Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Randy Newman seems to catch a lot of hate, but this really wasn’t a terrible album. His songwriting is sharp, and the humor comes through pretty clearly if you’re paying attention. His voice can just be hard to get past. The title track was the highlight for me. The tongue in cheek delivery is really well done, and it’s one of those songs where the sarcasm sneaks up on you. It didn’t totally win me over, but it was better than I expected.
Solid album all the way through.
Didnt get into this one as much as the earlier Randy. There are a couple of songs on here that I think Nilsson crooned better, so I cannae really go above a 3 here.
Some nice tunes, some fun tunes, some plodding mediocrity amongst some nice storytelling. The final track, God’s song was the standout. This one didn’t really float my boat.
i did listen but don’t really remember
2.5
Anede ikke at leave your hat on ikke var Joe Cockers nummer. Han var ikke langt fra kilden. Fin oplevelse.
Der er noget Tom Waits over Randys vokal. Lidt mindre hæs, men leveringen ligner.
Warm, soothing, and quite charmingly low-key. I found a couple of these songs, including 'he gives us all his love', provoked quite a string emotional reaction. Lovely indeed.
This is a reluctant "3". I found this album distasteful. The songs are subversive but without benefit. Burn On alludes to the Cuyahoga river burning but doesn't actually have much to say.
Revisit
Very 80's, overall good if you're 55 yo 3/5
good album for a long road trip

Not terribly exciting but still a good listen
Great voice but boring music
Very, very good, perfect but not my style.
soothing even if repetitive, but nothing standout for me
Poignant lyrics. Old Man was a good one.
What a great writer.
Respect. A wordsmith. A lot of Disney-esque music but always happy and loving.
Randy Newman is a really good songwriter with unique vocals and a pop/folksy style. I will not, however, forgive him for writing Short People. Minus a star for that.
It was alright but not great.
A fine album. Nothing too catchy.
Another 3 star experience for me. Some nice songs. But a bit samey. Interesting to put this against all the other stuff that was happening all the time though and it does seem quite progressive
Such a throwback compositionally--was and is anyone (outside of musical theatre writers)--writing songs like this anymore? It's wild how his style remained unchanged from here to Toy Story, etc. Not bad, but I wouldn't pop it on--the Dayton song is a high point for me.
Kósý Randy. Skiptar skoðanir á þessu en ég get alveg fílað þetta. Samt ekkert meira en það.
Allt í lagi. Disneylögin eru skemmtilegri.
I can’t get past Newman’s voice. Good lyrics though. 3/5

I didn't dislike it, I rather enjoyed the album. Randy has some other off-the-wall songs (not on this album), but it's so hard to separate his distinctive voice from the hokey Toy Story song!
Even more enjoyable when I was imagining the lyrics being applied to the lives of toys.
Album 982 of 1089 Sail Away - Randy Newman (1972) Rating : 3.5 / 5 For a lot of people, Newman is “the Toy Story guy,” but long before that era he was already carving out a lane that only he could occupy - a blend of sharp social commentary, dry humor, and melodies that sneak up on you in the best way. What stands out to me on this album is how effortlessly he balances lighthearted delivery with heavier subject matter. Newman has always had a knack for saying something meaningful without ever sounding preachy, and Sail Away is full of those little moments where you realize he’s slipped a message into what sounds, at first, like a simple tune. His writing walks that line between playful and profound, and it’s a big part of what makes him such a unique artist. Add in the warm production, the easygoing arrangements, and his trademark vocal charm, and you get an album that’s both enjoyable on the surface and rewarding if you decide to dig deeper. Newman’s catalog is full of gems, and this one is no exception.
Newman has a unique voice that is almost comical in a way good songwriter
I listened it to it once and it was enjoyable enough, but nothing outstanding. Only one song really stood out (political science). I felt it was pretty bland and generic but that it needed another listen. Second listen, I kind of felt the same. It almost grabbed my attention, but did not quite. Notable songs were Political Science and last night I had a dream. 3 stars
He can write a mean lyric. Can't sing them though.
I grew up with Toy Story, so until today, the Disney stuff was the only thing I had listened to by him. This is not bad. I wouldn't listen to it again, but it was enjoyable. However, it's funny to hear the same guy who sang "You've Got a Friend in Me" sing about dropping nukes on Europe.
Okay.
Felt like listening to a Pixar movie soundtrack, which is no bad thing
This goofy soulful man was singing Disney songs before singing Disney songs. 6/10
Randy Newman has the voice of a disaffected Muppet and, based on this album of 2-3min songs, the attention span of one as well. Some of the songs barely even get going before they’re over, and that makes this feel more like an album of demos… even though many of these songs had already been recorded by Randy and/or other musicians before this record. Some of the songs would feel a little depressing if it wasn’t for (1) that muppet voice, (2) the fact that the song ends before the despair sets in, and (3) the next track starts with a circus rhythm. It’s so unintentionally whimsical (and sarcastic) that it’s hard to hate. Randy Newman and Tom Waits exist on opposite ends of the same spectrum, and I’m a fan of that spectrum. I’m “as happy as a monkey in a monkey tree”.
A little cheesy for my tastes but great arrangements and storytelling
mostly enjoyed this one. i quite enjoy the satirical songs but the more seemingly earnest songs didnt land as well
Although I admire Randy Newman...he isn't my thing and I found this album hard going...
Just associate him with TV
I found this album to be pretty good. The songwriting is clever. Sharp political comedy disguised by it's easy listening style. You do have to listen closely to appreciate the wit. Otherwise it's kind of just solid easy listening. So while it's pleasant, nothing really jumped out at me. Still, this was a pleasant, enjoyable listen.
