk," what am I supposed to make of these terms? No idea, but it's pretty good. Long tracks with a strong display of energy, emotion. Feels punky to me, but the song length is one indicator that things are different. Yeah not sure what to really say about this album, but I liked it. Nothing crazy, but we don't get many albums like this so it's an appreciated departure. Favorite tracks: Do You Compute, Sinews. Album art: Very simple black and white drawing of an ink pot. All the words, the band and album title, seem like free association. What does any of this mean? Who is Jehu? It's a cool cover, bold. 3.5/5
Didn't need 70 minutes of this. Prefer Glassjaw, Deftones, and many others.
Not bad, definitely not polished it would seem
1st Reminded me of Alexisonfire and My chemical romance from my teenage youth Felt lengthy 3
My favourite parts of this album are the parts they sound like othe post-hardcore/emo bands that I enjoy. They make me wish I was listening to slint or dogleg instead 🥲. I get that they were like the fathers of emo or smth. The second half of the album was better than the first.
Frenetic, quite progressive, but also very melodic especially tracks like Here Come the Rome Plows, Luau, & Bullet Train to Vegas. Lots of riffs. Not my favorite vocal style but it works for the most part.
Interesting US hardcore...with twiddling bits. Worth another listen.
Yes! This all happened so much earlier than I thought, it seems. A great racket I’d never even heard of.
Mad. Chaotic. All over the place. Deliberately, one assumes. It surprised me that there were a few tracks that I actually half liked...Do you compute; Golden Brown; Human Interest; Hand Over Fist; Bullet train to Vegas. So, what started off sounding like a 1 out of 5, ended up with a (surprising) respectable 3
Ratm
When the first track started, my brain started preparing for an aural assault ala Sonic Youth or Liars, but it was surprisingly okay! I noticed the quality of the playing and composition after a song or two, and then a couple tracks later I noticed that I was kind of getting into it! If nothing else, I think it may end up being good background music that I may come back to again.
I really enjoyed this. It’s noise the way I like it. Will return to it.
Post hardcore is a bit boring for me but I really got into a few songs. Little too long.
Find me in the pit crowd killing
TBH I think I tuned most of it out while I was working but I didnt mind it in the background, except the 20 second high pitched fog horn sound at the beginning of track 5, that was painful.
I’m more of a blink-182 guy a very soft 3/5 on this one
This record is shrouded in mystery. What is it really trying to say? What is a yank crime? Is it like getting covered head to toe in the jizz of the entire Chelsea first team and backroom staff? Who is Nigel Spackman?
3.5/5. Primordial emo and math rock, seems like a fairly influential album and an early example of the emerging emo scene.
I feel like there have already been a few albums on the list with the same vibe, so it's a bit boring.
Longer than it needed to be.
Punk rock brut. 3.4
Yank Crime sounds as if someone put an At The Drive In album and an Unwound album in a blender. That is good of course, but got mixed feelings for this album. Always liked it more than Rocket from the Crypt (and am surprised both RftC and DlJ are both in 1001) but it took multiple listens to get into again, and in the end it is just too exhaustive and inconsistent for me to fully appreciate it.
Musically I like this, it's just very intense and at some point the shouting gets on the nerves.
It wasn’t completely my thing, but appreciate their significance for the genre.
Got autoplayed more guitars and shouting once it finished so I didn't actually know when the album ended
Punky
Interesting post punk similar to at the drive in
Þetta eru ágætis læti.
sevmediğim bi tür olsa da gayet güzel.
Liked it, Here Come the Rome Plows was the highlight
A good solid record with enough melody and good songs to complement the driving hardcore sound from Drive Like Jehu. Not for all tastes, but I would have been all over this during the 90's when this was released and even now it's still very listenable. A bit long, but then again they only released two albums, so we should happy with what they put out.
I really dont know what to think of this. There are some good sections and some horrible parts.
First half of the album done, and it's really weird, but I'm pretty sure I love it?! It's definitely not perfect, but man it does well to bridge the gap between punk and grunge. Some of the grooves the instrumentalists get into together are truly magical. This is one I'm really glad I discovered. It falls off quite a bit in the 2nd half sadly. Still pretty good, but do not see myself rushing back to this album at any point. Favorite track: Super Unison (minus the first 30 seconds)
Interesting. Didn't quite grab me on first listen. A little too noisy for my taste, but it's not random, there's something special going on here. I'll settle with a 3 star for now. Luau is definitely a memorable track.
You only need one album by Drive Like Jehu, and this is it. Then, you've pretty much got everything, because - just as it did 30 years ago (give or take) - it a;; becomes fairly predictable. Good, but predictable.