He is just one of those unique artists that has a sound of their own. The album is a great example of his style and is so playful. It’s good, but I can see why some people don’t like it. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again
Its hard to objectively review the You Got a Friend In Me guy but I tried Its no bad
his voice is good but each song just reminds me of toy story because his voice is so distinct, i enjoyed the tracks tho
Good stuff here, the family guy skit ruined me though
Good listen. Didn’t know a few of those songs were originally his since they were covered so well.
Meh
Preciso sempre ler as letras porque não entendo o sotaque do malandro. Boas músicas em um álbum curtinho.
Enjoyable. Some fun and cool songs.
I liked this. I don't care too much about how Randy Newman sings but the rest is pretty great. The lyrics are good and some of the songs surprised me because I was expecting just like piano ballad type things and there was more diversity than that. 3.49/5
sympa, j'ai bien travaille en l'ecoutant 3
Never listened to much Randy Newman outside of his soundtrack work. Whilst I think Newman is a pretty talented songwriter - and there are some great arrangements here as well - his delivery doesn't always work for me. That said it starts pretty strong, with Last Night I Had A Dream being a highlight.
I like some of the songs a lot, but as an album it's not got anything that stands out. I liked it, I could be convinced to give it a 4. 3.4
Toy story guy sings other songs. Admittedly some good ones.
Good album. Randy has a soulful sound that is calming.
Randy Newman’s 𝘚𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘺 is clever, biting, and beautifully arranged, but it’s also an album that’s easier to admire than to love. Newman’s cynical wit and theatrical delivery shine in tracks like the deceptively sweet title song and the sardonic 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦. The lush orchestrations give the record a timeless sophistication, yet the detached irony can make it feel emotionally distant. It’s smart, sharp, and uniquely Newman — but not always engaging beyond the craft.
Nice songs but too much all in one go
- Instant Toy Story nostalgia - Last Night I Had A Dream a lively vibe change - You Can Leave Your Hat On the first I recognised, though more familiar with the covers (Tom Jones) - Overall: nice easy listening, iconic voice
Honestly, it seems a little odd that there would be a Randy Newman album on this list. Not that he's bad, but I don't think he's particularly remarkable, other than for his work on Disney/Pixar soundtracks. It's not that it's bad. It's a pretty enjoyable album. If you're familiar with Newman, it's exactly what you think it would be. Piano heavy, but lots of other instrumentation. His unique voice carrying the melody of every song. Occasional great lyrics with a little bit of whimsy. It's not a great album, but it's definitely good. All of the songs do end up blending together quite a bit though. Favorite Song(s): Sail Away, Old Man
Never really new Randy Newman other than his songs featured in soundtracks or I love LA which is played when the Dodgers win. This album was good and reminded me of listening to the Toy Story soundtrack, but in a good way.
Actually enjoyed this for what it was, the better Randy Newman album from this list
Billy Joel lite delivers a montage of vaudeville-esque piano stylings. This album would be 2 stars if the orchestration wasn't so exquisite, and 4 stars if he knew how to properly end a song.
Meh..a bit schmaltzy and full of po faced observations
He certainly has a sound. I liked a few of the songs here... they are evocative. Liked this more than the other album I've heard that was on this list. The music is a little cloying for the subjects of some of the songs but perhaps that was an intentional dissonance.
This was nice but I’m gonna forget about it in 3 days
He's a sly one, that Randy Newman.
Middle of the road. Doesn't grab me.
23/10/2025 It was what i expected, nothing stood out for me. Spotify listeners: 4 million
Felt like an Old Man after this one.
It’s fine but it’s a really limited sound
I didn’t dislike it like many others seem to, but I’m still not sure why Randy Newman has *two* albums on this list. This one is classic Randy Newman—if you enjoy his usual style, you’ll probably like it. I was pleasantly surprised to recognize a few of the songs. The real standout moment, though, came when I realized some of these tracks reminded me of the movie Major League. It all clicked when I reached track 8, “Burn On,” which plays during the film’s opening credits. “You Can Leave Your Hat On” is another familiar song, though I’ve always known it better through Joe Cocker’s cover.
You know what, for as fun as it is to make fun of Randy Newman, he's not too bad at this
Sail Away is a pretty good album that does go by a bit too quickly. I mainly only knew Randy Newman for making a lot of songs from Pixar movies, namely songs like Friend Like Me from the original Toy Story and the Monsters Inc. main theme. So it wasn't really a shock to me that the songs here sound like songs you would hear from any of those movies. The songs sound good and definitely do have some pretty good lyrics. My main problem, like i mentioned, is the songs go by so fast and really don't give all that much time for them to sink in. I still thought this album definitely had it's good points though. Best Song: Burn On Worst Song: Dayton, Ohio - 1903
Just sounds like Toy Story
Same artist as you’ve got a friend in me, but that’s not on this album.
Ihan jees chillailua.välillä veisut vähän omintakeisia.
Pixar tom waits
Randy Newman sounds like he's writing songs for a musical that doesn't exist.
I was not paying attention to the lyrics. It was enjoyable. They can be disguised as satire I’m not too fussed about that.
a good mixture of fun, funny, and pretty sentimental songs. not sure if i will ever think of Randy Newman and not immediately think of Toy Story and the other countless childhood movies he did the scores for, but pretty cool to see another side of him.
I'm pretty sure Randy Newman is the most soothing voice to listen to for just about every 90s kid. If there was a movie I watched hundreds of times as a child, odds are high that Randy Newman composed and performed the soundtrack. Obviously, its a lot different to listen to some of his other original works, but was still enjoyable. Probably gonna watch Toy Story here soon.
Good but not as good as some other Newman albums
I like the Randy Newman songs that Pixar used for some of their movies, but unfortunately none of those feature on this album. I remember Alan price doing "Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear", but I never knew that it was written by Randy Newman. The album is OK, but not great.
Same person who scored for Toy Story :) Favorite track: last night i had a dream other picks: sail away, lonely at the top, god's song
So much of this album is just “You Got A Friend In Me” at slightly different tempos.
Nice and chill
Dylanesque sounds carried by straightforward but soulful lyrics. Not something I'd typically seek out but I appreciated it while it was on
For those still with whimsy in their heart...
This was nice, familiar, relatable.
As a Brit, it’s very strange to hear You Can Leave Your Hat On when it isn’t in the context of male strippers
No not woody again. All jokes aside, I enjoyed this a lot more than Good old boys as it had a lot more variety in the songs. It had like a mix of Circus music (for some reason), American casino style cabaret and piano led ballads. I also felt this didn’t sound as much like Pixar music as the last did, due to the change up in styles unlike the other one which was very repetitive, this one was still a little repetitive but not nearly as much, although, musically it didn’t exactly hook me all the time. This guy is definitely a good lyricist, especially with his political commentary on songs like political science and sail away, however his vocals and instrumentation (the latter being less of an issue) leaves a bit to be desired for me personally. Also, with the album being remastered in 2002 it made it seem like the song Dayton Ohio-1903 was suggesting in the title that the place somehow died in 2002 which was pretty funny. Favourites: Last night I had a dream and political science. Overall, 6/10. (Also, I had to rewrite this review as the site randomly died for some reason).
He jumps between serious and silly from song to song. It's an interesting ride, but not something I want very often.
Solide Stücke im Geist der Improvisation. „Leave your hat on“.
extremely unique and singular and Striking in a number of ways...extreme musical economy from the song structures to arrangements, newman's distinctive somewhat old-timey voice, but more than anything how the surface-level sappiness of both contrast with the content of the songs being buried in so many layers of tonal and dramatic irony. inevitably, this is what keeps me at a bit of a distance...despite occasionally prodding at some things from reality i wish he wouldnt reduce to a self-congratulatory abstractions, i suppose there is some inarguable cleverness to Just How Much newman commits to the bit in every song. but the fact that i rly cant reliably tell if Anything is supposed to be sincere here is just Not The Experience For Me...even an early track that seems like unadorned simplehearted religious faith is later upended by the pitch-dark anti-religious closing track, it makes the whole album feel Unreliable in a way that i guess is cool but is not terribly fulfilling for me personally. i am far too sentimental and sappy of a person myself to get much out of the uncanny skewering of these styles that newman does here. the universe does not revolve around me and my taste, and im happy that it doesnt. but yk, its all i can speak for
The Toy Story guy far out man
Sail Away 3.4 Lonely at the Top 3.2 He Gives Us All His Love 3 Last Night I Had a Dream 3.5 Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear 3.3 Old Man 2.7 Political Science 2.9 Burn On 2.8 Memo to My Son 2.8 Dayton, Ohio - 1903 3 You Can Leave Your Hat On 3.5 God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind) 2.6 Score: 3.058333333
Enjoyed this. Never listened to a full Randy Newman album before, discovered a few tunes and it was a good listen for a morning's commute
Mostly listenable. Like the satire but afraid too many Trumpists don't get the sarcasm and follow the sentiment of Political Science with brains on non-active. Good variety of styles but not a fan of musical like tunes.
Not bad, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was listening to a Disney Pixar soundtrack the whole time. Plus, that nasal voice of his is a bit hard to get used to.
Haha toy story guy
Cabaret pop?
Depressing, sardonic, and occasionally sentimental. As far as songwriting goes, it's not bad. Wouldn't mind hearing again
Better than the other one I got from him (at least he didn’t say the n word this time) just some decent country stuff I guess. 3 stars
Pretty good
2.75
i'm afraid i'm a bit toy story-pilled having first encountered randy newman through pixar, and i must admit that every song sounded like "you've got a friend in me" until i really got into the album. he's obviously a great songwriter, but the music itself sounds a little hokey, like a cowboy doll is going to crawl out from my bed at any moment. still - great album!! highlights - last night i had an amazing dream, simon smith and the amazing dancing bear, dayton ohio
Love me some Randy, don't love me under 2 min songs... Fun lyrics and delivery, unique instrumentals but a lot of them end when theyre starting up.
I love his voice. His music is like more-refined and softer Tom Waits. Movie magic in it all of course. AND the social commentary on American egotism is great.
Randy's voice just make me chuckle. Its hard to take serious but yet you stay till the end.
I liked this more than I expected. I'm not a fan of his voice, but this album showed a lot of melody and skill that I'd previously disregarded. This might warrant another listen.
Kind of a fun listen. Unfortunately for Randy when I hear his voice all I can think about is Pixar soundtracks haha it's hard to take this as seriously as it was intended. Still he has a great voice and a fun bouncy songwriting style. There's a lot to like here.
Interssante Stimme.
The music is fine and has a jazzy sound to it. Vocals are decent as well. A nice album that doesn't stand out too much. 3/5
I appreciate the satire of the album but the style gives me unshakable weird uncle energy
It's kinda nice but kinda boring. I can appreciate that the songwriting and melodies are vastly different than what I am used to listening to. I don't typically hear music that conveys these moods and feelings.