This is pretty sick. I can see why this was so influential in the hardcore scene. A really cohesive sound that just works. Super raw but also understandable, even for someone who doesn't listen to much hardcore. Not an everyday listen for me, but it was fun and I would definitely see them live. 3/5
3.5
Knowing nothing about Drive Like Jehu, my guess as to what the music would be like based on the cover was pretty close. Overall I liked listening to Yank Crime. "New Intro" was the track I liked the most. That track and some of the longer tracks (7+ minutes) reminded me of some of the progressive metal that began after the 80s. I can't say I'm a new fan. By the time I got to "Sinew", the last (and my least favorite) track, I was ready for a break. There was too much hoarse screaming on this album for me to want to come back, even if that level of screaming wasn't on all of the tracks.
At first I didn’t think I would get on with this at all but around a third of the way in I found it was becoming infectious. I don’t know if I’d re-listen but glad to have had my horizons broadened by this one.
Early emo hell yeah! But unfortunately not v headbangable
Not bad but a little longer than necessary at times. Reminds me of Local H
Pioneers of post hardcore and emocore, this album apparently gained retrospective appreciation long after the band had split up. Heavy and earnest, but enjoyable. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Golden Brown Date listened: 18/05/23
a bit angry, a bit headachy, but good if the mood arises
While I can see a lot of merit in this album, oh lordy is it fatiguing. It could do with being 15 minutes shorter.
Not for me
A bit of a shame that only two albums were released by these guys. This is the type of album that you just randomly stumble across and are very glad to have found. Peak underground punk that exemplifies the alternative music scene of the '80s and '90s. In other words, this is the obscure band that your own favorite bands listened to as kids, which then inspired them to form their own groups and make music themselves. Standout track is Super Unison.
So a pretty cool album but as far as punk goes it’s pretty average. I really like the dark tones. The piercing sounds are a unique element that I could maybe dig live but in my car it was painful. Maybe I’m just a yuppie tho. There was a bridge in hand over fist that sounded kinda like a (I think) foo fighters song. That track is a cool departure from the albums sound. Id love to mosh to bullet train to vegas
Quite liked about half of this? Solid 3.5 (rounded down as per protocol), potential to go up. Could come back to this one.
I was really not in the mood for this when it started. I felt a 1 star coming on. But it grew on me and earned itself a 3. Well done chaps.
okay harcore sound.
More into this for the math rock parts than the emo.
solid, influential
Mediocre at best
This was pretty good, sounded like a ripoff of another and I can’t think of now
A weird one for sure. At times I really liked this album, other times meh. It definitely dragged a bit for me. Saved tracks: Do You Compute, New Math, Sinews (Original Version)
This wasn't bad. A little noisy. Some of the longer tracks went on a little too long, but the shorter ones were fun little bursts of energy. The math-rocky elements were fun to hear.
This would be a 3.5 for me, but it is mostly one-note sonically. There are moments that really grabbed me, and it was mostly when the band slowed down, or quieted down from the mostly loud dynamic.
Did I like it? Yes. Will I ever listen to it again? Probably not.
You’ll love it if you like mathy and technical rock, but it’s a pretty decent listen even if you don’t.
I liked the music but not the singing so much.
This was a surprisingly great album! I have not heard of these guys, and though I don't spend my time fully engulfed in the punk world, I have a pretty good grasp on the variety of name brand punk bands. So I came into this one clean slate, and really enjoyed it. It's got that Cali punk sound, like Dead Kennedys and a little like Snot, and overall a great mix of guitars and perfect vocals for the style. Crazy they only had one major label album before splitting up. Almost pulled a 4 star rating, but it's challenging when compared to so many other great albums, even when limiting to the punk genre. I'd toss em a 3.8 if I could.
Yet another band I have not come across before. Instinctively like it. Great driving beat on most tracks leavened with stuff like 'New Intro'.
I found this record compelling. Never heard of the band before. I loved the pace/speed of the music. The lyrics were irrelevant but the singer’s voice was as important as the instruments. The band rushed headlong & took you with them. I particularly enjoyed the 4 lengthy trax, on which the band really stretches out. A wonderful surprise.
The literal sound of a mental breakdown…meh
Hard sound but too long.
Quite post-hardcore. Cool at some parts but the track lengths just bogged it down. 6/10
new to me, not bad
Nirvana-esque, especially the unintelligible vocals. Pretty guitar focused which I liked though.
Noise.
For noise rock, this is pretty great. A few tracks went on a smidge to long, but somehow they still held it all together. How did I miss this in 1994? I was probably still listening to Dirty.