3.4.
Randy Newman is not Paul Newman who is not Newman from Seinfeld. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5
He never drags a song on too long, so that’s good. They’re all kind of like mini stories. It was ok.
Very recognizable voice. Can mostly just think of Family guy. I still think it's good but hard to get it out of my head Will I listen to again: 10%
I thought this was OK, but after having read a bit about the lyrics, I think I need to make another pass through this. Reasonably enjoyable at face value, but I think it's maybe more than that. ⭐⭐⭐ for now
Pleasant Randy session today, very laid back. It's a little too "sing-songy", I would never revisit the full album, but I'll get some mileage out of a couple songs here.
1. Sail Away - 5 Lyrically it's very strong at times. "We will cross the might ocean in the Charleston Bay" is a great line. The rest of the lines about America are a bit dull. Instrumentally the piano and strings are a fantastic sound. 2. Lonely At The Top - 5 It's a good concept for a song but it's lyrical execution is very poor. You don't really understand why it's "lonely at the top". Very simple song but just too simple at times. 3. He Gives Us All His Love - 3 Slow Jesus music. The strings are nice but it's just so over-simplistic and unnecessary. 4 - Last Night I Had A Dream - 6 Musically and instrumentally this song is fantastic. Such an amazing sound. Lyrically it's incredibly weak, especially in the chorus. Outro's guitar sounds excellent. 5. Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear - 7 Solid track. Very upbeat with decent lyrics and piano play that makes this a very light hearted, happy, and enjoyable track. 6. Old Man - 11 Beautiful song. It will move you to tears. 7. Political Science - 7 Solid song with a good meaning wrote very well to make it's point perfectly. As a satire, it's a solid track. 8. Burn On - 3 It's not a bad song I just don't understand the point of it. Instrumentally it's fine and lyrically it's okay. It's just very random. 9. Memo To My Son - 7 Solid track. Very upbeat and enjoyable. 10. Dayton, Ohio - 1903 - 5 Vocals sound good and the piano is solid. Very simple song however that passes by very very quickly. 11. You Can Leave Your Hat On - 2 Another completely random song in its lyrical composition. The instruments are extremely monotonous on the track and as such it just doesn't go anywhere. 12. God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind) - 3 The intention of the song is very good but the track itself is just all over the place. At times brilliant, at other times lost, and at other times a struggle to listen to much like the lyrics try to paint the world as. The album would be better off if this was dropped off the end of it. Average Rating: 5.33 Adjusted to a 5-Point Scale: 2.66 Rounded Up: 3 Stars
Not the worst not the best. A high 2 rounded up.
Great songs, great songwriting, trade mark delivery.
I respect it more than I enjoyed it. The songwriting’s sharp, and it’s packed with great session work, but the whole thing floats by a little too politely. Maybe I just wanted more bite. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Sail Away - Lonely at the Top - Political Science
Decent album, not resonating with me on a deeper level so far, may have to come back to it later. Maybe need to give the lyrics more attention. Have certainly connected more with other albums from this time period off the bat though. Likely will not be coming back more than once or twice. Overall all the songs are solid - nothing offensively bad or that I dont like, and is an enjoyable listen overall. Well arranged and produced (may be because I listened to the remaster) for its time, and I can see why it is on the list. Probably a solid 7/10 album, cant really find anything substantial to criticize but isn't quite captivating enough to warrant a higher score.
I quite liked the lyrics, and the music was well written, but overall "Sail Away" was an average album.
Perhaps one of the most nostalgic sounding voices on an album with some of the greatest range of messaging. You'll go from a religious God smiles song to a political statement of modern American imperialism while your heart dreams of the days of Toy Story.
Poor Randy Newman, because all I can hear is parodies of him singing. This will be my first full album from him I believe. Pleasant and well made. Does Randy Newman picks state per album? From what I know about him he sings about Ohio and California.
Points for being the Tin Pan Alley political satire department, but I can't say I enjoyed this album. Newman's whiny voice grates on me and while I think he is a decent lyricist, I would rather he let someone else sing. This album isn't for me, but its competent enough.
¡Hostia! El de Toy Story...
I don't dislike this album at all, but I can't help but feel like I'm listening to the soundtrack to an early 2000's Pixar movie about a mouse living in New York in the early 1900's.
Can’t help but think about Disney. Sounds like another Disney soundtrack. I like the soulful/blues elements.
It’s good, my brain just has a hard time not visualizing Toy Story when I hear him.
It was fine
Political Science could be satirising Trump’s actions this week. It’s funny, a cheery song about bombing the world. The title track is more chilling, soon to be slaves sailing towards America, towards “the land of the free”, written as a patriotic anthem. It’s clever, world weary satire. Risky lyrics delivered in a gentle way. Musically it’s somewhat interesting, lyrically it’s very interesting. I like that you could have this on at a party and pay no attention to the subject matter of the songs.
68/100. This album offers an easy listening experience. The highlights are memorable, but overall, it lacks the consistency to fully captivate.
Nice album good vocals
I like when we get two albums from the same artist in quick succession, gives you more perspective on their career and some more time to think about them. Randy Newman is interesting in how he can make such dark songs sound like show tunes (political science in particular). I found this album a little hit or miss but enjoyed it overall
2.8 Kinda like the other Randy Newman album we did, no? Maybe some more instrumentals. It was fine
Was better than I thought. Half of the songs are too cheesy though Fav tracks: Last Night I Had A Dream, You Can Leave Your Hat On, God's Song
If you said "have you ever heard of Randy Newman" I'd say "no", but as soon as this came on I knew this voice (distinctive, not anxiety inducing like Antony and the Johnsons (lol), and heard in apparently every Disney/Pixar movie on the planet). Respect to the songwriting; don't absolutely love this, though.
Hard to separate this guy’s serious music from him being the Disney/Pixar guy. This album does a good job of it though - some pretty serious songs on here alongside the usual more whimsical numbers. I enjoyed the R&B/bluesy feel of Last Night I Had a Dream, and I read that Ry Cooder (who I love) provides the slide guitar on this as well as on You Can Leave Your Hat On which was the only track I had prior knowledge of. Decent middle of the road stuff 3/5
This one didn't hit for me as hard as "Good Old Boys" but I like the way Randy Newman approaches song writing and, as always, he brings killer musicians to play on the album
2.5 rounded up because I like this guy's voice but aside from the Cleveland and bad dream songs it felt samey and a bit bleh
Favorite Track: Lonely At The Top
Was it great? No. Did I need to hear it? No, but it was alright.
I never been able to figure out if Randy Newman is a crazy, slightly racist, corny sentimentalist for an America that never existed or a satirical genius. I liked, “You Can Leave Your Hat On,” but the rest of the album did nothing to help me solve the riddle of Newman.
Sorry Randy you’ll always be the goofy Toy Story guy to me (2.5/5)
This was ok, nothing really stood out. Kept wanting to hear You've Got a Friend in Me, but it wasn't on this album. 3/5
Really impressive when Randy has a whole band behind him driving the song - very reminiscent of the best songs from 'The Band' - bluesy, groovy and broody. His solo piano songs are OK, though for me feels like the prototype Tom Waits model before Tom Waits appeared. Best Tracks: - Last Night I Had A Dream - Drayton, Ohio - You Can Leave Your Hat On Worst Tracks: - Sail Away Rating: 6.5/10
6/10 A little different, I liked it well enough 5-7-2025
no strong feelings about this one way or the other; in one ear and out the other
One of the most distinct voices. Quite simple piano songs. Many very short. Sweet and pleasant. The magic is in the lyrics, quite sarcastic for the sound.
I'm really unsure about this album. I want to hail it a masterpiece, but I'm not sure that it is. I want to downplay it as background music, but it's clearly far more than that. I think the lack of genre makes it a tough call to describe. I'll settle on superb songs, sung by a poor man's Bob Dylan.
Very sweet, particularly Old Man. Love the jazzy nature of Lonely at the Top and Last Night I Had a Dream - the latter reminded me of Hadestown. Love the piano riff on Memo To My Son. A Bob Dylan feel to both his voice and the music itself. God's Song is very Hadestown too.
It's not as good as the other album I had by him. This one feels way more earnest and twee, "root-de-doo, I'm Andy Newman" than his other one. That said there's a few nice tracks in here. 2.5 rounded up.
Sounds like Toy Story years before he did Toy Story.
I like the storytelling. He has a comforting voice. 3
Randy is the John Prine of piano jazz standards, with his penchant for irony and blunt storytelling. It’s hard to divorce the man from his Pixar scores though, and while there’s some great songs here a lot of it is really muddled in between. I get adding it here but Randy might just be a greatest hits guy for me.
A little too close to sounding like Live Laugh Love populism but it sounds good enough for the most part.
Randy should not just be associated with Toy Story

To be honest, it took me a while to get that these songs were satirical. Poe’s law and all that. In my defence, the idea that America is the land of the free and that slavery was actually doing the slaves a favour is the type of shit that a lot of Americans are actually stupid enough to believe. On Newman, I don’t think I’ve ever listened to his music other than the Toy Story theme, so wasnt’t sure what to expect. He’s clearly a good song writer, but I generally prefer the covers of his music to his own performances.
Well written and composed. love when music is very harmonically functional, but still adds a bit of spice. But it don't really stand out to me. it's nice to listen to in the background.
I want to like Randy. His lyrics are pretty clever and funny. However, it just doesn't do it for me. The music style and his voice just don't resonate with me.
I quite like Randy Newman, it's the second of his albums I've had now. I can't fully get into him; I've engaged with about half the songs per collection I've heard so far, but the ones I have engaged with I genuinely enjoy. I wasn't a fan of You Can Leave Your Hat on, compared to the Joe Cocker version.
It's very good, but not my taste. Favorite song: Dayton Ohio 1903
Nice vibe across the album with a few stand-out tracks
the very definition of middle of the road
Prolific song writer but most of his music is for movies. A good listen.
Oh, so this is where You Can Leave Your Hat On comes from, interesting. I liked the vibe. Listenable
I still find his voice irritating there are are a few nice songs on here he is a good lyricist I added a couple to my playlist.
Mostly piano and voice with some orchestral backup and thought provoking lyrics. Lonely at the Top My favourite is God's Song (Why I Love Mankind) which is deviously dark
I enjoy his voice, probably because it makes me think of toy story. Only lyrics that stood out was singing about America, and then multiple songs about Ohio.
This album was a biting satire that sent up American exceptionalism and even flirted with the absurd.
pleasant singer-songwriter
Sharp, witty and musically sophisticated album that blends social commentary with satirical storytelling.
Never took much notice of Randy Newman but knew he was a good songwriter and responsible for a few notable MOR songs. Not forgetting his notoriety as a result of Toy Story. More popular in the US rather than here in the UK me thinks. This album is a good example of his talents. Not an album I hate and I think any self respecting music fan should have at least one RN albums in their library to touch all base’s. This album would qualify for that job if I ever come across it cheap. 2.9/5 23/2/25
I can’t quite decide if I like this or not. I would probably have to give it another listen, but I don’t think it would be a top priority. I hear the wit in his lyrics, and the instrumentation is unique. But there were plenty of times where my mind wandered, and I just wasn’t that interested. Really a mixed bag.
If you ever thought, “I wish every song on Sgt. Pepper was like ‘When I’m 64,’” this album is for you. It arises from the counter culture but in an old timey facade. You wonder if he’s serious or sarcastic or cynical, and it’s probably all three. Just don’t expect a transition over to “Lovely Rita,” because it isn’t coming.
Nothing special, but refreshingly short. Somewhat ironic considering Mr Newman’s professed opinions on short things.
You've Got A Friend In Me mies. Vähän samantyylistä musiikkia, "orkesteripoppia". Ihan ok. Parhaat: Political Science, Dayton Ohio - 1903, Sail Away
Stick to Toy Story bub❗️
My husband dubbed this "Toy Story B Sides"
Ole Randy. This one wasn’t as fun as the other one on the list but it still fun. More chill.
Only giving it a 3 and not a 2 because he’s the genius behind Toy Story, Monsters Inc, and Cars
Still cannot escape the Toy Story connection - preferred it to the Good Old Boys - and would make this a solid 3.
Folky piano singer songwriter. Good music for a lazy day.
Too much murica
In which Randy Newman goes dark. Like real dark. If you're only knowledgeable with Randy's work through the Disney catalog you're in for a treat to hear what a drug-fueled, drive in a dystopian 70s era is like. Hearing it from the same voice that sings 'You've got a friend in me' puts you on edge. 3.5/5
When I listen to Randy Newman, I immideately think of 3 things: Toy Story, Major League, and Family Guy. Totally random which one I think of, but they change how I hear some of these lyrics lol
Sounds like Ray Charles with an extra chromosome
I’m still more in the appreciation stage for Newman than I am the enjoyment stage, but damn, do I appreciate a lot of this. 3.5/5
he saw a vampire AND a ghost... that's so scary man what the hell
I didn’t expect to like this but it grew on me
The soundtrack to Pixar's early release dream shop
His vocals are nice, but instrumentally there isn't much to write home about. Short but pleasant.
It was okay. Not a huge fan, though I appreciate his work.
The songs and songwriting are very good. But we’ve had his voice drilled into our collective conscious by Disney, which has probably done Randy’s catalog a disservice. I enjoyed this once I could separate my brain from Toy Story.
There are two kinds of people; people who need a second Randy Newman record to get the point, and the rest of us.
Fine, I guess. Just Randy Newman singing what he sees.
The man has written some great tunes in his time - I mean, for half the time o had the Toy Story song in my head. He’s very easy to listen to but I don’t want too much. However, I didn’t even know he wrote ‘ You can leave your hat on’ which I’ve always loved. But let’s face it Joe Cocker did it better. And always reminds me of 9 1/2 weeks. Now there was a film!!!!
I can take only so much of his voice at a time. I love ‘You Can Leave Your Hat On’. I’m glad he wrote it so Joe Cocker could cover it!
easy listening
While I liked the slightly sardonic lyrics, once I got over that this was the Toy Story guy, I found that the music didn't do much for me. For 70s American piano, I preferred Billy Joel.
Randy Newman isn't a conventionally good singer but there is a quality to his voice that lends it character and makes it interesting. I don't know much of his work but from what I've heard, I like his song writing. (Short People is probably an exception.) There's nothing that really stands out here but it was an enjoyable listen.
3.5
This if fine, witty here, sure, and biting there. And one's a firm supporter of curmudgeonliness and cynicism in many forms and okay with dudes who sing despite having indifferent or even poor voices. But this feels oversold, overdetermined and overdone. The best song "Dayton, Ohio," is a nice little set piece, but not quite the slice-of-life high art he appears to be reaching for. "Leave Your Hat On" isn't terrible either. For a guy so obviously playing for laughs, he does take himself awfully seriously, no? Would he even have made it on Tin Pan Alley? One's not so sure and really struggles to get into this at any more than a level of passing interest. The cover shot might be the best thing about the record. And whatever hipster cred or critical rep he had was lost with the Toy Story work (about which he seems way too proud).
Mellow and chill vibes
A whimsical album with a couple of classics but not enough to grab attention over the whole record.
Love the juxtaposition between the wholesome sound and the lyrics. Pretty sure I had heard "You Can Leave Your Hat On", but never really paid close attention to the lyrics. How in the world is the Joe Cocker version more famous?
Gonna be honest, I don't know much of Randy Newman's work from before his time at Disney/Pixar. The arrangements will definitely sound familiar to many and Newman's slow, Southern vocal style is hard to mistake. The whole album is pretty touching and reflective, if not a bit corny at times. Interesting to see Newman's songwriting ability on display, even way back when.
I love the new word cloud feature on this site. Very funny that my first thought on hearing this is that I just associate Randy Newman with Toy Story and sure enough, that along with Pixar/Disney etc. are some of the most mentioned topics. The market researcher in me finds this fun Anyway the album is quite nice, not too remarkable or notable so I probably wouldn't listen again, but a pleasant 3*
Liked this one more then the previous Randy Newman album. Political Science, You can leave your hat on, Maybe I'm doing it wrong were the favorite tracks.
Instrumentals were occasionally good, but other than that doesn't stand out
Randy Newman is bonkers to me. Unassuming and I think for the most part misunderstood. I don't necessarily like his music, but it's singular and unique and worth listening to with care.
I only knew Randy Newman as the guy who wrote songs for Pixar movies, so this was a bit of a surprise. While the music is fun, there's a dark undercurrent woven into in the lyrics that make this more interesting than you expect. That said I'm really not a fan of his singing.
we know what we're getting with Randy Newman. So no surprise on this album. It was enjoyable as a one off listen. Won't be listening again.
Stuff i neither like, neither dislike
I'm so confused about this album, First off have get around that I'm totally expecting a "You've got a Friend in Me" every other lyric, but then, the musicality is actually awesome but then I get super confused about what this dude is actually singing about? Its painfully american but then am I like is this just proud to be an american type of vibes or is this downright the level of ignorance and pride of america that became maga? I'm glad I got this album bc I totally would have never listened to it otherwise, and its good. But at the same time I think its probably negatively dated. 1972 man, I could totally see this have came out recently. Lonely at the Top is a bop Also side note I really love the photo of this album cover.
No short people? No reason to live
I appreciate authenticity and the clear ability to write a solid tune. Almost a softer Tom Waits, if that makes sense? However, people can’t deny that the Toy Story generation may have drawn their conclusions and this guy is a little comical, as a result.
Bland and inoffensive, and not very interesting
It's incredibly interesting to listen to Randy Newman in the 21st century, when his contribution to film, particularly Disney films, has far outweighed the cultural impacts of his earlier, solo career. Especially when you consider that the man who wrote a satirical song about "dropping the big one" would go on to write "You've Got a Friend in Me". His lyrics are often dark, and focused on a changing modern world, but I couldn't help but not feel particularly affected by it.
Btw ja faking ne mogu vjerovati da je You Can Leave Your Hat On njegova stvar - toliko o tome. Political Science stvar me jako nasmijala, totalni vrh!
Takodjer, nisam znao da je izvorno njegova You Can Leave Your Hat On. Bez obzira sto mi je malo prespor, uzivao sam vecinu vremena i zainteresiran sam cuti jos neke njegove albume.
I love Randy Newman’s voice and I respect his ability to write short, powerful songs. He has a distinct style too. His piano melodies are almost as distinct as his voice. The highlights for me were the opening title track about slavery and the haunting closer “God’s Song (That’s Why I Love Mankind).”
I grew up hearing Randy Newman being the voice of Toy Story / animation from my youth. 1995's "You Got a Friend in Me" was a true revelation for storyteller music and his voice is forever synonymous with that part of my life. There's something to his voice that is so immediately attractive and enjoyable. There's not many songwriters that naturally have voices like that that are so unique and have such a special sound. It's so approachable, friendly- jovial even. He sounds like a friendly uncle who you only see a few times a year for family events and when the family event starts to devolve into political discourse, he's there in the corner of the room hitting some chords on a piano and offering a respite from the conversation. "Be as happy as a monkey in the monkey tree." It's a beautiful sound and album, but it's only a 3 for me because I found that I got a little bored in the second half.
What I´ve learned: The well known "You Can Leave Your Hat On" by Joe Cocker is only a cover version😉 Never heared of Randy Newman before but this album is definitely worth a listen! 3,5
The musical Larry David, with the handful of moderately amusing insights served with way too large a side of smugness and self-satisfaction, from an artist who clearly thinks he's the smartest guy in the room and thinks he should be a much bigger star. These are samey, both in the smart alecky and sonic senses. The songs don't add up to much, but to sour jokes / tired-seeing plaints only he's amused by, none of which merit the brass and strings. And for such a supposedly accomplished lyricist, there's a lot here that's prosaic and flat, with mostly predictable rhymes; for instance, what does the song "Dayton, Ohio, 1903" actually tell us about either Dayton, Ohio or 1903? Mightn't it have been just as accurately entitled "Afternoon Tea with the Missus and Me"? (One understands this might be a reference to the Wright Bros or a local serial killers, but, again RN seems the only one in on the joke, which is perhaps how he likes it. [So better to spend time with the related GBV song.] Writers get no credit for writing in character if the characters are inscrutable.) Best things about the record are the "You Can Leave Your Hat On" (which has best line on whole record "Take off your dress / yes, yes, yes, yes") and the cover image. One is not surprised that his offerings sunk like a lead commercially, but finds it odd that his critical reputation seems to have been sustained. One thinks he is properly rated – the market got him right, for the most part. Even one album by this guy in this book/list seems one too many.
This freaky ass boi told her to leave her hat on 😭😭😭
Randy has a real knack for writing pithy little songs. Some are hits, some are misses. All of them sort of wistful.
Folky. Very Americana.
Sail Away // Last Night I Had a Dream // You Can Leave Your Hat On //
Liked it more than I thought I would. Very inoffensive!
Didn’t do a lot for me.
Randy Newman fucking hates god
It was delightful and at times irritating. He is definitely a master song writer with an distinct sound and delivery. When it works its awesome movie music. Not all of the 17 songs work...specially the spritual/god crap,
It still baffles me that this is "Toy Story" song guy...
Unique voice. Sort of soothing. Didn’t hate it.
Just ok, glad he found his niche with animated movies
Fans of the series “Monk” will have a flashback, because every song reminds you of it. But after a while it becomes quite monotonous, just like the singer's voice.
Good story telling is missing in modern music. This album reminds me of the more profound music scene that existed.
Solid album. Once you reset from the initial Toy Story/film score/etc. familiarity, this is a nice album. Newman is a good songwriter. Sometimes a simple piano and some good lyrics are all you need. ***
alawys been a randy fan but i think in 2024 I disagree with his methods of getting his politics across (taking on personas)
Easy listening.......3*
Nice one
Gran compositor, fuera de modas.
Well now Randy Newman, an artiste I've always thought I should like. His voice is unique in style and timbre. And indeed the theme to Monk, was superb. And there were some good bits here, but not enough. Preferred it to yesterday's offering, but only just. Still I feel I need to make that evident with my score, so it's a 3 from me.
One part charming, one part jazzy, two parts disturbing; that's the Randy Newman cocktail. I've always admired Newman's ability to craft cheeky tunes that ease their way into mainstream consciousness, even if I've never been a big fan. Side note, I think it speaks to our lack of cultural risks these days compared to 30 years ago, when a major children's animation corporation could hire someone like Randy Newman to compose the music for the first Pixar film. Somehow, all those pieces fell into place, solidifying not only Newman's legacy, but also some of the most memorable music ever composed that virtually every human on Earth knows. What would be the equivalent of that today? Giving songwriting duties on Bluey to Yung Gravy?
"The Buddhists and the Hindu joined on satellite TV... "I cried when this lyric came up... Sad life we living in.. people in long long queues.... Stepping to their demise one by one... Monochromatic aberration... Always remove that shit in lightroom rainbows in every edge..
Probably Randy Newman's best album, sail away, is an excellent record.
Great
I don't particularly love Randy Newman's style, but I can appreciate his songwriting! I didn't recognize his name either, but his voice is unmistakable; the moment he started singing I said to myself "Oh! The Toy Story 'You've Got A Friend in Me' guy!" And from there, I even recognized a few of the songs on this album. This guy certainly has a knack for songwriting that goes along with that distinct voice. While I wasn't blown away, I will say that this made for an easy listening experience!
Simultaneously soothing and unsettling.
Piano ditties And poetic ramblings Laid back listening
Well, I can't say that I expected to ever listen to a full album from Randy Newman of all people, but I'm kind of happy I did. Randy Newman is an artist that I've heard plenty of songs from before, but there's one thing in common with the context I heard them in. I heard them all in animated movies. But you know, I've always liked what I've heard. I always did like the music in the Toy Story movies. But now, I get to talk about his music outside of that! And I've gotta say, it's pretty solid. The sound is familiar territory, mainly in regards to the singing, which I should've expected given that it's still Randy Newman. It's pretty good though. His music is kind of like Bob Dylan's in a way where the songwriting is the main focus as opposed to the singing and instrumentation, because while both of the latter things are good, it's the songwriting that makes this a listen that's worth your time. There's an element of satire that I didn't expect to be there, but I gladly welcome it. It makes this music stand out from the movie stuff. There's a solid variety in what's written about, including religion ("He Gives Us All His Love" and "God's Song"), America ("Political Science" and the title track), and whatever "Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear" is supposed to be about. The many short song approach aids in this variety. Overall, it's not amazing or anything, but Sail Away is a pretty good album that makes me appreciate Randy Newman's musical talents a lot more. High 3/5.
Soaked in the 70s that album - I prefer Tom Waits for this sort of thing
It’s ok
It is a tad boring, but the vibe is there
Mahtava ääni ukolla. Soitanta vaihtelevan mielekästä.
Edellisen levyn kommentit: ”Paikoin muniinpuhaltelua, paikoin ok. En kuuntele toista kertaa” meni väärälle levylle… piti tulla tähän. D. Crosbyn levy taasen oli parempi. Välillä jopa mukaansatempaavaa rehellistä rokkia. Ja tähdet tosiaan meni väärinpäin. Crosby 3, Newman 2
The most American thing I'll hear today. It really bugs me how many of these songs just sort of end without ending. It's super disruptive. Okay over all though.
Nice
3.5 stars. Singer-songwriter that is more orchestral than pure folk. Incredibly talented lyricist. The slow and 'quiet' nature of the music led to it not being quite as engaging but more an album I just appreciate.
rollo toy story
Nothing on Short People.
This album should be called 'so you want to make a 80s film montage'? Tracks such as: Old home town Goofy love Melancholy Big love, Nuclear holocaust!
Not as consistent as Good Old Boys, his follow-up to this, but Newman still sounds great across this album. The first couple of songs in particular are fantastic, and his voice and mannerisms are always fun but the songwriting does drop off a bit and it becomes less interesting later on
Bros yapping
I think i won't hate this so much. It's alright. not my favorite of his. 3 stars maybe.
I like the one where he sings sweetly about nuking the world.
Another artist with good lyrics, his own sound, and great skill. But not that appealing to me overall.
No. 189/1001 Sail Away 3/5 Lonely at the Top 2/5 He Gives Us All His Love 3/5 Last Night I Had A Dream 3/5 Simon Smith 2/5 Old Man 3/5 Political Science 3/5 Burn On 2/5 Memo to My Son 3/5 Dayton, Ohio 3/5 You Can Leave Your Hat On 3/5 God's Song 2/5 Average: 2,67 Nothing really remarkable. Didn't like his voice that much.
Chill album to listen to Standout songs: Lonely at the Top Last night I had a dream Political Science
it's okay.
Another interesting little listen from Randy. I mostly enjoyed the lush production on some tracks and the satirical songwriting (Burn On, God's Song, Political Science). A few songs really don't amount to much outside their title which leaves something to be desired. 6/10
